(Serving With Dishonor, Issue 357) I enjoyed reading the interview with the person who was penalized with community service. It was a light and entertaining read, and also brought across a truly important message. Every person who drives should read this article and remember that speeding is not a simple manner. And, of course, even of greater concern than possible punishment is the safety factor. Speeding costs lives. Malky N.

(Re: Boggle) Thank you so much for your informative and intriguing magazine. We really enjoy it! As of late, our family has been having a great time with your Boggle game. We love the setup — that each family plays on their own and has a chance to compete no matter how proficient they are at the game. We do have a problem with the current deadline, though. The only time we are all available for the competition is Sunday evening after the kids are in bed. Since your deadline is at 9:00 p.m., it leaves us with W E A T H E R

YOUR VOICE KEDUSHA OF THE KLAL
Over the last few weeks, in the aftermath of the great kiddush Hashem of Nikadesh, there has been a great wave of chizuk and awakening across the entire spectrum of frum society. And despite all the difficulties, both personal and financial, many closed their Instagram accounts. Business owners with thousands of followers, women who are in fields of work that supposedly are impossible to succeed in without social media, took the plunge and left social media. Why did they make this choice? They undertook this decision for the future of Klal Yisroel, for the future of their homes, and for their own future. They did it in order to be free from all kinds of unwanted content (which unfortunately cannot be filtered properly), and most of all, to avoid being immersed in a life and culture antithetical to Yiddishkeit just for the sake of making a living. They internalized the realization that parnassah is in the hands of the Ribono Shel Olam, the One who provides for all of humanity. As we can all understand, giving up tens of thousands of followers and lots of customers cannot come easily. But thousands took the courage to do what is right and made a tremendous kiddush Hashem. However, when a woman like that sees heimish companies who continue to advertise that they maintain a presence on Instagram, it brings a tidal wave of doubt into her heart. Additionally, such ads normalize this as a way of doing business, and the result is that the words of the gedolim and those who warned of the terrible price it costs begin to fade in the tzibbur’s minds until the words no longer have an impact, chas v’shalom. It is not for me to tell anyone how to run their business. Every person makes their own decisions on how to succeed in parnassah, in consultation with their rav. However, keep in mind that with advertising your social media involvement, you have a responsibility for the klal as well. The kedusha of so many brave Yidden who are just striving to do the right thing can be impacted by you. May Hashem give us all the encouragement and strength to do what is right, and may we be privileged to see true Yiddishe nachas until the Geulah Shleimah. PARSHAS MATOS-MASEI With All Our Hearts
When the shevatim of Reuven and Gad asked to remain on the east side of the Yardein rather than enter Eretz Yisroel, Moshe was disappointed that they did not want to join the rest of the nation. The shevatim offered to go to the frontlines of the war and help conquer Eretz Yisroel, and not return to their cities until all of Klal Yisroel was settled. Moshe agreed to their request, on condition that they stick to this agreement. Later, Moshe Rabbeinu repeated this condition back to them, stating: “Build yourselves cities for your children and enclosures for your sheep, and what has issued from your mouths, you shall do” (Bamidbar 32:24). Why did Moshe need to reiterate this stipulation? They had just finished discussing the deal, and Reuven and Gad were agreeable. Why the repetition? REB SHMUEL OF KAMINKA, ZT”L, a talmid of the Apta Rav, was well-known for his boundless acts of tzedakah and chesed. He used to distribute large sums of money to the poor and offered loans to those in need. When Reb Shmuel aged and it grew harder for him to move about, his talmidim and children took over these “responsibilities,” acting as his messengers. One day, a widow entered Reb Shmuel’s room, in tears. “Rebbe! My cow just died. Now I have no way to provide for my young children!” Reb Shmuel tried to pacify the devastated woman and promised to help her out. Immediately after she left, he summoned his gabbei tzedakah and shared the tale. “We need to raise the funds to purchase a dairy cow for this woman. It should be no less healthy than her previous cow.” The gabbaim didn’t like this idea. They were aware that this woman was not as helpless as she made herself to be. “The widow actually has a large sum of money put away that

could support her family for a long time. And besides, the cow was not her only source of income!” they said. Reb Shmuel did not argue. He dismissed them from the task. After they left, however, Reb Shmuel turned to one of his children and asked that he accompany him to the cattle market. The sight of the tzaddik in the market raised eyebrows. People rushed to assist him, and in no time, Reb Shmuel was offered a robust dairy cow. He took care of payment on the spot, and then he asked for the cow to be led to the home of this widow. When the gabbaim heard about this, they rushed to Reb Shmuel’s home. They wanted to understand what had happened. “If the Rebbe agreed with our claims, why did the Rebbe then decide obtain a cow for the widow? And if the Rebbe did not agree with our claims, then why did the Rebbe trouble himself to go down to the market himself?! We would have been happy to take care of getting a cow for this
The sight of the tzaddik in the market raised eyebrows. woman if the Rebbe would have instructed us to do so — despite our judgment.” Reb Shmuel explained: “I could have asked you to purchase the cow. But when I saw that you weren’t eager to perform this mitzvah because you had reasons against it, I knew that I couldn’t rely on you to carry it out wholeheartedly. I was left without a choice but to go to the market and take care of this chesed myself.” Clearly, our actions are influenced by the motives behind them. If a person is not convinced enough of the importance of a particular deed, or if his motivation is not valued enough in his eyes, it will come through in his actions. A person’s inner enthusiasm is reflected in his deeds. If a person has a strong feeling toward a mitzvah, it will be performed passionately and with devotion. If not, the mitzvah will remain half-hearted and lacking. * * * * * The Midrash tells that Moshe Rabbeinu originally had a grievance against the shevatim of Gad and Reuven because they placed their cattle before their children. They valued their wealth above their families. When he repeated to them the condition that they had stipulated, Moshe corrected them, telling them to build cities for their children first, and only then to arrange for their sheep. Moshe Rabbeinu feared that since the original intent of remaining on the east of the Yardein was because of shevatim’s wealth, they may have less of a push to keep their promise once they heard Moshe switch the order of their responsibilities and completely reword it. But Moshe wanted them to fulfill their end of the deal with the same enthusiasm. That is why he reiterated the condition, reminding them that they were still obligated to help Klal Yisroel at war as they would have initially done. Adapted from the teachings of Rav Mordechai Freundlich, zt”l.
Did You Know? During the time of the second Beis Hamikdash, the Jewish settlement on the eastern side of the Jordan River was part of the kingdom of the Chashmonaim. In 1921, when Britain received the mandate, they established the western side of the Jordan — Eretz Yisroel — as Palestine, and the eastern side as Transjordan. They ruled over both, yet most official documents referring to them as two separate mandates.

