In the name of my family, neighbors and friends, I would like to express my appreciation to the devoted firefighters who hosted the event at the fire station on Grove Street. Firstly, thank you for a most informative and enjoyable afternoon. The demonstrations were very interesting! The children got to see and learn about fire trucks and equipment, and their questions were answered so patiently. The excitement was palpable when one of the courageous firemen climbed the huge ladder while it was raised higher and higher. More importantly, these firefighters deserve our gratitude for being loyal to the community all year round and always available to help and save lives. Sincerely, Mrs. Steinmetz
NO MORE DISCRIMINATION! After speaking in a shul this past Shabbos morning about the needs of our community, I was approached by a fellow who thanked me for my remarks. I asked him what specific thought he appreciated, and he replied that he liked that I called out on the age discrimination that is unfortunately rampant in employing members of our community. I explained that this matter has become very dear to me as age discrimination continues to sideline hundreds of highly qualified individuals who happen to be over 55 years old. We currently have the resumes of many highly talented and experienced IT professionals, business executives, accountants and secretaries who are in their 50s and 60s. I am writing today to challenge Klal Yisroel. Let’s rise to the occasion. If you hire any of our unemployed individuals who is at least 55 years old, Tomche Shabbos of Rockland County will pay the first three months’ salary. Period. In this way, you will encounter no risk in hiring one of our qualified individuals in this age bracket. If you have an open position in your company, I ask that you contact me to take us up on this generous offer. Our job placement division will work closely

SHATNEZ ALERT I purchased these Clarks shoes, and upon checking them, learned that they contain shatnez. I would like to make everyone aware that this particular shoe is problematic, and also that shoes that have wool should be checked for shatnez. B.F.
LOST... AND FOUND! I’d like to thank The Monsey View’s lost-and-found listing, which reunited me with my lost diamond necklace even faster than I could imagine! All it took was one phone call to post the listing, and an astute employee at the office quickly matched me up with a “found” listing that matched my description. Thank you! C.B.L.
A SOUPER SOLUTION (Re: A Bowl of Warmth, Issue 171) Thank you for your delicious selection of hearty winter soups. With the cold weather finally here, they couldn’t have been featured at a more perfect time. I’d like to share a wonderful tip I recently learned of that makes soup-cooking that much easier. Placing a wooden spoon on the lid of a pot on the flame will prevent the soup from running over. I’m not sure why this is so, but it works! G.R.
A FASCINATING PHENOMENON (Re: The Halachic Ramifications of Crossing the Date Line, Issue 171) I found Mr. Tropper’s article on the international date line fascinating and informative. (I would have liked to know the halacha regarding the scenarios he mentioned.) The first time I came across this topic was when I read a book on Mir’s escape from Europe. Before the yeshivah was sent to Shanghai, China, they spent a short while in Kobe, Japan. There are two opinions
56 / THE MONSEY VIEW / November 7, 2018 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484
among the Rishonim of exactly where the international date line is. Japan falls exactly in between those two lines. This brought quite a quandary to the yeshivah as to when Shabbos is to be observed. Is Shabbos the day that the local population considers Saturday, or is the real Shabbos the day that is considered Sunday? Each group asked their own halachic authorities. Mir Yeshiva went according to the Chazon Ish, who said that Shabbos should be kept on the local Sunday. Other refugees took the opinion of the Gerrer Rebbe, the Lubavitcher Rebbe, R’ Isser Zalman Meltzer and others, who said that it should be kept on the local Shabbos. So walking down the street in Kobe on “Saturday night” one could hear kiddush being made in one house and havdalah in another. Many of the refugees tried to keep both opinions by not doing any melacha d’Oraisa for 49 hours. For Shabbos, that was possible, but what about Yom Kippur? Could they fast for 49 hours? That year, Rosh Hashanah fell out on Monday. That meant not doing a melacha on Shabbos and Sunday, which was immediately followed by two days Rosh Hashanah, plus an additional day, Wednesday, according to the Chazon Ish. One keeping both opinions would have to abstain from doing melacha for a total of 120 hours, or five consecutive days. In the end, the matter was averted because the Japanese government moved the refugees to Shanghai in China right before the new year. Shanghai, according to all opinions, is west of the dateline. Rochel G. ZOLLY TROPPER RESPONDS: I will add one interesting fact to this letter: When the Brisker Rav was asked to support the Chazon Ish’s position, although he may have agreed with it, he would not publicly support it, lest someone fast two days in deference to the Brisker Rav’s position, thereby putting themselves in a position of pikuach nefesh.
APPRECIATING THE APPRECIATION (Re: Sales Superstar, Issue 171) I would like to thank Leah and Chana Huss who submitted my name to the Sales Superstar contest, as well as my coworkers who were so excited when this week’s issue of The Monsey View came out. They make Tip Top a great place to shop in! Judy Levi
RE: EDITOR’S BULLETIN (Inbox, Issue 171) I was dismayed to read that The Monsey View is halting all further attempts from community members to express both sides of what is now a critical, concerning community issue. Furthermore, the Week in Review column continues to inform us on the measles outbreak from a biased standpoint, with recommendations vis-a-vis vaccinations.

Halting the continuous conversation while actually promoting only one side is blatantly unfair. Please reconsider your stance. R.R.
The Inbox of The Monsey View is my favorite section of the magazine, and I read it every week. In the past, I was bothered by the fact that many readers abused this section to impose their health and alternative health views on others. Also a practice that bothered me was that readers used this section to promote (advertise) products and services. Thanks for updating the policies regarding what will and will not be printed; it serves as a filter to block out junk and spam. And thanks for the wonderful publication. A Critical Inbox Reader
You do a marvelous job, week after week, with advertisements and interesting content. When I read your comment at the end of the letters section, it made sense. It is understandable that you do not wish to start printing letters about the pros and cons of vaccines. I was, however, sad to see the news a few pages ahead. Why present only one side? I hope this can be corrected in the future. Thanks again for your wonderful work. Sincerely, B. Kinde THE MONSEY VIEW RESPONDS: In light of the current measles epidemic affecting Jewish communities worldwide, we will continue to publish updates on the spread of measles, as well as epidemiological methods being recommended to curtail further spread. During any epidemic the goal is the eradication of the disease. And while benefits versus risks assessment of various medical interventions are valid topics,

A STIR-FRY SUCCESS! (RE: Stir-Fry Dishes, Issue 168) When I see recipes by Ruchy from Cookstas, I get so excited. Ruchy’s recipes are very downto-earth and easy, and are accompanied by stunning photos! This week I made two of her stirfry dishes that ran a few weeks ago. Her sesame chicken recipe and beef and broccoli recipe were both winners at our supper table. My family was so happy and licked their plates clean! I was happy too, since it was quick and easy, and I was left with no leftovers! Thank you, Ruchy, for these amazing recipes. Keep them coming! C.M.
A DELIGHTFUL DESTINATION (RE: Excursions, Issue 166) With kids of varied ages to entertain, we usually have a hard time finding the right places to visit. That’s why we were so happy to find Och’s Orchards in your Excursions compilation! We made the trip recently, and we all enjoyed it so much! We got to pick some vegetables, see how they grow, and even pet and feed animals. It was definitely a great place to visit. Thank you so much! The Shains

