QUEST FOR THE PERFECT PAN CONTINUES (Re: Quest for the Perfect Pan, Issue 176) Thank you for your article on Teflon and cookware. As you see, I don’t get to my reading pile on time, but I clipped the article and read it today. I was wondering if you looked into terracotta coatings. I long stopped using Teflon coated pots and use ceramic-coated instead, but as I see, you’re not a big fan of those. Is it the aluminum underneath the ceramic that is the problem? If yes, does the aluminum still present an issue if the coating is intact? My cholent pot is from the Bialetti brand with a non-stick terracotta coating (yes, it’s dark orange inside). Would you know if that’s okay? Perhaps you can do a follow-up article to answer the questions above, as well as the following questions: When using a dispos-

able aluminum pan, does it help to line it with baking paper? Is it protective? What about baking paper itself (e.g., silicone-coated, vegetable-coated, etc.) — is it healthy? And speaking of silicone, what about silicone pans? And one more quest: the best challah pan… Any clue? Thank you so much for your excellent work! Baila Boosta RUCHY REESE RESPONDS: Thanks for writing in! I actually do find ceramic to be of the safer cooking options and specifically mentioned the brand Xtrema in my article as being hailed as the chief of ceramic cookware. Their products are pretty expensive, though. Ceramiccoated (aka enameled) cookware are generally also good, but this depends on what the ceramic is coating! Many companies advertise ceramic-coated products, but in reality, the inside of the pan is Teflon while only the area that touches the burner is ceramic-coated, causing that ceramic-coating to be worthless. Even when the ceramic is inside, make sure the coating is intact. Truthfully, I have less concerns about metals, even aluminum, than I do about Teflon. As for the Bialetti brand, according to my research, their line called “Terracotta Xtra” actually appears to feature no terracotta (aka clay) at all. It is only “terracotta-style,” according to a press release published before the line was launched. I’m assuming its non-stick coating is from the new line of Teflon, because it isn’t proclaimed PTFE-free (Teflon), or free of

PFAS (the family of chemicals that include C-8 and other suspected chemical compounds). As for real terracotta (clay) cookware, I’m also not jumping for joy. While it’s claimed to be “natural” and people have used it for thousands of years, it doesn’t take into the equation that our generation is estimated to be exposed to between 30 and 50 thousand chemicals that the previous generation was not. Many substances are absorbed into the soil through acid rain, factory runoff and other pollutants. Real terracotta cookware is reactive, meaning that it leeches back into the food, and who knows what harmful substances have been absorbed? Users have reported a clay aftertaste, muddy-looking food, and in some cases, generally feeling unwell after cooking in terracotta. Personally, I’d rather stick to glassware, ceramic-coated cast iron and stainless steel for cooking. (And yes, sometimes disposables, too! That’s for the mental/emotional component of health...) As for silicone and various parchment papers? Those are massive studies unto themselves. As of now, I have no information to share. The best challah pan? I’m once again leaning toward enameled cast iron, though I’ll admit I have yet to actually try it... They do say that Dutch ovens make awesome artisanal bread, so why not challah? Glass baking pans are also an option, though there seems to be a learning curve and experts recommend that oven temperature should be reduced by 25° when using glass. I hope this helps in your own quest for the perfect pot!

(Re: When Shabbos Waited for Me, Issue 173) A couple of weeks back you had a wonderful article outlining the heralding of a stress-free Shabbos. In just a few paragraphs, tips were given for competently preparing for Shabbos throughout the week instead of living within the confines of a hectic preShabbos pressure cooker. This article was followed by a scenario fresh out of exactly that kind of pressure cooker that one was so carefully advised against. Everything that could go wrong did go wrong, primarily because it seemed that an entire week’s worth of housework was crammed into several hours with a deadline that would not budge. And why was there naptime when Shabbos was at 6:36? Water running over the bathtub through the neighbor’s ceiling (supervision please!)? No soaked (checked?) beans? And what’s wrong with chicken from the chicken soup for a family of two adults and some little ones? And all of the laundry needed to washed, folded and ironed? Also, why was the husband actually disappearing with the children, only to return within a half-minute to licht tzinden? And how proper was it to deceive his wife until she tearfully accomplishes all the “mustdo’s”? Tatty should have used his cheerfulness to cheerfully place his kinderlach in the care of someone whose Erev Shabbos afternoon was serene, and then cheerfully assisted his wife in her attempt to beat the clock and attain a cheerful “sense of peace.” This attempt at hilarity

should have been placed as a precedent to the article on Shabbos prep for a calm Erev Shabbos, or omitted entirely as to me, it definitely does not sound like a realistic scenario. R.S.

ATTENTION DRIVERS I want to share a miracle and raise public awareness so that miracles of this kind are no longer needed. It happened this morning. An almost-five-year-old boy was waiting on the sidewalk for his bus. The bus arrived, put out its flashing stop sign — and a car on the opposite lane sped right through it. The bus driver beeped. Loud. Long. The car’s driver stopped, realizing what he’d done, and he began backing up toward the front of the bus — to where the mother had just let her little boy run into the road toward his bus. Yes, we yelled; the bus blasted. And yes, the driver of the car stopped backing and a very frightened boy made it safely to his bus. Chasdei Hashem. The issue was certainly a lack of awareness, because this happened on Ellish Parkway where there’s the old-style patch of grass in the middle of the road separating the right and left lanes. However, despite this patch of grass, Ellish Parkway is one road, and vehicles must honor stop signs from buses on the facing lane. As for the second important point, remember how absolutely important it is for drivers to honor bus stop signs. May we and our children merit Hashem’s protection when we go and when we come — and all the time in between. P.K.

