CHAVERIM - FILLING A VITAL NEED

I am really enjoying your series on Chaverim. This week especially had me nodding my head. It brought back memories of the time we were stuck in gridlocked traffic on Chol Hamoed Succos with the clock moving closer and closer to Shabbos. We placed several frantic calls to family, when someone suggested we call Chaverim. Chaverim? I thought. What do they have with this? Turned out they did - and how! We were given instructions until when we were allowed to drive and told not to worry - they'll make sure we find our way home or are placed for Shabbos. Baruch Hashem, we made it to our door at the zman, but having a backup plan and the support of Chaverim saved our sanity. It was not the only time Chaverim came to the rescue of our family - once unlocking our door and at another time our mailbox to which we lost the key. What chesed! A Monsey resident

I recently started something new when making my grocery order which I feel elevates my shopping experience, that I would like to share with Monsey View readers. With grocery orders easily costing $250 a week for my family of four, I sometimes stand at the cash register wondering - am I really spending all this money just to feed four mouths and the occasional guest for just one week? And it makes me feel like quite the spender, as honestly, I do not weigh and measure before throwing another item into my cart. A couple of months ago, I started adding to my order one of the tzedaka cards at the register, which is added to your order and donated to organizations providing food for the less fortunate. It makes me feel better about spending all that money, and with the exorbitant food prices these days, what really is another five or ten dollars added to the inflated bill? It makes me feel that after all the food will be demolished or spoiled, a small percentage of the order remains mine forever. I am sharing this because I started doing it only after checking out behind a man who took several cards as part of his order and it made me think, Hey - why don’t I do it, too? A Monsey shopper

Omega-6 Fatty Acids Last week I wrote about the dangers of trans fats, and about how saturated fats are indeed healthy and wise to consume. Today I will talk about omega-6 fatty acids, and next week you’ll learn more about omega-3.

THE PROBLEM: Omega-6 lies at the core of many diseases. Although you need a very moderate amount of omega-6 fatty acids in order to promote cell growth, hormonal balance, and the nervous system, you may be consuming way more omega-6 fatty acids than your body needs. When consumed in excessive amounts, omega-6 can lead to obesity, arthritis, mental disorders, heart disease and other health issues. The problem goes back to the 1970’s, when corn oil became heavily subsidized in the United States, and the cost of many basic foods went down significantly. This worked out well for leaders in the food industry, but what about your health?

high in omega-6 fatty acids, and since manufactures like things cheap, corn oil – which is often listed as vegetable oil – is added to almost every single food item you can think of: pastries, pies, pretzels, potato chips, ice cream, popcorn, soup, nuts, and basically anything else you’ll find at the grocery store. Unless you hear the words “farm-raised” or “organic,” animals like fish, chicken, and cows are all fed corn- which means that even the protein-rich foods you eat are full of omega-6! Some of you may be panicking that there are no more healthy foods in this day and age. Others will probably complain that it’s tough to find nutritious foods that don’t have some kind of ill effect on the body. Well, I agree with this, unless you eat everything organic (which isn’t exactly perfect either, but it’s definitely 99% better than only eating non-organic foods). Almost every food item, including the so-called “healthy” options, are loaded with corn oil. Some products use cottonseed or soybean oil, which are just as bad and have high quan-

SHOULD I STOP EATING? Should you stop eating? I certainly wouldn’t! And I wouldn’t lose sleep over this either. What I suggest you do is avoid processed foods as much as possible, as well as any food items that list corn or vegetable oil as ingredients. And if your budget permits, buy organic foods whenever you possibly can! Take advantage of healthy options such as farm-raised chicken, grass-fed meats, cagefree eggs and wild salmon – that way you can calmly eat rich protein foods that aren’t loaded with omega-6. (Plus you can escape all those chemicals and hormones that are dangerous for you!) If your budget is tight, and you can’t afford to incorporate organic foods into your diet, then consider buying one less dress, or another material object you can forgo-and purchase organic proteins instead. Even if you start with just one change – say, for example, that you buy organic or cage-free eggs – this will be a great step in the right direction. You really can benefit from changing this one product to organic or cage-free.

For many, this option seems much more doable than buying everything organic all at once. Start with little steps, and you will see a big change.

