ThatTaste Sticky Sesame Chicken 1 ½ lb Tarnegol chicken nuggets/strips ½ cup cornstarch 2 eggs ½ cup flour Oil for frying Optional additions:

steamed broccoli, scallions

Sauce:

¼ cup honey ¼ cup soy sauce ¼ cup brown sugar ¼ cup vinegar ½ cup ketchup 1 tsp sesame oil (optional) 1 frozen garlic cube 2 tsp cornstarch, diluted 2 tbsp sesame seeds

Add cornstarch to a Ziploc bag. Add chicken strips to the bag and shake until fully coated. Dip each strip in egg, then flour, and set aside.

For the sauce, add honey, soy sauce, brown sugar, vinegar, ketchup, oil and garlic cube and whisk to combine. Set aside.

Heat 1 inch of oil in a skillet. When the oil is boiling hot, drop in the chicken strips and fry for 4-5 minutes until golden brown.

Transfer to a lined pan.

Add the sauce to a small saucepan and bring to a gentle simmer. Add the diluted cornstarch and let it simmer for 2-3 minutes until the sauce thickens.

Remove from heat and pour over chicken. Sprinkle with sesame seeds and toss with steamed broccoli. Garnish with sliced scallions.

The first thing I do when I get your publication is tear out the parsha message by Malka Schneps to read on Friday night after licht tzinding. Another article I clipped each week to read on Shabbos was the Pirkei Avos column by Rabbi Dovid Steiman. The Inbox is another favorite column. Your magazine is really entertaining, informative, interesting, and my entire family enjoys it. It’s something we look forward to every Wednesday when we do our weekly grocery shopping, and even if we don’t make our order on Wednesday, we go to the grocery just to pick up our copy.

CRUNCHY WRAPS ARE EVEN BETTER! (Re: Wrap It Up, Food Section, Issue 203) I wanted to let everyone know how to make wraps even more delicious. You can toast the wrap either in the oven or toaster oven.

Alternatively, place wrap into a dry frying pan until you see golden bubbles, then flip over and repeat.

This works great even straight out of the freezer.

Note: Wraps will be soft while still warm, so fill and fold immediately to avoid cracking.

RE: CROSSWALK CAUTION! (Inbox, Issue 203) Kudos to Y.E. for the letter about pedestrian crosswalks. I want to emphasize what the letterwriter wrote: The law states that drivers must stop at the white crosswalk to let a pedestrian cross!

Unfortunately, 95 percent of drivers have no idea what the white crosswalk signifies. I hope that many readers will read this, become aware, and stop when necessary. Please, please, for the benefit of all the people trying to cross safely, follow the law!

Hoping for Future Expansion, Palisades Center Appeals Court Decision One month after a U.S. district judge rejected claims that a restrictive covenant that potentially prevented owners of the Palisades Center from further expanding was unconstitutional, mall owners have escalated the case, filing an appeal in the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit.

The Journal News reported that EkleCo, owners of the 1.85 million– square-foot mall in West Nyack, said that they were forced to accept a covenant that prevented them from any further expansions without winning a voter referendum when the mall was constructed over two decades ago. Hoping to be able to fill 250,000 square feet of unused space on the fourth floor and add a parking deck to the facility, EkleCo sued the Town of Clarkstown, saying that it was being treated unfairly, since the nearby The Shops at Nanuet had been given the right to develop the former Nanuet Mall property without being subjected to similar restrictions. That claim, as well as another saying that the covenant deprived EkleCo of its First Amendment rights, was found

to be without merit by Judge Nelson Roman last month.

A 2002 attempt to expand the mall failed, with voters rejecting a referendum on the expansion. According to figures supplied by Palisades Center, the mall generated upwards of $21 million in property taxes and $23.5 million in sales tax revenue in 2018, making it a significant contributor to the local economy.

The mall will continue its expansion efforts, said Stephen J. Congel, CEO of Pyramid Management Group, which manages the mall.

“Palisades Center and numerous levels of local government that depend on Palisades Center for tax revenues have been financially harmed by the unfair and illegal restrictive covenant that does not apply to any other property owners in Clarkstown,” said Congel.

But Clarkstown Supervisor

George Hoehmann, one of several defendants named in the lawsuit, said that he expects that the covenant will withstand yet another legal challenge.

“I am confident that the town will again have its position upheld,” said Hoehmann. “It is time for Pyramid to take this out of the courts and resolve the matter in the best interest for themselves and Clarkstown residents.”

HAZMAT Team Called in After Chemical Spill at Monsey Business Nearly 60 people were evacuated from a Melnick Drive office building after a chemical spill sickened three workers last Wednesday afternoon.

Teams from the Spring Valley and Garnerville fire departments responded to 6 Melnick Drive after reports came in about three people who felt lightheaded and had itchy throats. FIOS 1 reported that Spring

Valley Fire Chief Raymond Canario pulled the fire alarm when he arrived on scene in order to evacuate the building, a move that prevented others from being sickened by the chemicals.

The spill took place at a business that sells essential oils, according to News 12 Westchester.

Melnick Drive was closed off as a precaution while the Rockland

County Hazardous Materials team investigated the spill, and Canario said that the incident was under control within 20 minutes. The spilled chemical was identified as a plant-based cosmetic oil, which Canario described as “nothing serious.”

Three people were treated on scene by paramedics from Spring Hill Volunteer Ambulance Corps.

“Today is the last day, and they’re open until 12 a.m. What time is it now?”

“It’s 10:30. Quickly, call her, if that will make you feel good.”

“It really will. Thanks a lot for the idea.” She smiled at him and stood up to get the phone.

“Shuki? Hi, it’s Miri. How are you? When did you come home from yeshivah? Yes, I barely noticed what time it is... Tell me, can Mommy come to the phone?”

“She’s not home,” her 14-year-old brother replied. “Do you want to talk to Tzippy instead?”

“Mommy’s not home? Where is she?”

“Dunno. Not in my pocket.”

“Fine, so let me speak to Tzippy.”

Tzippy picked up the phone sounding so deflated that her older sister felt a rush of compassion overwhelm her yet again. “How are you, kallah? Why do you sound so exhausted?” As she spoke, she nodded to Yaakov, as if to say, I was right; there’s what to feel bad for her about.

“I’m fine, baruch Hashem. Just tired,” Tzippy replied slowly.

“When did you finish school today?”

“At two.”

