HOW TO
CHOOSE YOUR CATSKILL VACATION HOME The
Shul
The
With various projects currently under construction in the Catskills, how does a family choose the right home - in the right development - and not experience buyer’s remorse in the future? For the chassideshe family living in the metro NY area, MOUNTAIN ACRES is the only sensible choice – for many good and compelling reasons. Please consider the following in its totality:
T H E P R OJ E CT The facilities and amenities of MOUNTAIN ACRES are in a class of their own. There will be a grand shul (under construction) with a mikveh and day camp facilities, two large outdoor pools with kiddie pools, a magnificent all-year indoor pool with a health gym and spa, all built on an intelligently designed site plan with most trees saved - and commensurate with our previous unique and beautiful projects in the Catskills, including; Alpine Acres, Lake Forest Estates, Twin Oaks Village, Laurel Ledge Villas, Evergreen Estates, Regency Estates, Luxor Estates, Vacation Village, Elm Shade Estates, Willow Woods, Woodlake Village, and Woodridge Estates.
MOUNTAIN ACRES is located in scenic and quiet Mountaindale (part of the Town of Fallsburg), and shares the same altitude and “air” as Woodridge which is less than a mile away. It is a shorter ride from the City (exit 112), especially in the summer when one can avoid the annoying traffic bottlenecks of Route 42, both in Fallsburg and in Monticello. MOUNTAIN ACRES is adjacent to the yeshiva of Mountaindale (year-round minyan) and to a beautiful walking trail which leads directly to the Center 1 kosher shopping mall in Woodridge. MOUNTAIN ACRES is one of very few projects offering homes which are stick-built - not cookie-cutter modulars or double wide-trailers. And it is the ONLY project where over 90% of its homes will be fully detached! MOUNTAIN ACRES offers its clientele – if they want to - the ability to customize any of nine different models being offered so they will not have to settle for any imposed builder's standards. The homes range from 3-8 bedrooms, 2-6 bathrooms, 1-3 stories, with many customizable floorplans designed to suit any family’s needs or budgets.
Houses
in
progress
One does not need to be rich to buy a home at MOUNTAIN ACRES. Our semi-attached duplex home, 1348 sq. ft. with 3 bedrooms, 9' ceiling, and 2 ½ baths sells for $179,900. But for just $205,900 you can have that same home built on an unfinished basement, with room for future expansion to 5 bedrooms with 3 ½ baths! Our eight other models are all fully detached and begin at $279,900. Financing available. (Taxes will be similar to comparably sized homes in other projects in Fallsburg with municipal water and sewer; maintenance projected at approximately $3500 per house.) Does buying a lesser home in a lesser project really make sense? When comparing apples to apples, we have the only tree!
MOUNTAIN ACRES is currently under construction and is scheduled to open for this coming season I”YH. Compare carefully and you too will soon be calling us to join our expanding heimische olam who certainly won’t be experiencing any buyer’s remorse after they move in! It's not too late for this year if you act now. Call Nachman at 845-434-2600 (nachmank@gmail.com) or Ephraim (w89stern@gmail.com). Offering by prospectus only.

(Re: On a Guilt Trip, Issue 180) Thank you, Dr. Sora Yaroslawitz, for your keen perspective on child rearing. I especially enjoyed the tip to think of our children’s chinuch as a “million-dollar investment.” Framing it this way allows me to feel positive, committed, and able to devote myself unconditionally. (Inbox, Issue 181) I appreciate your response to the letter regarding the Yiddish comics. The writer seemed to be of the opinion that publishing a Yiddish comic following a long-running English comic was discriminatory toward Litvishe readers. While the Litvish community is dominantly English-speaking now, there are Litvishe children in the community being educated in Yiddish who will enjoy Yiddish-language comics, despite speaking English at home. There is no contradiction in being both Litvish and Yiddish-literate. Also, discrimination, for the most part, is perpetrated by powerful groups on less powerful groups. English is perhaps the most powerful language in the world, let alone our community. For an English comic series to cede room for an occasional Yiddish comic is hardly discriminatory. A Reader

I don’t want to get into whether the comic is for the Litvish or chassidish community. I know Litvaks who speak Yiddish and chassidim who don’t. What the issue comes down to is consideration for the different segments of the community. In general, all Yiddish-speaking households have someone in the household who is also an English speaker, but the reverse is not gener-

ally the case. Many, if not most, of the English-speaking households are exclusively English-speaking; therefore it is impossible for them to share in the Yiddish comic. I agree that each constituency should have a comic in their native tongue as it encourages our children to keep reading kosher material in addition to their learning. An option might be to use a footnote for each speech bubble. The footnote could then provide the translation for the non-presenting language. This way everyone could enjoy the comic and each constituency could have their time as the featured language in the comic. Thank you for this consideration, Looking for Achdus P.S. On the same theme, it would really be nice if the picture section had bilingual captions. For nonYiddish speakers and non-chassidim, it is often too difficult to translate the frequently unfamiliar names of the various chassiduses and visiting Rebbes. With captions in both languages, bridges can be built. Thank you.
To the writer of the letter who voiced her disappointment in regard to the Yiddish comic: You mentioned that you are Litvish, and as such, feel discriminated against when a feature appears in Yiddish. But in pre-war Lithuania, the kinderlach all spoke and read Yiddish. What a wonderful opportunity you have to teach your child the mamme lashon now that it’s being provided in such an exciting format, even with nekudos! Give your child the gift of being literate in Yiddish — the gift of his Litvish heritage. A Jew Like You

(Re: Your Voice, Issue 180; Inbox, Issue 181) In regard to the letters about pay for cleaning help, I want to relate a story.
My cleaning lady once had letters translated into Yiddish so that she could share it with her other Jewish bosses. The letters were heartbreaking. Basically, she said she was quitting because she could not stand to be treated like a thief all day. She declared that she had never stolen anything from anyone, and despite this, she was being watched over all day with suspicion. She said it was simply unbearable to be treated in such a way. I know she is not the only one with such an experience, but unlike her, many cannot afford to quit. While theft does happen, it does not follow that all cleaning ladies should be treated like thieves. I was taught that you don’t call a child a ganev because he might grow up to be one. Taking time to find the right cleaning lady and showing her that you trust her and are also paying a fair wage can go a long way for both her and your peace of mind. If you cannot afford to pay the price, either in money or respect, don’t expect to get the services you are looking for. A Respectful Boss
It is quite obvious that last week’s letter-writer is not struggling with money, and therefore can’t understand this difficulty. Who spends extra money on toys, bagels and clothing? In our home, toys are purchased second-hand, bagels are baked at home, we purchase clothes that are mostly sale items and last year’s styles. With the high rent and tuition costs, who can afford luxuries? Cleaning help is a different matter. With our large families, ka”h, a cleaning lady is a necessity. Why should we hike up prices? Our teachers in preschools do not earn what these women earn per hour. Yes, let us all get together b’achdus and keep the prices down. And to the housewife, who wrote the letter “Emunah all the Way,” if you have extra cash, perhaps consider donating it to the Yiddish families next door who can’t afford the extra help. Tight on Cash