OMEGA-6 OILS: Here I compiled a list of oils that contain large quantities of omega-6. It’s best to steer clear of these whenever you can. At the very least, avoid cooking or baking with them. Safflower oil 78% omega-6 Grapeseed oil 73% omega-6 Sunflower oil 68% omega-6 Hemp oil 60% omega-6 Corn oil 59% omega-6 Cottonseed oil 54% omega-6 Soybean oil 51% omega-6 Walnut oil 51% omega-6 Sesame oil 45% omega-6 It’s important to realize that all these oils contain at least 45% omega-6! They’d make good diesel fuel for your car, but there’s much better fuel out there for you! Also keep in mind that when you eat seeds or a small amount of butter from these oils, the omega-6 content will never reach such high quantities. In fact, walnuts and sun-

flower seeds are actually quite healthy, because in their original form, the oil doesn’t exist in concentrated amounts. You’ll have to eat three cups of walnuts in order to consume just a few teaspoons of walnut oil! Not too many people I know would eat three cups of walnuts in a single day, but it’s really easy to consume a few teaspoons of oil, especially when you’re using it to cook your food. Parshas Bo begins, “Vayomer Hashem el Moshe bo el Paroh... ki ani Hashem – Hashem said to Moshe, ‘Come to Paroh for I have hardened his heart and the hearts of his servants so that I may place these signs of Mine in his midst. And in order that you may relate in the ears of your son and your son’s son how I made a mockery of the Egyptians, and the miraculous signs I performed among them. You will then know that I am Hashem.’” Hashem could have brought about the redemption from Mitzrayim in any number of ways, but He chose to do so through the signs of the ten makkos (plagues). Hashem tells us why: we will then know that “I am Hashem.” The Sfas Emes writes that his zeide, the Chiddushei Harim, explained that there were ten makkos in order that the Asara Ma’amarim, (the Ten Utterances with which Hashem created the world), should be uncovered and revealed to be the Aseres HaDibros, (the Ten Commandments). Thus, we see that the conclusion of the makkos will be “I am Hashem,” which is the first of the Aseres HaDibros. Likewise, the famous Ramban at the end of this parsha says that the purpose of the makkos and yetzias Mitzrayim was to reveal that Hashem created the

world and rules the world with complete mastery. The Ten Utterances of creation are the laws of nature. Through the ten makkos, Hashem demonstrated His mastery over every aspect of the natural world, from water to weather, from diseases to insects to beasts, to life and death itself – it is all in His hands. The following is a shortened summary: 1. “I am Hashem” corresponds to “Let there be light,” as it says, “Hashem is my light…” (Tehillim 27:1) 2. “You shall have no other gods…” corresponds to “Let there be firmament between the waters, and it shall divide between water and water.” The firmament is the Jewish people, who are to divide between Hashem, the Source of Living Water, and the false gods, which are called “broken wells.” (Yirmiya 2:13) 3. “Do not take the name of Hashem in vain” corresponds to “The waters below the firmament shall be gathered into one place.” Do not cause a separation in the unity of the waters below (the Shechinah, which is Hashem’s dwelling in this world) by speaking a false oath. 4. “Remember Shabbos to keep it holy” corresponds to “The earth shall sprout vegetation.” Every weekday is provided sustenance through the blessing of Shabbos. 5. “Honor your father and mother” corresponds to “There shall be luminaries in the sky.” The sun corresponds to your father, and the moon to your mother. 6. “Do not murder” corre-

I had gone to a shiur on a rare Thursday morning out, making a monumental effort to focus, to ignore my mounting deadlines, half-scrawled Shabbos menus, and general tidying waiting back home. As the speaker extolled the virtues of a woman who is grounded, who knows her tafkid in life, and doesn’t run around looking for inspiration she could find in

So I listened patiently, nodding, agreeing that it did sound pretty silly, and didn’t reflect well on the author (moi) at all. And then, in a moment of can-

My mind began to race: Did I tackle any controversial topics recently? Unknowingly insult anyone? Were there any grammar mistakes? The truth was more prosaic. “…But I recently read one of the articles you’ve written, and you got the facts all mixed up. I was so embarrassed for you when I read that the event attracted over three hundred people, when there really were only 250 there. And you said Rebbetzin so-and-so-was the keynote speaker, but she only spoke at the end.”

dor, I decided to share the inside story. “You see, sometimes we write a first draft, and hand it in for corrections. And then--I know this is hard to believe-but sometimes the corrections somehow don’t happen, for various reasons. Either the emails don’t arrive, or they come in too late, or the printer mixes up the two versions, or perhaps I thought I sent the corrections, but really I didn’t…” I knew I was rambling, but I had to get it out of my system. As I continued, I sensed a subtle change in the atmosphere. To be honest, the excuse felt lame, even to my own ears. It felt like the classic “dog ate my homework,” excuse, or, if you didn’t have a dog, “pesky kid brother tore it up.” “So you’re saying that it’s no one’s fault?” Chani’s voice was strident. “I’m not saying that at all. It is my fault, for not being careful enough. But mistakes happen. We’re all human.” Grateful nods in my direction.

