CREAMY SPINACH AND M U S H R O O M QU I C H E :

I N GR ED I EN TS :

• • • •

1 pie crust 2 tbsp butter 1/3 cup thinly sliced shallots 1 pound assorted mushrooms, quartered or sliced

B A KE:

350°F - until the center is just set

(include at least 3 different types: shiitakes, Portobello, Crimini.)

• • • • • •

1 cup of spinach leaves 1 tbsp balsamic vinegar kosher salt freshly ground pepper 1/2 cup milk 1/2 cup Norman’s cream cheese • 3 large eggs • pinch nutmeg

Approx 30 to 35 minutes

Remove to a rack & let cool for 20 minutes before slicing.

METHOD :

• Pre-bake crust: Preheat oven to 350°F.

Bake initially for 15 minutes, then remove from oven and let cool a few minutes.

• Sauté shallots and mushrooms: Heat butter in a large

nonstick skillet over medium high heat. Sauté the shallots for a minute, then add the mushrooms. Add the balsamic vinegar. Sprinkle with salt and pepper and cook, stirring frequently, until the mushrooms release all of their moisture, and get well browned, about 10 minutes. Add spinach leaves and leave until they become wilted.

• Make the egg filling: Whisk together the cream cheese, milk, and eggs in a medium bowl. Stir in nutmeg, salt and pepper.

• Assemble the tart: Place the mushroom mixture in the crust. Pour the egg mixture over the mushrooms in the crust.

AGED CHEESE ALERT (Re: Garden Inspired, Issue 200) Your Shavuos kiddush spread was magnificent. I wanted to bring to your readers’ attention an important point. You featured a cheese charcuterie board with aged cheeses, olives and fruits. It’s really nice and looks so delicious, but it poses a major problem when a fleishig meal is served after the milchig meal, since one must wait six hours after eating most aged cheeses! Please make your readers aware of this so they shouldn’t be nichshal. E.I.

(Re: FYI: Orchids, Issue 200) First of all, thank you for a beautiful publication every week, which we really enjoy! It was really interesting to read Haddasah Steinman’s FYI article about the different types of orchids. I’m just wondering whether I can find these unique orchids in local flower nurseries. Also, I’d also like to know whether these species are either hybrids or crossbreeds, or whether they are natural. HADASSAH STEINMAN RESPONDS: I don’t believe these orchids can be found in local nurseries; seeds can be purchased online. The species described are naturally occurring plants, each one originating from different areas on the globe. And is that any surprise? Who but Hakadosh Baruch Hu can create plants that resemble other creations?

POISON IVY ALERT Now that the weather is warm, many people will be heading out to Manny Weldler Park (Viola Park). Sadly, every year I hear of children who come in contact with poison ivy there. Is there anyone out there who can arrange for the park to get rid of poison ivy to protect our children? A Worried Mother

Also, I noticed that the parent who sent in the original letter was writing in regard to comments on the report card, and not grades. I don’t believe the parent expected to have grades adjusted on her daughter’s report card; she was reaching out to teachers to request that they please remember to be kind when adding their one or two penned in lines at the end. Another Parent and Former Teacher

RE: REPORT CARDS ARE FOREVER (Inbox, Issues 199–200) I am following the back and forth about report cards with interest. I would like to respond to the letter by “A Monsey Teacher,” who wrote that report cards are a tool for monitoring a child’s scholastic and social accomplishments. The teacher made very valid points. However, issues should never be introduced on the report card. Any issue, be it scholastic, behavioral or otherwise, should be communicated way before report card time. If any issues are discovered, a plan should be worked out immediately so by the time report cards are issued, the parents are not only not surprised by any marks, but the issues are at least partly resolved.

Dear Parents and Teachers, I read your respective letters with great interest. Since the teacher and the mother have valid arguments, I’d like to share my opinion about this issue. I believe that there are two types of situations. In the first situation, the mother doesn’t accept her daughter’s hardships. She refuses to accept what her daughter’s teacher is attempting to tell her. In such a case, the teacher has no choice but to give the child failing marks, hoping that the mother will get the message so she can help her child improve. In the second situation, the mother is aware of her child’s struggles. She accepts her child’s

academic hardships and tries to help her child succeed. The child receives the help she needs and is performing to the best of her ability. In such a case, sending home a negative report card in unnecessary. Instead, the teacher should give the child a modified or oral test so the child has a chance to score better. Last, we must remember that teachers are human who try to do what is right. Parents should make an effort to work along with teachers, instead of attacking them. S.I.

I’m the original writer of last year’s controversial report card letter. I have to admit, the replies published then and now have been both entertaining and shocking. People have let their imaginations run wild, dreaming up scenarios in which parents are neglecting their kids and have no communication with the schools, or in which kids are horribly behaved and need to “buckle down” and learn life lessons the hard way, through painful comments and being pushed to their limits until they feel completely stressed out. (Yes, someone actually wrote that he believes children should be pushed to the

point where they feel they will crack.) The truth behind our story is that we were in constant contact with the school and spent hundreds of dollars a month paying for tutoring out-of-pocket, and there is no reason a child should be made to feel like a failure when they are trying. There’s time during the year for communication about areas in which a child can grow; pick up the phone, educators, and speak to parents! And that brings me to PTA. The couple of times a year I met with teachers, the whole show was a farce. Teachers put on a nice face and said how cute my child was, how well she was doing... and then sent home a negative report. Teachers, if you must share that a child is having difficulties, you can utilize the private opportunities of PTA to discuss them! Don’t just waste our time with niceties, please. And certainly, don’t let our children get a whiff of a negative view of herself in an inappropriate manner. A Mother

A ROBOCALL SOLUTION (Re: Make It Stop!, Issue 177) As every Monsey family has the headache of receiving many annoying robocalls daily, I’d like to share that I found a product on Amazon called CPR Call Blocker that successfully blocks robocalls. Please notify your readers about this, as I think it can be a big help. N.G.

