A world of Opportunities
Mainstream setting, specialized program: The best of both worlds
ה"ב
THERE’S A WORLD OUT THERE, AND YOUR SON WITH DOWN’S SYNDROME DESERVES TO BE PART OF IT. TO EXPERIENCE IT. FULLY.
Established to create a new world for high-functioning boys with Down’s syndrome, Yeshivas Bein Yakir is a special yeshiva in a mainstream setting, encapsulating the best that both worlds have to offer. Our individualized program and cuttingedge curriculum are designed to bring out the best in your son, so he can reach his greatest potential.
At Bein Yakir, we are passionate about educating our students at the highest standard possible, in order to help them attain sense of belonging and integration in the community. In an effort to set the stage for real-life living and learning, we have simulated a proper yeshiva model within a regular yeshiva, including a beautiful Beis midrash and study hall.
Our experienced and professional staff provide a full day program of solid Torah and academic study, as well as in-depth social skills training, in a constructive, nurturing environment. Our limudei kodesh curriculum includes Parshah, Halachah, Mishnayos, Yehados, Yedios klali, plus an advanced Kriah program. General studies includes math,
reading, writing and more. Using hands-on, multisensory approaches, our objective is to teach, reach and propel each student on his personal path to fulfillment.
Under the expert direction of our curriculum advisor and educational consultant Mrs. M. Perlstein, MS Ed , we formulate an annual IEP for each student, deliver unmatched educational material, and reassess each student’s performance weekly to monitor his progress and update our evaluation of his needs. A behavioral specialist is devoted to developing a customized behavioral plan for each student and setting incremental goals, reassessing and adjusting continuously. In addition, a parent advocate is on board to facilitate essential communication, offer support and guarantee optimal, person-centered care.
At Bein Yakir, we are on a mission to enable boys with Down’s syndrome to achieve maximum integration B’ezras Hashem by creating a culture of learning, growth and positivity. Our goal is to promote each student’s success in a structured, dynamic setting where he can thrive.
There’s a world of Torah out there. Let him delve into it.
There’s a world of knowledge out there.
Let him explore it.
There’s a world of happiness out there.
Let him discover it.

THE MAPLE AVENUE WE KNOW?
(Re: Setting the School Scene, Issue 264)
I really enjoyed the back-to school issue, especially the article about the early days of Bais Rochel. I was wondering, though, about the ancient picture of Maple Avenue. It’s a fascinating contrast to Maple as we know it today. But how do you know it’s actually that street?
Thank you for a wonderful publication. We look forward to it every week.
T.K.
THE MONSEY VIEW RESPONDS:
The photo printed is actually a sourced postcard from circa 1920. It’s a painting of Maple Avenue facing east (toward Spring Valley).
While it depicts an earlier time period than the article is set in, it does give a good idea of what Monsey looked liked at that point.
TWO AMAZING PRINCIPALS
(Re: Setting the School Scene, Issue 264)
I’d like to point out a typo in your article about Bais Rochel school. Our family joined Bais Rochel in September 1969, and I was part of the second graduating class of high school — one grade younger than Mrs. Friedman. I do not remember Rebbetzin Sarah Neiman (the elementary school principal for many, many years) ever being the high school principal. You would be referring to Mrs. Sara Spira.

SERENITY AND SAFETY (Re: A Hike in the Woods)
I want to thank you for the excellent hiking series you ran this summer.
With the economic downturn, social isolation and fewer vacation opportunities, there was a tremendous increase in hiking this year. We have directed dozens of families to your articles when they called us for suggested hikes.
Of all the searches and rescues we had this summer, there was not even one incident resulting from your articles. This attests to the clarity and the beautiful job you did.
The great zechus you have connecting adolescents, children and their parents in a safe, frum, meaningful way should be of merit to you in the coming year.
Thank you,
Jay Schwartz, Chief CommSAR – Community Search & Rescue

I would like to thank The Monsey View for such an amazing magazine that brings Monsey together and offers a platform where everyone can share their thoughts.
Someone suggested last week that you compile a recipe booklet with all your recipes. How I would love that too! Your recipes are really awesome —I especially loved the kokosh cake recipe — but it’s hard to clip all of them...
Thanks again!
A The Monsey View Fan
SO THAT I CAN CLIP THEM...
First, I would like to thank you for your amazing weekly publication! I always look forward to Wednesdays when I’ll be able to pick up the newest edition of The Monsey View and see what new ideas you have come up with. I especially enjoy the Inbox, The Cuckoo Clock serial, the Yiddish comics serial, finding the nine-or-more letter word hidden in the Boggle board, and of course, the recipes. For over the last two years, I’ve been clipping your recipes and saving them in a loose-leaf binder. The food tastes even more delicious than they look in your tantalizing pictures, and many recipes have even become staples in my home!
However, I was disappointed to see that lately you started to print multiple recipes per page, with the pictures on separate pages. I would appreciate it if you could go back to printing just one recipe together with the enticing picture per page. Which would make it easier and neater for the readers who, like me, clip only the recipe

I took a small package intended for London to my local post office for mailing. The salesperson suggested I go with the cheapest option envelope. I took it home, repackaged the item, added the address, and returned to the post office, where I was quoted a mailing price of $61. Undeterred, I then took the package to another local post office branch. The salesperson asked me why I’m using that particular envelope when a cheaper option was available. She proceeded to sell me an envelope that cost $1.50, and the shipping was an additional $24.00. That’s a huge price difference!
Don’t be fooled into thinking that you can’t shop around even when it’s a government office.
SUIT YOUR SKILLS AND STRENGTHS
R.S.
This letter is intended for girls seeking jobs for the winter after their last year in seminary or high school. Please be mindful of what you are good at, and don’t jump at just any offer. Inquire as to what the job entails to ensure you land in something that is in your best interest and not in a position that will in the long run work against you.
For example, if someone dislikes math and was not successful in the subject, why would she apply for a bookkeeping position and commit to eight hours of math every day? There are so many jobs out there, baruch Hashem, that you can only win by choosing something within your skill set. Choose customer service over bookkeeping, for example, if you are more social than number-oriented.
Take a career test — there are plenty of free ones — and be honest with yourself about your strengths. If you already landed a job without the prior knowledge, please honestly review where you stand in your position, and see if you like the direction you’re heading in. Are you still at your training pay? Are you feeling you are not up to the level your employees would have wanted someone to be at after this amount of time on the job? Speak with your manager about it openly. Take their answer constructively, and, if need be, be the one to say, “I don’t think this job is highlighting my strengths, and I think I should look into something of a different sort.”
Be mature. You will only gain from finding a better job the second time around, knowing what you really will be best at.
Good Luck.

Yom Tov meals are best served hot.
The Babshi Shabbos Pan is placed atop a crockpot or on a regular pot to keep food warm without needing an extra flame or without overcrowding a hot plate. This is especially useful on Yom Tov when people have guests or to avoid keeping an extra flame burning. The pans are thick enough to hold solids or liquid but thin enough to absorb the heat. The handles can be folded over to secure the cover.