I glanced discreetly at my watch. How had this happened? Were there only two and a quarter hours until the preschool bus? Which reminds me of an amazing story. Maybe you can use this for an article.” By now, the participants at the shiur had trickled out, my allotted time for grocery shopping was slowly fizzling, and I was impatient to get on with the day. But the story seemed promising, so we continued to talk outside, hands in our pockets, bracing against the wind. “One cold morning, a couple of years ago, my husband injured his shoulder, and I went to borrow a heating pad from my parents. I walked into their home early in the morning, as my father was saying Birchas haTorah. To my amazement, I

overheard him say the first two brachos loudly, and when he got to the bracha of ‘shelo osani ishah, Who has not made me a woman,’ he whispered the bracha. “I was astounded. Could it be that my father was actually so sensitive--so concerned of my mother’s feelings, that he wouldn’t say the bracha aloud, so as not to hurt her? But something didn’t click. After all, it was a bracha instituted by the Anshei Knesses HaGedolah. And besides, it wasn’t intended to hurt women, but to praise them, for being made in the Ribono Shel Olam’s image. “These thoughts flew through my head as my father finished saying the brachos, greeted me warmly, gave me the heating pad, and wished my husband a refuah sheleimah. All that day I mulled over the story of my father’s sensitivity, and even repeated it to a friend or two. ‘One day, when I write a book about my father, this story will be in the first chapter,’ I promised myself.” I tapped my toes impatiently, wondering what she was getting at. Nu, a nice story, but I was in a rush. “Anyhow, a few years went

It’s a family minhag!” “Did your Bubby also go shopping on Thursday?” “Actually, if I remember correctly, she used to go to the market on Fridays.” “Why Fridays?” “Because her icebox in the shtetl could only keep food fresh for a day or two, and she wanted to eat the leftovers on Sunday. Which is why we have a minhag to eat leftovers on Sunday…” We parted to the sound of laughter, and a pithy vort attributed to the Rebbe of Kotzk. “Not everything that one thinks should be said; not everything that is said should be printed, and not everything that is printed should be read…” No, we’re not perfect, but we sure try our best. But when I saw Avrumy today, all those names flew out of my head. “Boy is he in terrible, terrible pain,” was all that came to mind. He followed me from behind, a bit reluctant. I didn’t need to worry about feelings, because it was so busy without Malka’la. Between attending to the little ones and cleaning up the last spills, it was time to go. I would light candles at the wedding seudah. Duvid went to the cheder, taking the boys with him. I held hands with the girls, all of them in shiny, neat, single braids. The tables in two classrooms on either side of the hall were set. White tablecloths covered a semi-circle of desks, and small challah’lach sat under napkins. Salatim that smelled their way deep inside my hungry stomach lined the tables. Fish patties, still warm, hid under a towel. I quickly lit the candles in both rooms. People came. They filled the hall with their voices and pressed my cheeks with noisy, wet kisses. The chassan and kallah arrived and were seated. The singer lead the men in song, and the Zinger’ke, on the woman’s side, sang rousing, heartwarming prayers.

He lifted his voice above the chattering so that everyone stopped and sang along. The chassan was placed on top of everyone’s shoulders and carried around. And that’s when I danced as never before. I danced because I could. I lifted my feet up and my hands clapped and I held hands with my friends, my family. The singing was loud and purposeful. Faster and faster, round and round, until my chest was beating so fast, it

I’m not a tzaddik, but dancing in a small circle around the chassan, and around my Avrumy, the soldier, who was pushing Chuna’s wheelchair while I held Chuna’s hands and the hands of all my other children, I knew we were all tzaddikim. All of us are, His entire nation. And today I got a glimpse. “This is He". He was with me all this time. The End

A TIMELESS ART By: Toby Perl There’s a group of girls huddled together down the block, very absorbed in an activity. As I get closer, I rub my eyes, wondering if I’ve traveled back in time to the shtetl. I can almost envision long braids swinging over apron-bedecked dresses. But no, this is Monsey, in 2015. Nimbly wielding crochet hooks, entwined in colorful balls of yarn, they stitch happily. Crocheting has made a comeback in recent years. It’s become so popular that many schools have incorporated crocheting lessons into their curriculum. I interviewed a few crocheting teachers to hear their view on this topic. Mrs. F., of Bobov School, has crocheted for over 50 years. She’s very enthusiastic about the benefits of crocheting. “There’s something deeply satisfying about taking yarn, a mere piece of string, and creating from that a little bootie!” Mrs. Esther Malka Wiznitzer of Bnos Yisroel Viznitz echoes these sentiments. “It’s a very rewarding feeling, that from a ball of yarn you end up with a beautiful project! The girls come into class knowing nothing about crocheting and it’s unbelievable

what they make!” Crocheting is not just about a hat, scarf, or even a cape- there’s so much to make, that the possibilities are endless! Besides clothing, there are stuffed animals, home décor, accessories and what not. Crocheting has no limits! If you have the skills and passion, you can never get bored. For Mrs. F., crocheting is a mission. “Our hands are invested with the need to do,” she tells me emphatically. “They are itching to move! Boredom and restlessness are very prevalent in today’s society. Instead of filling up extra time by texting and other mind-wasters, let’s use our hands to create. If you find yourself stuck in traffic, waiting for an appointment, or even sitting and schmoozing, there’s something you can do to fill the time.” Mrs. C. R. Wertzberger of Bais Esther Satmar agrees wholeheartedly, sharing an old truism: “It’s better to rip a seam and sew it back together, than to sit around doing nothing.” She’s been teaching crocheting for seven years now and says that crocheting has always been around. “Crocheting is a wonderful hobby that won’t go out of style.

