start the day right We have all heard the expression that ‘breakfast is the most important meal of the day’. There are many benefits to eating a healthy breakfast. It provides a boost of energy, kickstarts the body’s metabolism, and has shown to prevent overeating on unhealthy snacks and high-calorie lunches. For growing children, a healthy breakfast helps their bodies develop and MILK makes sure that they have the energy needed for the school day ahead.
Filled-out forms should be brought to Monsey Urgent Care.

HOW TO
CHOOSE YOUR CATSKILL VACATION HOME The
Shul
The
With various projects currently under construction in the Catskills, how does a family choose the right home - in the right development - and not experience buyer’s remorse in the future? For the chassideshe family living in the metro NY area, MOUNTAIN ACRES is the only sensible choice – for many good and compelling reasons. Please consider the following in its totality:
T H E P R OJ E CT The facilities and amenities of MOUNTAIN ACRES are in a class of their own. There will be a grand shul (under construction) with a mikveh and day camp facilities, two large outdoor pools with kiddie pools, a magnificent all-year indoor pool with a health gym and spa, all built on an intelligently designed site plan with most trees saved - and commensurate with our previous unique and beautiful projects in the Catskills, including; Alpine Acres, Lake Forest Estates, Twin Oaks Village, Laurel Ledge Villas, Evergreen Estates, Regency Estates, Luxor Estates, Vacation Village, Elm Shade Estates, Willow Woods, Woodlake Village, and Woodridge Estates.
MOUNTAIN ACRES is located in scenic and quiet Mountaindale (part of the Town of Fallsburg), and shares the same altitude and “air” as Woodridge which is less than a mile away. It is a shorter ride from the City (exit 112), especially in the summer when one can avoid the annoying traffic bottlenecks of Route 42, both in Fallsburg and in Monticello. MOUNTAIN ACRES is adjacent to the yeshiva of Mountaindale (year-round minyan) and to a beautiful walking trail which leads directly to the Center 1 kosher shopping mall in Woodridge. MOUNTAIN ACRES is one of very few projects offering homes which are stick-built - not cookie-cutter modulars or double wide-trailers. And it is the ONLY project where over 90% of its homes will be fully detached! MOUNTAIN ACRES offers its clientele – if they want to - the ability to customize any of nine different models being offered so they will not have to settle for any imposed builder's standards. The homes range from 3-8 bedrooms, 2-6 bathrooms, 1-3 stories, with many customizable floorplans designed to suit any family’s needs or budgets.
Houses
in
progress
One does not need to be rich to buy a home at MOUNTAIN ACRES. Our semi-attached duplex home, 1348 sq. ft. with 3 bedrooms, 9' ceiling, and 2 ½ baths sells for $189,900. But for just $215,900 you can have that same home built on an unfinished basement, with room for future expansion to 5 bedrooms with 3 ½ baths! Our eight other models are all fully detached and begin at $289,900. Financing available. (Taxes will be similar to comparably sized homes in other projects in Fallsburg with municipal water and sewer; maintenance projected at approximately $3500 per house.) Does buying a lesser home in a lesser project really make sense? When comparing apples to apples, we have the only tree!
MOUNTAIN ACRES is currently under construction and is scheduled to open for this coming season I”YH. Compare carefully and you too will soon be calling us to join our expanding heimische olam who certainly won’t be experiencing any buyer’s remorse after they move in! It's not too late for this year if you act now. Call Nachman at 845-434-2600 (nachmank@gmail.com) or Ephraim (w89stern@gmail.com). Offering by prospectus only.

OUR ANCESTORS MEDICINE I read alot about how our ancestors always had fermented foods as a part of their diets, and that it was the only way they could survive without today's medicine and antibiotics. I can now say I'm a witness, since I started giving my kids Fer-Real Foods sauerkraut and green beans, they have not had a strep throat or flu, it's truly amazing. Shoshana Lipshitz, Boro Park
My mother used to make raw combucha. As kids, we didn't like it that much, but it was still very beneficial to our system. When I saw Fer-Real kombucha with the flavors, I thought to myself I needed to try it, it has immediately become a staple in our household, as soon as we run out of it, my kids beg me to buy more, they love the fizz and we stopped buying regular soda.
Fermented vegetables was a tradition in our family growing up, I remember my mother making pickles & fermented tomatoes, we loved it and had some with dinner every night and we barely had to see the doctor, we were always in perfect health, so thank you for bringing it back to our diets! Boruch Klien, Lakewood NJ
My father used to make Borscht every year, he used to start right after Purim, buying the ingredients, buying a brand -new peeler & knife,we also had a special corner in our dining room where we used to make it. Fer-Real Foods Borscht brings back great memories! C. B. Weiss, Monroe NY

WE’RE BETTER THAN THAT (Re: Oops!, Issue 186) To the Editor, I think that to print an article sporting bloopers and blunders of our government leaders is beneath our dignity. We, members of the Am Segulah, are taught not to look for the failings in individuals and certainly not in our leaders. The media has gone wild, rubbing its hands with glee at any opportunity to bash and ridicule public figures. To say the least, it is in very poor taste for us to use this information for our entertainment. I don’t think it would meet the approval of our gedolim. There are many more productive ways for us to utilize our time and brain cells. Thank you for giving me the opportunity to express my views in this forum. A Disappointed Reader

(Re: Oatmeal Goodies, Issue 178) Thank you for a great publication! I love the recipes section and enjoy trying out new recipes. I have a question on the recipes titled Oatmeal Goodies, which call for oats, blended. Does that mean to measure the oats and then blend them, or to blend and then measure? I can’t wait to get a response and then try them! Thank you, Recipe Fan RIVKY WEISS RESPONDS: Thank you for the feedback. In all of the oatmeal recipes in that column, the oats should be measured first and then blended.