Parshas B e s h al a c h By: Malka Schneps
“HELLO, RABBI WINTER,” said Michoel. “I am so thankful that the Rav agreed to meet with me. I know how busy the Rav is.” “Come in and sit down, Michoel. I’m always happy to make time for you.” Rabbi Winter smiled, indeed happy that Michoel, a baal teshuvah who davened in his shul, had called. Michoel had recently begun cooling off a bit in his passion for Yiddishkeit, and Rabbi Winter wanted to help. “I was hoping the Rav could guide me.” Michoel hesitated a moment, and then added, “I… I think there’s something wrong with me.” Rabbi Winter listened intently but said nothing, waiting for Michoel to continue, which he did. “When I first became frum, everything was so easy and clear. I could see hashgacha pratis everywhere I turned, and I could feel the fire inside me when I learned. I did not need to push myself to come to shul — the incredible closeness to Hashem that davening gave me was enough motivation to get me to run to shul.” “Yes,” agreed Rabbi Winter, “I remember that you were always the first to arrive.” “Right, I used to be. And Shabbos! I felt like I could really see and feel the light of Shabbos. But I don’t feel that anymore. Any of it.” Michoel looked down in embarrassment. “I feel so far from Hashem now, like I fell from a high place. Like I said, there’s something wrong with me.” Rabbi Winters smiled gently at Michoel. “There’s nothing wrong with you, Michoel. What you are going through is quite normal. Not only that, but it’s a sign that you are now one step closer to Hashem than you were before.” Michoel looked up with hope in his eyes. “Really?” “Absolutely,” stated Rabbi Winters. “You did indeed fall from a high place, but it wasn’t your true place. When a person makes a choice to get closer to Hashem — as you did when you became frum — Hashem gives them a gift. For a period of time, Hashem lifts them up to experience the spiritual highs a tzaddik might experience. But the tzaddik has earned that place, whereas for you, it was a temporary gift.” “So I wasn’t really on such a high level? It was all a
60 / THE MONSEY VIEW
gift and now it’s gone? No wonder I feel so let down.” Michoel sighed. “But what should I do? I feel so lost.” “It’s all leading you to a potentially better place. Let me explain this a bit deeper.” Rabbi Winter leaned in to speak. “This week’s parsha begins with the word ‘vayehi,’ which is a hint that what follows is sorrow. But what follows is a description of how Hashem led Bnei Yisroel out of Mitzrayim with a pillar of clouds by day and a pillar of fire by night. The sorrow was a feeling of letdown that the Yidden experienced, similar to what you are going through now. “R’ Tzadok Hakohen explains from the Zohar that there are four stages in a person’s journey to get closer to Hashem. Stage one is Revelation, which is the stage you just left. The person chooses to move closer to Hashem, and Hashem opens that person’s mind and lights up his eyes and heart with kedusha. The person will be elevated to a level that is higher than where he truly belongs. Hashem does this to confirm to the person that Hashem is real and that His light does indeed fill the world. Hashem then returns the person to his original, lower state so that he can set out on a journey to get back to that level — but this time, he will have earned his place.” Rabbi Winter leaned back and continued, “Stage two is Concealment. During this stage, the person finds himself back in his lowly place, which feels dark and confusing. This leads to the third stage: Disconnect. The person begins to doubt his experiences and wonders if it was real. After a time, he begins to feel guilt and shame that the life he had been living until then was not in alignment with the previous elevated experience. Then he enters the fourth and final stage: Commitment. He makes a commitment to accept Hashem’s hashgacha and to move forward as a humble servant. The Zohar concludes that eventually this will lead to joy and song.” Michoel stood up with determination burning in his eyes. “Thank you, Rabbi. I think I know what I need to do to get back to where I had been. I need to push forward and earn it by myself.” “On your own, yes, but not by yourself, Michoel.” Rabbi Winter smiled. “We’re all in this together.”

State DOE Reminds Suffern School District of Legal Obligations to Nonpublic School Students Numerous complaints alleging that the Suffern School District has been remiss in its responsibilities to yeshivah students that live within its borders have caught notice of the New York State Department of Education (NYSED), which issued a letter on the matter to district superintendent Dr. Douglas Adams. Agudath Israel of America said in a statement released last week that it had been contacted by multiple Suffern residents whose children were adversely affected by the district’s failure to provide certain mandated services. By law, school districts in New York State are required to provide nonpublic school students with services including transportation, textbooks, health services and special educations services. Advocating for yeshivah parents, the Agudah urged the DOE to contact the school district, and a letter written by NYSED Associate Commissioner, Office of School Services, Renee Rider, reminded Dr. Adams of his legal obligation to provide mandated services to all schools in
the same manner that they are provided to the district’s public school students. Dr. Rider also asked Dr. Adams to build bridges with the private school community, saying, “I strongly encourage you to continue outreach to nonpublic schools and parents to ensure the appropriate, statutorily mandated services are being provided by the SCSD. While the District is legally obligated to provide certain services, I hope that as an educator you will make a personal effort to play a role in the learning and growth of all of the students in your community, regardless of the school in which they are enrolled.” The Agudah’s director of education affairs, Mrs. Deborah Zachai, asked parents and schools to contact her with any additional issues and said that she is optimistic that the letter will help alleviate the concern of yeshivah parents who were denied services by the Suffern School District.
Demolition Begins at Thruway’s Harriman Toll Plaza The iconic Harriman toll plaza heading to the Catskills will soon be taking its place in the annals of history. The New York State Thruway Authority began demolishing the barriers this week as part of a $13.9 million plan to upgrade to an all-cashless toll system. Cashless tolling was first implemented on the northbound lanes of the Thruway in Harriman this past September, part of a $150 million reconstruction of the Woodbury Transit and economic hub. Two lanes using a ticketed toll system will remain in place for southbound drivers. Demolition of the 13-lane toll plaza began this week, well ahead of Governor Andrew Cuomo’s initial estimate of a 2024 completion date for the project. No traffic changes are in place during the initial phases of demolition. Cashless tolling is intended to pro-

The Harriman toll plaza was once used as an informal Mincha area by travelers. It was 1989 when traffic slowdowns and groups of men gathering outside their vehicles and flagging other cars to stop on the shoulder of the Rabbi Edgar Gluck with members of the New highway just past York State Police at Sloatsburg Mincha area, the Harriman toll summer 1991 plaza caught the attention of state troopers. The drivers were putting together Mincha minyanim on their way upstate, a phenomenon that New York State Police spokesman James Atkins described at the
vide a quicker route through the interchange and minimize congestion, with overhead gantries tracking tolls as drivers pass underneath. In a statement released by the governor’s office in midDecember, Thruway Authority Executive Director Matthew J. Driscoll urged drivers to sign up for E-Z Pass, calling it “the most convenient and cost-effective way to pay tolls along the Thruway and across the state.”
time as “a situation meant for disaster,” as reported on VIN News. Rabbi Edgar Gluck, co-founder of Hatzolah, who also served as a special assistant for community projects with the NYSP, worked closely with Thruway officials and then-governor Mario Cuomo to designate an official Mincha area in lieu of the impromptu highway minyanim at the Harriman toll plaza. Over the next few years, the location of the Mincha area changed several times until it ultimately found its current home in 1993 at the Sloatsburg rest stop. Commenting on some of the original Mincha signs on the Thruway that read “Service Area,” Rabbi Gluck quipped, “We take it literally. We hold services.”

