CLEAN AND HAPPY
(Re: Quick Cleanup, Issue 389)
I just wanted to say thanks for your Quick Cleanup series, which launched last week. So much of the focus on Pesach cleaning has become about spring cleaning — or even worse, spring cleaning anxiety. I appreciate the sensible and focused approach taken in your series. Instead of triggering a sense of panic or competition, it leaves us less frazzled and pressured and gives us an actionable plan to complete what the halacha actually requires.
The first year I made Pesach, I went to the bookstore to buy some children’s haggadas, and I told the saleswoman that it was my first time making Pesach. She wished me a chag kasher v’same’ach and then added, “Kosher, it will be. The thing you need to be careful about is that it should also be same’ach.”
Your Quick Cleanup series is definitely on the right track!
ALL CLEAR!
(Re: Dumping Grounds, Issue 389)
Breindy Gelb
This is Perel writing in, from last week’s feature on dumping grounds. Since I allowed the entire community into my home to explore the “counter next to the fridge” in my kitchen, I think it’s only fair that I announce that the counter is now completely clear!
I’m not sure whether it’s Pesach coming ever closer that inspired me to clear up the space, or the fact that I revealed my personal

dumping grounds to the public, but whatever the case, I’m pleased to say that the pile of recipes has been dealt with.
Happy cleaning!
SWEET MEMORIES

(Re: Buried in a Sugar Mountain, Issue 388)
“Perel”
I can’t believe no one mentioned the good old nougat roll! That was my favorite. I even kept a wrapper in my photo album since my friends got me a dozen of them before my trip to Israel in 1998. If anyone at Paskesz sees this, please put them back on the shelf. It will be worth it! And if you’ve never tasted one, I’m pretty sure you will never understand the taste of pure bliss.
Thanks for taking us down memory lane. It made me feel

staff should have saved some seats in the front for bubbies. In the end, I asked the principal to help me. She gave my mother a seat reserved for a staff member, and baruch Hashem, my mother enjoyed the play and had much nachas
The second situation hit harder. I was in shul on Purim night. It was a packed shul with about 60 women and girls, the majority of whom were young girls and teenagers. There were a few women in their forties who were standing, and at the last moment, a middle-aged woman I know walked in. She has a large family, and I’m sure she came late because it was hard for her to get out. By the time she arrived, there were no seats left, but no one stood up for her. I watched this take place from the distance, and I was too far to help her. Instead, I was davening that someone should get up for her. You would not believe who gave up her seat — a woman even older who understood that her younger neighbor might just be exhausted. (Afterward, the grateful woman shared that she was collapsing from exhaustion.) Now there were a couple of standing women while the young girls continued to sit. No one meant to be disrespectful; they just did not think, and it did not occur to anyone to get up. Please, mothers and educators of these children: They need to be taught to offer their seat to an older person, and may we be zoche to have nachas from our youth as we all age.

PARSHAS VAYAKHEL-PEKUDEI
Hearts of Gold
The Ramban wonders why nesi’as halev, inspiration of the heart, is listed as the prerequisite to contributing to the Mishkan, while no mention is made of skill. Wouldn’t knowing how to work with the various materials seem more necessary in terms of those setting out to create the Mishkan, keilim and clothes?
REB MORDCHE OF NADVORNA, ZT”L , was once traveling when he stopped in the small village of Maltikov. His entourage quickly set out to find a fitting host within the tiny Jewish community. One local was happy to offer the Rebbe a room, and the Rebbe and his followers began to prepare to daven
The gabbaim asked the host for some candles, as the Rebbe was accustomed to lighting a few candles before davening each day. Reb Mordche was known for his meticulousness with this routine, and many a mofes could be attributed to his heilige licht That particular day was Rosh Chodesh, a time when the Rebbe customarily lit even more candles than any regular day.

But the host did not have any candles. The chassidim searched among their belongings, they knocked on the doors of neighbors, they looked everywhere — but they could not find a single candle for the Rebbe.
The Rebbe sat and waited. Davening simply could not begin. Under no circumstances would the Rebbe neglect his hallowed tradition.
As they waited, the Rebbe shared a story about his uncle, Reb Meir of Premishlan, zt”l.
Reb Meir was once traveling a considerable distance together with his wife. Suddenly, his wife began to feel ill. This had happened before, and she was always cured by drinking milk. She urgently needed a glass of milk to assuage her agony, but they were in the middle of nowhere. There was no town or human being to be seen for miles. Where could they possibly find milk?
Reb Meir stood to the side and began to daven. Suddenly, a man walked toward them, leading a cow behind him. “Would you like some milk?” he asked.
Within minutes, Reb Meir milked the cow and handed his wife a glass to drink. Revitalized, she was ready to continue traveling.
“Do you hear?” asked Reb Mordche of Nadvorna. “The same Hakadosh Baruch Hu to Whom my uncle Reb Meir davened is still alive and well. If He was able to send a cow into the middle of a wasteland, He can certainly send some candles to the village of Maltikov!”
Just a few minutes later, Shimshon, a Yid who lived in Nadvorna, entered the house. He was on his way home from a business trip and was passing Maltikov when he heard that the Rebbe was in town. He decided to stop in.
As soon as he walked into the room where the Rebbe sat, the Rebbe asked, “Reb Shimshon, perhaps you’ve brought with you some candles?”
“Candles?” Shimshon repeated aloud. “I work with soap, and I have a full wagonload of soap to bring back to Nadvorna.”
“But maybe you have some candles, too?” the Rebbe pressed.
Suddenly, Shimshon remembered that he did have a sack of candles. He rushed out to his wagon to bring them to the Rebbe. After unloading sack after sack of soap, he finally reached the lone little pack of candles, sitting all the way at the bottom.
Seeing the relief of the Rebbe and his entourage, Shimshon
The pasuk states, “Every man whose heart inspired him… brought the offering of Hashem for the work of the Ohel Moed… and for the holy garments” (Shemos 35:21).

