FINALLY, A SERIAL!

CHAPTER SEVEN

‫סקווירא‬

Recap: Gustav approaches one of the Soviet Union representatives visiting the orphanage to ask if he’d seen his mother who had “traveled East.” The man realizes that Gustav is Jewish. A fearful Elisheva discusses with her husband what the odd phone call about them could mean. The next day the mysterious caller, Mr. Rosenblit, leaves a message for her at home. Elisheva calls him back. The phone rang. And rang. Finally, someone picked up. “Rosenblit and Etzioni, Attorneys at Law, good afternoon.” Lawyers? Elisheva kept a steady gaze on the cat that had sneaked up behind the large dumpster. For its part, the cat was maintaining eye contact with the strange woman who had invaded its territory. “Hello?” “Yes…” Elisheva tried to focus on the conversation. “I received a call from Mr. Rosenblit, and he asked me to call him back.” “Who is this, please?” The woman was probably a secretary. “Mrs. Potolsky.” “Potolsky? Oh, yes. Attorney Mayer Rosenblit would like to set up a meeting with yourself and your husband.” “A meeting with us?” “Are you Tziporah Genendel’s parents?” “That’s right.” She felt constricted. And it wasn’t because of the cat, which was approaching her step by step. Goodness, that cat was getting daring! “Mr. Rosenblit wants to meet you.” “What about?” She moved her hand. Perhaps the cat thought she was just another object that had been placed next to the garbage dumpster. “I do not know what it’s about; I’m just the secretary.”

“Where is your office located?” “In Tel Aviv. The address is 15 Yannai Street.” “Tel Aviv?” Elisheva took a step to the side, glancing cautiously at the cat that was getting busy with a torn mattress lying near the fence. They needed to clean up this backyard. It really was a disaster. “What time does the lawyer see people?” “You tell me what time is good for you, and I’ll check to see whether he is in the office at that time.” “Friday morning?” She didn’t work then, and Eliyahu was free. The question was only how she would manage to wait until Friday. “I’m afraid that won’t work. Mr. Rosenblit will be out of the country on Friday.” “So maybe another day, in the evening… but one second.” Elisheva suddenly realized that her approach to this conversation was silly. Even if this whole incident was making her feel pressured, that didn’t mean she had to stop everything and salute just because of a phone call from the secretary of a lawyer they had never heard of. “I’m sure you understand that we would not want to come to a meeting without having any knowledge about what exactly the whole thing is all about. Either find out and get back to me with some more information, or tell Mr. Rosenblit to be in touch with me directly.” “I’ll let him know,” the secretary said, just as Elisheva came around the front of the building. She glanced behind to make sure the cat

RE: WHILE RIDING TO PLAYGROUP

We’re not your mother

(Inbox, Issue 200) Dear Letter-Writer, You described in graphic detail a scenario that you witnessed, as if what you saw is the accepted norm. Actually, it is very far from reality. When I started sending my son to playgroup several months ago, I had to find my own transportation because both their vans were fully occupied. When one child left the playgroup to start cheder, my son got the available slot. I see that every child is strapped into their own booster seat, and the mother is responsible to come out to the car to unstrap and take her child. I also have an adult son who drives for a different playgroup. His maximum is six children per route, and they each have a booster seat. Only if one child is absent will he take along his own daughter for the trip. Please do not misrepresent the true situation with one grossly irresponsible case. It is an injustice to all responsible playgroup drivers, parents and playgroups, as well as a big chillul Hashem. And to The Monsey View: Thank you for a very informative read. I enjoy the FYI immensely. R.F.

KIDS IN YOUR CARE

But isn’t it time you changed your socks.

It’s time to buy something new

56 / THE MONSEY VIEW / June 12, 2019 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484

Dear Potential Playgroup Teachers, Being a playgroup teacher is not easy. Please only undertake this job if you truly love kids and you wish to make them happy and comfortable every second of the day that they are under your care. Offer the children drinks when it’s hot — even if they don’t ask for it and it’s not “drinking time.” Please keep checking whether they need a diaper change — even if it is not “changing time.” Keep checking whether they need an extra hug or smile from you, and make sure each and every one feels that you love them most. Please don’t think that this job is so “easy” because you can do “nothing.” Your job is not to sit in the corner and let the children do whatever they want while you relax or busy yourself with personal things. Remember, their mothers would gladly have them home, but they have to work and need a safe, loving place for them to stay. If you do choose to become a playgroup teacher, remember to keep the “care” in “childcare.” A Reader

Parshas Naso By: Malka Schneps

Parshas Naso details the mitzvos relating to the nazir, a person who takes a vow to refrain from cutting his hair and from drinking wine, and to avoid contact with the deceased, among other restrictions. This week’s haftorah gives the background story behind the birth of a very special nazir, Shimshon Hagibor. In the haftorah, a malach appeared to the wife of a man named Manoach and informed her that she would give birth to a son. This son would begin to deliver Klal Yisroel from the Plishtim. The malach further instructed Manoach’s wife that the child must be raised as a nazir from birth, and he added that she herself must refrain from eating or drinking anything forbidden to a nazir until he enters this world. When Manoach’s wife informed him of the malach’s news, Manoach entreated Hashem to send the malach again, “to teach us what to do with the child who will be born” (Shoftim 13:8). Hashem sent the malach again, and the malach instructed Manoach, “Mikol asher amarti el ha’isha tishomer — All that I have instructed the woman, you shall keep” (Shoftim 13:14). At first glance, it would appear that the malach had returned and repeated exactly what he had said the first time, making his appearance the second time seem superfluous. R’ Shimon Schwab, zt”l, addresses this question in his sefer Ma’ayan Beis Hasho’eivah, and in the process brings down a pow-

