Dear Ruchy Reese, I really enjoy your articles. You must feel so privileged to be a part of the most wonderful Chaverim family! Last week I was walking on Robert Pitt Drive when I noticed an unsavory, suspicious character (to put it mildly) walking in my direction. Although he was quite far I was able to feel that he was up to no good. I tried crossing the street, but with so many oncoming cars it was nearly impossible. I continued walking, my heart pounding in fear as he came close. His hatred-filled eyes, wild hair, the suspicious look on his face, the forced nonchalant walk — everything about him screamed “trouble!” I held my breath as we passed, whispering fervently to Hashem to keep me and all of his children safe. All of a sudden, out of nowhere, a second, similar looking fellow with the same measured gait and suspicious mannerisms appeared. I was panicking; perhaps these were terrorists who’d come to check out the local community?! Although I didn’t see these two men actually DO anything, every bone in my body was screaming “DANGER!” I squelched my feelings of uneasiness and went on my way, going from store to store. It was about 1:00 pm when I first

started shopping, and by 2:30 I found myself at the grocery, checking out. It was then that I noticed another one of the people I believe now to part of the same “group.” I think other shoppers also felt the threat; some of them were staring at the man. I watched him fix a coffee and then leave. Three red flags were frantically waving in my head. But what to do? When I arrived home I enjoyed some “me time” with (of course!) The Monsey View. The first paragraph of the Chaverim article “Things That Go ‘Bump’ in The Night” hit me. I quote: “...It’s the bad vibes given off by unsavory characters; the nervousness felt when intuition whispers in one’s ear that someone is up to no good...Chaverim will always take seriously.” I reread it again and again. Wow! This was exactly how I felt, but was embarrassed to make a call for fear of being categorized as an over-imaginative woman. Who would take me seriously, after all, these guys hadn’t actually done anything — yet. My question to you is as follows: Should I call Chaverim when encountering shady characters, even though I haven’t actually seen them do anything? Obviously, we are all in Hashem’s hands and he is safeguarding us, His

P.S. I’ve noticed that a certain shopping mall has a security guard that never even looks, let alone scrutinizes, at those entering the doors, as he is too busy typing on his phone. Lately my grocery bills, which were always high, seem to be on the rise. I am far from a scrooge when it comes to food shopping, but I do think I buy within reason. Is it normal that for my family of two adults and two young children - I spend an average of $300 a week on groceries?! The letter writer in last week’s issue brought up an important issue. As a teacher, I appreciate that homework has a lot of benefits. But I find it troubling that children in the primary grades come home with such a heavy workload. Homework for young children should be kept to a minimum. Granted, their reading and dikduk need practice, but please let kids be kids, and leave time for play.

We often hear about the immune system, and how important it is that we keep it healthy and strong. I will provide a series of scenarios that will allow you to compare your immune system functioning with what should be the norm — our goal being to gain a better understanding of how your body works.
HOW DOES YOUR IMMUNE SYSTEM FUNCTION? Your body is on guard 24/7 to keep enemies — or “antigens” — away. In very simple terms, your body is constantly on the lookout for any foreign substances that try to invade the body. Viruses, bacteria, germs, and toxins are examples of antigens that the body doesn’t recognize, and that it does not want to befriend. Of all the items involved in the building of the Mishkan, more pesukim are devoted to the bigdei kehuna than to any of the keilim. The Mechilta brings that if gold is not available to make any of the keilim (other than the keruvim), then any other metal may be used as a substitute. However, no substitute may be used for any of the materials used in the creation of the bigdei kehuna. The bigdei kehuna are not merely a uniform the kohanim wear. The Rambam writes in Sefer HaMitzvos (Mitzvah Asei 33) that donning the bigdei kehuna is, in fact, one of the 248 mitzvos asei of the Torah. The Gemara (Zevachim) explains, and the Rambam paskens, that if there was a chatzitza separating between any part of the kohen’s body and any of the begadim, then the avodah was posul — something as simple as a small bandage could render the entire avodah invalid. Even more, the Minchas Chinuch in Mitzvah 99 adds that if there was a chatzitza between the kohen’s body and the begadim, then the kohen was chayev misa. If any of the kohen’s begadim were dirty, if he was missing any of the begadim, or if he wore two of any item instead of one, or if he wore any additional garments not specified — the entire

avodah was posul. The kohanim worked with great mesirus nefesh to be properly dressed at all times during the avodah. Shoes were not permitted whether the stones of the ground were hot in summer or covered with snow in winter. In winter, they were required to perform the avodah wearing only the bigdei kehuna,
The bigdei kehuna are not merely a uniform the kohanim wear. and they still had to immerse in the cold mikvah multiple times. Rabbeinu Bechaye explains that special men were appointed to watch over the kohanim to determine if any of them were growing weak. The bigdei kehuna serve many functions. They are a visible sign to Klal Yisrael that Hashem chose the kohanim for a higher role, as it says: “V’asisa vigdei kodesh... You shall make holy garments ... for honor and glory.” (Shemos 28:2) Rabbeinu
Bechaye explains that Klal Yisrael is to look to the kohanim as kings, and the regal begadim give kohanim higher stature in our eyes. The begadim also remind the kohanim themselves who they are and what their role is, as it says: “v’asu es bigdei... they shall make Aharon’s garments to sanctify him....” (Shemos 28:3) The kohen’s entire being needs to be immersed in the avodah it is not enough that his hands perform the right action if his mind is somewhere else. The Sefer HaChinuch writes that the bigdei kehuna serve as a constant reminder to the kohanim to keep their kavanah pure. In addition, wearing special clothing shows kavod for the avodah itself, just as wearing Shabbos clothing shows kavod for Shabbos, as it says: “V’asu es vigdei... l’chahano li – they shall make Aharon’s garments... that he should serve me (be a kohen to me).” (Shemos 28:3) It says in Shemos 19:6, “V’atem tihiyu li mamleches kohanim v’goy kadosh – And you shall be to me a kingdom of kohanim and a holy nation.” Just as Hashem separated the kohanim from the rest of Klal Yisrael to be holy and pure, and to serve as shluchim between us and Hashem, Hashem chose Klal Yisrael to be a separate, holy, pure nation, to bring Hashem’s light to this