When I started teaching, it was very hot, but it’s only getting hotter.” Trends change in styles of clothing, but hats and scarfs are basic, and it’s always nice to be able to crochet a gartel. All the teachers mutually felt that crocheting gives a tremendous boost to a person’s selfesteem. They told stories of girls who weren’t doing well scholastically, but excelled at crocheting- which gave them a confidence that spilled over in other areas and helped them overall. “There was a girl with so many issues, that we didn’t think that she’ll succeed here either,” one teacher reminisces, “and in the end, all the girls stood around her and marveled at her beautiful project! Can you imagine what that meant to her?” Mrs. Simi Green teaches in Bais Rochel, Bais Trany, and Bais Chinuch Hayoshon. “There isn’t such a thing that a girl can’t do it.” She points out that crocheting is a very relaxing activity that releases stress. The teachers maintain that crocheting is easy to learn, and brings out creativity in a wonderful way. Mrs. Wertzberger feels that it balances out the girls’ heavy workload perfectly, and is a very healthy outlet. It’s a skill worth knowing- once learned, you’ll never lose it and it’s a big plus in a woman’s older years. I spoke to Mrs. Tarkieltaub, the owner of Craft it!, a local crafts store that sells yarn and conducts classes for women and girls. “We’ve made crocheting easy for everyone,” Mrs.Tarkieltaub proudly relates. “We have a very big variety of yarn, and we offer help with choosing the right products and patterns. Many customers come in for help with their projects.” She smilingly admits to being referred to as The Crochet Lady. “I do beginner’s classes, teach-

ing the basics, and it’s amazing to see to which levels they take it!” Mrs. Tarkieltaub says. “Sometimes they return for advanced classes, but often they just build on it themselves. I’m delighted when they stop by to show me their work or send photos.” She shares with me that many women often wonder if they’re too young or too old to learn crocheting, but she dispels that notion. “We actually have

a group now with three generations – a great-grandmother, her daughter, and granddaughter are all learning to crochet together!” Mrs. F. shared a beautiful anecdote about the previous Rebbe of Skver zt”l: Living under the Communist rule there was great spiritual danger of all the ‘isms’ rampant at that time, so the Rebbe kept his daughters at home. To keep them happy

and stimulated the Rebbe sat with them for hours, telling stories and doing handiwork. Under the Rebbe’s guidance they completed a needlepoint that’s still cherished today. “It cost me thousands of blatt gemara,” the Rebbe related. The girls not only grew up frum, but they married great tzaddikim. With that in mind, won’t you join me beside the fireplace with your yarn and hook?

No last-minute menu planning, no food worries, just a slow simmering pot of wholesome goodness to satisfy your family come dayâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s end. I love to lift the lid at 5:30 pm and have the tantalizing aroma permeate the kitchen and warm the atmosphere. NO CROCKPOT? NO PROBLEM! Bring contents of any recipe to boil in a pot and allow to simmer on a blech or hot plate for super results.

RICE AND TURKEY STEW

When I served this supper one Tuesday, my ten-year-old surprised me by asking that I please continue trying out recipes for The Monsey View-and this is not from a rice loverto put it mildly. Although this recipe uses a bit more oil than usual, don’t attempt to skimp, as the white turkey will turn out too dry.

1 large onion, diced 2 cloves garlic, minced 3 oz. canola oil 2 lb. white turkey cutlets, cubed 1 ½ cups short grain brown rice (Lundberg’s) 1 red pepper, diced

4 stalks celery or ½ cup diced knob celery 8 oz. mushrooms, fresh or canned 2 ¾ c. oil 1 ¾ T. kosher salt ½ t. black pepper 1 t. paprika

Place onion and garlic with oil into crock, set on high, and allow to saute for 15 minutes. Add turkey and cook for 10 minutes. Add the rest of the ingredients, and set on a low setting until ready to serve, approximately 7-8 hours. Note: if you don’t have time to saute the onion, you can skip the first two steps and just cook everything it once.

THREE-IN-ONE DINNER

The great thing about this meal is that it’s a one-pot supper, yet plates beautifully as three separate dishes.

Prepare extra meatloafs and freeze in foil pans to fit circumference of your crockpot. You can then put this meal together in a jiffy!

