‫הדלקת הנרות‬ ‫מוצאי שבת‬ Last week I had huge scare while waiting for my child’s bus. I was outside with my baby in my arms when I spotted a toddler running into the street. Jumping into the path of an oncoming bus, I signaled for it to stop, which it did, but almost a second too late — I grabbed the toddler when he was only two feet away from disaster. And then, the nightmare continued. While holding that toddler in one arm and my own baby in the other, a passerby pointed out that there was yet another child toddling outside alone! My heart was shaking as I ran to grab yet another baby! Thankfully, a neighbor saw what was happening and picked up one of the children, and we returned them to their home. The parents had been inside, oblivious to what had happened! Lest you think the parents were neglectful, erase that thought. The family takes fantastic care of their charges. Long story short, the children had snuck down to the basement when no one was looking and managed to unlock the door and head outside. It could happen to anyone. Parents: Please make sure that your doors are unable to be opened by little folk who are unaware of danger! This was a very scary lesson for all of us to learn. A Traumatized Mother

I appreciate it so much, in fact, that I went and bought a special gift for you, on top of my regular mishloach manos. Not only that, but I also added a nice check. It’s all ready to be delivered. WHAT WAS IN THE BAG? (Re: To Theme or Not to Theme?, Issue 191) I truly enjoyed your Purim issue. To be honest, I only got to sit down and read it once Purim was over, but what an uplifting read it was. I found the stories behind the Purims around the year fascinating, enjoyed the spirited look into the Adams’ costume gemach (what an amazing endeavor!), and learned some interesting megillah facts — a topic never explored in the past. And how very festive the sides of salmon were! I also enjoyed the wisdom shared in regard to making mishloach manos useful and enjoyable for recipients. However, since I did not make it to the Eller’s home this Purim (no address was included!), I am left to wonder: What is it that the Eller family gave for mishloach manos this year? S.H. SANDY ELLER RESPONDS: Having committed myself to doing my best to send out foods that people will actually want to eat, and with Purim falling out on Thursday, I made a decision to go with cholent this year, accompanied by a beverage. My husband vetoed my idea of having containers of cholent pre-packed and ready to distribute in the refrigerator, so instead we doled out fresh, hot ladlefuls as people came to our door. Best of all, my husband’s cholent is legendary, which meant that all I had to do was peel some potatoes and print out labels, while he did the rest — a win-win situation for everyone, if you ask me!

Shemini By: Malka Schneps

A seminary in Eretz Yisroel was looking to hire a new “aim bayis.” Many women applied for the position, each presenting reasons why she would be the most qualified person for the job. Each applicant was sure that her particular combination of personal attributes and work experience made her the best choice. All except for one, that is. Shaindy* was interested in the position, but she was worried about whether or not she was really up to the challenge. At her interview, Shaindy expressed her concerns and sought answers to her questions regarding the job. She knew that being an aim bayis was a great responsibility, and she was legitimately concerned about taking it on. Out of all the applicants, the seminary hired Shaindy. Shaindy’s concerns about her abilities indicated that she was suited to the job; she did not assume herself to be up to the job, but hoped to be adequate for the position. An aim bayis must be someone who understands that it is a serious undertaking and who reaches up to perform the task, rather than seeing it as a somewhat easy job. Most important of all was that the candidate be there for the position itself, and not for the perks that came along with it, such as free housing. By expressing her reservations, Shaindy showed that she was focused on the job itself and not just on how it could benefit her. It says in this week’s parsha, “Vayomer Moshe el Aharon, kerav el

96 / THE MONSEY VIEW

hamizbei’ach va’asei… — Moshe said to Aharon, ‘Approach the altar and perform your sin offering and your burnt offering, atoning for yourself and for the people, and perform the people’s sacrifice, atoning for them, as Hashem has commanded’” (Vayikra 9:7). Rashi cites a Midrash that Aharon was embarrassed to take on the job, so Moshe Rabbeinu had to encourage him, by saying, “Why are you embarrassed? It was for this that you were chosen.” Rabbi Yissocher Frand, shlit”a, explains that when Moshe told Aharon, “Why are you embarrassed? It is for this reason you were chosen,” he meant that Aharon’s very humility — his embarrassment — was the reason he was chosen. Moshe was telling Aharon that the very fact that he felt unworthy for the job was the proof that he was indeed worthy of it. Aharon’s humility was what made him deserving of the job. Rabbi Frand cites the Chasam Sofer who draws a connection between Aharon Hakohen’s feeling unworthy of his position to Moshe’s feeling unworthy of becoming the leader of the Bnei Yisroel and leading them out of Mitzrayim. “Who am I that I should go before Paroh?” Moshe had asked. The Chasam Sofer explains that this humility is the very reason Moshe was chosen. Rabbi Frand explains that a feeling of unworthiness is a defining characteristic of the type of person Hashem wants in a position of leadership. For one thing, this attribute stems from a high

