MARK IT MILCHIG (Re: Sharing the Joy With Chocolate, Issue 190) The chocolate shells you featured last week were magnificent — definitely one of those recipes that I will clip and save and try once my calendar clears up. I wanted to remind anyone making this recipe, or any other milchig product, for mishloach manos to obviously mark their mishloach manos with “chalvi” to make sure they are not machshil anyone who will unknowingly eat it after a fleishig meal. (Re: An Off-Color Menu; Of Colors and Kashrus, Issue 190) I enjoyed your articles on food dyes and found them very informative. Way too much food coloring makes its way into my house and I would love to limit it, a resolve that was bolstered after reading your coverage that pulled back the curtain on the less-than-delightful origins of these enticing colors. One great alternative I came across are non-GMO jelly bears from Gedillah in purple, pink and red (naturally colored with cabbage and radishes) that my children are excited to have as a Shabbos treat. If anyone knows of more naturally colored items in fun colors, I’d love if you can share the information before my kids grow tired of jelly bears. S.H.

cover to cover, week after week. There is a disturbing trend I would like to air in a public forum in an effort to raise awareness of its ramifications. I have been casually told by more than one acquaintance that the most “cheap and practical” internet kiosk for anyone seeking to research, shop or view photos of a potential vacation spot is located in the local community center. Their computers are available for free, and the best perk, they say, is that no images or sites are blocked and no annoying filters are present. I dearly hope there is another individual in the Monsey community who blanches at the thought of such practice being the norm after all of the massive gatherings, warnings and raised awareness in our town regarding the dangers and pitfalls of the internet. Where is the heter for frum and ehrliche Yidden to shamelessly sit an unfiltered computer with internet access?! A particular young man, who learns in my husband’s kollel all day, mentioned that he often accompanies his wife to take care of shopping, etc., after kollel, since his wife needs to be “protected” by having a “shomer” with her at the computer… I don’t think it is necessary for me to elaborate on the irony of a woman whose priorities allow her to work hard both inside and outside the house to support her husband’s learning, and who later leads him right to the place of impurity, which an ehrliche businessman who follows his rav’s takanos would

A CALL FOR SAFETY I recently spotted a sevenyear-old school girl trying to flag her school bus on Union Road. She was doing so from the opposite side of one of the busiest streets in our town, where cars speed by from all directions. Thankfully, the bus driver noticed her, and I stopped to help her onto her bus safely, but I shudder to think what would have been if the driver had not noticed her. She was too young to make it safely to the other side. Parents, please watch out for your children’s safety! Name Withheld
DANGER AT THE DOOR I would like to let your readers know that there is a man collecting in our community who is behaving in a horrific manner. He rang my bell last week and when I answered through the intercom saying that I didn’t have any money in the house, I was treated to a stream of curses. It was a disconcerting experience, and very scary. Later in the week I heard of other people who’d had the same experience, one of them being a teenage girl. The man is clearly unwell. If you’ve had him come to your door, know that it’s not just you who has suffered verbal abuse at his hands. Parshas Tzav By: Malka Schneps
This past Shabbos was Shabbos Zachor, when we fulfill the commandment: “Zachor es asher asah lecha Amalek baderech b’tzeischem miMitzrayim... — Remember what Amalek did to you on your way out of Mitzrayim... You shall obliterate the memory of Amalek from beneath the heavens; you shall not forget!” (Devarim 25:17–19) We fulfill this mitzvah right before Purim so that the obliteration of Amalek comes right before the annihilation of Haman, a descendant of Amalek. What was the great evil of Amalek that caused them to deserve obliteration from the Earth? Rashi cites the Midrash Tanchuma regarding the lashon. The Torah states, “Remember what Amalek did to you… how he encountered you (karcha) on the way…” The word karcha has the shoresh “kor,” which also refers to cold. The lashon can be rendered, “Remember what Amalek did to you… how he cooled you off (karcha) on the way…” Rashi explains that the sin of Amalek was that they cooled us off in the eyes of the world; we had been burning hot in the eyes of the world, so they were afraid to attack us, but now we were cooled off. This change in the way the world perceived us made us vulnerable to attack. There is another explanation for the meaning of Amalek having cooled us off: Amalek cooled the fire of avodas Hashem in our hearts. In that sense, when we
66 / THE MONSEY VIEW
stoke the fire of that passion in our hearts, we fulfill the mitzvah to destroy Amalek. In fact, we can see this clearly using gematria. If we remove the fire from Yisroel — removing the letters aleph and shin — then the gematria of the remaining letters is the same as the gematria of Amalek.” It says in this week’s parsha, “Aish tamid tukad al haMizbei’ach lo sichbeh… — An eternal fire shall burn upon the Mizbei’ach; it shall not be extinguished” (Vayikra 6:6). Chazal state that if the meaning of these words were that a fire must burn continuously, then the wording would have been, “tamid tukad aish — a fire shall burn continuously.” The wording “aish tamid tukad” is a statement that the nature of the fire itself is eternal; an aish tamid burns continuously. We discussed in a previous article that we ourselves are each likened to a mikdash me’at, and the Mizbei’ach corresponds to the heart, the part of us that is most able to sacrifice. The Sfas Emes explains that within each soul is a hidden flame burning with love for Hashem. In line with the above idea, that the Mizbei’ach corresponds to the heart, it is incumbent upon us to keep that flame burning within us. How do we keep the fire burning in our hearts? How do we maintain a bren for Torah and for avodas Hashem at all times? Returning to the parsha, we read, “The Kohen shall kindle wood upon it every morning” (Vayikra 6:5). We must feed the fire in our
hearts every morning, day after day, by davening and learning Torah. We must never let the fire in our hearts burn out. Not only must we keep the fire burning in accordance with the idea of aish tamid tukad, but we must also do so in fulfillment of the mitzvah to erase Amalek. Amalek cooled us off. A cool heart feels detached and numb and does not feel a drive to serve Hashem. By feeding the fire in our hearts to serve Hashem with passion, we negate the damage they inflicted upon us and weaken their hold. Furthermore, we must feed the fire in the hearts of those who look to us — our children and our students — just as the Kohanim did on behalf of Klal Yisroel. Feeding our fire is hard work and can be daunting, but there is a reassurance in all of this in the pasuk “Aish tamid tukad al haMizbei’ach lo sichbeh… — An eternal fire shall burn upon the Mizbei’ach; it shall not be extinguished.” The Sfas Emes explains that this is not only a command to keep the fire burning, but also a promise that it will not be extinguished. Hashem will not let the fire burn out entirely. Every Jewish person has a pintele Yid, no matter how small. Perhaps if we work hard to feed our fire and keep it burning bright, our fire might then ignite a spark in the pintele Yid of those we encounter along the way, and also help obliterate Amalek, who cooled off those they encountered along the way.