world, and to bring hashroas haShechina. The Backbone of Any Successful Business: The Accounting System Accounting System Setup Setting up a good accounting system for your business is an important step in your journey to becoming a business owner. With a properly maintained accounting system, you will know when your bills are due and when your customers’ bills are due, with you on the receiving end. You will know how much spending money you have available in your checking account, the amount of inventory on hand, and how much you have sold during a specific period. And most importantly of all, you will hopefully know whether you are making money or losing money in this business. Your accounting system will provide you with critical financial information about the financial health of every division in your company and enable you to make better financial decisions. Clearly, a good accounting system is key to business success. An accounting system is an organized set of accounting methods, procedures, and standards established to record, classify, and summarize financial information with the purpose of enhancing business decision-making. It can be a physi-
cal set of books, accounting software installed on your business computer, or an online accounting application in cloud accounting. Although manual accounting systems, such as the traditional columnar pads, are sufficient to maintain business records, automated software packages such as QuickBooks or Sage PeachTree will save you a lot of your precious time, eliminate repetitive and tedious tasks, and minimize human error that is inevitable with manual accounting. And at yearend, you will without a doubt save substantially on accounting fees by providing your accountant with

accountants. Prices for accounting software vary greatly. Basic applications start at a few hundred dollars, or about $15 a month. Comprehensive accounting modules for large businesses may cost $500,000 or more. When choosing an accounting software package look out for the following: • How long the product has been around for. Is it reliable and proven through the test of time? • You’ll want to make sure that the software is compatible and will work well with your current applications and Microsoft Office products. • It should also have a feature to interact with your bank and automatically download transactions. • Finally, verify if the product is suitable to your specific needs. For example, QuickBooks Pro can handle up to 50 group items and 14,500 inventory items. Read the product’s overview and system requirements to make sure that it is sufficient for your company’s needs.

Cash Basis Method vs. Accrual Method After a chart of accounts is created, you will have to choose an accounting method. The options are the cash basis method or the accrual method. Here is a brief overview of the two methods without going too much into the intricate details. The main difference between the two methods is the period in which revenue and expenses are recorded. In a cash basis, a company records income and expenses in the accounting period when cash is changing hands, i.e. when cash is “paid” for goods/services or cash is
“received” for sales/services. (Cash here refers to cash, credit card transactions, and checks). This method is used by many small businesses who typically receive payment immediately at the time of a sale. In an accrual basis method, income is recorded in the accounting period when revenue is “earned,” which can be before cash is received. For example, a product is sold on December 20, 2015 and payment is not received until January of 2016. With the accrual method, sales revenue will be recorded in year 2015. Expenses are recorded when “incurred,” regardless of when the money is paid. The timing that payment is actually received or made is ignored for purposes of recognizing income or expenses. This method is used by most large businesses that frequently ship merchandise, and then send invoices after the goods have been received. The accrual method aims to match revenues to expenses and provides for a more accurate picture of a company’s profitability in an accounting period.
Chart of Accounts Setting up an accounting system starts with creating a chart of accounts. This is simply a numbered list of all accounts in a company. The chart of accounts will be segregated by asset, liability, and stockholders’ equity accounts, where every account is assigned a name and sorted in a numerical order. Typical asset accounts in a

Recap: Sara learns that Yaakov Kasten is a developer who wants to buy their house for a nice price. Elimelech is tempted by the offer, while Sara vows to fight this real estate war.
Morning. It was this hectic “Mommy, sign my homework sheet,” put up the farina, make sure Binyamin and Efraim are dressed, the girls’ bows tied, rushing, rushing, wiping the table from breakfast, dabbing at her cheeks with a quick blush brush, assigning snack bags to each child marathon — and woe to the morning when those recess bags were not prepared in advance, and the clothing not laid out the night before. Today was such a morning. Already, when Sara awoke ten minutes late, she knew what kind of morning awaited her. And the office would be no less hectic, considering that yesterday’s workload was still undone, and she was not only working today, but paying back the time debt of yesterday’s hour off. Efraim was crying, a sure sign that Binyamin wasn’t dressed. There had been a time, in the luxurious era when she could still indulge herself, when she’d had a hard time getting out of bed to go to work. Elimelech understand that, and always had a mug of coffee waiting for her, its earthy aroma enticing her to follow the scent, into the world of the awake… Good memories. They had a way of relaxing her mind until she’d slip… back…. Her eyes closed against the sunshine. But, no. It all came flooding back to her now. Yaakov Kasten. Elimelech pleading with her. They were so tight. Every month they set aside a sum, and placed it in a savings account for each of their children. Chasunah gelt. Each month, if an unexpected expense loomed, they’d play with it like a Rubik’s Cube, poring over their budget — “No, we can’t take off from our Pesach envelope. Pesach is four months away.” Yaakov Kasten’s offer was tempting, like taking off pointy heels after dancing at a wedding, like opening up a window on a cold winter day. Tehilla refused to eat cereal; the cold milk and crunch grated on her teeth. Bread. Tehilla could make herself toast. The big ones were ready for their kiss on the cheek, and the bus was here. When she was waving the large yellow bus all way down the street, she finally allowed herself to relax her facial features, and then, to remember. She’d have to take care of Kasten today. She sighed. If she didn’t head over to work right this minute, she’d be late. And she had a phone conference schedule with Mordy Engel, an audit senior in her management. But now Denise, her staunchest supporter, wanted to sell. “Is there any way to change your mind?” “Why wouldn’t I sell?” Denise asked, shaking her head. “It’s a good deal. In every sense, especially dollars and sense.” She smiled at her own pun. “Even Nancy Olano said that for this deal, she’ll relocate. And frankly, you should too. Why are you hesitating?” “The real estate keeps going up in this area, because of these deals,” Sara said. She hesitated to explain about the members

Denise looked pragmatic as she walked Sara to the door. “Location, circumstances, all these change,” she offered sagely, gently inserting a booklet of real estate listings into Sara’s hands. So she was outnumbered. Outnumbered and manipulated. They were all selling, and Elimelech wanted to sell as well. She went home and sat down on her couch, to say her daily Tehillim and clear her head before the kids came home. On the cushion sat the booklet Denise had given her. She flipped it open to a random page and her eyes swept over the real estate listings. An old colonial for $530,000. A high ranch for $700,000. A dilapidated hut on Saddle River for $350,000. “No!” she said. “No. No!” To be continued...

