DAVID NISSEN NC Bringing you the latest scientific research with the most sophisticated supplements available. ... He is my savior in my frustrated and illusive case of Candida (Fungus). For two years since my first attack of pain, tingling and numbness in my mouth, I started a round of doctors. I followed through a regiment of medications, but remained in the same condition... It was then when someone mentioned Dr. David Nissen. He was highly recommended, and ב”הI was not disappointed!!! At my first session, Mr. David suggested a few very effective vitamins. I immediately felt the cure come on. It has been almost three months since my encounter and I finally could see the light, not to mention I feel the taste of food again...
After so many attempts to resolve my health issue, I was shocked to see positive results after only one week of being under your care. I feel like a new person, Baruch Hashem! Thank you so much for being the right shliach!
Dear Rabbi David Nissen ’שיחי, I would like to take this opportunity to Thank You for being the right שליחin helping me get out of my problem. I’m suffering from anxiety and panic disorder for the last 3 years. I’ve tried so many different things but nothing has helped. Until recently I heard about you and decided to give it a try. You were extremely honest, and very compassionate. I tried your vitamins... and wonder... I feel like a new person !ב”ה You said that you would help me with my H. Pylori and Thrush, and it did the job. Whereas my doctor’s medication was useless. I am very thankful!

Dear Chaim’s Mommy, Stop feeling guilty! You have every right to go to your niece’s chasunah and not feel guilty! Of course the story shook you up, but that does not mean that you did something wrong! I would only advise that the friend who babysat Chaim do something to their door so that no other children can get out on their own. Thanks for sharing! Seeing Hashem’s hashgacha was heartwarming!

“THE PARTY GOER” AND THE BABYSITTING DILEMMA
I was not sure what message to take out of last week’s story from in our town. Was it that I shouldn’t go to simchos? Or that my eighteen-month-old should come along to a simcha? There are times when children need to be left behind. I don’t leave my kids over at other’s homes much, but when it comes to a simcha, or ch’v the oppositethere sometimes is no choice. Children don’t belong coming along all the time. On a similar note, I am completely baffled when it comes to finding a

Your Voice THE PROPER WAY TO TEACH
I had an experience which I would like to relate to my fellow mothers/teachers/mechanchim etc... After submitting a test for course that I took, I was delighted with the good mark I received. A few days later, I learned that my mark had been changed from a 94 to a 98! Baffled, I called to inquire about the change in my mark. The following was their response: “When we review all the students’ tests and we see that most students got a specific answer wrong, we take responsibility for not teaching it clearly enough, and therefore you get credit for it.” Teachers! Please do not try to trick your students on the tests. The point is to see whether you know how to teach the material so the students can learn. Mothers! If our children are not getting good marks, then we have to find a way to get through to them. Hatzlacha on your teaching and parenting! A Mother for Proper Teaching
CRACKS IN THE SYSTEM
I’ve been following the changing face of Monsey debate, and felt that people are being overly antagonistic towards the newcomers. After all, everyone has the right to move to a new community if they so choose. I really couldn’t understand it at all, and then the issue hit a little too close to home... My block is one big construction zone, and that hasn’t bothered me; I really don’t mind the influx of new
34

people, or even the hammering and banging. I did however, mind tremendously when my ceiling almost crashed down on my toddler’s head... Baruch Hashem, it narrowly missed him, but after hours of cleanup, and traumatized children, I did some research into why my ceiling possibly fell... Since the beginning of the fall, there have been cracks running up and down my walls, not only making my home unsightly, but also carrying the threat of the plaster falling- as it did with the ceiling. I learned that neighboring construction may cause structural damage due to shifting earth and vibrations. Today, I noticed another massive crack, and although I haven’t yet hired a professional to evaluate my home’s foundation - I do know that the workers next door are unprofessional, having already damaged another neighbor’s property. I can only image that the same thing happened to mine. After all, my house is more than a hundred years old and had never had a crack until construction began... I welcome the new neighbors, but ask the builders to be professional and careful, and caution the homeowners to document any damage to their home. The value of your home can drop tremendously if damage occurs. Be warned! A Wary Homeowner

person, and I also happen to be a tenant. I pay an inflated amount of money which is disproportionate to the services rendered by my landlord. In order to protect my identity, I am not revealing the blaring details of neglect of the flat which I moved into. I was told basically, “Tough luck! You want it? You fix it up!” After fixing it up, I realized too late that the place was not soundproofed. Shabbos is no longer a restful day, since I do not set foot into my bedroom. It is under the children’s playroom. I try to work around the situation by staying away. Fight or flight? I choose the “flight”. My question: are there any by-laws to protect the rights of tenants? Must I live with the noise? Dirt? Neglect? Lack of cooperation? Is there any way to hire a gardener to maintain the property by mowing the lawn in the summer, or blowing the leaves in the fall, as a result of legal intervention? There are huge puddles in front of the property. Will the city come to check if there is a real problem? Whom do we call? l cannot expect a landlord to fix up the mess. Unless.... there are definite legal guidelines involved with a penalty of a fine. I would appreciate an extensive response to the questions: Do tenants have legal rights in Rockland County? What are the by-laws for the landlords? Is there a law to soundproof a second or third floor apartment by putting down wall to wall carpeting? Are there codes regarding the outside up-keep of the house and garbage and snow removal? Maybe we just need a re”View”? Disillusioned Tenant

WeighSmarter “number on the scale”? You may become sad, upset, depressed and even angry with yourself, all because you’re dancing up and down the scale.
WHY USE A SCALE?
By Esty Weiss
Are You Addicted to the Scale? If you step on the scale more than once a week, you may be causing yourself a great deal of mental agony. One can only imagine the distress if you weigh yourself daily—or even hourly! When you are struggling with extra weight, or if you are simply self-conscious about your current weight, weighing yourself frequently is very common.
WHAT’S THE ISSUE? First of all, it’s impossible to gain or lose five pounds of fat in a single day! What is possible is to see a five-pound fluctuation when you weigh yourself each day. This can drive you nuts, making you want to step on the scale just one more time (and then another … and another) to see if anything has changed. If you were to study how Hashem created the physical body, I would definitely think you’d have much less of an issue with the scale. If you’re aware of how different circumstances can cause these fluctuations, you’ll understand that the time of day or month, how recently you’ve eaten or exercised, or even the temperature, can cause your weight to fluctuate. Why would you want to ruin your day by fixating on the