All Eyes on Nanuet as Bais Yaakov Files Permit Denial Appeal A local Bais Yaakov has filed an appeal with the Town of Clarkstown, alleging that permits required to facilitate the school’s planned move to Nanuet were improperly rejected. The Journal News reported that Ateres Bais Yaakov’s application was denied on January 11, prompting this month’s appeal charging that zoning codes were improperly applied to the property, which had last been used as a school in 1991. Lawyers for the school said that it seemed illogical that the town was willing to allow a senior center at the location but not a school, noting that both would have populations that would be arriving by bus, would be used primarily during the day and would be supervised by qualified personnel. “We would just like equal justice under the law,” said Rabbi Aaron Fink, dean of Ateres Bais Yaakov, which educates approximately 400 girls from preschool through high school and is under contract to purchase the property for upward of $4 million. “We...just want to be treated fairly.” Residents have protested the school’s purchase of
the property, citing concerns about additional traffic and occupancy, parking, fire safety, and modifications to the existing structure. Ateres Bais Yaakov has said that traffic studies conducted by the town have demonstrated that local roads could accommodate traffic generated by the school as well as additional use that would result from a planned housing development to be situated near the Nanuet train station. Clarkstown Supervisor George Hoehmann said that the school’s application was incomplete and the town would be working with Ateres Bais Yaakov to correct the paperwork. The school is being co-represented at no charge by a prestigious law firm that litigates cases potentially involving cases of religious discrimination in regard to land use and has an impressive record of wins. Attorney Ira Emanuel, co-counsel for the school, said that the school has every intention of suing the town in court if necessary. “We’re hoping this thing gets resolved quickly and appropriately and that we don’t have to go any further with this,” said Emanuel.
Upstate NY Beer Festival Features Yeast Rescued From 1886 Shipwreck Those mishloach manos l’chaims and beautiful wines that grace many a Purim seudah may be a true embodiment of simchas yom tov, but when it comes to historic spirits, a craft ale introduced at a recent Albany beer festival was truly historic. Deep Ascent Ale was created, reported the Associated Press, with yeast extracted from bottles recovered from the SS Oregon, a luxury ship that sank in 1886 at the tail end of its journey from Liverpool, England, to New York after colliding with another vessel off the coast of Fire Island. It took divers two years to locate intact bottles of beer from the ship, which has been located more than 130 feet below the surface of the water off the Long Island coast for 131 years. Twenty-six bottles were recovered after a storm shifted sands and provided access to the first-class dining room in 2017. Brewer Jamie Adams, a scuba diving lover who has been operating a brewery on Long Island for the

last two decades said that he spent two years perfecting the beer, which he says has a “slightly fruity flavor with a hoppy finish.”

In the Jewish Quarter of Saragossa, Spain, feverish preparations were underway. The king was due to visit! At the royal parade, the Yidden were to honor the king by carrying all the Sifrei Torah. To minimize the sacrilege, the rabbanim instructed the community members to remove the scrolls from within the cases. After all, the king would be none the wiser either way. What they did not count on, though, was the trouble Marcus, a Jewish rebel, would stir up. Marcus informed the palace of the plan, emphasizing that this was a display of utter disrespect for the king. The king was greatly angered, and as the procession of Yidden passed during the parade, he demanded that the cases be opened.
Shock and fear paralyzed the Yidden. The repercussions of this insult to the king would be dire. They feared for their lives. To their surprise, however, the Sifrei Torah were all safe and sound inside! They soon heard that the previous night, Eliyahu Hanavi had appeared to the shammas of the shul in a dream and instructed him to replace all the scrolls in their holders. The shammas followed the instructions in such a hurry that he didn’t even have time to inform the leaders of his actions. The king turned his wrath upon the informer and ordered him hanged for conniving the false accusation. And the Yidden declared a special Purim that day, to be celebrated every year.

The Sephardic community of Chevron, which was mostly comprised of fugitives of the Spanish Inquisition, was ruled by a cruel pasha. In a neverending quest to fill his coffers at the community’s expense, the hardened anti-Semite announced a new tax of 50,000 piasters which was to be paid within the month. If they could not come up with the money in time, he warned, all their leaders would be killed and the remaining Jews sold as slaves. To prove how serious his threats were, he immediately arrested several community leaders. All attempts to reverse the impossible demands fell on deaf ears. A public fast and eis tefillah were proclaimed. The leaders also decided to send a pidyon to the Avos, buried in their city of Chevron, and they wrote their request on a klaf. However, the Me’aras Hamachpeilah was in Arab hands at the time, and the entrance was sealed. For a hefty bribe, the Yidden convinced the guard to toss the pidyon inside, through a window. The night before the tax was due, the pasha could not sleep. He removed the treasures from his safe and counted his coins, which totaled 50,000 piasters. Tomorrow my coffers will double in

value, he thought gleefully. Finally, sleep overtook him. All of a sudden, he saw three old men in his room who demanded his money. Trembling in fear, he handed over the sack of coins and the men disappeared. Awaking from his nightmare, the pasha fingered the key to his safe, relieved that it was where it was meant to be. For the Yidden of Chevron, it was a sleepless night as well. They had gathered in shul, davening together. When morning broke, the pasha and his soldiers arrived at the shul. As the shammas went to unlock the door, he noticed a strange bag. He dragged it over to the community leaders who were shocked at its glittering contents — 50,000 piasters! When the Jews handed the sack over to the pasha, he recognized it immediately. “I will tell you how you got this! he exclaimed. “Your holy Fathers rose from their graves and brought it to you. The pasha then begged for forgiveness and promised never to harm the Yidden again. Elated at the extraordinary turn of events, that day — 14 Teves — was designated as a communal Purim, to be celebrated annually. They called it the “Window Purim in remembrance of the window of the Me’aras Hamachpeilah through which their salvation shone.