How To Find Time To Do Exercise! “I am way too busy to go to the gym. Who has time for that?” When did it become a trend to answer, “how you are doing” with “busy” or “stressed”? It seems like there are people that get the feeling of satisfaction by walking around with a phone permanently attached to their ear. We assume if we are busy we must be doing something. We must be important. In order to get anywhere in life it takes work. It takes effort. It takes being proactive.
you want to be is by focusing on the only thing you have some sort of control over and that is the now. Present time. Your day. Once you know what you want your life to look like it becomes quite simple to find out what you need to be doing so you can at the very least get close to your goals. Simple but not easy. Finding out what you need to do requires you to become honest — really honest with yourself. It requires some self reflection.
But does being busy mean that you are going places? Does it mean you are being proactive?
Most people ignore themselves, don't like to self reflect. They prefer to keep themselves busy because they are afraid of what they will find.
Think about it this way. If you are walking in the opposite direction to your destination does going faster, harder and stronger help you reach your goals quicker?
It is a lot easier to live under the impression that you are doing everything you can to live your life and blame the lack of health and other issues on not having enough time.
No. You are just going to arrive at the wrong place quicker and more exhausted.
If you are real and true to yourself and you really want to take care of your health and the only reason you aren't is because you just don't have time then, recognize that whats keeping you busy may just be distractions holding you back from what is really important in your life.
Before we get busy with time management, it is important for people to first understand what they want to accomplish. Start with the end in mind (Habit #2 from the 7 Habits of Highly Successful People). Otherwise we are going to be putting things into our day that shouldn't be there. We will get busy doing things believing we are being proactive; only to wake up one day not recognizing our own reflection. Our own life. To truly be proactive it is important to start with the end in mind. Know what you want your life to look like and work backwards from there. For example if your aspirations are to get to a position in your life where you don't have to worry about money every single moment of your day. Where you can take time out, learn and spend time with your family then we want to be aware that this is what you want to do.
The way you find out what is really important is by looking inwards. It is important to note that whatever you find inside you doesn't and shouldn't reflect badly on how you view yourself. It is only important to recognize the truth of what you're working with and how you can improve moving forward. You want to find out what your really good at and what you are missing in order to achieve your ideal goals. So for example: imagine you’re goal is to be in a position where you don't have to worry about money. Where you can do what you want to do (sometimes) and still have enough money to live the life you want to live.
Another example would be if your aspirations are to be someone that has their act together. Someone that has all the children packed and ready to go before the school bus arrives. A person that has 3 healthy meals ready for their family and exercises daily. What do you need to do to get there?
First step is recognizing that this is what you want.
I’m sure you can see that achieving these two goals would require different two very different approaches.
Put all the “missing tools” on a list in order; putting the things that are needed right now on the top and work your way down to tools you will need in the future.
The way you get from where you are today to where
Now, we need to understand what does it take to get yourself into a position to achieve this goals. Once you understand what it takes it is now time to see what tools are missing to achieve your goals.
This now becomes your project list. Now that you have an idea of what needs to happen
in roughly what order it needs to happen, it’s time tostart getting things done. It is time to get to your calendar and start to organize your day so you can slowly start to work down your list building your life one day at a time as you get closer and closer to your goals. Here is how you are going to want to do this. First block out time for the things that are nonnegotiable. In order to come up with a list of non-negotiable things it is important to go back to “starting with the end in mind.” Ask yourself: Do you want to achieve your goal of not worrying about money as a person that is unhealthy, sick and alone? Or do you want to achieve your goals and still have the vitality, youthfulness and a family to share the rest of your life with? If you answered yes to the second (good choice, by the way) a typical list of non negotiable things would be: • • • • •
Davening Health Family Work Etc.
With the rest of your time you can start to chip away at your list of “missing tools”. Even if you are working on what may seem like a minimal amount of your “missing tools” list as long as you are doing something you have a much higher chance of creating a life that you want to live. Whatever your goal is, may it be to running a multimillion dollar company or to be the mother that has her house in order you can achieve anything — if you want. It may seem impossible. It may seem like there is no way out. I’m here to tell you there is a way out. Please don't let yourself wake up one day thinking to yourself what on earth was all the busyness for? Get busy building a life with a purpose. Don't forget: Without health you will miss out on the wonderful life you could have even if you do achieve your goals. One way to make health part of your life is to look at health as a non-negotiable item in your day.

This sorbet can be made without an ice cream maker and does not require boiling the juice. It’s really easy to make and the results are incredibly refreshing! Any fruit juice can work with this recipe; you can try pineapple or mango, but adjust the amount of sugar to your taste.
POMEGRANATE SORBET 4 cups pomegranate juice 1 T. lemon juice 1 cup sugar
FRESH ORANGE SORBET 3½ cups freshly squeezed orange juice, strained Taste oranges before juicing to ensure they have a delicious, sweet flavor. Store-bought orange juice works great, too! ½–¾ cup sugar
OPTIONAL GARNISH Whip, pomegranate arils, grated orange rind
DIRECTIONS 1. Stir together juice/s and sugar until sugar is dissolved. 2. Pour juice into a gallon-size Ziploc bag and zip tightly. 3. Put the bag flat on a tray or pan in your freezer (this makes it so much easier to break into chunks when the juice is frozen). Freeze until solid; it will take a few hours. 4. Cut open the bag and quickly cut or break the frozen juice into ice-cube size chunks. Put half the chunks into the bowl of your food processor fitted with the S blade. Keep remaining chunks in the freezer. Process until completely smooth. You may have to stop while blending to rearrange the frozen chunks. Pour sorbet into a large container or loaf pan. Freeze. 5. Repeat with the remaining frozen chunks. Put sorbet back into the freezer to firm it up a bit. NOTE: This sorbet has the best texture within a few hours after it’s made. The pomegranate sorbet will remain soft; the orange sorbet may harden in the freezer. If it gets too hard to scoop, take it out of the freezer and let it soften up for a few minutes before serving.

Fruit and Nut Chocolate Medallions
80 / THE MONSEY VIEW
A fruity and heavenly bite-sized treat to satisfy your sweet tooth! Best of all, it is simple and easy to make.
INGREDIENTS 7 oz. good-quality dark chocolate (I used Noblesse chocolate) Assorted dried fruits, chopped into small pieces (I used dried pineapple, guava, kiwi and craisins) Nuts (I used shelled pistachios, cashews and pecans)
DIRECTIONS 1. Line two trays or cookie sheets with parchment paper. On the back of each of the parchment papers, draw 10–12 circles with a black marker, each about 2 inches wide. These will be your guides. 2. Break chocolate into pieces and melt them in a double boiler, stirring frequently. Alternatively, heat the chocolate in a microwave-safe bowl, stirring every 30 seconds until the chocolate is completely melted and smooth. 3. With a spoon, drizzle some of the chocolate into the center of each drawn circle and smooth it out with the back of a spoon. Make 5–6 at a time. 4. Drop some of the dried fruits and nuts onto each circle of chocolate. 5. Place the trays in the refrigerator for 20 minutes or until the chocolate has set. Note: if you don’t have the time or patience to make individual bites, you can pour all the chocolate onto the parchment paper, spread it thinly, sprinkle the fruits and nuts on top of it, and refrigerate. Once the chocolate has set, coarsely chop the bark into small pieces.

