I just wanted to send in a quick “thank you” to Esty Weiss for reminding me about coconut oil. I’ve used it in the past, but slowly returned to my canola oil. After reading the article about coconut oil, and researching some of its other benefits, I called up Ratio and they delivered both coconut oil and tea tree oil, which I then combined and rubbed into rashes in the folds of my baby’s neck, arms and legs that we’d tried treating with anti-fungals and hydrocortisone in the past, but it kept coming back. After mixing these two oils together, I was surprised to see that the rash went running! For the first time in months, my baby was rash-free! It was really a tremendous feeling to see that something so easily accessible, and relatively harmless could help so much! Thanks Esty for giving us that reminder.

However, one thing in her column made me feel a little overwhelmed. Dumping out my entire closet at one time and cleaning it in an uninterrupted cleaning spree sounds, in theory, like a great idea. However, I am a Yiddishe mama, blessed with three small children under six years old, including one baby that wakes up a minimum of three times a night. Having the right combination of time and energy to tackle a room in one shot is a blessing that I can only dream of… Last time I tried the closet-dump method I was reduced to tears by the piles of clothing that lay in heaps around the room for several days, becoming only messier as time ticked by. Finally, my frustrated husband was forced to finish the room, since just looking at the mess overwhelmed me. In a small-child home, interruptions and draining energy seem to be par for the course. How realistic is it to allot four hours of straight cleaning to one room? Let’s not even talk about the concept of cleaning a ceiling! I never even KNEW ceilings (save for the cobwebs that gather in corners or on light fixtures/fans) were meant to be cleaned, until I read this article. Dearest Normal! Thank you for your letter! Believe it or not, we organizers are normal Yiddishe mamas too, baruch Hashem! Even the most organized individuals have their moments of disarray in closets, just as a professional chef has scrambled eggs for dinner every once in a while. The purpose of these articles is to help the readers achieve their Pesach cleaning in what, to me, seems the most efficient way possible. If four hours of cleaning at a time is too much for you, then by all means, separate them in hour intervals. Obviously, cleaning the ceilings is not an every week job, and if your ceilings don’t need cleaning before Pesach, kudos to you! Once a year, it is okay to do the little extras, if you have the time. Perhaps the reason you might have had a hard time with your closet, is because (and this is very common) people spend too much time agonizing over each item. Do one type of clothing at a time, if that works better for you. It’s just like seeing all those yummy recipes in the magazine. Some work

Before I address the letter writer who is questioning her shopping habits, I’d like to point out that she did not specify what she includes in her “grocery shopping.” Are her meat, chicken, and fish included? That would make a big difference in determining if the numbers make sense. But I also feel that it is more than just the rising food prices that have inflated our grocery bills. We live in times of abundance. It is often hard to resist the temptation we feel towards the many interesting and convenient products that we find on the shelves. We live in an era where the grocery sells pre-checked produce, pre-cut and thinned chicken cutlets, and even ready-to-bake marinated meat. It is often hard to say “no,” to conveniences like that, but if you are looking to cut corners as to see a drop in your monthly grocery, those would each be a fine place to start. While I do enjoy the conveniences of what today’s age has to offer, (and if it can make an erev yom tov or simcha season less stressful) there are some things that my heart can’t take; like using expensive Ziploc bags for something that could just as easily be put into a regular, knotted closed bag. Being organized and buying stuff in bulk also goes a long way in slashing grocery bills, as does looking carefully at prices and being mindful, (not stingy, just mindful) that prevents, for instance, a $20 stack of chocolate unintentionally making its way into the wagon. May we always be in a position to enjoy Hashem’s bounty directly from His full, open, and wide hand. R. S.

The Kotzker Rebbe once asked, “Where do you find Hashem?” The answer he gave was, “Anyplace you let him in.” This new segment is about Hashgacha Pratis and thanking Hashem for all of the things He does for us. It was Shabbos and I was davening at the Viener shul on Ronald Drive. We were up to Torah leining and the gabbai went to open the safe inside the aron to remove the sefer Torah. However, the safe was jammed! He tried a few times and then other people tried, to no avail. It was decided to send two people to a neighboring shul to borrow a sefer Torah. When they returned with the borrowed sefer Torah, they saw the safe had finally been opened. Now we had two sifrei Torah and weren’t sure which to use. Someone went to the Dayan to ask, and was told that we should use the one we had borrowed, because it would not be kavodig to that Torah to be returned unused. When the time came to take off the mantel, one of the men standing nearby noticed that that very Shabbos was the yartzeit of the person the sefer Torah had been written in honor of. Interestingly, the two men who had borrowed the Torah said that they had been told that this Torah was not usually used in that shul!

It’s Not “All or Nothing” I found myself smiling as I fried up a pan of french toast for my twelve-year-old son. I used organic palm oil, organic eggs and what the package described as “pure plain white bread,” since my son refuses to eat any other kind of bread. I’ve decided to avoid taking the “all or nothing” route and at least give him a few healthy options. Some of you may find this comical, but that is exactly the point I’d like to make here: If you can’t do absolutely everything right (and you can’t!), then simply do whatever you can. Just do your best! When it comes to your health, the sky’s the limit — there truly is no end. You can eat everything organic, exercise every day, drink only the purest water, live without stress (no such thing), go to sleep on time, avoid medications and so on. On the other hand, you can walk outside and breathe in the polluted air full of the unhealthy fumes from cars, buses, and trucks. You wouldn’t move to a village where there are only horses and buggies for transportation, would you? What about cell phones? Most people do use cell phones a lot, and I’m sure you’ve been exposed to micro-

waves, computers, x-rays, and other devices that transmit radiation. I feel comfortable saying that we live in a world where it is almost or totally impossible not to be exposed to something unhealthy. But that is not a reason to ignore everything! The truth is that because you are exposed to so many chemicals, including toxins from your food and the environment, it is extremely important that you counteract these things with whatever you can. So, if you can change your oil from canola to palm, or if you can transition from white sugar to monk fruit sugar – or even to organic eggs – well, these seemingly small differences will make a huge difference in the extent to which you expose your body to chemicals. Every little thing you can do will benefit your body, and it will leave you feeling as though you have a bit more control over the chaos in your life. The question you want to ask yourself is, are you drowning in sugar and chemicals on a daily basis? Is it really just here and there, or has it become a problem? There’s no such thing as perfection, but you can certainly aim to do your best. Here is one example: I use muenster cheese usually once a day. It’s a quick, easy and good protein. I called a number of different companies, searched in local health food stores, and asked people whom I thought might know where it could be, but I just couldn’t find any hard cheese that was cholov yisroel. It isn’t easy going from store to store, soliciting prize donations, so I asked the Dayan what is a reasonable number of free raffle tickets that I can divide among the volunteers as a reward for your efforts. I only received the answer last night, and I rushed to prepare the envelopes with your tickets. There may have been mistakes due to the rush, so please check your envelopes and speak to me if there is a problem.” The ladies at the meeting collected their envelopes and began to stream out the door, but three stayed behind and made their way over to Mrs. Katz. Hindy Licht spoke first. “Thank you for the free tickets, but I would like to return mine. I was reading in this week’s parsha about the ketores, and I read that the chachamim praised the Avtinas family who made the ketores because they made a rule that the women in their family would not wear perfume. Even though it would have been muttar for them to buy perfume, they didn’t want anybody to think that perfume they bought had been taken from the ketores. I’m so inspired

