AN ESCAPE ROOM SUCCESS! (RE: A Chanukah Party Exclusive, Issue 174) After seeing the Find-the-Pach-Shemen Escape Room featured in your pages, we decided to try it on Chanukah. It turned out to be a fantastic activity, really fabulous and relatively easy to pull off! Thank you so much! The Friedman Family

THE QUEST, CONTINUED (RE: Quest for the Perfect Pan, Issue 176) Thank you, Ruchy Reese, for your very informative article on safe cookware. Gotham Steel ceramic cookware are non-stick and quite inexpensive. I would love to hear if anyone has done the research and knows whether they are safe. K.G. RUCHY REESE RESPONDS: Thank you so much for the feedback; it really makes the hard work worth it. I did a quick peek into Gotham Steel, and though I can’t tell you much about the actual safety of their products, I do have to say that I find the company to be somewhat deceptive when it comes to advertising. They claim to carry steel pans, but there is a small disclaimer on the product that says: “High-grade aluminum with a stainless steel handle.” A stainless steel handle has no effect on the cooking process. For me, that is reason enough to distrust the company. Even though the ceramic coating should theoretically prevent the aluminum from leaching into the food, I would be cautious with a brand that won’t be upfront with me regarding what their pan is made of. Additionally, I’ve read very poor reviews on the company in question. If you haven’t invested in their products yet, my gut reaction would be to encourage you to look into other options.

SMOOTH AS SYLK

A PUBLIC THANK YOU Last Sunday, Erev Chanukah, I went to RCC to use their pool during Monsey Swim School’s morning hours. The parking lot near the pool was closed and the grass lot nearby was packed, so I headed to the lot below. It was raining outside, and since the ground had absorbed lots of water, so it was incredibly muddy. As I tried to turn around in the parking lot, my tires got stuck in the mud, and the more I attempted to get out of the mud, the deeper the tires got stuck. RCC security soon came and handed me a tow truck card, but when I called AAA, they said they could not tow me off the grass. At this point, I was really in a panic and called Chaverim of Rockland County. As it turned out, they were already on the property helping another woman whose car was stuck. Soon, four different Chaverim members appeared to help me get my car out, and by the time they were done, they were each covered in mud but immediately left to go help the next vehicle. While I thanked them in person then, and while I do not know their names, I’d like to now publicize my hakaras hatov to these devoted men who volunteer to do chesed for all of us. Thank you! Thank you! A Monsey Resident

Upon the recommendation of well-meaning teachers and special educators, my very bright son spent years working with tutors and being placed in remedial groups. However, even after trying his very best, he remained a struggling student with no hope in sight. One day, I was speaking to a friend, and she mentioned that the Arrowsmith program had changed her niece’s life. I soon looked into it and realized this was very different from tutoring. By following the program, we soon figured out why my son was having such a hard time, in spite of his being very bright. As soon as we enrolled him, he began to work on exercises that strengthened the weak parts of his brain, and within months we saw a big change. His anxiety melted away as he began to understand the world around him, and the program built up his memory, comprehension and processing speed and ability. He is now excelling on his tests without the help of a tutor! A Grateful Parent

CHANGE IS NEEDED As Chanukah winds to a close I find myself close to tears, wondering why schools feel the need to give Chanukah vacation over an extended weekend. Even with family parties and festivities, why is it that we have to keep our children out of school during this time? Yes, there might be a late night or two, but I don’t see that as a reason to give everyone off. Both children and their parents thrive when there’s routine, and from what I’ve seen, girls who have off (and their mothers!) become overtired, cranky and exhausted from trying to be/keep everyone happy without any sort of structure. By the end of Chanukah I am exhausted and frustrated, and at the same time, feel awful that I just want my girls to go back to school! Boys, on the other hand, sail through Chanukah with a smile, having their routine in place along with exciting extras. How much more inspiring, spiritual and fun Chanukah would be if the girls, too, stayed on schedule and came home to a refreshed mother who could really help them partake of the joy after having had just a little time to catch her breath! Girls have so many days off! From midwinter to Chanukah to when a snow flurry is but imagined… As tuition-paying people, can we please request that schools step up and create some kind of structured program during Chanukah, even if it means having teenage girls come in and teach dances, arts and crafts, etc.? A Mother

Parshas

Vayigash By: Malka Schneps

THE BULLYING BEGAN when Diny Stein was ten years old. Until that time, Diny had not been overly popular, but she had been generally well liked by the other girls in her grade. Then Yehudis arrived, and Diny became her target from day one. For three long years, school became a daily torture for Diny, as Yehudis picked on her for everything, from her hair to her clothing to the way she spoke. Then, just as suddenly as Yehudis had arrived, she disappeared from Diny’s life. Yehudis and her family had moved away. Diny had become anxious and withdrawn during the years Yehudis was in her class, and these effects lingered for a long time. It took her many years, but eventually Diny overcame the damage that the bullying had caused. When Diny grew up, she hoped to find a way to help other girls overcome the effects of bullying and other challenges in life. Diny, now Mrs. Diny Werner, became a social worker specializing in bullying issues. One day, a woman arrived with her daughter for an intake session. Apparently, the girl was being severely bullied, and the bullying was taking a toll on the child. Diny came highly recommended from other parents, so the woman had made an appointment. Part of the intake process involved speaking with the mother separately from the daughter. As Diny talked to the woman, she began to realize that it was none other than Yehudis, her childhood bully, but she remained silent. Diny listened as the woman poured out the sad story of her daughter and the bullying, and how her daughter was no longer the same happy, confident girl that she had been before the bully entered her life. The woman brought her daughter to Diny week after week, and slowly, they made progress. The girl began to grow in her confidence and finally even began to stand up for herself. During the the final session, the woman thanked Diny for having helped her daughter so much. On her way out, she remarked, “By the way, all these weeks I kept thinking there was something familiar about you. Do I know you from somewhere?” Diny smiled and responded simply, “Yes, we