Three-Layered Pomegranate Mousse Cake This elegant fruity cake is a showstopper. The sponge layers are light and airy, and the pomegranate mousse has a divine, fruity flavor with a slight tang. The pomegranate jello topping adds a unique and beautiful element, but if you prefer simpler preparation, you can easily skip the pomegranate jello and instead just top the center of the cake with a generous layer of fresh pomegranate arils.
84 / THE MONSEY VIEW
DIRECTIONS Before starting preparation for the cakes, prepare ice cubes in the freezer for the last step (the pomegranate topping), if using.
CAKES 8 eggs, separated
CAKES
1⅓ cups sugar
1. Preheat the oven to 350°. Line three 9-inch round cake pans with parchment paper and lightly spray the sides.
1 T. vanilla sugar
2. Make a firm snow with the egg whites and sugar. Very gently fold in the yolks, vanilla, oil, juice and then the dry ingredients. 3. Divide evenly among the three prepared pans. Bake for 22 minutes, but if your oven is especially strong, check for doneness after 21 minutes — you don’t want to overbake the cakes. 4. Allow cakes to cool. (You can freeze the cakes so they’re easier to work with when assembling).
POMEGRANATE MOUSSE 1. In a small saucepan, sprinkle gelatin over the pomegranate juice. Let stand for two minutes. Stir in sugar and cook over medium heat, stirring frequently, until steaming. 2. Remove from heat, cool for 5 minutes and then refrigerate mixture for 30 minutes. 3. Beat the whip in your mixer until stiff. Fold a third of the whip into the cooled pomegranate mixture, and then lightly mix the pomegranate mixture with the rest of the whip. Gently fold in the raspberry jello.
1½ T. oil 1½ T. orange juice 1 cup flour ¾ tsp. baking powder
POMEGRANATE MOUSSE 2 tsp. unflavored gelatin (you can find this in any grocery store near the jello) 1 cup pomegranate juice ¼ cup sugar 16 oz. whip, slightly thawed 2 T. raspberry jello (powder)
WHIP ASSEMBLY (AND WHIP TOPPING) 1. Remove cakes from pans. If necessary, trim the top edges of each cake with a serrated knife to make the cake tops completely even. 2. Spread a third of the mousse mixture on the surface of the bottom cake. Place another cake on top of the mousse, and repeat another two times. 3. Place the cake in the freezer until the cream is completely firm. 4. Beat whip until stiff. Pipe or spread on top of the assembled cake. The outer edge of the whip should be a bit taller than the middle. Freeze or refrigerate the cake.
8 oz. whip
POMEGRANATE JELLO TOPPING (This topping is optional; see introduction.) ¾ cup pomegranate juice 2 T. sugar
TOPPING
2 tsp. gelatin
(Optional, a generous amount of pomegranate arils can be put in the center of the cake instead.)
1¼ cups pomegranate arils
5. Place ¾ cup of pomegranate juice in a small sauce pan and sprinkle in 2 teaspoons gelatin. Let stand for 1 minute to soften gelatin before putting it on the flame. 6. Whisk in 2 tablespoons sugar and cook over medium heat, constantly stirring until sugar dissolves and mixture is steaming. 7. Remove from heat and let mixture cool down a bit for 4–5 minutes. Then set the saucepan into a larger bowl of ice water, stirring gently until it is cold and slightly thickened, but not set — it doesn’t take long. (Mixture should look like a thin syrup; make sure it doesn’t thicken into a jello.)
Remove from ice bath. 8. Stir in pomegranate seeds, and immediately spoon topping onto the chilled cake (you might not have to use the entire topping). Refrigerate cake until the topping is set (about 1 hour).

Good to Know! • Pomegranates are at their peak now! Their season typically runs from October through February. • Pomegranates are packed with important nutrients, including antioxidants, vitamin C and potassium. • When selecting pomegranates, look for a ripe, deep-colored fruit with a red to reddish-brown outer rind that is heavy for its size. • The fruit, when unopened, will last three to four weeks in the refrigerator.

“LOOK!” DOVI CALLED OUT TO HIS BROTHER. “It’s a real nest! And I see two little eggs inside! Maybe we can do shiluach haken!” The boys ran to tell their father what they had found. They soon discovered that it wasn’t as simple as they’d thought. Quite a few specifications must be met before the mitzvah of shiluach haken can be performed! The bird must be kosher and it must be sitting on the eggs or baby birds. The bird must be ownerless, and if hatched, the hatchlings must be very young. Sometimes the mother and father birds take turns tending the nest, but it must be the mother bird specifically that is sent away. No sticks or hands are necessary, but the noise or other action must be made with the explicit intention of sending her away. Then the eggs or hatchlings are taken. No bracha is made. Shiluach haken is an interesting mitzvah, one that is hard to understand on a simple level. Yet the reward is so great, as the pasuk specifies, “l’man yitav lach, v’haarachta yamim.” For sending away a roosting mother bird and taking her young, one is granted all good and long life! Rashi explains that this comes to teach us that if such a relatively simple and inexpensive mitzvah brings such great rewards, how much greater must be the reward for more difficult mitzvos?

IN AND AROUND MONSEY CHERISHED WINGS Most opinions maintain that one need not go looking for a nest to perform shiluach haken; it is meant to be executed if you “happen” upon a nest, as it says, “Ki ‘yikarei’ kan tzipor.” It isn’t something that “happens” every day, so when it does, it engenders much excitement. “We decided to showcase our little egg in the china closet,” one woman said. “It is, after all, a ‘cheftza shel mitzvah!’” You can imagine the surprise of her children, when a couple of days later, they woke up to the sound of a baby bird squawking! The spotlights in the china closet warmed the egg as if it were an incubator… When the Braunsteins discovered a nest on their windowsill, they chose to honor their rav with the mitzvah. A few members of the shul came along to observe the special event. “The rav then replaced the egg in the nest so that I too would be able to perform the mitzvah,” Mr. Braunstein shared. “The next evening, I called over a friend in need of a yeshuah so he could have the zechus as well. Oddly, the eggs had disappeared…” According to some poskim, it is perfectly okay to be mafkir the egg and put it back inside the nest so the mitzvah can be repeated. However, the mother bird would need to return and be sent away again.