I consider the scale a good indicator of how you’re doing over an extended period of time. I would say that once a month is sufficient when it comes to gauging your progress; in fact, the only reason I approve of people weighing in once a week is because that’s much better than three times a day! And besides, weighing in once a week is a very standard protocol at many diet centers, and people are boxed into the idea. In truth, the tape measure, the mirror and your clothing are your best sources. A question I often ask people is this: If you want to be a size 8, and you reach that goal but you weigh more than you thought, does that still bother you? Many people still say “yes,” because they want to see a specific number on the scale, while others are satisfied that they’ve reached their target size and are willing to overlook the numbers on the scale. This question comes up quite

often as well: If I’m really losing weight, then why aren’t the numbers dropping drastically on the scale?
THE ANSWER: You’re not losing body fat—or maybe just a tiny bit—because temporary weight loss typically comes from water, muscle breakdown or from the fluctuations I mentioned previously. That may be just fine with you, but “real fat-loss” is hard work; and if you follow a precise fat-burning plan and incorporate sprints into your exercise regimen, then you will become slim and melt away your body fat! The most important thing is your health, and with that comes burning fat for fuel instead of starving your body (which usually doesn’t even work in the long-term). I’m sure that if you look closely, you will see a huge difference in the appearance of a person who is losing mostly water and muscle weight compared to a person who is mostly losing body fat. The former tends to look unhealthy, wrinkled, and as some call it, “tzamgebruchen.” In turn, the latter usually appears healthy, glowing, energized and fit. And in truth, the looks are what you’re seeing, but if you look into the blood work of both
people you might see a real difference in terms of what’s going on inside the body as well. Losing extra body fat is healthy, while losing muscle is not! It would be very helpful for you to understand and accept that it takes time to improve your fitness and health! As much as you want to wake up tomorrow morning looking different, that’s simply not the way the body works. All bodies have their own time-regulating mechanisms, so having some patience is key. If you’re following a balanced fat-burning food plan with specific exercises, then trust that your body will show you results! And you won’t figure this out by running to the scale every hour. Now, if you’re not following anything, or if you “know” that you just treated yourself to some good stuff, then why bother jumping on the scale? You didn’t even digest those latkes yet; they haven’t even had the chance to be stored as body fat, and you’re already looking at the numbers? Be fair to yourself and your family. If you are doing okay 95 percent of the time, then it will show (unless you have a medical condition or are taking certain medications). On the other hand, if you treat yourself more often than you should, that will show
as well! You don’t need a daily weigh-in for that. If I hadn’t tried it myself, I would still be clueless about the best ways to lose and track my weight. I tried going on to the scale more than once a day for a few days, and it was really laughable! I didn’t change my eating habits or exercise regimen, and every time I stepped on the scale I saw a different number. Really? I gained two pounds in the last ten minutes? I hadn’t even done anything, so how could I possibly weigh a pound less in the afternoon and four pounds more at night? I did it for trial purposes, so I found it funny, because I already knew the truth behind weight fluctuation. I did, however, start feeling very bad for those who take the daily five-pound fluctuations to heart, especially when the entire day is affected by the fluctuations. Look in the mirror or at your clothes, and go by the way you feel; and visit the scale once a month for your own inner peace and sanity! See next week’s subject of ”Why Fats Don’t Make You Fat.”

“I would implore you to take a look at [Innate Health]. It’s an extremely accessible and common sense approach to life.” Rabbi Michel Twerski, Milwaukee, WI “Learning about the principles at a rough time in our marriage was G-d sent. Instead of advice and pointers to seek out painful memories, we were suddenly given a fresh start.” “What hasn’t changed? Overall, I feel hopeful and equipped to deal with whatever comes my way.”
Shabbos
Parshas
Shemos By Rebbetzin Malka Teitelbaum
At the beginning of parshas Shemos, Yosef, his brothers, and their entire generation passed away, thus beginning a new stage of development for Klal Yisrael. This marked the first time that none of the avos and none of Yaakov’s sons were alive to lead and guide our people. We were on our own for the first time. The situation was growing darker and darker. The Mitzriyim felt threatened by our growth and success, so they began to oppress us more and more. They hoped that if they could crush us physically and emotionally, we would not have the strength to rebel against them. The suffering increased until the b’nei Yisrael finally cried out in anguish. “Vayishma Elokim es na’akasam vayizkor Elokim es briso es Avraham v’es Yitzchak v’es Yaakov.” “And Hashem heard their cry and He remembered His covenant with Avraham, with Yitzchak, and with Yaakov.” (Shemos 2:24) This was the turning point, and the beginning of the yeshua. It is important to note the language here. The Torah does not say that Hashem saw our suffering and therefore saved us. The Torah says that Hashem heard our cry, and therefore saved us. This is stated again in Shemos 6:5-6: “V’gam Ani

shamati es naakas b’nei Yisrael…” “And also, I heard the cries of the children of Israel, whom the Egyptians are holding in bondage, and I remembered My covenant. Therefore, say to the children of Israel, ‘I will take you out…’” Likewise, Hashem put an end to the wickedness of Sodom in response to the cry of Sod-

Hashem hears our cries, and He responds. om’s victims: “Vayomer Hashem zaakas Sodom v’Amorrah ki rabbah….” “And Hashem said, ‘The cry of Sodom and Amorrah is so great…’” Hashem had been waiting for us to cry out to Him, to daven to Him, before bringing our salvation, just as He waited for Adam HaRishon to daven for rain before he brought rain to water the earth. The Sefer Hachinuch says, in mitzvah 433, that there are three components
to the mitzvah of tefilla. First, there are many things that can only be brought about through davening. Second, we are commanded to daven. Third, if we do daven, we are rewarded for it. Hashem - and only Hashem - holds the key to our salvation from each and every problem we encounter in life. From big to small, the Source of our salvation remains the same. We must ask Hashem to release us from our troubles. We must ask again and again, and never give up hope. So many times we give up too soon. Hashem might not be saying no, He might be saying, not yet. Even if we don’t see or feel the results, we must continue to cry and beg for our salvation. We are suffering on so many levels. We are suffering on a communal level the many pains of galus. We are suffering as individuals as well, each one carrying his or her own peckel of problems. We do not have to wait until our suffering reaches a breaking point. We can cry out now. Hashem hears our cries, and He responds. He listens to our tefillos. He is waiting for our tefillos. With 20/20 hindsight, we can clearly see that in every country where we dwelled throughout each exile, we did not belong there - no matter
Baila’s Beautique how well we may have been accepted, and no matter how well we may have flourished. We clearly did not belong in Egypt, even before they began to afflict us. We clearly did not belong in Babylon. We clearly did not belong in Poland. We clearly did not belong in Germany. We do not belong in Monsey either – it is just another stop along the way in our journey through this galus. Baruch Hashem, we are not suffering here. B’chasdei Hashem, we are flourishing here. For as long it is Hashem’s will for us to live here, we must live here, and we
We do not belong in Monsey either – it is just another stop along the way in our journey through this galus. Baruch Hashem, we are not suffering here. can enjoy the many wonderful aspects of living here - but in an ultimate sense, we do not belong here. If the b’nei Yisrael had cried out sooner, they might have been redeemed sooner. If that is the case, then why are we not crying out now? During times of suffering we wake up to the fact that we do not belong, and we finally cry out. We do not have to wait for that to happen. Let us realize now who we really are and what we are really here for, so that can feel the pain of galus more, and cry out now that our Tatty in himmel should bring us home. Let us all cry out to Hashem to send us the geula shaleima, once and for all.