1 medium onion, chopped 2 tsp. salt 4 large potatoes, sliced ½ tsp. paprika 2 T. oil ½ tsp. black pepper

2 c. sliced zucchini 1 c. sliced carrots

Reserve 2 tablespoons of the onion for the meatloaf, and the rest of it put into the bottom of the crock with oil. Mix sliced potatoes with spices and place over onion. Place the sliced zucchini and carrots over the potatoes with 1/3 cup water.

Meatloaf: 1 ¼ lb. ground chicken 1/3 c. oil 2 T. (reserved) onion

1 tsp. honey 3 eggs 1 c. bread crumbs 1 clove garlic crushed

¾ c. water ½ tsp. salt ¼ tsp. black pepper

Mix all ingredients. Place a parchment paper over the vegetables. With a sharp knife, make a few slits in the parchment paper, and place meatloaf mixture on it. Smooth out the top and sprinkle with paprika. The slits will allow the flavors to blend. Cook on low until ready to serve.

first state to hold an actual election-- a win in Iowa gives a campaign momentum. Leading numbers in the polls generate a certain level of interest, but a concrete win really piques people’s curiosity. Voters take note, as do donors and party heads. A win can generate more support and more donations. What may be more important to look at, though, is those who come in last. On the Republican side, we can expect a withdrawal or two after the Iowa elections. Candidates who can’t manage to get beyond single digit wins will be rethinking their campaigns. If they have decent poll numbers in subsequent states, they might stick it out and wait and see what happens in later elections. But for some, all their bets are on Iowa and a loss signifies the end of their campaign. In the last two elections, neither one of the republicans who won Iowa went on to become their party’s nominee. But in the last two general elections, the republican party lost the general election. So maybe the Iowans are on to something…

CREATING A CRAFT CORNER Displaying children’s crafts is something every proud mother wants to do, but too often crafts either take up refrigerator space or sit around in piles. Here are some great ideas for designated craft corners in the playroom that will make Mommy and children happy! • Create a clipboard art display gallery. Let each child decorate his or her clipboard, and then hang them up attractively in a section of your playroom. No tape or glue needed- simply let the crafts hang - the most recent one on top, held in place by the clip. • Hang up a few wall rails for great art display. (This one is from Ikea for $4.99.) The ledge will allow you to stand up your little ones’ masterpieces. • Another great Ikea product for displaying children’s art is this wire rod (at $12.99) with hanging hooks, that can serve as a great “clothesline” for craft products. They also have similar stiff rods that can be used. • Not in the mood of shopping? No problem! Improvise by hanging skirt hangers on hooks, one per child. The size is perfect for displaying standard crafts. Have each child paint or decorate their hanger. • If your budding artist is proud to display his artwork on your walls in crayon, pen, or worst of all - ink, perhaps this is an idea for you: use chalkboard paint, available in paint stores, to turn one wall -- or a section of your wall -- into a chalkboard where the kids can scribble in an erasable format.

MINDING THEIR MESS Make children responsible for packing away toys, by making it doable and fun for them. • Suspend a hammock between the walls in the corner of the playroom and toss in all dolls and stuffed toys, or balls. Kids will have a blast with cleanup! • Make it easy for them. If you use pictures on the front of the containers even your younger kids will know what toys go there. • Keep the organizational system at their level. Bins that are too tall can topple over on them. If the shelves are more your height than theirs-- have them lowered • Make your own corner library with forward facing shelves. It will encourage children to put back the books right there, and it will always be neat. Add a bean bag or two to that corner, for a reader’s nook. If they can only take out one toy at a time, the room stays much neater, and you are the Master of Toys! • When it comes to organization and selecting which toys have done their time, never throw out or prepare toys for giveaway when children are there, as they tend to suddenly grow sentimental about things they haven’t touched in months. (Of course, it is something they will miss or still use, do consult with them.) • Over-the-door shoe organizers are great for organizing craft supplies, for stuffed animals, for children’s prize collections, and for dolls’ dresses and accessories. WHO GETS TO LIVE IN RETIRED SUBWAY CARS? The New York Subway System has more than 5,000 cars. From such a huge number, there are obviously many cars each year that retire. Are you wondering what happens to them once they are proclaimed unfit to transport travelers to their destinations? For almost nine years the NYC Metropolitan Transit Authority (MTA) stripped and decontaminated more than 2,500 subway cars and dumped them into deep parts of the Atlantic Ocean. The parts that were removed, such as seats, wheels, and motor parts, were recycled or sold. Once these subway cars settled on the ocean floor, they became a protective home or artificial reef for aquatic life. The subway cars that have been lying at the bottom are already teeming with plants and fish. Acting as a replacement for natural reefs, they encourage marine life to settle and grow, and have since successfully rehabilitated aquatic life that was suffering from the growing problem of dying coral reefs in our oceans.

