ONE NUMBER

(Re: Kitchen on the Go, Issue 207) First and foremost, I enjoy The Monsey View weekly from cover to cover. I pull out the recipes each week and store them in a binder. Thank you, and keep them coming, simple and delicious. The article on appliances to take along when traveling was very informative. I came back from New Hampshire this past week, and I’d taken along two pizza makers (one for milichigs and one for fleishigs), a 1-quart pot and a jumbo griddle. On the milchig pizza maker I cooked omelettes, cheese latkes, and heated blintzes and eggplant parmesan. I even warmed up milk in a pot on the pizza maker for my morning cup of joe. On the fleishig pizza maker, I heated shlishkes, potato knishes, and made fried chicken and barbecue chicken strips. I, too, am so happy with the pizza makers; I find that the food gets done in a few minutes. L.S.

I hope I don’t get a backlash from those claiming that children need an outlet in the form of hiking. Yes, it’s wonderful to commune with nature, to exercise and to have the chance to appreciate Hashem’s wonders, but every couple of days we hear of another child getting hurt or lost. Perhaps it’s time to get the message — to keep our kids closer to home and find safer forms of entertainment. Is an overnight camping trip the absolute ultimate form of drawing campers? rescue operations. They drop their work and family commitments at the first hint of trouble and join forces without a second thought. But now, in addition to my worrying about the safety of a Yiddishe child who is lost, I have to worry about my own Yiddishe child (a son, husband and father), who has traveled many hours to reach the search-and-rescue base and is being dispatched through unfamiliar territory to seek the lost child. Yes, I am so very proud of him, but yes, I am so very afraid for him. I have just read a description of the latest

search-and-rescue site; tumbling cascades, old growth, hardwood trees and dangerous terrain. Please keep our children safe. R.S.

ABOLISH THE TIPS Thank you for a wonderful circular and for the opportunity to allow me to share my take on a very crucial matter. Being the mother of both a counselor and also several young children in day camps, I feel my view is fair. It’s that time of the summer

where we are reminded to tip our children’s day camp counselors. In my case, as the suggested (mandatory!) tip is 15 dollars per counselor, my tip bill is well over 200 dollars. I believe that I speak for many parents out there when I say that summertime straps us so completely that it is extremely difficult to shell out the extra tip dollars. Being a counselor is part of the maturing process, where our teenage children move from being entertained to being entertainers. Yes, they work hard to the point of

exhaustion, and yes, they do deserve recognition. But I believe that the recognition can come in the form of nice appreciation notes and a treat. My counselor daughter comes home every afternoon exhausted, having poured all of her spirit and oomph into her work, but she is nevertheless so thrilled to be doing what she is. There is something very beneficial to having our teenage daughters in leadership positions, finally using their talents, feeling like they are making a difference. I believe that if we wouldn’t be talking about tips, our children’s counselors would be just fine without them. Let’s do away with this tipping business, and directors — it wouldn’t be a bad idea if you picked up the appreciation tab and treated your counselors to an appreciation evening. An Old Monseyer

(Inbox, Issue 208) Dear Store Owner, Thank you for bringing up the issue inherent when disputing credit card charges. I’d like to bring up another issue from the other side of the register. I love to shop in our local stores and patronize our dear brothers and sisters who give us such wonderful service and can surely use the parnassah! However, I’ve gone back to stores on several occasions with defective merchandise from reputable companies, and the store employees were not supportive at all. I’ve had friends with the same experience and exact same complaint as I had, who were told by store owners that no other customer has ever experienced this problem. Whether it’s a garment that pimpled, a shoe that ripped on the first wear or any similar situation, keep in mind that we pay top dollar and trust you to provide us with top quality. I just recently purchased a garment which was rendered unusable on the first wear, even before it was washed. The store owner felt very sorry for me but didn’t offer any compensation. So dear store owners. Please see the other side of the story as well. There are stores who are not ready to fix the issue as willingly as you mentioned in your letter. Thank you for broaching this topic, and let’s hope to see corrections in the future from both customers and store owners. A Customer

Parshas Matos-Masei By: Malka Schneps

When Sarah returned from seminary, she was eager to begin the next chapter of her life. She settled into a teaching position and looked forward to meeting her bashert. One by one, her friends got married and began building families. After a time, there was only Sarah left. I want to be where they are, she lamented. I do not want to stay where I am, being single. I want to move on — I’m ready to move on! How much longer do I have to stay in this station of life? Hindy had everything she could want in life: a great husband, wonderful children, a beautiful home and comfortable finances. When she lost her husband, she was forced to move from her beautiful home to a small apartment farther out from the center of town. Consequently, her two oldest sons moved in with their zeidy, partly to be closer to yeshivah and partly because there was so little room in the apartment. In the span of a few months, Hindy went from being a happy wife and mother with all of her children at home, to a single mother who did not have all of her children at home. Why? Why is Hashem doing this to me? she lamented. I was happy where I was, and now I am being taken on a journey I have no interest in! If only I could go back to the life I left behind… Parshas Matos begins, “Vay’dabeir Moshe el roshei hamatos livnei Yisroel leimor, zeh hadavar asher tzivah Hashem — Moshe