64 / THE MONSEY VIEW

erful lesson in parenting (and, by extension, leadership in general). R’ Schwab explains that Manoach did not ask that the malach return to repeat his instructions, but to clarify a specific point. When Manoach asked the malach “to teach us what to do with the child,” he was not asking for instructions on how to raise a nazir. Rather, he was really asking how he could raise a son to be a nazir when he himself did not keep the halachos of a nazir. In reply, the malach told him, “Mikol asher amarti el ha’isha tishomer — All that I have instructed the woman, you shall keep.” In other words, the malach informed Manoach that if he wanted to raise a child to be a nazir, then he himself should be a nazir. The malach’s reply indicates that it is unwise to try to raise a child to live by a standard not held by the parents. The best way to raise a child to keep certain standards is to keep those standards yourself. Failing to personally live by the standards we expect our children to hold is unrealistic, as children learn best by example, naturally yearning to emulate their parents in every way. Furthermore, children are repelled by hypocrisy, whether it is actual hypocrisy or simply what a child might perceive to be hypocrisy. Going one step further and choosing to live by the child’s standards even when those standards do not apply to oneself also shows tremendous empathy with the child’s

situation and can engender a reciprocal response from the child, who would no doubt reflect that love and loyalty back by doing and becoming whatever the parent asks of them. R’ Binyamin Yudin, shlit”a, points out that we can learn a similar parenting lesson from Avraham Avinu, which literally means Avraham our father. It is written that Hashem loved Avraham “because he commands his children and his household ‘acharav’ (after himself), that they keep the way of Hashem, doing charity and justice” (Bereishis 18:19). Commanding his children “acharav” implies that Avraham taught his children by example, enjoining them to follow in his footsteps by acting how he acted. If we want our children to follow in the ways of the Torah, then we must also do so, and if we want them to stay far from influences that have the power to pull them away, then we must stay just as far from those influences. It certainly is not easy to make sacrifices that our children may never know about in our personal lives, but in time we will see with our own eyes how our choices bear fruit. It says so clearly in Tehillim: “Ashrei kol yerei Hashem, haholeich bid’rachav… Banecha kishsilei zeisim saviv l’shulchanecha — Happy is every man who fears Hashem and walks in His ways… Your sons [will be] like olive shoots around your table.” (Tehillim 128:1–3) So may it be for all of us.

In Legal Memo, Local Bais Yaakov Charges Clarkstown With Religious Discrimination Its contract to buy a historic property in Clarkstown may have been terminated last month, but Ateres Bais Yaakov hasn’t given up the fight in its quest to find a new home where it can educate 300 girls from preschool through high school. The Journal News reported that Ateres Bais Yaakov filed a document titled “A special memorandum of law concerning religious discrimination” last Thursday. The memo was submitted by Weil, Gotshal & Manges, a law firm well known for its successful track record of winning legal battles against municipalities that have attempted to prevent eruvs from being constructed within their boundaries as well as other forms of religious discrimination. According to the memo, Clarkstown discriminated against Ateres Bais Yaakov and violated the school’s constitutionally guaranteed religious rights when it made a determination that the property’s use as a school had expired, an action that subsequently prevented Ateres from making changes at the facility.

The memo also said that there was “troubling evidence that the Town has, far from accommodating (Ateres’) religious exercise, actively sought to infringe upon those rights.” The school’s lawyer, Ira Emanuel, said that a potential lawsuit could be looming. “We’re not trying to provoke a court battle, but we’re certainly prepared for it,” said Emanuel. Ateres has faced an uphill battle in its quest to move the school from New Hempstead to the Demarest Avenue property in Nanuet. A building inspector denied the school’s permit application in January, prompting an appeal that alleged that the zoning codes were being incorrectly applied and that the town itself had considered buying the same location for a senior center, whose usage of the property would be similar. “We would just like equal justice under the law,” said school dean Rabbi Aaron Fink. “We just want to be treated fairly.”

Lost and Found: Snakes and Alligators It was, quite literally, a wild week in the Lower Hudson Valley. A missing alligator was recovered one week after a homeowner reported that the creature had been stolen in an upstate home robbery. A $2,000 reward was offered for the safe return of Kobe, the six-foot-long alligator, reported Ramapo Daily Voice. After a fruitless one-week search, Kobe was finally found — resting happily in the next door neighbor’s yard — and was returned to his owner. Just two days later, law enforcement officials and representatives of the Department of Environmental Conservation discovered 157 snakes in the basement of a Newburgh home. The snakes were discovered after Jacobi Medical Center in the Bronx advised the authorities that they were treating a patient who had been bitten by a poisonous pit viper. A search warrant executed on the home led to the discovery of dozens of slithering reptiles. Staff members from the Bronx Zoo were brought to the home to assist in the removal of the

72 / THE MONSEY VIEW / June 12, 2019 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484

snakes, which are temporarily being kept at the zoo. The snakebite victim was hospitalized for one day and released after receiving five doses of anti-venom. He had no license for the snakes, which are only legal to own in the state of New York with a license and for use in educational or exhibition purpose, according to the DEC.

CHAPTER EIGHT Recap: When Elisheva hears that Mr. Rosenblit, a lawyer, wishes to meet with “the parents of Tziporah Genendel,” she worries that something is wrong with Tzippy’s shidduch, and that perhaps the other side wants to break it off. Miri freely spends the baby gift money that her parents had given her, and Elisheva wonders whether it is her place to direct the young couple as to how to spend their money. They sat in the stylish waiting room of Rosenblit and Etzioni, Attorneys at Law, Eliyahu perusing his ever-present pocket Chumash, and Elisheva clicking the clasp of her pocketbook open and closed. It was quiet; aside for the secretary seated at the front, no one else seemed to be there. “Attorney Rosenblit will be finishing his meeting momentarily, and then he’ll be with you,” the secretary had told them two minutes earlier. “In the meantime, why don’t you sit down?” She’d placed a tray with some crystal-style disposable cups and a bottle of Coke in front of them. “Do you want a drink?” Eliyahu asked his wife. “No, I just want to know what they want from us.” Elisheva took a tissue out of her bag. Then she put it back in and took out her cell phone. Then her wallet. “It’s about a business matter,” the lawyer had told her the day before. When he’d called, Elisheva had grabbed the phone and dashed back down to her parking lot refuge and her recent acquaintance, the cat. “A grant of sorts that the couple getting married might be able to receive.” “What’s involved in getting this grant?” she had asked, backing up from the cat and

