THE DIFFERENT TYPES OF FEAR

(Re: Keep the Message Loving, Issue 365) I’d like to add a few thoughts to the ongoing discussion about yiras Hashem and the fear of doing an aveirah.

Fearing Hashem (yiras ha’onesh) is one of the fundamental mitzvos of the Torah.

It does not contradict ahavas Hashem, the mitzvah to love Hashem. Fear makes one vigilant toward their deeds when they are in control of their free will. We are given tremendous opportunities to use our talents and fulfill our potential in life. But making the right decisions is in our hands, and the aspect of fear leads us to perform mitzvos properly.

A second grader should fear doing an aveirah. The fear should not evoke nightmares, but should give her pause before she commits an action. My generation was raised on fear; fear of disappointing or disobeying Hashem, parents, teachers, rebbeim, etc. Today’s generation is being raised on incentives and positive feedback: If I daven nicely, I will get a sticker. If I answer amen in shul, the candy man will give me a treat. What happens when no one notices if you daven (and no reward is forthcoming)? When you reach bar mitzvah age and there’s no longer any candy for answering amen to Kaddish? Will you continue to daven or answer amen by rote? By habit? By peer pressure? Certainly not by fear.

The two mitzvos of love and fear are connected. We are commanded to love Hashem with all our hearts, and to fear Him. It is that combination of love and fear that ensures the observance of Hashem’s commandments. Doing a mitzvah entitles one to receive a reward, but that should not be the primary motivation. Standing in awe and trepidation before Hashem (yiras haRomamos) is the highest level of yiras Hashem. Being mindful that you are standing in front of the most powerful Ruler of the universe is a constant, powerful mitzvah that requires only thought.

GREAT SCHOOL TREATS

(Re: Copycat Cookies, Issue 364) I am writing to let you know that the bakery-style cookies you featured in your back-to-school issue was a much-welcomed feature. The soft bite cookies were a hit with my kids, and I’m still planning to try the other two recipes. (I skipped the nuts due to my kids’ school policy, and it was absolutely delicious like that, too.)

I just want to put it out there that I witnessed blatant neglect happening over Rosh Hashanah in the playground by a nanny. If your children are under a nanny’s care, there must be accountability. Follow up and ask how your child is doing, what they did, ate or played with. It’s not the first time I’ve seen precious children being mistreated.

Parents, if you must have a nanny, make sure they are doing what they are paid to do, and that it isn’t your child who is being constantly yelled at, yanked or completely ignored. Demand accountability, and ensure that the people you hire take care of your children in a responsible, kind and caring manner.

ukkos is Zman Simchaseinu. We enter the sukkah full of simcha as we are taken under the wings of the Shechinah. And yet, just a few days earlier, we were far from Hashem and in need of teshuvah. Could it really be that our teshuvah was so quickly accepted that we can go from being far from Hashem to being so very close to Him in such a short time?

It says in the Torah, “And you shall take for yourselves on the first day the fruit of the hadar tree, branches of date palm trees, a branch of a braided tree, and willow of the brook, and you shall rejoice before Hashem your G-d for a seven-day period… For a seven-day period you shall dwell in sukkahs… In order that your generations should know that I had the Bnei Yisroel live in sukkahs when I took them out of the land of Mitzrayim” (Vayikra 23:40–43).

The Midrash says that the four minim can represent four types of Yidden. The “fruit of the hadar tree,” the esrog, has both taste and fragrance, and represents those in Klal Yisroel who have both Torah and mitzvos (the tzaddikim). Next is “the branches of the date palm.” The date has taste,

The “branch of a braided tree” is the myrtle, which has fragrance but no taste.

This represents those who have mitzvos, but not Torah. Finally, the “willow of the brook” has no fragrance and no taste. It represents those devoid of both mitzvos and Torah.

The Ksav Sofer cites this Midrash to explain how it is that we go so quickly from being far from Hashem to rejoicing under the wings of the Shechinah. The above pesukim reveal that it can indeed happen that quickly. There are three main ideas in the above pesukim: (1) Taking the arba minim (U’lekachtem lachem…); (2) Rejoicing before Hashem (…u’semachtem lifnei Hashem…); and (3) Dwelling in the sukkah (Ba’sukkos teishvu…).

The Ksav Sofer explains that the mitzvos of taking the arba minim and dwelling in the sukkah are related. In one hand we hold the esrog, which represents the tzaddik, and in the other hand we hold the remaining 252

three minim, which represent every other type of Yid. Before Yom Kippur and in the Aseres Yemei Teshuvah, these four categories would not be in the same place, as one is close to Hashem and the others, to varying degrees, are far. After Yom Kippur, however, these three categories of Yidden become baalei teshuvah, and we know that teshuvah is so powerful that “in the place where the baal teshuvah stands, even a tzaddik cannot stand” (Brachos 34b). And indeed, the three minim corresponding to these three types of Yidden are held in the right hand, illustrating this point.

Next, it says, we are to rejoice before Hashem. After doing teshuvah and coming close to Hashem, we can all rejoice before Hashem. Finally, we are commanded to dwell in a sukkah for seven days. This mitzvah is given to kal ha’ezrach b’Yisroel — all residents among Bnei Yisroel.

Every single Yid is zoche to be in the sukkah and under the wings of the Shechinah. It is hard to fathom how quickly teshuvah is accepted.

The Ksav Sofer explains that by commanding us to dwell in sukkahs, we are reminded of how we went from the 49th level of tumah in Mitzrayim to dwelling within the ananei hakavod. If people can go from the 49th level of tumah to dwelling within the ananei hakavod, then surely we can understand that indeed a person can go from a lowly place to dwelling within the sukkah.

The Ksav Sofer concludes that this is why the main name of the chag is Sukkos, after the mitzvah of dwelling in sukkahs; by way of this mitzvah, we can believe that we will all rejoice before Hashem with the arba minim, with the three types of Yidden not only included in this mitzvah, but held in the right hand.

Through this mitzvah we can see that every one of us, once we do teshuvah, can truly rejoice before Hashem.

Indeed, Sukkos is known as Zman Simchaseinu. After moving from Elul through Rosh Hashanah, the Aseres Yemei Teshuvah and Yom Kippur, we have done teshuvah.

Through teshuvah, we have come closer to Hashem — and what greater source of simcha can there be?

Federal Court Upholds Chestnut Ridge House of Worship Law A federal judge ruled in favor of religious rights in Chestnut Ridge, dismissing a lawsuit brought by a neighborhood group that hoped to overturn the village’s House of Worship law as unconstitutional.

Rockland Daily reported that Citizens United to Protect Our Neighborhoods, also known as CUPON, filed the lawsuit along with three village residents in April 2019, saying that the House of Worship law benefitted only Orthodox Jewish villagers. Judge Nelson Roman of the Federal Southern District of New York granted the village’s motion to dismiss the lawsuit, his twenty-page brief finding that the petitioners did not have standing to challenge the law.

“The village board is pleased with the federal court’s thorough review of its actions and the decision to dismiss the case,” said Chestnut Ridge Mayor Rosario “Sam” Presti. “The village will continue to act in the best interest of all of its residents, no matter how difficult the case.”

Chestnut Ridge’s Jewish community fought a long battle to pave the way for shuls to be built, challenging a village law that required a five-acre minimum for houses of worship, as reported by The Journal News. The House of Worship law was enacted in 2019 to accommodate the religious needs of the village’s growing Jewish population, creating a three-tiered sys-

tem that would have different requirements for congregations of different sizes, all of which require village approvals.

“The practice of one’s religion is a constitutional right,” Presti said at the time. “The village recognized that its laws needed to continue to reflect the preservation of that right and to ensure legal compliance in that regard.”

Chestnut Ridge trustees Chaim Rose and Shmuli Fromovitz said that three shuls have been approved by the village since the law was enacted.

“The village anticipates the submission of additional House of Worship applications in the years to come,” said Rose and Fromovitz. “Chestnut Ridge is a growing and vibrant community with leadership that truly goes above and beyond for its residents.”

Biden Declares War on Hidden Airline Fees Monsey residents who often take to the skies may soon find the process more transparent, with President Joe Biden announcing plans to prevent airlines and travel sites from tacking on hidden fees, which can often significantly impact fares.