why not?” She, too, accepted her envelope. The above story is fictional, but the issue of drawing benefit from our mitzvos is very real. If a person does a mitzvah in order to benefit himself, does it take away from the mitzvah? According to the Gemara (Pesachim 8a), when it comes to tzedakah, even if a person explicitly states that he is giving tzedakah for his own personal gain, he is not only called a tzaddik, but a tzaddik gamur. Surprisingly, the Chofetz Chaim, based on Rashi’s p’shat on this Gemara, extends this idea to all mitzvos. The Chofetz Chaim paskens that if a person does any mitzvah for personal benefit, then the mitzvah is considered lishma as long as he also has in mind the mitzvah itself (Ahavas Chessed, Chelek 2, Perek 23). Of course, the highest level is to do a mitzvah with no thought of personal gain, which the Rambam calls the madreiga of Avraham Avinu (Hilchos Teshuva, Perek 10), but it is comforting to know that there are different levels of lishma. Parshas Ki Sisa discusses the ketores. The Avtinas family cited by “Hindy Licht” did, in fact, draw benefit from making the ketores: they were paid a wage. This personal benefit did not detract from the praise

Take It All Into Account Business or Pleasure

By Joshua Kohen, CPA Commingling Business and Personal Funds We have discussed so far the various options of business incorporation. We further focused on setting up an accounting system, and looked at the differences between the cash basis and accrual basis accounting methods. I would like to focus now on a fundamental step that should take place on Day One of starting a corporation. That step is opening a separate bank account in which you will conduct all of your business transactions. We all have one, or even more than one, personal checking account where we do our banking. New business owners are often tempted to take the shorter road, running business and personal finances out of the same bank account without keeping proper boundaries, namely, commingling business and personal funds. Examples are using company credit cards for personal use, depositing business checks into personal accounts, and withdrawing money from a business without documentation. It may seem to be more convenient in the short run, and perhaps you will save on the added bank service fees. However, mixing personal and business funds is a recipe for trouble for many reasons. First and foremost, separating

business and personal finances is crucial from a legal perspective. We previously discussed the different advantages of incorporating a business. One of the main reasons that you chose to incorporate your business was to create a wall between you and the corporation in order to protect your personal assets from the company’s liability. If that is the case, you have to demonstrate it by actually operating the corporation as an independent legal entity unrelated to you. Commingling your personal and business finances only shows the opposite, that you and your corporation are not so separate after all. “Piercing

the Corporate Veil” (as it’s referred to in corporate law) can be a basis for courts to challenge or even deny you that protection and remove your personal liability shield. Another important reason to keep personal and business finances separate is for tax purposes. As you know, you pay taxes on your net income after all business expenses are subtracted. And yet, many small business owners miss crucial deductions and overpay taxes due to lack of proper record keeping. To qualify for a deduction, expenses must be strict-

In addition, running your business finances from a personal account may adversely affect your situation and put you in an unfavorable position when questionable claims arise. Without a proper explanation, you may end up losing otherwise legitimate tax deductions. You can avoid all that aggravation and start off your business on the right track by keeping business and pleasure separate.

The key here is that payouts from the corporation, be it salaries, bonuses, or dividends, should be properly recorded for what they are.

With proper bank reconciliations, you can have your income and expense reports ready fairly easily. Conversely, it is going to be very difficult and time consuming to track down those business expenses when they’re mixed together with household finances. Your accountant will have to go through all the expenses incurred during the year to identify qualifying business deductions. It is needless to say that your bookkeeping and accounting fees will rise steeply as a result. One additional reason to separate personal and business bank accounts is to keep you out of trouble with the IRS and avoid losing out on claiming legitimate deductions. By commingling accounts, you are running the risk of getting audited by the IRS. Nothing upsets an auditor more than finding unexplained claims

Recap: Sara tries convincing the neighbor not to sell, but the neighbor, in turn, tells her she’s being foolish for not taking part in the deal.

It was the sort of winter day when the sun is determined enough to shine, and the snow, defeated, melts into audible rivers trickling down the side of the road. For weeks now, the signs were up: “Garage Sale” with Denise Callen’s address. It hung on the street corners and on wooden poles. On her grass, Denise planted a lawn sign. She could be seen organizing, her shoulders bent all the way to the driveway asphalt. She unscrewed her garden hose and furled it into a coil. She even removed her window planters and her house looked sadder for it, like it was bedding down for the night. “It’s going to be nice outside, you’ll see,” she said, leaning over her fence on Thursday, when temperatures had once again dropped to finger-biting cold and the sale was only two days away. “Not the season for sales, but then again, everything must go.” The Olanos, in the meantime, had asked permission from Denise to hold their moving sale on the same day. Denise agreed, and said that to the contrary, it would bring more customers, and would Nancy please spread the word to her community. On the day of the sales, Sara felt nervous. She had never shopped at a garage sale, had never even ventured close to one; she even avoided malls at all costs. She was of the opinion that if a local Monsey family opened a store and provided responsible service for reasonable prices, she’d first go there. Usually, she wasn’t disappointed. Over time, her habit grew into an awareness, a belief that to patronize the local shops was just another form of u’mi’besarcha al tisalem. Especially when she had her own business, and she’d get a client she hardly expected to walk in, and she would understand, with gratitude, that this person chose to drive all the way over, buy his socks and undershirts from her, just to give her what he could have poured into the vast pockets of Walmart executives and shareholders alike. She envisioned the dual garage sale, on either side of her humble property, as a pack of grasshoppers descending on another person’s field, scrounging and

bargain hunting. She thought of the infestation, hoping it wouldn’t spill over to her side of the fence. Tiredly, she wondered if she should reinforce her lock, if the bargain hunters would also be rag wearers and sofa crashers. Sunday arrived. The sun smiled, but no one could be fooled into a spring jacket. Denise hurried about in her heavy gait, laying vases and lamps on the folding tables she’d set along the length of her driveway. I should help, Sara thought. On the opposite side, the Olanos had a treasure trove of every sort of toys, games and electronics piled onto a tarp. The boys were in yeshiva, the girls were sleeping in. Sara went over to Denise to offer a hand. Denise straightened. “Everything’s all set up,” she said, clapping her hands together as if to free them from dust. She checked the small price tag she’d strung around the base of an ornate, ceramic lamp. Eight dollars, it said. “Take a look around,” she urged Sara. “I’m letting all of this go. For me, it’s about releasing the past and heading into the future. But you’re staying here. You might like some of this.”

