ANOTHER REASON TO THANK
(Re: It’s a New Day! Issue 353) Thank you for the beautiful article on the Birchos Hashachar. I once read a beautiful story about a rebbe who was dancing with all his might when reciting the bracha of “Shelo asani goy.” When his talmidim asked about his behavior, he replied: “I’m of short stature and physically weak. Had I been born a gentile, I would’ve been a nobody. Shouldn’t I dance when thanking Hashem that I was born a Yid? As a Yid, I am a somebody!” I share this for all those, who like me, are short or have short children. The same amount of letters are written in a big and small siddur, and let’s not forget that a dime has more value than a nickel! Tiny and Mighty

(Re: Ripples of Sunshine, Issue 353) The thoughts Etty Samet shared in her beautiful piece about sunrise, where she wonders where everyone is as the sun makes its spectacular entrance, truly resonated with me. I used to travel early mornings, and those were exactly my thoughts as I’d pass the sun rising above the water. (Okay, not the ocean, but sunrise is gorgeous in any form.) W E A T H E R

As the entire sky changed colors and the world was so peaceful and silent — with droplets of dew covering everything and the first birds singing their songs — I always wondered the same: How do we sleep through these magical moments every morning? I.F.
RE: IMPORTANT AWARENESS
(Inbox, Issue 353) I want to join the discussion about Segways and hoverboards. I, like Ruchie T., do not allow my kids to have these electric riding toys. Besides the safety concerns, after a full day of sitting at a desk, I want them to get the type of physical exercise a bicycle offers, as opposed to these scootertype toys that require no physical exertion. The health benefits of cycling are entirely lost with moving scooters that the riders simply stand on. Another “Mean” Mother
YOUR VOICE BEFORE YOU SIGN
There are so many insurance-covered programs available today for children who need help, and it’s amazing that there are organizations that help families receive the services they need. If you are considering taking advantage of any services for your child, please make sure to be clear with these important points before signing up: • Be 100% clear as to how much coverage your insurance provides for the services in question to make sure you’re not stuck with unexpected expenses. • Read through all the reports carefully and know what you are signing for. Make sure all the information about your child’s issues are accurate and that you agree with everything written. • When your child sees a therapist or mentor, make sure that their goals and hashkafos line up with yours. The wrong type of influence can be dangerous both b’ruchnius and b’gashmius.
If you are not comfortable with any of these three points, or are not provided with the information in a clear and detailed manner, be careful and avoid trouble by staying away. Learned the Hard Way THE MONSEY VIEW WELCOMES YOUR COMMENTS, FEEDBACK AND LETTERS.

I would have lost my tongue, and he would have certainly refused my request. I’d rather suffer poverty all my life, and be able to speak up when necessary.” * * * * * Indeed, when a person is receiving a wage or some other reward from another, it becomes difficult to reprimand the person when the need arises. For this reason, Moshe Rabbeinu refused to take anything from Klal Yisroel. He knew that if he would, he wouldn’t be able to lead them and lovingly rebuke them when necessary. He chose to stay far away from compensation at all costs and remain close to their hearts instead. And that is why he was in a position to condemn Korach and his men. Adapted from the teachings of Rav Mordechai Freundlich, zt”l.
Did You Know? In Mitzrayim, Korach had been a royal treasurer. He secretly hoped that Klal Yisroel would remain in Mitzrayim after being redeemed, and that he would inherit the royal treasury. As we know, Hashem leads man in the direction he wishes to go. Thus, Korach’s craving for money was satisfied when he discovered some of the treasures Yosef had hidden in the royal coffers. This made Korach one of the richest people ever to exist. But since Korah misused his fortune, nothing remained of it. It all disappeared into the ground along with him.

Shul Swastika Scrawler Arrested by Ramapo PD
Citing Congestion and Delays, United Cuts Back Newark Flights
Just over a week after police were called in to investigate hate symbols and writing found in a Monsey shul, a suspect has been placed under arrest by the Ramapo Police Department. As previously reported in The Monsey View, Congregation Shefa Chaim was defaced by an unknown vandal, with eight swastikas drawn on various locations in the Suzanne Drive shul. Police arrested 32-year-old Rolando DeJesus Gomez-Velazquez of Hillcrest in the incident, who Detective Lieutenant Chris Franklin described as a temporary worker with access to the building. He was charged with criminal mischief in the fourth degree as a hate crime for property damage in excess of $250, and aggravated harassment, both class E felonies. With neither offense requiring Gomez Velazquez to post bail, he was arraigned on June 25 in front of Ramapo Judge Dijnsad Desir and released from custody with a Desk Appearance Ticket for a future court date.
After months of problems at Newark Airport, United Airlines is hoping to restore its reputation by cutting as many as 50 flights a day as of July 1. The Points Guy reported that the Federal Aviation Administration agreed to a request by United to trim its Newark schedule, with a goal of improving its on-time performance. The move, which only affects domestic flights, will continue throughout the summer. United will work with affected customers whose flights are being eliminated by rebooking them on different flights. United has blamed JetBlue and Spirit for the delays that have been plaguing Newark in recent months, a charge that both discount airlines have categorized as misleading. Newark is the country’s 14th busiest airport. United operates approximately 70% of the flights originating at Newark, with the eliminated flights representing about 12% of its departures from the New Jersey airport. Both Delta and American have dropped certain routes and flights in recent months because of ongoing staff shortages, but United has insisted that its decision was prompted by overscheduling and not because of limited manpower. Also cutting flights is El Al, which is canceling all flights between Tel Aviv and Toronto, Brussels and Warsaw by the end of October. The airline said that its decision was COVIDrelated, reported the Canadian Jewish News, and an unnamed spokesperson for El Al said that the entire airline industry is currently “in turmoil.” Not everyone is taking El Al’s decision lying down. Toronto financial adviser Asaf Halperin is doing his best to get the airline to consider restoring direct flights between Toronto and Tel Aviv, and his online petition supporting the cause had garnered over 4,200 signatures as of Sunday night.
East Ramapo Moves to Contingency Plan as Budget Fails Again With its revised budget voted down last week by a 2:1 margin, the East Ramapo Central School District will be forced to operate on a contingency plan next year, a reality that limits school spending and leaves taxpayers with more money in their pockets. Voters nixed East Ramapo’s proposed 2022-2023 school spending plan twice, rejecting a 3.9% tax increase in May and giving a thumbs down to a 1.63% tax hike on June 21. The district recently switched over to a ward system to give a greater voice to public school parents, and this second budget failure didn’t sit well with public school supporters. State Senator Ken Zebrowski said that the district is being “systematically starved of necessary funding” and that budget cuts must affect public and private school students equally. He took sharp aim at transportation funding for yeshivah students, despite the fact that the state requires school districts to provide busing for private school students. “We can’t allow critical opportunities for black and brown students to be on the chopping block while the district provides an extravagant ‘Cadillac door-to-door busing system’ at some nonpublic schools,” said Zebrowski. East Ramapo Superintendent Clarence Ellis said that he has been working hard to preserve core academic programs and other items under the contingency budget. 138