against the Sultan. During the uprising, he captured 12 prominent members of the Jewish community. He demanded a high ransom for their release and threatened to kill the hostages and exile the entire community if he would not receive the money. On the day the ransom was due, the governor was assassinated by one of his staff members. The
hostages were immediately released, and the danger that had hovered above the community dissipated. The Yidden then wrote a megillah, describing the great miracle, and from that day forward, the community of Cairo celebrate their personal Purim on 28 Adar.
PURIM CHIOS Approx imately 1595
“Purim de la Senora” — literally, “Purim of the Woman of Honor” — was declared in Chios, Greece, after a frightening incident occurred during the era of the Inquisition. To the terror of the local Yidden, King Ferdinand of Spain had blockaded this Greek island with an entire flotilla. Early one morning, a Jewish woman went to the outdoor oven to bake her bread. Sparks
from the coal fire accidentally spread to the adjacent fortress, igniting some of the ammunition stored inside, and... bang! There was a great explosion. And the Spanish flotilla, anchored nearby, quickly sailed away in fright. When they realized that the threat of the Inquisition on local shores had passed, the Yidden designated a Purim of their own.
PURIM RHODES 14 A da r, 18 4 0
It was a classic blood libel: The Yidden of Rhodes, Greece, were accused of having killed a gentile boy so they could use his blood for their matzah. Swept in a fury, the governor of the island had the community leaders arrested and tortured, with a verdict of execution. Then, in an amazing twist, the gentile boy was found, alive and well! The prisoners were soon re-
leased. On the 14th of Adar, the Turkish sultan, Abed Almagid, recorded in a royal decree that the charges were false, and it was handed over to the Yidden for safekeeping. That’s when Purim took on a double remembrance in the city of Rhodes.
PURIM PRAGUE 2 2 Te v e s , 1 6 2 3
Preparations for the winter were in full swing at the palace of Governor Rudolph of Bohemia as invaluable carpets and curtains that were in storage throughout the summer months were taken out to be displayed.

As the servants entered the cellar to fetch one of the most precious curtains, made of gold brocade, they discovered that it was missing! The governor was incensed. He questioned every palace employee, but no one knew anything

of the theft. Chamberlain Hradek, an avid Jewhater, suggested that all stores and pawnshops be searched. “Be extra vigilant in the Jewish shops,” he stressed. Soon the soldiers uncovered the prize. The curtains were found in the shop of Enoch Altschul, an elderly respected and wealthy Jewish merchant. Enoch was shackled and led through the streets like a common criminal. At the palace, the governor was pleased with the developments. Not being a lover of Jews, this was his chance to shame them and perhaps acquire their wealth as well. Despite the pressure to reveal how the curtains had come into his possession, Enoch remained calm, refusing to explain. He had been sworn to secrecy, and his word was a word. After being beaten and tortured, Enoch was given until the follow-
ing morning to disclose the truth. If he would not do so he would be hanged, and permission would be granted for the locals to storm the ghetto of Prague. This shook up Enoch. Not only was his life at stake, but the fate of the entire community was in his hands! In his fitful sleep, he saw a vision of his rebbe, the Maharal of Prague, who had passed away not long before. The Maharal assured him that everything would be all right. The following morning, a large crowd gathered to watch the hanging of Enoch Altschul, and they were prepared to stomp the ghetto afterward. Suddenly, a pale Hradek came forward. “Have mercy on this Jew who thinks he is protecting your personal honor!” Hradek went on to explain that not long before, he was in desperate need of 25,000 ducats. On oath of secrecy, he pawned the curtains to Enoch, presenting a falsified note with the governor’s seal clinching the deal. But on the previous night, the sainted Maharal appeared to Hradek in a dream along with the Golem of Prague, and the Maharal instructed him to reveal the truth. As he finished his tale, Hradek fainted to the ground in a lifeless heap. Enoch’s chains were removed, and the attack on the ghetto was called off. For the next 100 years, the Altschul family, along with the community of Prague, kept a “Purim of the Curtains.”
PURIM YEMEN 18 A da r, yea r u n k now n
When the Imam of Yemen promoted his Jewish advisor to the position of grand vizier, his ministers were infuriated. It was enough that the king had placed all of his trust in this Jew all along, never making a move without consulting with him — now this! They immediately began to plot his downfall

and involved the servants of the beloved crown prince in their plans. The ministers arranged for the prince to visit the local shul on Purim. With Chacham Bashi and the grand vizier at their lead, the Yidden waited outside to welcome the prince.
As the prince dismounted from his horse, his servants caused him to stumble and land upon his unsheathed sword. To everyone’s horror, the prince fell dead! The servants had done their job well. Shouting that the Jews had slain the crown prince, they immediately hurried back to the palace. The joy of Purim turned to fear and panic. The king was distraught over his son’s death and believed the ministers who blamed the Jews. Immediately, the Jewish Quarter of Sana’a was encircled so no one could leave. An ultimatum of three days for the murderer to be brought to the palace was issued. If no one would show up, the entire ghetto would be set on fire, with everyone in it. Even the grand vizier was forced to remain inside, sharing his brethren’s fate. At the palace, the ministers were delighted. Their plan had worked! For the next three days, men, women and children participated in a public fast and eis tefillah. On the third day, a young boy announced that Hashem had heard their prayers, and he wanted to go tell the king who had slain his son. The Chacham Bashi took him seriously and, along with the grand vizier, accompanied the boy to the palace. An open golden coffin with the crown prince inside lay in the throne room. The boy approached it and placed a piece of parchment with the word “emes” written on it on the prince’s forehead. He called out, “Tell us the truth! Who killed you?” To everyone’s shock, the dead prince sat up and pointed at his two servants. The prince rested again, and the aleph disappeared from the parchment, leaving the word “meis.” The king had the servants and ministers involved in the plot, ten men in all, hanged. This day transformed from a day of despair to one of joy, to be rejoiced annually by the Yidden of Yemen.