“So that’s not too bad. It’s early.”

“Yes, but I stopped in to visit Zeidy on the way home. I try to do that on my short days.”

“How is he?”

“Baruch Hashem, the usual. He listened to my stories about school, about the courses I’m taking, and a little about the wedding plans. I straightened up his room and wiped the place down with some cleaning spray I had brought with me. I can’t stand the smell of the cleaning stuff they use there.”

“You’re a good granddaughter, I have to say.”

Tzippy only smiled, but Miri couldn’t hear it, and the quiet grated on her ears. “So if you’re tired today,” she said cautiously, “I guess you weren’t up to going out to take care of errands or anything?”

“Well, when I got home I went to sleep, and then, when I got up at about 5:30, Mommy wasn’t home anymore.” She fell silent for a minute and then continued, “Last night she also went out with Tatty; I don’t know where to. I only know — ” she could hardly get the words out — “…that they came back very tense. I didn’t hear a word they said, but I do know that they were talking a lot...”

“Yes, I told Miri that I didn’t want to buy the towels, because the linen cost enough; I heard the amount that her neighbor whispered to her... But she insisted that she had set aside a certain amount of money as a gift for me, and that she wouldn’t spend any less.” Tzippy stroked the satin edging on the towel. “So she didn’t give me much of a choice.”

“Are those towels Egyptian cotton?” Elisheva checked the label. The remorse she had felt had dissipated; it was no match for Tzippy’s smile. And if this whole Alexander Korman story was true, then she would have to start getting ready for Tzippy’s eyes to be constantly lighting up — even if she, Elisheva, was not the actual source of it. “Good. That’s very good-quality stuff. Put it all in a bag on top of the closet in the bedroom, where no one can get to it.”

“Sure.” Tzippy packed the items back into the bag as Elisheva gazed at her lovingly. What difference did it make who did what, as long as her child was truly happy?

For best results, use real pans, as they get hotter than disposable pans and thus cook faster and yield crispier results.

Cheesy Spaghetti Squash With Roasted Tomatoes

INGREDIENTS

DIRECTIONS

1 medium spaghetti squash

1. Preheat oven to 400°.

Salt and pepper to taste

2. Place spaghetti squash on a baking pan and bake for 20 minutes. Remove from oven and cut in half lengthwise. The insides will still be cold and easy to handle. Remove and discard pulp. Sprinkle squash with salt and pepper, and drizzle with olive oil. Place squash halves face down and return to oven for 30–35 minutes, until edges begin to caramelize. Remove from oven and allow to cool face down. Once cooled, fork the flesh into strands and transfer to a bowl.

Olive oil 1 pint cherry tomatoes 4 cloves garlic 4 fresh basil leaves, finely chopped 1 cup marinara sauce Pizza cheese, to taste

3. To prepare the roasted tomatoes, slice tomatoes in half lengthwise.

Spread onto baking pan with salt, pepper, crushed garlic and a drizzle of olive oil. Bake till blistered and caramelized.

4. Add roasted tomatoes, fresh basil and marinara to the bowl with the squash. Mix well. Transfer to baking dish and top with cheese.

Bake uncovered until cheese is bubbly and melted and just starting to brown.

Mock Lokshen Kugelettes This recipe was inspired by my mother, who created these in a Pesach’dig version. It serves as a light, sweet treat that rounds out a main dish beautifully with all of the luxury and none of the heaviness.

4. Spray muffin tins with oil spray. Spoon mixture into tins and top with streusel crumbs. Bake for 50 minutes at 400°.

Elaborate mishloach manos and envelopes filled with Chanukah gelt find their merry way to teachers, rebbeim, bus drivers, tutors, principals (and sometimes even the secretary) every year. But there’s one school employee who the rare few seek out for any form of connection, let alone to gift… He’s the one whose number on the caller ID sends a tingle of dread down the spine of many. He’s the one who causes parents to slink toward the shadows should a chance encounter be about to happen. He’s the one who seeks to lay hands on your hard-earned money... Yes, he’s The Tuition Collector. And he’s taking us on a tour of what his job entails.

“There really isn’t much to say,” I’m warned when I call to schedule an interview with Mr. Silber*, a school tuition collector who prefers not to reveal his real name. “What can be said about collecting money?”

Several days later I call him again, and this time I’m prepared to coax words of wisdom from him, reticent as he may be. Turns out Mr. Silber has much to say, and every word is worth its weight in gold — to be paid toward tuition, of course!

“Forgive me,” I begin, “but am I allowed to bait you?”

“Okay...” he answers.

“Why is that tuition collectors have a reputation for being bullies?”

I ask, knowing that such a question will open the floodgates.

“We’re not bullies!” my interviewee insists. Then he sighs.

“There’s a lot of background information that most people don’t know, a whole different world that a tuition collector sees.”

And so we begin.

“EVERYONE KNOWS that Yiddishe schools receive certain government programs, and that the funds are earmarked to cover specific expenditures, such as transportation and food. But what many people don’t realize is that schools are still left with major deficits that the government doesn't cover.

“As a tuition collector, I sit in the office and see the bills that come in every day,” Mr. Silber says. “The total costs are staggering! Each child costs the school or cheder between $600 and $800 a month to educate and care for. And yet, almost nobody in the heimishe school system pays that much tuition for their child. It would simply bankrupt most families. So how does that bill get paid? That’s where fundrais-

ing comes in. Dinners and appeals are made to cover the tuition gap, to continue caring for the community’s children. Sometimes, though, even that’s not enough.”

Mr. Silber pauses thoughtfully.

“Schools and chedarim are not like businesses that struggle the first year they’re open but become more stable by the second year, and cut even on the third. There’s no cutting even. Everything that comes in goes out. And sometimes, the going out is more than the coming in.”

“What do you in that case?” I ask.

“Most mosdos have a board of members who are the backbone of the school or cheder; if funding runs low, these people — who are often blessed with personal wealth — will reach into their own pockets and extend loans to keep the ball rolling.

Without them, many mosdos would close down.”

Curious as to what the money that comes in is used for, I ask Mr. Silber about the breakdown.

He compares running a school to a recipe. Every recipe has ingredients, some of which are major and

some are which are minor. Sometimes, the minor ingredients can be bypassed. But the main?

That’s what makes the dish.

“Payroll is the main ingredient of a school.

It’s what fuels the entire system.”

And payroll is typically due every two weeks.

