Dear Monsey View, What a beautiful paper you have! As a resident of Brooklyn, I picked up your paper when I was in Monsey for an appointment, and I was extremely impressed by the quality, content and layout of the weekly. I wish we’d have something of this caliber where I live! Being the mother of three children on a gluten-free diet due to celiac, I felt your issue was directed to me. Though not much of the information was new to me, being that we have been on a gluten-free diet for ten years now, I did appreciate the feeling of not being alone in this unique lifestyle. I would like to offer four pieces of advice for people in the same situation: 1. Planning is key. Gone are the days of having a free (from cooking) night or weekend. Always call hosts or caterers in advance and bring along food if you need to. 2. I discovered that when adding instant pudding (even half a pack) to a cake, the texture miraculously, amazingly resembles gluten! 3. Brown rice flour wasn’t mentioned, and it has great health properties. I always use it together with another, fluffier flour. 4. Mixing flour types is key when baking. Always use a flour blend or use two or more types of flour in whatever you are baking. Hatzlacha to all, Y.W., Brooklyn
Although I’m not officially on a gluten-free diet, I try to avoid grains as much as possible, and have found ground chia seeds (ground in a coffee grinder) a super-healthy substitute for bread crumbs. It creates a similar texture to that of flax seeds, but without the aftertaste. If a recipe calls for a cup of breadcrumbs, you usually need to use only M&S SHOE REPAIR

RE: “SAFETY ISSUES REGARDING HITCHHIKING” (ISSUE #121) I was shocked to see not one, but two, letters defending, and even encouraging, hitchhiking in Monsey, even though the letter they were responding to had clearly pointed out that hitchhiking is illegal in NY State, and even quoted from the law itself. Nobody has a right to decide which laws they will or will not follow, or if certain parts of town are safe enough to disregard democratically enacted laws. If a person chooses to live in our democracy, they are bound to follow the laws our representatives enact, even if they don’t like them. If a person wants to “do a chesed,” let them organize car pools and ride sharing. Breaking the law isn’t an act of chesed. It’s an act of criminality. Staying in Line
RE: HITCHES AND SHORTCUTS (ISSUE #121) I’ve been following the discussions about both hitches and shortcuts, and I’d like to add two points that haven’t yet been expressed, both of them involving safety. While of course it is a tremendous chesed to give rides to those who do not drive, there is an inherent element of danger for both driver and passenger. Mothers and wives, do you know who your loved ones are climbing into the car with? How do you know that they are safe people? How do you know that they won’t use those moments to instill foreign thoughts into other Yidden’s minds? This is a crazy world we live in, and one cannot be too careful. The same questions apply to drivers picking up hitchhikers. Who said they are safe and innocent? Clothing can be purchased and worn by anyone; black and white doesn’t automatically issue a stamp of safety. Similarly, I want to share a story that happened to a driver I know. This driver had a kind heart and offered a hitch to a local rebbi, and on their way they had a minor accident. The hitchhiker suffered no injuries, but proceeded to sue the driver for a million dollars. There are opportunists among us, sad to say, and we should be aware of it. In regard to shortcuts, I’ve been privy to hear stories I’d rather not have heard. While shortcuts make all of our lives easier, there is also a great element of danger there. While I won’t get into details, I will say this: Parents, make sure that your children and teens are not using shortcuts without parental supervision and that you have cell phone service when in a shortcut. There have been situations that have cropped up b’davka in shortcuts due to their secluded nature. May Hashem protect us all! Mrs. Knows Too Much
RE: PRIVATE PROPERTY (ISSUE #121) All of us growing up in Monsey fondly recall the many shortcuts that were used, to the pride of the homeowners. (Who doesn’t remember Mr. Sachs at Jill Lane corner Rita Avenue shoveling his shortcut for the many passersby?) I remember an incident that occurred at such a shortcut. My father used to walk to kollel every morning, and he would use a certain shortcut. One morning, as he was about to enter the shortcut, he noticed a “No Trespassing” poster in front of the house, so he turned around and

walked a different route, which added another ten minutes to his walk. The following morning, as he was passing that house, he found the owner waiting for him. “The reason we put the poster up,” the man said, “was that it shouldn’t be our achrayus if anyone gets hurt, chas v’shalom, but it is a great honor for me that you are neheneh from my property. Please continue using it.” That shortcut still gets used by many kollel yungeleit, yeshiva bachurim and cheder yingelach every day. I do not mean to encourage trespassing or ruining of property, but rather show appreciation to the homeowners who understand what a great zechus they have daily. A manicured lawn and green grass is here now, but the mitzvah is l’netzach netzachim. May we all be zoche to bring the geulah shleimah closer through chesed and ahavas yisrael. A Resident
A BITTERSWEET TIME OF YEAR Dear Editor, A few weeks ago you published a letter from a mother complaining about all the candy that’s given out on Simchas Torah. Let me tell you my side of the story. You go to shul after getting your children dressed. You stand and watch your sons and your husbands dancing. You stay for leining and watch as your precious yingelach get their aliyos. That’s beautiful! However, there are some of us who don’t go to shul because we have no reason to; some of us do not have a husband or children to watch. I choose not to sit home and cry, though that’s what I’m doing right now because I am in so much pain. Instead, I give out pekelach to children who go to shuls in the area where I live. Yes, I spend hundreds of dollars and between 12 and 24 hours packing them. The brachos that your child makes on each of those lollipops, taffies and cookies can bring hundreds of yeshuos to people who need refuos, children and shidduchim. I do not give them out to make your lives harder, but rather because the brachos of children are extremely powerful. That’s why every child gets one with a smile and a cheery gut yom tov. I don’t have children to wish gut yom tov to. I don’t have children whose brachos I can answer amen to. Your children are the only ones I have until one day I will be zoche to have my own. With tears and a very heavy heart, Still Waiting EDITOR’S BULLETIN: The Monsey View is seeking past photos of Monsey stores and shopping scenes. As told to: Basya Lev
MANY YEARS AGO, when I was first married, I did not sift flour. At one point, however, there was a problem with worm-infestation and I began to sift the flour prior to use. I found handsifting difficult so my husband bought me an electric sifter, which worked great. When it broke, I went back to hand-sifting. Years passed, and I decided it was getting to be too much. I hadn’t seen or heard of worms in any bags of flour, and I made up my mind to finish sifting the bag I was doing and then no more sifting until I asked a sheilah. Maybe it wasn’t even necessary! Toward the end of that bag, I found a worm! It was the first time in all my years that I found one. I saw it as a sign that I should continue sifting flour, no questions asked.