Q&A
Two Halachos at a Time By Rebbetzin Y. Weissmandl
Q
May I use resources such as dictionaries and atlases on Shabbos?
A
Yes, they may be used. However, if the map is inside a phone book, it may not be used, as a phone book is muktzah. A map alone or an atlas of maps is muttar, as is cited in the Shulchan Aruch.
Q
If a child is holding a dangerous item that is muktzah may I take it away?
A
One should shake the child’s hands to remove the item. If he doesn’t release it, then it may be removed.

Stone THIRTY CHAYA’S STORY:
I sat at the table. Sleep tugged at the edges of my mind and then let go of me, slinging me forward into giddiness. We took turns sleeping these days, since Chuna needed a bed, and Malka’la needed her own. Today I wouldn’t be able to fall asleep anyway, so I sat and watched out the night. I was afraid. I was marrying off a daughter, sending her into the world. Knowing what I knew, my stomach clenched in fear and I prayed, I prayed. I understood that I could never protect her even when she was here, and I hadn’t protected her, not from want, not from pain. But the thought of sending her out made it real. I’m handing her future back to the Bashefer, the One Who entrusted her into the world. The shutters were drawn but I could see the inky blackness beyond it through the little cracks. The night stretched with uncertainty. Malka’la padded out into the kitchen, the hair mussing out of her braid in all directions

Recap: After walking around frantically, not knowing how to break the news to his family that the shidduch might be over, Duvid enlists the help of the shadchan, Esther Perkowitz. I’m handing her future back to the Bashefer, the One Who entrusted her into the world. “It’s okay. I’m fasting,” she says. “I know. But not yet. It’s before daybreak. You need strength.” The milkman hadn’t come yet, and there was little I could offer. A fruit. A persimmon. “Eat,” I said. She wasn’t hungry. She nibbled at the fruit but then left it on the table. Persimmon isn’t a night food. She needed milk. “I don’t usually eat before noon, anyway,” she said. “Noon?” That’s late in the
seudas mitzvah. I yawned, deeply. “Mama, will you please sleep in my bed? I’m up already.” I shook my head. No. Dawn would be cracking over the horizon soon. Malka’la sat down near me. “My soul chose to come into this family, into your loving hands. I want to thank you for having me, for raising me. I’m going to pray for you today,” she said. My eyes were moist, but I noticed that the sky had turned

indigo. Malka’la stood. She went to the alcove and reached up to the top shelf. She pulled something down. Hurried back to the table. It was her linen set. Ever since I assured her she could have whatever she needed, she worked on it. She labored over it in the mornings, its tassels stitched painstakingly around and around the edge. “You deserve it,” I said, meaning it fully. “It’s for you,” Malka’la said. “I want you to have it.” “Chas v’shalom!” My eyebrows were too close to each other, I could feel it by the furrow between my eyes. “It’s a gift. From me. I want to give it to you.” I looked at her. Words failed me. “I want you to know, when you sleep, when you make the beds, how much you have given me. Just by being. This is my way of saying thank you. Please accept it.” “I can’t. It’s for you.”

“I have two more. The Feldman twins sewed them for me. They’re gorgeous.” “Such beauty belongs in a new home,” I protested. “Not here.” Malka’la waited, saying nothing, regarding me with open eyes. I ran my hand over the linen, stitched with so much love, created with an artistic flair. She wanted me to have it. Me. The linen she wanted so much. How would I sleep on it? Would I have to get used to receiving, to lying on such a luxurious thing? How would it feel? Would it take me out of my familiar sense of suffering? Malka’la was still standing, hesitantly next to the table, her hand on the linen set. Her pose reminded me of the day she had asked, the day she hesitantly begged to sew this exact linen set. For me. “Thank you,” I said. I put my hand on top of hers resting on the linen cloth. She drew closer. I hugged her tight. “Thank you for choosing my family,” I told her. From the bedroom, there was more stirring. Duvid woke up. “Should we go to the Kosel?” “Yes,” Malka’la says. Her voice was eager.

We walked out into the fresh dawn air and hurried down alleys and streets. We arrived at the Kosel, and there, right up ahead, was Golda Goldreb, her husband and son two steps in front of her. She turned and smiled, grasped my arm, and dislodged a string of brachos onto me. She hugged my Malka’la, and Malka’la pecked her on the cheek. The sun was coming up more golden from the side of the hills and suffused us with a special, festive air. I was glad we could ignore the unsaid, and stand together in simchah and prayer. When we arrived home Zelda was already in my house, bustling around the small space as if it were her kingdom. Faiga’la was in her wedding dress, her hair expertly braided into a round head wrap. Zelda shoved a flower into the knot in her hair and Faiga’la yelped. “B’sha’ah tovah,” she told me with a kiss. “Malka’la, this is your special day,” Zelda told her, and Malka’la nodded in return.