Tiredly, she wondered if she should reinforce her lock, if the bargain hunters would also be rag wearers and sofa crashers. Sara would never have thought so, but having been in Denise’s home, and seeing how each item in that house was lovingly attended to, she considered. I’d love to have the window flowers. How much are they?” Denise named a small sum and encouraged her to include the watering can with it. She ended up taking a small hoe as well. Then she went home to watch from the window. Throughout the day, people drove up. First it was a white-haired pair who bought many of the electronics. Then, on the Olano side, a young parent scooped up a trunkful of themed toys. By mid-morning, Sara’s oatmealchocolate chip cookies were baked and cooled, and she sent over a plate to both sides. Then, she went into her house, sat on her couch and closed her eyes. So this was for real. Denise Callen was selling almost every single item she owned, including her kitchen table and chairs. They would move. It’s not like she was afraid she

would miss the neighbors, it was just… a chapter was closing, and the new page seemed full of thick, angry scrawls. Even Yaakov Kasten had driven by the

roots and building large families, there was nothing to do. Still, when elections arrived, and a double-decker bus made its rounds, making her wonder who, exactly, paid for the bus and all the hoopla, and whether Kasten wasn’t a part of it, she decided not to vote. Now, Denise was selling off the last pieces of her life. The linens she’d ironed by her upstairs side window, sold. The planters were now hanging on the railings of Sara’s porch. Soon, the grass she’d carefully weeded with her old paisley gardening gloves would be flattened by the tracks of a CAT excavator, which would reach its arm into the face of her house and claw, fist, and reduce it to a scrap heap. Sara hadn’t realized how much that would bother her. At suppertime, Denise knocked on her door. Chaim Elazar was home for a change, and Sara had quickly fried schnitzel and pulsed the Shabbos liver into chopped liver pâté as soon as he walked in. She’d also cooked up a can of beets on the front burner and was determined to see him eat. Tehilla had just started on the salad and announced to everyone that the dressing had Splenda, which was true. She spit her first bite into a napkin and announced that the fake taste was a tongue curdler, and then

Mishloach Manos THATâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;LL TAKE THE CAKE With cupcakes being super trendy these days, these delicious cupcakes are sure to be a hit! To present the final project, we headed over to Amazing Savings and were thrilled to find affordable ways to showcase our creations. The chocolate cupcakes fit nicely inside of the lovely teacups we bought, for an elegant presentation. We further up-ed the style factor by bringing in burlap material, a wooden tray and a chevron pattern â&#x20AC;&#x201D; although you can use any material to achieve the look that you are aiming for. The Almost Dairy Blueberry cupcakes became a showstopper when showcased in the upside-down glass jars that we purchased. You can choose your choice of topping; either the featured frosting or the blueberry glaze. Both are extraordinarily delicious! To bring in an added Purim touch, we topped it off with a mask. To add another bracha to the mishloach manos, just sneak a schnapps bottle inside.

CHOCOLATE CUPCAKES 3 cups flour 3 cups sugar 1 teaspoon salt 1 tablespoon vanilla sugar 1 cup cocoa

3 teaspoons baking powder 1 1/3 teaspoons baking soda 1 ½ cups oil 1 ¾ cups boiling water 6 eggs

1. Preheat oven to 375 F. 2. Mix together all the dry ingredients. Thereafter, mix in the rest of the wet ingredients. 3. Bake for 25 minutes, or until you stick in a knife into the cupcake and it comes out dry.

This is a recipe that sounds somewhat typical; however it’s different than all your other chocolate cake or cupcake recipes, given that it comes out of the oven exceptionally moist and so mouthwatering!

CREAM CHEESE FROSTING This frosting is a winner! It can be used for various types of cupcakes - and surely enhances these moist chocolate cupcakes. This will definitely contribute to your simchas Purim!

How to Make a Fondant Rose Step 1 In advance: Form a teardrop shape out of 1/2 inch fondant ball. Coat the end of a toothpick with shortening, insert into bottom of teardrop, and let dry for at least 24 hours.

Step 2 Lightly dust your work area with cornstarch and roll fondant to 1/16 of an inch. Using a large fondant rose cutter, cut 3 blossom shapes. (If you don’t have one, you can cut it out by hand.) Two of the blossoms should be covered with plastic wrap while you are working on the first. Make a ½-inch-cut between each petal toward the middle of blossom. With your finger or a ball tool for fondant, gently soften the edges of the petals. Gently push down in center of blossom to form an indented cup shape.

Step 3 Brush the middle of the blossom with water. Insert the toothpick with the pre-made rose center into the middle of the blossom and then gently push blossom up to the bottom of the rose center. Imagine the five petals as a stick figure, with each petal corresponding to the the head, arms, or legs. Start at the “head” petal. Brush it with water, and wrap it around the rose center. Do not seal it against the center. There should be a natural gap. Leave it.

8 ounces cream cheese 1 stick butter

4 cups confectioner’s sugar 2 teaspoons vanilla extract

1. In a large bowl, beat together the butter and cream cheese with an electric mixer. 2. With the mixer on low speed, add the powdered sugar, one cup at a time, until smooth and creamy. 3. Beat in the vanilla extract.

Step 4 Brush one of the “arms” and the opposite “leg” with water and bring in to cover the center bud. Finish with remaining petals. Gently shape rose by pressing the bottom. Pinch off any excess fondant at bottom. Gently roll back petal edges of the outer layer of petals to shape. T H E M O N SE Y V I E W /

ALMOST DAIRY BLUEBERRY MUFFINS 1 stick margarine 1 1/4 cups white sugar 1 teaspoon salt 2 eggs 2 cups flour 2 teaspoons baking powder

2 cups fresh blueberries Â˝ cup soy milk or almond milk 1 tablespoon vanilla extract 1 tablespoon lemon juice

1. Preheat the oven to 375 F. 2. In a large bowl, mix together the margarine, 1 1/4 cups of sugar, and salt until smooth. Beat in the eggs one at a time until well blended. 3. In a separate bowl, stir together the flour and baking powder. Spoon some of this mixture onto the blueberries, and toss to coat. This will keep them from sinking to the bottom. Stir the remaining flour mixture into the bowl with the eggs, alternating with the almond milk/soy milk, vanilla extract, and lemon juice. 4. Gently fold in the blueberries. 5. Spoon the batter into the muffin cups, filling to the top. Sprinkle a little sugar over the tops of the muffins. 6. Bake for 25 minutes in the preheated oven, or until muffin tops are golden brown, and the tops spring back when pressed lightly. Cool for at least 10 minutes before removing from pan.

D SEASONE CHEF The dairy recipes can be made with non-dairy ingredients for a parve version, and the parve version can become delectably dairy by swapping the parve ingredients for their milchige counterparts.

Step 5 Take one of the plastic covered blossoms and and begin by making 1/2-inch-cuts between each petal. Soften petal edges. Cup the two “arm” petals inward, and cup the 2 “leg” petals and “head” petal slightly outwards. Cup the center, brush with water and thread onto toothpick. Brush the two “arm” petals with water and attach, centering over the seams of the previous two petals.

Step 6 Brush remaining petals with water and attach to sides of other petals, spacing evenly. Shape the bottom and pinch off excess fondant as needed.