waving with one hand at the neighbor from upstairs who was crossing the parking lot to toss her garbage bag in the dumpster. A truck was backing out of the parking lot next door to the grocery that adjoined Elisheva’s building, and the lawyer’s next words had gotten swallowed by the din. “Pardon me?” Elisheva said. “Your couple meets certain criteria, and I think the grant would be suited for them,” the lawyer had said, somewhat impatiently. “I’ll be happy to explain it all when you come to my office. Is tomorrow evening at nine good for you?” Elisheva had hesitantly agreed. When she’d told Eliyahu about it that evening, he suddenly became suspicious — far more than she herself was. “Certain criteria? What kind of criteria?” he’d asked. “He probably wants to persuade us to invest the money for the couple’s apartment in some magical real estate deal, and being that the amount of money is so minimal anyway and I don’t take these kinds of risks, he will be very disappointed. It’s a waste of our time.” “You really should be the one dealing with him, not me,” Elisheva had replied apologetically. “I just didn’t want them to call and disturb you in kollel, so I gave my num-

ber. But I can go myself if you want. I won’t sign anything without you.” But Eliyahu had shaken his head. “There’s no reason for you to waste your time or energy either. I’ll find out exactly who this Rosenblit is, and what field of law he specializes in. If it’s investments, you’ll just cancel the meeting.” That afternoon, he’d returned from kollel with some reassuring information. “I made some inquiries,” he said as he hung up his jacket. “Rosenblit is a well-known guy, and it seems he’s someone serious and reliable, not the type to be involved in shady deals. So maybe it’s worth our effort to hear what he has to say. Do I know...?” So they’d made the effort, and now they were waiting to hear what he had to say. THE KNOB on the door across from them moved, and Eliyahu closed his Chumash and slipped it into his jacket pocket. “Why only us?” he asked. “I didn’t think of it until now, Elisheva. Why only us? What about Peretz’s parents?” “Good question.” She drummed her finger on the low glass table. “If it’s something relating to Tzippy and Peretz, then his parents should really also—” “Rabbi and Mrs. Potolsky?” The lawyer emerged from his office, limping slightly, accompanied by a nattily dressed young man. “I’ll be right with you, okay?” They stood up hesitantly, and Eliyahu kept his eye on the lawyer’s retreating back as he escorted his visitor to the door. Then the lawyer turned back to them. Despite his limp, he had an authoritative air about him. He was neither young nor old. His hair was brown, with a reddish tint, though it was starting to gray. A small knitted yarmulke rested on his head. “Welcome,” he said, and motioned them into his office. They entered the wood-paneled room and sat down quietly. Rosenblit settled into his chair across from them, moved a stack of papers to the right, and leaned back. “I know you have no idea what exactly you are doing here,” he said with a smile, “but I hope I bear some good news for you today.” Elisheva saw Eliyahu’s face cloud over even more. He hadn’t trusted the man since the minute he’d heard about a “business matter.” Well, his only experience in the business world did not generate positive memories for him. Rosenblit folded his hands. “The truth is, the fact that I’m facing only you right now is purely for comfort’s sake. If you accept my client’s proposal, you will surely need to consult with your mechutanim, the Stockhammers. But for me personally, it is easier to work with just one side. I know that in your community it is accepted for the kallah’s

parents to bear most of the financial burden, so that’s why I reached out to you.” Eliyahu was quiet, and Elisheva saw that he really wanted to say something, but was restraining himself for now. “Before I explain exactly what this is all about, I want to make sure that there is no mistake here. Let’s just clarify a few details about the engaged couple. The chassan’s first name is Peretz?” “That’s right,” Eliyahu replied. “And your daughter, the kallah, is Tziporah Genendel?” “Yes. I see that the subject of the names, especially first names, plays a significant role here,” Eliyahu said. “Why is that?” The lawyer poured a cup of water for himself from the pitcher on his desk, but didn’t take a sip from it. “My client is Alexander Korman from Australia. He has no children or family, and is a Holocaust survivor; he’s almost ninety years old. He wants to do something to commemorate his parents, Hashem yinkom damam. For nearly seventeen years, he has been working on a very specific project toward this goal. His parents’ names were,” he nodded toward them, “as perhaps you’ve guessed, Peretz and Tziporah Genendel.” The silence in the room was deafening. Eliyahu spoke first. “Peretz and Tziporah Genendel Korman, not Stockhammer.” The lawyer smiled. “He didn’t expect to find a couple that would also share the last name. Believe me, as it is, when I took on this client, I thought the

whole idea was impossibly far-fetched. Did you know that there are currently in Eretz Yisroel only 862 people with the name Peretz, of which only 259 are not married? Among other Jewish communities around the world, only one other couple was found to have these names, and they are married already, disqualifying them...” “How did he get to our children, if they have not yet gotten married and are not registered anywhere as a couple?” “He mapped out all the single men with the name Peretz and waited to see to whom they would get engaged.” “In the whole world? You said he’s nearly ninety years old.” Rosenblit smiled. “Today he’s nearly ninety. Seventeen years ago he was seventy-something, and already then, he employed several people to deal with this matter. Aside from searching official databases, they contacted community leaders in areas with large Jewish populations and key figures in chassidic courts like Belz, Vizhnitz and Ger, who happily agreed to let him know if a couple bearing these two names became engaged.” Eliyahu fell silent and then passed a hand over his forehead. “I hear,” he said. “And maybe, before we ask any more questions about this interesting story, you can please tell me what your client from Australia is offering?” “I don’t know when you plan on making the wedding,” Rosenblit said candidly, “so I have no idea if this is even an option for you. And please, don’t be so suspicious, Rabbi Potol-

Popping With Flavor BY: DRAIZY WERCBERGER Artisan popcorn is all the rage these days. These recipes are extremely easy to prepare, especially if you follow my recommendation of using microwave popcorn as a base. If you have the time, though, you can always go all out and make your own popcorn.

THE MONSEY VIEW / 93

This recipe screams “summer” and “barbeque” and “grill dessert.” It’s all those things, wrapped in one!

INGREDIENTS 2 bags microwave popcorn 6 honey graham crackers, coarsely chopped

S’moreFlavored Popcorn

DIRECTIONS 1. Prepare a cookie sheet with parchment paper on it. Spray the parchment paper with cooking spray. Spread the popcorn over the cooking spray. Sprinkle chopped graham crackers, 1 cup mini marshmallows and 1 cup mini chocolate chips over popcorn. Mix slightly.

2 cups mini marshmallows, divided

2. In a pot over medium heat, melt the margarine. Lower the flame and add 1 cup mini marshmallows. Stir until marshmallows are melted.