THE INSIDE NUTRITION BY TANYA:
EDITION CHAPTER 12
I have written a lot about the passion I have for helping people lose weight and feel great. You may be wondering what is so exciting about my job. Here are a few examples of actual clients’ profiles. You will see what I mean when I say that my job is incredibly meaningful and rewarding. Some identifying factors have been changed to protect client privacy, but the actual gains and losses have not been changed at all. Take my client named Shira. Shira came into my office in June of 2017 with concerns about a medical condition that typically causes weight gain. To compound the issue, Shira was already over 50 pounds overweight and was nervous about her health. She came in weighing 196 pounds, and we set a goal of not exceeding the 200-pound mark while she was dealing with this condition. We provided her with a full food plan that would nourish her while still allowing her to keep within this goal. Take a look at her progress below:
By: Basya Kovacs
7/4: 196 lbs. 7/11: 189 lbs. 7/25: 188 lbs. 8/8: 186 lbs. 8/22: 185 lbs. 9/5: 182.5 lbs. 9/13: 182.5 lbs. 9/20: 182.5 lbs. 10/2: 182.5 lbs. 10/20: 183 lbs. 10/27: 181 lbs. Shira is now headed for the 170s! Rather than maintaining her weight, she lost consistently despite summer, which tends to throw people off of their routines, despite yom tov season, and despite having a medical condition that is known to cause weight gain! She accomplished this in a healthy manner, without deprivation. Guiding and sup-

porting Shira and watching her develop healthy habits has been a privilege for me. Here’s another example. Moshe came into my office almost a year ago weighing 312 pounds. We set a goal of 265 pounds, mostly because I didn’t want to overwhelm him with the idea of losing over 100 pounds. Take a look at his progress: 11/22: 306 lbs. 12/6: 299 lbs. 1/3: 286.5 lbs. 2/12: 273 lbs. 3/19: 267.5 lbs. 4/23: 262 lbs. 5/14: 258.5 lbs. In mid-May, Moshe reported to me that his blood pressure was down and his doctor was thrilled. His weight loss wasn’t speedy, but it was consistent, and we set a new goal of 240 pounds. His progress continued. 5/28: 257.25 lbs. 6/18: 253.25 lbs. 7/10: 252.5 lbs. 8/21: 249 lbs. 9/18: 246 lbs. 10/23: 243 lbs. It is now almost exactly a year since Moshe started his weight-loss journey. His progress has continued, and without any extreme dieting or surgeries, Moshe is set to hit his new goal of 240 before his one-year anniversary of joining Nutrition by Tanya. This means a weight loss of approximately 75 pounds in one year! What an honor to be able to work with a client like this! Of course, not all of my clients lose consistently. Take this client’s profile, for example: Devorah, a grandmother 26 times over, struggled with
her weight her entire life. When she started with us in July of 2016, Devorah had been gaining steadily and weighed over 200 pounds. Here is a chart of her progress: 7/1: 202 lbs. 8/11: 191 lbs. 9/27: 191.5 lbs. 10/6: 192.5 lbs. 11/2: 191.5 lbs. 12/21: 190.5 lbs. 1/24: 188.25 lbs. 2/19: 186.75 lbs. 3/8: 190.5 lbs. 4/23: 191.5 lbs. 5/3: 190.25 lbs. 6/12: 193 lbs. 7/5: 193 lbs. 8/4: 193 lbs. 9/19: 192 lbs. 10/22: 197 lbs. You may wonder what is so special about a client like this. It doesn’t seem like she has really made any progress at all! I see it differently. I see someone who has struggled with her weight her entire life and has committed to not letting her weight get any further out of control. Although her weight loss hasn’t been consistent, she has continued battling and has never gone over 200 pounds. In Devorah’s own words: “If I wouldn’t be coming for my weigh-ins, my weight would have continued skyrocketing higher and higher. At least now I know how to get things under control.” I agree with her, and I know she will lose the pounds she put on over yom tov. This is why my job is so thrilling. On a daily basis, I am privileged to support, guide and encourage people who are fighting the constant battle for their health and well-being. I am so proud to be a part of it.