“The amount we pay our educators is really shameful,” Mr. Silber passionately tells me.

“We should feel emes’dige shame over how little we pay them. These people spend more time with children than their parents do. They build them up, encourage them, feed them, care for them and teach them… If we logistically can’t pay these educators what they’re worth, the least we can do is pay them on time!”

There are some schools, he tells me, that hand over paychecks up to eight weeks late.

“Do you know what this does to a teacher?

To a rebbi? When an educator walks in not having been paid in weeks, his head isn’t there. His heart surely isn’t. You know where he’s at? He’s over at Orange & Rockland or at Suez, worrying about how to pay those bills. The stress is unbelievable!”

Mr. Silber pauses to let his words sink in.

“When the stress of feeding his family is resting on a rebbi’s head, you’ll be lucky if even 35 percent of his ko’ach is invested in the children in his class. It’s just not possible to be fully present when the pressure is so intense.”

“What parents don’t realize,” Mr. Silber emphasizes, “is that by paying tuition in a timely manner, parents are actually directly affecting the education of their own child. That paycheck sitting in the rebbi’s pocket infuses him with the ko’ach he needs to really care for the children he’s entrusted with.

“So to answer your question about tuition collectors being bullies, it’s not that we try to be aggressive, but when we come into the office and see an overdrawn account and a list of unpaid tutions... well, that makes us become a little tougher. We’re not collecting for ourselves. We’re collecting for the employees who deserve to pay their bills on time and come to work stress-free. That’s why I call every family at the beginning of every month, and again in the middle of the month if I need to.”

On that topic, Mr. Silber enjoins parents to try to pay even before the month begins.

“When you go to the grocery, you don’t take a bottle of milk home, drink it, and then pay for it. You pay first and then make use of it. In this case, you’re purchasing an education.”

He urges parents to send a check or give their credit card number as close to the beginning of the new month as possible, or to at least provide a head check, in the worst-case scenario.

“But what about parents who are truly strug-

gling to stay financially afloat?” I ask. “What if they really can’t pay?”.

“Even the most financially strapped families would be able to put together a chasunah if their child were engaged. The hall might be cheaper and the food might be simpler, but that chasunah would hap-

Maybe they’ll have to buy a used car instead of a new one or skip the brandname clothing to cover the full expense of education, but they’ll be actively bettering the lives of their children’s educators — and their own children’s lives.”

He adds another point. “Those parents who can afford to foot the entire $600 to $800 it costs to educate their child each month and don’t pay it are wrongfully accepting tzedakah with their hands wide open. When money comes in from appeals, it goes to pay their child’s education that they aren’t covering. How is that okay?”

I nod my head in agreement, but decide to turn the tables on him.

“Speaking of what’s ‘okay’ or not, let’s discuss registration cards. The very idea of a child not being able to board his bus because he doesn’t have a card seems to be risking terrible embarrassment to the child.

How is that okay?”

Mr. Silber sighs again, heavily this time.

“I want you to know that every time before there is registration I go to the Ribnitzer tzion and daven that I have siyata d’Shmaya for all parents to pay off their debts. The fear is great that I may have to do something painful, but it is only in order that Yiddishe kinder should have bread on their tables.”

He continues, “Is there a better way? I wish there were. Unfortunately, though, some parents play games, refusing to pay until they’re pushed against the wall, so to speak. It’s only those cards that cause the cash to come in. I’ll be the first to abolish the registration card system should someone come up with a better idea. I’d love to hear ideas from The Monsey View readers!”

I have one last question that I know is on many a parent’s mind.

“What’s the shtick about girls

“If we logistically can’t pay these educators what they’re worth, the least we can do is pay them on time!” pen one way or another, right?”

The question is rhetorical, obviously.

“The same goes with education in a frum school. Our goal as a school is to work with the parent body. We try our best to help parents out and make that education happen. If a family is really in a crisis, we might temporarily lower their tuition and up the fundraising to cover the extra expense that we’re shouldering for them, but we can’t give an education completely for free, just as a caterer wouldn’t give food away for free. He has expenses to cover, as do we.”

And the expenses are many, with revenue practically nonexistent in the schools Mr. Silber has worked for. If there’s ever any extra money — which there rarely is — it immediately goes toward enhancing the educational experience of the children, such as by adding a bus for better transportation or giving a long-due raise to a teacher.

“If every family would at least pay on time, even at the discounted price we’re giving it for, we’d be in a decent situation. And if they could cover the full cost of educating their child… what a bracha!”

Those families really do exist, as Mr. Silber explains. “Just as there are struggling families, there are families who live very comfortably.

schools charging 12 months of tuition while only providing 10 months of school?”

“So it goes like this: The costs of educating a child run into the thousands per year. We, as tuition collectors, calculate the total cost and try to divide it into more manageable sums, according to what the parents can pay per month. The actual cost of education doesn’t change; just the price of the payments does, when stretched out over two additional months.”

“So, really, a parent could make the payments in any installments they want, rather than in twelve monthly sums?” I say.

“Correct. It doesn’t have to be divided by month. Aderaba, give us a lump sum at the beginning of the year and we’ll be thrilled! Parents should feel free to divide their tuition payments into as few installments as they’d like, as long as they come through with their payments.”

Perhaps, though, the most important part of the discussion takes place when Mr. Silber brings up the Gemara in Beitzah (16a) that says: ‫כל מזונותיו של אדם קצובים לו‬ ‫מראש השנה ועד יום הכיפורים‬ ‫חוץ מהוצאת שבתות והוצאת י"ט‬ .‫והוצאת בניו לתלמוד תורה‬ A person’s livelihood is allocated to him from Rosh Hashanah to Yom Kippur, except for expenditures for Shabbos, yom tov, and the cost of his children’s learning of Torah.

Just as the Shabbos and yom tov bills are covered by Hashem, so too are the bills that are incurred by providing our children with a Yiddishe education.

If that’s the case, what are we all waiting for? Pull out your checkbooks, and instead of letting Mr. Tuition Collector’s number appear on your caller ID, pick up the phone, and make your number appear on his. It’s the greatest investment you’ll ever make. *Name changed for privacy

THE JAGGED STONES beneath his feet caused the young man to stumble, the plow to dance wildly in unnatural rhythm. Salty tears mingled with sweat, forming rivulets that ran into Eliezer’s mouth. He halted the plow and settled himself upon a protruding rock, allowing the tears to freely flow. He didn’t hear the footsteps behind him.