Parshas T o ld o s By: Malka Schneps
“GUESS WHAT, SHIFFY? Bubby in Eretz Yisroel is sending you a package with a present!” Aviva smiled at her daughter, who would soon be turning seven. Shiffy looked up with excitement. “A present from Bubby! When will it come?” she asked. “Well, Bubby only mailed it out today, so you have to wait a long time,” replied Aviva. “Finish up your breakfast, and I’ll take you to school.” That afternoon, after school, Shiffy burst through the door with great excitement and called out, “Did it come?” “Did what come?” asked Aviva in confusion. “My package from Bubby!” answered Shiffy, her eyes glowing with anticipation. “Oh, Shiffy, don’t you remember? I said it would take a long time to get here.” “Right, I remember — and I waited all day!” In this week’s parsha, Yaakov is born holding the heel of Eisav. Rashi explains that Yaakov was trying to be the firstborn — the bechor. At first glance, this appears to be a futile attempt. After all, holding Eisav’s heel could do little to change their birth order. R’ Moshe Mordechai of Lelov, zt”l, explains that Yaakov knew that he could not physically prevent Eisav from being born first. However, Yaakov also knew that no person could achieve anything in this world on their own, but only through hishtadlus. If we do our hishtadlus, then Hashem can bring about the desired result. Therefore, Yaakov did his hishtadlus: He grabbed Eisav’s heel. Hashem eventually brought about the desired result when Eisav sold the bechorah to Yaakov. How long must we wait for the fulfillment of a dream? In Yaakov’s case, it took more than a decade. We might wait a year or two or even ten, and then we might give up, thinking that a bracha we received was not fulfilled, or what we davened for was denied. When we look into the Torah and see how long it can take versus how
68 / THE MONSEY VIEW
long we feel we should wait, we might realize that we have more in common with Shiffy in the above story than we at first thought. Another good example of this principle is the story of Yosef Hatzaddik. Yosef was 17 years old when he dreamed that his brothers would one day bow before him; he was 39 when they finally did. It took 22 years for the dream to be fulfilled. During those years, Yosef was sold into slavery, exiled to a foreign land, and imprisoned. All of these challenges were steps along the path leading to the fulfillment of that dream. The foresighted among us might have thought the passage of time alone was sufficient to “prove” that the dream was false; the pain and suffering would add “proof” to that theory. But 22 years after the dream, it did indeed come true. It says in the Gemara, “Rabi Levi taught: One should wait as long as 22 years for a good dream to come true. We learn this from Yosef.” (Brachos 55b) The Sefer Yetzirah explains that it could take 22 years because there are 22 letters in the aleph-beis. The world is constantly being created, and it is created through the aleph-beis. With just 22 letters, we can form hundreds of thousands of words — for example, the Torah itself contains 600,000 letters, all taken from the 22 letters of the aleph-beis. Likewise, the forces behind our world are brought about through a small number of causes. Just as 22 letters are required to express an idea, so, too, are 22 years needed for the basic forces underpinning our universe to bring about a given result. So go ahead and seek out brachos from tzaddikim and daven for a particular outcome to events in life. We have all heard the saying that when our tefillos are not fulfilled, Hashem might not be saying no, but not yet. And “not yet” could be as many as 22 years. But Hashem will answer each prayer in its time.

In Historic Move, Monsey Welcomes Chabad Kinus Hashluchim Crown Heights came to Monsey in a very big way last Sunday when, for the first time ever, the gala banquet capping off the annual Chabad Kinus Hashluchim was relocated from Brooklyn and into our backyard. The decision to move the yearly gathering to Rockland Community College in order to accommodate the ever-growing number of participants was made in September, reported COLlive. It took a staff of 484 people 10,670 hours to convert the massive RCC gym into a glittering banquet hall, with 528 tables set up to accommodate the more than 5,500 Chabad shluchim and guests from over 100 countries who made their way to RCC to enjoy the annual dinner. The normally ebullient celebration was somewhat more somber this year, taking place just a week after the massacre in a Pittsburgh synagogue that left eleven elderly people dead and ten years after the terrorist attack in Mumbai, India, that killed
Chabad shaliach Gabi Holtzberg and his wife Rivky. Still, as always, the night was filled with inspirational speeches demonstrating how Chabad’s outreach efforts have changed lives and brought countless individuals closer to their Yiddishkeit. An annual tradition of having the name of every shaliach and their home location announced was one of the highlights of the night, which ended with thousands of men weaving their way around the room singing and dancing joyously. This year’s kinus stands in stark contrast to the very first gathering of shluchim, which was held in 1983 Lubavitch World Headquarters at 770 Eastern Parkway in a conference room, with just 65 emissaries in attendance. Although many large events have been held in RCC in the past, the kinus was the largest gathering of rabbis in a single location, according to The Journal News.
Rabbi Yosef Chaim Kantor, a former Monsey resident who now serves as the Chabad rabbi in Bangkok, Thailand, said that being able to join with shluchim who live in remote cities throughout the globe is an experience that allows each one to fortify himself for the year to come. “We come together… and soak up the incredible energy and enthusiasm and joy that’s taking place under this roof,” said Rabbi Kantor. Those words were echoed by Rabbi Yisroel Altein, one of several Chabad shluchim who live in Pittsburgh. Rabbi Altein said that he has heard messages of support from all across the globe, but none could compare to the feeling of being physically present at the kinus. “When you come here… there’s people from all over the world, thousands of people,” observed Rabbi Altein. “They embrace you. It’s really an uplifting feeling that you take back to your communities.”
Update on the Measles Epidemic The number of confirmed measles cases in the Monsey area rose to 46 last weekend, with the Department of Health awaiting results on nine other possible cases. Two children from the Monsey area were hospitalized with the measles, one of whom had to be treated in the pediatric intensive care unit. New York State Health Commissioner Dr. Howard Zucker said that he has met with 100 local rabbis in two separate meetings at Refuah Health Center in New Square, as well as a women’s group, school administrators and local medical professionals. Dr. Ruppert has been working closely with yeshivos and rabbanim in the Monsey area in order to
74 / THE MONSEY VIEW / November 7, 2018 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484
get as many people as possible vaccinated against the measles. Seventeen cases of the measles that can be traced back to an outbreak in Eretz Yisroel have been reported in Williamsburg and Boro Park, with four more confirmed cases reported in Lakewood. Tragically, an 18-month-old girl from Yerushalayim died last week from measles-related complications in Shaarei Zedek Medical Center. To date, 2,100 vaccines have been administered in Rockland County since the measles outbreak began. According to Dr. Ruppert, approxi-
mately 1,900 of those were given by Refuah Health Center, a facility she described as “an excellent partner.”

It may be rarely enforced, but one local resident found himself slapped with a ticket for violating Rockland County Local Law 349 by smoking in a car in the presence of minors. The Journal News reported that police officers who pulled over a car on West Eckerson Road last week were greeted by a cloud of smoke when the 73-year-old driver rolled down his window. To prevent children from being put in circumstances that are beyond their control.” Fines for violating the Smoking Safety Act range from $75 to $150 for a first offense and $150 to $250 for further violations.

“He told you what ?!” I was shocked. Our Rebbe did not usually give surprising answers to our everyday questions. Then again, maybe this wasn’t exactly your “everyday” question. The name we had decided on for our new baby was Yehuda. It just seemed to make so much sense. We did not take this special gift for granted (so, “thank You, Hashem”), and he was born in Kislev (Yehuda Hamaccabi!) and in the week of the parsha describing the birth of Yehuda. It seemed like a no-brainer. But his mother, a postpartum mess allergic to reason and logic, had suddenly changed her mind.