Monsey in the Spotlight Again as Polio Resurfaces for First Time in Years Nine years after the last case of polio was reported in the United States, the much-feared disease has resurfaced again, with the Rockland County Department of Health reporting a confirmed case in a twenty-year-old area resident. The stunning announcement was made on July 21 with County Executive Ed Day and County Health Commissioner Dr. Patricia Schnabel Ruppert urging unvaccinated Rocklanders to get vaccinated immediately. With polio existing for most only in the history books, health officials are concerned that people may not appreciate that it is an incurable virus that can cause neurological symptoms, paralysis and even death, reported The New York Times. “The last real polio case I saw in a person is probably pictures of FDR,” said Byron Backenson of the New York State Health Department’s Bureau of Communicable Disease Control. He was referring to President Franklin Delano Roosevelt, whose bout with polio left him confined to a wheelchair for life. “I think for a lot of people, they don’t necessarily understand the gravity of what polio actually is.” The oral polio vaccine, which contains a live but weakened polio virus, was first introduced in the United States in 1955, and the disease was declared eliminated domestically by 1979. The United States switched to an inactivated polio vaccine in 2000, and sporadic cases of polio have popped up over the years in unvaccinated travelers who caught the virus in countries where the oral vaccine remains in use. Health officials suspect that this latest case may have originated in a place us-

ing the oral vaccine, and The Washington Post reported that the infected individual had flown to both Poland and Hungary this year and was unvaccinated. Rockland County is in the midst of setting up multiple polio vaccine clinics, and Refuah Health has shots available for walkins at its Spring Valley location from 8 a.m. to midnight, Sunday through Thursday. Refuah is working closely with county and state officials to monitor this latest health scare, reported The Journal News. “We’re preparing our providers and staff to ensure that they are able to recognize potential cases of polio and can effectively inform and educate patients and the community about the safety and availability of vaccines,” said Refuah’s chief medical officer, Dr. Corinna Manini. County Legislator Aron Wieder is one of many who called on unvaccinated Rockland residents of all ages to get a polio shot as quickly as possible, with the American Academy of Pediatrics recommending that children get a four-dose series of the inactivated polio virus at age two months, four months, six-toeight months and four-to-six years of age. “This can save lives,” said Wieder.
Four Arrested on Hate Crime Charges in Monsey Attacks It took the Town of Ramapo Police Department just three days to track down a carload of teens who hurled projectiles at unsuspecting pedestrians in the heart of Monsey, with all four arrested on multiple counts, including hate crime charges. Police were able to track down the Ford 150 pickup that was used in the attacks, arresting nineteen-year-old Valley Cottage resident Cody VascakKatchmar and nineteen-year-old Tomkins Cove resident Kristina Fogarty. Two other suspects, ages eighteen and seventeen, were also arrested but not identified by police because of their ages. All four were charged with seconddegree assault as a hate crime, seconddegree reckless endangerment as a hate crime, fourth-degree criminal possession of a weapon, fifth- and sixth-degree conspiracy, second-degree aggravated harassment, and endangering the welfare of a child. Vascak-Katchmar, Fogarty and the eighteen-year-old suspect, who was eligible for youthful offender status, were arraigned in the Town of Ramapo
Court. Vaskcak-Katchmar was transported to the Rockland County jail after being unable to make his bail, which was set at $10,000. Fogarty was released from police custody after posting $2,000 bail, as was the eighteen-year-old suspect who posted $10,000. The seventeen-year-old suspect was released to their parents and will have to appear in the family court’s youth division. As previously reported in The Monsey View, the attack took place in the early morning hours of July 17, with the suspects shooting BBs at two women walking near Rita Avenue and egging two more women walking just past Phyllis Terrace. A third attack took place moments later, with the suspects reportedly shooting BBs at a man walking on West Maple Avenue near Elyon Road. Chaverim canvassed the area for surveillance video and assisted police in their investigation.
Department of Transportation Encouraging Airlines To Waive Fees When Seating Parents Next to Children Dismayed by stories of airlines charging parents extra in order to sit next to their young children, the United States Department of Transportation is taking action, urging airlines to waive seating fees and asking parents to report incidents directly to their Office of Aviation Consumer Protection. DansDeals reported that with more and more seating categories charging passengers for seat selections, the DOT has received complaints about young children being placed away from their parents. In one incident, a four-year-old and an eleven-month-old baby were seated next to strangers, with the unnamed airline saying that there were no federal directives ordering them to comply with family seating. The DOT gave airlines flying in and out of the United States a window of four months to address the issue, saying it would monitor their actions. After that time, the DOT said it would consider what steps it might take to ensure that children under thirteen are seated next to their parents at no additional cost, although airlines would not be required to upgrade a child’s ticket to a higher fare class or premium seat in order to be placed next to their parents. Airlines such as Southwest, which have open seating, could be required to allow families to board first so that those with young children could sit together. DansDeals advised readers who are booking flights with children under thirteen and who do not receive free seat assignments to file a complaint with the DOT at their website, www.airconsumer.dot.gov, or by calling 856-368-4200. Among those who shared their experiences on the site was a reader whose flight was canceled and was reassigned with her husband to one flight while her two toddlers were booked on another flight by themselves. Another posted two separate exchanges with JetBlue, with only one conversation resulting in having their family seated together. The other failed to achieve similar results, with an airline representative saying, “We are familiar with this statement from the DOT. It does not change any laws or guidelines 108

related to air travel … If you select Blue Basic fares on future bookings, a fee will apply for advance seat selection.”
Governor Signs Eichenstein’s SNAP Card Legislation into Law Under a bill cosponsored by Assemblyman Simcha Eichenstein and Senator Julia Salazar, families who use New York State’s SNAP program to put food on the table will have an easier time buying their groceries, with electronic benefit cards now being provided for each head of household instead of just one per family. The bill was signed into law on July 18 by Governor Kathy Hochul. The governor said that she believes the simple act of providing each parent with their own benefits card will protect and empower New Yorkers, particularly now at a time when so many people are experiencing post-COVID financial stress. Eichenstein hailed the move as a “simple, effective and practical solution to a frustrating and senseless problem.” “We’re making sure that all of the guardians who make up our homes have access to their approved benefits at a moment’s notice and do not have to treat one’s card like a relay race baton,” added Salazar.
Smoking Now a Punishable Offense at State Parks and Other Areas Lighting up a cigarette is about to get a lot more expensive, at least for those who enjoy smoking at the park. A bill signed by Governor Kathy Hochul makes smoking a no-no at all parks owned by New York State, with violators facing $50 civil fines. State park parking lots, sidewalks adjoining parks, and areas not used for park purposes are all exempt from this bill. The bill is intended to minimize the risks of secondhand smoke and to 110

keep smokers from dropping cigarette butts on the floor, which creates environmental hazards, explained the Senate sponsor of the bill, Senator Toby Ann Stavisky. “New York’s public parks are family-friendly venues,” said Savitsky. “No one, especially children, should be subjected to secondhand smoke while playing on a playground or enjoying the day at a public beach or campsite.” New York is home to more than 200 state parks. While those in the Catskills and the Adirondacks were exempted from the ban, it is in effect at many others, including Bear Mountain State Park, Harriman State Park, Haverstraw Beach State Park, High Tor State Park, Hook Mountain State Park, Hudson River Park, Nyack Beach State Park, Riverbank State Park, Rockland Lake State Park, Schunnemunk State Park, Shirley Chisholm State Park, Sterling Forest State Park, Tallman Mountain State Park, and Niagara’s many state parks.
Hoping To Save a Local Mother, Physician Assistants Association Runs Kidney Donor Swabbing Event Monsey residents are being called on to exercise their chesed muscles again this Sunday, this time to find a kidney donor for a longtime local resident who experienced kidney failure after contracting COVID. After hearing about the woman’s plight and paying her a visit, Rochel Leah Lehrer, president of Jewish Association of Physician Assistants, became determined to find a kidney for her. Reaching out to Renewal, she scheduled a cheek-swabbing event in her home for Sunday, July 31, in the hopes of finding a life-saving match for the mother of four who is currently undergoing dialysis three times a week. The event will take place from 2 to 5 p.m. at 51 Regina Road. “All it takes is one person to save her life,” said Lehrer.