Yahoo Finance reported that Biden’s plans are part of a recent effort by Transportation Department Secretary Pete Buttigieg to eliminate at least some of the hassles of flying, which have grown considerably since the onset of the pandemic. While Biden’s proposed rule will not solve the ongoing staffing shortages and continuous flight cancellations that have plagued the industry as of late, it would prevent costly add-ons by requiring airlines to post additional charges alongside their fares. Such items would include additional fees for baggage, family seating, and flight cancellations and changes.

Buttigieg said that the new rules would help travelers make educated decisions, while also providing significant savings.

“Airline passengers deserve to know the full, true cost of their flights before they buy a ticket,” said Buttigieg.

The rule is in the process of a 60-day review and public comment period, and affects all flights within the United States as well as those that take off or land within the country.

Another new rule being proposed by the Transportation Department addresses the refund process that occurs when flights are canceled, with enforcement actions being pursued against ten airlines with a track record of significant refund delays.

“They cancel on you, and you have to pay a fee to rebook,” said Biden adding, “It’s simply not fair.”

Tefillos Mix With Air Raid Sirens as Thousands Spend Rosh Hashanah in Uman Thousands traveled to Uman for Rosh Hashanah, making the trek by train, bus, car and foot from neighboring countries into Ukraine, whose airports remain closed because of the ongoing military conflict.

Haaretz reporter Sam Sokol made the thirteen-hour trip from the Krakow airport to Uman by car, though others he met over Rosh Hashanah said that road and border delays had their journeys from Eastern Poland taking twice as long. Sokol found that visitors to Uman were only being let into the country’s main entrance after paying a $35 visitor tax to police officers carrying Kalashnikov rifles.

Air raid sirens sounded more than once over Rosh Hashanah, and The Jerusalem Post reported that the Ukrainian military shot down more than ten Iranian suicide drones launched by Russia that were aimed at Uman. According to one Ukrainian official, the drone deal between Iran and Russia stipulated that Russia would wage acts of terrorism targeting Israeli citizens, many of whom flocked to Uman for Rosh Hashanah.

In an interview with Yeshiva World News, one visitor to Uman who asked to be identified only as M.M. said that Ukrainian citizens were happy to see the influx of Rosh Hashanah visitors, providing them with a sense of normalcy during the ongoing conflict, while also demonstrating their deep ties to Uman.

“The Ukrainians saw that we come each year because of our deep connection to Rabbi Nachman, not to take a vacation or party,” said M.M. After traveling 34 hours to get to Uman, M.M. said that the only evidence of war he saw were NATO troops stationed in Poland. He likened concerns about safety in Uman to being in New York and worrying about a conflict taking place in Detroit, and noted that no effort is too large for Breslover chas-

sidim intent on getting to Ukraine.

“If the streets of Uman were filled with knives, we would walk on those streets to be with Rabbi Nachman on Rosh Hashanah,” said M.M. “If you were never here for Rosh Hashana, you wouldn’t understand it. But if you were, you’d do the same.”

Four Local Companies Ranked Among Inc. Magazine’s Top 5,000 Fastest Growers Four local businesses have made it onto Inc. Magazine’s prestigious list of America’s 5,000 fastest-growing private companies, which highlights the most successful independent small businesses in the country.

Rockland Business Journal reported that the list includes companies based in the United States that had a minimum of $100,000 revenue in 2018 and a minimum of $2 million by the end of 2021. Businesses must have been founded and generating revenue by March 2018 to qualify and cannot be subsidiaries of other companies.

Spring Valley’s ItCon, which provides informational technology support and services, grabbed the 1,656th place on the list, with a threeyear revenue growth of 376%. It had previously placed at 723 on last year’s list.

Suffern-based The Everest Equity Company, a commercial and residential mortgage broker, placed 2,522 on the list, with a 228% revenue growth over the past three years. This year marks the sixth time that the company has appeared on the Inc. list and the first time it has ranked higher than 4,003, a slot it earned in 2014.

Also appearing on the Inc. list were Funding Source Corp of Chestnut Ridge, which came in at number 3,870 with 128% growth since 2018, and Advanced Flooring of Valley Cottage, which placed 3,795th with 132% growth over the past three years.

CHAPTER 30 RECAP: Lenny is feeling sorry for himself and missing home when his wife calls him in a rage. She’s found out about their daughter’s money he “borrowed.” On the next day, Erev Shabbos, Zach and Izzy go touring, then visit the graveyard where some of their ancestors are buried.

t took some time to find the right place. It was easy to find Izrael Poznanski, with his enormous, dome-topped mausoleum and his name carved in giant letters. But the Lodzer Rebbes’ graves were marked by no more than simple headstones, and they were scattered throughout the cemetery.

Even the headstones might not be there anymore, as the Nazis, yemach shemam, had looted some of them to pave roads.

In the end they found an index and carefully tracked down each grave, one at a time. Their great-grandfather’s grandfather, Reb Chaim Simcha, who had blessed the shul to never burn down again, was in the eastern section, almost against the cemetery wall. The Rebbe’s headstone had the phrase “Tzaddik b’emunaso yichyeh” etched into the stone beneath his name.

“A tzaddik lives by his faith.”

A corner of the stone had been broken off. The country had been dominated by

communists for decades after the war, and at one point they nearly destroyed the cemetery. Yet somehow, this quiet monument to Jewish eternity had outlived both regimes, though it had certainly suffered damage and neglect.

“Am I supposed to do anything?” Zach asked quietly.

Reb Yossele, Reb Chaim Simcha’s son, rested near Izrael Poznanski. Perhaps the magnate had wanted a little of the great man’s reflected glory. “He was only Rebbe

for sixteen years,” Izzy said, remembering what his brother had told him.

“But he changed everything.” During Reb Yossele’s brief tenure, he founded schools, an orphanage, a home for the elderly, and several funds for widows and the poor.

His headstone said no more than his name, that of his wife, and the dates of his birth and death. Perhaps the Rebbe had wanted it that way, Izzy thought, but Izzy himself would have preferred more.

Zach and Izzy’s great-grandfather, Reb Menashe Sholom, was much harder to find. His grave was in a decrepit corner, mixed with thousands more who were killed in the Holocaust.

“I’m surprised he’s even here,” Zach pointed out. “I thought he was sent to Chelmno or Auschwitz.”

Izzy was starting to freeze. But he didn’t want to leave without at least seeing the grave. He rushed from one grave to the other, checking every stone and hoping.

“He was sent to Chelmno,” he said thoughtfully. “At least, that’s what we were told. But he’s listed as being here.

They kept searching, but it seemed impossible. Every headstone looked the same in the snow, and the rows and markers weren’t very clear.

“It’s too cold, Izzy,” Zach warned. “We can’t stay here much longer.”

“I’m freezing too,” Izzy admitted, peering myopically through the white.

“And we gotta leave soon anyway, with Shabbos coming so early.” He clapped his hands together to restore circulation, frantically looking from grave to grave and trying to read the faded letters. “But let’s give it just a few more minutes. He has to be around here somewhere.”

NINETEEN

Sebastian confides in Reb Mendel that it was his attendance at secret Jewish assemblies in Toledo that was the cause for the family’s downfall and the killing of his father.

“H

ow old were you when you attended the assemblies, Sebastian?” Reb Mendel asked.

“Nineteen.”

“You were little more than a child,” said Reb Mendel, “a young and impetuous child, without the guidance of his father. You made a mistake, but you cannot carry it around with you for the rest of your life. I’m sure your father forgave you.”

“He said he did, and I know that he meant it. But his forgiveness doesn’t change what I did.”

“You made a mistake, and you’ve regretted it deeply for so many years. Your father forgave you, the A-mighty has forgiven you, and now you must forgive yourself. According to your man Gonzalo, your father’s last question when he was tied to the stake was about you, and when he thought you were safe he died happy. You must live and flourish for your father’s sake. He will continue to live through you, but only if you can lay aside this burden of guilt and become what he would have wanted you to be.”

“I know that what you say is true,” said Sebastian. “I’ve said this to myself many times. And I’ve tried hard to be the inspired Jew my father was for the last years of his life, but it isn’t working for me. I’m ignorant of Jewish learning, and I’m confused about where I’m heading. Back in Spain, when I went to those secret Jewish assemblies in Toledo disguised as Luis Alvarez, I felt so alive, so exhilarated, so inspired. I

felt close to the A-mighty, and I loved my people although I didn’t know them and they didn’t know me. But now, I can’t recapture that excitement. I yearn to feel that bolt of lightning going through my body, but it’s not happening.”