CDC to U.S. Governors: Prepare for November COVID-19 Vaccine Distribution
A letter from the Centers for Disease Control asking state governors to have distribution sites up and rolling by November 1 appears to be a sign that the long-awaited COVID-19 vaccine may be ready sooner than expected.
The Wall Street Journal reported that CDC Director Robert Redfield sent the letter on August 27, asking them to expedite applications for distribution facilities so that hundreds of millions of doses of vaccines can be supplied to state and local health departments, medical centers, doctors’ offices and other vaccine providers.
The CDC is partnering with the Dallas-based McKesson Corporation in its vaccine distribution efforts and has said that two doses of the vaccine would likely be necessary to provide immunity. According to Food and Drug Administration Commissioner Dr. Stephen Hahn, a COVID-19 vaccine could receive emergency authorization even before phase 3 clinical trials have successfully been completed. Despite the push to get a vaccine out quickly, Dr. Hahn insisted that safety continues to be a top priority as testing continues.
normal occupancy rates. Groups other than families living in the same household are limited to eight people, and patrons are required to wear masks unless they are eating or drinking at their tables. Diners are also required to leave their phone numbers with the restaurant so that they can be notified in the event of an inadvertent coronavirus exposure.
Governor Phil Murphy took to social media to advise restaurants that he expected full compliance.
“Reminder: The capacity limits & health protocols we’ve put in place for indoor dining are not kind suggestions,”
“We all recognize that the public will have confidence in our decisions only if they are supported by science,” said Dr. Hahn. “My personal commitment is to assure that all decisions meet FDA’s standard. The patient and the public always come first.”
Indoor Dining Debuts in NJ While NYC Restaurants File $2B Lawsuit Over Extended Closures
After five difficult months, New Jersey restaurants have finally been cleared for indoor openings, albeit at a limited capacity.
Garden State eateries opened their indoor dining areas on September 4, with capacity capped at 25% of their
wrote Murphy. “They are mandated. We will not tolerate any violations. We want you to welcome your customers back inside, but that must be done safely & in accordance with the rules.”
But prospects still look bleak across the Hudson, where New York City restaurants remain closed.
Mayor Bill de Blasio has said that he hopes to be able to announce a timeline for the gradual reopening of restaurants sometime in September. A group of more than 300 restaurants filed suit against the city last Friday, saying that the rights of over 150,000 eateries in the five boroughs have been violated. According to the filing, which seeks $2 billion in damages, many of those restaurants have been forced to close down permanently.
Governor Andrew Cuomo has also weighed in on the matter, even as de Blasio continues to discuss the restaurant issue, saying that he will not allow restaurants to open their doors without concrete plans to ensure that

COVID-19 regulations are enforced. A possible solution suggested by Cuomo would have 4,000 police officers deployed to ensure that masks and capacity rules are being followed, an idea that did not sit well with Blue Lives Matter NYC founder Joseph Imperatrice.
“We have to go to the neighborhoods, target the crime, get the bad guys off the street — and not worry whether or not somebody is sitting down and having dinner with a face mask,” Imperatrice told Fox News.
It’s Walmart+ Versus Amazon Prime as Retail Giant Launches Membership Program
Watch out Amazon Prime. Walmart+ is coming.
Hoping to go head to head with the hugely popular Amazon Prime that offers subscribers free two-day turnaround times, Walmart is rolling out its own membership program that will offer fast, free delivery on more than 160,000 items.
Root Canal Treatment
Walmart+ will go live on September 15 and will be available for $98 per year or $12.95 per month with a free fifteen-day trial period, coming in slightly under Amazon Prime’s $119 annual membership fee. Members will have access to a full range of items, including household essentials and groceries, with same-day service available in some cases. Walmart+ subscribers will also be able to scan and pay for items as they shop, bypassing the often lengthy checkout lines, with gas discounts of up to five cents per gallon available at certain stores.
A report in Barron’s indicated that Walmart+ could pose a serious threat to Amazon Prime. A consumer survey showed that shoppers were intrigued by Walmart’s new concept, with nearly two-thirds saying that they would subscribe or consider subscribing. That number was as high as 70% for 18- to 44-year-olds who are considered to be an important spending demographic, and there is reason to believe that existing shoppers will hop on board the Walmart+ train as well.
According to Walmart, other benefits will be added to the program over time.
“We are a company committed to meeting our customers’ needs,” said Walmart’s chief customer officer Janey Whiteside. “Customers know they can trust us and depend on us, and we’ve designed this program as the ultimate life hack for them. Walmart+ will bring together a comprehensive set of benefits where we see the greatest needs from our customers and where our scale can bring solutions at an unprecedented value.”

CHAPTER SEVENTY-ONE
Recap: Joe Ludmir donates a new wing to his shul’s library in memory of Alex Korman. He wonders who will do the same for him when he leaves this world. His gloomy thoughts lead him to once again feel his guilty conscience for living a lie and pretending to be Yosef Ludmir when he is, in fact, Gustav, and not Edo.
Blumi Hartstein calls Joe and lets him know that the Potolsky family knows everything and that they want to make contact with him.
Light burned his eyes. He coughed and turned over, and then, drawing on his strong self-discipline, stretched his arms and sat up.
It was morning already. Actually, it was almost lunchtime. The sun was blinding. When had he fallen asleep? And why had he slept on the armchair and not in his bed?
Then he remembered: They knew everything
Again, the pulse in his wrists began to throb rapidly, but not as intensely as the first time. At least a day and a half had passed since he’d gotten Mrs. Hartstein’s message. It was probably closer to two days, based on the location of the sun right now.
After the conversation, Joe hadn’t eaten or slept, and certainly not spoken to a soul or gotten back to anyone else on his list. He’d just paced from room to room, not finding a place to settle without feeling like he was choking. This wall belonged to Edo, and so did this couch, and this refrigerator, and the table… And everyone knew. Daniel and his father — and the rest of the extended Ludmir family — had probably heard about it already. And if they hadn’t, they would hear very soon…
He’d continued pacing restlessly, ignoring his age. Every so often, he’d slumped into a chair, drained, and then a short time later, he’d leaped out. He could not sit still. Only after the evening passed, and then the night, and a big chunk of the next morning and then
the next afternoon, when he felt near collapse, had he called his doctor on his private line.
“This is…it doesn’t matter who, I don’t know anyway, and you can identify my number even without a name. I received some very harsh news.” He’d steadied his voice. “I haven’t slept for about twenty-four hours, and I hardly sat down at all during that time. Except for water, I haven’t eaten or drank a thing, and I feel like I’m going to lose my mind. What do you suggest I do now?”
“Wait a minute, this is Joe Ludmir, right?” the doctor had asked, insisting on identifying him.
“If you want, for you, yes. And I remember my ID number by heart. At least that is mine.”
“How’s your pulse?”
“Decent.”
Dr. Benson had asked him if he had remembered to take his medications.
“Of course not,” he’d replied.
“So I’m sending help right away.”
“No.”
“I’m afraid you don’t realize how—”
“No.”
The doctor had known there was no point arguing. “Listen, Mr. Ludmir, it does not sound like a stroke.” He’d thought for a moment. “However, you don’t sound at your best right now, yes? But if you promise me that