60 / THE MONSEY VIEW

went to school together. You would know me by my maiden name — I am Diny Stein.” Diny did not say another word. She did not have to. The full impact of the situation hit Yehudis with those few simple words: “I am Diny Stein.” In this week’s parsha, Yosef Hatzaddik reveals himself to his brothers in a few simple words: “I am Yosef. Is my father still alive?” The Torah then states, “But his brothers could not answer him…” (Bereishis 45:3). The Beis Halevi explains that Yosef had rebuked them. What bigger rebuke can there be than for Yosef to reveal his identity to them at that moment? Yehuda had just finished accusing Yosef about enslaving Binyamin: “How will I go up to my father if the boy is not with me? Let me not see the misery that will befall my father!” (Bereishis 44:34). At that very moment, Yosef revealed that he is Yosef, and he asked if his father was alive. Why did he ask about his father? Clearly Yosef knew that his father was alive, since Yehuda just said he does not want to see his father’s misery. Yosef’s purpose in asking about his father was to rebuke his brothers — to point out their hypocrisy. The father they claimed they did not want to distress over Binyamin’s possible enslavement in Mitzrayim was the same father they had caused distress by doing exactly that to Yosef. The Beis Halevi goes on to cite a Midrash that should give each of us pause to reflect: “Woe is to us on the day of judgment and woe is to us on the day of rebuke. Yosef was the youngest of the brothers, yet they had no answer for his claims and were embarrassed. When Hashem comes to each of us and judges him according to what he is, all the more so that we will be ashamed.” On our day of judgment, what will we answer when our excuses fail? We might claim we could not give more tzedakah because we were poor, but Hashem knows every time we spent money frivolously. When we claim we could not spend more time davening or learning, Hashem will show all the time we spent schmoozing or otherwise engaged in frivolous activity. What will we answer?

THE ONLY HEALTH BOOK YOU NEED! There are many different stages one goes through when trying to transform their body and life.

Being healthy is all about giving your body exactly what it needs physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually.

First stage is ‘Do It Alone’. The common thought process is, “What could be so hard? Eat healthy food and exercise. There is nothing more to it.”

This means being active daily. What type of activity? how long? In a couple of months we will discuss it in more detail.

You are right, living a healthy life is eating health and doing exercise and it is going to take discipline to do it. But it is easier said than done.

If you want to start making changes today to your lifestyle then give me a call and I will be happy to set up a consultation at my next availability.

The next stage is to find some outside help. A nutritionist that is going to create a plan that shows us exactly what we need to eat; sounds like a great idea.

Beside for the exercise you want to be eating the right foods.. at the the right time.. in the right amount - FOR YOU. Giving the body adequate amount of sleep. Arming yourself with stress management techniques. Just to name a few things.

Allow me to take all the guess work away: After losing 10 pounds in just the first two weeks, things start to slow down. Not seeing results can become extremely demotivating. The perfect plan doesn't seem so perfect. If by yourself it did not work and with a nutritionist it didn't work then it must mean that you aren't doing exercise. The next logical step is to hire a trainer. At your first session your trainer gives you your monies worth. He puts you through a workout you are impressed you were able to finish. The next day you can not move. Getting out of bed was an issue from all the soreness. But hey… no pain no gain. Am I right? A couple of weeks later Yom Tov comes up. Things get busy. Life happens. You push the training off one session then another and another until… well that is it really. The only thing left for you to do is to try another trainer, another nutritionist, another diet. The amount of times people have tried to lose weight is inspiring. it shows real resilience. But is this what your life is doomed to be? Jumping from one weight loss program to another? One of the big reasons that we seem to be having such a hard time isn't because there is something wrong with you, it is more about the type of intervention you are using. The problem is rarely the problem. The problem is the way you view at the problem. (Read that again)

When we look at what people are doing in the name of health we are trying to fit ourselves in a box focusing on one aspect. Food. Some of us do think that we need to do exercise but the intentions behind exercise is to lose weight (by the way, exercise alone is an ineffective strategy for weight loss) It is clear to see that the solution we are using to fix the problem are missing the mark complete. Instead of trying to follow someone else idea of what a healthy life should look like you want to be learning what health looks like for you. Wouldn't it be nice to have a book that showed you exactly what you need to do so you can just follow along? The good news is that there is a book and you have it. Hashem with his beautifully designs created the body with intuition that allows it to know what you need. At the beginning the body first starts off by giving small signals. Day to day. Moment to moment. But seeing as we live stressful lives we have chosen to ignore the signals. Consequently as we ignore our body and go on with life as if everything is going great, the body has no choice but to shout louder. This is where health problem start to appear. The good news is you don't have to wait until you are forced to go to the doc to take action.

What most of us perceive to be healthy and what is truly healthy is not the same.

You can learn how to listen to your body from moment to moment. You can learn how to interpret those feeling into messages so you can take the right action for your needs. You can become your own nutritionist.

Many of us have this idea that in order to be a healthy human you need to be eating a certain way and doing intense exercise routines.

For a lot of people this idea, that your body knows what it want, sounds like a fairy tale. “I don't feel hungry. I don't feel anything”.

How should you eat?

The reason why you don't feel anything is because you have never been taught how to listen. You don't know what you are looking for.

Atkins? Paleo? Vegetarian? Low carb? High Fat? Intermittent Fasting? Eating every 3 hours? The answer all depends on who you are talking to. But when it comes to exercising that is an easy one. We know what needs to be done. Cardio! Cardio burns fat. (In a couple of months we are going to be diving deep into what nutrition and exercise really looks like.) Although the way we are eating at the moment is probably killing us and the amount of activity we do is no where near the recommended minimum -

This isn't something that you are going to learn from a diet/nutritionist/personal trainer. Diets teaches you what is “good” food according to their latest research. The problem with that is research is flawed. Simply because you don't know what you don't know and new things are proved to disapprove what they proved last time. Nutrition science is a fairly new subject especially in the field of being healthy. We are learning new things each and every day. This is the byproduct of so many confusing statements.

Trying to fit yourself into a box when it comes to eating, doing 60 minutes of cardio because that is what the latest research say burns fat (it doesn't say that), isn't necessarily healthy.

Don’t get me wrong. I am not telling you that science is something that should be ignored. On the contrary science is important and without we would be in a bigger mess than we are today.

This is especially true if these additions to your lifestyle makes you miserable, stress you out, take you away from the things that are important to you.

What I am saying is that you don't have to rely on science alone. You can learn how to interpreted your internal cues and live an optimal healthy life that is right for you. Today. The message of this weeks article is if you have tried many diets and always seem to be struggling with the weight maybe the intervention that you are trying to go about is not the right one for you.