FedEx To Roll Out Delivery Picture Proof for Residential Customers With porch pirates growing increasingly bolder, FedEx drivers will soon be taking pictures of those packages they leave at your door in order to prove that the delivery was made. The announcement by the shipping giant came last Wednesday and will apply to residential shipments in the United States that are released without a signature. The service will be available at no charge for FedEx Express and FedEx Ground customers, with no account or login required to view the delivery photo. The photo program will be available for FedEx Delivery
Manager users in what the company describes as “select” markets during its initial phases, with a general release throughout the United States and Canada next winter. Customers will be able to view their delivery photos using their tracking number. FedEx has said that the service will help customers verify that their packages actually arrived and see where they were placed by the carrier. Amazon has been offering customer delivery photos since 2018, though customers have the ability to opt out of the service.
Three-Way Deal Carves Up Surplus New Hempstead Acreage A 22-acre parcel of vacant land in New Hempstead owned by the Town of Ramapo is about to undergo a massive facelift, giving way to a community park, a new village hall and a yeshivah expansion site. The Journal News reported that Ramapo is selling the area known as Fairway Park to the Village of New Hempstead. The village plans to use fourteen to fifteen acres of the site as a community park, which will have a walking path and play equipment, with pedestrian entrances proposed on Fairway Oval and Keri Lane, two cul-de-sacs that abut Fairway Park. Yeshiva of Greater Monsey, which is purchasing over five acres of Fairway Park as an expansion site for its current New Hempstead Road building, has agreed to finance an access road into the proposed community park as well as covering the cost of improving the curve at Pennington Way located near the park entrance. Ramapo Supervisor Michael Specht described the deal as a winwin for all parties involved. “I think it’s a positive outcome for everybody,” said Specht. “The property is of no use to the town. We get a park in New Hempstead, one the village desperately needs.” New Hempstead Mayor Abe Sicker said that the concept of replacing 140

the village’s aging headquarters on Old Schoolhouse Road was appealing. “We do need a village hall, but development has to make sense financially,” said Sicker. “We’ll see what happens down the road. We’re not looking to raise taxes.”
The Kof-K has accused the airline of engaging in consumer fraud under New Jersey law and, in addition to requesting an unspecified amount in monetary damages, is asking the airline to stop serving the artichoke snacks and to discontinue use of its trademark.
Kashrus Agency Sues JetBlue for Unlawful Trademark Usage
Court Rejects Move To Classify Bronx Zoo Elephant as a Person
Chalk up another problem for JetBlue, but the beleaguered airline’s latest problem has nothing to do with delays, cancellations or two-hour-plus hold times on calls to the low-cost carrier. Instead, JetBlue is being sued in New Jersey federal court for describing a snack sold on its flights as being kosher certified by Kof-K Kosher Supervision without the agency’s consent. Reuters reported that an Elma Farms basil and thyme artichoke snack included in the airline’s SavorUp Mediterranean-inspired food box was listed as being kosher certified by the Kof-K. According to the Kof-K’s lawsuit, JetBlue said that the snack was certified by Kof-K kosher without its consent and the airline did not have permission to use the agency’s trademarked symbol. A photograph of the artichoke snack that appeared on Amazon showed that it bore a Peruvian kashrus symbol. JetBlue routinely lists kashrus certifications on its snack menu for the benefit of its passengers who keep kosher. Products currently offered on the airline include Orthodox Union-certified PopCorners Popcorn Chips and OK-certified 88 Acres Seed Bar Thins, and a link on the airline’s online menu displays kashrus information for its featured coffee creamers. JetBlue’s focus on serving passengers with dietary restrictions also includes highlighting items that are vegan, low-calorie and gluten-free on its menu.
An effort by an animal rights group to liberate an elephant by having it classified as a person has failed, leaving Happy the elephant at the Bronx Zoo, at least for now. National Geographic reported that the Nonhuman Rights Project has tried repeatedly to have Happy recognized as a legal person because of her high level of intelligence. The 51-year-old elephant has been living at the Bronx Zoo for over four decades, and NhRP founder and president Steven Wise has said that Happy is depressed and should be sent to an accredited sanctuary where she could spend time with other elephants. The court rejected the NhRP’s case by a five to two vote, saying that constitutionally guaranteed right of freedom can apply only to humans who are being restrained against their will. The Bronx Zoo has defended its treatment of Happy, saying that she is cared for by veterinarians and zookeepers. According to zoo officials, Happy and her next-door neighbor Patty are content with their current situation, and past attempts to house the two elephants in the same enclosure were less than successful. Zoo director James Breheny explained that they were “like sisters who don’t want to share the same room.” “Neither animal was comfortable in the company of the other, and both elephants experienced different, yet obvious, levels of stress,” said Breheny.