you will take a sleeping pill right now, get into bed, and call me the minute you wake up, then I agree to leave you alone for now.”
“Fine,” Joe had replied.
The sleeping pill had gotten stuck in his throat, but after a few sips of water it had slid down. Thinking about it now, he should have been suing this doctor for medical malpractice, but what had he cared then? The doctor had probably been convinced that he was exaggerating. He was actually a good doctor, and he — Joe — certainly didn’t have the right to go around suing other people.
The Potolskys knew! Yisroel Bentzion — or Edo — knew the truth: that he was Yosef Ludmir, and the imposter — Gustav — currently living in this house was not. He, the man who had lived in poverty, and his daughter who had continued the cycle, were actually the owners of huge sums of money, in proportions they could probably never fathom.
So it was true that he had accumulated most of the wealth himself, with his toil of many years, but this wasn’t only about assets. And it was also true that he had likely repaid the value of the money that Gershon had saved during the war to Yisroel and his only daughter, through his artfully crafted plan. But it wasn’t the money that was the point, at least not at that moment.
His breaths had grown short and shallow, and he had not had the energy to get up and put his cup into the dishwasher.
He wasn’t a young man. He was nearing eighty.
Edo was younger than him; he knew that. But even if he lived until 120, it was safe to assume that most of his life was behind him.
What had Edo said? How had he reacted to the fact that the truth about his identity — and a warm family — had been withheld from him for most of his life? Had he even found the words? How much did he hate Joe right now, and to what extent did he realize why his older friend had not wanted to maintain ties over the years?
At some point, Gustav had moved from the chair to the recliner, and apparently he’d fallen asleep. That was where he’d woken up after fifteen hours of deep slumber. There had surely been some very turbulent dreams — starring Edo, of course — but he remembered nothing of them.
He got up to wash his hands, dragging his feet toward the sink. After rinsing his face thoroughly, he straightened up to look in the mirror over the sink. He saw an old, tired man looking back at him.
What did Edo see when he looked in the mirror?
Another elderly man, to some extent or another.
Tired. Drained from years of loneliness and poverty. Those factors definitely must have had a presence in his life. Joe knew that from the inquiries he had made about Edo.
But when Edo looked at his image, at least he didn’t see endless self-loathing and guilt. Pangs of conscience. Abysmal pain. He hadn’t taken anyone else’s identity or anyone else’s money. He was clean.
Suddenly, Gustav felt a strong desire to see what Edo saw when he looked in the mirror.

He took out a box of sugar-free cookies and sat down at the table. First, he would call the doctor, as he’d promised. Hmmm, three calls from the doctor. Good to see Dr. Benson had a speck of responsibility.
And then…
And then maybe he’d call that woman who had left him the message, the representative of Edo and his daughter. He had not become chareidi like Edo, but he was also observant, and a believing Jew. And if Hashem had brought him to this point, then maybe it was better for him to meet Edo face to face, to try, however possible, to explain himself to him. And to ask Edo to try — at least to try — not to judge him too harshly.
And then maybe his own reflection would finally show eyes that were clear of guilt.
Over two mornings, two lunchtimes, and two evenings, Blumi repeatedly called the Potolsky family to report that Mr. Ludmir hadn’t made any contact, and perhaps they needed to think of something more direct. But then, when Ludmir had actually called her back, she hadn’t understood anything he was saying.
“Please tell Mr. Yisroel Bentzion — I’m sorry, Mr. Yosef Ludmir — that I must meet with him,” the man said, in a dignified tone. His Australian English actually sounded very eloquent, but there was also an underlying European accent. He had also cut himself off a few times.
“Excuse me?” Blumi was confused. At the beginning of the conversation, the man had introduced himself as Joe Ludmir. So who was he talking about now?
“I’ll understand completely if…” He stopped for a moment and sounded like he was choking up. “If he doesn’t want to meet me. But I want to try and explain myself to him.”
“Mr. Ludmir,” Blumi said, “the Potolsky family wants to thank you for all that you have done, and to try and understand why you did it.
They cannot figure out your motivations. Elisheva’s father, for example, thinks that perhaps it was all a big misunderstanding.”
“I wish it was just a misunderstanding,” he whispered. “But it was intentional deceit. I…” He paused. “It was so hard for me, and looking back today, I cannot understand what I did. But it was not just a mistake; I must admit to that.”
“So there was a misunderstand-

ing, intentional or not?” Blumi could not figure out what the Australian millionaire was saying. He sounded completely confused. “Mr. Ludmir, I…I think that it would be better if you spoke with the Potolskys. I just helped them make inquiries, but maybe now it would be better if they contact you directly so you can sort things out.”
“Sort things out,” the man said. And he sounded like he was crying. Crying ! “I’m not sure that it’s possible, but I want to try.”
* * * * *
Eliyahu and Elisheva also didn’t understand anything at first. He must also be going senile, unfortunately, Elisheva scribbled to her husband on the back of an invitation that was on the kitchen table. It was late at night, and they were taking advantage of the quiet to place this transatlantic call to Mr. Korman’s partner.
I don’t think so, Eliyahu wrote back. “I don’t understand, Mr. Ludmir,” he said gently into the phone. “Why is it that every time you mention my father-in-law, may he live and be well, you say that his name is Yosef Ludmir? Maybe you’re mistaking the identity?”
“I didn’t make a mistake,” the
elderly voice said tremulously. “I made no mistake about that.”
“But that’s your name, isn’t it? My father-in-law doesn’t even know his original family name.”
“But I do know it.” The metallic tones of the speakerphone did not dull the cracks in his voice as he said these words. “I do know that he is Yosef Ludmir, Rabbi Potolsky. His mother told me that herself.”
Elisheva gaped at the red light on the phone. His mother! That meant, her grandmother! This man had known her. He knew details about her father and his family! No. No. No. This was a dream. It had to be. Suddenly, after decades, someone should appear who knew about her father’s past? This couldn’t be. It just had to be another sweet dream. Like all the sweet dreams that had made up this past year.
But those were not dreams. They had all really happened.
Although they hadn’t really happened, at least not in the ways they’d appeared to be happening. This Ludmir had been behind it all. Who was this man?
She bit her lips, breathing hard.
“Wait, so are you a relative?” Eliyahu asked the question on her mind without her even telling him to. “If you are also Ludmir…”
“No, I’m not his relative. We were friends in the orphanage in Bratislava. And then after the war…” He fell silent.
A long silence ensued.
“Hello?” Eliyahu asked cautiously, wondering if the man had hung up.
“Yes, yes, I’m still here…” the man murmured. “Please understand, it’s hard for me to speak… And I don’t know what you know and what not… But after the war, I was nine or ten, and I said that I’m him…” His voice became so hoarse that the words became almost unintelligible. “Yosef Ludmir. I took his identity. I took his assets. I took the life that your father-in-law was supposed to live.”
To be continued...