“I understand,” said Reb Mendel.

“Do you really? In Spain, I was a prince, a warrior. I lived with danger and the specter of death every day. I thrived on it. And the danger of being a secret Jew, that was the ultimate thrill for me. My father was a deeply committed Jew, but I think that my own attachment is only superficial.”

“You’ve sacrificed so much for your Jewishness, Sebastian. It can’t be just a superficial attachment. Are you happy in Metz?”

“No, I’m miserable. My life seems to be drifting along aimlessly. I’ve trained for commerce, but I really don’t like it. I grew up as a nobleman and a soldier in the king’s army.

I am a cavalier, a warrior. Business doesn’t satisfy my soul.

I have to be honest. When I thought we’d be recovering my father’s properties, I dreamed of making investments that would bring us fabulous profits.” He chuckled dryly. “The prospect of great wealth can make a warrior into a businessman. But there are no properties and no prospects, so all that lies before me is a lifetime of struggle to make enough money to survive. It’s not a pleasant thought.”

“Sebastian, it is as you say, you’re neither here nor there.

You’re here in Metz just temporarily until you find a permanent place, perhaps Amsterdam, perhaps somewhere else.

So that alone is the cause for feeling very unsettled. Then you don’t know what you want to do with your life. That doesn’t help. You’re ashamed of your lack of knowledge about Judaism, even though you were prepared to give your life to it. That will certainly make a person unsettled. And finally, you carry a heavy burden of guilt that you cannot relinquish. There’s no easy answer to your dilemma. It may be beyond me, but let me think about it.”

“I’m glad you said that,” said Sebastian. “If you had given me an answer right away, it just wouldn’t seem genuine to me. I feel that my problem is really vast.

You know, my mother is adjusting nicely, Carolina is on a cloud, and Felipe is doing just fine. His head is always buried in a Jewish book, and he is absorbed. I sense that he’s found some of the feeling that keeps eluding me. I’m the one who’s lost. I’m the ignorant horseless cavalier.”

“Don’t berate yourself, Sebastian,” said Reb Mendel. “There is an answer for you. In the meantime, prayer always helps. Do you find prayer difficult?”

“Actually, I don’t. I unburden my soul to the A-mighty every day, and it makes me feel a little better. But I’m still waiting for an answer to my prayers. But that’s enough about me.” He forced himself to smile. “You mentioned that you wanted to tell me something.”

“Yes, I do,” said Reb Mendel. He took a deep breath. “I wanted to tell you that we will be leaving Metz. I’ve already mentioned it to Felipe, but I told him that I would like to tell you myself.”

Sebastian was stunned. “I don’t understand. You’re leaving Metz? You mean for good?”

The imperial government has come to the realization that the empire needs the help of its Jews, and they’re turning a blind eye to all the Jews coming into the city every day. Some Jews are even living inside the city walls, although they don’t have official rights of residence. My wife’s parents wouldn’t live in the city proper unless they had an official right of residence, but they’re hoping that day will also come soon. I guess when I said we are moving to Vienna it would have been more accurate to say that we are moving to Eggenschlag.”

“Eggenschlag, Vienna, it’s all the same. And what will you be doing there? Do you intend to go into business as well?”

“There’s talk of establishing a new Jewish school in one of the towns near Eggenschlag, and I’ve been assured there will be a useful role for me. My wife and I will really be sorry to leave Metz; we’ve been treated well here. But we’re definitely looking forward to life in Vienna. There’s a new spirit of enlightenment and tolerance abroad in the gentile world, and somehow, I think expulsions are a thing of the past. If that’s really true, if the Jewish community will be secure in Vienna, the city can become one of the most important in all of Europe.”

“But isn’t it dangerous to go to Vienna these days? I hear that the Turkish army

is moving north through Hungary. Three hundred thousand men! They say it’s the biggest army to cross into Europe since the Persians invaded Greece almost two thousand years ago. Instead of you going to Vienna, perhaps you should be getting your wife’s parents to leave.”

“We’ve suggested it, but they refuse,” said Reb Mendel.

“Actually, I don’t think my father-in-law is strong enough to travel any great distance. They have decided to stay, and they are hoping for the best. They believe the Turks will not advance on Vienna. According to my father-in-law — and I am sure this is not his own opinion — the Christian nations of Europe may allow Hungary to fall to the Turks, and even Poland, but they will not allow Vienna to fall to the Turks.

Vienna is the gateway to Europe, and if it falls to a Muslim army, all of Europe could fall next, and that would be the end of Christianity. The Christian powers will fight to the death to prevent that from happening.”

“So you are saying that the Turks understand this,” said Sebastian, “and that they will not advance on Vienna.”

“That is what the people of Vienna and all of Lower Austria are hoping. And besides, the Jews probably have the least to fear from the Turks. Jews are treated very well in the Turkish Empire.”

“But even so, if Vienna becomes a war zone, it’s not where you want to be.”

Reb Mendel nodded gravely. “It’s true. But the same can be said of just about every place in Europe. There has been no shortage of wars and bloodshed recently right here in France, Alsace, Lorraine, Franche Comte, Luxembourg, Flanders, the Spanish Netherlands and the United Provinces. The French, the Austrians, the Spanish, the Germans, the English, they all fight and kill one another all the time.

Everyone is struggling for the upper hand; sometimes this one aligns with that one, sometimes with the other one.

That is Europe. It is a land of incessant wars. No one is safe anywhere in Europe. My wife’s parents are placing their trust in the A-mighty and taking their chances in Vienna.

And so are we.”

“I understand,” said Sebastian. “Life is never without risks. I wish you all the best, and my prayers will always be with you. When will you be leaving?”

“Right after Pesach.”

“I see. And does that mean you won’t be coming to Carolina’s wedding?”

“I’m afraid it will be impossible. It would be a difficult journey in any case, what with having to leave the children behind for weeks or else taking them along, which would be even more difficult. The move to Vienna makes it impossible. But my thoughts will be with you and my blessings, for whatever they’re worth. This wedding celebration will complete the integration of your family into the broader Jewish community after so many generations of isolation.

Perhaps this will pave the way for your marriage as well.”

Sebastian smiled. “Since when have you become a matchmaker, Reb Mendel? But you’re right. I am thirty years old, and it’s time I should think seriously about starting my own family. But I’m not quite ready yet. Before I can find a wife, I have to find myself.”

Sukkos is the time of year when desserts get a lot of focus.

It’s Zman Simchaseinu, after all — a time we gather with family and guests to celebrate over meat, wine and other culinary delights. The Ushpizin, our guests of honor, also mark the occasion as one with upgraded festivities. And then there’s the coziness of the sukkah that tempts us to linger around the table, making dessert that perfect ending to savor.

On cold Sukkos nights, in addition to frozen and sweet treats, I love to include a warm drink, whether it’s a pitcher of homemade tea heavily infused with fruit, non-dairy coffee (decaf, at that hour!), or pareve hot chocolate.

The focus of this feature is specifically not on recipes for multi-step desserts that require the time that most of us no longer have as Yom Tov draws near, but to give you ideas of how you can take ready-bought items and put them together in tasty and beautiful combinations.

HALACHA CHECK Make sure that all ingredients you purchase are pareve. Some of the components used have both dairy and pareve options.

If plating on Yom Tov, check with your rav about what is allowed. You can prepare some of the plating before Yom Tov. Make sure to check fruits well, according to your posek’s guidance.

A PLATING PRIMER Here are two step-by-step tutorials on how to plate attractive dessert plates. Use these instructions as inspiration, and customize according to your family’s preferences.

LEMON DESSERT PLATE COMPONENTS Baker’s Choice lemon cream Spray bottle of ready whipped cream White chocolate melts Candied citrus fruits Teo Summer Soiree fruit infusion Klein’s lemon sorbet Klein’s strawberry sorbet Klein’s passion fruit sorbet Edible gold crystals Baker’s Choice strawberry spritz Note: You can make your own candied citrus fruits by thinly slicing limes, lemons and oranges, and then quartering each slice. Then cook up a cup of sugar and ½ cup water in a frying pan. Add the fruit slices.

Cook for 30 to 45 minutes, flipping occasionally.

Transfer to a parchment paper to dry. (These can be stored in an airtight container in the fridge for up to two weeks.) Please note that the citrus peels must be washed very well before cooking and/or eating.

Pipe a line across one side of the plate.

Then use a challah brush to smooth the cream down and make the strip wider.

