Handpicked Happening’s

Ever since our doors have opened, less than two months ago, we have received an

overwhelming positive and enthusiastic response by our many guests. Customers can’t believe their good fortune in finding beautiful, unique clothes at unreal prices! While most come to snatch a good find, some enjoy just to browse these stunning pieces, while others just like to relax on our royal couch… And still, there are many who are confused with this new concept and have questions about our interesting new place. As a service to all, we printed the popular questions so you can get the answer, too!

1)Is your store only for millionaires? Well, the brands we carry are usually purchased by people who can afford luxury, but we want to make beautiful clothes available to all! Our prices are 50-90% off the retail value so you can shop amazing bargains! Outerwear, shoes, and apparel start as low as $45 with magnificent simcha gowns starting as low as $200!

2)Are you sure this isn’t a knock-off? One thousand percent! Every item in our store goes through an authentication process to ensure the authenticity for your purchase protection. We will never sell any fakes, imitations, or knock-offs! That’s our promise to you or your money back.

3)How can you sell designer items so cheap? We collect our beautiful items from luxury department stores like Saks, Neiman Marcus, Bloomingdale’s and even Harrod’s. Some items are overstock, store returns, or past season merchandise, while others have small damages like a snag, missing button, or makeup stain. Highend stores can’t sell these and pass them on to us for bargain bottom prices!

4)How often do you get new arrivals? Every Sunday around the year. Check out the front rack for our latest finds!

5)I’m not really into designer brands is there anything you can offer me?

Handpicked is your place if you enjoy wellmade clothes and high-quality materials. It’s the place for you if want something unique instead of the same, same, same found in shops all over New York. And it’s definitely your place if you like a good catch at a great price!

6)You sell used stuff?

Approximately 25% of our items are pre-owned. They were not necessarily used but they were purchased and owned by individuals before it got to us. The condition of each item is very clearly marked on the tag so you know whether you’re buying something that’s new, pre-owned, or vintage.

7)What exactly is vintage?

Vintage is anything that is 20 years or older. The amazing workmanship of these pieces, some by retired talented designers, are hard to find in today’s mass-production era. The detailed designs and beautiful tailoring make them exceptionally special. Many are deadstock pieces from high-end stores, but some may have been previously owned.

8)I have many designer things; do you want to buy it? We’re sure they’re great items but we don’t buy any merchandise from private individuals.

Is there anything else you’d like to know? Walk right in – we’ll gladly clarify.

RE: MORE KASHRUS CONCERNS

(Inbox, Issue 196) Thank you for your publication every week. I read it with great pleasure. I was happy that someone brought up the importance of not opening packages with letters on them that can result in a chillul Shabbos. This has been bothering me for years. This problem does not only present itself with candy but also with snacks, lettuce, etc. I wish food manufacturers would make everything in bags with lettering in one area only to prevent the problem in regard to opening them on Shabbos. Thank you for bringing attention to this matter, A Concerned Consumer

NO COMPROMISES (Re: The Thing Better Than Sliced Bread, Issue 196) I’m writing to you after reading about bread makers and the writer’s experience with Himalayan salt not dissolving. I wanted to share with your readers that I use Dr. Faiman’s Himalayan salt for my bread maker and never experienced that problem. It might be that the writer uses a different brand. L.M.

(Inbox, Issue 196) I was so saddened to read last week’s letter about a hurtful experience a family had in a local park. I appreciated the writer’s openmindedness in that she didn’t paint all chassidim with the same brush because of this (hopefully isolated) incident. After reading the letter, I decided to take nothing for granted, since children can pick up attitudes from just about anywhere — friends, neighbors, etc. — even if a mindset at home does not reflect that at all. That’s why I sat down with my young kids and opened up a discussion about Yidden and our different stripes and I was thankful that I did so. Thank you to the letter-writer who took the time to spread this awareness. Waiting for Moshiach Too

Exceeding Expectations

Last week’s letter about children putting down others who look different from themselves pained me greatly. It pained me even more when the same thing happened on my block this week — and I noticed that my own child was part of the jeering crowd. Even though we have Litvish family whom we love dearly, my own child teased someone (who was a friend only one day prior) for being different. To hear that this happened hurts so badly. The only thing I can do it is: 1) Take the time to actively address bullying in general, and bullying those with different minhagim, specifically, and reinforce the message that we are all one family. 2) Supervise my children more carefully. Point #2 needs some elaboration. We live on a block that is growing rapidly, with more and more children arriving very often to share our sidewalks and yards. With this growth has come a certain mob mentality. The children get very wild when together and gang up on each other. I was horrified to see 20-something children surround a house, like wolves, and scream at a houseful of Yidden this past Shabbos. One even threw a stick into someone’s home. This is not okay. But I think many of us parents are simply not aware of what’s going on outdoors, as we let our children play outside unsupervised when they are “big enough.” But “big enough” physically doesn’t mean “big enough” emotionally, or in sensitivity. Dear parents: I’ve seen with my own eyes how children, even my own, have turned on other kids when we parents aren’t there to watch them and remind them to play appropriately. Let’s all take achrayus for this matter and show Hashem what playing nicely really looks like. We’re all one family, and our feelings should be reflected in a loving manner through our children. B.F.

AN INGENIOUS METHOD (Re: Out with the Chometz, Issue 195) I really enjoy reading your magazine each week. Thank you so much for the work that goes into it! When I read the article on how to store and warm up food for

yom tov (which was very well written), I realized I should share how our family warms up food on the hot plate. It is really simple, but ingenious, and will make you wonder (as I did, when my husband thought of it) why you didn’t think of it yourself! We fill a disposable pan with water, cover it with a lid, and place it on top of the hot plate. We then put the food on top of that. Simple! We use 6x10 deep pans for our small family, but a 9x13 should be just as good. The deeper sizes work best. If you don’t have lids at home, you can cover with an overturned pan of the same size, though this doesn’t work as well. Hope this helps! Nechuma L.