C H A P T E R 16 RECAP: Since Chaim Simcha can’t accompany Zach to Poland, Izzy volunteers to do so in his stead. He’s working hard to get everything ready to go when his boss informs him that he can’t take time off.

zzy stared at his boss in confusion. “What do you mean, you can’t let me go? I have the vacation days available.” “We need a week’s advance notice, minimum,” Kenny told him firmly. He made a sweeping gesture across the room. “We depend on your work, Izzy. It takes time to arrange things for an absence. You can’t just disappear at the drop of a hat!” “I’m doing a lot of the arranging myself,” Izzy said. “Right now. I’ve been working double-time to get as much done as I can. It should be fine.” He pointed at George Stenner, who was standing at the copy machine. “George can handle anything urgent while I’m gone. Or Michael. It’s not like I’m the only one around here who does research and filing.” Kenny put a fatherly hand on Izzy’s shoulder, but something in his demeanor
made Izzy wary. “Don’t talk like that,” the lawyer advised. “It makes you sound replaceable. You oughtta be flattered we want you to stay! Can’t manage without you, and all that.” “I am flattered,” Izzy said diplomatically. “But that doesn’t mean —” “You can’t just leave us hanging like this!” Izzy looked around the office, but the few people standing close enough to overhear their conversation were all suddenly deep in paperwork. Nobody would meet his eye. This, too, was strange, Izzy thought. Nothing about this conversation seemed particularly embarrassing or uncomfortable. “This isn’t how my contract reads,” he insisted. “I only need to give you three days’ notice. When I applied for this job, they told me even that wasn’t really nec-
essary. Mr. Carruthers said you were usually pretty laid-back about that stuff.” “He wasn’t authorized to say that,” Kenny said smoothly. “Truth be told, it wouldn’t generally be a big deal, but now’s not a good time to lose you. Waller just decided to sue, after all. We’ve got to pull together Mr. Gardner’s defense immediately. And we need you for that.” No, they didn’t, Izzy thought. George was perfectly capable of finding the relevant cases and tying them together, even if he was a little hamhanded about his presentation. This wasn’t like Kenny. He was usually such a laid-back guy. Why was he pushing so hard about something so relatively unimportant? Then again, Izzy was a hard worker. Maybe Kenny just hadn’t felt the need to throw his weight around before? “You know,” Kenny continued, “just the other day I was talking to Judge Gordon about you. I told him we’ve got the best researcher I’ve ever found, that we were gonna hold onto you and push you up the chain.” That was such an obvious lie, it took Izzy serious effort to keep from snorting with contempt. From everything Izzy had heard, Judge Gordon was extremely unsociable. Besides, Kenny hated him. Those two were an unlikely pair to ever be caught chatting together outside the courtroom, much less discussing the merits of a junior

you for that would be grounds for a lawsuit!” “Okay, then, what —” “However,” Kenny interrupted smoothly, “we might decide to let you go because of other things. After all, you have a history of insubordination.” “Insub— excuse me?!” “It’s all in your performance record,” Kenny continued. “We’ve been very patient, but we do document poor behavior. Every time you’re late, absent, disrespectful. Fail to follow instructions…” He paused and let that sink in. “And your file — honestly, it’s a miracle we’ve kept you this long. So trust me; you don’t want to do anything to jeopardize your position here.” There was no doubt about it. Everyone else in the room seemed to know exactly what was going on, and Izzy could feel their embarrassment behind their averted eyes. They seemed to have expected this. Was this something Kenny had pulled with all of them at one point or another? “That’s nonsense,” Izzy snapped. “I don’t know how you define insubordination, but we both know it’s not me.” He was really angry now. “And my attendance is perfect!” “Perfect?” Kenny spat. “You missed more than a week last September!” “Those were for holidays!” Izzy answered hotly. “I told you about them a week in advance!” “I don’t have any email about that,” Kenny answered with a smirk. That was true, Izzy realized with a sinking feeling. He’d popped into Kenny’s office with a calendar, and the two had worked out exactly when Izzy would be gone. But there was nothing at all on paper. That, more than anything, infuriated Izzy. Kenny had clearly been planning this for months, creating a paper trail that would make Izzy look terrible. Kenny probably didn’t even care about this trip. He was just one of those people who liked to own his em150

ployees. This was about power. Control. And that was why he’d been so friendly until now. He’d been handing Izzy a shovel to dig his own grave. Every time Izzy trusted Kenny, every little indulgence he’d ever asked for, things he wouldn’t have dreamed of asking from a nastier boss, was granted in a moment. But it was another nail in his coffin. A reckless feeling took hold of him. Whatever happened next, Izzy wasn’t going to just take this kind of thing. Once, when he’d been little, a certain boy in class had taken to bullying the other kids. Everyone was afraid of him, Izzy included. Yankel took people’s snacks, pushed them around, said mean things. He did it constantly. Just never when a rebbi was nearby. Izzy had felt so powerless, so ashamed of his inability to stop it. He could have stopped it, too. He knew that. If anyone had had the guts to stand up to that kid, just once, it would’ve changed everything. The whole class would have backed him up. But nobody ever tried. That was a long time ago, though. Izzy wasn’t a kid anymore. Kenneth Borden Jr. was much bigger, a tougher kind of bully who wielded real power over their lives. On the other hand, though, the only thing he could take from Izzy was his job. And Izzy had never wanted this job to last forever. He stood up, let himself tower over his shorter-than-average boss. He spoke slowly, carefully, but loud enough for his voice to carry through the room. “You’ve just admitted that you falsified my employee records in an effort to discredit me, in order to force me to accept subpar treatment in the workspace.” “I didn’t say anything of the —” “You also threatened to fire me if I take vacation days I’m entitled to,” Izzy continued, his voice full of barely suppressed rage. “That’s actionable, but your records will protect you. It would be a long and costly suit, and you’ll have the better lawyers.” “I deny any and all of the allegations you just made,” Kenny said, grinning broadly with triumph. “I’m still going,” Izzy told him. Kenny’s grin disappeared. “What?!” “You heard me,” Izzy spat. “Consider this my notice, in the presence of witnesses. I’ll confirm shortly via email. I’m leaving for Poland for a full week. If you want to fire me over it, go ahead. Ball’s in your court. Just remember: Your contract with me included a clause saying you can’t terminate my position while I’m out of the office. So I’m going home. I’m feeling a bit sick right now, and I’ll probably be sick right up until my vacation starts. Plus, I think I’ll just extend that vacation to the full fifteen days I have due to me. You can fire me, at the earliest, in a little over two weeks. You can pay me my two months’ severance starting then.” “Izzy,” Kenny said firmly, “you’re not being—” “Or you can keep me.” Izzy said. He gestured to all the people around him. “But I’ll be documenting every single thing that happens around here from now on, starting from this conversation. Just in the unlikely event of a wrongful termination suit later.” He glared at his boss, who now looked up at him in a fury. “I’d cut my losses if I were you.” “How dare you speak to me like that!” Kenny demanded. “Do you have any idea what I can do to you? I’ll destroy you, you mutinous little worm! You’ll never find another job in the entire state of New York!” “Did everyone hear that threat?” Izzy asked loudly. He snatched a piece of paper and started jotting notes, looking up at his boss — nay, former boss — with a grin. “How do you spell ‘mutinous’?” “I only meant that you’re being very disrespectful,” Kenny backpedaled. “I’m sure that’s all it was.” Izzy gave him one more hard look, then he shut his computer down, gathered his papers together, and marched out of the office. He was still shaking with anger when he entered his car two minutes later. TO BE CONTINUED...

