The Early Intervention Program (EIP) is a public program for children under the age of three who are either suspected of having or at risk for developmental delays or disabilities. Potentially eligible children must be referred to the county program (Rockland County, 845-364-2032) to receive EIP services. EIP is funded

by New York State and county governments. All EIP services are provided at no cost to parents. Health insurance may be used for approved services. It is almost 26 years to the day since my husband and I moved to Monsey, just weeks before the birth of our second child. While I really do my best to bake my own challah as often as possible, we all have those weeks where there just aren’t enough hours in the day. As Daughter Number Two made her debut, life became even more hectic and visions of homemade challah became an impossible dream, at least for a while. Looking for a solution during those weeks where baking from scratch wasn’t an option, we turned

to our friends, long-time Monsey residents, and asked them for the best challah bakery in town. The answer we were given was a single word answer: Frank’s.

Actually, it wasn’t quite a single word. We were instructed to go to Frank’s on Thursday nights, to choose our challahs from the large racks in the back of the bakery and to pop them into the freezer as soon as we got home. We did as we were told and were amazed to find that those beautiful challahs still had that fresh, out-of-theoven taste when they were retrieved from the freezer weeks, or even months later.

to bake challahs that were so good and kept so well, and sell them at such reasonable prices? To be honest, even all these years later, I still have no idea.

A family owned business for over 50 years, started by Mrs. Breindel Frank, the bakery first opened in 1965 in New Square, moving to Main Street in Monsey in the 1970s.

While the sign out front read “Monsey Kosher Bake Shop,” that name was essentially ignored by locals who simply referred to the bakery as Frank’s. An integral part of the Monsey landscape, with its large white cardboard mockup of a wedding cake sitting in the display window

facing Main Street for as long as I can remember, the aroma that wafted out of the low brick building was impossible to resist. Although Frank’s heavenly challahs may have drawn customers by the hundreds before Shabbos, the bakery cases were continuously lined with tempting treats including chocolate glazed rainbow cake, row after row of gorgeous cookies and a seemingly never ending supply of creamy cakes. Their rye bread was legendary, with a crispy crust and an impossibly soft center, drawing hungry visitors like a magnet.

“It was a very nice, warm place,” granddaughter Ruchy Ungar told The Monsey View.

FAREWELL TO FRANK’S

I read the article in last week’s Monsey View about Frank’s Bakery with nostalgia. Sandy Eller captured the essence of the bakery with her heartwarming words.

Growing up, Frank’s was such an integral part of our household that every Shabbos, we would wait with bated breath as my father would unpack the bag he had brought home from there.

The heavenly seven layer cakes, frothed with pure goodness, the other cream cakes, and most of all the sugar cookies, affectionately called “Thank you cookies” in our home, since that’s what the box read, enhanced our Shabbos each week.

This loss in Monsey will be keenly felt.

As the the instability of the economy continues to adversely effect the country, the company that Chaim worked for found it necessary to downsize in order to stay afloat. Sadly, they had no choice but to terminate his employment. Soon therea er, Chaim began to develop a sense of desperation as his savings account was almost depleted. He had exhausted all his options in terms of finding suitable employment, but it was to no avail.

One day Chaim's cousin had suggested that he contact Kollel Chatzos as a zechus for him to find a job that could sustain his family.

REVISITING OLD MONSEY

I would like to thank you for the coverage of the rich history of our community. It transported me to that wonderful time and brought back fond memories of the baalei chesed from whose services I personally benefitted. Brocha Miller’s story about the integrity she confronted with a local taxi company reminded me of another time when a taxi driver taught me a lesson.

I was once waiting for my ride to pick me up in front of Shoppers’ Haven. It was a rainy day, and I was contemplating the purchases I’d made. Barely seeing straight through the haze of my fatigue, I suddenly looked up when I heard the driver of a cab yelling out of his window, “Hey, wait!”

I looked worriedly at the woman to whom the shout was directed, who was juggling bags, a baby, and trying to pry a shopping cart free with her elbow and foot.

The driver motioned to her again and was out in a jiffy, pulling the wagons apart and holding it for her to take.

I had the grace to blush - and next time around, I learned to be the one to offer help!

A MOTHER’S PET PEEVE

There’s something that I just don’t understand no matter how hard I try. It’s the mountains of homework that schoolgirls come home with on a daily basis. After spending hours upon hours in school, why do they have to spend their remaining hours, when they should be unwinding, doing yet more work? Perhaps, for high school girls, this isn’t so bad, but for the little ones that go to sleep only two or three hours after they come home — it’s very disheartening.

With supper, baths, and homework — when is there time to play? Perhaps the schools out there can consider cutting down the homework schedule to only once or at most, twice a week, because after all, shouldn’t our kids have time to just be kids?

What’s So Bad About GMOs? Two Big Reasons to Avoid Them Once a food has been genetically modified it is no longer in its natural form, and thus can be detrimental to your health— which is a major reason why it is so important to steer clear of GMOs. The only way to really know whether a specific food item has been genetically modified is to check the label.

Many non-GMO products have a special “Non-GMO Project Verified” seal.

Almost every organic food item will have that label too. If a company knows for a fact that they didn’t use GMOs in their product, they can include that on their packaging. The label will usually say “Non-GMO ingredients used,” which is a step in the right direction, although it can also be misleading. Without laboratory testing, the statement may not be entirely accurate, but it’s a good place to start if you are new to the subject and want to take things step by step. (Note that if you or anyone in your family is suffering from a

By design, genetically modified seeds require the heavy use of toxic pesticides and herbicides. While some manufacturers anticipated that pesticide use would decrease over time, it has only increased, according to a peer-reviewed study from 2012.

avoiding GMO products of all kinds. GMO foods are unhealthy for anyone, but when you exhibit certain symptoms, your body is clearly telling you to keep away from those products that are the most harmful. Some people even say it’s a blessing to know that if they consume GMO products, their body will react right away with hives, itching or stomach problems. If the consequences are serious, people are more likely to be careful and avoid ingesting genetically modified foods. However, serious reactions like that are a great way to become diligent about steering clear of GMOs, additives, artificial coloring and excitotoxins (more on that in the next article) in general. In fact, many clients tell me they wish they got a horrible itch or rash each time they overate or ate the wrong things. I believe that the inside of the body definitely reacts when you overeat, either as a physical or an emotional response. Guilt, for example, is a reaction and stresses you out, having a real impact on your physical health.