READ BETWEEN THE LINES I’d like to address an issue that has been bothering me for a while. I realize this should have best been written prior to Pesach, but I hope it will still help for the coming year. I’m referring to the labels written on chometz products that say, “Baked after Pesach ----.” I realize each family has their own minhag in this regard, whether it’s to buy chometz from a non-Jew after Pesach, to purchase it on Motzei Pesach from the grocery, or even no minhag in this regard at all. However, those relying on the labels should keep in mind that while the products may have been baked after Pesach, while it does reflect its freshness, it doesn’t mean that the grain has been harvested or ground after Pesach. The flour used to make those products may also have a chometz issue. N.L.

(Re: Excursions: Roosevelt Island Tramway, Issue 195) Thank you to the entire staff behind the scenes at The Monsey View, who make this wonderful weekly a great read. The Excursions booklet was a knockout (the size is so perfect for my pocketbook). It was well categorized and clearly stated the important details. We went to the Roosevelt Island Tramway (cable car), but had a hard time finding the Manhattan station. I wanted to point out that there is also a station on the island. The Roosevelt Island Tram Station is at the Traffic Circle on West Main Street in Roosevelt Island, NY. The grounds there are magnificent and parking is a breeze. You can also enjoy a walk by the water and a ferry ride (with the swipe of the metro card — $2.75!). Much hatzlacha, E.W.

Parshas K e d os hi m By: Malka Schneps

Shimon kept all of the mitzvos precisely. He never missed a minyan, ate only kosher food, kept a steady seder of learning, and observed Shabbos. And yet, something was lacking. Shimon never helped anyone when it wasn’t required. Whether it was a request for a ride to shul or to lend someone an item, Shimon was sure to refuse. Shimon would eat vast quantities of food whenever he felt like it — though always with a bracha. In short, Shimon kept the mitzvos as written, but was missing an essential, elusive point. Shimon is an example of the naval b’rishus haTorah. The Ramban explains that a naval b’rishus haTorah may be a glutton, but may find license in the Torah itself to “be drunk with wine and gorged with meat.” He might speak profanity without compunction since the Torah records no such prohibition, and in the process he would be considered a vile and dissolute person that is nevertheless acting within the boundaries of the Torah! Therefore this verse (of “kedoshim tih’yu”) is mentioned after the Torah has detailed all of the activities that are to be curtailed entirely, for it presents us with a general and comprehensive command that we are to be separated from overindulgence. In other words, after the Torah finishes telling us what is not permitted at all, we are enjoined not to overindulge in that

56 / THE MONSEY VIEW

which is permitted. This week’s parsha begins with Hashem telling Moshe to instruct Bnei Yisroel, “Kedoshim tih’yu... — Be holy...” (Vayikra 19:2). The Torah is filled with mitzvos, but this one line is needed to pull it all together and create the big picture. Without the injunction of kedoshim tih’yu, a person could make the mistake of living like Shimon, forgetting that there is a greater purpose. How does one go about making oneself kadosh? The Ramchal presents kedusha as the goal

Self-restraint is the key first step toward a life of kedusha. toward which we strive in our spiritual ascent. The Ramchal explains, “The matter of kedusha is twofold. It begins with service and ends with reward; its beginning is exertion, and its end is a gift. That is to say, a person must first sanctify himself, and he is then sanctified from the Heavens. This is what our Sages, of blessed memory, said: ‘If a man sanctifies himself a little, he becomes much more sanctified. If he sanctifies himself below, he becomes sanctified from Above’ (Yomah 39a).” (Mesillas Yesharim, Perek 16) If we work on our avodas Hashem and strive to perfect our middos with the aim of becoming kedoshim, then kedusha can be granted to

us as a gift. But it begins with our choosing kedusha. Rashi explains that to become kadosh, we must avoid defilement. The Ramban adds that becoming kadosh involves refraining from excess in permitted behaviors. The Torah does not give limits on eating, for example. In theory, as long as we make the correct brachos, it would seem that we are free to eat as much as we want. Selfrestraint is the key first step toward a life of kedusha. Ultimately and ideally, a person’s every action and choice should be made with purpose and intent. A true kadosh eats with the intent of maintaining his health so he can continue a life of avodas Hashem. He may also eat for the purpose of making a bracha. My son, who is a bachur in yeshivah, strives to recite 100 brachos each day. On most days this is relatively easy for a man who davens all three tefillos, but on Shabbos it can be a struggle. My son will often come to me on Shabbos afternoon asking if we have any food on which he can make ha’adamah, for example, or ha’eitz. In a case like this, he is not eating for pleasure, but for the purpose of stating the bracha. It is not easy to live a life of kedusha, but if we exert ourselves, the way is made easier. After all, Hashem takes a person in the way he chooses to go. It may not be easy, but it is surely worth the effort.

Large Turnout for Active Shooter Drill at Forshay’s Borov Shul Approximately 100 people turned up this past Sunday at Congregation Borov on Parker Boulevard for a three-hour active shooter training course held in response to the Pesach shooting at Chabad of Poway. The class, developed by the University of Texas in conjunction with the Department of Homeland Security, was given by Roy Adams, a retired law enforcement officer. Adams spoke about strategies for dealing with potentially dangerous individuals or terrorist situations, something that until recently had been considered unthinkable in the United States. Participants included both men and women representing the full spectrum of the Monsey community, many of whom left the course discussing security options for their own shuls. “It is important for people to be prepared,” said Zev Oster, a mispallel at the Borov shul. “People need to have a plan for situations like this, and the worst thing you can do is to freeze and deny that it is happening. Unfortunately, this is the world that we are living in, and you

have to be ready for things like this.” A small number of shuls in the Monsey area already have on-site security guards, and within one day of the Poway shooting, Governor Cuomo directed the New York State Police to increase their presence at shuls and others houses of worship statewide.

