QUESTIONABLE CRITERIA (Re: Monsey’s Sales Superstar, Issue 170) As a Monsey resident for close to 45 years, I was dismayed that in Monsey Ihr HaTorah the main consideration for selecting winners for your Sales Superstar contest wasn’t chashivus haTorah or ehrlichkeit or extra care and caution that their merchandise stands up to the highest level of tznius. Mr. Nagel at Monsey Housewares is an example of how erlichkeit comes before making money. I can’t even count how many times he has told me, “Don’t waste your money on this” when he could have made a sale. A Monsey Resident

fect spot for steering the wagon?), Roizy Baum’s article came to mind. It was validating to know that even though customers were eyeing my horadancing, spirited children with amusement, I am not the only one in this whole, wide universe whose kids make grocery shopping this exciting! G.D.

THE SALMON SOLUTION (Re: Supper in the Fast Lane, Issue 169) As a working mother, I identified with the writer struggling with last-minute suppers. I enjoyed the tips and wanted to share one of my own: Salmon can be coated or dressed with just about anything from the refrigerator or pantry and bakes in as short as 20 minutes. Best of all, local fish stores are very gracious about delivering them, and a large order is not needed for the service. It’s my go-to supper whenever I am tight in time or behind in planning. M.H.

PERFECT POTATOES (Re: Dinner on the Grill, Issue 169) The potatoes on the grill by Leah Stern were a hit! My family members are all lovers of the spud, but it often falls off the menu when I’m pressed for time since other starches cook so much faster. These grilled red potatoes, which required no peeling and were ready in just minutes, were not only time-friendly, but also oh-so-delicious. My grill was going non-stop as we made one batch after the next. Thank you! A Happy Cook

A WEEKLY GUIDE (Re: Fit for a King, Issue 163) I’d like to thank Goldie Rosner for the stepby-step guide on making round challos. Though Rosh Hashanah has long gone, I make the twostrand challah each week as bilkelech to send to my brother in yeshivah. It’s simple, easy and the result is beautiful. G.R. Parshas Chayei Sarah By: Malka Schneps

LOOKING AT ROCHEL*, you would never guess that she is in her 80s. I’ve known Rochel my entire life, and as long as I’ve known her, she has always been a person to wake up bright and early and get right to work. I have never seen Rochel sitting and relaxing on a weekday. She claims she has no patience to sit around. Rochel still works part time, maintains an immaculate home, and hosts children and grandchildren at her Shabbos table every week — with all food cooked by herself. One might think that Rochel is able to do all this because she has been gifted with perfect health. While it is true that Rochel has been gifted with good health, it is also true that Rochel works relentlessly to maintain her health. Rochel has struggled for years with high blood pressure, so she does not allow a drop of added salt to enter her diet, and due to digestive issues, she has long since given up many foods that she loves. Why does Rochel work so hard to maintain her health? So that she can be healthy enough to work hard and help people. Rochel cannot be content to do something only for herself. She once expressed to me a desire to learn to paint, and she even found out that there were classes nearby that taught people to paint in the style she admires. A few weeks went by, and when I spoke to Rochel again, I asked her if she started the painting classes yet. Rochel replied that she could not see herself taking art classes — if she had extra time, she noted, she should do something to help others instead. And so, Rochel began volunteering in the Alzheimer's unit of a nursing home. At that point, Rochel was still in her 70s. Another time, when I was visiting Rochel, I noticed that her back was wrapped and there was an ice pack inside the wrap. It turned out she had injured herself. I immediately tried to convince her to allow me to help her, but she replied, “Please do not help me. As long as I am able to do something myself, I want to do it myself.” If I would have to sum up Rochel in a few words, I would describe a person full of joyful love and service to

54 / THE MONSEY VIEW

others. It says in this week’s parsha, “Vayihu chayei Sarah me’ah shanah v’esrim shanah v’sheva shanim sh’nei chayei Sarah — And the life of Sarah was one hundred years and twenty years and seven years, the years of the life of Sarah” (Bereishis 23:1). Rashi cites the Midrash that all the days of Sarah’s life were equal in their goodness. The Sfas Emes explains that ordinary people tend to get better over the years, putting aside misdeeds of their youth. For those people, the real days of their life are only at the end of their lives, when they attain some level of wholeness. In contrast, all of Sarah Imeinu’s days were good. While Sarah surely attained higher levels as she grew older, she did not need to do so by pushing aside misdeeds of her past, as she had none. Rather, Sarah grew naturally, according to her essence. The Sfas Emes explains that every day of our lives we are given the opportunity to perform some rectification. By seizing that opportunity for rectification each day, a purely righteous person can ascend even higher, using each day as another rung on the ladder to climb to reach ever greater heights. That was Sarah Imeinu. Every day of her life was whole. We all dream of becoming tzaddikim and tzidkaniyos. What is the difference between a dream and a goal? A dream is something we envision and wish for, but a goal is something we work toward. While it is wonderful to have dreams, we must turn them into goals. We can have long-term goals, mid-range goals and short-term goals. A long-term goal might be to say the entire Sefer Tehillim every day. A midrange goal toward that long-term goal might be to complete the Sefer Tehillim every week. A shortterm goal towards the mid-range goal could be to complete the Sefer Tehillim each month. By breaking tasks down in this way, we can turn dreams into goals, and goals into reality. Then, hopefully, we can emulate Sarah Imeinu by not only counting our days but making our days count.

Palisades Ups Speed Limit to 55 MPH If you are a frequent driver on the Palisades Interstate Parkway, you may have noticed something different over the last few weeks: signs the full length of the roadway announcing a 55 mph speed limit. Previously, the speed limit south of the New York State Thruway had been 50 mph. Originally constructed as a scenic byway in the 1950s, the Palisades is listed on the National Register of Historic places. While commercial traffic and trucks are still banned from its four lanes, the highway has become a major artery for those who commute to New York City from Rockland and Orange counties. The Palisades Interstate Parks Commission put the higher speed limit into effect as of October 1. Exceeding the new speed limit could be costly, reported The Journal News, with $78 fines for anyone traveling just 1 to 4 miles over the posted speed, with fines escalating further in 5 mph increments for those who choose to drive even faster. The speed change has created little fanfare, with Orangetown Supervisor Chris Day noting that the 50

mph speed limit has been “artificially low” until now. The new law work in favor of motorists, noted Day. “It’s less likely for someone to get a ticket for what is safe driving because of an artificially low speed limit,” said Day.