“I’ll just go ask the Rebbe, and he’ll tell us what to do,” a frustrated Rabbi Schreiber had said after forty minutes of hamster-wheelstyle discussion (and I’m being kind with my word choice here). “What exactly are you going to ask him?” a very sulky wife had asked. “We wanted to name him Yehuda, but my wife suddenly doesn’t want to call him Yehuda, but then really she has nothing against Yehuda, but she also doesn’t really like the name Yehuda, but at the same time she doesn’t really not like Yehuda either… I mean, what exactly is our question?”

Husband had sighed. And now he was back with the answer, and I was shocked. “We should call him what?! Elchanan?!” My husband shifted uncomfortably on his feet. “Yeah…” Oh, wow! I love the name Elchanan! I couldn’t believe the Rebbe actually gave me an excuse to give my son this stunning, yet very uncommon name (at least in our circles)! The reason? “The Rebbe said we should name him Elchanan because he is a matnas chinam.” Oh. My husband hesitated for a moment. “He also suggested Yehonasan — as in, ‘Hashem nasan, Hashem gave.’” Okay, that much we both knew would be too much for my husband to stomach. Elchanan it would be. But… it was strange. Of course he was a matnas chinam. So were our other children. But… why? Eerily, the following morning before discharge, we received our answer when the doctor came to check the baby, who suddenly lost consciousness in his hands. In his words, the baby had “shut down” — all of his systems simultaneously stopped working, like a machine suddenly turned off. It was eye-opening for the doctors to have experienced what was probably near-SIDS taking place before their eyes — and our baby remained in the hospital for further observation and research — but for us, the realization was breathtaking. Elchanan. Our matnas chinam. NAMES – WHAT ARE THEY ALL ABOUT? The Arizal says: “All the names in the world are not coincidental, as people think — that his father happened to name him so with no reason. Rather, everything is with the consent of Hashem, Who knows the essence and actions of this person, and that is the name that is placed into the father’s mouth.” A person’s name is so much more than just a convenient way to wake him up. The Arvei Nachal says: “The soul (nefesh) of anything is its name. Anything that exists — from the inanimate, to plant, to animal, to medaber (human being), draws its vitality… through the letters of his name. The letters of his name are combinations of channels through which vitality is provided to that being. When a person follows the Torah’s ways, his vitality grows as the letters of his name become filled in, and filled in further, so that in this way, through his deeds, he adds life to everything… When he, chas v’shalom, goes against the Torah, the letters of his name become emptied out of their filling and his vitality becomes limited to receiving only his basic sustenance alone… And if he continues to do further evil, he may even lose the actual letters of his name, and [when that happens] invariably he dies and is lost from the world.”1 The name of a person includes everything about him, from his essence2 and personal characteristics to

his unique mission3 in this world and everything that will happen to him throughout his life. In fact, not only his name, but the letters and nekudos and everything about his name, reveal this person’s essence.4 An “Avraham” will always be a person who is especially drawn to chesed, and a “Yosef” will generally reveal a special strength in the middah of kedushah, or an affinity for feeding and sustaining people.5 Of course, we are probably all conjuring images of some less-liked acquaintances and wondering how, exactly, this idea corresponds to what we know about them, but while the choice as to whether to utilize their particular strengths remains in their hands, we can be assured that the name they were given did, in fact, bestow them with extra capabilities in this area. The ramifications are frightening. Not only does the name that the parents choose “happen” to indicate this child’s particular strengths and mission, but the parents’ choice can, in fact, also create their child’s strengths and capabilities.6 Our choices may affect our children’s chances of being tzaddikim or succeeding in certain spiritual and physical areas! Of course, that is mindboggling and frightening, not the least so because we don’t have the ability to know what choices are “good” for this child and what are not. That’s because a name does not exist in a vacuum — it is dependent on “combinations,” time and place, as well as so many other things that standard people simply cannot know. There really is no way for us to know which name will do what for our child, unless guided by a gadol who is proficient in the
secrets of names. This is where emunah comes in — and the knowledge that the names we choose for our children are guided by ruach hakodesh.7 (Even if it feels like we chose that name only because it would make our mother-inlaw happy.) This is also why a person’s name is such a precious and intrinsic part of who they are — because it is. At the same time, much like everything else about bechirah, the secrets of naming a child are deeper than we can comprehend. The child’s name is predetermined, but we have our job cut out for us nonetheless. Since we have no understanding of the kabbalistic ramifications of different names and their combinations, determining those is not part of our bechirah. What is part of our role is to make sure we understand the significance of a name, and ensure that we give our child a strong root — one that comes from kedushah.8 It is for this reason that our gedolim have passionately spoken against giving a child a non-Jewish name or even nickname.9 In sefer Shema Yisrael,10 the author pleads with people not to give their children non-Jewish names, since “the name is actually the neshamah of the person, and by giving them [non-Jewish] names, one makes all their vitality come from the Sitra Achra.”11 The thought is frightening. NAMING AFTER A TZADDIK OR GRANDPARENT Of course, when naming our son Elchanan, all my husband had in mind was his Rebbe’s directive, and of course, his wife closed her
Interesting Naming Customs 1. Some people choose to name a girl after a grandfather, or a boy after a grandmother (for example, Dan after Dinah or Rafaella after Rafael). While it is perfectly acceptable to do so, the general advice is that if another child of the opposite gender is then born, the parents should consider the original name “taken” and not name this child after the grandparent too. 2. Many people are afraid to name a child after someone who had experienced suffering in his life, or died young. This is rooted in many sources, and a gadol should always be consulted (just as a gadol should be consulted with any question regarding naming a child). However, when it comes to naming a child after a relative who had perished in the Holocaust, there is a nearly unanimous consensus that there is no problem in doing so, since dying in wartime does not mean anything about the person’s mazel — which is what concerns us when naming a child after a person who died young.23 3. There is actually no source in the Torah for giving a child two names… although it is okay to do so. 4. A good segulah for ensuring that a child will survive (i.e., after other siblings’ early deaths) is to give him a name that includes Hashem’s Name, such as Shmuel, Rafael, Michael, Yisroel, Yirmiyah, Eliyahu, Yeshayah, and so on. Others suggest that the child be called Alter (or Alta, for a girl) until he grows up, and then a different name can be given.24 5. In a family in which babies are born ill, a segulah to ensure the baby’s health is to name him after an animal, e.g., Tzvi or Aryeh. In fact, in Zecher Dovid, Rav Dovid Zachut, zt”l, refers to this segulah as “tried and true.” 6. When a child is born, the name should be given no earlier than the customary time for naming. If government regulations require parents to provide the child’s name earlier (e.g., for a birth certificate), one should try not to actually verbalize the name, but merely write it on paper.25 7. If a baby was born prematurely, he may be named immediately so that one can daven for him using his full name.26