became emotional. “Rebbe! I must share how these candles landed in my wagon!
“In the factory where I buy my soap, they also manufacture candles. I never went into that line, because I have family members who sell candles, and I don’t want to infringe on their trade. The factory owner has tried to convince me many times to purchase candles, too, but I always refused. This time, as the workers were loading my wagon, the owner came and stuffed this sack in as well. I didn’t have the energy to argue, so I allowed the sack to remain with me, but I really planned to return it next time I came to the factory.
“But now I know why he gave the candles to me, and why I let myself keep them!”
Reb Mordche nodded and concluded, “Yes! Haven’t I told you that the same Hakadosh Baruch Hu who brought Reb Meir milk would bring Mordche some candles?” * * * *
When a person truly sets his mind to fulfill the ratzon Hashem, even if under normal circumstances he doesn’t have the ability to carry through, Hakadosh Baruch Hu will provide him the tools to enable him to stand by his resolution.
Thus, the Ramban explains: When Moshe Rabbeinu was looking for craftsmen to assist with the work of the Mishkan, there was no way he would find the necessary talent among Klal Yisroel. The Yidden had never been involved in such work. Still, there were Yidden who came to Moshe Rabbeinu, wholeheartedly ready to take on the task. Because they so badly wanted to fulfill the will of their Creator, they were endowed with the knowledge and skill to carry it out. Suddenly, they were able to carve and weave like true masters of the craft.
Indeed, it was the nesi’as halev, the inspiration of their hearts, which enabled the work of the Mishkan to take place.

Seeing the relief of the Rebbe and his entourage, Shimshon became emotional

A beautifully set Pesach table: a gleaming white tablecloth, bedecked with the finest silver, polished to a high shine. Kinderlach gather round, excitedly awaiting the moment the Seder will begin. Tatty puts on his freshly starched kittel and admires his brand new Pesach set. The pillow that’s perched on his chair was carefully chosen from Mefoar Judaica’s Sassolino collection.
Did you ever wonder about the process that goes into creating these showstopping Pesach pieces? The amount of time and effort that goes into each one? The careful planning and myriad details that lead to the creation of the Mefoar masterpieces which grace Pesach tables around the world?
LET’S TAKE A TRIP BEHIND THE SCENES: WE’LL START IN BORO PARK, THEN MAKE OUR WAY TO ITALY, WITH A STOP IN ISRAEL ON THE WAY HOME.
MOTZEI PESACH 5782
Pesach is over and your family is busy removing counter liners, washing and drying Pesach dishes, and counting down the minutes until they can bite into a half-raw slice of pizza.
Meanwhile, Yanky Roth of Mefoar Judaica is also busy. He’s thinking of ideas to top his masterful Pesach designs for next year. He takes pride in providing Yiddishe families with beautiful items and accessories to enhance their Yom Tov. He says, “I get feedback from people all year long; they tell me what they love about our designs. I’m constantly thinking how to improve our products and offer them something new and exciting, something different.”
It’s a careful balancing act: Mefoar wants to offer their clients, most of whom are chassidish, up-to-date, modern-look-

ing designs that retain a heimish, royal look, so they are worthy of gracing the most important table of the year. Trendy, yet classy. Modern, yet familiar.
SUMMER 5782

