rabbi itamar garbuz R’ Yochanan Ben Zakai 7 Rosh Yeshivas Orchas Torah

‫הרב איתמר גרבוז‬

‫ בני ברק‬7 ‫ר' יוחנן בן זכאי‬ ‫ראש ישיבת אורחות תורה‬

22 Iyar 5779 My dear friend Harav Hagaon Avrohom Halevi Eisen, the Pozna Rov, shlit”a, Founder of the Shas Yiden Kollelim Network in the Holy Land I thank you for the great pleasure that you gave me with the examination of the avreichim of Kolel Shas Yiden. Their remarkable answers captivated the soul and revealed their expansive, deep and encompassing knowledge. Their countenances reflected their essence, as did their nobility of their pleasantness and their immersion and cleaving to the Torah. Those who know Shas are recognized by their faces, because such faces are different. I feel obliged to comment with wondrousness that here we did not see just clear knowledge of the entire Shas, but also delving, in-depth, clear reasoning and expansive knowledge of the words of the Rishonim. So much so, that I was amazed at this great sight, that clearly E-lohim is to be found in this Holy Place, Kolel Shas Yiden. They have merited to achieve wonders in both penetration of the subjects and also allencompassing knowledge. Thus, I praise the Rabbonim Geonim, and I hereby testify that I merited to wonder about their ‘pitcher of knowledge’ and to witness their nature from up close; and to test them vigorously on the entire Shas Bavli by heart. I quizzed them with many types of questions, encompassing and in-depth, and they knew the answers without any hesitation, together with the page numbers of the Shas and of other sources. Praised are my eyes that I witnessed this, and happy is the People (Klal Yisroel) that this phenomenon is theirs. My blessings are that they should go from strength to strength, to rise to higher and higher lofty heights of Torah as they strive to do, and to see nachas from the fruits of their work and toil. And my blessings to you shlit”a, who merits to propagate Torah in such a solid manner, that one cannot adequately quantify or describe. May your zechus bring you blessings in all good things. Together with you, all those who stand by you and support you, should be blessed from Heaven with all the brochos that are written in the Torah – Amen Selah. With blessing for the honor of those who know Torah,

Itamar Garbuz

Shas Yiden Meet An All-encompassing In-depth Farher Head On

By Rabbi Eliezer Sandler

Facing one of the most searching farhers to date, the Shas Yiden geonim avreichim once again astounded the examiner. Those present, travelling from New York, found the scholarship nothing short of amazing! With comments like: “They own Shas!” “Their accomplishment is just ‘beyond’…” “I thought the claim that they all complete Shas five times a year was hallucinatory talk, but with my own eyes I saw them in action – just something else!” Giving the farher on this occasion was Harav Hagaon Itamar Garbuz, shlit”a, Rosh Yeshiva of Orchos Torah (appointed by Maran Hagaon Aharon Leib Steiman, zt”l) and Rosh of the 15 kollelim ofTaharos (appointed by Maran Hagaon Mechel Yehuda Lefkowitz, zt”l).For a full hour, Rav Garbuz conducted a non-stop, penetrating,

all-encompassing examination. It is not possible to fully describe all the fascinating and deep responses, the heated dynamic of Torah, and the power and the personal spiritual gifts which this entire experience involved and demonstrated. The Rosh Yeshiva expressed his amazement at the knowledge of these geonim avreichim. He said, “These are not just ‘regular’ Shas Yiden who show a broad knowledge of the text of Shas. Behold, here we have seen and heard knowledge of the Shas in depth, with Rishonim and they have the needed scholarship.” Simply, it is also not possible not to emphasize their pansophic knowledge which is extraordinary. In his conclusion, Rav Garbuz blessed the founder of Shas Yiden, Hagaon Harav Avrohom Eisen, shlit”a, the

Pozna Rov, together with the supporters who travelled from overseas to be present at the farher and to meet with the Nasi of Shas Yiden, Maran Hagaon, Sar Hatorah, Harav Chaim Kanievsky, shilt”a, and other gedolei Torah who are avid supporters of Shas Yiden. Rav Garbuz again expressed his excitement at the Shas Yiden phenomenon. He then added that he was jealous of their zechus in supporting this incredible endeavor and the development of these geonim avreichim who are unique in our generation. For more information on Shas Yiden, to view live farhers, including that of Rav Garbuz, or to donate, click on www.shasyiden.com

Some of the wide-ranging questions: • We all know the statement “One can rely on Rabbi Shimon in the case of an emergency“. What is considered the emergency for which we are relying on Rabbi Shimon? How many times do we find this in Chazal? Their immediate responses: Shabbos 45a – muktzeh; Brochos 9a – recitation of the Shma; Gittin 19a – shtar mukdam. Then they added Rabbi Elazar in Niddah 6b; Eiruvin 46a in the sugya of in ‘m’eis l’eis’.

• Is an egg is considered food or a liquid and explain? Three immediate responses: Beitza 2a; Yoma 80a; Sanhedrin 5b.

Rav Chaga at 18 – Moed Katan 25a. Who concluded a maseches at a younger age? ‘Hahu yanuka’ concluded Avoda Zara at age 6 – Avoda Zara 56b.

• In Shabbos, how many disputes are there between Rabbi Shimon and Rabbi Yehuda? Immediately they listed them all and their page numbers. All present could not believe their eyes and ears.

• How many mishnayos in Shas have no gemara on them? Bechoros 13a, Rosh Hashanna 22b, Nedarim 63b.

• Which Amora concluded Shas at a young age? Rav Cahanah at 18 - Shabbos 63a;

• Which daf in Shas contains the expressions of Rava only? Bechoros 59.

Rabbi Nachman said: "My Rosh HaShanah

is greater than everything. I cannot understand how it is that if my followers really believe in me, they are not all scrupulous about being with me for Rosh HaShanah. No one should be missing! Rosh HaShanah is my whole mission." He told us to make a public announcement that everyone who counted himself one of his followers or took notice of what he said should come to him for Rosh HaShanah without exception. Anyone who has the peivilege of being with him for Rosh HaShanah is entitled to be very, very happy. "Go your way, eat the fat and drink the sweet, for the joy of the Lord is your strength" (Nehemiah 8:10) – this verse refers to Rosh HaShanah. (Tzadik #403)

How can one leave his wife and children? Why is it so important and unique to travel to Uman for Rosh Hashana and to be by Rebbe Nachman, more than any other place in the world?

If there is such a tumult in Uman, aren’t I better off going to a calmer and more placid place to really be able to pray?

What can I personally gain from being by Rebbe Nachman for Rosh Hashana?

Why do we need a tzaddik? Why can’t we pray for ourselves?

All these questions about Uman Rosh Hashana!