Shemos By: Malka Schneps

SHIFRA’S* INFANT SON was critically ill, and her entire life revolved around his care and other issues relating to his illness. Whose turn was it to stay in the hospital? Who would watch their other two children? Would her son recover? One day Shifra was outside, and she could not understand why it was so very hot. Then she realized that it was summer! Shifra was so completely consumed by her son’s illness that even the passage of time had escaped her notice. There is a word we often hear in regard to challenging trials we face in life: consuming. One person might be consumed by grief, another might be consumed by debts, while another might be consumed by illness. When a person’s challenge is so great that it interferes with every aspect of their life, we call it “all-consuming.” Indeed, some nisyonos are so big that they dwarf every other concern. In this week’s parsha, Moshe Rabbeinu was tending his father-in-law’s sheep when he noticed “a thorn bush burning with fire, but the thorn bush was not being consumed” (Shemos 3:2). Moshe went to investigate the bush that burned yet did not become burned, and Hashem spoke to him from within the bush. One explanation given for this phenomenon is that Hashem was showing Moshe that although the Bnei Yisroel would suffer greatly, Hashem would ensure that they would not be destroyed. R’ Mordechai Gifter, zt”l, notes something unusual in the lashon. First, Moshe saw that “hasneh bo’eir ba’eish v’hasneh einenu uchal — the bush was burning with fire, but the bush was not being consumed.” Then Moshe asked, “...madua lo yivar hasneh — ...why does the thorn bush not burn?” Moshe did not ask why the bush was not being consumed, but why it was not burning — yet his previous observation had been that the bush was indeed burning, just not being consumed. What is the meaning of this apparent discrepancy? R’ Gifter explains that with the incident of the burning thorn bush, Hashem not only told Moshe

82 / THE MONSEY VIEW

that the Bnei Yisroel would not be destroyed in Mitzrayim — Hashem also revealed to Moshe all of the travails of the Bnei Yisroel in galus. The Bnei Yisroel would face many “burnings,” such as pogroms, expulsions, the Churban, etc., yet they would not be consumed. Moshe wondered how it was that the Bnei Yisroel could face so many “burnings” yet not be destroyed, and then he finally realized that no nation could withstand so much “burning” — it must be that it was not real burning, and the “bad” that would befall us would not really be “bad.” Although it would be painful to suffer through so many burnings, eventually we will be able to look back and see how it had been good for us. We would suffer tremendously as a nation, but it would ultimately be good. We are told the same about the suffering we endure in this world as individuals: After 120 years, when we come to the Olam Ha’emes, we will be able to look back at our lives and see that the suffering we experienced was ultimately for our own good. We are all familiar with the mashul of the father and son that addresses this issue. One day, a man’s horse ran away. The sympathetic neighbor expressed his sorrow over the man’s loss, but the man replied, “Gam zu l’tovah.” The next day, the horse returned, bringing a few wild horses with it. The same neighbor congratulated the man on his good fortune, but again the man replied, “Gam zu l’tovah.” The next day, the man’s son was trying to tame one of the wild horses when he fell and broke his leg. “I’m so sorry about your son,” the neighbor commiserated. But the man simply repeated, “Gam zu l’tovah.” The following day, soldiers arrived to take young men into the army, but the man’s son was spared because of his broken leg. “Gam zu l’tovah.” It can be so very hard to see the good in our suffering, but we must hold on to that glimmer of hope that someday we will see the good from it all. Hashem knows what He is doing, and He makes no mistakes. All we have to do is trust.

Hearings Held for Schools Facing $70K in Fines over Vaccination Records Hearings held last week gave schools an opportunity to plead their cases and reach settlements with the county over the $70,200 in cumulative fines issued for failure to provide the Rockland County Board of Health with student vaccination records in response to the recent measles epidemic. All but one of the nine schools had their fines reduced by 90 percent. According to The Journal News, thirty schools at the epicenter of the epidemic were required to provide the county with weekly reports of unvaccinated students as well as full lists of student vaccination dates, in addition to keeping unvaccinated or under-vaccinated children at home. Officials warned that failure to comply with the directive from the health department could result in fines of as much as $2,000 per day. The majority of schools complied with the requirements. Administrators of the school that had been facing a fine of $40,750, and was ultimately issued a mandatory fee of $24,750, told health commissioner Dr. Patricia Schnabel Ruppert that they did not realize the weekly reports needed to be sent after the incubation period

for measles at the school had ended. One administrator expressed frustration with the amount, saying that they had complied with the county’s requirements and that the one exception was the result of a misunderstanding, adding, “So how is this $25,000 going to stop this measles epidemic from spreading?” County attorney Tom Humbach noted that the fine was not the maximum allowed by law, and said that the amount had been reduced because, like all of the other institutions involved, the school had ultimately come into compliance with the county regulations. Humbach explained that the fines had been instituted to “deter others from ignoring the orders of the health commissioner.” More than 11,000 measles vaccinations were given in Rockland County since the outbreak began in October. As of December 21, the Department of Health reported 96 confirmed cases of measles in the county, and for the first time in weeks, no new suspected cases have been reported. Twelve confirmed cases of whooping cough have also been reported locally.

With Minimum State Standards Met, State Oversight No Longer Required for Ramapo Building and Fire Safety Department Improvements at the Ramapo Town Hall that have brought building and fire safety enforcement up to the state’s minimum standards have led to the elimination of a monitor brought in almost two years ago to ensure proper compliance. A state report issued on December 19 deemed the oversight unnecessary and recommended the termination of the agreement to appoint the monitor. “Currently, there does not appear to be a need to continue the activities of the Oversight Officer who was designated to oversee the Town’s activities relating to the administration and enforcement of the [fire and safety codes],” read the report. The decision has drawn protests from some, including firefighters and Assemblyman Kenneth Zebrowski, reported The Journal News. “I feel that an opportunity was missed

88 / THE MONSEY VIEW / December 26, 2018 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484

here because I envisioned a far more robust process with input from firefighters and the public,” said Zebrowski. The state-appointed monitor will continue overseeing the Spring Valley Building Department.

Chocolate Logs

94 / THE MONSEY VIEW

BY: ESTEE FRIEDMAN PHOTO CREDIT: IMAGEINATION BY FRIMET CHANA 845.558.6770 Decorative and classy, chocolate logs can be the perfect presentation from a kallah to a mechutenesta, be it for Purim or Tu B’Shvat (just decorate with some dried fruits!). The results are far more impressive than the work it requires; it really takes just a few simple steps. Both of the logs featured — one pareve and one milchig so you’re covered for any occasion — have a rich, quality taste, and

the secret lies in the premium ingredients used. With a little bit of skill, these recipes can also be adapted to create any flavor — caramel, halva or the taste of your choice. When decorating chocolate logs, there are no rules. Check out the cookie aisle, the chocolate section and the baking aisle for inspiration. It’s always nice, though, when the decoration on the outside hints at what the log contains.