Mefoar Judaica is known for providing their customers with the best, sparing no time, effort or resources to produce the highest-quality items. After brainstorming themes for next year’s Pesach collection with Shlome Steinmetz and Meir Unger of the Pivot Group, Mr. Roth heads to Venice, Italy, to meet with world renowned designer Alessandro Lombardi.
After a few days of intense work, Lombardi presents Mr. Roth with 46 beautifully designed Pesach sets. Some are more modern, others more traditional, but they all have one thing in common: each one is exquisite in its beauty and worthy of being used to enhance the Seder night.
Mr. Roth begins the painstaking process of narrowing down the selection of 46 designs to three. He agonizes and deliberates, imagining his friends and customers sitting at their Pesach tables, leading their Sedorim like kings, surrounded by their extended families.
With the help of his team, Mr. Roth chooses his three favorites and instructs the factory to create a sample of each. It’s not enough to see the beautiful designs; they have to see the actual product, feel the material, and ensure that it’s as beautiful in real life as it is on paper.
SELECTION TIME
The prototypes are sent to Yossi Goldberger, Shlome Steinmetz, Mayer Unger, and Yoeli Waksberger in Israel for approval. They cast their votes and choose the top two contenders that will make it into Mefoar stores worldwide.
“It was extremely difficult to choose,” says Mr. Steinmetz. “All three were beautiful; it was almost impossible to decide.”
In the end, they choose two
vastly different designs: The Sassolino collection is intricate and elaborately embroidered, a piece of beauty that showcases a traditional design with a twist. It appeals to those who want something rich and eye-catching. The Corsiva collection, on the other hand, is elegant and refined, yet breathtaking in its simplicity. Its understated elegance speaks to people who appreciate fine art and modern, clean designs.
ELUL 5782
No project of this size is spared from complications. Every business owner knows that things can go wrong, and Mr. Roth is no different. Once the designs are finalized and ready to head into production, Lombardi discovers a newly-patented, revolutionary Swarovski stone. The unique cut of this gem allows it to shine and sparkle magnificently, unlike any other custom crystal that was previously available.
Mr. Roth says, “We already invested a large amount of money into the stones for the Pesach collection. We were going to use the regular crystals that we’ve been using for years. But once we realized there was something better on the market, we decided to take the chance, because at Mefoar we only go with the best.”
With its 1,180 crystals and close to a million stitches, the Sassolino collection breaks multiple records in the embroidery and production categories of Judaica items. Never before has anything as intricate as this been produced. Each Pesach set takes hours to embroider, and each stone gets attached by hand.
As we head into this wonderful Pesach season, let’s appreciate the extraordinary level of detail and care that goes into creating these magnificent sets. From the initial design phase to the final finishing touches, every step of the manufacturing process requires precision and expertise. As Mr. Roth says, “All to provide you with the best for your simchas Yom Tov.”

Israel’s U.S. Embassy Stops Issuing Emergency Passports for Newborns, Derailing Pesach Plans for Young Families
Getting a passport on short notice has always been tricky, making it tough for parents of newborns to travel shortly after the birth of their baby. A new system that was recently implemented to assist in this scenario has been changed, making it impossible for many new parents to travel from Israel to America for Pesach.
The United States Embassy in Israel announced the new policy on March 10, explaining that short-term emergency passports are intended only for those who need to travel because of the death or ill ness of a loved one. The embassy announce ment explicitly states that bringing “a new baby to meet their U.S. relatives” does not meet the criteria for emergency travel.
Months-long passport back logs have been an ongoing problem in Israel since the onset of the CO VID-19 pandemic, with a new appointment system announced on February 6 ensuring that American citizens fac ing significant issues could obtain emergency passports. But after receiving a large number of appli cations for newborn emergency passports for situations that did not qualify as emergencies, the embassy instituted a new policy precluding new born passport applications by allowing only documented United States citizens to apply for passport appointments, with no exceptions to be made. According to the embassy, limiting appointments at this time will allow those who truly need passports to receive them and will also create additional opportunities for parents of newborns to apply for both first-time passports and Consular Reports of Births Abroad (CRBA), officially documenting them as American citizens.
Chaim V’Chessed, which offers assistance and advocacy to the English-speaking community in Israel, reported in February that applications for passport renewals for children under 16, and for first-time passports and CRBA, are released every Wednesday between 3 and 4 p.m., with appointments made at that time being scheduled for the summer months. The embassy’s previously created video CRBA appointment program is no longer operational at this time.
Chaim V’Chessed has said that it is in talks with the embassy in the hopes of easing the situation to allow pre-Pesach travel to the United States.
Judge Upholds Rockland Redistricting Map

A challenge to Rockland’s latest redistricting map has been rejected, keeping the county’s newly drawn district borders in place for the November 2023 elections.

New York State Supreme Court Justice Sherri Ehrenpreis upheld Rockland County’s motion to dismiss a lawsuit filed in January decrying the new district lines as unconstitutional and a violation of both state law and the federal Voting Rights Act. Filed by Ramapo resident Michael Parietti, the lawsuit argued that the new map gave incumbents an edge, unfairly empowered the Jewish community while disenfranchising non-white voters, and divided communities into multiple districts. The Journal News reported that Ehrenpreis agreed with Rockland County attorney Robert Spolzino, who said that Parietti lacked standing in the case and that his allegations were unsubstantiated, mixing facts with speculation and opinion. Parietti, who has been unsuccessful in several bids for public office and has been openly critical of county government, called Ehrenpreis’s verdict “a true embarrassment to the judicial process in Rockland County.”
The latest district map was created by consultants to ensure that each district contains a similar number of residents, and was approved by the County Legislature by a 13 to 1 vote. As previously reported in The Monsey View, the redistricting was based on population, with Ramapo winning an additional county legislator because of its continued growth, while a decrease in number of Orangetown residents resulted in Orangetown losing one legislative seat. The new districts go into effect on January 1, 2024.
BDE: Sam Colman, Former County Legislator, Assemblyman and Ramapo Town Justice
Days after his passing, Judge Sam Colman, one of the first Orthodox Jews to be elected to public office in New York, was remembered as a family man who lived to help others.

