Orange and Rockland recently sent out letters about an upcoming change in their electricity control measures. They will be installing “Smart Meters” in every household, from which they can remotely monitor electricity use. This device is suspected by some to be of threat to health, as there is a bit of radiation emitted from the device. There is an option to opt out of this system before installation, to the tune of a $15 fee per month. If a Smart Meter was installed, you can still opt out for a $90 fee. O&R expects to complete all installations within the next 30 days. A Concerned Citizen

ALL MIXED UP As a resident of Remsen Avenue, I’d like to reach out to the public to see if there’s anything that can be done about the recent change of house numbers on our street. Immediately after the numbers were changed, our mail was being forwarded to us, but at this point we don’t receive more than just some of our mail. We learned about a close friend’s wedding the day it was taking place, and these mess-ups happen often! The numbers are also very confusing. We were as-

A CLEAN MAIN STREET Walking down Main Street, I often see all types of garbage littering the streets. The only public garbage can along Main Street is a small receptacle in the bus shelter at Horizon Court. Even that does not get emptied, and the garbage has been piling up for the last while. The goal of this letter is twofold: 1) Residents passing through Main Street should be careful not to throw any litter on the floor. The types of things that got tossed there are embarrassing. 2) Is there anyone who can facilitate the installation of garbage receptacles at every corner, and make sure that the garbage gets collected often? It would make such a difference for our town’s shopping center. Anonymous

A LESSON A WEEK (RE: Living Halacha) Thank you for your weekly column on hilchos Shabbos, where I learn something each week anew. I never knew how much I didn’t know, and it scares me to think of how much I’ve been transgressing on the seemingly little things! Thank you for the important awareness and the clear and detailed manner in which it is written. This column has truly made a difference in my Shabbos. S.H.

Parshas Terumah By: Malka Schneps

Living as a frum Yid requires tremendous dedication beyond what one might think possible. The Torah demands that we dig deep into every resource we have and give more than we think is feasible. We are commanded, “V’ahavta es Hashem Elokecha b’chol l’vavcha uv’chol nafshecha uv’chol me’odecha” (Devarim 6:5). We must not hold back any part of our hearts, our souls or any of our physical resources. In leading Yiddishe lives, we are repeatedly asked to perform tasks that we might otherwise deem impossible, from paying tuition and other expenses involved in raising large families, to the cost of yomim tovim, to the time commitments involved in davening with a minyan. Is it really possible al pi derech hateva to do what we do? And yet… we somehow do it. Parshas Terumah details the building of the Mishkan and its keilim. Many tasks involved in the construction and moving of the Mishkan Hashem would be physically impossible to complete. For example, Moshe was physically unable to make the Menorah, yet he was commanded to create it. The Aron was too heavy to be carried, yet we were commanded to carry it. The wallboards of the Mishkan were too heavy to be lifted into place, yet Hashem instructed Moshe to extend his hand to the boards to lift them. At the same time, we see that all these tasks and more were successfully performed — but not without siyata d’Shmaya. Hashem told Moshe to throw the gold into the fire, and the Meno-

60 / THE MONSEY VIEW

rah formed itself (Rashi on Shemos 25:31). The Gemara (Sota 35a) explains that when the Levi’im went to carry the Aron Kodesh, the Aron instead carried itself and them as well. And when Moshe stretched out his hands to lift the wallboards, they stood up on their own (Shemos 39:33). What do all of these examples have in common? In each one, people were given mitzvos that seemed impossible to perform, but that did not stop them from trying. When they exerted their effort, Hashem interceded and completed the job for them. Just as success in gashmius requires siyata d’Shmaya, success in ruchnius requires siyata d’Shmaya as well. We are not responsible for the outcome of our efforts in gashmius or in ruchnius, but we are responsible for using our bechirah to do hishtadlus. The outcome is always in Hashem’s hands alone. It says in Pirkei Avos (2:16), “It is not incumbent upon you to finish the task, but neither are you free to absolve yourself from it.” We see throughout the Torah that when people stretch themselves beyond their physical abilities in an effort to do what is right, Hashem helps them in ways that are beyond natural. It would be impossible for the Bnei Yisroel to walk or swim through the yam suf with their infants, the elderly, and all of their possessions, yet Nachshon ben Aminadav walked straight in. When he reached the point at which he would drown, Hashem split the sea. When Basya reached out her hand to save the

baby Moshe, surely she could see that there was no way she could reach him — yet she reached out anyway. She did as much as she was physically able to do, and Hashem granted her success. The Midrash (Bamidbar Rabbah 15:4) states that when Moshe Rabbeinu struggled to make the Menorah, Hashem showed him an image of what the Menorah should look like. Moshe Rabbeinu was still unable to make the Menorah, so Hashem commanded him to throw the gold into the fire, and the Menorah came out complete. The Sfas Emes asks why Hashem showed Moshe the image of the Menorah in the first place — surely Hashem knew that Moshe would ultimately be unable to make it. The Sfas Emes explains that it was necessary for Moshe to see the Menorah so that he should yearn for it. Once Moshe was able to yearn for the Menorah, Hashem helped him and made the Menorah for him. Hashem places tzaddikim in every generation, giving us a vision of what to yearn for in our own personal growth. Without an image of what it is we should be striving for, we cannot properly yearn for it. We should take advantage of our close proximity to the tzaddikim among us and do our best to see and observe them to the extent that we can. If we observe their avodas Hashem, it will hopefully instill a yearning in our own hearts, and then we might be zocheh to siyata d’Shmaya to grow in our own avodas Hashem as well.