GREAT COMMUNICATION GUIDE (Re: Easy Speak, Issue 77) I wanted to thank The Monsey View for the Easy Speak translation guide that you printed two and a half years ago. It is a lifesaver. It’s been hanging on my fridge since it first appeared in your paper and helps me communicate with my cleaning help since then. Mrs. Friedman We know how much it means for you to have cleaning help. We also know how frustrating it can be to try to communicate when there’s a language barrier. And while not all cleaning help speaks Spanish, many housekeepers do. Use this handy guide to better relations between you and the person who helps you keep your house presentable. We know you’ll appreciate it!

Parshas Bamidbar By: Malka Schneps

Parshas Bamidbar always falls out on the Shabbos before Shavuos. Each year on Shavuos, R’ Meir Premishlaner, zt”l, would tell the following story, to express that bein adam lachaveiro is a foundation for Kabbalas HaTorah. The king in Vienna was a good friend of R’ Shimshon Wertheimer, zt”l. One day, the king asked R’ Shimshon why it was that Klal Yisroel suffers more than other nations. R’ Shimshon answered that there is hatred and jealousy among Klal Yisroel, and that is why we suffer so much. The king did not believe R’ Shimshon and threatened to expel the Yidden unless R’ Shimshon gave him the “real” answer. R’ Shimshon, in an effort to find an alternative answer that would satisfy the king, made a hashbaas chalom to have a dream that would reveal to him the answer. In his dream, he was told not to retract his response to the king, for he had spoken the truth. Meanwhile, the king had gone hunting. The hunting party broke into groups, and the king became separated from his men and got lost. Each hunting group assumed that the king was with a different group. The hunting groups all returned to Vienna, but the king was left behind, lost and alone in the forest. The king came to a river and saw the lights of a village on the other side. He removed his royal coat and swam across the river to reach the village. The king knocked on the door of a Jewish man’s home, and he was welcomed in. The king did not reveal his identity, because he

112 / THE MONSEY VIEW

was afraid that he would not be believed. Meanwhile, the Jewish man allowed his guest to warm himself by the fire, and then he served him a hot meal and gave him a bed for the night. In the morning, the king asked where he could find a wagon driver to take him to Vienna, and the Jewish man informed him that he himself was a wagon driver and could take him there. The wagon driver stated his price, the king agreed, and they set off on their journey. Once they reached Vienna, the king instructed the driver to bring him to the palace, where he asked the driver to wait. After a time, the driver was summoned inside, whereupon the king revealed his identity. The king asked the driver to request a fitting reward for having saved the king’s life. The driver asked that the king issue orders that the driver’s competitor be prohibited from working in the villages and towns where he worked, because that other man was taking away his livelihood. The king was astounded — the wagon driver could have asked for immense wealth, but he was so blinded by jealousy that he could only think to knock down his competitor. That’s when the king proclaimed that R’ Shimshon had been right; Klal Yisroel indeed suffers because of hatred and jealousy. When we received the Torah at Har Sinai, we were k’ish echad b’lev echad — one people with one heart. Unity and love is what binds us together and makes us worthy of the Torah. As we prepare to receive the

Torah this Shavuos, it is crucial that we work to unify our hearts. Hatred and jealousy drive us apart and, as the above story reveals, only brings suffering upon us. We must fargin each other and be satisfied with what Hashem gave us. The challenge is great, but it is within our grasp. I personally know a man who owns a store that specializes in a certain product. Many years ago, he encountered a young man who was in desperate need of parnassah, so he offered the man a job in his store. The man worked hard until, having discovered how the store worked and who the suppliers were, he opened his own store in direct competition with the man who had once had pity upon him and had given him a job. Whenever someone would ask the original store owner whether he was upset about his new competition, he would look genuinely surprised. “Do you really think Hashem will take away from me what is mine because someone else opened a store? Hashem decides on Rosh Hashanah what my parnassah will be, and no person can take that way.” Incredibly, whenever his competitor would run out of a certain product, he would call his previous employer for help, and his previous employer would personally deliver the boxes to his competitor. We chose to accept the Torah at Har Sinai, but we reaffirm that choice by continuing to choose to live by the Torah. We can choose to be like the driver in the first story or the store owner in the second story. Which will you choose?

Compiled by: Sandy Eller

Study Reportedly Overestimates Kiryas Yoel School Expenditures A report that gave the Kiryas Joel School District the dubious honor of being the state’s top spender per child by a significant margin is based on flawed data, according to the district’s superintendent. A statewide analysis performed by The Post-Standard on 670 of New York State’s more than 900 school districts showed an average per student spending of $19,155. According to the report, Kiryas Yoel spends $152,539 per student, with Suffolk County’s Fire Island in the only other school district whose per-student expenditures topped $100,000. Large cities in the state including New York City, Syracuse, Buffalo, Rochester and Yonkers were not included in the study. In an interview with The Monsey View, Kiryas Yoel school superintendent Joel Petlin said that the analysis is flawed, computing per-student spending by including only public school students in its calculations, without considering the many services that are also offered to private school students in the district. “Our General Fund budget includes over $4 million in transportation expenses provided to nearly 7,000 nonpublic school students and millions more spent on therapeutic services that are provided to hundreds of nonpublic school students at multiple sites,” said Pet-

lin. “Including the budget revenue in the data and not counting the actual student count in the expense is an unfair methodology that is sadly repeated every year.” Petlin estimated that the actual amount spent on Kiryas Yoel’s public school special needs students is closer to $79,000, which is used to educate handicapped students in classes that are limited to just eight students and have both a teacher and a teacher’s aide, while also providing multiple types of therapy. That figure is similar to expenditures in other schools providing similar services, noted Petlin. “To compare that to a general education public school that has one teacher to 25 to 30 students in a classroom is extremely unfair,” said Petlin. The problem is similar to misaligned criteria used to compute state funding in the East Ramapo Central School District, where yeshivah students outnumber their public school counterparts by a ratio of three to one. While the district provides mandated services including busing and textbooks to all students in East Ramapo, the funding formula includes only public school students, leaving the district with ongoing financial issues because of the disproportionate number of nonpublic school students.