Measles Outbreak Continues, with Health Officials Advising Residents to Get Immunized A measles outbreak that has been linked to unvaccinated children in Yerushalayim shows no signs of abating just yet, with cases continuing to pop up in Monsey, Brooklyn and, now, Lakewood. A total of 33 confirmed cases of the measles have been confirmed in both children and adults in the Monsey area, according to the Rockland County Department of Health, with five additional cases still awaiting confirmation as of time of print. The DOH has continued to run vaccine clinics in the area, providing free immunizations in the hopes of stopping the spread of the disease. In a press conference held last week, health commissioner Dr. Patricia Schnabel Ruppert said that many have gone to their own doctors or to urgent care centers to be vaccinated. Schools that have had confirmed cases of the measles in their student body have been ordered to keep all unvaccinated children home for three weeks after the last confirmed case was reported; those who fail to comply with the directive could face fines and/or penalties. The rising number of measles cases is not unex-

pected, said Dr. Ruppert, with the new cases coming from secondary exposure to the virus. According to The Rockland Journal News, more than 2,000 people have gotten the MMR vaccine since the outbreak hit the area during Sukkos, and Dr. Ruppert said that she hopes to see the numbers beginning to taper down shortly. Additional cases have been reported outside Monsey, with six confirmed by the New York City Department of Health in Williamsburg, and one reportedly confirmed in Boro Park. The New Jersey Department of Health reported one confirmed case of measles in Lakewood in an individual who had traveled to Eretz Yisroel and who may have exposed people at the Satmar Shul on Forest Avenue, Eat A Pita and the Chemed Health Center from October 13 to October 21. Doctors are recommending that anyone who is not immune to the measles and is planning to travel to Eretz Yisroel get the MMR vaccine at least two weeks before departure. For more information on the measles, contact the Department of Health at 888-3644837.

No-Fuss Vegetable Pea Soup I’ve been under the misconception that soup must be cooked with sauteed vegetables, until I tried this one. You’ll enjoy its large quantity; it freezes really well.

INGREDIENTS 2 package yellow split peas 16 cups water ½ cup oil 3 large Spanish onions 2 lbs. carrots 2 squash 3 medium parsnips 1 large knob celery 3 cloves crushed garlic 4 T. salt

DIRECTIONS 1. Place first three ingredients in a 16-quart pot. Bring to a boil. Lower flame and cook 2½ to 3 hours. 2. Using a fine shredder, shred all vegetables and add to peas. Add salt, bring to a boil, and cook 1 additional hour, adding water if necessary.

Cream of Chicken Soup This is a method rather than a recipe, but you’ll enjoy it as it has double benefits: It’s simple to prepare and avoids wasting the white “soup greens.” I usually serve this soup either on Thursday or Sunday night; it stretches my Shabbos soup substantially. If you’re left with vegetables but not enough clear soup, saute extra onions only until lightly browned, make a roux (by adding flour to the onions and sauteing another two minutes), and replenish soup stock with water, salt and white pepper. This soup will have less chicken flavor, but will still be delicious.

DIRECTIONS 1. When preparing chicken soup, place all white vegetables in a mesh bag. The following vegetables work well: onion, garlic, parsley root, parsnip, knob celery, turnip, peeled squash and small pieces of celery rib. 2. Cook soup, remove bag, and empty into pot. Add approximately equal amounts of soup to vegetables and blend with immersion blender. This is a thick version; add more chicken soup if a more runny consistency is desired. 3. Serve with sauteed onions.

Sauteed Onion Garnish Yields six portions

INGREDIENTS 1 large onion

Oil

½ T. flour

DIRECTIONS 1. Slice onion and saute in generous amount of oil on high heat, mixing constantly. 2. After 10 minutes, sprinkle flour onto onions. Stir well and cook until browned.

The Great Bar Mitzvah Paradox Rabbi and Mrs. Cohen, teachers in the Hebrew Day School of Hawaii, would like to celebrate the bar mitzvah of their twins, Moshe and Aharon, in Yerushalayim. Rabbi Cohen’s elderly parents live in New York, while Mrs. Cohen’s parents live in Hong Kong. As they plan to celebrate the bar mitzvah in Eretz Yisroel, the Cohens decide that Rabbi Cohen will take Moshe to visit his parents in New York on the way to Eretz Yisroel, and Mrs. Cohen will take Aharon to Eretz Yisroel via Hong Kong to enable her parents to partake in the simcha. The bar mitzvah is scheduled for Thursday, 7 Adar. On Monday, 4 Adar, they board their respective flights, the father and Moshe to New York and then to Eretz Yisroel, and the mother and Aharon to Hong Kong and then on to Eretz Yisroel. Each leg of each flight is about 12 hours. The eastbound flight to New York departs Hawaii at 1 p.m. local time on Monday, flies into the sunset and through the night, and arrives in New York 12 hours

THE MONSEY VIEW / 77

later, at 6 a.m. on Tuesday morning. (1 a.m. Hawaii time plus 5 hours, as New York is 5 hours ahead of Hawaii). They visit their relatives and leave New York that evening. After a 12-hour stopover, they depart New York at 6 p.m., see Tuesday’s sunset, fly through the night, and arrive in Eretz Yisroel on Wednesday at 1 p.m. (6 a.m. New York time plus 7, as Eretz Yisroel time is 7 hours ahead of New York). The bar mitzvah is scheduled for the next morning. In the meantime, Mrs. Cohen, traveling with Aharon, leaves Hawaii at the same time as her husband, 1 p.m., in a westbound direction, and lands in Hong Kong 12 hours later, where the local time is 7 p.m. (Hawaii time 1 a.m., minus 6, as Hong Kong time is 6 hours behind Hawaii). The entire flight took place during daylight. Mrs. Cohen visits her parents, and after a 12hour stopover in Hong Kong, she and Aharon depart to Eretz Yisroel at 7 a.m. Being that this flight is also in a westbound direction, they are flying “with the sun,” so that when they arrive 12 hours later in Eretz Yisroel, the local time is 1 p.m. (Hong Kong time 7 p.m., minus 6, as Eretz Yisroel time is 6 hours behind Hong Kong time.) Rabbi Cohen and Moshe arrive at the same

time, and together they take a cab to Yerushalayim. That night, as they compare notes of their journeys, something fascinating surfaces. As Rabbi Cohen flew eastward, “against the sun,” time kept advancing. He and Moshe saw two sunsets along the way. Mrs Cohen and Aharon, on the other hand, flew westward. As they flew with the sun, time kept moving back, resulting in their experiencing only one sunset since leaving Hawaii. Moshe lived through one more sunset than his twin Aharon did. Is he, in fact, a day older? Aharon saw a Monday night sunset shortly after he landed in Hong Kong, but he never did get to see a Tuesday night sunset. Is today in fact his Tuesday, 5 Adar? And if it is Wednesday, how did he get there without having seen a Tuesday sunset? If we carry the argument to its logical conclusion, that Moshe is in fact older than Aharon by a day because he experienced an extra sunset, then as they both stood at the airport in Eretz Yisroel after they landed, for Moshe it was Wednesday and his bar mitzvah would be the next day, Thursday, while for Aharon it was only

Tuesday, and his bar mitzvah would not take place for another two days — on his Thursday, which is Moshe’s Friday. Is that possible? When Friday night comes for Moshe, will it be Thursday night for Aharon? When Moshe is making Kiddush, can it be a weekday for Aharon? That is clearly impossible. How, then, do we reconcile Aharon’s calendar? The short answer to the Cohens’ question lies in the fact that someone crossed the dateline somewhere along the way. As the Cohens traveled, two of them east and two of them west, together they circumnavigated the world, and one pair of them crossed the dateline. I hesitate to say which one crossed the dateline as this is, in fact, a major disagreement among poskim. The Chazon Ish would claim that Mrs. Cohen and Aharon crossed the dateline as they approached Asia, catapulting them a day forward, while other poskim would say that Rabbi Cohen and Moshe crossed the dateline shortly after they took off from Hawaii, moving them backward in time. Just how this works and why the poskim disagree is beyond the scope of this short article. The fact of the matter is that one of them crossed the dateline, resulting in their simultaneous arrival in Eretz Yisroel on the same day regardless of how many sunsets each experienced.

