A “FRIEND” IN NEED

Thank you for an amazing magazine. We really enjoy reading it, all of it, every week. Especially interesting was the series on Chaverim. It’s incredible what they do for our community; we really are lucky to have such wonderful volunteers who are ready to do anything for a fellow Yid. I would like to share a personal story about a Chaverim member who helped us not just once or twice, but many times over. No one knew about it; there is no log written, because it was done on Shabbos when he wasn’t on call. Our father was not well. He couldn’t walk. It was very hard on him. He was stuck in bed all day, and needed help with everything. Going anywhere was nearly impossible, as he needed a wheelchairaccessible car and help to maneuver himself in and out of the wheelchair. We also live in a house with steps in the front, making it even more difficult to go anywhere. When we finally procured a ramp, our father looked forward to going out a bit; he hadn’t seen the outside for weeks. But we still needed someone to push him down the ramp. A man was needed, as it was very steep. Chaverim really helped out and sent members at all times of the night and day to help him up and down the steps.

Shabbos was a different story. It was winter: cold and snowy. Our father really wanted to go to shul for at least one tefillah. What to do? Step in Mr. M. Fisher, an amazing person from down the block. He lives close to the shul, but still went totally out of the way to come pick up our father every week to take him to shul. In the rain and snow, and the freezing cold, Mr. Fisher took him down the ramp and for the 10-minute walk to shul. It meant the world to our father to be able to go to shul and to get to see the outside world again. Mr. Fisher is a member of Chaverim and came countless times when we called the dispatcher for help up and down the stairs - or anything else we needed when our father was ill, and we are extremely grateful for that. It’s amazing how he took off time from his busy schedule to help us. Shabbos, though, there is no dispatcher; no one hears or knows about it. Yet, week after week, he showed up and helped us out so devotedly and kindly, brushing away our heartfelt thanks. It was such kindness, chesed at its best. Hashem should repay him hundred times over with everything he might ever need.

Upon reading your suggestions for mid-winter break, we took a day off to visit the Liberty Science Center. Going on a quiet weekday, versus Chol Hamoed, gave us the opportunity to explore all of the exhibitions. Our family spent a full day learning of Hashem’s wonders. Suggestion: It would be very beneficial to see a view of all listings of Simcha halls in and around Monsey. Stating the name, address, phone number and how many people they can accommodate. I’d like to point out to homeowners what shoveling the sidewalk near your home can mean to the community. As a mother, I find it absolutely terrifying to navigate my street while wheeling a stroller, grasping my toddler’s hand, or taking my child to the bus, as so many sidewalks are not accessible due to their unshoveled state. It would be such a chesed if each member of the community would shovel around their home in the proper manner, and make our town safe. I know people who ate non-GMO foods, which are basically organic foods, and they got sick at a pretty young age.

Those people will still get schar for their hishtadlus in guarding their health. Hashem is the ultimate predictor of whether you will be healthy or sick, but does that counteract the fact that he wants you to do your hishtadlus? You do your hishtadlus to the best of your abilities and let Hashem take care of the “outcomes.” Those are simply not your job.

What are GMOs (Genetically Modified Organisms)? Before we take an in-depth look at what GMOs (genetically modified organisms) are, I feel it’s important that we distinguish the hishtadlus that we must do, from the occuring results, which are totally up to Hashem. You either eat organic everything or nothing; you’re either stringent about some kind of diet, or you let loose completely. But there happens to be a happy medium that “will be very different for each person,” depending on many factors. You can find in many mussar seforim that for any long-term changes you want to make, like a specific middah, if you climb the ladder too quickly, you’ll eventually fall down! There is a reason the ladder has many steps. Only you – and I repeat, you – can make these small changes. However long that takes for you is irrelevant, as long as you keep making slow, steady progress. If you’re not a vegetable lover, I’m sure there’s a single veggie out there somewhere that you can tolerate and incorporate into your diet – and do this every day. This will mean a growth spurt for you, and your stepping up the ladder as well. When you feel comfortable with that, you should choose to make another proactive decision about your health. Maybe for you that means going to sleep at mid-

night instead of three o’clock in the morning! You get my point … I’m talking slow, steady, wellpaced changes – that is, unless you’re already suffering from an illness that calls for stricter measures. Don’t wait … take action now!

What are GMOs?

GMOs (Genetically Modified Organisms) are actually the result of a laboratory process where “genes” from the DNA of one species are extracted and artificially forced into the genes of an unrelated plant or animal. These foreign genes may come from bacteria, viruses, insects or animals. It is interesting to note that according to the halachos of kilayim, a yid is not allowed to mix species of various creations— which is what GMOs are. This reinforces the thought that Hashem created plants and animals to exist the way they are found naturally, and that plants and animals are not meant to be genetically toyed with!

No! Do not stress yourself out with anything! I am here to bring awareness and educate you about health and weight, but whatever changes you do decide to make, do it very slowly, without stressing yourself! Don’t empty your cabinets and fridge now. It took me years to change certain things, even though I had the knowledge. Change takes time. It requires work and effort. (But it is worth the while!) What that means for you is that countless studies are urging people to avoid GMO foods! The easiest way to avoid them is by refraining from eating corn and soy-based products. In addition, foods with the label USDA Certified Organic may not have anything genetically modified in them. You get the picture … it’s not an easy one, but you can start somewhere. Stay calm! Look out for next week’s article, “The Danger of GMOs.”