Unable to Access Key Records and Systems, Pomona Mayor Sues Former Officials Big problems continue in the relatively small village of Pomona, as newly elected Mayor Ian Banks has found himself unable to access bank accounts, computer systems and other key records, according to a lawsuit filed in the State Supreme Court in New City. Banks has said that the previous administration, which was accused of being hostile to the village’s new Jewish residents, has withheld crucial passwords and

access to Pomona’s computer systems, preventing him from effectively communicating with residents and completing the annual budget as required by May 1. Pomona is being “irreparably harmed” by the actions, claimed Banks, who hopes that the lawsuit will force former trustee Leon Harris and outgoing clerk/ treasurer Frances Arsa Artha to turn over the passwords according to their obligations under state law.

East Ramapo Announces Busing Changes for Upcoming School Year Hoping to cut costs on busing services, the East Ramapo School District is proposing earlier start times at many local public schools, a move that could one day filter down to area yeshivos as well. The plan could bring about $4.2 million of savings in transportation costs, reported The Journal News, but would also bring with it certain additional expenditures. Under the plan, unveiled at a budget meeting held

62 / THE MONSEY VIEW / May 8, 2019 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484

last week, some bus routes would be combined, and all public high schools in the district would begin 15 minutes earlier. While some elementary school students would be completely unaffected by the proposed plan, others could see their school day beginning five or even twenty minutes earlier than their currently scheduled start times. The move would necessitate the hiring of breakfast

monitors and would also have certain teachers and principals receiving bonuses because of the scheduling changes. East Ramapo officials have not said what those costs would be and have declined to comment on the matter. Consultant Gus Kakavus, who was hired to find ways for East Ramapo to economize on busing in February, said that the first step of his plan involved public schools only at this time.

“We had to start at the one part of the problem that we could control, which was school bell times,” said Kakavus. “We cannot dictate to the non-public schools what time they start or what time they end.” Kakvus acknowledged that future changes could also affect yeshivos. Savings recognized under the plan would be used for educational services, including hiring six bilingual teachers, providing security at elementary schools and covering the

cost of special education instructors and guidance counselors. East Ramapo’s schools superintendent, Deborah Worthan, said that she hopes that the changes will improve busing in the district, something she has been working on for the last two years. “We heard enough from families about the irregularities,” said Wortham. “If the bus was supposed to pick students up and the bus wasn’t there. For years we have heard this.”

CHAPTER THREE Recap: In 1944, a woman arrives at the Christian orphanage in Bratislava with her two-yearold child. She pleads that the orphanage take him in, and after Gustav begs for it, Theodore, the second-in-command of the institution, grudgingly agrees. The woman tells Gustav that the boy is Jewish, like Gustav, and that his name is Yosef Ludmir. She gives Gustav a paper with his information and the address of his uncle in Eretz Yisroel. In Yerushalayim, Elisheva visits her father in the nursing home and tells him about her financial woes. Yerushalayim

“You’re asking why, Tatty?” He ate while she spoke and folded his napkin over and over again. “We’re asking the same thing... I know that there are people for whom it is accepted that the parents of the couple pay for the first bris, but we never even thought about that. Then, a month before Miri had the baby, I went to a bris that the mechutanim made. Yaakov’s younger sister had a baby, and they invited us.” Elisheva’s eyes stared almost blankly at the fish on her father’s plate. “The mechuteniste made me feel very good. She’s a very warm woman; I’m happy for Miri that she has such a mother-in-law. As we were talking, she casually mentioned that they had ordered the hall and chosen the menu and made all the arrangements with the head waiter. And then she said, ‘Of course, if my Sarah would have wanted to make the choices, I would have left it to her, but she said that if we’re paying, then we have the right to choose.’” Elisheva smiled. “The mechuteniste quickly added that the other side had paid half, but because they live far away, she was left to arrange it all. And I’ve been worrying about it ever since.” She filled her father’s cup with seltzer. “Al-

most all of Miri’s salary goes to paying their mortgage on that tiny apartment. I really don’t think they can pay for a bris right now. But we can’t either! Part of my salary also goes to the mortgage, and to pay up debts from her wedding, not to mention what I need for Tzippy now... And even though people say that you can make a bris on a much smaller scale, something at home, it will still cost something. Where am I getting that money from? Another loan? What’s this expense going to come in place of? Devoiry’s root canal that we’ve waited nearly half a year to take care of? And anyway, where exactly am I supposed to make a bris in my house?” An outsider listening to this conversation would have surely thought that this daughter was trying to play on her father’s heartstrings, to extract as much money as she could from him. But both Elisheva and her father knew that this was not the case. Her father didn’t even have a hundred shekel in cash to give her. The money that he received for renting out his one-room apartment went straight into the account of the assisted living facility. His tiny pension and senior citizen allocation went to pay for his medications and other vital necessities.

May 8, 2019 / THE MONSEY VIEW / 69 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484

If he would have had what to give her, she would have already asked long ago. This bris was just a tiny drop in the huge ocean that was engulfing them. But it was this drop that felt like the last straw; it was making her windpipe contract to the point where she felt as if she were choking. Literally. Maybe it was because when the costs were necessities, things they had no choice but to pay for, it was easier to run around borrowing and repaying. But when it came to things that were only a matter of goodwill — why should she and Eliyahu have to choke more than they were already choking? Bratislava 5702/1942