THE UNDERGROUND RAILROAD The Underground Railroad is not referring to subways. It is the name given to a network of secret routes and safe houses used by slaves in 19th Century America in efforts to escape slavery in the South. Before times of technology, they relied on the Northern star and moss growing on trees-which usually grow on the northern side, to show them the way North. Not too long ago, West Street in Spring Valley, where Hatzlacha Grocery is located, was called Harriet Tubman Way, named after the person who started the Underground Railroad.

• A Monorail is a railroad that has a single track; it is typically elevated. One form of an elevated monorail is the suspension railway, where the vehicle is suspended from a fixed track. It almost feels like you’re riding a cable car, but it is more steady, as it is not hanging from a cable. • Subways are underground electric railroads, although this term is also loosely used for parts of a subway system that are not underground and for underground train systems that are mechanically built like light rail. Subways are often found in busy cities. • A Light Rail is a train system used for lighter traffic. The trains are not long-sometimes even with just one cabin --and it often partly operates on streets.

LUXURY TRAINS When it comes to trains in the US, things are pretty ho-hum. But around the world, there are many different interesting and luxury trains that make traveling exciting. • In Japan, there is a toy-themed train featuring vending machines with toys, a toy store, and colorful kindergarten decor. They even have cribs built into the train. Definitely somewhere I would consider going with toddlers - after I win the lottery, that is. • Seven Stars in Kyushu, Japan is a luxurious “land cruise.” This train’s cars are filled with deluxe suites, no children are allowed, and all passengers must be dressed very formally for this: a high-class hotel on wheels! Its seven cars, which include sleeping suites, lounging cars, a grand piano and bathrooms made of porcelain can accommodate 28 passengers. • The Orient Express is one of the most popular luxury trains. A ticket will only set you back $3,140 for 2 days/ 1 night in a double cabin. • In the Canadian Rockies this two-story train allows you to soak in the majestic mountain sunlight from the panoramic-windowed domed observation car, and then go downstairs to dine.

TRAINS IN NEW YORK Tucked away in the suburbs of New York we may not feel it, but New York is actually quite big on trains. In total there are 4,796 miles of railway routes (as surveyed in the year 2000), crisscrossing New York State. That says a lot, as all of New York State is 330 miles long and 283 miles wide. In addition, NYC is home to the two busiest train stations in The U.S.: Penn Station and Grand Central Station. The latter is owned by a private owner who leases it to the MTA, and Penn is owned by Amtrak. In total, there are approximately 1,400,000 -- yes, almost one and a half million -- people collectively passing by these two stations on a given day. This comes nowhere near Japan home to Shinjuku, the world’s busiest train station, which is used by more than 3 million per day!

FUN FACTS • During rush hours in Japan, railway station attendants called “pushers” (or “oshiya” in Japanese), push passengers into the trains, so they shouldn’t waste time! • The first locomotive in America raced against a horse-drawn train and lost the race! (Not because it was slower, but because a belt broke loose, forcing it to stop.) • Time zones in the U.S. were standardized per zone thanks to the train. There was a need for consistent timing, because a system of departure, arrival, and travel times were impossible as long as every town had their own timing. • The station with the longest name is the Minami Aso Mizu No Umareru Sato Hakusui Kogen Station in Kumamoto. Now repeat that three times! Despite this long name, the station is a very small provincial transportation hub.

POP-A-LOCK Getting in or out is as easy as dialing 371-NEED

It was unseasonably hot for this time of year. Usually the week before Pesach is fresh and crisp, with a light breeze blowing through the air. But this year was different, and the temperature was mounting inside the car. As the minutes ticked by and Mr. Green* scrambled to compile his short list of forgotten Seder necessities, little Chesky* slept peacefully in his car seat. He had been so quietly content, enjoying his late morning nap, that in the stress of the pre-Pesach rush, Mr. Green had simply forgotten that his wife had asked him to bring the baby along on a last minute shopping trip. Luckily, a passerby happened to notice the helpless infant locked inside the car. Hurriedly placing a frantic call to Chaverim, he begged the dispatcher to save the life of the innocent babe. Within seconds, a long blare signaling an emergency-situation was broadcast through the radio waves, reaching the ears of 85 active members. Any Chaverim member within the vicinity dropped whatever he was doing and flew to the grocery parking lot in a mad dash to prevent tragedy. Mr. Green was shocked when he exited the store 20 minutes later and found a groggy little Chesky in the arms of a Chaverim member, surrounded by a veritable sea of volunteers. This time, disaster had been averted.