Bruchy* brought her twelveyear-old son Moishie* to the seamstress. She had bought a yarmulka for him that was too large, and she wanted to know if could be tailored to fit him. The seamstress agreed. As she was fitting Moishie’s yarmulka, Toby* entered the store. Toby was shocked by the scene and exclaimed, “Kopelech you also customize?!?” Perhaps Toby felt that today’s generation is too spoiled if people are bringing even such an ordinary item as a yarmulke to be custom tailored. What Toby did not know was that Moishie had recently undergone surgery on the brain tumor that would ultimately take his life, lo aleinu. The purpose of the customized yarmulke was to cover the scars on his head. We can only imagine the pain these words must have caused Bruchy. Back in Parshas Shemos, we discussed that it was not the degree of the b’nei Yisrael’s pain that triggered the redemption from Mitzrayim, but rather the cries of the people in response to that pain. The flip side of this concept is that Hashem does not only respond when we cry out to Him, but if another person cries out from pain we inflicted upon them, Hashem will respond against us with great anger. It says in this week’s

parsha, “Kol almanah v’yosom lo sa’anun… You shall not oppress any widow or orphan. If you cause him pain, if he shall cry out to Me, I shall surely hear his cry. My wrath shall blaze…” (Shemos 22:21-23) Rashi comments that this does not apply only

What is a subject of great pain and sensitivity to one person, might be only slightly hurtful to another. The Vilna Gaon explains that in matters that are bein adam l’makom, Hashem judges us by our intentions. If we did not intend to do wrong, Hashem can forgive us. However, Hashem cannot forgive us if we hurt another person. Regarding the above posuk, the Vilna Gaon brings down the Gemara (Bava Basra 16a) where R’ Levy says that Penina taunted Chana about her childlessness l’shem Shamayim, in order to cause Chana to cry out to Hashem for a yeshua. Penina intended that Chana should cry out for a good reason, but Hashem punished her severely in response to Chana’s cries. By the time Chana had borne four children, Penina had buried eight. Penina’s punishment did not depend upon her intentions, but upon the effects of her words. We are responsible for the pain we cause another person, even if someone else would have been less hurt by the same words or actions, and regardless of our intentions. Therefore, statements such as “She’s just oversensitive,” or “He must be

Toby could not have known about Moishie’s medical situation. But she must have known that she knew nothing about the true circumstances beyond what she saw with her eyes. She should not have spoken judgmentally about the situation without having the full picture. But then again— we never really have the full picture, do we? We never know what secret pains are hidden behind the smiles of the people around us. Keeping in mind the warning of this week’s parsha, let us take care to treat all people with kindness and sensitivity.

If I need something from a laundry basket full of various types of laundry, is there any manner in which I am allowed to take what I need without violating Borer?

If, by looking in the basket, one can see what one needs, then one may remove that particular item by placing the hand directly on it, even if other items are indirectly shuffled around. This Halacha applies only to items that one needs for immediate use. If one cannot see the item one needs, one may move around all the laundry until one sees what one needs and retrieve the necessary item. This Halacha also applies only to items needed for immediate use. It is not permitted to remove any items not required for immediate use.

A New Gown in Town

A new evening and bridal wear boutique in town. An interview with the designer HOW WERE YOU INTRODUCED TO THE FASHION INDUSTRY?

Ever since I knew how to hold a pen I used to draw evening gowns in the most beautiful colors and styles I could imagine. Fast forward a few years: I learned how to be more precise, track trends, pick colors, and graduated with an Art minor from the Fashion Institute of Technology in Manhattan. I even made my final project a collection of evening gowns. The quest to pursue my passion didn’t stop there, and I opened my own custom-made gowns company, the original La Pelcha brand. I’d tailor customized designs for customers, fitting their style and personality. To round out my portfolio even more I became an assistant designer at a popular clothing line in the Fashion District and then as a main designer for a children’s clothing manufacturer.

WHAT MADE YOU WANT TO OPEN YOUR OWN BOUTIQUE?

Although it was really fun to be a designer— I missed the fabulousness of evening gowns.

The “click” really happened when I decided to design my own wedding gown and my sisters’ dresses. They came out so beautiful that my love for eveningwear came right back to me. After a barrage of compliments, the urging of family and friends, and many hours of planning, my dream finally came true and Powder by La Pelcha became a reality.

WHAT IS THE MEANING AND INSPIRATION BEHIND THIS UNIQUE NAME?

There are two parts to the name. The first part, powder, is like a powder room. This is the feeling I wanted incorporated into the design of our boutique. With pink velvet couches, gold mirror tables, and a large fitting room, everything is designed so that our customers can feel at ease and personally taken care of. The second part, La Pelcha, is the brand I originally created - and it has a personal story behind it; my first recollection of fashion and what it means to me. Twirling in my new dress, not

more than 5 years old, I asked my grandmother if she thought the dress made me look beautiful. My grandmother replied: “For sure, but it’s not the dress, it’s la percha” – “Percha” meaning a hanger in Spanish. She was saying that her granddaughter was beautiful because of herself, and not because of what she was wearing. What I heard then, was “La Pelcha” and for me, this is the definition of beauty. As the quote goes: “What is important in the dress is the woman who is wearing it.” And this is what we aim to do: make each and every woman’s own inner “Pelcha” shine out by offering beautiful gowns designed with them in mind.

WHAT TYPE OF GOWNS DO YOU OFFER?

We carry wedding and evening gowns for the bride herself, as well as for her mother and sisters. We have long and short gowns and offer a wide selection of designs to appeal to all tastes and personalities. Our gowns are made by top designers in Spain, Canada, the US, and Eretz Yisroel, among others. Our bridal designers from Eretz Yisroel are part of the top 10 designers in the country. We chose them as we like to keep our business in the “family” and they, unlike other designers, have a greater understanding of tznius. All of the dresses we carry were made exclusively for us, meaning this tznius design does not exist anywhere else. Our designers do not “build up” their original designs; they create new tznius patterns exclusively for us. We also proudly carry our own line, La Pelcha.

DO YOU CARRY ACCESSORIES?

We carry a beautiful line of

high-end fashion jewelry with an expensive look and fine handcrafting with leather backing. They’re a must-see! We also have a full line of bridal accessories, such as belts, veils and hairpieces.

HOW DO YOU KEEP UP WITH THE FASHION TRENDS?

There are a few forecasting companies which are used by the biggest brands to predict colors, textures, materials, prints and other styles that will be in the stores for the upcoming seasons. They forecast fashion for haute couture, ready-to-wear and more. However, no matter how convenient – and mostly always right – this tool is, it is important for us to keep an eye out for what our market likes. We look everywhere for inspiration, because you never know, the forecast might tell you that plastic lace print is super trendy, but it could be too fashion forward and all our customer wants is real lace and tulle.