FRUIT-TOPPED BISCOTTI 4 eggs 1 cup oil 1 cup sugar 1 tsp. vanilla extract 1 tsp. almond extract. 4 cups flour 2 tsp. baking powder 1. Mix first five ingredients and allow to rest for 10-15 minutes. 2. Preheat oven to 350. 3. Add flour and baking powder. Mix until very well combined. 4. Line four medium challah pans (10 inches long) with baking paper. 5. Divide the dough into prepared pans. 6. Smooth batter with spatula. 7. Bake for 40 minutes and let cool.
Topping: White chocolate Dark chocolate Chopped dried kiwi Chopped dried apricot Craisins Toasted slivered almonds 1. Cover the top of two biscotti loaves with melted dark chocolate, and two loaves with melted white chocolate 2. Sprinkle craisins and kiwi on white chocolate loaves and almonds and apricot on dark, before chocolate hardens.
For a beautiful presentation, slice into 他-inch slices and arrange a variety in a shallow box with clear cover. Tie with a ribbon.

½ stick margarine ½ cup whip topping ½ cup sugar ¼ cup flour
1 cup salted peanut halves 1 ½ cup unsalted peanut halves 6 oz. baking chocolate for dipping
1. Preheat oven to 350. 2. Melt margarine in a saucepan 3. Add whip and sugar, and cook on a low flame until sugar dissolves. 4. Bring to a boil and cook another 3-4 minutes, stirring constantly. 5. Mix in nuts and flour. 6. Line cupcake pans with Palisades parchment cupcake liners. Put one tablespoon of nut mixture into each cup. 7. Bake for 10-12 minutes, or until light golden brown. 8. Allow to cool and harden. Take out of liner and dip bottoms into melted chocolate. 9. A typical florentine is dipped in chocolate on the underside only, but you can choose to cover them totally in white or dark chocolate to attain a different look.
Although I’ve always been intrigued by this professional looking Italian treat, I was never brave enough to try it. Somehow the various steps made it seem complicated. But now that I’ve mastered the art, I’m game. The preparation time was much quicker and simpler than I had anticipated.

For this specific recipe, it is important to use parchment cupcake liners, as they will remain stuck on ordinary liners. Alternately, you can do them directly in silicone cupcake molds.
If you want to make these in quantity, you can reuse the parchment liners at least another time.

TWO-TONE BARK If you love bark, but not the asymmetrical look, this square two-tone version may just be the right one for you!
TIP:
Match your color scheme: use any color crushed candy or dried fruits to complement your look.
7 oz. dark chocolate 12 oz. white chocolate Craisins Roasted, salted almonds, chopped by hand to desired size - or use roasted slivered almonds 1. Melt the dark chocolate in a double boiler and spread onto a 9x13 flat tray, either foam or plastic. (This can also be done in a 9x13 pan, but is a lot easier in a flat tray.) 2. Place in freezer to allow to set. 3. Melt white chocolate in a double boiler, and spread over the dark layer, working quickly. 4. Scatter the toppings over the white chocolate, and using a spatula press into the chocolate to make sure it sets. 5. Cut with a knife into neat squares. If you are having a hard time, dip the knife into very hot water, dry and cut bark immediately.

And then there were 5. Following the New Hampshire Primaries, another two Republicans, Carly Fiorina and Chris Christie suspended their campaigns. Neither one had managed to collect any delegates and their poll numbers in upcoming states didn’t look promising. And up to this point. neither of them have endorsed any of the remaining candidates. As for now, Donald Trump is still the clear front runner in both the upcoming contests and national polls. The remaining candidates have fewer differences among them and so they divide the voters in similar percentage points depending on the particular poll. The contests in the next 2 weeks will determine who stays and who goes. Most pundits expect Super Tuesday, March 1st, which will see elections take place in 13 states, to be the turning point where candidates will be forced to make decisions on whether to stay or to go. If only 1 or 2 candidates remain among the five 2nd tier candidates, there is a possibility that they will be able to beat out Trump to win the party’s nomination. If the elections drag on for much longer Trump will either get enough delegates to secure the nomination (the minimum is 1,236), or we will see a brokered convention where you have the delegates decide on a nominee at the convention.
NEW HAMPSHIRE It was a night of big wins. On the Democrat side, Bernie Sanders who won big, beating Hillary Clinton 60% to 38%. He also won in every major demographic. It was an opportunity for him to show that he is a candidate to be reckoned with. On the Republican side Donald Trump