NO GENERICS
Parshas Chayei Sarah
By: Malka Schneps
MY FATHER HAD PUT HIS HOUSE on the market, and an architect came along who was interested in purchasing the home. My father and the architect negotiated a price, and they shook hands. When word of the sale reached a local real estate agent, she urged my father to back out of the deal, telling him that she could get him at least $30,000 more in a heartbeat. My father informed her that it was too late — he had already sold the house. She asked if they had signed anything, and he replied that they had not signed anything, but they had shaken hands. Breathing a sigh of relief, the agent told him that in real estate there are no oral contracts, only written ones — he could legally back out of the sale and sell the house for more money to someone else. My father responded, “I know the law, but I gave him my word. No amount of money will convince me to go back on my word.” In this week’s parsha, Avraham Avinu purchases M’aras Hamachpela as a burial site for Sarah Imeinu. As Avraham negotiated the sale, he declared, “…b’chesef malei yitnena li b’soch’chem la’achuzas kaver. — … for its full price let him give it to me in your midst for a burial property.” (Bereishis 23:9) The Yismach Moshe points out that the word b’soch’chem is not entirely necessary, as Avraham could have said, “For a full price let him give it to me for a burial property.” So why did he add “in your midst” to this statement? The Yismach Moshe answers that sheker could never come from the mouth of Avraham Avinu. Avraham Avinu knew that M’aras Hamachpela’s true value was beyond all fortunes as M’aras Hamachpela is the pathway to Gan Eden (Zohar) and Adam and Chava were buried there (Gemara Eruvin 53a). Therefore, to say that Avraham would purchase the site b’chesef malei — for its full value — would not have been entirely true. However, it was true that to the people with whom he negotiated, M’aras Hamachpela was not worth more
than its real estate appraisal. It’s true preciousness, which is worth more than all the money in the world, held no value to them. Therefore, he added the word b’soch’chem, so what he was really saying was “give it to me for the full price of what it is worth to you.” Emes is one of the three foundations on which the world stands. (Pirkei Avos 1:18) The world was created with emes — the last letters of the words “Bereishis bara Elokim…” spell out emes. The first, middle and last letters of the aleph-beis spell out emes. (Menoras Hame’or, Chapter 35) The first question we are asked by the beis din shel ma’alah is whether we were honest in our business dealings. (Shabbos 31a) The very letters of the word emes stand firmly on the ground with two feet, while each of the letters of the word sheker stand on only one foot, ready to topple down. Being emes’dik is not only about being careful to only speak the truth, but also about being sincere. It says in Tehillim 15:1-2, “Hashem, mi yagur… v’doveir emes bil’vavo. — Hashem, who will sojourn in Your tent, who will dwell upon Your holy mount? He who walks uprightly, works righteousness, and speaks truth in his heart.” It does not say speaks truth with his mouth, but in his heart. It is not easy in today’s world to always speak truthfully. The many pressures we face on a daily basis are a constant barrage on our resolve to be emes’dik. We may see others stretching the truth, hiding the truth or ignoring the truth, and we might find ourselves weakening. We might find ourselves in situations that are not as “big” as real estate transactions and somehow conclude that being emes’dik is less important when the matter is “small.” However, if a person works hard on the middah of emes at all times and in all situations, it draws him closer to Hashem, as it says in Tehillim 145:18, “Karov Hashem l’chol korav… — Hashem is close to all who call Him, to all who call Him ve’emes.”
It is not easy in today’s world to always speak truthfully. The many pressures we face on a daily basis are a constant barrage on our resolve to be emes’dik.

Lower Manhattan Terror Attack Stuns New Yorkers AN UZBEKISTAN NATIVE went on a murderous rampage on West Street last week, using a pickup truck to kill eight people and wound over a dozen more. The Associated Press reported that 29-year-old Sayfullo Habibullaevic Saipov drove his rented Home Depot truck into the bicycle lanes that run between the West Side Highway and the Hudson River at Houston Street at approximately 3:00 p.m. on October 31. Saipov traveled 14 blocks on the novehicles-allowed bicycle path, hitting approximately two dozen pedestrians and bicyclists before crashing into a school mini-bus at Chambers Street that was carrying two children. Climbing out of his dented truck brandishing two guns that later were discovered to be fakes, Saipov was stopped by the quick actions of a police officer and was taken to the hospital for non-lifethreatening injuries. A statement made by Saipov as he jumped out of his truck led police to classify the attack as terrorism. “This was an act of terror, and a particularly cowardly act of terror aimed at innocent civilians, at people going

about their lives who had no idea what was about to hit them,” said New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio. President Donald Trump also denounced the attack, announcing, “Not in the USA!” A m o n g those who died in the attack were a 23-year-old software developer from New York, a 32-year-old project manager who worked at Moody’s Analytics, a Belgian woman and five friends from Argentina who came to New York City to celebrate the 30th anniversary of their high school graduation. Roads in the area were closed for hours, but one of the first on the scene was a Flink driver from Monsey who stopped his truck on the highway when he realized that something was terribly wrong, according to VIN News. The driver, who asked to be identified only as Yossi, said that he called 911 immediately, but they knew nothing of the situation that had unfolded along the water’s edge. Yossi said that he saw people doing CPR on some of the victims while they
waited for help to arrive and that the police showed up within minutes. “There were tons of cops rolling down the West Side Highway and emergency crews and everything,” reported Yossi. Not having any experience in first aid that would enable him to provide assistance, Yossi went back to his truck, which was still parked on the highway. Hoping to avoid the massive traffic that was piling up as he continued to make a delivery in Boro Park, Yossi made a U-turn onto the northbound lanes of West Street where he soon saw police cars heading directly towards him in their efforts to reach the scene as quickly as possible. Yossi reported being in shock after witnessing what he later learned was a terror attack but noted that it was immediately clear that something terrible had happened. “I have been driving the West Side Highway for the last three and a half years, and I have seen accidents, rolled over cars and fights,” said Yossi. “This is Manhattan and you see it all, but this time something told me that something big was happening.”

Roasted
Fall Vegetables
Roasting is one of the best methods of preparation for maximizing the deep flavor of fall vegetables. With just salt, pepper, a bit of oil and a hot oven, nearly every vegetable becomes sublime. Here are a few ideas to get you started.
THE MONSEY VIEW / 69
ROASTED FALL VEGETABLE SOUP INGREDIENTS: 1 small butternut squash, peeled, seeded and cut into cubes 1 pound small red potatoes, quartered 1 large red onion, peeled and quartered 4 medium carrots, cut in thirds 3 garlic cloves, peeled and crushed 1½ T. oil 1 tsp. kosher salt Dash pepper 5 cups water 1½ T. lemon juice Melba toast, for serving
DIRECTIONS: 1. Preheat oven to 450°. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Toss vegetables with oil and spices, and roast until vegetables are soft and starting to brown, about 45 minutes. 2. Pour off any accumulated juices and purée in blender with 5 cups water. 3. Pour through a sieve and into a pot. Heat soup and add lemon juice. Adjust seasoning to taste and serve with melba toast.