The Slovakian director of the Lucius Jan Catholic Children’s Home was an avowed antiSemite. He never dreamed that there would be Jews among the young charges in his care, certainly not after the ruling party headed by Hlinka, his teacher and mentor, had managed to gain autonomy for Slovakia. But it was a fact, and the one responsible for it happening was his second-in-command, Theodore Heinke, a Slovak of German extraction. One morning, in March 1942, he appeared in the Home’s office and placed a frightened toddler on the rug. The child was at most three years old. The director wrinkled his nose. “Zhid,” he spat. “Could be,” Heinke said calmly, settling into an armchair. “But it’s all a matter of decision. If it bothers you to think about it, then you can also decide that he’s not.” “Where did you find him?” “Behind a gate.” He lit a cigarette and after a moment added, “In the name of fairness, I saw the Hlinka Brigades walking away from the street with a group of expellees. It’s likely his parents were among them.” The child sucked his thumb

avidly and looked at the two men. “So why didn’t you run after them to return the child to them?” the director burst out. “Where is your Slovakian patriotism? We are paying the Germans five hundred marks for every Slovakian Jew they deport for us, and you’re trying to ruin it?” “I’m trying to save the nation five hundred marks.” Theodore smiled crookedly. “It will be fine, Farash. Leave something to me.” “I’m going to inform on your unfaithfulness to the party heads.” “No, you won’t.” Theodore threw a cigarette at him. “Here, take one and calm down.” The director caught the cigarette in two hands and rummaged in his pocket for a lighter. “I didn’t do anything terrible,” Theodore said. “At worst, in a year or two, the kid will convert to become a Catholic, and that will be the end of the story.” “According to the racial doctrine, Jewish blood remains for eternity,” the director drawled. “Do you believe in the German racial doctrine, or in the Catholic religion? Because according to Christianity, a Jew can be converted to a Christian. You don’t need me, your deputy, to tell you that minor detail, right?” “Do you need me to tell you what every honest Slovakian priest whom you will ask that will tell you?” “You know what he’ll tell me? Whatever answer will be most profitable for him.” Theodore stuck out his long legs. “Right.” The director took a long puff. “So, how do I get to profit from taking this Jew?” “I’ll think of something nice.” “In cash?” “We’ll see. It’s wartime now, Farash!”

“I’m ready to wait a little while. But only a little while.” “Deal. As far as we are concerned, the child’s parents were probably killed in the recent bombings. The house was destroyed, and we have no documents for him. And this Home opened its doors to him with love and compassion, like they are supposed to open them before each and every person.” He stood up from the chair, not deigning to give his boss another glance. “Come, child,” he said. “And maybe take that thumb out of your mouth so that we can check if you’ve remembered your name?” The child raised dry eyes to him and stuck his left thumb into his mouth, too. “Forget it,” Farash said, looking at the child through slitted eyes. “It’s better that we shouldn’t know his name.” “You’re right, as usual. So what will we call him? For the paperwork, you know.” “Call him whatever you want. You’re in charge of arranging all of his documents. I won’t risk my status in the party for...” And he spat out the end of the sentence in a fierce whisper. “Of course, of course.” Heinke’s courteous smile remained unchanged. “It’s all on me, Farash. You can go back to your affairs.” He offered the boy his hand, and the child obediently went with him to the large, empty dining room. Without a word, he hungrily ate the bowl of soup that Theodore set before him. “More,” he said when he’d finished. “Your first word,” Theodore pointed out. “Not particularly polite, but at least I can understand it.” He filled another plate with thin potato soup. The child finished this portion to the last drop, as well. “Now.” Theodore dragged over another chair to the huge table and glanced toward the kitchen. The cook seemed busy washing the heavy enamel pots, and the noise of the running water blocked out their conversation. “What’s your name?” “Mama.”

Theodore Heinke chuckled. “Your name is Mama?” “Mama.” “And where do you live?” “Mama.” “I think I get the idea. Your family name is Mama, your father was called Mama, and you are Mama’s son...” He rubbed his right eyebrow. “Alright, let’s find you a bed. Come, Mama.” “Gustav is a better name for him.” The director was standing by the door, gnawing on the butt of the cigarette that Theodore had given him and pointing with his chin to the child. “At least this way you will remember at any given moment what the true reason that you brought him here is.” “A different name would be better.” “No,” the director said. “If I still have any word around here, this will be it. Gustav.” “Fine,” Theodore said submissively. “Come along, Gustav.” The director looked after them when they left the dining room. “I’m not to blame that he had a little one who died of tuberculosis, and he was called Gustav,” he whispered, loud enough for Theodore to hear. “And he shouldn’t think I don’t know about this soft spot of his.” Over the next few days, Theodore tried to extract some identifying information from the boy, but without success. Aside from the word “Mama,” the child provided no information. As the weeks passed, he loosened up and began speaking like the other children. But there wasn’t a word about himself. Fortunately, he spoke fluent German, which somewhat calmed the director’s tension about him. “Maybe he’s German, like you,” he told Heinke. To himself, Theodore thought that it was more likely that the child was Jewish and that the family had spoken Yiddish. Because of the area where they lived, their Yiddish had probably taken on the German dialect, which was very similar to the language they spoke at home.

Baked Chicken

BY: LEAH STERN PHOTO CREDIT: C. TARKIELTAUB Prepared pans of frozen chicken that are ready to bake are extremely handy, especially before a simcha or hectic season. They taste perfectly fresh out of the oven, even after frozen raw for an extended period of time. The chicken can also be baked overnight (if needed for a bris, for example). In that case, place frozen chicken in an oven preheated to 300° and bake until morning. May 8, 2019 / THE MONSEY VIEW / 79 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484

Most tangy chicken recipes use ready sauces. This one, with its fresh ingredients, is a cut above. To save time, saute extra onions any time a recipe calls for them and freeze for later use.

INGREDIENTS

Pungent Chicken

DIRECTIONS

6 chicken bottoms

1½ T. oil

1. Mix all ingredients and place in a 9x13 pan.

¼ cup sauteed onions

1 T. lemon juice

2. Place chicken over mixture.

2 plum tomatoes, chopped

½ tsp. salt

3 cloves garlic, crushed ¼ cup brown sugar

80 / THE MONSEY VIEW

½ tsp. pepper ¼ tsp. cumin (optional)

3. Bake at 350° for 3–4 hours. 4. Baste chicken with sauce after 1–2 hours. Frozen chicken needs an additional ¾ hour of baking time for it to defrost.

This method of preparing chicken is an old-fashioned basic. I have vivid memories of my grandmother, a”h, basting huge roasters of chicken for family sheva brachos. They resulted in a delicious, moist and flavorful dish.