THE BOTTOM LINE FOR YOU: For the sake of your health, I’d recommend avoiding the

foods listed below. Some people find it hard or too exhausting to read every single ingredient on a label, so they would rather go with a verified non-GMO seal on the product. I would advise you to choose whichever method is easier for you. (And believe me, I know – neither one is easy.)

These five foods are genetically modified products. If it’s too difficult for you to buy foods with the non-GMO verified label, start by paying more attention to the specific crops you should avoid: Canola, corn, soy, cotton and sugar beets.

You will be amazed at how many foods you eat have some form of corn, soy, sugar beet and cottonseed oil. Before you become frantic though, remember, your body does have antibodies to fight off toxins— however, the question is how much? How

many? And how long before a body doesn’t have the strength to fight anymore?

That’s when you’ll hear people saying “Something is wrong lately; I’m not feeling so great. I really feel ready to change the way I eat”.

If you can start by avoiding soy, and canola oil (even if you only eliminate it from your own kitchen) that’s a huge step up the ladder!

Is change easy? No! But will it be worth your while? I really think so!

The Cohens* were stretched to their limit financially. When their youngest daughter turned three, it was time to enroll her in school. The school agreed to accept her at a tuition of $225 per month. The parents were worried. They did not have $225 a month left over in their budget.

They had no idea from where they would get the additional money, yet they knew that providing their child with a proper chinuch was not negotiable.

They signed the tuition agreement. Soon after, Mr. Cohen received an unexpected pay raise of $250, which was $25 more than the tuition. Amazed at the nes, they wondered why there was an extra $25. Then they realized: gas money. The school district did not provide busing for children below the age of five. Hashem had taken every expense into consideration.

Parshas Teruma details the building of the Mishkan and its keilim. We see that Hashem asked Moshe Rabbeinu and Klal Yisrael to do certain tasks for the Mishkan that were physically impossible to complete.

Moshe was physically unable to make the menorah. Rashi says that Hashem told Moshe to throw the gold into the fire, and the menorah formed itself (Shemos 25:31). The Mishkan was supposed to be portable, yet the

aron was too heavy to be carried, and the wallboards of the Mishkan were too heavy to be lifted into place. Regarding the wallboards, Rashi explains that Hashem instructed Moshe to extend his hand to the boards as if to lift them, and the boards stood up on their own (Shemos 39:33). As for the aron, the Gemara (Sota 35a) explains that

Many people are aware that success in gashmius is a gift from Hashem, but they do not realize that this is true in ruchnius as well. We are not responsible for the outcome of our efforts, even in ruchnius. We are only responsible for the choices we make and our hishtadlus, but the outcome is always in Hashem’s hands alone. It says in Pirkei Avos 2:16, “It is not incumbent upon you to finish the

task, but neither are you free to absolve yourself from it.”

We see throughout the Torah that when people stretched themselves beyond their nature to do what was right, Hashem helped them in ways that were beyond natural. It would be impossible for the b’nei Yisroel to walk or swim through the yam suf with their babies, the elderly, and their possessions, yet Nachshon ben Aminadav understood that trying was what Hashem expected. When he reached the point at which he would drown, Hashem split the sea. When Basya reached out her hand to save the baby Moshe, there was no way she could have reached him. But she reached out anyway. She did as much as she was able, and Hashem granted her success.

It was no more a miracle that the aron carried the men than it is for us to lift a glass to drink. In both cases, a person does hishtadlus and Hashem brings about the result. The difference is in the level of expectation. When a miracle occurs so often that it becomes an expectation, we call it “nature.”

To raise a glass is “natural,” but for the aron to carry people is a “miracle.” Through the numerous wonders of the Mishkan, the illusory boundary between

nature and miracle was partly lifted.

We say Hashem is the “master” of nature, but in reality there is no nature — there is only Hashem. We allow ourselves to be blinded by obstacles in life, and we forget that Hashem can truly do anything — such as provide the raise to Mr. Cohen at just the right time, in just the right amount. We simply have to do our hishtadlus and place our trust in Hashem.

us, and it can often feel as though we are asked to do the impossible. We raise families that are larger than average in America, we buy groceries at prices that are higher than in the non-kosher stores, we pay tuition rather than receive free public education, and we must marry off our children — and yet, our communities are thriving. The burden of accomplishment is not on our shoulders, so we can relax in that sense — but we cannot relax our efforts. May I use a scoop on Shabbos to mold ice cream, or mashed eggs in a certain shape?

It is not permitted to use a scoop to mold ice cream or other food items when one intends to specifically retain the shape for a while.

It is, however, muttar to scoop mashed eggs or liver, as long as one does not tightly squash the food into the scoop.

Take It All Into Account Building a Business From The Bottom Up - Part 3

S Corporations Small businesses may choose to be considered an S corporation for IRS tax purposes. S corporations are different from traditional C corporations in the way that they are taxed.

Their corporate income and losses pass directly through to their shareholders for tax purposes, avoiding double taxation on the corporate level. Note that although an S corporation does not pay taxes, it still needs to report its income and losses on a corporate return. Much like in a partnership, shareholders of the S corporation report their share of income and losses on their personal tax returns and pay their individual income tax rates.