DELICIOUS NON-DAIRY CHEESE FROSTING All I can say is, “You won’t believe it’s not dairy!” Sit down, relax, and indulge! 5 cups confectioner’s sugar 1 Tofutti cream cheese

¾ cup margarine

HEAVENLY BLUEBERRY CUPCAKE GLAZE 1 cup confectioner’s sugar

¼ cup blueberries

Prepare the last blossom by making 1/2 in. cuts between each petal. Soften petal edges. Cup all petals to face outwards. Cup center and brush with water. Thread toothpick through the center of the blossom. Brush petals with water if needed.

Step 8 Turn rose over and let petals fall naturally into place. Gently press petals against the base to attach and let dry. Remove from toothpick and top your cupcakes for a perfect Purim presentation!

NEVADA AND SOUTH CAROLINA February 20th was a big night for Donald Trump. At 32.5%, he not only won South Carolina by 10 points, but he also took all of the state’s 50 delegates — as South Carolina is a winnertake-all state. He now leads the delegate count by a large margin. Going forward, if the projected numbers remain the same, he is the most likely candidate to win the republican nomination. Rubio and Cruz came in at about 22% each in a virtual tie, with only .2% difference between the two. For Rubio this was considered a major accomplishment, as just a week ago the polls showed his support in the low teens. He managed to grab about 10% of the state’s voters - as well as many important endorsements — including a popular senator from South Carolina — as well as the governor. Still, the odds that he and Cruz are betting on are a quite slim. In one outcome, either Rubio or Cruz steps aside with a promise of a job, and lets the other one win. In

another, it becomes a three-person race with no definite winner prior to the convention, which would lead to a brokered convention. Both Rubio and Cruz are assuming that Trump’s support tops out at about 35%, which is the most he’s ever managed to win. That leaves 65% of the republican voters up for grabs. The two campaigns will now be battling to try and secure those remaining votes. Throwing a wrench in their plans is the fact that Kasich and Carson remain in the race, carving away a few important votes which can give them the desperately needed edge. There are loads of speculation about the plans of those two. Neither one has a chance of winning the nomination. They both came in at less than 8% in South Carolina and are polling at similar levels in the upcoming states. Kasich’s strategy might to be one where he is aiming to be the vice presidential pick by Donald Trump. They are similar ideologically, and by his staying in the race he is helping Trump LS keep his lead over Cruz and Rubio. Carson seems not to have a plan at all. Some have said that he has a lot of people working NEVADA for him in Nevada so he doesn’t want to suspend his campaign TRUMP 42.0 until after that election on TuesCRUZ 20.0 day, February 23rd. The biggest loser of the night RUBIO 19.0 was Jeb Bush who came at 7.8%, KASICH 7.0 which prompted him to suspend his campaign. It was a difficult CARSON 6.0 loss to swallow, especially because Bush was considered one SOUTH CAROLINA of the strongest candidates only one year ago, and the one that CLINTON 57.4 was likely to win the nomination. South Carolina especially SANDERS 33.3 was one of his strongest states. Hillary Clinton also took

In addition to the 2,383 regular delegates the democrats have at their convention, they also have 712 superdelegates, delegates who do not get allocated according to their state’s voters, but rather choose which candidates they will support. Superdelegates get to decide whom they support at the convention. Many will pledge to support a candidate early on in the election and then change their minds during the convention according to the popular vote. Because Hillary Clinton, and of course her husband, the former President Bill Clinton, are such important figures in the Democratic Party she has already managed to get the vast majority of the superdelegates to pledge their support for her. So, although she has

Clinton held a superdelegate lead, but those delegates ultimately voted for Barack Obama who was the popular choice. It is in their own best interest, since the winner has a better chance of securing the White House for the Democratic Party, but many voters see their existence as proof of a government who works for itself rather than the voters. This perception might actually help Sanders in his campaign as he is running as the outsider, bringing a revolution to politics.

Kollel Chatzos Opens World’s First Nighttime Bais Horaah This past Thursday, an inspiring mamed took place in the Toshnad Shul in Monsey, NY as Kollel Chatzos opened the world’s first nighttime Bais Horaah! Two of the kollel’s most devout talmidei chachamim, R’ Berel Wieder, dometz Sanz-Klausenberg and R’ Avraham Yitzchock Lunger dometz Skvere have been crowned the dayanim of Kollel Chatzos in Monsey. Rabbi Avraham Tzvi Wosner, grandchild of the Baal Shevet Halevi, praised this noteworthy venture, saying, “Just this past night, at 2:30am, I received a call with an important sheilah. Unfortunately, I only saw it in the morning. America needs a Bais Horaah during the night! There should never be a moment in the day when a yid shouldn’t have who to turn to with a question!” Then, Rabbi Nechemye Hoffman, the menahel and founder of Kollel Chatzos, took the dais. With unbridled emotion he thanked Hashem for making this moment a reality. Kollel Chatzos is America’s only nightly kollel with 95 talmidei chachamim in 4 locations who

immerse themselves in Torah every single night, and is long known for the yeshuos and

protection it brings to those who partner with these selfless talmidei chachamim. 3 With the way I excitedly pack up Nachman and nosh for the way, you’d think we are headed for a grand trip to the mountains. We are actually traveling to Dr. Arthur Walker, a neurologist and psychiatrist. (And by the way, I also pack up $200 for the session.) Someone will listen to my troubles. Someone might take them seriously. Someone might even believe me. As if that’s what I’m paying $200 for... But honestly, all that is important enough to make me giddy with excitement. Aryeh and I sit across from Dr. Walker at his desk. The doctor looks at us expectantly. Aryeh gives me the floor. I clear my throat. Have I got a story to tell! Dr. Walker listens intently, widening his eyes every few sentences. “Aha. Some boy we have here. Huh, Nachman?” He scrutinizes Nachman’s face for a full minute. I wonder if he finds the letters ADHD anywhere. He tells Nachman to do a few activities, like walking in a straight line and some other things. “At the age of three and a half we cannot administer any of the standard evaluations. Right now, his parents’ descriptions will supply the data. Nachman is obviously endangering himself and his environment. To leave things be - is to play with fire.” I exhale slowly. Validation. Support. Help is on the way. Dr. Walker leans forward, folding his arms over the table. For the first time I notice that he has no computer. No wonder he really listens! “You are describing classic ADHD behavior.” A.D.H.D. The neurologist and psychia-

For the first time, I notice that he has no computer. No wonder he really listens! trist said it. Nachman very possibly has ADHD. I don’t know whether to laugh or cry. I am overwhelmed and relieved at the same time. How will I manage with a child with this diagnosis? But goody, there is something to do with Nachman! “So…what do we do about it?” “At this point, the only alternative is to medicate him.” “And then?” Dr. Walker smiles. “There’s a lot you can do. Take a look at this book I wrote here,” he gestures to a small bookshelf at the end of the room, “about brain exercises that can wean one off of Ritalin.” I pick up the book and already feel dizzy. Will I have to read this whole book, and oh no—really do what it says? “I jog for an hour each morning and function perfectly without Ritalin,” Dr. Arthur says. I stare. “I have ADHD, and so do my two children.” ADHD? A doctor??? Aryeh slaps his wallet on the table. “How much does the book cost?” I clench my fists. Yes, brain exercises and no medication sounds nice. But it’s also hard work. And Aryeh’s serious about doing it. I can only think now about one thing: “So you’re giving us a prescription?” Dr. Walker answers Aryeh’s question and then mine.