A Holocaust survivor, Colman shared his personal story in his 2018 memoir, Lifted From the Trash Heaps, telling how he became involved in local politics after he and his wife settled in Monsey. After receiving a tax bill for their newly purchased home that was far larger than the amount they had been told they would need to pay, Colman decided to find out more about the local government, ultimately becoming involved in the local Democratic club, which was far from welcoming to Jewish Monseyites at the time. When a new administration came into power in Rockland County, Colman found himself named part-time sewer commissioner, ultimately being elected to the County Legislature when it was formed and winning two four-year terms.
In 1984, Colman was elected to the New York State Assembly, spending 18 years in Albany where he served as assistant majority leader. His final stint in local government was sitting on the bench in the Town of Ramapo Justice Court, a seat he held for eight years before retiring to Florida with his wife Shifra, a fellow Holocaust survivor. Each year during the Pesach Seder, the Colmans took the opportunity to ensure that their children and grandchildren remember their roots and are grateful to be able to live freely.

Colman told The Jewish Press that he penned his memoirs to inspire

others.
“People can learn that you can be in the trash heaps of life, but if you have faith and bitachon and work hard and [are] optimistic, Hashem will help you survive and be able to accomplish great things,” Colman said in 2018.

Colman was laid to rest in the Community Synagogue section of the Brick Church cemetery on Shushan Purim. He was recalled fondly by many, with Town of Ramapo Supervisor Michael Specht describing his passion for justice as he protected the rights of those who appeared before him in court.
Congressman Mike Lawler shared his recollections of Colman on social media.
“Sam was a gentleman and a wonderful representative of Rockland County in the state legislature,” wrote Lawler. “He supported me when I ran in 2020, for which I will be eternally grateful. May his memory always be a blessing.”
Kiryas Joel School District superintendent Joel Petlin recalled how then-Assemblyman Colman always had a warm welcome for him when he spent significant amounts of time in Albany while working on the district’s legislative issues years ago. The two also shared a personal relationship and often sat near each other in shul, with Petlin describing Colman as “a real mensch.”
“He always had a great interest in what he could do to help anyone that ever came to him, and I was privileged to be able to work with him on the Kiryas Joel issues and anything else that came up,” said Petlin. “His level of compassion and interest in helping people was tremendous.”
DeSantis Rips New York as Soft on Crime
Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, who is expected to run in the 2024 presidential election, bashed New York as a place where criminals are allowed to run wild on the streets, while touting his efforts to promote a high quality of life in the Sunshine State.
The New York Post reported that

DeSantis made his remarks while promoting his newly released book, The Courage to Be Free: Florida’s Blueprint for America’s Revival, observing that his state was the only one in the country to emerge stronger from the pandemic. He noted that while Florida collects no income tax from its residents, they enjoy low crime rates and better roads and services, while its children have better outcomes in school.
“What is New York doing by taxing people?” asked DeSantis. “What are they spending all this money on? It’s not improving the quality of life; I can tell you that.”
DeSantis also slammed New York for raising taxes to accommodate bail reform, which puts those who commit crimes back out on the streets.
“We in Florida stand for law and order,” said DeSantis. “We don’t believe in coddling criminals; we believe in prosecuting criminals.”
New York wasn’t the only object of DeSantis’ sharp criticism. The Republican governor also took aim at other progressive cities including San Francisco, Los Angeles and Portland, as well as President Joe Biden’s immigration policies, adding that he would fight for better border security.

CHAMPIONSHIP THE BAKING

CARROT MUFFINS
SUSSY KRAUS
Who knew this beloved classic could be made kosher for Pesach?
INGREDIENTS
7 eggs, separated
1 cup plus 2 T. sugar, divided
1½ cups ground nuts
1 tsp. cinnamon
¼ tsp. salt
Juice of one lemon
5 carrots, grated
DIRECTIONS
1. Beat the egg whites with 2 tablespoons of sugar until stiff.
2. Fold in the rest of the ingredients, and combine well by hand.

3. Pour the batter into muffin cups. Bake at 350° for 35 minutes or until set.
GLAZE
While the glaze is a delicious addition to these muffins, they can be enjoyed without the glaze as well. To prepare the glaze, you must have confectioners’ sugar. Confectioners’ sugar is regular sugar simply ground very finely with a bit of starch (usually corn starch) added as a thickener. If you don’t use ready-made confectioners’ sugar on Pesach, grind a cup of sugar very finely in a coffee grinder, and then mix in 1 heaping tablespoon of potato starch.
TO PREPARE THE GLAZE:
1. Prepare one cup of confectioners’ sugar.
2. Mix the sugar with ¼ teaspoon ground cinnamon (optional). Add hot water, 1 tablespoon at a time, until the glaze reaches the desired consistency.
3. Drizzle the glaze over the carrot muffins.