This feature makes an S corporation a very appealing choice for startup companies that usually don’t see profit in the early stages. Whereas C corporation shareholders don’t have any tax benefit from operating losses, shareholders of an S corporation can utilize these losses to offset income from their other personal sources.

Note however, that this tax advantage is not available for everyone.

Shareholders must actively participate in the corporation’s operations.

To show material participation, one must work at least 500 hours per year for the business, or at least 100 hours of work if no other shareholder puts in more time than that. In the case you cannot prove active participation in the business, you may be

considered a passive investor and be disallowed to offset losses against other income.

Businesses occasionally wish to retain earnings for future growth. Instead of distributing company earnings to shareholders, management may choose to keep earnings for future investment activities such as buying new machinery, equipment, and buildings. Unlike C corporations that may accumulate earnings from year to year in the business tax-free, S corporations cannot retain earnings in the business after year’s end in order to avoid paying taxes. For IRS reporting purposes, all earnings of an S corporation automatically pass through to the shareholders and are taxed immediately on the individual level.

employees of an S corporation are required to take out as wages reasonable compensation for services provided before dividends are paid out.

The IRS is aware of S corporation’s tactics to pay employees modest salaries and inflate earnings with the intention of reducing employment taxes. If compensation is found as understated, compared to pay rates in similar positions, the IRS may re-

classify dividend earnings that a company has distributed to its shareholders as wages and tax them accordingly.

Note that some requirements must be met in order to qualify for S corporation status. The S corporation must have less than 100 shareholders. All shareholders must be U.S. residents. An S corporation cannot have more than one class of stock. Finally, all shareholders must elect to be considered an S Corporation.

LLC (Limited Liability Company) The choice of an LLC (Limited Liability Company), first introduced in 1977, became increasingly popular and is now allowed in all states. It is a blend of a corporation and a partnership where you can have the best of both worlds. Depending on the election, the IRS will treat an LLC as a partnership, a corporation, or disregard it as an entity. In the latter case, one will file the LLC’s income and losses on their 1040 personal return on schedule C. An LLC is in numerous ways more attractive than other entities. It beats a sole proprietorship in such that although it can be owned by one person, it also enjoys personal

protection. It has more flexibility than any type of partnership.

Partners in a limited partnership can lose their protection if they show participation in management of the partnership. On the other hand, members of a LLC don’t have such restrictions.

While S corporations must allocate income and expenses in proportion of their ownership, LLCs may share them disproportionality. When compared to a C corporation, an LLC is not a taxpaying entity and does not pay taxes until it passes earnings to its members. All this explains why LLCs are so popular.

When not to consider an LLC? If your goals are to grow the company with public investors, the LLC is not for you. Since an

LLC can never go public, it has a much harder time to raise capital through outside investors.

Investors usually prefer the simplicity of owning stock in a C corporation instead of having to deal with the added complexity of becoming a member/partner in your LLC. A C corporation would be a smarter choice.

As you can see, the one-sizefits-all approach does not work when it comes to incorporating. The type of business structure that will best work for you largely depends on your circumstances, priorities, short-term and long-term goals. So what we can tell you is: carefully evaluate what your key concerns are, and how they will impact you as a future business owner.

The doorbell pealed through the house, and Sara could hear Elimelech scraping his chair back and shuffling his Gemara closed. She knew he was lovingly caressing the sefer, grazing it with a kiss, and replacing it on its exact spot on the shelf. He’d probably do the same to each of the seforim piled all over his desk, as he did every night before retiring.

In the meantime, she needed to open the door, because the stranger — Yaakov Kasten, his business card read — was already knocking.

“Come in,” she called from the top of the stairs. He pushed open the door, a bit abruptly and too hard, after he’d tried opening it gently without luck. To Sara, applying the gentle pressure the door required was second nature. “Welcome,” she said quickly, to ease him out of his awkward stance of bending over the doorknob, now too far away to hold onto and still keep his dignity.

“What a door,” he laughed. He straightened, unprompted, looked to the left and to the right, and chose the dining room. Sara followed. Elimelech, now emerged from the basement, followed her.

“I’d like to buy your house.”

No preamble. Just like that.

Sara gasped. “Buy our house?” Elimelech’s mouth fell open.

“Yes. This street is becoming a development.” He moved his hand along an invisible line, indicating an entire strip of houses along a street. “And this lot is part of the plans.”

“This lot?” Elimelech asked, and Sara felt exposed, as if her house was invisible, and Mr. Kasten could see right through the walls, the windows, the rooms, right to all their family situations. As if nothing about their home was important but the earth beneath their feet, and the location, which could all be pulled from under them like a slippery rug on parquet, to build something else, something better, while the family tumbled to the ground.

“Our house isn’t for sale,” Sara said, incredulous.

“It wasn’t. But you might want to cons i d e r this.” He sat

down, and opened a leather folder, one half a tablet, thin as paper, sharp and silver edged, and the other, a pad. He slipped one sheet of paper out.

Sara’s eyes quickly shifted to the number — 432k. When they had moved in, they had put down $156,000. She sat down. Shook her head. Tried to clear the tears that mysteriously, suddenly sprang to her eyes, to her throat, making her head ache.

It was a lot of money. Anyone, not only she with her quick mind for numbers, could see this was an offer too good to refuse. But, “Our house is not for sale,” she said. “Thank you.”

Mr. Kasten nodded. “I understand it’s hard to pick up and move. You’ve put down roots here. So I’m willing to offer you this.” He took out another sheet of paper. “ A down payment. The difference of up to $500,000, and you get to put it down on another house, in a more beautiful location. There’s tons of stuff out now in Airmont, Chestnut.”

Sara wondered what was on the sheet of paper behind this one. If she refused again, would he pull out another paper with an even better offer?