This is your opportunity to get the proper and reliable answers. Breslov Research Institute’s (BRI) Rav Chaim Kramer will be hosted at the exhibition hall of “Or Chaim” at a special evening devoted to this,

on Monday September 2nd

HOW THE TRAIL MARKER LOOKS

(Re: Ten Recommended Family Friendly Hikes, Issue 212) I would like to thank The Monsey View for last week’s list of ten recommended trails in the area. I hiked the “West Mountain” trail you featured, and it was a really beautiful hike that I enjoyed immensely. I would like to clarify one thing. In the recommended route, the instructions are to take the white-blazed Appalachian Trail until the red-blazed Fawn Trail. I wanted anyone who will attempt this hike to be aware that the fawn trail is marked with a white blaze with a red F on it. I included a picture, so future hikers can have this clarity. (Re: Ten Recommended Family Friendly Hikes, Issue 212) In light of the recent search and rescue of lost hikers, conducted by Chaverim of Rockland County, we’d like to clarify that when a route’s length is referred to as a “round trip” in the hiking guide featured last week, it means from beginning to end, with a U-turn in middle, with hikers returning the same way they came. “Full loop” signifies continuing on the trail, which may branch out onto other paths. Specifically regarding the Nordkop Mountain Hike from Route 59 in Suffern, it is important to note that to return from the second outlook point, hikers must return via the same route they came. Chaverim cautions that proceeding on the yellow trail is a hike of several hours and is

Though an article featured one family’s adventures, it was meant to reflect nothing more than their personal experiences, and we greatly regret that it reflected a lack of hiking safety. Here are a few safety tips: PROPER PACKING: Never leave for a hike without a proper knapsack equipped with enough water, charged cell phones, navigation devices, flashlights, emergency shelter, a first-aid kit and some ready-toeat, non-perishable nutrition options. PROPER PLANNING: Before leaving the 136 / THE MONSEY VIEW

only for experienced hikers who are well prepared. It is more than 6 miles to any other trail exit. Additionally, the hike consists almost entirely of a steep incline. The Monsey View

SAFETY MEASURES ARE IN ORDER (Re: On the Beaten Track, and hiking in general, Issue 212) I’m a Monsey native and a hiking enthusiast. Harriman State Park is my backyard, and I consider myself a trail expert in this arena. I hike countless miles weekly. I had a bad feeling after reading your coverage on trails. While I understand that you had no bad intentions, some of the messages of this article go against basic safety precautions that a hiker should be aware of. I want to highlight three pointers in particular that bothered me. 1. A disregard of proper footwear. 2. A message that a proper backpack is not necessary. 3. That it’s okay to go off the trail. Even I, a veteran hiker, will never veer off any trail, no matter the reason. There are many things that should’ve been communicated to prevent the need for search and rescues, including the importance of maps, a compass, free apps like AllTrails, phones, lights, chargers, contact people, etc. I think a follow-up article is critical to continue spreading the beauty of the great outdoors in a safe way. A Monsey Native THE MONSEY VIEW RESPONDS: In light of the feedback regarding the hiking topics addressed in last week’s issue, we would like to ensure that all hikers understand the safety measures they need to take before hitting the trails. As published last week, it is of utmost importance to never set out on a hike without a trail map of the area and knowledge of the exact route you’ll be following.

trailhead, acquire a map, consult with the park ranger, study it well and know your route. Always check the weather before heading out.

PROPER FOOTGEAR: Remember to change into proper

footwear, appropriate for the terrain, prior to setting out. HIKERS SHOULD NEVER HIKE ALONE, and always share their plans with someone outside of the hiking group before heading out. STAY ON TRACK. Read and follow all markers and do not veer off the trail. ALWAYS CHECK FOR TICKS after a hike.

The Monsey View has featured extensive coverage on trail safety and etiquette in issues 155 through 161. Feel free to access them on our website, or pick up back issues in our office. Here’s to safe and wholesome hiking excursions! The Monsey View

OUR D.C. GETAWAY (Re: Excursions: The Nation’s Capital, Issue 210) Last week we were considering different destinations for our summer getaway, and were not sure where we should go... Washington, D.C., came up as a good option, but, frankly, I wasn’t really in the mood for all that extensive research. On Wednesday I came home after a long day to see The Monsey View on my kitchen table with an entire D.C. itinerary, including food, minyan and lodging information. My entire vacation was planned out… All that remained to be done was book the hotel and pack the suitcases! And here we are! I send you this thank you from my hotel in Washington, D.C. Thanks for featuring the information just when we needed it. F. Wasserman

These conversations are taking place everywhere in our communities. Déjà vu? We had these conversations last summer and the summer before and the summer before that… I wake up the morning after a levayah in my neighborhood, a heaviness pressing on my chest. As I drive carpool, the children buckled in, listening to music, tears leak from the corners of my eyes and my heart twists in pain. I listen to a crisis intervention conference call providing guidance on how to deal with tragedy and trauma. But something within me isn’t satisfied. It writhes inside me until the thought bursts out. I want to know what the message is. Because there is a message; a screaming, wailing, hitting-us-on-the-head, slamming-usin-the-heart message. When tragedy strikes, we say: It’s not our job to conjecture, to say, “Oh, it happened because of this or because of that.” We can’t understand Hashem’s ways, and we can’t point fingers. But what if our Father is trying to send a message to us, summer after summer after summer; an agonizing, wrenching message, because we can’t hear it any other way? When there is a series of repeated events that has literally become a pattern, when the word summer means, along with anticipation of fun and recreation, a feeling of dread of impending tragedies, no one can deny that Someone is telling us something. I think it’s clear that more than a message to targeted individuals, this is a message to our nation as a whole, or at least to our frum communities. Nobody wants to say, “Maybe Hashem is sending these tragedies because of this particular thing,” because it feels wrong to “play prophet.” But perhaps maybe it’s wrong not to try to decipher the message, and maybe it’s okay to try to fix something in our communities that we know needs fixing… especially something

that bears strong connections to this time of year and to tragedy. Perhaps it’s time for our communities to reevaluate our attitude toward our Father’s tragedy and our nation’s tragedy. Maybe it’s time for us to reevaluate the way we mourn (or don’t mourn) the destruction of our Beis Hamikdash. Maybe it’s time for our camps and day camps to reevaluate their approach and itineraries for the Three Weeks and the Nine Days. Could it be that this mourning period — the Three Weeks, the Nine Days and Tisha B’Av — has come to be perceived as an obstacle in our pursuit of an ideal summer experience — an obstacle to be overcome or gotten around somehow — through distractions, through fun activities that are permissible (or that can be made permissible)? Could it be that Tisha B’Av has, chas v’shalom, become almost a happy day because it means that the enforced restrictions are almost over and tomorrow we can turn on blasting music, dance for joy, and set out on our much anticipated overnight trip? After all, the summer isn’t that long, and the “Three Weeks” take a nice chunk out of it and definitely mar the carefree and adventurous atmosphere we seek. My dear brothers and sisters: Clearly we cannot be carefree at a time when our Father is in mourning and when our nation should be in mourning. Please, as a nation, let us try to more seriously understand the destruction and the loss of something so great and so deep, so we can mourn it properly. Yes, we can, and should, still have happy, rejuvenating summer experiences, but let us not allow these to overflow into days when the Heavens are weeping. Yes, we can, and should, still keep our children productively occupied during the Nine Days, but in a subdued manner. Just as we wouldn’t have children throw a party in a shivah house, it’s okay for them to sense the sadness in the atmosphere during this time. Of course, it’s possible that this connection is unfounded. But these facts are true: We are mourning the shocking tragedies in our communities, and we are not properly mourning the Beis Hamikdash. Even if the two are not related, the latter is still a problem that needs to be corrected, and as a nation, we can only gain from working on this. S.S.

Should I be Concerned? Mothers’ worries addressed by Hamaspik’s OPWDD Evaluator Dr. Gampel

My Concern: It hurts me to speak about my four-year-old this way, but he comes across as a bit “weird.” He will say random comments — out of the blue — when someone is talking to him. He has a funny way of staring at things and doesn’t get any social cues whatsoever. Many people have told me that I’m making a big deal out of nothing, but I don’t think so. I have three other children, and they weren’t this way. Should I be concerned?