Extreme Temperatures a Forecast for a Plethora of Potholes With temperatures in our area vacillating from the negative numbers to near 60 in less than a week, local officials are predicting plenty of potholes in our future. Last week’s polar vortex brought bone-chilling cold, freezing pipes and caused school delays. Unseasonable highs in the mid-fifties have brought welcome relief to our area this week, but the drastic changes, combined with water on the ground, create the perfect conditions for potholes, reported The Journal News. Temperatures are expected to be below freezing by this weekend. The sudden temperature drops may bring with them health problems, particularly for those with respiratory problems. Westchester County Health Commissioner Dr. Sherlita Amler explained that a sudden change from cold temperatures to warm is much less of a concern than a shift from warm to cold. “Cold air is very dry and it causes mucus in our airways to lose moisture,” explained Dr. Amler. “This is hard on people with respiratory issues, especially asthmatics.” Dr. Amler recommended using a saline spray to combat nasal dryness as well as a scarf to keep the nose and mouth covered.

This week’s warm temperatures on Monday and Tuesday may have been unseasonal, but they were not record breaking. Highs of 65 and 68 in the Hudson Valley were recorded on those days in 1991. Whether or not the rest of winter will be a warm one remains to be seen. If Punxsutawney Phil and Staten Island Chuck — two furry critters whose annual Groundhog Day predictions are made on February 2 based on their shadows — are to be believed, spring will be coming early this year.

New Director of Fire and Emergency Services Announced Nine months after Gordon Wren, Jr., retired as head of Rockland County’s Fire and Emergency Services, his successor has been named by County Executive Ed Day. Chris Kear, who has served as deputy fire coordinator under Wren since September 2013, was chosen from a field of nine candidates who were thoroughly vetted by a group of five local professionals with knowledge and experience in a variety of fields, including emergency preparedness, police and 911 services. The top three candidates were presented to Day who named Kear to the position, which pays an annual salary of $110,377. Kear told The Journal News that he first joined the fire department as a volunteer when he was 18 years old. Now 50, Kear served as chief of Hillcrest Fire Company #1 from 2007 to 2009 and as director of the Rockland County Fire Chiefs Association from 2011 to 2015. He has also performed fire inspections for the villages of Montebello,

66 / THE MONSEY VIEW / February 6, 2019 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484

Wesley Hills and New Hempstead and spent 20 years working as a firefighter in Greenwich, Connecticut. “I have always said that next to my family, that’s the best decision I ever made,” said Kear. “My life is surrounded by the fire services. This has been my path. I definitely have a passion for it.” Kear hopes to build up Rockland’s all-volunteer fire departments and plans to set up procedures to reduce false alarms, review the county’s emergency preparedness plan, conduct county emergency drills, and update the Fire Training Center in Pomona, which would include improving the facility and offering new classes. Day praised Kear for his abilities, saying, “Chris knows how to bring people together, how to work with all the separate departments and services to prepare for the worst. Chris is highly qualified, and we expect him to bring great success to his new position.”

Is Motivation The Answer To Your Health Problem? Motivation is one of those things that seems to take the blame of why many don’t/can’t lose weight. When discussing motivation we talk about it as if it is something that will make us invincible. Without motivation nothing is going to happen; with it we can move mountains. This leads us to believing that one day, all of sudden, you are going to wake up bursting with energy! New inspiration! With an unstoppable drive to take care of your health!

When you ask most people why they started on their health program they normally say it has something to do with a whiff of inspiration which sparked the desire to want to go ahead and lose weight. To take care of their health once and for all. Without putting too much consideration into it they start on a “diet” believing that this time they got it. This time they are going to stick to it no matter what. As things get harder to stick to (as they always do) the results start to show up less and less.

Is this true? Is motivation really the missing component to your success story?

That rush of inspiration they had in the beginning quickly diminishes.

In order to write this piece I decided to look up the definition of motivation. My findings really helped me understand and I’m hoping it will do the same for you.

The reason for not sticking to the diet becomes much stronger than sticking to the diet. That’s about the time the diet is over.

mo·ti·va·tion - noun - a reason that one has for doing a particular act. Motivation isn't some sort of secret ingredient that is magically going to make you a super person. Motivation is just a reason for the action you take.

When we discuss motivation as something that super charges us we are confusing motivation with confidence. Confidence is built by committing to yourself and sticking to what you said you are going to do.

The question arises, do you have a reason to take care of your health?

The more you stick to the commitments you make in your life, especially when you don't feel like sticking to them, the more confident you become.

If you do is it stronger than the reasons for you not to take control over your health?

As your confidence in yourself builds so does your chance of sticking to the program.

It is very easy to think to yourself, sitting down on a restful Shabbos afternoon reading the Monsey View, “Of course I have a good reason to take care of my health and of course it is stronger than not taking care of my health.”

A lot of people are aware of this. In fact the most popular thing I hear is, “Once I start on the program and start to see the weight go down I will become motivated to continue on the diet.”

But the test isn't here. It isn't now. The test is when you are wrapped up in the moment. When you’ve just come home from a hectic day at work — The family needs your attention — The house is a mess, you can’t even think straight and your exercise routine sheet is hanging on your fridge. The only thing you want to do is kick your feet up on the couch and give yourself the well deserved break. Now. Here. In this moment is your reason for taking care of your health and doing the right thing stronger than doing what you want to do?