CHAPTER 20 RECAP: Zach and Izzy’s first day in Lodz doesn’t exactly go as planned. After a long and harrowing cab ride, they arrive at Lodz City Hall to discover that the building is already closed for the night. Before heading off to find dinner, Izzy insists on one last stop — at the old Lodzer shtiebel, where they’re about to daven Maariv.
T
he building was locked, but it didn’t remain so for very long. An ancient-looking man with sagging cheeks under a thick ushanka hobbled slowly up the steps. He stopped when he noticed Zach and Izzy. “Kim jestes?” “I’m sorry, we don’t speak Polish,” Izzy said. “Do you speak English?” The man eyed them, eyes narrowing suspiciously. He gave a subtle shake of his head. “Du redst Yiddish?” The old man’s face softened slightly, and something like warmth flickered in his eyes. “Yoh.” Zach stepped forward, beaming. “Ah gutten! Es iz fayn eich tzu batrefen.” As Izzy stood gaping, Zach stuck out his hand. “Ich bin Zach.” The old man introduced himself as Velvel Abromowitz. He was the gabbai of the shtiebel. He unlocked the door with a splotched, shaking hand, and inside,
they saw a huge room, with thick wooden benches that seemed almost petrified with age. Rude shelves were stacked against the back wall, mostly empty. A few held siddurim and chumashim, and there was a giant, tattered set of Shas stacked sideways. But the rest stored only dust and memories. An ornately carved bimah in the center of the room recalled a time when a great and proud tzibbur prayed in this room, but those days were long gone. The silence, thick and confident, recoiled angrily at the intrusion of footsteps. Velvel chatted with them as he went, speaking in a slow and refined Yiddish, worn smooth with the weight of years and thinned out with troubles. Izzy figured Velvel couldn’t be younger than eighty, possibly quite a bit older. He wondered if the man had any children, and whether they kept in touch. The man seemed perfectly capable of handling himself, but Izzy didn’t like to think what might happen to

him alone if an emergency came up. Velvel told them that the shul had once been the seat of a great chassidus (which they knew), and that the place had burned down in 1860, and again in 1892 (which they had not). At the time of the second fire, the Rebbe was Reb Chaim Simcha, Izzy’s brother’s namesake. The Rebbe brought his tzibbur to the ruins the next day and publicly read the kinnah of Sha’ali Serufah Ba’eish. “What’s that?” Zach asked in English. “A dirge. We read it on Tisha B’Av,” Izzy answered quietly. “It’s about the destruction of the Beis Hamikdash. The line means, ‘The thing I desired burned in fire.’” “After the shul was rebuilt,” Velvel continued. “Reb Chaim Simcha said every shul is a mikdash me’at. The Beis Hamikdash was destroyed twice, but not three times. And the Rebbe was gozer that the same should be with our shtiebel. This time, it should stand until Moshiach.” “His bracha worked,” Izzy pointed out. “It’s still here.” “When the German beasts arrived, yemach shemam, they filled the shul with kindling and gasoline and lit it up. It burned all night and into the next day. But when the fire died, they found the building still standing. A few scorch marks on the floor were all their evil fires accomplished.” “Well, the building is made of stone,” Zach pointed out. Velvel gave him a withering glare. “Der paroches iz nisht shtein.” More people began to arrive. There were two men in their mid-twenties, a teenager in jeans and a t-shirt, and a man in a checkered shirt who seemed rather above middle age. The rest of the minyan attendees were in their sixties and seventies. They ambled in with the slow, comfortable gait of people who had watched the world change without missing a day in this
shul. Izzy felt strongly out of place. He wasn’t unwelcome, but he knew he didn’t belong. His very presence was an intrusion into a private, self-contained world. He shook the feeling off, grabbed a siddur, and drifted over to Zach. “I didn’t know you spoke Yiddish.” “My step-mom spoke Yiddish in the house,” Zach explained. “She immigrated in the ‘90s. I don’t think she was ever really comfortable with English, but she hated Russian. So Yiddish it was.” “Do you know how to daven?” Zach shook his head. “I can barely read Hebrew.” Izzy chewed on his inner cheek. “Do you… do you want to daven?” “Sure.” Zach grinned. “I shot golf with a priest and had a Reform bar mitzvah. I think I can manage to pray with the Orthodox.” Izzy chuckled nervously. “Right. Do you, um, do you know any prayers? Shema, maybe?” “Shema Yisroel…?” “That’s the one, yeah. We’re gonna say that, so just say it with us. For the rest of it, y’know, talk. To Hashem. Quietly, but out loud.” Zach looked somewhat amused as Izzy handed him a siddur opened to the right page. “Whatever you say, pal.” * * * * *
Lenny snapped his laptop shut. No matter how often he checked his portfolio, nothing magically improved. He had to admit it; he’d put way too much faith in get-rich-quick schemes, and now he was paying for it. He’d always been this way. Back when he’d been a contractor specializing in large-scale home remodels, he’d done the same thing. He’d done good work, hired the right people, and gotten jobs done well. But he was hun-
gry for more. He wanted an empire, not a day job. So he’d taken every job he could find, no matter how overburdened they were. His foremen protested. He had to either drop some projects or hire more people. But Lenny couldn’t hire them fast enough. Instead, he handed out bonuses and ratcheted up the pressure. It worked for a time. Money flooded in, the jobs turned around like clockwork. Lenny was on top of the world. And then, he’d gotten the chance of a lifetime. Bright Meadows was a massive subdivision that was being purchased as a package by Rina Gordon, multimillionaire businesswoman with investments all over the globe. Bright Meadows, with 46 units, was her biggest foray yet into real estate. They would be gutted and rebuilt, and then rented or sold as a self-contained frum community. And they’d offered Lenny the contract. It was to be his crowning achievement, the deal that would push him into the big leagues. Of course he’d taken it; he signed immediately. The next day, he’d gathered with his senior foremen to share the good news. But instead of cheering, his people walked. Joe Cattelini had quit on the spot, insisting that his people couldn’t keep up with the work as it was. Fred Carruthers and John Cho offered to stay on for a time, but they made it clear that they wouldn’t lift a finger on the Gordon project. They could see where this company was going, and it was time for them to move on. Lenny scrambled to find replacements, but it soon became clear that the Gordon project wasn’t going to happen. Several of his other projects were on shaky ground, too. He canceled with Gordon, paid the hefty fine for backing out, and was left with just enough money to keep going while he rushed all the jobs he had on July 27, 2022

backlog. Without sufficient manpower and oversight, these were completed poorly, late and over budget. In the end, Lenny’s reputation was shot. He couldn’t even find sufficient work for his heavily reduced staff. His company went bust. It was the same when he invested in stocks. He’d done well, up to a point, then threw caution to the winds (along with his few remaining dollars). Ambition, Lenny now realized, was his greatest flaw. And so, looking at that computer and seeing his prospects falling apart yet again, Lenny Bergman made the decision to change. From now on, he would follow the rules, a day’s work for a day’s wages, and come home happy. No more schemes, no more investments. No more trouble. He was done with that mentality. This time was different. It was a sure-fire thing. But either way, it was going to be his last… * * * * *
“Shema Yisroel, Hashem Elokeinu, Hashem Echad…” Zach stared down at the siddur blankly. He only knew that one line. So now what? He looked through the shul at the old men whispering around him. Four generations ago, his greatgrandfather had led a community of some several hundred members. Now there were sixteen people present, himself and Izzy included. How the mighty have fallen, Zach mused. The shul may have miraculously withstood the Nazis, but the people hadn’t. It didn’t seem fair. Zach felt tiny in this huge, almost empty room. It was like reverse claustrophobia. It was too big, too expectant of great things. They were only sixteen people, for crying out loud! He shivered and looked back into his siddur. He should try to pray more. What was that Izzy had said? Talk to Hashem. Quietly, but out loud. He closed his eyes and waited until the words came. “Hiya,” Zach began. No, that wasn’t right. He tried again. “It’s, uh, it’s Zach. Heh. You know that, obviously… So. I’ve been on this wild ride lately. Your doing, I guess. And, ah, I’ve been 118