1 cup mini chocolate chips

3. The easiest way to mix the popcorn is to put on plastic gloves and spray the gloves well with cooking spray. Pour the margarine/ marshmallow mixture over the popcorn mixture, and using your sprayed gloves, mix quickly, as mixture hardens pretty fast.

½ stick margarine 2 oz. baking chocolate, melted

4. Melt baking chocolate in a bag. Snip off a drop from the corner of the bag and drizzle chocolate over popcorn mixture. 5. Let settle for 30 minutes at room temperature before breaking into clumps. Alternatively, you can place cookie sheet in the fridge for 5–6 minutes, and then break into clumps.

As if kids need any convincing to eat popcorn… Here is a kidfriendly food turned even more kid friendly!

INGREDIENTS ¼ cup oil ½ cup popcorn kernels ⅓ cup sugar 1 tsp. salt 2 cups Fruity Pebbles 1 bag white chocolate chips

Fruity Pebble Popcorn

DIRECTIONS 1. Place oil and popcorn kernels in a large pot over high heat. Let heat for about 2 minutes and add sugar to pot. Cover pot and leave over high heat until kernels start popping. Every minute or two, shake the pot to help distribute sugar evenly. Shut the flame when the popping slows to every few seconds. 2. Prepare a cookie sheet with parchment paper on it. Spray the parchment paper with cooking spray. Pour the popcorn over the cooking spray. Sprinkle with salt and fruity pebbles. 3. Melt chocolate chips and drizzle over popcorn mixture. Using gloves that were sprayed with cooking spray, mix popcorn mixture with melted chocolate. 4. Let settle for 30 minutes at room temperature before breaking into clumps. Summer is here! It’s the season of chalkstained clothes, water fights — and backyard day camps! What can be more fun? Here, The Monsey View speaks to three day camp directors to get a better idea of what it’s like being the one who actually creates the program… and the fun.

June 12, 2019 / THE MONSEY VIEW / 105 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484

Just to get some background, how many years have you directed a day camp, and how many kids on average attend each summer?

Gitty: It was just one summer, and 52 second- and third-graders participated. I started the day camp when the school my kids attended provided summer arrangements for only upper elementary grades, which left a bunch of younger girls with very few options.

Miriam:

Leah:

About 30 years ago, when Monsey was very small, I directed a day camp for girls entering first and second grades. The first year I ran the day camp I was just out of seventh grade, and I charged $15 a week. The price crept up over the years, first to $18, and then to $20, and by the time I got married, I charged $25 a week. It was a lot of money! Now that my daughters are in high school, I’m once again directing a day camp each summer, this time together with my girls, and the older they get, the less involved I am. Each summer we have two groups of 16 girls each.

I’ve directed a day camp for about eight summers now, and I have an average of 50 girls attending each year. That may sound like a lot, but they’re divided by age into bunks, and I have about one counselor per five girls.

Gitty:

Do you advertise, or does word simply spread?

Since I created the day camp to fill a need, it automatically targeted the girls in my daughters’ school, and advertising was really not necessary.

Miriam: When I was young, we created flyers that we passed around the neighborhood (with eyes on them, since we’d learned in art that a pair of eyes get people to look!), but today we create computerized flyers that we distribute in a few schools.

106 / THE MONSEY VIEW / June 12, 2019 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484

Leah: I advertise my day camp.

Did you have any fears about things going wrong before starting out, and how did these things turn out in the end?

Leah: I’m always concerned about the safety of the kids! Each morning before the day begins, I daven extra hard that they all stay safe and happy.

Miriam:

Gitty:

Before our very first summer, I was afraid there’d be no kids! It turned out that we had only 14 or 15 that first summer, but it was perfect. The following years, we filled up right away.

I’m the type who jumps into things. If I would’ve sat down and thought about opening the day camp, I’d probably not have done it altogether. Also, my girls were very much on board when we were planning this, and that helped tremendously. Their reward was a trip to New Hampshire after the summer, which was a big deal since we had a bunch of young kids at the time.

Gitty: I’m not sure what my most memorable experience was. Every day was its own great day, with its ups and downs. However, one thing that stands out about that summer is the way my older girls blossomed. While my first-grader was part of the day camp, my third- and fifth-graders were counselors, and they really worked hard. It was extremely fulfilling for them, and they’ll never forget that summer.

What stands out in your memory as something you won’t easily forget?

Miriam:

Leah:

I can’t remember any particular experience right now, but one thing is certain: We see tremendous siyata d’Shmaya each and every day. One memory — or collection of memories — worth mentioning is of those summers long ago. In contrast to today’s day camps, our day camp back then took place outside in the heat, with no air conditioning, and no one would ever complain. There’d be no theme of the summer; we’d just have one special day each week. There’d be “Twin Day” or “Black and White Day” and so on. Also, since we had kids attending from a great mix of schools, our songs would be in Yiddish while we communicated in English — and everyone had a blast!

There’s one parent and child who stand out in my memory as extraordinary. The mother never dropped her daughter off early, and never picked her up late. The kid was an all-around doll and never gave anyone any problems. Then, at the end of the summer, the mother of the child surprised her counselor with a generous tip, and I was so impressed. She really didn’t have to, and it struck me because she had had such hakaros hatov. Another thing that always makes me sit up and take notice is the middos of little kids. Generally, even really young kids have beautiful middos, and when you see them wait for each other, or share, it’s just so touching.

108 / THE MONSEY VIEW / June 12, 2019 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484

Is there any flop you remember — something that messed up your schedule, or something that didn’t go as planned?

Gitty: We once invited a Hatzoloh member to speak to our campers, and for some reason, he didn’t show up and couldn’t be reached. It was definitely a learning experience for the kids — and for myself! I learned to always, always have a backup plan.

Miriam: Our day camp once arrived at an indoor play area we’d booked, and the guy at the counter said there was no record of any booking, even though we’d given a deposit. It turned out that there was another day camp that had scheduled a booking, and when they called to cancel, our booking was canceled by mistake. This whole mess caused a pretty stressful half-hour delay, but it all turned out wonderful. Since there weren’t enough staff members on-site to run the place, our counselors took over, and the management let us play for an even longer period of time — and charged us less than the original price.

Leah: One year, on the first day of day camp, it poured nonstop the entire day. There are four designated play areas inside my house, one for each bunk, in case of rain, but it was still very difficult. All activities had to take place indoors, and it gave us no chance to kick off the summer properly. But the day passed, of course, and many more days followed, and it was perfectly okay in the end!