As a high-end boutique, we also try to keep a certain amount of timeless, classic and fashionable styles in our collection and not give in to fads too much. You wouldn’t want a Chanel suit to go out of style after three months, would you?

HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO HAVE A GOWN READY?

We carry sample sizes in our store. If the dress fits, you’re free to take it home. However, if you need a different size, it usually takes our designers 4 to 6 weeks for evening gowns and up to 3 months for wedding gowns to make. So plan ahead!

WHAT IS YOUR VISION FOR YOUR POWDER BOUTIQUE?

We would love to be the first place everyone goes to when they’re looking for a gown. We aim to offer a stress-free, easy and satisfying experience. We have a comfortable sitting area for our clients and their accompaniment, with refreshments available for a quick pick-

me-up. We are also considering adding collections, such as a teen line or a sheva brachos evening wear, based on the potential needs of our clients. We are hoping to grow with the community, providing the best quality of high-end fashion with top service.

CAN YOU OFFER OUR READERS SOME ADVICE ON SELECTING A GOWN?

Plan ahead! A gown usually takes 4 to 6 weeks to make. You don’t want to be running around looking for a gown a week before your simcha, and be forced to take whatever is on the rack. Secondly, fashion rules are meant to be broken. There’ll always be a new style coming out. Choose something you love, that complements you, and that you feel great in. Don’t forget, your attitude is 90% of the beauty of the gown. Remember the lesson the little girl got from her bubby: La Pelcha!

Building a Business From The Bottom Up - Part 2

In our last column, I explained the definition of a sole proprietorship as a sole owner of a company and its drawbacks because of legal liability. I further described the different benefits of a general partnership and its shortcomings in comparison to a corporation. Before we discuss corporations, I must mention another type of partnership that we did not discuss in our last column, which is a limited partnership. Limited Partnerships A limited partnership is different than a general partnership. A limited partnership is a business that has at least one general partner and one or more limited partners that are limited in their activities and authority. The general partner will usually be fully active and involved in the day-to-day activities in the partnership. The limited partner brings capital to the limited partnership, but is not involved in its day-to-day operations. As such, the limited partner’s personal liability is limited to the amount that he has contributed to the partnership. He also cannot incur debt on behalf of the partnership.

It is legally almost like a separate, artificial person— just with limited rights and privileges. During the Industrial Revolution, the corporation became a common way of conducting large businesses with centralized control that required access to capital by a potentially unlimited number of people. A corporation can do almost everything that a person can do, such as loan and borrow money, go into contracts, sue and get sued, buy inventory, hire employees, and of course, pay taxes. There are various benefits to incorporating a business. The primary motive of incorporation is that

C Corporations We will now explore the advantages and disadvantages of a corporation, the idea behind it, and how it is taxed. Once we will understand these concepts, we will come back

it essentially creates a wall between the owners and the corporation, and it protects the owner’s personal assets from the company’s liability. It is referred to as the “personal liability shield.” If the corporation goes bankrupt or faces a lawsuit, your personal assets such as your home or your car are protected and cannot be touched. The ability of carrying on business through a corporation greatly en-

We want his taxes, too.” hances the confidence in entrepreneurs, enabling them to take the risk inherent in building successful businesses— without having to worry about losing their personal assets. There are many more reasons for choosing a corporate structure. Incorporating a business assures the continuity of a business after the owners die. The going concern of a business due to withdrawal or death of a stockholder is lessened since the corporation is a separate legal entity apart from its owners. Furthermore, it enables small companies with limited capital to raise large funds through equity financing. (Equity financing is corporate financing through the issuance and selling shares of a company’s stock to the public.) As far as from a tax perspective, corporations benefit from tax advantages that are not available to solos. For example, corporations are allowed to fully deduct losses without proving a profit motive, i.e. that the loss was justified by the attempt to make a profit. Solos, on the other hand, are limited to claim only losses that are directly tied to for-profit activities. Losses that do not meet specific requirements or are sustained multiple years in a row will be considered by the IRS as a hobby instead of a business, and may be disallowed. It is also believed that corporations have a much lower chance of getting audited by the IRS than sole proprietorships. There are a number of downsides of incorporating. The biggest issue is “double taxation,” as you pay on both the corporate and the individual level. Secondly, as a corporation grows and its

stocks are available for sale, the original owners may lose direct and full control of the corporation. You should also consider the costs involved in incorporating, running, and dissolving a corporation. And last but not least, the government focuses more on corporations than on private businesses and regulates them more closely. How C Corporations are taxed

C corporations must file and pay federal and state taxes, just as individuals. The premise being that since the corporation is considered an “artificial person,” Uncle Sam comes and says, “Really? We want his taxes, too.” Now, when you come and take out your profits from that “separate and legal entity” (that is not you, remember?), it is now your turn to pay taxes on these same earnings. This is what we mentioned before with double taxation. In reality, there are ways for corporations to avoid pay-

ing much of the corporate income taxes. A big portion of corporate earnings are paid out to corporate officers and employees as salaries, wages, and bonuses. These are all considered business expenses and are fully deductible from taxable income. Dividends are paid out to shareholders only after all these expenses are paid, thus leaving little earnings in the corporation that are taxable. However, keep in mind that employee compensation must be done in the ordinary course of business and be reasonable in amount. The IRS may consider unusually excessive amounts unreasonable and tax it as dividends. In our next column, we will see how S corporations differ from C corporations with its many advantages. Chaim Elazar was already waiting in front of the yeshivah when Sara sped around the corner. The 16-year-old’s ears were shielded with earmuffs and his hands were stuck in the opposite sleeves. “Where are your gloves?” Sara asked even before his seatbelt clicked into place. “I’m sorry, I don’t know.” “You need new ones,” Sara said, a tad more agitated than she knew glove absence warranted. It was late, very late, already five minutes past their appointment time. If the dentist was running late, she’d be able to catch her breath or get irritated. If she was running late, however — and who was she kidding, they were still ten minutes away, without traffic. “We’re late,” she said, half apologetically, half miserably. Chaim Elazar nodded. The dentist was waiting out at his secretary’s desk by the time they blew into the carpeted, heated waiting room. “Here they are.” Dr. Hossami clapped his long fingers together. “Come on in.” Sara and Chaim Elazar followed the dentist with small steps. Chaim Elazar lay down in the dentist chair obediently under the glaring light. Sara sat in the extra chair, half wondering what her role was. When the children are small, holding their clammy, thin fingers is a noble act. But her oldest son had outgrown that, and at 16, could perhaps even visit the dentist by himself. Yet sitting there, being in the same space, even if she could do nothing to ease his pain — even if, and especially if she’d cut her work short to be here — was always valuable. Always. “He’s anemic,” Dr. Hossami said. “Look at his gums. Pale. ” He smeared on a topical anesthetic then injected Novocain into Chaim Elazar’s gums. “You can rinse,” Dr. Hossami said. “Then relax for five minutes until you feel your lips go numb.” The dentist turned to Sara. “I’ll be right back.” She nodded, and then looked at her son.

