I’m dreaming of that perfect wig. I just can’t seem to fınd the one… know? Whatever. It’s hard to explain. I need a wig that is seasonal yet withstands the seasons. Does that make sense? I love a natural look. It’s so up-to-the-minute. But I need a little help pulling it off. I need a good wig. A wig that can hold its own. For a nice while. Color is another thing. I hate this fake colored look. I want my color trendy. But I

I want something I could wear to weddings. Simchos. Something that would hold a curl. I need the volume. Dimension. Depth. But sometimes I want to wear it super-flat and casual and straight. I know I am contradicting myself. But I’m a versatile person. I wear my wigs like I wear my moods. So, like today I just wanted to pin up my wig in a messy top bun, but I have a wedding tonight and my mother-in-law will be there. I need to look decent, y o u

want it to be me. Need it to be me. For like a long time. I’m not buying a wig every day. I told my husband it’s like when he picks the color of the car we lease. It’s a big decision. He got it. Styles change. I want to be able to go with the flow. So not too straight. I need good quality hair that could withstand some waves, crimps, curls. Whatever is up next. But I need it sleek now. I love the sleek for now. Don’t get me started on fit. My hairline is difficult. I have a funny shape head, whatever. I wear my wigs 24/7. Literally. I can’t shlep it here and then there. It needs to fit. Like a glove. Like a really g o o d . wig.

We get you! We will customize your dream wig for you! ‫גת רב‬-‫בהכשר של הרב ברוך וידיסלבסקי ראש כולל יד רמ"א קרית‬ ‫ומו"צ באשדוד שהם נקיים מכל חשש תקרובת לעבודה זרה‬

are a current donor, you can now make a really big difference in the budget of the yeshiva. A group of benefactors has offered to double - above and beyond what they already give - any donation from donors who have not contributed in the past year, or current donors who increased their annual commitment. As the yeshiva has experienced significant growth recently, it has become necessary to expand its donor base. AROUND THE YEAR

(Re: Fit for a King, Issue 163) I want to let you know that I clipped last year’s round challah guide, and I used it when baking challos this week. The instructions were so clear, and the challos were so enjoyable to make! I’m also excited about your new Boro Park edition. I always used to clip your recipes and send them to my mother and sisters in Brooklyn, and now they’ll have their own. Hatzlacha and thank you! ONE NUMBER

I just finished reading the article describing what the Boggle game looks like behind the scenes. I don’t even play Boggle in The Monsey View, but I had to drop you a note to tell you how much I enjoyed the article! It was really a cute and enjoyable read. Unboggled

Dear Boggle Team, As a rather amused reader of your Boggle article so aptly titled “Boggled,” I found myself grinning, nodding and chuckling as you reminded me of the experiences I watched the Boggle team go through as they ogled the Boggle submissions every week. As I finished reading, I recalled one incident that begs to be mentioned: When Boggle was still in its infancy, winners were announced through publication of their name and telephone number. Oh, what a (nervous) laugh we had when a Boggle contestant called our office

to contend that the published winner was not the winner at all... It was her! She insisted. And to prove that she was the rightful winner, she’d actually called the winner whose name had been published, and had demanded a definition of all the words submitted — no dictionary use allowed! And we promptly began to X out digits in the winner’s number. Lesson learned! It’s all in a day’s work… Ruchy Reese

It was interesting to me that the Boggle article was published the week after I vehemently argued about the Boggle game being so unfair. Coming from a solid Englishspeaking background and education, and never having heard the likes of these words, I always wondered how The Monsey View has never picked up on the issue. And besides for the cheating, I, as a parent, would be horrified to know that my child would get words straight out of a dictionary! G.G.

YOUR VOICE Dearest Mechuteniste, I’d like to wish you a hearty mazel tov upon your daughter’s recent marriage, and also bring something to your attention. I arrived at your daughter’s chasunah rather early, before the kabbalas panim began, as I had another close family simcha that night. After wishing everyone mazel tov, I

90 / THE MONSEY VIEW / September 11, 2019 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484

sat down with some fruit from the smorgasbord and watched something that was (in my opinion) both inappropriate as well as very hurtful. I decided to write to you about it because I am sure that due to the intense emotions the marriage of a child evokes, you obviously didn’t realize that something wasn’t right. You had the photographer take pictures of your entire family, bli ayin hara, then of the einiklech, kein yirbu, and then you had him take a “sistersonly” picture. That, in and of itself, is not considerate to your daughters-in-law, who are now your children via marriage, but that wasn’t it. You stood and watched as the photographer spent almost twenty minutes taking one (silly, if I may) pose after the next of only your daughters, while your daughters-in-law stood around watching, apparently uncomfortably. I can say this much: I’ve made a couple of chasunas myself, and never would I allow a photo to be taken of only my biological children. My daughters-in-law and sons-inlaw are all my children. Their children are all my grandchildren, I love them all dearly and they all get equal treatment. I shudder to think of how your prejudice toward your daughters reflects on your relationship with your grandchildren. Pardon me for commenting, but I really do care about you and your children. Hoping to join you at your simchas in the future, A Spectator

Should I be Concerned? Mothers’ worries addressed by Hamaspik’s OPWDD Evaluator Dr. Gampel

My Concern: My six-year-old son is super sensitive. He will start shouting when the house gets noisy and will throw a full-blown tantrum if something I’m cooking smells too strongly or if I prepare him clothing that he doesn’t like. And worst of all, if someone comes even close to his space, he becomes completely out of hand. To put it mildly, he definitely has sensory issues.

Should I be concerned? Certainly a child of six years old should be able to tolerate smells and sounds without losing control. We therefore need to figure out why displaying such behavior. Are these isolated occurrences, or are these symptoms pointing to something bigger? Is he doing it for attention? When did these responses and reactions start? Obviously, before making a diagnosis, it’s important to know whether he only recently started exhibiting such extreme behavior, or if he has always reacted this way. Once these variables are determined, it is then possible to figure out what the nature of the difficulty is. If it is entirely sensory, then we’d slowly help him learn to tolerate the sounds of the environment. If he does not know how to regulate his own reactions, then we’d need to teach him methods of self-control and relaxation. If there are issues related to family and attention, then we’d need to work with him on developing better social skills. With a proper evaluation we would be able to determine the right treatment and services that would help your son and your family on a daily basis. To learn more about evaluations and services available to mainstream children, call: 845-503-0200. Ezra S. Gampel, Ph.D. is a psychologist who works with a wide variety of populations. He specializes in evaluating and treating children and adolescents. He is a professor of psychology at Touro College.

Should I be Concerned? Mothers’ worries addressed by Hamaspik’s OPWDD Evaluator Dr. Gampel

My Concern: Everyone in the family walks on eggshells around Shloimy. He throws the nastiest tantrums ever! He will be turning eight years old next month, and I thought he would’ve outgrown it by now. I did notice that his behavior gets worse on very hectic days, like on a yom tov or when we travel.