NOT JUST FOR THE KIDS (Re: Learn to Draw) My children’s choice of activity is for Mommy to sit down and draw pictures for them, but unfortunately, Mommy isn’t all that artistic and her attempts at drawing objects are often met with less than satisfied youngsters. I recently began using your Learn to Draw guides, and not only do my children love to watch me follow it step by step, but they are also learning to follow instructions themselves. (Perhaps I’ll even be able to step back and watch them draw sometime soon.) But the best part? The compliments that I get from my kids. “Wow, you are such an artist!” they gush. Thank you for this adorable, and useful, column! Finally an Artist

Dear Crest Court, You came into conversation at our Shabbos table this week, as we reminisced about the three weeks we spent on your block this past summer while our home underwent some renovations. We have such lovely memories of that time, not because of the location — though the dead-end was lovely for safety reasons; the kids had a blast playing there. It was the warmth with which your children welcomed ours, and the incredibly fine middos they displayed that won us over. So, thank you, residents of Crest Court, for the warm welcome and ever-warm memories, Ruchy Reese

Yeshiva Shaarei Torah
Building on the Past Planning for the Future
By: H. Green
Every yeshivah has its unique atmosphere. You get a sense of it as you walk through the doors. Sometimes it’s a deep awareness of the yeshivah’s storied history drifting into your consciousness together with the scent of worn seforim. Sometimes it’s an overwhelming feeling of raw energy that hits you with the deafening sound of hundreds of talmidim learning b’chavrusa. Entering Yeshiva Shaarei Torah’s bright and airy beis midrash packed with bachurim and kollel yungeleit, one is immediately struck by its palpable ruach of warmth and simcha. By all accounts, this positive tenor has been the definitive key in the thriving mosod’s four decades of harbatzas Torah. Yeshiva Shaarei Torah was founded in 1977 by Rabbi Berel Wein at a time when much of Monsey consisted of open fields and farmland. It was an offshoot of the fledgling Monsey Mesivta, which was established in 1968 by Rabbi Emanuel Schwartz and Rabbi Leibel Reznick, with Rabbi Gavriel Bodenheimer and Rabbi Dovid Nojowitz as rebbeim. The Yeshiva’s first location was on Viola Road in the old Bais Mikroh building, before moving to School Terrace and what is now the Viznitz Girls school. As the surrounding community grew, Shaarei Torah expanded along with it. Rav Zev Hoberman, zt”l, became the rosh yeshivah in 1979 and established the beis midrash and kollel. That year the Yeshiva also broke ground for its educational building on West Carlton Road. In 1985, the growing Yeshiva relocated to its newly constructed facility. In 1997, the Yeshiva’s dean, Rabbi Berel Wein, relocated to Eretz Yisroel and chose Rabbi Mordechai Wolmark, a graduate of Yeshivas Ner Yisroel and a talmid muvhak of Rav Nachum Partzovitz, zt”l, to assume the position of rosh yeshivah. Rabbi Wolmark, who had been serving as Rav of Beis Knesses HaGra and head of the Vaad Harabbanim of Detroit, arrived in Monsey at the start of a metamorphosis. New neighborhoods were springing up on Park Avenue, Olympia Lane and Mariner Way, and the first frum families had recently moved to Forshay and Wesley Hills. As the community grew, the demographics changed, and Shaarei To-

rah changed along with it. With the assistance of the menahel, Rabbi Dovid Katzenstein, and Rabbi Chaim Wein, who served as administrator, Rabbi Wolmark immediately set about making his vision for the Yeshiva a reality. As a third-generation talmid of Yeshivas Mir, Rabbi Wolmark was eager to adapt the Yeshiva’s mehalech to that of The Mir and the shiurim to R’ Nachum’s shitas halimud. He also began to plan for a student residence hall to comfortably accommodate out-of-town talmidim. In 2000, the Yeshiva hosted a chanukas habayis to mark the completion of the Yeshiva’s newly constructed student residence hall. The monumental event, which also included a hachnasas sefer Torah, was unprecedented in the history of Monsey as roshei yeshivah and rabbanim from around the world came to share in the simcha. With the likes of Rav Nosson Tzvi Finkel, zt”l, Rav Aharon Schechter, shlit”a, Rav Shmuel Kamenetsky, shlit”a, the Novominsker Rebbe, shlit”a, Rav Naftali Neuberger, zt”l, and Rav Malkiel Kotler, shlit”a, to name a few, it was an occasion that all those present will remember for the rest of their lives. The addition of the residence hallmarked the start of a new era for the Yeshiva, and its mesivta, beis midrash and kollel continued to flourish. The Yeshiva joined the ranks of yeshivos like Beis Medrash

Govoha, Chaim Berlin and Torah V’Daas by obtaining official accreditation. IN 2006, Rabbi Chaim Schwartz became the menahel of the mesivta, and in the years that followed, several of the Yeshiva’s alumni joined its hanhalah. Rabbi Schwartz envisioned a mesivta where every talmid’s potential would be tapped into and developed, a mesivta where talmidim would look forward to coming to yeshivah every day. The Yeshiva’s curriculum, which had always included a strong General Studies program, was complemented by educational outings and the occasional fun trip. In an environment saturated with warmth and purpose, the mesivta talmidim blossomed. Many began to stay to learn after night
seder, working toward a siyum on the masechta. Success breeds success, and the positive momentum only continued to grow. The mesivta’s siyum ha’masechta, celebrated by a majority of talmidim, became an annual event. The talmidim were growing in Torah and yiras Shamayim, and above all, were happy doing it. The wildly popular V’Haarev Na program is well-known today, but few are aware that it took root in Shaarei Torah in 2010. Rabbi Dovid Newman had been a member of the Yeshiva’s kollel and also served as the Yeshiva’s director of development. He pitched the idea for a new bekius method to Rabbi Wolmark, the Rosh Yeshivah. Always eager to embrace innovation, Rabbi Wolmark hired him to teach 12th grade bekius. By the following year, every rebbi in the Yeshiva had incorporated the method, and its basic concepts were adapted to Gemara b’iyun and other inyanim. Ever mindful of his long-term dreams for the Yeshiva, Rabbi Wolmark traveled to Eretz Yisroel to seek the guidance of Rav Nosson Tzvi Finkel, zt”l, the Mirrer Rosh Yeshivah. Rav Nosson Tzvi’s legacy of yeshivos dots the landscape of Eretz Yisroel, and those who identify as his talmidim probably number in the hundreds of thousands. Rav Nosson Tzvi took a personal interest in the continued growth of Shaarei Torah, whose derech halimud was modeled after that of The Mir’s. Rav Nosson Tzvi was keen to partner with a Yeshiva where Mirrer talmidim returning to America could seamlessly continue their learning. To that end, he handpicked Rav Asher Weiss, a talmid muvhak, to join Shaarei Torah’s hanhalah as rosh beis midrash and remained involved until his untimely passing. Rav Asher became rosh beis midrash after Pesach 2011, accompanied by a group of sixteen talmidim selected by Rav Nosson Tzvi. Rav Asher’s charisma, warmth and simchas hachaim are matched only by his lomdus, and within months
his daily shiur had standing-room only. By 2012, there were over 150 talmidim in the beis midrash alone, and the beis midrash was expanded to accommodate more seats. Many talmidim married Monsey girls, and a growing number elected to stay in Monsey to continue learning in the Yeshiva. Some talmidim chose to remain in Rav Asher’s shiur, while others officially joined the Yeshiva’s kollel led by Rabbi Yechiel Becher. The strong kesher and sense of belonging the Yeshiva’s alumni feel is apparent on any given night by the number of former talmidim who feel comfortable returning for Maariv, night seder or a shmuess with a rebbi. Today the Yeshiva’s hanhalah is a perfect balance of experienced rebbeim and younger meishivim. The other members of the Yeshiva’s hanhalah — Rabbi Yitzchok
R' Asher Weiss, R' Nosson Tzvi, R' Wolmark, R' Nochum Eisenstein
Heimowitz, Rabbi Dovid Kagan, Rabbi Yaakov Fishelis, Rabbi Moshe Wolman, Rabbi Eli Abraham, Rabbi Yehoshua Faigelstein and Rabbi Yossi Rubin — give shiurim and lead chaburos, and are available to talmidim who need hadracha. The kollel
yungeleit, many of whom have been learning in the Yeshiva for ten years or more, also serve as mentors to the younger bachurim. So how does a yeshivah continue to build on over 40 years of success? On Rosh Chodesh Adar I, the Yeshiva hosted an inaugural meeting for its new first-year beis midrash, which is slated to begin in Elul. It was with a sense of nachas and pride that the Rosh Yeshivah chose Rav Tzvi Elimelech Weinberg, an alumnus of the Yeshiva, to be its rosh mesivta. R’ Tzvi, who also learned in Philadelphia and in The Mir as a close Talmid of Rav Asher Arieli, is currently learning in Beis Medrash Govoha and recently published a sefer, Tzama Lamayim, on mikvaos. R’ Tzvi is uniquely suited to guide his talmidim as they transition from mesivta to beis midrash. Dynamic and full of life, he has a natural affinity for building a genuine rapport with talmidim. As a product of the Yeshiva and its rebbeim whose ruach and warmth shaped his own life, R’ Tzvi is eager to impart the same experience to his own talmidim. Two generations of talmidim have passed through the halls of Shaarei Torah. Its alumni have gone on to pursue vocations as varied as rabbanus and chinuch, to medicine, law and business. The common denominator linking them all is an abiding love for Torah and the knowledge that they will always be a part of Shaarei Torah.