Chrysler Recalls 200,000 Pacifica Minivans A steering system wiring defect has had Fiat Chrysler issuing a recall for Pacifica minivans built between October 11, 2016, through November 20, 2018. CNET reported that a sealant used in the manufacturing process could create a problem that might cause drivers to lose power steering or motive force while operating their vehicles, potentially increasing the risk of a crash. The issue was discovered in January, prompting an investigation based on information from 14 vehicles whose power steering failed intermittently. Chrysler issued the recall in May and will be sending out recall notices to affected owners in late June. Pacifica owners who have already paid to fix this problem will be reimbursed for the repairs. Pacifica minivans built after November 20, 2018, are not included in the recall.

CHAPTER SEVEN Recap: Gustav approaches one of the Soviet Union representatives visiting the orphanage to ask if he’d seen his mother who had “traveled East.” The man realizes that Gustav is Jewish. A fearful Elisheva discusses with her husband what the odd phone call about them could mean. The next day the mysterious caller, Mr. Rosenblit, leaves a message for her at home. Elisheva calls him back. The phone rang. And rang. Finally, someone picked up. “Rosenblit and Etzioni, Attorneys at Law, good afternoon.” Lawyers? Elisheva kept a steady gaze on the cat that had sneaked up behind the large dumpster. For its part, the cat was maintaining eye contact with the strange woman who had invaded its territory. “Hello?” “Yes…” Elisheva tried to focus on the conversation. “I received a call from Mr. Rosenblit, and he asked me to call him back.” “Who is this, please?” The woman was probably a secretary. “Mrs. Potolsky.” “Potolsky? Oh, yes. Attorney Mayer Rosenblit would like to set up a meeting with yourself and your husband.” “A meeting with us?” “Are you Tziporah Genendel’s parents?” “That’s right.” She felt constricted. And it wasn’t because of the cat, which was approaching her step by step. Goodness, that cat was getting daring! “Mr. Rosenblit wants to meet you.” “What about?” She moved her hand. Perhaps the cat thought she was just another object that had been placed next to the garbage dumpster. “I do not know what it’s about; I’m just the secretary.”

“Where is your office located?” “In Tel Aviv. The address is 15 Yannai Street.” “Tel Aviv?” Elisheva took a step to the side, glancing cautiously at the cat that was getting busy with a torn mattress lying near the fence. They needed to clean up this backyard. It really was a disaster. “What time does the lawyer see people?” “You tell me what time is good for you, and I’ll check to see whether he is in the office at that time.” “Friday morning?” She didn’t work then, and Eliyahu was free. The question was only how she would manage to wait until Friday. “I’m afraid that won’t work. Mr. Rosenblit will be out of the country on Friday.” “So maybe another day, in the evening… but one second.” Elisheva suddenly realized that her approach to this conversation was silly. Even if this whole incident was making her feel pressured, that didn’t mean she had to stop everything and salute just because of a phone call from the secretary of a lawyer they had never heard of. “I’m sure you understand that we would not want to come to a meeting without having any knowledge about what exactly the whole thing is all about. Either find out and get back to me with some more information, or tell Mr. Rosenblit to be in touch with me directly.” “I’ll let him know,” the secretary said, just as Elisheva came around the front of the building. She glanced behind to make sure the cat

wasn’t following her, and when she turned back, she came face to face with her husband, who was just returning home. Eliyah listened to Elisheva’s report about the conversation she’d just had. Then he laughed. “Why are you laughing?” “Nothing, I just thought about how in books, phone calls from strange lawyers are usually about a hefty inheritance that the heroes of the story somehow came into.” “Oh, and you’re already spending this inheritance...” Elisheva smiled wryly. “It sure wouldn’t hurt us, but I’m sorry to tell you that this phone call had nothing to do with money. It was about Tzippy, or rather, her full name, Tziporah Genendel.” Eliyahu grew serious. “I’m not spending any inheritance; I just pointed out that it’s like that in books. In reality, of course, lawyers usually want to discuss much more banal things — ancient documents they’ve found, missing signatures... Tzippy didn’t have any problem with her army exemption, right?” “Of course not.” They were standing in the stairwell, whispering. “I’m afraid it has to do with the shidduch — you know, her and Peretz.” “Does something seem wrong, chalilah?” “I don’t know. What do we know about the Stockhammers, come to think of it? The mother is a Krohn. Who are the Krohns? We were hardly able to find out anything about them.” “Oh, you’re afraid there’s a problem that someone wants to warn us about? But when it comes to these things, Hashem yishmor, people usually ask a rav to update the other side. Not a lawyer.” Elisheva took a deep breath and revealed the worst of her fears: “Maybe they don’t want us.” “You’re taking this too far,” Eliyahu said. “Again you’re worried about the fact that your father grew up after the war as an orphan, with no knowledge about his family. You know how many people like that there were? And they went and established beautiful families, and everything was fine. Wait a minute; you spoke to Peretz’s mother two days ago, didn’t you?” “Right.” “So, what did you talk about?” “Nothing major — she called to say how much she enjoyed having Tzippy over Shabbos, and she thanked me for the tray I sent.” She allowed a small smile. “It was a very classic style, and Tzippy wrapped it beautifully. You wouldn’t believe that it’s another one of those wedding gifts we got all those years ago.” Eliyahu went back to the subject at hand. “Your conversation went well?” “Yes, baruch Hashem, it really did.” “Well, then it doesn’t seem likely that they sent a lawyer right afterward to tell us that they want to break the shidduch... And besides, in our circles, this is not a matter for lawyers. I really think, Elisheva,” he turned toward the stairs, “that you can stop worrying so much.” Could she? Maybe. They went upstairs, ate lunch and Eliyahu took a