Concern or No Concern? As a concerned parent, you are bothered by your son’s “weird” behavior. From your letter it seems that there are two major areas of concern. The first is his non-response to questions. The second is his his staring and his lack of perception of social cues. When does this behavior occur? Is it all the time or only in specific situations? Perhaps he is feeling alone or the house is too hectic. He may withdraw in order to cope. You mentioned that he is the fourth and youngest child. It’s possible that he feels stressed by his inability to do things that the other children can. If that is the case, then giving him responsibilities and praise for doing the tasks will help with the social actions. How does he play with other children? Does he get along with them? Does he give these types of responses to them or only to adults? The more specific the area where he engages in responses that concern you, the less likely there is a skilll problem. Instead, it is related to the situation where he makes those responses When we look at a child’s responses to conversation, we generally ask a few questions. The first is: Did he understand the question? Was he responding to one of the words and not the whole context? Was he involved in imaginative play and therefore gave a response related to his play and not the question? Youngest children, especially in a busy household, may become very involved in imaginative play and therefore may give tangential responses. As the child gets into school and is surrounded by other children, the problem should disappear. When we analyze a problem, the questions we must always ask are: When does it occur? Are there better or more difficult periods? Is there a skill lacking that is impacting the response? As you answer these questions, you will know whether the issue is situational and behavioral and can be handled by giving responsibility to the child so he has more opportunities to feel confident — or whether there are skill issues that need remediation.

Parshas Re’eh By: Malka Schneps

After trying his hand at many business ventures, Shimon finally hit it big. Everyone talked about what a bracha it was that he was becoming so wealthy. The more Shimon’s bank account grew, the more his gaavah grew. As he grew busier with his business, he stopped learning with his evening chavrusa, then his lunch chavrusa, and ultimately, he stopped learning altogether. Shimon faithfully came to shul to daven three times a day, but while his body was there, his mind was in the numbers. He no longer felt the urgency to daven for success — after all, with his intelligence and hard work, he had made it all on his own. Now the question is, was Shimon’s success really a bracha? Reuven grew up in the lap of luxury, and his easy life continued into marriage, as his parents generously supported his growing family. Reuven learned full-time and schepped nachas as his family grew. Everyone spoke about how terrible it was when Reuven’s parents lost everything they had and suddenly were no longer able to support Reuven at all. In the blink of an eye, Reuven had no income and did not know where to find it. Wait, I surely do know, Reuven realized. Reuven took out his Tehillim and, with all his heart, recited, “Shir lama’alos esa einai el heharim, mei’ayin yavo ezri? Ezri mei’im Hashem… — A song of ascents; I lift my eyes to the mountains; from where will come my help? My help is from Hashem…” Reuven began davening like he had never davened

before, realizing just how completely he depended on Hashem for literally everything. Reuven’s emunah was strengthened and his avodas Hashem was completely transformed for the better. Was it really a “curse” that Reuven lost his financial support? This week’s parsha begins, “Re’eh Anochi nosein lifneichem hayom bracha u’klalah — See, I have set before you today a blessing and a curse” (Devarim 11:26). The Ohev Yisroel explains that everything could either be a bracha or the opposite, chalilah. Becoming wealthy could be a bracha, but if wealth takes a person away from Hashem, then it is a klalah. It says in Devarim (8:14) that a wealthy person’s heart could become haughty and cause him to forget Hashem. In that case, wealth is a klalah, rachmana litzlan. Likewise, it says in Koheles (5:12) that wealth could be bad for a person. On the other hand, while poverty could be a curse, if poverty brings a person to realize his dependence on Hashem and ultimately brings him closer to Hashem, then it is a bracha. About such a person, the Apter Rav writes, “He waits for Hashem to save him and he sees how everything Hashem sends him is with maaseh nissim, and he is connected to Hashem and he blesses Hashem for the good that He does.” So how do we know whether or not a situation in which we find ourselves is a bracha? The Ohev Yisroel notes that there is a siman by which we can determine

whether a given circumstance is a bracha or not, chas v’shalom. The parsha continues, “The blessing, if you will heed the commandments of Hashem… and the curse, if you will not heed the commandments of Hashem…” If the situation does not take a person away from Hashem and does not turn his mind from Hashem, then it is certainly a bracha. However, if a situation pulls a person back from serving Hashem, then he should daven that Hashem enable him to serve Him without any hindrances. The Ohev Yisroel explains that this is what the pasuk says: “See, I am giving you today bracha and klalah.” Every single thing could be either bracha or klalah. It all depends on how we are affected by it. You know it is a bracha if you continue to listen to Hashem, as it says, “The blessing, if you will heed the commandments of Hashem.” Then the pasuk continues, “And it is a klalah if you do not listen.” It is worth noting that, according to the Apter Rav, what defines a situation as “bracha” is not that it makes our physical lives easier or less painful, and what defines a situation as “klalah” is not that it causes us pain or sorrow. Rather, whether or not a situation is called bracha or klalah is determined by how it affects our service of Hashem. The Ohev Yisroel ends with a bracha: “Hashem should help us be zoche to serve Him with a joyful heart and a clear mind through shefa tovah and all good, kein yehi ratzon, amen.” So may it be for us.

When Chavie’s baby fell out of her highchair again, she stopped believing in miracles. Oh, not miracles exactly — but she stopped believing that one can live with hazards at home and rely on another miracle to survive them. “I’m not a businesswoman,” claims Chavie, manufacturer of the revolutionary Proctik products. “I am a mother.” A mother who cares for her children and is concerned for their safety. Chavie is blessed with a brood of active children who survived many near-misses as babies when they got up from their high chairs or tried climbing out. Mealtime was stress time: Sit the baby down, sit her down again, catch the baby dangling from the side of the chair, get that baby jumping on the high chair tray — now! Of course, she tried using a harness, but they were of no use, as her flexible kids easily squirmed their way out. Seven years ago, she’d had enough with living on the edge (of the chair). Naturally creative, she sought to come up with a solution. She had an idea, and got to work. Painstakingly, she sewed an absorbent vest — that would simultaneously serve as a

built-in bib — with side straps that would attach to the high chair. The result? She believed in miracles again. Amazingly and totally inconceivably, her little Suri remained safely strapped into her high chair, making a mess out of her sweet potato puree (which the bib happily accepted, and no, this amazing contraption does not make an angel out of your baby as of yet). Finally, a shred of calm in a busy household. Mommy is treated to the sheer luxury of ladling

soup without frantically holding on to the baby with her other arm. The now patented Bibbysitter has gone on to become a wild success, but not without its share of travails: It only hit the shelves after being remanufactured and redone and reproduced until it finally met its manufacturer’s perfectionist standards. “At Proctik we pride ourselves on perfectionism, honesty and quality,” Chavie says with obvious maternal pride (pun intended). Perfectionism is not a popular business strategy. In fact, Proctik unabashedly defies a good few of them. Common sense in business is to manufacture products at the lowest possible cost and sell for the lowest possible price to encourage sales. The savvy businessman may also purposely use low-quality materials so that products won’t last too long, thus having consumers keep coming back for a new one. Go ahead, tell Chavie she’s not cut out for business. Proctik’s products are made of top-quality, durable material and will keep in good shape for years. Because Chavie is a mother, a mother who wants every mommy and baby to enjoy safe, practical and hassle-free daily life.

ONCE A PROCTIK, ALWAYS A PROCTIK

It takes the discerning customer to handpick Proctik from the store’s selection. The manufacturing standards determine a higher price tag than your average product. But once you have it, there’s no going back. Chavie has wondered how a product such as a Bibbysitter has never existed before. Did no one ever notice that active babies climb out of their chairs? She discovered that, indeed, similar products have been on the market before, but each disappeared after a short while. Those products involved long and convoluted straps that had to be reattached each time you sat your baby down, and by the time you almost had all those strings sorted, the baby would already have wormed his way out of them and looked for the next interesting thing on the agenda. Mommy would try this once, twice, and then give up on this several minute pre-meal ritual,

104 / THE MONSEY VIEW / August 28, 2019 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484

figuring it would be simpler to just try to manage without it. The Bibbysitter is brilliant in both its simplicity and ingenuity. The easily washable bib-vest slips onto the baby like a dream, and with two clicks it attaches baby safely to the high chair. Baby still has some minimal wriggling space for comfort, but absolutely cannot get up from the chair. Bibbysitter attaches to high chairs, booster seats, shopping carriages, and regular chairs, so you’re always covered, even on vacation when you’re not equipped with a high chair.