WARMTH AND INSPIRATION ON THE MENU AT BNOS LEAH PROSPECT PARK MONSEY’S INAUGURAL TEA By: Sandy Eller It was a memorable morning on Sunday, February 10th as Bnos Leah Prospect Park of Monsey held its first annual N’shei Tea in New City. Bnos Leah mothers and staff members took advantage of the opportunity to spend two wonderful hours together at the home of Mrs. Chayla Kaplovitz, enjoying the beautiful décor, an exquisite brunch, a full program and an opportunity to build camaraderie. The warmth and vibrant energy that envelops Bnos Leah’s students on a daily basis was evident throughout the event which was organized by Tzaitel Friedman and Chaya Teitelbaum. Participants enjoyed an endearing video capturing every Bnos Leah student sharing what she loves most about her mother in adorable detail. In addition to showing the pure joy in each of the girls’ faces, the video also conveyed the school’s wholesome atmosphere and the close connection between the staff and students that serves as a vehicle for transmitting the beauty of yiddishkeit daily. After opening remarks by Chayla Kaplovitz who spoke about her daughter’s elation and exuberance as she heads eagerly out the
92 / THE MONSEY VIEW / February 27, 2019 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484
door to go to school every morning, Bnos Leah principal Mrs. Shoshana Rube drew on the inspiration she received while looking at various volumes on her own bookshelf. Beginning with the poignant title Shaping Eternity, Mrs. Rube pointed out the many opportunities in every mother’s life to mold her children’s ruchniyus and that of their future generations. She concluded with parting words based on the title Partners with Hashem, reminding participants that only with siyata dishmaya can we accomplish our goals in raising our families successfully. An artfully displayed Chinese auction offered prizes ranging from $250 in cash to an elaborate hostess package to a girl’s dream package including an American Girl doll, and everyone went home with a beautiful lucite Hadlakas Neiros as well as an official pink Bnos Leah pencil case filled with treats for their daughters. Participants agreed that while the ambiance was inviting and the program was uplifting, being showered with Bnos Leah’s trademark warmth and enthusiasm was a concrete reminder that they are part of a dynamic institution that has been providing a stellar education for
decades, and in just a few short months, has already become an integral and growing part of the Monsey community. The mothers returned home to their families buoyed by the knowledge that their daughters are thriving in a highly-regarded and much sought-after institution renowned for its high academic standards and solid hashkafos. Seeing the parent body’s exuberance and positivity was extremely exciting, noted Mrs. Rube. “In just a few short months we have seen tremendous hatzlacha with our incredible faculty and our beautiful talmidos,” said Mrs. Rube. “It has been extremely encouraging to see how quickly word has spread about our school and the remarkable number of strong, solid families that applied to our school for next year. We look forward to inspiring our girls and helping them maximize their potential, both as bnos yisroel and as future wives and mothers.” Sandy Eller is a freelance writer who writes for numerous websites, newspapers, magazines and many private clients. A Victory for Shuls in Chestnut Ridge After years of arguments and heated discussions, the Village of Chestnut Ridge voted last week to allow a three-tiered zoning law that would allow shuls to be built under certain regulations. The law was passed last Thursday night at Chestnut Ridge Middle School by the village’s five-person zoning board and reflects the changing character of the village, which in recent years has seen an influx of new Jewish residents, reported The Journal News. Chestnut Ridge Mayor Rosario “Sam” Presti said that the new law reflects the constitutional rights of the village’s Jewish population. “As new residents moved into the village with different worship requirements, these additional needs triggered a review of the law because the village has a legal obligation to accommodate all religious uses and to not unreasonably limit them in terms of their location or based upon a particular religious denomination,” said Presti. It took two years and numerous updates prompted by widely attended public hearings to formulate the new law, which allows shuls under three separate zoning categories. The first includes shuls in private homes, with a maximum of 49 people allowed. The second cat-
egory includes neighborhood shuls for up to 100 people in buildings that would not contain any living quarters and would require extra parking and buffers as well as planning board and zoning board variances. The final classification would be a community shul built on fiveacre-minimum lots and would require special permits and planning and zoning variations. All of the shul zoning requirements would be subject to local fire and safety codes, land use provisions and parking and traffic requirements. Opponents of the law have already vowed to challenge it in court, saying that it does not take into account local impact on traffic, storm water, parking, fire services and changes to the nature of the local community. They describe the new law, which allows unlimited shuls on any block, as “ludicrous.” With the new law passed, Presti is hoping that Jewish groups will drop a previously filed suit charging the village with violations of the First Amendment to the Constitution because of its previous ban on shuls. “As the practice of one’s religion is a constitutional right, the village recognized that its laws needed to continue to reflect the preservation of that right and to assure legal compliance in that regard,” said Presti.
Monsey Cheder Bus Crashes Into Tree During Inclement Weather The Ramapo Police Department is investigating a February 20 bus crash on snowslicked roads that led to some scary moments for a busload of children heading home from school. Yeshiva World News reported that the students were traveling home from the Lizhensk Cheder at approximately 3:30 p.m. when the bus slammed into a tree on a curve on Carlton Road West. Numerous local yeshivos sent children home earlier in the day because of impending snow and freezing rain that was expected to cause treacherous road conditions. Police, Hatzoloh and other emergency personnel arrived on scene to discover the mangled bus resting against a tree, its hood popped open by the impact, revealing the bus’s engine. While the bus suffered extensive front-end damage,

