DIFFERENT MOSDOS, DIFFERENT NUMBERS (Re: When the Money Man Comes Knocking, Issue 204) As always, each of your feature articles on Monsey mosdos was a great read and beautifully written. But as an avid Monsey View reader who has sent five kids to Monsey yeshivos, it was clear that much of the information here was applicable only to our community’s chassidishe yeshivos. A case in point would be this statement in the tuition article: “Each child costs the school or cheder between $600 to $800 a month to educate and care for. And yet, almost nobody in the heimishe school system pays that much tuition for their child.” Tuition of $600 to $800 per month? It has been five years since my youngest graduated elementary school, and that number range is still far less than what we actually paid for any of our children. Almost nobody pays the full $600 to $800 tuition charged by the school? Again, I have to respectfully disagree. I know many parents who pay full tuition, often shopping the sale racks and cutting other corners to do so. And in schools where s’char limud can be $10,000 or more per year, per child, even those who are getting a break are probably still paying more than $600 to $800 per month, per child. Not once have I ever had a yeshivah bill me extra for textbooks for any of my children. While obviously the school district wasn’t going to be covering the cost of my kids’ seforim, all of their general studies workbooks and textbooks were supplied by the school district. I also have zero recollection of any girls’ school insisting that tuition be paid over 12 months, instead of 10. Monsey is, baruch Hashem, a very large and a very diverse community, and the high caliber of The Monsey View draws readers from all of them. The feature articles on yeshivos offered fascinating insight into many of our mosdos, but it should be noted that many of the topics discussed can vary greatly from school to school.

A DANGER, NOT A COURTESY (Re: Of Buses and Book Money, Issue 204) I am writing about the wonderful bus article that you published last week. I have been a bus driver in the ERSCD for 17 years and would like to mention one important point you did not cover. Giving unauthorized stops is dangerous and opens up the driver to liability. Insurance will cover a child getting hurt when getting on or off the bus at their official stop, and not at unauthorized stops. By the time school starts in September, parents are already aware of the issues at home that would prevent them from taking their child to his or her designated bus stop, whether the difficulties arise due to children or infants who can’t be left at home, or streets where it’s not possible for children to walk to the corner. Arrangements can be made before the school year starts to make it easier for kids to get to their buses. Putting the issues on the head of the driver once the year has started is not fair. While these issues can often be worked out, don’t wait until the driver pulls up on the first day of school to deal with the problems. There is also a second issue with unauthorized/ courtesy stops: I often cover other drivers’ runs when something comes up and my schools are closed. I often will drive by children waiting inside their houses or at their driveways simply because the driver gave courtesy stops. Please do not tip your driver for giving house stops. If you’re going to tip them, tip them for doing a good job. A Bus Driver
THE MISSING PIECE (Re: The Cornerstone of Chinuch in Monsey, Issue 204) After reading about the founding of the early Monsey yeshivos, I wanted to add some information that was omitted. ASHAR, then known as HiRock (Hebrew Institute of Rockland County) was founded in 1956 and was located at 70 Highview Road. Simcha Wachsman
RE: PENALTY FOR PAYING PUNCTUALLY? (Inbox, Issue 205) I’m writing in reply to the letter-writer who wrote that she knows some parents who learned “how to play the tuition game,” encouraging the idea of not paying one’s balance in full, and just “throwing a bone” to the school with a token payment… I want to bring out that this is quite possibly gezel. There is no “game” to be played; this is real life, Yiddishkeit in action. There is a

din v’cheshbon. I also want to share something interesting I heard recently. There is a school in Lakewood that circumvents the costs of fundraising (hall rental, printing, salary of fundraiser, etc.), by putting the burden of fundraising on the parents themselves! They are required to give a credit card or head checks at the beginning of the year, and if they can’t cover full tuition, well, it’s their job to go knocking on doors… Just a reminder to thank our yeshivos for the hard work they invest in helping us out with tuition! B.F.
BE GRATEFUL FOR YOUR CHINUCH (Re: Chinuch Letters, Inbox, Issue 205) As I read through the letters complaining about our school system, I wonder why people aren’t thankful for what they do have. As a special needs teen, I know many people who have kids in our local public schools, and they would have really wanted to send them to a Yiddishe school, yet the tuition would be high because of the need for individual education. Shouldn’t people be more thankful that their children attend Yiddishe schools? May Hashem bless all of Klal Yisroel with lots nachas from their children. A Monsey Teen