Concern or No Concern? Shloimy has effectively gained control over the entire family with his tantrums. Likely even when you try to ignore or fight him, he is willing to escalate the situation until it becomes too much to handle. How does he behave in school? How does he get along with classmates? These two questions are very important, because it lets you know if the problem is situational ( that is when he is at home or with family) or more general to all places. If it’s only with the family, then we are dealing with a child who has the ability to control himself when necessary but has learned to manipulate the home situation. Guidance in setting up a behavioral program with reinforcers and costs for noncompliance will likely work. If the problem is now occurring in all situations, then the difficulty is likely one related to Shloimy. Are there language issues that make it difficult to follow social conversation that tends to be nonliteral? Are there attention issues? Does Shloimy recognize that what he is doing is inappropriate? Shloimy may be having school learning difficulties, but they have not yet emerged. Until the fourth grade, learning is based on memory and not analysis, which means Shloimy can therefore do well through the use of his memory. Even though he is doing well, he realizes that he is just hanging on. As school becomes more difficult, there may be a greater level of acting out at home due to frustration in school. If that is so, an evaluation would be highly recommended. To learn more about evaluations and services available to mainstream children call: 845-503-0200 Ezra S. Gampel, Ph.D., is a psychologist who works with a wide variety of populations. He specializes in evaluating and treating children and adolescents. He is a professor of psychology at Touro College.

Parshas Ki Seitzei By: Malka Schneps

Mendy drove around the block looking for a parking space as the time for davening came near. Finally, desperate to make Mincha, he parked in front of someone’s empty driveway. I’m not blocking anyone, because there’s no car there, he reasoned. And Mincha doesn’t take so long. I’m sure I’ll be gone before they come home. Mendy was pleased to make his minyan and pulled his car out as soon as davening finished. He returned to work, and by the time the work day was over, he’d long forgotten about the parking issue. He was quite hungry, and as he drove home, he looked forward to sitting down to a warm meal. Finally, pulling up to his house, Mendy was horrified to find that someone had parked in front of his driveway! He looked up and down the street, searching for a parking spot on his block, but there wasn’t a single empty space to be found. Grumbling to himself, he drove away to look for parking elsewhere. How inconsiderate of that person to block my driveway! Whether it was for a minute or an hour, he reasoned, they should not have blocked me at all. It says in this week’s parsha, “Lo yih’yeh l’cha b’chischa even va’aven gedolah u’ketanah — You shall not have in your pouch two different measures, one large and one small” (Devarim 25:13). There was a time when items in a market were weighed on a two-sided balancing scale, where the weighing stone would be placed on one side, and the product would be placed on the other side. If a person

104 / THE MONSEY VIEW

wanted to buy a pound of flour, a one-pound stone would be placed on one side of the scale, and flour would be added to the other side until the two sides of the scale were balanced. The person would then pay the price for one pound of flour. However, a dishonest merchant might keep two measuring stones: one that truly weighed one pound, and another that was stamped as one pound, but really weighed less. The unsuspecting customer would then pay the price for a full pound of flour, but would receive less than a full pound in return because of the inaccurate measure. Thus, not only is it against the Torah to conduct business dishonestly by using an inaccurate measure; it is against the Torah to even possess an inaccurate measure. Sometimes in life we use one set of measures when deciding that it is permissible for ourselves to act in a certain way, but we use a different set of measures when judging the behavior of others. In the story above, Mendy kept two sets of measures: one for himself, by which it was fine for him to block another person’s driveway, and a second set for others, by which it was inconsiderate for another person to block his own driveway. We are all susceptible to the temptation of keeping double measures, which are also known as double standards. Whether it is how we feel or how we speak about another person, how we

treat them, or how we judge their actions, we must endeavor to keep one true standard for ourselves as well as for others. This is true whether they are similar to us or different, whether they are a relative or friend versus a stranger, whether they are from our community versus another, be they from in-town or from out-of-town, etc. Furthermore, we should not even possess the inaccurate measure; we must make sure to not only treat others equally, but also to think of them equally. We are now moving through Chodesh Elul, proceeding toward Rosh Hashanah, when our deeds will be weighed on a scale. What measure will Hashem use to weigh our merits? The Gemara says, “It is with the measure by which a person measures others that he himself is measured” (Megillah 12b). Those who keep a double standard in judging others are actually doing themselves a disservice, for Hashem will judge them in accordance with how they judge others. If a person used an inaccurate measure in business dealings or perhaps even in their interpersonal relationships, then that person’s merits may be measured too small as a result. On Rosh Hashanah, our merits and actions are important and make a big difference in our own judgment. May we all judge one another favorably and be zoche that Hashem judge us favorably in turn.

Walmart Offering $30 Gift Cards in Car Seat Trade-In Program That old car seat lurking in your garage or gathering dust in your basement may be more valuable than you think. In celebration of National Baby Safety Month, Walmart will allow customers to trade in their old car seats for $30 gift cards starting September 16, with a maximum of two gift cards per household. The Suffern, Monroe, Middletown and Monticello Walmart stores are all participating in the promotion, which will last through September 30 and is only valid on car seats, not booster seats. Car seats have a limited life span and are typically stamped with an expiration date. According to the Juvenile Products Manufacturers Association, the average life span of a car seat has increased recently from six to eight years to eight to twelve years from the date of manufacture. Once they have reached their expiration date, car seats should not be used because they are made out of plastic, which degrades over time after being subjected to extreme temperatures during both the winter and the summer. Similarly, any car seat that has been in a crash should not be used even if it appears intact, because it may contain hairline fractures or other structural damage not visible to the naked eye. “Safety, especially car seat safety, is a top priority for Walmart’s baby department, so we wanted to use our size and scale to create an event that offered unprecedented access to trade in an outgrown car seat for a gift card,” said Melody Richards, vice president of Walmart Baby. All car seats received during the Walmart trade-in

program will be fully recycled. A similar program offered by Target runs through September 13, giving customers a 20 percent–off coupon that can be used on the purchase of car seats, strollers and select baby gear.

Three Sifrei Torah Welcomed in a Single Day in Monsey Area Shuls The first day of Elul took on special meaning in the Monsey area, as three community institutions welcomed new sifrei Torah within hours of each other. Yeshiva Ketana Bais Yehuda D’Chasidei Belz celebrated the completion of its new building at 710 Union Road in New Hempstead, with a noontime hachnasas sefer Torah at the home of Rabbi Chaim Schabes, mara d’asra of Congregation Knesses Yisroel. In recognition of the many months of construction that may have posed

hardships to its new neighbors, the yeshivah invited Knesses Yisroel’s membership to share in their simcha, and approximately 200 people escorted the new sefer Torah from Rabbi Schabes’ Barrie Drive home on its two-and-a-half-block journey to the yeshivah. Taking place at the same time approximately two miles to the east was a hachnasas sefer Torah in one of the Monsey area’s newer communities in New City. A Torah sponsored in the spirit of achdus and friendship by the members, families and supporters of the New City community was completed at the Buena Vista Road home of Rabbi Avraham Kahan, mara d’asra of Khal New City, with celebrants invited to write the final letters in the sefer. The musical procession made its way to Khal New City on Rodeo Drive at 2 p.m., after which participants enjoyed a seudah and divrei Torah. A third Torah dedication took place at 3 p.m. at Ohr V’daas in Chestnut Ridge in memory of Masha Lorenz, a Chestnut Ridge resident who passed away last winter. After friends, neighbors and family members sat down with the sofer to inscribe the final letters, the joyous procession accompanied the Torah to its new home at nearby Kehillas Spring Hill.