A property full of trees is what I see as every Monsey resident’s birthright. Yet, come fall, and this delightful canopy of summer shade sometimes turns into a never-ending task. Take some stress out of the annual outdoor mess with this timely guide on autumn lawn care.
FOR LEAF REMOVAL Mr. Rottenberg of Evergreen Landscaping, the expert on grass quality control, says that while there are no strict deadlines for getting fallen leaves off your lawn, leaving them for longer periods of times will have adverse effects on your landscaping. Raking the leaves while the trees are still shedding does not fall into the same category as shoveling the snow while it’s still snowing (or cleaning the home while children are growing). Leaf collection should be done weekly or biweekly to avoid accumulation and damage to the grass. “One must is to beat the snow,” he cautions. Once the ground is covered and the moisture is here to stay, leaf collection becomes all that more difficult, and the
grass becomes compromised. Until then, keep collecting them every so often. Wet leaves are really not good for grass, so try to collect them before a rain forecast, and definitely get everything off the ground as soon as the leaves are saturated — or even damp.
November 8, 2017 / THE MONSEY VIEW / 77 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484
AND LEAF REMOVAL According to the Town of Ramapo’s leaf and yard waste disposal codes, leaves and other yard waste must be bundled in biodegradable brown paper leaf bags and placed at the curb for pickup on your street’s regular garbage day. Rocks and dirt should not be placed in the bags. This is in effect around the year. The good news is that Town of Ramapo residents can pick up biodegradable leaf bags free of charge at the Public Works Building at 16 Pioneer Avenue in Tallman between Monday and Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Residents may get up to 25 bags per visit. For more information, their office can be reached at 845-357-0591. Since we were unable to reach the Town to confirm this, please call before going down.
FOR LEAF REMOVAL Move with the Wind
Rake Downhill
Use a Tarp
Step Down
Observe the direction of the wind, and rake your leaves with it instead of against it.
Cut back on the manual labor by raking the leaves onto a tarp, and then rolling up the tarp before shaking it out straight into the bag.
Protect Your Hands
If your property is on a slant, always rake downhill. It’ll make the job so much easier.
If you need to get away mid-job, step on the pile before you go, and less of it will get blown away before you finish.
Avoid blisters on your hands by wearing snug gloves that are not too tight.
78 / THE MONSEY VIEW
FOR LEAF REMOVAL When it comes to leaf removal, the options are many. A good old sturdy rake does the job and gives you a great workout in this season when neither extreme heat nor extreme cold makes the outdoors uninviting. But not all rakes are equal. You want to pick up one that will
not cause fall activity to turn into backbreaking labor. There are two important qualities to look for in a rake: 1. Durability. Look for a hardwood handle, which is attached with more than just glue, and metal tines, as their plastic counterparts will often break under pressure. 2. Comfort of use. Raking uses a lot of muscle, and you don’t want to strain them more than you must. Choose a lightweight rake. Measure its dimensions so it works with your posture and body size. If the children want to help you, get smaller rakes to ensure they’re not too cumbersome for little hands and shoulders. You can also look into purchasing a leaf blower, which makes the job a lot easier and faster. Another option you can invest in, which is really good for your grass, is a mulching mower that breaks the leaves up into small pieces that do not harm the grass. Fall is also a time to see to the gutter clutter fallen leaves may have created in your home’s first line of defense. One great item out there — it may be too late for the fall season, but the winter is almost upon us — is this Gutter Guard available at most hardware stores. Designed to allow the water to flow through while keeping the mess out, this is the newest solution to a worry-free gutter.

Strolling down Maple Avenue with its rich, breathtaking scenery of multi-hued trees brought back some happy memories from autumn days as a third-grader. We would take out pretty poetry notebooks, turn to the fall page, and then the whole class would erupt in heartfelt song: (Any student who has ever learned this song should feel free to join in with sweet nostalgia.) “Come little leaves,” said the wind one day, “Come over the meadows with me and play, “Put on your dresses of red and gold, “Summer is gone, and the days grow cold…” We may have learned the rest; I can’t quite remember. And if I’m singing it off-tune, please thirdgrade teacher, accept my apologies. But those reds and golds are definitely inspiring. And fun! Have you jumped into a leaf pile yet? Or competed with the neighbors to see who could find the prettiest one? They’re only here for a short season, so grab a jacket and head out for some fall fun. To make the most of it, see the list of activities provided for your autumn enjoyment. You’re welcome! Disclaimer: These activities are just suggestions. Proceed at your own risk. Author is not responsible for bits of crushed leaves in pants pockets, ponytails or the bathtub, nor for paint stains on hallway carpets, Yanky’s peyos or in the stew bubbling nearby.