And the kernel of a conflict is formed: are we running away from medication or to it? I hug the prescription as we leave Dr. Walker’s office. My ticket to sanity. I murmur tefillos as we get into the car and head home. I fight back tears as I sign on the prescription at the pharmacy. I lift my eyes in thanks to Hashem as the pharmacist hands me the small bag with my prize. We wait until Friday to use the Ritalin for the first time, so we can monitor Nachman’s reaction to it for a long stretch. When Nachman comes home at 12:30 I help him drink a cup of juice mixed with the crushed Ritalin. I leave Aryeh to deal with a hollering Nachman who keeps trying to jump on Suri’s back as she crawls around. I retreat to my room, hold my head in my hands, and cry. Here I am, at the cusp of a turning point in my life. I cry with hope, disbelief, and also fear. What if the Ritalin doesn’t affect Nachman? In just a half hour I will know. I say Tehillim, pleading with an intensity I haven’t known in a long time. Shakily, I walk out of my room. Nachman is standing and watching Aryeh set the candlesticks on the table. He is standing. Watching. Not jumping, running, or throwing. I want to jump and howl and laugh.

I spend the next few hours in a daze. I feel like I’ve stepped into someone else’s life. Aryeh leaves to shul early, for a change. There’s no need to babysit me now. I light candles. I cover my eyes and daven. Instinctively, I keep peeking out. But everything’s okay. Everything’s okay. Suri is crawling around contentedly and Nachman is looking at the artwork he brought home from school. I just have to spread the joy. Instead of taking our steady spot at the swingset, I decide to visit Itty across the street. Will a tamed Nachman finally earn us the status of welcome guests? Nachman walks up the flight of stairs to Itty’s house. Walks. He knocks on Itty’s door with me. Knocks, not bangs. Nachman plays with a toy with Itty’s son. Plays, not throws and breaks. And I sit on the couch and schmooze with my friend. Have I joined the normal world? Our Shabbos meal begins like a fairy tale. The candles shine brightly, the kiddush cup gleams. Shabbos peace reigns. As I set the soup bowls on the table, there’s a sudden electric buzz in the room. Nachman jumps up from his chair with a roar of laughter, yanks the bib off the baby’s neck, and throws it straight at the candles. It misses by an inch. The medicine wore off. Our home is a danger zone again.

Dealing with Doctors As I’m writing this article, I’m trying to tame my own fears about my children’s doctor appointments scheduled for tomorrow. It’s not a fun chore, and with young children it seems that quite a bit of time is spent in the waiting room. Is there any way to survive a visit intact? Mothers of special needs children may very frequently find themselves at the doctor for a diagnosis or treatment. The best tip a parent gave me when she was going for a diagnosis was “Can you daven for my child? Here’s her name.” As children grow, they learn to tolerate appointments better, but until then, use these smart tips, and don’t forget to daven!

1. FINDING DR. RIGHT You need someone you and your child will feel comfortable with. I have met my share of doctors with poor bedside manner, who make parents uncomfortable and can’t handle special needs children, despite their training. It’s up to you to find someone with a child friendly office and persona, where your child will at least come in happy. You may also want to discuss any strong feelings you

have about vaccines and antibiotics before you settle on a doctor, to see if s/he is on board with your philosophy. Check the average wait and appointment time. Ask the doctor how after-hour emergencies are handled.

2. PREPARE FOR THE APPOINTMENT Think about your child’s milestones and medications before the visit. Doctors tend to do a quick review of children’s development, so now is a good time to bring up concerns such as, “Should Esther be walking already?” Consider any family history facts relevant to your visit. You may want to review chronic medical conditions, allergies, or drug histories. You can write specific information down and have it handy. Take notes during the appointment to ensure you get the medication and dosage right. Be aware, if you have more complex issues, such as a child acting up in school, you may have to set up a separate appointment. Schedule the appointment time wisely. The first appointment of the day is probably easier than the last. Also think about timing in regards to meals and energy lev-

els; try to schedule when your child (and you!) are fed and wellrested.

3. EASE THE FEAR Read children’s books to your child about going to the doctor. You can add your doctor’s and child’s name to make it seem more realistic. The more your toddler knows about doctors, the less trepidation she will feel when faced with them, however, don’t over-explain or get too technical. The important point to get across is that the doctor is a nice person who keeps children healthy, helps them get better when they do get sick, and his office is a safe place. Another way I talk about doctor’s visits: Use dolls or stuffed animals, and play doctor. Add a toy doctor’s kit for a realistic checkup. Let your child do a checkup on you. I show children various instruments, and how they are used to examine the ears, throat, heart etc.

4. DON’T SCARE THEM OFF Are you the mother who always says, “No, it won’t hurt?” That may very well just be arousing your child’s suspicion, and you are teaching your child to not accept your assurances next time. Also, never use the

doctor or medicine as an empty threat. If you don’t do XYZ (put on your coat, take your vitamins) you will have to go to the doctor for a shot. It may work and get your child to do what you want, but will also make him think of the doctor as a punishment. Acknowledge your child’s fears, and let her know that you understand.

5. WAITING TIME Waiting time is usually difficult with children, especially for those with special needs. I’ve played I spy with clients while waiting. It’s a good time to teach social skills and the rules of people watching. No staring, no pointing and no loud comments. I also use waiting time with children to develop cognitive skills by pointing out colors of clothing and items, empathizing with others look sad or angry, and recognizing and acknowledging feelings. For older children, try a game of “What if?” What if the school bus doesn’t come? What if you were bumblebee? What if it was summer all the time? There is no right or wrong answer. Encourage positive thinking. Plan a special treat after the visit, and focus on that during the appointment. A trip to the grocery, local park, or a friend

will give your child something pleasant to think about during the appointment. Follow through with the plan — even if your child acts up — so your child will have a pleasant memory of the doctor visit the next time around. Perhaps your child can hold a treat during a shot.

6. KNOW WHEN YOU NEED HELP. Can’t tolerate the sight of blood? You might manage better if a friend, relative, or your spouse is with you or takes over for you. Discuss your concerns and options before the doctor’s visit, so you are both on the same page. Know your limitations and schedule your appointments accordingly. (A bar of chocolate for yourself, packed in your pocketbook, definitely won’t hurt either!) Hoping for a happy and healthy rest of the winter!

We start every bedroom the same way! Strip the beds of linen and wash linen in the machine. Remove bedding. Air bedding out or wash as per instructions. Remove curtains. Wash the curtains after the linen is has finished. Keep the machine busy!