GRAPE JELLY ROLL
MIRIAM PASKES
This recipe makes more jam than is needed for the cake. You can use the extra to sandwich cookies together, to enjoy with your favorite nut cake, or simply to spread on matzah as a delicious treat for the kids. Keep the jam refrigerated.
GRAPE JAM
1⅓ cups grape juice
Juice of ½ lemon
1 cup sugar
DIRECTIONS
1. In a 3-quart pot, stir together the grape juice, lemon juice and sugar. Bring to a boil over a high flame, and allow to boil vigorously for two minutes.
2. Lower the flame just a bit, maintaining a rolling boil, and cook for an additional 6 to 7 minutes (not more), stirring frequently throughout. Toward the end, keep a close eye on the color and smell; you don’t want it to burn. By now your jam should be thick enough to coat the back of a spoon.
3. Allow the jam to cool at room temperature for 2 hours, and then pour into a container and refrigerate overnight. It will thicken as it cools, reaching the consistency of a thin jam.
SPONGE CAKE
6 eggs, separated
1 cup sugar
Heaping ½ cup potato starch
2 T. oil
1 T. squeezed orange juice
Chopped walnuts or sliced roasted almonds, for garnish
DIRECTIONS
1. Preheat the oven to 350°. Line a cookie sheet with parchment paper and set aside.
2. Beat the egg whites and sugar until you have a very stiff snow.
3. Gently add yolks, potato starch, oil and juice.
4. Pour batter into the prepared cookie sheet, and bake for 20 minutes. Remove from the oven, and allow to cool for 30 minutes.
ASSEMBLY
1. With a sifter, lightly sprinkle the top of the cake with potato starch. Brush off the extra starch.
2. Flip the cake onto a clean piece of parchment paper.
3. Very gently remove the parchment paper attached to the bottom of the cake.
4. Again, use a sifter to lightly dust the other side of the cake with potato starch.
5. Using a sharp knife, gently spread the jam onto the cake in a thin layer.
6. Roll up the cake jelly roll–style, lifting the edge of the parchment to help with the rolling.
Optional: Spread some more jam around the outside of the roll, and garnish with chopped walnuts or roasted sliced almonds.

3. Transfer the filberts to a bowl. Mix them with potato starch and ground almonds until combined. Add sugar and mix.
4. In a separate bowl, mix the oil with the eggs, and then add this to the dry ingredients.
5. Knead the biscotti until a smooth dough forms.
6. Divide the dough in three. Form three loaves on a cookie sheet.
7. Mix the topping ingredients, and sprinkle them onto the loaves.
8. Bake the biscotti for 40 to 45 minutes. Allow to cool (the biscotti will break if sliced while warm).
9. Once the biscotti has cooled, slice each loaf into approximately 18 slices.
Optional: For crispier biscotti, preheat the oven to 250°. Lay the slices flat on a baking sheet, and toast for 10 minutes.

Sometimes it seems like Pesach cleaning is a personality test. There are people who start before Purim (and people who finish before Purim), and there are people who start Rosh Chodesh Nissan. There are people who clean everything and people who scorn “spring cleaning.” Everyone has strong opinions about Pesach cleaning and reasons why their system works and nothing else will work for them.

But what if you had to make Pesach at the last minute, without advance notice?

Could you make Pesach in 10 days?
In 7 days?
In 24 hours?
THREE ACCOUNTS OF WOMEN WHO MADE PESACH UNDER PRESSURE

HERE TODAY, GONE TOMORROW
Chometz and cleaning help disappear
P. Samuels
The pressure of Pesach cleaning was a lot for my mother, a”h, and about fifteen years ago, she decided to skip the whole thing and go to my sister for the entire Yom Tov.