THE MONSEY VIEW / 95

Praline Perfection

This chocolate log is rich and creamy with a delicious nut crunch. It’s a winner for every occasion.

96 / THE MONSEY VIEW

SUPPLIES NEEDED 9-inch silicone chocolate mold Double boiler

INGREDIENTS 2 T. peanut butter

1 lb. Shufra baking chocolate 1 bar Oppenheimer’s white baking chocolate 14 oz. praline paste 14 oz. nougat cream

½ cup crushed sugar cones (approximately 4 cones) 6 oz. coarsely chopped filberts (Egoz sells them ready)

TOPPING 2–3 oz. baking chocolate 1 sugar cone, broken into pieces Pardas chocolate caramel brittles, cut in half

DIRECTIONS 1. In an oven preheated to 350°, roast nuts in pan for about 15 minutes, watching that they shouldn’t burn. 2. In a double boiler, melt the first five ingredients. Once the mixture is melted, turn off the flame, add roasted nuts and crushed cones, and mix gently. 3. Place the mold on a sturdy pan or tray. Pour the chocolate mixture into the mold. Gently shake the mold to get air bubbles out. 4. Freeze for 4 hours. Remove from freezer and ease chocolate out of mold onto box or tray that you will transport it in. 5. To decorate, melt chocolate in a Ziploc bag and cut off the tip. Squeeze a narrow strip of melted chocolate across the length of the log, in the center. While wet, place pieces of sugar cone and caramel chocolate along the log. Drizzle melted chocolate on top for a finished look.

THE MONSEY VIEW / 97

Chocolate, Cheese and Cream This recipe takes the best of dairy, chocolate and crunch and combines it in one creamy bite. Filled with a cream cheese mixture, the taste is sublime, and you won’t wonder why it disappears in minutes. When a recipe calls for melting milchig chocolate, I opt for Shufra chocolate, since it is the most workable and tastes great. In total, you’ll need five bars of brown chocolate and six bars of white chocolate for this recipe.

SUPPLIES NEEDED 9-inch silicone chocolate mold Double boiler Piping bag with wide tip

INGREDIENTS 1 lb. Shufra white milk chocolate (a little less than 4½ bars) 1 lb. Shufra milk chocolate (a little less than 4½ bars) 14 oz. praline paste 6 oz. finely chopped filberts (Gold Nut sells them ready, take off some for topping)

CREAM CHEESE FILLING 1 bar (3.5 oz.) Shufra white milk chocolate 1 container whipped cream cheese ½ cup confectioners’ sugar

DIRECTIONS 1. Prepare filling first: Melt chocolate in double boiler. Combine cream cheese with confectioners’ sugar and add the melted chocolate. Mix well, but gently, and put mixture into piping bag fitted with a wide tip. Set aside. 2. In an oven preheated to 350°, roast nuts in pan for about 15 minutes, watching that they shouldn’t burn. 3. Melt first three ingredients of log in a double boiler. Once melted, turn off the flame and add most of the roasted nuts (leaving a bit over for the topping), mixing gently. 4. Place the mold on a sturdy pan or tray. Pour half of the chocolate mixture into the mold. Gently shake the mold to get air bubbles out. 5. Pipe the filling along the entire length of the log, in the center, making sure it doesn’t touch the sides. 6. Pour the rest of the chocolate into the mold to fill and shake mold gently to get air bubbles out. 7. Freeze for 4 hours. Remove from freezer and ease chocolate out of mold onto the surface you will transport it in. 8. To decorate, melt white and brown chocolate in two separate Ziploc bags and cut off the tips. Squeeze a narrow strip of brown chocolate across the length of the log, in the center. While wet, place chopped pieces of white and brown chocolate and roasted nuts, using more melted chocolate as glue as needed. Drizzle with both brown and white chocolate for a finished look.

The average kallah order contains four bath towels, six hand towels and a dozen or so assortment of dish towels.

Most kallahs take the timeless red dish towels for fleishig and about 50% chooses blue for milchig. The most popular dish towel color for pareve is black.

Shabbos tablecloths without liners are now a lot more popular than the ones that require liners.

Solid-colored tablecloths

are in for weekday — we see way less of designed and patterned varieties.

When it comes to bedding, down-alternative pillows are a lot more popular than downalternative blankets. Since those pillows are manufactured very well and are quite comfortable, many people choose not to spend a few times the price for real. The blankets that aren’t real down, though, weigh a lot more and are less breathable than down, making most customers opt for real down quilts.

weighs in on

Young couples will usually purchase basic couches in the $799–$999 range. Top quality isn’t a must, since nobody will be jumping on the couches just yet. Also, it’s not always worthwhile to invest in something much more costly at that point, since the couch might not work well in the next apartment.

Invitations should be mailed approximately four weeks prior to the wedding, and five weeks if return cards are included. The average family orders about

invitations, with numbers being on the rise. You will generally see larger orders in the chassidishe crowd.

Gold stamping on invitations has lately become very popular.

Our very largest order was for 3,000 wedding invitations. Since we specialize in high-end invitations, 95% of our customers order return cards. Two single cards are a lot more popular than folded cards. (This trend started because stamping two cards together costs less than stamping two sides of a folded card.) While white stock has been in for a while, off-white has never quite disappeared. In fact, it’s making a comeback, and we’ve begun seeing more of it.

The ideal number of personalized thank-you cards for a new couple to order is 300. It provides enough extra for future use, but not too much, as eventually the couple may want an updated style.

So much time, heart and effort goes into selecting jewelry for a kallah. However, choosing such a personal gift can be tricky, and situations can sometimes get sticky, as confirmed by those who bravely share their stories of jewelry mishaps.