came in at 35%, 20% points above the next candidate, John Kasich who got 15% of the vote. Below him were Ted Cruz, Jeb Bush and Marco Rubio in a virtual tie with only one percentage point dividing the three of them. They all received an equal amount of delegates. At the bottom of the pack were Christie, Fiorina and Carson who all received less than 10% and no delegates.
DEBATES
The Democrats held another debate on February 11th in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Sanders touted his revolutionary platform and again tried to associate Hillary Clinton with Wall Street and the establishment, a move that has so far served him well. Hillary for her part painted Sanders plans as unrealistic and pointed to her years of experience, saying she would be more likely to be able to carry out the various plans she has if she were to win. The debate polls though, indicated a strong win for Bernie Sanders. The Republicans also held a debate on February 13th. All the remaining candidates took part in the debate. It was very heated, almost vicious, debate with every single one of the candidates trying to get ahead of the pack by not only touting their accomplishments but ripping everyone else apart. Following the debate POLLS viewers declared Rubio the winner followed by R C P P O L L AV E R A G E S Trump and Kasich. The bottom 3 were Cruz NATIONAL SOUTH CAROLINA Carson and Bush. The TRUMP 29.0 TRUMP 36.3 previous debate, which CRUZ 21.0 CRUZ 17.8 was deemed a failure RUBIO 20.3 RUBIO 15.8 for Rubio, seemed to CARSON 7.3 KASICH 9.8 have impacted the election. JUSTICE ANTONIN SCALIA, DEAD AT 79 In a shocking occurrence which shook up Washington, Justice Antonin Scalia was found dead, apparently of natural causes, on Saturday. Scalia was considered the most conservative member of the court, a constitutionalist who litigated according to the intent of the framers. According to the constitution, it is now the job of the President and the Senate to replace him. This is shaping up to be an epic battle. Being a Justice on the Supreme Court is a lifetime position. This means that anyone placed into the seat Scalia vacated will have an effect on American law for years to come. President Obama is a staunch liberal. His previous appointments to the court, Justice Sonia Sotomayor and Justice Elana Kagen have reflected his views. Seeing as most of the recent court decisions were 5/4 decisions with the court going sometimes more liberal and sometimes more conservative it would seem proper to keep the balance as it was. The Senate is currently majority Republican. Majority Leader Mitch McConnell immediately stated that the Senate would not confirm any of President Obama’s appointments and would wait for after the election to give the new president, and essentially the American People,

2 “Early” has a new meaning for me.
I remember sitting on the sheitel macher’s chair when I was still the mother of one little girl, sharing my early routine. “Listen, I have to get to bed at a decent hour — my baby wakes me up bright and early.” “What’s early?” Breindy, my sheitel macher, asked me. “Like, seven. Really.” The mother of eight looked at me and shrugged. “Well, I’m lucky if I can sleep ‘till then. At six-thirty I’m making bottles already.” Today, six-thirty is blessedly late. Nachman and I are playing Lego or washing the windows before the sun appears. My bedroom door creaks open anywhere between 5:15 and 6 am. I try to put Nachman back to bed, but as soon as I snuggle under my covers, the door opens again. This morning, I give up. The hope of getting another few minutes of shut-eye is, well, hopeless. I stand at the kitchen counter, while Nachman stands on top and looks through the cabinet. I’m crying as I spoon coffee and sugar into my mug. I take Nachman down from the counter and heat up water, while he tries to climb up again. I hold him in my arms, while he kicks in all directions, then finally breaks out into a grin when the kettle whistles. I settle Nachman on a kitchen chair and carefully pour in the hot water. I manage to finish pouring a second before Nachman crashes into me. I pour in the milk. I made a coffee and no one got hurt. Hurray! I sit down on the floor near Nachman. I wonder what kind of picture this would make: in the pre-dawn dark, a mother in her nightgown sits on the floor near her three-

Corn kernels stil dot the floor from last night’s supper. I furiously sweep the kitchen floor, like I am collecting jewels. year-old and cries. I get up and take a sip from the coffee on the counter and go back to sit near Nachman. This is one of my best-kept secrets: sit on the floor near your child and protect your sanity. Five thirty five. One and a half hours until the morning rush. I cry more. Nachman bops up and down on my lap. For a second, he stops to stare at my face, but then he goes right on bouncing. I stretch and start to get up. Nachman jumps to his feet and climbs up the kitchen table. I take him down and grab his hand. I steer him to his room and we schlep out the Clics box together, pushing it toward the kitchen. He gets busy opening the box; I grab the broom. Corn kernels still dot the floor from last night’s supper. I furiously sweep the kitchen floor, like I am collecting jewels. My jewels are those halfminutes that Nachman is busy. But no more. Nachman wrenches the broom away from me and scatters the dirt pile I had accumulated all around the room, then throws his head back and roars. He throws the broom up in the air and it lands with a clang. Before I can get it back, he aims the broom upward, shouting, “Up to the sky!” while poking my eye with its edge. I hold one end of the broomstick as he clutches it, trying to bandy it around. I don’t have the strength to pull it away. Nachman is so, so strong. The tears come faster now. When Nachman leaves with his teddy bear backpack
at 8:30 am, I feel like I am finally starting my day. But I also feel like my day is over; so much has already happened since I had opened my eyes before daybreak. I am ready to go back to sleep. I stumble into bed and then sit up in a panic two hours later. Did I really just wipe off two hours of my precious morning? I feel guilty but refreshed as I sip my second cup of coffee for the day. One part of me grumbles. This is a pure waste of time. Getting up at 5:15 and accomplishing nothing besides getting the kids dressed and fed until 8:30, and then sleeping away my morning hours. The other, more honest part of me wants to accept it. This “waste of time” is just how Hashem wants me to spend my time. It can’t be called a waste. What is time for, after all, if not to do what He wants? But a day after Pesach I’ve forgotten those lines. I’m a ragged, tear-streaked wreck. Nachman was home for twelve days straight. Enough said. I shoo the kids out the first morning they’re back to school with the glee of school girl singing, “No more school, no more books!” But after I’m done laughing, I sit down in my quiet house and cry. Is this what it comes down to? With the kids I’m a loser, and when I’m alone I’m okay? I don’t remember ever crying for so long in my life. When Aryeh comes home, I break down again and tell him about my tearful morning. “That’s it,” I declare. “I’m not doing this crazy thing anymore.”