short nap. Then he returned to kollel, while the afternoon routine began at home. Miri came to visit with baby Shmuly, and she showed her mother a few things that she’d bought for him that morning, “with the gift that you gave us for the bris, Mommy. The pacifier clip cost 40 shekel, and this outfit cost 120. This one was a 110, and the blanket was 60. If you go downstairs you can see the hook on the carriage that I also bought; that was 60.” “I’m happy that you are enjoying the money.” Elisheva focused on the baby’s face as he lay in her arms, oblivious to all the kissing and cooing in his direction. “But, um… didn’t you need the money for the bris? And I thought you got lots of clothes as gifts.” “He got only one blanket, a really thin, strange, itchy one, and the clothes were mostly Shabbos stretchies. We did get a few weekday ones too, but I really didn’t like most of them, and the few that I did like will only fit him in a few months.” “So you paid for the bris yourselves?” “Yaakov’s parents and grandmother gave us most of the money, and we paid for the rest with the checks we got as gifts.” “And what about a carriage?” I thought that if you didn’t need the four hundred shekel for the bris, you’d use it for a sensible carriage at least. The children gathered around them excitedly to see their little nephew, but right now Elisheva had eyes only for Miri’s face, which seemed to have clouded over somewhat. “For now I’m using my sister-in-law’s carriage. Yaakov’s parents want to give something toward a new one for us, but even with that we wouldn’t have enough money to buy a really good carriage. I don’t want a simple one. After I get the government child allowance, hopefully we’ll be able to afford it, b’ezras Hashem.” What’s considered a “really good carriage”? Elisheva thought, keeping her thoughts to herself. Miri was a young mother. This was her first child, and it was great that she had the energy to go out shopping. She was also allowed to want nice clothes and a good carriage and a pretty mobile and a cute pacifier clip for her baby. She was allowed to. Especially since her monthly salary was higher than her mother’s. The question was if she, Elisheva, shouldn’t be gently guiding Miri to lower her standards just a tiny drop... Didn’t a young couple just starting out need to be more financially aware? Were there no cheaper pacifier clips? Did the baby really need all those crystal beads? And the clothes… Could she not have found cute clothes for cheaper? Elisheva and her husband had definitely meant something entirely different when they’d made the effort to give the couple this money. Still, Elisheva pressed her lips together and didn’t say a word. She’d given a gift, and Miri had used it however she’d wanted. Perhaps someone needed to give Miri some hadracha here, but Elisheva desperately hoped that it would not have to be her.

A HOME FOR THE SEFER TORAH Crafted from wood, stone or metal, it is a symbol of splendor in every shul. More than a mere piece of furniture, the aron kodesh is an artifact of kedusha. As the home to our precious sifrei Torah, the aron kodesh itself is holy — and worthy of being made beautiful. Introducing some of the world’s leading artisans who design and fashion the heart of our shuls…

Meet: REB SIMCHA PALUCH It all began with a shtender. Though the rebbes of Gur never used a shtender during davening, when the Pnei Menachem, zy”a, became Rebbe, a table was placed in front of him so he could put down his siddur. Simcha Paluch noticed that the table was too low and decided that he would gift the Rebbe with a special shtender. He stealthily snuck in his handcrafted masterpiece just as the Rebbe entered the shul one afternoon, not giving the gabbaim a chance to stop him. The Rebbe put his siddur onto it — and the shtender remained in its place, where it continues to be used by the present Rebbe, shlit”a. When the Pnei Menachem later asked Paluch to name his price, Paluch requested a bracha instead. “You have professional talent,” the Rebbe said. “Focus on utilizing it, and you will succeed.” Thus began the career of Reb Simcha Paluch,

Gerrer chassid and artisan of note. Paluch focuses on designing and handcarving aronei kodesh. Under his skilled and meticulous guidance, his staff of frum craftsmen reached advanced levels of workmanship, producing some of the most beautiful aronei kodesh in the world. Unique in design, every piece Paluch creates is striking and impressive. Always striving for perfection, Paluch won’t stop until every detail meets his incredibly high standards. In Yerushalayim, the aron kodesh in the Dushinsky shul is worth a visit. Its pillars are carved from one solid piece of mahogany, etched with gorgeous grape clusters. The Premishlan shul in Kiryat Herzog, Bnei Brak, is also one of a kind. It includes twelve shtenders for tefillah next to the amud in its rounded design. One of his most magnificent masterpieces is found in the Rachmastrivka shul in Boro Park. It stands 28 feet tall and is engraved with motifs of mekomos hakdoshim. Satmar of Monsey and Pupa of Williamsburg also boast superior creations done by Paluch, as does Beis Medrash Govoha of Lakewood. An interesting project Paluch was asked to design was a portable aron kodesh for the Pentagon in Washington, D.C., which can be rolled in and out of the prayer room. His masterpieces are so countless that listing just a few Paluch products seems limiting. Suffice it to say that if you have visited shuls in Eretz Yisrael or abroad, you’ve likely viewed his artwork! “When I finish assembling aronei kodesh,” Paluch says, “I don’t separate from them… My feeling is that they are a part of me, because I invested such a great deal [in them].”