Banking your success of your program on motivation and hoping that you’ll acquire more motivation by getting results is equivalent to putting the cart before the horse. Motivation is your reason. If your entire reason for losing weight is dictate to the numbers on the scale I’m sorry to say you are in trouble. The scale is a tool to help you be aware of how you are doing in the program. It shouldn't be everything. It is just an indication. FACT - The number on your scale will vary given the time of day, the clothes you wear, the amount of water consumed within that day and the like. If your motivation (your reason for sticking to the plan) is based on a number that can be altered by so many different variables, what is the chance of you striking to the plan?

To give yourself the winning chance of actually transforming your life there is some work that you would want to consider doing before choosing your program. At the end of the day if you don't have a reason to stick to your program there is no way you’ll actually stick to it. Trying to be healthy is hard enough. Doing it for the sake of doing it is not going to be strong enough to help you keep to your program. First, think about your reason for embarking on a health program. Now, when I normally tell this to people the answer I get is, “I have to take care of my health, that is my reason for beginning on the diet.” Believing that you have to take care of your health — although true, can sometimes be the very thing that gets in the way of taking care of your health (irony in that!). We as humans love to have autonomy. Love to do things because we want to do it. Taking care of your health because you have to and then coming home and wanting to have the piece of cake. Our wants will always override the haves. So a good way to think about the question above is to start off with the assumption that you don't need to take care of your health. The truth is you don’t. No one can make you take care of your health. No one can force you to eat healthy meals. No one can force you to exercise. By recognizing that health is something that you can or can not take care of you recognize it is solely a choice. It is your choice. Instead of thinking that I have to take care of my health because I have to we now give the brain an opportunity to think in terms of what you want. When you start to think about what you want you can find a really motivating reason to why you want to do the program. At the Smith System we work with each one of our clients to help them find their true motivation. Their real WHY. We support and hold clients accountable to sticking to a plan that is right for them. This gives each one of our clients the best chance to stick to the plan and achieve their goals.

The Many Roles of the Roll So much to be done with gefilte fish!

BY: RIVKY WEISS You’re late for supper and frantically searching the freezer for some nonexistent foodstuff, but the only item meeting your futile search is a slippery roll of gefilte fish, the one you effortlessly drop into boiling water as part of your Erev Shabbos prep. You stuff it back with an annoying shove and shut the freezer door. But wait! It may be time you learn what this frozen wonder can do for your dinner plate.

In this recipe, I tweaked my grandmother’s classic tuna knish recipe and created one with an unusual filling in two different flavors. Both versions came out tasting great. Try them both, and you be the judge!

Knish Roll

INGREDIENTS 1 roll gefilte fish, slightly defrosted

DOUGH ¼ cup oil

2 cups flour

5 oz. (10 T.) water

1½ tsp. baking powder

1½ tsp. vinegar

1 tsp. salt

FOR HERB PESTO 10 cubes B’gan dill (or another herb) ½ tsp. salt

2 T. oil

6 T. ground almonds

FOR MAYO DRESSING 2 T. ketchup 2 T. mayonnaise

72 / THE MONSEY VIEW

2 T. mustard

DIRECTIONS 1. Measure oil, water and vinegar into mixing bowl. Add dry ingredients and knead lightly until sticky dough forms. 2. Press dough into rectangle on a sheet of baking paper. Dough should be length of gefilte fish roll one way, and twice that length the other way. 3. Mix ingredients for your choice of flavor and spread over dough. 4. Cut dough in half along shorter side so you have 2 squares of dough. 5. Unwrap fish and slice in half lengthwise (to make 2 long semi-circles). Place each half cut (flat) side up on dough. Wrap two sides of dough over fish, overlapping dough. Flip roll over so seam is underneath. 6. Smear a bit of oil onto rolls, and bake in an oven preheated to 350° for 50 minutes, or until lightly browned. Allow to rest before slicing. 7. Serve at room temperature.

The kitchen cabinet is open. You reach for the black pepper, but…wait! It isn’t there. Spinning the Lazy Susan, you scan the spice rack quickly. Where could the black pepper be? Has someone taken the spice from its spot? Well, if it isn’t in its place, someone must have left it somewhere… Suddenly, as the rack continues to swivel, the ground pepper jumps out at you! So, it was there all along! Just where it belongs… You have just experienced the truth of the Midrash, “Hakol b’chezkas sumin ad she’Hakadosh Baruch Hu meir es eineihem — all are presumed blind until Hakadosh Baruch Hu enlightens their eyes!” These words may sound familiar to you, if you’ve ever recited “Amar Rebbi Binyamin…” when searching for a lost item. An object, a shidduch, a yeshuah — it might just be right under your nose, but you won’t see it until Hashem opens your eyes… and behold, it is in clear view!

Amar Rebbi Binyamin What is the significance of these words, and what turned them into a popular segulah for finding lost items? The Midrash Rabbah in Bereishis discusses Hagar and the way that she found a well of water. Hagar was not blind, nor did Hashem suddenly create the well for her after she cried for water. Hakadosh Baruch Hu simply opened her eyes so she could actually see the well that had been right there from the start.