Biggest Measles Outbreak in NY in Decades Still Not Over More than 6,000 people have been vaccinated against the measles as the contagious virus continues to spread in the Monsey area and far beyond, sparking debates and regulations about whether unimmunized children should be allowed to attend school. As of last Friday, 90 cases of the measles had been confirmed by the Rockland County Department of Health, with seven more possible cases under investigation. The measles outbreak has been traced back to a single visitor to our area from Eretz Yisroel, where more than 1,500 people have contracted the virus. An 18-month-old baby died of measles at Shaarei Zedek Medical Center, and several hospitalizations have been reported locally. The Journal News reported the first confirmed case of measles in a Monsey area public school just prior to Chanukah, with one student at Hempstead Elementary School found to have had the virus. Signs have been posted in English, Yiddish and Spanish in local stores warning people about the measles outbreak and how to prevent possible infections, with a banner hanging outside the Spring Valley Refuah Health Center bearing the words, “Measles — it isn’t just

a rash. Get your MMR today.” While the measles was first reported in New Square, it quickly spread to Monsey and beyond. A recent exposure at the Palisades Mall had the Rockland County Department of Health running a vaccine clinic at the mall, and cases have been confirmed in Boro Park, Williamsburg, Flatbush, Lakewood and Passaic. The New York City Department of Health took the unprecedented step last week of sending letters to Brooklyn yeshivos and child care programs advising them that unvaccinated students who live in the 11204, 11205, 11206, 11211, 11218, 11219, 11220, 11230 and 11249 zip codes would not be permitted to attend school until they receive the required immunizations. A similar measles outbreak has also been reported in London, with more than 60 cases reported and over 500 children receiving emergency vaccines, as reported by The Times of Israel. Anyone with any questions about the measles is advised to call their health care provider or the New York State Department of Health’s measles information line at 888-364-4837.

with expiration dates of February, April and August 2019 respectively. According to Tris Pharma, there have been no reports yet of any adverse reactions to the medication, which can include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, stomach pain, ringing in the ears and headaches. Broiled Chicken — Yum! BY: LEAH STERN As children, we all looked forward to broiled chicken dinners and enjoyed the doubles my mother so lovingly prepared. But then she was left with the job of scrubbing the broiler pan sparkling clean. Today, I shortcut and use a 9x13 foil pan and cover. Secure the cover tightly on an empty pan. Using a sharp knife, form slits across the cover, and presto — you have a functional disposable broiler pan. My top broiler failed when trying one of these recipes, so I set the oven to 550° — and the results were delicious. It did need an extra few minutes, though. This is a great idea to try if your oven doesn’t have a top broiler.

This is the basic classic — broiled chicken at its best, straight out from under the flame! Use fresh or completely thawed chicken only.

INGREDIENTS 4 chicken bottoms

Basic Broiled Bottoms

DIRECTIONS 1. Place chicken on a broiler pan, skin side down. 2. Put top oven rack on second level. 3. Set oven on broil and check chicken after 15 minutes. If tops are nicely browned, they are ready to be flipped. 4. Turn over and broil for additional 15–20 minutes. Chicken will have a nice broiled color when done.

We’re all familiar with the following scenario: You stop what you’re in middle of doing and hurry to answer the ringing phone. “Hello,” you say into the receiver, seeing your friend’s name on the caller ID. “How are you?” And then, instead of a greeting, you hear: “Chaya, put that down — now! And Baruch, there’s no snacking until after supper. No, Chaya, I can’t…” So you listen patiently, holding the phone, wondering when your chance to be acknowledged will finally come. We’ve heard it before. How today’s generation has lost the art of communication. How technology has largely taken over what used to be “face-to-face” and then, to some extent, even “over-thephone” conversations. Still, communication skills are vital for the success of relationships. When typing, you have time to think through your response before pressing send. When speaking to someone face to face, your facial expression and body language helps to get your message across. But when you’re speaking on the phone, it’s your voice and the manner in which you speak that helps you come across as a mentch — or not. Take some time to think about your telephone etiquette. While we may not be able to change the world — or the people we speak to on a daily basis — being aware of how to conduct oneself on the phone can make a difference in your own phone conversations.

December 12, 2018 / THE MONSEY VIEW / 87 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484

1. USE A POSITIVE GREETING. Whether you’re the one placing the call or at the side of the ringing phone, always greet the other party in a warm and friendly manner. If you plan to kvetch (which is probably never a good idea), save it for the middle of the conversation. First connect to the person at the other end of the line in a welcoming, pleasant manner. Ask how they are doing, and when asked the same, avoid responding “lousy,” “overwhelmed,” “don’t ask!” or any similar grumpy response. Smile when you speak, even though the caller cannot see your face. Studies have proven that when you smile, you change the sound of your voice to be more pleasant and friendly.

2. INTRODUCE YOURSELF.

3. SPEAK CLEARLY.

We often rely on the caller ID to do the job of introducing us. And yes, even if you know that the person you’ve called knows just who you are, and even if it’s your mother, who recognizes your voice, always start with a “Hello, it’s Chany speaking,” and continue with your (positive!) greeting from there. When placing a personal phone call, using the name of the person you are conversing with in your greeting promotes a good feeling. “Hi, Sara, it’s Freida calling. How are you?” is definitely more personal than just “Hello” or “Hi, how are you?” When answering a business phone call, you can keep it more formal. Say, “Good morning/afternoon. Rachel Mark speaking.” When placing a business call, state your name and then the name of the person you wish to converse with. For example: “Hello, my name is Rachel Mark. I’m calling from the Seid Company. May I speak with Ms. Smith, please?”

Don’t speak too fast, too loud or too soft. Don’t speak between bites or chew while in conversation. Mumbling or speaking through yawns are similarly disrespectful to the listener. If you’re not up to talking, excuse yourself and end the phone call. When making business calls, it is all that more crucial to keep your speech clear; eating, mumbling or yawning are definite nonos. Enunciate your words and keep the conversation pointed and focused.

4. BE PRESENT. It’s often quite tempting to use time while on the phone to organize your papers, scan a magazine, look up a recipe or work on the computer. Know, though, that by not giving the caller your full attention you’re giving over a message of disrespect. Listen fully to what the caller has to say and don’t interrupt them. When conducting work-related conversations, respect the caller’s inquiries and validate their concerns. Rude, impatient and/or angry callers are a given in every business. Just stay calm and remain as polite and diplomatic as you can.

88 / THE MONSEY VIEW

5. EXERCISE GOOD CONVERSATION SKILLS. As in any communication, be a good conversationalist. Listen to what the other party is saying. Don’t interrupt, and wait until the caller is done to insert your own thought or experience.