Aryeh just nods. Well, then, what will you do? are the words I know are running through his head. The answer comes to me in a flash: “I have to talk to someone.” Aryeh claps. “That’s it!” On Mrs. Pearlman’s couch I spill out my story. I hate being with the kids. Nachman is wild. I have no control. I feel like some wicked woman with an awful attitude toward her children. Then she says something that surprises me: “There’s a problem, Chaya Liba.” I just gape. “This is not the norm. Sometimes you can go on suffering without ever validating and recognizing the problem.” There’s…a real problem? How funny… How delicious… How freeing! “From what you’re saying, Nachman is displaying classic ADHD behavior.” “But he’s only—“ Mrs. Pearlman holds up her hand. “ADHD affects a child from the very beginning of his life. Yes, we often cannot diagnose children at such a young age. But you have to visit a neurologist.” Aha. Now I know why I’m not managing. She puts it like this: “It’s like a mother who’s going every day to the hospital with a child, and then wonders why she is not managing like everyone else. You have to be honestly aware of your situation.” Honest and aware. I have a difficult child, and I am struggling. To be continued...

Success story of the week A grateful mom’s story: As our beautiful baby Chavy* matured into toddlerhood, we noticed red flags. She seemed smart, yet we were concerned… Her language development (she did not speak or respond appropriately to directions), physical development (she did not appear organized and sometimes very rigid and tight and other times seems floppy) social development- (she was sometimes so adorable and social, yet other times so inappropriate and would pull hair, pinch others, or just lay down flat on another child).. We were at a loss as of the best approach to reach our precious child locked in her challenges… how do we find a key? When Chavy entered the doors of Kinderland EI, a special education classroom of Hamaspik, we hoped for improvement… we pinned our hopes high, and baruch hashem she succeeded beyond our expectations! With a core team of devoted and experienced therapists, Chavy was given loads of love and understanding along with a comprehensive program prepared especially for her. The classroom teacher collaborated with me and all therapists on a regular basis to update everyone on the team using the latest approach and encompassing/updating goals. Chavy’s classroom routine revolved around activities she loved and craved; intertwined with skills she needed to develop. Language cards were initially used to give Chavy an understanding of the daily structure so she could make sense of the confusing world around her. As Chavy learned to follow basic routine we noticed she was much calmer and receptive to the familiar schedule. As soon as Chavy began talking we noticed that she is brilliant, way more than we realized. We continued working on Chavy’s weakness, systematically, and consistently and slowly skill by skill. As we continued working on her difficulties, we unwrapped the gift of our dear Chavy… A child who can walk, run, play, socialize and speak. A child who is continuing to shine and achieve her potential. What more can a mother ask for?

The Calming Effect of Morning Routine
Do you know how to make your day go smoother and happier? With a smooth and happy beginning! Ace the morning marathon by creating a morning routine, which is especially impactful for the special needs child. Of course, along with setting up a daily routine, comes speaking to your child when changes inevitably occur, and keeping your child abreast of the situation so he knows what to expect. Take one young child with speech delays, for example, whose mother told me, “It just never occurred to me to talk to him about what was going to happen, until one of the therapists gently pointed out how I can improve my interactions with my child. She suggested that this might be a direct cause for the meltdown my son was having at that very moment. “‘He needs to know what to expect,” she explained. “And the more predictable you can make it for him, the better.’ “I took her words to heart and started working on routines,” said the mother. “The change in my son’s behavior was immediately positive. Having routines in place gave him the structure he needed

and allowed him to progress.” She’s not the only one. I’ve seen many a client have a meltdown when confronted with an unexpected event, even a change in timing of a therapy session. For the siblings of a child with special needs, a routine may be the safety net they crave and need. Life can often seem inconsistent (and perhaps even unfair) when sharing a home with a child that needs extra help in various ways, and these kids may easily become resentful of the attention their sibling demands, so it is best to be proactive, and keep them in the know. Talk with each child as they mature and maintain lines of communication. Keeping a steady routine will help every member of the family feel loved and respected.
TRAINING Once you have picked a morning routine for kids, go through all of the steps with them in the morning. Give each child a list with his or her morning routine, and let them check off the items, mentally or otherwise, as they are tackled.
VISUAL CUES If you have younger children, use real pictures instead of just words and include all of the tasks that have to get done like: • Brushing teeth • Combing hair • Getting dressed • Eating Breakfast • Washing face • Putting shoes on • Get briefcase • Wait for bus at door Most parents who implement a visual schedule notice a huge difference. “It’s just a little paper with some simple drawings, but you won’t believe what a difference it’s made. My children are focused, and following along so happily!” gushed one mother.
OWNERSHIP Throughout the morning routine, encourage your child to take ownership of the tasks on his chart and try not to do everything for him. It might be quicker in the short term to put his pants on, but you may just contribute to a power struggle that you will pay for in time and frustration down the road. Talk to your child’s therapist to get specific ideas of how to help your child work on his goals in achieving independence. For a child who is hypotonic (low muscle tone), you may work on self–feeding or his getting dressed by himself, albeit with
a little help if needed, due to the tendency to tire with exertion.
ADDED GOALS Physical goals can also easily be incorporated in the morning run; a five-minute “exercise” session can get everyone awake and moving. Children with low attention span can benefit from hearing a story during breakfast time, when they are anyway seated. Mealtime, in general, can be a great way to focus in on language that you want your child to learn. Any child who is self-sufficient, who can tie his shoes, dress or undress himself, reflects in his joy and sense of achievement the image of human dignity, which is derived from a sense of independence. -- Dr. Maria Montessori
PREPARE YOURSELF The one running the show also needs to be properly prepared to ensure a smooth morning. Here are some ideas to help you keep your cool. 1. Prepare the night before. • Plan what you will be serving for breakfast and prepare the ingredients. • Pack snacks and lunches • Choose and prepare clothes
school essentials so you aren’t searching for backpacks, shoes etc. each morning. Try a box, hooks at your child’s level or a shelf. Assign a place for your pocketbook/wallet/phone as well. It is hard to encourage your kids to prepare ahead of time or keep all of their things in a designated place if you are the one yelling “where’s my phone?” to your husband each morning. 3. Get up before your kids. If you wake up even 15 minutes before your children, you can get yourself oriented and ready. Ideally, you have showered, dressed, packed and the most important of all (in my opinion), had a coffee! You need all the energy you can get, so set yourself up for success. Trying to establish a morning routine that actually works may seem to take a lot of effort, but the ease with which (most of) your mornings will flow will make the effort well worth it. Instead of being the most stressful time of the day, our mornings are calmer and set the pace for a wonderful day ahead.