June 12, 2019 / THE MONSEY VIEW / 109 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484

Was there an activity or program that you thought would be mediocre but turned out fantastic, or vice versa?

What is an all-around favorite activity that always goes over well with kids?

Gitty: It was often the projects we expected to be amazing, like crafts we spent a lot for, that turned out to be somewhat of a flop. Somehow, when kids get complicated kits with a long list of instructions, they get frustrated and overwhelmed, and very quickly mess up. These activities brought on a lot of unnecessary frustration. Simple things, on the other hand, that didn’t need too much instruction, always worked. Cheap activities, like decorating a beach ball or food crafts, were a hit each time. So were drawing on blank puzzles and doing sand art. I learned that it’s always a better idea to keep things simple — and prepare an extra activity in case the craft takes just a few minutes to put together.

Miriam: For one activity, we planned to distribute candy-filled medicine bottles from Maple Pharmacy. Each girl would get her own, with her name on it. When my girls went to get more labeled bags from the pharmacy, the manager offered to have the bags delivered to create some more spirit. In the end, not only did the pharmacy deliver the bags, but the driver gave the girls — three at a time — a ride down the block in the car emblazoned with their logo. And so it turned out that this simple activity became a day to remember.

Gitty: Any time we did a food activity — we did one each week — it was a hit. We made sushi out of nosh, rice cake carousels, and so on. Food crafts always, always worked.

Miriam: Kids love hands-on activities, like beading pacifier clips, painting ceramics, sequin art, creating napkin rings, etc. We usually did such small craft projects twice a week. Another thing that all kids love is night swimming.

Leah: Leah: I once spent 10 dollars on arts-and-crafts projects for 30 kids. I thought it would be a craft that would be just about good enough, one that would keep the kids busy for 10 to 15 minutes and give them something to take home. In the end, the kids sat over it for over an hour, and it turned out to be the highlight of the day. Another time, I purchased expensive 3-D projects — and they turned out to be too difficult, even for the oldest kids. So you never know what’s going to work.

110 / THE MONSEY VIEW / June 12, 2019 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484

Definitely baking, or anything with food, really. Kids love baking, decorating cookies with icing, or anything else food-related. (And parents, remember that it’s very possible that your child made something adorable today — and ate it up!)

How did you deal with the mess at the end of each day?

Gitty: About 10 or 15 minutes before the end of the day, each girl had to pick up 10 pieces of garbage to get a frozen treat. It’s the little things that make a big difference.

Miriam:

Leah:

It’s much more fun to make a mess than to clean it up, and much more fun to take things out than put them back! Part of my counselors’ pay goes toward figuring that out, and each Friday, after the big Erev Shabbos clean-up, we treat them for being organized. It’s also important to schedule things with time in between for cleanup.

My campers clean up whatever they were doing before moving on to the next activity. I give out tickets as we go along, and the campers then get rewarded. When it comes to moving chairs and tables at the end of each day, I feel that my counselors are exhausted from keeping everyone happy and busy in the heat for so many hours, and so I do it myself.

Gitty: As soon as you start looking at where you can save money, the work becomes very stressful. Running a day camp will cost more money than you think, but it doesn’t pay to cut corners. Looking back, I should have hired more counselors, had more help with the prep and cleanup, and heated my pool. I would have made less money — but I would have enjoyed it more. If you keep counting your dollars, the quality of the day camp will be less, both for yourself and for the kids. Another thing to keep in mind is to stay organized! It’s a lot of work to run such an operation, and staying organized is a must.

What are some dos and don’ts for wannabe day camp directors?

Miriam:

Leah:

Don’t over-spoil the kids. Purchasing expensive equipment and planning over-the-top programs are not what makes the kids happy. It’s a complete myth that a day camp needs lots of shtick; what it really needs is tons of spirit and spunk. And that’s why the counselors need to be really, really amazing. They need to be warm and make everything exciting. I make sure my counselors aren’t just there to get through the schedule. I need them to develop a connection with the girls, shmooze with them, take pictures, and so on. And you know what? At the end of summer, these counselors don’t want to leave. Also, remember to keep your day camp toichen’dig. Girls should remember that there’s a parsha each week, and learn some Pirkei Avos, etc. Camp isn’t school, but there should still be a semblance of something more than just sports and activities.

Be very, very clear with your parent body in regard to all of your expectations. They should know what time day camp begins and what time day camp ends each day, and if your campers bring their own lunch, then make it clear that you’d like them to bring sandwiches or whatever else works for you. And always, always, treat your counselors well. I take my counselors swimming, buy them ice cream, tip them, etc., because as good as the planned activities are, the counselors are the ones who will make everything happen. Treat them well so they do their job well.

112 / THE MONSEY VIEW / June 12, 2019 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484

Do you have any activity ideas that mothers can do with their children at home between school and day camp?

Gitty: Kids love Model Magic. It’s a soft clay that’s extremely clean, and it dries overnight. I buy a large tub of the white one, and my kids then color it up with markers and make the most adorable little things like mentchies, flowerpots, etc. Sometimes we work on a large family project, like a park. It’s important to stick to good brands like Crayola.

Miriam: You can do lots of things with nail polish from the dollar store. One idea is to paint washers (available in any local hardware store) with nail polish to create a shiny pendant. Then, loop a string through the pendant by pushing the two ends into the hole of the washer, and then loop them back into the middle of the string.

Leah: One activity my kids adore is listening to their mother telling them a story from a picture book, and I make that happen often by recording myself! I record myself reading the story, and whenever I get to the end of the page I say “Beep!” so they know to turn the page. For rainy days, a really fun thing to do is take a walk in the rain. My kids love this, and every now and then a car will stop and offer us a ride, and we’ll say no — we’re just taking a walk…

Boredom at Bay Overcast skies may seem like a spoiler, but they are in fact the perfect opportunity to spend the day at the beach! With visitors avoiding beaches on cloudy days, you’ll likely have the beach all to yourselves. And when you go, go prepared! Bring along your own sunshine with these fun beach activities:

DUMP TRUCKS

SANDY SMILES

Do you feel like you’re constantly nudging your boys and their dump trucks away from your garden? Give them the freedom to use their trucks in the manner intended (in their minds, at least) by having them dig, pile and build freely with the sand.