While the coming of Adar is marbeh simcha in many households, in our house it is simcha on steroids! We run a costume gemach in memory of my father, Chaim Lipman Zev ben Abba Shmuel, a”h. My father was an intelligent, learned man with a calm demeanor, one who was genuinely happy when good fortune knocked on the doors of others. A gemach that churns out smiles would have given him much pleasure. He was niftar 10 years ago on Tu B’Shvat. On his shloshim, which was Purim, we decided to dedicate our mere two racks of costumes as an “official” gemach. I’m not sure how it happened, but since then the gemach has grown into 30 racks of men’s, women’s, and children’s clothing in sizes ranging from 3 months to 64 men’s! Somehow, we’ve acquired hundreds of accessories, shoes, wigs and hats. We have all different styles and categories ranging from Kohen Gadol to cowboy to ice cream to kallah, and everything in between. There is something for everyone in the family! This gemach has a life of its own, and miracles of its own to go with it. One miracle is our neverending collection. No matter how many people come, we never seem to run out of costumes. I liken it to Elisha and the oil; the more containers to hold the oil there were, the more oil there was. In our gemach, the more racks that I collect, the more costumes there are to fill them! It’s miraculous! Little miracles occur all of the time down in this basement. A customer will walk in and find “exactly” the missing piece they need to complete their costume idea. Customers sometimes end
up talking with each other and will discover that they have exactly what someone else needs at home and will lend it to them. In one memorable incident, a family came in search of pirate costumes. They outfitted the entire family and left with smiles. Several days later I found a box of donations at my door. As I excitedly rummaged through my treasure, I checked my messages at the same time. One of the messages was from my pirate family. They had neglected to take pirate pants for their father! I knew that those pants had already been checked out and was about to call them back (to give them the disappointing news) when I reached into the box of donations to find... a pair of adult pirate pants! Another time I heard of a store going out of business, and I went to see if they had any racks for sale. Not only were they getting rid of a few racks, they gave them to me for free! When I watch my children in the gemach, I am amazed at the skills that they have gained by helping to run this operation. They are personable by nature, but working with “customers” has taught them the importance of having patience, being helpful and staying organized. When people call they usually ask for me, assuming I am the one with the answers. The reality is that my children are capable of running the operation! One of the big lessons that my kids and I have

A COSTLY COSTUME VENTURE Running a costume gemach can be very rewarding and a lot of fun, but it’s not always as glamorous as it seems. Our gemach has no official source of funding other than my mother’s generous support and our very own wallets. Through the years I have purchased costumes on sale after the October holiday season, at thrift shops (mainly Kupath Ezra), at Saperstein’s Purim Store, or at various other places when I see a really good price on an item that I know will be popular. There are several big costs to running the gemach. Heavy-duty racks on wheels cost a fortune. We never use the skinny, weak racks because they can’t sustain the abuse. In order to keep the gemach neat, we use only hangers that are sturdy enough to be pushed around by our customers and still stay in shape without bending or cracking. We even purchase foam overlays for the hangers so that costumes don’t fall onto the floor. Even items that seem minor, such as hanger stands to hold extra hangers, and the stamp pads and stickers to label costumes, are costly. The shipping on all of these items, even those coming from as close by as Brooklyn, can raise the price of each of these items by almost 50 percent. We have over 30 drawers of accessories, and these drawers cost money as well, as do the clothing clips used to hang our wigs and the shoe bags used to hang our shoes. Some racks and drawer units have come as donations, but everything else requires a layout of money. I’ve never calculated the electricity cost in running the gemach, but our lights are on all of the time. We can always use cash donations to defray some of these costs. (Note: We are not an official tax-deductible organization, so we cannot issue receipts.)

learned in running the gemach is the importance of establishing boundaries. (That’s a fancy way of describing the ability to say “no.”) On the positive side, we have the opportunity to meet and interact with so many lovely people. People who are caring, giving and appreciative. On the other hand, we are also exposed to people who did not master their manners in kindergarten. You’d be surprised to see how inconsiderate some people can be even when you are doing them a favor. One day a woman came back with her returns
One of the big lessons that we have learned in running the gemach is the importance of establishing boundaries. (That’s a fancy way of describing the ability to say “no.”) (which the borrower is obligated to put away) and dumped them on our table. When asked to put them away she said that she had left her children in the car in the driveway so she had to run! Obviously, we were stuck putting her items away — her poor planning put an unfair amount of work on us. We have since implemented the policy of withholding the deposit if items are not returned according to the rules. Another time a woman set aside two full bags of costumes, saying that she would return with her deposit. Well, we held the bags and she never came back. That meant that no one else was able to take out those items for Purim. How sad. Now we no longer hold items. And can you imagine that one night someone actually called at 11:30 p.m.? Believe it or not,