Lost And Not Found About two years ago, Chumi Friedman realized that she lost the diamond from her engagement ring. “Besides for the shock, I was most definitely sad because of its symbolism,” notes Chumi. “We couldn’t afford a new stone then, so I told my husband that if he wanted to replace it, a CZ would be fine — and he went ahead and bought one for our 30th anniversary, along with a watch, which I was not expecting.”

Shaindy panicked when she woke up from her Shabbos nap as a kallah and noticed that a small diamond in her very expensive diamond ring was missing. “I didn’t know what to do, but I was instructed to call my in-laws-to-be and explain,” recalls Shaindy. “I was so nervous, but they took it well and sent me to their jeweler, and the diamond was replaced. It made me see the personalities of the people involved. They didn’t embarrass or criticize me over a stone; they were so understanding. It was a nice way to enter a family.”

Mothers-in-law can lose kallah jewelry too! Rochel* asked her mother-in-law if she could pick up her jewelry from the jeweler when she gave it in to clean for yom tov. Although her mother-in-law remembered seeing a third ring on the counter when she went to pick it up, Rochel’s beautiful diamond engagement ring was somehow left behind, never to be found. “It was upsetting to lose something so special and expensive,” admits Rochel, “but another part of me just couldn’t get so worked up over a material item. Clearly, for whatever reason, it was supposed to happen. Baruch Hashem, it was just a ring that I lost and not, chas v’shalom, someone I love.”

The Ol’ Razzle Dazzle When Toby’s diamond ring was stolen, she didn’t have the heart to tell her mother-inlaw. “I just decided to tell told her that I chose to change the setting, and I put a fake diamond in. I’m glad that she is none the wiser,” says Toby.

122 / THE MONSEY VIEW / December 26, 2018 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484

Another switcheroo story did not have a happy ending, but it was clearly gam zu l’tovah. Bracha* had her heart set on a low, marquisshaped cut diamond in yellow gold — something tasteful, modest, pretty and understated. Both her father and father-in-law-to-be were in the jewelry business, and while each offered to make her the engagement ring design she had chosen, her father-in-law won out. “When I was presented with the ring, I was stunned, dumbfounded and horrified,” says Bracha. “Although the diamond was beautiful, I had never seen a ring so hideous and gaudy. The stone was set in a handcoiled platinum shank, surrounded by oddly cut smaller diamonds and built up so high it looked like the Eiffel Tower. It was not even a glimmer of what I had asked for!” Bracha continues, “It hurt me so much that although they asked for

Gam zu l’tovah — it helped me pay for my son’s wedding. And when my sons got engaged, we always made sure to listen carefully to their kallahs’ ring preferences.”

Borderline Diamonds Three months before his chasunah, Moshe* and his family drove to Montreal. When asked at the border why they were traveling to Canada, Moshe replied he was getting engaged that night, and the officials started looking for valuable taxable items. The fact that each family member had a driver’s license from a different state also piqued their interest. The family was flagged and asked to wait outside in the freezing cold while the Canadian border officials tore their car and luggage apart. “They couldn’t find anything but the empty bracelet wrapper, since I had already given my kallah the diamond bracelet,” shares Moshe. “They asked me what had come in the wrapper and then asked my mother how much the bracelet was worth — it was about $1,100. They let us go in the end but put me and the incident on file.” A month before the chasunah, Moshe drove to Montreal from New York. At the border, they flagged him down and asked if they had anything to declare. Long story short, after he was forced to admit that he had the bracelets this time around, the officials searched the car and confiscated his kallah’s bracelet. Despite the fact that she had NEXUS membership, they revoked it for “smuggling” jewelry across the border, upping the $700 fine to $1,000! Moshe paid it so he could get the bracelet back, but he is appealing the charge.

Faux Pearls Faux Pas Dina* was once at a wedding when, during the dancing, pearls suddenly flew all over the dance floor. Apparently, the kallah had been given a strand of pearls of inferior quality in the yichud room. “The kallah’s friends and family immediately began scurrying about the hall to retrieve the stray pearls,” recalls Dina. “The chasan’s family didn’t realize what happened, and the kallah’s parents got her something very similar the following day.”

An Attitude of Gratitude Is Good As Gold! Devorah adds, “We suceeded to inculcate in our children that nobody deserves anything in this world. You may marry into a family with financial struggles, and for them giving a CZ is like giving a diamond for another. Jewelry is a gift, and a gift is something you are grateful for because it is given from the heart and nobody owes it to you.”

During shanah rishonah, a pearl from a pair of drop earrings that Ahuvah received as a kallah gave her also went flying onto a chasunah dance floor while she was dancing. “I didn’t want my husband to feel bad, so I replaced them without his knowing,” divulges Ahuva.

After Raizy Adler was married for a few years, her husband surprised her with a 10-strand freshwater pearl necklace. “My face fell when I opened the box; it wasn’t what I wanted,” reminisces Raizy. “He asked me if I liked it. Of course, I said yes, but added, ‘Don’t they have the larger single pearls with one strand?’ I hurt him so badly that he never felt confident buying a piece of jewelry for me again. Ever since then, before yom tov, he tells me to get a piece of jewelry and that it will make him happy. “If I could redo that day, I would turn the clock back in a heartbeat, but you learn from your mistakes and life goes on,” says Raizy. “Now I know that even if you are not crazy about something, in some situations you’ve got to fake it and wear it — and always appreciate, above all, the thought and the feelings that go into the gift. Unless you really hate it, wear the gift at least a few times and always say how much you like it and appreciate it!”

Miri always dreamed of the setting she would choose for her diamond ring. She doesn’t like anything too typical and usually goes for a “different” look. “I was only mildly disappointed when I didn’t get to choose any of my gifts and received the most classic and typical of everything,” admits Miri. “I say ‘mildly’ because I didn’t feel worthy of having all these gifts given to me at all! I felt humbled and appreciative to my in-laws for everything.”

Besides for being the oldest in her family, Rivka G. was first in her class to get engaged. “I had zero expectations — I had no idea that a kallah even got jewelry and that it was the norm,” admits Rivka. “When a bracelet arrived a few days after the engagement on erev yom tov, I thought my mother-in-law was the nicest person in the world — it was so unexpected. This just goes to show how much more we enjoy things when we appreciate them rather than expect them. “Besides,” concludes Rivka, “the most precious gift of all is their son! What do we need more than a wonderful chasan?”