New License Plate Design Chosen in Cuomo Contest New Yorkers have cast their votes, and the winning license plate has been announced. ABC News reported that the winner of the “choose our next license plate” contest launched by Governor Andrew Cuomo — featuring images of the Statue of Liberty, Niagara Falls, a Long Island lighthouse, the New York City skyline and the Adirondack mountains — won nearly half of the 325,000 votes cast. Like four out of the five designs submitted for public vote, the license plate bears the state motto “Excelsior,” a Latin word meaning “ever upward.” Three of the plates not chosen featured only an image of Lady Liberty. The fourth portrayed the new Tappan Zee Bridge, which bears the name of the governor’s father, former Governor Mario Cuomo, already a sore

topic for many. That design came in dead-last in voting. "The design overwhelmingly selected by New Yorkers showcases some of our most iconic symbols and truly represents what the Empire State is all about — our diversity, our unparalleled architecture and natural beauty, and our unyielding commitment to freedom and justice for all," said Commissioner Mark J. F. Schroeder of the Department of Motor Vehicles. The new license plates will be available in April. The change comes with a $25 price tag. Those whose license plates are more than ten years old will have to either pay for the new plates or fork over a $20 fee to keep their existing plates. While Cuomo insisted that the new design was intended to make New York license plates more readable for license plate readers being installed at cashless toll booths, he has been criticized for using the plates as a money grab. According to The Wall Street Journal, there are currently three million license plates registered in New York State that have passed the ten-year mark, meaning that the new plates will bring in as much as $75 million in fees. Senator Jim Tedisco, who started a petition opposing the new plates, said that with the $5 million cost of manufacturing the new plates, New York stands to make $70 million in profits. “The resistance to Governor Cuomo’s highway heist to raise license plate fees by millions of motorists is growing,” said Tedisco in a written statement, describing the new license plate tax as a bad idea. “It’s not necessary, and the governor should listen to the overwhelming chorus of people who are outraged by it and do the right thing by revoking it.”

Recap: Janek suspects that Gustav has returned to the Christian orphanage of his own accord. He realizes that if this is the case, then he and his wife are in danger of being discovered. With Rabbi Walken’s agreement, he makes plans to escape from Bratislava immediately. Shaina Rosen, the principal of the school where Tzippy and Peretz’s wedding is taking place, comes to the affair to wish mazel tov… and is shocked at how elegant the event is. Senica, Czechoslovakia — 5708/1948

Ulush struggled with the window, but was unable to close it. “It’s broken.” Her hostess’s pleasant voice came from behind. The young woman turned around, slightly embarrassed at the sight of the tray that had been placed on the round table. “Just some coffee,” said Tessa Lieber as she poured milk into a cup of boiling water. “You haven’t eaten a thing since you got here.” “Thank you,” Ulush said, and tried not to inhale the odor of cows that wafted into the room together with the darkness and the cold. “But… I can’t really drink right now.” “You have to,” Tessa insisted. “You don’t plan to fast, do you? You mustn’t!” “I’m worried.” Ulush took the cup of coffee with trembling hands. “And I’m touched by your kindness, welcoming in two people who just knocked at your door with no advance notice…” “The pleasure is ours. We love having guests.” Tessa sat down on the edge of the bed. “And the fact that my husband knows

your husband from before the war gives us a very good feeling. Drink, Ulush.” “I’m so worried. And I miss Edo…” And suddenly, Ulush burst out crying. She put the full cup back onto the tray, and a few drops splattered onto the floor. “Who is Edo?” Tessa asked. “He’s the child who was with us for four days. I helped smuggle him out of a gentile institution. He’s so small… and alone… and now, after Gustav suddenly disappeared on him, we also did!” “I imagine that you had no choice,” Tessa said, trying to make sense of what Ulush was saying. “It’s true. The risk was too big after Gustav disappeared.” “And who is Gustav?” “The other boy who was with us. He disappeared today… And what’ll happen if he comes back?” “To where?” “To our apartment.” Tessa had no idea what she was supposed to say. “I left him a note,” Ulush said, taking a deep breath, “without writing where we were going, of course. But I don’t think he’ll

come back.” “What did you write?” “That he should wait for us next to the store where Janek bought the pen for him. It’s very close to the Agudas Yisroel building, and Janek asked its members to keep looking out for a boy standing there over the next few days — and nights. They can even see the store from the window of the building.” “You’re very clever,” Tessa said admiringly. “What about Edo — where is he?” “Someone from the Vaad took him to his house for now.” She took a meticulously folded handkerchief out of her pocket. “After we’ll see how we settle in, and if all is fine, perhaps we’ll take him back.” Tessa nodded and stood up. “The men will be back from Maariv soon,” she said. “I want to get a blankets for the two of you, and one to cover the broken window. It’s freezing here at night.” She walked out of the room, but almost immediately stuck her head back in. “I’m putting up some eggs,” she declared. “You must eat before you go to sleep.” This time, Ulush didn’t object. A few moments later, the men returned, and Janek and Ulush sat down to supper, which, besides for the eggs, consisted of fresh bread, a block of white cheese and a hot noodle kugel. Ulush was hardly able to eat. “I met Shlomke Brein in shul,” Janek said as he carefully peeled his egg. “There’s a real shul here? From before the war?” “What was here before the war was destroyed, but they turned a little hut into a decent shul, and there’s almost always a minyan there. It’s in a relatively good location, near the main roads and the city, but it’s also pretty quiet.” He looked at the tray on the table. “There’s plenty of food here, Ulush, and it’s not too hard to get. Why aren’t you eating?” “I have no appetite,” Ulush whispered, turning the slice of kugel in her plate over and over. “I keep thinking about Edo. And about Gustav.” “Brein told me — you know, he’s also very involved in these things — that in Trnava there’s a rather large group of children who received certificates — entry passes to Eretz Yisroel. I’m not sure they are genuine; I didn’t ask. With these things, it’s best to know as little as possible. But they are scheduled to leave the country in less than a week.” “To whom do these children belong?” “I’m not sure, but I don’t think it’s the Agudah.” “You don’t mean to suggest that we try to get Edo into that group, do you?” “That we should try?” He raised his eyes. “Ulush, he’s not ours.” “He is ours,” Ulush insisted. “I’m the one who rescued him out of those gentile hands, and that makes him mine, sort of, at least a little bit. And I won’t let him be sent away now with the freethinkers. There’s nothing to discuss! I don’t know what happened to Gustav. I didn’t watch him closely