The pasuk specifically uses the uncommon term, “Vayifkach Elokim es eineha — and Hashem opened her eyes” (Bereishis 24:19), to demonstrate to all of mankind that even with two functioning eyes, one cannot see anything until Hashem permits and enables them to see it. As a segulah to find something that is escaping our sight, we repeat the Midrash, “Amar Rebbi Binyamin,” affirming our belief that we can only perceive that which Hashem enables us to see. These words are followed by “Eloka d’Meir aneinu,” repeated three times, and is often said while giving tzedakah.

Eloka d’Meir Aneinu Have you ever wondered why nearly every pushka makes mention of Rebbi Meir Baal Haness? The Baal Shem Tov, among others, discusses giving tzedakah l’ilui nishmas Rebbi Meir Baal Haness as a zechus for all kinds of yeshuos. It is particularly singled out as a segulah for finding lost items. Reb Meir proclaimed that he would personally intervene on behalf It might just of anyone who be right under gives tzedakah for the poor of your nose, but Eretz Yisrael you won’t see in his zechus. This explains it until Hashwhy so many em opens your tzedakah organizations in eyes… and Yisrael behold, it is in Eretz use the title, clear view! “Tzedakas Rebbi Meir Baal Haness.” Throughout the generations, many yeshuos have been attributed to this holy Tanna by Yidden who have given tzedakah and implored Rebbi Meir’s zechusim. Why Rebbi Meir? Rebbi Meir was married to Beruriah, the daughter of Reb Chanina ben Tradyon. When Reb Chanina was brutally executed by the Romans for teaching Torah, as one of the Asarah Harugei Malchus, one of his daughters was also captured. Beruriah

begged her husband, Reb Meir, to help save her sister. Armed with a hefty bribe, Reb Meir approached the guard. Fearing punishment from the government, the guard did not want to release Beruriah’s sister. Reb Meir told him that should he be caught, the guard must simply say, “Eloka d’Meir aneinu — G-d of [Reb] Meir, answer me!” and he would be spared. To prove the potency of these words to the skeptical guard, Reb Meir incited menacing watchdogs. The dogs rushed to attack Reb Meir, but he calmly said, “Eloka d’Meir aneinu,” and the dogs retreated without harm. Seeing this, the guard gave the daughter of Reb Ever since Chanina ben Tradyon over that time, the to Reb Meir. The Chida states that when we say these age-old words, we hope to empower the lofty intentions behind Reb Meir’s original utterance. A noted few are granted the power and privilege to continue to safeguard and effect yeshuos even after their passing. Reb Meir, whose everlasting zechus assists any Yid who invokes his name, was put to rest in the upright position as a sign that he is always standing ready to help us… Aside from various life-altering salvations that people implore “Eloka d’Meir aneinu” for while contributing tzedakah, it has become widely accepted to ask for the simple, too — for help in locating lost items — in the zechus of Reb Meir Baal Haness.

The Tzaddik of Alik Invoking the name of a tzaddik carries tremendous power. Here’s another tzaddik who, at the mere mention of his simple reliance on Hakadosh Baruch Hu, can effect zechusim. Many have found that repeating the following story, l’ilui nishmas Reb Hersh Leib m’Aliker, to someone who has lost something is mesugal that he find it. As a teenager, the tzaddik Reb Hersh Leib of Alik was very short. His parents were concerned that he would have a difficult time finding a shidduch. Reb Hersh Leib himself was not worried, but seeing his parents’ angst, he decided to daven. “Hashem,” he said, “You make short people and You make tall people. I’m sure it wouldn’t bother You if I were tall, too.” A miracle occurred and he

It’s Thursday noon, and I connect to the family teleconference to participate in the weekly Shabbos cooperative cookathon with my sisters. “So, where do I start?” Ruchy asks. “I need to cook, wash laundry, finish up some work-related stuff, go to the grocery, return items to my neighbor, and I just don’t know what to do first. Why can’t I focus on one thing at a time without everything pulling me at once?” “Because you’re a scatterbrain,” I say, “just like the rest of us. And I actually need your help. Can anyone help me put together a list of ten things that classify a person as scatterbrained?” Everyone has a lot to say!

98 / THE MONSEY VIEW / February 6, 2019 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484

“Being scatterbrained is having to turn on a timer to remember that you’re supposed to do something, even if it’s just five minutes later,” Chaya is quick to reply. “And then,” Shaindy says, “when the timer rings, you won’t even remember why you had set it in the first place!” Oh, yes. “It happens so often that I call someone, and by the time they pick up...” Malya chimes in, “I don’t remember whom I had called. And obviously, it’ll be the husband or son who takes the call. And I fumble and mumble, hoping my memory will come back.” “You know when you’re ready to leave the house in the morning,” says Chaya, “and you’re so excited you’re running on time, and then suddenly you remember, Oh! I was gonna put up supper. And you’re quickly starting to prepare the chicken in the Crock-Pot, but you find yourself dashing to the laundry room to put in that load that you wanted to soak until you’ll return. And you’re grabbing the baby’s bottle, stuffing it into the bag. And then you remember you also wanted to make a stop to drop off your sheitel to be washed. But breakfast! You must eat something before you leave. Milk is borrowed from the neighbor (because you forgot to buy some when you were at the grocery), and suddenly the clock has moved way too close to school dismissal time and not only are you still home, but your supper is not even done.” Everyone laughs and adds their own versions. “Oh, and don’t forget,” Chaya says. “When you want to put in the load you mentioned, you find one sitting there, washed some 20 hours ago, and now begging for a rewash!” “Huh?” Ruchy asks from the depths. “Can you repeat what I just missed? I was just reading a brochure that came in the mail…” “Weren’t you just saying something about putting up your kugel?” “Oh no, yes, I was!” “Hey, I have another one,” Shaindy says. “You know when