thinking about what the rabbi told me. Remember? He said that a string of bad fortune means I owe an apology to someone I’m close with.” Eyes still closed, Zach frowned. “So I did some soul-searching. Who do I owe an apology to?” His grip on the bench in front of him tightened. His jaw clenched. “And I realized that can’t be the answer. ‘Cause I’m not close with anyone.” He forced himself to relax. “Isn’t that terrible? I have lots of friends, but they’d all sell me up the river for a few hundred votes. It’s downright depressing. I guess that’s why I took this trip. To sort of figure some stuff out. Maybe figure out where it went south for me.” Zach opened his eyes self-consciously. Weren’t you supposed to ask for things when you prayed? He seemed to remember hearing that. He squeezed his eyes shut again and concentrated. “You can help me with that, right? I mean, would You help with that? Please? Uh, thanks.” He opened his eyes again and sank down into his seat. All around him, the men stood at attention, feet together, murmuring prayers into the giant empty hall. They were almost completely silent, yet the cavernous building echoed loudly with their whispers. And suddenly Zach understood. There might not be many people here. But the room was still as full of prayer as always. It probably always would be. He hoped so. With that thought to keep him company, he flipped through the siddur at random as the kehillah of his great-grandfather finished talking to Hashem. A short time later, after the last Kaddish rang out (Zach knew how to answer that, at least), the tzibbur turned to leave. In Yiddish, Velvel asked Izzy, “So what brings you here?” “I’m a Ginzburg,” Izzy explained. “Reb Menashe was my great-grandfather. So…” Velvel’s eyes widened. “Reb Menashe was sandek at my bris,” he said softly. “I remember his drashos in shul.” He pointed to the empty, dustcovered chair that faced the congregation. “He used to sit right there…” TO BE CONTINUED...

CHAPTER
NINE
Recap: Disguised as an old peasant couple, Gonzalo and Sebastian do some “touring” near the water and plan their cross to Morocco in several days’ time when the moon will have waned.
“Y
ou know, Gonzalo, I am very excited about going to Paris and then to Amsterdam. It’s not only because I’ll be reunited with my family. It’s because I need to know more about this covenant and this mission. I need to know more about what it means to be Jewish. I’m risking my life to be a Jew, but I really know so little about it.” “So how do you know that it’s worth the risk? I mean, hundreds of thousands of Jews here in Spain accepted Christianity rather than risk their lives. And no matter what the Inquisition says, we all know that most of the conversos did abandon their Judaism. So why are you so set on being Jewish?” Sebastian was silent for a moment or two. “That’s a hard question to answer, Gonzalo. The first answer that comes to mind is that my father died for his Jewishness, and if I were to abandon it, I would be dishonoring his memory. But it is much more than that. While my father was away, when we thought he had perished at sea, he spent two years studying with a rabbi in Poland. He told me that discovering the holy Torah was the most incredible experience of his life. I saw it in his eyes whenever he spoke about it. My father was a different person when he came back, a more exalted person. He was in touch with the Divine. That is what being Jewish meant to him, and he was willing to die for it. I want to make that discovery too. I want to touch the Divine. I want to transcend the ordinary human existence and live with unending inspiration, spirituality and… and… yes… honor. If I was

once willing to die for the honor of the King of Spain, I am certainly willing to die for the honor of the Almighty, the King of the Universe.” “And I am willing to die for the honor of my liege lord Don Pedro, so I understand what you are saying. And I hope you find what you seek. But I have traveled to other lands, and I have seen many of the Jews that live there. It does not seem to me that all of them live with that kind of inspiration.” “I admit that I know very little, Gonzalo. But I think that those who spend a good part of their time learning the Torah, as my father did during those two years in Poland — those are people who live with inspiration. And I also believe that their inspiration carries over to the rest of the Jewish people.” “As I said,” Gonzalo replied, “I hope you find what you seek. Anyway, getting back to what we were discussing before, Morocco is not the best place for us. If this greedy Moulay Ismail gets hold of you, he just might decide to sell you back to Spain. No, I think our best hope is to go to Tangier. I understand that Moulay Ismail is trying to get his hands on the port, but for the time being, it’s in the hands of the British. And I heard that there’s a small Jewish community there. If we head a little west from Tarifa, it should take us straight into Tangier. Unless we get swept out into the ocean, that is.” * * * * *
On a dark moonless night, two silent figures dressed in black from head to toe ran across the beach to the west of Tarifa. They pulled a skiff from its place of concealment in the underbrush and carried it to the water. The skiff glided smoothly away from the shore as the two men paddled steadily. The weak silvery starlight reflecting off the water only underscored the immense darkness that surrounded them, just as the soft gurgling murmur of the sea underscored the vast silence of the night. After about an hour, a few faint points of light appeared on the murky Moroccan coastline. “Look to you right,” whispered Gonzalo. “That’s Tangier.” “What’s that other light?” “What light? Where?” “Over there,” said Sebastian pointing into the dark. “A little to the east of Tangier. There’s a faint light and it’s moving in this direction.” “It must be a Moroccan coastal patrol boat. The Moroccans are blockading Tangier, but what are they doing wide awake in the middle of the night?” “Looking for people like us. What do we do?” “We’re not so far from the Moroccan coast. Let’s make a run for it. We’ll find a place to hide near the shore until the coast is clear, and then we’ll get over to Tangier.” As the patrol boat drew closer, they paddled vigorously for the shoreline. It was a race against time. The shore was tantalizingly close. It seemed that there would be enough time to get there undetected. All of a sudden, they felt themselves being pulled westward toward the patrol boat and the lights of Tangier beyond. They had run into an outward current, and all their paddling could not change the direction of their movement. Instead of going against the current, they decided to go with the flow and gradually edge past the current into calmer waters. After a desperate struggle against the sea, they finally managed to free themselves from the clutches of the current. Once again, they turned toward the shore, but the patrol boat loomed ahead, and it was coming directly toward them. Someone must have spotted the skiff, and now the patrol boat was on its way to investigate. “Don Sebastian,” said Gonzalo, “the time has come to go for a swim. They can see the boat, but maybe they won’t be able to spot us in the water. Try not to splash too much when you swim. If we get separated, we’ll meet in Tangier.” The two men dove over the side of the skiff and struck out side by side toward the shore. They swam slowly with even strokes so as not to attract the attention of the looming patrol boat and also to preserve their strength. The dark outline of the coast seemed close, but they both knew that it was misleading. After a while, they could see the running lights of the patrol boats turn away from the general location where they had abandoned their skiff. For the moment, they were safe. They turned onto their backs to float for a few minutes and catch their breaths. The soft undulation of the waves rocked them back and forth gently. Far off to the east, a faint line of dusty light appeared on the horizon, the first harbinger of the morning sun. “Gonzalo,” called Sebastian in a hoarse whisper.
I’M RISKING MY LIFE TO BE A JEW, BUT I REALLY KNOW SO LITTLE ABOUT IT.”
SOMEONE MUST HAVE SPOTTED THE SKIFF, AND NOW THE PATROL BOAT WAS ON ITS WAY TO INVESTIGATE. “What’s the matter?” “I think I saw something.” “What did you see?” “I think I saw a dorsal fin pass by.” “A dorsal fin? Like the thing on the back of a shark?” “Yes, that’s what I mean,” said Sebastian. “It’s still quite dark, but I thought I saw a dorsal fin cutting through the water.” “Where?” “Off to the west. About two hundred paces away.” “It could be a shark,” said Gonzalo. “I heard there are sharks in these waters.” “So what do we do?” “We don’t panic. I heard that sharks bump you before they attack and that if you hit them on the nose with your fist they go away.” “Hit the shark on the nose?” said Sebastian, fighting hard to keep back the panic. “Heaven help us. And what if there are a few of them?” “Say a Jewish prayer, and let’s swim for the shore as fast as we can. But only smooth strokes. I heard that the sharks are attracted by thrashing and splashing.” “Don’t be funny, Gonzalo. This isn’t a time for humor.” “I was being perfectly serious, Don Sebastian. Let’s move.” They rolled over onto their stomachs and swam for the shore as quickly as stealth would allow. Soon they could feel the undertow of water returning seaward from the shore. They were almost there. Minutes later, their feet scraped the rocky bottom. They ran the rest of the way to the shore as fast as their legs could carry them. Only then did they turn to scan the straits behind them. The horizon had brightened somewhat, and off in the distance, a single dorsal fin cut through the water and was moving toward the west. The two men clambered up the rocky shore to the concealment of some scrub coastline vegetation where they could rest and take stock. The outlines of the buildings of Tangier loomed very close. Although they had swum straight for the shore, the edge of the current had apparently drawn them westward and put them ashore closer to the British colony. “Do you have the money, Gonzalo?” “The money is safe,” said Gonzalo, tapping his waist. “The money belt really weighed me down out there in the water, but I couldn’t very well drop it. We’re going to need money in Tangier.” “Absolutely. How far do you think it is to Tangier?” “If we walk fast, we should reach Tangier in less than an hour.” Sebastian stood up. “Fine. Let’s go.” “We can rest here for a few more minutes if you wish.” 126