Meet: AVRAHAM FRIED Impressive. Imposing. Majestic. Enter the large Belz shul in Yerushalayim, and you will behold a most unique aron kodesh. At almost 40 feet tall, the aron kodesh is more than six times the height of your average man and about four stories high! Breathtaking and exquisite, this masterpiece draws attention to the grand shul’s holiest spot: the home of the sifrei Torah. The Belz aron kodesh is perhaps the crowning jewel of the collective artwork of Avraham Fried, a Romanian-born, world-renowned carpenter who designed some of the world’s most special aronei kodesh. A true artisan, the intricate and prestigious pieces he carved fall into an unparalleled league. Secured atop a metal base, this wooden masterpiece was handcrafted using 23 tons of Brazilian Walnut. Fried spent one and a half years

carving the intricate design in his studio in Kiryat Gat and sixteen days assembling the pieces on site. “I think the carvings, which are very bold, add much to its magnificence,” says Rabbi Y. Friedman, who conducts tours of the beis midrash. “And the three pillars on either side of the inner arch are also very imposing.” Nine steps lead up to the platform, with the last three turning to the side. In this way, as the person who removes a sefer Torah from the aron kodesh descends the stairs, he does not turn his back to the open aron kodesh, but goes down at an angle. Inside, there are four plaques engraved with “Lamnatzeiach,” two of which are visible and two hidden. The three secure safes in the aron kodesh can jointly hold up to seventy sifrei Torah! Every sefer Torah lies flat in the aron kodesh. Several curtains are used as the paroches. They stand out for their text-free design, having no pesukim or dedications embroidered on them. One blends into the design of the doors so well that it almost looks as though there is no paroches at all! Another paroches was hand-stitched over a period of 18 years by a couple from London, Reb Nota Henig and his wife. They worked on the paroches with extra care, only sewing during special times. Although Reb Nota was unwell, he merited seeing his paroches hanging in the shul and passed away two weeks later. His paroches is hung every Shavuos and Chanukah. Of course, for the Yamim Noraim, a white paroches is used. The gates around the aron kodesh serve as a mechitzah, keeping children from running up and down its steps, while accentuating the greater kedusha that lies within.

Meet: AVRAHAM ABERZEL Enter the old shul of Mezhbuzh and you will find timeworn benches and shtenders set on the dirt floor. The crowning masterpiece — the aron kodesh — along with the rest of the furnishings, seem to be artifacts of history with special charm. The surroundings make any visitor feel as if he is stepping back in time, walking around the shul where the Baal Shem Tov davened and sitting on the seats of the Yidden of his era. Look again! Believe it or not, this “antique” beis knesses has not been around for as long as it seems! The original shul that had stood until it was destroyed during World War II was recently restored on the same spot, following the same style. Architect and artisan Avraham Aberzel was

commissioned for the project, and he expended great efforts in recreating the shul to look and feel just like the original one did. Together with Rabbi Yisroel Meir Gabai of the Ohalei Tzaddikim organization, the brain behind the idea, they brought in Holocaust survivors who originated from the city and could recall the details. Aberzel studied some photographs of the interior and created the exact number of benches, arranged in the same position and location as the original. He hired local craftsmen who followed old-fashioned techniques and used local forest wood for a most genuine model. An expert at restoration of klei kodesh, this is but one of the renewal projects that Aberzel was involved with. A job similar to the Mezhbuzh renovation was initiated at the shul of the Ohev Yisrael of Apta. Aberzel also worked on aronei kodesh for the Me’aras Hamachpeilah, Meron, and the Churvas Reb Yehuda Hachassid shul in the Old City of Yerushalayim. The work in Meron was no simple feat. Aberzel was approached by a donor from Teverya who had received approval to provide a beautiful aron kodesh for the ma’areh in Meron. Still, various factions had difficulty cooperating with the plan. It was decided that the aron kodesh would be assembled on site in the dark of night. One Wednesday night, Aberzel arrived with all the parts to begin the installation. While working, he was surprised to discover a niche in the wall, indicating that there must have stood an

aron kodesh in the same spot at some point. This made the work much easier. Soon the information leaked, and one of the opponents of the project arrived on scene. It took a solid three hours of convincing until the man finally allowed the labor to continue. What followed was 36 hours of uninterrupted toil — and the aron kodesh was complete, in time for Shabbos. Another memorable project was designed for Rav David Abuchatzeira, shlit”a, in Nehariya. The Sephardi Kabbalist requested that Aberzel construct three aronei kodesh for him, and paid upfront. Aberzel was reluctant to take the money before beginning to work, yet Rav David said, “Your face testifies that you are the right one for the job,” and he sent Aberzel off with a blessing for success. The first aron kodesh was ready, and it was installed in Rabbi Abuchatzeira’s shul. Observing its beauty, Rav David asked Aberzel, “How did you so skillfully replicate the images of my grandfathers?” Aberzel had no clue what Rav David was referring to. That’s when Aberzel discovered a most amazing thing. Etched on one marble pillar of the aron kodesh was the face of Rav Yakov Abuchatzeira, zt”l, and on the pillar to its left was an image of Rav Yisrael Abuchatzeira, zt”l, the Baba Sali. While working on the project, Aberzel had not perceived these images that became part of the “wonder pillars.”

Meet: CHANA GAMLIEL “I firmly believe that a paroches is so much more than embroidery threads and velvet…,” says Chana Gamliel, paroches artist. “It is essentially the shul’s focal point.” Based in Bnei Brak, Gamliel’s paroches company designs high-end embroidered Judaica items. A true artist, Gamliel is excited by every new challenge, every unique paroches project. Her exclusive pieces are embroidered with love, and her goal is creating pieces that will inspire and add joy to the shul setting. Gamliel works with customers to craft customized designs that will meet their dreams and expectations, down to the very last detail. There are some pesukim that are commonly found on paroches. Then there are those who seek to emphasize a particular message or theme through their paroches design. Some popular motifs include a menorah, Beis Hamikdash, eitz chaim