CLOSET AND DRAWERS:

As in the master bedroom, the closet will take up the bulk of your time. Leave 1 ½ hours for d’cluttering and organizing, and a half hour for cleanup. a. If you stripped your bed, lay a plastic tablecloth on your bare mattress. (If you choose not to, don’t worry — your shvigger will never know. Okay, that’s an old joke, but she really will not know.) Empty the closet. If your children are there to help you sort their stuff, work with one child at a time. b. SORT: One garbage bag is for damaged clothing and shoes — or accessories that you don’t know exactly what purpose they serve. Another garbage bag is for stuff to be donated. If there is something that you want to keep and your daughter doesn’t, or vise versa, put it in a separate pile. When you’re done sorting everything else, get back to that pile and you’ll win some and lose some. Meaning, out of 10 things from the pile, half goes and half stays. c. Designate a place for everything: clothing should be hung facing one direction. The following order gives the neatest appearance: long robes, dresses, blazers, shirts, bulky sweatshirts, tops that need hanging, and skirts. • Coats and rain jackets belong in the coat closet. • Seasonal items belong in storage. • Delicate sweaters, shells, thin tops, should be folded, and put away according to style, color or type. • Shoes: I firmly believe that as much as teenagers want (sorry, I mean NEED) lots of shoes, it’s actually the number one item that clutters up a closet. I’ve included a few pictures of shoe racks. There are loads to choose from! If you don’t have space for all of your shoes, then you don’t need so many.

• If you have shelves in your closets, get bins for your hosiery, etc. If you have drawers, get dividers. Get a hanger for your belts, or you can use a few hooks along the inside of the closet wall. • These hooks can be used for anything! I love them for scarves, belts, necklaces etc. • Have a shelf, or drawer designated for each child’s paraphernalia. I give one bin per child. Nice nick-nacks can be displayed on the dresser or desk. Don’t overdo it. It gets crowded and you have more to dust.

CEILINGS AND WALLS

• Dust your ceilings. Pay attention to those corners! Work your way down. Depending on what light fixture you have, you may want to take it down, or just wash with a gentle cleanser. Make sure it is completely dry before you put it back. • Wall art: Never spray directly on the frame. Wipe down with a slightly damp rag. • Dust blinds with a damp cloth. • Wash windows and window sills. • Your curtains should be out of the machine by now: Hang them up.

FURNITURE • Turn over mattresses for even wear. Clean bed frame. Move beds. Clean under bed. • Dust and polish the dresser, drawers, nightstand, and lamps. • Ah! The linen smells fresh and clean. Your kids can help you with putting the linen back on. Pillow fights are allowed at this time...cause you’re almost done!

And everyone asked, “Huh? How do we manage without a garbage can?” A master bedroom is called “master” for a reason. It takes a few days to master not having one, but you won’t miss it, I promise!

Melaveh Malkah Arranged In Honor of Vaad H’Eruv Volunteers a Smashing Success Away from the public eye, Vaad H’Eruv’s volunteers perform their sacred work, carefully examining the eruv week after week to ensure the highest level of shmiras Shabbos in our town. Motzei Shabbos Parshas Teruma was the first time their efforts were publicly acknowledged at a melavah malka with a threefold purpose of chizuk, guidance, and appreciation. Local askanim who help out

with the municipal aspects, obtain permits when required and see to all legal matters, were also invited to join the event, among them Rockland legislature Reb Bentzion Weider, Reb Avraham Baruch (Abe) Rosenberg, and Good Sam liaison Rabbi Yisroel Kahan, who received accolades for his “round the clock” work. The event was chaired by Vaad H’Eruv’s fundraiser, Reb Volvi Katz, who commenced the affair by sharing with the assembled that while this particular night may seem inauspicious, due to the freezing conditions and whipping winds outside which left the temperature well in the negative range — to these volunteers, weather is not a deterrent; they stand at the ready

in the frigid cold and sweltering heat waves to service the community. T h e r e a f t e r, the esteemed, renowned Rav of Slonim, Harav Hagaon Shlomo Pinchus Molowitzki shlita stepped up to the podium, uplifting the assembled with a heartwarming talk. Due to space constraints, we will detail just one point he made in his beautiful speech. He said that while today’s day in age, Klal Yisroel has in its ranks countless chesed organizations, it wouldn’t occur to anyone to refer to Vaad H’Eruv as such, which, in reality, is a chesed organization of the greatest form. These chesed volunteers aid each member of the community, of every age and affiliation, with mesiras nefesh by examining the eruv in its entirety each erev Shabbos, never missing a week, be it during a busy yom

tov season, and even Bedikos Chometz night. The climax of the evening, was when the Rav of Vaad H’Eruv, Harav Hagaon R’ Yechiel Steinmetz shlita, inspired the audiences with his talk about the chashuvos of shmiras and oneg Shabbos — and the crucial part the eruv plays in them. He emphasized the responsibility that each eruv volunteer carries, and then he reviewed important halachos regarding the eruv. This fulfilled an important goal of the event, which was to bring clear guidance to the dedicated volunteers who participated in the event. Rav Steinmetz then launched into an expression of appreciation, conveying the gratitude he and the greater Monsey community feel toward these dedicated volunteers, with their director Harav Reb Yosef Feig shlita at the helm. He carries the responsibility each week and ensures that each volunteer fulfills his duties and reports back

to him on every move regarding the eruv. Rav Steinmetz also used the opportunity to thank the askanim who have in the past aided in obtaining permits, and who are committed to continue doing so in the future: Reb Berish Freulich, Legislature Benzion Weider, Rabbi Avrohom Baruch Rosenberg, and especially Rabbi Yisroel Kahan. Last but not least, the dayan expressed his heartfelt gratitude to the “Man of the Eruv” himself, the esteemed Reb Betzalel Dovid Rosenberg who a decade ago, with his own hands, constructed the entire eruv of Rockland County. Until today, he travels each Friday around Monsey to repair any part of the eruv in need of fixing — in the heat

and in the cold, often working hours upon hours — until he feels calm that Monsey Yidden can have a kosher, lechtige Shabbos. May Hashem grant him success in all his endeavors and further siyata d’Shmaya. Following Birchas Hamazon the event came to a close with ecstatic dancing of the devoted volunteers who had absorbed much chizuk to further their sacred work, be’zras Hashem. A special thank you goes to all who stand at the right hand of Vaad H’Eruv throughout the year, who arranged this suc-

FAST FACTS • When cupcakes first made their delicious appearance on this planet in 1776, they were called “number cakes,” due to the easy-to-remember method of measuring out the ingredients. The typical recipe was: 1 cup butter, 1 cup milk, 1 spoonful baking soda 2 cups sugar 3 cups flour 4 eggs • The convenience of the cupcake in the 1700s was in its ability to bake quickly. Back then, baking was done in hearth ovens (similar to the ones you’ll see in a matzah bakery), which quickly baked the outside of cakes — often resulting in a burned outer layer — while more time was needed to to bake the inside. Smaller cakes meant quicker baking — and a soft, delicious, non-burnt mouthful of goodness. • Only in the 1920s did the ingenious idea of frosting become popular. Oh my, cupcakes without frosting??? Your frosting options were either chocolate or vanilla. • The world record for the most cupcakes consumed in one sitting is 29 cupcakes in 30 seconds. Please, please, I beg of you — do NOT try this at home! • Then again, the world’s smallest cupcake was only 1.5 centimeters tall and a mere 3 centimeters wide… 29 of those ain’t so bad! • In case you’re curious, there actually is a National Cupcake Day for those of you that can’t get enough of these cake-y creations, celebrated every year on December 15th. • Six cities in America feature an ATM machine that tastefully dispenses cupcakes rather than money. Unfortunately, they are not kosher. Business idea, anyone? • In the UK cupcakes are called “fairy cakes,” and feature a lighter icing compared to the standard American buttercream, and a body that is made out of sponge cake batter. • In Australia cupcakes are called “patty cakes.” Ah ha… now that explains a question I’ve always had… • The world’s most expensive cupcake sells for $1007 and is made with Italian cocoa, Ugandan vanilla beans, and 23-carat edible gold. You know, just in case you have some extra pocket cash lying around… and happen to be totally off your rocker!