MASTER BEDROOM Hi! Let’s begin our journey of d’cluttering and polishing our homes. Along the way, we can polish our hearts, minds, and souls.
Allotted time for the master bedroom: 4 hours. 2 hours for the closet (1 ½ hours for decluttering and organizing and a half hour for cleaning) For the rest of the room, allow yourself 20 minutes for each job, unless something is overly soiled, in which case the scrubbing may take longer. If you’re working on it for longer than that, half of the stuff in your room, A: doesn’t belong in your room or B: doesn’t belong anywhere in your home!

Don’t forget to take a two-minute break every half hour to have a drink and stretch with the broom held high above your head, horizontally. Hold for 40 seconds and release. That will take away back pain caused from all the bending and, well, cleaning.

Broom, shovel, mop, duster, vacuum cleaner Window cleaner: Windex (no drip streak) For mirrors you can use the Windex, or make your own mixture with white vinegar and water. Wipe with newspapers for a streak-free shine. • Mild cleanser: Mr. Clean Multi Surfaces, antibacterial; a favorite in my home. • Furniture polish- Method Wood For Good polish (almond) or Murphy’s oil soap liquid (gives it a high shine and I love the smell!) • Floor cleaner: Black Diamond Wood & Laminate Floor Cleaner • Containers, dividers, hangers If you prefer all natural cleaning products, Seventh Generation Natural All Purpose Cleaner is great. The products I mention here are all fantastic products and tried by me. Obviously, I haven’t tried all the products on the market, but I did compare most of them, and the ones I mention are my top picks.

GOAL:
D’clutter, clean, and organize — in that order.

Before you begin with anything else, strip the beds of linen and wash them in the machine. Also remove the bedding; either airing out or washing it in the process. Remove your curtains, and have them join the line of items to washed. Keep those machines going, and by the time the room is finished, so will all the washing!
2 THEN WE CAN START WITH THE CLOSET AND DRAWERS. a. Empty your closet. Everything! Otherwise the closet can drag on for days… (Lay a plastic tablecloth over your bed if the linen is stripped.) b. SORT: Grab two garbage bags. Throw out damaged clothing in one. Just do it. Old clothing that hasn’t been worn in a while should go in the other garbage bag to be donated. Don’t spend too much time agonizing over what to keep or throw out. If you have to think for more than ten seconds about a certain sweater, then give it away. c. Designate a place for everything: • Clothing should be hung with everything facing one direction, divided by type of clothing. I like the following order: long robes, dresses, then blazers, shirts, bulky sweatshirts, tops that need hanging, and lastly, skirts. Use your judgment, or email me for questions. sarastyle2020@gmail. com. • Coats and rain jackets belong in your coat closet. • Seasonal items that you won’t be using any time in the next while belong in storage. • Delicate sweaters, shells, and thin tops should be folded, sorted according to style, color or type. • Shoes: Since shoes are my weakness, it’s hard for me to preach about having too many! But everything has to have a place, and my absolute rule is: if one thing comes in, another goes out. There are great storage solutions for shoes, depending on your closet. There are so many shoe racks out there! Choose what fits best within your budget and space. They range from $8.50 to $150. Of course, custom made and anything a little unique will be more.

Here are some options: • Origami Hanging Organizer - Container Store $39.99 • 3-Tier Mesh Shoe Rack - Home Depot - $29.99 • 36-Pair Over Door Shoe Rack Houzz.com - $23.27 • If you have drawers: Get dividers for your hosiery, turbans and snoods etc. • If you have shelves: Get bins, and neatly fold your hosiery and headcovering in separate bins for easy access. • Handbags go on the top shelf of the closet. The one you use on a daily basis should be at eye level. Wipe handbags with a damp cloth, and shake them out. All the loose change you find can be quite handy for your tzedakah pushkah, and put away the bills for an outing with your friends. Hey! Not now. Finish your room first! • Belts and Scarves: There are quite a few hanger options designed for belts and scarves. Do not fold belts, as their shape will be ruined. Scarves can be folded, although hanging is a better option. Hooks are great as well.

NOW ON TO...THE HEAVY WORK...CEILING AND WALLS!
• Dust your ceilings, working your way down. Don’t forget the corners! • Depending on what light fixture you have, you may want to take it down, or just wash with a gentle cleanser. Make sure it is completely dry before you put it back. • Wall art: Never spray directly on the frame. Rather, wipe down with a damp rag. • Dust blinds with a damp cloth, not wet. • Wash windows and window sills. • Your curtains should be out of the machine by now: Hang them up.