CHAPTER
FIVE
Recap: In accordance with the plan Gonzaloz had expertly orchestrated, Don Sebastian disappears, and the “friar” follows as soon as the others run to search for Sebastian.
A
s the corporal and his men headed back to the monastery, they encountered a tall cavalier trotting toward them on a fine steed. The cavalier wore a brocade doublet in the resplendent colors of the royal guard and a dashing hat adorned with ostrich plumes. He sat erect in the saddle, his broad shoulders thrown back in a proud military posture. The corporal tipped his hat and said, “Good afternoon, señor. I am Corporal Diego Santiago. A thousand pardons for disturbing you, Your Excellency, but could we trouble you to answer a question or two? A prisoner and his accomplice have escaped, and we are searching for them. We won’t take more than a moment of your time.” “Very well,” said the cavalier. “What is it you wish to know?” “The escaped prisoner was wearing a stolen brown friar’s cassock. He was riding a donkey. He has been gone for over an hour.” “I cannot help you, corporal. I have not seen this fellow. How did he steal a cassock in the first place?” “It is a long story, señor.” “And embarrassing, I am sure,” said the cavalier. “I’m afraid it is, Your Excellency,” said the corporal. “Perhaps you have seen his accomplice. An old man with a stringy white beard.” “An old man, you say? Was he running about in his undergarments?” The corporal sat forward eagerly in the saddle. “Yes, that is the one! Did you see where he went?” “Well, I didn’t follow him, of course. But I saw him come

hopping down the road from up there below the monastery. He turned into the second lane around that bend. I think he ran into the woods. It seemed to me that he was quite mad.” “Indeed, he is,” said the corporal. “Thank you so much, Your Excellency. You have been ever so helpful.” The corporal and his men spurred their horses and galloped off in pursuit of the deranged old man in his undergarments. The cavalier watched them for a few moments. Then he turned west toward the abandoned cabin on the hillside. * * * * *
Jagged branches, brittle and leafless, protruded from both sides of the dead oak by the roadside. In between, the tree was withered white and riven apart almost to the ground. A single green leaf clung to the cleft of the oak as if it alone had found a small vein of life in the midst of so much death. A narrow, almost invisible trail led into the forest behind the tree. Gonzalo Sanchez dismounted and walked over to inspect the tree. If all had gone well, Sebastian should have left a sign that he had been there and gone on to the cabin. If there were no sign, Gonzalo would have to head back toward Avila with all due haste to search for the missing young prince. From the distance, Gonzalo had seen no sign in or around the tree, but as he came closer, he noticed thousands of ants swarming over a small piece of bread in the
cleft of the tree. The bread looked no more than a day old. Gonzalo smiled as he mounted his horse and turned into the trail. Sebastian had been too cautious to leave a piece of cloth. That was good. He would need all the caution he could muster if he hoped to escape with his life. The long evening shadows fell over the trail as Gonzalo slowly wound his way up the hillside. Night had fallen by the time he reached a ramshackle cabin that stood in a puddle of moonlight about twenty paces from the trail. The encroaching forest had so completely surrounded the cabin that it was almost completely obscured. The roof had collapsed on one side and the front door hung askew on its hinges. There was no indication that anyone was inside, but Gonzalo was not surprised. He was sure that Sebastian was watching the cabin from a safe vantage point. Gonzalo dismounted, tethered his horse and sat down to wait. A few minutes later, Sebastian emerged silently from the forest behind Gonzalo. “Did you have any problems, Don Sebastian?” asked Gonzalo without turning around. Sebastian chuckled. “I always knew you had eyes in the back of your head, Gonzalo. I had no problems. Everything went exactly as you planned it. I owe you my life.” Gonzalo turned around and smiled. “Not quite yet, my friend. When I get you safely to France, that is when you will owe me your life. Right now, we are in the greatest of danger.” “But you have a plan.” “Of course I have a plan. I always have a plan. But we are in the hands of the Almighty. Sometimes, we can fool ourselves into thinking that we are the masters of our own destiny, but every once in a while, we have to admit that our fate is not in our hands.” “So what do we do now?” “We rest and we eat. And then we get a good night’s sleep. We will be safe here through the night. No one will come up here in the dark. Did you by any chance look inside the cabin?” “Actually, I did. It is filthy and infested with insects and vermin.” “Is it worse,” asked Gonzalo, “than your accommodations for the past year?” “It is paradise compared to my cell.” “Will you have a problem sleeping with the insects?” “None at all, but I would still prefer to sleep out in the open tonight, even though it is getting a little chilly.” “Then that is what we will do,” said Gonzalo, “but we will build no fires. There is no sense taking unnecessary chances. Are you hungry?” “A little. I have become accustomed to living with hardly any food.” “Well, tonight we will have a feast. I have two loaves of fresh bread, baked in Avila this morning, and I have a half dozen oranges. There’s a stream nearby. If I remember correctly, the water is as delicious and bracing as the best “I ALWAYS KNEW red wine from Rioja.” The two men unsaddled their YOU HAD EYES IN horses and fed and watered them. And I can sleep through this night without fear that I will be dragged out of my bed and shipped off to Madrid. Who knows what tomorrow will bring, but right now, I consider myself fortunate and free. Free as the wind.” “You are fortunate, Don Sebastian. And tomorrow will bring you even more good fortune. Have faith.” “Oh, I do. I have faith. But people who have faith can also perish. My father told me that true faith is to accept the will of the Almighty, even if what He wants is not exactly the same as what we want.” “Well, if He took you this far, I think He may want to take you all the way to safety. I really believe that you will get through this safely.” “I would like to believe it, too, Gonzalo. I wish I had your resourcefulness and confidence.” “You have my resourcefulness and confidence, Don Sebastian. They are at your service.” “I know, Gonzalo. I can never repay you.” “You can repay me by letting me go to sleep now. The sun rises early these days. Let’s get as much rest as we can.” Gonzalo rolled over onto his side and closed his eyes. “Can we talk for a few more minutes, Gonzalo? I haven’t had a conversation with another human being for over a year. I was hungrier for human contact than for bread and oranges.” Gonzalo sat up and looked at Sebastian. “Of course,” he said. “We can talk as much as you like. I had plenty of sleep last night. Enough to last me for a week.” Sebastian smiled. “I won’t keep you too long. You know, with all of your planning and execution, you really risked your life for me today. So many things could have gone wrong, and then we would both have been cooked. You more than me. Why did you do it?” “That is a strange question for a Spanish gentleman to ask. I am forty-four years old, and I have been a loyal cavalier to your father ever since I was seventeen years old. My father before me was a loyal cavalier to your grandfather. My life and honor are pledged to your family. Don Pedro was my lord, my liege, and I would gladly lay down my life 160