eyes at the bris and fervently thought of Rav Elchanan Wasserman, just in case. Turns out we were both right. Whereas in the past, the custom was to name a child after an event, with time the custom changed, and in general, children are named after grandparents or gedolim. Doing so connects the child to his namesake and provides the child with a huge potential for success in life. In fact, the Noam Elimelech teaches that there are three things that cause a person to become a tzaddik, the third of which is when he is named after a tzaddik.12 Other people have the custom to name a child after their parents or
story illustrates this point — no less than it does the esoteric dimension of “choosing” a child’s name: There was a couple who gave birth to a child who wasn’t well. For the first few days following the child’s birth, the parents were too overwhelmed by their grief to even consider the name that they were soon going to choose for their child. Then the grieving father happened to notice a sefer in the beis midrash, which spoke about every person’s unique mission. In it, the anonymous author explained that every person is given a mission that nobody else in the world other than himself can accomplish. This mes-
The parents’ choice can, in fact, also create their child’s strengths and capabilities. ancestors — whether deceased (Ashkenazim) or even alive (Sephardim). In fact, the Belzer Rebbe would say that naming a child after an ancestor is a segulah for the child to enjoy a long life!13 What seems to be pretty clear from responses provided by gedolim from the entire spectrum of Jewish communities is that one may name his child after his rebbe or after his parent — but not both.14 Some add that if the parent was also a gadol, one may combine his parent’s name with a gadol’s.15 Interestingly enough, there are many gedolim who maintain that combining two names simply creates a new name that is no longer related to either. The Nesivos Shalom strongly maintained this opinion, as did the Chazon Ish — although notably, not all gedolim direct people in this way. As with everything, a gadol must be consulted. I like to think that the following

sage gave the father tremendous chizuk, and he shared his newfound understanding and acceptance with his wife. Now they felt ready to move on and began discussing the name they would give their child. At first, they considered Yosef Shalom, after Rav Elyashiv, but then the wife suddenly remembered that one of their living grandparents was also named Yosef. One of them suggested adding the name Noach to the name Shalom — to suggest the peace of mind and acceptance that they now felt after reading the sefer, whose author they did not know. The husband approached his rosh yeshivah to receive a bracha before naming their baby, and shared the events that led to their choosing this particular and unusual combination. It did not take the rosh yeshivah long to realize who the “anonymous” author of the sefer was — the Nesivos Shalom, whose name was… Shalom Noach.
BUT WHAT IF BUBBY’S NAME WAS TZLALPONIS? Well, actually, naming a child Tzlalponis is a segulah for her to live (a proven advice given to women whose babies died early), but… well, it isn’t exactly conducive to the child’s confidence on the playground. What to do when the grandparent’s name is unusual, or not accepted in the circles the child will be moving in? Most gedolim agree that a child should not be given a name that may cause her embarrassment as she grows up. Another name should be given, and the child should generally be called by that second name. I’ll never forget the Slonimer Rebbe’s response when my brother went to him for a bracha before naming one of his daughters after a grandmother with an uncommon name. “My wife doesn’t mind,” my brother assured the Rebbe as he told him the name they had chosen. “Ah,” said the Rebbe. “But what about the baby? Did you ask her if she minds?” WHO DECIDES? We women love to point out that it’s a custom for the mother to be the first to choose a name for her child. An interesting reason provided is that by marrying her husband, the woman had chosen to leave her parents, and giving her first child a name that connects her to her family will serve to keep the connection strong.16 It may be of less interest to mothers to discover that different minhagim actually place the father as the one with “first naming rights,” but one thing is certain: machlokes should be avoided at all costs. Nothing is worth fighting over. In fact, fighting (arguing included, ladies!) over a child’s name in the new mother’s house is a danger to the baby’s life!17 Another great story comes to mind: An avreich approached the current Slonimer Rebbe with a question. Both he and his wife really wanted to
name their baby after someone from his side. The wife’s mother, however, was expecting them to name their baby after her own mother. What should they do? The Rebbe’s answer was that they should give the baby the name that they, the parents, had chosen. “But what about my mother-inlaw?” asked the worried man. The Rebbe shrugged, “I can’t help her…” CHANGING A NAME It has become common practice to add a name to a sick person who needs a yeshuah, but here, too, it is critical for people to always consult with a gadol first. The Maavar Yabok says: “Changing the name… changes the very order of the constellations.”18 Since a person’s name is the “handle” for the “vessel,” which is his neshamah,19 and since it is an expression of his entire essence, being and future, it stands to reason that changing his name generates enormous changes in the entire construction of this person’s neshamah and mazel. In fact, according to the Kedushas Levi,20 the reason Yitzchak and Rivkah’s marriage is mentioned in the Torah and Avraham and Sarah’s is not is that when Avraham and Sarah got married, their names were still Avram and Sarai. Since their names were subsequently changed, their neshamos changed as well. While this is precisely why we choose to add or change a name, one should never, ever do so without consulting a gadol who has a solid understanding of the secrets of name combinations.21 The Be’er Mayim Chayim, zt”l, said: “I heard from the… Nezer Yisroel… who told me clearly that chas v’shalom [should one] change the name of a sick person other than upon [the advice of] someone whose deeds are nearly all through ruach ha-
is the only way to gain true light and direction. We are not meant to understand all the secrets behind names, their letters and their combinations, but we do need to know that they exist. And what we can do is adhere to the little that we know: Give the child a Jewish name. Choose a name that will connect her to a strong spiritual root. Try to have spiritual goals — and not only fleeting penchants — in mind. Keep your child’s interests in mind — and your spouse’s as well. Fighting is not worth it. And always, always consult daas Torah.
kodesh, because the name given to a person at birth is certainly mostly orchestrated by Hashem. That is this person’s name Above, and it is [the source] of his vitality all his life. And it is possible that by changing his name, they will cut off his [source of] life!”22 YOU JUST CONFUSED ME Good. If all that this article accomplished is to convince you that naming a child is serious business, I will have achieved the mission I had set out to do. Because naming a child is serious business, and like all momentous decisions in our lives, consulting a gadol

The Chasam Sofer did not name any of his children after his rebbe muvhak, Rav Nosson Adler, despite the fact that his Rebbe left no sons. This is for the same reason that the Machaneh Chayim once wrote to the Divrei Yirmiyahu that he regrets having promised his rebbe, author of the Shaarei Torah, to name one of his sons after his rebbe – since there are tremendous secrets and reasons to name children only after family members (see Mishneh Halachos Part VI 256).

The reason the Lubavicher Rebbe gives for not naming after both a parent and a gadol is because “ein me’arvin kodesh v’chol.”

What’s in a name? Schwartz, Rosenberg, Lefkowitz, Weiss… The list of “Jewishsounding” names goes on and on. Where do the surnames we are so familiar with come from? And more, what does your last name tell about your family history?
THE MONSEY VIEW / 109
The mazel tov wishes resounded. “Esty is engaged!” “Who’s the lucky boy?” her friends asked. “Friedman from Boro Park.” Having grown up as Esty Smilowitz, switching to Friedman was quite an adjustment. “I feel like I lost part of my identity,” Esty says. “People used to ask me if I’m related to Smilowitz from the fish store. It gave me a place in the game of Jewish geography. Today no one even bothers…”
IMAGINE BEING GIVEN THE OPPORTUNITY TO choose your last name! Long or short, unique or common; how would you make your decision?! How about being able to decide between names that point back to your ancestors, your place of origin, or a personal characteristic — or having the chance to simply concoct a pretty name that suits your imagination? In the 1700s, European Jews did just that! When they were mandated to take on family names, they chose following a number of patterns. The most common choice was a patronymic, a name referencing back to the person’s father. For instance, the son of Avraham would call himself “Abramson” in Yiddish or German vernacular. In Polish or Russian, he might call himself “Abramowitz” or “Abramovich,” since both endings, “-witz” and “-vich,” translate to “son of.” Matronymics is a name alluding to a woman figure in the family. For example, “Shprinzeles” contains a reference to “Shprintze,” and “Rivkin” points to Rivka. The suffix “-man” was often added to denote “the husband of,” as in “Perlman” or “Edelman” meaning the husband of Perel or Eidel. The second most popular pick was probably places. Yidden often used names of the towns or regions from where their families originated or lived in. Breslauer, Litwack, Deutsch, Ostreicher and even Shapiro (Yiddish pronunciation of Speyer, Germany) are but a few examples. Interestingly, those who were called by the name of a certain place often did not even live in that locale, but were known that way specifically because they stood out as different. For example, Ungarischer or Ungar may have been a Hungarian Yid residing in Poland, and Pollack