Chukas By: Malka Schneps
Pessie was jumping rope outside when Rochel informed her that her father was calling. Pessie dropped the jump-rope and ran toward home, calling back over her shoulder, “I’ll come back as soon as I can!” Pessie raced into the house. Her father thanked her for coming in so quickly, and asked her to drop off a bag at a neighbor’s house. Pessie ran to the neighbor, returning a few moments later. Her father thanked her profusely. Then Pessie’s father added further praise. “Not only did you help me, but you also showed me how much you love me and respect me,” he told her. “How did I do that?” wondered Pessie. “Tell me, why did you come running home?” her father asked. “I came because you called me,” answered Pessie. “And why did you run to the neighbor’s house with a bag?” he added. “Because you asked me to,” stated Pessie. “You see, Pessie, you came running home and then you ran to do an errand for me, all without ever asking for the reason,” he explained. “You never asked what was in the bag, or why it had to be done now, or even why you had to do it and not someone else. That means you did it because I asked you to, and not because you decided it made sense to do it.” This week’s parsha begins, “Zos chukas haTorah… — These are the
84 / THE MONSEY VIEW
statutes of the Torah…” (Bamidbar 19:2). The Torah then expounds the laws of the Parah Adumah. The Ohr HaChaim Hakadosh asks why the Torah uses the words “zos chukas haTorah” as opposed to “zos chukas hataharah” or “zos chukas hatumah,” since what follows is the specific law of becoming tahor through the Parah Adumah, not laws relating to the entire Torah. The Ohr HaChaim answers that when we perform a mitzvah that we do not understand, Hashem regards it as if we have kept the entire Torah. By fulfilling a command that does not make sense to us, we demonstrate that our motivation in performing all of the mitzvos is not that they make sense to us, but that Hashem commanded us to do so — otherwise we would be obeying our intellect, not Hashem. In Sichos Mussar (Chukas, Maamer 78), R’ Chaim Shmuelevitz, zt”l, notes that if a person does a mitzvah where the reason for the mitzvah is known, it is not clear whether the person is doing the mitzvah because he understands why he should do the mitzvah, or whether he is doing the mitzvah purely because Hashem commanded him to do so. If, however, that person does a mitzvah that he does not understand at all, it demonstrates that he is doing so because Hashem commanded it. The mitzvah of Parah Adumah is a chok for which no logical reason is given. Shlomo Hamelech understood the reason for every mitzvah except the mitzvah of Parah Adumah (Bamidbar Rabbah 19:3). Just as Hashem grants understanding,
perhaps Hashem withheld the reason behind Parah Adumah so that Shlomo Hemelech could do this mitzvah with no understanding — purely because Hashem had commanded him in the mitzvos. The Sfas Emes (second ma’amar on Chukas 5631) adds that submitting ourselves to Hashem and fulfilling the mitzvos regardless of our understanding or lack of understanding brings us to have yiras Shamayim. The Sfas Emes notes that a person may have a favorable judgment on the Yom Hadin, but without yiras Shamayim it is not enough. Chazal compare yiras Shamayim to a preservative used in wheat. Just as wheat will spoil without the addition of a preservative, so will our mitzvos not endure without yiras Shamayim. By choosing to fulfill mitzvos even when we do not understand them, we demonstrate that our true motive is to serve Hashem, and doing so brings us to have yiras Shamayim. In the story above, Pessie fulfilled her father’s wishes without asking why, and he rightly concluded that she had love and respect for him. When we carry out Hashem’s commandments simply because Hashem commanded us, we show our love and respect for Hashem, and we develop yiras Shamayim. The next time we are faced with a mitzvah that seems to make no sense to us, we can feel joyous at the opportunity we have been granted, and show Hashem that the reason we answer His call is simply because He asked.

Yoely Fried stuck his hand out to the hitching position, hoping for a ride. On this particular morning, he had yahrtzeit for his father, and getting to shul on time was of utmost importance. Relying on others to get him places had long been his mode of transportation, and it usually worked. As he stood there waiting, a noisy Ford Mustang appeared in the distance. Yoely now had a decision to make. Should he keep his hand extended, or should he pull it back? In the end it didn’t matter, as the car roared right by him. Shortly thereafter, a taxi began to slow down. Quickly glancing at his watch, Yoely knew he still had some time, and promptly waved him off. During the next ten minutes, a few people stopped, but they were all heading in a direction different from where Yoely needed to go. He was getting frustrated, as his chances for the amud seemed to dwindle away. He began to think of his father and how disappointing it would be to let him down. Guilt and self-pity were now his only companions as the hitching prospects grew fewer and farther apart. Yoely did make it to shul on time that day, yet his harried look told all. Immediately after davening, a close friend pulled him aside, inquiring
whether everything was all right. “Baruch Hashem, things are fine,” Yoely said. “It’s just that hitching has me beat; it’s time I learned to drive. Do you know of a good driving school?” Standing nearby was Meshulem Gross, who overheard the two men talking. Having recently passed the road test, he introduced himself and shared his experience. “There are many good schools in town, but only one is really great, and that’s Drive With Akiva driving school. Akiva really understands your struggles and builds you up. His instructions are clear and concise, and his parking technique is very straightforward. He remains calm in the most difficult driving situations, and there’s just something very serene about him. You can settle for good, or you can go with great.” Yoely was convinced. He began his journey the next day with Akiva at his side. Getting behind the wheel for the first
THE MONSEY VIEW / 91
time was quite scary, but the debacle of the day before left him with no doubts: He had to get his driver’s license. With that thought in mind, and with some prodding from his instructor, Yoely set the car in motion and merged nicely into the lane. Akiva explained that to stay in the lane,
Guilt and self-pity were now his only companions as the hitching prospects grew fewer and farther apart.
Yoely needed to “aim high,” and that after making a turn, he was supposed to turn the wheel back himself, and not let it turn back by itself. All went well for the first eight minutes. The drive was smooth and the turns were flawless, but that didn’t fool Akiva because he knew from experience that challenges were still to come. Lane changing, intersections and highways all still needed to be mastered, and there was always the unexpected to look out for. Just then, Yoely noticed something small darting across the road. As he came closer, Yoely slammed on the brakes. It was a squirrel! Akiva quickly called a timeout and calmly asked his student to pull over to the side of the road. The savvy instructor went on to explain that stopping abruptly while driving is extremely dangerous and should be avoided. Yoely nodded, and the lesson continued.
92 / THE MONSEY VIEW
When it came to parallel parking, Akiva taught Yoely the “gear then steer” concept — which is to make sure the gear is set before turning the wheel. Yoely went on and aced the parallel parking. His confidence then began to soar and he got the feeling that he belonged on the road. Later on, a car zoomed up from behind and cut them off. Sensing this might upset his student, Akiva simply said, “Let him just be,” and the tension was quickly diffused. As the lesson began to wind down, Yoely asked to be dropped off at his shul, as he hadn’t davened Mincha yet. When Yoely exited the car, he saw Meshulem, whom he had met the day before. Yoely went on to tell Meshulem how right he was on every single point about Akiva. His instructions were indeed very clear, he never lost his cool, and yes — he was a very calm teacher. Meshulem thanked Yoely for reporting back to him and reminded Yoely that if he wanted to succeed and get his license, he would have to continue to practice and see it through. Yoely reassured him he would, as the pain of hitching was still very fresh in his mind. With that, Yoely took leave of his new friend and headed off to shul.