70 / THE MONSEY VIEW

spoke to the heads of the tribes of Bnei Yisroel, saying: ‘This is the thing Hashem has commanded’” (Bamidbar 30:2). The Rebbe of Chmielnik, zt”l, explains that the word matos is related to the word matah, which means low. At times when a person is feeling low, he should remember, “Zeh hadavar asher tzivah Hashem — This is the thing Hashem has commanded.” No matter how low the circumstance in which a person might find himself, he should remember that Hashem planned it, and therefore it is for his good. If a person succeeds in remembering that his circumstances are from Hashem, the Rebbe of Chmielnik guarantees that his situation will improve. R’ Elimelech Biderman, shlit”a, likens this to an explanation given by R’ Chaim Volozhiner, zt”l, on a passage from Tehillim. It says (Tehillim 23), “Mizmor l’Dovid. Hashem ro’i lo echsar… — A song of Dovid. Hashem is my Shepherd; I shall not lack. He has me rest in green pastures; He leads me to pure waters.” Dovid Hamelech likens our relationship with Hashem to a sheep’s relationship with its shepherd. Elaborating on this, R’ Chaim Volozhiner explains that conflicts sometimes arise between sheep and their shepherd. Sometimes a shepherd brings the sheep to a certain field, but the sheep remember a different field that had better grass, and they want to re-

turn to that field. The shepherd knows that the grass in that field has all been eaten already, so he does not allow them to return to the field they want. At other times, the sheep are in a wonderful field full of delicious grass and they wish to remain there, but the shepherd forces them to move on, bringing them to a spring of fresh water so that they can quench their thirst and find relief from the hot sun. Our job as Hashem’s flock is to trust that Hashem, our Shepherd, knows what is best for us, and to place our trust in Him. Sometimes in life we are content where we are and want to remain in a place that feels good to us, but Hashem has other plans and we find ourselves in new circumstances, like Hindy in the story above. At other times, we may find ourselves in circumstances we would not choose, like Sarah. At those times, we may wish to leave the place where we are and journey someplace else, where it looks more appealing. It is not easy to look for the good when we are in a place of hardship, but we do not have to look for the good or to find the good. We simply need to know that it is good, because it comes from Hashem and Hashem is our Shepherd. Rather than fighting our circumstances, learning to accept them with trust in the One Who brought them about may be just what is required of us in order to move on.

Chaverim to the Rescue… Again! For the second time in two weeks, Chaverim of Rockland played a pivotal role in a search taking place miles from home, this time assisting in an effort to locate a 15-year-old boy who went missing while hiking in the mountains of Vermont. Montreal resident Shmuel Rabinowitz was part of a group of teens from a New England–based Pioneers Camp who traveled to Killington, Vermont, on July 25 for an overnight trip in the woods. The teens made a brief stop at a waterfall, and when the group moved on at approximately 7:30 p.m., no one noticed that Rabinowitz had been inadvertently left behind. Local authorities were contacted when it became clear that Rabinowitz was missing, and by 9 p.m., the Vermont State Police issued a bulletin stating that a young hiker was lost on the Appalachian Trail. Local law enforcement and search-and-rescue teams, including the Vermont State Police Search and Rescue Team, Killington Search and Rescue, New England K-9 Search and Rescue, Upper Valley Wilderness Response Team, U.S. Forest Service, Green Mountain Club and the Vermont National Guard were all called in to look for Rabinowitz, with two separate parties reaching out to Chaverim of Rockland for help early the next morning. A group of 25 Chaverim members made the fourhour trip to Killington the next morning with a fully stocked command center, printing up flyers with Rabinowitz’s picture and distributing them to hikers and aiding in the search effort. Several hours later, a hiker spotted Rabinowitz and the two continued together to a spot that had phone service, where the teen used the hiker’s phone to contact his mother who had already made her way to the Chaverim command center. Chaverim instructed Rabinowitz to hang up the phone and call 911 so that the call center’s high-tech equipment could be used to pinpoint his location. It took approximately two hours for rescue teams to locate Rabinowitz, who appeared puzzled when he met the searchers. “They told him that they had been looking for him and he asked, ‘Why? I’m not lost,’” said Chaverim coordinator Yossi Margaretten. “He was sure that he was just a little behind the rest of the group, and he kept hiking on the trail, expecting to meet up with them.” In truth, Rabinowitz took at least one wrong turn while attempting to catch up with his friends, ultimate-