“What causes you to weep, my son?” The concerned voice of Eliezer’s father cut through the sounds of sobbing. Looking up, he watched his father approach, bending over him with concern. “Is it because the land is difficult to plow? Come. You will work with softer earth.”

Eliezer obediently stood up and followed his father, who led him to a field where the ground was easily broken. There were many fields such as this one, and many fields as the other, for the family wealth was great. Father had reared his children upon this land, teaching them to understand the rhythms of the earth, to coax forth its bounty.

Setting his plow in place, Eliezer walked along behind it, watching the ruddy earth spill over the sides of the blade in a gentle wave. The work was much easier here, but soon the tears began to flow again.

“What causes you to weep now, Eliezer?” Father asked, perplexed.

“I weep because I desire to learn Torah,” Eliezer answered, wiping the tears from his eyes.

“But Eliezer, you are no longer a young lad,” Father said. “We shall seek for you a wife and you will have children, and then you will take them to learn.”

Father walked away, the chapter closed.

But Eliezer continued to feel the burn within his soul, the yearning to connect with his Creator through the words of Torah mi’Sinai.

He decided that he would fast. He would pray for clarity; surely Hashem would guide him.

Two weeks passed in this manner until Eliyahu Hanavi appeared to Eliezer, instructing him to travel to Yerushalayim, to join the scholars there.

Eliezer headed for the most prominent beis midrash, and without fear, approached its head, a rabbi of great renown. There, his tears poured out again as he described his hunger to learn. The rabbi took pity upon him and taught him the basic tenets of Yiddishkeit that he had never mastered. Slowly they plodded along, with Eliezer learning bits and pieces, day by day.

What began as a simple foray into the world of tefillah soon lead Eliezer to step into the vast sea of halacha. He painstakingly learned two laws per day, slowly expanding his knowledge until he himself was a veritable fount

of Torah. His desire to learn was so great that he eventually became accepted as a regular student in the yeshivah, and caught up to the others who’d already spent years there. * * * * * “Why should he inherit your land, Father? He’s abandoned us, left us behind and run away!”

Eliezer’s brothers stirred their father’s wrath, fueling his anger. Every time he thought of the way Eliezer had disappeared, the sparks of fury rose up inside him.

“Disown him. Make a vow that he won’t have a share in any of your possessions!”

Father looked at his hardworking sons and nodded his head.

They are right, he thought. I’ll do just that. I’ll go to Yerushalayim, and if the Rav agrees, I will disown Eliezer. * * * * * A great banquet had been prepared for Yerushalayim’s most distinguished men on the night that Eliezer’s father arrived in Yerushalayim, and as befitting a man of his prestige, he appeared at the event — knowing he’d be welcomed in.

The rabbi who had so patiently taught Eliezer noticed his father in the crowd and had him seated near his own place. Then he turned to Eliezer, who was also in attendance, and instructed him to stand and share a dvar Torah. All eyes were upon Eliezer, including those of his stunned father.

Eliezer began shyly at first, but soon found momentum, and as he spoke, pearls of Torah wisdom spilled forth. His face shone as the sun!

The rabbi who had taught him approached him from behind and kissed Eliezer upon his head, exclaiming, “Happy are you Avraham, Yitzchok and Yaakov, for this one has come forth from you!”

In the audience, a man by the name of Hyrkanus stood up.

“Rebbi Yochanan should have rather said: ‘Happy am I, for he has come forth from me!’”

Needless to say, Rebbi Eliezer was not disowned...

On Transportation I recall the overwhelming frustration the first time my son missed his bus. Walking down the steps after a long half-hour of trying to get a much-smarter-than-myself three-year-old to swallow his breakfast, I watched the bus circle the dead end without even pausing in front of our house.

Desperately, I dragged my son to a nearby stop, and after missing the bus there too, took a car service to cheder.

Once my son was safely in cheder, I dialed the bus manager’s extension, intent on giving him a piece of my mind.

After all, this was the first time we were running late, and we’d even made it outside!

Couldn’t the driver have given us one minute of his time?

I’m not sure the bus manager feels the same, but I, for one, am glad I placed that call. In just five minutes, I received enough of a glimpse into the backstory of school transportation to politely thank him for “everything you do.”

I’m certain you’ll feel the same after hearing the other side.

The Parents’ Take: Mrs. L., who lives in a condo in the main Monsey area, instructs her preschool son’s bus driver to drop her son at her home in the event she is not there to personally receive him.

“Being that I work out of the house and come home close to the bus dropoff time, I prefer my son to wait alone on a block of frum families than to return to the cheder building alone with an unfamiliar driver.”

With reasons varying from inclement weather to preparing supper at the kitchen window or coming home from work close to the arrival time of the bus, many mothers second the opinion that allowing children off the bus without an adult present is a safe (and convenient) option.

The Cheder’s Take: Before discussing the legal aspect, a local mosed’s bus manager wondered aloud whether parents would regularly allow pre-school aged children to play outside without adult supervision. And if a parent would feel uncomfortable allowing such play, then why is a child waiting home alone any different?

And legally, once a parent brings their child to the school bus or facility, the school is responsible for the wellbeing of the child and will be (and have been) held accountable for any safety concerns until the child is handed over to the parent or guardian.

“This puts us in a spot where acceding to the parent’s requests can potentially lead to Child Services opening an investigation on our school, and often on the student’s bus driver as well.”

This situation, in fact, has occurred in the past when a police officer noticed a child waiting for his parents alone on the front steps, after being dropped there by his school bus.

The Cheder’s Take:

Parents who are always at the curb by the time the bus pulls up feel that in the rare case that they are not ready or the bus is early, they deserve that extra moment, honk — or both.

And then there are the parents who are usually “almost there” when the bus arrives and expect the bus driver to “see them coming.”

Mrs. A., a mother of six children who attend local mosdos, feels that “If my child is on the way down the block, and the bus driver cannot wait, then he’s obviously been instructed to complete a route — not to pick up children.”

In recent years, honking when waiting to pick up a student has become illegal for school buses in the Monsey area.

In addition, multiply six latecomers by the 60 seconds it takes for a child to walk from the kitchen chair to his bus, and you have several other parents, who have their own busy schedules, running late.

“It is important to mention,” adds one bus manager, “that bus drivers aren’t meant to be, and do not get paid to be, car service drivers. They cannot be expected to provide exclusive service for each student.”