Trump Secures Diplomatic Gains for Israel
THE PULSE: President Donald Trump hosted Kosovo’s and Serbia’s leaders for a White House summit meeting. The purpose of the summit was to further the normalization of ties between the two countries. Kosovo declared independence from Serbia in 2008, but Serbia has, to date, refused to recognize Kosovo’s independence; it considers Kosovo’s declaration of independence to be null and void. The UN tasked the EU with fostering dialogue between the two countries. The Trump administration has also worked on healing the rift between Serbia and Kosovo. The White House ceremony celebrated the signing of an economic normalization agreement between the two countries. The administration hailed the deal as a historic step toward the
process of an eventual political agreement. The agreement itself was a diplomatic achievement for the administration and for U.S. Special Envoy Ric Grenell and National Security Adviser Richard O’Brien, who were both instrumental in its success. The deal’s unexpected side effect was that both countries agreed to establish diplomatic ties with Israel and move their embassies to Jerusalem. Kosovo is a Muslim majority country and will be the first Muslim majority country to recognize Jerusalem as Israel’s capital. Until the achievement of this diplomatic breakthrough, Kosovo had not recognized Israel, and Israel had refused to recognize Kosovo out of fear that recognition of Kosovo’s independence would grant legitimacy to Palestinian aspirations for statehood.
THE IMPACT: The recognition of Israel and both countries’ decision to move their embassies to Israel came as a surprise to many. It is a testament to how the Trump ad-
132 / THE MONSEY VIEW / September 9, 2020 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484
ministration has put the furthering of Israel’s diplomatic interests front and center in its dealings on the world stage. Historically Israel has had an overwhelming military advantage over the Palestinians, but the Palestinians have been a formidable foe in the diplomatic arena. The Trump/ Kushner doctrine on Middle East peace has turned this equation on its head. Trump has shown the Palestinians that if they continue to refuse to negotiate and accept a reasonable settlement, they will lose diplomatic support even among Arab and Muslim nations. Trump has used the United States’ economic and military leverage to pressure Arab and Muslim countries to recognize Israel and grant Israel diplomatic achievements. The benefit of this approach is that it may force the Palestinian leadership to acknowledge that they are losing their diplomatic advantage and that failing to reach an agreement with Israel can cause them to lose the support that they are accustomed to receiving. The American decision to move its embassy to Jerusalem, the successful UAE deal, and the Serbian and Kosovoian breakthrough have helped tighten the diplomatic noose on the Palestinians and have made them aware of the pitfalls of failing to negotiate a reasonable settlement with Israel.
Flashpoint Kenosha
THE PULSE: Kenosha, Wisconsin, has been the scene of riots and protests in response to the police shooting of Jacob Blake. Video footage of the shooting incident shows Blake walking away from cops toward his car, Blake attempting to enter his car, and an officer trying to pull him away from the vehicle and then shooting him seven times in the back. Police have pointed out that Blake had a criminal record and was ignoring a police officer’s orders. They allege that Blake had an officer in a chokehold at one point during the altercation. They also claim that Blake brandished a weapon. Eyewitnesses of the account question the police version of events, but investigators recovered a knife from the driver’s side seat. Complicating the narrative is that police are only allowed to use lethal force when an officer reasonably believes the subject poses a significant threat of serious bodily injury or death to themselves or others. Blake appears to be walking away from the officers and may not have posed a threat when the shooting transpired. Blake survived the shooting but is paralyzed from the waist down. Riots broke out in the city with widespread vandalism and looting. On the third night of protests, Kyle Rittenhouse, a seventeen-year-old self-appointed vigilante from a neighboring town of Antioch, Illinois, traveled to Kenosha and shot and killed two protestors. Rittenhouse was arrested and charged with six counts, including first-degree intentional homicide, first-degree reckless homicide, recklessly endangering safety, and possession of a dangerous weapon. Rittenhouse’s lawyer claimed that his client acted in self-defense and that video evidence of protestors wrestling with his client backed up his defense. However, ABC
News established that the video footage is a struggle that took place after Rittenhouse had already fired shots from his AR-15. The ensuing tussle was with those who were attempting to take the AR-15 out of his hands and prevent him from shooting others.
PRESIDENT TRUMP: The president’s response has been to stress law and order and blame Democrats for the chaos in the streets. The president traveled to Kenosha on Tuesday and met with local business leaders and law enforcement. The president did not meet with Jacob Blake or his family. President Trump also refused to condemn the actions of Kyle Rittenhouse and said that Rittenhouse appeared to be acting in self-defense. He noted that the incident was under investigation.
JOE BIDEN: In a speech in Pennsylvania, Joe Biden forcefully condemned the violence and looting in Kenosha and other cities but also focused on the need for police reform and the importance of holding officers that abuse their power responsible for their actions. He publicly condemned the president’s defense of Rittenhouse. Biden believes that addressing the black community’s grievances is necessary for establishing long-term law and order. Biden traveled to Kenosha on Thursday and met with the father of Jacob Blake.
THE IMPACT: The divide and divergent approaches of President Trump and Joe Biden concerning calls for racial justice and the ensuing civil unrest have become major fault lines in the presidential campaign. President Trump believes that he has the upper hand on this issue and that undecided white suburban voters will entrust him to end the lawlessness. Wisconsin Governor Tony Evers said that he would have preferred that both candidates stay away, as he would “prefer that no one be here, be it candidate Trump or candidate Biden.”
Fraternal Order of Police Endorses President Trump
THE PULSE: President Trump secured the endorsement of the country’s largest fraternity of police officers. The vote to endorse President Trump for reelection was unanimous. In a press release, Patrick Yoes, the organization president, said that “President Trump has shown time after time that he supports our law enforcement officers and understands the issues our members face every day.”
THE IMPACT: The endorsement is significant for Trump, as it bolsters his credentials as the “law and order” candidate. The endorsement was strategically released as it was publicly announced just a few hours after Joe Biden revealed that he received 190 law enforcement officials’ endorsement. Biden also received the endorsement of 107 former state attorney generals who lauded his commitment to “eliminate abuses of power” and his belief in “common sense law enforcement.”

Biden Adds More Republican Endorsements
THE PULSE: Former Michigan Governor Republican Rick Snyder added his name to a growing list of Republican officials who have crossed the aisle to endorse Joe Biden for president. Snyder penned an op-ed in which he made the argument for his decision. Snyder faulted Trump for his failure to unite the nation and for “bullying” his opponents. Snyder stated that while he was endorsing Joe Biden for president, he remains a Republican and will continue to publicly support Republican candidates at the local, state and federal levels. Snyder joins John Kasich (OH), Bill Weld (MA) and Christine Todd Whitman (NJ), as the fourth Republican governor to express support for Biden. Four former Republican senators, Jeff Flake (AZ), David Durenberger (MN), Gordon Humphrey (NH) and John Warner (VA), have also endorsed Biden. According to a tally compiled by Forbes, over 100 Republican officials have endorsed Biden.
THE IMPACT: President Trump’s support remains solid among his base, and it is doubtful that these endorsements will erode his support among his most ardent supporters. However, these endorsements may have an effect on independents and Republicans who are sitting on the fence and are uncomfortable supporting a Democratic candidate. Trump secured victory by a small margin of votes in states such as Wisconsin and Michigan. Even a small number of voters breaking in the opposite direction may prove costly for him.

I have a confession to make. I love making lists.
I have a list for everything: a grocery list, an errands list, a what’s-for-supper-this-week list, a things-that-aren’t-so-important-but-need-to-get-done list. Should I go on? I could, but I’d rather not scare you off with my list-making obsession.
However, when it comes to planning a menu, my mind goes blank. Completely and utterly blank. It’s as if the list- and chart-loving part of my brain just closes its eyes and pretends to be asleep. Time and again I’ve tried, but come erev yom tov, my menu plans are just a bunch of doodles and words that don’t really make too much sense. Or any sense. It’s somehow harder for me than all the yom tov shopping and then returning, cooking, baking, and everything in between.
Yet I’m not one to surrender easily, and so when I was tasked with creating a yom tov menu for you, dear readers, I accepted the challenge. Armed with a notebook and a pen, I sat myself down at my dining room table and vowed to remain in that position until I’d have an entire yom tov menu down pat.
Well, after four hours of sitting hunched over my table surrounded by what seemed like an avalanche of crumpled papers and too many empty coffee cups, victory was finally achieved!
And now I’m so excited to share my sample yom tov menu; it’s full of easy and simple ideas and provides a clear guide for when to serve what for all your yom tov meals. Use this as a rough draft for your yom tov prep, and feel free to add or change whatever doesn’t work for you.
As I wrote last week, I know the thought of being all done for yom tov may seem like a fairy tale, but having your yom tov cooked, baked, planned and stored in advance is actually really doable. And necessary! A planned menu just ties it all up with a bow!