ly ending up 19 miles away from his original destination. Having been prepared to spend the night on the mountain, the 15-year-old had a sleeping bag and other supplies and had been taught numerous skills in camp, including wilderness survival, fire building, climbing and how to build an outdoor shelter. After being found, Rabinowitz told rescuers that he was a little tired and that at one point during the night he had come to a road and had unsuccessfully tried to flag down passing cars. Several other community groups, including COMMSAR, took part in the search for Rabinowitz, both on the ground and from the air, and others who volunteered their services were asked not to come because the extra manpower wasn’t needed at that time.

CHAPTER FIFTEEN

Recap: Emil helps Edo and Gustav escape the orphanage. They arrive at the home of Janek and Ulush Cohen. Janek questions Gustav, who doesn’t remember anything about his background. In Yerushalayim, Elisheva is plagued by a nightmare in which the whole deal with Korman turns out to be false. “My daytime fears have invaded my dreams at night,” Elisheva told Eliyahu, who had gotten up to prepare her a cup of tea. “I can call the bank line again, if that will calm you down, so that you can hear the recording that says there is 180,000 shekels in the account.” “I know it was deposited.” She shook her head. “I know it for a fact. But...” “But what?” In the dark, she stared at her palms, but couldn’t find the words with which to express her fears. “We’ve checked into this story from every angle.” Eliyahu sat down onto a chair that someone had left near the door of their room. “The millionaire exists, Rosenblit is a lawyer with a paper trail, receipts and everything, and the first installment of the money is already in our bank — or rather, it’s flowing freely out of the bank, baruch Hashem.” “And we’re flowing along with it.” Her smile was a bit crooked. “Yes, with all the running around and shopping, I’m getting very used to this new reality. But apparently, somewhere inside me, there is anxiety lurking. I guess it’s only

natural.” “Very natural,” Eliyahu said, looking at the untouched cup of tea he had prepared. “I feel that way too. When someone tells me that there are two million shekels waiting to buy an apartment for my daughter, and all I have to do is find the apartment, I feel a bit uneasy about it. But I don’t know if it’s disbelief or the discomfort of using money from other people.” “It’s not a donation, Eliyahu!” She was indignant. For him. For herself. For Tzippy. “It’s like a grant of sorts, like what you get from your kollel.” “Right,” he said slowly, “but...” Now it was his turn to be at a loss for words. “You’re even clarifying if we have to give ma’aser from it...” He smiled. “Actually, a poor man also has to give ma’aser from the tzedakah money that he gets.” She didn’t react. “But I didn’t mean that it was a donation; I also realize that this is something very different,” he hastened to explain. “I agree with you on this point. It’s just that the whole thing is a little hard for me, personally.”

What is Equine Therapy A. This is a type of experiential mental health treatment that involves interacting with horses to treat a wide range of mental health issues.

Q. How does Equine Therapy work? A. Horses have a natural ability to pick up on human emotional needs. They are patient, perceptive, and attuned to displays of fear, anger, agitation, and despair, often mirroring human moods in a nonjudgmental way. As the person in therapy bonds with the horse, self-awareness grows and emotional healing often takes place.

Q. What can Equine Therapy help with? A. Equine Therapy can increase individuals’ cognitive skills, reduce stress, ease symptoms of PTSD, and address symptoms of depression. It has even been found to improve difficult relationship patterns and behaviors that compromise safety.

doesn’t give up so fast. He was here bright and early, with a policeman, and asked if we know someone by the name of Emil. Then he looked over all of the children here, one by one.” The director sat down. “We need to get Gustav and Edo out of the city.” “I don’t think it’s safe for them to go out onto the street yet; their orphanage may even have someone posted at the train station.” “So we’ll wait a few days.” The director remained alone with Janek in the room; the counselor went back to the children. “Meanwhile, you shouldn’t be coming here. I don’t want them to see you. I think you should also minimize your visits to the Agudah.” “I’m just on my way there.” Janek leaned on the wall. “I promised Gustav that I’d try to find out some information about his family.” “How?” The lone word bounced around the room.