to protect any member of his family. And I would be proud to do it. To do anything else would be dishonorable, and it is better to be dead than to live without honor.” “I understand that, Gonzalo. Believe me, I understand the code of honor. I grew up with it, and I feel it in my bones. My father died because of it. We could have fled Spain years ago. We could have been safe, secure and free today in Amsterdam or Constantinople or some other place that welcomes our people. Instead, my father is dead, and my family is uprooted. And why? Because my father’s sense of honor and loyalty to the royal family and to the motherland would not let him abandon his duties. So he paid for his loyalty with his life. But there is a difference between your readiness to die for my father and his readiness to accept death for Spain. My father honored and cherished you in equal measure. So if you had died for him, you would have felt good about it. As good as anyone can feel about dying. But my father suffered the bitterness of knowing that those to whom he was loyal were the very ones that sent him to his death.” “Yes, that is true. I didn’t tell you yet about the last moments of his life, and now is not really the time for it. But they were glorious moments. He gave up his life for the honor of the Almighty and for his religious convictions, and that is certainly a death with honor. The great tragedy of his death is that he was undone by his own loyalty. If only he had been a little less loyal to his enemies, he could have glorified the honor of the Almighty by living for it rather than dying for it.” To be continued…

RILLING With a Totally Talented Teen BY: MENACHEM GOODMAN
H
ey, everyone! My name is Menachem, and I’m also known as the Totally Talented Teen. I’m a teenage recipe developer, food stylist and food photographer. I create recipes, as well as articles about food and kitchen or cooking tips. I love to share recipes and to spread love through food. To me, summer food means grilling. It’s food that brings people together, and there is no better food than anything grilled! So clip this article, and save it for the next time you want to buy a grill — or just need to know the right temperature to grill your chicken. Happy grilling!
HOW TO CHOOSE A GRILL
Here’s what you need to know before investing in a new grill.
Gas Grills When going with a gas grill, the top-rated models are the Weber Genesis II SX335 Gas Grill and the Weber Spirit II-310 Gas Grill. These grills vary between the prices of $550 and $1,300, which is a real investment. Weber grills are made to last, and according to the research I did, they seem to have amazing reviews. But if you don’t want to spend that kind of money, go with something like the Nexgrill 5-Burner Propane Gas Grill in Stainless Steel with Side Burner from Home Depot. It costs around $280, and I think it’s a great deal. You can also go with any other gas grills in the cheaper ranges — just don’t rely on them to last from year to year.

HOW TO CHOOSE A GRILL
Charcoal Grills Some people prefer a charcoal grill because it has higher smoke points and gives the food a more authentic flavor. I’ve never used one, but I know people love them. When it comes to charcoal, Royal Oak Lump Charcoal, Rockwood Lump Charcoal and Jealous Devil Lump Charcoal are all supposed to be amazing options. The price generally ranges between $30 and $40 a bag, or even less. For the grill itself, I’d go with a Weber, as they have the best reviews. You can expect such a grill to cost between $100 and $300. For a really cheap option, you can even buy those disposable pan grills for onetime use; they really work and are perfect for a barbecue in a park.
Electric Grills The best rated indoor electric grill is the Breville BGR820XL Smart Grill. At $300, it’s pretty costly. For me, I’ll stick with a George Foreman indoor grill. For an electric outdoor grill, check out the George Foreman 15-Serving Indoor/Outdoor Electric Grill. It costs around $100 and is pretty good. In my opinion, after all is said and done, I think you should stick to a grill that uses either gas or charcoal.