Leaf Resist Art You may have tried wax resist or tape resist, but I bet you haven’t tried the method with leaves! Take the kids outside to collect the prettiest leaves in the yard. Then have them arrange a few specimens on a large piece of paper while you prepare some washable paint. Kids can paint colorful strokes over the paper, and once they have painted to their heart’s content, lift away the leaves to reveal a magnificent piece of art. (You may want to temporarily tack the leaves down with a piece of fun-tak.)
Watercolor Glue Resist Art
This one could really make a nice wall hanging. (You might just get lucky and sell it to one of those “modern art” museums.) Kids can collect an assortment of leaves and arrange them on a hard paper or even a canvas board. The leaves should be traced and then removed. Younger kids can use Elmer’s glue while older kids can use a glue gun to outline the tracings. Once glue is dry and hardened, use liquid watercolors to fill in each leaf outline. The colors will not seep through the glue, creating beautiful sharp edges between leaves. (Water mixed with a tiny drop of food coloring can be used in place of liquid watercolors.)
Leaf Stamps Which child doesn’t love stamping? And with a real, natural stamp, too? Collect various types of leaves and prepare some washable paint. Kids can dip the leaves into paint and “stamp” them on paper. Dip the leaf into multiple colors for a realistic fall-hued effect. You can show kids that by using just a thin coat of paint, the leaf’s veins will come through in the stamp.
Leaf Drawings
You know how kids are always seeing things? Give them full license for imagination! Glue a leaf down on paper and see what they can turn the leaf into. Provide pencils or markers for kids to doodle around the leaves, incorporating them into an amazing drawing.
Leaf Pictures Drawing is not your thing? You can still get your imaginative juices flowing by creating a picture using only leaves. A collage of sorts, these pretty designs can use leaves of all colors and sizes to make animals, flowers and just about anything else.
92 / THE MONSEY VIEW / November 8, 2017 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484
Leaf Hair
This one’s for the girls! Create your favorite hairstyles out of all those pretty leaves. Draw a face on a piece of paper, and use similarly shaped and colored leaves to dress it up with a fancy hairdo. Giggles guaranteed.
Search ‘n Find Create a treasure hunt where kids have to root around a box of leaves to find a list of goodies. Fill a large box or container with many colorful leaves, and hide little objects (e.g., small toys, candy) in the heap. Little ones will love to throw around the leaves until all items on the list are found and checked off.
Leaf Impressions Every child who went through some kind of education system has learned the fine art of leaf impressions by putting a leaf under paper and coloring over it for the design to emerge. But have they ever tried the mega version? Collect the prettiest leaves and line them up on the floor. Do it in the hallway or a really large room; the longer the better. Then unroll a package of shelf paper above the row of leaves, and use masking tape to tape it to the floor on all sides. Invite the neighbors and cousins to get onto the floor and bring all those leaves to life on the oversized banner!
Leaf Lacing
Leaf Bowls
Remember those lacing cards that we used to play with back in the 70s? (Nah, I’m not that old. I looked it up in the history books…) Create a homemade version! Many kids would be delighted to be experimenting with needle and thread. Sandwich a pretty leaf between two pieces of clear contact paper. (If you own a laminator, it can be made more durable with laminated plastic.) Then cut around the leaf, leaving a one-inch border, and punch holes all around the border. Thread a blunt needle with thin yarn and let kids lace away. As an additional benefit, it will strengthen their fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination.
Kids will feel mighty proud creating a special fall gift for Mommy… You’ll need a big balloon, ball or a large, overturned bowl as a molding object. Cover the bowl or half of the balloon/ball with saran wrap or plastic. Then let kids use glue or Mod-Podge to stick the nicest leaves in their collection directly onto the plastic. Once done, give the entire thing a good coat with glue or Mod-Podge, and let it dry overnight. When dry, take the plastic off the bowl/balloon/ball and carefully peel the plastic from the leaves to reveal the coolest leaf bowl.
Leaf Hunt Kids will enjoy hunting for leaves by color or shape with these fun cards. Each child can get one or more cards that will either have a leaf color or shape on it. They can then run around the yard to find perfectly colored or shaped leaves to match their card(s) and clip their findings on the card with clothespins. Who will have the thickest pile?
November 8, 2017 / THE MONSEY VIEW / 93 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484
Leaf Mazes Jumping in a pile may be a lot of fun, but have you tried running through a leaf maze? Older kids will love being the designers and arranging leaves into simple mazes, while the younger brood will be thrilled to run around the pathways. Win-win!
Leaf Parachute
Outdoor Nature Art
Exploring nature at this time of the year is fun, educational and oh, so healthy. Head outdoors to collect materials to create your art. Depending on your location, these might include pebbles, small rocks, leaves, acorns, sticks, dandelions, daisies and anything else you come across. Let kids putter around in a big, open area to design their findings into a masterpiece. Don’t forget the camera!
Leaf Amusement Park Got a slide? Get to work with that rake and build a mammoth pile at the foot of the slide. Kids will shout with glee as they come zooming right into a pile of CRUNCH!
94 / THE MONSEY VIEW / November 8, 2017 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484
This one’s for your toddler who loves throwing things. Head out with a large, round parachute for some serious leaf-flying fun. (If you’re like the other 98% of us who don’t have a parachute, you can use an old sheet.) Spread the parachute or sheet on the ground and have the kids pile some leaves on top. Then have each kid grab a corner — and one, two, three, lift! Lift it up and down, up and down, creating a leaf storm. Bath recommended.

ideal environment for seminary grads
When it comes to taking in the crunchcrunch of fallen leaves underfoot and the rustic foliage of autumn colors, even a short stroll down your block will do. But as the season of breathtaking beauty and vivid views winds down, many scout out spots from where sweeping panoramas of autumn richness, as well as the invigorating crisp fall air, are still available. Whether you prefer to hike, bike or simply ride, make sure to visit a breathtaking spot or two before the autumn hues fade.
This year, the fall colors in upstate New York are somewhat muted. To blame is most probably the long, dry September days and the heat that lingered into the fall. This delays fall coloring and dims the vibrancy, but the views are breathtaking nonetheless! Please note: Since it is getting dark earlier in the day and temperature drops lower in elevated terrains, don’t be caught unawares in the cold or wind. Pack along some warm sweaters, or even winter coats, when heading to the mountains.

Try Perkins Memorial Tower, which can be reached by foot or by car, for 360-degree views of vivid autumn scenes. Or hop over to the park for an autumn-saturated walk around Hessian Lake, a stroll at Fort Montgomery to see views of the Bear Mountain Bridge and the Hudson — where the reflections on the water are always special — or a hike up Bear Mountain.