“Yes,” Theodore Heinke said darkly. “You showed me whoever was in the rooms.” “I don’t know. I don’t even have where to start, but maybe if I meet someone who’s looking for a child about this age, we can try to see if it fits.” “Don’t go,” Walken urged. “I’ll ask someone to look into it for you. Go home. Spend some time with the two boys, and think of how we can safely send them on. In the meantime, try to awaken their memories. Do they remember Shabbos? Kiddush? Something?” “We haven’t had much time to speak. Only Gustav was awake when I left, and it’s safe to assume that the younger one doesn’t remember anything anyway. How old was he when he arrived at the orphanage? Two?” “What does the form that Emil took say?” “That in 1944, at the age of two, he was placed in the orphanage due to ‘the death of his parents in the bombardments’ that either did or did not happen.” “Hmm. The year 1944… that was very close to the end of the war. The question is what they know about him, besides for what they wrote on the official documents… Wait a minute, how was Emil so sure that the boy was Jewish?” “The older one insisted he is, and besides, there was a little J on the bottom of the page, and that only appeared on the forms of these two boys.” Janek passed a hand over his forehead. “It’s true, we have to find a way to get the real information

about Edo out of there.” “And any information about Gustav that we can get.” “He said that the assistant director of the place found him, and that no one knows anything about him.” “That’s what they told him.” “Yes... So we need to try and get information about both of them. But I can’t take the risk of doing it.” Janek was worried. “You realize, I’m not the only one who helped kidnap them; my wife was also actively involved...” “I’ll try to contact them,” Rabbi Walken said. “I’ll tell this Theodore that the fact that the first thing he did, after discovering two of his boys missing, was come and look for them here, makes me assume that the boys are Jewish, so perhaps they have relatives here. And maybe the relatives would be able to provide them with some helpful information…” “And you think he’ll give you some details then?” “Maybe.” “But it’s also likely that he’ll realize that if you’re inquiring about their identity, then you must have an idea about where they could be now.” “I’ll explain to him that as Jews, we care about every Jewish child, especially since they are such a rare commodity today... And I’ll tell him that we are ready to send volunteers to help with the search.” “And who will these boys belong to, after they are ‘found’? Them or us?” “We’ll reach an agreement ahead of time. Maybe we’ll pay him and we’ll get them like that... In any case, I’m not planning to ‘find’ them.” “That’s an idea,” Janek said cautiously. To be continued...

Perhaps you’ve seen the ads popping up all over for “horse therapy” (if not, just flip forward or backward and eventually you’ll find them) and have wondered what it’s all about. How, you may have thought, are horses related to health? The truth is that these gentle giants offer us a plethora of benefits. So saddle up and come along for the ride as we explore equineassisted therapies.

106 / THE MONSEY VIEW

For so many people with so many different issues, horses have proven to be the code that finally cracks the safe of healing. Used in conjunction with traditional therapies, equine-assisted therapy often rounds out the picture, tipping the balance in a positive direction. But what is it about horses that enables them to be so beneficial to man, and who is it that can benefit from interaction with these four-leggers? The answer to that question is as varied as the ailments that plague this earth.

PHYSICAL/ COGNITIVE BENEFITS For some, the primary reason for seeking out services at the stable is solely physical in nature. Parents of children with low muscle tone, for instance, might enroll their little loved ones in horse-riding sessions to increase core strength. The natural gait of the horse forces the core muscles

THE MONSEY VIEW / 107

to work hard to keep the rider in an upright position. For those with severe hypotonia, the first few sessions might make them feel like a puddle on a pony, their body drooping all over the place. But with time, the muscles build themselves up in a way that just feels like fun. On the opposite end of the spectrum is hypertonia, or increased muscle tone, which can present as rigidly contracted limbs, lack of flexibility or poor gait. For children suffering from hypertonia, the natural rhythm of the horse’s walking can loosen up their muscles, giving them a greater range of motion. Even muscles that we wouldn’t imagine are exercised while riding get a workout on horseback. For this reason, speech therapists sometimes recommend complementary equine-assisted therapy for their clients. While riding a horse, the ribcage and shoulders automatically rise, strengthening the diaphragm and paving the way for easier speaking. Children with sensory issues also frequently find being around horses to be a life-changing experience. Everything from the fur under their hands to the earthy horse smell — and of course, the gentle roll of the horse’s movement or, alternatively, the thrill of galloping around the arena — speaks to these children, calming them or engaging them, enabling a need deep within themselves to be fulfilled. Children with autism spectrum dis-

orders (ASD), specifically, are very often enchanted by horses, often experiencing a drop in symptom severity for the short term following a therapeutic session. Dr. Temple Grandin, a widely respected scholar of animal behavior and a woman on the autism spectrum disorder herself, asserts that people with autism and horses share a special connection, as they “see, feel and think in remarkably similar ways.” By this, she means that the ASD brain processes and stores information in a format cognitively different from those not on the spectrum, and in a manner somewhat akin to the sensory format of equines. For this reason, she believes, people on the spectrum often form satisfying bonds with horses, their furry friends adding a bright light to their lives. There are times when equine-assisted therapy doesn’t even require a horse to be mounted. Sessions can center on cognitive planning, such as preparing the horse’s tack for a riding session, or exercises in responsibility, such as feeding and grooming the horse.