“I’ll be honest with you. I’m paying you more than your house is worth. Call in any house inspector if you ever want to sell this old shoe, and he won’t get past the door. I’m doing it because, hon-

Sara found her anger rising like a dawn mist.

He thought that if he waved enough candy before their eyes, he could pluck them from their home, and just drop them elsewhere, as if they were the pieces on a Monopoly board, moved around because he wanted real estate.

“We’re not moving. We’re not selling right now,” she said, again.

“What does sweeten the deal mean?” Elimelech wanted to know. He was rolling up his sleeves, a sure sign he was digesting this offer.

Mr. Kasten smiled. “Let’s just say you won’t regret this deal. At some point in the future, you might wake up and say, ‘Let’s sell this old place.’

And you’ll have to deal with difficult agents and pounding headaches. And you’ll find that the market value has gone down, due to fluctuations, but also because this street will already be developed, and the landscape has changed. You make a deal now, sell while it’s hot, and you know you’re good.”

Sara’s eyes narrowed considerably. If a street is developed, the value goes up. Unless… was he saying he planned to change the face of this entire

Elimelech’s head furrowed deeply to the table, perusing the document. Mr. Kasten looked at Sara. Sara stared back. “Money.

It’s the only thing that—” Then she thought better of it, thought better of allowing her rage, her indignation, her sense of righteousness at the streets that had been wrested away from dedicated Monsey people, to spill over into her interactions.

“We’re not selling,” she said again, and she left the dining room and walked to the laundry room, where she hoped to find her paperwork— but who was she kidding— she couldn’t do work now with her head filled with the fumes and smoke of hatred. The papers weren’t there.

She had inadvertently left them on the dining room table, within reach of that money-hungry young man who thought he could just relocate them.

“Let’s talk man to man,” Yaakov Kasten was saying, and Elimelech sat down, and asked question after question while Sara ran the bath, got ready for bed, got into bed, fisted her hands on top of her pillow, and tried to fall asleep over the rocks of hard anger that roiled in her.

The night table clock said 12:03 a.m. when she heard the front door click closed. It read

12:05 when she joined Elimelech in the living room.

Sara looked at him, a question in her eyes. “He was sincere,” Elimelech said. “Monsey is changing. We can be part of that change in our small way by cashing in. That’s how we take advantage, instead of resenting the situation.”

Sara remained tight-jawed.

“Buying the billion dollar Powerball was stupid compared to selling a house we bought for less than two, for a full five.

Think of it as an investment.”

So Elimelech was convinced.

Sara felt alone, completely alone in this. Manipulated, forced away from the safety of her own home, with no anchoring person to keep her in place.

“You promised me,” she said, and now she buried her face in her hands, and blotted out her furious anger, her powerless feeling, her memories, her pain.

“It’s true. I did promise you,” Elimelech conceded. “I’m not going to go back on it, but I just wish you would. You’re the numbers person in this family. Think about it. Marrying off Bracha Esther. Seminary. Chaim Elazar. Yeshivah. The girls, all growing up. And here we have all this money falling into our laps. And all we have to do for it, as far as work goes, is relocate.

Within Monsey. I just don’t understand where you’re coming from.”

“It’s a game. It’s all a game.

A numbers game. This same yungerman who’s paying an unreasonable amount for our house, is the same

as those people driving up prices in Airmont and other outlying neighborhoods. Don’t think we can find a house in any place before New Jersey for 400. Prices are shooting up because people like these are paying exorbitant amounts, using them as summer homes, and leaving people like us, simple people who just want to have homes for ourselves and our children, to scramble for shelter.”

“Why does that bother you if we’re on the winning team?”

She couldn’t explain. It had something to do with chess pieces, and being a pawn, and losing if she played to win, and competing against herself and her own community and her children’s future, but she couldn’t babble it all out. What she could do was play her own game. Heading toward her bedroom, a counter offense already bubbled in her head, and she fell asleep with the queen in her hand, deliberately fingering its ridged crown as she contemplated her next move.

RIPPLES She sat in the one of those ubiquitous rear-facing seats in the back of the bus. I also sat in the back, so I saw her clearly. She was absolutely lovely. Dark, smooth skin, with just a trace of lip gloss; she clearly didn’t need more than that. She was young, perhaps twenty-five, or thirty. She wore a pastel flowing scarf, tied gracefully around her head, the ends trailing softly onto her shoulders. Perhaps her absolute loveliness was highlighted

I wanted to touch a bit of that magnificence and connection. by the way the sun shone on her through the bus window, creating a sort of halo of light around her face. Her lips moved calmly, confidently, silently. She was davening.

She was connecting.

When I got on the bus every morning for my fifteen-minute journey to work, I was usually so harried from the entire morning routine of getting my kids off to cheder and the babysitter, that I plopped into the nearest seat and blanked out. I just stared vacantly out of the window, not even noticing the passing scenery; recovering from my stressful morning and gearing up for another day at my office job.

couldn’t stop staring. She was so stunning and ethereal and I wanted to be like that— to look like her. I wanted to touch a bit of that magnificence and connection. And so the next morning, (admittedly more from a sense of vanity than of desire to connect to Hashem) I tucked my trusty Artscroll siddur that carried me through High School and Seminary— but got frightfully little use these days in all the busyness— into my pocketbook.

I davened Birchos haShachar, Shema, and a little extra that morning. The next day, realizing that I had more time than I had anticipated, I continued on to parts of Pesukei D’Zimra. I then got off the bus at the stop near my office and prayed Shmonei Esrei there. It was thrilling to reconnect with my siddur, and even more exhilarating to think that I could actually fit in a complete (albeit abridged) Shacharis into my morning routine. I continued this for a few weeks until it tapered off, but those few weeks of tefillah stayed with me, as did the image of that beautiful woman connecting to her Creator.

I don’t think I ever saw her again.