enough, and I don’t know where he is now. But I won’t let Edo be taken away.” “I understand,” her husband said hastily. In the kitchen, on the other side of the house, their hosts were trying to be sensitive and give the couple their space. But Janek was sure that they could clearly hear them arguing and his wife now crying. “But I think you’re making a mistake, Ulush.” “Would you send him to Eretz Yisroel, Janek?” “I wasn’t talking about that. I was talking about the fact that Gustav, after all is said and done, is already a big boy.” He sighed. “You weren’t supposed to watch him more than you already did, and you mustn’t feel guilty that he disappeared.” She rubbed her eyes. “It doesn’t matter,” she said, gazing dumbly at the noodles mashed up in her plate. Had she just done that? Was she really the same person who, not that long ago, didn’t believe she would ever see noodles again? Certainly not clean ones. Or warm ones. And especially not noodles that were sprinkled with chopped walnuts. “But we must not neglect Edo.” “And what if we leave him in Bratislava, and the people from the orphanage track him down? Will that be better than if he travels with the group from Trnava?” “No,” Ulush said tightly. “But if we bring him here, it will be even better.” “Here? To this tiny room?” “You said you’d find us a house.” “B’ezras Hashem. But it might take a few days, and what will happen in the meantime?” She was quiet. “You know what?” Janek said gently. “It’s foolish to argue over this. So far the directors of the group from Trnava haven’t sent the

Agudah offers to include any of our children. They must have enough people of their own who want certificates. So for now, Edo is in Bratislava, and we are here, and when I find us a house or a room to rent, we’ll discuss it again, all right?” Yerushalayim

“What’s doing, Miri? How’s routine after all that partying?” It was nice to meet Dena, her father’s younger sister, in the middle of Chazon Ish Street. She leaned over Shmuely’s carriage and cooed at him as he gazed at her, wideeyed. “Wait, it hasn’t yet been fourteen weeks, has it?” “Not yet.” “Good, so you’re still on maternity leave… Do you visit your mother a lot? Do you see Tzippy?” Miri rolled her eyes theatrically. “Who dares disturb a young couple?” Dena chuckled. “They need to recover, huh? What a wedding they had… A real party that was! Not to mention the Shabbos sheva brachos. Believe me, your mother deserved that relaxing Shabbos on Kibbutz Chofetz Chaim. She must have worked so hard these past few weeks. It’s not easy to marry off a daughter in just four weeks!” “Yeah.” Miri cooperated by shaking her head vigorously. “Not easy at all.” “Is it true that the couple is also getting a monthly stipend for the first year?” Dena asked, not aware that the drop in her tone lent her question a gossipy tinge. “Your father didn’t really want to talk much about this grant, so I didn’t get the whole picture.”

Ahhh. But they don’t want to talk too much about this grant with me either, Auntie dear. So I also don’t have the whole picture. Why don’t they talk to me about it? Probably so I shouldn’t be jealous. They don’t want my envy to harm my sweet, rich younger sister. But it doesn’t help any! I am jealous! “If my father doesn’t want to talk about it, then I guess you shouldn’t be asking me…” she said with a smile. “Of course, of course.” Dena retreated hastily. “So, what’s there to say? You really need special mazel to be named Tziporah Genendel and to get engaged to a boy named Peretz. I was beginning to think that it’s too bad I didn’t give my Shuli that name. After all, Tziporah was our grandmother on one side, and Genendel was the grandmother on the other side. None of my brothers or sisters thought about connecting the two names, except for your father…” “And if you would have named her that, you would also have to find her a chasan named Peretz,” Miri said, joining in the game. “Peretz isn’t such an unusual name,” Dena insisted. “I’m sure we could find one.” Suddenly she began to laugh. “Okay, I’m really too old for these ‘Let’s Pretend’ games… Hey, she lives pretty close to here, doesn’t she?” “Yes, on Nechemiah. It’s not far from here.” “But not near your house.” “Right. I live in Pardes Katz.” In a tiny, dingy apartment. “So what are you doing here now? On your way to your mother?” “No, she’s at work now. I’m going to pop in to visit my grandfather. Since my mother started working, I try to go see him twice a week in the morning.” “Good for you, devoted grand-

daughter! What about after you go back to work?” “I only work three days a week,” Miri said. “I’m a rotating substitute preschool teacher in a few different preschools; I don’t have my own class. But, baruch Hashem. It’s three full days with the afternoon program, so it adds up.” “Where are the preschools?” “Two in Ramat Gan and one in Tel Aviv. They belong to the frum preschool network.” “That’s great,” her aunt said, accompanying her down the street. “That’s how you start. I’m sure that the supervisors there will see how talented and capable you are, and then they’ll give you more hours.”

WHILE I’LL BE WORKING THOSE EXTRA HOURS, MY SISTER WILL BE RESTING IN HER PRETTY HOUSE AS THAT MONTHLY STIPEND GLIDES INTO HER BANK ACCOUNT. “I hope so.” And while I’ll be working those extra hours, my sister will be resting in her pretty house as that monthly stipend glides into her bank account. And based on the amount of money that has been streaming in until now, she probably won’t be getting a measly thousand shekels a month, or even two thousand. What was it Dena had said? “You really need special mazel to be named Tziporah Genendel.” Right. Extremely special mazel. Aunt and niece parted, and two minutes later, Miri walked into the elevator in the old-age home. She hoped her grandfather would be in a good enough mood, because if he would only want to sleep like last Monday, she would just become even more frustrated. He had never been a big talker, but even as a girl she always knew that she could tell him her secrets from kindergarten or school, and ask him questions that bothered her. Whenever she spoke to him, she felt like she was getting special treatment, saved only for oldest granddaughters. The door to the room was open a bit, and Miri was taken aback to hear voices from inside. “And look at this picture, where you’re making the bracha under the chuppah. I want to frame it and hang it here in this room. It’s such a stunning picture, Zeidy, isn’t it?” Miri pushed open the door to find Tzippy sitting at the round table with their grandfather, bent over a large photo album. To be continued...

Mark Sanford Announces His Candidacy BACKGROUND: On Sunday, Mark Sanford announced that he would challenge President Trump for the 2020 Republican Presidential Nomination. With this announcement, Sanford became the third Republican candidate to announce a challenge to the president. Sanford formerly served as a congressman and governor of South Carolina. In 2010, the libertarian Cato Institute ranked Sanford as the best governor in

132 / THE MONSEY VIEW / September 11, 2019 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484

America. However, Sanford’s second term as governor was plagued with scandal. He was censured by the state House of Representatives and was forced to resign as Chairman of the Republican Governors Association. He made a modest comeback in 2013 when he won a special election for his old congressional seat in South Carolina’s first district. Sanford was supportive of Trump’s 2016 presidential bid, but quickly soured on Trump and became a vocal critic of the president’s rhetoric, governing style, and indifference to the national deficit. In 2018, Trump referred to Sanford as “very unhelpful” and “nothing but trouble.” He endorsed Sanford’s opponent in his congressional primary race, and Sanford went down in defeat. In announcing his candidacy, Sanford said that the “GOP had lost its way.” He conceded that it would

be challenging to beat Trump and that “this is the beginning of a long walk, but it begins with a first step.” Sanford criticized Trump for unchecked government spending, a ballooning deficit and record-breaking national debt. He also attacked Trump on trade, claiming that the GOP had always sought to engage with the world on trade. Sanford was also critical of Trump’s style of discourse and its effect on the national political conversation. WHY IT MATTERS: Sanford will be a thorn in Trump’s side and yet another critical voice from the right. The damage inflicted by Sanford and other Republican candidates will likely not be enough to unseat Trump. However, it may lead to an erosion of support from what is still a very loyal GOP base.