Welcome to the World of the Dateline in Halacha The dateline question in halacha was not seriously dealt with until the Yidden fleeing the Nazis during World War II found themselves in the Far East. They were unsure where the dateline was and on which side of it they stood. The shailah was sent to Eretz Yisroel by telegram, and two major conflicting opinions emerged — opinions that severely impacted their daily lives by concluding which day to keep Shabbos and on which day to fast on Yom Kippur. In broad strokes, the dateline question can be broken down into two major issues. One: Is there a halachic dateline? And if so, where is it? Two: Halachically, what happens when you cross the dateline? The effect of the first question regarding where the dateline is has major ramifications in regard to the determination as to what day of the week it is at

October 31, 2018 / THE MONSEY VIEW / 79 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484

each point on the planet. Just to cite one example, according to the Chazon Ish, Shabbos in Japan is to be observed on the day that the Japanese call Sunday. According to other poskim, Shabbos in Hawaii is to be observed on their Friday. Needless to say, one planning a trip to Japan or to Hawaii must take these shailos into consideration. But the more common questions revolve around the second issue: What impact does crossing the dateline have on halacha? A few cases in point: One is on a flight from New York to Hong Kong. On Monday afternoon, at 3 p.m local time, he davens Mincha. Shortly thereafter, he crosses the dateline. The day is pushed forward, and local time is now Tuesday 4 p.m. Must he daven Mincha again? Furthermore, since it is now Tuesday, and he never wore tefillin on Tuesday, must he don them for Mincha? Or consider a baby born in New York on Monday, 2 Kislev, who travels westward to have his bris in Hong Kong the following Monday, 9 Kislev. When this baby crosses the dateline and the day is pushed forward, by the time it is Monday, 9 Kislev, in Hong Kong, for this baby it is still the seventh day! What difference does it make if he crossed some invisible geographic line in the Pacific Ocean? Bottom line is that this baby is only seven days old. May we perform the bris on Monday? On eastbound flights, the day is pushed backward as the dateline is crossed; in other words, the calendar shows the date on the east side of the dateline to be a day earlier, hence the day repeats itself. All the above questions then arise in the reverse. If one davened Mincha on Monday, and he then crosses the dateline in an eastbound direction, thereby pushing the day/date

80 / THE MONSEY VIEW

back to Sunday, when it is time for Mincha the next day, on Monday, in New York, must he daven again? After all, he davened Monday’s Mincha already! On the other hand, as far as this individual is concerned, this “second” Monday is a new day for him. The questions are endless. Interestingly, contemporary poskim have very different opinions on each case. Their understanding of which mitzvos are determined by the calendar day/date and which mitzvos are determined by one’s personal day based on sunrise and sunset experiences are quite diverse. We will not even begin to explore actual opinions on the matter as the literature on this relatively newly explored area of halacha can fill a bookcase.

Transpolar Flights: Added Confusion Let’s conclude this short exploration of this fascinating topic with a more recent development in air travel, one that is not more than 20 years old, which adds a new layer of complexity to an already difficult study. Up until 20 years ago, when one traveled from New York to Hong Kong, one would fly the Pacific route with a stop in Alaska, or the slightly longer Atlantic route with a stop in Europe. With the ability of newer planes to fly longer distances, the non-stop flight has become the norm. Looking at a flat map, it seems that the short-

est route to the Far East is by flying westward over the Pacific. But if you look at a globe, you will see that the shortest route to Hong Kong is, in fact, directly north over the North Pole. Some of the halachic complications that arise from this new set of circumstances are quite interesting. The North Pole sees no night during the summer months. Thus you can be flying in that region at midnight local time, but when you look out the window, the sun is high in the sky. How does one daven Maariv? Another question: The flight paths often take one close to the North Pole, sometimes a few hundred miles east of it, and sometimes just west of it. If the plane flies west of the pole, the dateline is crossed. If it flies on the east side of the pole, the dateline is not crossed. Without going into detail, this may have some interesting halachic ramifications. THE ABOVE was meant only to give you a taste of what has been probably one of the most intriguing areas of halacha that arose during this past century. When delving into these questions and studying the absolute genius manner in which poskim address new shailos that no one ever dreamed of, one gains a better appreciation of how everything can be found in the Torah.

Zolly Tropper is an expert on the halachic aspects of the dateline and brings awareness to the halachic ramifications of travel many may be unaware of. More information on the topic can be found on his website, datelineinhalacha.com, and in his book Dateline in Halacha (Kitzur Ta’arich Yisroel).

Wait! The crack of dawn. Bright horizon, soon the sunshine. Yes, Moshiach’s on his way! All the grief and sorrow slip away. The past is but a dream, in Yerushalayim, the Beis Hamikdash. Yes, this galus will slip away, like the night so swiftly turns to day… CRACK OF DAWN, SUNG BY MBD, COMPOSED BY YOSSI GREEN

5:34 a.m., and my toddler is hard to wake, though the big kids jump right up. And the baby? She’s the one we thank for waking us. (The alarm set for 30 minutes ago has been snoozed numerous times by someone I’ll not blame in print…) Hands are quickly washed, pajamas exchanged for clothing, foodstuff thrown into a bag. Breathless, we lope through the halls of our hotel, sprint to the car, and begin our journey to catch the sun. The sky is already streaked with color, and as we travel, I fear we’ll miss it: the epic moment the sun breaks over the horizon. It’s 6:07 now, and we’ve arrived. Netz is at 6:21; we still have time! Tumbling out of the car, we dash the last few feet through the parking lot and there she is: the ocean in all her glory. There’s a cloud cover this morning, but the streaks are brighter now, with reds and oranges swiped across the early morning blue. The waves crest and fall, slapping the shoreline. Aside from its grumble, the world is silent. Even the baby sniffs at the salty air and quietly strains for a better look at the Atlantic. Isn’t there a bracha we’re supposed to make? I wonder, dismayed that we forgot to prepare for the ruchniyus aspect of this event. New sand toys are opened and the children gather at my feet, digging (to China?), building a palace made of sand. Isn’t that what this all is? I think to myself. Lives of sand. Monuments and empires that will wash away with the waves of time. But no, I tell myself, Not with us Yidden. What we build here will never wash away. “Look!” My husband cries. Like hope itself, the sun breaks over the horizon, a ball of fiery red. At this moment, it’s almost easy to believe that the world is flat, that the horizon is the very last place where Earth and her waters extend. A crisp line is drawn between the here of our planet and that which lies beyond. There is a flash of Something Great; a spark of spirituality enfolded in the laws of nature, one that