CHESED WITH YOUR COSTUME Give your respectable costumes a second life of chesed! But please keep in mind that if the item is so tired-looking or stained that you or your kids would not consider wearing it, then please do not give it to us. Our items are in nice condition, and the gemach is not appealing to people if it is filled with junk. Between purchasing items, weeding through old items, hanging everything, organizing regularly and helping customers, we spend a tremendous amount of time on this project. Around Purim time we even solicit volunteers to help, because we need so much manpower in order to keep the place neat, write up receipts, help customers find things, and even just to direct the pileup of traffic outside!
one of my biggest personal accomplishments in running the gemach was not answering the doorbell when someone came to the gemach unannounced. It might sound unkind, but the fact is that without boundaries a chesed project becomes all-consuming, takes on a life of its own, and disables the chesed-doers from having the energy to continue doing chesed. The loosening of boundaries (what others might call “being nice”), even short-term, causes the demise of the operation in the long run. When these negative interactions occur, I am reminded of a phrase we say in davening where we ask Hashem to remove the satan milfaneinu from before us (so he won’t prevent us from doing a good deed) and mei’achareinu, from after us. What does mei’achareinu refer to? It is the negative thoughts that come up after we’ve done a good deed that deter us from repeating it. Dealing with difficult customers is the mei’achareinu — they are the ones whose attitude and lack of consideration challenge us to not continue
ine the opportunity to encourage hundreds of children and adults to be happy! Over the course of the year we help not just individuals, but families, schools, camps, weddings, kiruv programs, the local skilled nursing facilities, senior programs and special needs programs. We have had costumes travel to California with sick children, travel to Eretz Yisroel on special missions, travel to the Bronx, Newburgh, Poughkeepsie, Albany, Nebraska, and even travel all the way to the Ukraine, on kiruv missions! It’s amazing; families can come to us and know that whatever their child picks off our rack they can afford, because it’s free! Schools are always struggling with budget issues, and drama equipment is at the bottom of their list. Schools can come to us and enhance hundreds of students’ at-

sion heads dress up regularly. Special needs programs borrow costumes from us to brighten the days of the people they service, and my children and I wear the costumes to entertain at the local children’s hospital, nursing homes and special needs programs. And our costumes come back with wonderful stories to tell. Recently, a woman who had just flown in from Eretz Yisroel came in for costumes. She was marrying off an orphan and was determined to make the wedding as simcha’dig as possible. She borrowed British soldier jackets and hats, a gown, and even a gorilla costume! Then there was the widowed woman who came for a specific costume that her son loved because it reminded him of his father. A few years ago, a man

It’s hard to imagine that not all that long ago, the words “Purim” and “theme” were never used in the same sentence. Before the concept of dressing the entire family in matching or coordinating costumes — all of which dovetail adorably with a photoworthy mishloach manos — existed, Purim was actually a very joyous affair. Back in the day, we dressed up in costumes, never once making it a family project, and we brought paper plates bearing two apricot hamantaschen, a piece of fruit and maybe some nuts to our nearest and dearest. I guess if I had to ascribe a theme to the mishloach manos of my childhood it was this: being mikayem the mitzvah of mishloach manos! While there is no doubt that the emphasis behind even the most exquisite gourmet mishloach manos is most definitely fulfilling the mitzvah outlined in Megillas Esther, it seems to me that Purim has become a lot more stressful in recent years as we each try to come up with something new and super creative
114 / THE MONSEY VIEW / March 20, 2019 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484
that will have that “wow” factor. When my kids were little, every year we came up with a new costume for our eldest, while her two younger sisters happily dressed up in whatever she had worn a few years prior. As the family grew, baruch Hashem, I was more than thrilled to make piles of mishloach manos for my kids to distribute, with an understanding that I would drive each one to three friends’ houses, and anyone else they wanted to see on Purim would have to come visit us. That plan worked well, even if it necessitated me spending hours poring over a map creating the most efficient and direct route through Monsey, always starting at my son’s Pre-1A rebbi (whom we visited for several years) in New Square at 10 a.m. before the traffic started to pile up. With easily 30 or more mishloach manos to prepare for my cuties, my theme for quite a few years was very simple: What can I find on sale? In the early days we just went with cute cellophane bags tied with curling ribbon, upgrading just a little as my kids got older. There was one year that I found small plastic totes on Target’s 90 percent–off rack for 39 cents apiece in early Novem-
for smaller-sized items. And then was the year we went with truly tiny treats, after a drastically reduced clearance rack yielded miniature pastel organza boxes that really were quite cute. I confess that by the time my four oldest children were married or in yeshivah, and I had just one high school–aged daughter left at home, I let her imagination run wild with themed Purim ideas. There was year that she dressed up as (I kid you not) an egg, giving out mishloach manos in egg cartons, an original concept she followed up 12 months later with a more gourmet theme: making her own pasta by hand and donning a chef’s coat and toque for Purim. Her efforts were adorable and well received, and I really do understand how enjoyable it is to come up with a creative idea that makes people smile. But here’s the thing: It is awfully difficult to find a costume concept that translates into food items that people will actually want to eat.
AS SOMEONE who appreciates the concept of baal tashchis, especially having grown up as the daughter of someone who lived through World War II, I cannot handle the concept of food being discarded. I have heard stories of people who throw out all the homeWith easily 30 or more made mishloach manos mishloach manos to pre- that enter their home, for a variety of reasons, or of pare for my cuties, my others who pride themselves on tossing all candy theme for quite a few straight into the trash in years was very simple: front of their children’s What can I find on sale? eyes to teach them the lesson that sweets aren’t healthy. And with Purim ber, and I bought out their entire coming exactly 30 days before stock, filling them with cans of Pesach each and every year, the soda, a nice puffy snack bag that idea of filling people’s houses up took up a gezunte amount of space, with food that they will have to and one or two other kid-friendly get rid of in just a few weeks just items to fill up the rest of the bag. seems counterintuitive. donning to make the einiklach smile. Instead, the concept that we are going with this year, and hopefully in the future, will be, “What do people actually want to eat?” Knowing that people usually spend Purim snacking on goodies as they enter the house instead of eating a decent meal, I am considering cooking up a few giant pots of soup, an idea I have gone with in the past that has been well received. Or, with Purim falling out on Thursday this year, maybe I will ask my husband to make a nice 22-quart pot of his legendary cholent for us to distribute along with some kind of small beverage. Shabbos foods, small kugels or food that can be enjoyed over the next few weeks in the pre-Pesach rush also have potential. And — dare I even suggest this — well-wrapped items that are kosher l’Pesach are great because you can just put them away instead of figuring out how to use them up in the next few weeks. I don’t in any way want to rain on anybody’s parade or squelch their creative juices as they get ready for the true simcha that Purim brings; by all means, think out of the box and go with something beautiful and original. But as you pack up your mishloach manos, ask yourself if that beautiful gift of food is appropriately suited to