BIBBIES FOR ALL Once the Bibbysitter took off so well, Chavie thought about how she could service other consumers whose babies don’t necessarily rise from their chairs, but who still struggle at mealtime with baby constantly pulling off their bib and staining the second t-shirt of the day. Proctik offers the perfect bib with no strings attached, literally: the D-ring grasping the overlapping Velcro closure prevents baby from yanking off the bib, and the adjustable neckline keeps those t-shirt edges perfectly pristine. The absorbent fabric happily soaks up all drips and dribbles, while the water-resistant lining keeps the clothing underneath dry and comfy. It’s only a bib, but it’s a perfect and brilliant one at that. As with all things, one good thing leads to an-

other. Chavie was so excited with this dynamic double fabric, she knew she just had to find another use for it. And thus the ultimate kitchen apron was born. Until now mothers had to take their pick: Use a towel apron to dry your hands but wet your clothes, or use a waterproof apron that keeps you dry but doesn’t do much else. Now you can have it all. Proctik’s lightweight, incredibly comfortable, height-adjustable apron offers you a plush velour outer fabric so you can dry your hands in a jiffy, while the inner lining won’t let the water through to your clothes. Don’t be surprised if you love to patchka in your kitchen again. Or, better yet, now’s the time to finally invite your daughter to join you in the kitchen, and with Mommy’s Helper kid-size apron, she won’t protest. Like their products, the manufacturing process at Proctik involves layers of thought. You no longer have to debate the benefits of one mediocre product over the other; Proctik offers you the complete package. Discover the wonder of practical living and get a Proctik product this week for 25 percent off. We knew you’re a Proctik mother.

Hoping to Better Serve the Community, the Nearly New Shop Opens Second Spring Valley Location The Nearly New Shop, known to most Monsey residents as the Metziahs Place, has opened its second location, making new and gently used clothing and other household items available to the public at bargain basement prices. A ribbon-cutting was held at the new Nearly New Shop location at 4 North Main Street in the heart of downtown Spring Valley on Thursday, August 22. Among those in attendance were Spring Valley Mayor Alan Simon, County Legislator Aron Wieder, Ku-

path Ezra’s Rabbi Feivel Mashinsky, community liaison Rabbi Yisroel Kahan, as well as representatives of Marquis Home Care and Fidelis. Opening a second store on North Main Street, in addition to the original Nearly New Shop location at 126 Maple Avenue, will give a greater number of people an opportunity to buy quality items at significant savings, explained Rabbi Kahan. The Nearly New Shop is open Sunday to Thursday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Friday from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. It is one of several services provided by Kupath Ezra, which also has a job center, and furniture and appliance exchanges.

Cuomo’s Plan to Allow New Yorkers to Vote on New License Plates Is Met With Skepticism He may have framed a statewide effort to choose a new license plate design as a contest, but Governor Andrew Cuomo is finding residents viewing his campaign with suspicion. Cuomo announced an online survey on August 19 that would allow residents to vote on their favorite design for the state’s official new license plates. The five proposed designs include two featuring images of the Statue of Liberty, one showing Lady Liberty’s torch, a fourth highlighting well-known landmarks spanning the state and the final one picturing

the new Tappan Zee Bridge, which bears the name of Cuomo’s father, former Governor Mario Cuomo. The plates, which will be avail-

able starting next April, will be issued to motorists whose license plates are at least ten years old when their registrations expire, at a cost

of $25. Those who prefer to keep their old license plate numbers will be able to do so after paying a $20 fee. Officials estimate that 3 million vehicles in New York have plates that are more than a decade old, which could net $75 million in new license plate fees. The search for the Empire State’s next license plate will also herald a new 10-year replacement program to ensure that all license plates are reflective and easily readable by new technology, including license plate readers, cashless tolling and red light cameras. "License plates are a symbol of who we are as a state, and New Yorkers should have a voice and a vote in its final design," said Cuomo. "As the lifespan of the old plates comes to an end and we develop new ones that are as easy to read as possible, I encourage all residents to take part in choosing this piece of our state's history." But not everyone is on board with the Cuomo plan, reported CBS News “It’s outrageous,” said State Senator David Carlucci. “This is the nickel and diming that chases people out of our state and it’s just unacceptable.” “It’s a cash grab,” added Senator John Flanagan. “It’s just another open insult to the taxpayers of New York. For what? Why are we doing this?”

CHAPTER NINETEEN

Recap: Rumors begin to spread regarding why the Stockhammer-Potolsky wedding has been pushed up and is being held in such an unusual venue. Eliyahu Potolsky’s sister badgers him to donate a huge amount of tzedakah to their needy aunt, since supposedly the Potolskys have so much money now. Yerushalayim

Bayla Stockhammer walked into Peretz’s empty room and opened the ironing board. How many shirts was she supposed to iron for him ahead of time? She’d be happy to iron all twelve of his new shirts, but in recent years, ironing had become increasingly difficult for her. She couldn’t do it sitting down, and when she stood to iron, it didn’t take long for her legs to begin protesting. If she could have spread the ironing over a few days, that would be one thing. But the wedding was in less than a week, and she had so many errands to do, and the aufruf would be taking place this Shabbos… Maybe she would just give everything to a professional ironing lady. She didn’t even plug in the iron. Instead, she went to find the most recent advertising circular that had arrived by mail. If she wasn’t mistaken, there was an ad every week for just this type of thing. The circular was waiting on the mail table in the hallway, and just as she found the ad and was about to make the call, the phone rang. “Hello, is this Mrs. Stockhammer?” “Yes, it is,” she replied, sinking into her favorite old armchair.

“This is Attorney Rosenblit. Your receipts have arrived, but we cannot file them because Peretz did not sign them.” “What?” “I called a day after our meeting to let you know that my client is requesting the signature of the chasan and kallah on each of the receipts.” “Ah, yes, now I remember,” she murmured. “I didn’t really like that directive, which is probably why I didn’t remember it.” “Could be.” He was very courteous, but remained firm. “I’m sending them back to you with a courier so Peretz can sign them immediately, and the courier will bring them back to me. All right?” “Fine… Oh, but one minute. Peretz is only coming home the day after tomorrow, on Friday. He’s in yeshivah now.” “So be in touch with me when he comes home, and we’ll set up a time for him to sign everything.” “Yes, okay.” Bayla almost slammed the phone down. He was really irritating, this lawyer. Too bad that Nesanel, her sister Mira’s son, wasn’t here now. He had been in the area yesterday to give a price quote to someone who wanted to renovate, and