anyone can grasp — but how many don’t? We watch as Her Majesty, the sun, does her Creator’s bidding and begins the overhead climb. From a blood-red beginning she segues into a dance of yellow-orange, smoothly sliding further above us. A shriek of delight breaks the silence, and I watch as my husband runs with the children from the waters that recede and return, the tide splashing their feet with wonderfully cold sea water. Only a short while ago we were rubbing sleep from our eyes in a world of blackness. A night, long and exhausting. But now, in a matter of minutes, the world is awash in a light so blindingly strong we cannot look straight at it. As I squint at the morning sun, her heat washes over me. With the arrival of the sun, the world is transformed in an instant, reminding us of the promise that is tomorrow. The promise of hope, forever on the horizon, the dawn bringing forth its gift anew each day. As the first scantily clad runners arrive on the beach, I’m keenly aware that today’s sunrise has not heralded Moshiach. But hope is not lost. There are still many hours in which he may come, and with him, the dawn of a new reality — one so bright the naked eye will not bear its brilliance. For now though, it is time for us to leave, taking with us the promise of tomorrow. L’shanah haba b’Yerushalayim.

Our trip to watch the sun break over the horizon was inspired by two chedarim that arranged for their preteen boys to leave Monsey at 3 a.m. and watch the sun rise at a beach near Deal, NJ. Having been on one of those amazing adventures, my husband decided that we, as a family, must also go. And I’m sure glad we did, though instead of packing the kids into the car at 3 a.m., we booked a room nearby for the night before and only woke minutes to sunrise. We found the hotel right on the beach to be too expensive for our taste, so we stayed a little farther away, at the Eatontown Sheraton Hotel. 1 hour and 30 minutes from Monsey

EATONTOWN SHERATON HOTEL

OCEAN PLACE RESORT

The Eatontown Sheraton was under renovation when we went, creating an interesting combination of new and old in one hotel. The rooms were strikingly modern, with crisp, fresh decor, while the wing downstairs housing the breakfast room where we ate our brought-from-home food was outdated and dark, causing me to feel as if we’d stepped back in time and into the Homowack of years gone by.

If cost isn’t a factor and you’d like to be beachside first thing in the morning, the Ocean Place Resort is right near the water. Of course, you’ll have to take into account that the warmer the weather and the later the hour, the more concern of pritzus you’ll have to contend with. 800-411-6493

THE BEACH Access to the beach is directly adjacent to an adorable residential area with sweet little houses so typical of the American dream (sans picket fence). When going there before the sun is up and the crowds have arrived, realize that people may be sleeping. Keep your crew under control, which may actually be rather easy since they’ll still be rubbing sleep from their eyes. We typed the address for the Ocean Place Resort into our GPS and when we arrived, we traveled one street further and turned down Madison Ave, which goes through directly to the beach. Note: Ocean Avenue in Long Branch has access points to the boardwalk at the following corners: Seaview Avenue, Ocean Terrace, Cooper Avenue, Madison Avenue, at the traffic circle at the end of Laird Street, Melrose Terrace, North Bath Avenue, South Bath Avenue, Cottage Place, Wooley Court (off Matilda Terrace), Avery Avenue, Howland Avenue, Kiernan Road, Vine Court, Brown Road and West End Avenue. From Eatontown Sheraton: 12–15 minutes

DAVENING

SUNRISE TIMES

After the sun rose, my husband hopped over to The Sephardic Torah Center to daven Shacharis, where he was warmly welcomed by the local community.

Once the clock will fall back on November 4, sunrise in Long Branch will be at 6:54, gradually moving forward by approximately a minute each day. For the full experience, aim to be there at least a half hour before sunrise.

SEVENTYEIGHT-YEAROLD BENJAMIN FRANKLIN was sleeping soundly in his home in the Parisian suburb of Passy* when a sudden noise woke him. After having been up until well past midnight, he’d bedded down somewhere between 3:00 and 4:00 a.m. Startled, he looked around the sunlit room and noted that it was only 6:00 a.m. The room was alight, the sun’s rays infiltrating the shutters that he’d neglected to close. Knowing that all of Paris would be slumbering sweetly while the sun made its brilliant way from the mountain peaks across the sky, Franklin mulled over the wasted natural light. Parisians, who were wont to start their day at noon, were sleeping through the first six hours of sunlight on a daily basis!

Making Light of the Topic Franklin’s passions for thrift and for writing revved up, and he knew that this was the next topic he would address in the anonymous series of satire letters he was penning to his good friend Francois Cadet de Vaux, editor of the Journal of Paris. Six hours of sunny sleep meant six extra waking hours when candlelight was needed — an expense, Franklin wryly thought, that if averted, would save Parisians a great deal of money. *During the War of Independence, Franklin was sent as an ambassador to Paris for public relations purposes.

And so he set about writing a parody, which appeared in the above paper on April 6, 1784, exploring the epiphany that had dawned on him with the rising sun. A Subscriber, the anonymous cloak Franklin donned, wrote, “I looked at my watch, which goes very well, and found that it was but six o’clock; and still thinking it something extraordinary that the sun should rise so early, I looked into the almanac, where I found it to be the hour given for his rising on that day. I looked forward too, and found he was to rise still earlier every day towards the end of June; and that no time during the year he retarded his rising so long as till eight o’clock. Your readers, who with me have never seen any sign of sunshine before noon… will be as much astonished as I was, when they hear of his rising so early; and especially when I assure them, that he gives light as soon as he rises. I am convinced of this.” His letter continued to extensively explore the topic, tongue-in-cheek, and included a calculation of the amount of money that would be saved from March 20 to September 20, would Parisians bank on the natural light as opposed to burning candles for

the sun, bells should ring or cannons should be shot — whatever would be necessary to rouse the sluggards to the dawning of a new day. This discovery, while conceived in humor, would yet see the light of day — but it would take close to a century and a half for that to happen.