The most common qualifying bird in Monsey is the sparrow, followed closely by pigeons and robins. These may be kosher for shiluach haken, but are not to be eaten! The black birds foraging in the garbage are not kosher. Sparrows need but a small space to create a nest. Generally, they build them in crevices on the outsides of our houses, on top of doorways, and on beams or boards of porches. In our area, fewer nests are found on trees because of the abundance of squirrels jumping from branch to branch, disturbing the birds. The season for egg-laying is in the spring or summer. During that time, you may want to track down a nest! Here are some tips to help you find one: A pair of birds will work together to build a nest by scavenging for twigs or other findings. Spread food on a clean area (not on the grass). The birds will keep coming to peck at some crumbs between their work. Observing them from a distance will allow you to discern where they are taking the twigs. When the bird is not around, you can approach the spot to check out the nest! The nest may not be touched before the bird lays eggs because then the mother will likely never return. The sparrow typically lays two eggs per season. She lays one egg in early evening, and sits on it as night descends. The next night, she lays a second egg. During the daytime, the father bird often takes over, watching over the eggs. As shekiah approaches, the mother has usually returned to the nest. This is the ideal time to perform shiluach haken!

That’s why we say, kodesh kodashim, and we do not question them!” The listener remained quiet, but his face continued ‘Moshe emes v’Toraso emes!’” to display his skepticism. Disturbed, Rav Attia entreated a silent prayer, “Ribono Shel Olam, please let the truth of REWARD IS HATCHING Your holy Torah be recognized!” Shiluach haken is one of two mitzvos whose rewards are A couple of moments later, the door opened and one delineated in the Torah. On a simple level, taking eggs or baby birds from their nest seems to be an act of cruelty, when in effect, this mitzvah teaches the middos of compassion and kindness. 96 / THE MONSEY VIEW / January 16, 2019 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484
CULTIVATING COMPASSION On a simple level, taking eggs or baby birds from their nest seems to be an act of cruelty, when in effect, this mitzvah teaches the middos of compassion and kindness. People connect emotionally, and it is the natural way of the world for family and friends to miss one another when separated. Conversely, the connection birds develop for their young is a temporary, short-term issue. Baby birds grow wings and fly off on their own, and the mother bird does not spend the rest of her life reminiscing and yearning for them. She may go on to continue laying and hatching more eggs, and her pain is therefore short-lived. The Zohar describes that when the mother bird weeps for her young, the bird’s malach intercedes on her behalf before Hakadosh Baruch Hu. In turn, Hashem gathers His other malachim and points out, “This malach is concerned about the welfare of a bird… Do any of you seek merit for My children, the Yidden, and the Shechinah, whose nest in Yerushalayim has been destroyed…?” Thus, through the mitzvah of shiluach haken, we arouse Hashem’s mercy and stimulate the showering of Hashem’s compassion on us. It is our sincere dream that the Ribono Shel Olam, upon seeing Yidden perform this mitzvah, will return His flock to their nest with the coming of Moshiach.

IT’S ONE THING for my second-grade granddaughter to read about a mother robin sitting on her eggs until they hatch, and about their father helping to find worms to feed the hatchlings, but it was quite another thing for them to discover an actual robin’s nest under the corner of our porch. Not only were the usual sticks and twigs used in its construction, but somehow, somewhere, the robin had found white ribbon and shiny pieces of foil with which she decorated her nest. The nest was under the slats of our porch, and the only way to see what was happening inside was to look through the spaces between them. The children had no problem lying prone on the floor and putting their eyes to the crack. Thus, we got a day-today report on the internal affairs of our robin’s home. “Bubby, there’s an egg in the nest.” “Now she laid another one.” “There are three now!” They also reported on the robin’s comings and goings, and how she kept on rearranging the eggs in the nest, sometimes positioning them in a straight line, and sometimes placing them in the form of a triangle. We also noticed an interesting phenomenon regarding the bird. Attached to the side of the porch are two heavily used swings. The movements of the swings and the noise of children at play did not faze the robin at all. Yet when anyone approached from the street in front of the porch, just breathing a bit loudly, it was enough to send the robin into flight. I guess she instinctively felt threatened when she sensed an adult approaching. Since the chance practically came knocking at

my door, I wanted to perform the mitzvah of shiluach haken. The first few times I came close to the porch, the mother bird flew away before I had a chance to chase her away. Finally, holding my breath as I approached, wielding a broomstick, she cooperated. A light tap on the nest, and the robin was aloft, leaving her eggs unattended. I reached in (with the help of a ladder, of course) and took out the eggs. The best way to describe these robin’s eggs is that they looked like Jordan almonds on steroids. They were proof that the paint and crayon color “robin’s egg blue” is an accurate description. What surprised me while holding the eggs was how warm they were — though I should have expected that! Most people who do shiluach haken keep the eggs as a souvenir; others return the eggs to the nest. Some birds, such as doves and sparrows, will not come back to their nests after they’ve been disturbed by human presence. A robin has a different nature, though. I opted to return the eggs to their nest because my grandchildren were anxious to watch them hatch. Wouldn’t every grandmother do the same for her darlings? Sure enough, about fifteen minutes after I performed the mitzvah, the robin was once again sitting on her eggs. Then the waiting began. The mother sat on the eggs most of the time, though she flew off occasionally, either because she was disturbed, or perhaps to look for food. The children kept on checking the nest. Soon one grandson claimed that he saw a crack in an egg, but another child disputed it, saying that what he was seeing was a piece of grass, and that the egg was still whole. It seemed to my impatient grandchildren that the waiting was taking forever, but at long last, one morning they reported that two eggs had hatched, though nothing seemed to be happening with the third egg. The fledglings, who are born without feathers, were described by the children as looking “like the raw chicken that mommy cooks.” The next morning there were two robins on my roof, each with a worm dangling from its mouth. The worms were provided by the father, who we learned comes into the picture when it is imperative to keep hungry little mouths satisfied. Watching and reporting on the happenings in the nest kept my grandchildren fascinated. Every day they reported on the changes, as the birds grew larger and their feathers thickened. One Friday, a half hour before Shabbos, the excited children came to report that the father bird (don’t ask me how they knew it was the father, but trust me — they knew) was sitting on the edge of the nest with the fledglings near him. I guess this was lesson number one in “how to fly”! The third egg never hatched, so I thought that I would get my shiluach haken souvenir after all. I figured I would wait until the birds flew away, because I wouldn’t dream of disturbing the tranquility in that lovely nest while it was occupied. However, I was in for a disappointment. When the babies were ready to fly away, the mother must have done a thorough house cleaning. The nest looked as if it had been swept clean, and my little blue egg was nowhere to be seen. Had they eaten it? Had they taken it along with them? Had some sort of predator visited the nest? I guess this is one mystery that will never be solved. As disappointed as I was for not getting the egg, I am still thankful to Hashem for giving me the opportunity to show my grandchildren a real live lesson in niflaos haBorei.