“DON SEBASTIAN,” SAID GONZALO, “THE TIME HAS COME TO GO FOR A SWIM.” “We can rest in Tangier.” “Spoken like a true soldier,” said Gonzalo as he stood up. “Let’s go.” As they neared the city, the sound of hoofbeats coming from behind them intruded on the stillness of the early morning. A cloud of dust signaled a group of horsemen approaching at a gallop. It could only be Moroccan soldiers, and they could not be expected to be friendly. The two men looked around desperately for a place to take cover, but there was none. Sebastian pointed to where a few clumps of seaweed and some driftwood had washed up on the beach. The men had been out of the water for a half-hour, but their clothes were still soaking with seawater. They rolled around on the beach until they were covered head to toe with sand. Then they lay down behind the seaweed and the driftwood and hoped for the best. The hoofbeats drew closer, and then they slowed down, as if the riders were searching for something or someone. Sebastian and Gonzalo remained where they were, thankful for the last remnants of darkness, and made sure to take only short shallow breaths to minimize the movement of their bodies. The riders dismounted and shouted to each other in Arabic. But after a few tense minutes, they lost interest in their search and rode off. Sebastian and Gonzalo remained where they were for a few moments longer. Then they returned to the road and ran toward Tangier. Suddenly, three men in red coats and cocked hats emerged from a roadside hut and blocked their way. They were armed with sabers and daggers, and they carried matchlock muskets in their arms. One of them stepped forward and held up his hand. “Halt!” he shouted in English. “Who are you?” “Habla español?” asked Gonzalo. “Sorry, mate. We only speak the King’s English.” “I speak a little English,” said Sebastian. “Are you British soldiers?” “That we are, mate. And who might you be?” “My name is Sebastian Dominguez, and this is my friend Gonzalo Sanchez. We are fugitives from the Spanish, who are trying to kill us. We are also trying to avoid capture by the Moroccans. When their patrol passed, we were hiding on the beach. Now, we want to seek refuge in Tangier.” “Let me get this straight, mate,” said the British soldier. “You two are enemies of the Spanish and the Moroccans? You’re running for your lives?” “Si, señor.” “Well, as our friends the Arabs say, the enemy of my enemy is my friend. Welcome to Tangier, mates.” To be continued…

“...There are two bronze columns taken from the Beis Hamikdash, the handiwork of Shlomo Hamelech, each column being engraved ‘Shlomo ben Dovid.’ The Jews of Rome told me that every year on the 9th of Av the columns were found exuding moisture like water. There is also the cave where Titus the son of Aspasianus stored the vessels of the Beis Hamikdash that he brought from Yerushalayim. There is also a cave in a hill on one bank of the River Tiber where are the graves of the Asarah Harugei Malchus.” –From the diary of Rabbi Binyamin of Tudela regarding the columns from the Beis Hamikdash found in a church in Rome

LONG AGO,
in the days of the Rambam, lived one Rabbi Binyamin from Tudela, Spain. Though little is known about his personal life, the legacy he left behind resounds in the halls of academia to this very day. What is well known is that Rabbi Binyamin was well versed in Torah-learning and lived according to halacha. It was around the year 1165 that Rabbi Binyamin set out on a trip across much of Europe, Asia and the Middle East for reasons not known to historians. As he traveled, he connected with Jewish communities wherever they were to be found, recording his observations for posterPainting of Rabbi Binyamin from Tudela ity. While some places boasted bustling Yiddish metropolises, solitary Yidden could also be found scattered along the way.

In the year 1173, Rabbi Binyamin returned home, his trip complete, carrying his travel diary entitled Masa’os Binyamin. This manuscript has been translated from the original Lashon Kodesh into many different languages and is praised for offering a rare glimpse into the world that was. In addition to his accounts of communities of the diaspora, Rabbi Binyamin wrote beautiful descriptions of Eretz Yisroel. Though we won’t delve into those now, we will gather some insights into the diaspora of the Middle Ages through the descriptions brought to us by Rabbi Binyamin from Tudela.

Lunel, France Part of his travels took Rabbi Binyamin to France, where he visited the city of Lunel. Lunel is believed to have been established in the first century by Yidden from Yericho, and though the community was a small one, it was a bastion of learning and chesed, in which the Torah was studied both day and night. At their head was Rabbeinu Meshulam, a chacham of great wisdom, wealth and — as Rabbi Binyamin attests — chesed: “The students that come from distant lands to learn the Law are taught, boarded, lodged Wall of the ancient shul of Lunel and clothed by the congregation, so long as they attend the beis medrash. The community has wise, understanding and saintly men of great benevolence, who lend a helping hand to all their brethren both far and near. The kehillah consists of 300 Yidden — may Hashem preserve them.”
With gold from his own pocket, Rabbeinu Meshulam and his kehillah supported whoever came to drink from the wellsprings of Torah in Lunel.
Baghdad, Iraq (Bavel) Baghdad is a city with a long Jewish history. Ever since the Yidden were exiled from Eretz Yisroel to Bavel, it saw Jewish generations come and go and witnessed the Torah nurture each of them. Rabbi Binyamin writes of the city: “In Baghdad there are about 40,000 Yidden, and they live in security, prosperity and honor under the great Caliph, and among them are great sages, the heads of the yeshivos engaged in the study of the Law… In Baghdad there are 28 shuls… The Great Synagogue of the Resh Galusa has columns of marble of Great Synagogue of Baghdad 154