6. EXCUSE YOURSELF IF YOU NEED TO PAUSE THE CONVERSATION. When on the phone during hectic times (which constitutes an article of its own), you may need to deal with a child who (rightfully!) wants your attention, a ringing doorbell, or some other matter on the home front. While you should really be speaking and listening to the caller only, during phone calls at home, interruptions are often inevitable. When that happens, excuse yourself to deal with whatever has come up. Make it clear to the caller that you need to deal with something, and then proceed to do so, giving them your full attention once the matter is taken care of.

8. RETURN CALLS. If you tell someone you’ll get back to them or if you hear that someone has left you a voicemail, return their call as soon as possible. When you see on the caller ID that someone has tried you, there’s no need to return the call, unless they have left a message requesting you to do so. You can return the call, though, if it’s someone who expects you to do so just by seeing that they tried you.

7. LIMIT HOLD TIME. We all have those times during a phone conversation that one (or two or three) calls come in. The conundrum is as old as the innovation of call waiting: What is the polite thing to do — let it ring, or tell the caller to hold? The most proper thing to do in a casual conversation is to let the person you are speaking to know that you’re getting another call, ask for permission to put them on hold, and tell the other party that you will call them back when you are done with your first phone call. If it is a business call (or if you are speaking to someone whom making wait is disrespectful, like your mother-in-law or one of your parents), pick up the second call only if it’s important, after asking for permission. In all calls, never leave a caller on hold for more than one minute. When reconnecting, thank the other party for waiting, showing them that you respect their time. If your interruption requires longer wait time, don’t keep the caller waiting. Offer to call the second caller back, and give them a time frame of when they can expect to hear from you. Of course, follow through with a return phone call at the correct time.

9. VOICEMAILS: SPECIFIC, BUT DIRECT. When leaving a voicemail, speak slowly and clearly. Do not say, “Sari Rosen calling, please call me back.” Be as specific and direct as possible. Your message should include your name and the subject of your call (and company name, if it is a business call). Always leave a return telephone number, including the area code in the case of business calls, and enunciate it slowly and clearly, repeating yourself a second time in case the recipient will not catch it the first time. If you are not easily available, let the recipient know when might be a good time to call you back.

90 / THE MONSEY VIEW

10. ENDING THE CALL. Before ending the call, thank the caller for the call — or if you placed it, for their time — and wish them a pleasant day. In personal phone calls, let them know how nice it was to catch up or end with similar pleasantries. Ending the call suddenly, or blurting out a quick “bye!” before winding down the conversation, is not polite.

11. TAKE A HINT. If the one you’re speaking to is trying to tie up the conversation, whether by saying, “Okay, I have to...” “It was so nice talking, but now…” “Oh, someone just walked in” or anything else that hints that they would like to end the call, it is not a time to filibuster or to insert another thing you wanted to discuss or ask (unless it’s really important, in which case you should keep it short and end the conversation right away). Be considerate and let them go.

12. MIND THE TIME. Sometimes we have calls to make, but before we know it, the morning — and then the afternoon! — is gone, the house is quiet, and then there’s finally time to pick up that phone. But before you do, take a look at the clock and make sure your night hasn’t slipped away too fast. Will your phone call be appreciated at this hour? If you’re calling someone who you don’t speak to on a frequent basis, don’t call after 9:45 p.m. Early-morning phone calls can also be equally inconvenient. Can you be sure the person you’re calling is an early riser? And if she’s a mother busy putting her kids on their buses, is this the greatest time to call? Always keep the schedule and habits of the recipient of your call in mind, and remember to ask if this is a good time to talk before launching into conversation.

OTHER HABITS TO AVOID:

• Unless it’s an emergency, don’t call a person twice (or more!) in a row. If they weren’t available the first time, chances are a minute or two won’t change things. Leave a message, expressing the matter is urgent, if this is the case. • Don’t ignore phone calls if you don’t have time, or don’t yet have an answer to a matter. Rather, inform the caller that you still need time and when they can expect to hear from you. • Unless the person doesn’t mind, don’t “run after” them by calling their cell phone for trivial matters when they’re out of the house — or even home. • If your contact has a job, don’t call them during work hours for personal matters.

Welcome to the world of robocalls. It is a world in which phones ring at inopportune times, in which humans talk to robots — and robots respond in kind. A world in which calls with a local prefix may be sourced in India or may even appear with your own name on the caller ID. Like a deluge they have come, entering our world with a maddening crush, causing every ring to make one question if it is worthwhile to even answer the phone. The robocall: Dream tool of both the major marketer and the secluded scammer. Bane of the average man. 94 / THE MONSEY VIEW

egend has it that the very first telemarketing calls were from a group of women who baked homemade cookies and tried their luck finding customers by using the telephone. That was back in the 1950s, and though cookie sales soared, telemarketing has evolved from a state of sweetness to something rather bitter indeed. It was in the 1980s that telemarketing really found a toehold, and it has since climbed to towering heights, so much so that despite the frequent hangups, it’s still worth it for businesses to invest in the cost of making those calls. When the market originally exploded, there were fifty call centers handling the nation’s outsourced calls, with the number jumping to 900 in less than a decade. Nowadays, there are more than 6,800 call center facilities across America. (As of 2015, New York state ranked as one of the top ten states for telemarketing employment.) But that only measures a fraction of U.S. telemarketing business, as many companies have moved to offshore telemarketing, namely

in India and the Philippines. And of course, along with growth in numbers came “betterment” of technology — for them, anyway.

Predictive Dialing/Power Dialing Predictive dialing programs enhance telemarketing success rates by weeding out the leastlikely-to-answer telephone numbers from the call center’s database. Live agents wait while the predictive dialer sends out simultaneous calls on multiples lines, and when someone answers, a beep is typically heard in the agent’s ear, signaling for them to start speaking. You’ll often know when your number has been dialed by a machine due to a lapse featuring only static air that occurs before the telemarketer begins his spiel. In the event all agents are on other lines when a call is answered, the call will be dropped, leaving you with a dial tone. The power dialer, on the other hand, connects the agent immediately to the target, allowing for a greater success rate as the conver-

punch in your number manually. With this rapidly moving technology, the top ten call centers in America were estimated to collectively have the ability to make 1 million calls per hour in year 2000!

Your robocaller may be prompted by a silent lurker who guides it how to respond to your questions and conversation.