only minor injuries to the children were reported, baruch Hashem.

Dinner at Five
BY: LEAH STERN PHOTO CREDIT: C. TARKIELTAUB My Crock-Pot with its old-fashioned design and missing leg is a nostalgic piece. It must be at least 40 years old. My grandmother (whom I was lucky to have as a landlady) sent it down to me when I went back to work after my oldest child was born. She wasn’t using it anymore and wanted me to enjoy a warm dinner after a day’s work. Despite the fact that I’m always looking for something to balance the apparatus on and I would enjoy a larger one, it still hasn’t made it to my replacement list. Too many loving memories are at stake. Note: Each Crock-Pot has different temperatures. Adjust time and setting accordingly. THE MONSEY VIEW / 103
The blend of spices along with the pieces of vegetables give this hearty stew a unique and pungent flavor. No wonder it’s a family favorite!

4 garlic cloves
2 T. salt
2 cups chopped ripe tomatoes

DIRECTIONS For optimal taste, I allow the onions to cook in the oil on high for an hour or two before adding the rest of the contents, but feel free to omit this step. 1. Place onions and oil at the bottom of Crock-Pot. Set to high. 2. Add rest of ingredients and allow to boil. 3. Adjust setting to low and cook for 7 hours or as long as needed.

The Delight She was wearing her Shabbos best, holding a large tray of rugelach with both hands. Tugging at her skirt was a little boy, and another two children stood at her side, also dressed in their Shabbos finery. Walking together, they entered the little seforim store at the corner of Bar Ilan and Shmuel Hanavi in Yerushalayim. “What are you looking for?” the owner of the store asked as she stepped inside. The woman proudly responded, “I’ll wait here. In another few minutes, my husband will arrive. We want to select a set of Shas together.” As an orphan who was married off at the generosity of mere strangers, she explained to the store owner, she’d never had the opportunity to present her husband with this typical chasan gift. And so, in the close to a decade that passed since her chasunah, she had saved up coin by coin... “At last,” she concluded, “I collected enough for the entire set. Is this not reason for a l’chaim?” Overawed, the store owner offered to give her the Shas for free, but the woman refused. “I won’t give away my part of this simcha,” she responded.

Her husband entered the store. Grabbing him, the store owner took his hands in his own and began a little dance, and amused at the spectacle, other shoppers and passersby joined in. Soon a large circle surrounded the stunned man, and the impromptu hachnasas sefer Torah spilled over to the streets of Yerushalayim. With her warmth and excitement, this woman conveyed that the truest delight for herself and her family was her husband’s Torah. *****

The positive attitude, the esteem and the joy with which parents approach a Torah lifestyle is directly instilled in the heart of the household, enveloping the children in its warmth. Chana*, a young wife who recently married, shared, “Watching my older siblings marry serious bnei Torah and live this special life made me dream of building such a home of my own. I could hardly wait for my turn to find a husband whom I would be able to help in this heilige avodah.” The father of a family whose sons are each prominent talmidei chachamim and marbitzei Torah was asked how he had merited such progeny. “Probably the tefillah of their mother and the ahavas ha’Torah they witnessed in our home,” he replied. He used to actively involve his sons in his learning, demonstrating true excitement over a chiddush and delight at the opportunity to engage them in Torah discussions. The sweetness of Torah was palpable in their home!
The Privilege A number of years after his marriage, a talmid came over to his rosh yeshivah. “What do you do for parnassah?” the rosh yeshivah asked. Shifting uncomfortably, the talmid replied, “I am a melamed.” “You have no reason to be ashamed!” the rosh yeshivah chided. “You hold the keys to the gedolei Yisroel of the upcoming dor! Everything I was zoche to,” he concluded, “is thanks to my melamed who infused me with such a pride and love for Torah!” A chashuve woman, speaking of the inordinate value of learning, remarked that she acknowledges her appreciation for her husband’s Torah by standing up for him each time he enters the room. She lowered her voice as if sharing a secret, “I even stand up for my sons and sons-in-law! They may be younger than I am, but their Torah learning puts them many steps ahead of me…” Being the wife of a ben Torah is a zechus. It is

Ashreinu Mah Tov Chelkeinu… Women whose husbands dedicate their lives to Torah learning and teaching share moments that define their pride and delight in this special lifestyle. “So many times we were zoche to see hashgacha in parnassah… Whenever money arrives at just the right moment, I feel like I just got a hug from Hashem.” –Frady “On Shavuos, I feel like it is my yom tov. In our home, Kabbalas HaTorah is a reality every day of the year.” –Dina “I try to bake something special every time my child has a siyum. It makes me feel part of the simchas ha’Torah and gives the child the feeling that this is what is important to Mommy!” –Hindy “When my husband’s talmidim came up to our home on Purim, I realized that he has many more ‘sons’ than we are actually raising… What a zechus!” –Rochel Leah “I overheard my four-year-old nonchalantly commenting to his friend, ‘My Tatty is in shul all day,’ and it made me feel so warm and happy…” –Shaindy “My girls know that whenever I bake, I save the cake ends to give to my son — my little talmid chacham. They are not jealous and understand that this is a ‘prize’ for their brother who learns all day, and that shows me that they are proud too!” –Raizel
a joy, a privilege and an enormous responsibility. It is a role that cannot be treasured enough.
The Open Invitation When the portions of Eretz Yisroel were divided, Shevet Levi did not receive a nachalah. This was because Shevet Levi was sanctified to serve Hashem and to teach Torah to Klal Yisroel. Thus, they were not meant to busy themselves with working the Land. In turn, their physical needs were provided for directly from Hashem. In a famous discussion, the Rambam proclaims that this consecration is not limited solely to Shevet Levi; any man who resolves to disengage himself from the ways of the world and dedicate himself entirely to learning can join their ranks. He will merit having all of his needs tended to, just like the Kohanim and Leviim.
The Hashgacha In regard to finances, attitude ultimately prevails. Children will intuitively feel like they have everything they need when limited materialism is viewed with positivity rather than as a sacrifice. Parents have shared that it sometimes takes thriftiness coupled with creativity to seal the gaps, but that it is worth every effort. The Steipler stated that there is no promise that a ben Torah will be wealthy; however, one thing is certain: He will not lack anything from that which is destined for him due to the fact that he is