INGREDIENTS

Paprika Basted Chicken

DIRECTIONS

6 chicken bottoms

1. Combine basting ingredients and mix well.

2 T. oil 2 T. water

2. Place chicken in baking pan and baste with mixture, making sure to cover entire bottoms, and also under skin.

3 cloves garlic, crushed

3. Bake at 350° for 3–4 hours.

2 T. quality paprika ½ tsp. salt ½ tsp. black pepper

t’s time to travel! Planning a trip brings with it an air of excitement, anticipation, and for some, a touch of anxiety. Because even after you’ve planned your itinerary down to the very last detail, you may be surprised to discover how many things could possibly go differently than scheduled. That’s why perhaps the first rule to bear in mind when planning a trip is: Expect the unexpected! When you travel, you are reliant on the airline to get you to your destination, following the timetable that your ticket and itinerary read. Circumstances both in and out of the airline’s control can impair their ability to provide the services they bound themselves to when selling your ticket. Luckily for the traveler, numerous laws have been enacted within the United States, in the European Union and also internationally, governing what the airline is responsible to provide during flight irregularities and how much compensation they must grant after the fact. Passengers are actually entitled to more compensation than most people would imagine! Data shows that as many as 92 percent of U.S. travelers are not aware of their rights. Familiarize yourself with a short synopsis of some of travelers’ rights — just in case.

DELAYED FLIGHTS

The long-awaited day finally arrives. At the airport, there is chaos when you learn that your flight has been delayed. Perhaps you will be missing a business meeting; perhaps a family simcha! Will you make it to your destination in time? One of the greatest travel nightmares is a flight delay. The airline is responsible to offer reasonable flight options to get you to your final destination, and though airport lines may be long, you

should eventually be serviced. You can hope for a new itinerary that is as quick and uncomplicated as the original. In addition to re-protection on alternate flights, when traveling through Europe you may be entitled to up to 600 euros if you arrive at your destination more than three hours later than scheduled. In the United States, if your flight has a tarmac delay, you are entitled to information, food and water. You will probably be offered vouchers for future travel. Know that accepting these disqualifies your right to receive

Tips

for Flight Delays • Find out the reason for the delay from airline staff. • Keep proof of the delay. Pictures of the departure board may work! • Record the exact arrival time. • Request meals and hotel accommodations, if applicable. • Keep receipts of any expenses incurred, as well as a copy of your boarding pass or ticket information.

94 / THE MONSEY VIEW

cash compensation. Most people, given the exhaustion and frustration involved, will opt for vouchers even if they are less valuable than money back. Legal rights are extended to the passenger, not to the person who paid for the trip. So if you’re traveling on a business trip or with a sponsored ticket, the compensation for flight disruptions is actually yours. Flight disruptions triggered by natural causes, such as weather-related issues or circumstances beyond the airline’s control, may absolve an airline from its obligation to compensate passengers. Missing a flight for personal reasons, such as arriving late to the airport, will not warrant compensation.

LAYOVER CHANGES CAUSED BY DELAYS

After spending two hours on the plane due to delays prior to take-off, you are worried about your connecting flight. Your kids are nudging, your food supply is dwindling, your nerves are taut. You wonder if you’ll have enough diapers to last through the now-extended trip… Sometimes a delay will cause you to miss your connecting flight, leaving you stranded in unfamiliar territory for unknown lengths of time. It is always advisable to allow airport staff to assist you with new flights. They have greater access and ability to get you re-protected at no additional cost. However, if they are slow to do so or if you are

Tips

for When There Are Layover Changes • Keep a record of your trip details, and request the same services as mentioned for travel delays. • Inquire about your baggage. Sometimes you can receive your bags during an extended layover. Also, you want to make sure they will arrive with you at your final destination. • Request the means to contact people at your destination, as per your rights. • If you’ll be staying at a hotel, make sure they will not cancel your reservation when you don’t arrive as scheduled. • As a frum traveler, be sure to pack sufficient food to be prepared for all eventualities!

dissatisfied with their offers, you may book your new trip on your own and request compensation retroactively. Just make sure to inform the airline of this decision so they won’t invalidate the remainder of your ticket! When booking your ticket, check on the length of the layover. Most airports require

Helpful Terms EXTRAORDINARY CIRCUMSTANCES: Airlines love this term! It gives them allowance to roll off the blame… Luckily for passengers, though, “technical difficulties” and airline staff strikes can no longer be used as such. Medical emergencies, bad weather and political unrest, among other situations, do constitute “extraordinary circumstances,” which would absolve the airline’s requirement to provide compensation to travelers.

UPGRADING/DOWNGRADING: When an airline can only re-protect you in a higher class than booked, such as seating you in business class when you paid for an economy ticket, they cannot charge you for this upgrade. Conversely, if you were booked in a business or premium class and are downgraded to a lower class during the re-protection, you can be reimbursed 30 percent to 75 percent of your ticket cost.

Legal Jargon Montreal Convention More than 130 countries have signed the 2003 Montreal Convention, which provides rights to travelers impacted by flight disruptions such as delays, cancellations, boarding denials and baggage issues.

EU Legislation EC 261 The most comprehensive set of regulations that strongly favors the passenger, EC 261 applies to all passengers traveling via Europe, regardless of their nationality.

U.S. Laws Much more limited than European laws, U.S. laws nevertheless do extend some protection to travelers departing from or landing in the United States. If the trip involves international travel, coverage under the Montreal Convention may apply.

RIGHT TO CARE: Depending on the situation, you may be entitled to help such as meals, hotel accommodations, transportation to and from the airport, as well as access to communications including two phone calls, fax and email access.

FINAL DESTINATION: Even if your itinerary includes a stopover, what really counts is the place where you are set to finish your trip. In case of flight disruptions, the airline must get you to the final destination on your ticket. As such, it is advisable to book a single ticket to your final point, rather than purchase separate tickets that include a “self-transfer.”

THE MONSEY VIEW / 95

a minimum of 45 minutes for a connection. In some airports, you need to go through customs during the layover. Sometimes you need to change terminals, which may involve a train or walking long distances. Changing airlines or taking the last connecting flight of the day are also points to consider.