One would think you never made a salat when I married off my children. This is the day for you to do nothing. You are marrying off a daughter. Zelda ran outside and brought back a beautiful, snow-white dress. She helped Malka’la slip it on. Is this really happening? I wondered. But I didn’t say it aloud. “It’s really happening,” I said. “The kufteles of fish are already made. Elka is cooking a big soup. It’ll be enough for everyone. A few of the neighbors are doing salatim. off my children. This is the day for you to do nothing. You are marrying off a daughter.” She placed a small sprig of flowers into Malka’la’s hair. Then she hung three necklaces around Malka’la’s neck and placed a row of bracelets on her arms. “Thirteen,” she said, triumphant. “The other eleven pieces will arrive soon. My Devorah went around the neighborhood to pick up the 24
jewels. She’ll be back soon.” Malka’la hid herself in the salon while we bustled around. It was time for me to slip into my festive clothing. But first I needed to prop up Chuna in his wheelchair, curl his peyos, straighten his white shirt. I needed to make him look good. It was almost afternoon, almost time for the chuppah. To be continued…

NEVER MIND THE CAKE Malky Deutcher
"Why didn't she send me a cake?" I thought every time I brushed past my neighbor in the stairwell. I was a new neighbor in the apartment building. Didn't that deserve any recognition? I guess Tova didn't think so. Since I'd move into my apartment adjacent to Tova's, I hadn't merited a semblance of a wel-
who I really should have been inviting. Neighbor in apartment five had a daughter three months older than mine. Maybe, just maybe, the toddlers would strike up a friendship? But then I remembered that my neighbor never took the trouble to befriend me. So what? I suddenly thought. Perhaps I should try and strike up a friendship. Why was it that I tried to go out of my way to befriend many people, except my neighbor next door? That was a difficult question. I had to plumb deep inside of me to find the answer. Was it because she hadn't extend her friendship? Perhaps I had been so consumed with begrudging her lack of friendliness that I forgot that I needed to do my part. Or maybe it was that niggling inferiority complex at play. If my neighbor wasn't being friendly, did that render me unworthy of enjoying a friendship? It was as if I subjected myself to her authority. Like if she didn't show interest, it spoiled our chance at a relationship. That's it, I decided, I could try and get a relationship going. Why did I have to try less than she did? So I knocked on her door. I felt my throat go dry. How embarrassing, to beg for friendship! But to my surprise, she seemed pleased at my offer.
Why was it that I tried to go out of my way to befriend many people, except my neighbor next door? come. Yes, she said a shy hello when we bumped into each other for the first time, but hadn't made any other gesture towards starting a neighborly relationship. Now, this wasn't the kind of thing I expressed to anybody; I was even embarrassed to feel that way. It's kind of pathetic to vie for recognition. It felt better to nurse the "I-don't-needanyone-I'm-just-fine" attitude. But I couldn't ignore the fact: my neighbor's lack of acknowledgment hurt me. So we lived, side by side, or rather, back to back, for years. She in apartment five, I in six, but no more than an occasional egg or a nod in greeting passed between us. One day, my toddler was bored. She wanted a friend over. My baby had grown up. A few candidates crossed my mind. Was Esther's daughter from down the block an option? Or would my four-year-old niece do? For some reason, none of the choices seemed right to me. Maybe it was because I knew
56

She was only too happy to oblige. "Why, they'd make the perfect pair," she enthused. So‌ she was interested. Our toddlers indeed made the perfect pair. They provided entertainment for each other constantly, a blessing for a busy mother. And slowly, Tova and I found ourselves at each other's doors almost on a daily basis. It would have had to take two hermits not to get swept up in a relationship. At first, it was awkward, perhaps forced, but with time it evolved into a natural, enjoyable twosome. Wow, was I glad that I had knocked on my neighbor's door that day. Not only because my child had found a friend, but even more so because I had done the right thing. I had sparked a relationship where there ought to have been one. So my neighbor lacked the

Or she was just the quiet type. Actually, it didn't really matter what the reason was; I had to try. Our children's friendship went strong throughout their childhood. And as my child grew up with her friend, so did I.

Now is the perfect time to take advantage of the large variety of apples available. Apples are so in season now; the following three recipes will help you come up with delicious ways to use them. When buying apples, look for apples that are firm, brightly colored and free of bruises. Apples that feel soft are overripe and will have a mealy texture. I prefer Cortland apples for the following three recipes, since I find those yield the best results when used in cooking or baking.

BATTER: 1 stick margarine 1 tablespoon vanilla sugar ½ cup sugar 2 eggs ¾ cup flour ½ teaspoon baking powder ¼ instant vanilla pudding
3 tablespoons coffee whitener 1 container vanilla custard 3 cortland apples, peeled and grated TOPPING: ½ stick margarine 3 tablespoons sugar 1 teaspoon cinnamon
Preheat oven to 350. Combine margarine, sugars, eggs, flour, baking powder, instant vanilla pudding and coffee whitener in a large mixing bowl. Beat well until all ingredients are incorporated. Divide batter among 15 muffin holders. Place a heaping tablespoon of custard over batter in each muffin holder. Place a heaping tablespoon of grated apple over the custard. Combine margarine, sugar and cinnamon in a bowl. Microwave for about 30 seconds or until margarine is melted. Stir to combine. Using a spoon, drizzle the melted topping over the grated apple. Bake for 30 minutes. The muffins will still be slightly jiggly when you remove them from the oven.
These muffins are extremely versatile. They can be used as a side dish or as a dessert along with a scoop of ice cream. No matter their function, they are out of this world. I usually use the fluted standalone muffin holders for them.

APPLE CRUMBLE SUNDAES 1 container vanilla ice cream APPLE BASE: 6 cortland apples, peeled and chunked ½ cup sugar 2 tablespoons lemon juice
Oat Crumble: 1 stick margarine ½ cup brown sugar 1 cup slivered almonds ¾ cup old fashioned oats ¾ cup flour
Caramel: 1 ¼ cup sugar 1 cup whip topping, unwhipped 1 teaspoon lemon juice ¼ cup soy milk ¼ teaspoon vanilla extract
Combine apples, sugar and lemon juice in a pot. Cook covered over medium heat for 20 minutes, until apples are soft and mushy. Remove from heat and set aside. Preheat oven to 350. To prepare oat crumble, combine margarine, brown sugar, almonds, oats and flour in a large bowl. Mix well by hand until crumbs have formed. Transfer mixture to a lined cookie sheet and bake for 15 minutes. While crumble is still warm, break into pieces. To make the caramel, combine sugar, topping and lemon juice in a pot. Cook over medium heat until sugar dissolves and bring mixture to a boil. Stir until caramel turns a light brown color. Pour in soy milk and extract and mix well. To assemble: layer warm apples in the bottom of a dessert glass; add the crunch and a scoop of ice cream. Drizzle caramel over the ice cream.