A Bright Idea Sealed shutters barring entry to the sun’s rays apparently bothered freethinkers at large. It was that very sight, which London builder William Willet witnessed while taking a ride one morning, that convinced him to advocate for the cause. He launched his campaign in 1907 with the publishing of a pamphlet titled “Waste of Daylight.” “Everyone appreciates the long, light evenings. Everyone laments their shortage as Autumn approaches; and everyone has given utterance to regret that the clear, bright light of an early morning during Spring and Summer months is so seldom seen or used,” Willet wrote. He went on to propose what he thought a simple solution: to maximize the use of summer sunlight by advancing the clock 20 minutes on each of the four Sundays in April, and setting them back 20 minutes on each of the four Sundays in September, to allow for bright late summer afternoons.

seven hours each day. Multiplying 183 nights by 7 hours; then by 100,000 for the number of inhabitants; then dividing the product by two (since a half pound of wax and tallow were needed per hour of burning); and finally multiplying the quotient by 30, for the amount each pound cost, he reached the astounding sum of 96,075,000 in Parisian currency. “An immense sum!” he wrote, “that the city of Paris might save every year, by the economy of using sunshine instead of candles. If it should be said, that people are apt to be obstinately attached to old customs, and that it will be difficult to induce them to rise before noon, consequently my discovery can be of little use; I answer, Nil desperandum. I believe all who have common sense, as soon as they have learnt from this paper that it is daylight when the sun rises, will contrive to rise with him; and, to compel the rest, I would propose the following regulations…” His proposed regulations included that a tax be laid on every window built with shutters to keep out the sunlight; candles rationed to one pound per family per week; guards posted to stop carriages riding the streets after sunset (with the exception of those transporting emergency personnel); every morning with the rising of

“We shall not rob ourselves of sleep. On the contrary, we may sleep better, for 80 minutes more daylight in our waking hours will leave 80 minutes more darkness for our sleeping hours. By those who do not retire to rest until the early hours of the morning and by those who sleep with open windows, the advantage of not being aroused by the sun so early, as they frequently now are, will not be unappreciated.” But he didn’t stop at words. He spent large amounts of money lobbying, urging Londoners to implement his idea. It took about a year for his efforts to attract the attention of authorities, and a bill that would obligate citizens to adjust their clocks on eight occasions throughout the year was introduced in the House of Commons. It didn’t pass. The bill was introduced in Parliament several more times, each time being met with ridicule and opposition. Those with farming interests especially, knowing how resistant animals were to change of schedule, opposed the plan vehemently.

Seeing the Light During World War I, wanting to conserve energy, Germany and Austria took action, advancing the clock one hour on April 30 of 1916, a move that was imme-

diately implemented by nearby European countries. The act was pushed through in Britain three weeks later (sadly, Willet was no longer alive to see the fruits of his labor). The law was met in London with a storm of opposition and confusion, with some embracing “Summer Time” and other industries still operating on Greenwich Time. A slogan used by protesting citizens was, “Give us back our stolen hour.” It wasn’t until 1918 and their entrance to the World War II scene that the U.S. jumped onto the bandwagon, embracing summer daylight saving time. However as soon as the war was over, this unpopular law saw itself repealed, despite President Wilson’s attempt to keep it in place. After that, each local district was tasked with deciding whether they would observe daylight saving time, and only a few states, and three major cities (NYC, Philly and Chicago) would adjust their clocks to take advantage of the daylight hours. During World War II, daylight saving time, then called “War Time,” was instituted yearround across the country. Just like post-World War I, once the war was over, it fell under state or local jurisdiction once again to decide whether to observe DST and when it would start and end. This caused major confusion for several industries that needed their different locales’ clocks in sync, mainly the broadcasting industry, railways, airlines and bus companies. New schedules had to be published with a hodgepodge of minutia detailing the DST status of each location. The confusion was so great, and the clock adjustments so varied from little place to little place, that on the 35-mile stretch of highway between Moundsville, West Virginia, and Steubenville, Ohio, the passengers had to endure seven time changes! Furthermore, one year, 23 different pairs of DST start and end dates were used in Iowa alone. The time inconsistencies across the country were so great that the Interstate Commerce Commission, which regulated the railroads and acted as the nation’s timekeeper, was immobilized. Finally, the Uniform Public Law was signed by President Lyndon Johnson in 1966, and it took just over a year for all of the U.S. to operate on daylight saving time simultaneously. Today, daylight saving time begins on the second Sunday of March and ends on the last Sunday of November, except for in the states that do not operate under DST at all (Arizona, Hawaii, as well as the eastern time zone portion of Indiana).

Pending Changes to DST Soaking Up the Sunshine Florida Senator Marco Rubio filed a bill in hopes that Florida’s clock would not fall back this November. His “Sunshine Protection Act,” which went into effect in Florida in July, would make daylight saving time year-round in the state, but it still requires congressional approval to make it happen. Rubio filed another bill with the same name that would change the clock year-round for the entire country! This bill is in response to the annual drop of economic activity seen in the Sunshine State when the clock falls back each November. In addition, supporters of the bill cite the increase in physical fitness and decrease in car crashes involving pedestrians that additional daylight in the afternoon will cause. Those opposing the bill point out the hazards of children riding or walking to school on dark winter mornings. For the frum Yid, the passing of this bill would make early Shacharis minyanim impossible, as a winter day on daylight saving time could mean Shemoneh Esrei no earlier than 8:05 a.m., a fact that could interfere with the schedule of those who start work early in the morning. Since this bill did not yet pass in Congress, Florida will still fall back with the rest of the United States this week, but maybe next year the sun will rise to a new reality.

The Sun Is Setting Many countries around the world, in Europe especially, questioning the actual economic benefits of daylight saving time, might be abolishing the time adjustment altogether.

So Who’s Older? In November 2007, the Cirioli family of North Carolina gave birth to twins. Their son was born at 1:32 a.m., and their daughter, 34 minutes later, at 1:06 a.m. (This phenomenon was in fact brought up by one of the naysayers of William Willet’s plan back in London in the early 20th century, who argued that not knowing who the eldest of the family is can cause problems with titles and legalities.)

When the Train Halts Amtrak trains cannot leave a station before a scheduled time. This means that when the clocks fall back, all Amtrak trains running on time will halt at 2:00 a.m. and wait an hour before resuming travel, and that overnight travelers get to spend their extra golden hour right there in the middle of nowhere.

(At the spring daylight saving time change, trains jump an hour behind schedule at 2:00 a.m., but they just keep going and do their best to make up the time.)

Avoiding a Draft A man, born just after 12:00 a.m. DST, avoided being drafted into the Vietnam War by using a daylight saving time loophole, arguing that standard time (which was 11:00 p.m. of the previous day) was the official time used for recording births in his state of Delaware in the year of his birth. Thus, under official standard time he was actually born on the previous day — which had a much higher draft number, allowing him to avoid the draft.

Lives Saved A bomb, prepared by West Bank terrorists in 1999, went off an hour earlier due to a misunderstanding in time caused by daylight saving time. As the bombs were being planted, they exploded an hour earlier, killing three terrorists instead of the two busloads of people they were sadly intended for.