I certainly didn’t intend to become a career coach, and it was never something I thought of when I chose a job. If I had even known what a career coach was over a decade ago, my work experience likely would have taken a very different path. The only form of career guidance I had was a test provided in seminary, where my two most likely job matches were a farmer and a nursing home administrator. Not exactly what I had in mind… My career started off on a pretty typical path. My first real job after seminary was as a third-grade teacher with a grand salary of $500 a month. I trained as a special educator at the same time, mostly because that’s what most of my friends were doing and it sounded like working in education would be a good schedule for a mother. I got married and moved to Brooklyn, where my husband joined a kollel and I had better job opportunities. I landed an excellent full-time special-ed position, and continued higher level specialized training, which led to a better job.

I was fortunate to have a friend who babysat and could accommodate my nine-to-five work schedule when I returned to work a few short weeks after the birth of my first child. I enjoyed helping the kids I worked with, seeing their amazing progress and knowing I had a part in helping them succeed in school. After a while, though, doing the same thing for eight hours a day, dealing with the same issues and writing the same reports began to feel boring and repetitive. At the same time, living in Brooklyn was something I could not get used to. As a Monsey girl, I
missed being able to pull up to Target or Walmart and find a parking spot, seeing more than four square feet of grass at a time, the sense of community, and of course, living near family. After my second child was born, I’d had enough of city life and spent my maternity leave applying to jobs back home in Monsey. But surprise, surprise… there was no demand for my wonderful services. It seemed that there were more special-ed teachers than students, less funding and fewer jobs. I widened my job search, since I was feeling bored and burned-out in the field anyway. When a friend of mine mentioned that her office was hiring, I figured it was worth a try to apply. It took some creative tweaking of my resume and highlighting of my transferable skills and personality, and along with some inside pull, I was invited for an interview. Excited at the chance to move and try out a new field, I spent time learning as much as I could about the company, what their vision was, what they looked for in employees and what they would want to hear from a potential candidate. I interviewed well — almost too well. I’m good at coming up with spontaneous and good answers, understanding what people want to
hear and presenting well, which is mean, cubicles. I would make a mad date for the position. So, there we were, a young couwhat an interview really tests. EMPOWER YOURSELF AT ACHIEZER’S JEWISH HEALTHCARE CONFERENCE& EXPO We are considering inviting my wheelchair-bound father to move in with us. How can we make our home more accessible for him? I would like to write a halachically and legally acceptable will. What do I need to know? Our special-needs son will be graduating school this year. Now what? Your questions have answers – and you’ll find themall at the Jewish HealthCare Conference & Expo on Sunday, December 3, 2017.This event is the ultimate resource for every caregiver, parent and mature adult, bringing together resources to inform and support you, whether you are caring for a parent, spouse, special-needs child or adult, or even yourself. Achiezer’s initial ElderCare Conference in 2011 brought together important resources for caregivers of the elderly. The program was enthusiastically received by professionals and caregivers alike. On the heels of that success, Achiezer expanded to host a similar SpecialCare Conference addressing the special-needs community. Over the years, these conferences hosted hundreds of vendors and thousands of attendees. Achiezer’s trademark modus operandi is opening its eyes and ears to what is lacking in the community and responding by filling the void in the best way possible. Over time, they gathered feedback from their ElderCare/SpecialCare events, as wells as fielded numerous calls to their offices seeking assistance in these areas and beyond. In addition to questions concerning the senior and special-needs populations, they encountered much confusion regarding preventative medicine and screenings and long-term planning for mature adults. With the upcoming HealthCare Conference & Expo, Achiezer is acting on that firsthand information. The beauty of this year’s brand-new comprehensive event, is that the types of vendors included speakers invited and topics featured are all targeted at addressing questions and concerns actually posed by the community. The Jewish HealthCare Conference & Expo truly promises to be a one-stop event for any and every need in the categories of Elder Care, Special-Needs Care and Preventative Medicine. The event is being held in conjunction with premium event sponsor Northwell Health, operators of 21 hospital facilities. Lecture and vendor categories will include the following topics: accessibility, advocacy, day habilitation, dementia, elder law, emotional support, estate/financial planning, guardianship, health screenings, housing alternatives, preventative medicine, rehabilitation, social services, special education, stroke care and prevention and more. Aside from the all-encompassing nature of the program, there is a lot more that sets it apart from any previous or similar functions. Every session, lecture and expo exhibit has been carefully selected to address the topics that are most important to our community. Furthermore, Achiezer has literally spent months contacting and gathering leading authorities in their fields – whether medical, halachic, social, legal or psychological– for an all-star line-up of featured lecturers. For example, venerated posekHaravDovid Cohen, shlita, will be addressing a session on special needs in halachah. This year’s event will be held in the beautiful, state-of-the-art Citi Field Stadium, which offers wonderful amenities and a very comfortable environment for all guests. In addition, the expansiveness of the Expo Floor allows for a greater variety of vendors and easier mobility. The Expo has already attracted a very wide and comprehensive group of facilities and companies from locations across the tristate area, including Brooklyn, Monsey, Lakewood and more. In response to overwhelming demand, the facility will be easy to access, with ample and free parking, as well as bussing offered from various neighborhoods. The entrance fee is only $25 for advance registration ($36 at the door). Please note that advance ticket purchase will allow for easier access to the Expo upon arrival. Don’t be left out! Join usfor the Jewish HealthCare Conference & Expoon Sunday, December 3, from 11 AM to 5 PM at Citi Field Stadium in Queens, NY. Look out for additional exciting details to be announced in the coming weeks. For further information about the Conference & Expo or to register please contact mkeilson@achiezer. org or (516) 791-4444 ext. 113. 118 / THE MONSEY VIEW / November 8, 2017 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484

THE WEB WE WEAVE “No, you started this! Now you can’t have it!” “But just because you wouldn’t let me…!” Loud, angry words are being hurled around in my neighbor’s kitchen. My hand, poised to knock, waits midair as I weigh my options.