2. Using a bottle of ready whipped cream, form three stars.

3. Place a disc of chocolate on each mound of whip.

4. Arrange the candied citrus fruits between the chocolate discs.

5. Scatter several cubes of the fruit infusion around the candied fruits.

6. Place one scoop of each of the sorbets in the center of the cream.

7. Decorate with more whip.

8. Sprinkle some gold flecks over the entire strip.

9. Decorate the empty part of the plate with three drops of strawberry sauce.

1. Fit a piping bag with a narrow tip, and fill with caramel cream. Pipe any random design, going thicker in the center and tapering off at the two sides.

2. Arrange the ice cream in the center of the design. For this plate, a stacker was used to create a cylinder of ice cream. It was then cut in half in the height, and each slice was cut in four. A scoop can also be used, or ice cream can be slightly thawed and then refrozen in silicon molds.

3. Spritz some caramel sauce over the ice cream.

4. Scatter some caramel chips.

5. Sprinkle some crushed lotus cookies on the plate.

6. Arrange glazed pecans and other decorative foods to complete the look.

ARBAAH MINIM SHUK Searching for the perfect esrog in Yerushalayim is like finding that needle in the haystack. For years, small plastic folding tables would be set up on every street corner in Yerushalayim, where vendors piled huge boxes full of esrogim for eager men to examine. In recent years, the many tables have been consolidated into the Meah Shearim Arbaah Minim Shuk.

The esrog search takes place all over the world, but Yerushalayim’s daled minim hunting is definitely unique. The variety of head coverings and attire worn by all the men searching at the same table is that heartening Jews-of-all-kinds blend that fills Yerushalayim’s streets. And the selection of esrogim, as well as lulavim, hadassim, and aravos, is likely unparalleled anywhere in the world.

At a single table, the daled minim hunter can look through dozens, if not hundreds, of esrogim. That’s important for these searchers, because even after finding a dream specimen, there’s a process. Yerushalmim flock to the doors of famous “esrog poskim” in Yerushalayim to make sure the esrog they end up buying is absolutely mehudar.

Here’s where you see men fretting over nearly imperceptible black flecks, young bachurim having a heated discussion over the tip where a pitom is missing from an esrog (did it grow that way, or…?) You can imagine that all this frenetic activity takes a lot of time, which is why the esrog season usually begins right after Rosh Hashanah.

This year, though, the market is quite different. In the year after shemittah Eretz Yisroel, which usually provides esrogim to the rest of the world, is in need of imported esrogim. There are those intrepid souls who will make the trek to the esrog fields, but that needs to be done as early as Elul (and the esrog has to be kept fresh until Sukkos!) as the hefker shemittah fields are plucked clean very quickly.

SCHLEPPING S’CHACH Did you ever see a lulav with wide, spreadout leaves? That’s the favorite kind of s’chach used in Yerushalayim. Bamboo mats hardly get a glance, while car trunks and shopping carts fill up with branches of the date palm tree. An average-sized sukkah can easily need fifty of these branches to form a secure covering, especially since the branches have a tendency to dry out in the heat of the Mediterranean sun.

Once that happens, the covered part of the sukkah might be smaller than the part that isn’t, which makes the sukkah pasul.

Therefore, stocking up on extra branches is a good idea. Fortunately, they aren’t very expensive, just a few shekels apiece.

AH SUKKALEH AH KLEINEH Walking down the street or into one’s building entrance can be a bit complicated on Sukkos; there are wooden structures everywhere! Every family, shul and bachurim dirah needs a space under the sky to construct their sukkah. Many buildings in Yerushalayim are built with this in mind. The porches are staggered, as shown, to accommodate ever-tinier sukkah spaces. (This is one way of knowing if a building houses frum Yidden — check the porches!)

What about the people without porches? They might build their sukkah right on the street in front of their building, never mind that they’re perched on a mountain. Or they might build a temporary porch extending out over a public space, because their neighbors allow it just for a week and half, for a mitzvah!

These daredevil sukkahs are all over Yerushalayim.

When Moshiach comes and the Beis Hamikdash will be rebuilt, we’ll appreciate the neis of, “No one ever said, ‘Tzar li hamakom she’alin biYerushalayim.”

DECORATIONS FOR SALE If you take a stroll down Malchei Yisrael and Meah Shearim in the days before Sukkos, you’ll bump into more sukkah decorations for sale than you can keep track of. Every storefront puts out tables full of Sukkos-themed signs, and then there are little kids selling their creations from tiny tables or stools. These Yerushalmi children also often sell handmade koishiklach, the rings made out of lulav leaves that get placed around the daled minim. Competition is fierce!

One unique sukkah decoration to look out for is the shivas haminim. You’ll find actual bundles of wheat and barley stalks spread out for sale. Or you can buy all seven minim in little glass jars.

BIRCHAS KOHANIM It starts at the bus stops, where brightly colored signs instruct men to sit in the front and ladies in the back. And as the multitudes stream into the Kosel Plaza, they’ll get a glimpse of one of the largest gatherings featuring every type of Jew in the world. Many choose to walk the last part of the way, both because of the crush of traffic as well as to be mekayem the mitzvah of aliyah l’regel. (Being oleh regel is not a chiyuv today; this is l’zecher the mitzvah.)

And of course, every kohen in the vicinity makes sure to be at the Kosel if he can, to give Klal Yisroel the bracha of “Yevarechecha.” Although Birchas Kohanim takes place at the Kosel every day, the bracha given on Chol Hamoed Sukkos is special.

The hush resonates louder than the words as thousands of Yidden listen intently. At the end, their amen reverberates like thunder off the Kosel stones.

CHOL HAMOED DESTINATIONS For most Yerushalmim, Chol Hamoed is family time.

(Yes, really!) It’s a common sight to see families balancing large pans of food, heading onto buses or pushing strollers through the streets. They’re headed to a different large family gathering every day.

Just as it says in halacha, many of the menfolk and bachurim visit their rav, rosh yeshivah, or maggid shiur on Sukkos. These chashuve people have sukkahs filled with guests throughout Chol Hamoed, as their students come and go, drinking in their divrei Torah.

A SUKKAH EVERYWHERE YOU GO When you’re traveling around Eretz Yisroel sightseeing, you may wonder where you’ll be able to find a place to stop and make a “leishev basukkah.” No need to worry! Public sukkahs abound all over Eretz Yisroel. They include the makeshift canvas structure built on the street with a plastic folding table and chairs where you can stop to take a drink, sukkahs built at bus and train stops, and of course, the many eateries and restaurants that build sukkahs open to the public.

SIMCHAS BEIS HASHO’EIVAH SCENES As soon as the first day of Sukkos is over, the streets of Yerushalayim ring with lively music. The simchas beis hasho’eivah dancing has started! Joy is palpable in the air — in the shuls full of dancing men, in the streams of people heading to celebrate. While many chassidishe kehillos in Meah Shearim don’t allow outsiders, you’ll find many a simchas beis hasho’eivah that is visible from the street, or that is open to all. The dancing goes on for hours into the night, with live, booming music that makes the air vibrate.

If you’re sleeping in a sukkah, don’t count on an early night!

HOSHANA RABBAH HIGHLIGHTS If you pass any makom torah or tefillah in Yerushalyim at any given time Hoshana Rabbah night you will find people spending the night awake. They’ll be saying Mishneh Torah, learning intensely, or reciting Tehillim, trying to gather those last few zechuyos as the night slips away.

In the morning, you’ll see everyone clutching their daled minim, their bundle of aravos for banging on the floor, and all the men are dressed in white. If you watch the Yerushalmi men heading to shul on Hoshana Rabbah morning, it may remind you of Yom Kippur. Yerushalmim wear white clothing on Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur, and on Hoshana Rabbah, as well. It’s easier to remember the significance of the day when stark white clothing and a serious atmosphere pervade the streets.

ROUND TWO: HAKAFOS SHENIYOS Simchas Torah features a cherry on the top for all visitors from chutz la’aretz: hakafos sheniyos with live music. While it’s already Motzei Yom Tov for all the people living in Eretz Yisroel, most big chassidishe kehillos dance hakafos sheniyos after Shemini Atzeres is over. This minhag comes from the Arizal, who danced hakafos again to share in the simchas haTorah of the bnei chutz la’aretz, who dance their main hakafos that night.

n the Sefer Hamitzvos, the Rambam lists Mitzvas Asei Number 18 as the mitzvah for every Jewish male to write a sefer Torah. The source for this mitzvah is the pasuk: “And now, write for yourselves this song, and teach it to Bnei Yisroel” (Devarim 31:19).