I remember the conversation I had with a good friend that turned into a heated discussion and soon had me explaining myself, rather emphatically. The topic? Saying yes to freezing food in advance. To Sury, the mere idea of eating anything but fresh food for yom tov seemed unpalatable. Her mother used to cook and bake everything fresh, because “the taste is just not comparable, and that’s a fact” (her words, not mine). I tried envisioning what an erev yom tov might look like in the household of her youth — her mother slaving over the oven and stove, a gazillion things on the todo list and the rush, rush, rush and pressure, pressure, pressure that comes along with the chaos.
So I tried (hard!) to convince her how life-changing it can be to freeze foods. Yes, the taste stays the same. No, the foods don’t have a “freezer taste.” Yes, you can freeze just about everything. Yes, doing so can save you time, energy and avoid stress. It’s a win-win situation.
At first Sury hemmed and hawed, but then she decided it’s worth a try. And when yom tov came around that year, she was calm, cool, collected and actually had some time to spare! In her words: “Rivky, you saved my life. Preparing yom tov food used to be so pressuring, and this year I actually got to sit with my family and really enjoy it.”
So to all of you out there who are like my friend used to be, if I convince just one of you to start prepping yom tov in advance, I’ll consider this worthwhile.
Step 1: Cooling
• You don’t want to put a container of piping-hot soup or stew — or anything — directly into the freezer. There’s a risk of it heating up the rest of your frozen food. So let it cool on the counter for up to two hours; if it’s still warm, stick it into the fridge. Once the food has cooled to room temperature, you can freeze it.
www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484 September 9, 2020 / THE MONSEY VIEW / 151
Step 2: Freezing:
• If you’re freezing foods for a short period of time, wrapping them in plastic bags or cling wrap is adequate. Make the wrapping airtight to decrease the chance of freezer burn, which is what gives food a “freezer taste.” Freezer burn (which occurs when food is exposed to air) can change the food’s texture and color.
• For longer freezing periods, use wrappings such as heavy-duty aluminum foil, special plastic freezer bags (available at your local grocery), or freezer wrap.
• Don’t freeze in glass jars unless you know they’re freezer-safe. Glass that hasn’t been tempered has a risk of shattering — particularly if you’re freezing a liquid that could expand as it freezes. So skip the canning jars and go for Tupperware or freezer bags instead. Always remember to leave some extra space in jars or containers because foods expand during freezing.
• Packages should be secure and airtight. Clearly label your pan/jar/container with its contents and the date it was packaged.
Step 3: Storing
• You can store soups in gallon-size or quart-size freezer bags, which can be placed flat. They freeze quickly.
• Freezing small servings enables it to freeze quickly, and it also allows you to defrost only the amount you need.
Limit the amount of times you open and close your freezer. Think of it like opening an oven door while a cheesecake bakes — the more you open it, the flatter and less tasty the cheesecake will be. The more you open your freezer, the greater the chance for food to get that dreaded freezer burn.
HOW LONG CAN YOU FREEZE THAT?
Meat and poultry
• Beef (steaks): 6 to 12 months
• Lamb: 6 to 12 months
• Chicken and turkey (whole): 12 months
• Chicken and turkey (parts): 6 months
• Ground meat and poultry: 3 to 6 months
• Franks: 2 to 3 months
• Cooked meat, beef and poultry: 4 months
Prepared meals:
• Broth: 3 months

• Kugels: 3 months
Bread and grains
• Challah: 4 months
Desserts and baked goods: Cookies (baked): 6 to 8 months

Step 4: Defrosting:
In the refrigerator: This is the easiest method, but it takes a long time, so you must plan ahead. (One pound of meat can take an entire day to thaw.) Advantages to this method are that it’s hands-off and the refrigerator keeps food at a safe temperature.
In cold water: Sealed packages of food may be thawed in cold water. Place the package under water in a bowl, pot or sink until the food is defrosted.
At room temperature: Pastries, breads and fruits may be thawed for 2 to 4 hours at room temperature. Do not use this method for meat, fish and vegetables.
FROM FREEZER TO THE TABLE:
Potato kugel: Defrost by pouring water over the top of the kugel, and cover it tightly. Place a pan of water on a lower shelf and keep in the oven overnight at 250°.
Lokshen kugel: If you’re family likes it cold, like mine does, let it defrost on the kitchen counter.
Cherry pie/muffins: Defrost on the counter.
Compote: Defrost on the counter.
Cakes/cookies/pies: Defrost on the counter.
Challos: Place in a pan in the oven or on the blech and reheat for about 15 to 20 minutes.
Soups: Remove soup from the container, place into a pot, add a little water, and reheat on a small flame on the stovetop or blech
Candied carrots: Defrost in the oven or on the counter.
Noodles: Heat in the oven or on the blech
NOT FOR THE FREEZER:
Kreplach: Defrost on the counter or place directly into the soup.
Kneidlach: Defrost in the oven or on the blech
Meats: Defrost in the oven or on the blech
Breaded cutlets (frozen raw): Defrost and fry fresh.
Egg rolls (frozen raw): Defrost and fry fresh.
Desserts: Defrost on the counter.
Cabbage noodles: Heat in the oven.
Gnocchi: Heat in the oven.
Gefilte fish: Defrost in the fridge. Kishke: Place in the cholent.
Stuffed cabbage: Heat on low flame on the stovetop or in the oven.
Franks and blanks: Heat in the oven.
• Salads: When prepping salads for the meal, keep dressings in separate containers marked with the name of the salad it is for. You can cut up veggies the night before or the morning of the meal, and keep them in an airtight container. Toss salads in a bag for the easiest, cleanest and most even mixing results.
• Pretty desserts: Leave time for the Ushpizin desserts so you can patchke and have fun.
• Chicken cutlets/egg rolls (fried fresh, but can be prepared in advance and frozen raw)
• Cholent
• Hard-boiled eggs
• Fish
• Potato salad
• Cooked potatoes
• Onion rings

Chuck-Eye Roast in Wine
A while back, my good friend Esty kindly shared this recipe with me, and ever since then I’ve been using it weekly for my Shabbos meat — and everything in between. Yup, it’s that good. Thank you, Esty!
INGREDIENTS
1 chuck-eye roast (or brisket, flanken or other similar cut of meat)
½ cup oil
4 tsp. paprika
4 tsp. salt
4 tsp. black pepper
3 tsp. garlic powder
1 tsp. onion powder
2½ cups red wine
DIRECTIONS
1. Cover the bottom of a baking pan with parchment paper.
2. Pour the oil over the roast, coating it well.
3. Mix together the spices. Rub this spice mixture all over the meat until it is completely covered.
4. Add the wine to the coated meat, being careful that the spices don’t get washed away.
5. Cover the meat with another piece of parchment paper, and cover the pan tightly (you can use aluminum foil).
6. Optional: Marinate the meat in the refrigerator for a few hours.
7. Preheat the oven to 300° and roast for 4 hours.
8. Slice the meat only once it’s cooled.

Mushroom French Roast
I’m a mushroom addict. Those who know me know that I enjoy mushrooms in any way, shape or form. So now that we’ve established that, you’ll understand why I say that this is my absolutely favorite recipe. And even if you’re not a mushroom-lover, try it anyway! It’s a guaranteed crowd-pleaser.
INGREDIENTS
1 French roast
3 boxes mushrooms, all different varieties (portobello, baby bella and so on)
1 bottle Gefen onion-and-garlic barbecue sauce
¼ cup teriyaki sauce
Sun-dried tomatoes, for garnish (optional)
DIRECTIONS
1. Slice all of the mushrooms.
2. Cover the bottom of a pan with parchment paper, then with a layer of mushrooms.
3. Place the meat on top of the mushrooms.
4. Mix the barbecue sauce with the teriyaki sauce and pour it over the meat.
5. Cover the pan tightly, and bake at 325° for 4 hours.
6. When serving, garnish with sun-dried tomatoes, if using.