By: Ruchy Reese The countdown is on! With only 57 days until Pesach, it’s not surprising if you experience the occasional bout of CIHBP (Chometz Induced High Blood Pressure.) When you feel you those numbers creeping up, it’s time to sit back with The Monsey View and read about cleaning instead of actually doing it!
CLEANING A SPICK-AND-SPAN HISTORY
• The history of household cleaning product starts with plain ol’ water to wash everything down, that is, IF someone saw the need to wash. Many civilizations weren’t overly concerned with any form of cleanliness. Over time, however, soaps were introduced into daily life for home sanitation, later followed by household cleaning supplies as we know them today, like Lysol, Mr. Clean, Windex, and bleach — only being invented well into the 1900s. Lysol was originally invented to cure a medical condition, but was actually proven to be a dangerous substance that caused medical conditions when used as prescribed, and thus was relegated to the cleaning closet. Mr. Clean was created as a substitute for the highly caustic chemicals used to deep-clean ships (which often left workers disabled) and soon become the best-selling household cleaner. • In times gone-by, carpet cleaning was a mystery solved by the friendly little carpet rod (that gave a not-so-friendly ache to the arms of the one doing the beating!). The following quote is taken from an 1827 carpet-cleaning guide: To Restore Carpets to their First Bloom.
Beat your carpets with your carpet rods until perfectly clean from dust - then if there be any ink spots, take them out with a lemon, observing to rinse with clean water; then take a hot loaf of white bread, split down the centre, having the top and bottom crust one on each half; with this rub your carpet extremely well over, then hang it out on or across a line with the right side out; should the night be fine, leave it out all night, and if the weather be clear, leave it out for two or three such nights, then sweep it with a clean corn broom, and it will look as when first new.” Somehow, I don’t think this method will work for Pesach cleaning... •
Many moons ago, clean clothing was obtained either by dumping all items to be washed into a bucket and securely fastening said bucket into a flowing river, and letting the water wash over the clothing, leaving it clean; or alternatively, by using good ol’ elbow grease to get the gunk out. Cauldrons full of water would be heated and the clothing inserted into the boiling water along with a bar of soap (usually made from a combination of animal fat and ashes) to loosen the grunge. The clothing would then be agitated by mixing tools or scrubbed on a washboard to get the remaining dirt out. (Rinsing away the soap was a whole ‘nother parsha!) • “Hitzati mitusi” takes on a whole new meaning when you look at bed-changing through the lens of history. Freshening up your bed was a tedious process that involved emptying your “tick” (a duvet-like bag) of whatever

bedding material you used, be it straw, leaves, or grass, and then scrubbing your tick clean. Then you’d have to fill it once again — this time with fresh stuffing. If that wasn’t enough to tire you out, the tick still had to be sewn closed before you could go to sleep! • There’s one type of cleaning you’ll be really happy to avoid, and that’s scraping the soot out of your chimney. Way back when, fireplace chimneys needed to be regularly maintained by scraping off the layers of soot that developed on the chimney walls. It was a dangerous job that often resulted in fatal falls and respiratory ailments. Although your heating and cooking system may need maintenance, it’s nothing compared to scrubbing out a chimney by hand!
• If cleaning isn’t your cup of tea, just keep in mind that by doing your Pesach preparations, you are actually getting a good workout! An hour of cleaning burns roughly 100 calories. • The average woman worldwide (not necessarily factoring in the chometzchasing type) spends 12,896 hours of her lifetime cleaning, while men on average, spend but 6,448 hours. • Make sure to polish your sinks well on a regular basis! Research shows that there are even more germs in a kitchen sink than in that other (rather unmentionable) room in the house… • Desperately seeking to bade good riddance to those yucky germs? Make sure that your antibacterial spray remains on the surface you seek to sanitize for a bare minimum of 30 seconds. • Speaking of disinfecting, if you take the time to disinfect your desk regularly, you can reduce the risk of a having to take a sick day by up to 30%... then again, maybe a day off doesn’t sound that bad… • In the middle of all this cleaning, try to make sure that you get outdoors for a little fresh air. In addition to the mental benefits you’ll reap, you’ll be happy to know that you are (temporarily at least) getting away from those little buggers. Afterall, the air of an enclosed space can contain up to 500% more germs than outdoor air. • While you scrub away all those bits of chometz, be thankful for this oncea-year cleaning bonanza: before the 1800s, the average life expectancy was well under the age of 40, due to the generally low standard of cleanliness, and high level of uncontrolled germs. “Making Pesach” naturally results in the added benefit of a cleaner, healthier way of living.

THE COMPOTE CHRONICLES “I’m really full by now,” my husband smiled apologetically. “I think I’ll skip the compote for tonight.” I retreated back to the kitchen slowly, holding my deflated hopes in the untouched plate of compote. * * * * * It all started when I got married and attended the very first meal at my in-laws. The tingling in my toes kept creeping upward as we entered the brightly lit dining room. Crisp linen napkins starched to perfection were
chalantly, causing me to nearly choke on the many seltzer bubbles dancing in my mouth. “Anyone in the mood of compote?” All around the table, heads were shaking from right to left. I saw my reflection in the glass china closet door. Two perfectly arched eyebrows. My head bobbed, up, down, up, down. What a question! Of course I wanted compote. The only sound disrupting our quiet trek home, other than our footsteps echoing on the hard pavement, were the seagulls hovering above Suzanne Lake. In their white winter coats, they sailed majestically over the icy body of water while my thoughts sailed to next week’s Shabbos table. Perhaps my mother-inlaw would ask, “Anyone in the mood of fish or cholent?” I felt that familiar tingling in my toes inching its way up again.
All around the table, heads were shaking from right to left. My head bobbed, up, down, up, down. What a question! neatly inserted into metallic napkin rings. Steaming plates were served and emptied. “So far so good,” I mused. “This place really feels like home.” It seemed there were no major surprises in store, other than my ten-year-old brother-in-law comfortably perched on his Tatty’s lap for the duration of the Shabbos meal. The soup plates were swiftly cleared by fastmoving, helpful hands. Following the tasty chicken platter, was apple strudel on square white china dishes, which was quickly devoured. And then, my mother-inlaw announced it so very non-

* * * * * SHABBOS MORNING. I observed my new husband sitting at my parents’ table from the corner of my eye. All was going well, until little brother politely placed Mommy’s fantastic compote before his new brother-inlaw. The compote cup waited in its place patiently. My father fingered his bencher, staring at my