Creepy Callers Other modern advancements in telemarketing can be rather disconcerting. While we’ve all been inundated with robocalls announcing everything from changes in cheder schedules

Register for the Do Not Call List While it won’t yet prevent illegal calls, the Do Not Call Registry ensures that at least some of the telemarketing calls out there won’t reach you. Register at www.donotcall.gov or call 1-888-382-1222

us, we feel pretty darn awful hanging up on a human being… But here’s the thing: We might not even be talking to one! Much like automated banking systems, some telemarketing companies have computerized systems with pre-recorded messages that respond to your audio cues to keep the conversation going. Depending on where you’re located, you might receive a call from “Samantha” who carries an Australian accent, or “Dale Harris” of the U.S. of A. who speaks as if he was born on these shores. And while you think you’re conversing with a human, that might be only partially true, in some situations. In this rather creepy sce-

nario, there’s an eavesdropper on the line — the human behind the computer you converse with. He or she acts as the brain behind the voice, clicking boxes on a screen that lead your robocaller to “speak” the words you hear, even to the point of insisting “he” or “she” is not a computer when questioned. Generally, the boxclicker is from a foreign country who may have only a minimal grasp of English and may make pennies for a living. By removing the language and accent barriers, telemarketers, once again, up their success rate.

How’d They Get My Number?! In addition to potentially being creepy lurkers, telemarketers may know more about you than you’d ever dream. Information collection is happening all around us. Every time you fill out a form, download a program, hand over a business card, file for credit or even place a simple phone call to a business, you have engaged in a transfer of info. Lead generation agencies have plenty ways of collecting these bits and pieces to find out your interests, expenditures, debts, hobbies, age and even your cell phone number. And once they have that? They use your information, and the information of others similar to you in some way, to generate lists and sell them to companies who are looking for targets just like you. And once you’re on a list? It just keeps getting sold and resold and resold...

Do Not Call! Of course, telemarketing calls have been driving people nuts for

ages already, or so it seems. To that end, the National Do Not Call Registry was established in October 2003 to combat the scourge of sales calls. And it worked. For a while. With the establishment of Do Not Call, legitimate companies were no longer allowed to cold call potential customers on the list, of which there are now millions of American citizens. Non-profits, companies you’ve already done business with or those who have received a written statement from you saying that you allow their calls may contact you despite registration on the list. And while the list still works for legitimate call centers, how many sales calls do you get from companies you’ve never heard from (and never want to hear from again!)? That’s an issue the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), founder of the Do Not Call Registry, is up against. With ever-evolving technology, calls can be placed from anywhere in the world and are often untraceable. Many times the caller will even “spoof” the recipient, meaning they cause the caller’s own name and number, or that of a neighbor, to appear on the caller ID. This confounds law enforcement, making it much harder to trace the call and fine the company. Companies that do get caught can be fined up

Don’t Get Scammed! With hard-to-trace calls being easily possible in this day and age, scamming is hardly difficult. There are many types of scams that people fall prey to, and individuals in our own community are not spared. Here are some tips to avoid getting scammed. • Always remember that government officials will never contact you by phone. That goes for the IRS, the CIA or any other government agency. Too many people right here in Monsey have fallen for this one. Let’s make it stop! • If you receive a phone call from an unknown person that starts with the words, “Can you hear me?” you should hang up, or at the very least, parrot the phrase back to the speaker. “I can hear you.” Never say, “Yes.” Scammers try to trick you into saying that word, which they then record, and manipulate so that it should appear that you’ve agreed to purchasing an item, transferring funds, or whatever else they want you to do. • Never call back a number that seems fishy. According to law, legal call centers cannot call someone on the Do Not Call Registry, but if you call them — even just to return an unknown call — you become fair prey. • Recognize if a call is from a legal call center or not. According to the Telephone Consumer Protection Act, telemarketers may not call before 8 a.m. or after 9 p.m.; call you on your cell phone; avoid revealing who they are calling on behalf of; call you if you are on the Do Not Call Registry; or call with a prerecorded message unless they immediately reveal who they are calling on behalf of and provide a phone number or address for the company or person they are calling on behalf of. If these conditions are not met, it is considered an illegal call and you may sue.

to $41,484 for making illegal robocalls. As part of an attempt to curb illegal robocalls from harassing innocent people, the FTC has run contests encouraging citizens to send in their ideas for catching or preventing illegal marketing calls. NoMoRobo was the winner of one contest and works by filtering calls using a push-key prompt that

robotic calls cannot respond to. Callers that don’t push the button never have their calls make it to their intended destination — which is you. Free for individuals, NoMoRobo is available through some cell phone and landline carriers, but not all. The company makes money through their corporate clients who wish to avoid having their lines tied up with telemarketers. Ironically, some of NoMoRobo’s biggest clients are legitimate call centers who need their lines free to make their own telemarketing calls. Go figure.

When I was growing up, everyone in main Monsey had phone numbers starting with one of four telephone prefixes. There were the 425 numbers, the 426 numbers, the 352 numbers and the 356 numbers. And our area code was — across the board — 914. What a sensation it was when the first 371 phone number was introduced! And then came the 845 area code turnover. It took some time to adjust, but that, too, soon became the norm. Is there a rhyme and a reason to phone number digits? Are they randomly assigned? It takes an entire article to answer that question.

A phone number in the North American Numbering Plan is divided in a 3-3-4 scheme. After the country code, there’s a 3-digit area code, a 3-digit telephone prefix, and then a 4-digit subscriber number.

102 / THE MONSEY VIEW

It was a measles epidemic that kickstarted the telephone number idea. Until then, Bell rented telephones to its users, and a telephone switchboard operator connected calls by personal names. In 1879, as the measles was rapidly spreading across the city of Lowell, Massachusetts, Dr. Parker, a local physician, feared that all four operators manning the phones in Lowell would contract the disease, paralyzing the city’s phone system. To avoid the issue, he recommended that a number system be implemented to call subscribers, so that stand-in operators would be an option (as they wouldn’t have to be familiar with the names). The movement snowballed from there. Even as numbers were assigned across the country, operators still continued to connect calls. Lifting up a receiver would cause a lamp to light up at the caller’s jack, and the operator would plug in the cord and ask, “Number, please,” to which the caller would reply, “345, please.” The operator would plug in the other end of the wire into the 345 jack, which would ring in that person’s house, and the caller could then speak to the person he wanted to reach. It wasn’t until 1951 that residential dialing was established, and in Monsey, the “dial” system only went into effect in 1957.

used three letters and four numbers (3L-4N), some two letters and three numbers (2L-3N), while others still had 2L-4N phone numbers. The letters were the first two or three letters from the name of the exchange that serviced the telephone user, and they were followed by three or four numbers. In larger cities, like New York City, you dialed both the numbers represented by the first two or three letters of the exchange name, followed by the subscriber numbers, but in smaller towns with one central office, local calls typically required one only to dial the three or four digits following the exchange name. Monsey originally used the Spring Valley exchange and used 2L-4N numbers. The two letters were SP (77) from the exchange, and it would be followed by four digits.