Nevada, Kansas and South Carolina GOP Cancel Presidential Primaries BACKGROUND: The Republican parties of Nevada, Kansas and South Carolina announced that they would not be holding presidential nominating contests during the 2020 election cycle. Instead, each state will automatically award all of its delegates to President Trump. Such a move is not without precedent, as states have canceled primaries in the past to protect an incumbent president. It remains to be seen how many other states will follow suit and automatically award

their delegates Trump.

to

President

WHY IT MATTERS: The can-

celation of the primaries is a preemptive move meant to avoid potential damage from insurgent candidates by insulating Trump from the critics in his own party. It is an indication that Trump may be vulnerable to criticism on the many issues that he has deviated from in regard to conservative orthodoxy. The GOP does not want Trump to have to face a Democratic candidate after a messy political fight on the right. They want to deliver a unified base that is fully supportive of his candidacy for a second term as president.

Howard Schultz Drops Independent Presidential Bid for 2020 BACKGROUND: Former Starbucks CEO Howard Schultz will not be running for president in 2020. Schultz had previously touted the idea of challenging President Trump as a “centrist independent” in 2020. However, in June he announced that he would take a break from campaigning due to health issues, and on Friday he announced that he would not be running in 2020. In a prepared statement he said, “My belief in the need to reform our two-party system has not wavered, but I have concluded that an independent campaign for the White House is not how I can best serve our country at this time.” WHY IT MATTERS: Democrats

had feared that a well-financed independent bid with a candidate that has national name rec-

ognition would draw votes away from their candidate. Democrats are still smarting from thirdparty candidates such as Ralph Nader and Jill Stein. They blame them for taking votes away from Al Gore and Hillary Clinton in closely fought elections. Schultz’s withdrawal from the race helps them set up the 2020 election as a binary choice between President Trump and his Democratic challenger.

Foreign Policy Challenges Linger BACKGROUND: Trump abruptly canceled a previously unannounced meeting with Taliban officials at Camp David and announced that he would be open to meeting with Iranian President Hassan Rouhani. Trump will likely meet with Iranian officials at the sidelines of the upcoming session of the UN General Assembly in New York. WHY IT MATTERS: Trump has

shown that he can hang tough and is willing to walk away from summits and meetings when necessary. However, Trump has also shown a propensity for showmanship. He will often trust his senses at the expense of the advice of experts. He has excused away the troubling actions of Kim Jong-Un in the name of personal chemistry. Most of all, he has failed to secure a deal on North Korea, Afghanistan or Iran. Trump campaigned on the premise that Obama was weak on foreign policy and that he would be able to clinch deals that would be much more beneficial for America. As he faces 2020, Trump will be pressed to show that he can deliver on his promise for America and her allies.

There was a gaping hole in the New York City skyline. Where once the Twin Towers dominated the scene, their grandeur the focal point of the horizon, the smoldering ruins now lent a haziness to the conglomeration of buildings. New York was bereft, the most prominent of its symbolic structures demolished. “Terrorist attacks can shake the foundations of our biggest buildings, but they cannot touch the foundation of America. These acts shattered steel, but they cannot dent the steel of American resolve.” President Bush’s words on 9/11 reverberated across the country, echoing the resilience of a nation chosen for destruction as “the brightest beacon for freedom and opportunity.” Because upon the shambles, the United States would rebuild.

Ground Zero was still a disaster zone when the flick of a switch brought the first 9/11 commemoration to life. Two ethereal vertical columns of light, an effect achieved by the strategic placement of 88 searchlights, dominated the Manhattan sky from March 11, 2002, until April 14, 2002. The Tribute in Light was turned on again on September 11, 2003, and has been lit up on the anniversary of that fateful fall day since. A crew of about 30 technicians, electricians and stagehands pre-

pare the display in the week leading up to September 11. With precision, they aim each spotlight straight at the sky — for the effect is ruined if even one spotlight is off by a fraction of a degree — while spotters in Brooklyn, Staten Island and New Jersey call in with adjustments until the display is perfect. On a clear night, this iconic symbol, which both honors the victims and celebrates the unbreakable spirit of our country, can be seen even 60 miles away.

It was never a question that the 16-acre site that lay in ruins would be reconstructed, but that was probably the only idea unanimously agreed upon in the post-9/11 weeks. While the cleanup and search efforts were still underway, with hundreds of tons of debris being removed from Ground Zero, debate erupted as the influential powers involved were divided over what exactly the future function of the World Trade Center site should be. One early proposal was that the Twin Towers should be reconstructed at a taller height than before, a project that would be called Twin Towers II. (This plan was

strongly supported by Donald Trump, who would be sponsoring the project, and one of the many names of this proposed design was Trump Twin Towers.) Others argued that out of respect for the victims and their families, the property should not be exploited as an income-generating space, but that the entire site should serve as a memorial with spaces for reflection. On the opposite end, Larry Silverstein, the leaseholder of the World Trade Center complex, wanted to restore the 13 million square feet of “Class A” office space that was lost with the devastation of the sevenbuilding complex. A compromise was soon reached with a basic plan that would implement several elements that would take all of those factors into consideration: a memorial, a museum, as well as six new skyscrapers for commercial and retail space. The site would be split in half, with 8 acres designated for commercial space and 8 acres for commemoration and reflection. But who would be the one to decide how the space would be allocated and designed?

Just six weeks before the attack, Silverstein signed a 99-year lease for the World Trade Center after winning the bid at $3.2 billion. At that time, he also took out insurance plans from multiple insurance companies. The policies combined equaled $3.55 billion. After the attack, Silverstein claimed his insurance not once, but twice, on the basis that the two separate strikes constituted two separate occurrences within the meaning of his policy. At the end of a complicated six-year insurance battle, Silverstein walked away with $4.6 billion in claims, significantly less than the $7.1 billion he’d originally claimed, but more than the payout would be after a single occurrence.

Which person or team would be the one to give the NYC skyline a new face? Anyone with a brilliantenough plan. In November 2001, Governor Pataki and Mayor Guliani, joined by Mayor-elect Bloomberg, appointed a group of dynamic and committed leaders — in areas of business, government and community — to serve as the Board of Directors for the Lower Manhattan Development Corporation, the commission that would set in motion the reconstruction of the site. At first, the LMDC sent out requests to 24 Manhattan architectural firms for design proposals, then withdrew them. In July 2002, they unveiled six concepts for reconstructing the site, all incorporating the elements that were specified in the original plans.