Hoping to Prevent Tragedies, Chaverim Distributes Free Car Magnets They look like simple magnets, but those white octagons with red rims that have been popping up on many a Monsey-area car are potential lifesavers. Every year we hear about tragedies of children who do not survive after being left in cars during warm weather, when a car's interior temperature can rise to deadly levels in a relatively short amount of time. Chaverim of Rockland coordinator Yossi Margaretten said that his office has recently received more than a few calls from concerned Monsey residents after they spotted children who had been left behind in parked cars while their parents ran into a store. “People leave their baby behind with 12- and 14-year-olds, cracking the window open a little for fresh air, but it's not the right way,” Margaretten told The Monsey View. “People need to know that this isn't a joke.” Temperatures don’t have to be in
the nineties or above for a parked car to become a dangerous place for a small child. A Lakewood toddler died in early May after being left unattended in a car for approximately two and a half hours. The Asbury Park Press reported that temperatures were only in the 70-degree range when that tragedy occurred. Margaretten acknowledged that while some parents intentionally leave their children behind for a short time while they shop, there have also been instances of parents simply forgetting that there is a child in the backseat. Hoping to prevent both problems, Chaverim has collaborated with Print It and Quality Air Heating and Cooling, printing car magnets bearing the words “Never leave a child alone in a car, not even for one minute.” Approximately half of the 10,000 magnets printed have already been distributed, and Margaretten said that the campaign has been receiv-
ing positive feedback. “We have had people telling us that they had parked their cars and had almost forgotten that their baby was sleeping in the back seat until they saw the magnets,” said Margaretten. Car magnets are available from Chaverim at no charge. Call the Chaverim office at 371-6334 to arrange pickup.
Two Safely Evacuated and One Firefighter Injured as Fire Destroys Monsey Home It took seven fire crews over an hour to extinguish a fire that broke out in a Maple Leaf Road home last week, destroying the high ranch and sending a firefighter suffering from heat exhaustion to the hospital. The Ramapo Police Department said that the fire broke out at approximately 3:00 p.m. Units from the Spring Valley, Hillcrest, Tallman, Suffern, Hillburn and Brewster fire departments responded to the blaze, fighting hot and humid conditions as they battled the flames. The fire broke out in a second-

floor apartment of the house, which was undergoing an expansion, reported the Ramapo Daily Voice. The two people who were in the home when the flames erupted were both able to get out safely. Hatzoloh, Spring Hill Ambulance Corps and Chaverim of Rockland were all on scene providing support. Both the Rockland County Sheriff's Office BCI Unit and the Ramapo Police Department were called in to investigate the cause of the fire, which has yet to be determined.

C H A P T E R T W E LV E Recap: The Potolskys and Stockhammers agree to push up their children’s wedding, and a significant amount of money for wedding expenses is transferred from Korman’s account into theirs, with the Potolskys receiving triple as much as their mechutanim. In Bratislava, 1948, Emil Bern, posing as a gardener but secretly working for the Jewish Children Rescue organization, is offered a job as a supervisor for the children at the Lucius Jan orphanage — a perfect set-up for obtaining information about any Jewish children possibly hiding there. As Elisheva was cajoling Shuki Rosen to finish his bottle, Miri appeared at her side. “Miri!” Elisheva exclaimed. “What a surprise! What are you doing here? Where is Shmueli?” “I left him with my neighbor. I just needed to come and talk to you face to face.” “What?” Elisheva looked piercingly at her daughter. “Why? Did something happen?” “That’s what I came to ask you, Mommy.” Her oldest smiled sheepishly as she sat down on a nearby chair. “Please, just tell me the truth, okay?” “What truth?” “Is everything okay at home?” “At home?” “You know, with Tzippy, with you, with Tatty, with the rest of the kids...” “Baruch Hashem, everything is absolutely fine.” Elisheva put the now-empty bottle down on the table, picked up Shuki, and lay his head down on her shoulder. “Totally fine. And I have a few interesting things to tell you, but I just haven’t gotten around to it yet.” She smiled again. “I saw that you tried reaching me yesterday, but we got home late and it was just so hectic. You know how the house looks in the evening, especially when I
come home after being out for a few hours...” “I know,” Miri replied quietly. After a pause she asked, “You… were you… offended by my gift to Tzippy or something? Was something not right about me calling her up and taking her out to a sale without asking you?” “What? Of course not! Tzippy was so happy, and it was so very nice of you.” Elisheva stood up with Shuki in her arms. “The linen that you bought looks like it’s very good quality, and the towels are beautiful.” “So what happened?” Miri leaned back in the chair a bit just as Gitty walked in with a stack of diapers in her arms. She greeted Miri cheerfully and began arranging the stack on the shelf. “Because when Tzippy came back it was very late, and I didn’t want to call, but I thought...” She looked really miserable. “I thought that you would call me.” “I really should have.” Now it was Elisheva’s turn to look sheepish. She felt even more uncomfortable than her daughter — both because Miri was right about expecting some warm words of appreciation for her gesture, and also because Gitty was standing right there and surely listening very attentively. “But that evening Tatty and I had to sit down