Rosemary Braised Brisket
If you’re looking for something different, you’ve turned to the right page. This brisket recipe is not your run-of-themill meat. The rosemary really packs that extra punch and brings together all the flavors.
INGREDIENTS
3 lb. first-cut (or flat-cut) brisket
4 tsp. kosher salt
1 flat tsp. freshly ground black pepper
½ tsp. cayenne pepper
BRAISING LIQUID
2 T. margarine
1 large yellow onion, sliced
1 tsp. kosher salt
4 cloves garlic, sliced
1 T. minced fresh rosemary
1 cup apple juice
DIRECTIONS
1. Preheat the oven to 325°.
2. Season both sides of the brisket generously with salt, black pepper and cayenne pepper.
3. Melt the margarine in a saucepan over medium heat. Add onion and salt. Saute until translucent, stirring throughout, about 5 minutes. Stir in garlic, rosemary and apple juice. Increase heat to high, and boil until the liquid is reduced to about half, about 3 minutes.
4. Spread half of the apple juice–onion mixture across the bottom of a pan. Place the brisket on top, fattyside up. Cover the brisket with the remaining apple juice–onion mixture. Cover the pan tightly with foil.
5. Bake in the preheated oven for 1 hour 30 minutes. Then, reduce the oven temperature to 250°, and bake until fork-tender, about 2 hours 15 minutes. Check if done after 2 hours.
6. When the brisket is ready, transfer it to a plate. Pour the onions and braising liquid into a large container or bowl. Puree with a stick blender to form a gravy.
7. Slice the brisket across the grain, and serve it with the gravy. Alternatively, you can pull apart the brisket and serve it in tacos or in a nice mound.

MY FRIENDS, WE HAVE BEEN GIFTED AN INCREDIBLE OPPORTUNITY.
It’s an opportunity that we have not experienced in years, and an opportunity we hope never to be presented with again.
The year that is drawing to a close has been one without parallel in the recent past. The majority of us have been raised under stable world conditions, with few dramatic surprises that truly altered our day-to-day lives in a prolonged manner. Yes, many have suffered tremendously over the years, but that suffering was generally of individuals, on a personal level. Rarely has there been a recent instance of upheaval on a broader, communal or national level. This year, we stood together as we each stood alone. Around the globe, we were united in having to confront a whole new challenge of a world of Yahadus within the walls of our homes.
THE MONSEY VIEW / 175
Many, if not most, looked and continue to look for a reason, for logic, for a message that Hakadosh Baruch Hu is trying to convey to us. What does He want from us?
What does He want us to correct?
Ultimately, as we hear cascades of voices clamoring to define the moment, we are painfully aware that, truly, we are incapable of an absolute answer. We have no navi. We don’t have an Urim V’Tumim. We are driven by a most honest and meaningful determination to turn the situation into one of lessons and growth, but we do not have the ability to make definitive national declarations or assessments.
On the other hand, we can’t merely walk away from such events with a simple shrug of the shoulders. Hakadosh Baruch Hu does not leave anything to chance, and He has custom-tailored every minuscule detail of these events for a specific purpose. As such, although we can’t make bold statements, we
can and must do some basic introspection. We can’t be looking to others, telling them what they must improve, but we can and must look into ourselves, to see where our personal struggles and room for growth lie, and to take concrete steps to move forward and higher.
To reframe the conversation, let’s leave aside the “why” of what we’ve experienced. Instead, let us focus on the realities we have in front of us so we can work toward building something meaningful. We do not know why our shuls were forced to close, but we can recognize the reality of their closure as an opportunity for tremendous growth, and we can seize the moment.
FOR MOST OF US,
it has been many years since our first starryeyed trip to shul. As our childhood faded, so did our initial awe and reverence, the feeling of walking

into a hallowed space. Our mentality evolved, and we began viewing our shuls as a welcoming place of gathering; a place of kedusha, of course, but a place of interaction with our friends and neighbors as well. The symbiosis of kedusha and social interaction, while a beautiful feature of our communal structure, nonetheless reduces the reverence of these sacred spaces.

something about eating in shul. A handful of negative encumbrances. Now picture asking a friend who has just returned from being oleh regel in Yerushalayim to describe his trip to the Beis Hamikdash. Would he sum it up by saying it’s a place you can’t talk? A place in which you’re not supposed to sleep? It’s a most spectacular place! It’s a place where one greets Hakadosh Baruch Hu, a chance for an unparalleled, otherworldly interaction! It’s alive with tangible kedusha, and Yidden are thrilled to be there, standing in awe of the One Who calls it home.
We need to completely reshape our whole perspective, viewing our visits to shul as a most remarkable experience, much as we would view ourselves walking up the mountain to the Beis Hamikdash.
Our shuls are very much a piece of that Mikdash. In so many ways, they are modeled after the same physical structure; most importantly, they host those same interactions. We can’t afford to have our perspective of shuls defined as a collection of negative rules. We need to completely reshape our whole perspective, viewing our visits to shul as a most remarkable experience, much as we would view ourselves walking up the mountain to the Beis Hamikdash. The reason I act differently in this room is not because the rules leave me no choice, but rather because I can actually feel how unique this place is, and I would never want to tarnish such a remarkable environment.
TISHA B’AV STANDS ONLY WEEKS BEHIND US, a day when our Mikdash was taken from us. Why did we lose it? The accepted approach would be to say that we had simply filled the quota of misdeeds, and after seeing enough, Hakadosh Baruch Hu decided the time had come to let out His wrath and punish us for what we had done by ejecting us from our home. Rav Shamshon Rephael Hirsch, however, provides us with an entirely different understanding.
The loss of the Mikdash was not an act of destruction, but a desperate, lifesaving wake-up call to Klal Yisroel.
We are told that the true point of connection between each person and Hashem is intended to lie within the person himself.
“V’shachanti b’socham — b’soch kol echad v’echad miYisroel.” Every one of us carries within ourselves our own unique portal, our own ability to connect with Hashem. Unfortunately, as Klal Yisroel marched through the desert centuries ago, their repeated errors brought them to the point where this was no longer possible. The internal bond was damaged, and for a viable hope for the future, we would now need the assistance of an outside source. This was the Mishkan, and this was the Beis Hamikdash: central

points of kedusha, whereby a person could supercharge his ability to connect by simply visiting the place and tapping into the powerful system present there. These structures were not, however, intended to be a goal and purpose unto themselves; they were designed to serve as a bridge, a way to facilitate a person’s drive for something higher, a way to connect man and Hakadosh Baruch Hu, and thereby allowing that connection to bring Hakadosh Baruch Hu into that person’s daily life.
Unfortunately, the system became skewed. Rather than a tool for assistance, the Beis Hamikdash came to be viewed as an end of its own. People became perfectly content to go through life with no real effort to connect, without striving for growth, with no real development of their internal relationship
with Hashem. They would satisfy their ruchnius with a feeling that as long as the Beis Hamikdash was functioning, with the day-to-day jobs getting done, then that was enough. The feeling was that the ruchnius could stay comfortably confined within the walls of the Mikdash, and man would do whatever he felt like doing in his own life. Essentially, what had been intended to serve simply as a crutch now replaced the need to walk.
Hakadosh Baruch Hu saw this situation and determined that the only way to save Klal Yisroel was by shaking them awake and pulling away the crutches. Suddenly, a person realized that he really had a problem, for he really didn’t know how to walk. With the loss of the Beis Hamikdash, life was forcibly returned to the original format, where each person would have to struggle to build his own personal link from within. It would make
building the link so much more difficult, but it would force people to wake up from the illusion, to realize that all along they had truly been lacking. Hopefully, this awareness would drive them to reassess and rebuild their relationship with Hakadosh Baruch Hu.
WE WERE NOT, however, left to fend entirely for ourselves. While we lost the supercharge that was the Beis Hamikdash, we were left with miniature “charging stations” in every community across the globe. Step inside, put in the effort, and your connection will come alive. However, these locations as well must be understood as bridges. Our shuls don’t exist simply as community centers; they are tools for us to use in our striving to connect to something Higher.
Unfortunately, with the passage of time, we tend to lose focus of that goal of connection, and we see tefillah, and houses of tefillah, as a place to simply fulfill our tech-