My Husband Is in Kollel “My husband is in kollel.” I mouth these words with pride They fill me with such simcha True happiness inside They bring to mind how blessed I am To live deeper, better, higher To partner in his learning And a share in Torah to acquire They speak of treasure houses Of merits we’ve amassed Through the sacrifice-cum-privilege In the present and the past They’re a window to a home Where children know with pride That this Torah atmosphere Is the best place to reside The words bespeak kedushah That colors every part of life The best gift I could ask for Is to be a kollel wife! And when a test or challenge Does inevitably arise I am adequately prepared It comes as no surprise Shouldering the burden Scrimping when money’s tight “Managing” is relative When my attitude is right I always see hashgacha Hashem’s constant supervision As my pocket and my plate He fills directly with precision Achas sha’alti, for this I beg And bear in mind each day To appreciate the present And, bezras Hashem, resume this way.

Ribbono Shel Olam in the midbar? After all, we were handed everything we possibly needed on a silver platter — from mann and water, to clothes and protection from the elements. Rav Yosef Rosenblum, zt”l, of Yeshivah Shaarei Yosher, explained that even though all of our needs were met, we did not have any “extras.” Luxuries are a contradiction to Kabbalas HaTorah. To set a standard, we were given everything we needed and no more. Relinquishing the extras was our chesed that Hashem eternally delights in. The truth is, Rav Rosenblum continued, passing up luxuries is not really giving them up. When someone spends a few dollars on a loaf of bread or buys a new suit for yom tov, he doesn’t krechtz over the money he spent; he is happy he was able to purchase his needs. When one realizes that Torah learning is a necessity that is keeping him alive, he won’t complain over the comforts that he is being “mevater” on. They are like pennies happily distributed in exchange for the pleasure of a Torah life. The ability to differentiate between needs and wants, and truly realizing that the desire for a Torah lifestyle outweighs materialistic rewards, makes a person feel fabulously wealthy.

“The roofer estimated $1,500,” Mrs. Gross told her husband. Shlomo* shook his head in despair as he hung up the phone. Earlier that day,
Eleg ance KJ Shopping Center, 51 Forest Road, Monroe, NY 10950 | 845.782.8630 Hours: Sun. 12:00pm - 7:00pm | Mon. - Thu. 11:00am - 7:00pm | Fri. 11:00am - 2:00pm
his tenant had apologized that he could not have the rent in time. Now there was this major leak in the roof that needed to be fixed immediately. How would he manage to make his mortgage payment? For the rest of the day, Shlomo sat at his desk trying to work, but he could not focus. The pressure weighed heavily on him. There seemed to be no technical solution. Then a thought popped into his head. My learning seder! Perhaps I should start again? If there is no quick fix in the fiscal realm, perhaps I need to fix myself… That evening, Shlomo went back to his old shiur. When the roofer came by the following day to begin his work, he realized that the job was not as major as he had originally appraised. The cost came out to less than half of the estimate. And when the tenant somehow appeared at their front door with the rent — on time, after all — Shlomo was speechless. Sometimes it may seem that learning is possible only at the expense of parnassah, but in fact, it is precisely the opposite! Profit comes directly in the zechus of learning Torah.
The Reward The Gemara says, “Amar Reb Yochanan, Kol hanevi’im kulan lo nisnabu ela... u’lemehanei talmid chacham m’nechasav.” This indicates that nevi’im were able to see the reward in Olam Haba only for the person who supported a talmid chacham. Then the Gemara continues, “Aval, talmidei chachamim atzmam, ayin lo ra’asah Elokim zulasecha.” The reward and taanug in Olam Haba that awaits a talmid chacham himself is so much greater that a human eye cannot see it — it is far beyond our grasp! Harav Asher Arieli, shlit”a, explains that if the Gemara states “ayin lo ra’asah,” it includes not only people, but every creation ever to be created! No creation has been able to comprehend the s’char! This extends to the vision of malachim as well. Even the highest-ranking malach cannot see the vast reward that is prepared for a talmid chacham! “If the value of a talmid chacham would be recognized,” Reb Asher points out, “it would not bother him that he is missing out on some physical pleasures, because he would understand that he is the greatest millionaire in the world!”

I ripped open the envelope. The bill featured an extra charge on my credit card for a lengthy longdistance phone call. Ten dollars for just a few minutes of conversation to an old friend on the wrong line. We have free long-distance minutes on the other line, but when the phone battery had gone dead, I’d called from the other line — and that had cost me ten dollars. I could have waited a few minutes for the other phone to charge or told my friend I’d call back another time. That split-second decision cost me.

I hate spending money unnecessarily, and the bill on the table was a jarring sight. I threw it out. And there! The expense disappeared. This is the power of mind over matter. You know about it, it exists. You ignore, it disappears…or so it seems — until you have to face the consequences. THIS IS PRECISELY the raison d’etre of Mesila, a non-profit organization dedicated to educating people about financial awareness and responsibility. Mesila lifts people’s heads out of the sand and helps them assume control over their finances. “No decision is good unless it is an informed one,” says Rabbi Ephraim Pessin, director of the Mesila division in Monsey. “The more information utilized to reach any decision, the better the decision will be.” This summarizes Mesila’s work. Mesila wants you to be informed and completely aware of your family’s financial setup so you can make wise financial decisions.
Mesila’s Goals Mesila was founded in 1998 by Rabbi Shmuli Margulies as a lending gemach in Eretz Yisroel and England. But Rabbi Margulies soon realized that the gemach was not helping anyone; the same people who borrowed money once kept coming back to borrow more. Trying to get to the root of the problem, he decided he’d offer a far better service by teaching people the importance of financial stability, and that has become Mesila’s goal. About three years ago, Mesila branched out and started servicing Monsey, Brooklyn and Lakewood. Education occurs on several levels: in elementary schools, junior high schools, high schools, mesivtas, and of course, with programs targeted for adults. Elementary school? Yes, Mesila starts with the young. Education for elementary school students doesn’t focus on specific financial realities, but rather on a general outlook on money. In the sixth grade, students learn that their parents work hard to make money; money is not unlimited, and you have to think well before you spend it. They also discuss peer pressure and the difference between needs and wants. In high school, where the students are ready to go a level higher, the curriculum encompasses the basics of budgeting. At this point, schools throughout the U.S., Canada, England and Eretz