A few months after my friend Shani got married, she invited me, along with a few other girls, to her apartment. We were getting together to plan a class reunion, but of course, we spent much of the time admiring her new home. Shani’s mother is an experienced interior designer, and although not fancy, the small apartment was beautifully decorated. The furniture was simple, yet chic, and the space was cozy and inviting.

130 / THE MONSEY VIEW / December 26, 2018 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484

hroughout the tour, there was something niggling at the back of my mind, but it was only once I got home that I was able to put my finger on what it was. Why did Shani have so much stuff? She was married all of five months and did not yet have any kids, so how did she accumulate so many things? I went through the rooms of her apartment in my mind and pictured the shelves with the little knickknacks, the full breakfront and the cabinets that were already overflowing. How could Shani expect to keep her house organized when she started off completely on the wrong foot? Setting up an entire apartment for a new kallah is quite a job. Many mothers get overwhelmed just thinking of all of the shopping that must be done during the engagement. Aside from the strain on the budget and the tremendous outlay of time, the sheer amount of items that one has to purchase is incredible. Whether the engagement is eight weeks or eight months long, people are always rushing until the very last minute and the tasks seem neverending. Many people with experience in this area, and even local housewares stores, have put together a list of everything the new couple will need to start off their married lives. These lists, however, are just a suggestion; many of the items on these lists are completely superfluous. A waffle maker, for example, is not an item that most kallahs will use anytime in the near future. Feeling swamped by the gargantuan to-do list, many of us fall into the trap of overbuying rather than narrowing down the list to actual necessities. Taking the extra step of sifting through the list will save time and money and will ultimately prove extremely helpful to the new couple as they won’t be inundated with unnecessary things. When a home is set up with too many extras (which very fast turns into clutter), it is very difficult for a young girl, new to housekeeping, to stay organized. Starting off in the right environment is key to building the proper skills necessary to maintain a well-run home.

Begin by sitting down with the list from a housewares store. Together with the kallah, mark the items that are necessities. Once this is done, return to the top of the list and mark the items that would be nice to have. The remaining things should be crossed off completely. Keep in mind this kallah’s individual needs. If she loves to cook, her list will look very different than the girl who considers grilled cheese a gourmet dish. People seem to think that the stores will all be closing after the wedding. If you made the wrong decision and neglected to buy an item that the couple ends up needing, it can always be purchased at a later date. This scenario is far better than buying things “just in case” and acquiring a slew of items that are never taken out of the closet. Regardless of how long the engagement is, start the shopping right away. Furniture and anything that is space- or colordependent can only be chosen once you have decided on an apartment. All other items, however, can be purchased and stored in your house until the apartment is ready. Many stores offer toiveling services for large purchases; make sure you take them up on it. It is worthwhile to spend a little extra and purchase everything in one store — and have it all toiveled at the same time — rather than shopping around for cheaper prices and ending up toiveling on your own. It is a much bigger job than you think. And as soon as your purchases are delivered, wash and repack them and then store them in a safe place until you are able to set up the apartment. Once you have found a place for the new couple to live, you can choose the furniture and any items you left for this point. Don’t push off ordering the furniture as it can take a few weeks to arrive and you don’t want the couple to be stuck without it! If they will be renting, ask the landlord how soon you can move things in. Then you can start setting up the apartment. Start with the bathroom, kitchen and linen closet, as these are spaces with built-in storage and are not reliant on fur-

niture being delivered. In addition to the cookware and dishes, you should also fill the kitchen with non-perishable food items, such as spices, coffee and sugar. Things like aluminum foil and Ziploc bags should also be stocked now, as well as cleaning supplies like Windex, garbage bags, dish soap and sponges. It is a very important to make sure the cabinets are organized correctly. Don’t assume the setup will be adjusted later — it probably will not. Spend the extra time planning the layout and ensuring it is done properly, and when you set up the apartment with the kallah, explain to her the logic behind the setup so she knows the logic behind it. This will help her keep her home organized properly as it gets busier and they start to accumulate more things. Each time someone makes a trip to the apartment, have them take along some personal belongings that are no longer needed at home. This job is much easier if you do it a little bit at a time. It will also make moving in much less stressful since there won’t be much unpacking to do. If the couple will be staying there during sheva brachos, having all the clothing and shoes the kallah will be

wearing that week prepared in the closet is a big time-saver. Upon delivery of the furniture, set them up and fill the bookshelves and dressers. Go through the apartment to make sure there are no missing essentials, but remember not to confuse essentials with luxuries. Don’t fall prey to the notion that you need to fill every empty shelf or drawer. It is actually very important to start off with extra space. Every couple receives presents and buys new things after their marriage, and if there is no place to put them, the apartment will very quickly become cluttered and messy. Stick to the must-haves and keep in mind that you are starting your daughter off in this new stage of life — and providing her with the tools to sustain her beautifully organized apartment may be almost as important as filling the apartment itself. It sounds idyllic — get paid to shop for others, using their money. A dream come true, right? For those of us who hate shopping, wouldn’t it be great to outsource the job to someone else? Is hiring a personal shopper an unnecessary luxury? Or is it just good sense to avail yourself of a professional, someone who knows what they’re doing? And what’s it like to be a personal shopper? We spoke to Mrs. Chana Steinmetz*, a personal shopper with clients from across the frum spectrum, to get a glimpse into the world of personal shopping and discover how a personal shopper can help us navigate the busy shopping season that precedes a simcha.