New Yorkers were unimpressed with the sketches. So unimpressed, in fact, that in the coming days, the LMDC fielded over 5,000 complaints and suggestions via email, with the general consensus being that the design was “poor,” “boring” and “overstuffed with office space.” Another 5,000 comments enforcing the points came from participants of a Town Hall meeting organized for the purpose, and then thousands more from visitors to an exhibition of the plans. Their voices did not go unheard, and so the commision turned to the public in August 2002, extending an invitation to innovative architects and planners from around the world to compete to design the World Trade Center site. From the submissions, five finalists would be selected to join a month-long design study, after which there’d be one winner — an in-

dividual or team — who’d be nominated as the master plan architect of One World Trade Center. Incorporating the suggestions voiced by the families of victims and the general public at large, a list of competition guidelines were set forth, detailing the elements every design submission would have to incorporate: a distinctive skyline, recognition of the original footprint of the towers, commercial and retail

space, a new street grid to connect the traffic on either side, a grand promenade, a central transit center for PATH and subway passengers, a cultural element (museum or art enclave), a memorial commemorating the victims, and open public areas of different sizes. Despite the daunting task, within a few months hundreds of submissions came pouring in from around the world. A coalition of 21

architecture, engineering, planning and design professionals, along with the LMDC commission, narrowed down the field of candidates — originally topping 2,000! — to seven semifinalists, all of whom were invited to compete to be the historical master plan architect. In December of 2002, all seven semifinalists presented their entries to the public. Have a look at their proposals.

both create a symbolic skyline addition, yet retain a marketable office tower. Libeskind’s architectural flourishes fell away, and he scored only one victory: The Freedom Tower would stand 1,776 feet tall.

AND THE WINNER! Daniel Libeskind, Polish-American architect, known for designing the Jewish Museum in Berlin, Germany, as well as other impressive structures

Libeskind’s design was packed with symbolism. The proposed building stood at 1,776 feet tall to represent the year America gained their independence, and the tall, asymmetrical spire detached from the main building to echo the raised torch of the Statue of Liberty. But, wait. One World Trade Center doesn’t even resemble this design... Because both Gov. Pataki’s original name — Freedom Tower — and Libeskind’s original design would be tampered with before the project would come to fruition. In fact, by the time Libeskind was announced the winner of

the design competition, Larry Silverstein, who as leaseholder owned the right to hire the architect, had already commissioned David Childs from Skidmore, Owings and Merrill (the designers of the Willis Tower and the Burj Khalifa) to carry out his more commercial vision. What followed were months of debate and design tweaks to Libeskind’s plan as the team tried to find a middle ground that would

THE COMPETITIONS didn’t end there. In April 2003, The Word Trade Center Site Memorial Competition was launched. As an open competition, anyone from across the world was invited to submit their design for a memorial to remember and honor victims of the 2001 and 1993 attacks, in accordance to the specifications of Daniel Libeskind. A selection jury was announced — it included artists, architects, family members of victims, as well as politicians and a member of the Rockefeller family, the influencers behind the original Twin Towers. The wheels started churning in the greatest design minds, and even in those of amateur artists, and the contest garnered a huge response: 5,201 entries from 63 nations and 49 out of the 50 states, making it the largest design competition in history. The entries are all still available for viewing.

The winner, Reflecting Absence, was revealed on January 14, 2004. In the words of the jury of the competition, “In its powerful, yet simple articulation of the footprints of the Twin Towers, Reflecting Absence has made the voids left by the destruction the primary symbols of our loss. It is a memorial that expresses both the incalculable loss of life and its consoling renewal, a place where all of us come together to remember from generation to generation.” By 2009, the name was officially changed from Freedom Tower, since potential renters were afraid to sign a contract in a politically named building. One World Trade Center proved to be a lot more renter-friendly. Currently, the asking price for rent ranges from $72 to $85 per rentable square foot. That means that the smallest office (4,719 square feet) now for rent at the lowest price ($72 per square foot), has an asking rent of $28,314 per month, or $339,768 per year. One World Trade Center is the tallest building in the United States and in the entire Western Hemisphere, and is the sixth-tallest building in the world. Its height, including its spire, is 1,776 feet. The observatory deck begins at 1,362 feet, the former height of the south tower, and the glass parapet extends to 1,368 feet, the former height of the north tower. One World Trade Center has a cubic base. Its edges form eight isosceles triangles. Near its middle, the tower forms a perfect octagon. Today, the Manhattan skyline once again has a focal point. 9/11: Is there a date from recent history more seared into the American conscience than this? For New Yorkers, especially, 9/11 brings back the haunting memory of the World Trade Center collapse, a moment in time that redefined every American’s relationship with their country. While Taliban adherents rejoiced as the Twin Towers crumpled into a burning heap of downed humanity and twisted metal, citizens steeled their resolve: Terror would not prevail. As one, New York citizens surged forward to locate, evacuate and treat victims of the attack. Part and parcel of the search-andrescue mission were many Jewish first responders. “My father was there when the first tower fell,” Chaim Mandel tells me when we speak. His father, the renowned Flatbush Hatzolah paramedic Reb Beinish Mandel, a”h, had rushed to Manhattan as soon as he’d heard that a plane had hit the north tower. “He was across the street when the first tower fell and was saved when he jumped into a fire truck.”

The clouds of smoke and debris enveloped everything, obscuring vision and making breathing difficult. “At first, they couldn’t even see that the tower fell.” And then disaster struck again, only 29 minutes later. “When the second tower fell, my father was part of a pile of people who jumped onto one another, saving each other with their own bodies.” With the intentional downing of the Twin Towers, the United States devolved into a state of emergency, and citizens near and far wrung their hands in distress, praying for positive outcomes in the fate of loved ones. On the streets of Manhattan, however, chaos reigned; hand-wringing was a luxury one could ill afford. Covered in soot, breathing through clothing as makeshift filters, and cut off from the world, those who had been in the immediate vicinity at the time of the attacks sought nothing more than escape. But with the city on

lockdown, public transportation was immobilized, and the only way out was on foot. It would be hours before many were able to contact their families, and months before the area would return to it’s new “normal” — both the people and the land forever changed by an unforgivable act of terror. In the weeks following the attack, Ground Zero continued to swarm with volunteers, first searching for the still-living buried beneath the rubble, and later retrieving the remains of those who didn’t make it. Search-and-rescue dogs wandered endlessly upon the piles made of broken buildings and broken bodies, sniffing for the scent of human beings. Their nostrils, eyes and paw pads needed frequent washing to rid them of the thick dust that coated everything. The humans fared little better. Despite federal regulations requiring recovery workers to be outfitted with respirators, few carried them and only some wore them. At that point, the local populace had little concern for the quality of the air, having been reassured by Mayor Giuliani, "The air is safe, as far as we can tell, with respect to chemical and biological agents." Not much later, the administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Christine Todd Whitman, announced in a press release,

esearchers starved a man for three days, after that period of time, they placed a piece of bread in front of him, but did not allow him to eat.