Many mothers find that they occasionally need to tweak the pickup/dropoff addresses of their children’s bus, especially when dealing with simchos and appointments. And why not? The process seems so simple.

“I see the bus passing my parents’ house anyway,” one mother says. “Can’t a fellow Yid go a bit out of his way and drop my child there?”

Transportation:

The Cheder’s Take: Ironically, almost every staff member is involved in the seemingly simple process of a bus change. The secretary takes the message, which is then relayed to the classroom teacher and bus driver. The teacher is responsible to inform and remind the student and bus monitor of the update, and later, the teacher supervising at dismissal must ensure that the child gets onto the correct bus, as children will often head to their usual bus by rote.

Administrators and bus managers agree that “Even when on the original route, bus changes are the leading cause of complications.” The melamed, bus teacher and driver, who are not the child’s parents, must remember the change in schedule while juggling their regular responsibilities. And older children often forget the reminders and get off at their regular stop by mistake.

The secretary at a local mosed office stresses the necessity of following the instructions, including the time restrictions, provided to parents in regard to bus changes, as the mix-ups they are meant to prevent are an almost daily occurrence.

It is also worth mentioning that asking parents to avoid bus changes unless absolutely necessary is not about the reluctance to do favors; it’s about keeping our children safe.

• Be at the curb at least three minutes prior to the bus’s scheduled arrival.

• Arrange with a neighbor to receive and supervise your child in the event you are delayed.

Bus changes: • Be sure to have someone await the child outside the updated address.

• When a bus change is scheduled for more than a day, remember to call the school office the day the schedule returns to normal.

On Money Collections Growing up, there was a little white paper taped to the corner of our kitchen refrigerator. Any time one of us would come home from school with a request for money — be it for a project, trip or gift — it was notated on the little sheet of paper. At the end of the school year, we’d add up the single digits and come to a whopping total amounting to a couple of hundred dollars spent among us seven school-aged children.

Recently, I found a note requesting four dollars to cover the expenses of my preschooler’s ha’adamah garden, and I wonder if the time has come to start my own miscellaneous fees list.

In May, students are sent home with an ERCSD book program contract for their parents to sign. This contract lists the textbook/workbook titles needed for the upcoming school year.

When the school year begins, however, another letter requesting “book money” (the amount varies according to school and is greater for the girls) is brought home.

“Why are we asked for book money,” parents repeatedly ask, “if district funding is clearly providing them?”

Fundraising events: • If you are unable to attend an event, send your donation to the school with your child or by mail.

• You can show your support by offering to help with phone calls, food or transportation in place of a monetary donation.

The Cheder’s Take: “Contrary to common belief, the School District funding for school books is actually a fixed amount ($58.25 per student),” an administrator in a growing Monsey cheder says. “To obtain these funds, a contract signed by the parents containing the exact list of required books must be submitted to the district in June.

The approval process at the school district’s office is lengthy and tedious, and even slight discrepancies — like the requested book cost bringing the bottom line above the funding allowance — results in a book being omitted from the list.”

For our mosdos, this deadline usually passes way before the accurate number of students is known. This, along with the fact that there are usually a number of students living outside the district who are not eligible for funding, means that in every classroom there are students not receiving this allocation.

“The average textbook price is greater than $20,” the administrator further explains, “and students use way more than three books per semester. So after gaining approval for the purchases, and accepting full responsibility for these books, there remains a lot of books to be purchased.”

By collaborating with other schools, the remaining books are purchased at greatly discounted prices, and these savings are passed to the parents.

“Were parents to purchase these books on their own,” another administrator adds, “purchasing costs would be upward of one hundred dollars per student.”

The Parents’ Take: The multiple requests for petty cash throughout the semester are cause for plenty of frustration for parents.

Parents mainly want to understand why. Why these extra expenses? Can’t some of the tuition or registration money be put aside and labeled miscellaneous?

Also, most agree that adding an extra hundred dollars named “x-y-z” to the list of yearly costs per child is preferred to fumbling for exact cash several times a year.

The Cheder’s Take: Truthfully, students today are provided with a very high standard of extras. Principals and teachers, to their credit, are constantly networking and introducing innovative educational and extracurricular activities to the classroom.

“Only a percentage of the monthly cost per child is covered by tuition — if paid in full,” an administrator shares. “The rest of the funds are painstakingly raised by fundraisers, who spend their waking hours worrying about covering the monthly fixed expenses.”

Unfortunately, administrations cannot afford the budget increase of these extras. Thus, the only option the menahel has is collecting a minimal amount from each parent. And parents are usually happy to give their children the chance to go along on the suggested trip, or partake in a project or purchasing a gift for a teacher.

“Adding the full cost to the initial registration fee,” the administrator adds, “would usually result in parent negotiations lowering the added fees, which would add another expense to the already overwhelming budget.”

The Parents’ Take: In a local toy store, a woman was looking to purchase a specific card collection, but was unable to locate it. To the bewilderment of all onlookers, another woman in line chimed in, “These cards cannot be purchased anywhere; they were printed by the mosed for the party.”

Annoyed, the first mother expressed her frustration with a question voiced by many local women: “Why are parents being manipulated to attend fundraising events by the peer pressure created between the children?”

The Cheder’s Take: On prizes and pecklach, Mrs. S., who runs the annual women’s party for her sons’ mosed, is glad to explain, but first comments on the general topic.

“When I win the lottery,” she states passionately, “the first cause I will donate to is my son’s cheder! It is unbelievable how much they do for our children and under what circumstances.”

About the justice of preparing incentives for the children, she sighs.

“I completely understand what the mothers are unhappy about, but from my experience, it’s what works. The children push their mothers to attend, and if possible, they will.”

Regarding mothers who, for whatever valid reason, cannot attend, she adds, “Many times a mother will call or come to my house to claim the prizes for her children, and I am glad to give them to her.”

Usually, prizes are available (and in many schools officially distributed) to all students. However, it is the parents’ responsibility to recognize and appreciate the extreme effort and time it takes to raise the funds necessary to maintain the school budget.

Chinuch. It is the cornerstone, the foundation, of our very lives. And chinuch is also the cornerstone and foundation of our town Monsey!

Here we will explore the fascinating origins of our special community and the major role that Torah education played in its establishment. The Monsey View reached out to Rabbi Yosef Mashinsky, master mechanech and menahel of Yeshivas Beis Dovid for some background.