had popped in to his aunt and uncle to say hello. He’d asked them how preparations for the wedding were coming along and, in his typical style, had peppered them with endless questions. Avraham had gotten fed up at one point and had gone to sleep, even before the visit was over, but Bayla had stayed up, hosting her young nephew with a seemingly bottomless reserve of patience. But then, when he’d asked her, “And did you try to find out if there really was a couple before the war named Peretz and Tziporah Genendel?” she, too, became exasperated. “Come on, Nesanel! How suspicious do you think we could be already?!” “As suspicious as is necessary. And believe me, Aunt Bayla, there is no such thing as being too suspicious. In my line of work I see it all the time. I work with people, and at first everyone seems serious and reliable — the electricians, the plumbers, the tile guys, all of them — and they all make promises from here to the moon. When I first started out as a contractor, I was young and naïve, and I kept falling for these promises. Eventually I learned not to believe anyone until I worked with them for at least five years.” He poured a third cup of Coke for himself. “Nu, and after five years?” “You don’t have to be as anxious. Not that it means that you won’t get swindled then, either, of course…” “Fine, so we didn’t have time to wait — certainly not five years! — and we’re just davening that this is all legit and honest.” She had already risen; the clock indicated that it was 12:15, but Nesanel hadn’t had a relationship with time since a very early age. Nothing new there. Finally he had left, but she’d spent the rest of the night tossing and turning with new fears about how they’d get swindled. By the time morning came, she’d made up her mind to go to Beit Hatfutsot and research by computer to see whether there had indeed been a couple named Peretz and Tziporah Genendel Korman. But Avraham had rejected the idea out of hand. “We’ve used the money already,” he said. “We’ve already bought the apartment. We’re too far into the process, Bayla. We can’t turn the clock back. And I’m not sure that I would have listened to Nesanel’s advice, even if he would have suggested it earlier.” “Why not?” “Because we inquired enough, in normal, acceptable ways. We don’t have to be oiber chachamim and go looking for problems where there probably aren’t any.” She had agreed with him, and as time went on and the dark night with its bad dreams faded into a distant memory, she realized how impractical and unwise her idea of searching for the deceased Korman couple was. Deep down she knew that too

“We don’t need your help. Especially since it doesn’t look like you’ll be able to help us out any more than the police.” “We have connections,” Rabbi Walkin said delicately. “So go and check with your connections. If you end up finding them, we’ll figure out who they belong to.” “I’d like to know who we’re talking about,” Rabbi Walkin said. “Two children, both rather cute; one has been with our institution since he’s three years old, and the other since he’s two.” “And are they indeed Jewish?” “Sir, a person your age should know that today, in the unified Czechoslovakia, there is no emphasis on things like religion and nationality anymore; it’s simply not relevant.” “Let’s leave aside what people my age are supposed to know, and discuss instead what we both know.” Rabbi Walkin smiled. “Jews or not?” “Of Jewish extraction.” “Extraction?” “They were baptized here.” His gaze darted rapidly from right to left. “Of course, before it was prohibited by law.” “And do you know who they are? Names, details… How did they get to you?” “One of them came… on his own, let’s just say. The second was brought here by his mother.” “And her name was?” Theodore shook his head. “I have no idea. I barely remember the incident. It’s possible she said something, but I didn’t attribute much importance to it.” The Jewish orphanage director rose to his feet. “What are the boys’ names, so we know who to look for?” “Gustav and Edo.” “Those are their original names?” “No. And don’t start asking me what their names were. I told you, I have no information about them.” “I see. Okay, we’ll see what we can do.” The man behind the desk weakly shook the proffered hand. “Have a good day.” *****

Rabbi Walkin entered his own orphanage and was surprised to see Janek Cohen in his office. “You were in such suspense to hear what I’d find out?” He shook his head in disapproval. “We agreed that you wouldn’t come here, didn’t we? It might arouse people’s suspicions… In any case, this Theodore either didn’t know anything, or didn’t want to say. He didn’t give me any new —” Janek cut him off. “That’s the lesser of our problems right now. The bigger problem is that Gustav has disappeared!” To be continued...

Governor Jay Inslee Withdraws From Race BACKGROUND: Washington Governor Jay Inslee has withdrawn from the Democratic presidential primary. In a statement to supporters, Inslee said that “It’s become clear that I'm not going to be carrying the ball. I’m not going to be the president, so I’m withdrawing tonight from the race.” Inslee ran a campaign

128 / THE MONSEY VIEW / August 28, 2019 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484

that focused on the dangers of climate change. He had proposed establishing a new office in the Justice Department tasked with prosecuting those who violate environmental laws and vowed to invest in clean energy. Inslee has also been an outspoken critic of the Trump administration. As governor, he sued the Trump administration over 30 times, most notably over the president’s “Muslim Immigration Ban” and the president’s declaration of a national emergency over border wall funding. However, Inslee’s singleissue candidacy failed to attract enough support, and his poll numbers were beneath the threshold required to qualify for the upcoming Democratic primary de-

bates. Ultimately, Inslee’s campaign did have an impact on other candidates in the Democratic field and helped force the issue of climate change to the forefront of the Democratic campaign. WHY IT MATTERS: Withdrawing from the race will

enable Inslee to focus his energy on running for reelection for a third term as governor of Washington State. Should Inslee win reelection, he will continue to work on a state level to curb carbon emissions. He, together with other like-minded governors, may yet emerge as a force for setting climate change policy on a state and local level.

Rep. Seth Moulton Withdraws From Race BACKGROUND: Massachusetts Representative Seth Moulton withdrew from the presidential race this past Friday. Rep. Moulton served four tours of duty in Iraq and focused his campaign on national security and issues involving veterans’ affairs. On the campaign, Moulton discussed his experiences in the Marine Corps and spoke about his personal struggle with post-traumatic stress disorder. Ultimately, his approach failed to resonate with Democratic voters, and he was unable to poll above 2 percent in any poll. WHY IT MATTERS: Moulton is facing a primary

challenge in his district. Pulling out of the primaries will allow him to concentrate his energies on running for reelection in his congressional district.

Rep. Joe Walsh Announces His Candidacy BACKGROUND: Former Illinois Congressman Joe Walsh announced his candidacy to challenge President Trump and seek the Republican nomination for the presidency. Walsh is a former one-term congressman elected in the tea party wave of 2010; he failed to win reelection in 2012. Walsh initially supported Trump’s candidacy. In 2016 he declared that if Trump lost, “I’m grabbing my musket.” However, Walsh has since soured on Trump, using his pulpit as a talk radio host to be a vocal critic of the president. Walsh has

a history of incendiary comments. He has apologized for many of them, but recently accused the president of being “a racial arsonist who encourages bigotry and xenophobia to rouse his base.” In announcing his candidacy, Walsh said, “I’m running because he’s (Trump) unfit; somebody needs to step up, and there needs to be an alternative.” Walsh said that he fears that Trump is leading the U.S. into recession and may well lead it into war. WHY IT MATTERS: Walsh is the second Republican to mount a 2020 challenge to President Trump. Unlike former Massachusetts Governor Bill Weld, who hails from the libertarian wing of the party, Walsh will be mounting his attack from the right. While it is highly unlikely that Walsh will be successful in his challenge to the president, he may be able to inflict severe damage on the president’s candidacy. Walsh will likely hammer President Trump in areas where the president has veered away from conservative orthodoxy and long-held Republican positions. He will attack the president on the ballooning national deficit and his tariff war with China. Depending on the effectiveness of his campaign, Walsh may be successful in sapping some energy and support from the president’s conservative base.

Recession Fears Weigh on Trump Campaign BACKGROUND: In recent weeks, many economic indicators have flashed recession warning signs. The inverted yield curve on treasury notes, the downward revision of the March and April jobs reports, and continued stock market volatility constitute a significant cause for concern for the president’s reelection campaign. On Friday the president lashed out at Fed Chairman Fed Powell, threatened additional tariffs on China, and said he would order privately held American companies to leave China. WHY IT MATTERS: President Trump does not have

the authority to order private businesses to leave China. However, his rhetoric is likely to rattle many who perceive danger in attacking the lynchpin of a free-market economy. Furthermore, the president has staked much of his presidency on the success of his economic policies and on the era of economic boom that he has presided over. Should the economic climate sour significantly, it may prove to be catastrophic for his candidacy.

Roll It Up By: Chana Rivky Spitzer Photo credit: EPIC Portraits 845-213-8865

School’s starting, and that means the summer’s almost over (when did it begin?) and that yom tov is around the corner. While you may prefer your food fresh, it’s always nice to know there are some ready side dishes in the freezer for “just in case.” These roll-up recipes freeze well and require minimal reheating, and can be rolled right out when needed.