DR. MOSHE DAVIDSON* is a frum neurologist in his fifties. Last year, at a professional conference, he shared this interesting narrative that was told to him by one of his patients. Hershel, a simple old Yid in his eighties, was a steady patient at Dr. Davidson’s clinic. He visited the office periodically for follow-up treatment and to refill his prescriptions. One morning, Hershel came for his appointment, and Dr. Davidson immediately noticed something different. Until now, Hershel would

arrive together with his wife, but this time, he came alone. “Where’s your wife?” Dr. Davidson asked affably. Smiling serenely, Hershel replied, “She passed away.” “When did that happen?” the doctor pressed. “Two months ago.” Dr. Davidson noticed that the smile did not leave Hershel’s face for even a second. “That must have been hard,” he said. “Yes,” Hershel nodded, still smiling. “It was very hard.”
Dr. Davidson knew the couple well. They seemed to have been happily married for about sixty years. Such a separation doesn’t usually pass with a simple smile. Though his case had been mild, Hershel was ultimately an Alzheimer’s patient. His condition must have worsened if he doesn’t seem to be bothered much by his wife’s passing, the doctor thought. It was quiet for another moment and then Hershel added, “When I sat shivah, I cried a lot. I couldn’t contain my pain… My wife and I had discussed the topic of death, but there is a huge difference between the discussion and the reality. Neighbors, friends and family came to be menachem avel. That made the pain a bit lighter. But when I got up from shivah, my pain got so much worse. I was alone with the four walls of my home. I’d never felt so lonely before. I felt I couldn’t cope.” The pain that had overtaken his features lifted, and Hershel gave a little chuckle. “Then an interesting thing happened. I was eating breakfast at the kitchen table, and the window near me was open. I heard the sound of flapping wings, and suddenly there was a white dove sitting on the windowsill. A moment later it flew inside and settled on the back of the chair across from me. I looked at the bird. She was beautiful, white as snow, and she was looking right back at me with her tiny black eyes. I felt a certain peace. “I finished eating and left the house for a morning shiur that I often attend. When I got back home in the afternoon, the dove was perched on her spot on the chair. I sat down to eat and the dove sat opposite me.” Hershel stopped. He looked at the doctor, and seeing that he was listening intently, continued, “That’s

how the first few days passed. The bird kept me company. Every time I sat across from the bird, I didn’t feel the aching loneliness. It was as if she was telling me, ‘You are not alone!’ and I didn’t feel so lonely. “And you know what? When I went into the next room, the bird would follow me and perch on the vanity, the closet shelf or the windowsill.
Such a separation doesn’t usually pass with a simple smile. Whenever I was in the house, the bird stayed with me. She didn’t leave me alone for even a minute!” Dr. Davidson peered at his patient. He had listened to every detail of Hershel’s account carefully. Now he was convinced with certainty that the disease must have worsened, perhaps as a result of his loss. Hershel was obviously living in a fantasy world, letting his imagination overtake his reality. “I will schedule an appointment for you in another two days,” Dr. Davidson said. “And I want you to come along with your son.” After following through with the examination, the doctor walked Hershel out, repeating firmly, “Make sure not to come without your son.” Dr. Davidson felt a responsibility to make sure the family was aware of Hershel’s decline. When Hershel and his son showed up two days later, Dr. Davidson told the son about the inconceivable story that his father had recounted. He was sure that the son would confirm that the bird was but one of the indicators of Henry’s deteriorating condition, but when the doctor finished talking, the son surprised him with his response. “Did he tell you about our trip?” “No,” Dr. Davidson replied. “In that case, let me share it with you. Almost three weeks after my mother passed away, I took my father to a resort about an hour away from his home. I figured that two days of complete relaxation would have a calming effect on him after all he’d been through. As I was helping my father into the car, we spotted the dove near us. My father, who had become very attached to his feathered friend, asked me to bring it along. I acquiesced and managed to get the bird into the car. “Soon we arrived at the hotel, and my father and I came out of the car. The bird also came out, but to our dismay, she began to flap her wings

and off she flew. As she disappeared from view, my father kept berating himself, ‘I shouldn’t have brought her along!’ “Two days later, we went back home. All along the way, my father kept talking about the wondrous bird. ‘She was constantly there with me and helped me get used to living alone... She made me forget my loneliness… I have nothing to return to, the house will now really be empty… What a shame she flew away…’ In his sorrow, he was really taking it hard. “But then, when we walked inside my parents’ home, we found a real surprise! The kitchen window had been left open, and standing there on the windowsill was — my father’s white dove!” Hershel, who had been listening silently to his son’s account of his story, suddenly chimed in, “You can’t imagine… I was so excited! I sat down to eat lunch and the bird perched on her spot again. I looked into her eyes and again I felt the same feeling of warmth — I was not alone! Someone sent the bird to me…” “On the day of the shloshim,” the son continued, “when we came home from the beis hakvaros, the bird jumped off her place on the corner of the chair and flew over to the windowsill. She spread her wings and fluttered through the window, soaring higher and higher into the sky. Since then, she never came back.” “It was a special gift,” Hershel concluded with a smile. “A gift from Heaven… The Borei Olam in His rachmanus sent the dove to help me pass those first thirty days to ease the loneliness that I was left with.” The gift of the dove was so comforting and so powerful to Hershel that it left an everlasting smile on his face, reflecting his inner peace.
Now he was convinced with certainty that the disease must have worsened, perhaps as a result of his loss.

HILCHOS BORER | PART 6
IMMEDIATE USE We mentioned in previous articles that when faced with a mixture of two different types of foods or items, or a mixture of ochel (food) with pesoles (garbage),1 one can avoid issues of borer by following three conditions: 1) taking what one wants to eat or use now from what one doesn’t; 2) taking it only immediately before eating or using; and 3) using one’s hands and not a kli that helps in the separation process.2 Let’s discuss the second condition of immediate use. What is considered immediate use? The main question here is how long before use one may do borer to comply with the condition of immediate use. Though there are different opinions about this, one should only begin preparations that require borer the latest possible, only leaving the amount of time it takes to get it ready for use.3 For example, there is a mixture of spoons, forks and knives in the drawer, and one wants to set the table for the upcoming meal. If it takes approximately ten minutes to set up, then one can only start doing borer approximately ten minutes before the time one plans on starting the seudah. What’s important is to begin the use at the end of the borer process. When there are other preparations for the meal that don’t require borer, then according to some poskim, one should begin those preparations before the borer preparations so that the borer will be done immediately before use.4 Many people eating together For a large seudah where many people will be eating together,5 some hold that one can start preparations early enough to leave the amount of time it takes to prepare, so if it takes one hour to prepare, then one may start from one hour before.6 However, it is brought in the name of the Chazon Ish that the maximum amount of time to start preparing for a seudah for many people is a half hour (see footnote).7
120 / THE MONSEY VIEW / January 16, 2019 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484
Not planning other things before use It is important to note that one may not start doing borer earlier in order to be able to do other things after one is finished with doing borer. So Mommy can’t do borer to set the table earlier than the time it takes to set up in order to go to a kiddush afterward — and then come home to a set table. She also can’t set it earlier than she needs to because she plans on davening or cleaning up the toys after setting up,8 because it is considered a hefsek in the immediate use. Similarly, Mommy can’t take all the kids’ clothing from a mixture of clothing in their drawer all at once because the
1 See Taz 319:12; Shulchan Aruch HaRav 319:8; Mishnah Berurah 319:15; not like the Ohr Sameach, Shabbos 8:11, who holds there is no borer by kelim. 2 Shulchan Aruch 319:1; see Shulchan Aruch HaRav 319:1 who explains that these three conditions constitute derech achilah and therefore it is mutar. 3 This is the opinion of the Igros Moshe, Orach Chaim, vol. 4, siman 74, borer 13. See also Chut Shani 25:4. See Magen Avraham 321:15 and Mishnah Berurah 321:45. See Biur Halacha 319:3 “sheberer shachris” where he brings more lenient opinions with regard to borer of shnei minei ochlin. But lemaskanah he is machmir there as well. See Shulchan Aruch HaRav 319:3-4 where he says “samuch l’seudah mamash” but also uses the lashon of “shaah.” It seems that “shaah” is lav davka.
See Teshuvos V’Hanhagos vol. 2 siman 185. But see Ayil Meshulash perek 8 footnote 22 who says in the name of Rav Nissim Karelitz, shlit”a, that one doesn’t have to do this.
4
5 See Ayil Meshulash 8:14 where he says that if the people will not eat together then even according to the meikel opinions one cannot take the time it takes to prepare for all of them together since they have no connection to each other, and preparation for each one will be considered a hefsek in immediate use of the other. 6 See Shaar Hatzion 611:9;M’or HaShabbos vol. 1 Michtav 8 of Rav Shlomo Zalman Auerbach; Ayil Meshulash 8:13. 7 See Ayil Meshulash 8:13. It must be pointed out that even according to the Chazon Ish, if it takes less than a half-hour to prepare, one shouldn’t begin a half-hour before — the time of a half-hour is l’chumrah, not l’kulah. This is the understanding of Rav Nissim Karelitz, shlit”a, in regard to the Chazon Ish (see Chut Shani).
See Shemiras Shabbos K’hilchasah 3:75–76. Ayil Meshulash 8:6.
8
See Ayil Meshulash 8:9 in the name of Rav Nissim Karelitz, shlit”a.