various colors overlaid with silver and gold, and on these columns are sentences of Tehillim in golden letters. And in front of the aron are about ten steps of marble; on the topmost are the seats of the Resh Galusa and the princes of Beis Dovid.”
In his diary, Rabbi Binyamin lists the heads of the yeshivos and other notable locals, including Rabbi Elazar ben Tzemach, whose pedigree “reaches to Shmuel Hanavi, [a descendant] of Korach.” Of him Rabbi Binyamin writes: “He and his brethren know how to chant the melodies as did the singers at the time the Beis Hamikdash was standing.”
Rabbi Binyamin proclaims the Caliph — Emir al Mumunim al Babasi, of the family of Mohammed — as kind to the Yidden and well-versed in Lashon Kodesh and halacha. He praises the ruler for his benevolence and describes how the Caliph maintained a free health care system for those who “be sick or insane.” Despite that benevolence, however, the Caliph had to take unusual, seemingly cruel measures to protect himself from having his power usurped: “Each of his brothers and the members of his family has an abode in his palace, but they are all fettered in chains of iron, and guards are placed over each of their houses that they may not rise against the great Caliph. For once it happened to a predecessor that his brothers rose up against him and proclaimed one of themselves as Caliph; then it was decreed that all members of his family should be bound, that they might not rise up against the ruling Caliph. Each of them resides in his palace in great splendor and they own villages and towns and their stewards bring them the tributes thereof, and they eat and drink and rejoice all the days of their life.”
The Caliph maintained a special relationship with the Resh Galusa, Rabbi Daniel ben Chisdai, zt”l, (who, Rabbi Binyamin wrote, “possesses a book of yichus going back as far as Dovid Melech Yisroel”) and treated him with great respect: “For thus Mohammed commanded concerning [Rabbi Daniel] ... that every one, whether Mohammedan or Jew, or belonging to any other nation in his dominion, should rise up before him and salute him, and that any one who should refuse to rise up should receive one hundred lashes.”

The Reish Galusa visited the Caliph on a weekly basis and was afforded great honor. As Rabbi Binyamin traveled through Bavel, he came upon what were said to be the ruins of Migdal Bavel, and he described its gigantic proportions: “The length of its foundation is about two miles, the breadth of the tower is about forty cubits, and the length thereof two hundred cubits… One can see from there a view of twenty miles in extent, as the land is level. There fell fire from heaven into the midst of the tower, which split it to its very depths.”
In one part of his diary, Rabbi Binyamin describes the false moshiach David Alroy, who had misled many Yidden in the Bavel area: “There arose this day ten years ago a man named David Alroy of the city of Amadia. He studied under Chisdai, the Resh Galusa, and under the rosh yeshivah Gaon Yaakov in the city of Baghdad, and he was well-versed in the Law of Yisroel, in halacha as well as in the Talmud, and in all the wisdom of the Mohammedans, also in secular literature and in the writings of magicians and soothsayers…. He showed signs by pretended miracles to the Jews and said, ‘Hakadosh Baruch Hu sent me to capture Yerushalayim and to free you from the yoke of the non-Jews.’ And the Jews believed in him and called him their moshiach.”
His diary then goes on to describe how the king of Persia heard of Alroy’s plans and summoned him, then imprisoned him for planning to usurp his throne. After three days, Alroy appeared before the king, having cast off his chains, escaping captivity. As he stood before the king and spoke, the attendants exclaimed that though they could hear him, they could not see him. Through use of the occult arts, Alroy had made himself invisible. Alroy then told the king that he would be on his way, whereupon he traveled to a river and placed his cloak upon the water. He then proceeded to magically ride across the river. Disturbed by this master of occult arts who had managed to escape his grasp, the Persian king sent word to the Caliph at Baghdad, who threatened to slay all the Jews in his kingdom should Alroy not be constrained. Despite the Resh Galusa and the rosh yeshivah Gaon Yaakov threatening to put him into cherem, Alroy refused to accept the warning, putting the Yidden in danger. But Hashem was watching over them, and placed in the heart of one of the vassal kings of Persia to take matters into his own hands. The vassal king bribed David Alroy’s fatherin-law to kill him while he slept, putting an end to Alroy’s messianic aspirations. 158

Port of Khulam, India One of the extremely important ports of trade that Rabbi Binyamin visited was the port of Khulam, which was bustling with merchants from Asia and the Middle East. He writes of the inhabitants and their land: “These are the sons of Cush, and are all black in color. They are honest in commerce… From Pesach to Rosh Hashanah, that is all during the summer, no man can go out of his house because of the sun, for the heat in that country is intense… They go forth and kindle lights in all the marketplaces and all the streets, and then do their work and business at nighttime.”
What is especially fascinating is that Rabbi Binyamin mentions in passing the Jews of India who still exist to this day, known as the Cochinis. (Two other Indian Jewish groups, known as the Bnei Yisroel and the Baghdadis, were likely not in India at the time Rabbi Binyamin wrote his diary.) “The inhabitants are all black, and the Jews also. The latter are good and benevolent. They know the Law of Moshe and the prophets, and to a small extent, the Talmud and halacha.”

Egypt In an interesting observation about Egypt, Rabbi Binyamin writes that when the Nile rises every year, its waters overflow, covering the land equivalent to a fifteen-day journey from the banks of the river. The natives dug trenches, he wrote, allowing the waters of the Nile to fill them. When the waters receded, the trenches remained full of fish, which the natives ate and sold. He also writes that “the storehouses of Yosef, of blessed memory, are to be found in great numbers in many places. They are built of lime and stone, and are exceedingly strong.”
Rabbi Binyamin MiTudela was the epitome of “the wandering Jew,” with the soles of his feet walking upon the soil of many foreign lands. One day, very soon, may all of the dispersed Yidden be gathered in. If you’ve ever been in Rechavia, you may have noticed a street named Rechov Binyamin MiTudela. A street in the old Jewish Quarter of Tudela, Spain, also bears his name.

The Other Benjamin Rabbi Binyamin’s legacy sparked the imagination of a Jewish man by the name of Yisroel Yosef Benjamin in the 19th century. He adopted the pen name “Benjamin II,” referencing Rabbi Binyamin of Tudela, and set out in search of the Ten Lost Tribes, traveling across Europe and the Middle East in his quest to find them. One famous section of his book details the difficulties Jews were made to suffer in Persia. It is a true reminder of what it means to be in galus: Throughout Persia the Jews are obliged to live in a part of the town separated from the other inhabitants; for they are considered as unclean creatures, who bring contamination with their presence...Under the pretext of their being unclean, they are treated with the greatest severity, and should they enter a street inhabited by Mussulmans, they are pelted by the boys and mobs with stones and dirt. For the same reason they are forbidden to go out when it rains; for it is said the rain would wash dirt off them, which would sully the feet of the Mussulmans.
Benjamin II also described how the Jews were not allowed to engage in trade, and even when one purchased an item, he was not allowed to inspect it; he was forced to accept whatever the Persian shopkeepers gave him. Beatings of Yidden were common occurrences, and they dared not to protest for fear of forfeiting their very lives. Even small children were “punished with blows.” Despite his travels, Benjamin II failed at finding the Ten Lost Tribes. May this year be the year that all tribes are reunited in Yerushalayim.