Create memorable smiles with this fun game! Have everyone draw faces in the sand, then bend over to create a silhouette and snap away! (Some sunshine is necessary for this activity.)

BOARD GAMES Etch games like tic-tactoe into the sand and play endless rounds with the “reusable” sand board.

SAND VOLCANO Classroom experiments don’t come close to the real thing! Pour vinegar into a water bottle, adding red coloring for maximum effect, then build your sandy mountain over it. Pour baking soda into the tip of the mountain (bottle opening) and watch the lava spew out!

Gardening Whether you have a sprawling acre of woodland or a modest patch of grass, here are some ideas to get your children involved in gardening:

FEEDS ON A ROLL

GRASS HEADS

Kids will love creating bird feeders and watching the birds flock to enjoy them! To create these bird feeders, simply smear peanut butter over toilet paper rolls and roll them in bird feed. Hang them in your yard, then sit back and listen to the birds singing your kids’ praises!

Using stockings, soil and seeds, kids can decorate their characters and watch them grow hair! Kids also love giving their characters “haircuts”; just take care not to cut too close to the “scalp” so as not to damage the roots or tear their “skin.”

MUD CUPCAKES SPRINKLED WITH NATURE

EASY BREEZY GARDEN WIND CHIME

Mud! Of all outdoor toys, somehow mud has its way of attracting young hands. Especially suitable for post rain days, find an inconspicuous spot where kids can dig in. Using foil or silicone cupcake holders, kids can “bake” their own “chocolate” mud cupcakes and decorate them with nature’s sprinkles, like pebbles, twigs, dandelions and flowers.

Craft your own wind chimes using bells, beads, crystals, seashells, keys, flatware, or anything that jingles. Turn it into a contest by using only whatever items you already have at home. Be creative and make some noise!

MINI GARDEN COMPETITION Whether on your lawn or in flowerpots, designate one area/pot for each child, and have the kids compete to create the prettiest garden using identical tools and seeds/ bulbs. A fulfilling all-day activity and many anticipation-filled days until the gardens yield their results.

Equipped with a magnifying glass and camera (disposables work too!), kids can use their magnifying glass to capture close-up pictures of items of interest along the way (ladybug, leaf, etc). Then develop the pictures and have fun guessing what those pictures are! (You may first want to demonstrate what the average distance of the magnifying glass to the item should be.)

Science Projects School vacation doesn’t have to mean learning vacation! Stimulate those little scientists with these awesome experiments they’ll want to repeat over and over. For budding scientists who can’t get enough of these, buy an experiment book for more inspiration.

BALLOON INFLATION

WAY TO GO!

Pour about / cup vinegar into a water bottle. Then, using a funnel, pour 2 teaspoons baking soda into a balloon. Secure the mouth of the balloon over the bottle, taking care not to drop any baking soda into the bottle. Finally, turn the balloon upright so baking soda falls into the bottle, and watch as the balloon magically inflates!

Kids who love optical illusions will be fascinated by this one! Simple, yet mind-blowing. Using markers, draw two thick, short arrows pointing in the same direction; draw one toward the top of the page and one toward the bottom. Set a glass cup in front of the paper. Slowly fill the cup halfway with water and watch what happens with the lower arrow!

MUSICAL JARS

COLOR PALETTE

A hands-on version of those timeless xylophones, kids will love creating their very own musical jars! Using identical glasses or jars, fill each one with a different amount of water, organizing them in a row from least to most. Use food coloring to color the water in each jar differently. Now, for the best part: Use a metal spoon to clang away in song!

Watch how color effects change with this colorful experiment! Fill a glass bowl with yellow water and fill a glass cup with blue water. Insert the cup into the bowl and watch how the blue color appears to have turned green when seen through the yellow water!

Outdoor Fun, Upgraded When kids have had enough of the classic outdoor activities, turn them up a notch with these impressive improvements. CHALK IT UP TO FUN Think chalk is fun? How about chalk paint? To make your own chalk paint, mix equal amounts of cornstarch and water and fill muffin pans. Drop some food coloring into the cavities and mix until well blended. Now grab some brushes and sponges and paint away!

SQUIRT GUN PAINTING A thrilling art activity for the entire family! Simply replace the water in the water guns with (washable) watercolor paint. Erect easels in your yard, and squirt away! If you prefer not to use water guns, squirt bottles work just fine too, albeit from a shorter distance. Tip: Make your own “easels” by hanging canvas/paper on trees.

BOUNCING BUBBLES This one sure won’t burst your bubble! Combine equal amounts of bubble solution and corn syrup. Stir gently so as not to create the bubbles prematurely. Use a wand or wide straw and blow gently for best results. Next, grab some microfiber gloves to bounce those bubbles in the palm of your hand! Or use plastic plates gently coated in this bubble solution. For extra fun, create your own bubble wands with pipe cleaners and beads.

POOL NOODLE VOLLEYBALL Classic volleyball will never be the same once you try this! Using pool noodles as bats and balloons as balls, enjoy this family game in a whole new way!

Create a “Mommy, I’m Bored” Jar When you’ve exhausted all options, it’s time for the kids to pitch their ideas. Have your kids write their ideas on jumbo popsticks and decorate a “Mommy, I’m Bored” jar. Keep this jar handy and draw ideas as needed.

‫גדלי' וויינבערגער‬

Loud, confident knocking interrupted my hectic Sunday morning. A quick peek through the door confirmed my assumption. Some neighborhood girls were here to pick up my daughters for a few hours. It’s that season again — spring and summer at its best! Backyard camps and fun schools are flourishing in Monsey, run by enthusiastic, motivated girls of all ages. What is driving these youngsters to spend their off-days occupying and entertaining others? Who are their gracious mothers, cooperating (?) and tolerating (!) all that come along with it? As I watched the cheerful group en route to wherever they were going, I was suddenly transported back to my youth. I once again felt empowered and successful as I reminisced about the sales we held on 52nd Street in Boro Park, selling our valuables (10-cent key chains, 5-cent erasers) at a makeshift stand in front of our house. The adventurous child in me resurfaced as I remembered my bedroom being turned into a spooky house for Chol Hamoed, and the day camps and carnivals we carefully planned. My mother was always there in the background, believing in me and cheering me on as I directed my very first production in a bungalow colony. The scripts were amateurish and the songs perhaps offbeat — but had I not written them back then as a sixth-grader, I wouldn't be writing today. Today, when my own children start brainstorming new ideas and planning ambitious projects (some of which will most likely never make it to the final launching stage), I thank Hashem, sit back and let the magic (and the mess!) happen.