When eventually I took on a teaching job, one of the subjects I taught was Tefillah, and I often thought of her. Whenever I find the time to daven after my kids are off to school, I feel beautiful. I connect to that time when I glimpsed the face of an angel.

I once heard Rabbi Pesach Krohn tell a story of a young man who did not appear to be observant, who walked into a shul in Texas and handed the Rabbi a large donation.

You know the old cliché about pebbles in the water causing endless ripples? She may not know of the impact she had on me. But like everwidening circles, her shining example continues to inspire me. And, hopefully, you as well.

The bakery owner directed him to the Orthodox shul, which the inspired young man made many donations to over time— all in the merit of a man whose name he didn’t even know.

Rabbi Krohn, in relating this story, goes one step further. He has us imagine this Yerushalmi gentleman arriving in Shamayim after 120 years, and being told that he has the tremendous z’chus of helping a shul in Texas. Magic with Gadgets When school is out, mommies are in. Being proactive is a great way to enjoy a day with the kids.

Since “bored and hungry” are the most common terms which my kids refer to when locked into the house on a snow day, I created and tweaked the following recipes using modern-day gadgets for anything but the purpose they were created for.

This was true fun entertainment with delicious results.

I hope your family enjoys it as much as mine did.

Stock up on ingredients for any or all of these recipes, and you’ll be looking forward to snow vacation.

Make sure there’s adult supervision when any of the gadgets are used!

COOKIE S’MORE POPS

1 package chocolate fudge cookies marshmallow cream

peanut putter ground coconut chocolate chips

Spread a layer of peanut butter on half of the cookies, and a layer of marshmallow fluff on the other half.

Sprinkle coconut onto the peanut butter layer and chocolate chips onto the marshmallow fluff.

Form a sandwich, using one of each.

Place sandwiches in parchment bag or in silver foil. (The parchment bags don’t retain heat, making it easier to handle.)

Set iron to highest heat setting.

Iron the wrapped sandwich for approximately 1 ½ to 2 minutes per side.

Ever wondered where the word “s’more” comes from? I imaging that it’s called this way because everyone always wants s’more.

Remove from wrapper and stick in a pop stick for an exciting treat!

Yields approximately 20 triangles.

I was lucky to have my teenage daughter’s classmates over while creating these delectable pancakes. I did a taste test on all thirteen of them, with rave reviews!

Make sure your sandwich maker is thoroughly cleaned, so that they shouldn’t pick up a lingering pizza flavor.

Pancake batter: 2 eggs 2 c. flour 1 c. milk 4 tsp. baking powder 3 oz. oil ½ tsp. kosher salt ½ c. sugar

Filling: 4 oz. cream cheese 1 tsp vanilla sugar 1 good quality milk chocolate

Mix all batter ingredients until well combined.

Mix cream cheese with vanilla sugar and break chocolate bar into approximately 20 pieces.

Grease the surface of the sandwich maker and heat.

Pour in one ounce of batter into each section.

Place ½ tsp. cream cheese and 1 piece of chocolate into the center of the batter. Smooth batter with a spoon to conceal filling.

Cook approximately 3 minutes

I was sure that this would be a 1-23 creation, but boy was I wrong.

A regular potato latke batter just didn’t do well in the waffle maker.

Only after trying several times, did I realize that the addition of flour enabled the waffle to keep its shape. The end result was this dense and savory potato waffle.

5 loose potatoes 1 small purple onion 1/3 cup flour 3 eggs

Finely chop potatoes, onion, and eggs in food processor.

Add rest of ingredients.

Heat waffle maker and spray with oil.

Cook for 2-3 minutes.

Over the past week, it became apparent that for the remaining candidates, the race has become “real.” As more candidates withdraw and the numbers get tighter, the rhetoric has gotten far more aggressive. The candidates have come out swinging, forcefully attacking each other’s records and positions.

Coming off of Monday’s Iowa Caucuses, Donald Trump attacked Ted Cruz saying he won the election fraudulently. His basis: On Monday, Ben Carson’s campaign had announced that the candidate would not be heading to New Hampshire, but instead would be returning to Florida. Many in

But of course, as indicated last week in Iowa, the people of New Hampshire might still surprise us.

Senator with little experience. The argued that he was robotic, sticking to the talking points, and doesn’t have the mettle to be the President of the United States. Rubio hit back by saying that he was voicing what he believed in and would repeat it.

On the Democratic side — because of the paperthin margin of Hillary Clinton’s win, as well as the fact that six separate precincts were won by Hillary via coin toss — the Sanders campaign asked for a recount. So far the numbers still have Hillary winning, but the margin has drawn even closer, within .25 of a percent.

On Tuesday, February 3rd, Senator Rand Paul announced that he was withdrawing from the race, saying, “Although today I will suspend my campaign for President, the fight is far from over.

I will continue to carry the torch for Liberty in the United States Senate and I look forward to earning the privilege to represent the people of Kentucky for another term.”

On Wednesday, February 4th, former Senator Rick Santorum followed suit, announcing that he would leave the race and that he was endorsing POLLS

Going into this primary election, the polls indicate that Donald Trump has a comfortable lead and will come in at first place. The contest seems to be about who will get second place, with the polls being vastly contradictory. Over the last week, Marco Rubio increased his numbers steadily, but that appears to have halted after the debate. John Kasich, who has been doing well in New Hampshire all along had fluctuating numbers, with some polls giving him a strong second, while others placed him at third or even farther behind. Bush and Cruz seem to have a fighting chance, while the rest have been polling in the single digits only. But of course, as indicated last week in Iowa, the people of New Hampshire might still surprise us. Follow us next week for results and analyses.

There’s a lot of poetry about

the peace of Shabbos after candle-lighting. Jewish mothers await the special aura, the inspiration, the davening. The chance to collapse on the couch and release the week’s tension.