and have a serious talk with Tzippy about something, and when we finished it was even later than late.” “I see,” Miri said slowly. “Tzippy told me that she thinks there’s something going on...” Elisheva turned around to her daughter, who fell silent, getting the message from her mother’s eyes. Shuki fell asleep on Elisheva’s shoulder, and she carefully transferred him to a crib. “That’s how it is; it’s just a really busy time right now, baruch Hashem.” She went from crib to crib, checking on each of the babies. “Have you really forgotten what I was like before your wedding?” She laughed, and Miri joined her. So did Gitty. “Oh, my, it’s late!” Miri stood up quickly, and Elisheva noticed that she was not quite reassured. Of course, she hadn’t gotten satisfactory explanations for her very justified questions, but she would get them soon. “I’ll walk you back. Gitty, can you keep an eye on my group for five minutes?” “Sure, sure,” her colleague replied amenably. “Then you didn’t answer my calls all day,” Miri continued as they walked to the door, as though there hadn’t been a gap in their conversation. “And in the afternoon Devoiry said you were resting, and then when I called back, you weren’t home, and no one knew where you had gone with Tzippy. You didn’t answer your cell phone even when I kept trying...” Her voice faded out uncertainly. “I want you to come over tonight,” Elisheva said by way of a reply. She would have to manage to find some time to talk to Miri. She would go out with Tzippy early, first to Sternbuch’s bridal salon to look at gowns, then to her father at the nursing home — which she hoped to get to in time for supper — and then to the Kurzmann real estate agency, and after that, maybe even to two home-based stores. That would be enough for one day. “Come for supper with Yaakov. But late, like eleven, okay? I’ll tell you about everything that’s going on. It’s not such a long story, but it’s incredible — and so full of siyata d’Shmaya.” REB MENACHEM Auerbach’s gemach officially closed each evening at ten, but he only managed to get home after eleven. Drained, he sat at the table and ate supper, leafing through his two blue notebooks and listening with half an ear to his wife and daughter talking. Rivka placed some more squash quiche and carrots before him and sat down. She sat in silence for several long moments, until he raised his eyes. “Everything is delicious,” he said, pushing the notebooks to the side. “Thanks,” she said, but did not smile. “Avigail, do you want to eat something?” “No, thanks. After all that running around, I don’t have much of an appetite,” she said, and left

the room. “Look, Menachem.” Rivka sighed. “You know that I don’t usually get involved in the affairs of your gemach, and I trust you 100 percent. But you also know that I have a good sense of intuition, right?” He nodded. She had his full attention now. “I’m the one who told you that Potolsky from Rabi Akiva Street is fine, before they came to ask for a loan for their oldest daughter’s wedding, a year and a half ago.” “And three weeks ago he came again, for the daughter who is in Avigail’s class,” he noted. “Right, she got engaged two days after Avigail, and I think they’re getting married around the same time, middle of Shevat or so. Before yamim tovim I met the mother, and we were schmoozing. She started working recently, after being a stay-athome mother for many years.” “Right.” Menachem fought the instinct to open one of his notebooks. He knew that his wife could not stand his obsessive need to have his lists open in front of him at almost all times. “They are serious people, and they try very hard to make their payments on time.” “They do?” “Yes,” he answered. “Why?” “So, it’s like this...” She groped around for the right words. “When I was with Avigail this evening at her gown fitting, we met them there, Tzippy Potolsky and her mother. And… they were going for a top-of-the-line gown, nothing less.” “Really?” “Yes. Not that they were purposely looking for that standard, but they didn’t even react when the owner told them that one of the gowns they were interested in is a very expensive piece.” “Like we did,” Avigail said from the door. “Avigail?” her father chided, the rebuke evident in his voice. “I think that it’s l’toeles, Tatty. And I wasn’t eavesdropping on purpose.” His daughter walked into the kitchen. “I just want you to understand the situation. Tzippy really gets by with very little, but she has good taste, and somehow, even with her family’s limited means, she manages to look very good.” She pulled over a chair. “So what are you trying to say?” He opened the notebook. “That they have money, and they’re just taking loans from the gemach for no reason? That they don’t have money, and they are wasting the gemach money and won’t repay the loan? Tell me — what?” “All I want to say is that something strange is going on here,” his wife said quietly. “I don’t think that with all of Tzippy’s good taste, Mrs. Potolsky would let her take a dress at such an exorbitant price if she couldn’t afford to pay for it. I know her; she is someone who, with a lot of good sense, is able to man-