it’s Friday afternoon, and you’re rushing, trying to finish up your list, and suddenly you find yourself putting together a seven-layer cake, which had not been on the agenda at all until you came across that recipe when you were putting away the magazines while cleaning up?” “Oh no, no, hold on a minute. I smell something burning. The eggs!” I completely forgot I had been frying them before this little conversation started. “Yeah, that too,” my sister laughs. “It’s turning the flame on and letting the smoke detector remind you that it’s time to shut it off.” “Yanky was just three years old, when he’d sing ‘Amar Reb Binyamin’ to the tune of ‘Amar Reb Akiva,’” Ruchy reminisces. “I sometimes wonder if my sole tafkid in life is to bring an aliyah to Reb Binyamin’s neshamah. The amount of times I find myself whispering those words...” “Yeah,” Shaindy agrees. “I was thinking that Reb Meir Baal Haness should have a monthly membership plan special for people like us.” “The only way I remember anything,” Suri says, finding her voice, “is if I write it down. But then comes the challenge of knowing on which invitation, tissue box, or paper it is written.” “Is there any hope for us?” Shaindy sighs. There just may be.

From Chaos to Concentration If you’re a scatterbrain, you know what it’s like. (And if you’re not, you’re probably sure that you have just read an exaggerated account.) There’s a constant storm brewing in your brain, and that storm is reflected on your desk, too. You misplace things — often. You call credit card and insurance companies on a monthly basis for replacement cards, have your cellphone with you about half of the time and also forget little things way too often... You marvel at how others’ lives seem to be a straight path with things to do, when yours is a series of concentric loops whose dots you struggle daily to connect. So what is there to do? How can you stay focused when your brain is a tornado of ideas, tasks to do, and just random thoughts — and actually buckle down to accomplish something, instead of mindlessly hopping from task to unfinished task? I know what you’re thinking. Just don’t tell me to take a time management course, or suggest that I be consistent. I know, I know. You’ve tried it at one desperate point or another. It didn’t work. And frankly, you don’t want to change all that much. Yes, your mind is everywhere, but somehow it works for you, even though you would love to be a little more organized and focused. Here are some tips to help tame the frenzy.

Empty Your Brain Any time you feel overwhelmed or ungrounded, unsure of what to do first, spill your brain on paper. This is also a great exercise for every morning. Take all that information, and write down every bit, no matter if it’s an idea you have, something you must do ASAP, or a book you heard about and now want to read. Once you have it all down on paper, your brain is no longer working overtime to keep the information at the forefront in an effort to remember it all. You can now clearly focus on your brain’s contents displayed before you, organize it, and start to prioritize.

First Things First Draw up different columns. Title them “Must,” “Should” and “Would Be Nice.” Another idea for column names is “Today,” “This Week” and “Whenever.” That last column is so that you won’t be wasting energy and brain space on all of your grandiose plans you have from now until next year. Any random thought that comes to your mind throughout the day can go straight onto the list, in the correct column, so new ideas don’t have to take away your focus as you think of them.

Nothing Lasts Forever

Ground Your List

Look through the list, and assign deadlines to tasks. If something is flexible and not urgent, you don’t have to give it a deadline just yet, but set yourself up for anything pressing and anything you really want to do (even if it’s not important for work or home-running purposes). Stick to deadlines and get them off your list and out of your life. Too much on your list is overwhelming. You want to eliminate whatever you can.

Designate only one place where you write down everything. The list should be attached to a surface that is not portable, whether if it’s something on your fridge, a white board on the wall, a desktop planner, a list on your phone or computer, a task pane… Always write all of your reminders and to-do items in that one place.

Eliminate Distractions

Before you begin to work — choosing something from the priority column, of course, whether you called it “Today” or “Must” — first make your workspace one in which you will have an easy time concentrating. Declutter your desk or your work surface, whether it’s a kitchen counter, laundry folding area or your computer desk. Turn off ringers and notifications, and even close the door to the room so you can focus on the task at hand.

Break It Down and Focus

Concentration can be the primary struggle of a scatterbrain. Start small. Set the timer for 15 minutes and force yourself to stay on task for this time. After a while you can start aiming for 20 minutes, and then 30 minutes — but no longer. If a task requires more than 30 minutes, break it down into smaller segments until you have shorter tasks. And tackle one part of the task at a time. Hyperfocusing will ultimately hinder your ability to focus. During the time allotted to the task, don’t think about anything else you have to do. Concentrate on what you have to do right now and complete it.

Not All That Bad! Being a scatterbrain may seem like having a handicap that doesn’t allow for efficiency at work or a running-likeclockwork home. And you will often feel (and be told!) that you are disorganized and forgetful. But a look into scatterbrains reveals the flip side: Researchers who’ve extensively studied people of this nature and their accomplishments say that being a scatterbrain is not only a sign of intelligence, but is also a sign of a creative, or even genius, mind. The theory is simple, research has shown. With thousands of thoughts and ideas running through your mind simultaneously, and numerous cogs turning at once, there is an overlap of thought processes that increases productivity and creativity. For a person whose tasks and life are rather straightforward and predetermined, one idea is dissected at once — but a mind of someone going in circles, thinking about ten things in the same minute, is fertile ground for unrelated ideas connecting, sprouting wings, and being the basis for innovation. A very busy mind is better for the very same reason two heads are better than one. A meeting of minds as well as a meeting of ideas give way to revolution. For example, a painter who thinks about music as he goes about his work can inspire a certain style of art; cooking while contemplating the weather may just inspire a new dish; and dawdling while writing to daydream about nothing in particular might just the the basis for the newest bestseller. Jumbled thoughts “fighting” with one another lead to productivity of the highest level. Because if not for people who daydreamed while working, switched tasks at great speed — often leaving some unfinished — and knocked things around in a mind that went in circles, how many inventions would not have been in existence today?