Having grown up in a home that was deeply involved in chinuch since the early years of Monsey, Rabbi Mashinsky is known for his knack of adapting his chinuch methods to the needs of the day while remaining connected to old-school values.

It is, perhaps, the intersection that can be labeled the “center of town.” Main Street, Route 306 and Maple Avenue. Monsey’s grown and Monsey’s changed, but interestingly, the heart of town has not. It was around this very corner that Yiddishkeit placed its first roots many years back, becoming the nucleus from which Monsey burgeoned.

AISH DOS AND THE BAIS MEDRASH ELYON CAMPUS Harry and Hilda Halberg lived on Old Nyack Turnpike. Dabbling in real estate, Hilda learned that Rabbi Shraga Feivel Mendelowitz was looking for an out-of-town location to house his newest project: the Aish Dos Teachers’ Training program.

pus on Main Street, with buildings and bungalows, formerly used for a regimented military-style school.

It was owned by an individual who refused to sell to a Jew, but, with the offer seemingly suited to Reb Shraga Feivel’s purposes, this clause in the seller’s contract was circumvented by a third party purchasing the property on their behalf.

The rest, as they say, is history,

and Main Street corner Maple Avenue became a center for Torah and Yiddishkeit.

With fire in his heart and a farreaching vision, Reb Shraga Feivel was undisputedly the individual most largely responsible for Torah in America. As the Satmar Rav, the Klausenburg Rav, Rav Aharon Kotler and other gedolim of the time attested, they all felt they could not have accomplished anything if not for the groundwork laid by Reb Shraga Feivel. From the time that he joined Mesivta Torah Vodaas, he helped hundreds of bachurim from all over the United States learn and grow in Torah. But Reb Shraga Feivel was not one to sit back. What would become of the thousands of Jewish families who were falling away across the vast landscape of the United States?

That’s why Reb Shraga Feivel dreamed of reaching beyond the concentration of Torah in New York to open yeshivah day schools in every viable Jewish community across the country. For such a project, he needed rebbeim. To attract families who were willing to let go of secularism and engage in full-time Torah learning, the mechanchim needed to

be of professional caliber. At Aish Dos, top bnei Torah would be trained to achieve such standards.

Reb Shraga Feivel brought a group of bachurim from Torah Vodaas out to Monsey. He wanted the most well-rounded individuals and selected quality boys, many of whom ultimately went on to become the greatest mechanchim. The list reads like a star-studded roster of the greatest mashpi’im of the Torah renaissance in America, including Reb Simcha Wasserman, zt�l, son of Reb Elchonon Wasserman, hy�d; Rav Moshe Wolfson, shlit�a (Mashgiach of Torah Vodaas and Rav of Emunas Yisroel); Reb Avraham Abba Friedman, zt�l, and Reb Sholom Goldstein, zt�l (of Bais Yehuda of Detroit); and Reb Manis Mandel, zt�l (of Yeshiva of Brooklyn).

The project lasted only a short period as the innovative concept of creating such a movement was still beyond the imagination of the philanthropists who naturally would have carried the expense. Thus, the Aish Dos program phased out, and the bachurim returned to Brooklyn to continue their studies at the mother yeshivah, Torah Vodaas.

Soon, an alternate plan came up for the vacant yet equipped property. It would be used as an advanced place of learning for bachurim and yungerleit! Finally, in 1944, Bais Medrash Elyon opened its doors.

Highly advanced bnei Torah joined the yeshivah. Rav Reuven Grozovsky was appointed as Rosh Yeshivah, and Reb Shraga Feivel himself moved to Monsey, relocating next door to the yeshivah and delivering shiurim to the bachurim.

The rural, isolated setting was ideal. There wasn’t much happening in Monsey — there were hardly any Yidden, hardly any houses. What had been a hamlet of isolated homes, some dating as far back as the Revolutionary era, became a vibrant Torah community, with the yeshivah at its center. “Some of the original houses were very old,�

Rabbi Mashinsky shares. “My parents’ home, demolished some 15 years ago, would have been close to 200 years old today!�

And so, the entire yishuv of Monsey came about on account of the fact that Reb Shraga Feivel was seeking a way to improve the matzav of chinuch in the United States!

YESHIVA OF SPRING VALLEY The rustic area attracted Yidden for other reasons, too. Hotels and summer homes drew a crowd in the summertime, and some people began to stay all year round.

Soon, Yeshiva of Spring Valley was opened to accommodate the children of these residents. As

the cradle of elementary school chinuch in Monsey, Yeshiva of Spring Valley, established in 1943, actually predated Bais Medrash Elyon. Of course, Bais Medrash Elyon families sent their children to this school, and soon some of them became rebbeim there.

“Yeshiva of Spring Valley merited to assemble an outstandingly chashuve staff!” Rabbi Mashinsky says. “My father, Reb Hershel, was a Torah Vodaas boy from kindergarten onward. As an alumnus of Aish Dos and Bais Medrash Elyon, it was only natural that he would dedicate his life to chinuch. After seeking counsel from the Klausenburg Rebbe, he accepted a teaching position at Yeshiva of Spring Valley while still a chasan.”

It was at Yeshiva of Spring Valley that the elder Rabbi Mashinsky spent the rest of his teaching career, later serving as a guidance counselor as a retiree.

The menahel who brought the fledgling yeshivah to where it stands today was Reb Dov Greenbaum, a”h, son-in-law of Reb Shraga Feivel Mendelowitz. With a mission to bring Torah to as many Yidden as possible, Rabbi Greenbaum would peruse the local phone books and dial the numbers of any Jewish-sounding names. He worked to convince parents to send their children to his school that offered secular studies at a level on par with local public schools, in addition to Hebrew studies, and he made sure to discount the tuition when necessary. Here, too, the Halbergs left their mark, with Harry Halberg also contributing to the search for talmidim. He would walk the streets, searching for Yiddishe children who would be interested in joining the yeshivah. After World War II, people were more receptive to this concept. Some of the children enrolled were from families that did not keep Shabbos, but they later emerged as true ehrliche Yidden.

“Chinuch in those days,” Rabbi Mashinsky notes, “was also a tool used to reach out and bring Yidden into the fold, quite different from the concept of cheder today.”