level of respect for the job. Such a person clearly understands how important a leader’s position is and is rightly afraid of the responsibility. But it is more than that. A person who realizes that they are not up to the job will, upon being given the job, turn to Hashem for help. Everyone is a leader in some way. If you are a parent, then you are a leader to your children. Older siblings are leaders to their younger siblings. If you are a rebbi or a teacher, then you are a leader to your students. And, of course, rabbanim are leaders to their kehillos. The first step to succeeding in your position as leader is to understand how big and important your job is. To some extent, you hold the Yiddishkeit of the next generation in your hands. Going into Pesach, people are preparing to lead the Pesach Seder and fulfill the mitzvah of “v’higadeta l’vincha.” It is a tremendous and almost frightening undertaking: to pass our mesorah on to the next generation as commanded in the Torah. The more we reflect on the tremendous responsibility we are being given, the less worthy we might feel. But we are not alone. Hashem helps us. The Nesivos Sholom cites the Rambam who says that when a parent tells the story of Yetzias Mitzrayim to their child on the first night of Pesach, it is a segulah for emunah. Hashem helps the words to be accepted and believed. None of us may feel worthy, but that is the very sign that we are.

Jewish Voters Play Major Role on Election Day in Airmont, Pomona and Chestnut Ridge The turnout was high last week at the local elections, with new faces voted in by relatively narrow leads in hotly contested races in both Pomona and Airmont, while incumbents held on tight in Chestnut Ridge. All three villages have been struggling in recent years, with zoning regulations and code enforcement becoming hot-button issues as the Monsey Jewish community’s growth has spilled over into neighboring areas. The race to control Airmont’s Village Hall made news several weeks ago when Airmont Mayor Phillip Gigante and running mates Paul Marchesani and Anthony Valvo were kicked off the official ballot for election fraud after submitting petitions that lacked the required number of signatures. The local Jewish community turned out in force to support the Protect Airmont slate, voting Nathan Bubel in as mayor and Brian Downey and Migdalia Pesante in as village trustees. All will serve a four-year term, reported The Journal News. Protect Airmont won by a fairly slim margin, beating out Gigante and the Preserve Airmont slate’s write-in campaign by just over 200 votes. Bubel and his running mates ran on a platform that promised honesty, fairness and transparency while prioritizing single-family housing and adherence to the village’s zoning codes. A statement issued after the election by the winning team said that they intended to promote harmony in the village, which has been plagued by lawsuits challenging officials with enacting zoning regulations that intentional-

106 / THE MONSEY VIEW / March 27, 2019 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484

ly discriminated against frum Jews. “We look forward to a seamless transition as our Protect Airmont team will work tirelessly on all village matters fairly and equally,” read the statement. “We are ready for all Airmont’s citizens to have a voice, to be heard and advocated for.” In Pomona, Ian Banks will be replacing Brett Yagel, who chose not to seek reelection after serving as the village mayor since 2007. Banks, a 22-year trustee, won the election along with running mates Carol McFarlane and Ilan Fuchs, who were newly elected to seats on the village’s board of trustees. Like Airmont, Pomona has been facing legal action from Jewish residents who say that they have been unfairly targeted when it came to zoning issues, and village residents have been facing increased taxes as a result of an over 10-year-long, $5 million legal battle to prevent the Tartikov yeshivah from building on a local property. Yagel and several other officials were slapped with a pair of federal civil rights lawsuits in November accusing them of anti-Semitic behavior, including allegedly suggesting to one village employee that she leave pork rinds on Village Hall’s front counter to prevent Jewish residents from entering the building. Banks, who will be taking office on April 1, said that he intends to announce staff changes at Village Hall whose employees include the village’s building and code inspectors. Reducing lawsuits, creating a road repair schedule and a 2019 fiscal budget, which could include a small tax break, are all priorities, according to Banks.

Chestnut Ridge board of trustee members Grant Valentine and Paul Van Alstyne both survived threats from challengers. The two supported the village’s newly passed house of worship law that implemented a three-tiered zoning law for residential shuls based on the number of people in attendance. The plan, crafted in conjunction with members of the Orthodox Jewish Coalition, was created to protect the constitutional rights of Chestnut Ridge’s many new Jewish families, but is facing potential legal challenges from critics. Valentine and Van Alstyne said that they intend to do their part in ensuring that local residents work together toward common goals, noting, “We demonstrated to the residents of Chestnut Ridge, we have the experience, skills and passion for our families, new and old.” Chestnut Ridge is also facing a lawsuit of its own, with a coalition of plaintiffs suing the village for using zoning codes to discriminate against its Jewish residents. Chestnut Ridge Mayor Rosario Presti said that he hopes that the divisiveness that has plagued the village will heal over time. “With time and with the continued efforts by the village governing body and our various constituencies, the village will coalesce as a community and progress,” said Presti. Uncontested elections were also held in New Square and Kaser, where Mr. Elya Pinkasovits will be taking over as mayor following the death of the village’s founding mayor, Rabbi Berl Rosenfeld.

Making Pesach Without a Pesach Kitchen A S T EP - B Y-S T EP S ER I A L I Z ED SUMMARY BY: CHANA RIVKY SPITZER

Living in an older Monsey home means I get to enjoy my backyard hammock in privacy without worrying about prying eyes, and that my boys can climb onto countertops with their shoes on because another kick won’t make a difference to the worn wooden cabinets. The downside, though, is that the house wasn’t exactly built with a Yiddishe family’s needs in mind. So when Pesach comes around, we kasher our kitchen and live in a plastic and aluminum-foiled fortress for eight days. After many years of fine-tuning the process, I’ve learned quite a few things about making this transition simpler, and I will be sharing them with you over the next few weeks. Hopefully it’ll make your “kitchen turnover” journey easier and calmer. (As long as you remember that it’s only the chometz that needs to go, not your sanity or anyone else’s either.)