102 / THE MONSEY VIEW / February 6, 2019 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484

Take Breaks Very often a wandering mind tells you that you’ve been at something for too long, and it’s time to rest. When taking a break, don’t dawdle on mindless work or distractions, or waste time. Turn off the computer, or sink, or iron, and get up from your desk for a change of scenery. Your break does not have to be long, and while a nap is a lovely idea, it doesn’t have to include closed eyes. Call a friend, take a walk around the block, go to the water cooler for a cool cup of water, or choose something small from your “Would Be Nice” list to enjoy. After a few minutes, you’ll soon feel refreshed and ready to tackle more of your work with fresh eyes and an alert mind.

Be a Minimalist Less is more for almost anyone, but definitely for the scatterbrain who gets overwhelmed by “stuff,” which can easily get disorganized. Toss everything you don’t need, whether it’s in the kitchen, your desk, or your bedroom. To avoid drowning in clutter or paperwork or emails, institute a “touch paper once” rule. The worst thing is for papers to pile up (even though the scatterbrain’s biggest claim to fame is that they can find a paper in the clutter within seconds). Once you’ve touched that paper, or email, or item, either toss it, take care of it, or add it on your list to take care of.

Make It Fun Anything exciting will make working more pleasurable and will make it easier to stay on track. Race with someone to finish work. Challenge yourself to finish a certain amount within a specific time frame or mentally stimulate yourself in another way to turn daily tasks into an adventure.

WORKING MEMORY

We may think of a child with an exceptional memory as the one who snags first place in a memory game, can rattle off the list of presidents with ease, and readily recalls the terms they’ve learned. But in the academic success of a school-aged child, memory is a key player in another area as well: executive function. Wait, what? Executive function?

106 / THE MONSEY VIEW / February 6, 2019 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484

Executive function is the way we refer to the mental processes that enable people to plan, organize and complete tasks. If a child has a good handle on executive function, then they will more successfully keep track of homework, deliver coherent answers to a teacher’s question, and reach goals that require abstract thinking and planning. Working memory is one of the three main areas of executive function and refers to the collection of information one is holding in one’s mind at any given time. Effective working memory means holding a combination of information long enough to process thoughts, stay focused, remember directions and solve problems. This is the reason working memory is linked to student behavior and success. The stronger a child’s working memory, the better the child will be able to process information and keep up in class, and here’s where we, as parents, can help…

WORKING MEMORY WORKOUTS Exercising those working memory muscles with fun games and activities are an easy way to raise a child’s potential in the classroom, so take advantage next time you hear “Mommy, I’m bored!” These games are also great time-fillers when on the road or when waiting in a doctor’s office, and remember — the more people who participate in the workout, the more entertaining it will be. Here are a few ideas.

WHAT’S MISSING? This game can be played with younger and older kids alike. Choose a number of small, random objects from around the house and place them on a tray. (For younger kids, three or four objects are enough, but more items can be added to the tray to raise the difficulty level.) Tell the children to study the objects on the tray, and while they do so, discuss each one’s purpose, shape or color so that they should have a greater chance of remembering each one. After a minute, tell them to close their eyes. Next, remove one item without their seeing what it is that you removed, and ask them to open their eyes. Can they tell you what’s missing? VARIATION For older kids, add more

objects to the tray, and ask them to look at it silently for a full minute. After the minute passes, cover the tray with a cloth and ask them to list or draw as many objects as they can remember. VARIATION

This game can also be played with cards that have an image (for younger kids) or word (for older kids) on each one. Show the children a few cards, and then remove one.

COIN LINEUP Take a few coins and line them up on the table, some with their heads up and some with their tails up. Ask your child to look at the lineup for a few seconds, and then remove the coins. Now hand the coins to your child and ask them to arrange it in the same order of heads and tails. For younger kids, start with three or four of the same coin, but for older players, raise the difficulty level by using as many as 10 coins and a combination of quarters, nickels, dimes and pennies.

THREE CUPS, ONE OBJECT This is a very popular game at events and carnivals, but there’s no reason you shouldn’t play it in your own home! Set three identical, non-transparent cups on a table, upside down, and while your child is watching, place a small household object under one of them. Now ask your child to pay attention, and slide the cups around, changing up their positions and shuffling the order. Now, can your child still point to the cup the object is under?

MEMORY TRAIN This game is best played with several players. Sitting around in a circle, the first person says, “I went shopping and bought‌ juice!â€? The player who goes next says, “I went shopping and bought juice and‌ an apple!â€? The third player says, “I went shopping and bought juice, an apple and‌ salt!â€? And the game continues, with the list growing longer and longer. Players get “outâ€? when they forget objects, and the winner is the player who is the last one to list all the objects correctly. VARIATION

Players may choose a scenario other than shopping to play. They can say, “I went to camp and packed‌â€? or “I went to a toy store and chose‌â€?