Monsey continued to grow, with more bnei Torah and more baalei batim moving out to the area, but soon winds of modernity began to buffet at the very foundations of the yeshivah. With mesiras nefesh, certain members of the board of directors undertook to shoulder the entire burden of the yeshivah from their own

Turning the focus to changes in the classroom over the last few decades, Rabbi Mashinsky shares some points of interest.

How is today’s curriculum different from the curriculum of years ago?

Back in the day, there were classes with few students. In many homes, there was no knowledge of Yiddishkeit. As such, much emphasis was placed on the basics of Yehadus, and teaching about subjects such as Shabbos and yom tov.

Today, chedarim are more academically oriented.

Yiddishkeit at home is flourishing. The majority of parents have high expectations and there is a greater demand for a more intense level of education. Starting at an earlier age, boys cover more ground, in depth. Years ago, bachurim first heard of meforshim like the Pnei Yehoshua in their second year of mesivta. Today, learning in-depth is introduced in certain yeshivos as early as seventh grade.

Is that a positive change?

First, it is an indication that children are actually capable of more than we would imagine.

No harm is done if taught correctly, by a highly skilled educator. It makes learning more interesting and colorful and excites the child, leaving him feeling good about himself.

The challenge is keeping all children up to this intense, deeper level. However, this is also achievable since today’s rebbeim are highly skilled, with an incredible ability to reach every student.

What are the challenges facing mechanchim today?

Distractions. It’s hard to keep children focused.

The rebbi has a tremendous challenge on a daily basis: grabbing the children’s attention. Let us say a child is exposed to an electronic device — not necessarily a non-kosher one, yet one that is very entertaining. If the rebbi tends to lecture lengthily, it is very hard for the child to follow.

The current reality is that children are exposed to many distractions that formerly did not exist.

Is there a change in parental involvement in chinuch in recent years?

As a whole, parents are more involved. People are more focused on what goes on in cheder; they feel they have an understanding and should have

more of a say. Parents probably used to leave more up to the hanhalah and teaching staff. In a way, it is good. It’s important to be involved.

Automatically, the rebbi will be more focused on the child whose parent is advocating for him. In moderation, involvement is a healthy thing.

How have teaching methods changed?

In earlier years, even parents had a more disciplinary approach. Today’s parents are concerned that their children are delicate and fragile. They will tell the rebbi or hanhalah, “My child is sensitive. Take it into consideration…”

Rebbeim are also more sensitive, and positive encouragement is natural to most rebbeim.

When positive reinforcement was first introduced, old-timers had no idea what it meant.

“Define that!” they demanded. Today, you cannot consider becoming a melamed without it. The “yemin mekarev” is very strong.

My father, Reb Hershel Mashinsky, z”l, was an exception. Unique in his day, he didn’t lift his hand to a child. The secret of his success was a combination of factors: One, his overwhelming yiras Shamayim made him the ultimate role model, an icon to be looked up to and emulated.

Second, his heartfelt tefillos included his beseeching Hashem for each talmid’s hatzlacha. And third, his inspirational teaching style was unbelievable. He lived and breathed what he taught. His whole countenance was aflame as he taught the parsha of the week. His students saw the events and characters come alive before them.

Finally, my father was famous for his incredible, overwhelming love for his talmidim. He repeated in a seminar for the mechanchim of Bais Dovid a vort learned from Ahavah Rabbah, which begins and ends with ahavah. Before Shema in the morning, we say “Ahavah Rabbah…,” ending with, “habocher b’amo Yisrael b’ahavah.” In between, we ask, “v’sein bilibeinu binah…” One must start with ahavah and end with ahavah if he wants to be able “lilmod u’lelamed.” If not, don’t even start, he concluded.

A rebbi once asked my father what to do with a disobedient child. My father’s reply: Love him.

And if he doesn’t respond? Love him even more!

funds, rather than waver under the pressure to introduce modern and Zionistic changes. Among the great people involved at the time were Mr. Moshe Yitzchok Mendlowitz and Mr. Ruby Lazarus, both deserving of distinction for their incredible generosity and dedication to Torah growth in the Monsey community.

BAIS DOVID Reb Refael Eisenberg was an ehrliche Yid who sat and learned on his farm at 22 West Maple Avenue. He was not satisfied with the chinuch options in town. He wanted his children to learn in Yiddish, as they had in Europe. His view of chinuch was routed in an uncompromising adherence to mesorah in all ways. He therefore hired expert mechanchim who would homeschool his boys — Reb Mordechai Schwab, later mashgiach of Bais Shraga, and Reb Meir Mintz — illustrious talmidim of the Mirrer Yeshivah in Lithuania.

Soon thereafter, serious bnei Torah, such as Reb Yisrael Zev Hershkowitz, Reb Yakov Michael and Reb Aron Jacobs, asked if their children could join.

A short time later, Reb Refael moved to Eretz Yisroel. The families that had joined this “cheder” rented the farm property so the scant number of children could continue to learn there. At this point, in 1963, they hired another melamed, Reb Yeshaya Dovid Bayer, a pioneer of chinuch in Monsey, to become the menahel of their brand-new mosed — Bais Dovid.

Another project of Reb Refael Eisenberg was Bais Rochel, the sister school of Bais Dovid. Interestingly, the same energetic group of yungerleit who served as founders of Bais Dovid also launched the new girls school. The legendary dean of Bais Rochel, Reb Yankel Rosenbaum, a Gerrer chassid and Bais Medrash Elyon talmid, cultivated it into the large school that it is today.

Some of the prime gedolei yisroel and Bais Medrash Elyon talmidim who sent their children to Bais Dovid and Bais Rochel are old Monsey names, such as Reb Shmelke Taubenfeld, Reb Avraham Weinfeld, Reb Chaim Flohr, Reb Lazer Lauer and Reb Shabsi Wigder.

WITH THE YEARS, new mosdos opened, giving expression to various shades and shitos in chinuch. Some were established to cater to specific crowds, and others to accommodate specific approaches in learning.

Other batei chinuch that were established by Bais Medrash Elyon talmidim are Reb Shimon Rosengarten’s Bais Mikroh, and Reb Shmuel Mendelowitz’s and Reb Shea Schiff’s Bais Shraga. In 1964, when the Viznitz Rebbe moved to Monsey, a chassidish mehalech in chinuch joined the scene.

Today, there are tens of mosdos hachinuch educating the multiplying number of children in Monsey, each focused on building a strong foundation of avodas Hashem for the future builders of Klal Yisroel.