and doves. One recent project, an impressive paroches for the new Biala shul of Stamford Hill, London, stands out. The shul designer, L. Schlesinger, wanted a flowery web that would span the entire height and width of the velvet. After nearly a month of sketching ideas for the design, coordinated with the ultra-posh elements that would embellish it, a change came up. The Rebbe wanted to add a very long dedication text listing the names of the nine BialaPshischa Rebbes who preceded him. What a challenge it was to intertwine the names of the Rebbes within the maze of flowers and leaves! But Gamliel is not one to be fazed. With positivity and exuberance, she designed the image and added color, embellishments and Swarovski crystals. The end result was breathtaking! However, with 3.8 million embroidery stitches and 1,500 hand-applied Swarovski crystals, there was no way this detailed work of art could be completed in time for the massive chanukas habayis of the shul. Then Gamliel had a brainstorm. She silk-screened an image of the paroches onto satin, and this version was ready to be hung in time for the occasion, months before the actual embroidered paroches was finished. Another British project was designed for the Rizhin-Boyan shul of Stamford Hill. Its crowning distinction is a glamorous Swarovski-laden crown with a dazzling effect. “I really can’t take all the credit,” Gamliel says. “I truly feel Hashem’s massive help in everything I do.”

Meet: MICHA OBERMAN In the rural countryside on the outskirts of Teverya rests the peaceful settlement of Lavi. Among the grass and the quiet, some little cottages and a family-style hotel, is an unassuming building accessed by a dirt parking lot. Ironically, this modest building houses one of the largest modern industrial factories of klei kodesh in the world! The furnishings of nearly 6,000 shuls across the globe were designed and created within its walls. Seats and shtenders, bimahs and mechitzos, and more recently, aronei kodesh, are all built from scratch by a talented team of craftsmen. Lavi Furniture Industries, a premier source for a shul’s interior design worldwide, had humble beginnings. It almost began by mistake! Flipping the calendar pages back to 1954… The neighboring community of Sdei Ilan asked the members of Lavi’s little carpentry workshop to help them build a shul, which soon became Lavi’s first project of this kind. Building on this success, the carpenters went on to build a shul for their own community — large enough for 600 mispallelim. The large chanukas habayis attracted a crowd, and people were impressed with what

they saw. It didn’t take long for orders to start coming… For the next 50 years, Lavi specialized in building shul seats and shtenders, later expanding to create other klei kodesh, such as aronei kodesh and bimahs. “About 1 million Yidden sit on our seats,” Lavi Furniture Industries’ CEO, Micha Oberman, estimates. That is possible thanks to their vast array of clients worldwide. Their first export took place in 1970, when shul furniture was shipped to Sydney, Australia. Since then, Lavi furniture have reached shuls in practically every corner of the world! The furniture is placed in a container, often in many pieces, and shipped by boat. The company then flies a team over for installation. When shuls wish to add, fix or replace parts, they also contact the company. “Every year, after Rosh Hashanah,” Oberman says, “we are contacted by Belz of Yerushalayim — probably our biggest project so far — to fix the seats that break from the heavy use…” At Lavi, the staff never forgets that they are working with objects of kedusha. With a goal to “create an environment of tefillah that is comfortable, pleasant and unique,” they employ a Yiddishe staff and operate fully according to halacha. A team of about 100 experts are involved in the work. Each one specializes in a particular part of the process — there are architects, designers, artists and craftsmen. Production managers oversee all activity, and quality-control inspectors ensure that everything that leaves Lavi Furniture Industries will live up to its top-quality name. In 2012, Lavi acquired the artist studio of Avraham Fried. With the merger, Fried continued using his talent and expertise on Lavi’s site, until he retired last year.

The average aron kodesh takes about 90 days from conception to completion. More detailed artwork could prolong the process, and obviously, shipping abroad takes more time. Much care is given to ensure the safety of an aron kodesh. Safety features are added to protect it from fire and burglary attempts, and the doors are built especially strong. They are designed to look nice while acting as a safe. In Toronto, Lavi was recruited to reconstruct a pre-War shul in Jaslo, Poland, 77 years after it was destroyed during Kristallnacht. The new shul is an exact replica of the original shul in Poland. The aron kodesh is magnificent, with huge carvings, and stands more than 36 feet tall! Lavi has built shuls for every kind of community in Klal Yisroel — from chassidish to Litvish, Sephardi to Young Israel — retaining the flavor of each kehillah by filling their customized requests. “Chassidish shuls tend to go with a more traditional design,” Oberman says. “We’ve done some very modern and unique styles for other types of communities.” Recently, Lavi produced an aron kodesh with a twist: accessibility for the disabled! Inside there is a trolley that can roll out with the sefer Torah, so that the wheelchair-bound can also have a chance to take out a sefer Torah. The shtenders in that shul can also be moved up and down with a foot pedal that is permissible to use on Shabbos. While the beautifully adorned aron kodesh symbolizes our yearning for the Shechinah in our mikdash me’at, it is our deepest dream to glimpse the holy aron itself in the Beis Hamikdash, bimheirah b’yameinu.

BEHIND THE CURTAINS AT LAVI: THE PROCESS Standing in front of a magnificent aron kodesh, in a shul with elegantly matched décor, you might never have thought into how the complicated design of the wooden aron kodesh came to be. It is professional, sturdy, polished — just perfect. Believe it or not, the gorgeously veneered piece evolved from simple pieces of raw wood! The first step is the design. Styles range from traditional to modern, and a community can customize exactly how they would like their aron kodesh to appear. Standard designs may be more budget-effective, but being that an aron kodesh must fit the space waiting for it in shul, it is most commonly tailor-made

according to the height and width specifications. Planning every aspect before beginning to work lends a coordinated feel once complete. The manufacturer will create a mockup, a photographic rendering of the finished product, in full color and detail. These shop drawings show exactly what the aron kodesh will look like — outside and inside. Next, a detailed CAD, or computer-aided design, is created, displaying the components of the project. The manufacturer uses these illustrations as an individual “manual” throughout the construction process. Finally, the aron kodesh is ready for production.