I used to wish to drive and have my own car, but then I realized that if I would be driving I would be stuck at the wheel and not be able to take care of my children’s needs. This helped me see things in the right perspective.

The traffic in monsey is totally overrated. I’ve never been stuck in traffic so long that I didn’t want to drive somewhere... (Rush hour traffic, shopping center traffic, school bus traffic and Friday traffic are all normal things that happen no matter what city or town, or even hicksville you go to.) What happens is, that people calculate the time to get somewhere from however long (or short) it takes them to get there when the roads are empty. But if you’re going to the same place in the morning school bus/ carpool time, you can’t expect the roads to be empty for you. Same goes for Friday... It’s not a matter of getting stuck in traffic, as much as realizing that the roads are busier at certain times, and you will need a few more minutes. So leave a drop earlier. Don’t blame Monsey.

Tips and Solutions for Keeping Your Car Clean: The majority of Monsey View readers find that keeping a bag or small trash can for garbage, and emptying it periodically keeps the mess under control. Some pass around a bag after children eat in which garbage can be disposed, while some just institute a “no-garbage-on-the-floor” rule. Bags should be kept handy for cleanup and just in case someone feels nauseous. Many readers felt that eating should be avoided altogether, or when that’s not possible, kids should be encouraged to eat only foods that don’t leave crumbs. One reader avoids sticky food, while another recommends car trays for children to eat on. To prevent mess from piling up, it is recommended to do a quick sweep through the car each time you travel, and purge the garbage from the vehicle. Some clean up before they leave the car, some always take along some stuff that doesn’t belong there when exiting the car, and one says it succinctly: “Take out what you bring in.” Some drivers keep a portable vacuum cleaner handy for the crumbs, and one reader suggests vacuuming the car once a week at the gas station. “All you need is some quarters,” she says. One reader summarized it well. “Don’t treat your car like you live there. Keep the mess to a minimum.”

To Keep Children Quiet And Happy in the Car: CD’s, both music and stories, seem to be the number-one entertainment for children during travel. Some suggested that a special CD be exclusive for the car, so that the novelty should interest the children. One mother shares how each child gets a turn to hear his or her favorite song. Games and activities were also high on the list, such as: • Counting cars: how many cars of a certain color, of a certain make, of a certain model do you see pass? • Play color games (find something, someone with color red) • ABC games with license plates or road signs. • Playing word games, such as listing: “Words that start with the letter F”; “Items that belong in the fridge”; etc., giving each child a chance to list them. This, of course, should be led by an adult other than the driver. • Rubik’s Cubes can keep children busy and happy. • Window crayons for kids sitting near the window. Food is also a biggie in keeping children (and adults!) satisfied, and many opt for snacks that don’t make a mess. Some parents feel that engaging the children in conversation is what really takes their mind off the boredom. And there’s so much to point out to them - bridges and landmarks, license plates of different states, and the niflaos haBorei all around. Some families enjoy to sing songs together, and to stamp their feet to the beat, while some wonderful mothers out there captivate their children by storytelling. The Blizzard of ‘96 paralyzed Monsey; how was I to get home? With both awe and apprehension, we peeked through the doorway of the simcha hall as the sheva brachos meal drew to a close. The snow was falling thick and furious, and everyone was anxious to find themselves safely in the confines of their own cozy four walls. The mechutanim had left a while earlier, (as early as politely possible) since they still needed to weather the drive back to Boro Park. “You’re coming home with me,” my brother Sruli cornered me as I stared into the swirling mass of white. And just like that

nieces was a cinch, as I tended to them on a steady basis. I adeptly fed Chana Malky her bottle before settling her for the night and patted Chava’la soothingly when she whimpered softly in her sleep. I hoped I’d make it home later that night, but who was I kidding? The snow, intent on covering every surface in the Tri-State area, left me with no safe way of getting back home. I was here to stay, my Shabbos outfit being the only personal possession with me. I spent the night awkwardly self-conscious in my sisterin-law Gitty’s nightgown. Monday morning dawned, a frosted-over day with snow piled up waist-high. The Monsey roads were enveloped in a deep, white slumber, which was not disturbed by any vehicular traffic. I shlumped around the house all morning wearing a nightgown several sizes too large, drowning my embarrassment in cups of hot cocoa graciously provided by Gitty. My mother frantically called in around noon time. “The sheva brochos planned in Boro Park for tonight was cancelled!” She let out a panicked sigh. In the background, I heard the baby, just three months old, shriek. There were no magical chari-

He had no choice. His brother-in-law’s l’chaim was taking place right then, and at thirteen years old, the oldest girl still in my mother’s house, I was the only option as babysitter. Driving carefully in the rapidly accumulating snow, he let me off at his apartment, parked his car, and continued on with his wife Gitty by foot. Babysitting my adorable

I was here to stay, my Shabbos outfit being the only personal possession with me. ots or swift white horses available to cross the newlywed couple over the snowed-under Palisades — leaving my mother with no other choice than preparing a sheva brochos from scratch in our humble abode. As the big girl in the house, she needed me home to help pull off this impromptu affair. And she needed me now. What to do? The roads were still piled high with snow. No vehicles were out, and it was impossible for me to get home by foot, since the snow reached literally up to my waist. Sruli though, seemed to have a plan. He instructed me to get ready to leave the house, while I scratched my head in wonderment. I dressed myself in the rumpled Shabbos outfit that I had worn the night before, and layered my legs in two pairs of socks, plastic bags, and then boots. I was then mummified with every version of outerwear available. The numerous scarves wrapped around my neck and most of my face created a patchwork of plaids and stripes and scratchy grey wool. Bracing himself against the elements, Sruli, dressed in no less than four(!) pairs of gloves and equipped with a sturdy

metal shovel and a bucketful of determination, advanced to the door. Gitty hovered at the entrance, desperately spreading towels onto the floor to catch the mini snowstorm blowing straight onto her parquet. Shovel after shovel, Sruli cleared a path for me down his walkway to the driveway, and from his driveway to the sidewalk, with me following closely behind. With iron grit that only a devoted son on a mission to honor his mother could muster, he continued shoveling our way, one house at a time, through a shortcut, and then past another street. The knowledge of our mother anxiously holding a screaming infant, desperately awaiting the return of the daughter he had borrowed,

goaded him on. The snow was coming in droves, and big flakes attacking us, as onward we marched, inch by painstaking inch. I huddled deep inside my bulky armor, taking comfort in the knowledge that each laborious step brought us closer to home. It took a half hour for us to finally reach the front porch. We staggered into the house, coated in a thick layer of white, sharply contrasted by our bright red cheeks and noses. My mother sagged in relief when she saw that a capable (although frostbitten) pair of hands had arrived to the rescue.