The man cast jealous glances at the bread, wishing to take just one bite. Later the researchers cut open bread and found that the inside was filled with a deadly poison. The man’s jealous eyes changed created poison in the bread. (Pardes Yosef)

An Ayin Horah is as much part of nature as light, sound, and radio waves. Unlike a Segulah, which is a supernatural power that cannot be understood, an Ayin Horah is a purely a natural force, an innate phenomena that Hashem has placed in the world.

Yes, an Ayin Horah is a real thing. That is still no reason to fret, but if things seem to be spiraling out of control, call Einy Yeshuah and we will gladly check if there is an Ayin Horah on you.

THE VICTIM COMPENSATION FUND 9/11-related illnesses take many forms, though cancer is one of the most deadly. It is estimated that at least 40,000 people who were in Manhattan near the World Trade Center at the time of the attack or in the weeks following suffer from a 9/11-related illness. To this end, the Victim Compensation Fund was established to provide funding for healthcare expenses and compensation for sufferers. More than $7 billion was initially paid to families of the 9/11 victims and the nearly 3,000 people who were injured that fateful day, but it wasn’t until 2011 that the James Zadroga 9/11 Health and Compensation Act was passed, enabling first responders and other survivors of the terror attack to seek funding for their damaged health. The fund was to be discontinued in December of 2020, but President Trump signed a law in July of this year that authorizes the fund to continue functioning through 2092.

“We are very encouraged that the results from our monitoring of air quality and drinking water conditions in both New York and near the Pentagon show that the public in these areas is not being exposed to excessive levels of asbestos or other harmful substances." But with more than 1.5 million tons of debris removed from Ground Zero during the cleanup operation, the truth was actually far grimmer than had been relayed to the public. Most of the dust was made of pulverized concrete, but building materials such as glass were found to be in high concentration as well. Additionally, noxious jet fuel, burnt plastic and chemicals used in the buildings contributed to the air quality and dust composition. Importantly, the first 40 floors of the Twin Towers had been constructed with steel beams that had been sprayed with asbestos-laden fireproofing material before regulations were tightened regarding its use. The truth was that breathing the air was far from safe... “It was Chol Hamoed Pesach 2006 when my father began to feel unwell. The first symptom was pain in his back. Being a highly skilled paramedic, he knew when it was time to see a doctor,” Chaim Mandel tells me. He describes the vast network of medical professionals Reb Beinish had been in contact with, the result of 35 years’ worth of involvement with Hatzolah. With his effervescent personality, the paramedic had established close relationships with many doctors. “It’s hard for a son to put into words how special his father was,” Mr. Mandel says. “He was a very, very special man. When he gave shalom aleichem, it

THE SMOKE FROM THE TWIN TOWERS WAS ABLE TO BE SEEN FROM SPACE.

was always with two hands. He made people feel cared for.” Beinish Mandel made an impression wherever he went. He was the type of person who embodied what it meant to fulfill the dictum of sever panim yaffos. As his son tells me, “Someone in shul encapsulated it very well, saying, ‘Beinish is not just a name; it’s a middah!’” For this reason, community members, the gedolim who’d call him for health-related issues, and physicians all trusted his skill and felt uplifted by his positivity. So when Reb Beinish needed medical help himself, he found that doors opened wide. “My father’s friend was the Chief of Radiology at Peninsula General Hospital in Far Rockaway, and he was able to get him in for an MRI right away. The scan revealed that there were tumors in his back, in his spine.” The diagnosis was lymphoma, courtesy of 9/11. Reb Beinish Mandel had spent three weeks at Ground Zero, assisting recovery efforts together with his close friend Shlomo Zackheim, founder of Metropol-

itan Ambulance and fellow Hatzolah paramedic. Like many other 9/11 rescue personnel, Reb Zackheim, a”h, also succumbed to a dread disease, though his diagnosis came later than, and his passing before, Reb Beinish’s. They were both a young 59 when niftar. To date, nearly 10,000 people have been diagnosed with a 9/11-linked cancer. “When my father first received his diagnosis, his reaction was, ‘Now I’ll be able to help people even better, knowing what they’re actually going through.’ He took the diagnosis as a siman that the Ribono Shel Olam was telling him that he needed to really feel the tza’ar of others to be able to help them at the highest level.’” Reb Beinish spent his entire life not only saving others, but uplifting them as well. “He was always busy being m’chazek others with illness, specifically those with cancer. He’d accompany them to treatments to calm their fear. That’s just who was. Even when he was shvach, he’d still speak to people on the phone, encouraging them, infusing them with

faith and helping them avoid depression.” Reb Beinish made it part of his life’s mission to prevent depression from overwhelming both himself and others. Chaim Mandel tells me about a dear friend of his who’d also been diagnosed with cancer. “My father planned to visit him in Baltimore, saying that he couldn’t guarantee how long my friend’s life span would be, but one thing he could guarantee was that my friend wouldn’t die of depression on his watch! “My father was a wonderful friend to many, and people would confide in him,” Mr. Mandel tells me. “And he was tight-lipped, too. Whatever someone told him remained in him.” To illustrate this fact, Mr. Mandel tells me of a letter his mother received during the shivah. “The letter-writer wrote about all the many ways my father helped her, but it was how she signed the letter that was most notable. She wrote, ‘I’m not even going to sign my name because only Hashem, my doctor and your husband even knew that I am sick.’” For ten and a half years, Reb Beinish battled with cancers; first he fought lymphoma, and then growths in the G.I. tract. As part of his hishtadlus, he traveled the world over to consult with the top physicians,

leaving no stone unturned. His own network of physicians entwined with that of his dear friend’s, the famed Rabbi Firer of Ezra LeMarpeh in Eretz Yisroel. “He sought out the best, and though there are many good doctors, he chose a ben Torah as his physician, the oncologist Michael Bashevkin. While he had many options, he wanted someone who was both skilled and had yiras Shamayim.” During the decade-long illness, Beinish Mandel viewed every day as a gift, maintaining that he was supposed to have been dead twice over. “My father’s hashkafah was that he was supposed to die on 9/11, not once, but twice, with the falling of each tower. But because of the chesed he’d done in the past, and the chesed he’d do in the future, he felt he was gifted extra years.” The truth is, though, that it is we, as a community, who were gifted those extra years of having such a special person in our midst. And even now that he has fallen, he continues to uplift. We can all learn something from the way Reb Beinish Mandel devoted his life to others, and in some way, we can all take upon ourselves to be just a bit like Beinish. Dedicated in memory of Reb Beinish Mandel, a"h, and all volunteers who risked life and limb in the rescue and recovery efforts of 9/11.