Most Jews nowadays do not write their own sefer Torah, nor do they commission a sofer to do this work for them; instead, they rely upon sifrei Torah that were commissioned by the community instead. Still, when a person does acquire a sefer Torah, a tremendous celebration ensues, and the experience is a unique, once-in-a-lifetime event.

We spoke to three people who commissioned the writing of sifrei Torah.

fter my mother, Rochel bas Yosef Shaul, passed away, one of the einiklach, the briach hatichon of the family, came up with the idea of writing a sefer Torah in her memory. My father, three sisters and I were all very excited about the idea. My son is a sofer, so we immediately knew that he would write the Torah. For my mother’s einikel to write a sefer Torah in her zechus would be the greatest uplift to her neshamah.

My son began to write, and the whole family joined together in support of the cause. Everyone, from my father to my siblings, children, nieces and nephews, contributed as

rah to the Satmer Rebbes’ homes to fill in more letters in their presence and, during the Shloshes Yemei Hagbalah before Shavuos, the time for the siyum arrived. The entire family met at my father’s house in Monsey for the ceremony. Everything was exquisitely decorated, and there were sandwiches for the einiklach and l’chaim for the adults. We took turns filling in the last letters, and arranged the kibbudim for everyone to take turns holding the Torah and to carry it outdoors.

We paraded through the streets with the Torah under the chuppah and music playing from the moving orchestra. I was enveloped by a feeling of tremendous simcha. My Rav, the

As my son wrote, we selected the accompanying ornaments. We purchased two mentelach — a white one for Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur, and a maroon one for the rest of the year. We had the names of all of the children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren embroidered on the mentelach. We also bought a silver and gold crown, and silver and gold atzei chaim. We wanted our Torah to be absolutely stunning.

In Nissan of 2021, after nearly two years, the sefer Torah was close to completion. The family met on the 24th of Nissan for my mother’s yahrtzeit and a siyum in Mishnayos, and we menfolk filled in a few letters of the Torah to speed it along.

After that, things happened quickly. We took the sefer To-

Chechinover Rav of Monroe, had told me that at a hachnasas sefer Torah, the neshamah of the person in whose honor the Torah is written comes and is present in a way that brings joy to everyone. He said that it would bring more joy than even a wedding.

It was true and so palpable. The parade, the l’chaim in the shul into which we brought the Torah, and the accompanying hachnasas sefer Torah were all beautiful. Everyone was tremendously uplifted. We arranged special souvenirs — USB sticks with footage of the Zeide and the Bubbe, and a booklet of family writings — and we gave these out to the family in the hall where the seudas mitzvah took place. But the joy that permeated the event was so much greater than all of the physical details.

Today, our family’s sefer Torah is in Ohel Rachel, the shul that I started in my neighborhood, which is named after my mother.

Y

ad L’Achim is an important counter-missionary organization that’s known, among other things, for rescuing Jewish women and their children from Arab villages. People who donate money to the organization every month are automatically entered into a raffle for an all-expenses-paid sefer Torah of their own. But winning the raffle wasn’t exactly on my mind when we began donating a small sum of money to Yad L’Achim every month a few years back.

And then one day I came home, and my husband said, “Esther, we won a sefer Torah through Yad L’Achim.”

I was shocked. Our contribution to Yad L’Achim had always been about supporting the mitzvah, not the prize. To win a sefer Torah was very exciting!

We wasted no time verifying the details.

Yad L’Achim’s representative told us that their prize included paying a sofer to write a Torah for us, the musical procession at its siyum, and the seudas mitzvah afterward.

We were thrilled!

We quickly set about finding a sofer with whom we felt comfortable. We wanted a specific ksav so we were happy to pay the difference in price.

Months passed. The sofer from whom we had commissioned the sefer Torah became ill, so we hired a different sofer in his stead.

It took almost two years for the Torah to be complete. In Adar of 2020, the day before the COVID lockdown laws went into effect, the siyum took place.

was indescribable. My husband and I, along with our children and grandchildren, all wore our Shabbos best, and Yad L’Achim representatives came to our house for the beginning of the ceremony. Everything was beautifully decorated and arranged. There were special lights from our house to the street. A music truck stood outside and began to play as the sefer Torah was carried outside.

What a beautiful Torah! The names of my parents and my husband’s parents are embossed on the mantel, and we also purchased a beautiful crown for the sefer Torah.

Relatives, friends and neighbors accompanied the Torah all the way to the Beit Knesset Hagadol, where the plan was to leave the Torah for a few days until it could be brought to the shul where my husband is the Rav. Yad L’Achim’s music truck accompanied us through the streets as the men danced with feeling and excitement. The event was so tremendously moving.

Hakafos took place at the shul followed by the seudas mitzvah in a neighborhood hall.

Once again, we upgraded the prize package from standard seudah fare to a seudah that was truly spectacular.

A few days after the siyum we had the sefer Torah moved to the my husband’s place, where it is the pride and joy of the shul.

Whenever I recall the event and everything leading up to it, I am filled with a sense of elation.

y wife and I have been living in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, on shlichus for fifteen years. About seven years ago someone contacted me. His son had passed away while on a trip in Wyoming, and he wanted to donate to our community a previously owned sefer Torah in his son’s honor.

whenever two sifrei Torah needed to be read, such as on Yom Tov or Shabbos Rosh Chodesh, it took some time to roll and then unroll the sefer Torah for the readings.

Last year, on Rosh Hashanah, I mentioned that for a mere $50,000, our community could purchase a second sefer Torah and not have to spend so much time rolling and unrolling our only Torah.

Three community members approached me after shul that day telling me that they wanted to pay for a new sefer Torah. “But,” they said, “we’d like to remain anonymous.”

I promised to keep the donors’ identities a secret. Immediately after Rosh Hashanah, I contacted Machon Stam about the purchase of a new Torah. They sent me pictures of several different types of ksav, which I forwarded to a renowned sofer in Eretz Yisroel so he could advise me. He told me which ksav he recommended, and I commissioned the services of that sofer. This sofer flew to Wyoming for the opening ceremony that we held as he wrote the first pasuk in the Torah.

As the sofer continued to write the sefer Torah in New York, various community members contributed the ornaments that would make our Torah as beautiful as possible. One family donated the crown in the memory of their husband and father, and another family donated a silver Yad. The Torah was completed in August of this year. The sofer returned to Wyoming for the siyum, and various community members were given the honor of filling in the last few letters of the Torah. After the Torah was completed and rolled up, it was escorted outdoors with a chuppah and musical pickup truck. Police, on horseback and in cars, blocked the roads to the town square so we could celebrate without concerns about traffic. Hundreds of people came outside to celebrate the perpetuation of over 3,300 years of tradition in our small-town community. It was extremely moving.

The musical parade and hakafos were followed by a beautiful seudas mitzvah in our shul. Without a doubt, the event is one that will long be remembered in our community.

Heshy* and I had been married for four years when we decided that it was no longer worth our while to shell out our hard-earned wages on rent money anymore.

“It’s like throwing the money into the garbage can every month,” I told my husband. “Our salary is taking us no place.”

“It’s a garbage can that comes with a nice roof over our heads,” Heshy quipped. “But yes, it is definitely time for us to find an apartment of our own.”

Two days later, Heshy returned from kollel with stars in his eyes. “You know that empty lot two blocks over?” he asked me. “Well, a group of contractors got a permit to use the land to build apartment buildings. If we act quickly, Yitty, we’ll be able to secure one of those apartments. What do you say to the idea of purchasing a condo?”

I said the plan sounded phenomenal. I also realized just how quickly we needed to act if we were to snatch up one of those prize apartment buildings in central Williamsburg. It didn’t matter that our income was but a drop in the bucket compared to the thousands of dollars necessary for a down payment. This was an opportunity that we could not afford to miss.

“We’ll make it work, Yitty,” Heshy reassured me.

“We’ll scrimp, save and borrow. But ultimately, laying out the money now is going to save us money in the long run.”

We counted our savings. We had about $10,000, and the down payment was $75,000. We had a $65,000 balance to cover.