To have ultimate quality time, when nothing else in the world beckons.

From all of the above, the only factor that applies to me is the candle-lighting. And I can only afford to close my eyes for the thirty seconds it takes to make the brachah— and then I assess what crisis is waiting to happen. Usually, Nachman starts opening the wine bottle. If I indulge in another six seconds of closed-eyes-ecstasy, it is too late.

After that, there is no aura, inspiration, or formal davening. There’s no collapsing on the couch, no chance for quality time. It’s straight outside to the awe of the park.

In the mini park with the lone swing set I’m lucky to have right outside our house, we spend the hour-and-a-half until Tatty comes home.

I push Nachman and Chavy on the swings, my eyes and thoughts drifting to other places. I watch teenagers chatting and laughing in pairs. They are so free. I, baruch Hashem, have a family of my own and I am blessed.

But I am trapped.

Even here, in the park, I’m trapped…

Nachman’s had enough of the swings. I groan.

“Nachman!” I grab him and try to hold him tight. Maybe I can do this until Aryeh comes home… could laugh more.

I forget to laugh sometimes. I am so busy running after Nachman that I fail to notice the comedy in it. I, his mother, twenty-two years his senior, am at the mercy of a two-year-old.

Nachman has more energy than his mother, that’s for sure. Do I have energy for him?

It’s a good question.

Nachman climbs up my neighbor’s car and in an instant, is jumping on its roof. I run, ordering him down, but he laughs.

“Nachman!”

“NACHMAN!” But Nachman just jumps and laughs. What do I do - climb onto the car, and pull him down?

Itty, my neighbor and friend, walks by. Instead of stopping to chat, she stops and stares. Then she turns to me.

“Um, Chaya Liba—“ “Yeah, Nachman’s climbing on the car.”

She draws her eyebrows together, peering at me.

And that is when I know that while she lives just across the street, she lives in a different world.

And I know that I am utterly, totally alone.

“So maybe just—“ “Tell him to come down? It doesn’t work.”

“So just walk away from here.”

Nachman will climb up any car he sees.

I continue the conversation in my mind: Then why don’t you just go home?

Because either Nachman will throw the dollhouse at the baby, or he’ll stick his hands into the candles.

“Nachman! Please…come down already! The—the Tatty doesn’t let!” I’m begging my two-year-old, not ordering. I know I sound weak, but I’m so unconvinced of my power that I almost can’t help it.

The audience gets larger. A gruff voice sounds utterly close, and for a second I almost explode in joy that my

husband’s come home and he’ll help me restrain Nachman.

But it isn’t.

“Don’t tell him the Tatty doesn’t let; say it’s muktzeh.” Our neighbor Mr. Meyers walks on before I can register what he’d said.

Advice: Welcome the golden opportunity to instill Yiddishkeit in the child.

I look from Itty to Mr. Meyer’s retreating shadow and close my eyes for a second. Where are these people living???

I open my eyes and they are wet.

“Nachman!” I grab him and try to hold him tight. Maybe I can do this until Aryeh comes home…

But Nachman flings off my glasses and sends them skidding down the sidewalk. He jumps from my arms and runs after them. Oh, good, at least he’ll give them back to me! Well, he has other plans. He picks up the glasses and aims them farther down the block. I run after my glasses half a block down and pick up the chipped thing, while holding the baby in my arms and squeezing Nachman’s hand together with the glasses until my palm hurts.

He can’t run away from me again.

I trudge back toward our house, not bothering to hide the tears escaping from my eyes. I’m too busy looking all around for the miraculous sight of Aryeh.

Finally, Aryeh rescues me and hoists Nachman onto his shoulders.

In the house across the street, in the moment before I realize I shouldn’t be looking into others’ windows (whose curtains are open a tad too wide), I spot Itty sitting on her couch, reading.

Sitting. Reading.

I’m breathless for a moment.

Do people really do that?

Pain slices through my chest.

Please, Hashem, make that miracle happen to me one day, too.

I force my lips into a smile, just for myself.

I believe.

Attention, Please!

What’s ADHD?

Young children can be an active bunch. So how can you tell if your energetic cutie has ADHD? Usually, the unruly behavior is extreme. These are the children that are “running, jumping, climbing on everything; they can’t sit still, they talk all the time,” says Steven Cuffe, MD. “They’re often described as ‘on the go’ or ‘driven by a motor.’”

ADHD is a diagnosis that should not be made quickly. Parents and teachers may wonder if a child who is restless or doesn’t usually pay attention may possibly have ADHD. However, this is a specific diagnosis which should be made by a trained professional with careful testing, observation, and parent/teacher interviewing over time.

According to the American Psychiatric Association, to be diagnosed with ADHD one must present at least six symptoms of inattention or hyperactivity-impulsivity. Some of these symptoms must be present before the age of seven and cause impairment in at least two settings. There must be clear, significant impairment in social, academic, or occupational functioning. While you may see warning signs early on, the diagnosis usually comes a little later. You can detect and begin improving behavior problems as early as 8 months.

WHAT ARE COMMON SYMPTOMS OF ADHD IN CHILDREN? • unprovoked aggression and destructiveness • inability to sit still for calm activities like eating and having books read to them • excessive talking and noise-making • running around from toy to toy, constantly in motion • trouble completing tasks before getting bored • difficulty listening, as a result of distraction • problems following instructions and processing information Inattention is a key sign of ADHD. However, “Attention span has to be contextualized,” says Neal Rojas, M.D. “Are we talking about the first thing in the morning, the middle of day, before naptime, before bedtime? I tell [parents] that they will see a variation throughout the day. Attention span is elastic.”

tract your child, but s/he can usually attend for one minute or a little longer to a single toy or activity.

16 – 19 months Notice a minimal increase in attention to 2-3 minutes.

20 – 24 months Your child is easily distracted by sounds, but can stay attentive to an activity for 3-6 minutes.