The rule of thumb in budgeting is: Spend less than you make. To do that, obviously, you must have the facts in order and scrupulously recorded.
Yisroel are implementing the Mesila curriculums in their schools.* At the next and most central level are the adults. Newlyweds who reach out to Mesila attend two meetings for preliminary — and preventative — financial education. This is the easier part of Mesila’s job, when there are not yet ingrained faulty habits or major accrued debt. Trained coaches teach the couple that it is vital to budget each month and know exactly what’s coming in and going out. Both husband and wife must be on board; forget the oblivious spendthrift wife stereotype. They receive Mesila’s clear budget spreadsheets to facilitate organized tracking. This should set them up for future financial responsibility. The harder track is the older adults. Most couples (past the newlywed stage) contact Mesila following a trigger episode — perhaps they were notified by the credit card company that it will no longer extend credit, or they’re marrying off a child, or they’d like to buy a house but were unexpectedly declined for a bank mortgage. Suddenly, they realize that something has gone awry with their finances. A Mesila coach meets with them for an average of six sessions, where they go through the three-stage program of awareness, change and maintenance. The coach provides them with the tools to attain awareness of their complete financial picture, define their financial goals and pri-

orities, make necessary changes, and overcome any financial barriers to enhancement of income. They also learn to create a spending plan and deal with their current specific predicament.
Financial Fallacies Rabbi Pessin relays a disturbing fact: Most of the couples who seek Mesila’s help have accumulated between $20,000 and $150,000 in credit card debt! The credit card is, in Rabbi Pessin’s parlance, America’s “makkas medinah.” Credit card usage is attractive, because you can always pay later. Rabbi Pessin cautions that not only will that mean you have a debt you can’t really pay back, but you will also have a larger debt because you have interest to pay on top of the loan. Instead of being seen as a vehicle of payment, the credit card is sometimes regarded as a source of income! Rabbi Pessin doesn’t advise against using credit cards altogether — sometimes it is a useful solution when used with caution — but note the key words: sometimes and caution. Do you identify yourself in the story below? A man came to consult with Rabbi Pessin about his financial difficulties. In the course of their conversation, Rabbi Pessin talked to him about his work. This hardworking yungerman caught his ride to work straight from Shacharis every day. “What do you eat for breakfast?” Rabbi Pessin asked him. “Oh, I get a Danish and a coffee from the café next to the shul.” “And how much does that cost?” “$4.25.” “And what about lunch? Do you bring a paper bag from home?” “No, I get myself a sandwich.” “How much does a sandwich cost?” “$7.00.” They did the math together: $4.25 multiplied by 5 days and then by 50 weeks equals $1,062; $7.00 multiplied by 5 days and then 50 weeks equals $1750; total cost: $2,812. If he was earning $75,000 a year, which netted $50,000 after taxes, then he was spending over 5 percent of his yearly net income on his breakfast and lunch. This is just an offshoot of a cardinal rule in financing: Every cent adds up. More accurately, it is small
sums that usually add up the most! Food is one of those things that are constant, and therefore it grows very costly when each individual expense is even just a bit higher than necessary. All of the extra dollars here and there are money, too, and if they are spent on a whim, they will be sorely missing at the final tally.
Budgeting So how do you budget? The rule of thumb in budgeting is: Spend less than you make. To do that, obviously, you must have the facts in order and scrupulously recorded. Mesila’s spreadsheets are an excellent guide for this. I can’t resist but ask how expenditures should ideally be apportioned. What percentage of one’s income should be spent on food? How much on housing expenses? The answer is as disappointing as it is empowering. “Every family has individual needs,” Rabbi Pessin says. “It is every man’s choice and privilege to decide what his priorities are. There are no rules, except that every yes is essentially a no to something else. If you are nutrition-conscious and believe that your children need food supplements, you will have to sacrifice something else toward that end. Maybe your child won’t have a bike, or the family won’t have a second car.” It is also empowering because Mesila trusts you. They do not impose any set of beliefs or lifestyle preferences on you; they just offer you the tools that will enable you to live the life you want.
"No decision is good unless it is an informed one." Rabbi Ephraim Pessin

Following Mesila’s Path Mesila’s scope of activities is impressive. Mesila offers periodic seminars that tackle specific financial issues, such as prudent shopping or kids and money. Couples who’ve been through Mesila’s individual consultation are offered follow-up sessions. Recently, Mesila of Monsey also began a women’s support group for those who have completed, or almost completed, the program. Mesila has also published various literary resources on the subject, including the popular book Your Money and Your Life.
The Mindset Mesila’s views are refreshing and optimistic. “Parnassah is a gift from Hashem; accept it with grace. If you’re always feeling it’s not enough, it’s as if you’re throwing His gift back in His face.” Hashem provides you with what you need; acknowledge it with gratitude and use it well. And then, even in the world of dollars and cents, one plus one does not always equal two. Mesila is witness that people who are determined to live within their means, especially financially strapped kollel families, merit incredible bracha within their modest income. There are two kinds of bracha, Rabbi Pessin explains. There is a bracha of more, when Hashem blesses you with a larger income, and there is a greater bracha of blessing within the parnassah you already have — that somehow it suffices for all of your needs. MESILA is a firm but gentle guiding hand in a world of temptation, peer pressure and daunting expenses. Financial stability is a realistic vision — and Mesila will get you there. *Please note that Mesila’s educational materials are copyright and must be purchased through Mesila.