“Anemic? Are you eating okay in yeshivah?” But Chaim Elazar was spitting into the small sink at his side, and merely shrugged. The dentist came back with his assistant and took up his drill. Its high-pitched whine filled the room, and Sara and Chaim Elazar both closed their eyes. There were so many stories of problems these days. Boys not eating, not sleeping, losing their joie de vivre, getting too serious — or the opposite. Or worse. Sara always feared for her kids. Which mother didn’t? It was risky even letting them out of the house. It was dangerous to let them into the world, unless you counted on miracles, which Sara did. She knew she had to rely on siyata d’Shmaya. So far, it did not disappoint. Her children were wonderful, each of them, really. The big girls were heading to bed, the small ones had been tucked in, and Sara was finally going to sit down to that paperwork when she saw the card. On the back, in confident black, was written, “Missed you while you were out. Call me.” She called. Even before she could consider the possible intrusion into

her work hours, she fulfilled her curiosity. “Yes,” a confident voice stated. “I’m… returning your call. This is Sara Binet. You left your card?” “Oh.” He sounded genuinely happy. “I’m coming right over. I’ll see you in 15? And your husband should be there too.” She went to change from her snood into a sheitel. Shaking her head in the mirror, she sheepishly acknowledged to herself that, fueled solely by curiosity, she was inviting a perfect stranger into her house without any indication of what this was about. She tiptoed down to the basement, where a small portion was allotted as her husband’s study. “Elimelech,” she called softly. He raised his head from the sefer and looked up at her. “We’re having a guest,” she said. “I’m not sure who. He said he’ll be right over.” To be continued...

There are infinite ways to prepare the humble potato. I’m sure there are some of you that serve it alongside every dish, every night. Here are three variations to this dinner staple so you don’t feel like you’re serving the same old, same old…

EXPRESS DOUGHLESS KNISHES

This is a great shortcut recipe for potato knishes.

1 egg 2 potatoes, cooked and mashed well 1 small onion, diced and sautĂŠed

Â˝ cup flour 1 tablespoon margarine (1/8 of a stick) Salt and pepper

Beat egg and sesame seeds. Preheat oven to 350. Combine all ingredients in a bowl. Using a scoop, scoop potato mixture onto a cookie sheet and smear with egg and sesame seeds. Bake for 30 minutes or until knishes are golden brown.

GARLIC PARMESAN POTATO WEDGES

I find I am always looking for milchig sides to serve next to salmon. These potatoes are incredible. The dipping sauce is optional, but if you have the time it really brings it up a notch.

3 potatoes, unpeeled and cut into 12 wedges 4 tablespoons oil 2 teaspoons salt

2 teaspoons garlic 2 teaspoons oregano ½ cup grated parmesan cheese

Preheat the oven to 375. Layer the potatoes on a cookie sheet lined with parchment paper. Drizzle with oil, then sprinkle all the spices and cheese on the potatoes. Line up the potatoes in a single layer on the cookie sheet, skin side down. Bake for 30 to 35 minutes or until potatoes are browned. Serve with cheese dipping sauce. (recipe follows)

CHEESE DIPPING SAUCE 2 cups milk ½ stick butter

¼ cup flour 2 cups shredded cheese

Salt and pepper

Melt the butter in a medium saucepan. Add the milk and bring to just a boil. Add the flour and whisk until fully dissolved. Add the shredded cheese, salt and pepper, and mix until cheese is completely melted. Serve immediately alongside potatoes as a dipping sauce.

SWEET AND STICKY SWEET POTATOES

Sometimes we just need a change from the standard potato. This healthier option fits the bill perfectly.

4 sweet potatoes, peeled and cut into rounds 1 tablespoon cornstarch

1 tablespoon brown sugar 他 cup orange juice 2 tablespoons lemon juice

Preheat oven to 425. Place potato rounds in 9x13 pan. Combine cornstarch, brown sugar, orange juice and lemon juice. Mix well and pour over potatoes. Bake covered for 1 hour, and then uncover and bake for additional 30 minutes.

Most of the candidates packed their bags and headed straight to New Hampshire. tie. Hillary Clinton received 49.9% of the vote and 22 delegates, while Bernie Sanders got 49.6% and 21 delegates. The mere fact that Sanders was able to fight his way up to a tie was already a loss for Clinton, who in the recent past, led in all polls by huge margins. Sanders is now expected to win big in New Hampshireâ&#x20AC;&#x201D; and that kind of momentum can seriously hurt an opponent.