The Election Process By Ruchel Lebovits
PRIMARIES VS. CAUCUSES A Primary election is like any standard local, state or federal election. Voters will go to their designated polling places, fill out the ballots with their selection of candidates, and the votes will be tallied by the board of elections after the close of the polls. While most states hold primary elections, a handful of states hold caucuses. Instead of going to a polling place, voters attend local private events run by the political
settled in a group, a winner is declared according to the candidate who has the largest group of supporters. The caucuses are actually held every two years, but the ones that receive national attention are the presidential preference caucuses held every four years. In addition to the voting and the presidential preference choices, caucus-goers begin the process of writing their parties’ platforms by introducing resolutions. One of the most famous states to hold caucuses is, of course, Iowa - being that it is the state that’s officially starts off election season. Ironically though, the caucus does not result directly in national delegates for each candidate. Instead, caucus-goers elect delegates to county conventions, who, in turn, elect delegates to district and state conventions where Iowa’s national convention delegates are selected. The state conventions do not take place until the end of the primary and caucus season. Iowa is, in fact, one of the very last states to choose its delegates. The Republicans and Democrats each hold their own separate set of caucuses subject to their own particular rules that change from time to time. Observers are allowed to attend, as long as they do not become actively involved in the debate and voting process. For example, members of the media and cam-

Caucuses are generally defined as “gatherings of neighbors.” Rather than going to polls and casting ballots, voters gather at a set location in each precinct. Typically, these meetings occur in schools, public libraries and even individuals’ houses. At a caucus, supporters for each candidate have a chance to make a case for their favorite candidate, and everyone in support of that candidate will gather in a group. For a group to be viable, it has to have a minimum percentage of voters present. If a group is too small, the voters will disperse and join other groups. Once all participants have

paign staff and volunteers attend many of the precinct caucuses.
OPEN AND CLOSED PRIMARIES AND CAUCUSES In open primaries and caucuses, members registered to both parties can vote for any candidate they see fit. So a democrat can vote for one of the republican candidates and vice versa. This, of course, gives the opposing party the opportunity to vote for the worst candidate for the opposing party rather than the best one. In a closed election, a voter can only vote for a candidate running for his party. In semi-closed or modified primaries, voters registered as Independents can vote for either of the two major parties. In all of these systems, a voter can only participate in one primary. So in an open primary, if a democratic voter has chosen to vote in the republican election ,he can no longer participate in the democratic election.

With just over a month left before the first primaries, candidates are redoubling their efforts trying to secure as many votes as possible. On their end, pollsters have continued to put out the data they’ve collected, shifting support from one candidate to another or securing a particular candidate’s position. Polling is an interesting science. There are many companies conducting polls using different formulas, but all pollsters want to get the broadest possible representation of the general public. In recent years, some polls have been shown to be embarrassingly inaccurate. In 2012, Mitt Romney was predicted to beat President Obama, albeit by a small margin. President Obama, of course, won that election comfortably. In

The Living Room
P
lanning your home can be an enjoyable and exciting process as you watch your dreams come true. But before that can happen, you need to take a step back and think about every room in your house and how you hope to maximize its potential. Start with the front exterior of your house and envision yourself walking into your entry and what expectations you have for that space. Do this for each room in your house, keeping in mind your family’s needs and your personal preferences. As you plan your home, consider your current living space and what improvements would make your life easier. If you find yourself getting stuck on any particular room, take a break for a day or two and then give it another try. Remember that while others may try to influence your decisions with helpful suggestions, don’t get confused. Stay focused on your family’s needs which are your top priority.

THE LIVING ROOM Some people use their living room as a place where they entertain guests while others view it as an extension of their dining room. Because both the living room and dining room are used for similar occasions, it is advisable to keep these rooms close to each other so that your guests can dine and relax at the same time. No matter how you envision your living room, it is best to keep it simple, neat and airy. When it comes to living rooms, it is all about making the space airy and inviting, so if you have the square footage, try going for a more expansive room if you can. While a good sized living room can range anywhere from 13 to 20 feet, even a smaller space can look nice when customized by a designer. No matter what size your living room, keep the area proportioned in order to have space to arrange your furniture comfortably. • High ceilings can visually double the size of the room. Not only does it make the room seem bigger and airier, a big plus when you have a lot of company, but it gives the space a relaxed feeling. Avoid high ceilings in smaller rooms since they actually make the area seem even more diminutive. • Don’t underestimate the importance of proper lighting. Reading lights can be placed next to sofas and ceiling mounted spotlights can be extremely practical as well. Sconces make great wall accents, adding a decorative touch to your walls. A center fixture is a great look in a larger living room, although it can be overpowering in a living room-dining room setup. • Keep seating areas relatively close to each other to allow for comfortable conversation without having to raise your voice. Positioning your coffee tables 18 inches from your sofa keeps everything within easy reach. • Think out of the box when it comes to placement of your sofas. While they are commonly placed against walls, sofas can be placed anywhere in the room, even in the center, in order to maintain a well-defined furniture cluster. • Because you want your living room to be as relaxing as possible, it is advisable to keep the area clutter free. A designated area, a nice piece of furniture or a storage ottoman are all great places to stash items like blankets and reading materials when not in use. If the above ideas exceed your budget, don't despair. With careful planning and the help of a professional designer many of these suggestions can be adapted in creative ways to make your home a dream come true.