25 – 36 months Attention span is still limited, at 5-8 minutes.

3 – 4 years A nice improvement in concentration, to 8-10 minutes.

5 years Your child can focus on an interesting activity for 10 -15 minutes. A small group of children can work or play together without interruption for 10-25 minutes.

6-years Your child may remain interested in something for as much as 30 minutes.

Medication is usually suggested for relief of ADHD, especially in severe cases. However, medication alone is not the simple answer.

Is it possible for laymen to help hyperactive behaviors?

Consulting with a professional to work out a specific plan based on your child’s needs is always wise. Here are some general ideas that work.

Firstly, accept the fact that your child is intrinsically active and energetic. The hyperactivity is not intentional. Don’t ex-

pect to eliminate it, but merely to bring it under control.

Provide a place to release energy; it can’t be stored. Daily activities such as running, sports, and long walks are good outlets.

Encourage your child to play with one toy at a time, and keep the rest out of sight. This can increase the amount of time s/he’ll play with one object.

Household routines are especially vital for a hyperactive child. Keep the times for wakeup, meals, and bedtime as regular as possible. ADHD symptoms are made worse by sleep deprivation and hunger. Predictable daily events help your child’s responses become more predictable. Try to keep your environment relatively quiet to encourage thinking, listening, and reading.

Maintain firm discipline. Hy-

peractive children are unquestionably difficult to manage.

Rules should be formulated mainly to prevent harm to your child and to others. Aggressive behavior, such as biting, hitting, and pushing, should not be accepted as the norm. However, you can’t expect your child to stay still. Enforce a few important rules and add others at your child’s pace.

Don’t forget, encouraging attentive behavior is key in preparation for school. Increased attention span and persistence can be taught at home. Don’t expect teachers to change children. Set aside several brief periods each day to teach listening skills by reading to youngsters. Start with picture books, and progress to stories. Teach games, and increase the difficulty by working up to puzzles, card and board games.

Matching pictures is another excellent way to build concentration span. Don’t forget to praise your child as you go along. This process is slow but invaluable.

Remember, give attention to get attention. And time works wonders!

NEXT WEEK my 6-inch heeled shoe, but my trusty spray bottle with my own special mixture, the one that my household fondly calls the PraySH (which in technical words means Pray, Spray and Hope it’ll become clean) that was patiently sitting undisturbed next to my bed. Earlier that day my 4-year-old apparently thought my bedside was designated for Expo marker art. So before turning in for the night, I scrubbed away — and after 16 minutes finally admitted defeat. I figured I’d continue in the morning with Ajax, St. Moritz, Soft Scrub and an army of others, but was too exhausted to run down and return the spray to its designated place. So there I was, grabbing hold of my trusty PraySH bottle in lieu of pepper spray…

gleaming table eating the longawaited marror, at the same time. The question remains, however, (no, it’s not one of the four questions, though it might qualify for the fifth) how some sit down to matzoh with eyes actually open, while others have to be woken from their gentle snoring in time for shulchan orech.

The good news is that with a little planning ahead, a bit of humor, lots of dancing with the broom and Chazak’s number on speed dial, all of you can arrive to the seder in a calm frame of mind, relaxed—and still be wide awake to steal the afikomen.

In my (not biased at all) opinion, a home where the closets are organized from the inside out — y’know, not just shoving the closet doors closed with the help of your 6’2” son— is a home where calmness permeates, where the mere word “Pesach” puts a smile on your face, and makes you appreciate the beautiful parts of yom tov and enjoy the cleaning process too!

In the coming weeks we will tackle each room of your humble abode. Whether you have a mansion, colonial, split level, high ranch, semi-attached, 4, 5, or 6 bedroom apartment— or

anything that constitutes a warm bed and a working oven— you will gain insight into how to get your home decluttered and not only Pesach-ready, but keep it orderly for the rest of the year, as well.

Oh, I’m sorry. There I was getting distracted from my cleaning again. What had woken me? Just my 4-year-old having a midnight Expo marker extravaganza in my newly painted bathroom. Needless to say, my PraySH shpritz, uh, pepper spray, wasn’t the answer...

MONOPOLY • During the Great Depression, when cash was scarce, Charles Darrow, an out-of-work engineer designed a game in which players compete for massive riches. He never imagined that Monopoly would become the best-selling board game of all time!

• But not all men have the freedom to dream of better and more lucrative days. In communist Cuba, Fidel Castro banned Monopoly.

• Darrow first tried to sell Parker Brothers on his idea, but it rejected the game, claiming it had 52 design errors. Undeterred, Darrow sold 5,000 handmade sets in a Philadelphia department store. Parker Brothers promptly changed its mind, and a year after rejecting it, chose to manufacture Monopoly, a move they did not regret.

• During World War II, the Nazis allowed Allied POWs (prisoners of war) to play board games sent by the British government to its imprisoned soldiers. Inside Monopoly boxes, the British government (with the cooperation of the game’s publisher), hid real banknotes among the monopoly money - and tools, compasses, metal files, and silk maps were also concealed inside the games. Many POWs escaped in this manner.

• Parker Brothers prints 30 times more Monopoly money each year than the U.S. Mint prints in real currency!

• While all real estate on the Monopoly board is named after real properties, Marvin Gardens doesn’t exist. Marven Gardens is real, but there’s a typo on the board that never got fixed.

• According to Monopoly rules, If the bank runs out of money, you’re required to print more or draw extra cash by hand. But a group of players who once ran out of money during a 161-hour marathon, didn’t have to do that. Parker Brothers sent them extra cash by plane and an armored car.

• The game’s mascot used to be named Rich Uncle Pennybags, before it was changed to Mr. Monopoly.