It is almost 26 years to the day since my husband and I moved to Monsey, just weeks before the birth of our second child. While I really do my best to bake my own challah as often as possible, we all have those weeks where there just aren’t enough hours in the day. As Daughter Number Two made her debut, life became even more hectic and visions of homemade challah became an impossible dream, at least for a while. Looking for a solution during those weeks where baking from scratch wasn’t an option, we turned

to our friends, long-time Monsey residents, and asked them for the best challah bakery in town. The answer we were given was a single word answer: Frank’s. Actually, it wasn’t quite a single word. We were instructed to go to Frank’s on Thursday nights, to choose our challahs from the large racks in the back of the bakery and to pop them into the freezer as soon as we got home. We did as we were told and were amazed to find that those beautiful challahs still had that fresh, out-of-theoven taste when they were retrieved from the freezer weeks, or even months later. to bake challahs that were so good and kept so well, and sell them at such reasonable prices? To be honest, even all these years later, I still have no idea. A family owned business for over 50 years, started by Mrs. Breindel Frank, the bakery first opened in 1965 in New Square, moving to Main Street in Monsey in the 1970s. While the sign out front read “Monsey Kosher Bake Shop,” that name was essentially ignored by locals who simply referred to the bakery as Frank’s. An integral part of the Monsey landscape, with its large white cardboard mockup of a wedding cake sitting in the display window

facing Main Street for as long as I can remember, the aroma that wafted out of the low brick building was impossible to resist. Although Frank’s heavenly challahs may have drawn customers by the hundreds before Shabbos, the bakery cases were continuously lined with tempting treats including chocolate glazed rainbow cake, row after row of gorgeous cookies and a seemingly never ending supply of creamy cakes. Their rye bread was legendary, with a crispy crust and an impossibly soft center, drawing hungry visitors like a magnet. “It was a very nice, warm place,” granddaughter Ruchy Ungar told The Monsey View.

frozen for months, they would emerge picture perfect once defrosted. Succos, when my whole family flocks to Monsey, was always a balancing act as we figured out exactly how many water challah eaters we had versus those who preferred egg challah. How many times did I find myself standing in a daze, staring at challahs, trying to figure out exactly how many of each kind I needed? I have no idea - but it was many, many times. The scene would repeat itself every time we went to visit my parents in the mountains over the summer, as my father would ask me to bring Frank’s challah with us, with my mother stocking her own freezer for the season so that she would have sufficient challah on hand no matter who came to visit. While I never knew any of the Franks personally, their challah has been a constant in my life for over a quarter of a century - and a popular Monsey landmark for double that amount of time. The closure of Frank’s bakery is a true loss

How did the Franks manage to bake challahs that were so good and kept so well, and sell them at such reasonable prices? “Everyone always wanted to come in and spend time there. The Monsey Trails bus used to stop right in front, and the bakery was what greeted people getting off the bus after a day of work.” Frank’s, Monsey’s first kosher bakery, dealt not just in groceries and baked goods, but also in mitzvos. “There were unfortunate people who would come in, and if they didn’t have money to pay, my grandmother would tell them to just take,” recalled Mrs. Ungar. “There was one woman who would sit there a whole day long, and my grandmother would always give her food.” Mrs. Ungar remembers the days before cash registers, when her grandmother would tally up bills on the side of brown paper bags. Mrs. Frank worked hand in hand with her sons Yehuda and Yaakov, who have been running the bakery since her passing several years ago. But health issues have made it impossible for the pair to continue operating the bakery, and with no other family members available to continue the business came word of the bakery’s closing. A sign on the bakery’s door bore the words, “We want to thank the community for patronizing our family bakery for the past 50+ years. Due to circumstances, we have no choice but to close our doors. We will miss your warm presence and we wish all our customers the best. The Frank Family.” Frank’s will be bought out in entirety by its next door neighbor, Jewelry by Esther. Mrs. Ungar said she had no idea what will happen to the store’s

machinery, which includes a cavernous mixer and an oven that can bake more than 500 loaves of challah simultaneously. Since word has gotten out, there has been an outpouring of both love and disappointment as loyal customers described their favorites: crispy sugar cookies, fragrant cinnamon buns, and outstanding Pesach cakes. That same sense of warmth is being extended to Yaakov Frank as Monsey residents are remembering Yaakov Yitzchak ben Breindel in their tefillos for a refuah sheleima. But for me, Frank’s was always about the challah. While I know that Frank’s did have a front door, like so many others who drove to the bakery, I never once used it. Instead, I parked in the rear lot and entered the bakery through the back, scavenging around for bags while inhaling the intoxi-

Regulars knew to make their way through the heart of the bakery to the storefront where they would pay for their orders at the register. Whenever we were faced with a large crowd, I would abandon my challah-making pursuits and ask my husband to make a pilgrimage to Frank’s. He’d come home with bags of golden brown goodness, and I would find myself trying to find ways to fit a dozen or more challahs into my already overstuffed freezer, knowing that even if those challahs stayed

So You Want to Get Over the Bridge How it was done in Old Monsey By: Shevy Hollander A mere seedling of the empire of Yiddishkeit that our town has become today, Monsey of the 1960s was a small, closeknit community. Lying over 30 miles north of Manhattan and even farther from the alte heim of Williamsburg and Boro Park, the Torah atmosphere of Monsey beckoned with the promise of a simpler life with ample yards, an abundance of fresh air and plenty of space for families to flourish. But despite the many benefits of small town life, there were basic amenities that could only be attained at that time by crossing the George Washington Bridge, that massive steel structure guarding the entrance to the other world, known both then and now to Monseyites as “The City.” Things then weren’t all that different than they are today. There were simchos to attend and a never-ending stream of errands that could only be run on the other side of the Hudson River. But in those days, not only were there far fewer Monsey residents and, there-

fore, fewer rides to the city, but there was also no Monsey Trails bus providing faithful service to commuters day after day in all kinds of weather. How then did Monsey residents manage the geographical distance? The Monsey View spoke to a few old-time Monsey residents, who have lived here over half a decade. “It scares me now to think of my children using the public transportation we used back then,” one said.“We’d catch the Red and Tan Lines at the Spring

Brooklyn, this option was available around the clock.” She recalled how, as a teen, she would take the Red and Tan bus from Brooklyn at all hours of the night. “I remember on a few occasions coming home at two in the morning from a friend’s wedding in Williamsburg and waking my father to come fetch me and two friends from Spring Valley, although in hindsight, I doubt I woke him. There’s no way he could have been asleep while we were on the train past midnight. Cell phones were not in existence, and there was no way we could be reached.” There was also a bus - a school bus painted in blue - that left New Square each morning, and picked up travelers in Monsey at 7:00 am. If it was running late, chances were that it was waiting for a traveler to be ready or a mechanical issue was being fixed by the able travelers. It was probably the first traveling minyan with a Sefer Torah, and the men would daven Shachris there each morning on their way to work. “In fact, my husband gave tikkun on that very bus when my oldest daughter was born,” one Old-Monsey resident shared. While public transportation was available, Monsey residents were well-known baalei chesed