she set aside a hefty amount for her own family. That straw became Mirish’s sons’ prized possessions and was passed down as an heirloom to her descendants. One of her sons, who emigrated to Tzefas in the year 1879, took a generous amount of the straw with him. And so, the family legacy continued…. Fast forward to the year 2022 and the Russo-Ukrainian war. “It was about a week before Purim,” Rabbi Yitzchak Pesach Schmerler of Haifa begins. He is a descendant of Reb Elimelech of Lizhensk, the son of the Rosh Yeshivah of Sanz, Rabbi Shmuel Eliyahu Schmerler. “A Yid with whom I daven approached me, telling me that he was about to travel to Ukraine to help evacuate an elderly Jewish couple from the war zone. He asked if I could please give him some of the famous straw in my possession as a segulah.” Requests of this sort were no novelty to Rabbi Schmerler, but the story that emerged afterward was nothing short of a modern-day miracle. “I gave the man a piece of straw in a laminated segu-
hen Reb Elimelech of Lizhensk passed away in the year 1787, he left behind five adult children and all of his worldly possessions. Though Reb Elimelech was known as a tzaddik of meager means, it was obvious to his children that whatever possessions he’d left were permeated with kedusha. It was also obvious that Reb Elimelech’s chassidim would be happy to pay good money in order to own some of these coveted holy items.
One of Reb Elimelech’s children, Miriam (or Mirish, as she was affectionately called), was especially beloved by her father. Mirish became a widow at a young age, and she was left with five young sons. After her father passed away, Mirish was invited by her father’s talmid, Reb Menachem Mendel of Rimanov, to come and live in his hometown. Reb Menachem Mendel promised to help support Mirish and her children, and Mirish agreed to the move. To do something to support herself, however, she took her father’s mattress with her to Rimanov. Plenty of Reb Elimelech’s chassidim lived there, she knew, and they’d be happy to pay to own a portion of the mattress. And so it was. Mirish and her family moved to Rimanov with Reb Elimelech’s straw-filled mattress. Word spread quickly that Mirish had her father’s holy mattress in her HE NEEDED TO GET AS FAR AWAY possession and that she was selling its straw. Chassidim in Rimanov and FROM THE SCENE AS POSSIBLE the surrounding hamlets happily BEFORE SOMEONE SUSPECTED HIM purchased the straw as a means of connecting to the tzaddik. lah card and bid him tzeischem l’shalom. The man then explained that he’d been asked by a Jew who lives in Eretz Yisroel and had elderly parents in Ukraine to try and rescue them. Having partaken in somewhat perilous missions in the past, this person was willing to take the risk again, but he wanted a segulah for protection. He planned on flying to Moldova, and somehow making his way from there into Ukraine.” One week later, the man returned to Eretz Yisroel with the elderly Jewish couple in tow — and with a tale to share. “My first leg of the journey went according to plan,” the Yid told Rabbi Schmerler when they met again. “I traveled via plane to Moldova and met up with a smuggler in a bread truck at the border. Several other people, all non-Jews, had arranged to travel with this smuggler as well.” Since bread is an essential item, the truck was allowed to cross the Moldovan-Ukrainian border undisturbed. The passengers in the back of the truck traveled along for hours when finally the driver called out in broken English, “That’s it. We’ve almost reached our destination.” Suddenly, BOOM! A missile landed on the roof of the truck, and the Yid was thrown up into the air. A moment later, he landed several feet away in a field on the side of the highway. The Yid examined his body. He was badly banged up and bruised, but completely conscious. And there was no searing pain to signal that any of his bones were broken. “I’m alive,” the Yid murmured to himself. He looked back at the truck out of which he’d just been tossed — and saw that it was consumed by fire. Awestruck and frightened, the Yid opened his mouth to scream. No sound emerged from his mouth, however, and his voice of reason quickly took over. He needed to leave the area. He needed to get as far away from the scene as possible before someone suspected him of somehow being connected to the attack. “I felt around in my pockets,” the Yid told Rabbi Schmerler, “but I had nothing on me aside from my phone — which wasn’t working — a bit of money, and the straw-filled segulah card. Everything else was in my suitcase in the back of the burning truck. And I realized, with utter clarity, that my life had been spared due to the holy straw in my pocket.” Dazed still, the Yid got up slowly. Before he had a chance to go anywhere, however, two Ukrainian army jeeps appeared on the scene. “Fire. An overturned bread truck,” the soldiers called to

I See You by:
NECHAMA SCHWARZ
It is among rows of detergents and fluorescent-colored shmattes that I see her. Her back is slightly stooped, and her trembling hand grasps her shopping basket. She is unaware that I am looking at her, an innocent old lady doing her shopping. And somehow, I cannot tear my eyes away.
I know her by sight; I’ve been living in these parts long enough. She lives alone, hardened by life’s challenges. Husband long gone, no children. How does she do this thing called Life? How does she carry on, brave the blustering world that’s moving faster than she can ever catch up with? How is she here, in this little hardware store, buying screws and sponges and stain remover? She grasps for the paper clips on the top shelf, gnarled hands brushing the colorful wrappers, and even on tiptoes, she cannot reach them. She stands, back bowed, and waits. Not wanting to ask, to appear needy. My hands shake as I get the package down for her, almost ashamed of my agility, of the ease of my movements. Yet when she looks at me, a smile breaking her face into a network of lines, I see no bitterness in her eyes. “Thank you,” she says, her voice rusty and old, and I am surprised when I feel my eyes prickle. No, no, I want to tell her. To take her hand into mine, look into the depths of those watery eyes. Thank you for being an inspiration just by being here. For smiling at the world when it
doesn’t smile back. I will think of you when my day isn’t going so well, so I may smile too. But hearts don’t talk — not out loud, anyway — and I just flash her a quick smile before carrying on. As I pay I spot her, painstakingly forging on. And before I brave the winds of the outdoors, the carpools and suppers and tasks that call my name, I take one more look at her, but a slip of a woman, and wish I could have spoken.
* * * * * It’s late, it’s late. I steal a hurried glance at my watch and at the line in front of me, and wonder how long this will take. Seriously, all I have is a package of croutons. Shlomie refuses to eat his soup without them, but I should know by now that a trip to the grocery takes longer than ten minutes. A sudden commotion at the front of the line startles me out of my reverie, and I peer at the girl who is paying. I know her from
somewhere, vague recognition tickling the edge of my senses. Who is she? “Rosenberger, you said your name was?” the cashier practically bellows, and it is then that everything clicks together. Rosenberger. Everyone in town has heard about what happened. They had moved recently from Eretz Yisroel, hoping for an easier, better life in this land paved with gold. But then the mother died, a swift illness leaving six small orphans. A world shattered, a family torn asunder with no one to hold their hand. I remember seeing an ad for them — cause match, 36 hours, help six orphans who cry for their mother — all garish graphics and colors that pull at your heartstrings and make you quickly turn the page to the ad about the shoe store that is having a sale you can’t miss. But here she is, the oldest daughter, and she looks... good. Hair well-styled, good color, Gucci bag swinging from her shoulder. Fake — I can tell these things from a mile away — but still. “Acount’s full,” the cashier says, his voice bored. “Sorry — can’t let this bill go through.” The shame is so real, you could almost touch it. It rolls off her in waves, red crawling slowly up her neck to shade her face. A full cart, piled not with Thousand Island salad dressing, Greek yogurts and cheesecakes, but with bread, milk, eggs. I lower my eyes, heart aching, and stare at my lone bag of croutons with an interest it does not deserve. I wish I could look this girl in the eye, cup her pretty face in my hands, and talk to her. You have courage, I would tell her. A courage that many of us don’t have, even at 30 or 40 or 50. I watch you not with pity, but with awe. You will yet go far — so keep going, keep moving. Get up after this fall, rebuild your bruised confidence, and know that this too will pass. 180