It was a great idea, until ten days before Pesach. My sister’s father-in-law, who had suffered a stroke, was released from rehab — straight to my sister’s house. There was no way my sister could host our parents as well.
I would have loved to invite them to my house, but I was living in such a small apartment at the time that three of our children slept on cots in my dining room. There was no way for me to host my parents comfortably.
My mother was distraught; she couldn’t imagine how she could make Pesach in such a short time. We assured her that we would help her. My sister found a cleaning lady — don’t ask me how or from where. Theresa only spoke Hungarian, but that was fine; Hungarian was my mother’s native language. She had a friend who spoke a bit of English who acted as an interpreter so my sister could make the arrangements.
The next morning, bright and early, Theresa rang my mother’s bell. My mother set her to work in her kitchen, because she wanted the kitchen done first so that
she could start cooking. The oven was done in no time, and then she started on the cabinets.
When my sister and I saw how efficient Theresa was, we decided to keep her even after Pesach. My mother wrote out all the days of the week in Hungarian, and we divided the week among us, deciding which day she would work by which daughter or niece.
The day before bedikas chometz, my mother’s house was spic and span. The windows shone, the chandelier glistened, the floors were all scrubbed clean. My mother decided that she had no more work for Theresa, so when she paid her, she gave her my address and told her to work for me the next day.
The next morning, nine o’clock came and went, but no Theresa. At half past nine I tried the number of her friend, only to hear a recording: The number you have reached is not in service. When my mother tried Theresa’s number, she got the same recording. Both Theresa and her interpreter friend seemed to have fallen off the face of the earth.
When my children heard that the cleaning lady disappeared, they had a simple explanation. “Maybe Eliyahu Hanavi sent this cleaning lady so Bubby and Zeidy could stay home for Pesach. Once she finished helping them, she vanished.”
And maybe they were right.
THE PRESSURE OF CLEANING WAS TOO MUCH FOR MY MOTHER, SO SHE DECIDED TO SKIP THE WHOLE THING

UPSIDE-DOWN PESACH
A baby, a bubby, and a spoiled kimpeturin
As told to Sima Schon
The calendar is always blessedly full of Yamim Tovim, chasunahs, productions and bar mitzvahs, so technically, we’re always just before or after something. But giving birth the week of Purim is probably one of life’s more hectic moments.
With Pesach only four weeks away, it was all the women in the kimperturin heim talked about. They hashed out and rehashed their plans, made calculations and shared their strategies. Some had cooked in Teves, some had teenagers who could pitch in, and others were fretting and barely enjoying their stay.
I was quiet.
Smug and quiet.
I was going to my parents for all the meals. I wouldn’t have to cook an egg.
“Spoiled girl,” some said. But I didn’t exactly feel spoiled the next few weeks. I arrived home with a week-old baby just in time for Purim and had to deal with the costume mishaps, mishloach manos mania, the subsequent nosh divisions and the endless cleaning. Not exactly my idea of relaxation.
But every time the going got tough — the baby was up through the night, my toddler inched too close to the bassinet — I held on to the thought that come Pesach, I would be on vacation.
I cleaned the basics and not-so basics and snorted every time I thought of the doctor’s strict instructions not to lift anything heavier than my baby. Do these doctors know what Erev Pesach is all about?
Exactly a week before Pesach, I was feeling great, and I was on the phone with my mother. It was after midnight, and we were finalizing our Pesach plans. We were discussing the seating arrangements for the Seder when suddenly I heard a crash and a
bloodcurdling scream.
I yelled into the phone, but my mother didn’t answer. It was quiet, and then I heard a low moan.
I hung up with my hands shaking and quickly called Hatzolah. I called another family member to rush over to my house, and then I got dressed and ran over to my parents’ house in time to see my mother being loaded onto a stretcher. It seems that while she was on the phone, my mother lost her footing and fell down a flight of stairs. She’d tried to break her fall but ended up mangling her arm badly.

She was in agony and could barely talk through her pain as she was transported to the hospital. The scans showed a broken arm and a broken hip. It was a relief that she would be fine, but she required immediate surgery and a prolonged recovery.
In between hospital shifts, caring for the newborn and mountains of laundry, it dawned on me: Pesach was on me. And Pesach was less than a week away.
Not only my Pesach, but my parents’, too.
In one moment, my plans turned upside down. Instead of being wined and dined, it was all up to me.
I took a deep breath. And started kashering, peeling, cooking, dicing, running, cleaning, feeding and bathing. Only to restart the cycle again. In between, I took shifts at the hospital and helped my father finish cleaning his house in time for Yom Tov.
Baruch Hashem, my mother recovered nicely and arrived home in time for Pesach, though was in pain and wasn’t allowed to lift anything.
Baruch Hashem, I had managed to get everything done in time.
When the siren blared, I exhaled. And while I wouldn’t try it again, it turned out to be a beautiful Yom Tov.
I HEARD A CRASH AND A BLOODCURDLING SCREAM. I YELLED INTO THE PHONE, BUT MY MOTHER DIDN’T ANSWER

HOME FOR PESACH
The house was flying. And the plane wasn’t
Esther FreidmanOnce upon a time, a week before Pesach many years ago, Moishy and Miri Mallen had a baby girl. Mazel tov!
The timing was a little complicated, but they had a plan. The plan was Bubby. Miri lived in Lakewood, and her mother lived in Cleveland, so the Mallens had booked flights to Cleveland for Yom Tov.
The flights were booked for the day before bedikas chometz. With a domestic flight, they didn’t even need a passport for the new baby. Their minhag was to sell real chometz, so they would just lock up the house for Pesach and wouldn’t even need to clean. How perfect was that?
Seder night was Wednesday. Bedikas chometz was Tuesday night. The flight was scheduled for Monday night.
The kimpeturin came home from the hospital on Motzei Shabbos. On Sunday, she packed.
On Sunday night, it snowed.
On Monday morning, the new mother woke up with a fever.
The new father juggled the two-year-old and the four-yearold and loaded the luggage and packed up the last-minute things and brought his wife Tylenol, and when everything was ready and the kids were in the car, Miri and the new baby got in. The drive to the airport was uneventful.
But their flight was canceled. There would be no more flights before Yom Tov.
So the new father loaded everything and everyone back into the car and drove home.
The kimpeturin, burning with fever, went to bed. Moishy put the kids to sleep and looked around. The house had not been cleaned for Pesach, there was no Pesach food, and bedikas chametz was in 24 hours.