Whether you prepare for Pesach by combing through every crack and crevice in your home for weeks or casually tape up and sell half the house for the goy to enjoy, the actual chometz must be tackled if you intend to cook in your kitchen on Pesach. After I met up with a container of oat bran one Motzei Pesach one year, because it had camouflaged itself well among the containers of beans and rice, I learned to start by sorting the places where chometz is — or should be.

THIS WEEK:

TAKING STOCK S EPA R AT I N G T H E C H O M E T Z F R O M T H E NON- CHOME T Z WITHIN THE KITCHEN

T H E PA N T R Y (O R FOOD CABINET )

Begin by going through one shelf at a time and sep-

arating the chometz from the non-chometz. Items like beans, rice cakes and corn chips, and baking ingredients like vanilla sugar, cocoa,

pudding mix, jello, baking powder, etc. should be placed in one section to be sold. There’s no need to dispose of anything that is not actually chometz. Having all these foods neatly arranged in the pantry makes the transition from Pesach back to chometz after yom tov so much easier, without a frenzied trip to the grocery because “There’s nothing in this house.” As for real chometz, and

anything else you don’t want to keep, estimate approximately how much you’ll still use before yom tov. Some examples: Oatmeal/hot cereals: Three containers of oatmeal and only one family member who likes it? Keep one and find a neighbor/ friend/chometz gemach who can use the rest. Cold cereals and crackers: Keep only what will realistically be used up within a week or two, and for the last two weeks, stock up on gluten-free cereals and crackers; there’s a great variety available, and they’re real sanity-savers for the days leading to Pesach. Isn’t it great to know the children can eat on their own without trailing Cheerios and soup nuts out of the kitchen and into the closet you just declared chometz-free? Cookies and snacks: Too many packages of cookies and wafers? You can send them to school/yeshivah/shul now to be shared and enjoyed by all. You may be thinking… School? Seriously? Everyone has so much Purim stuff — who needs more snacks? What you may not know is that there are some parents who dispose of every cookie/ chocolate/snack the day after Purim and falsely assume that their children don’t need snacks in school until after Pesach. These hungry children will surely appreciate your surplus foodstuff. And on your end, you’ll avoid the sudden discovery of full bags of chometz’dig cookies and snacks much closer to Pesach. Pasta/farfel/couscous: These are certainly easy-to-prepare foods, but the mess they create by little people feeding themselves while a harried mother is cleaning for Pesach makes their loss greater than their gain. Use them now, or find someone else who can. After you’ve divided all of your stuff, designate one area or shelf — preferably lower down so chometz doesn’t find its way back into what you’ve already cleaned — where chometz can be stored until it’ll be moved out of the pantry and into the chometz corner when you’re ready to kasher.

AND THE FREEZER!

Take stock of what’s in there and make a list of every item. Although I’m usually extremely spontaneous, cooking meals according to what’s in my fridge at the given moment, this is one time of the year where I learn to work with a menu. I make an exact plan for the next few weeks and rigorously stick to it. It assures two things: a minimum amount of good food going to waste, and supper being ready on time, since I know what to pull out of the freezer. No need to brainstorm at 5 p.m. while scrubbing the oven door amid a choir of whining, hungry little folks. Organize the freezer the same way as the pantry: First place all non-chometz that doesn’t need to be consumed or thrown out on one shelf. Examples include: frozen vegetables and fruit, margarine, whip topping, raw chicken and meat, vegetable soups, rice kugel, and anything not containing actual chometz, and fresh enough to still be used after Pesach (and no, not those brown bananas you froze because you were going to blend them into a smoothie six months ago). Put all these foods into a large bag to be sold over Pesach. There’s no hiddur in throwing out perfectly usable food (unless your minhag is otherwise). Cakes, cookies, bread, challos: Keep only what is likely to be consumed before Pesach. Have ten challos and need only six? You can incorporate French toast or grilled cheese sandwiches into your menu for easy, childfriendly suppers. If something like that won’t work, donate them and their other chometz friends now when there’s someone who can still enjoy them. Kugels/soups/knishes: When preparing your menu now, put the crumb-topped lokshen kugel and flaky dough knishes first. You don’t want to be fretting over their wayward crumbs a week to Pesach. Enjoy your crumbliest, messiest chometz this week. Next week we’ll be working on setting up the chometz corner.

COMBINED RECIPES

Ice Cream Meringue This dessert is certainly impressive, so of course there’s some work involved. But I make other desserts with the same components as well to get a variety of desserts at the same time. This cake can be made in a long, narrow loaf pan or a 9” round pan.