could have been of Polish origin, but living in Lithuania. Then there were those who chose names based on occupation. Fleischer was a butcher, Fischer was a fisherman, Stein/Steiner was a jeweler, Schuster was a shoemaker, Kaufman was a merchant, Snyder was a tailor, Garfinkel was a diamond dealer and Seidman was a silk merchant. Some names were derived from objects used in a profession, such as Hammer and Feder. Names based on religious positions include Melamed, Schreiber, Schechter and Rabinowitz (son of the Rabbi!). The two biggies are Cohen and Levy and a host of names with alternate spellings and pronunciations (think Kahan, Kohn, Levine…), indicating that the patriarchs were kohanim or leviim. Lashon Kodesh acronyms supplied yet another choice. Katz stands for Kohen Tzedek, Segal stands for Segan Leviya, Beck stands for Benei Kedoshim and Getz stands for Gabbai Tzedek. Others selected names that indicated personal traits, such as Ehrlich, Reichman, Klein and Scharfer. Rothbard may have been referring to his red beard, Krauss to his curly hair and Langer to his tall stature. Stark was thought to be strong, Lustig and Fried were happy fellows, and Shain was handsome. Picking a pretty name based on nature was also an idea many Yidden had, particularly in the Austro-Hungarian region. Play around with a combination of these “root” names, and you will strike upon some familiar names. Starters were words such as Blumen, Hirsch, Rosen, Gold, Green, combined with -vald (woods), -feld (field), -berg (mountains), -zweig (wreath), -baum (tree) and -blatt (leaf), among others. Family names based on colors were favorites as well. Get started with Blau, Roth and Geller, and see how many more you can put on the list!
Binyamin Sugarman sports a tie and wears no hat; Hershel Zuckerman dons a long suit, and his peyos flow well below his chin. Their only similarity is their last names. When they met to discuss a possible business venture, they were both skeptical as to whether there was any mutual lineage. Several minutes into their conversation, they discovered that, indeed, their roots were intertwined.

Among Sephardic Jewry, family names became common as early as the 10th or 11th century. With the exile of Spain and the immigration of Sephardim to Ashkenazi-inhabited countries, many brought along their surnames and often “Ashkenized” them. The local Ashkenazim were more isolated from the general population, and thus, most had not yet assumed family names. Now, under the influence of their new Sephardic neighbors, some natives began taking on official family names. Still, the Jewish population at large did not adopt last names. Families were distinguished by their lineage. People were known as “Mendel ben Avraham,” or “Chaya bas Moshe,” their names tracing them back to their parents. This changed radically in 1787. The Austro-Hungarian Empire ruled that Jews must take on civil surnames. They did this so they could better enforce the taxing and drafting of local Jewish citizens. Surrounding countries followed suit, and by the mid-1800s, Yidden living between Western Europe and Russia were legally known by the family names of their choice. Many Yidden were wary of the new decree. For legal purposes, they assumed surnames, but among themselves, they continued to call each other as they always had. With time, they realized that last names were to their advantage as well, giving each family unique individuality as they spread to large cities or other lands.
Sephardi last names often point more specifically to the place of origin. There are Persian, Turkish, Iraqi, French, Italian, Spanish and Hebrew names, each rich in individual flavor and heritage.

In many instances, Lachino, little Jacob, Italian names were translated from Yiddish or German to English. Adapting names was not a new concept. Back in Europe, as families shifted between countries, they often adjusted their names to match the host culture. Berliner, for instance, may have turned to Berlinsky when he moved from Austria to Poland. Being scattered in galus caused Yidden to have a more diverse selection of family names than any other ethnic group. Is there a way to identify which part of the world your grandparents lived based on your last name? In many cases, yes. With a name like Abramczyk or Kovalsky, you can assume you are of Slavic origin. In Slavic countries, such as Poland and Russia, the use of “-vitz,” “-czyk” and “-sky” at the end of a family name was typical. If you are called Feinstein or Mendelsohn, your ancestors more likely came from the Austro-Hungarian region. Endings such as “-stein,” “-berg” and “-sohn” point to German origin, and “-man” and “-er,” in names such as Hochman and Pfeifer, are also German-based. Whether you are the only one in town with your distinct last name or you have one that fills entire pages in the phonebook, your family name is likely your link to the past. Carry it with pride! *Note: Some of the names mentioned may have been given based on reasons other than the suggestions above.

xactly one week before my father’s yahrzeit, we were blessed with a new grandson. My father had lived with us as my children were growing up, and the sinews of their relationship were formed by the triumphs and tribulations of daily life. His wizened eye could detect a dejected spirit and, with pinpoint precision, he would inject a needed dose of love and humor. He would entertain their friends, too, with his wit and intellect. “Do you know that the bris will, im yirtzeh Hashem, take place on Zaidy’s yahrzeit?” I said to my son, the father of the baby, meaningfully. “Wow! I didn’t realize that! Good that you told me,” he responded with a smile and twinkle in his eye. Despite a firm belief that a grandparent should not be involved in the naming, as I announced the new birth to all of my siblings, they, like me, saw the concurring of the bris and the yahrzeit as no mere coincidence.
118 / THE MONSEY VIEW / November 7, 2018 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484
“Do you think they will name the baby after Pa?” they asked. With each repetition of my son’s response, I became more assured of the outcome. The bris was to be held in Bnei Brak, and Rav Chaim Kanievsky would be sandek. How auspicious to have Reb Chaim be sandek for a child named for my father. How absolutely perfect! I reside in Yerushalayim and my parents were laid to rest in Beit Shemesh. The bris would be held immediately after Shacharis, and the family wanted to go to the beis hachaim that morning with a minyan to say Kaddish. With much good will and little sleep we managed to go to the beis hachaim on the way to Bnei Brak for the bris, thinking we were going from my father to his new namesake. We arrived on time, and many of my siblings were in attendance, eagerly awaiting the momentous occasion. “Kvatter,”the mohel declared. The emotions escalated with each part of the ceremony. We exchanged knowing glances with smug smiles as my husband proclaimed, “Vayikarei shemo b’Yisroel … Yisroel Meyer ben …” But my father’s name was not Yisroel Meyer.
Surely my husband had made a mistake! How could that be? I looked around the room and my machateniste’s face came into view, showing pity. Comprehension settled on me like a lead apron! The mistake was my assuming that the child would be named for my father. My siblings sought any object to study instead of my crestfallen visage. Shame colored my cheeks as I realized how foolish I had been. My mind was wholly wrapped in my error, and the actual simcha seemed far removed from my reality. Somehow, I muddled through the seudah, trying very hard not to discuss the hot topic of the baby’s name. After the seudah, my son asked if I could come to their home and help out after the bris. When we arrived at their home, my daughter-in-law approached me with a mixture of apology and justification in her voice. “You know that my parents always consult their rav about names before naming a child,” she said. “He is known far and wide for his understanding of the influence of names and their combination with the parents’ names. The rav didn’t think your father’s name would be a good fit with our names.” If I had been shocked before, now I was incensed. It took superhuman effort not to voice my inner rage. Their rav didn’t like the combination of the names? My father was such a special person; it would be a zechus for any child to bear his name! I walked away to attend to the older children and slowly began to persuade myself that whatever their reason for giving the baby a different name, it was their baby. With time, the fresh wound scabbed, grew new skin and healed. It was a true learning experience, which I hoped would carry over into other aspects of my children’s lives. Recently, this son was blessed once again with a son. This time it was within the year of the passing of my machateniste’s father. Speculation arose that they would name after her father, who had been close to both my son and daughter-in-law. The day of the bris dawned, and the scene was familiar. The mohel proclaimed “Kvatter,” and the ritual began. Then came the words “Vayikarei shemo b’Yisroel…” and the name that followed was not the name of my machateniste’s father. A little later, as both my machateniste and I stood in the kitchen helping out with the seudas mitzvah, she approached me and confessed, “Years ago, when they didn’t name the baby after your father, I could see how you felt. Now I know how you felt. The rav did not like the combination of names. He felt it would not be a good mazel for the child. Yes, it hurts.” She sighed heavily. “My father was a person with such sterling middos, but really, we only want what is ultimately good for the baby.” So true.