After lending a hand with the heavy work, Sruli turned on his heels and left the house to tackle the return trip. But he was in luck. It took him but moments to arrive home safely. After all, there was a shoveled path amidst the four-foot snow leading straight to his doorstep.

Human Rubik’s Cube —

• cardboard box (see notes below) • black felt (see notes for size) (or white if you’d like a white-based cube) • 2 red and 2 orange felt sheets • 1 yellow, 1 green, and 1 blue felt sheet

NOTES ABOUT SUPPLIES:

Instructions specific for size 2-6 are in orange, and size 8-12 in blue.

Cardboard box: For size 2-6 use a 10” x 13” cardboard box (We used a case-size Beer Mayim Seltzer box. It’s only a few inches tall, not the height of a full box). For sizes 8-12 use a 11 ½ in x 15 (We used a small Rockland Kosher box that comes without flaps.) If you can’t find these boxes, use any box that’s closest to a square shape and adjust the measurements according to your box size.

Glue: The best fabric glue that we tried was Amazing Goop®. It dries quickly and the fabric remains flexible, although it does have harmful vapors and should be

Felt: For size 2-6 you will need 46”of black felt. For size 8-12 you will need 56” (or 2 yards) of black felt, three sheets each of red and orange, and two felt sheets each of yellow, green, and blue. NOTE: If you are using a different size box than the ones we mentioned, use a tape measure to measure around the entire box, and you will need felt that’s the total amount of inches on all four sides, plus 1-2” extra.

This costume uses a box only to hold its shape. The costume is done in a such a way, that it’s able to be removed from the box, so it’s easier to glue on the pieces, and so that you can wash it or put it away without the bulky box. (And if you get very hot on Purim, just remove the box and wear it without it!)

used in a well-ventilated area. Use a glue gun for the next best results. A third option is Beacon Fabri-tac glue, which worked well on felt.

Cover the table with a disposable plastic tablecloth. Put the cardboard box upside down on the table. Place a bowl (soup plate) or a 8” round baking pan in the center of the box and trace around it with a pen. (It should be about a 6” or 8” circle.)

Try on the box by pushing your head through the hole. If it’s too small, you can make the hole bigger, or add two slits on two sides of the circle. Put the box aside.

Cut out the circle with a gillette/ pen knife, or punch a hole in the center of the circle with a scissors and cut out bit by bit, until the whole circle is cut out.

5 Spread out the black (or white, if you are making a white version) felt on the table. You will now cut the felt that will go around the body of the box. For size 2-6 you will need to cut your felt to a 15”x 45” rectangle. For size 8-12 you will need to cut your felt to a 17”x 56” rectangle. Make sure to leave over the extra felt to be used later in the project! Leave it in large pieces. See tip below.

Put glue along the narrower end of the felt. Bring the parallel end over and stick it onto the glue. You will now have a tube.

7 From the extra felt you’ve cut off you will now need to cut a piece for the top of the costume. For size 2-6 you will need to cut your felt to a 12” x 15” rectangle. For size 8-12 you will need to cut your felt to a 14” x 17” rectangle.

Slide the tube onto the box to make sure it fits snugly around it. Put aside.

Spread the rectangle flat on the table, and place the box with the circle cut-out on the center of the felt piece. Trace the circle onto the felt with a pen a few times until you can see the line.

Cut out the circle and discard.

Now take the box, with the body of the costume (the black felt tube shape) on it, (from Step 6), and spread out the felt piece with the hole, on the top. Make sure both holes are aligned. The felt will stick out about an inch on all sides. Glue it down to the body on all sides. Let the glue dry. This is the wrong side of the costume so don’t worry about the seams.

Now you will make the armholes on the 2 sides. (the sides are the narrower sides of the rectangle). Place a cup or a soup bowl exactly in the center of one side, about 1’’ from the top. Trace a circle around it and cut out the hole. Do the same for the other side

Creative Mortgages by Ann Zeilingold With all the government regulations and the lack of choices in the mortgage industry on viable mortgage program choices, most people tend to get a 30-year fixed or a 15-year fixed; they either take a conventional type loan or a government style loan, like FHA or VA. Prior to the mortgage meltdown, there was a host of alternative mortgage products available. Some of those products have been deemed “toxic,” and for the most part, they are no longer available for the residential homebuyer. Examples of “toxic” loans are 40-year or 50-year term loans, or loans that could incur negative amortization (which is when the minimum monthly payment required is less than the full principal and interest payment.) An example of negative amortization is a loan where the minimum monthly payment required was $1,550, but the full principal and interest should have been $2,250, which created a $600 monthly shortfall. The shortfall was then added to the principal balance, so instead of paying your mortgage down, the balance actually would grow! While these loans are indeed toxic for the wrong borrower, they did have merit for certain specific borrowers. Fast forward to 2016, some old products are rising to the surface, among them “Piggy Back” loans; first and second mortgage closing on the same day simultaneously. I want to share with you a very interesting challenge that a borrower faced and how we solved their challenge in a very clever, creative way with a “Piggy Back” loan. Bill and Naomi are purchasing a new home. They put their

existing home on the market but didn’t want the pressure of having to sell a home prior to purchasing their new home. They have a nice down payment available. These are the numbers: • New home purchase price: $630,000. • Old home list price: $450,000. • Existing mortgage: $88,000 • Current 15-year mortgage monthly payment: $1,588 including taxes Bill and Naomi have $150,000 for a down payment and they have the additional funds needed for closing costs. They want to take out a 15-year loan. They also have the income to carry both houses. The new loan amount would be $480,000. All looked good until I shared their monthly payment with them, to the tune of $4,509 for a 15-year loan. Naomi blanched. Bill gave me a half smile… Naomi said to Bill, “Maybe we should sell first and use the proceeds to pay down the new mortgage.” I asked N ao m i w h a t

Our plan was that when they sold their house, they would net $350,000. They would pay off the HELOC and prepay the first mortgage by $100,000. This would mean that they would finish their 30-year loan in 15 ½ years!! A win-win for the borrowers! Mortgage planning and mortgage structure is key in creating homeownership, especially for the first-time homebuyer. Don’t minimize the importance of forging a relationship with a mortgage loan originator that is a creative mortgage strategist.

monthly payment she is looking for, keeping in mind that the taxes and insurance on the new house are $1,250 per month! She said about $2,500. I figured out that if the payment needed to be $2,500 long term, then the mortgage needed to be $220,000 (if it was a 15year term). I split the loan between two loans. A first loan at $220,000 and a HELOC (Home Equity Line OF Credit) for the difference of $260,000. The intent was that once their current home sold, they would pay off the HELOC. The problem was that the HELOC has stricter qualifying parameters, and Bill and Naomi did NOT qualify for this loan. I did some more math and then it came to me, like a light bulb lighting up. What we ended up doing was structuring the loan in this way: We gave them a first mortgage of $250,000 on a 30-year amortiza-