How badly do I need to borrow those eggs, really? Maybe I’d rather serve Moishy something eggless I can scrounge up at home instead of interrupting World War III. I head home, lost in an interesting thought. If not for the identifying voices, I could not have known from the conversation alone what
the adult was saying and what was the child was saying. When one is engaged in a child’s lower brain, age makes no difference. It takes two to tango. And two to tangle. If one doesn’t provide the child with a dance partner, he is likely to hit the “stop” button sooner and try to figure out how to communicate better. A battle of wills has no winners, only the injured and the even-more injured. The lower brain is the place children call home. It is the animalistic part in us that cares only about survival and satisfying our needs, now! My job, as an adult with a developed mind, is to listen to what the child is saying and understand her feelings and needs without getting swept up in the emotion. My daughter throws a fit after
hearing she can’t have a lollipop and starts hitting me. All I say is, “Tzivi, you really want a lolly. Wow, you are so mad you can’t have another one.” I show true sympathy; I totally agree that it is very hard not to get what I want. However, “No hitting!” Firmly, I set boundaries and rules so that the little one can learn what is never an option, no matter the circumstance. These rules apply to me as
well. When angered or frustrated, I will not hit my child. I feel upset by a kid who just doesn’t listen? It’s okay to feel my feelings, but I can never raise a hand to hurt my child. Is this like waving a magic wand to have an angelic child and calm mommy always and forever? No, but I am teaching him right from wrong. These words combined with my role-modeling of proper behavior and following the same rulebook are stronger than any physical force. Beating kids up puts fear and anger into them, not respect, love or derech eretz. I am looking to build a Yiddishe kingdom for Hashem, with residents that love the Torah and its mitzvos, not a prison of fearful, obedient inmates. Sometimes I can forget and get lost in reasoning with and lecturing a child, thinking that she’s so mature and smart, surely this will get her to understand and improve her actions. “Ruchy, you know that crying about needing to take a shower won’t magically get you clean or change the fact that you still need to go shower. I don’t understand. You’re a big girl. You fully grasp the concept that we bathe before bed. Frankly, I shouldn’t even need to tell you this. You are too big for such behavior.” I need to face it: Shiurim should be given by rabbanim and rebbetzins in front of an enthusiastic audience. Lecturing my kids gets me nowhere. Instead, I can say, “I’m so sorry, shefeleh, you don’t seem to be in the mood to take a shower. Did you have a long, hard day? Please go take a shower now.” I take a deep breath and say it as I would any other firm, core belief, such as “There is no treif in this house.” No need to yell; deep

inner strength carries far more weight than a loud voice. The teacher calls to inform me that my Malky is a silent troublemaker in school. She gets girls to do her dirty work without actually playing in the mud herself. She’ll say, “I’m not inviting you to my Shabbos party if you don’t drop your pencil during class at my signal.” It has come to a point that girls are afraid of her and even more scared of displeasing her. They will go to any lengths to be on her good side although it may get them in trouble with the teacher. Unfortunately, I am not surprised as I’ve seen this behavior at home as well. I can tell the teacher I am dealing with it on my end, and she should do the same on her turf. I will tell Malky, “It sounds like you’re trying to be a team leader. You cannot threaten or shame anyone.” The teacher can try, “Malky, you enjoy having fun in school, huh? It is never okay to insult anyone or pressure your classmates.” Fighting with a child or having lengthy discussions about inappropriate behavior does not work. It just creates a Silly Putty effect of pulling and stretching and neverending arguments. Recognizing a child’s feelings while stating a rule firmly is a great tool. Then there is no room for opinions, and it is not an open debate. I show my children that Mommy has set her foot down and left beautiful footprints for her kinderlach to follow. ochel was always a happy child. Now, at 22, her natural spirit has been dampened by the trials of life. For over a year, she has been seeking a job in her profession. While we live in Toronto, Canada, Rochel wanted a job in NY, where she felt she would have also have a greater chance of finding a shidduch. But no job, no shidduch… no happiness. I watched Rochel become more sad and despairing each day. It broke my heart. I couldn’t watch her suffer anymore. I davened to Hashem for help, and he placed this random idea in my head. I flipped through the newspapers all the time, glanced at those Tehillim Kollel stories, but never put too much thought into what they had to offer. But now, it seemed like a message from Hashem: “Call! Their honest and dedicated Tefillos are what you need!” So I signed up my Rochel. And 10 days later, I repeat, 10 days later, she got a job! A great job, a job in NY, exactly what she was looking for. And over the next couple of days, I watched my Rochel bloom and transform back into the RochelIknew, happyandcontented. We daven that the next step should be a good shidduch and that we continue to watch our Rochel grow and thrive!