CANCELED FLIGHTS You arrive at the airport, ready for your return trip and, oops! The flight departures screen has your flight number flashing a red, “CANCELED!” Without a feasible way home, you will be missing a day of work, not to mention the hassle, cost and inconvenience of the unexpected change in plans. When an airline cancels a flight for reasons within their control, such as technical difficulties or airline staff strikes, they may be obligated to provide financial compensation of up to $700, in addition to re-protecting you on alternate flights. Under European law, the airline must offer one of three options: refund of your ticket, the earliest possible replacement flight, or a new ticket to be used at a later date of your choice. You may be eligible for compensation even if the flight has been canceled before you left for the airport. Flights canceled less than 14 days prior to departure fall under these regulations.

96 / THE MONSEY VIEW

Tips

for Canceled Flights • Obtain written confirmation of the cancellation and its reason from the airline. • Request an alternate flight or full refund. • Request meals and hotel accommodations, if applicable. • Keep a record of the exact time you arrived at your destination. • Keep receipts of any expenses incurred. • Be sure to retain a copy of your boarding pass or ticket information. • Do not sign or accept any offers that may waive your compensation rights!

GETTING BUMPED Your friend has been “bumped,” your cousin has been “bumped,” and you’re wondering what that really means! Is it something you should hope for? Airlines often overbook their flights, selling more tickets than there are seats, because they assume that a number of passengers may not show up for the flight. Statistically, between 5 percent and 15 percent of passengers may end up being “no-shows” on any given flight. Though airlines are rightfully allowed to rely on these stats, it may result in passengers holding valid tickets being denied the right to board. The airline’s first response will always be to offer vouchers for partial compensation or even a free ticket to passengers who volunteer to be “bumped” off the flight. If you have been denied boarding due to no fault of your own, you may be entitled to compensation that supersedes the amount offered in airline vouchers.

Tips

for When Getting Bumped • Ask why you are being denied boarding. • Request alternate flights to your destination. In addition, you can ask for monetary compensation. • The airline should provide you with food, a hotel room and transportation to and from the airport, if necessary. Sometimes you must ask for these services if they are not automatically offered to you. • Retain a copy of your boarding pass and receipts of any costs you may incur. • If you voluntarily give up your seat in exchange for a voucher, you will not be eligible for further compensation!

Compensation does not apply if you were denied boarding because you did not have the necessary documents, arrived late at the gate, or were deemed a security, safety or health concern to the flight.

LOST BAGGAGE For two days before setting out for the airport, you have those suit-

cases open as you carefully select items to take along on your trip. But standing at the carousel, your anxiety mounts as you watch the bags circle round and round, with yours nowhere to be found. By accepting your baggage for carriage, the airline takes responsibility to return your bags to you upon landing. Airline liability includes damaged, delayed and lost bags. In certain cases, you may be entitled to as much as $3,500 in compensation! BEFORE you write off your aggravation during unexpected trip deviations, double-check your essential rights! You may be inclined to seek help from professionals experienced in handling post-trip claims so you can access funds that are rightfully yours.

Tips

for Lost Baggage • Be sure to retain copies of your boarding pass and checked luggage receipts. • Report the damage or loss right away. It is always best to inform the airline and fill out a property irregularity report before leaving the airport. • Keep receipts of any items you may need to replace before you are reunited with your bags. • File a claim for compensation with the airline. • If you have paid a baggage fee, you can request a rebate.

Free chips. Free chips plus free soda. Free chips plus free soda plus a free night’s stay in a five-star hotel. Can life get any better? If someone would offer me all of that today, I’d nod my head vigorously and say yes yes yes, pinching my arm for good measure. (Okay, not for the chips but definitely for the hotel. It wouldn’t even have to have a five-star rating. I’d take a starless room, as long as it had a reading lamp and no alarm clock.) But when we were served all of these privileges in the Tel Aviv airport five years ago, we didn’t feel treated at all. We felt frustrated, then agitated, and eventually frantic. It was the end of August, and we were flying home after a month’s stay in Eretz Yisroel. It wasn’t an enviable trip, not a vacation by any stretch. We’d gone for medical reasons: I suffered from a skin condition, and I spent the month soaking in the sun’s rays at the Dead Sea. In 125-degree heat, I wouldn’t call it fun. Although we managed to squeeze in a bit of sightseeing between the hours on the beach and over the weekends, by the time the month was over, my husband, I and our antsy toddler were at the peak of exhaustion, and all we could dream of was home. Our own beds, our own closets, our own washing machine. Over the month, we’d stayed in various dirahs and hotels throughout Eretz Yisroel. During the week we stayed in Arad, a half-hour bus ride from the Ein Bokek beach, and every weekend we traveled to another location to spend Shabbos. That meant repeatedly packing and unpacking our luggage, lugging it up four flights of stairs in elevator-less buildings, and keeping track of whose socks — washed or otherwise — were in which suitcase. By the time we arrived at the airport early noon on Thursday — with three suitcases, three carry-ons, and one very whiny two-year-old — we were counting the minutes to boarding the plane and putting the entire draining trip behind us. I embraced the knowledge that the next time we would unpack these suitcases, it would be into our own closets. Or so I thought. “Hey, why is our flight blinking red?” I asked my husband suddenly. He looked up at the screen. And then looked at me grimly. “Delay,” he said. Okay. A delay. Delays are normal. We’d waited a month, we’d wait another fifteen minutes. No big deal. “It doesn’t say how long, does it?”