The first thing he did was call a nearby Pesach hotel. The caterer was gracious and eager to help, and the next morning delivered full Yom Tov meals for the Sedarim and seudos for both days of Yom Tov.
Then Moishy got to work. There was no time to clean properly, so he closed off any rooms, cabinets or closets they didn’t absolutely need (which, considering the circumstances, was most). Then he covered the entire kitchen in two layers of silver foil (it looked like a spaceship). He vacuumed the house thoroughly, cleaned the fridge, covered the tables, washed down the chairs, and kashered one oven and one sink.
Voila, Pesach!
On the first day of chol hamoed, the family loaded up the car again, went back to the airport, and successfully boarded their flight to Cleveland, where they all had a wonderful time for the remaining days of Yom Tov.
Even organized women get frazzled by Pesach preparations, but as future Pesachs came and went, Malky and Moishy Mallen never did. Although they start way in advance, they know there’s really nothing to stress over. You can make Pesach in 24 hours if you have to. They know it’s possible, because they’ve done it.
THE HOUSE HADN’T BEEN CLEANED, THERE WAS NO PESACH FOOD, AND BEDIKAS CHAMETZ WAS IN 24 HOURS

Afew years ago, my friend Sury and I, each over our heads in the needs of three very small children, did something quaint. We took up letter writing.
Talking on the phone was out — we couldn’t even hear ourselves think. So we shared bits of news on paper as in the days of yore and felt tickled when, every week or two, a hand-ad -

dressed envelope came our way.
One day, I was shocked to read that “the newest addition to our family, Shimshy, is zooming all over the house.”
What? I may have had Mommy-brain, but I was 100% positive that her baby’s name was Ari, and he was much too young to be crawling. This definitely warranted a phone call.
When Sury stopped laughing she managed to wheeze, “Shimshy is our Roomba! We gave him a name!”
Time has passed, our families have grown, Sury and I now talk on the phone again, but I still don’t have a robot eating my dirt. So I set off to chat with a few owners of robotic cleaners to hear about how this self-driving vacuum machine keeps their homes clean.

Esti Pavel is the first person I talk to. She lives in a cozy four-bedroom condo in Williamsburg with her husband, six children, and their Roborock S7, which keeps the house clean. “It’s my big girl,” Esti remarks.

It doesn’t take the place of a cleaning lady, she is quick to disclaim. But she has half a dozen children under the age of twelve, including four girls with long hair, and the Roborock is needed and appreciated every day. After all, Esti explains, “The original Roomba was developed for pet hair.”
The Pavels did their due diligence on robotic vacs that also mop and eventually snagged a $450 Black Friday deal on the $650-value Roborock S7, adding insurance for five years at $50.

For the Pavels, housekeeping with a Roborock is a joint effort. Mr. Pavel, a musician by profession, finds it pleasant to be greeted by spotless floors when he comes home. He’s undertaken the responsibility for programming and powering the Roborock as his pet project.
“The best way to use this vac is through the app,” says Esti. “I get the house ready at night, message my husband, and he powers it up from work.”
The app is used to set up the robot with a map of the house. With the help of Roborock’s customer service (“Super-duper! Available 24/7, and when something cracked, they sent me a new part”), the Pavels programmed the vac with places to go and areas to bypass. You can set up maps per room and add “invisible walls” — that is, you can program the robot to act as if a specific area is walled and not to go there. Any potentially interfering wires will be skipped if the robot is programmed to do so.
Smooth programming aside, the Roborock does need some time to acclimate. Its first few cleaning sessions are spent getting to know its host house, with all its nooks and crannies, like tables and chair legs and other obstacles. Soon enough, the robovac learns how to navigate around each one.
“The first time we used it, the Roborock acted drunk!” Esti laughs. “It went up and down, right and left… It didn’t know what to do!” Eventually, it “learned.”
I wonder aloud how this machine works differently without the app.
“It’ll just go through the entire house, unless you stop it man-
ually. It won’t know to bypass obstacles. The robot does have some memory, even without the app, but the app offers more features, such as increasing suction strength.”
Going from practical to practical, what does this robot actually do?
In short: It vacuums and washes the floors of the Pavels’ 1,500-square-foot home in an hour.