RECIPES TO USE FROM PREVIOUS PAGES 1 recipe meringue layers ½ recipe chocolate cream ½ recipe ice cream

DIRECTIONS 1.  Meringue layers: Using pan of choice as a guide, trace three outlines onto a large sheet of parchment paper. Prepare meringue batter as directed and spoon or pipe onto paper into outlines. (Use extra mixture to make small meringues with a piping bag to decorate top or for snacking.) Bake as directed. 2.  Ice cream: Line two loaf or round pans with plastic wrap. Prepare ice cream and spoon half into one prepared pan. Flavor other half with coffee, as directed in recipe, and spoon into second pan. Freeze. 3. Begin to assemble by spooning thick layer of chocolate filling onto each meringue layer. 4. Working quickly (Pesach ice cream melts fast!), remove coffee ice cream with plastic from pan and invert onto one layer. Remove plastic wrap. Place second layer of meringue over ice cream. Invert plain ice cream over second layer of meringue and top with third layer of meringue. Decorate with small meringues, if desired. 5. Freeze until ready to serve.

Freeze until top is somewhat solid, OR if you don’t mind a more marbleized look (layers blending into each other), proceed to the next step right away. 3. Spoon thin layer of blended fruit onto mousse, then cover with thick layer of ice cream. Freeze. Note: This can also be made in one large pan. Bake one large flat cookie in 9x13 pan. Continue as directed. Cut into squares to serve.

1. Line 9x13 pan with plastic wrap. Crumble cookies evenly over bottom of pan. 2. Flavor half of ice cream with cocoa or coffee, as directed on previous page. 3. Carefully spoon plain ice cream over half of cookie crumbs. Spoon flavored ice cream over other half of crumbs. (Half of pan should be plain and half flavored.) Freeze. 4. hanah rishonah is special time. It is a year of setting down foundations. Of dreams for the future. Of discovering who we are, as individuals, and as adults. But it is also a year of discovering who we are not, and where we may fall short. It is an introduction to reality, and in many ways, the first real step on our paths to spiritual growth and maturation. My first year of marriage was a combination of bliss, gratitude, introspection — and guilty feelings. The feelings of guilt weren’t always there, to be sure. It was only at certain, specific times that they snuck up on me and beat me down. The truth is, though, that my guilt was unfounded, and I wish I had known that then. Let me explain.

Every morning I’d wake before the sun, quietly get ready for work and tip-toe out the door while my husband would continue to sleep for just a little bit longer. He’d then run to daven and spend the day bent over his Gemara in kollel. How I loved our shanah rishonah life! It was a dream that my husband was basking in the timeless wisdom of the Torah all day, every day. My schedule looked very different. I’d catch a bus that took me 45 minutes away from home to spend the next seven hours working for a paycheck that would cover our bills. It was a privilege — albeit a draining one — to support our fledgling family as my husband learned. After another 45-minute bus ride, there

March 27, 2019 / THE MONSEY VIEW / 137 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484

would be a mad dash to prepare a three-course meal and set the table with our brand-new Corelle. Every night was a chance to try a new recipe and/or plating method. My husband felt great, and I felt great for making him feel great. Until after supper. That’s when the guilt hit. The impetus, you ask? A sink full of dishes. Dishes that needed to be washed. By me — a person utterly drained of anything resembling energy. Luckily for me, my well-rested husband rolled up his sleeves and washed those dishes. Every. Single. Night. And I sat on the recliner, wiped out, feeling horrible for not being “the perfect wife.” Thankfully, with age comes wisdom. Nowadays, my husband’s helping is a given. I no longer feel guilty for being less than the surreal image of the doit-all wife. There’s only so much a human being can handle! Of course, we all — myself included! — dream of spotless sinks, smiling children and hot, tempting meals to serve to our loved ones, but so often we saddle ourselves with unrealistic burdens and then fool ourselves into thinking that our homes will be pleasant if we “just do one more thing,” not realizing that the smile of a well-rested wife and mother is what makes the home truly shine. If I could look back and share with the shanah rishonah me a bit of wisdom for the future, I’d tell her this:

138 / THE MONSEY VIEW / March 27, 2019 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484

WISDOM NUGGET #1: Don’t cry if you can’t do it all. No one can. There’s no shame in being human.

WISDOM NUGGET #3: Husbands can and should help. (Just don’t force, cajole or plead. That won’t be good for anybody!)

WISDOM NUGGET #2: Don’t set unrealistic standards for your future self. Seriously. When you’re knee-deep in toys when four kids need to be bathed and supper is only half made, you’ll resent any ill-timed nostalgic comments about the good ol’ days of table linens and gourmet food. Sometimes scrambled eggs will just have to suffice.

WISDOM NUGGET #4: Gratitude. As women, we are the primary caretakers and the mainstays of the home. Men aren’t naturally wired for domestic tasks, even though they certainly can do those tasks as needed. As much as you may dislike cleaning or cooking, it’s even more difficult for the average man! Appreciate any effort your husband makes to help the home run. Verbalize it.

But the truth is that it may actually be harder for a wife to accept her husband’s help than for the husband to do the helping. It’s difficult to chase away that guilt of being “less than,” despite those feelings having no good reason to be there. And yes, there are those who say that their sons, their budding talmidei chochamim, shouldn’t lift a finger, considering it bitul Torah or below their dignities — but there are plenty of stories of great talmidei I no longer feel chachamim and tzaddikim who have lifted their fingers to guilty for being counter those claims. less than the Personally, I have learned to let go of the guilt and emsurreal image brace the help of my husof the do-it-all band by observing a simple act that was done to impress wife. There’s no one. only so much Being extremely close to a very chashuve family, I’ve a human being spent many an evening in their home. One time, I was can handle! sitting on their couch where I had a view of both the seforim room and the kitchen. During a quiet moment, the dayan, the head of the house, walked from his place of learning and passed the kitchen. Glancing inside, he saw that there were a few dishes left over from earlier in the day. With no fanfare, he entered the kitchen, and seconds later the sponge was in his hand.