HOW TO STORE A GRILL For everyday grill use, try to keep your grill on a flat, clean outdoor space. Make sure to keep it away from the structure of your house, as well as far from plants. Also make sure it’s not stored in direct sunlight. If you store your grill indoors, make sure to remove the propane tank before you bring it in. I recommend using a grill cover to keep the outside clean and to prevent it from getting ruined. When storing it for the winter, first make sure to clean the grill well. Then place it in a cool, dry place — a garage or a shed is a good option. (Again, here’s a reminder to remove the propane tank and leave that outside.)
DO I NEED TO SPRAY MY GRILL? The simple answer is no; you don’t have to spray your grill with cooking spray every time you use it. However, the first time you use the grill for the season, oil the grates with spray before you turn on the heat. Then ignite the flame and allow the oil to burn off for 15 minutes before using. Remember: If you are going to spray the grill before using, make sure to do so when the flame is off!

SAFETY TIPS We all love to grill, and safety comes first. Here are a few tips:
1.
Never turn on the gas while the grill is closed. If you do, the grill will start filling with propane — and when you turn on the grill, it can go up in flames.
2.
Never leave a grill unattended. When the grill is on, make sure to be there and stay at the top of your game. You don’t want a kid to get near the grill and get a burn, chas v’shalom.
3.
Never overload your grill. This can lead to a grease fire or a massive flare-up. Be patient, and give the food time to cook.
COOKING TEMPERATURES Grilled Chicken When grilling chicken, make sure to marinate it for at least 2 hours before cooking. The longer it marinates, the more flavorful it will be. When grilling chicken on the bone, grill it for 30 to 40 minutes over indirect medium heat. When it comes to chicken cutlets, grill them for 8 to 10 minutes over direct high heat, flipping halfway through. The correct temperature for juicy chicken is 165° F.
Grilled Meat The best, most tender meats for grilling are skirt steak, flank steak, rib steaks and flat iron steak. You can use any other meats you like, but these few are popular for barbecues. Like chicken, these meats are also best when they are marinated for longer. When marinated, grill on direct high heat for 2 to 3 minutes per side. Some cuts of meat may take a bit longer, depending on their thickness.
Burgers/Chopped Meat The correct temperature for grilling chopped meat is medium-high heat. Sear for 2 to 3 minutes, or until you see browning and grill marks. Gently flip the burgers, and grill for an additional 2 to 3 minutes for rare, 4 to 5 minutes for mediumrare, or 6 to 7 minutes for medium–well done.
4.
Always make sure to turn off the grill when you’re done — and I don’t only mean the flame; make sure to turn the gas tank off as well. When using a charcoal grill, always have water nearby to douse the coals, even when it looks like the fire’s out.
5.
Always remember to keep your grill
clean.

WHERE ARE THE HOTTEST SPOTS ON THE GRILL? The hottest places on the grill are over direct heat. Each grill has different hot spots. You can learn where they are on your grill by cooking various foods and noting which spot cooks fastest. Also, keep in mind that closing the grill chokes the fire, because it cuts off the oxygen necessary to keep the flame burning. To keep the grill really hot, keep it open.

aybe you’re about prepping a midnight snack. Maybe you’ve turned in early and are up again, comforting a teary little person. Maybe you’re still washing dishes or marking tests when you hear that —
Scratching. Thumping. Running footfalls above your head, and your blood turns to ice as your life splits neatly into before and after because there is a raccoon. IN YOUR ATTIC. You’re unaware of time. You reach out and call husband, father, cop next door, or maybe the feisty Shabbos guest one condo over who moonlights as a wildlife terrifier. And at a more civilized hour, from the safety of your mother’s guestroom or maybe your friend’s comfy couch or your neighbor’s porch steps, you call an exterminator and he comes pronto, because something in your voice tells him this is an emergency. And he comes with a large, glorious cage, a CAGE for that horrid, horrid creature that invaded your home — your life! — and left such trauma in its wake, and swiftly, that ring-tailed animal is inside and being carted away. “Five miles out, I’ll drive her!” The friendly pest-remover smiles and waves. And you sag against the wall and just breathe. Until night comes and you are once again snacking or waking or washing or marking, and your blood freezes again because you hear crying. Not from your twin babies or toddler or kitah-alef yingel. From above your head. Mommy raccoon has left six babies behind.

Raccoon Rogue “And that’s when they call me,” says Ms. Celie Wiltse, founder of Hudson Valley Animal Rescue and Sanctuary. “The mom has been driven five miles out, never having taught her young how to live in the wild. And I’m left with all of her babies to bottle-feed — each one individually — for two months.” Ms. Wiltse is a licensed New York State wildlife rehabilitator, and she founded Hudson Valley Animal Rescue and Sanctuary (HVARS) to help those who can’t afford animal care. In her Poughkeepsie home, in her barns and on her couch you’ll find owls, skunks, raccoons and even coyote pups. (“Crazy story, that. Some
college kids brought them over when they were tiny and found lying about, and I thought they were dog pups! And, being raised in a home, they’re acting more dog than coyote, too!”) Very early in my conversation with this impassioned advocate for wildlife, I ask what her (those allergic to puns, cover your ears) pet peeve is. “Which part of our cluelessness drives you crazy? What would you like us laymen to know?” The raccoon conundrum comes thick and fast. “People don’t understand them,” Ms. Wiltse says in her friendly way, without a trace of judgment. “Raccoons don’t want to live near you, but they do have their babies in March and are looking for a safe, warm place to live. If there is a way to enter your garage, shed or attic — they will.” And it gets better. Raccoons don’t hold a monopoly on home break-ins; squirrels do the same if the way in is easy. “They don’t necessarily want to be there,” Ms. Wiltse explains. “It was just easy for them to get in.” When spooked homeowners call exterminators, some of them hustle the raccoon moms miles away to