Shlishke Rolls

INGREDIENTS Oil, for sauteing 2 large carrots ⅓ knob celery 1 large onion 6 medium or 4 large potatoes, peeled 8 eggs 4 cups flour (I replaced 1 cup with white whole wheat)

These rolls are a lot easier and faster to make than dropping endless little pieces of dough into boiling water. The vegetable filling adds visual interest as well as taste to an ordinarily bland food.

DIRECTIONS 1. Grate carrots, celery and onion, and saute in oil for 20 minutes to a half hour. Set aside. 2. Cook and mash potatoes, then add eggs, flour, salt and white pepper. Mix well. 3. Spread potato mixture onto two large sheets of parchment paper. Cover with sautéed vegetables. Roll up each sheet, jelly roll–style, and wrap with parchment paper, twisting ends tightly. 4. Fill roaster pan halfway with hot water. Place both rolls in pan and bake at 350° for about 1½ hours. Allow to cool, then discard water. Pour oil, crumbs, salt and spices into roaster pan. Toast in oven for about 20 minutes. 5. Place the rolls over the crumbs and turn to coat. Slice.

1½ tsp. salt ¼ tsp. white pepper ½ cup oil Bread crumbs or crushed matzah Salt, pepper and onion powder, to taste

136 / THE MONSEY VIEW / August 28, 2019 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484

Note: This makes a large batch. After slicing, return rolls to roaster pan. Create a space between every few slices and freeze. Once frozen, wrap well. You can now defrost as many — or as few — slices, as needed per meal, since it’s been frozen into small sections. Keep tightly wrapped when warming up to prevent rolls from drying out. To reheat on yom tov: Put shlishkes into aluminum pan and cover tightly. Place into larger pan filled with some hot water. Cover and heat on hot plate or blech.

QUICK-MIX DOUGH I used this dough recipe to create the following two dishes. This dough is extremely versatile, and I use it for many different things, from savory knishes to sweet cinnamon rolls. It gets mixed with just a fork and is soft enough to be patted flat without a rolling pin. The recipe can be multiplied as many times as needed.

INGREDIENTS 2 cups flour

⅓ cup oil

2 tsp. baking powder 1 egg ½ tsp. salt

2 tsp. vinegar

2 T. sugar

½ cup hot water

DIRECTIONS 1. Sift dry ingredients into a mixing bowl. 2. Beat egg, oil and vinegar with a fork. Pour into bowl along with hot water. Mix with a fork to combine. Dough will be soft and slightly sticky. If it feels too sticky, add 1 to 2 tablespoons flour. Note: If you multiply this recipe 3 times, use only 2 eggs (and not 3) because the dough may be too sticky.

Onion-Mushroom Rolls These are great for those meals where you want to serve a side dish that’s lighter than the standard greasy knish. They don’t require an oven to be rewarmed — another big plus on yom tov.

QUICK-MIX DOUGH Recipe on previous page

ONION-MUSHROOM FILLING 2–3 T. oil 2 large onions, diced 1 red pepper, diced 1 large can mushrooms, drained and diced ½ tsp. salt ⅛ tsp. white pepper

140 / THE MONSEY VIEW / August 28, 2019 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484

DIRECTIONS 1. Saute onions and peppers in oil until soft. Add mushrooms, salt and pepper. Cook for a few more minutes. 2. Prepare the Quick-Mix Dough. On a parchment paper– lined cookie sheet, pat dough into a large rectangle. Cut dough in half lengthwise. 3. Spread half of vegetables down center of each dough. Fold over both sides of dough, pinching to seal. Flip rolls over, seam side down. 4. With a sharp knife, cut each roll into 10 slices, cutting through top layer of dough only. 5. Bake at 400° until lightly browned, about 20 to 30 minutes.

Apple Cinnamon Rolls Individual apple turnovers take time and patience — and an oven to warm them up in. These shortcut rolls are done in no time, freeze well, and can even be served without reheating. This can be served as dessert, too! Serve warm with apple and honey ice cream (from Yorgood) for a great flavor combo.

Come autumn and that unmistakable nip in the air, and apples is a large part of the seasonal theme. It speaks of school, is the most recognized Rosh Hashanah siman, and is also the fruit that reaches its prime at the cusp of fall. About a century ago, in the 1920s, a New Hampshire farmer had a brainstorm — to bring tourists from Boston to his orchard, where he’d allow them to pick their own apples in the fresh air and sunshine. With orchards abounding across the fruited plain of the U.S., his idea immediately took off, and farmers across the country started doing the same. From there, farming fun picked up, bringing hayrides, corn mazes, ready-to-eat foods, vegetable and fruit picking, and other fun farm activities. These days, as the number of farms dwindle across the United States, these activities enable the upkeep of old family farms by making their land that bit more lucrative in an era where developers are more than eager to snatch up the stretching acres for a profitable sum. Here’s a list of apple-picking orchards, some with additional fall fun options, to visit this autumn. It’s always a good idea to call ahead of time to verify cost (or ask about them; some will only divulge prices to interested customers) and hours — and to hear what’s available for picking on a given day. Happy picking!

Most apple picking starts in time for September.

APPLE PICKING AND STORAGE TIPS • Most modern apple orchards have dwarf trees that are very close to the ground — even a three-year-old can pick an impressive yield. • Apples ripen from the outside of the tree toward the center, so the apples on the outside of the tree will ripen first. • Texture, not color, is the most accurate indicator of an apple’s ripeness. Select crisp, firm, bruise-free fruit. • If possible, ask the farmer which variety is ripe. He will know because it is calculated from the number of days since the trees flowered. • Picking apples directly from a tree is easy. Roll the apple upward off the branch and give a little twist; don’t pull straight away from the tree. Don’t shake the trees or branches. • As you pick, try to leave the stem on the apples; they will stay fresh longer this way. • Apples ripen a lot faster at room temperature than when they are refrigerated. • Don’t wash apples until just before using to prevent spoilage. • You know the saying “One bad apple spoils the whole bunch”? It’s true. A bad apple gives off ethylene, which will spoil the apples around it. So remove bruised fruits and eat them first. Potatoes also release ethylene, so never store apples and potatoes in close proximity to each other.

It’s not for nothing that the apple is the official fruit of New York. As the secondlargest apple-producing state in the country — Washington State ranks first — New York is home to almost 700 commercial apple growers. While crab apples are native to the U.S., apples for eating first came to the Americas with the Pilgrims in the 17th century, and the first apple tree was planted by early settlers in present-day Boston in 1625. With apples being some 390 years old in this country, it is quite fascinating that there is an apple orchard that has been continuously farmed by eleven generations of one family for the past 307 years — and it’s right nearby. Nestled in the hills of Pomona, at the corner of Routes 45 and 202, lies the Orchards of Concklin, the oldest family-owned business in New York — and probably even the oldest family fruit farm in all of the United States. The Concklin family, “the members of which for more than 150 years spelled the name Concklin regardless of how others wrote it,” as the American Genealogist wrote some 100 years ago,

first set down their roots on American soil in the 1630s, hailing from Nottington, England. But they did not seem to stay rooted for long, as over the greater part of the next century, members of the family traveled from the Pilgrim community in Massachusetts to Rhode Island, and then across the water to Long Island, and then eventually back over the Long Island Sound to Eastchester in Westchester County. In 1711, when the Hudson was still a barrier to the area opposite Westchester yonder the river, Nicholas Concklin took a sailboat across the Hudson from Westchester to Haverstraw. He docked his boat in the river and started to trek inland in

na and the surrounding areas became populated. In 1945, the Orchards of Concklin was officially established, and customers were welcomed to come enjoy each season’s offerings. And it’s been going strong since, one of the remaining handful of farms in Rockland County. In 2012, a tricentennial took place on the farm, celebrating 300 years of family farming and the preservation of this natural gemstone in an area where commercialization and development has uprooted so much of the pastoral charm it once boasted. As the sweet autumn scent of ripening fruit wafts through the air, the side of the road leading to the farm accommodates a lineup of parked cars, as visitors from all over the area come to gather the fruits that grow on soil rich with history.