ommitment is a scary word. Being a spontaneous person, I can barely commit to a time arrangement, and when I do I’m usually late. So when I made the greatest commitment of my life and got married, I went in with an open mind. I knew I wanted a Torah home, which meant embarking on the kollel track, but my husband and I never discussed a time frame. Some couples go in saying they want to do this for a year, five years, ten years, and a few even insist on “lifetime,” not necessarily grasping what that entails. For me, the question was never how long we would do this for. What counted was that I married a person who loved learning, was inclined to learn and would learn as long as he could. Every kollel yungerman needs a partner — a kollel wife — who will support his learning. Someone has to sustain the household, and for a woman to shoulder that responsibility requires grit. I felt I had what it took. I was willing to work hard. I wasn’t a high-maintenance girl and was prepared to live frugally. For the first decade of our marriage, I held down a fantastic job and it wasn’t difficult to make ends meet. We felt comfortable, smoothly balancing our finances and even managing to build a modest nest egg. We nev-

er felt poor. But then, with the impending growth of our family, we decided it was time for me to move on. My children needed me home, and it no longer made sense for me to work. My husband and I agreed that I should stop working shortly. Sweating and trembling, I gave notice. Now what? We stood at that crossroads, completely lost. If commitment is scary, change is downright terrifying. “I guess I’ll have to look for a job,” my husband said forlornly. It was like sounding the death knell of our dreams. The prospect of my husband going out to work made my insides sour. Here was a serious talmid chacham, diligently shteiging for so many years, and suddenly — snap! — over? Sit in an office from nine to five? How could I do this to him? Of course, I realized the years he’d devoted to limud ha’Torah wouldn’t be lost. Once a ben Torah always a ben Torah, and even if my husband had to take a job now,
the years he’d spent plugging away at the Gemara had molded him into who he was as a person and what kind of environment we’d established in our home. It had been a spiritual investment with eternal rewards. But I realized another thing: I really, really didn’t want my husband to leave kollel. Altruism aside, I loved our lifestyle; I loved how my husband’s schedule aligned with the Yiddish calendar. How he wasn’t swept up in millennial junk. How he had the emotional headspace and physical energy to be a husband and father, unlike the many businesspeople I knew who arrived home at the end of each workday completely depleted. I didn’t want to give that up. “Let’s try to figure out a plan so you can stay in kollel,” I told my husband. “Charidy campaign?” he joked. But I was serious. I wanted to make it work. My mind brimmed with ideas. Maybe
there was another way? After so many years in the workforce, I’d acquired valuable experience and developed many business skills. I could easily get hired for freelance projects. We’d also started a small home business the previous year, and I had hope that it would grow so we could rely on that for an income. Maybe? Maybe. But for a business to grow takes time, and meanwhile, our monthly expenses were enormous. There’s only so far a dollar will stretch. Our baby’s arrival marked the end of my working and threw us into our new, frightening reality. From one day to the next, our only source of income was gone. At first, I was overwhelmed with the adjustment of a new baby and managed to stow my worries over our financial situation in the back of my mind. We had put aside funds to live off for this period, and for the first while after the birth we managed to stay afloat. But the months advanced with alarming speed, and fear took over my life. We had no source of income to speak of. It was a terrifying existence. I’d worked so hard for so many years, I couldn’t bear the thought of dipping into savings. Instead I started exercising my frugality muscles, learning to make do with less than little. “So this is what it means to struggle for Torah,” I told my husband wryly as I crossed bottled water off our grocery list. “No,” he corrected me. “You’ve been struggling for Torah all those years. You bent over backward so I could
Now, working an occasional odd job while learning to live hand to mouth, nothing was predictable except for the fact that Hakadosh Baruch Hu would never abandon us.

learn. Struggling doesn’t have to mean starving.” I knew the realistic next step would be for my husband to join the workforce. We weren’t ready to become pas bamelach people. How does that work anyway? What do you tell your landlord on the first of the month? Eat toast? My husband put out feelers. Like most avreichim, he had no marketable skills, and his chances of landing a lucrative job were slim. At this stage in our lives, an entry-level position wouldn’t cover our bills. Even if I’d come to terms with the fact that he’d have to leave kollel, it didn’t look like he’d be leaving so fast. For the first time in my life, my faith was put to the test. True, I’d worked hard for many years, but at least I never had to worry or skimp. My salary had been a source of financial security. When I shared this thought with my husband, he told me I was wrong. “That wasn’t security,” he said. “It looked like security, it felt like security, but it was Hashem’s doing all along.”
I released a puff of breath and packed my husband’s lunch for another day in kollel. It was a lightbulb moment for me. All along, I’d taken for granted that our bills were covered, that I could shop for the things I needed, swipe cards without fear. I’d relied on a paycheck that had been as predictable as the morning sun. Now, working an occasional odd job while learning to live hand to mouth, nothing was predictable except for the fact that Hakadosh Baruch Hu would never abandon us. We were in His hands, and that was the most secure place we could desire to be. And then we started seeing it, soft pats from Above. Our business venture began to look up. I released a puff of breath and packed my husband’s lunch for another day in kollel. Then the business nosedived. The familiar fears resurfaced and I was once again consumed by worry. I learned to buy what I needed and not a shoestring more. Our credit card bills dropped 75 percent lower than what they’d been before I left my job. It’s incredible to discover how little you actually need in order to live a functional life. Still, fixed expenses are fixed. How were we going to cover the month? “The same Hakadosh Baruch Hu who provided last month will provide this month again,” my husband reassured me.

I envied his faith. Both of us were in the same boat, but he never lost sight of Who controlled our lives and how pointless it was to be afraid. This — his unshakable belief that Hashem would provide what we needed — was the return on our “investment,” the years he’d devoted to limud ha’Torah. And then an opportunity came up. A big project, something that made sense for me and would tide us over for several weeks. I signed the contract and released my breath again. The relief was shortlived. Before I’d completed the first quarter of the project, something happened and the client backed out. There went that “security.” But before worry had a chance to seep back in, our business picked up again. That’s how we’ve been living for the past year. It’s a cyclone, riding the bumps, bracing for sharp inclines and relaxing as we whiz over the tracks Hashem has laid out for us. While it’s somehow always the first of the month again, we’re surviving. We’re living. We haven’t resorted to handouts. Do we know how our future will look? How we’ll earn our living? We can’t know, but neither can anyone, no matter how secure a job seems. So yes, I continue to wonder: Can my husband stay in kollel? Another year? Five years? Forever? I can’t know, only daven. We take each day as it comes, grateful for the time he can still devote to Torah study. Because whatever happens, this investment is unquestionably secure.