138 / THE MONSEY VIEW / December 26, 2018 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484

AS SOMEONE WHO ENJOYS COLOR AND DESIGN, MRS. Steinmetz took pleasure in the shopping when she married off her daughter seven years ago, but she realized it entailed a lot of work. She had always been artsy (she designed her parents’ bathroom tiles at the age of 13 when her parents renovated their house!), and says, “Many people with my skill choose to become interior designers, but when my youngest child went to school and I was looking for something to keep busy with, I chose personal shopping because it was a niche that wasn’t being filled. I was already doing the shopping for family and friends, so I decided to turn my hobby into a business.” Her clients aren’t only kallahs or young women. Older women in their 60s and 70s turn to her for advice when they want to look young, yet don’t want to wear the same clothes as their daughters and granddaughters. She’s often consulted by women with difficult-to-fit figures for her expertise in making them look as good as possible. She does the legwork, helps them find clothes that flatter them, and gives her honest opinion, so they feel confident that they have the clothes they need to look their best. In addition to an eye for fashion and fit, and a knack for putting clothing together, one of Mrs. Steinmetz’s strengths is her ability to make quick decisions. She recalls one client, a single young lady with a distinguished profession who had no fashion ability to speak of. “She needed to look good for her job and for shidduchim but had zero taste in clothing and would agonize in the store for hours,” says Mrs. Steinmetz. “We pulled together a wardrobe for her with smart, useful

pieces and coordinating accessories, and now she looks great!” Aside from shopping with the mother of a chasan for her own wardrobe for the wedding and sheva brachos, Mrs. Steinmetz’s shopping skills come in handy when shopping for kallah gifts. “Some kallahs appreciate a few expensive pieces, while others prefer lots of jewelry, even if each item is a bit cheaper. I get to know the boy’s mother, her budget, and a little bit about their kallah, and then advise them on how to spend their money wisely.” Mrs. Steinmetz doesn’t just shop with kallahs and their mothers in stores; by now she has her own seamstresses who create her original designs and sketches and turn them into a wearable work of art. Sometimes the client herself has a dream gown in mind, and together, they’ll turn it into a reality. Some of her clients don’t even live nearby! Many of them are from overseas, where there aren’t as many stores with tznius’dig options, and if they’re making a simcha in the United States, they’ll choose to work with Mrs. Steinmetz to get everything they need for the simcha. Many of Mrs. Steinmetz’s clients know exactly what they need, and just want her help to find it while saving lots of time. Others, especially those making their first simcha, are overwhelmed at the thought of all they have to purchase, and Mrs. Stein-

metz sits with them and goes through a list of what they need and how much of everything is really necessary. It’s not just dresses; she’ll take care of shoes, kerchiefs, belts, pocketbooks and accessories. She even accompanies some kallahs to their sheitel appointments and bridal headpiece fittings! No two clients are alike, and Mrs. Steinmetz works with each one’s individual taste and budget. She once had a set of identical twins whom she outfitted for a simcha. “One thought a dress was gorgeous, while the other hated it,” she says. “Each client is an individual, and I take their feelings and

wishes into account.” While Mrs. Steinmetz aims to please her clients and help them find clothing they like, there are certain lines she won’t cross, even if it means losing business. When clients want her to buy clothing that isn’t tznius’dig, she’ll immediately advise them to go elsewhere. Her goal is to make each client look and feel like a princess, but not at the expense of halacha and hashkafah. To keep prices reasonable and

to give her clients the widest range of options, Mrs. Steinmetz charges by the hour, as opposed to taking a percentage. She feels it gives her the most flexibility because then she’s not committed to one type of store

or a particular price range. “Whether the dress costs $1,000 or $10,000, the customer is paying for my time, my k no w-ho w and my expertise. I don’t want my customers to be tied to a particular price range or minimum amount,” she explains. Another trait that comes in handy is excellent people skills. Navigating a tricky mother-daughter relationship during an exciting yet stressful time isn’t for the faint of heart, and sometimes Mrs. Steinmetz has to summon up her inner therapist and remain very patient. “During an engagement, people can feel nervous or vulnerable, and it’s up to me to make sure the kallah and her mother are calm and relaxed, and not unduly stressed by the preparations,” she says. Mrs. Steinmetz knows that she carries a big responsibility that goes way beyond clothing. When one kallah, who had been estranged from her mother for many years, consulted with her during her engagement shopping, Mrs. Steinmetz went the extra mile and guided her to keep perspective and invite her mother to the wedding, despite the pain in their relationship. Today,

this young woman and her mother keep in touch, and her children are enjoying a relationship with their grandmother. Another kallah was very unhappy during her engagement, fearing she’d made the wrong decision regarding her shidduch. Mrs. Steinmetz encouraged her every day, during and between fittings and shopping trips, to focus on what really matters. “She’s happily married for a few years now, with several children, and she still calls me every year on her anniversary to thank me for saving her shidduch and encouraging her to go through with the wedding,” says Mrs. Steinmetz. “What’s most satisfying,” she remarks, “is that I’m always involved in simchos. It’s a happy job! Most of my clients become my good friends, and I continue to share in their joyous moments.” *Name changed

The night before my wedding, tension reigned. My mother and I had tried to have everything ready in advance so that this night should be dedicated to preparing myself spiritually and emotionally for my big day. My apartment was all set up — the kitchen tiles gleamed, the linen dared not show a crease, and the closet hangers were all exactly an inch apart. Perfection. We had also created lists for everything, including a sheva brachos dress guide. We had put together a complete schedule of exactly what I’d be wearing on each night to avoid the unnecessary stress of standing in front of a wide-open closet, undecided, with an even more confused brand-new husband in tow. Though the whole system worked out quite well, one significant detail was still missing: The dress I would be wearing to my mother-in-law’s sheva brachos was still on its way from overseas — we’d custom-ordered it from a skilled seamstress on a recent trip to Europe. We had ordered something beautiful and unique, and we’d expected it to be shipped to us way earlier, but the seamstress suffered from a severe case of procrastination. As my wedding date drew nearer, with no dress in sight, we began to put more pressure on the seamstress. At this point, though, we’d need expedited international shipping, which would be very costly, so she promised us that she’d ship it to one of my siblings who lived close to her, who would bring it to the wedding. Soon, our out-of-town siblings and relatives began showing up at our door — we had invited them for an early dinner at my parents’ home so we’d all get a chance to meet and greet each other before the whirlwind of activity would begin on the following day. When the welcome hugs and cries of “Oh, how much the children have grown!” subsided, my brother lugged in the suitcase containing my dress. He extracted the garment bag and handed it to me with a flourish, excited to be the good shaliach. I opened the zipper with exhilaration, and indeed, the dress was breathtaking. And... not my size. The beautiful and unique custom-ordered dress was large enough to be wrapped around my petite frame four times. It was Wednesday night. My wedding would be the following day. Friday was going to be the shortest Erev Shabbos of the year — and my mother-in-law’s sheva brachos was scheduled for Sunday. There I was, standing in my dress, and all of a sudden, wedding flutters kicked