search of a suitable place for his homestead. On the 400acre tract he purchased (Lot No. 1 of the north moiety of the Kakiat Patent), he settled down to farm the land. The first Concklin apple trees were planted in 1712. Concklin also named the area’s post office Pomona, after a Latin word for fruit, for the abundance of orchards in the area. The farm remained in the Concklin family ever since — eleven generations have thus far tilled its soil. Tenaciously upkeeping the growth as the Revolutionary battles brushed past the area, as the Civil War raged through the country, as the USA was struggling with the destitution of the Great Depression (they did lose a large mountainous tract during this era, originally purchased so they could make a profit from the sale of its wood), the fruits kept growing and the dairy production kept moving. Over the years, however, much of the original 400 acres under Concklin ownership was lost to other pursuits, as every generation would sell a portion of the estate when the money was needed. In the area of the original farm, parks were established, shopping malls constructed and, of course, suburban housing was developed as Pomo-

THE KAKIAT PATENT Land patents are tracts of land typically granted to one or more persons by sovereignty. In Colonial times they were granted by the British Crown to proprietors, joint owners who’d survey and subdivide the properties and then convey the individual allotments. Natural treasures (like gold and silver mines) in all Colonial patents were reserved for the king. The Kakiat Patent was part of a vast tract of over 35,000 acres granted in 1696 by the Province of New York, in

the name of the king of England, to two enterprising individuals by the names of Daniel Honan and Michael Hawdon. These two fellows then subdivided it into a north and south moiety with a number of lots in each. Lot No. 1 was where the Concklins settled. Called “Kackyacteweke” by the Indians, the term was soon shortened and simplified to “Kakiat,” by which it was thereafter known and perpetuated.

The Kakiat Patent encompassed a large part of Rockland County, including Monsey, Spring Valley, Pomona, Pearl River and some land in present-day Bergen County — but incidentally, not Kakiat Park, the area which was under the Harris Patent. In fact, when the Erie Railroad first passed through Monsey, the original marker hanging on the platform read “Kakiat,” before it was changed to “Monsey.”

How’s it by you? Backpacks filled since the first day of vacation with sharpened pencils and labeled crayons? A mad scramble on day before orientation to find the school supplies list? Or how about a quiet morning, coffee mug in hand, spent reminiscing about those long-gone hectic days of signing homework and rushing to buses? Armed with a list of four questions, a phone book, and a laptop with which to transcribe the answers I’d receive, I set out to complete my assignment: reaching out to random residents of the greater Monsey area to get a glimpse of how backto-school happens in their homes. I flip my phone book open and point a finger at a random spot on the page. My first phone call is to Mrs. I., who apparently isn’t home to take the call. My finger dives straight back into the phone book, and I dial again. Mrs. Greenwald from Spring Valley seems a bit taken aback by the call, yet patiently listens to my question: “Is there anything special

170 / THE MONSEY VIEW / August 28, 2019 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484

that you do for your kids in honor of the first day of school?” She responds that she makes sure that her daughters look especially put-together on the first day, with their hair neat and a headband in place. Good luck, Greenwald girls! R.R., another resident of Spring Valley, shares that she prepares both a special breakfast and snack for the first day of school, though she did not yet plan what it would be this year. She also lovingly writes notes with messages such as, “Thinking of you...” or “Hatzlacha on your day!” which she secretly slips into her children’s snack bags. What an inspiration! I then reach Mrs. T. from Monsey and ask her, “What does your bus schedule look like in the morning? Do you wait outside with your kids or not?” Mrs. T. responds that since she no longer has babies or toddlers in the house, her mornings are calm and not as hectic as they’d been in the past. At this point in life, her older children are out early in the morning, and she no longer regularly waits out with her two younger boys and elementary school– aged daughter for buses, but she’ll do so on the first day of school. I would venture to guess that the T. girls are great students, since Mrs. T. shares that they love playing Boggle in The Monsey View, have been runner-up several times — and have even been the grand winner. Next I introduce myself to Mrs. Rosenberg from Spring Valley, who admits that, no, she does not do anything special in honor of the first day of school. And since she has such a common name and won’t be identified, she allows me to share that info with all you readers. Wow! Out of the first five callers, I have received four responses. I want to break into a victory dance, but restrain myself — I’m not even nearly done yet. Then, in succession, Mrs. H. declines to answer a question, since she does not have school-age children, as does Mrs. B., whom I try next. Then I reach Mrs. R., and based on her youthful voice, it is not surprising to learn that her children do not yet attend school. It’s a good thing I didn’t break into a jig earlier. It would have been a dance celebrated prematurely. Then I chat with Mrs. S. from Chestnut Ridge, who no longer has school-age children in the house. Furthermore, her school years go back over 40 years in the past, so she has trouble retrieving a memorable incident from those days when I prompt her for one. She does share, however, that a major difference between her school days and today’s education system is that there were no computers then — or anything technological that is currently part of the standard curriculum. I reach another S. family, whose school-age daughter answers the phone and passes it on to her mother, who seems skeptical and asks to be skipped. After my assurance that her full name won’t be

printed, M.R. gladly replies to my query of, “Do you have a designated time for homework in your house? How much of your help is required?” She responds that there is no designated time for homework, and that her children are fairly independent and her help is rarely necessary. After ending the call, I soon regret not having asked for any tips on how to achieve that. Doing homework is not my favorite way to parent. I make a couple of unsuccesssful calls before finally reaching Mrs. K. from Spring Valley, who shares with me a bit about her morning bus schedule. Her girls and boys leave in two shifts each, four buses in total. She waits outside with her preschoolers and sends her elementary-age children out with their older siblings. Mrs. S. from Monsey, who no longer has young children in the house, seems to still have a pretty hectic life, and she declines sharing a school memory since she is too busy. I ask Malki from Monsey if she does anything special in honor of the first day of school. Malki answers that she sends off her children with a prayer on her lips that they should have a successful year and good teachers. This year she is a bit more apprehensive about sending off her daughter, since it is the first time that she won’t be attending orientation with her beforehand, and will have to wait until the end of the school day to hear who will be teaching her! Here’s to wishes of a fantastic school year with wonderful educators! After speaking to Malki, it seems my luck has run out for the moment. I reach a fax machine, a child