The fact that he returned to the city in the afternoon was a great advantage when it came to attending city simchos. Somehow, there was always room for any passenger in need of a ride. “We would wait for him with crates and plastic chairs, making ourselves comfortable on them in the truck for the ride to Brooklyn,” they reminisced. Phyllis Terrace boasted four residents who would commute daily to the city, and their schedules were well known to all. Reb Shmiel Hersh Braunstein, Reb Shlomo Neiman, Reb Yosel Steinmentz, and Reb Chaim Shmiel Stauber, who left at 6 AM sharp, could all be called upon for a lift to the city. Those who needed to catch a ride home from Brooklyn to Monsey knew they could visit Mr. Stauber’s jacket factory in Williamsburg, where they could await a ride back home to suburbia. The chesed gene apparently ran in the Braunstein family and son-in-law Mr. Chaim Simkowitz would leave Monsey after davening, taking countless passengers and packages in his car with infinite patience. Those packages would grace his dining room table all week long, ready to picked up. Chashuvah Monsey rabbeim who also taught in Breuer’s were happy to take passengers

In Monsey, they do hachnosis orchim with their cars. Because Monsey was truly a small town where everyone stayed in close touch, people would work their own appointments and trips around their neighbors’ schedules so that they could hopefully catch a ride to their destination. So many residents depended on these rides, and it rarely happened that these kindhearted drivers took to the road alone. Several Monsey residents were well known for their tremendous kindness when it came to matters of transportation. Rabbi Zorich Schapiro, an illustrious talmid chochom, was the unofficial (pre-) Monsey Trails bus. Everyone knew just when to catch a ride with him, and he would even go as far as picking up passengers on his way into the city or home. His children shared that one time he arrived to Monsey after a long day, only to remember that he had told someone that he would pick him up from the bridge. He promptly made an about face and went to bring the fellow whom he did not know - home, without being sure if he is still waiting there for him. Another such individual was Rabbi Kirshenbaum, who made the trip into the city three times a week. Everyone knew his schedule, and he never drove in without taking passengers along for the ride. Every interviewee we spoke to remembered Mr. Perlowitz’s famous truck. Mr. Perlowitz, a Brooklyn resident who worked as a menakir in Shimon Mend-

While the creation of the Monsey Trails bus line may have made the commute in and out of our beloved town infinitely less complicated, the chesed that was part of the foundation of Monsey in the early years still lives on. Offering rides is part of what we do and anyone who has ever been the recipient of one has had the opportunity to appreciate the graciousness and goodness that continues to permeate Monsey, making it the wonderfully special community that it is today.

TAXI TALK I broke down in the parking lot yesterday. Rather, my car wouldn’t start, and I was the one who broke down. In my defense, it had been a long day, coming on the heels of a long and complicated week. So I was not in the best frame of mind when I inserted my key in the ignition and the engine gave an ominous rumble and then ground to shuddering halt. After a few more tries with the same reaction, I called Chaverim. It was a hot day outside, and getting hotter. Alone in the car, I didn’t have to worry about the children overheating at least. My shopping spree had been at the seforim store, and I believed the laminated children’s books could withstand up to 200-degree heat. The only item in the car that was perishable was me. But boruch Hashem, Chaverim responded quickly and diagnosed my car with a fuel pump problem. Since the fuel was not catching on, the engine would not start. I am not mechanically inclined, so I called my husband for guidance. “You need to call AAA and get it towed to the mechanic,” he said.

I removed my shopping bags, my purse, my laptop, and any valuables which I was toting around in my car, and went to get a car service. There was a line of cabs in front of the shopping center, and I hopped into one. I had to dig around my purse for the last of my quarters in order to pay for the ride, but I got home in one piece. My car would require a tow truck, a trip to the mechanic and a three-day wait for just the right part. It wasn’t until the next day that I realized my laptop was missing. My laptop represents my entire work life: my business writing, marketing concepts, creative features and fiction stories, plus bits and pieces of ideas are floating in my memory drive. Without my computer, I was doomed. “There’s no way you’ll get it back,” everyone said. “You may as well give up,” they all counseled. Friends, neighbors, and spouse were telling me to resign myself to my fate and start shopping for a new model. But I had to try. So I gave tzedakah, said a short tefilah and took my husband’s car back to the shopping center, and to the line of cars. There were sleek yellow cabs, some dusty grey minivans, and some battered black sedans. I scanned the car doors, trying to remember the name of the cab company…. Was it American Latina Car Service, Pyramid Taxi, or Star One

The only item in the car that was perishable was me. Due to the heat, exhaustion, or plain old contrariness, I just could not bring myself to make the call, then wait interminably for the tow truck, followed by sitting around for hours on end in a smoke-filled waiting room, inhaling gasoline fumes— only to be told that my car needed a part that would not be available until next week. So I promptly burst into tears and insisted that I couldn’t, just

Taxi? Star One Taxi sounded the most familiar, and the car which bore that name seemed to be the most battered of the lot, reflecting the general disrepair of the car that had driven me yesterday. I flagged down the driver. “Where you going?” he asked. “To my laptop,” I said. “I hope.”

He raised his eyebrows at me, “Why you so surprised?” he asked. I told him that I had taken a Star One Taxi cab on the previous day and had left my laptop computer in it. Is there any way he could track it down? I described the driver as a black man, bald, wearing a light pastel shirt. He drove with the windows down, had a broken right rearview mirror and he collected his change in an empty Pringles can. The driver said, “You speak Unit 39. He speak best English. You call Unit 39.” I dialed the number for the cab company and spoke to Unit 39. He told me I needed to talk to Unit 14. I called Unit 14, who said, “Yes, I have laptop. I give boss. You call Unit 2.” Hardly daring to hope, I dialed the cab company for a third time and asked to speak to Unit 2. “I have your computer,” Unit 2 said. The Haitian lilt in his voice was music to my ears. “You come by the office and pick up.” I drove down to the office and met with Unit 2, a middleaged man with a sweet smile. When he handed me back my computer it was all I could do not to clasp it to my chest in joy and thanksgiving. I cried out, “Boruch Hashem!” And then to the driver, “Thank you! Thank