And if you have no interest in being restricted by a theme and would rather dress your kids in random costumes and put some chocolate and a bottle of grape juice in a shopping bag for your mishloach manos, kol hakavod to you. I promise you that the Purim police won’t come after you, and that neither you nor your kids will become social pariahs just because your mishloach manos or costumes are completely and utterly theme-free! I am cautiously optimistic that by the time you read this, my husband and I will have settled on a mishloach manos idea that we both think will be enjoyed by our recipients. So come on over on Purim and pay us a visit — we’d love to see you and hope you will enjoy whatever it is that we put together! SELLING SUCCESSFULLY ON AMAZON: Q AND A WITH PCS COURSE G R A D U AT E N U TA L E V Y Q: Please tell us about the PCS Amazon Course. Why is it important to learn from the pros before beginning? Selling on Amazon is very complex. There is a lot of good information out there, articles you can read, tutorials you can watch. They are great- only if you first understand the basics. It is very important to learn the foundations properly; otherwise one can make a lot of costly mistakes. The PCS Course gave me a lot information. I learned how to create listings, advertising, selling. I also gained valuable knowledge on what to look for in a product, to which I credit the success of my private label. Q: I understand that running an Amazon business will require a lot of hard work. At this point, I can’t give up my day job; yet I want to break into this field. If one has a good source of branded items, it will not require that much time and the profits can be immediate. One can work part time- for a few hours a week- and that’s enough. Selling a private label, on the other hand, takes a lot more time. It takes time to source products- research what to sell, where to manufacture them, and wait for the merchandise to arrive. Listings must also be created with key words and advertisements that are appropriate for the market. Q. What is the projected time-frame of how soon one can expect to generate income? That depends on what you are selling. With branded items, the income can be immediate. Private label takes more time. A new item can take about a year to really generate income. For the first year, one would need another source of income. Even though the seller will generate profits in the beginning, he would need to set that aside for the future orders. Q: I’ve been selling on Amazon for half a year and haven’t really been successful yet. I’ve read many blogs and did a lot of research. What can I expect to gain from this course? This course is like a reset, when you go through every detail from the beginning. You can then see where the mistakes are, troubleshoot, and improve. Q: Please tell us about your personal experience. A: Through PCS’s Amazon course, I gained a lot of knowledge and priceless information that helped me a lot with building my Amazon business. Exploring the two amudim that start with Hamelech: the amud of Shacharis during Yamim Noraim and the hiddur of amudim in Megillas Esther to start with Hamelech But is a Hamelech Megillah really preferable? Hamelech... Who doesn’t know the poignant tune sung when we proclaim Hashem as Master of the universe on Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur? As the shaliach tzibbur stands at the amud and begins intoning those famous words, it signals the beginning of the special tefillos of the Yamim Noraim, where we plead of the King of kings to grant us a kesivah v’chasimah tovah. Then there is a second, perhaps less recognized, “amud” that starts with “Hamelech,” and that is each amud (column) in a Hamelech Megillah, which is written as per the
122 / THE MONSEY VIEW / March 20, 2019 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484
hiddur of beginning each column with the word “Hamelech.” Although a megillah is kosher without this hiddur, a Hamelech Megillah is nevertheless still preferable. (And if the sofer of the megillah showed off his artwork by drawing a beautiful crown atop each Hamelach as well, the quality of the megillah is even further enhanced.) But is this indeed a hiddur? Let’s see. We will first discuss the columns in a Sefer Torah. If you examine a Sefer Torah, you will notice that each column starts with the letter vav. This is commonly known as the minhag of vavei ha’amudim. (This is a
play on the words vavei ha’amudim, which is mentioned in Parshas Vayakhel when the pasuk describes the building of the Mishkan. The literal definition of vavei ha’amudim is the “hooks of the pillars” on which the curtains in the Mishkan were hung. It is from this terminology that the vavei ha’amudim in the sense of the columns of a Sefer Torah is derived.) However, there are six exceptions to this rule: In six specific areas in the Torah, there is a mesorah that the column must start with specific letters of specific words. This concept is known as the “siman beyah shemo” (a play on the words “beyah shemo” in Tehillim 68 that contain the six letters that must appear in specific places.) These six letters are commonly known to sofrim.
This minhag of vavei ha’amudim was already mentioned by the Rishonim, but some criticized this minhag. The Hagahos Maimoni on the Rambam writes that this practice should be stopped, since sofrim tend to stretch the letters or narrow them to an extreme just for the sake of calculating that the letter vav should be at the beginning of the column, which brings the whole validity of the Sefer Torah into serious doubt. He even mentions a sofer by name whom he claims wanted to show off his expertise on calculating vavei ha’amudim, and he strongly
It is commonly known that wherever the word “Hamelech” is mentioned in the megillah, it alludes to “Malko shel olam.” discourages other who wish to copy him. The Remah in Shulchan Aruch dismisses this minhag as well as having no basis. However, the Chidah cites that starting each column with the letter vav has a serious reason al pi sod. The Aruch Hashulchan states the same, and also encourages this practice. There are some who bring the following fascinating explanation: The Midrash brings that after the Mishkan was completed, a calculation was made as to the total amount of donations that Klal Yisroel gave, as well as the total expenses. When the calculation was completed, some money seemed to be missing. There were those who started accusing Moshe Rabbeinu of pocketing this missing money, but then they realized that they had forgotten to add the expenses of the vavei ha’amudim — the hooks of the pillars — which accounted for this missing money. Since it was these vavei ha’amudim that proved Moshe Rabbeinu’s innocence, each column in Toras Moshe starts with the letter vav, alluding to this episode. Today, the Tikkun Sofrim, which all copy from, is indeed set up according to the minhag of vavei ha’amudim, and no deformation of any letters are necessary. Now that we discussed the issue of the columns in Sifrei Torah — what about the columns in Megillas Esther? Is there something to starting each column with the word “Hamelach,” as the prevailing minhag
March 20, 2019 / THE MONSEY VIEW / 123 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484
seems to suggest? Well, at least tentatively, it seems that there is reason not to do so. And let’s explain: The Gemara states that the names of the 10 children of Haman in Megillas Esther should be written in the following manner: “ish” at the beginning of the daf, and “v’es” at the end. Most poskim interpret this to mean that these 10 names must be written in a An 11-line megillah written by the author Rabbi Shea Lindner with the aseres bnei Haman in a separate column with the same size lettering as the rest of the text separate column altogether. This means that the word “ish” right before the beginning of the aseres bnei Haman should be the first word of the first line on the column, with the word “v’es” at the end of the line. The second line should start with the word “Parshandasa,” and again end with the word “v’es,” and so on until the last word on the column should be the word “aseres.” In this case, this specific column could have no more than 11 lines — one line for each of the 10 names, plus the line starting with the word “ish.” But some are of the opinion that the terminology “beginning of the daf” does not necessarily refer to the beginning of the column, but rather to the beginning of the line. Many indeed have the minhag of reading in a megillah of 42 lines — the same amount of lines a Sefer Torah has — and the aseres bnei Haman in such a megillah are indeed not written on a separate column.
A 21-line Hamelech Megillah with the aseres bnei Haman in a separate column with larger lettering
A 42-line megillah where the aseres bnei Haman are not in a separate column, but are the same size as the rest of the text
124 / THE MONSEY VIEW / March 20, 2019 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484
MOST MEGILLOS today are written on 28 lines. In this case, it is easy to calculate that each column should start with the word “Hamelech.” However, the Vilna Gaon had a problem here. He claimed the following: If the aseres bnei Haman are written in a separate column, it automatically means that this column must be written in letters that are larger than the rest of the text in the Megillah. All large and small letters in Tanach, starting from the large beis of the word Bereishis and going until the end of Kesuvim, have an exact mesorah regarding where they are written and why they should be written in those specific places. However, when it comes to the aseres bnei Haman, there is no mesorah that this is one of those instances. Therefore, in order to accommodate both opinions — both that the word “ish” should be the first word in the col-
umn and “aseres” the last, and that the lettering of the aseres bnei Haman should be the same size as the rest of the text in the megillah — the only option is to write the entire megillah in columns
We think that we know what is good for us and what is not, but we don’t. that consist of no more than 11 lines each. Many indeed seek out a megillah of 11 lines, and consider such a megillah the most mehudar. But in a megillah like this, it is simply impossible to start each column with the word “Hamelach.” Since a megillah of 11 lines obviously has far more columns than a megillah of 28 lines, it simply doesn’t say “Hamelech” enough times in the megillah to start each column with them. So it seems that if we’re concerned about hiddur in halacha, a “non-Hamelech” Megillah is the way to go... But in truth, there might indeed be a deeper meaning behind this minhag. It might be appropriate to allude here to the Gemara: “Let Klal Yisroel be; if they are not Nevi’im, they are however children of Nevi’im” (Pesachim 66:1). It is commonly known that wherever the word “Hamelech” is mentioned in the megillah, it alludes to “Malko shel olam” — the King of the world. The source for this analogy is none other than Rebbe Shimon Bar Yochai’s famous Tikkunei Zohar. When one reads the words of Zohar, it is fascinating to see that the entire story of Megillas Esther —