USUALLY, WHEN A close cousin is marrying off a child, I try to participate fully. In addition to sharing in the simcha, I enjoy socializing with my siblings and my cousins, and meeting friends and acquaintances. One night last week, however, I had three close family weddings to attend. While they all took place in the same neighborhood (which meant I was spared spending time on the highway), I did have to divide my night between the three simchos. At each wedding, I wished mazel tov to all mechutanistes, met a few acquaintances I was happy to see, and then left to go to the next wedding. So the night passed, with my attending all weddings, but not being fully present at any. As I got into the car after leaving the third simcha, I remarked to my husband that although I did not really enjoy myself at any one wedding, the night still meant a lot to me; in our family alone, three couples were building new Yiddishe homes, and a Yiddishe simcha was being celebrated in each of the other local wedding halls, as well. Wasn’t this the best revenge against Hitler, ym”sh? Think about it. Most of these chasanim and kallahs were descendants of people who survived the Holocaust in one way or another. One spent the war years in concentration camps, returning with a number etched into an arm; another suffered deep in Siberia; and a third was hidden in an attic or cellar for the duration of the war. Each survivor has their own tale to tell of how they outlived the enemy. But despite all that, they picked themselves up and rebuilt their families. Now look at how, with each

Yiddishe wedding, the golden chain is being fortified. My mother, a”h, once told me that in her early years in America (in the early 1950s) she once called an aunt on Motzei Simchas Torah to wish her a good year. Her aunt asked her, “Hust du epes a chasunah dem vinter?” Do you have any wedding to attend this winter? Contrast that to today’s proliferation, bli ayin hora, of Yiddishe simchos. So when the mailman delivers another few wedding invitations, open them with joy and anticipation. Think about how little girls, all dolled up in their finest, revel at chasunahs. They are genuinely thrilled to have been invited and make the most of their chance to dance, run around and enjoy themselves with their siblings and cousins. Let them inspire us as to how to accept an invitation. And if, for some reason, you can’t attend a simcha, pick up a pen and paper (what’s that?) or a phone, and wish the family a hearty mazel tov. At my son’s aufruf, I was sitting next to my mother, a”h. The children, as children are wont to do, were running around and making a bit of noise. It annoyed one of the guests, who expressed her dissatisfaction as to how today’s children are raised. My mother, in her inimitable way, told this woman that during the war, when she was working in the gold mines in Siberia, she did not dream that she would ever get out of there, let alone get married and raise a family — and that one day she would be sitting at her own grandson’s aufruf. In those days, one dreamed of a piece of bread to still the gnawing hunger, a warm coat to protect oneself against the bitter cold, and a bit of rest from the backbreaking work. To her, every smile, every expression of delight from a child is extremely heartwarming. May Hashem bless us all with many simchos, and may the only reason for not attending someone’s simcha be another conflicting simcha, and may we all merit to join the ultimate simcha with Moshiach Tzidkeinu speedily in our days.

HILCHOS BORER | PART 3

We mentioned in previous articles that when faced with a mixture of two different types of foods or items, or a mixture of ochel (food) with pesoles (garbage),1 one can avoid issues of borer by following three conditions: 1) take the thing that one wants to eat or use at that time from that which one doesn’t want; 2) take it immediately before eating or using; and 3) use one’s hands and not a kli that helps in the separation process.2 The mutar way to deal with a mixture Borer is the separation of ochel and pesoles, so by not separating the two, one can get around all the conditions. But if we don’t separate them — how will it help?! One way to get around the conditions of taking ochel from pesoles and eating the ochel immediately is by removing the part of the ochel that is mixed with pesoles along with the pesoles.3 This is very useful because often the pesoles is not mixed with the entire ochel, but rather only with a part of it. By taking away the pesoles along with the part of ochel that it is mixed with, one is avoiding borer because one is not separating pesoles from ochel.4 Therefore, after doing so, one does not even have to abide by eating it immediately since he didn’t separate ochel from pesoles, but rather only ochel from ochel!

Since this idea is somewhat abstract, let’s illustrate with some examples. Partially Rotten Apple Mommy is cutting an apple for Sruly and sees a section that is rotten to the extent that she knows Sruly wouldn’t eat it (or would only eat it in extenuating circumstances). She can’t just cut off the rotten part because that would be taking pesoles from ochel. Instead, she should take off a significant layer of the not spoiled apple that seems to the naked eye as being mixed with the rotten part. Since the whole apple is not considered mixed with the bad part, but only the area around it that seems to the naked eye as mixed, one is essentially not separating ochel and pesoles. Therefore, Mommy can do this now even if Sruly wants to eat the apple at a later time.

1 See Taz 319:12; Shulchan Aruch HaRav 319:8; Mishnah Berurah 319:15; not like the Ohr Sameach, Shabbos 8:11, who holds there is no borer by keilim. 2 Shulchan Aruch 319:1; See Shulchan Aruch HaRav 319:1 who explains that these three conditions constitute derech achilah, and therefore it is mutar.

According to the Mishnah Berurah’s (319:55, 62) understanding of the Taz, one is allowed to take a bit of ochel along with the pesoles, but according to the Chazon Ish (Orach Chaim siman 53), one must take all the ochel that is mixed with the pesoles. The halacha written above is according to the more machmir opinion of the Chazon Ish.

3

See Magen Avraham 319:5. When he would eat it in extenuating circumstances then it is an issur d’rabbanan, while if he wouldn’t eat it at all it is assur min haTorah.

4

5 See Shemiras Shabbos K’hilchasah perek 3 footnote 56 who says in the name of Rav Shlomo Zalman Auerbach, zt”l, that this is not similar to the halacha of peels, because one can get to the food without removing the sticker. See the footnote there where it brings Orchos Chaim 319:2 who is meikel when one does it immediately before eating like the halacha of peels. See also there for another reason to be meikel. However, since there are prominent poskim (see Ayil Meshulash) who assur it and it is a shailah of an issur d’Oraisa, one should abide by the opinions who are machmir.