you so much!” He raised his eyebrows at me, “Why you so surprised?” he asked. I took a step back. I had offended this man’s sense of propriety, of right and wrong. My enthusiasm over finding my laptop had insulted him. In the driver’s mind, there was no question that he would return a lost object. I took a deep breath, so that I could speak with calm dignity. “You’re right,” I said, “I should have known you would return it. Thank you very much.” I was struck by Unit 2’s sense of pride and accomplishment. The concern for his company’s reputation and for his integrity was evident on his face. I’m not the head of a taxi company, with a fleet of driv-

ers. But I have my own fleet under me, who I am trying to train in proper middos. Shouldn’t we have the same sense of pride in our proper behavior? The same sense of obligation to duty and to honesty? Basic middos and menchlichkeit. Basic honesty and integrity. The next time we participate in an act of kiddush Hashem, in returning lost objects, in holding open the door for another shopper, in giving another driver the right of way— shouldn’t these be understood as a given principle? I’ll try to keep this in mind for the future. I’ll try to remember that exemplary behavior

should simply be a given, that as representatives of the Torah, it should be obvious that we do the right thing. And I’ll backup my laptop before I leave the house. But I’ll always take Star One Taxis from now on— just in case. *Name has been changed

TRANSPORTATION TO ETERNITY I’m lucky I wasn’t surrounded by anybody that I actually minded seeing tears running down my cheeks— then again, that was probably the whole problem to begin with. You see, last Thursday found me standing in the middle of Westchester at a large medical complex surrounded by people who couldn’t care less about a yiddishe mama and her baby. I was hungry, exhausted, feeling under the weather — and it didn’t help that I couldn’t find a heimishe face anywhere. When I had first planned my trip to the Westchester specialist, I decided —Super Special Person that I am—to be a “big girl,” and not bother my husband by asking him to drive me, thereby interrupting his work schedule. (After eight years, it was the first time that I attempted “big girl-ness,” by the way.) So I called a local chesed organization and booked a ride. Squishing into the back seat of the minivan with a carseat and various paraphernalia only minutes after the last kid had boarded the bus was just part of the excitement. Soon my standard motion sickness kicked in, and I spend the rest of the ride

The other two ladies in the van seemed to be doing okay, and the driver seemed genuinely happy to be doing this tremendous chesed. It was only I who had a miserable ride. Shakily, I climbed out of the

van and walked into the complex, feeling as if a feather could knock me over. It took about two hours to come to myself, but the timing was perfect,

Placing a call to the chesed organization, I was greeted by a pleasant voice that regretfully informed me that no volunteer was near to Westchester, but that they’d call me as soon as someone was available. “We’ll get you home,” the secretary promised. My head was spinning, and assuming it would be a long wait, I set out to look for a bikur cholim room to find some form of lunch. After searching for a few minutes, I decided to call Bikur Cholim of Rockland directly, and was told that the medical branch I was in had no bikur cholim room, but I could get to the main hospital, where

said rather bluntly that babies are not allowed on board. Dejectedly, I walked back inside and promptly burst into tears. The strangers near me just walked on… Eventually, hunger won out, and I paid $10 for a taxi to take me to the main hospital branch. In the “chaplan” room, I oh-sogratefully sank into a chair and ate a hearty meal. I don’t think I’ve ever appreciated a cup of soup and tuna sandwich like I did on that day! Slowly, my muscles stopped trembling with car sickness and exhaustion, and I began to relax. I’d been in Westchester for a nerve-racking four hours and still hadn’t a way to get home, but once I was able to relax in the bikur cholim room, all of the stressful feelings of aloneness evaporated. I was fed, had a warm room to sit in (fully stocked with reading material!), and there, posted on the wall was information about a bikur cholim return shuttle—one that I suspected would not turn away my little

All of a sudden I felt all warm and fuzzy, knowing that no matter what, the Yiddishe community would take care of their people. Shortly after reading the shuttle notice, my phone rang, the chesed organization calling, saying that two volunteers were available to come pick me and baby up, one of which was my own husband. (Of course I chose him!) I packed up my things and dropped a nice donation into the bikur cholim pushka,

helping in a small way to continue the chesed I had received, all the while marveling at the beauty of klal yisroel. From the chesed drivers who volunteer to drive perfect strangers to their appointments, to the Bikur Cholim of Rockland that provides food, transportation, and so much more, to my husband who gave up his work to help a stranded person (he would have done it for anyone, not just me!), I was astounded at the extent that our community goes to, to do chesed with their cars. I also gained a deep appreciation for the members of our community who, because of minhag, rely

only others to drive them. It’s not an easy thing at all. At the end of the day, those miles—both traveled or driven— are so much more than just numbers on an odometer; mitzvah miles are part of the trip to Eternity, a forever accounting of the way we’ve helped our fellow Jew.

A miracle unfolded Monday night, when a fire broke out in Rockland Kosher’s side parking lot, burning a storage building and a delivery truck. 3:00 am: a time when most people are wrapped in a cocoon of downy blankets, oblivious to the passage of time. The Mermelstein* family had been that way, too, until the noises had begun… The thumping and scratching sounds coming from the children’s closet awakened the family members one by one, and they stood there in the middle of the night — staring at the closed door, wondering what was trapped inside. Nobody had the courage to open the door, so they called Chaverim to investigate. The member courageously prepared to face the wild animal inside. Was it a squirrel, a skunk, a cat— or maybe even a small bear? Surprisingly, the animal that fell into his hands was none other than a little puppy, powered by battery, no less! Sometimes, the calls that Chaverim members are involved in have a comical ending, which leaves everyone in a great mood. What’s never funny, however, is the fear one feels when a four-legged intruder has

entered one’s home. “A woman might run out of the house to escape from a squirrel and wait four or five hours for her husband to come home. If we have the ability to calm her down —why shouldn’t