CHOOSING A FOCAL POINT
WALLS
Try to be original when planning your living room. If possible, go for an unusually shaped room, such as an octagon, circular, or bay wall, particularly when the living room adjoins the dining room. A few strategically placed wall niches, which can be used to display plants, books and other items of interest, will give your room extra character. Large paintings also make great focal points, just be sure to keep the space around them clear since too many items on the same wall can create a sense of clutter.
WINDOWS Windows are a one-time expense that provide a lifetime of enjoyment so try to include as many as possible. Bringing the natural beauty of the great outdoors into your home, windows provide natural light which promotes relaxation. Longer windows will make your room look higher and if you have high ceilings adding transoms on top of your windows will give you maximum light. Keep your windows simple and let the sun work its magic.
FIREPLACES Fireplaces provide elegance and a feeling of warmth. Center your fireplace on the wall and create a grand atmosphere by extending the face of the fireplace all the way up to the ceiling. Bookcases or windows on either side of the fireplace are also great decor elements. If your room is very large, consider situating your fireplace in the corner, spreading your focal point onto two walls. By positioning your sofas facing the fireplace, you can appreciate its beauty while also enjoying your company.
CREATIVE SOLUTION If you choose to have doors to your living room to keep the room off limits on a daily basis, consider glass pocket doors which are there for use, yet can also be concealed to give the image of a large arch opening. JUST SAY “NO” TO THE ELEVATOR • You needn’t allocate exercise time to get a good workout. Stair climbing is officially classified as a vigorous exercise. Here’s why you should opt for the stairs: • You burn a calorie for each ten steps up and twenty steps down. • Stair climbing is great for those short on time, as they are usually are headed up somewhere during the day anyhow; it’s just a matter of not giving in to the temptation of using the elevator. • Even two minutes a day of climbing stairs goes a long way in keeping you fit. • Are you worried that you may be wasting your time by taking the stairs? It actually seems like it’s usually the more time-efficient alternative, as in buildings that have five floors or less, it’s nearly always quicker to take the stairs.
RACE TO THE TOP - OF THE WORLD’S LONGEST STAIRCASE If you are ready to take on that challenge, it would mean climbing up the 11,674 steps of the world’s longest staircase, located on the face of Mt. Niesen in Switzerland, part of the Swiss Alps. For safety reasons, the staircase is normally closed to the general public. But one day a year, in June, it is opened up for the world’s longest singlestaircase race – the ‘Niesen Treppenlauf,’ otherwise known
as the ‘Niesenlauf.’ Want to join a staircase race, but this one sounds too daunting? There are similar stair races held in different areas in the world, including the Empire State Building, where 86 flights—1,576 stairs, are race-climbed. (In total, the Empire State Building has 102 floors and 1860 steps.)
NO ROOM FOR ERRORS If you would have observed the staircase in the subway of Sunset Park in Brooklyn in the summer of 2012, you would watch person after person trip on a specific step, some steadying themselves, but others not faring that well. What went wrong? Upon investigating, the MTA learned that one step was ½ inch shorter than the rest. It takes a step being even a centimeter off for people to trip. After a person takes the first couple of steps, his brain will automatically learn and record the distance he needs to extend his foot in order to reach the next step. And if a subsequent step is not almost precisely the same distance away, a tripping hazard is created. This also explains why a person can sometimes take an additional step even after he has reached the ground, sending shockers to the foot and finally waking him up from his trance. (Or does that only happen to absent minded folks like I?)
HOW SPIRAL STAIRCASES WERE BORN In medieval times, castles were always built with spiraling staircases built clockwise. This was a purposeful design element that served an incredibly practical purpose; the idea was that incoming siegers
As an avid quote collector, I’d like to share one of my favorites:
78
/ T HE MONS E Y V IE W
“The elevator to success is out of order. You’ll have to use the stairs... one step at a time.”
By Batsheva Honig
ascending the stairs to attack would be at a huge disadvantage in the way of their sword arm, as most people are right-handed. On the other hand, castle occupants descending the stairs would be given the advantage of a staircase designed with their sword-arms in mind.
ACCESSIBILITY WITH STAIRCASES As wonderful as they are, staircases can often be a barrier to people with disabilities, preventing them from getting to places. The ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) is a federal law that requires most business and facilities to provide reasonable access and accommodation for everyone. There are many nuances to the law, and accessibility can include ramps, elevators, or lifts where feasible. Otherwise business should provide methods of allowing customers to access a service without coming into the store. (An example would be that a takeout on the third floor without an elevator or ramp should provide delivery.)
THE STEPS ARE MOVING! Charles D. Seeberger was an inventor who the world over, prevents millions of people daily from getting their exercise. But I will admit that I am very grateful for his invention! He produced the first step-type escalator manufactured for use by the general public. His creation was installed at the Paris Exhibition of 1900, where it won first prize. Seeberger sold the original patent to Otis Elevator Company where he was an employee. Although numerous improvements have been made, the basic original design remains until today.
Because really, in life, it’s the hard work that B’ezras Hashem gets us places.
INNOVATIVE STAIRCASES
Got boys? Or tomboys? This one’s for you. Walk up and slide down!
Utilize the staircase space as storage space. Each stair is a drawer! Don’t forget to shut them before someone takes the stairs.
Here, the space beneath the stairs is used as a bookcase.

Journey of a Chesed Call:
Behind the scenes at dispatching By: Ruchy Reese
Every organization has its proverbial “stars,” those people whom everyone associates with the very life-pulse of the group. Many times however, there are other stars that shine just as brightly, but in a more “behind-the-scenes” manner; they are the ones who keep the wheel turning and things moving. Chaverim also has this modest group, quietly operating from within the confines of their own homes, providing vital services to those in need. While you’ll never see these people changing tires, pulling a car out of snow, or popping locks at a residence- without them, you’d be mighty stuck. I sat down with Mrs. Simkowitz- known as Base 1 to Chaverim members, and with Mrs. Tauber (Base 11), to learn what happens from the time a caller reaches out to Chaverim until help arrives. As dispatchers, they stand ready at the front line, helping callers in many different ways. Working very different shifts, (both of them hard ones in my opinion!) these two veterans make sure that your call for assistance reaches someone who’s able to help in your time