DRESSING YOUR WINDOWS. IN STYLE. WINDOW COVERINGS FOR THE MODERN HOME.

flairdesignstudios.com

From my vantage point, I watched as a chassidishe dayan washed the dishes his family had eaten upon. Not like a maid; like a malach. An angel engaged in avodas Hashem. Here was a tzaddik who saw both a need and the chance to help his wife. At that moment I understood that although we each strive to be an aishes chayil, we all live in our own realities as well. Some of us are blessed with the ability to seamlessly maintain a home, while others struggle and really need that helping hand. And sometimes it’s just a few dishes in an otherwise spotless home that make a difference. It’s okay for a husband to help. And it’s certainly okay to accept help when offered. It’s even okay to ask for help, should the need arise. And guess what? It’s okay to train our boys to help out at home! In fact, dare I say that it’s an investment in our sons’ future shalom bayis? Dear kallahs, newlyweds and even those who are many years wed: Learn to let go. It’s not all or nothing. You don’t have to do everything. As Shlomo Hamelech so wisely wrote: “Sheker hachein v’hevel hayofi…” It’s not the shiny floors and spotless toy closet that will make you the perfect wife. It’s the effort you invest, especially when you focus particularly on the opening and closing dictums of Aishes Chayil, to be careful with “gemalas’hu tov v’lo ra” (she treats him with goodness, never with evil) and to be an “isha yiras Hashem.” The rest of the gaps can be filled in as you go — with a guilt-free smile on your face and, perhaps, a husband at your side, broom in hand.

While we designed this program to run over three weeks, it can be customized to each boy’s bein hazmanim schedule. Mark off the tasks as they get done, and hold on to your charts, because the more charts you bring in, the greater your reward will be!

Hi, everyone! I don’t mean to scare you all, but it’s true. They say that after Purim comes Pesach. The past many years have proven that statement accurate, so I guess we’ll all go along with it. Dearest mothers! It’s the time of year when windows are flung wide open and the smell of spring permeates the air. It is also the time when the bachurim are home. As in, in your house. In every room. In every corner. It is also the time when we can thank them for rolling up their sleeves and getting some work done. And now it’s time for our annual Pesach contest (drumroll...), and this year it’s geared toward the bachurim who are just itching to help out around the house. Of course, helping to eat the cake fresh off the counter is no doubt the biggest mitzvah of all, but more on that later. Once your boys have finished their designated tasks (mothers, feel free to make changes to suit your needs), their completed forms can be brought to Nussy’s Cuisine after the last week of the program, on April 15 and 16, where boys will be treated to some delicious chometz they will no longer be able to get at home! Details will be announced in Issue 194 of The Monsey View. Let's get started!

144 / THE MONSEY VIEW

Day 1 Seforim Shank Grab some shmattes, furniture polish, all-purpose cleaning spray and binding tape. We totally and unbiasedly believe this is a labor of joy for you boys. It’s also a cinch to do! Of course, it goes without saying that if learning gets done while cleaning through the seforim, Nussy’s will throw in some extra pickles and sauerkraut! Get a ladder and do the outside top part first. Everything you keep up there is dusty and rusty and useless if you need a ladder to reach it throughout the year. Gently remove the dust and rust and discard unused items. Empty either two shelves at a time or all shelves at once. I personally like to clear all the shelves at the same time so I actually get to finish it, because clearing one shelf at a time can drag on a little bit. Spray and wipe down each shelf. Go though the seforim that get used on a regular basis. The other ones don’t need more than a

gentle wipe-down and a quick flip-through. Try putting them all back organized by topic and height. Don’t double-stack, as it ends up looking messy. Prepare a bag for sheimos. Empty bottom closet shelves/drawers. (You may want to enlist the help of a woman in the house, but you can do it!) Spray and wipe down shelves. Go through the items, get the permission you need to discard, and don’t

ask twice. Loose items (wicks and glasses, bentchers) should be organized in containers. Photos should be placed in boxes or in albums that are neatly lined up, and make sure whatever else has taken up residence there now has a place to call home. And… you’re done! And one step closer to your reward!

Days 2 and 3 Shed (or other storage place) Here, as well, we mothers are totally unbiased when we say that the shed is mamash a joyous place to spend some time reconnecting with the junk, er, I mean, great stuff that was totally forgotten about throughout the year. Now it’s time to get reacquainted! THE SHED, and I say it in bold lettering for a reason, is a place for THINGS. And we know how it all landed there — whenever anyone asks what should be done with any random item that isn’t needed or wanted in the home, the answer is simple: Put it in the SHED. That’s how it comes to be the place that houses the sukkah, Purim boxes, newborn clothes and school stuff ranging from pre-nursery scribbles to high school hashkafah lessons. And that’s why the shed is an invention that we Monseyers cannot live without. Assuming the s’chach doesn’t hit you on the way into the shed, you’re ready to start.