age her house very well on an extremely tight budget. I already told you that when I recommended that you approve their loan.” “Nu, so what?” Women! They talked so much. What did they want from him if there didn’t seem to be any danger to the loan? “Maybe,” he had a sudden idea, “maybe the chasan’s mother is paying for the dress, and she gave the kallah a big budget!” “Maybe,” Rivka said doubtfully. “But I don’t think so, because their mechutanim are the Stockhammers from Petach Tikvah. They are also mechutanim with Brander from Har Nof, and I don’t think that they have enough money to enable their kallah to rent the latest, most expensive gown at the store.” Menachem perused the P page. Potolsky. A year and a half ago, Rabbi Potolsky had taken a loan, and he had returned it in four payments, on time. Three weeks ago, he’d come to take another loan, and had received one for a period of twenty months. The guarantors were Betzalel Cohen and Gad Sklar. Everything seemed to be fine with the whole thing. “There’s something else that I just remembered,” Avigail interjected suddenly, looking very worried. Her parents looked at her. “Tzippy told me that after the gown place they were going to her grandfather in the nursing home, and from there to Kurzmann’s real estate agency.” “Kurzmann?” Menachem stared at the notebook again, and then raised his eyes to his daughter. “Kurzmann? What, for an apartment?” “Why else does someone go to a real estate agency?” his wife asked logically. “Do their listings include apartments in places besides

Bnei Brak?” “I don’t think so, but it does include apartments in Pardes Katz.” “Where did they buy an apartment for the older one?” “I don’t know, but certainly not in Bnei Brak — and not even in Pardes Katz. Yeruchem, or Dimona, or Metullah or Be’er Sheva...” His wife shook her head. “Today young couples go everywhere. Avigail, are you sure she said Kurzmann?” “Yes,” Avigail said. Despite her earlier declaration about her lack of appetite, she sliced a big piece of quiche for herself. “Kurzmann is considered quite a high-standard agent,” Rivka remarked. “I’m sure they have all kinds of apartments, in a wide price range.” “Yes, starting at four million shekel and going down as low as a million.” “I’m sure there are some for less.” “Eight hundred thousand?” Menachem suddenly recovered. “I hereby close this discussion,” he announced. “The Potolsky family has met all of their payments and complied with all of our rules, and as far as I’m concerned, they can buy their daughter an apartment on the moon, as long as they make their payments on time.” “That’s it; if they invest in an apartment on the moon, they won’t repay on time, because the chances are they won’t repay at all,” his wife predicted. He knitted his eyebrows, and they remained that way until he went to sleep — and even afterward. To be continued...

“Would it be so bad for him to learn a trade?” Hirsch Leib could barely swallow the gasp that threatened to escape from behind the safety of his lips. “Would it be so terrible if he became a merchant, able to support himself and his family?” The question posed by Hirsch Leib’s father hung heavy in the air. From behind the banister where he was hidden, Hirsch Leib watched his mother wringing her hands in despair, biting back tears. He knew this discussion was causing her pain. It hurt him, as well. The product of two lines of rabbinic families,
Hirsch Leib had been expected to make something of himself in the world of Torah. But time and again he’d proven himself a weak student. And now it came down to this. “I’ve spoken to his melamed,” Father continued with a sigh. “He’s made little progress; his head just isn’t there… It seems that he’s not cut out for learning.” Stoically, Father held the depth of his own emotions in check, for
the sake of his wife — though the pain cut through him deeply. “...There’s a shoemaker who is looking for an apprentice…” Mother stifled a sob, nodding her head while dabbing at her eyes. She understood, because really, what other choice was there? For a Yid in poverty-stricken Lithuania, there weren’t many options when it came to putting bread on the table. Only a select few were fortunate to continue in learning, their meals and housing provided by mechutanim who considered it a privilege to support their sons-inlaw. The rest? They worked for their bread. “He’ll serve Hashem from behind the counter. That also is an avodah,” Father continued. “His scales will be honest; he’ll do business as an erlicher Yid. What more can we expect from him?” Hirsch Leib imagined himself as a cobbler, pounding nails into leather, forming shoes to fit other people’s feet. “Father, please!” Hirsch Leib burst from his hiding place. “Give me one more chance! Father, I’ll prove to you that I can learn. I’ll change. I will! Please, Father!” Shocked by the sudden entrance of their son, Mother and Father looked at each other in silence. “Please, Father, please!” Hirsch Leib was groveling now. “Give me one more year of learning. I’ll show
you that I can be a talmid chacham!” With tears in his eyes, Father nodded his head, and Mother smiled while wiping her face. One more year it would be. Would Hirsch Leib manage to make something of himself? THE TABLE was laden with food, prepared for a festive meal in which Hashem would be thanked for all of His acts of kindness. Around the table sat the beloved friends, relatives and talmidim of the now-grown Hirsh Leib. When everyone was silent, he related the tale above, ending with this: “After 120 years, I’d have gone up to the Beis Din Shel Maaleh, and I would have been asked what I had to show for myself. I’d pull out shoes — good shoes, strong shoes, beautiful shoes… But shoes! “And then I’d be asked, ‘But what about the sefer, HaEmek Shailah? What about the yeshivah? What about the talmidim you could have made?’ “And what would I have been able to answer? For eternity I would live with the shame of not having fulfilled my potential!” SOMETIMES, a child who seems destined for an ordinary life can have a world of potential lying inside him. Who better than the Netziv — Rosh Yeshivah of the Yeshivah of Volozhin, teacher of 10,000 talmidim and author of exceptional seforim — to teach us this lesson?
Note: Hirsch Leib was the Yiddish nickname of Rabbi Naftoli Tzvi Yehudah Berlin, the Netziv mi’Volozhin.