Care-Tips Cache Animals are scary, okay? But knowing a bit more about them will help, knowledge being power and all. In the event of a lost or injured animal, would you dare try any of those tips for care? Before all, remember to be humane. Remember singing, “Tzaar baalei chaim, tzaar baalei chaim,” on those long rides home from preschool, noses squished against the bus window? Here’s the chance to practice what you preached. For starters, observe the animal so you know what to do next. • See a baby bird on the ground with no feathers? That’s a fledgling, and mommy bird will come around to feed it. If you haven’t seen a mother bird flying around the area in a while and have good reason to think the bird’s been abandoned, you can feed it moistened cat food with tweezers. • See a baby skunk alone? You can leave it a bowl with a mixture of yogurt and water. • See an injured baby animal that really needs help? Put a perforated box or basket over it, and call for help; your local vet or wildlife rehabber will love you for it. And, never make an animal feel threatened. They don’t want to bite you, but if they feel cornered, they just might. And your best bet? Call the vet. They’ll provide all the info and helpful tips and resources you need to get that animal away and safe. Now here’s where your heart rate picks up: What to do in the case of large animals — and strays? Keep read-

ing, just keep reading. Giving in to your fear when you meet an animal only makes things worse. • See a large stray or injured animal? You know this one; it’s kneejerk: Call the cops. You can also call a wildlife rehabilitator. The good news is that coyotes and even bears would rather not make friends with you. If you don’t act confrontational, chances are they’ll run from you — so don’t make any sudden moves. “Kind of go around them, not toward them,” in Ms. Wiltse’s words. • This deserves its own bullet point because it’s the hardest thing ever: Don’t run from a stray dog. Ever. Your fleeing will encourage the canine to attack. Most strays are hungry and afraid and will react to any perceived threat from you by attacking, so instead, in the event of meeting a stray: Divert attention from yourself by throwing some treats for the dog away from yourself. If that’s not possible and
the dog comes near, stand still. Hold your arms in front of you, clasp your hands together and never look that dog in the eye — it’ll feel threatened if you do. Lower your eyes and watch the dog with your peripheral vision. Let the stray sniff you if it wants, but don’t stick your hand out — again, the dog will see that as a threat. And once the dog leaves, don’t turn away from it. Back away slowly so you can keep an eye on it until it’s gone. In the event of the dog actually attacking or knocking you down, curl into a ball to protect your vital organs: head and face in your arms, knees pulled up to your chest. And when that ferocious thing is gone? Call the police or animal wardens to make sure the dog is cared for and not a threat to others.

some rural place. And when the raccoon babies are discovered afterward, wildlife rehabilitators are left to pick up the pieces, stretching their already limited time and resources to bottle-feed animal babies that would’ve done much better with mom around. “There are even exterminators who just drown the animals,” she says, followed by a shudder I can almost hear. “If you have an animal in the house, there are humane ways of getting rid of it. Noise can make an animal move its babies, and certain scents can put them off as well. Call a pro who knows how to get the whole family out.” Besides ridding your home of the whole lot of furry imps in one fell swoop, the situation is considerably better for Ms. Wiltse, too, if she gets the family intact. “I put them in one of my barns and feed the mom, and after a week of that, I just open the door. The mother will then go find a new nest for her babies.” Ms. Wiltse continues dispensing nuggets of things
to know: “Raccoons are not country animals. Rather, they tend to be based in cities and towns where there’s a food supply. That’s why we’re wary of dragging them up there; they’d be lost in the rural wilds. More importantly,” she continues, “never walk up to raccoons. They’re not predatory animals, but if they feel cornered, they will attack in self-defense.”
A Way With the Wild While we are, thankfully, experts at raising clans of humans, a bit of animal know-how comes in handy, too. Here are some “do’s and don’ts” that will allow us to treat Hashem’s small, furry creatures right. For starters, Ms. Wiltse cautions not to “kidnap” animals. “People mean well,” she acknowledges. “They see a fawn or a baby bunny and they
Is That Thing Rabid? What is rabies? It’s a viral disease transmitted through the bite of an animal infected with it. Given over to humans, if left untreated it can cause brain damage or death. Good news first: Most dogs in the United States are vaccinated against rabies, so if you thought that rabies and dogs are synonymous with each other, not so in this country. The majority of rabies cases are found in animals like bats, raccoons, skunks and foxes. How do we know if an animal is rabid? We don’t. You’d need lab testing for that. But certain animal behaviors can be indicative of rabies. While as a community we are majorly unproficient in normal animal behaviors to begin with, let’s humor ourselves with this checklist: If an animal has rabies, it will: •

•
Have difficulty swallowing
•
Drool excessively
• Seem overly aggressive (well, yeah! In my eyes, a bee is overly aggressive) •
Bite imaginary objects (sometimes called “fly biting”)
•
Appear tamer than you’d expect
• Have trouble moving or appear to be paralyzed (or, in the case of bats, be found on the floor) Well, all this comes with a neat solution that can sum up lots in wild animal knowledge: Stay away and don’t touch! And tell that growing gaggle of neighborhood boys the same thing, and may we all stay safe. Of course, if you’ve been in contact with any wildlife — particularly if you’ve been scratched or bitten — see a doctor to assess your risk for rabies.

say, ‘But it was alone; I didn’t see a parent!’ No, you didn’t — and you won’t. Bunnies and deer and such leave their young and come feed them twice a day. The babies know to stay where their mothers told them to, and the mothers keep themselves scarce.” On the other hand, sometimes there are animal orphans that do need help. The parents may have been killed on the roadside, and their babies are left helpless. So what should our baby animal handbook read like? “Baby animals won’t hurt you; they’re just trying to survive. If you see a baby animal you think has been abandoned or injured, don’t move it and don’t touch it. Put something over it that will allow for breathing, like a laundry basket or a box with holes punched in it — and call us wildlife rehabilitators. You can also call your local vets; they’ll have listings of wildlife rehabilitators who can care for the animal.” On that note, Ms. Wiltse says that a bit of help from the general populace would be so appreciated. “Our work is voluntary, and we’re really busy. If you spotted an animal 20 minutes ago, I can’t really come and search for it. But if you keep it in one place, I’ll be glad to take over.” And she reads me the rescue number right then and there: 845-392-4849. Whew! Stranded bunnies and whatnot — and your own erratic heartbeat — can all calm down. Help is on the way!