Many of us have grown up with the images of September 11 ingrained in our minds. Only a passing mention of that fateful day reminds us of the horrific scenes, and the feeling of our hearts pounding in fear at the thought of yet another devastating attack. Yet from the horror of that day, another idea emerged. While the world mainly focused on the acts of terror, there were also loving messages to be gleaned — because Hashem’s guiding Hand is everywhere, even in scenes of utter destruction and terror. Along with the dreadful events of 9/11 came stories of great miracles. There are so many people who should have been — or actually were — at the site and were miraculously saved. Some of the amazing accounts are well-known: people who were saved because of a missed bus, a delayed train, a child feeling unwell, and so on. Then there were Hatzolah members who survived because they decided to set up their command posts outside the building instead of in the lobby of the second tower, as other ambulance crews had. For one Hatzolah member, a different miracle was revealed when

he emerged unscathed from an ambulance he had ducked into as the tower fell, while the ambulance next to it was completely crushed. What may have looked like coincidence, or even inconvenience, brought about enormous miracles. Below are three more stories illustrating Hashem’s chesed even within these dark moments. ARI SCHONBRUN was an executive at Cantor Fitzgerald, a financial services company that occupied the top five floors in Tower One. Sadly, the firm lost 658 of its 960 employees in the 9/11 attack. When the tower was hit, Ari was on the 78th floor instead of at his desk due to a 20-minute delay at home. He had promised to help his son with a Scholastic book order sale, and his decision to take care of it that morning led to the first miracle of his survival. But it didn’t stop there. Still inside Tower One, Ari met a coworker who was badly injured with third degree burns and needed his assistance to climb down the 78 flights to safety. When they reached the ground, Ari sought medical assistance for his injured coworker and wanted to reenter the tower to find more of his colleagues. His coworker, however, adamantly refused to let him go, instructing the paramedics not to leave unless he’d accompany them in the ambulance. Reluctantly, Ari agreed. A short while later, the building collapsed. Ari was saved twice on that day, and in the months that followed, he made a point to internalize the miracles instead of letting them merely slip by. Before the attack, his main focus in life had been his job. Now, he explained, his focus shifted to his family and to strengthening his faith in Hashem. While Ari’s story is widely known, there are many other miraculous occurrences not yet shared with the public. MIRAM ENGEL* worked for a company located several blocks from the Twin Towers. At the time, Miriam would often bring to work kosher baked goods and groceries from Brooklyn for her boss, who was slowly adapting to a religious lifestyle. On the morning of September 11, Miriam arrived in Manhattan carrying not only heavy bags of kosher food, but also passports that needed to be renewed, as she and her husband were planning to travel to Eretz Yisroel. Before heading to her office, she stopped at a nearby post office to take care of the passports.

184 / THE MONSEY VIEW

There she was told that if she wanted on-the-spot service, she was better off renewing them at the World Trade Center post office. After contemplating her options, Miriam decided that since she was carrying heavy bags — and since her husband was scheduled to be in Manhattan that afternoon, and he’d be able to take care of the passport renewals — she would go straight to her office. It was when she was finally settling down in her office that Miriam was startled by a thunderous crash — the sound of a plane ramming into a building. She soon learned that Tower One had been attacked. Looking back, she marvels over the fact that the purpose of those bags of kosher food was only to save her life. ANOTHER AMAZING STORY was told by Rabbi Yehuda Kravitz, who was the head of kashrus at the OU at the time of the attacks. His office was located a few blocks away from the Twin Towers, and when Tower One collapsed, he was walking from the train to his office. “It was a total blackness,” he says. “The city was covered with thick layers of ash. You could not even see your hand in front of you.” In the suffocating dark, he heard people calling out for help. He had no idea where he was going, but he called out to them to follow his voice. Suddenly, Rabbi Kravitz reached a door. Whispering the words “Ein od milvado,” he banged on the door until someone opened it. The door turned out to lead to the basement of a bank. After the group entered, Rabbi Kravitz asked the employee who’d opened the door what he’d been doing in the basement. The man told him that while he’d been evacuating the higher floors, he’d had a sudden feeling that someone was in the basement and decided to go check out the space. It was at that moment that he’d heard the banging, just in time to provide them with shelter. The miracles woven into the tragic events of September 11 were clearly sparks of chesed — the Hand of Hashem saving His children amid horrific circumstances. Because even in the hardest of times, He is always there — guiding, helping and running His world in a way that is ultimately for our best.

The Skyscraper Story In an entirely new architectural concept, William Jenney created a structure with metal frames during the late 1880s — and the phenomenon of high-rise buildings was born! The invention of the elevator helped this new model take off. The first high-rise tower was the Home Insurance Building in Chicago, built in 1885. The greatest concentration of early skyscrapers was found in Chicago and New York City. Skyscrapers were originally designed for commercial use, but with population explosions in urban areas, the concept was soon applied to residential housing as well.

The World’s 10 Tallest Skyscrapers

A skyscraper is classified as a high-rise building with at least 40 floors and a height of at least 492 feet or taller. Some also consider buildings with a minimum height of 262 feet skyscrapers, providing that they stand out above surrounding structures and impact the skyline.

Recreation September 3 is National Skyscraper Day! Some people celebrate the architectural geniuses behind these tall towers by climbing (or taking the elevators) to the top. The Vertical World Circuit hosts international races up the staircases inside some of the world’s tallest skyscrapers. “Buildering” is the term used for the dangerous activity of climbing the exterior of buildings. People are more commonly sighted buildering at night, as it often involves trespassing.

Fascinating Facts The Intempo skyscraper in Benidorm, Spain, is a residential high-rise with 47 floors and no elevators. The Empire State Building was built in 410 days. It takes 37 seconds to travel from the 5th floor to the 89th floor in the ultra-quick elevators of Taipei 101. There are 2,909 stairs in the world’s tallest building, the Burj Khalifa. This means a climb to the top would take approximately 97 hours!

Ready, Set, Go! The Race Is On… Soon after the first skyscrapers were designed, there was a scramble to grace the skyline with the tallest building. Tall buildings symbolize strength, superiority and modernity — the primary reasons for the chase.

The Chrysler Building in Midtown Manhattan and the Manhattan Trust Bank Building at 40 Wall Street were under construction simultaneously. Very aware of the skyscraper going up nearby, the architect of the Chrysler Building announced that his building would rise 925 feet high, prompting the builders of the 40 Wall Street building to adjust their plans, raising their peak to 927 feet high. Then, in a surprise move, the engineers at the Chrysler Building raised a spire they had secretly constructed within the dome, just as the 40 Wall Street building was completed. This brought the total height to 1,046 feet, which marked it as the world’s tallest building.

The title didn’t last long, however. Just eleven months later, it was superseded by the Empire State Building.

Built in 1931, the Empire State Building was the tallest building in the world for close to 40 years. The first World Trade Center tower seized the title in 1970.

More recently, the global race to reach greater heights intensified in a second wave of competition. Since 2000, skyscraper construction increased by more than 400 percent!

Ironically, despite being the first to start the competition, today New York City lags behind in the global race to the sky.

Slated for completion in 2020, the Kingdom Tower in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, is expected to be the world’s tallest building at 3,304 feet high.