Homemade pizza is warm, hearty and comforting, whichever way you slice it. And, in this case, whichever way you spice it! Making pizza with the kids on those long summer days is what warm and fuzzy memories are made of, so let them in on the action! The following recipes were all made on a pizza stone. This is a piece of kitchen equipment you won’t regret investing in. It produces superior results in record time! If using a stone, make sure to preheat it for a half-hour at 500° and coat the stone with flour or cornmeal before placing the dough on it. If using a regular pan, bake at 400°s until golden-brown.

Ezekiel tortilla flats
I make lunch with these literally every day. They keep me full and are exceptionally versatile — working as wraps, quesadillas and even crunchy chips. Ever since I spoke about them some time back, they sell out really fast, so grab two while you’re at it!
2
The grocery is my second home. If I’m not home, I’m usually there. The aisles are my friends, and whenever I spot something new, I feel like I’m welcoming the product to the family. There are, however, some products that find themselves making their way into my cart again and again, either because they are innovative and save time, or because they fit into the criteria of my healthy-ish, clean-eating lifestyle. Read on, and see what to add to your shopping list.
Shneider’s grilled frozen veggies This product provides the taste of grilled veggies without the work. These veggies ultimately find themselves in those Ezekiel flats, mixed with melted cheese and garlic or pesto mayo. There are also grilled potatoes with rosemary from the same brand, which make the perfect side dish.

Unger’s potato kugel batter
Do you know how long I have been waiting for this to come to market? Since I try not to eat potatoes, but my kids do, potato kugel and latkes are something my kids missed, but now they don’t anymore! This is an amazing product. The kids love it, the results are delicious, and it is so, so, so easy to use: Open bottle. Pour in pan. Get kisses from the kids for making latkes when it’s not even Chanukah.
4
Tovah mixed peppers
Pepper steak used to be hard to make. It meant slicing up all those peppers, in red, green, orange and yellow... Now, it couldn’t be easier! I dump these into a foil pan, add club or minute steaks over them, make some kind of sauce mixture with whatever I can find, and bake low and slow until we have the most delicious peppery steak to eat for dinner! The same can be done with chicken, salmon or anything! Oh, and make matbucha in half the time!
6 5
Kosher Taste avocado halves
Avocados in my smoothies keep me full for very long. Their healthy fat fuels me, but I don’t always have ripe avocados on hand. These are a great alternative. I have not yet tried them as real guacamole.
7
Saladmate truffle mayo
I know this is nowhere near diet-conscious. But sometimes, just a little smear is all you need on something to make all the difference! I like eating clean, but when it comes to anything truffle, I’m in.
Pas Yisroel pizza crusts
I see these all the time when I stop people in the grocery for something I like to call “What’s in your cart,” and after seeing this product the first time, it found its way into mine as well. These are a lifesaver. Especially for when you forget to defrost frozen pizza dough in time. How would pulled beef or pastrami pizzas ever happen if not for these? Don’t forget a drizzle of number 7!

Lieber’s rice cakes with dark chocolate Amazing snack, amazing taste. I don’t feel guilty sending those with the kids to school. They love it, and these rice cakes are filling and well priced.

Bethel Creamery organic maple yogurt
Okay, I’m actually worried about sharing this one because as it is, they are always selling out. People really stock up on these. (I should know. People is me.) But Bethel Creamery organic maple yogurt is literally a treat. It is creamy, filling and decadent! It is my go-to when I don’t have time to eat a meal — I grab this when I’m on the run or working (it’s a good thing there are spoons at the cutlery station in the grocery), and I’m good to go!

Heaven & Earth zoodles and other veggies
I’ll be honest. Zoodles never cut it for me. I was never able to tell myself, “Oooh, let’s make believe we are eating pasta, only it’s zucchini, but you’ll never ever know ‘cuz it looks like pasta, but unfortunately tastes just like zucchini for some reason.” Well, lucky for me, I got to try this product when I was on a strict diet that forbade real pasta. (If you are on an eating plan that allows real pasta, please contact me with the information — thanks!) This product did away with the whole process of washing, solemnly shredding, and sauteeing the skimpy strands of zucchini. It was now a process of open, dump, defrost, mix with sauce, and tadaaaa, ZASTA! (My name for zucchini pasta. And not ‘cuz when you eat it, it’s a dizasta.)
Riced cauliflower
Speaking of Heaven & Earth, let’s talk about their first product I got really excited about: riced cauliflower. And now they already have more varieties — like riced butternut squash (try it in your cholent — yum). I have used their riced veggies so many times now. I have made burger buns, pizza crusts, and soups with them. They are versatile, healthy and just amazing products that made healthy cooking and good eating a breeze!

Oxygen sauces These products are amazing and full of flavor. They are 100 percent natural, but I do wish they wouldn’t use sugar, and used honey or stevia instead. That would make these a total grand slam. But when I am in a rush, their sauces make for the most gourmet-tasting dishes. I used the fig and onion jam sauce for my roast on yom tov, and it was a hit! And then I spread the word. And they were sold out when I needed them. There you go!

Betterine baking sticks
My absolute favorite. I use these exclusively. Their roasted garlic marinara is amazing for anything from meatballs, to homemade eggplant pizzas, to lasagna, to anything. They have no added sugar, and are made from the most pure, natural ingredients — real quality products, that’s for sure! And you can definitely tell the difference. And so can my wallet, he-he.
This is the alternative to pareve baking without margarine fears. Made with coconut oil, this stick is all-natural and is my new friend in the kitchen. I add it to sauces for that delicious buttery feel, slather it on corn on the cob, and bake pareve cakes with it. It’s a truly revolutionary product!
I hope you enjoyed hearing about one foodie’s top grocery finds. These are currently my faves, but who knows what’s coming out in the near future? I definitely can’t wait to find out! Make sure to follow my adventures @evergreenkosher!