STROLLING down North Cole Avenue, I met my neighbor. “You had a baby,” she exclaimed. “What’s her name?” “Do you want to know her real name or what we call her?” I asked. “We call her Devoiry.” And then I told her my baby’s full name. “Wow, I’m guessing there must be a story behind that name,” she said, and I smiled. My first three kids have fairly simple names: Hindy, Esty and Sruly. They work well at home and also at the doctor’s office, and surely come in handy when I want to enunciate their real names for an authoritative effect (“Hindel, suppertime is now!”). When it came to naming my fourth, however, I knew we were in for fun. She was born on Wednesday, and I wanted to put her name on the birth certificate before I left the hospital on Friday, so we had to have it figured out fast. My husband wanted to honor his father by naming the baby for his paternal grandmother, who was named Dubrish. She was a special woman, a survivor of World War II. She originated from an

area in Hungary where the Russian language was spoken, as it was close to Russia, hence her name. My husband nostalgically remembers his grandmother playing with her grandchildren, as well as davening with her Tehillim in hand. He remembers the fried smell that hit him when he opened her door, and how she’d take a red lolly out of her bedroom for each child and hand it to them with smile. I, however, wanted my little doll to grow up with a name she would like. “Can’t we do just Devorah?” I asked. “It’s almost the same name.” But my husband wanted to give the “real” name, as his father preferred. I was definitely not ready to give the name Dubrish alone, so we started brainstorming. As a kohen, my husband doesn’t enter the hospital, except in case of extreme necessity, so we chatted on the phone every night, reviewing our options. We ran through so many names, but none of them clicked. I didn’t like the idea of adding a family name from my side and only calling her that, ignoring the name Dubrish. We were looking to add a name that would flow, a name we both liked and held some meaning for us. Thursday night, as my husband was running around hanging invitations to the kiddush, we still hadn’t gotten much closer to a decision. I was desperate and started wishing I had a baby name book with me. In the meantime, we thought of a bunch more names, but somehow, we couldn’t settle on anything. Friday morning, my mother called to share my father’s suggestion: Why don’t we reconsider the name Devorah? Hmm, why couldn’t I add Devorah to the name Dubrish? It worked, it flowed, and Devorah was a very special women, a neviah. I ran it by my husband, who loved the idea as well. “It sounds similar to Dubrish too.” At long last, I filled out the birth certificate with a flourish. In my head, the name started sounding familiar. I left it up to my husband to decide in which order he wanted the names, so it was only after Shabbos that I found out “Dubrish Devorah” was the order my husband picked, together with his father. When I called my preschooler’s teacher at the end of the year, she asked, “What’s your baby’s name? I couldn’t figure out what your daughter was saying.” I laughed and told her the name. My toddler son also has a penchant for enunciating “My Duuuublish baby,” although honestly, we mostly call our very chubby sixmonth-old “Devoiry.” And when I call her Dubrish Devorah, she just looks up at me and laughs.

Over the past few weeks, an outpouring of appreciation for the people behind the counters of Monsey’s retail shops came flooding in. When our four finalists — Mr. Brull of Weingarten Shoes, Mr. C. Klughaupt of Robe Gallery, Mrs. S. Waysglas of Sareka on Saddle and Mrs. T. Moskowitz of The Lingerie Shop — were announced, the response was very enthusiastic, and the votes kept on coming. Painstakingly ticking up all these votes was quite the task! Everyone had something positive to say about our nominees. And although it was a close call, the final tally revealed our Sales Superstar!
Announcing Monsey’s voted-in Sales Superstar:
MRS. T. MOSKOWITZ of
THE LINGERIE SHOP

WHAT OUR VOTERS HAD TO SAY ABOUT THE AMAZING FINALISTS: Mrs S. Waysglas from Sareka on Saddle is our star!
I’d like to submit a vote for Mrs. Waysglas of Sareka, who is a great help to me whenever I shop there!
I don’t think I’ve ever seen Mr. Brull when he’s not in a jolly mood (a hard feat for someone working at a shoe store! — pun intended).
My vote is for Mrs. T. Moskowitz at The Lingerie Shop. She is always out there to help each and every customer courteously and with an honest opinion.
Mr. Brull is the best by far. He should be nominated as Monsey’s Sales Superstar!
I’d like to vote for Mrs. C. Klughaupt of Robe Gallery. I always feel like a VIP when I walk in. In a non-pushy and kind way, she’s always super helpful!
I’d like to vote for Mrs C. Klughaupt and her role model, her mother! They are both extremely pleasant, patient and accommodating, and whether it is erev yom tov or during a quiet time of the year, there is never pressure. Thank you so much for your expertise and advice!
When I shop at The Lingerie Shop, I literally feel like I have my own mother shopping with me. Mrs. Moskowitz is kind, helpful and honest, no matter how hectic the place gets.
This was a pretty tough decision, but because I can only cast one vote I say: Chantzy Klughaupt is a salesperson beyond comparison! And so I vote for her as Monsey’s Sales Superstar!
Mr. Brull gets our vote. While all nominees surely deserve to win, Mr. Brull certainly stands alone by how he freely stoops down to foot level and gets comfortable on the bare floor in order to perfectly fit his little customers’ feet!