All it takes is one hearty volunteer to relieve you of your furry nemesis. Really, that’s what Chaverim is all about — being there for both the little and big things. Interesting calls come into Chaverim on a daily basis, and most of the time, Chaverim is able to help. While going through the previous year’s records with a Chaverim coordinator, I tried hard not to giggle when I heard that somebody had called Chaverim because her carrot had fallen into a sewage drain, and she wanted Chaverim to retrieve it… then I was fascinated to learn that Chaverim responded to two separate calls for unlucky men who had painfully entangled their beard and peyos in power tools, and was amazed that Chaverim members had actually gone down to Good Sam to relieve a hospitalized patient of his uncomfortable head of bushy hair... As one member tells me, “Chaverim is called “Chaverim” for a reason; you should feel that we’re your best friend and have no qualms to call us for anything, even in the middle of the night. We are ready to drop everything to help resolve your issue.” Now in the winter time, a common issue is burst pipes. Often, people call in that their pipes have burst and water is gushing everywhere. “Such a call goes out as an emergency, because we could save a family thousands of dollars in damage,” a coordinator tells me, his tone serious. “The house could get flooded in minutes. There could be water damage and mold. Not only do we

turn off the water, but we also make sure to suction out the water before we leave to prevent additional damage to the house.” Similarly, Chaverim members will respond to calls for burst boilers and heat that isn’t working. In the cold weather, heat and hot water are vital, and if they can’t fix it, a member will set up plug-in radiators for a family to use until a professional is able to solve the issue. Emergency home maintenance, freeing people from entrapment...Chaverim does it all. They have fielded plenty calls about children hopelessly, dangerously entangled in seatbelts, or with feet stuck in crib slats or bike chains, and even a boy wedged deeply within a tree. There are also frequent calls about handicapped patients stuck in a transportation van after the lift breaks. Luckily, Chaverim has the tools, training, and most importantly — the desire — to extricate people from unpleasant situations. It’s shocking to hear the full scope of what Chaverim mem-

bers are ready to do to help a Yid in need. If a service can relieve a person’s or family’s stress, most likely Chaverim will perform that service. She’d waited for this day for months, years actually. Even as a young girl she’d dreamed about the day she’d wear a white gown and walk down to the chuppah to begin her life as a married woman. Finally, it was here, her big day. Solemnly, she spent the day in tefillah, beseeching the Bashefer for a smooth beginning to a productive life. Arriving at the hall, however, the beginning was anything but smooth! As the kallah walked into the wedding hall with her parents, they were met by pitch black. The lights had inexplicably gone out. Panic ensued as parents and soon-to-be in-laws ran to and fro; the management frantically checking breakers and fuses to no avail. Within moments, the source of the blackout was found: a car had crashed into a pole which provided the wedding hall with power. It would be hours before it was fixed. The kallah closed her eyes and voiced a silent supplication that there should be light at her wedding and in her life. Her prayers were answered. A steady stream of Chaverim members headed towards the hall with any lighting gear they had in their possession. By the time the last member had set up his light, the hall was as a bright as day. Many members stayed for the dancing, bentching the chasan and kallah a lechtige future. Isn’t it amazing what light can do? What a difference Chaverim

can make? During hurricane Sandy a large percentage of Monsey and New Square residents learned to appreciate what electricity means. In my own house, we found the lack of heat and light to be especially difficult. When the hurricane hit, our newest addition was but two days old, and it was overwhelming to take care of a newborn by candlelight. We packed our bags and headed in to unaffected family members in Brooklyn. Unfortunately, not everyone had that option. Outside the winds were howling, the leaves were flying, and branches crashed to the earth with deafening force. Inside, families huddled together for warmth, crowding around candles for a little light in a dark home. Some were able to pull through, but for others, the situation was precarious. The emergency blare went out across the radio wave, and each

Blank card or cardstock Quilling tool Quilling paper (3mm wide) Glue Scissors Corkboard and stickpins (optional)

Let the younger kids join the fun by letting them cut wider strips from construction paper and quill around a skewer!

To make the card, cut the cardstock into a 6 ½”-by-9”-rectangle and fold in half. Cut out a 2 ½”-by -3 ½”-window at the right side of the top flap.

Quilled Birthday Card:

HOW TO QUILL • Insert one end of the paper strip into the quilling tool. • Start turning the tool so that the paper starts winding tightly around it. • When you are at the end of the strip, loosen the coil slightly, and remove the tool. • Put a dab of glue at the end of the paper to seal the coil, and press down lightly.

• Use one full strip to make an eccentric circle or a regular closed coil. • Use a ¼ strip triangle for the knot. • Use an 1/8 strip for the string. • Use two ¼ strip triangles for the bow on the string.

• Use two ½ strip teardrops.

TRIANGLE: Form the coil

into a triangle using three fingers, then pinch out one corner, and flatten the other side.

CUPCAKE: • Use three full strip triangles for the base. • Use four ½ strip teardrops for the frosting. • Use a ¼ strip peg for the cherry, and leave an end open for the stem. • Glue together all the pieces, as shown in the photo. • You can arrange all the pieces on the cork board, glue it down, and hold it together with stick pins to keep the shape until it dries.

PEG: Glue down the end of the

paper while it’s still wrapped tightly around the quilling tool.

Arrange all the quilled pieces on the card and glue them down. Use Foamies Stickers or gel pens to write your message.

HAPPY QUILLING!

In Rockland County, closing costs are very high. They can be between 5%-7% of purchase price. It’s no wonder so many people cannot put 20% down! There are all different options on how to finance a purchase of a home with less than 20% down. Prior to the meltdown in 2007-2008-2009, it was common for people to take out two mortgages at closing. By taking two loans, known as “Piggyback” mortgage, you can put less than 20% down, not pay PMI (Private mortgage insurance) and also have all the interest you pay deductible, which is a tax advantage and also have a lower payment. These loans are now back. Here are two real time examples why a Piggyback loan may be the right loan for you: A. Yoel and Chani were selling their home and purchasing a new home. Their buyers wanted to close in 4 months, but the seller of the home they were purchasing wanted to close within 30 days. Yoel and Chani were able to purchase the house from an income standpoint while not yet selling their current home, but their mortgage would be a lot higher than they wanted because they wouldn’t have the proceeds of their sale. They structured their loan as a “piggyback.” Their first mortgage was the amount that