By networking with relatives and friends, talking to people at work, and swinging over to gemachim during bein hasedarim, we somehow managed to get together the funds. Fortunately, our friends and relatives all understood the importance of helping us purchase a home, and they were happy to come forward as much as possible.

P-day — meaning, Payment Day — was almost a holiday. We handed over our carefully amassed money to the contracting team and exhaled. We had taken the first step toward purchasing a home. It was a moment to celebrate.

“Your payment record is here,” the contractor told Heshy, handing him a small slip of paper with our signatures on it. “Hold on to this well because you will need to show us this document in a few years when the apartment building is up and it’s time to get the mortgage ball rolling.”

The down payment for our apartment was the first step toward what would become a legally binding agreement. But in the meantime, before a mortgage could be secured from a bank, our agreement was a “heimish” one. That is, that one piece of paper attesting to our ownership of one 1,500-square-foot apartment in an apartment building complex of 75 apartments was our only proof of purchase.

Months passed, then years.

Nearly five times a week, for the duration of that time, I and bring it here as proof of ownership, or bring a $75,000 would walk past the lot two blocks from our rental apartment payment.”

Out came the honey dishes, followed by Heshy’s kittel and our children’s white clothing.

And then came the day that I removed our silver esrog pushkah from the cardboard box labeled “silver” (there was no fancy silver closet in our rental).

I picked up a sponge, applied some silver polish, and prepared to polish the esrog box. It was a box that we used only when we were at home for Sukkos, That hadn’t been the case for several years, and the box was in need of a good polish.

I buffed the box’s exterior and then pulled open the lid to get into some hard-to-reach crevices.

A folded piece of paper winked up at me from one of the corners of the box.

I froze.

Was it that piece of paper?

With trembling fingers, I pulled the paper out of the box and unfolded it.

This is to certify that a down payment of $75,000 has been received. The money will go toward the purchase of an apartment on the fifth floor of building G, apartment 5B. I couldn’t stand anymore. My knees refused to support me, and I flopped into the closest chair.

That paper. The paper that had been the source of so much agmas THE MONEY nefesh and material difPOURED IN ficulty.

It had appeared now, AGAIN, AS IT right before Sukkos — HAD THE FIRST Zman Simchaseinu.

I pulled over the TIME — BUT cordless phone and THIS TIME OUR shakily dialed my husband’s number. “The HEARTS WERE paper,” I told him. “I’m FILLED WITH holding the document that says that we own the SADNESS AND apartment, right here in DESPAIR. my hand. It was in your silver esrog pushkah all along.”

My husband returned home immediately from some Yom Tov shopping, and together we looked at the signed paper as though gazing upon a miracle. We called the contractor together, and he immediately agreed to return our second $75,000 payment now that we had concrete proof of our first payment.

Sukkos that year was buoyed with palpable excitement and joy. The joy of experiencing our own little miracle.

It is one of those evenings when the dark tentacles of night reach into my home and hold a grip on young little hearts.

I

t is bedtime, and my children are too scared to go to sleep.

“Let me stay in your bed tonight,” one implores. “I’m so scared! I heard such a scary story today.”

“I’m afraid of a robber,” the second says with a shiver in his voice. “And of animals.

Bears. And I’m afraid of the dark, too! I won’t be able to sleep!”

“Mommy, I’m so afraid too. I always worry about Gehinnom. I’m afraid to die. I’m also afraid you’ll die, and then what’ll be with me?”

Their morbid portrayals soon hold a grip on my own heart, too. How, indeed, can I protect these precious children of mine from calamity? How I wish I could hold them safe and assure them that nothing will ever harm them. But, like them, I’m scared too. Maybe not so much of robbers and wildlife intruders, but the world is so full of danger, and I wish I can wield some power of protection over them.

“Hashem loves us, kinderlach. He’s always watching over us. It’s normal to feel scared at night. When it gets dark and the world is quiet, all our fears surface.”

They eye me with worry-creased faces.

“Let’s read Krias Shema together. There are so many beautiful pesukim that can calm us down when we’re scared.”

We sing piece by piece, in a heartfelt manner that I can only dream of when I read Krias Shema every night.

I translate the words of Hamalach to them, and the rendition sounds a little different tonight, even when the tone is as grating and the key as off as any other night…

“Hinei lo yanum v’lo yishan Shomer Yisroel,” I say. “Do you know what these words mean? Hashem is saying that He does not slumber and does not even sleep for a minute. He’s up all night watching over us.”

I feel one rigid body relaxing a little bit as the meaning of the words he often mindlessly recites sink in.

And then we get to the pasuk that I hold on to at times when I am afraid for the very well-being of these precious treasures — these darling innocent children, who get their anxiety and vivid imaginations that conjure up bloodcurdling scenarios from no one else but their mother.

When I know they’re crossing the street on their own; when I worry if they’re being unsupervised in shul; when they’re on a school trip and I worry, worry, worry about the bus. About the road. About the attractions. About kids getting lost.

When I stand at the window waiting for them to return safely.

Now it’s time to share my vision with them.

“B’shem Hashem Elokei Yisroel… Mimini Michoel. Raise your right hands. Here on your right side is Malach Michoel, watching you around the clock.”

Right hands wave in air.

“Umismoli Gavriel. Raise your left hands. On your left side is the Malach Gavriel. Do you feel how you are protected by malachim from both sides?

“Umilfano Uriel. In front of you — point to the front — is the Malach Uriel, shielding you.

“Umei’achorei Refael, and behind you is the Malach Refael.

“But we are not done. Because V’al roshi, and here right over your heads, is Shechinas Kel. Hashem alone is watching you.”

I pause a moment for them to comfortably lie down.

“So when we are ever afraid, feel this heavenly entourage surrounding you. Wherever you go, Hashem and his melachim are with you. We are always surrounded by their protection.”

I’m still midway through my passionate words, bolstering my bitachon as I bolster my young ones; I’m still before Adon Olam and its climactic ending — v’lo ira — when I see the peaceful faces of my youngsters drifting into a sweet, calm slumber.

Because what I remind myself when I’m scared, my children now know too.

We are always surrounded by a heavenly shelter. Ufros aleinu sukkas shlomecha.

would go back to Beit Shemesh, but in the meantime, we were here in beautiful Monsey, waiting for this guy to show up and build our sukkah — just a few sticks for the frame, which was to measure two by two feet. And now it was 54 minutes before Sukkos.

Monsey was a sweet, sweet exile, but I was not used to having to sit for kiddush and soup while shivering in a blanket — to sing one song, then bentch and soon reluctantly re-enter our more permanent abode. You need a warm winter coat to bear the Siberian — I mean, the Monsey — exile. I was used to sweating it out in our Beit Shemesh sukkah.

But there were perks to the exile: High pine trees reaching to the skies of Monsey, beautiful parks and green grass and coffee shops, and of course, the whole reason we were there: my new kidney.

A time to scatter stones…

Sukkos, 5780, the year of COVID, 2020, the world was in exile from itself. Yes, America is the Land of the Free, but still it was an exile. Kind of like a sukkah. Our sukkah was an exile in a country where the Jews were in exile during a plague that exiled the world.

So when I received a beautiful, shiny kidney — only slightly used — I was contemplating the amazing fact that kidney donations are the big unifier. This was true especially in the days of COVID, when for some reason Hashem separated us even more by placing the whole world in quarantine. It occurred to me then that there is a great and wonderful movement for gathering our dispersed sparks: kidney donations!

In fact, I have four kidneys altogether — just like the four species: two of my own; one from a wonderful lady in Beit Shemesh that was slowly rejected by my body (but still helps as a filter); and one from another very fine Jew from Baltimore. Kibbutz galuyos inside my body.

Kidney donations bring Jews together. Every kind of Jew gives kidneys: chassidish, Litvish, Sefardi, secular, MO, chareidi. Esrogim, aravos, hadassim, lulavim. Every kind of Jew gives to every other kind of Jew. He finally came, the worker. He built a frame with four sticks, and we filled in the walls. We dragged two boards from the garage with the words “For Sale” written on one side. The other side of each board was plain wood, and we had a few pine branches for s’chach. The sukkah fit exactly two people. Maybe someone could have joined us, standingroom only, holding in his stomach. But we did welcome one guest into our sukkah: my newest kidney.

It hit us like… a million moving boxes.

I’m not the biggest optimist in town, but one thing I never complained about is my apartment. I love it. It’s custom-made for my family. It’s not fancy, but it’s comfortable and new and fresh and high-ceilinged and full of windows.