This Motzei Shabbos, at 2:00 a.m., daylight saving time will end. In the spring, clocks spring forward from 1:59 a.m. to 3:00 a.m., and now, in the fall, it falls back from 1:59 a.m. to 1:00 a.m. This one night a year, people across the United States can guiltlessly luxuriate in the extra time. Although, granted, there’s a reason the clock gets moved in the wee hours — it’s meant as an extra hour of sleep!

THOUSANDS FLOCK TO MAMA RACHEL ON 11 CHESHVAN... AND MANY MORE PARTICIPATE IN LIVE HOOKUP Sometimes, when no one else can possibly understand you, you just need to speak to your mother. Mama Rachel’s yahrtzeit this year took place on Shabbos, but that didn’t seem to deter her children from coming in droves to her gravesite to cry, to beg, and to plead for yeshuos in her zechus. Aside from the thousands who streamed from all over Eretz Yisrael to Kever Rachel on Motzei Shabbos and Sunday, with armored buses provided by Mosdos Kever Rachel, hundreds more participated from afar with Mosdos Kever Rachel’s live hookup. They just wanted to connect to their Mama Rachel. They called in from around the world – from Brazil and Belgium, from Lakewood and Los Angeles, from Montreal and Mexico City – all Yidden, Mama Rachel’s precious children, who yearned to connect with her in some small way on this awesome day. Just a few clicks on their telephone’s keypad allowed them to listen to the special tefillos and bakashos of Mosdos Kever Rachel’s outstanding talmidei chachamim, who recited the entire Sefer Tehillim, Tefillas HaShlah, Pidyon Nefesh. In addition, a distinguished member of one of Mosdos

Esty Mendelowitz

Kever Rachel’s four on-site kollelim made a Siyum HaShas. This was followed by the rabbanim mentioning each name three times, on every single kvittel submitted to Kever Rachel. Mosdos Kever Rachel isn’t active only on Mama Rachel’s yahrtzeit. Through the concerted efforts of Rabbi Moshe Menachem Kluger, Mosdos Kever Rachel’s founder, the sounds of Torah and tefillah a constantly reverberating at Mama Rachel’s side. Mosdos Kever Rachel enables any Jew to access the awesome power of Mama Rachel at any time, and from anywhere. Four kollelim learn and daven around the clock, armored buses shuttle hundreds to Kever Rachel each day, and thousands of kvittlach are printed and placed near Kever Rachel from all over the globe. Mosdos Kever Rachel has managed to make Mama Rachel accessible to her children at any time. Because sometimes, you just want to connect with your mother. Who can fathom the amount of yeshuos that Mama Rachel managed to accomplish on this auspicious day, in the zechus of all those who came to her tomb to daven? And who can fathom the immeasurable sechar that accrues to those who support Mosdos Kever Rachel’s work on 11 Cheshvan, and every other day of the year?

I wanted to share the wonderful shopping experience I had at Prim. Being well-acquainted with their amazing selection in hosiery, accessories and wardrobe enhancers, and the impeccable service they deliver, I was excited to try their women’s department. My first purchase was a boutique experience. The layout of the store optimizes privacy, the fitting rooms are comfortable — with proper doors that actually lock. The saleswoman was so gracious, waiting on me and offering to bring additional sizes. I felt so pampered, and I know that I will be back to enjoy more of their service!

This past summer, I made some purchases at Chic Lingerie, but needed alterations that day as I was leaving to a simcha the next morning. The store was extremely hectic. Instead of telling me “I’m sorry, but next time don’t wait until the last minute,” Mrs Berger took my stuff home and did the alterations on her own time! I picked up the bag from her home later. Talk about customer service; I was wowed!

I’d like to add to the salespeople winners. When I called Mr. Weider to order a thank you sign for my boss, he graciously offered a double size at half price since my boss is his loyal customer. (My boss would have never known.) Mr. Weider is truly one of a kind, always available for his customers around the clock.

I gave birth to a baby girl about two month ago. My mother called Mrs. Morgenstern late Thursday night and asked her if she had any stretchies at home because the baby had to come home the next morning. We thought we knew how amazing Mrs. Morgenstern is, but we were in for a surprise. She outdid herself again! She didn’t have anything at home, so she picked up my mother with her car, unlocked the store, and allowed her to take home a large variety of stretchies for me to choose from!

IT JUST GOT EASIER TO HAVE A SAFE WORK ENVIRONMENT When Chaim opened his dental clinic in 2015, he purchased two computers and a new smartphone. He looked into installing an internet filter on his devices, but friends warned him of the filters that were available. He was told that these filters would make it impossible for him to use the internet for work purposes. They would block entire web pages, not allow him to watch Youtube videos and make it impossible for him to do social media marketing. Chaim decided to hold off on filtering his internet, but he was never entirely satisfied with this decision. He was worried about how easy it would be to accidentally come across inappropriate websites and how an innocent search could turn up non-tznius texts and pictures. Fast forward to a few months ago, when Chaim heard that Netspark was now filtering desktop computers. He called Netspark’s customer service and learned that Netspark uses AI modules to assess images and videos and seamlessly extract only the objectionable elements. This means that instead of blocking whole web pages, Netspark purifies the page and shows the acceptable sections. If Chaim wanted to read an article about dental care which shows ads with immodest pictures, Netspark would display the article without the image. Chaim’s next question was about social media. His receptionist spends a few hours a week updating the social media profiles of the clinic and managing ads on platforms like Facebook and LinkedIn. Would she still be able to do that with Netspark? One of the unique features of Netspark is its ability to filter pages which are constantly changing, such as

Google, Wikipedia, Facebook, Youtube etc. According to Netspark vice president ZvikaIlan, “Filtering social media was one of the greatest challenges our company has faced. On the other hand, we knew that it was one of the most important hurdles to jump. Users need to access social media sites, whether for work or entertainment, and we needed to make these sites safe spaces.” Inappropriate content of varying levels exists all over the internet, and user sensitivities are not uniform across the board. Therefore, Netspark allows users to choose the level of filtering which is appropriate for their office or home. Users can choose from a number of filtering options, ranging from blocking the internet entirely to blocking only obscene content, or various standards in between. There is also a custom option, which allows users to decide whether to release specific content. Because AI filters pages in real-time, users don’t experience a slow-down in page loading. And the AI is so precise that it doesn’t accidentally block safe sites, so users get the full experience of internet browsing without any of the pitfalls It only took a few minutes for Chaim to decide to join Netspark. He was pleasantly surprised to find out how easy it was to install. All he had to do was visit the Netspark website, choose a package and install with a few clicks. He chose to add Netspark to two desktop computers (his and his receptionist’s) and his smartphone, for $22 a month. “I am thrilled that I discovered Netspark,” said Chaim. “I used to constantly worry about the possibility of coming across inappropriate pictures online. More than once, I had to quickly close a page and try to forget I had seen a specific image. I often considered canceling our social media marketing, as I didn’t want my receptionist to be exposed to anything inappropriate while working for me. Now I don’t have to worry about any of that. I can run my dental practice efficiently and safely and know that I am protecting my employee as well.” Netspark is the leader in filtering technology. Join the hundreds of thousands of happy customers worldwide. Download Netspark at filter.netspark.com or visit your local TAG office.