Seven-Digit Dialing In the 1950s the confusion gave way when 2L-5N phone numbers were standardized across the country. At that point, seven-digit dialing became the norm for any phone number being dialed (ten digits for long distance, when the area code was also dialed). Phone numbers, though, went by exchange name and then number. For example, the number for the Pennsylvania Hotel in NYC was listed as PEnnsylvania 6-5000, (PE 6-5000) and not the 7325000 which was actually dialed. (In fact, this is one of the most famous alphanumeric numbers cited, and this phone number is still in place today.)

containing all the new ELmwood 6 numbers. This directory will be delivered to customers in Spring Valley and the surrounding area shortly before the switch to dial.

Other Exchange Names Here’s a list of the exchanges of other local areas during that time. Notice how, even today, many phone numbers in those areas still start with the first three digits of their exchange names. Nyack: ELmwood 8 (358) Suffern: ELmwood 7 (357) — The phone number of the Suffern Hospital at that point was ELmwood 7-5000. HAverstraw 9 (429) NAnuet 3 (623) PEarl River 5 (735) NEw City 4 (634) Over in the city, EVergreen was an exchange used in Williamsburg (yes, that’s how all those 388 and 387 numbers started), ULster was Boro Park (that explains

ELmwood 6 In Monsey, under this new standardized system, telephone numbers were first SPring Valley 6, and then, in 1957 (when the phone company switched to a “dial” program), changed to ELmwood 6 (356), often written just as EL 6, as was the case with all alphanumeric phone numbers. The following is an excerpt from an article published in 1957 announcing the change to ELmwood 6, which informed readers that with the new dial system, “under normal conditions, the calls will go through in a matter of seconds”! Because all of SPring Valley 6 telephones will have a new designation — ELmwood 6 — and many numbers will change, the telephone company will publish a supplemental directory

More ELmwood Exchanges In 1962, ELmwood 2 was introduced, giving us all the 352 numbers. That was followed by ELmwood 4 (354), which followed in 1970 to encompass neighborhoods in Spring Valley (New Square among them).

WHEN TALK WASN’T CHEAP Party Lines Way back then, when Elmwood was a household word, many opted for party lines because they wanted to save a dollar (quite literally) on their monthly phone bill. This meant that they’d get a cheaper plan by sharing the phone line with several people. Party lines certainly compromised privacy and also made phones unavailable for users while their neighbors

SOME CLASSIFIED ADS WITH PARTY LINE NUMBERS

sharing the line took their time on the phones, but what didn’t some people do to save a buck? Every party of the party line had a different letter following the phone number (J,M, R or W — these letters were chosen since they each sound distinctively different, and so the operators wouldn’t confuse the lines). Each was represented by a different ringing code (such as one long ring, two short rings, longshort-long, etc.) so that the party who was being contacted should know to pick up. Clocking In Being that there were no flat rates and calls were calculated to the last seconds, with just the first three minutes being under the standard plan, many people

would set a timer and keep their phone call to under three minutes to avoid additional charges. Calling Out of Country You definitely couldn’t call to Eretz Yisroel from your own home some sixty years ago — an appointment had to be scheduled with the post office. And the call could easily cost $20 — an astronomical sum in those days. Collect Calls Reaching someone while away wasn’t always a simple matter. Many people would make collect calls, in which the receiving party had to pay the cost for the phone call. These were operator-assisted calls, where the operator would give the caller the seconds to say his name, and then would ask the receiving party if they’d like to accept the call. It was possible to exploit the system and communicate a simple message in the space where the name was said, but it was (and still is) considered toll fraud. You can still make a collect call today, by dialing 1-800-COLLECT. (Before you do it, keep in mind that it can cost you big.) Remote Billing What if you were away from home and needed to make a phone call, but didn’t want your hostess to pay your bill? When calling, people would be able to bill phone calls to their own phone number (certain precautions were taken to ensure that they were legitimate).

Introducing… 425 and 426

So what does the 42 stand for? HArrison? GArden? Perhaps one of the two, but by the time these two prefixes were introduced here, phone numbers no longer went by exchange name. At that point the country had changed over to alldigit dialing, though in many areas, residents still fondly held on to their exchange names. In 1974, phone companies offered a brandnew feature: call waiting. Up until this point, if one was on the phone, you’d get a busy signal until the line was free. A TYPICAL 1958 AD WITH AN EL 6 PHONE NUMBER Now, call waiting allowed one to get a “beep” while on the phone. It was precaller ID days, don’t forget, so it wasn’t like they could check who’s calling and return the call later. It was this nagging, insisting, jarring sound that made you drop the caller you were talking to and find out who’s trying to Area codes were introduced in 1947 to facilitate direct distance get through. dialing (or DDD; they were first used by operators exclusively, At that point, if one wanted to sign up for call waiting, they had to change and only years later by subscribers directly). their phone number, as the ELmwood In the original system, until 1995, the first number could not be exchange couldn’t accommodate that 0 or 1, but the second number of the area code had to be 0 or feature. This is when many changed over to 425 and then 426 phone num1 (this helped switchboard operators distinguish from local to bers. After a short while, though, call long-distance calls). waiting was also available on the 356 Since on the rotary dial the lower numbers took the fastest to and 352 numbers.

AREA CODES

Today — Number Soup? Today, telephone prefixes in our area vary greatly. Between Monsey and Spring Valley alone, there are 44 exchanges! Some popular ones are 356, 352, 425, 426, 371, 578, 570, 354, 362, 364, 414, 678, 222, 659, and the list goes on…. The telephone prefixes that you will never see in use are those ending in 11, since they are service codes. Think 011 to dial overseas, 911 for emergency calls, 411 for directory assistance, 511 for traffic information, 711 for TTY for the hard of hearing, and so on.

108 / THE MONSEY VIEW / December 12, 2018 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484

dial, the lowest (most-quickly-dialed) numbers were assigned to the areas where they’d be most used. That is why the lowest number, 212, was assigned to NYC. Next in the row, 213, went to Los Angeles, 215 to Philadelphia, and 312 — which is at the low end, too — to Chicago. That also explains why Rockland County originally got something all the way on top like 914. (In the year 2000, the 845 area code took over much of the 914 region, and only Westchester County retained the 914 area code.) The highest number would be 909 (as the 0 was situated after the 9, still, making it the longest number to dial), so it’s of no major surprise that 907 was assigned to Alaska.