SPEECH ON SHABBOS | PART 4
We mentioned in previous weeks that from the pasuk in Yeshayahu that says, “daber davar,”1 we learn that one’s speech on Shabbos shouldn’t be like the speech of a regular day.2 Based on this, the halacha dictates that it is assur to say, “I will do x tomorrow,” if x is assur to do on Shabbos. This applies whether it is a melacha d’Oraisa, such as saying, “I will cook/write/drive/etc.,” or whether it is only an issur d’rabbanan, such as, “I will do business/ buy/carry muktzah/etc.”3 Furthermore, speaking about a forbidden melacha that one will do is assur even if saying it does not contribute in any way to getting it done.4 We also mentioned that there are times when one is allowed to speak about melacha that is assur on Shabbos, an example of which is talking about events that have already happened and are no longer relevant now, like saying, “I drove to New Jersey last week,” or, “I bought a house two months ago.” Mitzvah-Related Speech Another heter to speaking about doing something the next day that is assur to do on Shabbos is speaking about things that are needed for a mitzvah. So one is allowed to say on Shabbos, “I will write a sefer Torah, tefillin or mezuzah tomorrow.” However, according to some opinions, it is only mutar to do so if it will help in fulfilling the mitzvah. Examples would be a case where he doesn’t have ink and asks his friend to give him ink on the next day so he will be able to write, or if he wants to say it so it will push him to do it. L’chatchilah the poskim write that one should not do it unless saying it will help in some way in doing the mitzvah.5 Let’s look at a few applications of this halacha. Even though one is not allowed to say that he will handle muktzah after Shabbos because handling muktzah is assur on Shabbos, nevertheless, it is mutar to announce lost and found on Shabbos even if the item is muktzah because it is for a mitzvah.6 Even though it is assur to tell one’s friend to pick him up with his car after Shabbos because driving a car is assur on Shabbos, nevertheless, it is mutar to ask his friend to pick him up with his car after Shabbos to go and do a mitzvah. Even though it is assur to say where one bought something or how much he got it for if the one he is speaking
146 / THE MONSEY VIEW / February 27, 2019 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484
to is interested in purchasing it, nevertheless, if the item in question is for a mitzvah, like a megillah written by a good sofer, for instance, it is mutar. Even though on Shabbos one is not allowed to talk about the building or buying that he will do after Shabbos, nevertheless, it is mutar to ask one’s friend to come by on the next day to help him build his sukkah and buy the arba minim because it is for a mitzvah.7 One can speak to a talmid chacham about hiring him to be a tutor for his son because it is a mitzvah. However, one should not finalize hiring him and also should Yeshayahu 58:13

not discuss how much he will pay him because that is considered doing business, which is assur on Shabbos.8 The same applies to finding someone to teach his son a trade, because that too is a mitzvah — so that the son wouldn’t come to steal.9 Even though one is not allowed to talk about financial calculations that are relevant now or for the future, nevertheless, one is allowed to talk about financial calculations of mitzvos such as a seudas mitzvah.10 One is allowed to speak about donating money to poor people because that is also a mitzvah.11 As opposed to the case of speaking to a tutor about hiring him, where it is assur to discuss the salary, when it comes to tzedakah one can even say exactly how much he will give because it is not similar to a business deal.12
The purpose of this column is to bring awareness to matters of halacha. As with any halacha-related questions, consult your rav for a psak.

Community-Related Speech Things that involve the needs of the community are mutar to discuss even if they involve things that are assur to do on Shabbos. The reason is that they too are considered mitzvah-related.13 This includes discussing anything that can prevent a michshol or loss to the rabim.14 The extent of communal needs is not always clear, and therefore, one should run every specific case by a competent posek.

Beis Medrash Govoha, also known as BMG, or as the Lakewood Yeshiva, is the largest yeshivah in the U.S. and one of the largest yeshivos in the world.
Beis Medrash Govoha was originally established as a kollel by Rav Nosson Meir Wachtfogel, zt”l, and Rav Shmuel Schechter, zt”l. They started out in White Plains, NY, in the spring of 1942 with 20 avreichim (including the two of them). This was the first kollel in the United States.
When Rav Wachtfogel reached out to Rav Aharon Kotler, zt”l, in 1943 to lead the institute after Rav Kotler arrived to New York from Europe, he agreed to do so on the condition that they move to Lakewood and expand to a yeshivah gedolah. Lakewood at that time was a town known for farming, where poultry greatly outnumbered the people living there. The yeshivah opened on April 24, 1943, with 14 enrolled students. The kollel stipend was then $40 — enough to cover the month.
BMG is spread over 35 acres on four separate campuses. There are a total of 16 study halls and about 20 residence halls for students who dorm.
In 2016, the total number of students learning in BMG was 7,906. About 5,500 of the students are married.
Beis Medrash Govoha is unique in that a student can study any subject in Talmud or Halacha.
The learning in Beis Medrash Govoha is done in chaburos of 15 to 200 bachurim or avreichim who study the same subject at the same pace in chavrusos. There are about 240 roshei chaburah.
148 / THE MONSEY VIEW
All students leave their cellphones in the hallway outside the study halls.
The learning is divided in three zmanim each year. Winter zman is from Rosh Chodesh Cheshvan through zayin Nissan. Summer zman is from Rosh Chodesh Iyar through yud Av. The Elul zman is from Rosh Chodesh Elul through yud-alef Tishrei. New students start only for the winter or summer zman, and not for the Elul zman.
THE FREEZER When accepted to the yeshivah, students must sign that they will not enter shidduchim for the first three and a half months of the zman. Tu B’Shvat marks the opening of the “freezer,” as it’s colloquially known, and in the summer the freezer opens on shivah asar b’Tammuz.
TUMULT DAY The day chavrusos and chaburos are arranged, when students decide what they will be learning and with whom, is known as “tumult day” for the hullabaloo this creates.
YESHIVISH Yeshivish, often referred to as Yeshivah English or Yeshivishe Shprach (or Reid) is a dialect of English that includes hundreds of words and phrases specific to this lexicon. Yeshivish is primarily spoken by males from teenage years and above. Even if a woman speaks it, she’ll use a much milder version. • Commonly used platitudes are frequently expressed in Yeshivish. Think, shko’ach (the shortened version of the bracha “yasher koach”), baruch Hashem, im yirtzeh Hashem. • Many Yeshivishe words derived from the actual learning used in everyday language will be used colloquially and not quite that technically. Some examples are: al kol panim, l’choira, l’maisah and goirem. • The accent used for Yeshivishe words is similar to accents of Eastern European backgrounds, a notable phoneme being the “oi” sound. • There are some interjections unique to Yeshivish — think: Oy! Ooh-aah! Pshhhh! The non-verbal fist twist with thumb going from pointing down to pointing up is also exclusively Yeshivish. • Yeshivishe words will often get standard English morphology, which is seen both with suffixes and plurals. Yeshivah will usually be referred to as yeshivas in plural, as opposed to yeshivois, and verbs like daven take on standard English patterns, like davened, davening. • There are a number of Yeshivishe words and phrases calqued from Yiddish: bring down and tell over, as well as by used as the Yiddish bie. • Grammar in Yeshivish is also influenced from Yiddish, like when prepositions get dropped, in sentences like: I’ll be there at 9:00. I’m already frum for 10 years.