ˇ
of need. Mrs. Simkowitz, Chaverim’s original dispatcher, is one of the friendly voices answering the call for help in the middle of the night. “I’m a late night person,” she tells me. “Usually, at 2:00 am, it’s not yet night in our house.” It works out very well, for example, for chasunah goers, who in the excitement of the day, accidently lock their keys into the car. When the wedding is over and the chasan and kallah have already gone their way, there is nothing as devastating to a crowd of tired people as being unable to head home to a warm and cozy bed. With a sleeping child tucked into each arm during the pre-dawn hours, that tightly locked car might just be too much to bear; but luckily, Mrs. Simkowitz and her husband, Shlomo Lazer Simkowitz (Unit 5), both stand ready to take the call and pass it on to a member who’s ready and willing to make your life easiereven at the expense of his own sleep. When the late-
night shift finishes, Mrs. Tauber receives the reins from Base 1, and begins fielding the calls during the early morning rush hours. In between breakfast serving, hair-combing, and busloading, she takes the calls that come in from 7:30 am until 10 in the morning. Dispatching for 14 and a half years, she’s got it down pat. “My kids are very used to it by now; it’s part of the routine,” she tells me. “Each call doesn’t take long. I quickly take the call and put it in,” referring to the specially designed computer program that dispatchers use. On that note, we head over the Chaverim base setup located in a corner of her kitchen. “What kind of equipment did you have to have installed in your house?” I ask. She shows me the large, immobile radio base that costs a pretty penny to install, the cordless radio, and special phone line that allow her to take and dispatch multiple calls simultaneously from around the house, and Chaverim’s unique computer program, designed and maintained by Chaverim member Shloimy Spira (Unit 36). In all, before computer purchase and phone line installation, the hardware setup runs at well over a thousand dollars per dispatcher. I ask her to see these pricey gadgets in action, and watch, enthralled, as she guides me through a mock call. “I take your phone number,” she tells me, showing me how the history of each phone num-
ber pops up on the screen. We are able to see with just a glance how often Chaverim has been called by that telephone number for assistance, and what sort of assistance the caller has needed in the past. This bit of information can sometimes help the dispatcher and responding member receive a clearer picture of the situation at hand. Recording the phone number also enables dispatching to pass the contact information on to the responding member, meaning that while you are waiting for someone to open your car door in sub-zero weather- you can run into a neighboring store to warm up, knowing that someone will call you just before arriving to the scene. “Then I take your name, the location where you are, and the nature of the call,” Mrs. Tauber continues, scrolling down the list of the possible codes that come in. There is everything from “out of gas” to “pest control,” with plenty of other categories in between. There are around 50 different types of calls that Chaverim helps with, and of course, each situation has its unique story. “We try to collect as much information as we can, to avoid misunderstandings. Someone once called in about an auto lockout. I asked if there were kids in the car, and she responded, ‘Yes, my keys are in the car.’
Chaverim Tip: When calling for assistance try to have all information ready, including the name of the person needing assistance, phone number, location, and perhaps make and model of the car. Doing so will ensure that other callers won’t have to wait long, and we can send help to each caller in a timely fashion. It sounded like kids, and I gave it out as a Level Zero, meaning an emergency. The units ran! And then we found out it was only keys!” I chuckle at the story, as Mrs. Tauber continues to tell me about how important it is for each dispatcher to clarify the details of the call, including the village of the street called in - as there are several Nancys, Lauras, etc. in our parts. She then shows me how she announces the type of the call over the radio and waits for a member of service to respond, after which

she inputs his unit number into the computer, generating a message that is sent to his phone with the details of the call. The status of calls can also be accessed through an information portal that links each member electronically with the dispatching system. Mrs. Simkowitz then tells me that as Chaverim’s first dispatcher, she’s seen the times change. Sixteen years ago, when Chaverim first started out, she had a list posted on her wall of every volunteer. It listed various members’ special skills and their phone numbers. For every call that came in, she found herself standing in front of that list, evaluating which member would be the best fit for that particular call. Then she’d have to pick up the phone and dial each member, hoping that someone would answer and be available. It could take quite some time to locate an available member. Nowadays, the entire process is much more streamlined, but due to the tremendous growth of our community, the system will need an upgrade. At a whopping $200,000 bill, the system will be able to continue helping Yidden far and wide, even where the current radio system begins to fizzle out. Chaverim is just waiting for the funding to come in before they can upgrade, and

From January 2014 to December 2014, exactly 20,634 calls were handled by the team of dispatchers and service units. as a 100% volunteer agencythat may take a while. Due to my own husband’s involvement in Chaverim, I can personally vouch for the constant radio activity, and the important role that these radios play in this tremendous chesed organization, but I was honestly shocked when Mrs. Tauber answered my query of how many total calls came in last year. From January 2014 to December 2014, exactly 20,634 calls were handled by the team of dispatchers and service units. I was quite surprised at the staggering amount of calls that come across Chaverim’s radio system. On an average day, around 50 calls are fielded. During the winter the numbers rise exponentially, due to cars being stuck in snow, as well as burst tires and pipes caused by the frigid temperatures. So what happens when the calls come flooding in due to inclement weather? Over at Chaverim headquarters there is always a call center on standby, passively awaiting the moment that its multiple-dispatching systems will be put to good use
by the dedicated volunteers that will be helping Monsey’s residents throughout the duration of the storm. Even in the case of a power outage, the call center is prepared to continue working due to its hookup to a backup generator. It's great knowing that even while the rest of the world is holed up inside their cozy abodes, there are still dedicated individuals ready to brave the elements when one of the community needs assistance. I feel that I’ve seen a bit of chesed at its best, and I walk out shaking my head- amazed at the humble service of Chaverim dispatchers. It’s piqued my appetite to know more about this wonderful organization, and I look forward to continue exploring the world of Chaverim services with you next week. Due to time constraints we weren’t able to interview all of the dispatchers, but The Monsey View and Chaverim would like to acknowledge the dedication and heart that each dispatcher adds to the organization. Your service is appreciated!

DO TRY THIS AT HOME
At the time of year when the children are hard at work over their homework and textbooks, there’s nothing like mixing education and fun in a stimulating environment to help them realize that learning can be such fun. In that spirit, we present three educational museums to target different subjects across the curriculum.

52 minutes; leave time for traffic Whether your child is passionate about math, sees math as a boring subject, or struggles with understanding her math, this museum is a great place to cultivate a love for the wonderful world of numbers and geometry. The National Museum of Mathematics aims to dispel the notion that math is boring. The only institution of its kind in the United States, the museum features interactive
exhibitions demonstrating the connections between math and everyday subjects. The museum conveys the message that math is constantly around us, even if we're not thinking about it— and it gives pragmatic proof that math can be exciting and fun. (It's hard for even the most math-averse visitor to resist the opportunity to ride a tricycle with square wheels.)

TIME FOR HISTORY!
MUSEUM VILLAGE
Museum Village is a unique and inviting open-air historical museum which offers visitors the opportunity to explore vignettes of 19th century American life. Using a large collection of eclectic artifacts, the museum provides hands-on educational experiences and exhibits that illustrate the transition from a rural to an industrial culture and economy in America. Museum Village houses a blacksmith’s quarters, a wagon shop, a candle
shop where children can make their own candles, and a one-room schoolhouse which portrays how children learned the 19th century. There’s also a lot to see from farm life at that time; and you can even learn the process of broom making, starting from sorting the corn which the brooms were made of! Weaving, printing, and extinguishing fires- it’s all there as children learn about the life of “once upon”...

Museum Village has open hours from April November. The rest of the year is by group only. Please call 845-782-8247 ext 1 or email education@ museumvillage. org for more information.