He shook his head. We waited. We waited some more. We waited and waited and waited, shifting in the hard plastic seats of the airport terminal. I opened one carry-on, took out tuna sandwiches. My husband walked up to the counter to ask what’s happening. After five minutes, he headed back. I didn’t like the expression on his face. “Mechanical problem in one of the wings. They estimate a two-hour delay.” Fidgeting took on a whole new meaning. That’s when the carts rolled in. Free chips and free soda — confetti. At least our daughter stopped whining. To think that we could help ourselves to as many free chips and soda as we pleased. When the two hours were up, they estimated another hour. And then another. At some point our daughter conked out on two plastic chairs. And then, after yet another “one more hour,” the flight attendants approached the restless crowd. “The aircraft’s problem was fixed,” they reported. “We’re boarding!” Cheers went up along with a rush of carryons and empty soda cans. Yehi ratzon, shetolicheinu l’shalom… At last, we were sitting in our seats, carry-ons stowed. We buckled our seatbelts and watched the safety demonstration as the plane started taxiing over the tarmac. We were off! Or were we? The rolling slowed and then stopped. Traffic on the runway? We waited. A few minutes later, the flight attendants started walking down the aisles. “They’re doing one more inspection,” they informed us. Once again we waited, until the flight attendants approached us. “The inspection is done, but the flight is canceled.” Just like that. No flight. No going home. The reason we couldn’t take off was because with the lengthy delay, the pilot’s time had run up. According to regulations — and logic — pilots have time frames during which they could be airborne, bookended by hours designated for sleep. Unfortunately for us, the flight team only realized when we were on the tarmac that our pilot’s shift would be up midflight. Okay. Okay. I looked at my daughter, who had I’m hungry plastered across her face, and repeated to myself, okay. After disembarking, we were told that our flight was rescheduled for early the next morning. The airline would put us up in Leonardo Boutique and charter us back to the airport in time for our flight. With rising panic, we watched our fellow disgruntled — and obviously secular — passengers board the bus that would take them to the hotel. It was Thursday afternoon. Shabbos was a mere few

hours away. What were we to do? We shared our problem with the airline personnel. They offered us the option of rescheduling our flight and staying in Eretz Yisroel over Shabbos. Sounds like a dream? Normally, yes, what could be more beautiful than a bonus Shabbos in Eretz Yisroel? But coming off our harrowing trip, the idea of spending Shabbos anywhere that

Not happening. There were other frum passengers on our flight, and we urgently consulted with each other. The lucky folks who had booked tickets through travel agents were able to get onto another flight that night. We, who’d scraped Expedia for the best deal, didn’t have that option. We stood around our luggage at the airport’s exit, watching the last flow of passengers board the bus, completely lost. “Did you decide what you’re doing?” the air-

line reps asked us. We shook our heads. We’d called relatives in Eretz Yisroel, asking for advice, but other than graciously extending invitations for us to stay with them, they couldn’t help us. Then my husband started doing the math. If the flight took off at 7:00 a.m., it meant that with a seven-hour time difference, we’d land in JFK at 12:00 p.m. New York time. The Shabbos zman was late. Were we allowed to fly on such a schedule? There was only one way to find out. My husband called his rav, who listened to all of our adventures and paskened that if the plane takes off on time, then yes, we may take that flight. The reasoning was that once you’re airborne, there are no concerns about delays. And if there is a delay before the flight, well, we’d have to get off the plane. At that point, the bus taking the passengers to the hotel had left the airport. We were told to take a taxi, whose cost the airline would later reimburse (they never did). We joined the group at the hotel an hour later, ravenously hungry and dizzy from fatigue. At least a porter delivered our luggage to our room. There were only several hours left before the bus would come pick us up and take us back to the airport, but we were going on empty and had to find a meal before going to sleep. Not an easy feat in Tel Aviv, we discovered. We walked some distance to reach a supermarket, where we hunted the aisles for kosher food. We found canned corn and crackers and made a meal of it. With no time to squander on exploring the hotel’s amenities, we sifted through our suitcases for toothbrushes and changes of clothing, then

turned in for whatever was left of our night. Three o’clock a.m. found a group of bleary-eyed travelers dragging luggage out of the hotel, starved for coffee. We wondered why we had to be at the airport three hours before boarding, but if that was what the airline had arranged, who were we to question them? We certainly wouldn’t risk missing this bus. Oddly, our daughter was in the greatest spirits, romping around, thrilled by all the action. “What a trooper,” the passengers commented. Yeah, well, we’d have preferred to see the kid sleeping in her crib right then. We felt like we were on repeat mode, checking in our luggage, having our passports examined, passing security, and once again settling into those hard plastic chairs at the gate. But this time, we actually boarded the plane on time and our flight took off without any drama. We landed a half-hour earlier than estimated. As soon as we touched ground, we called our worried parents to assure them that we’d arrived, safe and sound, then raced through baggage claim, flagged a cab and schlepped our suitcases one last time. I lit candles in my own leichter that evening, right on time, on a beautifully set Shabbos table. I’d never appreciated my cozy little apartment as much as I did at that moment. It was more beautiful than any hotel in the world. To compensate for our aggravation, the airline offered $200 toward airfare to each passenger of that canceled flight, to be used within a year. We never redeemed the offer because we didn’t fly anywhere within the next year. Would you?

“Shoes off! This way! Place everything into the tray.” “Coat off. Put all food in this tray. No, not the laptop; that should be separate!” Passengers hurriedly unzip their luggage, shrug off their outerwear, and place all of their belongings into the tray, scrambling to do the bidding of the TSA officers who rush them along, silently grumbling at the annoyance. So overwhelmed are they by submitting their goods and chattels for checking that they sometimes forget that TSA agents are only doing their job in order to keep them safe. LIFE AS A TSA AGENT is far from glorious, and there are plenty of reasons on which to blame the high employee turnover rates in this field. The perpetual stress these officers are under as they prepare for danger and stay on alert; the rigor-

Many TSA agents won’t even reveal what their real job is when asked, and instead answer vaguely that they work in security! And despite working in the airports, it’s all work and no perks. TSA officers get none of the flying benefits that other airline employees enjoy.