Sarah from Sareka is the nicest salesperson. She’s always helping everyone with a smile on her face!
Mrs. Tzurty Moskowitz is by far the nicest, most honest, most patient and kindest saleslady. She always makes you feel like you are the only one she needs to serve right now. I really think she deserves the honor.
If not for Sarah from Sareka, I wouldn’t have what to wear!
I would like to cast my vote for Mrs. Moskowitz. Her service and advice is always spot-on.
Sarah Waysglas provides unbelievable service and is tremendously courteous!
I’ve had so many beautiful experiences at Robe Gallery! I always feel so at home shopping there. Chantzy gives everyone her honest opinion and makes them feel like they’re the only customer, even when the store is very busy! She definitely deserves to win!
Besides the service that Robe Gallery offers, which was already mentioned, the care that they all take to make sure anything being bought is tznius’dig makes that store so comfortable to shop in. I know they really care about what I am buying and don’t only want to make a sale.
Every time I walk into Weingarten Shoes, may it be for a pair of Shabbos shoes, winter boots or Crocs, I am always met with the same friendly smile, unmatched patience and expertise of Mr. Brull. He’s an awesome guy!
I’m voting for Mr. Brull. His expertise, calm demeanor and patience, as well as his always being there with a smile, definitely makes him a number-one salesperson.
I truly think that Mr. Brull from the shoe store deserves an applause. It’s the patience and courtesy he delivers to his clients even more than the goods. Being a new Monsey resident, I found Weingarten so kid- and mother-friendly.
I have been living in Monsey for quite a while. Whenever I go to The Lingerie Shop, Mrs. Moskowitz is helpful, calm and smiling, and always makes sure to have a good word for everyone.
November 7, 2018 / THE MONSEY VIEW / 129 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484
MORE HONORARY MENTIONS I often walk into Supreme Health Foods unsure, but once discussing my needs with Mrs. Nissen, I am always clearer with what items will work for me. Her advice is priceless. Going so much further than sales alone, Mrs. Nissen even gives me tips on food preparation and what to expect from products I purchase. She honestly reviews the pros and cons of different products available and gives me the space to make my decision.
I’ve never written to any publication in the past. I’m usually content with reading other people’s letters, glad that they found the time to respond, and I find myself agreeing many times with their views and opinions. When the Monsey Sales Superstar contest was introduced, I was certain I’d find the wonderful, caring and eager-to-please staff of Sock Shoppe included in the grand finalists, but was shocked to see that they weren’t! Each and every one of their friendly staff is deserving of their own recognition and award! This certainly called for breaking my regular habit, and entering the contest — albeit late in the game. Also, I feel that in a way, an injustice was done to the many shops that have such wonderful, outstanding and award-winning staff, and were not mentioned. For example: The Chasunah Depot, Green Tag, Chapellerie, Shoe Barn, Taubers, Coat Collection, F&F, Pinks and Blues, French Seam, Sunview, Baby Dreams, and the list goes on and on and on. In addition, many salespeople recognized in some shops have coworkers that are equally devoted, and try so hard to please (think The Lingerie Shop, Weingarten...). This is all part of what makes Monsey so special! Enjoy Monsey shopping!

It’s a treat to go into Linen by Mimi and be helped by Mrs. Lefkowitz. She has impeccable taste and a knack for style, and I trust her opinion — she always points out exactly what I want. And once I select the most beautiful gift, her expert wrapping and creative touches elevate the gift to even so much more! It’s a pleasure to be served by salespeople who are passionate about their jobs.
Thank you for the wonderful opportunity you are providing for people who can now express their appreciation to stores. I’ve had the most wonderful experience shopping at Lulu. I have a daughter with special needs, and they’ve been exceptionally nice in letting me take things home to try on, even giving me several days to return the items, knowing it’s not easy shopping for her. I am really grateful to them.
Which game for a eight-year-old? What will build my daughter’s math skills? What makes a good gift for a young boy? Which game is Shabbos-friendly? Previously, I’d spend an endless amount of time in the game aisle in Toys 4 U, trying to figure out which game to take home. Since Mrs. Roth is in the store, my questions get answered, and the games I come home with always hit the mark! Thank you, Mrs. Roth, for your invaluable advice, time and again. You are truly a game-changer in toy shopping!
Everyone knows how busy and hectic a uniform store gets before the school season begins. However, whenever I go to the Uniform Headquarters with my girls, Simi Silber always greets me (and everyone else) with a warm smile. She is so patient and helpful. I noticed more than once how she was so sensitive and tactful to girls who were very large sizes and felt uncomfortable. She is truly an amazing saleswoman!
How can you measure dignity? How can you put a price on self-esteem? How can you estimate the ripple effect of one saleslady’s acceptance? I’m a baalas teshuvah currently residing in Spring Valley with my growing family. Anyone who is lucky enough to be born frum doesn’t have an inkling of the difficulties of bringing up a family in such a wonderful close-knit community. I am constantly second-guessing myself, and even after so many years, there are many fine nuances that I seem to be missing. If there is one place that completely befuddles me, it’s a store that only sells robes. I mean, from the world I’m coming from, there is no such a thing as a “robe.” When you’re dressed you’re wearing a proper dress, and when you’re lounging — a nightgown or some ratty old sweatshirt. Wearing a glamorous robe and being considered dressed is a completely new experience for me! You can imagine the first time I stepped into The Lingerie Shop — I was completely confused. Enter Mrs. Desser. I will never. Ever. Ever. Forget. The very first time I went in, I met the vivacious and personable Mrs. Desser. I had hesitantly grabbed something off the rack and tried it on, all the while thinking that I’m doing it all wrong (perhaps the zipper belongs in the front? Back?). She took one look at me and said, “ Mammale, you have an impeccable taste. You look so royal and beautiful, like a princess!” By now, I’m used to doubting the person who gives me a compliment — is that genuine, or did she just want to make me feel good? With Mrs. Desser, I was able to see that she really meant every word she said, especially when she pointed to me and showed me off to an elegant customer browsing through the store: “See what the veibele (it took me years to know what that word means) is wearing? That’s our latest, and look how gorgeous she looks in it, so pretty and classy — I knew that when she came in she would pick up the nicest one we’ve got.” Mrs. Desser, you have no idea what those words meant to me — a lonely, insecure baalas teshuvah trying desperately to find my footing in the heimishe world. It made me feel valued and appreciated, like maybe I am doing something right after all. I kept the receipt from that robe, and from time to time I take a look at it — and the warm glow of acceptance still lingers.
I’d like to thank Mr. Meir Fried for a fantastic job in customer service. I shop in Rockland Kosher because of him. He’s saved me several times by opening my account and accommodating my needs. He has such a good heart and does everything with a smile. Always in a good mood, he’s an amazing salesperson.