VARIATION

For added fun, the first player can think of something beginning with the letter a, the second can think of something beginning with the letter b, and so on. VARIATION

Older kids can play with numbers instead of a scenario. Each player calls out a number, after the numbers called out by the player before. This is much more difficult than the original game since it requires remembering something abstract.

WHAT DID I CHANGE? This is another popular game that’s most fun played with a crowd. Have one player come to the front, and ask the rest of the players to study him or her. After a minute, ask the first player to leave the room and change something about their appearance. They can either untuck their shirt, switch their watch from one hand to the next, etc. Now the player should return to the room, and have the rest of the players guess what changed!

Make the learning multisensory. When asking your child to remember a list of five objects, ideas or things to do, have them write it down to see it, repeat it loudly to hear it, and perform a physical motion repeatedly while reciting the list to actually feel each one. For more intense practice, teach concepts in rhymes and song — since the brain tends to remember things that are matched to patterns and music — and use visual aids. Color is another key to visual learning. While the brain filters out much sensory information, color is one sensory experience that can more easily access the mind. Encourage active learning. Encourage your child to ask questions and discuss relevant ideas with them. Ask them for their opinion and what they think about it, and have them offer their own examples. This practice of engagement will ensure that your child is absorbing the information on a deeper level. Help your child make connections. When your child is learning about various concepts, have them connect new concepts to words or ideas they already know. This will also encourage a deeper level of understanding of the new material.

SPEECH ON SHABBOS | PART 1

Speaking about doing melacha after Shabbos From the pasuk in Yeshayahu that says “daber davar,”1 we learn that one’s speech on Shabbos shouldn’t be like that of a regular day.2 Based on this, the halacha dictates that it is assur to say, “I will do x tomorrow” if x is assur to do on Shabbos. This applies whether it is a melacha d’Oraisa, such as saying, “I will cook/write/drive/etc.,” or even if it is only an issur d’rabbanan, such as, “I will do business/buy/carry muktzeh.”3 Speaking about a forbidden melacha that one will do is assur even if saying it does not contribute in getting it done.4 For example, one is not allowed to tell his friend that he will be driving to the Catskills on the following day, even though saying it will not contribute to getting it done in any way. In fact, it is assur even if one says it only

to himself.5 In a case where one’s speech will help in getting it done, then he is also transgressing mimtzo cheftzecha, which is doing anything explicit in speech or action that will help him go about in his weekday affairs.6 For example, one tells his friend that he will be driving to the Catskills tomorrow, and then asks him to let him use his car. Besides for daber davar, this is also an issur of mimtzo cheftzecha, because it will have helped him drive a car the following day.

When there is a mutar way to do it The issurim above only apply if it is clear from one’s speech that he is going to do a melacha — but if it is not clear from the words themselves, but only because of other information, then it is mutar. One example is if what 1 Yeshayahu 58:13 one says explicitly can also be 2 See Pri Megadim, Mishbetzos Zahav 307:1 who says we treat it b’makom safek like a d’Oraisa and are done in a mutar way. In such machmir. a case, one is allowed to say it 3 See Shabbos 113b and Rashi there. According to Tosfos one should limit all speech. See Shulchan Aruch, even though both the speaker Orach Chaim 307:1. See Aruch Hashulchan 307:2 who says that the Shulchan Aruch went like Rashi and and listener know that he is added the opinion of Tosfos as middas chassidus. Tosfos’ opinion will iy”H be explained in another not intending to do it in the place. See also Shulchan Aruch HaRav 307:1 Mishnah Berurah 307:1 and Ben Ish Chai II Vayishlach 1. mutar way.7 This is because 4 See Shulchan Aruch Harav 307:1. Kaf Hachaim 307:10 and Mishnah Berurah 307:36 and Biur Halacha this is considered hirhur “v’chen lo yomar.” This is unlike the Aruch Hashulchan (307:22). (thought), which is mutar on 5 See Kaf Hachaim 307:10 and Mishnah Berurah 307:36. Shabbos, as from one’s words 6 See Shulchan Aruch Harav 307:1. it is not explicit that he will 7 See Shulchan Aruch 307:8. See Biur Halacha 307:8 “assur lomar.” do an issur. 8 Based on this, one can Even though one is not allowed to be mechin for the next day and washing dishes for tomorrow is say, “I am going to speak to assur, see Hilchos Shabbos B’Shabbos vol. 4 p. 61 who says that talking about something he will do that is only assur because of hachanah is mutar Reuven tomorrow,” even 9 though both the speaker and Shut Rabbi Akiva Eiger vol. 1 siman 5. See Mishnah Berurah 323:8 where he says that maybe l’tzorech Shabbos they were meikel. See Tehillah L’Dovid 323:6 who suggests that in the case of anything assur the listener know that he because of uvdin d’chol, there is no problem to mention that he will do it after Shabbos. See Hilchos will speak to Reuven over the Shabbos B’Shabbos vol. 4 p. 61 who says that because one can do it for Shabbos it has a tzad heter phone. Since it is not explicit (perhaps the reason why the Mishnah Berurah didn’t give this reason is because it is similar to the heter from his words that he will of doing melacha for a sick person, which as mentioned above, Rabbi Akiva Eiger says is not a reason to use a telephone, it is considallow one to talk about all melachos). See also Hilchos Shabbos B’Shabbos where he says that talking about something he will do that is assur because of hachanah only, is mutar. ered hirhur, which is mutar on 10 Shabbos. See Peleh Yoetz “Shabbos.” Similarly, one may say “I