nical obligations, to check off the boxes. We can go through years of actions without stopping to realize that these actions were merely tools to fast-track an element to which we simply aren’t paying enough heed. If we were to understand and develop our potential for a real and tangible connection with Hakadosh Baruch Hu, our tefillos and our appreciation for the concept of a beis knesses would come alive.
But we are human beings. We have had years of water pass under the bridge, and cement can’t easily be recast once it has set.
And then came COVID-19.
Suddenly, we were shul-less. The mold of our daily lives was shattered. And with it, we suddenly received the chance to start anew. For the first time in years, we’ve been gifted the “first-time-in-shul” experience.
We don’t know why Hakadosh
Baruch Hu closed our shuls, but whatever the reason, the reality of their closure forced us to walk without crutches, to daven and attempt to connect without the normal stimulation of a shul environment and the power of the crowd around us. Suddenly, as we stood within the privacy of our own walls, we were forced to look ourselves in the eye and question exactly how strong our connection with Hashem is when the external factors are stripped away.
The power of this assessment gives us the fuel to grow. We can walk into our shuls with a fresh, revitalized start. We’re starting anew. It’s not a question of learning about and committing to assorted halachos, or doubling down on enforcing shul policy. It’s about changing our whole paradigm, a chance to awaken to the true beauty of our shuls, to imbue within ourselves the feeling of entering a miniature Beis Hamikdash.
Yes, we will learn the appropri-

ate halachos
Yes, we will commit to real adherence.
But we will do so with the understanding that the laws alone are not what define the shul; they are an outgrowth of a powerful concept — a concept that is the true definition of a shul
WE HAVE BEEN GIFTED the opportunity to reboot. We can make this monumental. Let’s not allow this opportunity to slip through our fingers.

Outside mold doesn't always stay outside. For instance, mold on your roof may soon find its way into your attic. . Outdoor areas with significant amounts of mold puts your health at risk. Children are particularly susceptible to mold-related health problems, so mold around play areas is especially hazardous. Mold can damage your home, whether it grows inside or outside. Some materials are more easily damaged by mold than others. Mold will literally eat away wood over time. Almost all materials will be damaged by mold to some extent given enough time.

“Bye,” I call out, closing the door carefully behind me. The kids shout, “Bye, Mommy!” My husband calls, “Be as quick as you can!”
I breathe deeply as the elevator carries me down the three flights in our building. It’s Erev Rosh Hashanah, and I haven’t yet had the opportunity to buy my children their basic clothing or accessories for yom tov. Between our move in the summer, my youngest sister’s beautiful but hectic chasunah just three weeks later, and having my four small children hardly settled into their various schedules, the clock seemed set on fast-forward. I kept trying to catch up with time, but it slipped away, like an egg yolk running through my fingers.
And now, just hours before two of the most holy days of the year, I peer ahead, eyes focused forward, concentrating on reaching my destination with all possible speed.
I gallop through the shopping center, particularly pleased with a number of items I pick up at a department store. I check my phone for the time as I head toward the line at the register. Still fifteen minutes until I have to leave, I think, relaxing after my sprint.
There are roughly six or seven people waiting to check out, but I’m not worried; with three cashiers available, the line should shrink at a reasonable pace.
Five minutes pass. I have not yet moved even one place forward. One customer at the register has at least an additional half a basket to empty; the cashier closest to me is having trouble with an argumentative buyer; and the third… aha, the third finally finishes! The snaking line ambles forward a few centimeters, and I shuffle behind the person in front of me with a groan.
This is crazy, I calculate in a slowly rising panic. If each person takes an average of five minutes, I’ll still be ages!
A customer emerges from between the racks of clothing with a small child whimpering next to her, and she approaches one cashier. “He can’t find his mother,” she says.
The employee steps away from the cash register to deal with the emergency, and I groan again.
“Make the line move forward,” I mumble to the unseen ear of the One Who’s al-
ways listening. “It’s yom tov soon!”
Three minutes later, still standing in the same spot, I become desperate.
“Please, Hashem, make them move faster,” I plead. “Let half the people leave the line. Let me be able to pay already! You know I really need this stuff!” I’m conscious that I appear to be talking to myself, but I’m too frantic to care.
The woman before me in the line fingers the small accessories attractively displayed next to the registers. I am too distracted to do the same; I just want to pay and leave.
When I glance at my watch two minutes later, I’ve inched only one more place forward. My thoughts turn to the hot vegetables sitting on my counter that need dividing, and the dirty kitchen awaiting my attention. With five people still waiting to complete their transactions before me, it seems impossible that I will be able to purchase my items with the remaining minutes I have before I must hurry home.
And still I’m waiting for the line to magically move forward, mumbling to the One Above to let the cashiers work at double-speed.
And then an employee steps around the fourth available register. I don’t notice him until he calls, “Who’s next that’s paying cash?”
Ten seconds pass.
“Cash only,” he calls again.
I look at the five people waiting in front of me; no one moves.
“I am,” I exclaim, and rush past the impatiently waiting customers, whispering my gratitude for this genius solution.
I pay with my crumpled bills, head for the exit, and dump my bags in the car.
I push the elevator button in my building and ride up to my waiting family. I feel Hashem’s constant presence comfortingly nearby, and it’s more transparent now — not just in my brain, but also in my heart. I resolve to improve on my constant self-reminders that He’s the One in charge, despite my grandiose plans — and that when those plans fail, He is the One Who sets things right.
The Yamim Noraim are coming, and I am home just in the nick of time.

THERE’S SOMETHING UNIQUE ABOUT SUKKOS.
On this yom tov we get to appreciate and enjoy decor and crafts, and they’re elevated to an actual mitzvah! Whether your family’s sukkah has a new look every year, or if you always display the same arts and crafts the kids created over the years, this wall art can fit just about any style. You can copy the exact pattern shown, or use this as an inspiration to make your own beautiful creation!

1. Separate the two parts of each embroidery hoop, and tighten the loose screws.
2. Working on a covered surface, arrange the hoops according to the design shown, or create your own pattern.
4. Choose 3 or 4 hoops to cover in twine. Start by knotting one end of twine onto the hoop, then repeatedly crossing the twine across the diameter, creating a pizza-like spider web design.
Supplies
Embroidery hoops
Choose a variety of sizes. I used 2 large, 3 medium and 2 small hoops
Twine
Hot glue gun and glue sticks
Faux flowers
Use flowers and colors that work well together
Plastic cable ties
About 15 pieces
Scissors
Eucalyptus stems
Hooks (for hanging)
3. Interlock as many screws as possible. You don’t want them to be exposed, and this makes it easier to cover them up with the floral design.
5. Knot the second end of twine around the rim of the hoop.
6. Secure the twine with dabs of hot glue where the twine crosses the rim of the hoop.
7. Using plastic cable ties, secure together the hoops. Cut off the ends of the ties. Use hot glue where necessary to secure the hoops.
8. Lift one end to check that all the hoops are connected, and add glue if necessary.
9. Arrange the flowers (don’t glue them yet) on the hoops. Rearrange them until you’ve created a look that you like. Be sure the flowers cover all screws and plastic ties.
10. Use hot glue to secure the flowers in place.
11. Step away from your creation to make sure you like the design. You may want to add more flowers at this point.
12. Attach eucalyptus stems near each flower bunch with hot glue.
13. Attach hooks to your sukkah wall, and hang your beautiful art from them.