I had it perfectly planned, my morning tasks neatly lined up. Baby was going to nap at 10:30, just like he did at the babysitter on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. Then, before anything, I’d wrap up the grocery list and call in my phone order well before the 1:00 p.m. deadline. Because it was a Thursday and the weekly Shabbos order had to be in my house before the evening, or else. But then tasks wormed their way in, all pressing and non-negotiable (the downside to working from
home). Nothing out of the ordinary, but everything out of my carefully planned schedule. Oh, and baby was happily awake, grabbing at my pen, my keyboard, my mouse, my papers and stealing my brain with his impish smile. Out we went, the stroller, my mini dictator and I — in hopes that the spring air would lull him to sleep. After a sun-dappled hour, it eventually did. And I had 45 minutes left to race to meet the grocer’s deadline. It was not meant to be. By the time I cleared another must-do out of the way, had the list sorted and done, and actually reached my husband for the credit card info, the clock read 1:02. And the delivery time for the order was now estimated for Friday. This was not an option. In two hours, my very lively boys would be home, and I could not — could not — make a grocery order of this size with their vivacious beings present. Not after I promised myself, after the most recent adventure, that I would not attempt the experience again for at least another year. I also could not — could not — wait for the night, because who would babysit? And besides, I was hoping to be elbow deep in vegetable
peels by then. I called customer service, and groveled and shamelessly begged that perhaps they could overlook this delay just this once. Just for me. But no, the System couldn’t. It was inflexible. Wouldn’t budge. I would have to budge. Tear my resolute decision into shreds. I had to make this work somehow. I had to take the bull by the horns and go to the grocery with my boys, complete the entire order — and get out intact. Hmmm. Perhaps I could pretend I don’t know who my boys are as they race around the freezer, roll on the floor, tickle random unsuspecting babies in carts and utter ridiculousness itself to adults who cross their path. Not that it would help me much, because anyone who has met us on their previous escapades would recognize them as mine (if you’ve watched a duo cartwheel near the freezer section in a local grocery, I mean you). Some things are just hard to forget. So maybe I would just have to don that sweet smile and nod and say, “Yes, I know. They’re very active... Yup, he loves to steer the cart from the bottom using his hands... Uh-huh, I’ll bathe him when I get home... Yes, they’re adorable! And a little cheeky. Rowdy too... I’m sorry they’re disturbing you. I’ll work on teaching them proper behavior... Yes, it’s past their bedtime; I started this order several hours ago...” And then I had a brainstorm. Quickly, I worked my way through the list, choosing simple objects and printing a picture of each. On the first paper went a bottle of milk and a big number 1. (My boys could not yet read, but they did know their numbers.) A container of yogurt was the second picture with a number 8. Various snack bags were then displayed on papers, each one with a number. By the time I was done I had a pile of about 20 papers, each with a picture of an item from my list and a number on it. “So here’s the thing,” I told my
July 10, 2019 / THE MONSEY VIEW / 133 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484
kids when I welcomed them home. “Guess who will be doing the shopping today — you will!” First I laid out two papers at a time, with them taking turns to choose first with each set. While they did so I explained to them how this little game would work. They took their time, contemplating which items they wanted to have the honor of “shopping,” and their excitement mounted. “When you turn to this paper, what will you bring?” I asked, making sure they knew just what to do. And with the item they’d bring to the cart, I explained, they’d bring along the paper they were done with. What should I tell you, it worked! These little ones did work a lot faster than I’d hoped, running around the store to finish their papers, so, no, I didn’t manage to finish my part of the list by the time they had finished theirs, and there was some action to contend with. And I also had to make do with different flavors, fat-content and companies than I’d prefered. Either that, or surreptitiously change an item when we got to the aisle. But for once, I came home from the grocery feeling accomplished and somewhat in control. And my boys? For days, they reveled in the pride of the products they had shopped. I still avoid doing large grocery orders with my kids, but if I ever will be stuck again, I’ll know that there’s a way to make it so much less stressful.

Games at the Grocer Lists, in picture or drawn form for younger kids and a written list for children who read, will occupy the children during a grocery run. However, here are some more ideas that can make grocery shopping even more exciting.
Guessing Game Skills needed: Understanding cost value As you purchase items, have children guess their cost and keep a record as to which child guessed the closest. At the end of the shopping trip, announce your winner.
From A to Z Skills needed: Writing Give kids an A–Z list (or alternatively an alef-beis list) with a blank line for each letter. As you make your way through the aisles, children fill in items that they spot starting with each letter, until the entire list is done. (Don’t be surprised if most items on the list have very high sugar content.) For a more challenging version, make children find the objects in alphabetical order.
Bingo on the Go Skills needed: Reading Draw a grid for each child, and write an item you are planning to buy into each square. Give each child a pen (or stickers) and have them cross off the items as you put them into the cart. You can award the Bingo winner by allowing them to choose a treat for the family, or a snack for the following day of school.
Color Code Skills needed: Counting, color recognition Each child chooses a color and tries to be the first one to spot 20 (or whichever number you choose) items of that color first. This game
can also be played with letters of the alphabet, as each child tries to find 20 items starting with a specific letter.
Treasure Hunt Skills needed: Reading Give each child a list of things to spot. This can include items in the grocery, employees doing certain things (a worker unpacking produce), an open-ended thing (something we ate for breakfast today) or an unusual sight (a woman wearing glasses around her neck). The one who spots all the things first, or spots the most things on the list, wins.
Race to the Register Skills needed: Reading or understanding some form of a list Give each child a list, distributing it in a fair manner in regard to age and abilities, and either give them an allotted amount of time to complete their list, or have contestants race and see who arrives at the appointed place with their items first.
Riddles and Hints Skills needed: Just comprehension Give children clues about the next item on your list and have them guess what it is. This can be really simple, such as naming the color or its use, or you can use some more sophisticated clues. The one who guesses first can help with bagging the item/ putting it into the cart — or independently bringing it to the wagon.