114 / THE MONSEY VIEW / February 6, 2019 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484

will be washing dishes tomorrow,” because there is a mutar way to wash dishes (without hot water from the tap, and without using a sponge that can be squeezed out, and where there is no problem of hachanah), even though both the speaker and listener know he will be washing them with hot water from the tap, or by squeezing the sponge, or even by using a dishwasher. Since it is not explicit in his words that he will be using a sponge, dishwasher, hot tap water, etc., it is considered hirhur, which, as mentioned before, is mutar on Shabbos.8 It must be pointed out that this heter is only if one finds a mutar way to do it without performing melacha. However, one can’t mention a melacha that is permitted

in certain situations for a sick person whose life is in danger (like using a telephone, driving to the hospital, etc.). It would only be mutar to discuss acts that one is allowed to do even in non-extenuating circumstances on Shabbos.9 One is not allowed to speak about a melacha that he will do even if he adds “nisht um Shabbos geredt” (not to talk about it on Shabbos).10 Those who rely on this are mistaken. The purpose of this column is to bring awareness to matters of halacha. As with any halacha-related questions, consult your rav for a psak.

By: Shevy Hollander

Think your brain’s had its fill with the millions of tidbits it’s processed and stored? Never! The human brain can store an unimaginable amount of information, to the tune of 2.5 petabytes of data — that’s the equivalent of two and a half million gigabytes. To put that in more relatable terms, the hard drive to date with the greatest capacity can hold 10,000 gigabytes.

Have you ever found yourself in a room wondering what you came to do? This scenario is so common, because walking into or out of a room triggers the brain to forget. That is because passing a doorway serves as an event boundary, essentially closing the mind’s file of the episode and filing it away, thereby telling your working memory that it no longer needs to hold on to the information. Not only that, even visualizing yourself passing the doorway (thinking of going into the kitchen to turn on the flame, for example) is enough to make a person forget what they wanted to do!

Here’s why missing a night’s sleep to cram for a test is not a good idea. During sleep, memories are shifted to efficient storage areas within the brain, and our brains, overall, function a lot better with sufficient rest. In fact, researchers say that after learning something new, the best way to ensure retention is by taking a nap! Wouldn’t it be nice if schools would incorporate downtime during lunch break to facilitate greater mastery of materials learned?

Ask a man on Shushan Purim to repeat something he said or did in his drunken state on the previous day and he probably won’t remember. That’s because alcohol has a negative effect on memory, preventing happenings from being transferred to long-term memory. Case in point: An author of a novel who was struggling with a severe alcohol addiction does not recall writing an entire novel. He now reads it as a stranger, never recalling the time he penned it.

In one ear and out the other? That’s what studies say, at least for the 65 percent of the population who are visual learners! As a general rule, we retain a lot more of what we see and touch than what we hear. But more than any other sense, the sense of smell has a powerful link to memories. A smell will often trigger a flood of long-forgotten memories. Why is that? Since the olfactory bulb, the brain’s smell center, is directly connected to the amygdala — which processes emotion — and the hippocampus — which process memories — memories, smells and emotions are linked in an unforgettable way. 116 / THE MONSEY VIEW

There are three different stages of memory that function as a filter so that the brain shouldn’t be flooded with unnecessary memory storage. The sensory stage lasts a fraction of a second as the information is initially registered and perceived by the brain. Many memories won’t go past that. Next is short-term memory, where a limited amount of information is stored in the working memory temporarily. And only some memories will be stored away in long-term memory.

The short-term memory can hold about seven items for about 10 to 20 seconds. That is why seven-digit phone numbers can easily be remembered from when you get the phone number until you dial it. That is also why ten-digit phone numbers are divided into chunks — think 845.600.8484 — it’s easier to remember three groups of digits than a string of ten numbers. What if you still need the number in the brain after 20 seconds have passed? Repeating it to yourself will keep resetting your short-term memory.

False memories are a very real psychological phenomenon, one that almost everyone will experience at one point or another, when they recall with confidence that an event occurred to them when it never had, or occurred differently than it really had. When someone is questioned about an event he experienced, the questions themselves can often make a person remember it differently than the actuality. For example, being asked at what time the car “smashed” in an accident will automatically make the person envision the accident scene worse than it was. Similarly, being asked about how dark the suspect’s hair was will sometimes make a witness remember a dark-haired fellow, despite his having been a redhead! In fact, memory scientists claim that every memory that we construct has in it some inaccuracies, because humans are not recorders and will typically fill in gaps with what we think we must have experienced!

REMARKABLE MEMORIES Those with highly superior autobiographical memory (HSAM) forget literally nothing. They will remember exactly what they ate on May 15, 1992, and every detail they’ve experienced since. Sounds like a dream come true? Well, it’s far from that, say people diagnosed with HSAM. Forgetting is a blessing. We don’t want to remember every time we were hurt, every insult directed our way, and every negative experience we’ve had. Our brains are meant to store only certain things in long-term memory for a reason!

Eidetic memory (often called photographic memory in layman’s terms) is the ability to recall images from memory with high precision after minimal exposure. So what is photographic memory? That refers to the ability to recall pages of text or numbers in great detail after brief exposure. Do you think you may qualify for one of the above titles? While eidetic memory occurs in a very small number of children and generally not in adults, photographic memory has never been proven to exist. THE MONSEY VIEW / 117