OHEL AR AI

On cold Shabbos afternoons, when kids need to keep busy indoors, play tents made by spreading a sheet over two chairs may appear to be the perfect activity... but is it muttar to make on Shabbos? The halachos specifying which kinds of ohalim are muttar and assur are rather complicated and unfamiliar to many, but knowing the basics can help one avoid many shailos pertaining to this melacha. So let’s start with the basics. Making an ohel is a toldah of the melacha of boneh. It is assur mid’Oraisa to make a permanent ohel (which is made to last a few days)1 that is 1 tefach by 1 tefach anywhere within the top 3 tefachim of the ohel. Mid’rabbanan, it is even assur to make a temporary ohel (meant to last for a very short time) in the above fashion.2 Chazal, though, didn’t assur all temporary ohalim the same way. There are three reasons people might make a temporary ohel, and the halacha changes accordingly. 1. If one needs the ohel for shade or protection — or any other reason for which one wants the roof to cover the area beneath it — then it is assur to make even just the roof, regardless if the walls were formed before 1 See Eishel Avraham 315:1 who says eight or nine days is considered an ohel keva. 2 See Shulchan Aruch, Orach Chaim 315:8; See Mishnah Berurah 315:1, 17, 32, 34. See Biur Halacha 315:8 “Tefach” regarding the opinion of the Noda B’Yehudah that according to the Rif even an ohel made for a short time that has a tefach can be an issur d’Oraisa if he also made the walls. See Kaf Hachaim 315:54, Mishbetzos Zahav 315:8, Chazon Ish, Orach Chaim 52:4. 3 See Mishnah Berurah 315:17 for a summary of these halachos. The Mishnah Berurah says to be machmir like the Rashba and not make it even without the walls unless it is makom hadchak.

Shulchan Aruch 315:7. See Mishnah Berurah 315:22 who brings the Taz who says if there are four walls then even if he doesn’t use the space underneath it is assur, but then brings the Eliyah Rabbah and Graz who are meikel. Since this is an issur d’rabbanan, one can be meikel.

4

See Chut Shani vol. 2 36:9 who says that even if it is held slightly above the place of where the chairs would be it is still considered a shinui, and one does not have to hold it low and stick the chairs in underneath without lowering the sheet at all. 5

See Shulchan Aruch, Orach Chaim 315:3 and Mishnah Berurah 315:17.

6

Shabbos. 2. If one does not need the ohel itself, but just uses the airspace underneath it (e.g., one would like to place his shoes underneath the ohel for storage, and he doesn’t need the ohel to drape over the shoes), it is only assur if one made the walls along with the roof on Shabbos. However if the walls were already there, it is muttar just to place the roof on it on Shabbos.3 3. If one doesn’t need the ohel itself and will also not use the space underneath, then it is muttar to make.4 According to the above, a play tent made by placing a sheet on two chairs is a temporary ohel because it is meant to last only for a short time, which is assur mid’rabbanan. Since the kids would want the roof of the ohel to drape over them, as this is the whole fun of it, they want the ohel itself. Therefore, it would be assur to make such a play tent on Shabbos, even if the walls were put up already from before Shabbos (like scenario number 1 above). But there may be a way to allow some indoor imaginative play-tenting! The rabbanim allowed certain leniencies when it comes to a temporary ohel. There is a heter to make a temporary ohel in the opposite order of which one usuSee Chazon Ish, Orach Chaim siman 52 2:7, 11, and Tehillah L’David (311:7 and 315:7) who say this heter also applies when it comes to making an ohel for shade. Even though the Graz (see siman 315:9 and 311:11, see also Ketzos Hashulchan siman 120, Badei Hashulchan 11) is machmir like the simple reading of the Rambam (Hilchos Shabbos 26:22), since according to most opinions it is an issur d’rabbanan, one can be meikel especially when it comes to kids who are under bar/bas mitzvah. But since there are those who say it is not a heter for an ohel that one wants for shade, etc., and according to the Noda B’Yehuda’s understanding of the Rif this could be an issur d’Oraisa for which there is no heter of doing it milemalah lematah, it is preferable for an adult to refrain from doing it (see Tehillah L’David 311:7). 7 Even though one does sometimes destroy in a specific order, it is not because it would help the destruction, but only because one doesn’t want the pieces to break, so the melacha of soseir is done in any order.

See Chazon Ish, Orach Chaim 52:7 and Chut Shani vol. 2 36:9.

8

Chazon Ish, Orach Chaim 52:2; see Shemiras Shabbos K’hilchasa, perek 24, footnote 21, who says that even according to those who assur umbrellas, it is possible that they matir holding up the sheet because the umbrella holds its ohel shape but the sheet doesn’t. 9

ally makes an ohel. So if two kids spread out the sheet and hold it in the air where they would make the play tent5 before placing the chairs to hold it up, and then slip the chairs underneath, it is muttar. And then, hooray! The kids can make a tent! Kids over bar/ bas mitzvah, though, should rather avoid doing this since according to some opinions, this heter does not apply to cases where one wants the ohel itself.6 However, this heter isn’t always helpful. Anything that is assur to make because of boneh is assur to destroy because of the melacha of soseir. Now we got around boneh through constructing it in an unusual way, but the poskim say that there is no way around soseir because there is no specific order to destroying.7 So after the kids spend the whole afternoon using every “spare” piece of furniture to create their ohel, they would have to leave it for the remainder of Shabbos.8 This isn’t always practical since no one wants a play tent in the middle of a room! So what do we do? With a bit more imagination, we can come up with another way. The halacha says that an ohel that is held up by someone’s hands is muttar to make.9 This is one reason why it is muttar to hold up a tallis on Simchas Torah during kol hane’arim. So the children can simply make an ohel by holding up the sheet themselves, with the others going underneath — and then take turns! The purpose of this column is to bring awareness to matters of halacha. As with any halacharelated questions, consult your rav for a psak.

While the North Pole and South Pole mark the uppermost and lowermost points of Earth, respectively, these geographic poles are different from Earth’s North Magnetic Pole and South Magnetic Pole. The magnetic poles mark the location of Earth’s magnetic field and are not perfectly aligned with the geographic, or terrestrial, poles.

At the North Pole, the sun rises in March and sets in September. This means that the summer is one long, long day! This is also the reason the North Pole has no time zone, and since no one lives at the North Pole, no one has ever assigned one to the area. Visitors who journey to the “top of the world” simply stick to their preferred time zone.