172 / THE MONSEY VIEW / August 28, 2019 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484

whose mother isn’t home, and an answering machine, in that order. I’m therefore excited to hear an adult answer the next phone call. Mrs. S. from Spring Valley actually heads out to school on her own, since she is one of the devoted teachers who educate our children. I ask her if she does anything special for the first day of school. She responds that she’s still quite busy with summer, so she has no solid plans yet. However, she will be sending one kindergarten daughter off to school, and the first day is a very exciting event. She plans to dress her daughter in a new outfit for the occasion. Growing up, her mother took “first day of school” pictures of the children when they were all ready to board the bus, and she is following this family tradition. Smile to the camera! I reach Mrs. D. from Wesley Hills, who seems amused that she was randomly chosen to answer a question for the paper that she so adores. I ask her about her morning schedule, and Mrs. D. admits to not being a morning person, and that catching buses is therefore a challenge for her. Her two children leave on the same bus at 7:55, and end up riding it to school only 40 percent of the

time. And the rest of the time, when they miss it? Mrs. D. says she’s grateful that they have a car… When I question Mrs. Werczberger from Monsey about homework in her house, she answers that in theory, there is a designated time for homework: as soon as the kids come off the bus. However, it ends up dragging on as an all-day affair until it’s time to head to bed. Her children need lots of help with their homework; they are still young and can’t do it on their own. H.T. from Monsey answers my question about her morning schedule by sharing that she has four children, all of whom attend the same mosed. However, they will be leaving on four different buses to four different buildings this year. She waits outside with her preschool children, and the older ones wait out with a group of neighbors. H.T. also shares that she lives on the third floor, and that this past year, by the time she waved off three kids onto three buses within a half hour, she felt that she’d done her workout for the day! Next I reach Mrs. K. from Monsey, who tells me that her children are all married, but she’d gladly share her experiences of the past. When Mrs. K. popped fresh popcorn for her children to take along to school, she would always send an extra bag for the devoted bus drivers. How thoughtful! I’m not surprised that my next interviewee, R.K., also lives in main Monsey since, oddly, the answers seem to be coming in clusters…. Three people with no school-age children in the house, two people who don’t answer, and then five people who seem eager to answer,

one after the other. R.K. does not remind her kids to do homework since she believes that children need to learn to shoulder responsibility. She will fully support them and help with whatever necessary, but never take over the burden. R.K. feels that children of the previous century needed to rise to the call of the rooster and attend to the needs of the cows and chickens, which empowered them to grow up to be responsible adults. Since our generation looks so different, this is the least she can do to ensure her children grow up to be independent, mature adults. C.R. from New Square shares her morning bus routine: Of her three children whom she sends out in the morning, two leave on the same bus. The two buses arrive ten minutes apart, and she has everyone ready be-

174 / THE MONSEY VIEW / August 28, 2019 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484

fore the first one. Mornings are rush hour in her home, where every second counts until the final exit out the front door. Can’t we all relate? It takes me four no-response phone calls until I finally reach Mrs. Klein from Monsey. She says that no, she does not have school-age children in the house. I ask her how homework was done in her household when her children were growing up, and although she doesn’t remember specifics, she says that she does not remember homework ever being stressful, despite having had a house full of youngsters. A sweet thought that she shared was that after the children get married, you forget the hardships, and only hang on to memories of the good times. That’s one thought I want to be reminded of on a daily basis.

Mrs. F. from Monsey, whom I call next, takes the time off her busy schedule to tell me about her morning buses. Currently, she waits out with her five-year-old. Her lower-elementary daughter rides the same bus as her high school daughter, saving her the need to wait out with her as well. Her teenage son leaves before she wakes up, and her two preteen sons wait for their bus on their own. Although it’s a pretty relaxing schedule right now, Mrs. F. reminisces about her bus schedule a decade ago, when she lived at a different address. Since her front door faced one street, and her address was on a different street, she needed to wait at her legal address at two different times for her two children using East Ramapo transportation. It was a five-minute trek from her door, and if the bus ran a little late, she would miss her next bus, which stopped at her front door. I reach C.R. from Airmont, who shares her take on homework. She does not set a designated time for homework, and her girls’ school greatly encourages the children to do their homework independently from second grade and on. Therefore, she is not much involved in the process. Before wrapping up my mini interviews, I call one final phone number. Shaindy from Spring Valley finds it hysterically funny that she was called about a school-related question. “I’m a great-grandmother,” she declares in good humor. I listen, spellbound, as she relates snippets of her school days. Shaindy attended Torah Academy of Minnesota led by Rabbi Eisemann. The school was very different, she says, than the schools she imagines the readers of The Monsey View attend today; 85 percent of the students, herself included, were not frum. Her most memorable teacher was Rabbi Larry Borenstein, z”l. He would bring the studies down to level and make each subject relevant to the students and their interests. Oh, how he taught! Rabbi Borenstein would build a sukkah on school grounds, and the students would come and shake his lulav and esrog there. He made his students really want Hashem in their lives. Shaindy would count sefirah for the sake of being able to tell Rabbi Borenstein, “Ich hub getzeilt sefirah.” Just a few minutes after our phone call comes the sad news that the wife of Rabbi Eisemann, Mrs. Naomi Eisemann, a”h, has passed on. Mrs. Eisemann was the kindergarten teacher at the Torah Academy. She gave the kids so much and instilled in them a deep love for Yiddishkeit. Shaindy shares that she still sings the heartfelt songs that she was so lovingly taught by Mrs. Eisemann at the age of four and a half. Shaindy shares her amazing memories l’ilui nishmas these special individuals who so devotedly planted the seeds of Yiddishkeit in the young ones in Minnesota: Rabbi Eisemann (‫)מאיר אהרן בן חיים‬, z”l, Rabbi Larry Borenstein (‫)יהודה לאומי בן חיים שלום שמחה‬, z”l, and Mrs. Naomi Eisemann (‫)נחמה טשארנא בת משה‬, a”h. Apple Varieties Apples are the second most popular fruit in the county, immediately following bananas. And the proof is in the pudding — or applesauce! Apple trees are grown in all 50 states, and cultivated for commercial sale in 36 of them.

Nowadays, the number of apple varieties grown is estimated at a whopping 7,500, with 2,500 varieties grown in the U.S. Red Delicious apples seem to be most favored; this variety is the most commonly grown in the country.

Apples are known for their many health benefits, some of which are improved memory, mental alertness and general electrical stimulation of the brain. They also provide dietary fiber, flavonoids and antioxidants, the last of which is mostly contained in the peel.

You’ve probably seen apples floating in water. This is possible because 25 percent of an apple is actually air...

Apple Trees Apple trees can be grown farther north than many other fruit trees, because they bloom late in the season. This means the chances of frost damage are much lower, even in cooler climates.

Apple tree seedlings will produce their first fruit approximately five to eight years after being planted, though dwarf trees will produce fruit two to four years after being planted. Dwarf trees are favored by apple growers, both for their faster maturity and for their more practical size.

When apple trees are ready to produce their fruit, flower blossoms appear on their branches. The buds start out pink, and slowly fade to white.

Biologists say that to produce one single apple, the tree continuously uses energy from 50 leaves.

Interestingly, apple trees are part of the rose plant family. The rose family also includes the trees and plants bearing peaches, plums, apricots, pears, cherries, raspberries, strawberries and almonds.

Apple trees can be expected to live for about 100 years, or even longer if not damaged by harsh weather or animals coming by for a snack.

European immigrants were the first to introduce apples to the country. The seeds accompanied them across the ocean, and once on firm ground once again, they were planted and carefully cultivated. Colonists relied very much on this fruit, in both their raw and dried states. They also enjoyed their apple cider, a popular drink at the time, made even more necessary since drinking water wasn’t always safe.

While we all know we live in the Big Apple, the source for this ubiquitous nickname is not clear. As per the findings of etymologist Barry Popik, most theories of how this name came to be are false, but Popik did manage to locate the earliest mention of the term in a book printed in 1909. As author Edward S. Martin writes, “Kansas is apt to see in New York a greedy city... It inclines to think that the big apple gets a disproportionate share of the national sap.” Not so complimentary, then…

“Every particle attracts every other particle in the universe with a force…” Or so Newton said when he discovered gravity. Legend says that the English physicist came to this conclusion after witnessing an apple fall from its tree and deciding that there must be some force that prodded the apple to no longer remain at rest.

Some people love Granny Smith apples, and some prefer sweeter varieties, but what most people don’t know is that there really was a Granny Smith. She was an Australian grandma by the name Maria Ann Smith, and she was the first to cultivate this variety of apple.