I fidgeted in my seat, willing myself to be anywhere but here. “Eat Chaim, eat.” My father gently prodded his new son-in-law. “Believe me, the Shvigger’s compote is well worth tasting and,” he paused for added emphasis, “compote is an essential part of our Shabbos meal.” At that very moment, my little sister scrambled onto my husband’s lap, oblivious to my mother’s disapproving expression. She dug straight into his compote and smacked her little lips in sheer delight. The look on my husband’s face was one of utter relief. Saved from the depths of the compote. * * * * * FRIDAY 4:30 P.M. The shrill erev Shabbos bell sounded, announcing the arrival of Shabbos in a mere fifteen minutes. My floral bandana slightly askew, I raced through the house hiding muktzeh objects and taping the light switches. It had been a day of heavy cleaning, and lots of cooking. Ahhh… I stretched my legs on the leather sofa as I ushered in our first Shabbos at home. My husband’s voice was loud
and strong as he sang the zemiros. I contemplated between using my small china bowls or crystal cups for my pureed pear compote. Its perfect lavender coloring and smooth consistency was bound to be a winner. I popped a deep maroon cherry on top. Pretty! My husband lifted his spoon reluctantly and dripped a bit into his mouth. He was working hard on forming a slight smile. “Delicious!” he proclaimed grandly. I agreed wholeheartedly as I finished my compote to the last bit. I lifted my head satisfied. My face fell. The cup at my right was completely full, minus the one teaspoon my husband had tasted. After four failed attempts with four different recipes, I succumbed. Our Shabbos meal would always finish off with
cholent, spicy and heavy. * * * * * FRIDAY NIGHT. Our finest china and sparkling flatware were delicately displayed on the lace tablecloth. I reveled in my zeese yingelech’s voices in song, as I rocked my young daughter to sleep. The tangy scent of fruity tea and apples tickled my nostrils. Although I had quit any compote making attempts many years ago, the Tea Enhanced Applesauce recipe by Draizy Wercberger in The Monsey View got me to buy a large bag full of Cortland apples once again. I dared to fool myself into believing that this time my compote would

CHOCOLATE DIPPED PRETZEL RODS Now that the month of Adar has arrived (even if it is Adar I), I’m sure Purim and mishloach manos ideas are starting to percolate in your mind. These pretzel rods are easy to make and
can be done in any color you prefer. There are many ways to wrap and present the pretzel sticks either for mishloach manos or even as a centerpiece for the Purim table.

INGREDIENTS: • Pretzel rods • Colored baking chocolate • Assorted decorative sprinkles
Melt chocolate in the microwave for one minute, and then take it out and mix. Return it to the microwave for ten seconds at a time. Mix every ten seconds, until the chocolate is completely liquid. (If you do not have a microwave to use, you can melt it in a double boiler)
Pour the melted chocolate into a cup so that it will be high enough to coat the pretzel well.
Dip a pretzel rod into the melted chocolate.
Place the pretzel rod on a cookie sheet lined with baking paper.
Let the extra chocolate drip back into the cup.
Freeze for five minutes to make sure the chocolate hardens properly.
Pour decorative sprinkles over the chocolate. (You may need to stick some on piece by piece if they fall off.)

Using a square plate, line up the pretzel rods and put into a cellophane bag. 2. Fold over the end of the bag and tape it to the bottom. 3. Tie a bow around the plate with an organza ribbon.

Use a glass or jar to showcase the pretzel rods.
1. Put three pretzel rods in a narrow, long cellophane bag. 2. Fold over and tape down the opening of the bag. 3. Take a decorative paper and trace the width of the bag. Make it about 4 inches long and cut it out. 4. Fold the 4-inch paper in half and make two hole punches in the center. 5. Staple the paper to the top of the closed bag of pretzels. 6. Put a ribbon through the hole punches and tie a bow.

by Ann Zeilingold Everybody knows that credit is a key component of the mortgage approval process. Most people misguidedly think that the only important factor is the credit score! It is a fact that the credit score can determine your interest rate. It is a fact that most mortgage programs have minimum credit scores. It is also a fact that while the score is important, it is more important to review each line of the credit report, because there are some credit catastrophes that require a waiting period before one can get a new mortgage. Here are some examples: • Looking at Mary and Edward’s credit report, I saw that their scores were over 700, but unfortunately they had a Chapter 13 Bankruptcy that was discharged in October 2015; they cannot get a mortgage loan until November 2016. • Baila and Chaim have three late payments on a mortgage loan that they cosigned for a friend. Their score is 705, but they cannot get a loan until they have two or less 30-day late payments in the last 12 months. • I met with Sam and Yonina and learned that they had a short sale two years ago. They cannot get a mortgage on their current home, a condo that they are paying 5.75%. Their rate is 699. • I originated a mortgage loan for Yossi and Bassie, with Bassie’s parents as cosigners. On the parents’ report was a paid collection, stating “Settled less than full balance” underneath the

posting. It stated that it was “revolving”, but the rating was M5. Revolving usually means a credit card, while the “M” rating is designated for mortgage. We actually got the online automated underwriting approval, but under “Credit”, it said that we should determine if it was in fact a mortgage loan. It turns out that it was a “Settled Home Equity Line Of Credit.” The parents were partners in a rental property, and the managing partner had asked them to sign documents to lower the payment, in addition to providing some documents. They actually thought that they were refinancing. It turns out that the partner arranged for a settled loan which means that they paid it off in full for less than what was owed. When one has a settled debt, it is treated the same as a short sale and the waiting period for this specific loan is four years. The four years is almost up, so we only had to delay the closing for a few months. The following are some of t h e

The primary reason why people incur one of the above credit catastrophes is that circumstances sometimes spiral out of control, usually due to an illness, loss of income, increased expenses, business partnerships, divorces and even death, etc... But even if the circumstances are beyond control, investigate and learn, what
are the long reaching ramification of your credit being affected in this negative way? Not just from a mortgage perspective, but from an overall life-perspective i.e. possible higher costs of insurance, possibly not being able to get certain jobs in certain fields, possibly not being able to obtain new credit cards, or facing the possibility of a garnishment of salary or your bank account. Credit derogatory should not be taken lightly. The silver lining in this tale of gloom is that credit derogatories have a time limit. I see lots of people who are finally able to repair their credit and their lives as time passes.