I would recommend buying containers before you even attempt organizing. Once you have those, it will be easier to maneuver around the shed. Designate a shelf for each part of the home, and place like containers on each one. Let’s take bedding, for example. Extra blankets and pillows should be organized in one large container, and other sleep items, like inflatable mattresses, can be organized in another container. These containers can then be placed side by side on a shelf labeled Bedroom Gear. Clothing should be organized on another shelf, with separate containers storing each size or stage. For example, one container should hold newborn clothing, another one sizes 6–12 months, the next toddler clothing, etc. Designate one container for Purim stuff, another for sukkah items, and another for Chanukah items. Label the shelf holding these containers Yom Tov Stuff.

The larger, bulkier items (like folding beds, tables and chairs) should be organized at the sides. Make sure to leave a clear walkway, so that all items should be easily accessible. There should be a step ladder in the shed for reaching higher shelves. Having one within reach will also motivate family members to put things back in place. The shed can stay neat if there are shelves installed, and smaller things get put into containers and labeled. The entire space can get a quick lookthrough and mini dumping on a regular basis throughout the year.

Look Good • Feel Good

Is it fair to say that this is the third totally enjoyable task to conquer? I mean, if you think about it, the thousands of screws and nails that are an absolute must on a daily basis are just begging to be sorted and divided. And the drill, with all of its bits and pieces finding their ways into each corner of the toolbox, also needs an organized little home. And the rusty pliers in need of some care, the paintbrush that has caked pieces of gray paint all over it — maybe they can just be replaced! WD40 — does it have an expiration date at all? Just wondering. Maybe, together with the chometz treat from Nussy’s, it’s time to treat yourself to a new toolbox? But only if the toolbox you own is older than you are. Otherwise I’m pretty sure it’s still in good condition. Choose a toolbox that isn’t too large (one like that gets messier quicker), but has compartments for specific tools. Keep handy tools, well, handy. On the top. The truth is, tools are really the bachurim’s domain, so I will let the mumchim go ahead and do their magic.

“Mommy, Dovy said they finished cleaning the dining room.” “Mommy, when can we make a bubble bath for the mentchies?” “Mommy, my whole class finished their whole house for Pesach!” It starts in a slow trickle, then gathers speed, and soon turns into an avalanche. My kids want to start cleaning for Pesach! And all Mommy says is “hmmm.” I’ll come clean here: I start cleaning for Pesach very late. We spend our Tu B’Shvats in Shevat and Purim in Adar. Even when the costumes are washed and sorted and curly ribbons are out of sight, the shmattes still don’t take over. I hear the whirr of vacuum cleaners from windows up, down, right and left of me. Trust me, I know Pesach is coming (I've been accused of otherwise in the past). But here’s the thing: I cannot stretch Pesach for so long in my mind. It just doesn’t work. To me, life is too busy to layer one month upon another. I try to just manage my days as it is. In the last two weeks before Pesach, the house

152 / THE MONSEY VIEW / March 27, 2019 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484

turns on its head and goes huff-puff, hustle-bustle. For two weeks, we can handle chaos. Supper is bagels and cream cheese, pizza, or even bread and peanut butter. Meanwhile, I tackle each room one day at a time in a simple, straightforward fashion: remove contents of each closet, wipe down the shelves, shake out the contents, and return. Repeat. The higher shelves untouched by young hands will be only checked for chometz, and a big pile of games goes straight into the mechiras chometz closet. In rare cases I will organize, but only if it’s a swift no-brainer. All year I’m a brutal disposer and things-purger, so organizing doesn’t have to happen on Erev Pesach. And so we go: remove, clean, return. The kids enjoy a lineup of day camps and trips of helping Tatty with Pesach errands. And a help it is; without those excursions, I couldn’t get Pesach done. On Pesach cleaning days the house is at its dirtiest. The floor might remain dusty and grimy from Shabbos to Shabbos; all that matters is that the rooms are purged of chometz.