The South Pole is located on land, in the continent of Antarctica, but the North Pole, on the other hand, is located smack in middle of frozen Arctic waters, and land is 700 miles away. The ice located at that spot is between 6 and 9 feet thick, depending on the season.

When standing at the North Pole, any direction you point to is south! If that’s the case, then what’s a compass to do? Apparently, it may do one of three things: keep pointing to the same spot it pointed previously, spin around lazily and stop at random, or point to anything magnetic you may be carrying or wearing.

While not as cold as the South Pole, the average temperature at the North Pole is -29 degrees Fahrenheit in the winter, and a relatively cozy 32 degrees in the summer!

While people tend to assume that all icy habitats are home to penguins, it is not so. While penguins do live at the South Pole, the North Pole is home to animals such as polar bears, the arctic fox, and orca and humpback whales, among others.

Who was the first explorer at the North Pole? Like many other conflicting stories in history, this is much debated. The official version of the story names Robert E. Peary as the first explorer to have reached the pole. Accompanied by another explorer and four Inuits, they reached the North Pole in April of 1909, and as the tale goes, they remained there for over a day to make certain calculations to prove that they indeed reached the Pole.

Another explorer, Frederick Cook, also claimed to have reached the North Pole at around the same time, but Peary’s claims were more widely accepted. However, in 1989, a researcher disproved Peary’s story, though he added that Peary must have been as close as 60 miles to the Pole. According to those who dispute Peary’s claim, the first explorer to reach the North Pole was Roald Amundsen, who flew over the pole in May of 1926. Amundsen was also part of the first expedition to reach the South Pole. Interestingly, he’d been planning an expedition to the North Pole, but when he heard that Robert Neary succeeded in reaching that destination, he changed plans and headed to the South Pole first.

This time, Gavriel is supposed to transfer a large sum for the flights. We made up to meet at 4:00. I hope he won’t disappoint me!

The factory is on the brink of shutdown, the manager suspects everyone. I must finish this business with the children, and then I can get out of here. I just need to get to my destination without anyone catching me.

There are lots of people here. I hope no one finds my bag suspicious. I’m scared!

There you are, punctual and diligent. You’ll get paid for your work, and now another great missionary operation will happen because of you!

Sure. Come to the office today, and I’ll share all of our secrets, and the names of our staff.

If I am your partner, please show me all of your documents. It will spur me on to help even more! Great!

Meanwhile, at the anti-missionary organization

They escaped with the children right under our noses! Let’s involve the local police.

Listen friends, it seems they are planning to fly out of here. If we catch them, good, but we may be too late.

As soon as they’re out of our area, they’re not our responsibility.

Recap: Shimi and his mother see someone suspicious behind the factory, and They photograph him.

THE SKY’S THE LIMIT FOR AGRA D’PIRKA By M. Lowinger Residents of Monsey will be interested to know that their community has been selected as the place where Agra D’Pirka is making history. For the first time ever, the legendary morning Torah learning program is offering a groundbreaking pilot program that will take place in the evenings. And judging by the response from those who attended the opening night shiurim, it promises to be a tremendous success. Agra D’Pirka is an organized morning kollel program geared towards local business owners, retirees, or any else who wishes to increase his limud haTorah. The program runs from 9:30 to 11:30 AM with an outstanding roster of maggidei shiur at each location. There are currently Agra D’Pirka programs thriving in many communities in New York, New Jersey, Florida and Maryland. The founders of Agra D’Pirka are never satisfied with the status quo. Despite their impressive record so far, and the many communities that are already involved, they continue to push the envelope and search for new opportunitiesfor Torah learning. So it should come as no surprise that they decided to begin an evening program in response to the tremendous demand for Agra D’Pirka from those who are unavailable during the morning hours. The Monsey evening program will be dedicated l’iluynishmasR’Avrohom Yaakov ben Yehoshua Mattisyahu. It will be centrally located at Northern Metropolitan, 225 Maple Avenue, where there is plenty of on-site parking. Shiurim will be held on Monday, Tuesday,Wednesday and Thursday evenings from 8:30 to 10:00 PM, followed by Maariv. The first shiur in Gemora will be given by Rav Yisroel Ephrati from 8:30 to 9:15 PM. The second shiur, from 9:15 to 10:00, will be on various topics, by rotating maggidei shiur including RavPinchos Jung, RavBentzion Bamberger, RavMatis Stern, and Rav Dovid Margareten. Refreshments will be served. But nobody is coming for the kugel and the fruit, says one participant. According to R’Bobby, who attended the opening night last week, “The kugel is nice but the truth is that people are coming to hear the shiurim. The maggidei shiur kept everyone spellbound and we were all uplifted by their words. Everybody was enthusiastic after that first night.” The Monsey community is diverse and the turnout at the shiur reflected that, with people from all types of backgrounds attending. “It was every type of yid,” says R’Bobby, “wearing every type of hat, and also those without hats. Mikotzehl’kotzeh, but we were all united.

Everybody who came knows how to learn and looks forward to learning.” R’Chaim Fuhrer attended that first class and was delighted. “The opening night shiurim were phenomenal,” he says, “and we have every reason to expect that b’ezras Hashem as the word gets out, we’ll see further growth and increased limudhatorah.” R’Chaim adds that “We are grateful to R’Moshe Klein and Northern Metropolitan for providing this wonderful venue for the Monsey night program.” On the first night, RavEphrati delivered an introductory shiur on maseches Sanhedrin, which included a great deal of linguistic, historical, and background information before delving into the first Mishna. “The shiur,” says R’Chaim, “was very animated, eliciting great interest and involvement on the part of the participants.” The second shiur that night was given by RavPinchos Jung who examined the issur of avodazora as discussed by the Rambam, the Nefesh Hachaim, and Rav Chaim Vital. He included historical and hashkafic perspectives on the origin and nature of this grave aveira. According to Rav Jung, his weekly Wednesday shiur will explore a specificinyan from the weeklyparsha and examine it closely. He says discussion and participation is welcome during his shiur. He also encourages participants to share what they learned with their families. “Take home the sheets and review and discuss them at the Shabbos table. That’s an extra added benefit of the shiur.” Rav Yisroel Ephrati delivers the first evening shiur and Rav Jung calls him a “dynamo who gives an amazing in depth gemorah shiur.” But RavEphrati himself attributes the success of the new program to the balabatim who attend. “It’s amazing and gevaldik to see yidden coming to learn Torah together. We have a choshuva crowd of bnei Torah. You can see from the very start that these are people who are learned. They have what to ask and they have what to add to the shiur. I learn from them more than I teach them.” The founders of Agra D’Pirka, are thrilled with the response to the new program and are looking forward to seeing it thrive and flourish. Always eager to explore new options, they are watching the Monsey pilot program closely, ready to duplicate it in other locations . “If this takes off”, “then the sky’s the limit for Agra D’Pirka.” For more information about Agra D’Pirka and the Monsey evening program, call 212-661-9400.