And did I mention that the apartment is new? So new that There’s even a private corner in the yard that we can call our own. And the backyard borders with a tremendous ex- we’re still busy outfitting it? panse of green. And the neighbors are wonderful.

Also, we had a plan. A smart one. Another five to eight years Since I love my apartment so much, I splurged on items to in this apartment, and then we’d move to something perfect and permanent. Something of our own. With rooms for coumake it even more mine.

from the trauma of moving to this apartment, and now we have to do it all over again.

And it’s expensive. Money that is meant to go toward our own house. And… and… my loveseat and pantry and two toy closets...

It’s impossible to buy a house in ninety days. Even if we could afford it (the doorknob, I mean). The market is crazy, says everyone. Rent prices are insane, screams everyone.

And they’re all right. The rents are sky-high, the housing market is completely outrageous. And our bank account is not the outrageous type.

After the numbness wore off, I realized my cabinets were a mess. Random imitation Oxos were strewn about, confectioners’ sugar liberally sprinkled in the baking cabinet.

THE PANELS ARE COMING OUT OF THE BASEMENT. A MOTLEY CREW OF NEIGHBORHOOD BOYS ASSISTS MY HUSBAND WITH THE JOB. And there were scuff marks on the walls from the new school shoes. In my house! And they stayed right there.

I no longer even run to grab a magic sponge to wipe off the crayon scribbles my toddler inflicts on the playroom walls.

I don’t care because it is all suddenly so temporary. I had plans for the next seventy years, and it was all a house of cards (yeah, I can get really mean with idioms).

So what if my summer and winter clothes are stuffed into one closet? We’re moving, and I don’t care about this house anymore. So what if the shelf supports in the closet came loose and with it a pile of books? We’re moving anyway.

I was about to get new felt pads for the dining room chairs.

There’s no need; I simply don’t care about the floors getting all scratched up anymore.

Many days I walk around in a daze, contemplating how much thought, money and time I wasted on something so temporary just because it had the illusion of permanence.

So as my house of cards is crumbling, Sukkos is creeping up on us. The panels are coming out of the basement. A motley crew of neighborhood boys assists my husband with the job. The tarp finally makes it out of the narrow door frame.

And the message of Sukkos finally hits home.

What are we building? A temporary home suffused with meaning. The loving relationship between Hashem and His children is experienced right here — not in the perfectly arranged and painted dining room, not in the shiny acrylic white kitchen with LED lighting.

Because the temporary nature of Sukkos is its beauty. The mismatched panels, the kiddie artwork, the leaking schlak; it all shows us that it’s not the walls or the security of a sturdy, permanent home that reflects our purpose.

Because when we lose it all and we think there’s nothing left, we’re actually left with what matters most.

Sukkah The

Back in the day, when we had the privilege of hosting my in-laws for Sukkos, there were a few things we knew would be part of our Yom Tov festivities. My mother-in-law was going to come with a cooler filled with soup, compote and (hopefully) a massive bone-in veal roast, and at some point in time during their stay, my father-in-law was going to regale us with his heartfelt rendition of the iconic Sukkah’le song. Even though that musical moment would be over before we knew it, it was a reminder that there is something about Sukkos that makes us wax nostalgic for the sukkahs of our youth, which in my case were definitely memorable ones.

While my teenage years were spent eating in a homemade canvas sukkah built on a frame of angle irons that looked pretty much like a giant erector set, the sukkah of my early childhood was one that my father made out of Masonite boards, built to withstand whatever weather was destined to head our way

over the next week. It’s hard to appreciate today just what it took to build a sukkah 40, 50 or 60 years ago. But my father was the ultimate do-it-yourselfer, long before Home Depot began offering one-stop shopping for wannabe sukkah builders.

And so, my father went out and bought sheets of the afore-

mentioned Masonite — a useful hardboard developed in 1924 that was made by applying steam, heat, pressure and resin to wood chips. Masonite was lighter, more durable and more weather-resistant than regular plywood. In the absence of our multipurpose minivans, my father hauled these boards home on the roof of his 1964 Rambler, putting a blanket on top of the car to ensure that it didn’t get a single scratch or ding from the job.

Putting together the sukkah would have been a project in and of itself, even if it hadn’t been rainy and windy on the day that it was first built. Nailing 1x2-inch strips of wood to the perimeter of every piece of Masonite, my father used extralong nails, bending the excess metal over the wood to give the panels extra strength, with metal brackets fastened to every joint for additional reinforcement. Each section was connected to the next with hooks and eyes that were screwed into the wooden frames, with wire protruding from the end pieces.

These wires were then wrapped tightly around nails that my father had driven into the bricks of our house, which served as the sukkah’s fourth wall. There was plenty of blood, sweat and splinters poured into every piece of that sukkah. No matter how much it rained or how hard the wind blew, our sukkah was not going to come down.

And it never, ever did. Even when our neighbors saw their sukkahs caving in when extreme conditions hit, our little sukkah stayed up, year after year after year.

Our s’chach was another of my father’s do-it-yourself projects, not surprising for someone whose childhood sukkahs in

Poland were constructed out of whatever doors or pieces of lumber could be found in his town. Most of my friends had individual bamboo poles for their s’chach, which were slid one by one onto the wooden frame atop the sukkah (since today’s super-convenient mats had yet to be invented). But my father used one-inch wooden slats, spacing them to let the light through — an effort that required gloves unless you wanted to walk away from the job with hands full of splinters. In a nod to his European roots, my father always added greenery to the s’chach. He’d cut branches from our backyard trees to ensure that our sukkah would smell like his childhood sukkahs back in Bendzin.

He layered on other greenery as well. I have vivid memories of my father stopping our car on the side of the highway and walking into a huge field of tall reeds to harvest some additional s’chach. I must have been four or five years old at the time, and seeing my father vanishing completely into the reeds left me terrified. But he emerged smiling, tossing the greenery into the trunk along with whatever saw or trimmer he had brought along in the car to make sure he got the job done right.

ast forward a few decades to my adulthood. My husband and I have had two different sukkahs, both bought from companies that do nothing but sell sukkahs. I can tell you in all honesty that neither was as solidly constructed as my father’s self-designed Masonite sukkah. The first sukkah was flattened completely by a particularly nasty storm, while the second has required some TLC after being battered by extremely vicious winds. But the past two years have seen us taking after my father by enjoying Yom Tov in do-it-yourself sukkahs of our own, constructed by my wonderful husband after my parents were unable to come enjoy Sukkos with the extended family as they had done for years.

Baruch Hashem, finding instructions to build your own sukkah isn’t all that difficult today.

Our 2020 COVID sukkah arrived with a giant tarp, metal pipes, six-inch bungee loops, and an assortment of hardware, sold on Amazon as “Top and Bottom Fittings for 10’ x 10’ SUKKAH – Sukkot.”

When things changed in 2021 and we needed just a small sukkah at my parents’ Florida apartment, my husband thought out of the box once again, placing an Amazon order for a 4x4foot pop-up shower tent — an item that looks remarkably like the hugely popular pop-up sukkahs, albeit at a significantly lower price point.

It wasn’t anywhere near as durable as the sukkah of my childhood, but it did the job, and I know my father was proud to see us carrying on his tradition of resourcefulness.

This year it looks like it’s going to be another Eller-original sukkah, as we head off on another adventure — one that may require some creativity. We’ll just have to wait and see how things turn out!

Miri’s Story “Two are better than one.”

here were piles of books everywhere. The contents of the bookshelves in the library corner had been emptied onto the ABC carpet. If one looked closely, they could see a girl with a slight frame and dark eyes sitting in the middle of the pile.

Miri could almost always be found in the library corner. Every day, she would sit on the couch or the floor with a huge pile of books on either side as she methodically went

through the entire collection. The books were always stacked and read in the same order. As Miri looked through the pages, her eyes became animated, full of life and wonder. She would mouth words on each page, but there was no sound other than the swish of pages turning.

Miri was somewhat introverted and did not show much interest in activities. She was shy and withdrawn, refusing to socialize at all. Here in the library corner, however, Miri

cifically anxiety, has risen sharply. To rise above this anxiety, children need to feel that they are loved at all costs.

They need to know that their parent’s love is not tied to their performance. A parent’s love needs to be unconditional. This serves as a rock and a foundation for children to be able to grow and develop and face the world and its challenges.

felt safe and at home. Books seemed to cast a magical spell over her. The books would beckon to her to lose herself in the fantastical world of make-believe, and soon there would be a faraway look in her eyes. The books were Miri’s friends.