My grocery shopping usually looks one of two ways. The first way looks like this: Open and shut pantry, open and shut refrigerator, open and shut plastic goods drawer, and then create a list. This process works pretty well, most of the time, but it generally means I’ll forget the bananas, which have no designated spot in my kitchen (no, I do not own a fruit bowl). The second way looks very different, and usually follows a very busy morning that left no time to even write up the list. This kind of grocery shopping has me walking up and down the aisles, randomly dropping a wide variety of groceries into my wagon, and hoping that I’ll remember what I’m certain I forgot before I make my way to the cashier. That’s why I’m introducing a third method. And I’m pretty sure this one takes the cake, just because it works the other way around. This list brings the grocery aisles into your kitchen, so you no longer need to remember what you forgot — Oh, it was the aluminum foil! — before you leave the store. Happy shopping!

Teatown is a tranquil nature reserve, with 15 miles of well-groomed hiking trails of various difficulty levels crisscrossing its breadth, looping around lakes and ponds and yards of untouched nature. The trails are well shaded, with entire sections on swinging wooden bridges over swamps and lakes, adding an element of adventure to the hike. And the surroundings are peaceful and just beautiful. The Lakeside Loop — the moderate blue trail around Teatown Lake — seems to be a family-friendly favorite. It includes a long stretch on a wooden bridge, and this trail leads to Wildflower Island, a 2-acre preserve with over 230 species of wildflowers. A trail map with details of all 11 trails are available in the visitor center. Be aware that a part of the Twin Loops trail is currently closed. There’s also a Nature Center right off the main parking lot where children can view birds of prey, including a bald eagle, owls and hawks, as well as opossums and snakes, and water tanks with turtles and other amphibians. There’s also a gift shop with nature-inspired merchandise. Fun Fact: The name Teatown dates back to 1776, when tea was scarce due to British taxation. During that period, a man named John Arthur who’d moved to the area was hoarding a chest full of tea, wanting to sell it at a huge profit. There was a series of events until he finally agreed to sell it at a fair price, and the area became known as Teatown.

WORLD’S LEADING FOOD CHAINS The world’s largest retail food chain is 7-Eleven, which has approximately 46,000 locations! SPAR, the second largest chain, boasts 13,500 locations, and Walmart ranks third, with about 11, 088 operational branches.
GROCERY SHOPPING AROUND THE WORLD When choosing produce in Italy, keep your hands off the food until you pull on a pair of disposable gloves. At outdoor markets, however, customers can simply point out the desired items to the seller, and no gloves are necessary. It is also expected that shoppers weigh and label their own produce before proceeding to checkout.
While more convenient for the consumer, UK’s practice of covering fresh produce in plastic wrap, and individual heads of lettuce and broccoli in shrink wrap, is criticized by consumers and environmental groups.
Perhaps in line with their vast population, the world’s largest online grocery market exists in China.
In Germany, grocery stores are generally closed on Sundays. During the week, they lock up for the day as early as 8:00 p.m., with smaller towns’ supermarkets closing their stores even earlier.
150 / THE MONSEY VIEW / July 10, 2019 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484
BY THE NUMBER On average, we spend about 60 hours a year on grocery shopping. This is based on the average shopping trip taking 43 minutes, and the average family going to the supermarket 1.6 times per week.
With more than 38,000 groceries in the U.S. alone, and some offering more than 42,200 items, it’s no surprise that in 2018 supermarket sales reached upward of $701 billion! And 65 percent of that was spent at traditional groceries alone.
Among primary shoppers for multi-person households, 69 percent are women and 41 percent are men.
Is anyone you know shopping in a supermarket as you read this? On a typical day, 32 million Americans are shopping for groceries. This translates into 1 in every 7 adults being in the supermarket at any given time. Interestingly, while online shopping seems to be replacing retail stores, only 3 percent of consumers say they purchase groceries online.
GROCERY TIPS You may want to plan your supper menu earlier in the day, since studies show that the hour between 4 and 5 p.m. is the busiest time in supermarkets, as well as the most typical point in the day for hungry shoppers to add some unexpected goodies to their cart. In fact, just to show that shoppers purchase what they find appealing, 25 percent of the usual shopping budget is spent in the middle aisles of the store, where the processed treats and sugary sweets are displayed.
According to a study done on 85 random shopping carts, taking your sanitizing wipes to the grocery seems to be at least as important as your shopping list. Half of the carts examined carried E. coli, while coliform bacteria was found on almost three-quarters of the wagons inspected!
Many groceries have shopping baskets strategically “lying around throughout the store, so consumers who were planning to buy just a few items can easily grab one and purchase more items than originally intended. And whether it actually ever happens or not, studies show that doubling the size of shopping carts would result in purchases increasing by 40 percent!