156 / THE MONSEY VIEW / December 26, 2018 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484

Pit Inside Salad Similarly, when finicky Leah finds a lemon pit in her salad, she would be allowed to take out the pit along with all the surrounding salad that looks to the eye as mixed with the pit. This way she is not separating pesoles from ochel since the pit is only considered mixed with some of the salad that is around it, and not the entire salad in the bowl. In this case, too, one does not have to eat the rest of the salad immediately, since no separation of ochel and pesoles was done. Sticker on Challah And we see this idea again when there is a sticker on challah. One would be allowed to

take off the sticker along with a significant layer of the challah that it is stuck to so that it is not considered taking pesoles from ochel, but rather ochel from ochel, since the sticker, which is the pesoles, is not mixed with the entire challah but only with the place it is stuck to. Here, too, one would not have to eat it immediately since one did not separate any pesoles from ochel.5 In all the cases above there is no reason to throw out the good food along with the pesoles. The good part that was taken away along with the pesoles in all the examples above can still be eaten by taking the good part from the bad to be eaten immediately. Alternative Option It is worth noting that in the cases of the rotten apple, the lemon pit in the salad and the sticker on the challah, one would be allowed to take the good part of the apple from the bad, the rest of the salad from the pit, and the challah from the sticker (i.e., by pulling the challah away from the sticker and not the other way around), even without leaving any of the good part behind, because this is abiding by the rule of taking ochel from pesoles. However, in such cases, one would also have to eat it immediately since one separated the ochel from the pesoles. The purpose of this column is to bring awareness to matters of halacha. As with any halacha-related questions, consult your rav for a psak.

By: Hadassah Steinman

Known as the Queen of Gems, pearls have that timeless beauty and never go out of style. Although classified as a gemstone, a pearl is the only gem that is not a stone, but a treasure culled from a living creature.

Until the twentieth century, only the royal and very wealthy typically owned pearls. At that point, pearls came only from the wild, and the demand for pearls far outweighed the supply — especially when the pearl gained popularity to the point that overfishing depleted the naturally occurring oyster beds in the seas. This all changed when Japanese Mikimoto Kokichi developed a way to create a cultured pearl. By the time he filed for a patent in 1896, he’d already been working toward that goal for almost two decades. It would take more than another decade for his pearls to be indistinguishable from the natural pearl, and another few years until the enterprise brought him any profits. In 1927, Thomas Edison met with Mikimoto and was highly impressed at what the latter managed to create since he’d believed cultivating pearls was “supposed to be biologically impossible.” Mikimoto’s discovery had a tremendous impact on the pearl industry. The pearls he cultivated — versus natural pearls found in the seas — were more readily available, cheaper to harvest and thus cheaper to purchase, and resulted in perfectly round pearls. Today, about 99 percent of pearls purchased are cultured.

WHAT IS A CULTURED PEARL? Pearls, both natural and cultured, are created when oysters or mussels cover an irritant that has made its way into its soft tissue muscle, by layers and layers of secretion known as nacre. In natural pearls, this irritant occurs accidentally, such as when a parasite enters the shell. In cultured pearls, on the other hand, pearl farmers insert an irritant into the oyster’s or mussel’s soft tissue to encourage the same secretion process. To cultivate saltwater pearls — which are created by oysters farmed in oceans — the irritant inserted into the oysters is a bead made from another oyster’s shell. To cultivate freshwater pearls — created by mussels in rivers and lakes — a pearl farmer inserts tissue from another mussel into the farmed mussel as the irritant. Saltwater pearls are more expensive than freshwater pearls since they take much longer to cultivate — think years rather than months. Also, a saltwater oyster will produce only one to three pearls at a time in contrast to larger freshwater mussels that can produce pearls numbering in the dozens, all at one time. Saltwater pearls are also often preferred for their more striking luster and perfectly round shape. 158 / THE MONSEY VIEW / December 26, 2018 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484

PEARLS OF CLASS

THE PEARL OF GREAT FAME

Since pearls were such rare finds in centuries past, in Ancient Rome, Julius Caesar allowed only those in the ruling class to wear pearls!

The most famous pearl in the world, known as Le Peregrina (“The Incomparable” in Spanish), has a history that has spanned centuries. This pear-shaped pearl is the size of an egg and was discovered near Panama nearly 500 years ago by an African slave who was soon thereafter rewarded with freedom. The pearl was given to future Philip II of Spain, and was then enjoyed by royalty from England, France and Austria who were tied by marriage to Spanish royalty. Eventually, it passed from one owner to the next, including a brother and then a nephew of Napoleon Bonaparte. Most recently, in 2011, Le Peregrina was set in a necklace and sold at Christie’s in New York for a whopping $10.5 million, before fees.

THE PEARLS OF BARTER Pierre Cartier, of Cartier’s jewelry and watchmaking fame, got his hands on their New York Fifth Avenue flagship location by purchasing the mansion from a wealthy couple. The price? A pearl necklace they had their eyes on — and an additional $100.

THE $100 MILLION PEARL Approximately 12 years ago, the largest and most expensive pearl in the world was discovered by a Filipino fisherman inside a giant clam — which is a rare occurrence in itself. This pearl, measuring 26 inches long and 12 inches wide, weighs about 75 pounds and is valued at an astronomical $100 million!

THE REAL DEAL? Here are a few ways to make sure your pearl is indeed the real thing, and not a fake: 1.

Authentic pearls are not perfectly round; their shape usually has minor imperfections that can be found when examined closely.

2.

A pearl usually has a nice luster. Too dull or too shiny? It’s probably fake.

3.

You should be able to feel a real pearl’s weight when it rests in your palm. Fake pearls will feel much lighter.

4.

While real pearls are cool to the touch at first, fake pearls remain at room temperature, whether they’re being worn or not.

5.

Rub the pearl gently over the front of your teeth. Real pearls will feel a bit rough since their surface is most likely not perfectly smooth.