By now it was the sixth week of school. While the other children in class had adjusted to school quite well, Miri still refused to speak to anyone. At three and a half, she was one of the older children in the nursery class, but it was her first school experience.

As the therapist assigned to Miri’s case, I wanted to help her adjust and acclimate to classroom routines. I was also interested in facilitating social interactions between Miri and her peers. If only she would let me enter her world.

n this case, Miri felt tied to her mother, even when her mother was not present. She seemed to feel incapacitated without her.

Whenever they were together, her mother did all the talking.

Her mother spoke in a loud, animated voice and used exaggerated hand gestures. She was knowledgeable and overbearing. It looked like Miri wasn’t even given a chance to express herself.

If parents, therapists or teachers want children to succeed, they need to step back and create opportunities for children. Children need to be given a chance to think, come up with solutions, share their ideas, answer questions and state preferences. Independence is giving a child the wings to fly on their own.

Miri’s mother became demanding and irate when Miri refused to talk in school. Each night, she would tell me on the phone, “Miri has a full vocabulary, and she speaks a lot at home. I don’t understand; is she acting like a brat, or is she just being stubborn?” I tried to explain to her that I didn’t feel that Miri was stubborn or doing this by choice. Miri was dealing with social anxiety.

Miri had traits that appeared to be selective mutism. Perhaps these behaviors served as a coping mechanism for her.

Miri checked off all the criteria: She would not speak at times when she should, like in school; Miri’s lack of speaking got in the way of school and of friendships; the behavior lasted for at least one month; and Miri spoke the language that was needed at that time.

Now we had a name for what we were observing, a “diagnostic label.” This would serve as a guide for us to understand Miri and help her in the most practical and beneficial way. I

iri’s mother called me numerous times a day. Miri was their oldest child, and her parents were clearly worried about her. After observing Miri and speaking with her parents, I found that Miri seemed to be suffering from oldest-child syndrome.

Many parents live vicariously through their children, hoping their kids will outshine their own accomplishments and achievements. They need their child to make them look good to the world. Thus, an oldest child often receives a lot of attention, love and pressure from their parents, who are anxious for the child to achieve perfection in all areas. Feelings of inferiority may then surface in the child, as the goal of perfection seems unattainable. It is important for parents to differentiate: Is this about me or is it about my child?

Since Miri enjoyed reading books, we thought of different ways to utilize her passion to help her. We worked together — Miri’s teacher, her speech therapist and I — to brainstorm and come up with ideas that would help Miri emerge from her shell.

Each day, Miri would come to the therapy room with a few girls from her class. Using a variety of art materials, we recreated classics and some of Miri’s favorite books: Corduroy, The Very Hungry Caterpillar, The Rainbow Fish and more. In a small group, Miri felt more comfortable expressing herself. She also enjoyed mixing her two favorite things: books and art.

During storytime, Miri was called upon to hold the Big Book for the class. The books, of course, contained important messages that we hoped Miri would internalize. At first Miri was hesitant to help out in class, but with some coaxing, she agreed.

The teacher also formed a lending library. This allowed students to take home books. Miri was very excited with this opportunity. It would serve as an important home-school connection for her. Each day, Miri proudly returned the books to school and chose new ones.

Soon Miri’s mother came on board to help. She organized weekly playdates for Miri, which were essential. They helped Miri form close connections to her peers.

s the weeks went by, Miri was able to slip into a more comfortable routine. At first she would whisper to classmates, and then to adults. Slowly, Miri emerged. She stood a little straighter and seemed to grow taller and more comfortable in her own skin.

Her favorite slogan became: “I think I can. I think I can. I think I can. 1846 Conrad Shick, a German architect, draws up plans for Meah Shearim.

Meah Shearim was intended to be an attractive alternative to the main Yishuv, which was overcrowded and plagued by unsanitary conditions. It was one of the first communities built outside the Old City’s walls.

1874 Meah Shearim is formally established.

Due to the security issues of moving to what was then an isolated outpost, the homes in Meah Shearim were fortresslike, with thick outer walls and no windows, in order to protect the inhabitants from marauders, criminals and wild animals.

These inward-facing homes shared courtyards that were designed to be a green area, but quickly filled with practical amenities, such as cowsheds and the like.

1880 A landmark year for Meah Shearim, in which 100 apartments were deemed suitable for occupancy.

Over the next two decades, the neighborhood grew exponentially. By the turn of the century, Meah Shearim held over 300 houses, a flour mill and a bakery. The neighborhood’s cheap and modern housing solutions attracted Jews and Arabs alike.

During this time, Meah Shearim experienced a decline.

By 1916, only 818 residents were living there.

Meah Shearim experiences a revival.

With the passage of time, the neighborhood grew congested, as the children of Meah Shearim grew, married, and settled in the area. Temporary “houses” in the form of sheds and tin huts were constructed in courtyards, and second floors were hastily added to accommodate the growing population.

Slowly, due to the overcrowding, Meah Shearim began losing popularity.

Under the rule of the British, Meah Shearim experienced a rebirth and began to thrive once again.

The following years included a series of ups and downs for the neighborhood, as they were the target of heavy bombing during the war of 1948. Only in 1967, when the nearby Old City came under Jewish rule once again, did the area take off, growing in popularity and renown ever since.

Did you know?

Commonly confused with Geulah, Meah Shearim is actually a separate neighborhood, bordering Geulah to the east. Geulah was established in 1927 by Avraham Chasidoff, a banker who named the main street after his daughter, Geulah. Today that street is called Rechov Malchei Yisrael, and it leads directly into Meah Shearim, where the street continues under a different name: Rechov Meah Shearim.

Meah Shearim is named for a pasuk in Bereishis that describes the bountiful crop with which Yitzchak Avinu was blessed: “Vayizra Yitzchok… vayimtza… meah shearim.”

Meah Shearim is home to countless groups of Yidden, including those of Belz, Boyan, Breslov, Brisk, Chabad, Dushinsky, Gur, Kamenitz, Karlin-Stolin, Pinsk-Karlin, Mir, Munkacz, Perushim / Talmidei HaGra, Satmar, Sefardim, Shomer Emunim, Slobodka, Slonim, Toldos Aharon, Toldos Avrohom Yitzchok and Vizhnitz. Meah Shearim also hosts the headquarters of the famous Eidah Hachareidis.

The Levush Think “Meah Shearim,” and images of gold caftans and white yarmulkes come to mind. Although the look is not limited to residents of the neighborhood (and conversely, many residents of Meah Shearim do not dress in this manner), the association of Meah Shearim with the Yerushalmi levush remains strong.

The Yarmulke • Until the age of two, boys wear white white yarmulkes knitted by their mothers.

These yarmulkes contain a specific number of holes, as determined by Kabbalah.

• After age two, white yarmulkes continue to be worn. These, however, are made using a different pattern, without holes.

The Capes • Women drape short black capes over their shoulders when leaving the house. All-black head coverings are worn as well. The reason for the color is twofold: 1. The kehillah is located in close proximity to the Makom Hachurban. Black was instituted as a communal sign of awareness and mourning.

2. In an effort to create a communal dress code, black and white were chosen again and again, for the simple reason that, unlike other colors that can be used in various shades and hues, black and white remain forever unchanged.

• On Shabbos and Yamim Tovim, the black cape and head coverings are exchanged for white, a sign of purity and celebration.

The Bekeshe • During the week, single boys wear a black overcoat with a gartel, whereas married men wear a bekeshe with black and white stripes.

• The bekeshe is not worn outside of Eretz Yisroel • In effort to avoid the slightest possibility of shaatnez, the kehillos of Toldos Aharon and Toldos Avraham Yitzchak never wear wool, as was originally instituted by the Rebbe, Reb Aharon Roth, zy”a.

• Most Yerushalmim wear gold and black bekeshes on Shabbos, but only after marriage. However, the boys of Toldos Aharon and Toldos Avraham Yitzchok (also referred to as Reb Ahrelech) wear both the gold caftan and a shtreimel while still unmarried. Among these groups, married men are differentiated by the color of their socks.

Married men wear white, whereas single boys wear black.

• Some Yerushalmi chassidim, such as those of Dushinsky and Kehal Perushim, change out of their gold and black bekeshes on Shabbos afternoon, prior to Mincha.