An Aeroflot airliner, the Sukhoi Superjet-100, made a hard landing on Sunday and burst into flames 30 minutes after a normal takeoff, killing 41 people. According to the 37 survivors (among them 4 crew members) who managed to flee via escape chutes in the front section, the plane was struck by lightning midair, knocking out communications. The plane took off from Moscow, headed to Murnansk, but then returned to the airport and caught fire upon impact. Investigations are underway, since a pilot error is being considered as a possible cause. The plane’s black boxes are said to have remained intact and are under investigation. Some aviations experts also question why the lightning strike knocked out communications, as modern aircraft are designed to withstand storms. Russian transport ministry has decided against grounding Superjets-100s, saying there are no obvious signs of design default.

Lion Air Flight 610

The Boeing 737 MAX is another airliner that has recently made headlines after two of them crashed in several months’ time. These two recent plane crashes — Lion Air Flight 610, which crashed in Indonesia on October 29, 2018, and Ethiopian Airlines Flight 302, which crashed in Ethiopia on March 10, 2019 — prompted the FAA, as well as numerous aviation authorities around the world, to ground the 737 MAX. In the U.S., all Boeing 737 MAX flights through August 19, 2019, were canceled. The accidents killed a total of 346 passengers and crew members on both flights. Each of the airplanes were less than four months old.

Ever wondered why airline food is so universally disliked? There may be a reason for that, and it may have more to do with where the passengers are eating than what the passengers are eating… Apparently, the pressurization at high altitudes affects the function of our taste buds, with the ability to perceive sweet or salty dropping about 30 percent.

Is a rating of one star even worthy of that star? According to reviewers, North Korea’s own Air Koryo rates exactly that, and is the only airline in the world with such embarrassingly poor rating.

El Al airlines has the more praiseworthy distinction of being one of the most secure airlines in the world. To cite some security measures El Al employs: Their airplanes are equipped with anti-missile defense systems, have reinforced steel floors separating the passenger cabin from the baggage hold, and each international flight carries an undercover — and armed — sky marshal.

Teddy Roosevelt was the first president to fly in an airplane, which he thought was a “bully experience.” He told the pilot afterward, “I envy your professional conquest of space.”

According to the Convention on International Civil Aviation — which established rules of airspace, aircraft registration, safety, etc. — aircraft in transit are exempt from paying taxes on fuel — wherever they may land. Fuel up!

The pilot in command of any given flight is referred to as the captain, and the copilot is the first officer. The captain of the plane is in charge of making major decisions, handling emergencies, and managing the crew. While the first officer’s level of training is identical to the captain’s, each flight requires both positions to be filled for safety purposes. The captain may have the controls for a greater portion of the flight, but the first officer will take over at some point during the trip.

122 / THE MONSEY VIEW / May 8, 2019 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484

Most airlines request that a flight’s pilot and copilot refrain from eating the same meal during the flight. The reason? To prevent a case where both pilots fall ill with food poisoning. While the chances of this happening are slim, it has happened before: In 1982, a flight heading to Lisbon from Boston had 10 crew members falling ill after eating some pudding that had gone bad. The airplane turned around and returned to Boston with no further incident, but the story made its way into air travel history anyway, and airlines prefer no longer to take the chance...

The captain of a flight is more than just the pilot of the plane; like a federal official of sorts, a captain has the authority to arrest passengers, write fines and even draw up the will of a passenger in mortal danger.

While some may assume a flight attendant is simply there to hand out food and drinks, that is far from the truth. Flight attendants are on board to keep passengers safe, and that’s the reason they’re trained in all sorts of procedures, including what to do in case of hijacking, fire or in the event of a medical emergency. Additionally, flight attendants also learn airline codes and relevant terminology, all about the aircraft they’ll be working on, time computations, and so on. Some flight attendants also double as pre-flight check-in personnel. Another flight attendant misconception: A crew of attendants may sometimes seem like one unit to the passengers, but it may be very possible that this flight was the first time they’ve worked together! Since airlines employ thousands of flight attendants and fly to over a hundred destinations on a regular basis, the members of each team rotate constantly.

A PILOT AND SOME PASSENGERS WORTHY OF MENTION… In 1981, American Airlines was in desperate need of funds. Finally, they hit upon and implemented a grand new idea: They’d sell unlimited lifetime passes to their wealthiest customers, and rack up some badly needed cash! When the program ended — for obvious reasons — a little more than a decade later, 28 individuals had purchased this AAirpass, for a neat $250,000. Oh, and an additional $150,000 for those who wanted another pass for anyone wanting to hop along. Sounds great, right? Only problem was that two of those lucky purchasers, Steve Rothstein and Jacques Vroom, were taking the “unlimited” bit of the deal a little too seriously, and they were flying across the country to catch up with a friend or grab a sandwich. When American Airlines realized that these two fellows were costing them over a hefty million dollars a year, they quickly gathered their lawyers together and forcefully terminated the contracts of these two overly enthusiastic fliers.

This tale is about another too-enthusiastic passenger. In 2013, a flight heading to New York from Los Angeles made an unscheduled stop in Kansas City. Not because of an aircraft malfunction, but rather because the crew had to get rid of a disruptive passenger — who wouldn’t stop singing.

After a bomb destroyed Pan Am Flight 103 in 1988, Jim Swire, a distraught father of a woman who died in the crash, later took matters into his own hands. In order to prove a point about the laxity of airline security, Swire boarded a British Airways Jim Swire’s fake bomb flight a little more than a year later — with a fake bomb in tow. He traveled, along with his bomb, from London to New York, and then from New York to Boston. Point proven.

During a British Airways flight heading from England to Spain, pilot Tim Lancaster faced the most terrifying few minutes of his life. After a 17,000-foot climb, the left windscreen of the cockpit blew off, and Lancaster was pulled out of the window head-first due to the rushing air. As the first officer fought to get the aircraft under control, a flight attendant grabbed hold of Lancaster’s feet and struggled to keep him in the plane. After a frenzied twenty minutes of panic and terror, the first officer managed an emergency landing, and even though Lancaster suffered considerable frostbite, fractures and shock, he lived to tell the tale... and returned to the cockpit a mere five months later.