The very first cheder in Monsey,

YESHIVA OF SPRING VALLEY, WAS ESTABLISHED IN 1943 Today the boys school has 27 classes. Their first menahel was Rabbi Dov Greenbaum.

Over in Skver, Yeshivas Avir Yaakov was opened in 1956. Today, their cheder has 61 classes and their mosed’s bus fleet amounts to 25. There are a total of 95 routes for the boys throughout the day, the first of which starts at 6:30 a.m., and the last of which ends at 10:30 in the evening.

Bais Dovid was established by Rabbi Refael Eisenberg in 1963. They currently have 35 classes. Their fleet of 10 buses makes a total of

23 routes each morning, and many more each afternoon. The first route starts at 6:45 a.m., and the last student is dropped off at home at 6:40 p.m.

Shortly thereafter, in 1964, the year the Viznitz Rebbe, zt”l, relocated to Monsey, Meor Hachaim Viznitz was established. Today their cheder, which is comprised of three separate buildings, has a total of 59 classes — 27 in Binyan Vilchovitz, and 32 betwen the two Elyon Road buildings.

They have a fleet of 32 buses,

most of which get parked on their parking lot on Ashel Lane.

The next talmud Torah to open was Satmar, established in 1975. They currently have 46 classes, which are housed in two buildings, one on South Madison Avenue, and the other on Viola Road. Their fleet of 25 buses gets parked in the parking lot of their girls school on South Main Street. There are a total of 29 routes in the morning and 29 routes in the afternoon that transport their boys to and from cheder.

Yeshiva Bais Mikroh was

established in 1976

by Rabbi Rosengarten on corner Saddle River Road and Maple Avenue.

Today they have 29 classes.

In 1978, Machzikei Hadas of Belz entered the Monsey cheder scene.

They currently have 22 classes.

Their 6 buses have 12 boys routes each morning and 13 each afternoon. The first pickup is at 6:45 a.m. and the last drop-off at 6:20 p.m.

The next cheder to be established in Monsey was Degel Hatorah, which opened its doors in 1985.

They currently have 10 classes.

The first student is picked up at approximately 6:50 a.m., and the last class is dismissed at 6:00 p.m.

Established in 1988, Adas Yereim Vien was the next cheder to open in Monsey. Today they have 11 classes. Their 4 buses make a total of 12 routes each morning and afternoon. The first route starts at 7:00 a.m., and the last route is over by 6:00 p.m.

Tzon Yosef Pupa opened its doors in 1989. Their mosed currently has 18 buses, which makes 34 routes per day for the boys alone. The first route starts at 6:30 a.m., and the last route is over by 10:30 p.m.

Tashbar Nachlas Chaim m’Ribnitz was established in 1995. They currently have 22 classes and 6 buses that shuttle their boys to and from cheder. They have a total of 12 routes in the morning, 15 routes in the afternoon, and 3 routes that take the boys to night seder each evening.

Ohr Reuven opened their yeshivah ketanah for elementary and preschool boys in 1995. They currently have 10 classes.

Cheder Chabad was next to open, in 1999. They currently have 9 boys elementary classes, as well as 5 in the preschool division.

Bobov Monsey was established in 1999. They currently have 16 classes. Their mosed has 10 buses that make a total of 10 routes in the morning and 10 in the afternoon for the talmud Torah alone. The first route starts at 6:45 a.m., and the last boy is dropped off at 6:25 p.m.

The Sanz-Klausenburg cheder was established in 2001. They currently have 11 classes. Their mosed has 8 buses, which shuttle students to and from cheder between

6:40 a.m. and 6:30 p.m.

Next to open was Noam Elimelech Lizensk, in 2002. Their cheder has 11 classes. Their 4 buses make a total of 25 routes between 6:00 a.m. and 9:10 p.m.

In 2007, Bnei Tzion d’Bobov opened its doors. Currently, they have 11 classes and 4 buses that transport the boys to and from cheder in 3 rounds of routes both in the morning and the afternoon, which run from 6:45 a.m. until 6:15 p.m.

Skver opened their

SECOND CHEDER IN 2007,

this one in Monsey. They currently have 18 classes. Their 5 buses make a total of 31 routes throughout the day, beginning at 7:00 a.m., and finishing the last route at 6:30 p.m.

In 2008, Imrei Shufer joined the Monsey cheder scene. Today they have 11 classes. While they also use transportation from the school district, they have 2 of their own buses. Together, 3 routes are made in the morning and 3 in the afternoon.

Tiferes Banim of Munkatch also opened in 2008. They currently have 11 classes. They outsource transportation, with 20 routes running from 6:30 a.m. until 6:30 p.m.

Yeshiva of Greater Monsey was established in 2010. They currently have 15 classes.

Divrei Chona Kolashitz was established in 2011. They have 6 classes to date. Their 3 buses make a total of 7 routes throughout the day. The first route brings the older kids to cheder in time for their starting time at 8:30 a.m., and the last route leaves the cheder at 5:00 p.m.

In that same year, 2011, Ohr Yochanan Rachmistrivka was opened. Today, they have 14 classes. They have 4 buses that run a total of 9 morning routes and 10 afternoon routes. The first bus starts out at 6:00 a.m.,and the last route winds down at 6:45 p.m.

Satmar opened in 2012. They currently have 30 classes. Their fleet of 15 buses makes 15 boys routes each morning, of which the first leaves at 6:45 a.m., and 22 in the afternoon. One of the providers of student transportation to the farthest areas,

their buses travel within a 7-mile radius, going as far as New City and Suffern, and all locations between the two.

Darkei Avos Sanz was also established in 2012. They currently have 7 classes.

Their 3 buses make a total of 6 routes each morning. The first bus starts at 8:00 a.m., and the last boy is dropped off at home at 5:30 p.m.

Cheder Be’er Yeshaya opened in 2017. They currently have 10 classes.

Yeshuas Moshe Viznitz is another cheder that was established in 2012. They currently have 8 classes. Their 3 buses make 12 routes throughout the day, starting at 8:15 a.m., and the last child gets dropped off at 6:15 p.m.

In 2017 Imrei Binah opened its doors. They currently have 4 classes.

They have 2 buses and 1 van, with 4 routes in the morning and 3 in the afternoon.

According to a cheder established less than seven years ago,

43% of their student body is comprised of students who have recently moved to Monsey.