But I do not know her, and she does not know me. So I study the nutrient value, or lack thereof, of my poor croutons, take another look at my watch, and wonder when I have gotten so old that my eyes start tearing every time I go shopping.
* * * * * The sun sits on my shoulders like a heavy blanket. I’d been looking forward to these weeks of intense heat, forgetting just how sweltering they are. Now summer’s here at last, but it is so hot. The buildings ahead become a hazy, gritty outline, and this walk home from the park feels like wading through syrup, the heat is so thick. The stroller is heavy, my limbs clumsy, and I hear my son’s voice from somewhere, somewhere beyond the bang bang of this pounding headache. “...So Ma, it’s amazing, it has, like, five settings you can put it on, — bang bang — and it changes color...” I’m sure it’s amazing, darling. Really, whatever you say. I grit my teeth and push on. Almost there. The sound is so startling, I even forget about my headache. I swivel my head, and I see him. A boy, lying on the floor. Crying. A boy who really looks too big to lose himself like this, in the middle of the street. But he cries, shrieks, thrashes, and the heat — the heat! Now all I see is the mother, a regular normal mother, if there ever is such a thing. She has a cute sheitel, sticky bangs and a flushed face. Plus a bunch of sweaty, tired kids.

And suddenly, she is crouching low beside him, a reassuring hand on his shoulder, her voice gentle and low and patient. The world around me slows, stills, the boy’s cries the only sound I hear now, slowly losing power and momentum as they fade to a pitiful whimper. And I — I cannot help but simply stare. How did you just do that? I want to ask her as I take her quivering arm in mine. No one will tell you this, but I wish I could. You are incredible. And in the days and nights ahead, the hard times and tantrums that are sure to come, when all you want to do is give up from sheer exhaustion, please remember that.
* * * * * I see you everywhere; I have so much to say. You are sitting next to me in the teachers’ room, hair freshly straightened, eyes bright and eager. I don’t even know your name. You are going through your lesson plan slowly, seeing if there is more you can give, build, nourish. Never lose it, I want to call out. You’re nineteen now, but let your passion and care never wane — even when life gets so busy it leaves you gasping for breath. You are the lone girl, trudging to school, day in, day out. Hang in there, I want to tell you. Life doesn’t end with high school. I find you sitting next to me on Yom Kippur, wooden benches hard beneath us. I ran out of the house when my husband had a few minutes. Mincha, at least, in shul. But now that I am here, I am distracted, hungry. You also have a few small kids, but I see you focused, trembling, swaying... almost holy. So special, so connected, I want to whisper as I glance guiltily back into my machzor. I envy you. You are in the clothing store with your teenage daughter, lanky and awkward and peer-pressured. You are at PTA, withdrawn and worried about your sons’ behavior. We meet taking our sons to swimming lessons, see each other at weddings, bar mitzvahs, aufrufs. You are everywhere, and I have so much to tell you. But — I never could, never would. It’s socially off, and I have to behave if I want my kids to get married. So instead, I hope you’ll understand the thoughts unspoken: You inspire me, touch me, change me… more than you will ever know.

Ancient Boats Boats were one of the first modes of travel back in the day and have gone through many advancements throughout the centuries. One of the earliest boats that historians have recovered is the Pesse Canoe found in the Netherlands: a little canoe that was made by hollowing out a tree trunk. Other canoes were created in ancient Egypt by weaving together papyrus reeds. Ancient Indians used urus, or “fat boats,” when trade started becoming popular. These boats were bigger and more rounded, allowing them to carry large cargo. These boats are still being constructed today in South India — with no blueprints or design drawings throughout the process of construction! The entire design is in the mind of the craftsman, who instructs his workers daily until the boat comes together.
Innovation! Eventually, canoes weren’t sufficient, and larger ships were needed to effectively transport goods along waterways. Soon boat-builders began fashioning large rowboats that needed teams of oarsmen rowing on both sides. Seeking something more efficient than manpower, they also figured out how to improve the sails to carry larger boats as well as allowing the seamen to control the direction of the boat while harnessing the wind. In the meantime, across the globe, Native Americans were creating boats by building a wooden frame and covering it with animal skins, fur-side out. In the late 18th century, the steamboat was invented, which was a huge game-changer for sea travel. The first person to build a successful steamboat was American Robert Fulton. Steamboats work with an engine powered by the steam of burning coal, whose efficiency had a huge impact on the Industrial Revolution.
What’s the difference between a ship and a boat? A boat is a small- to mid-sized vessel with a much smaller cargo-carrying capability when compared to a ship. Ships are specifically made to carry large cargo or many passengers, while boats are used for recreational purposes like fishing, sailing or ferrying people.

Jews and the Titanic The mighty and “unsinkable” RMS Titanic met its untimely end when it hit an iceberg after leaving Europe on its maiden voyage in April of 1912. This steamboat had two steam engines powered by 29 boilers, as well as a steelplated hull. At that time, Jews were being persecuted across Europe, and many were looking for a way out. Many Yidden took the opportunity to book a berth on the Titanic, which would take them across the Atlantic to America. According to the ship’s lists, there were a few hundred Yidden on board, mostly in the thirdclass cabins reserved for poor immigrants. The actual number cannot be confirmed since many Yidden traveled under assumed names for safety purposes. There were some wealthy Jews on board in first class, as well, such as Isidor and Ida Strauss, the couple famed for being the owners of Macy’s, along with Benjamin Guggenheim, a well-known miner. Artifacts show that the Jews had their own kosher food and “Hebrew cook” on board the vessel. Presumably, like the Titanic’s sister ship, they also had labeled meat and dairy
dishes, though none have been salvaged from the Titanic itself. Of the hundreds of Yidden aboard the Titanic, only 27 are documented to have survived. The crash dealt a severe blow to the Jewish communities in Europe and America, as many families mourned the loss of loved ones. Chazzan Yossele Rosenblatt recorded Kel Malei Rachamim in dedication to the fallen of the Titanic. The recording raised $150,000, which he contributed to a fund for the families who lost loved ones on the Titanic.
The Mayflower Another historical ship was the HMCS Mayflower, which brought the Pilgrims over to America. Most of the passengers came from Holland, and they stopped in England where additional passengers boarded. The Mayflower had a sister ship, the Speedwell, which was set to cross the Atlantic together with the Mayflower. Shortly after departing England in August of 1620, the Speedwell sprang a leak and had to return to shore for repairs. They departed again, and about 200 miles from the tip of England the Speedwell sprang another leak and had to turn back once more. In the end, the Speedwell remained where she was, and twenty of her passengers boarded the Mayflower. The Mayflower finally set sail for America in September of 1620 with approximately 130 passengers and crew members aboard. After two long months at sea, on November 11, 1620, the Mayflower finally reached American shores. The Pilgrims built a settlement called Plymouth in what is now Massachusetts. Their first winter was harsh, and approximately half the passengers of the Mayflower died due to lack of food, shelter and supplies. After that first year, more settlers came over from Europe and settled in Plymouth, which eventually grew into a prosperous fishing and shipbuilding center.