When an emergency occurs, whether it’s in the form of a leak, a medical emergency, or a change of schedule that makes you unavailable, a little proactive preparation can go a long way in tackling the situation. Below are some phone numbers that you should save to your contacts on your cell phone today. Also, write down your list on paper and keep it in plain sight on your refrigerator.

December 12, 2018 / THE MONSEY VIEW / 113 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484

ICE — IN CASE OF EMERGENCY: Saving this number makes it possible for a responder to contact your family if an emergency occurs. It also works well if you lose your phone, as ICE contacts on some phones are accessible even from a locked home screen. If your phone doesn’t allow for that, take a picture of a screenshot of an ICE contact and save it as your lock screen. HATZOLAH: This is a phone number that should be memorized — and taught to children, too — but include it in every phone directory, as panic can make the mind go blank. Also include numbers for Hatzolah in other areas you frequently travel to. Hatzolah of Rockland: 845-425-1600 LOCAL POLICE DEPARTMENT: For a nonemergency matter that needs to be taken care of by the police, whether it’s something suspicious you’ve witnessed or a robbery you’d like to report, it’s good to have the number within finger’s reach. Ramapo Police Department: 845-357-2400 POISON CONTROL: This is another phone number you should have available, and make it your business to know it by heart. When a kid gets their hands on something of questionable content and goes ahead and ingests it, Poison Control will let you know whether to flush it out with water, just relax or seek medical intervention. Poison Control: 800-222-1222 CHAVERIM: If there’s a need for just about anything, all you need to know is 371-NEED. Whether your locked out, stuck on the road or missing a child, this is one number you should memorize. Chaverim of Rockland: 845-371-6333; Interstate Chaverim: 845-425-4357 WATER COMPANY: Whether for a broken main in the area, or even a bill that doesn’t add up, it’s good to keep their number handy. Suez Water repairs: 1888-666-8076; Suez Water customer service: 888-666-8075 POWER COMPANY: I’m sure you’re familiar with that sickening feeling when the lights go out and you’re in the middle of cooking/baking/ bathing/trying to live. Quickly call the power company before your cell phone battery gets drained. Also call the number below if you see a downed power line (and keep your distance). Orange and Rockland emergency line: 877-434-4100. If you suspect a gas leak, call 911 or 800-533-5325 (LEAK).

SCHOOL OFFICE: Whether you need to relay an important message, a change of transportation or discuss something, this is another phone number you should have close at hand. NEIGHBOR: It may be an appointment that took longer than expected, traffic that cropped up, or some other delay that prevents you from being home on time. Keep the number of a kind neighbor, whom you can call when you see you won’t make the bus, so she can ensure your children arrive home safely and keep an eye on them until you do. When you’re away, neighbors can also bring in a delivery with perishables or valuables and make sure your home looks inhabited. PHARMACY: Besides for being able to reach them right away for any medical emergency or nonemergency needs, you want to know the number of your pharmacy because your physician will need it if he wants to prescribe anything for you or your family member. TOWING COMPANY/ MECHANIC: When in trouble on the road, you may be an easy target for greedy mechanics wanting to make a lot of money off you. Always have a trusted towing company’s contact information with you. LOCKSMITH: For lockouts or lock-ins, have the number of a trusty locksmith that can take care of the problem without ripping you off.

HILCHOS BORER \ PART 1

Since borer is probably the melacha that comes up most on Shabbos, it is important to clearly understand the fundamentals of the melacha. It is assur to separate any ochel (food) and pesoles (garbage) from each other, or even to separate two different types of ochalim from which one wants to eat only one now, unless one follows three conditions: 1) takes the ochel from the pesoles (or in the case of two different types of food, the food he wants to eat now from the one he doesn’t want); 2) takes it only immediately before eating, and 3) uses one’s hands, and not a kli that helps in the separation process.1 The same rules apply to non-food things.2 We will explain, iy”H, each one of these conditions separately in future articles, but the first thing one must

know about borer is that one only needs to follow the three conditions if there is a separation of even a part of a mixture that is combined of two or more different types of things — but if there is no mixture and no different types, then there is no borer. So the first thing to determine anytime we are faced with a borer shailah is whether there are two different types and whether they are in a mixture. What is considered different types? In order for things to be considered different types, it depends on what we are talking about. Let’s look at a few different categories. Furthermore, any two foods that taste different are considered different types. So different fruits, differently flavored dishes, roasted and cooked foods, etc., are considered different types.4 According to some poskim, even different parts of a chicken (chicken legs, chicken wings, chicken breasts, etc.) are considered different types because they taste different.5 Partially spoiled food that one only eats in extenuating circumstances is considered a different type when compared to the same food that is not spoiled.6 According to some poskim, challah and matzah that are shaleim are consid-

ered a different type from incomplete ones when one wants to use them for lechem mishnah.7 For other items, function generally determines whether things are different types. So forks, knives and spoons mixed together would constitute a mixture of different types since each one serves a different purpose, even though they are all silverware. The same is true for different types of toys and a pile of different books. At times, size and color also contribute to determining different types. A good example of this is clothing, where size, color and style play major roles in determining different types.8 What is considered a mixture? What makes the melacha of borer very difficult is that there is no exact measure of the proximity needed for different types to be considered a mixture. The poskim say a mixture is determined by whether it seems like a mixture to one’s eyes.9 Nevertheless, there are some more concrete guidelines that are given by the poskim. One thing brought down is that even though items are not touching, they can be considered a mixture if they are in close enough proximity to each other that they seem to the eye as mixed. Also, the poskim say that two or three items (even of different types) aren’t considered a mixture.10 Furthermore, one big piece of food inside water is not considered mixed with the water (e.g., an egg or pickle inside water).11 In a situation where