I think I got the Rosh Chodesh Nissan idea from a school friend, who, way back in the day, told me that her father didn’t let any Pesach cleaning start until Rosh Chodesh Nissan. I guess the idea kind of stuck in my mind until I decided to adopt it. I will admit I do take it too far sometimes. In my protest against Pesach stress all the way back to Shevat, I try to prove to the world that life can and should be lived with peace of mind. One year we were invited to a Shabbos sheva brachos in Yerushalayim less than two weeks before Pesach. Great! But not only would we prepare for and make the long trip to Yerushalayim with our children, we would enjoy the works: mekomos hakdoshim in the morning, touring at noon… Until a very caring family member said: Stop! And I humbly nodded and admitted that the idea was absolutely nuts. It was Erev Pesach, and I had to use every spare moment of my Friday morning to get things moving. We’d leave the touring for Chol Hamoed. Oh, well. Two weeks before Pesach? I hear you thinking “stress.” I respect that people have differing approaches and stress is very individual; please do respect my way, too. To me, I’m cutting out stress for very many weeks. And in those final two weeks, things are hectic, but it’s a doable kind of hectic: it only lasts two weeks, and the goal is not too far. Think about it: We’re only studiously washing hands and shaking out crumbs for a limited time. We’re only shouting at the kids “don’t move from the table with chometz!” for two weeks. Oh, the kids. They want to clean for Pesach, too, you’re saying. What’s a Yiddishe home without the Lego bath or creating little pools of water in strategic places around the house with dripping shmattes? I usually choose a day when my blood pressure is at an equilibrium and we enjoy (or try to) a gezunte Pesach cleaning afternoon. It lasts until I finally yelp “no more!” Poor kids, they don’t get another chance at Pesach cleaning until the next year. I can hardly resist reminding the kids that if not for their very industrious job at making our home, uh, Pesach-free, I would not really need their “help.” What should I tell you, learning to “accept help” does take on new meaning. Now I’ll get off the soapbox and get back to the soap and bubbles. And let me turn up the music while we’re at it... This can be fun! I was newly married when the first “sfog hapeleh” arrived from Eretz Yisroel. A wonder sponge indeed, as we all soon learned. There was finally something that could put up a good fight against stubborn stains. Crayon marks on kitchen tables, mineral stains on sink surfaces, and scuff marks on woodworks were no longer a source of angst — now they could come off without much elbow grease! Come Erev Pesach, and even the most acclaimed scrooges will dip into their pockets and shell out the few bucks per package that these magic sponges cost. For how can Pesach happen without these stain erasers? How indeed was cleaning at all possible before they came around? Even my cleaning lady refuses to clean if I don’t provide her with plenty of sponges. Talk about the rising costs of cleaning help! At roughly a dollar each, and lasting — especially during this heavy cleaning season — through just a few minutes of use (you can go through several packages just cleaning the cabinets!), perhaps it’s time to explore a cheaper option. Because, yes, there is one! What are these sponges? What is their magical secret? It’s not actually magic, and I’ll let you in on the secret: These erasers are simply small rectangular pieces of melamine foam, usually with a cleaning agent in it. It’s not the detergent that makes them so tough on stains; it’s the actual sponge material — melamine — whose density and tiny pores make it a light abrasive. MELAMINE SPONGES are available in bulk for very cheap (to the tune of 10 cents a piece) at Walmart (may not be available in stores), Amazon and AliExpress, to name just a few. These are smaller than the sponges you buy, but they cost a fraction of the price! Once you have the sponges, all you need is a cleaning solution to dip them into, and you’re ready to scrub.

One simple cleaning solution requires just three ingredients: Borax, baking soda, and water. 1. Heat up about a ½ cup of water per sponge. 2. In a bowl, mix a teaspoon of Borax and a tablespoon of baking soda. Add the heated water and stir. 3. Place the sponge into the solution, allowing it to soak it up. Squeeze out some of the excess liquid, and you’re ready to clean! For spot cleaning, you can simply mix some water, Borax and baking soda in a spray bottle, and use it to spray on the spot before scrubbing with the sponge.

HILCHOS PESACH

The halacha says that one should start learning hilchos Pesach from 30 days before Pesach in order to familiarize oneself with the many halachos that accompany it.1 Therefore, this is an opportune time to look at a few halachos regarding chometz on Erev Pesach. Chometz on Erev Pesach Mid’Oraisa one is not allowed to eat or have hana’ah from chometz from chatzos of the day (not the night) of Erev Pesach.2 Fearing that people may mistakenly transgress the d’Oraisa on a cloudy day when one cannot clearly see what time it is, the chachamim prohibited eating chametz starting from two hours before chatzos (beginning of the fifth hour), and they prohibited having hana’ah starting from one hour before chatzos (beginning of the sixth hour).3 These hours are not necessarily sixty-minute hours; they are rather shaos zmaniyus that change according to the time of year. One therefore has to check the calendar to see what time they fall out every year.4 Eating chometz on Erev Pesach As mentioned above, from the beginning of the fifth hour (two hours before chatzos) one is not allowed to eat chometz. Therefore, one should brush one’s teeth, and preferably floss as well, before this time, because even a small amount of chometz is assur on Pesach. The poskim bring the story of someone who was very careful not to come to eat chometz on Pesach. On the night of Pesach he fell asleep and had a dream in which someone told him, “Woe is to the one who ate chometz on Pesach!” He woke up very disturbed. After falling asleep again he had another dream in which he was told that the chometz that he had eaten was a bit of bread that had been stuck between his teeth; when he ate the matzah the piece of bread got loose, and he swallowed it. From here we see how careful

162 / THE MONSEY VIEW / March 27, 2019 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484

one must be to clean one’s teeth.5 Selling or giving away chometz We mentioned above that from the beginning of the sixth hour one is no longer allowed to have hana’ah from his chometz. Therefore, from that time one can no longer sell his chometz to a goy or feed it to animals even if they are not his.6 After this time, one may not even give his chometz as a present to a goy, because the goy’s hakaras hatov is considered hana’ah.7 It must be pointed out that to give a present to a goy whom one doesn’t know at all and will have no connection with in the future can be a problem of lo sechanem, which prohibits one from giving matanos to goyim.8 Hana’ah from a goy’s chometz Having hanaah from chometz applies even if it is not one’s own chometz, therefore, starting from the sixth

1 See Tur, Beis Yosef, Shulchan Aruch 429:1. See Mishnah Berurah 429:1 for a summary of the opinions of whether this applies by other mo’adim as well. But everyone agrees that given that Pesach has many complicated halachos, one should begin learning hilchos Pesach from 30 days before.