Lock-outs. They happen on a daily basis, and if you don’t know the number to Chaverim it could potentially have disastrous results ch”v, or more commonly- disrupt carefully laid plans. When I spoke with Mr. Yanky Ungar, a Chaverim Coordinator, he shared with me several different stories about how Chaverim is able to save a person the incredible stomach-churning sensa-

tion that comes with lost time and grated nerves. We speak about people locked in, people locked out, and the pressure one might feel, for instance, when they have a locked car, a cart full of groceries, and small children shivering in the bitter winter wind. The keys dangling tauntingly from the ignition, mere inches away, but inaccessible - are enough to make one’s blood pressure soar. In the words of Mr. Ungar,

“In less than a minute, you can help someone and save them time, money, and aggravation.” Whether it is a car door, outer house door, bathroom door, safe, cash register, or even toy handcuffs, (yes, there actually have been people locked into toy handcuffs!) Chaverim has members specially trained in picking and popping locks. One story that stands out in my mind is that of a Bais Yakov of Ramapo graduate call-

ing Chaverim, the mounting pressure evident in her voice. The caller was attending a classmate’s wedding, and was responsible for arranging the shtick the girls would be using to gladden the kallah. It was only moments to Show Time. The only problem was that the suitcase holding the shtick was tightly closed; the minutes quickly ticking by. With but one call to 371-NEED that suitcase was opened and the entertainment carried forth exactly

If they know the code, it’s kind of a guarantee that they belong in the place.” We then speak about the various techniques involved within opening locked doors. I am shown something that is vaguely reminiscent of a miniature blood-pressure cuff which is used to insert into the narrow gap inherent in car doors. By pumping air into this device, the door gaps further open, and then a member is able to reach inside with a long wire tool, which he uses to grab the keys, or push the lock or window-opening button. From that point on, opening the door is a breeze. At residential lock-outs the procedure is different. Certain types of locks are easily popped open with a small

The question, however, that is foremost on my mind in regards to lock-picking, is how Chaverim ensures that they are not opening a door for a potential thief. My concerns are allayed when Mr. Ungar describes the multi-step verification process that each call goes through. From simply asking if the person requesting the lock-pick is the owner, to verifying that the driver’s license matches the car’s registration --there are several Chaverim tips to guarantee that some of our most expensive possessions don’t fall into the wrong hands. Mr. Ungar tells me, “If anything seems suspicious, the unit calls a coordinator, and we verify it before we give the member permission to open the door. We do the best we can.” My husband, who has joined us for the meeting, then pipes up and tells me his own personal trick. “Before open-

If the lock is sticky or tricky however, a member won’t shy away from climbing into open windows or patio doors, even if it means scaling the house to arrive at the third floor. They’ll do whatever it takes to see you back in the comfort of your own home. Our conversation then moves to emergency situations, like the story of the child locked into the car featured above. Mr. Yossi Margareten, also a Chaverim coordinator, tells me that he once had a story where a baby was involved. The mother had left the child on the bed and stepped out of the room, which subsequently locked behind her. It was 6 am when the call came in, and he went running. The baby had been in the middle of the bed and was too young to move very fast, but by the time he had picked the lock--one of her feet was already dangling over the bed. Mr. Margareten caught the baby a mere second before she hit the floor. There have also been children in the bathtub when mothers have been locked out and the danger to life is significant. Children are not the only ones in danger of being locked in. Mr. Ungar relates that the geriatric community is also at significant danger. He once personally responded to a call from a frantic adult, the daughter of an elderly lady. Being extremely close, the daughter was accustomed to speaking to her mother on a daily basis. That day she called multiple

RETRIEVING LOST OBJECTS Chaverim Mini-Article

Have you ever lost an item and found yourself in the throes of panic over its disappearance? Chaverim stands ready to lend a hand when you need extra members to join you on the hunt to reclaim your vanished object. Here are few stories to give you an idea what Chaverim is capable of. • It was erev Shabbos when the young couple stopped in a park for lunch. After eating and bentching, they resumed traveling towards Lakewood, NJ, where they would be spending Shabbos. Upon arrival, however, the young lady realized that she was missing her diamond ring. Chaos ensued when she realized that the ring had been removed for washing in the park. Who could find it now? Surely it would be gone already! After being contacted, a Chaverim member headed out to the park--over an hour away, and miraculously found the ring, untouched, on a table! • Having arrived from Montreal on a bus, the tired man climbed into his car, leaving behind his suitcase in the Walmart parking lot where he was picked up. Chaverim was able to locate the lost suitcase by surveying video footage. They discovered that a Walmart employee had found the abandoned suitcase and assuming it was garbage, tossed it into the dumpster. Chaverim contacted the sanitation department and finally tracked down the suitcase--only after sifting through piles of garbage in the landfill. • It was beautiful fall day when a child from Passaic, NJ. lost his expensive hearing aid device in a pile of red and orange leaves. Chaverim of Passiac, NJ and Chaverim of Monsey worked together in tandem to rake all of the leaves in the vicinity into a huge pile. Then each member helped to sift through the pile of leaves--one leaf at a time. The process took hours, but, baruch Hashem, a smiling little boy was rewarded with the ability to hear once again.