See Shulchan Aruch, Orach Chaim 319:1 Rema and Mishna Berurah 319:4. See Ayil Meshulash 8:8 and Shemiras Shabbos K’hilchasah 3:69. See also Iglei Tal 319:5.

It seems that the halacha could vary depending on whether dessert is generally eaten and also whether one does it before or after bentching.
11
dressing of one child is considered a hefsek in the immediate use of the other kids’ clothing.9 So what should one do if he wants to set up early? One eitzah is to make sure things are not in a mixture. For example, make sure the knives, forks and spoons are clearly separated in the drawer in a way that they are not considered a mixture. That way, one may set up even before, by taking the knives and setting them — and then taking the spoons and setting them, etc. But even when the cutlery is separated in the drawer, one may not remove them from the drawer together because then they are considered mixed in one’s hands, which would mean that one would have to wait to set it up immediately before use. Borer for the whole seudah However, not everything is considered a hefsek in immediate use. For example, one is allowed to set up the knives and forks on the table for the main course, even though one will only serve it after the fish and soup. In this case, since the entire meal is looked at as one unit, the fish and soup are not considered a hefsek beforehand. Therefore, as long as one prepares immediately before the meal, it is okay to do so for the other courses as well.10 When it comes to dessert, though, it is not clear whether it is considered a part of the meal or not, and therefore, one should not do borer for dessert before the meal.11 The purpose of this column is to bring awareness to matters of halacha. As with any halacharelated questions, consult your rav for a psak.

Story Turnabout! By: R. Tov
The houses of Eretz Yisroel had long disappeared from view. Rav S., a prominent rosh yeshivah with a glowing countenance, sat on the plane, engrossed in his seforim, using every moment of his precious time to learn Torah. He wasn’t a “man of the world”; never before had he left Eretz Yisroel. But now his yeshivah’s dire financial straits had compelled him to set out for England on a fundraising campaign to ensure his beloved students’ uninterrupted learning. Soon enough, Rav S. found himself at the doorstep of the wealthy gvir, Mr. Michael. He hoped that Mr. Michael, who was known to contribute generously to institutions of Torah and chesed, would give his yeshivah a handsome donation. He never imagined what would take place in the following moments at the Michael home...
124 / THE MONSEY VIEW / January 16, 2019 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484
The rosh yeshivah was received respectfully and invited to enter the magnificent living room, which was illuminated by crystal chandeliers. He sat down on one of the plush chairs surrounding the mahogany table and pulled out an album with photos of the yeshivah. He spoke about the special atmosphere, the daily schedule of the diligent bachurim, the staff of dedicated maggidei shiurim, and also — about the difficult financial situation that threatened the yeshivah’s continued existence. Mr. Michael listened with interest, leafed a bit through the album, and said, “Please wait here while I go to my workroom to fetch the checkbook.” Rav S. nodded politely and asked the host for permission to use a volume of Gemara that lay on the table in the interim. “Of course. It would be my pleasure for the Rosh Yeshivah to learn
from my Gemara,” said Mr. Michael. A few minutes later, the gvir returned with a checkbook and a gilt pen. He glanced momentarily at the esteemed rosh yeshivah sitting there at the table, appearing to be engrossed in a sugya of the Gemara, and then it happened — “I’m very sorry, but I’ve changed my mind,” said Mr. Michael coolly, his eyes fixed on the rosh yeshivah. “I’ve decided that I’m not donating anything to your yeshivah.” Shocked silence. The stunned rosh yeshivah couldn’t understand what lay behind the gvir’s sudden change of heart. As he took his papers and headed for the door, he gently said, “Forgive me for asking, sir, but what caused this abrupt change in your decision? I suspect that there was some mistake…” The gvir looked again at Rav S.’s stately face and then said apologetically, “I’m sorry, but I prefer to give my money to genuine talmidei chachamim, not to someone who introduces himself as a rosh yeshivah, yet does not even know how to read —” An uncomfortable silence reigned in the large room, but the next moment, a pleasant smile lit up the rosh yeshivah’s face. “I understand. You must have noticed that the Gemara I was studying was upside down, and you concluded that I don’t even know how to open a Gemara…” said Rav S. He returned to the table, picked up the Gemara he had been studying shortly before, and to Mr. Michael’s amazement, began reading it fluently, even though it was upside down! The gvir listened, open-mouthed, to Rav S.’s story. “I was born in Yemen. We used to learn in groups with the ‘mori,’ and each group had only one sefer. Since my place was always opposite the mori, I got used to reading upside down… Of course, today I can also read text that is straight, but reading upside down is easier, since that is how I learned to read as a child.” Rav S. left Mr. Michael’s mansion that day with a particularly substantial check, and he left behind him, in the elaborate, brightly-lit living room, a memorable message: How important it is to always judge favorably — no matter how puzzling the situation! (Based on a story in Achas Sha’alti)
Ask the Rav Deserted by a Good Friend By: Harav Hagaon R’ Menachem Mendel Fuchs, Shlit”a Moreh Tzedek of the Eidah Hachareidis, Rav Kiryas Shomrei Hachomos, Ramot, and Rav of Mishmeres Hasholom
Question Many times I hear my brothers speaking disparagingly about things that my mother does. For example, that lunch didn’t taste good, or that they were supposed to go visit our cousins but my mother kept dawdling because of the little kids, etc. Sometimes I try to explain to them that you’re not allowed to talk like that about a mother, that it’s lashon hara, and that besides, my mother is a tzadekes who works so hard for our sake. But they don’t listen to me, apparently because I’m their younger sister. What can I do?
Answer If the brothers’ words are said in a derogatory manner or without to’eles, constructive purpose, they will often contain lashon hara, and sometimes also rechilus. But one should be aware that, in most cases, this conduct also involves severe sins of dishonoring their mother, which falls under the category of the extremely serious mitzvah of kibbud av v’eim. This is the case even when there are real flaws in the mother’s functioning! Of deeds such as these, the Torah tells us: “Accursed is one who degrades his father and mother,” r”l, as the Chofetz Chaim ruled (Pesichah, mitzvos aseh 10). The Shulchan Aruch, too (YD 241:6), states explicitly that one who degrades his father and mother, even insinuatingly, is deemed cursed by the mouth of Hashem, and the beis din should penalize him for this with makas mardus and other punishments! It’s frightening! In light of this, the suggestion would be for the questioner to show her brothers the abovementioned words of the Chofetz Chaim and the Shulchan Aruch. It’s advisable to also show them the words of the Sefer Chareidim (ch. 9, sections 26, 27, 35–38), which elaborate on the severity of these matters. She can present them with all this material photocopied from the seforim, in an orderly fashion. Then, they will hopefully, b’siyata d’Shmaya, be inspired to rectify their deeds and be zoche to the birchas haTorah, as it says, “So that your days will be lengthened, etc.”