This is the opinion of the Rambam and the Rosh, and according to the Gra, this is the opinion of the Shulchan Aruch. See Beis Yosef 443:1 where he brings other Rishonim who argue and hold that it is an issur d’rabbanan. The opinion of the Baal Hame’or is that it is mutar to eat it but it is a daas yachid and one is not allowed to pasken like it. See Mishnah Berurah 443:1, Shaar Hatzion 443:1 and Kaf Hachaim 443:1–2 for a summary of the opinions.

hour, one should not have hana’ah from the smell of hot bread baked by a goy.9 Burning and nullifying chometz Even though one is mevatel his chometz immediately after bedikas chometz at night, it is nevertheless good to do so again in the morning of Erev Pesach.10 And this is indeed the minhag. The reason for this is to nullify any chometz one has bought in the morning of Erev Pesach and the chometz that was left over from his night or morning meal that he didn’t nullify at night. (Even if he did have in mind to nullify it, it wouldn’t help because once he took it to eat it he was zoche it again.) Therefore, one should nullify his chometz again in the morning.11 Since sreifas chometz is a mitzvah that one must do with one’s own chometz, one should only do the bitul after sreifas chometz. Furthermore, since from the beginning of the sixth hour one can no longer have hana’ah from his chometz and therefore can no longer be mevatel it, one must make sure to perform both sreifas and bitul chometz before the beginning of the sixth hour.12

PAST PREDICTIONS Who hasn’t dreamed of technological inventions that make our lives easier — especially when it comes to deep cleaning for Pesach? Some of the previous century’s dreamers have had their visions come to life in the form of autonomous cars, induction stovetops that remain (basically) cool to the touch, cars that fly (yup, it’s really happening!), controlled temperature environments (baruch Hashem for AC!), and war being fought through the use of robots (drones, anyone?). On the flip side, other predictions bellied up, such as nuclear-powered vacuum cleaners, radiation-augmented vegetables of super size and radium heated homes. And, of course, that multifunctional housekeeping robot of everyone’s dreams has yet to make an appearance. But never fear: There are some inventions out there that can make the cleaning just a bit easier…

168 / THE MONSEY VIEW / March 27, 2019 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484

FLOOR CLEANING Do you find sweeping and mopping a time-consuming task that needs to be done multiple times a day? Treat yourself to the Neato Botvac, a self-guided vacuum that sucks up dirt even when you’re not home. Just program it to begin whenever you desire and off it goes! The Botvac maps its own path, taking into account obstacles and stairs. When the battery runs low, the Botvac heads back to its charging station for a recharge, after which it gets right back to work! The Botvac retails for between $400 and $700 or more, which might not seem bad when you consider how much work it’ll save you. If only it would last. Many reviews claim it dies beyond repair only a year and a half or so after purchase. Once your floor is swept up, turn on your Braava Robot to mop up messes and shine your floors. For only $299, the Braava will even clean your baseboards.

AUTOMATIC SHOWER CLEANER Fight bathtub grime with the push of a button. The Scrubbing Bubbles Automatic Shower Cleaner hangs from your showerhead. When you’re ready for a cleaning, just push the button and cleanser spritzes out. (I’m not quite sure how the cleanser is rinsed away, though…) This product has enjoyed popularity for quite a while, and with a price tag of less than $20, had many repeat customers. Nowadays, though, stock is limited and the remaining pieces are being sold for about $300…

NO MORE DUST PANS!

SUPER SCRUBBING POWER

Scrubbing for Pesach causing all your bones to ache? If you haven’t yet invested in a robotic sweeper and are still sweeping with a broom in hand, at least save yourself the bending over to pick up dirt. For those of you who have a central vacuum system, please treat yourself to the VacPan Automatic Dustpan Inlet. At only $22 and change, you’ll enjoy sweeping dirt directly into a hole in the wall and watching it get whisked away with a whoosh!

The highly rated SonicScrubber is a handheld tool that has several heads to tackle all of your cleaning jobs. About the size of an electric toothbrush, this tool provides the elbow grease while you simply guide it as it cleans. For under $25, this tool is one worth getting.

WINDOW WASHING The Winbot creeps along your windows, washing them as it goes. Utilizing a built-in fan that acts as a vacuum, it wipes away grime and leaves a shine. When it works. Reviews vary wildly, with some claiming it worked for them short term, others saying it broke their windows, and yet others saying it does a better job than professional window cleaners. You might be better off skipping the bot for this job.

GUTTER CLEANER

ANTI-BACTERIA BOTS If you’ve ever spent time on the pediatric ward in Westchester, you’ve likely seen a blue glow coming from vacated rooms. That glow is caused by a new generation of sanitizing bots that use the power of UV rays to destroy bacteria. Hospitals that have begun using these sterilization robots have seen drastic reductions in bacterial infections. One of these robots can cost upward of $80,000. Though not really practical for most homeowners, my guess for the future is that we’ll see pocket-friendly versions for personal use relatively soon.

Hate the idea of balancing on a ladder as you clean rotten leaves from your gutters? The iRobot Looj 330 is a nifty little machine with tank treads and a propeller that tosses debris right out of your gutters. You’ll still have to climb that ladder to put the Looj into the gutter, but it should make the job a whole lot safer and easier. The Looj runs at around $200.