There is also a general lesson for all to be gleaned from the nes Purim. Historically, the time preceding the story of Purim was an extremely depressing one for Klal Yisroel, both physically, and even more so spiritually, even before Haman’s evil decree became known. This chapter of history took place at the end of the prophesied 70 years of Galus Bavel, and there was no sign of any geulah on the horizon. This caused Achashveirosh much delight, and he set out preparing this lavish feast to celebrate. To add insult to injury, he made sure to invite Klal Yisroel so they should see him displaying the holy vessels of the Beis Hamikdash and donning the holy clothes of the Kohen Gadol, taunting them as if to say: “Where is your geulah, as your Nevi’im have promised?” Many even started intermarrying, as it says in Sefer Ezra. And then the tzaddekes, Esther, was forced to marry this rasha. To say that tzaros b’gashmius is really all for the best, and that Hashem has his Master plan that we mortals cannot comprehend, is one thing. But suggesting that forcing an “eidele Yiddishe tochter” to marry a rasha is all for the best sounds absurd! How can such a scenario turn out to be anything
126 / THE MONSEY VIEW / March 20, 2019 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484
other than the ultimate catastrophe for a Jewish family? And then came along the all-powerful Haman, who decided to slaughter the entire Klal Yisroel and take the great Mordechai Hatzaddik and hang him as a lowly criminal. There was no logical way out. It truly seemed that Hashem had forsaken them. And then came a spectacular turn of events, which no one could have imagined in their wildest dreams! What had seemed to be a great tragedy, in both a physical and spiritual sense, ended up saving Klal Yisroel! And so many other seemingly unrelated past events suddenly came together as pieces of the puzzle, which now fit so neatly to complete the picture. This miraculous chain of events might be a reason to start each column in Megillas Esther with “Hamelech.” For the “Hamelech” we beseech on Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur and the “Hamelech” of the Megillah are actually one and the same. The practice of starting each column with “Hamelech” reminds us that each “column” and chapter in the story starts with the ultimate “Hamelech” — Hamelech Malchei Hamlachim.
the struggle between Esther and Haman — alludes to the struggle between kedushah and tumah, with the nes of Purim itself alluding to the ultimate geulah sheleimah. Ah Freilichen Purim! Rabbi Shea Lindner is an experienced, certified sofer stam residing in Spring Valley, New York. He has been serving customers in homes, shuls and schools around the country since 1993. Rabbi Lindner is an expert who is especially known for his keen eye in detecting serious problems while inspecting tefillin and mezuzos that have otherwise gone undetected for many years. He is also the author of the annual publication “Kol Sofer” on this subject, which is distributed in New York and has won wide acclaim. Rabbi Lindner can be reached by phone at 917-362-9126, or by email at info@ mezuzamehudar.com.
He is dictating the story of Purim, a story that alludes to all of our personal life stories, among them our seemingly incomprehensible hardships both b’ruchnius and b’gashmius. With Hashem’s help, soon it will suddenly become clear how it was indeed all for the best. This is the reason why it’s actually a mitzvah to become drunk on Purim. Why would there be such a seemingly strange mitzvah? To be b’simcha — of course. But why the obligation to actually become drunk? The answer is that we are supposed to remember on Purim that we are actually drunk all year — we are in the state of ad d’lo yada all year. We think that we understand what’s going on in this world, but we really don’t. We think that we know what is good for us and what is not, but we don’t. Purim stresses this point very strongly, and this is what we should always remember!