one is not sure if a combination is considered a mixture, then one must be machmir since this is a shailah of an issur d’Oraisa. Examples Based on all of the above, let’s look at some examples of things that come up on Shabbos that could be considered mixtures of two different types and therefore would require abiding by the three conditions of borer in order to be separated. The halacha of what to do exactly in these situations will be discussed at length in future articles, but since many of these halachos come up a lot, a short practical halacha is given in the footnotes following each scenario. Different types of food that are in the freezer or different fruits in the produce container in the fridge are very commonly in close proximity to one another, and so they are considered mixed.12 Different flavored candies in a bag,13 different types of toys on the floor,14 sock of different colors or sizes in a drawer,15 and salad made of different fruits and vegetables can all be considered mixtures. Plates, silverware and food on the average table after eating is not considered a mixture. However, this is not a blanket rule, and sometimes a messy table with a lot of items on it can present a scenario of a mixture. An example of a case where it can certainly be a mixture is when after rolling up the plastic tablecloth with all the leftover garbage inside, someone notices a piece of challah or forgotten silverware and wants to take it out. In such a case, the challah or the fork is considered mixed with the rest of the garbage.16 Books on a bookshelf where the title of each book is clearly written is not a mixture. However, if the title is not clearly written or if the room is dark and one can’t see the title then some poskim consider it a mixture.17 Getting rid of a mixture Some poskim say that one can bypass having to abide by the three conditions of borer if one throws up the mixture in a way where the parts of the mixture will land separately from each other, essentially getting rid of the mixture and enabling one to select freely.18 Others, though, argue and assur it.19 Practically speaking, since 1) it is a machlokes on an issur d’Oraisa, and 2) there is not always enough room to spread the items far enough from each other, and 3) it is not always clear how spread out they must be in order not to considered a mixture, one should not rely on the lenient opinions. The purpose of this column is to bring awareness to matters of halacha. As with any halacha-related questions, consult your rav for a psak.

THE INVENTOR While many scientists are credited with inventing telephone-related technologies, Alexander Graham Bell invented and received the patent for the world’s first practical telephone in 1876. Strangely — or maybe not! — Bell refused to have a telephone in his study, for fear of its disturbing him from his work as a scientist. Bell’s father, grandfather and brother, all trained in the fields of elocution and speech, contributed highly to his own work in the areas of hearing and sound. Additionally, Bell’s mother, who began losing her hearing when Alexander was 12 years old, also influenced his studies in this field, as did his marriage years later to a woman who was also hearingimpaired. In 1871, at the age of 24, Bell began working at a school for the deaf, where he trained the school’s instructors. A year and a half later, Bell opened his own institution — the School of Vocal Physiology and Mechanics of Speech in Boston. There, one of his pupils was Helen Keller, who was a young child at the time. For the rest of his life, despite the many hats he wore, Bell always referred to himself as a “teacher of the deaf.”

THE INVENTION The first commercially available telephone was the wall telephone, a large wooden box that was also called a camera telephone for its likeness to the cameras of that era. They were also called box telephones, and even coffin telephones! These telephones debuted in 1879 and were available until the 1930s.

Up until 1983, phones were leased to subscribers; all telephone equipment belonged to the telephone companies and couldn’t be resold. The units were repaired by the companies at no charge when necessary, and this meant that it was worthwhile for them to produce durable phones that needed minimum service.

124 / THE MONSEY VIEW

THE UPGRADES Already working under the company name AT&T (for American Telephone and Telegraph Company), Bell introduced the candlestick telephone, also known as the “desk stand” or “upright,” in 1892. The timing of this innovation was clever; since Bell’s patent was due to expire a year later, he saw the need for something new to capture the market. The candlestick telephone had its mouthpiece at the top of the stand, and a separate earpiece could be removed from its hook and held to the ear during a call. The telephone also came along with a subscriber set, which was a small box that was installed near the telephone that housed its ringer and electric wiring that connected it to the telephone line. In 1926, Western Electric introduced a phone that had its mouthpiece and earpiece in one unit, and rested on a shortened version of the candlestick stand. Later improvements included “sidetone reduction” to block the sound of the user’s own voice, and later, in 1936, a model that contained within its base the ringer and electrical wiring. Only in the early 1960s did Western Electric introduce phones that used touch-tone service, and no longer required the rotary dial. Thus, dialing — and redialing! — was simplified and much more user-friendly.

“MEET THE PRINCESS!” This new phone was introduced in 1959 with much fanfare, encouraging telephone subscribers to “Meet the Princess!” A small additional charge on their monthly plan, and the Princess was theirs. Targeting female users, these phones were small and dainty and were meant to be kept on a night table. It’s dial would light up in the dark, serving as a miniature night-light, and thus the advertisements announced, “It’s lovely… It’s little… It lights!” The Princess was available in a slew of colors, including pink, red, yellow, moss green, black, white, beige, ivory, light blue, turquoise and gray. In its original version, there was no place for a ringer — but no fear! An external ringer could be added... Sadly, in 1994, AT&T wished farewell to its Princess telephone. Due to its pretty design and limited years of production, it became a collectible phone, with pink, turquoise and black models fetching the most money.

“DIAL IN STYLE” In 1960, telephones suddenly turned fashionable, presumably due to the debut of the Princess. “Climb aboard the color band wagon,” ads proclaimed, “with its nine beautiful decorator colors. You’ll find just the hue for you!” For a one-time fee, plus an additional $1.00 charge per month per extension, visiting workmen would install colored telephones because “Today’s style is extensions in color.”

THE TRIMLINE LINE In 1965, Western Electric took the innovation of the Princess phone and took it one step further in its design of the Trimline phone. Like the Princess, this phone was of a narrower and more stylish design, and the dial lit up when the handset was lifted off the base. However, for the first time, the dial was placed on the handset, between the earpiece and mouthpiece. While the first Trimline models still had a rotary dial, they were produced with touchtone service only a year later.

CHANUKAH CHALLENGE Answers

1. It is Wednesday night. Notice the number of candles lit and the calendar on the wall.

5. They light after the stars come out. Tzeis hakochavim is at 5:18. The time is now after 7:00 and the candles are still lit. (The candle box also says that they last for about an hour.)

8. Dovid. You can see that the amount of Chanukah gelt given was the value of the children’s age, and Dovid also got eight coins.

7. Avraham. He is bringing in a tray of warm food, but is not wearing a coat.

You know the rules of the game, right? You get half of the pile, and you return one to the pile.

2. Dovi. His candles have been burning for the least time.

128 / THE MONSEY VIEW

6. Shloimy. He is the only one who has no dairy food near his plate.

9. ‫ה‬. Shloimy took exactly half of the coins in the pile in front of him.

4. Yossi. The shamash in the winner’s menorah is green, and Yossi’s shoe has melted green wax dripped on it.

3. Shimmy. Notice the receipt sticking out of his coat pocket.