When Mr. Ungar responded to the call, he opened the door and saw an elderly lady sprawled across the floor, hurt, and unable to move. She had been that way for several hours with no one the wiser. Quickly, a call was placed to Hatzalah and the woman was transported to receive the medical care that she needed. It’s those moments of panic and possible tragedy that Chaverim seeks to alleviate, with members rushing to the scene in a mad dash when a call is announced as a potentially dangerous situation. Any time one is locked out it can be oh-so-exasperating to wait for help to arrive, but in a situation of questionable danger, those seconds spent waiting can feel like an eternity. The woman on the other end of the line was panicking. “I’m locked out my house and inside is a newborn baby, and a toddler who’s jealous of the baby! I know my toddler is hurting the baby--please, send someone quickly!” The dispatcher pushed a button and the emergency blast rang out loud and clear, followed by a call to action. “Any unit available for a residential lock-out, child involved?” The radio cackled to life with the affirmative response, “I’m on the way. I’ll be there in 30 seconds.” When the Chaverim member arrived he found a frantic mother wringing her hands in terror, afraid of the condition her newborn would be in when the door would be opened. Quickly he popped the lock with the know-how of a seasoned pro and ran inside to assure the safety of the children. Sure enough, the toddler had attacked the newborn, repeatedly hitting him with a metal pan. Only centimeters from the baby’s eye was a trickle of blood. Baruch Hashem the baby wasn’t seriously injured, but disaster can happen in mere seconds when children are involved. Thankfully, Chaverim stands ready at the beck and call.

This is a fascinating activity that kids in a variety of ages can enjoy for endless hours. Professional pegboards can be found in toy stores sporting quite a hefty price tag, but you can enjoy the homemade version for practically a buck or two. For a more durable version, you can construct it out of a wooden board with some hammered nails. For a simpler and more doable option, simply use a cork board and some push-

wood or cork board, nails or pushpins, rubber bands

pins. Measure the board to create evenly spaced squares, (graph paper can be used as a good guide) and push the pins or nails into the desired spots. Younger kids will enjoy stretching the rubber bands to create abstract art, while older ones can make shapes, alphabet, numbers, and simple pictures. You can even take it to the next level and turn it into a maze for a mini car or super ball! What can you “draw” on your pegboard?

Grab a broom stick, long paper towel roll, etc. and on the count of three, aim to get as many balloons as possible into the goal on your opponent’s side.

5. DO look for a competent realtor, mortgage professional, and real estate attorney. These professionals will give you advice to protect your best interests and guide you through the house buying process.

Buying a home is stressful enough without mortgage complications. Here are 10 Do's and Don’ts while you are in the house buying and mortgage buying parsha. 1. DO pay all your bills on time. Paying even a small bill late can negatively affect your credit. I recently checked a credit report and the score was 608. This was a client that was working on fixing her credit. She missed a $15 payment to Kohls and her score dipped over 50 points. She was shocked and disappointed. So was I. 2. DO save your money in the bank. I ask clients, “How much money do you have for the purchase of your home”? They give me a figure. When I ask them “Where is the money?” A lot of times they will tell me that $5,000, $10,0000 or even $20,000 is cash. Cash cannot be sourced. Cash for a mortgage does not work. Cash deposits into your bank account are not okay. When you apply for your mortgage, all your money needs to be in the bank . Any large deposits will have to be explained and the source documented. (This is one reason why it is important to discuss your assets with a mortgage professional in advance of you purchasing a home.) 3. DO keep all of your records regarding your income. You will need to provide your complete tax returns and w-2 forms. If you have changed jobs more than a few times in the last two years, know when you started each position and when you left, and all addresses and phone numbers. 4. DO keep all of your bank statements--especially transfers between one account to another. If you close an account and move the money from that account to another, get

6. DON’T open new credit or charge up existing credit while applying for a mortgage. This can cause a mortgage commitment to be rescinded.

7. DON’T change jobs in the midst of applying for a loan without discussing it with your loan officer. If you start a new job in the middle of the application, there are some mortgage programs that require that you to wait until you have been on the job for 30 days before closing. 8. DON’T plan a vacation in the middle of your mortgage application. Not being reachable or avail-

able when you are needed to close can cost you money and your down payment. I had a client that was supposed to close before 12/31/15 and the client went on vacation because his kids were out of school. He didn’t realize that he needed to be at the closing. He had to fly home for one day to close because his contract had a time of essence for 12/31/15, and he thought that there was no difference if he closed 1/4/16.

10. DON’T be a wise guy. Some clients are know-it-alls. They know “better” because they talked to their family and friends, read my articles etc… Know that your mortgage is specific for you. You can question and inquire, but you need to trust your loan officer to navigate you through the difficult journey of the road to home ownership.

9. DON’T think that your co-signer doesn’t have to sign the closing documents. A co-signer is just that. Check with your loan officer to find out if Power of Attorney is an option.