Snake! BY: CHANA GLUCK
It was the best of times. Period. Because we had the best pool ever: sturdy plastic with a little slide in the pool itself. The same pool that my sisters and I would years later stare at and be like, “Huh? We all fit in this thing?” Our mother poured her love into leaning the thing off, as a happy, sopping-wet kid stuffing her face with against the laundry pole outside and Soft-Scrubbing it Shabbos cereal met up with the dark nefariousness of before filling it with sun-dappled water from the hose. this world. My legs were gone, replaced by the wind. Must get in, I still associate Soft Scrub with good times. And then all three of us would hasten into our must get upstairs, so fast, so fast to Mommy — “A SNAKE!” swimwear and dip our toes and yell, “Freezing!” and “What? What did you see? How big was it? Was it then jump in anyway and play “On Time,” taking turns going up and down the slide fast, fast, fast, or this big?” Mommy’s hands spread apart four inches. “NO! Much bigger!” you’re out. But pools make you hungry. And Tatty must have done the shopping that week because there was this really good cereal, I BALK AND WANT TO HIDE, BUT round and large and orange and sugI MUST SEE AND BELIEVE AND ary. I couldn’t get enough of it. I crammed a handful in my mouth and ran to the VALIDATE AND BANISH THE pool for another dip. Then back in again CREATURE AND THE BOY’S FEARS. through the open garage, bare feet slapping wet prints on the concrete floor. Then back to the pool. And then, still hungry, back in “This big?” Six inches. through the dark garage that let in only a bit of sunlight ’cause the area right outside was shady… “NO! It was a real snake! Huge!” And there it was in all its slithering glory: a real, I never went back to the pool that day. honest-to-goodness snake. “She must’ve seen a garter snake,” I heard Mommy If I could insert morbid stage music here, I would, saying later. when I was ten, and whenever I needed anything from there, I would fetch it with a vise of fear around my heart because I was sure that ferocious snake was just waiting in the shadows. * * * * *
In a dizzying spin, I am a mother myself. My seven-yearold boychik stands before me, back from the backyard on a sultry pre-spring day. Shoeless. “Zeeskeit, I don’t like you walking around without shoes,” I say. “Get your shoes, please.” But his freckles are standing on end and his face screams terror even before he screams, “A SNAKE!” You think mothers aren’t scared? Sure they’re scared. We descend the porch steps, and inside I balk and want to hide, but I must see and believe and validate and banish the creature and the boy’s fears. We inch along the lawn. “Here?” “No, I think I saw it there. There. There!” Son is standing a safe meter away, and I must face the unknown myself, and — There. It. Is. The terror of my childhood, head an imperious few inches off the ground, flicking tongue and all. It is the hardest thing not to run. I walk back into the house, and say, “No, tzaddik, you don’t have to get your shoes now; wear your Crocs. Tatty will get your shoes for you later. Kids, come inside, I don’t know if this thing bites.” Finally, they’re eating lunch, and I do my research and find out that yes, garter snakes may bite, but their poison is weak and not harmful to humans. Breathe. And the music in my mind turns contemplative in a happy kind of way, as a years-old phobia is laid to rest.

Summer is here, and butcher shops are seeing the annual uptick in the demand for steak. Because meat makes an exciting grilling experience! Steak or Roast?
A roast is a large cut of meat intended to be cooked whole. A roast is best baked in the dry heat of an oven.
A steak is a thick slice of meat cut low across the muscles so it remains tender while being cooked for individual portions. This cut is perfect for the grill, as it can be prepared quickly at high heat.
How do you like your steak?
RARE
MEDIUM-RARE
MEDIUM
WELL-DONE
With a bright red center and only browned on the outside, rare meat is soft and springy.
Pink with a hint of red in the middle and a nice brown crust, medium-rare is the most popular choice for steak.
Pink and firm all the way through, medium steaks are drier and less tender.
With most of the fat evaporated in the slower cooking process, a welldone piece of steak is grayish-brown, dry and tough.

This is ideal for leaner steaks, but some people stay away, fearing that the meat is undercooked.

Which Meats To Grill? Steak that is well-marbled and tender can be tossed onto the grill as is, while tougher meats taste better with some marinade. Extra-tough meats are not cut out for the barbecue. For example: • Ribeye – Simply season with salt and pepper. • Flanken – This is wonderful when grilled with marinade. • Brisket – Keep away from the grill.
Ribeye steak is named top choice for grilling.
• You don’t need to overcook your steak to get rid of what looks like blood oozing from it. The red liquid is actually myoglobin, which is a protein with red pigment. • The best way to test steak for doneness is by thermometer. The internal temperature can tell you how done the steak is. • Thaw frozen steaks in the refrigerator overnight. For quicker defrosting, package the steak in a sealed bag, and submerge it in water.
1.5 inches is the ideal meat thickness for home-style barbecues.
Meat Kashrus in NYC THE FIRST KOSHER BUTCHER Jewish colonist Asher Levy, originally from Lithuania and Amsterdam, is credited with opening the first kosher deli in NYC. In fact, the city was still called New Amsterdam on opening day, which was November 15, 1660.
FROM PERSONAL SHOCHET TO PUBLIC BUTCHER When the first chief rabbi of NYC, Rav Yaakov Yosef, took leadership in 1888, his first undertaking was to regulate the kosher meat industry, which was in a state of serious neglect. He implemented new standards and instituted the “plumbah,” a seal that confirmed that the meat had been slaughtered under his supervision. Many butchers and shochtim were resentful of his efforts, and especially so of the one-cent charge per chicken for supervision purposes. Sadly, the chief rabbi and his plans were personally attacked, and the kosher meat industry remained in a sorry state.
THE KOSHER MEAT BOYCOTT New York City, 1902. When NYC butchers raised the price of kosher meat from 12 cents to 18 cents per pound, many Jewish families could no longer afford meat. In response, radical immigrant women protested with an intense boycott of the kosher butchers. Their efforts paid off: Meat came down in price to 14 cents a pound.
POST-WAR RISE It was only after World War II, with the influx of upright Yidden and Torah leaders such as the Tzehlemer Rav, that the kosher meat industry in New York began its ultimate turnaround.