134 / THE MONSEY VIEW / June 12, 2019 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484

When I see the youngsters gathering their campers, I know that these are our administrators and directors of the future, b’ezras Hashem. Their wise mothers are aware of their creativity and leadership qualities and are enabling their children to develop them in their early youth. Some of these talented, motivated young directors move on to running their very own backyard camps as high-schoolers. When you see an ad for one of those camps posted on your mailbox or door, just know that the director might be one of the most capable individuals, despite her young age. It takes a lot of perseverance and talent to get a project like this rolling. Her motivation and overflowing enthusiasm will spill right into every activity, regardless of its enormity or professionalism. However, when it comes to trusting others with the care of our precious ones, it is our duty and responsibility to do a proper safety check. Be it a Sunday Funday run by young girls, or a backyard camp run by high-schoolers, adequate supervision is a necessity. If the counselors are not of qualifying age, make sure there is an adult in the house, fully aware of all activities. In larger groups, ask questions about the counselor-to-camper ratio, and what measures are being taken to ensure camper safety. Here’s a thank you full of admiration to the amazing girls in my neighborhood and their supportive mothers. Keep your creative juices flowing, and don't let anything get in the way of your ambition. I will be looking out for your ads between school and camp to keep my daughters busy as I prepare for camp.

THE THREE COMPONENTS OF A SUCCESSFUL CAMP: Happy Campers — Grateful Parents — A Satisfied Staff Here are some tricks of the trade that will help our young directors have a nice summer experience.

CAMPERS WILL BE HAPPY WHEN: 1) Their counselors and directors are upbeat! Remember: Your attitude is contagious — make lemonade out of any lemons that come your way. There isn’t a camp in existence where everything always proceeds as planned. However, the successful camps are those where “whatever works” becomes the new plan. 2) They are treated with respect and sensitivity. However minor a camper’s need or request may be, at that given moment, to that specific camper, the counselor’s reaction (or non-reaction) and care will make a world of a difference. Every human being, even a very young child, desires to feel validated and cared for. 3) There is achdus among staff members and campers — the latter being a direct result of the first one. If you will get along with your supervisors, peers and employees, you will see the same unity among your campers. 4) There is structure and predictability. Of course, a camp without surprises doesn’t feel like camp. But keep those surprises age-appropriate and set firm boundaries according to what works for your campers. A consistent, predictable schedule results in relaxed, content campers. 5) There are opportunities for expression of creativity. Offer a variety of activities or crafts where campers are encouraged to share ideas or use their talent. You’ll be amazed to discover how much each of them has to offer.

PARENTS WILL BE GRATEFUL WHEN: 1) Their children are happy! Every parent wants for her child everything that was mentioned above. 2) They feel they can fully trust you to care

for their child. Share with them all safety precautions you will be taking, and make sure to deliver on your promises. 3) They know what’s going on. There is no specific requirement as to how to keep parents in the know. Do what works for you. It can be an occasional note, a weekly newsletter, pictures, or a verbal report when they come to pick up their children. 4) They don’t have to be involved in preparing for activities. Summer should be a break from school and homework. Keep dress-up and other requirements to bring from home to a bare minimum. 5) The focus is on safety, proper care and attention, rather than having “the most amazing activities any camp has ever had...”

STAFF MEMBERS (YOURSELF INCLUDED) WILL BE ABLE TO PERFORM WELL WHEN: (Note that their needs are similar to their campers’...) 1) Their director is upbeat! Remember: It’s contagious! 2) They are treated with respect and appreciation. Realize that everyone means well, even if occasionally performance is not as expected. Understand that humans can make mistakes. Accept every staff member for who she is, and keep showing how much you appreciate them. 3) There is structure and predictability. A consistent, predictable schedule enables a counselor (and the director, especially) to do a much better job. 4) There are opportunities for expression of creativity. You most likely hired a particular girl for her talent and capabilities. See to it that she can actually share what she has to offer.

LEGAL FUN As Yiddishe kinder, we strive to live lives in which everything is done as right as we possibly can. From washing or dressing the right hand first, to taking the right path when a road diverges and we are unsure of which path to take, we know that a “Yid geit rechts.” When doing something we haven’t done before, we try to find out, “What is the right way to do this?” Dina d’malchusa dina. Here are the legal aspects of running a summer camp:

SCHOOL SUMMER PROGRAM: Many day camps run as Summer Programs of their respective schools. In these cases the NYS Department of Health trusts them more than other camps, as the schools have already been set up properly. They assume that all safety precautions that have been taken by the school will be implemented in the summer program, too. The Department of Health sets requirements as much for Summer Programs as they do for the schools.

SUMMER PROGRAM: When a group of children are gathered safely for summer activities that do not include swimming, trips or any dangerous activities, it is considered a Summer Program. In these cases, the NYS Department of Health will generally not get involved as they focus on operations that require more safety measures. Luckily, many backyard camps will fall into this category.

CHILDREN’S CAMP: When a group of children are gathered for summer activities that include swimming (on-

site or off-site) and/or trips, or any other potentially hazardous activities, they are considered a Children’s Camp. In New York State, summer camps must have a state, city or county health department permit to operate legally. These permits are issued only if the camp is in compliance with the state’s health regulations. The health regulations are very reasonable — they are actually what every mother should want her children’s camps to comply with. These regulations include safety of the physical facilities, safety of all activities and trips, and adequate supervision at all times. When applying for a permit, a detailed safety plan must be submitted. The paperwork is the most daunting task (over 100 sheets); the actual plan is very sensible and can be easily implemented. This plan includes details for all activities on-site and off-site, and all safety precautions taken. The health regulations regarding staff include a thorough check on the reliability of the camp director; a minimum age of 16 years for counselors; a ratio of 1:12 (staff:campers), 10 percent of whom may be CITs (age 14–15); and proper supervision of all campers at all times. Two staff members on-site must be trained in first aid and CPR. The health director (EMT or RN) may be off-site, but must oversee that all health requirements are met and that all medical records are up to date. For the coming summer of 2019, the health department is requiring the camp to have a record for every camper and staff member that she has received both MMR vaccines, or that she is immune to measles. At least one inspection is made during camp hours to make sure that the physical facilities are safe and there is adequate supervision. Any violations found may result in fines, or in the event of serious violations, chas v’shalom, closing up the camp for the season.