THROUGH A LENS OF ZECHUS Resounding Screams It was a pleasant winter day. The clouds had scattered and the rain had stopped. Kids went out to ride their bikes and play in the park, and I sat on the porch reading the new book I’d gotten from Zeidy and Bubby for Chanukah. Suddenly, from the window of the downstairs neighbors, I heard the voice of Yaakov — the boy my age who attends a different cheder. He was — yes, I’m sure, I heard it with my own ears — screaming at his father with terrible chutzpah. I heard him say, “Get out of here! I don’t want to see you here anymore…!” Yaakov is the youngest. His older brothers are away in yeshivah; his sisters are married. His mother is usually out of the house at this time of day. Who, besides his father, could he be screaming at? On the outside, he actually looks like a good boy… Who would think that he’d act so shamefully at home? I couldn’t bear to hear it any more. I went inside, closed the door to the porch, and read another chapter in my book. Then my mother asked me to go to the store. I went down one flight of steps. The door to Yaakov’s house was open, and he was busy walking out his married sister and her five little kids. I heard the sister say, “Nu, kinderlach, say thank you to Yaakov for the nice story he acted out for you.” The children all said in unison, “Thank you!” Then one of the boys added, “The best part was when you played the mean paritz who screams and chases out the goy who wants to say bad things about the Jew…” It’s a miracle that Yaakov was so busy with his nephews that he didn’t see my face turning red as a beet. Chutzpah? No! It was simply a dramatic skit performed for a rapt audience of cute nephews...
How simple it appears, when you know the other side,
How important to find a zechus, when the details seem to hide.

HOUSE SPARROW
NORTHERN CARDINAL
BLUE JAY
This bird is found in most parts of the world, in both rural and urban residential settings. Sparrows feed mostly on seeds of grains, weeds, insects and other foods. On the ground they typically hop rather than walk. While these are the most common sparrows in the area, there are more sparrow species that call Monsey their home.
Also known as the redbird, common cardinal or just cardinal, this songbird has a distinctive crest on the head and mask on the face. Male cardinals are a vibrant red with black masks, and females are a dull reddish-olive with gray masks. Cardinals were once prized as pets, but in 1918 their sale as cagebirds was banned in the U.S.
Sometimes called a jaybird, the blue jay lives in residential areas through most of Eastern and Central United States, and as far north as Newfoundland, Canada. It mainly feeds on nuts such as acorns, which blue jays hide like squirrels for later consumption, as well as soft fruits and different insects.
AMERICAN ROBIN
COMMON YELLOWTHROAT
Known for its reddish-orange breast, this migratory songbird is widely distributed throughout North America and is second to the most prevalent bird on the continent. It is the state bird of three states: Connecticut, Michigan and Wisconsin.
This warbler is abundant throughout North America and winters in Central America and the West Indies. Adult males have black face masks bordered with white or gray. Females have paler yellow underparts and no mask. The yellowthroats in our area are less vibrant than their southwestern counterparts.
128 / THE MONSEY VIEW / January 16, 2019 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484
AMERICAN GOLDFINCH
RUBY-THROATED HUMMINGBIRD
This migratory finch winters in Mexico. The male is vibrant yellow in the summer and an olive color during the winter, while the female is a duller yellow-brown shade, brightening just a bit in the summer.
The most common hummingbird seen east of the Mississippi River in North America, these migrators have one of the highest metabolic rates of any animal, with up to 1,260 heartbeats per minute, 250 breaths per minute and oxygen consumption during flight that is 10 times higher than a human athlete. You will usually only sight them if you prepare feeders for them at the beginning of spring.
WOODPECKERS Most woodpeckers live in wooded habitats, mostly in holes that they excavate in tree trunks. They’re known for the echoing sounds they produce when “woodpecking,” drumming their beaks against the bark of a tree. Below are the four woodpeckers commonly found in our area.
Downy Woodpecker
Northern Flicker
Red-Bellied Woodpecker
Pileated Woodpecker
COMMON GRACKLE
NORTHERN HOUSE WREN
PIGEON
These black-feathered birds have purple, green or blue iridescence on the head. The females are smaller and have less iridescence than the males. They live in open or semi-open areas across North America, and the northern birds migrate in flocks to the southeastern U.S. for the winter.
The house wren is a very small songbird widely distributed throughout America, often seen in suburban areas.
Also knowns as doves, with no clear distinction between the two names, pigeons are the most common birds in the world. In fact, they are found all over Earth except for the driest areas of the Sahara Desert, the high Arctic, and Antarctica and its surrounding islands.

COMMON RAVEN
COMMON STARLING
Also known as the northern raven, the large all-black bird is found across the Northern Hemisphere. They feed on just about anything and can thrive in various climates.
Also knowns as the European starling, these birds have a metallic sheen with different hues. Their bills are black in the winter and yellow in the summer, and they migrate southwest for the winter.
AMERICAN CROW
BLACK VULTURE
All black with iridescent feathers, the crow looks very similar to the common raven, but can be distinguished from it by its smaller size. They are susceptible to the West Nile virus, serving as bioindicators to track the virus’s spread. (Direct transmission from crows to humans are unlikely.)
Although black vultures were seen years ago in the southern states only, these “road cleaners” as they’re called for their tendency to eat roadkill, have become common in the Northeast too. There are some turkey vultures in the area as well.
BALD EAGLES You won’t usually spot eagles on the ground round our parts (unless you’re near a large body of water), but you will often see them flying high. They are not actually bald; their name is derived from an older meaning of the word — “white-headed.” The bald eagle is the national bird of the U.S. and appears on the the U.S. seal. Word of caution: If you find an eagle feather, don’t keep it! According to law, only individuals of certifiable American Indian ancestry are allowed to possess an eagle part. As for the rest of us? We risk facing a fine of up to $250,000 by doing so.