LEAF PEEPING Enjoying the beautiful colors of fall? You’re not the only one! Thousands of tourists book vacations to the New England states when the leaves begin their spectacular autumn show. Called “leaf peepers,” these tourists spend over $3 billion dollars annually on leaf-peep adventures! Vermont and Massachusetts are touted to have the most gorgeous of fall displays, but exquisite foliage can be found anywhere the seasons noticeably change from summer to fall. Maple trees are largely responsible for the stunningly vibrant red leaves leaf-peepers seek out. Oaks tend to be more subtle in color.
SOME LEAVES STICK AROUND Not all trees shed their leaves even in environments where the weather fluctuates greatly. Those that do shed are called deciduous trees. Those that don’t are coniferous. Deciduous leaves are often broad and flat, while conifers frequently produce needles. Conifers protect their needles with a waxy coating that makes their leaves durable and less enticing to insects than deciduous leaves. Some coniferous trees hold on to their needles for several years. Spruce needles live up to a decade, and the Bristlecone pines in California can hold on to their needles for up to 40 years!
BIG LEAF, LITTLE LEAF Smallest leaf: found on the duckweed plant. Less than 0.04 inch in diameter. Biggest leaf: found on certain species of palm trees. Can grow more than 230 feet in length!
128 / THE MONSEY VIEW
EDIBLE AND MEDICINAL LEAVES Though leaves are falling all around us, we may not realize that leaves are also a common part of man’s daily diet. Lettuce, spinach, kale and tea leaves are common to our locale, but hundreds of other edible leaves are used worldwide for various dishes and drinks. Many tree leaves are not edible, though some are. Spruce needles for instance, are safe to eat and packed with vitamin C. Leafy vegetables are also packed with great stuff, leading many of them to be used as medicine in addition to food. Over in Switzerland, some hospitals still use cabbage leaves to wrap around the joints of arthritis patients, as the leaves help relieve swelling and pain. The leaves and bark of the aspen tree can be used to make a natural form of aspirin. Some leaves can be addictive with their powerful properties, like the coca leaf. Back in the 1880s, Coca-Cola company used the coca leaf to produce their popular beverage, causing many people to literally crave their product. Eventually, use of the coca leaf became outlawed and Coca-Cola resorted to using a de-cocainized extract of coca leaf to achieve their flavoring.
LEAF ART Hailing from China is a relatively new form of art called leaf carving. Using a knife, the outer layer of leaf is slowly scraped away to form an image. The veins of the leaf are left intact to hold the project together. Such projects can take months of careful work. No need for canvas! Fallen leaves work just as well for painting! A 16-year-old girl is the artist behind these lovely designs.

Matok Li is a chocolate factory down south that is in competition with Sapir, the factory managed by Mutty’s father.
This is terrible! I must let Gavriel know. He’s our spy there, and he must knock them down.
You want to cancel your order? But why? Was there a big order from Sapir?
Who’s calling now? Oh, it’s Tom, the manager of our competition. I must hang up now.
What now? Another cancellation?
Yes. They say they got a better price from Sapir.
Tom, I ran into a bit of a problem, but I’m trying to fix it. I’ll call you later. Great! I have the suspicious paper, and I’ll go show it to Abba now.
He probably wants an update, but I lost the paper that could incriminate me. I’ll call him back later.
Oy, Abba is in the middle of a meeting. I can’t disturb him now.
Recap: Eli finds a paper on the porch with a diagram showing the route to the boiler room, and he realizes that the blackout must have been planned.

Real Estate New Changes in Credit Reporting RAIZY APPLIED FOR A MORTGAGE. Everything was going smoothly. She provided loads of paperwork, and because she changed jobs a week after applying for her loan, she dealt with the additional letters and documentation required. When the commitment was finally issued, one of the conditions requested was a payoff of a judgment for $11,000. Raizy had no idea that there was a judgment against her. When her attorney reached out to the lawyer handling the case, it turned out that she had cosigned on an apartment lease years before, and the party had moved out, leaving a balance. Karen and Ben received their mortgage commitment. On their commitment was a requirement to explain and pay off two judgments, one for $4,000 and one for $2,800. Karen knew exactly what they were, one was from a Discover card, and she knew about it, but had been sure it had been covered in her bankruptcy of four years before, and the other was from the Department of Social Services because she had once collected benefits when she had a job. Yael was purchasing a home and she asked her uncle to cosign, which he agreed to do, though a bit hesitantly. Prior to being issued a commitment, the lender’s QC department notified the processor that the cosigner had a $20,000 tax judgment. Upon speaking to Yael’s uncle, it was determined that there was an open judgment, but he didn’t have the money to pay it off so he arranged a payment plan. These stories have a few things in common:

These types of scenarios will be popping up more often in the coming months.
1. They are all true. (Names have been changed.) 2. They all happened within the last 60 days. 3. All the parties had no idea these judgments existed. 4. None of the judgments showed up on the public records section of their tri-merged mortgage credit report. What is the reason the judgments were not on the credit reports of the abovementioned borrowers? The reason for this is that a new change went into effect as of July 1, 2017, regarding credit reporting. As a response to a lawsuit, no longer will the three bureaus report any tax judgments or civil judgments that do not have a name, address, and either a social security number or date of birth. Additionally, the creditor has to update their public records once every 90 days. The benefit for the consumer is that their credit scores are higher, since these judgments are factored into the score, but when going through the loan process, this can throw a monkey wrench into getting approved and possibly even be a cause for denial. Let me tell you what happened with Raizy, Yael and Karen and Ben. Raizy’s attorney contacted the attorney for the judgment and requested a payoff. It took five weeks to get the payoff, and her
closing was postponed for over a month. She therefore was not in her new house before the yomim tovim. The seller was in contract on a house out of state and almost lost the house and their deposit while they waited. Raizy had to pay over $1,500 to extend her rate lock, but she did close on her home. Karen and Ben contacted Discover who acknowledged that they were discharged through bankruptcy so the debt didn’t have to be paid. Social Services responded within a day or two with a settlement that was accepted. Karen had to get a gift from her mom to pay it, but she closed on time. Yael, unfortunately, was not able to get a loan and received a denial. Her uncle did not have the money to pay the tax judgment, and the guidelines of the mortgage program that they were applying for allowed for a payment plan, but it had to have been in place for three months. Even if the seller would be willing to wait three months, the loan would not qualify with the additional debt. These types of scenarios will be popping up more often in the coming months. The question is: When does a bank find out about an unreported judgement? Each lender has different policies and protocols and as always, more changes will definitely be coming.