Before we head over to shul to daven this Rosh Hashanah, let’s take a virtual tour of some old-time houses of tefillah in greater New York.
לארשי תיראש תליהק
CONGREGATION SHEARITH ISRAEL, UPPER WEST SIDE: FIRST KEHILLAH IN THE U.S.
Founded in 1655, Congregation Shearith Israel is the oldest recorded kehillah in the United States.
It all began with a group of 23 refugees escaping the Inquisition whom Peter Stuyvesant wished to expel, having no desire for Jews in the colony of New Amsterdam. Even once granted permission from the Dutch West India Company to settle in the area, their religious rights were limited. The members were allowed to worship only “in all quietness within their houses.”
The Portugese community in Amsterdam sent them a Sefer Torah.
Often referred to as the Spanish-Portuguese Synagogue, the kehillah followed Sephardic custom, even after many Ashkenazim joined. In fact, since it was the only local kehillah, all of New York’s Yidden belonged to this congregation for nearly two centuries — until German immigrants established their own in 1825.
The shul rented quarters on Beaver Street and Mill Street before being granted the privilege to build their own shul in 1730.
The current building (on W. 70th Street in Manhattan) was built in 1897.
Despite faltering relations with other sects, Shearith Israel remained fully Orthodox.
ןורושי תדע להק ELDRIDGE STREET
SHUL, LOWER EAST SIDE: WELCOMING EASTERN EUROPE
12 Eldridge Street on the Lower East Side was more than just a shul; it was a welcoming address where new immigrants from Eastern Europe came to be fed, find jobs and housing opportunities, and more.
Established in 1887, this was one of the first shuls opened by Eastern European Yidden in the United States.
For about 50 years, this beautiful Victorian structure seated close to 1,000, with a membership of some 800 families. The crowds were so large that on the Yamim Nora’im, police were called upon to enforce order on the streets outside.
Then, as members moved to other areas and immigration quotas limited new immigrants, membership dwindled.
A small kehillah continues to daven in the beis midrash downstairs, having rarely missed a Shabbos or Yom Tov tefillah since its opening. Today, a museum stands on-site, offering tours on the history of the Jewish Lower East Side and an inside view of the restored shul

CONGREGATION ANSHEI LUBAVITCH, BORO PARK: BORO PARK’S FIRST
The building at 4024 12th Avenue is home to the first and oldest surviving shul in Boro Park.
It was originally built for Temple Beth El, an Eastern European kehillah, in 1906 when Boro Park was a brand-new neighborhood for Yiddish settlers.
Beth El outgrew the brick building and sold the site to Chevra Anshei Lubavitch in 1922. Young Israel Beth El moved to 4802 15th Avenue.
In 2017, the property was sold for $3.1 million, sparking controversy. Some wished to have this prominent 114-year-old shul landmarked and preserved. After all, proponents argued, the shul shaped the budding Jewish community of Boro Park.

Officially the oldest kehillah on Long Island (which includes Brooklyn and Queens), Bais Yaakov Ohev Shalom is one of the last remnants of the non- chassidish community that thrived in Williamsburg until 1960.
The shul was originally established in 1869 as an Orthodox breakaway from a Reform congregation. Its founders were of German descent. Today, it is perhaps the last Nusach Ashkenaz shul in Williamsburg.
Its current home at 284 Rodney Street, just south of Broadway, was constructed in 1957 after the previous building was demolished to make way for the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway.
In the 1970s, the congregation had 700 members. By 2010, that number had dwindled to some two dozen mispallelim

TURN-OF-THECENTURY DRIFT
It is sad to note that many early New York shuls were founded in the 19th century as Orthodox, but turned to Conservative and Reform factions.
The Young Israel movement was initiated in 1912 to counter this trend.
The problem: Yiddish was the spoken language, and an Eastern European atmosphere pervaded the Orthodox shuls. This made American-born progeny of the members feel out of place. They either stopped attending shul or turned to Conservative or Reform.
The solution: Under the slogan, “bringing American youth back to the synagogue,” the far-seeing founders projected a shul prototype that endeared the shul experience to the youth while following proper halachic standards.
Soon, shuls across the United States banded together under the Young Israel umbrella, breathing fresh Orthodox life into the next generation.
— ןרהא תיב הרבח לעביטש עשיליופ POLISHE SHTIEBEL, WILLIAMSBURG
It all began when Yidden started moving over the bridge from the Lower East Side to Williamsburg. Some former mispallelim of the socalled “Nine un Ninetziker Shul,” a famous chassidish beis midrash on 99 Cannon Street on the Lower East Side, looked to create a chassidish minyan
They established the “Polishe Shtiebel” on Division Avenue in 1913, and it soon became a center for Torah and tefillah for the few chassidim in Williamsburg at the time.
The shul housed a full library of seforim, which was quite rare in those days and drew crowds to learn nearly 24 hours a day.
On Shabbos afternoons, Yidden knew they must come early to learn; otherwise, they wouldn’t have a seat! In fact, one of the gabba’im veered from the custom of calling out the time of Mincha after Shacharis on Shabbos morning. “There’s no need,” he said. “The mispallelim go home, eat their seudah and a short while later they are back to learn. With everyone here anyway, we can simply klap out Mincha then.”
When the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway cut through the Avenue, the shtiebel moved to its current location at 154–156 Ross Street. The lot was purchased for $19,000!
In time, some Torah Vodaas talmidim began to frequent the minyan, eventually taking over the shul. Soon that crowd dwindled as well, making room for alumni of Yeshivah Shaarei Yosher, who still daven and learn there today.
GENERAL SHUL STATS
Until 1795, all documented shuls were Sefardic, though some hosted Ashkenazi members.
Most rabbis in late-1800s New York did not speak English. Rabbi Samuel Isaacs, Rav of Shaarei Tefillah in the Upper East Side, was an exception. He was ardently Orthodox, but upon his passing in 1877, the kehillah sadly turned to Reform.
The First Hungarian Congregation Ohev Tzedek, on the Lower East Side, was treated to Yossele Rosenblatt as chazzan from 1911 to 1926 (and again in 1929).
The Magen David Synagogue, a Syrian shul in the Bensonhurst neighborhood, is the only landmarked shul in Brooklyn.
Congregation Chasam Sofer at 10 Clinton Street, Lower East Side, was built in 1853 and is the longest-standing Orthodox shul building in NYC.
It is sad to note that many early New York shuls were founded in the 19th century as Orthodox, but turned to Conservative and Reform factions.

BAIS YISROEL, MONSEY: MONSEY’S FIRST SHUL FOR BAALEI BATIM
For years, Bais Yisroel was the only minyan for baalei batim in Monsey. Before the shul at 92 Main Street arose, circa 1961, the minyan davened in a room in Bais Medrash Elyon, across the street.
When the time was ripe to build a shul of their own, each of the forty members pledged $250 to the building fund. Some two or three wealthier members donated more.
One unusual amenity at the time was the mikvah, built on-site.
Bais Yisroel is the “father” of many shuls in Monsey. When there were enough Yidden of German descent, they broke off and formed a Yekkishe shul Other local shuls were also breakaways from Bais Yisroel.
Nusach Sefard has always been davened at Bais Yisroel. Periodically, there would be meetings to discuss various parts of the tefillah and what should be davened. The shul was a very central part of life for the mispallelim