Using quality materials is vital for a high-end product. A common choice is European beech wood, for it has a most natural look and can take on many colors. Cherry wood and walnut are among the more luxurious variety. Pieces of natural raw wood are dried and glued together to form sturdy wooden panels according to the shape and sizes desired. After sanding and drilling, the panels are cut following the pattern decided by the customer. Finer details and decorations are hand-carved by expert craftsmen, and metallic embellishments and brass work are designed by ironsmiths. These designs are drawn by hand before being copied with precision. Painting involves a number of layers of paint and varnish. For environmental protection, only water-based lacquer, a more transparent yet nontoxic variation, is used. If you were to walk into the factory while a project is in progress, you would see various pieces and parts at all points of production. It takes a good imagination to picture them all coming together! However, once assembled and decked out with its metal and upholstery elements, the refined wood takes on a new form, and suddenly, you’ll recognize that aron kodesh or bimah!

How can I track my feelings? There’s a group for that. When emotions tend to shut you down, writing them down in private can help. The guidance of a skilled psychotherapist can help even more. One thing, though – this private approach frees you to express your thoughts, without second-guessing or guilt. Our groups focus on learning the keys to doing this productively. They don’t get the key to your diary.

The Yiddishe mama in me exults at the prospect of being wholly handson with yom tov prep. Shavuos, in particular, dazzles the mind with visions of floral glory and the promise of summer. Planning a tablescape for this beautiful yom tov is bliss. A gorgeous place setting begins with a statement placemat. Following are some DIY ideas that can be based on items you may already have on hand. Do try this at home!

It’s hard to deny the instant elegance a monogram provides. Simply print your family’s initials on any paper placemat to yield stunning results.

Leather. Practical, suave, smooth. Make your own by buying leather material at the fabric store. Or just buy it ready wherever home decor is sold.

174 / THE MONSEY VIEW / June 5, 2019 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484

Going paper is easy and versatile. Any scrapbook paper can do! Here I’ve chosen a bright print that’s stylish and puts you right in that floral yom tov mood.

This look is all about that satisfying feeling when you snag a perfect metziah at a discount store to grace your yom tov table. Pair a bright placemat with stark white plates to ensure a clean and modern tablescape. To top it off, cut an additional placemat into quarters and gather each one into a bow.

Boldly striped gift wrap is all it takes for this fashionable look to come to life. Simply cut your gift wrap into the desired shape and size and flatten with a heavy object until it lies flush against the table.

This placemat is a party in a box — literally! I cut out a square piece of cardboard from an actual box and lined it with some eyelet trim for a placemat that’s irresistibly quaint as it is elegant.

Wishing you and all of Klal Yisroel a beautiful, meaningful yom tov.

The motorcade stops in front of my house. I check the travel bags one last time, straighten the baby’s finery and pack the last-minute items. Finally we head out. My children stand wide-eyed on the driveway, up-dos in place, dressed in their finest. “It’s here! The limousine is here,” my daughter shouts. My husband reaches the car, carefully carrying the silver fruit bowl. The pomegranate glints in the sunlight and a fleshy peach lightly caresses a lemon. My fruits! All of our tefillos for a good crop, all of our hard work, and now we have it. Our firstborn fruits ready for the trip. I breathe. We made it! I stare at

180 / THE MONSEY VIEW / June 5, 2019 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484

each fruit and feel my heart let loose. Suddenly the doors of the limo open, and a group of lively bachurim bounce out and start a spontaneous lively dance. They come toward us, singing and swaying with passion. Ashreinu mah tov chelkeinu… Their voices are filled with reverence. Some of them open guitar cases, violin cases and trumpets, until we have an entire orchestra playing. We planted. Cried. Worked. Davened. Now is the time to dance. A time for the young ones to get a taste of happily sacrificing for Hashem. JUST trying to imagine a bikkurim scene of entire families making the yearly pilgrimage to Yerushalayim

is enough to have one pining for the Geulah. Picture throngs of Yidden celebrating, sacrificing their first prized fruit for Hakadosh Baruch Hu. In galus, we have our own bikkurim — sacrifices done with pomp and ceremony, sacrifices that imbue Yiddishkeit with happiness and inner satisfaction. Often, mesiras nefesh connotes death, horrors, beatings and starvation. But bikkurim teaches us that sacrifice can also be beautiful; mesiras nefesh for Yiddishkeit can be the highlight of the year. These three families are proud carriers of bikkurim. They sacrificed something dear to them with happiness and pride.

Family Sobel’s Story

Mrs. Brody’s Story

Apartment hunting is an exhausting job. For over a year, we searched the classifieds and took daily trips to see apartments. One was too expensive, one was too small, and interestingly enough, one was too big and would be impossible to keep clean. One was moldy, and one didn’t have hallways, and one was too out of the area for our children’s buses. And then we found it… the perfect place to live. A sprawling lawn, stunning decor, good price, and most of all, the playroom of our dreams. After several phone calls, we realized that one neighbor might pose a problem. The unfiltered technology in the home and the liberal attitude toward many things were uncomfortable to hear about because we really, really needed to move. “We’re private people. Who cares what the neighbor does?” we reasoned. We asked our rosh yeshivah, and he couldn’t give us a clear answer. My husband asked a friend, who said, “You’ll never find a perfect place to live. Every neighborhood has some like this and some like that.” “Just move already,” my parents said. “But we invest so much into our kids, and it does say that a shachan tov is vital.” We had to give an answer. The next day, we said no. And a day afterward, as a celebration, we made a family trip to the furniture store and installed a beautiful custom wall unit into our existing apartment to make it work for a while longer. They come toward us singing and swaying with passion! Ashreinu mah tov chelkeinu… Their voices are filled with reverence. Some of them open guitar cases, violin cases and trumpets until we have an entire orchestra playing.