EMOTIONAL BENEFITS Aside from the lasting physical and cognitive benefits, many children find the sessions themselves to be emotionally freeing. “When I’m riding a horse, I can finally walk. I can even run, because the horse is my legs,”

Working with a horse is, simply put, empowering.

108 / THE MONSEY VIEW / July 31, 2019 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484

described one dimpled-cheek little boy I watched undergo a therapy session. “When I’m on the horse, I’m not just ‘the kid with cerebral palsy.’” When someone has little control over his life — or at least his limbs — the ability to control a thousand-pound animal gives him an enhanced sense of self-esteem. And being that horses are non-judgmental of physical disabilities, people who suffer from them find a place of emotional freedom when it’s just them and the horse. There in the arena, there’s no room for preconceived notions or self-deprecating feelings. It’s a place to just be. Children who are debilitatingly shy, or even mute, often crave the attention of a horse, going out of their comfort zone to engage in ways that surprise parents. “I never knew she could do that!” and “He made me so proud” are common phrases uttered by teary-eyed parents who’ve brought their child for therapeutic sessions. Likewise, the socially inept or children with a tendency for aggression find that the horses naturally encourage them to work on emotional regulation. Horses are great mirrors, and when a person isn’t calm and in control, the animals become skittish and prefer to distance themselves from the person. Nobody wants to be shunned by a horse! The arena is therefore the perfect place for a person to practice self-calming methods that will help them in other areas of life, as well. Being an animal of prey, horses are extremely intuitive and are by nature distrusting. Working with a horse is all about building trust — trust in oneself and trust in the horse. But once trust is gained (and not destroyed), horses are friends for life. A person meeting with a horse must learn to present themselves as calm and unthreatening as possible. To be free from fear. To be free from anger. To believe in one’s ability to safely engage with an animal that towers above them. Working with a horse is, simply put, empowering. For this reason, horses are often used in therapy for people who have had their self-worth stolen from them through trauma. Jaycee Lee Dugard was abducted as an 11-year-old child and held captive for 18 years of her life. When she was finally discovered, it was a long road to recovery. For her, equine-assisted therapy was the turning point. There was nothing quite like the security of being near a large animal that she knew would cause her no harm. Her faith in humans had been crushed, but the gentleness of the giants she worked with helped her regain trust in living beings. “Animals have taught me compassion and empathy and always made me feel loved, no matter what.” Nowadays, Dugard runs the JAYC foundation

for families who have undergone extreme trauma. There on the JAYC ranch, families engage in horse-related activities that help them recover and move on. The horse is a tool that highlights the emotions of a person, the connection of a family. They can also be a calming tool, deflecting focus from the intense pain that is often encountered in talk therapy while the session is being held. Some therapists will have their client simply sit on the horse and talk while in motion. “Horses have the special ability to make you be totally in the moment,” Jaycee Lee Dugard claims, “making talking about the trauma I went through so much easier and less painful.” War veterans suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) often find that horses give them a second lease on life — literally. Many of them have returned from battles overseas having seen sights that no man should behold, having done things that no conscience can carry. For veterans with PTSD, the days and nights can stretch endlessly, the nightmares of the past seeping into their every thought, conjuring up extreme emotions that a sufferer might seek to escape. To this end, equine-assisted therapy sessions have been set up across the country and are provided to veterans free of charge. For those who take advantage of them, the experience is life-changing. On one ranch with open riding, a veteran named Miller who still battled intensely with what he’d seen and done climbed upon a horse and tried to control it. But the horse, feeling the incredible stress of the person on his back, tried to knock Miller off. The veteran’s instinctual reaction was to fight the horse, increasing tension on the reins — but that only made things worse. Finally realizing that in order to calm the animal, he’d first have to be calm, Miller forced himself to do just that, dumping negative emotions and relaxing his body. “The horse just wanted to find a spot of peace,” Miller said. He realized that he was seeking the same. “I found it, giving that horse peace.” Of course, healing from PTSD — or anything else, for that matter — isn’t quite as simple as 1-23. But with continued therapeutic sessions, many people see improvements through equine-assisted therapy. Linda Kohanov, a respected professional in the field of equine-assisted psychotherapy, says that “horse wisdom is more concerned with the present than the past or the future. If they sense danger, horses race to safety, then go right back to grazing. They don’t stay up all night worrying about lions. They go right back to enjoying life, taking it minute by minute, and they can teach us to do that.” In our hectic, frenzied, anxiety-ridden world of deadlines and appointments, maybe all of us can learn a lesson from a horse!