Of course, we know that our health and safety is purely in the hands of Hashem. Our camps do their utmost hishtadlus, and we daven to Hashem to keep our children healthy and safe.

Mrs. Pessy Pollak is the founder and director of Camp Galei, a talent camp in Monsey, uniquely designed for campers who are looking for a more uplifting and fulfilling summer experience. Camp Galei is bursting with creativity and positive energy. All activities are meaningful and goal oriented, presented in a fun and productive manner, bs”d. Mrs. Pollak also runs a Sunday talent program in the winter. 136 / THE MONSEY VIEW

PARTY BALLOONS In 1824, scientist Michael Faraday laid two pieces of rubber together, with flour placed between them to prevent sticking, and then sealed the edges. The result? A balloon similar to the ones we know and love!

By 1847, balloons were being sold in London to the general public and soon became an amusing toy for the masses. Americans, however, didn’t have much part in the fun until U.S. manufacturers began producing balloons in 1907.

Sausage balloons, the type used for balloon sculpting, joined the world in 1907.

Mylar balloons — the type that carry all sorts of well wishes — entered the world in the 1970s.

A HOT HISTORY The first hot air balloon took flight in 1709, when a presentation was made before King John V of Portugal. The balloon was a small one, made of paper.

That same year heralded the flight of the first passenger-carrying hot air balloon. It held a sheep, a rooster and a duck. King Louis XVI of France and Queen Marie Antoinette were witness to the balloon flying about 460 meters, staying in the air for about 8 minutes, and then landing safely.

Hot air balloons that plan to fly above 4,500m (14,753.78 feet, to be exact) require oxygen to be carried on board.

It seems that ballooning was all the rage in 1783, because shortly after, the first human-holding flight took place, carrying two people. The flight was tethered to a tree for safety purposes.

Though not a hot air balloon, the flight of the first hydrogen balloon, which was launched in 1783 in France, is worth mentioning here. The balloon was made of silk and rubber and flew for 45 minutes, after which it met death by pitchfork when the locals who saw it landing became scared and attacked it.

There is a vent at the top of hot air balloons that pilots release hot air through to control the ascent and descent of the balloon.

The world record for highest hot air balloon flight was set in 2005 when Vijaypat Singhania reached the altitude of 69,850 feet.

140 / THE MONSEY VIEW

OTHER TYPES OF BALLOONS Balloons aren’t just fun toys. They have many practical uses as well.

Balloons are used by meteorologists and NASA to conduct research at high altitudes.

Balloons are valuable tools in surgery. They can be used to open up heart valves or to stretch esophageal tissue, in just two examples.

The allied “Ghost Army” fooled the Axis into believing they had more units than there truly were, saving many lives and helping to win the war.

A MIG-31 fighter jet balloon, owned by Russia

Balloons can be used as great decoys in war. This can be done by inflating balloons in the shape of tanks or planes to create a fake army base, or balloons can be heated and sent to fly, thereby confusing enemy missile defense systems.

BALLOON BOY HOAX In 2009, the world sat on shpilkes as a 20-foot-wide balloon touted to be carrying a six-year-old child flew across the sky above Colorado with National Guard helicopters in pursuit. The balloon flew for 90 minutes and reached a height of 7,000 feet before finally landing. Upon inspection, the balloon appeared empty, prompting investigators to fear the child had fallen out during the flight. The truth? He was hiding at home in the attic. The entire balloon flight and scare had been planned by his parents. Why? Because some people will do anything for attention!

StressMaster

ADIEU STRESS Stress is ubiquitous. Those who claim they do not experience stress may need help defining it. Stress can be something as simple as a long to-do list and as complex as medical complications or business trouble. Stress can last for just a couple of minutes, but can sometimes take years to resolve. And sometimes, there is no resolution. UNDERSTANDING STRESS Stress is a fact of life. The human body is wired to react to stress. This reaction is what helps a person take appropriate steps to resolve stressful situations. Stress only becomes a problem when it is excessive, when the stress reaction is disproportionately greater than the situation demands, or when the cause of stress is unrelenting. Stress causes the over- and under-production of many different hormones, as well as the increase or decrease of various physiological functions. When the body is in fightor-flight mode too often, it stresses the body. Stress has been identified as a significant cause of many illnesses. Excessive stress can impair and impede regular life. And yet, it is part of regular life. FINDING HELP, NATURALLY There are many substances available to help manage the effects of stress. However, many are sedative. They may effectively reduce the production of stress hormones, but will also inhibit the ability to act when necessary, which would be imperative in a stressful situation. Through a combination of specific vitamins and a blend of herbs, the StressMaster formula can aid relaxation without sedation. By reducing the production of stress hormones, the body will automatically relax. In addition, StressMaster can also provide the energy necessary to act without relying on adrenaline.

Even those occurrences that are not officially stressful may contribute to the overall stressed-out feeling. And different things will affect different people differently. It’s not stress itself in question, but how stress should be dealt with. A person can react effectively and recover easily from stress. Some people do so naturally, others need some help from nature. Stress was meant to be part of life and StressMaster can provide the tools necessary to deal with stress. Embrace your reality. You’re in control again.

NATURAL & EFFECTIVE A healthy and robust response to chronic stress requires a multifaceted approach. StressMaster from Advanced Nutrition by Zahler is an effective nutritional supplement combining natural ingredients to help you regain control. This potent blend of ingredients has far-reaching effects since by relieving stress, it enables a person to feel empowered. Stress then becomes a manageable condition in which desired results are achieved without collateral damage. A POTENT FORMULA StressMaster contains Vitamins A, C, E and Folic Acid. Valerian Root Powder, Passion Flower, Hops Strobiles Powder, Suntheanine and others help to relax, mitigating the effects of cortisol and adrenaline. Other herbs, like Skullcap Root Powder, are antioxidants to cleanse the body. Rhodiola Root Extract, Eleuthero Root Powder, Licorice Root Powder and more help boost energy levels and overall health. And GABA, which may assist in the production of serotonin, is an important neurotransmitter.