As a busy mother of three little children, a bad cut from a Pyrex dish was a nuisance. And the cut was deep. I tried applying some gauze, but the bleeding wouldn’t stop. My husband took one look at it, and off we went to have it stitched. A few days later, the cut looked worse than before, and it wasn’t a nuisance any longer; it was an all-encompassing pain. It was Friday afternoon, and the doctor took a good look and sent us straight to the hospital. It was Erev Shabbos, and I had three little kids. We decided that I was a big girl (“But big girls don’t get cuts,” I whined) and I could stay in the hospital while my husband would stay with the kids at my parents’ home. Lonely and in pain, I watched the sun set from my hospital room. The doctor finally showed up a few minutes before the zman and ordered immediate surgery to drain the infection. I panicked and tried to reach my husband, but he had apparently left for shul already. I called a rav who I knew kept a later zman, and he told me to go ahead with the procedure. I had the surgery on Friday night, all alone. When I woke up, I was in severe pain. In order to drain the infection, the doctor had set up a special saltwater pump to flush the wound and then hooked up an anesthetic pump that I was supposed to administer myself in order to regulate the pain medication for my hand. Even in that state, I didn’t know whether or not pushing the button on the pump was permissible on Shabbos. So I refrained from doing it. Putting salt on wounds didn’t make it onto the cliché list in vain. The salt water on the wound was so painful, I shouted myself hoarse. But in the midst of all this pain, I celebrated. I celebrated the joy of sacrificing for Shabbos. As the tears ran down my face, I held Shabbos close. Maybe with three little children to entertain on long Shabbos afternoons I hadn’t valued the day enough. Maybe I’d needed this shakeup, and amid my tears I truly felt like celebrating this special day. They come toward us singing and swaying with passion! Ashreinu mah tov chelkeinu… Their voices are filled with reverence. Some of them open guitar cases, violin cases and trumpets until we have an entire orchestra playing.

Family Goldberg’s Story Shanah rishonah was a beautiful year, as well as a surprising one. Life really cost money. Lots of it. We were idealistic, but now we had to be realistic. Salvation came in the form of a summer job offer for my husband. My husband, being the great man that he was, was offered a head counselor job in the mountains. They were willing to pay him $20,000! “We’re rich,” he whooped with joy. All night long, we wove our dreams. Invested it, saved it, spent it. After all, $20,000 was more money than we’d ever seen before. Before confirming the job, my husband went to ask his rebbe for a bracha. “Not an environment for a man like you,” the rebbe said. And just like that, our dreams fell apart. I was totally heartbroken. “Daas Torah is something you listen to with mesiras nefesh,” my husband said every time I wistfully thought about the money. They come toward us singing and swaying with passion! Ashreinu Mah Tov Chelkeinu… their voices are filled with reverence. Some of them open guitar cases, violin cases and trumpets until we have an entire orchestra playing. Five years later, we were considering to buy a home. Our rebbe once again told us not to accept the deal. All professionals pushed us to buy it, but once again, we knew that heeding daas Torah was non-negotiable. Then, within the year, the house we had our eyes on dropped with $25,000. Now our rebbe gave his blessings, and we closed. Suddenly, it clicked. Five years earlier we had lost $20,000, but now we’d gained $25,000. We were repaid — with interest.

How can the age of a sefer Torah be determined?

CARBON DATING

TEXT/LAYOUT

(also referred to as radiocarbon dating or carbon-14 dating) is a method for determining the age of artifacts made of organic material.

At the end of the 12th Century, the Rambam established guidelines for writing sifrei Torah. Torah scrolls written in a different style, in regard to compression, justification, lines per column, decorative crowns and/ or other graphical elements, were written before that time. From the typography the locale of the sofer can also be determined.

What is said to be the world’s oldest known sefer Torah is estimated to be about 800 years old or even older. This Torah scroll was discovered just a few years ago, tucked away in the archives of the University of Bologna in Italy. Years ago, it had been catalogued as less ancient with a description about its unusual typography. But in 2012 a professor came across it and realized that the irregular text was from the pre-Rambam era. After being analyzed by experts and carbon-14 dated, it was determined that the Torah scroll had been written between 1155 and 1225 in Italy.

186 / THE MONSEY VIEW / June 5, 2019 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484

Another sefer Torah that is approximately 800 years old lies in Buenos Aires, and was acquired by the Rhodes Jewish Historical Foundation in Los Angeles for short-term exhibition and analysis by sofrim and rabbanim. Based on several factors, it was concluded that the sefer Torah originates from Spain from the pre-Inquisition era, and that it was written during the Rambam’s times. It is speculated that it was likely brought to Rhodes, an island in Greece, by the Yiddishe refugees fleeing the Iberian Peninsula during the Inquisition.

The oldest sefer Torah still halachically acceptable for use is owned by the community of Vercelli in Italy. It was sent for testing and was estimated to date back to the year 1250. The origins of this sefer Torah is a mystery, though it is speculated to hail from medieval Italy. After being restored by a Rome-based sofer, Rabbi Amedeo Spagnoletto, it is kosher and being actively used by a shul in Biella, a town near Vercelli. Given its delicate state, it is used only for special occasions.

At just two inches high and weighing less than half a pound, the world’s smallest kosher sefer Torah is a work of art. A businessman from Upstate New York commissioned this tiny sefer Torah so he’d be equipped for his many travels abroad; being that he tried to always daven with minyan, he wanted to have a sefer Torah available. This Torah scroll is made of vellum, a very thin parchment. The height of the letters are 1/32 inches and the text is made easily legible by the magnifying glass built into the sefer Torah’s sterling silver case. This unusual scroll was auctioned off by Kestenbaum and Company in 2014, with an estimated value of between $100,000 and $150,000.

Only three months ago, three rare sifrei Torah, estimated to be as ancient as 1,000 years old, were stolen from a shul in Tehran, Iran. The Iranian police are on the lookout for anyone who may try to smuggle the sifrei Torah out of the country.