They’re simple folk. They’re wagon drivers. Jewish history has always linked wagon drivers with simplicity. Here are some snippets about “simple” wagon drivers who were not at all as simple as they appeared to be.

118 / THE MONSEY VIEW

THE MONSEY VIEW / 119

THE BAAL SHEM TOV’S WAGON DRIVER It was Lag Ba’omer 1733, still before the Baal Shem Tov’s greatness was known, when he turned to two talmidim and announced that he was headed for Brody, a town rather far away. The Baal Shem Tov asked whether they could care for the sheep, as he would be taking along his young gentile shepherd, Alexei, to be his wagon driver. The Baal Shem Tov promised to return before nightfall. “How can you possibly go and return in one day?” they asked in wonder. “Brody is far from here.” The Baal Shem Tov assured them not to worry and went on his way. As the Baal Shem Tov and his wife, Chana, settled into the wagon, he instructed Alexei to sit facing them, rather than look forward. “The horses know the way on their own.” It didn’t take long until they arrived at Brody, at the home of his brother-in-law, Reb Gershon Kitover, but Reb Gershon wasn’t home, having traveled to Leipzig. The Baal Shem Tov wrote a letter to his brother-in-law asking him to return home for he was about to reveal his greatness to the world, and his rebbetzin set out with the letter to Leipzig. In the meantime, Alexei and the Baal Shem Tov headed back home. It was nearly dark when they arrived at the field. The two talmidim were relieved to see the Baal Shem Tov, for they were anxious about caring for the sheep in the dark.

“Is it true that you traveled to Brody and back in one day?” they asked. The Baal Shem Tov responded in the affirmative and explained that teachings of Kabbalah on the words of the pasuk describing how Avraham’s servant, Eliezer, traveled to find a kallah for Yitzchak had the potency to arouse this nes. Now the talmidim were envious of Alexei, the gentile lad. How come he had the privilege of joining the Baal Shem Tov on such a special journey of kefitzas haderech? The Baal Shem Tov explained that Alexei had the zechus of his father, Georgi. One day, as he’d been walking among the hills of Kitov, the Baal Shem Tov told his talmidim, he heard a voice calling out to him to draw near. It was the gentile, Georgi, standing near a large rock. Georgi revealed to him that about a month earlier, he had seen a prestigious-looking man walking among the hills. The man had bent down, placed something between the rocks and walked away. Georgi had been curious. He’d inched closer to see the treasure that the man had left behind. But the man had not left yet. He was hiding a few feet away, waiting to see who would come take his treasure. The man warned Georgi not to touch the holy writings that he had hidden, threatening that Georgi’s hand would never be able to move again if he did. Anyone else who would touch the pages would suffer the same plight — besides for one holy man, Yisroel, who frequented these mountains. “And that’s how I received the heilige writings of Reb Adam Baal Shem,” the Baal Shem Tov concluded. As an expression of the Baal Shem Tov’s gratitude, Georgi’s son Alexei was privileged to accompany the Baal Shem Tov on this and many other miraculously shortened travels.

THE WAGONLESS WAGON DRIVER When Shraga harnessed his horses to his wooden wagon that morning, the skies were blue and the temperature pleasant. But as morning became afternoon, dark clouds appeared as if out of nowhere. Soon they unleashed their vehemence, swamping the roads with torrential rains, and the winds picked up speed. It was a real storm! Shraga feared for his life and hoped to make it home safely. Suddenly, he noticed a man standing at the roadside, mud coming up to his ankles. He was waving his hands wildly, trying to catch Shraga’s attention, but it was hard to hear what the man was saying over the loud howls of the wind. It looked like a Yid, Shraga realized. He yanked the reins sharply, willing the horses to stand strong against the strong gusts. The man clambered into the wagon and Shraga discovered that he was none other than the heilige tzaddik, Reb Moshe Leib of Sassov! The tzaddik had been visiting his elderly parents and also got caught in the sudden storm. Finally, the wagon pulled up outside Shraga’s home, and Shraga invited the tzaddik inside. Reb Moshe Leib was extremely grateful to the wagon driver and wanted to give him a bracha. “Do