TIME FOR SCIENCE!
LIBERTY SCIENCE CENTER
This 4-story museum with many activities offers an amazing interactive science experience, where children of all ages can learn and have a great time. They feature many interesting exhibits that change from time to time for people who visit more than once. There’s so much to do that you need to allocate a long stretch of time for this. Fun activities include a suspended jungle gym net that kids find to be loads of fun, motorized rock wall climbing, the Action Zone, the Touch Tunnel. The latter is a very popular attraction. . They cover many areas of science: chemistry, energy, animal life, the human body. The activities are as endless, as the learning is! One of the current fascinating exhibi-
tions is the Titanic. (Running from October 31, 2015 – May 30, 2016) It features more than 100 authentic Titanic artifacts set within replicas of cabins and other areas within the famous ill-fated ship. Upon entering the exhibition, visitors will be drawn back in time to April 1912, when the ship embarked on its maiden voyage. They will receive a replica boarding pass, assume the role of a passenger, and follow a chronological journey through life on Titanic—from the ship’s construction to life on board, to the moments of impact and sinking, and the modern day efforts to recover and conserve the wreckage for future generations. Visitors can even touch an “iceberg” to feel just how cold the water was at the time that the ship sank.

Your View on Winter:
Cozy Food and Drink, Cold-Weather Activities, and Remedies for What Ails in Winter Hot soups came in as the most popular winter food or drink, closely followed by hot cocoa. Many Monsey View readers also associate winter with hot tea and farina. Others include clementines or other fruits in that family, and hot coffee (which we suspect most readers do not drink exclusively in the winter, as it’s part of their daily diet). For a minority, winter foods are chestnuts on Friday night, baked apples, french toast, apple cider vinegar, roasted marshmallows, and eggplant paninis. Activities that Monsey View readers associate with winter are puzzle-making,
Many Monsey View readers feel that the secret to smooth, unchapped skin is constant moisturizing with hand cream. The following hand creams were recommended, in order of the most votes. • Vaseline • Dr. Fischer • Melaleuca Renew • Adwe • Eucerin • Neutrogena • Superlan • Aveeno • EZnurse • Chapstick • Mary Kay hand cream • Cetaphil spray • Beauticontrol hand and lip cream One reader, whose son was suffering from a severe case of chapped skin discovered this wonderful product, which she found to be the only thing that helped: Mira's Natural Lip Balm and Mending Salve sold by Maple Pharmacy
arts and crafts, play dough play, shoveling the snow, and the most popular one of all is baking chocolate chip cookies! (The healthconscious opted for oatmeal cookies.) Industrious readers use winter as a time to organize their homes. Some are not deterred by the cold, and think of sledding and snow activities as winter fun! One reader even makes slush by filling up pans with clean snow and adding syrup. Another recommends filling up pans with snow, boiling a mixture of sugar and maple syrup, then pouring the mixture on top of the snow to result in Maple Syrup Taffy.
Some readers preferred natural moisturizers, such as olive oil, coconut oil, and vitamin E capsules- pricked and squeezed so that the oil can be rubbed into the skin. One reader felt that Vitamin D supplementation does the trick. As with everything in life, prevention is the key. Start moisturizing before your hands are chapped! For hands that are chapped, many people recommended moisturizing the hands very well and sleeping with gloves overnight. Some wrote they use cloth gloves, which are available in the pharmacy, while others recommended rubber gloves. Another tip many readers suggested was to wear gloves whenever going out. Many felt that keeping their hands dry does the trick, while others wrote that keeping internally hydrated makes all the difference. Some felt that using rubber gloves while working in the kitchen goes a long way in keeping the skin smooth. One reader used Dr.Sarno’s method, which she said helped her in healing her chapped hands, and another found that being super careful with negel vasser - even in middle of the night - was a segulah for smooth hands.

Why a Home Should Be Insured by Ann Zeilingold
Last week, we explored purchasing a home after the pipes froze. What should a homeowner do if he faces damage, be it from fire, frozen pipes, burst hoses, electrical current shorts, sewer back-ups, roof collapsing from ice, snow, trees falling on the home, vehicles driving into the home, lightning striking the home, leaks, or anything that has damaged the home? What should a homeowner do when faced with these types of calamities? This is why a mortgage company requires that the borrowers get home insurance. Even if one owns a property and doesn’t have a mortgage, it is very important to keep an up-to-date insurance policy on any property that one owns. Eric Jaslow from State Farm Insurance in Nyack, New York says, “As a premier agent from State Farm, I can write a check up to $5,000 at my discretion in the face of an emergency, and I make myself available 24 hours a day.” He tells the story of a client of his who’s coop burned down at 12 a.m. Eric was there getting the family situated in a local hotel and giving them a check so they could purchase what they needed to get through the next few days, until the insurance claim was processed. Normally when a claim is called in, the insurance company reviews the claim and sometimes will send out an insurance adjuster who will review and assess the damage, and determine ultimately how much will be paid out. Insurance companies don't always pay a claim just because it was reported or called in. An example is when it is determined that the damage was caused by negligence of their insured. A client of mine in Brooklyn had a situation which was never resolved satisfactorily. The family went up to the country for the summer and the husband was at home

but he just stayed in the first level of the three-story home. He went to work and came home, never realizing that the 3rd floor shower was never shut off properly. The steady drip went through some cracks in the tiles, dripping through the whole house. Just dripping, dripping, dripping, and dripping. When the family came home after the summer, there was a pool of water in the basement and it turns out that all three floors of the house were affected. Mold grew in the walls, and the tiles and bathroom walls collapsed upstairs. It needed a major repair. When the client called his insurance company, the claim was denied. They said the damage was caused by negligence of the homeowner. The claim was never paid, even after three years of fighting. The family could not live in the home so there was rental expenses. Eventually, they took a rehab mortgage to fix the well over $150,000 of damage and have recently moved back into their home. Eric advises homeowners and p r o -
spective homeowners to speak to their insurance agent about the specifics of the policy being purchased. Sometimes for a nominal fee, additional coverage or extended coverage can be purchased. When purchasing insurance, one should be clear on the following three points. • If you own a piece of property, talk to your insurance agent and make sure that you're insured properly. Review your policies on renewal annually in case something has changed and coverage needs to be tweaked. • Review the deductible. Know how much you would have to pay out of pocket in case of a claim. • Work with an agent. An
agent will guide you what to do if you have a claim, whether you should call in a minor claim or not and whether your insurance rates can be affected. Some insurance companies will drop clients that have a history of numerous claims making it difficult to find another insurance company to cover the property at a reasonable rate.