CULINARY DEPOT UNVEILS REVOLUTIONARY COMMERCIAL SHABBOS FRIDGE The first yield of the Culinary Depot-Traulsen partnership hits the market in form of a commercial refrigeration lineup with native time-based Sabbath mode Culinary Depot has long been synonymous with marquee kitchen projects and globally sourced commercial appliances. Now, the company is proud to announce a paradigm-shifting partnership with Traulsen, the legendary workhorse of American innovation. This is the story of a standard-setting supplier teaming up with “The Gold Standard of Refrigeration”. One of many slated breakthroughs is the first-ever commercial refrigerator featuring a factory-installed, automatic, time-based Shabbos Mode. While other appliances like ovens, warming drawers, and residential refrigerators have for years been offered with a Shabbos Mode feature, the market has never seen it in commercial refrigerators before. Revolution at a glance: • lnternal clocks auto-initiate Shabbos Mode at 2pm on Fridays (Prior to earliest zman) • Shabbos Mode auto-shuts at 10pm on Saturdays (Past latest zman) • Electronic display and in-fridge lighting system remain off while in Shabbos mode • Evaporator does not react to door movement while in Shabbos mode
• Unit remains in Shabbos Mode even when starting up after power outage • Manual activation/deactivation is perfect for chagim and overrides No one but the nation’s leading supplier of commercial foodservice equipment could bring such a product line to market. To ensure all halachic t’s are crossed and i’s dotted, Culinary Depot assembled an expansive rabbinic panel composed of verified experts in the use implications of such machinery. Following months of research and development, the CRC, the Orthodox Union, and Rabbi Tzvi Ortner have all affixed their unequivocal approval to these refrigerators for use on Shabbos and Yom tov. ltem: This new certification joins the ranks of other Culinary Depot originals, including the Vulcan Kosher Convection Oven and Metro Shabbos Warmer, which have been developed to preempt issues of bishul akum and also feature a Shabbos mode. The full lineup of Traulsen Shabbos Mode commercial refrigeration units, all of which are Energy Star certified, is now available exclusively through Culinary Depot-just in time for pre-winter upgrades. AII required spec tweaks
can also be applied to any Traulsen G-Series “dealer’s choice” refrigerator or freezer, promising swift and broad adoption of these new technologies in kosher kitchens everywhere. With this, Culinary Depot is reasserting the best-known truth in the industry: There is only one destination for a Shabbos-compliant commercial kitchen-or just about any type of custom kitchen imaginable. A live display of the Shabbos Mode commercial refrigerator, Vulcan Kosher Convection Oven and Metro Shabbos Warmer will command Booth #332 at this year’s Kosherfest scheduled for November 13-14 at Meadowlands Exposition Center in Secaucus, NJ. For more information visit www.culinarydepotinc.com or call 888.845.8200 About Culinary Depot: Culinary Depot has risen to become one of today’s premier commercial kitchen equipment suppliers across wholesale product distribution, kitchen installation, and custom kitchen furnishing. OPENING AND CLOSING A STROLLER HOOD
You leave the house to take a stroll outside with some antsy little ones, who just cannot stay indoors, regardless of the temperature outside. As you are busy "escaping," you suddenly feel a drop. And another. And another! Uh-oh. Little Suri is in the stroller, and she is just getting over a cold. May you pull down the stroller hood to save her from some of the drizzle? Or better yet, may you cover the stroller with a rain cover as you head for safety? Last week we started with the halachos of creating an But even according to the poskim who assur this, ohel. A brief summary is that it is assur mid’Oraisa to make there is another heter! The halacha says that extending a a permanent ohel (meaning, it is made to last a few days)1 temporary ohel that was open a tefach from Erev Shabbos that is one tefach by one tefach anywhere within the top is muttar. According to this, if one leaves the stroller three tefachim of the ohel. Regarding closing a stroller hood, according to the opinions that allow opening it, one may also close it. However, according to those who only allow opening it if it was already open one tefach from Erev Shabbos, then when closing it, one must leave that tefach open.6 To summarize, some say that even if one didn’t open the stroller hood one tefach, one is allowed to open a stroller hood on Shabbos and, similarly, close it. However, others say that only if one opened it at least one tefach from before Shabbos may one fully open it over Shabbos. According to them, even when closing the stroller hood, one may not close the last tefach that was already open from Erev Shabbos.
The purpose of this column is to bring awareness to matters of halacha. As with any halacharelated questions, consult your rav for a psak.

May one add a rain cover or blanket to a stroller on Shabbos? When it comes to adding a rain cover or blanket to a stroller, then even the poskim who are matir opening and closing a stroller hood (without requiring it to be open one tefach from Erev Shabbos) assur it, because it is not connected as one piece like the stroller hood. So what can we do? If one leaves the stroller hood open a tefach on Erev Shabbos,7 then one can even add to the stroller hood by spreading a rain cover or blanket over it, since that is also considered extending an already existing ohel, which is muttar.

THE FIRST TELEPHONE DIRECTORY The District Telephone Company of New Haven, the first commercial telephone exchange in the world, began operations with 21 subscribers, but a month later it printed the world’s first telephone directory, which listed 50 subscribers. This directory, a distant forebear of today’s 1000-page tomes, was comprised of exactly one sheet! It was titled “List of Subscribers, New Haven District Telephone Company,” followed by its address and the date of February 21, 1878. Then came the listing — sans telephone numbers! Since the operator would be the one to connect the lines, it was simply a list detailing who was available to be reached by phone, categorized by type of establishment (e.g., residences, physicians, meat and fish markets, hack and boarding stables, etc.). Later that same year, the list grew to fill a few pages and also included advertisements. This historical telephone book, the first of its kind, was sold in 2008 for $170,500!
A British phone book of the 1920s and ‘30s informed its users about proper phone etiquette. It instructed subscribers to “Answer the phone promptly” and “...not engage the telephonist in conversation.” Also, “Don’t say hullo!” the book advised. “Announce your identity.”
YELLOW PAGES The concept of a yellow pages came about accidentally in 1883 when a printer in Cheyenne, Wyoming, who was working on a telephone directory ran out of white paper and used yellow paper instead. Soon “yellow pages” stuck as the term for such a directory, and in 1886, the first official Yellow Pages directory was printed. In other countries and languages, the term “golden pages” is also often used to denote the same idea, though it has also been called the town page, silver page or rainbow pages.
136 / THE MONSEY VIEW / November 7, 2018 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484
Since less and less people are consulting physical directories in this day and age, the huge number of phone books ending up in the trash is causing growing concern in regard to the wasteful usage of paper.
Since Icelanders use first names to even formally address one another, their country’s telephone books are in order of first names! Each name is then followed by family name, occupation and address.
In response to this concern, the Yellow Pages Association claims that “Phone books produce only 0.3 percent of the household waste stream” while “newspapers, in comparison, represent 4.9 percent.” However, the argument continues since newspapers are printed every day, and not just once a year, and are also bought by choice.
An Italian named Cosimo Ferrucci holds the world record for tearing the most telephone directories in two minutes. He set this record by tearing 33 telephone books from the spine on December 21, 2010. Apparently, and this seems to be a great variable, he did not use his body weight to help him tear the books, but managed to do so using only his hands.
THE PHENOMENON OF INTERLEAVED PHONE BOOKS While at first glance this seems unlikely, two simple phone books hide a whole lot of force! Strangely, interleaving the pages of two phone books — by placing them both face up and overlapping a single page from each book in turns — results in an astonishing phenomenon: Once properly interleaved, it is almost impossible to separate them! This has stumped physicists for years, and for a while, the best explanation they had to offer was that this force was the result of the huge amount of friction caused by their 2,000+ pages. Later, however, they came up with a better hypothesis. Apparently, the pages of each telephone book are slightly spread out when interleaved, and when a person grips each book, its pages try to go back into place. In their attempt to do so, they clamp down on the other book’s pages, creating an odd tug of war. Whatever the reason, people who’ve had the time to actually sit and interleave 2,000 and more pages of telephone numbers have proven that this is true! The force is so great that, incredibly, interleaved phone books have even suspended cars!

Hey kids! Here’s your chance to show off what you made! Did you have fun in the snow or the fall leaves? Did you construct something special with Magna Tiles or other building toys? We’d love to show everyone how creative Monsey kids are! Please email or mail your picture to The Monsey View: 3 College Road, Suite 204, Monsey, NY 10952 | comments@themonseyview.com

Taxi! Stop! Take us to this address! Let’s go to the airport quickly. Maybe we can stop them.
From the little we investigated here, it seems the money came from a food factory in Israel.
Drive fast! We’ll pay you double!
An Israeli food factory donated to missionaries?
Someone in Israel funded their escape? They left!
Maybe Gavriel is connected? Maybe he stole the money from the Sapir chocolate factory?
The mission failed. We’re going back to Israel.
Recap: Gavriel transfers the money. Zurich police say that once the children are out of the country, the case is no longer their responsibility.