you have anything of value?” he asked. Shraga didn’t have to think long. “My two horses!” he replied. “One will be for Purim and one for Pesach!” the tzaddik said. Soon he was on his way, leaving Shraga and his wife puzzled at the vague bracha. Shortly before Purim, one of Shraga’s horses died. Saddened by the loss, Shraga nevertheless made the best of the situation and sold the meat to a gentile and the hides to a tanner. The profit was enough to cover his Purim expenses. A few weeks later, as Pesach approached, the second horse died! So this is what the tzaddik was referring to, but — how is it a blessing? Shraga was puzzled. Again, he sold the carcass and was able to bring in Pesach without a worry. With no source of income, the wagon driver took to the roads in search of a new job. One evening, he stepped into an inn and overheard two gentiles talking. They were looking for a manager for the poritz’s estates. Apparently, the pompous poritz had fired one manager after another and asked these men to find a suitable candidate. “Excuse me,” Shraga said. “Perhaps I can do the job.” Unbelievably, the poritz was highly pleased with his new manager, and Shraga lived peacefully off his comfortable wage for many, many years.

A wealthy chassid of the Tzemach Tzedek of Lubavitch never closed a business deal without first seeking counsel from his Rebbe. Once, the Tzemach Tzedek requested that he hire a particular wagon driver for his next trip. The businessman found this interesting, as the Rebbe never paid heed to such matters. Still, a few months later, as he prepared to visit again, he hired that wagon driver. When he arrived, the Rebbe asked the businessman to bring the wagon driver to him. The wagon driver hesitated. “Who am I to have an audience with such a holy man! I am a simple wagon driver…” But the businessman coaxed him to come along. The Rebbe welcomed the wagon driver warmly and even invited him to join him for a meal the following day. Rebbetzin Chaya Mushka was asked to prepare a festive seudah in the man’s honor. The chassidim were duly puzzled. What merit could this simple Jew have that he was receiving

such royal treatment? The wagon driver, too, seemed bewildered. But after the chassidim begged him to share any good deed he may have done, the driver told them, “As a wagon driver, I travel all over. A long time ago, I realized that many Yidden live in outlying villages, and that there is often no qualified mohel in town. I learned under a professional mohel, and soon I was able to perform brissim for a number of newborns. “Recently, I was riding through the forest and heard pitiful cries coming from a nearby hut. I went to investigate and found a new mother crying desperately. Her husband was on his deathbed, too sick to move, and her baby was eight days old. With her husband unable to travel to fetch a mohel from the nearest town, she didn’t know how her baby would have his bris. “The woman was so happy to hear that I’m a mohel. But there was no one to be sandek; the father was bedridden! I went to the roadside, hoping to find a passerby who could help. Finally, just before dusk, I noticed a Yid and begged him to come take part in the bris. Reluctantly, he accepted. “After the bris, we sat down for a bris seudah consisting of the bread and cheese that I had in my rucksack. The guest suggested that we call the father to the table to complete the zimun. Miraculously, the nearly lifeless man stood upright and joined us. After the meal, I went out to get something from my wagon, and when I returned, the guest had disappeared…” The chassidim were amazed at the tale. The next day, after the wagon driver dined with the

Rebbe, the Tzemach Tzedek announced, “I very much wanted to eat a meal with someone who merited eating at the same table as Avraham Avinu.”

THE INCOMPETENT WAGON DRIVER When the Brisker Rav, Rav Yosef Dov Soloveitchik, was but a young student in Volozhin, he had a strong desire to meet the great talmid chacham Rav Shlomo Kluger. There was a little problem, though. Rav Kluger lived in Brody, Ukraine, while Yosef Dov was in yehivah in Prussia. How could he possibly afford to hire a wagon to take him there? He came up with a plan. Changing into peasant clothes, Yosef Dov approached a wagon driver and offered to be his apprentice in exchange for a trip to Brody. The wagon driver was more than happy and immediately put the boy to work greasing the wagon wheels and grooming the horse. The smell and grease were uncomfortable, but Yosef Dov was excited at the prospect of getting to Brody. Soon they were on their way. At some point, the driver asked Yosef Dov to take over while he took a nap. Holding the reins, Yosef Dov was suffused with excitement at his impending meeting and let his thoughts wander to the pages of the Gemara. Suddenly, the wagon came to an abrupt, bumpy halt as it hit a ditch. This woke the driver and he immediate-

ly noticed that they had veered from the route to Brody. “You’ll never be a wagon driver!” he yelled at his new apprentice. Yosef Dov meekly handed over the reins. In Brody, Yosef Dov was welcomed by Rav Kluger who engaged him in a high-level Torah discussion. Amazed at the brilliance of this young scholar, Rav Kluger asked him to speak in shul on Shabbos. After his talk, an ashamed wagon driver approached Yosef Dov. “I’m so sorry!” he said. “I didn’t know you were a talmid chacham! I never would have yelled at you like that.” “It’s okay,” Yosef Dov replied. “I guess I am truly not meant to be a wagon driver.”