CHUTES AND LADDERS • The moral lesson of “Snakes and Ladders,” as it was originally called in the U.S., was that through good deeds you’ll reach the top, and when you do wrong, you will fall, but you can make your way back up! The original game had “Squares of Virtue”, such as Faith, Reliability, and Generosity, which led up, and squares of desire, like Disobedience, Vanity, and Selfishness, which led down.

• The phrase “back to square one” mostly likely originated from the game.

SCRABBLE • Originally, Scrabble was called “Lexico.”

• If you’re ever stuck with a Q, without a U, take heart. There are 84 words in the English language that include a Q without a U. • The highest-scoring word you can open with is “muzjiks” (a Russian peasant).

• In Scrabble, using all of your letters in one turn is called a Bingo.

• The inventor determined how many of each letter there should be by counting letters on the pages of popular newspapers.

• One in three American households has a Scrabble set.

• Official Scrabble tournaments use totally flat tiles so players can’t pick the letters they want by “brailing” and feeling the surface of the tiles.

TRIVIAL PURSUIT • Trivial Pursuit was created when two Canadian editors were annoyed upon finding that pieces of their Scrabble game were missing. Instead of playing Scrabble, they decided to make their own game.

• Those editors may have been brilliant and very knowledgeable, but they were not business savvy. When they first began selling Trivial Pursuit, they lost 60 dollars on each game. Each set cost them $75 to manufacture, and they sold it for $15, so that retailers could mark it up to $29.95.

• The makers of Trivial Pursuit were sued for $300,000 by an author of a trivia encyclopedia, who claimed that more than a quarter of the game’s questions had been taken from his book. How did he know? In order to catch duplicators, he had deliberately put one incorrect fact in his book which had been included in the Trivial Pursuit game. The author lost the court case on the grounds that facts cannot be copyrighted.

CHESS • In the middle ages, chess was a noble game used to learn war strategy and was thusly dubbed the “King’s Game.”

• Expert Chess players are believed to have 100,000—300,000 patterns stored in their memory.

• Talking is not permitted during a game of Chess. It’s not required to announce “check,” only “checkmate.”

• In Chess, if a player is in a truly hopeless position, it’s proper etiquette to resign rather than draw out the game.

• Why do Yidden love chess so much, and in fact, make up over half of the world’s chess champions? Talmidei chachamim are trained in the intricacies, obstacles, and thinking involved in examining a sugya from every angle. It is no wonder that a mind trained in Torah learning excels at chess! PURIM PUPPET SHOW

Forget the brown paper bags; this upscale version of a puppet show will result in giggles and fun experimentation. Simply cut the Purim characters out of hard black paper and attach each one to a pop stick or skewer. Turn off the lights and shine a flashlight on an empty wall. Place the puppets in the stream of light and act out a spooky Purim scene! Feel free to make your own characters, animals, palace, trees, etc.

When your Purim puppets get tired, try creating animal shadows using your hands and fingers. (see diagram)

Remember the old game Headache? You know, that game where the pieces went around the board and it was a headache to get them back home? Add fun to the headache by creating this ultra-deluxe version! You can make the board out of a big white tablecloth or oaktag. Then, create the game board by cutting large circles from colored paper, or you can put on a plastic smock and grab some paint brushes to paint the circles. Once the game board is ready, all you need are colorful plastic cups which can be bought in Amazing Savings or other party supplies stores.

Use a regular die or make a humongous one out of a small tissue box. Roll the die and let the game begin! Who can bring all their cups back home first?

Choosing a Real Estate Agent

by Ann Zeilingold There is so much information online, making it easier than ever to be an informed consumer when buying or selling a home. Yet the digital revolution has done little to lessen the importance of choosing the right real estate agent to work with you.

The right agent can help you buy your dream house or sell your existing home quickly. The wrong agent can botch the transaction, leaving you with egg on your face and nowhere to call home.

Despite the high stakes, many buyers and sellers give little thought to choosing an agent, whether they’re buying or selling.

When choosing an agent, get recommendations from friends and relatives, and see which agents are buying and selling the most homes in your neighborhood. Don’t be afraid to ask questions about how many listings the agent has, how many homes she has sold in your area, how often she will communicate with you – and in what format – and who she will represent in the transaction.

If you’re a seller, ask how the agent will market your home, who the target buyer is, and how he will get your home in front of those preferred buyers.

Here are five red flags to watch for when choosing a real estate agent: The agent suggests the highest price for your house.

at least three agents, who will tell you what comparable homes have sold for and how long they take to sell. The agents are all looking at the same data, so the suggested listing price should be close. Pricing a home too high at the start often means it will take longer to sell, and ultimately sell for less. “If you’re too high for the market, buyers will not even look at it because they know you’re not realistic,” says Tirtza Beer, a local Real Estate Agent with Realty Teams. “The longer your property sits on the market, the more people are going to think there’s something wrong with it.”

The agent does real estate on the side, part time. Whether you’re a buyer or seller, you want to choose an agent who is actively following the market every day. If you’re buying, you want an agent who can jump on new listings and show them to you immediately.

The agent is a relative. Unless your relative is a crackerjack full-time agent who specializes in your neighborhood, he or she is unlikely to do as good of a job as another agent. That can breed resentment, as well as derail your transaction.

The agent doesn’t know the real estate landscape in your neighborhood. Finding a neighborhood expert is especially important in areas where moving a block can raise or lower the value of a home by $100,000. An agent who specializes in a neighborhood may also be in touch with buyers who are looking for a home just like yours or sellers who haven’t put their home on

the market yet. “It’s really a very local business,” Tirtza says.

The agent is a poor negotiator or fails to keep up with details of the transaction. In many cases, the most important work of an agent is not to find the home but to make sure the sale closes. That includes making sure the buyer is preapproved for a mortgage, the home is free of liens before it goes on the market, the appraisal is accurate and issues raised by the home inspection are addressed.