One must be especially careful there is no problem of hachanah and zilzul Shabbos when not to tell one’s kids to eat extra so they should be able to one is merely speaking. Nevertheless, when one’s speech fast, or nap so they should be able to stay up, since it is a describes that he is doing something for after Shabbos, mistake that is very commonly made. it is assur to say it. such as money, food, etc., one uses the lashon of l’halvos. Since when one borrows food and other consumable things he needs to give back another of the same item and it can take time to acquire the new item, people usually lend these types of things for a longer period of time. However, regarding things that are returned as they are, no time is required to acquire a new one, and therefore people usually lend it for just a short time.3 The halacha states that since the lashon of halva’ah connotes borrowing for a long period of time, we are afraid that if one will use the lashon of halva’ah on Shabbos, the lender will write down what he lent so that he won’t forget.4 Therefore, the halacha says that one can only use the lashon of l’hashil on Shabbos. Because the lashon of l’hashil suggests borrowing for a short period of time, the lender won’t need to write what he is lending since he is not afraid he will forget.5 Even though grammatically one should use the lashon of l’halvos when borrowing things that are used up, the halacha nevertheless requires one to use the lashon of l’hashil on Shabbos since it connotes lending for a short time.6 In English and other languages, where no distinction is made when borrowing for short or long periods of time, the halacha says that one is not allowed to ask, “Can you lend me?” or “Can I borrow?” Rather, one must ask, “Can you give me?”7 By making a change from the usual lashon, one is reminding the lender not to write it down on Shabbos. One may also add the words “and I will give it back to you” so that the lender will not hesitate to lend the item, thinking that the borrower will not return it.8 Even when one is borrowing something for a mitzvah, one is not allowed to use the lashon of borrowing and lending because the concern of writing applies then, too.9 So in summary: When borrowing a sefer, wine, challah or anything that is needed on Shabbos, one may not ask, “Can you lend me?” or “Can I borrow?” Rather, one should ask, “Can you give me?” and he may add, “and I will return it to you,” so that the lender will be willing to lend it to him. If one is approached by someone who asks him in English, “Can you lend me?” or “Can I borrow?” one is allowed to lend him the item after saying, “It is assur to lend and borrow on Shabbos, but I can give it to you.” If one is asked in Lashon Hakodesh to borrow something by using the lashon of “l’halvos,” one is allowed to lend it to him after saying it is assur “l’halvos” on Shabbos, but he can “l’hashil.”10 The purpose of this column is to bring awareness to matters of halacha. As with any halacha-related questions, consult your rav for a psak.

Glassware isn’t all it’s cracked up to be, simply because some will not crack all that easily. That’s because the word glassware is a misnomer; not all glasses are made of glass. Within this group falls annealed glass (the most delicate of the lot), tempered glassware, crystal glassware, ceramic and porcelain glassware, plastic glassware, and the most recent addition to the glassware scene: silicone.
Most wine glasses are stemware. That is so that the drinker should be able to hold the glass without affecting the temperature of the wine. Some stemware are even double-walled, with inner and outer walls separated by a small air-filled gap designed to slow the transfer of heat from the drinker’s hand to the beverage.
A red wine glass has a larger, rounder bowl so one can swirl the wine around in it to allow it to oxidize, which deepens the flavor.
A white wine glass has a smaller mouth to prevent the wine from oxidizing, thus retaining the delicate notes in the white wine.
The traditional cocktail glass is an inverted wide conical bowl upon a stem. Since cocktails have interesting aromas (due to the mix of flavors in them), the large mouth allows access for the aroma to be fully appreciated.
One common example of a cocktail glass is the martini, which is entirely conical at the base.
134 / THE MONSEY VIEW / March 20, 2019 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484
When it comes to drinking wine, there’s a very large selection of glassware to choose from, and each one has a very specific function.
The most common champagne glass form is a flute. This slender shape, which tapers on top, is designed to prevent the carbonation from escaping. The deep bowl of a flute further enhances the experience with the visual effect of bubbles rising to the top. The narrow mouth also captures the wine’s aroma, but it doesn’t exactly leave enough access for the nose to appreciate it. Some may opt for the shallower, wider champagne coupe, that has a wide-enough mouth for the smell to be accessed. Others might take the middle road with a tulip glass, which is wide enough to allow the drinker to enjoy the aroma, but narrow enough to avoid loss of carbonation.
Tumblers, specifically the highball glass, are another choice for cocktails. When to use which? The cocktail stemware is for cocktails without ice and higher alcohol content, and the tumblers are for cocktails that are poured over ice and contain a larger proportion of non-alcoholic beverages.
Hot cocktails, like Irish Coffee, will usually be served in the heat-resistant Irish Coffee glass that has a handle attached for comfortable drinking.
You’ll sometimes see a shooter glass that is taller than the shot glass and may flare out on top. Those are a bit larger to hold a mixture of beverages.
Short tumblers are those with a solid base, known as the oldfashioned glass (yup, that’s why you know them from grandma’s kitchen) or rocks glass (named so for the beverages served in these lowball glasses “on the rocks,” as cocktail poured over ice is known in wine lingo).
For liqueur, the glasses to use are cordials, liqueur glasses or similar small glasses that hold two ounces or less.
And then there is the most popular of the lot: the shot glass, named for the word “shot,” which means a drink of alcohol.