THE DANCING WAGON DRIVER When the group of chassidim arrived in Lublin, each of them got busy preparing for an audience with the Chozeh. They hardly paid attention to their wagon driver who would be staying with the horses. But the wagon driver approached them and, handing over a folded paper, requested that they give over his kvittel to the Rebbe. When the Rebbe looked at the wagon driver’s kvittel, his face shone. “The wagon driver who wrote that kvittel is a simple Yid,” the surprised chassidim told the Rebbe. “At this very moment,” the Rebbe countered, “this Yid is performing a mitzvah more special than you can imagine.” The chassidim rushed to find their wagon driver. He wasn’t in the stable. They searched all over town until they found him at a chasunah where he was dancing at the center of the circle with tremendous joy. Later, the driver explained his elation. “While you were at the Rebbe, I had finished tending to the horses, and I took a little walk and saw a chuppah erected in the town square. But something was strange. The kallah was standing in one corner in tears, and the chasan was standing at the opposite end, gesturing animatedly. The rav was running between the two… “Someone told me that the kallah had no dowry, but had promised to give her chasan a tallis. When the chasan realized that she had not come up with even that little item promised, he grew upset and refused to go to the chuppah. “Business had gone well for me this week, so I took out a few kopeks and ran to buy a new tallis for the chasan. “Wouldn’t you be just as happy, if you had the chance to perform such a mitzvah?!” the driver concluded.

By: Hadassah Steinman

Texas is the largest state in the country after Alaska, and its population is also the second largest in the United States, after California. The considerable Texas population means that approximately 10 percent of Americans call Texas home… Good for y’all!

Like most of the United States, the Texas region was originally home to many Native American tribes, most notably the Caddo. The name “Texas” derives from a Caddoan word that means friends, or allies, and perhaps that is why the state’s motto is “friendship.”

Texas has a pretty colorful history, and it is this background that the catchphrase “six flags over Texas” references. The Texas area was first claimed by the Spaniards — which is represented by the first flag — and Texas was considered Spanish territory for almost three centuries, until 1821. For five years or so, however, from 1685 until 1690, the French held sovereignty over the state after a French nobleman established a colony in Texas, but after his murder, the colony was abandoned. That was the end of the second flag. In 1821, Mexico’s independence was recognized by Spain, and so Texas moved under Mexico’s sovereignty, marked by the third flag. A mere 15 years later, Texas declared their independence, and until 1845, Texas was its own country, known as the Republic of Texas! This period is represented by the fourth flag, and it is this flag of the Republic of Texas that later became their state flag. Finally, in 1845, Texas joined the United States and was proud to bear the American flag. But this changed a few years later, when Texas joined the Confederacy during the Civil War. This accounted for their sixth flag, until the end of the war, when the South once again rejoined the Union. Today Texas is proud of their history, and six seals, representing the six sovereignties, are displayed on the dome of the Texas State Capitol. The phrase “six flags over Texas” has been used in the naming of many Texan companies and enterprises, one of which is… Six Flags Theme Parks! Six Flags was founded in Texas, and while its first park is known as Six Flags Over Texas, the parks built later were simply called Six Flags. Today, Six Flags’ headquarters is located in Grand Prairie, Texas.

134 / THE MONSEY VIEW

Texas is known as “The Lone Star State,” and this lone star is featured on both the state’s flag and seal. This name symbolizes its former — and short-lived — status as an independent country, and for its difficult struggle for independence from Mexico.

While Austin is the capital of Texas, Houston is its most populous city (and the fourth most populous city in the country). Houston was named for Sam Houston, hero of the Texas Revolution who later became the President of Texas, then a United States Senator, and then Governor of Texas. Interestingly, however, the most famous Texan was actually born in Virginia, and then managed to be part of the House of Representatives and then Governor of Tennessee even before Texas came to know Sam Houston...

Proud Texans love to boast that the first word spoken on the moon was “Houston.” But wait — not so fast…

Texan culture seems to like everything big and fast, and that is why it comes as no surprise that Texas State Highway 130 boasts the fastest speed limit in the United States. On that piece of road, cars can drive at a shocking 85 mph with no fear of police intervention…

While it is true that Neil Armstrong contacted NASA’s Mission Control Center located in Houston — radio callsign simply “Houston” — almost immediately after landing on the moon, the truth is that this specific, and significant, communication came after a basic procedural checklist was completed, out loud, by Armstrong and Aldrin. Only after the engine and controls were inspected did Armstrong say: “Houston, Tranquility Base here. The Eagle has landed.”

Texas is also home to the largest rose garden in the world. The Tyler Municipal Rose Garden also holds the annual Texas Rose Festival, which draws thousands of visitors each year.