And what does it not do?
Well, it has a water tank, but it doesn’t allow for cleanser. And you do need to pick up chairs and clear the floors for it to maximize efficiency. While the Roborock just zooms around a bigger item and swallows a smaller one, you’ll be busy emptying its small objects compartment too often if you leave the floor in kid-ravaged glory.
At twelve inches in diameter and only four or five inches high, the robot goes under everything but the bed’s dust ruffle. “Somehow, it senses that as a wall, and I need to pick up the entire ruffle for the vac to go under the bed. I might be able to program it better, though,” Esti says.
It also works better on wood than ceramic, so Esti has it do the kitchen floor twice. Robo upkeep includes checking that the dirt compartment is empty, the water tank is full, and the removable mop is clean.
As a mother of a bunch of little kids myself, my next question is how the kids and Roborock get along.
As with all new things, the excitement peaked at the beginning of the Pavels’ vac ownership. Toddler ran away and babbled excitedly from afar. The others tried to meddle a bit, but the good vac just went around them with robotic efficiency. By now the junior Pavels are mostly accustomed to the robot, which is great — because while it is put to work every night, Esti loves it best an hour before Shabbos. Nothing like bentching licht as the Roborock quietly parks itself at base after a full-house run!
Which begs the question: Did Mr. Vac ever do its job on Shabbos?
“Once, actually,” Esti recalls. “It wasn’t fully charged, made
its low battery announcement, and went back to base. There it charged, and on Shabbos, it geared up to go again.” Doors make things simple, though, so once the machine zoomed into a closet, the Pavels closed it in.
“Any regrets with this vac?” I ask Esti.
Her answer is definite: “None,” she says. “It doesn’t replace cleaning help, but it’s a great addition.”
Actually, in the country it just might take full ownership of the cleaning. Esti is very much looking forward to trying this out in her bungalow. And, knowing the Catskills cleaning rates, she’ll be saving herself a bundle!
Mrs. Chaya G. of Monroe is an empty-nester and proud Babi of many. She lives in a three-bedroom condo, and is decidedly un-enamored with her Roomba.
The novelty wore off fast, it seems. “I got it because it was the new, fun thing. I used it a few times, and it was interesting to watch.”

But in Chaya’s open-plan apartment, the vac is all over the place. “If I want it to do just one room I have to create a border around the area with boxes to block the Roomba from escaping.” And, says Chaya, “If I’m already schlepping boxes, I may as well sweep up!”
I can just imagine her hand waving through the air as she says, “Modernishe tzaros!”
Chaya has two Roombas, one that vacuums and a second

that also washes and is, to date, unused.
“Would I recommend it? Absolutely not. It doesn’t do a perfect job; it’ll go over the same area ten times and leave the next corner untouched. And the prep involved is not for me.”

Chaya says she’s never had funny stories with her Roomba, but the way it finishes its job and goes to park itself is sweet.

Otherwise, she’s not impressed.
Now here’s Sury B., the one who named her Roomba Shimshy. She lives on a single floor with three bedrooms for her five kids. A woman who, by her own admission, treats the Roomba like a collectible and would request it in lieu of a gift, she is up to her third robotic vac and is loving it more than ever.
First came an iLife that, at $160, was relatively cheap. This was
Shimshy 1, and it ran around with no rhyme or reason, sucking in the dirt. Equipped with a wash option, it went drip, drip, drip over a rag. Sury would close it up in one room at a time and let it bang out its random routes. Keeping it in there for long enough ensured it got the job done eventually, though it often did get stuck in furniture or caught in wires.
“That was a tryout and it lasted us around a year,” Sury says.
The next one was a Shark VACMOP. Originally $400, but down to $350 on Black Friday, this model was “pretty good.” Suction power of 2200 resulted in an average performance. It memorized Sury’s house and vacuumed from the front while mopping from the back simultaneously. And because it memorized the floor plan, Shimshy 2 was an improvement, as it went up and down in neat lines. But the problem with Shimshy 2 was its small water tank, which would cause it to stop in the middle of its cleaning cycle for a refill. That translated into Sury not being able to leave the house when it was on, unless she removed the water tank and let the vac just vacuum.
So Sury searched for a better option. Which turned out to be the Dreametech W10.
Retailing at close to $1,000, it vacuums and mops, but much better than its predecessor.

“First of all, the mopping feature comes with two round spinning pads, which works a lot better than a rag schlepped along.” And, this vac also self-cleans! “It washes a bit, then goes back to base to wash off its mop pads.” This is a neat operation unto itself, which involves soaking, suction and a spin-cycle. “And then it continues washing where it left off.”
Neat.

Shimshy 3 does come with a bigger base than the average robovac, one that is approximately the size of a food processor. “I keep it in a corner of my bedroom,” Sury says. Which is as out of sight as she can get, with her four boys. Good thing the Dreametech doesn’t turn on with just one touch, so the boys can’t do much with it.
Shimshy 3, the current king, memorized the house on its first practice run, in which Sury ensured its path was clear.
She did mention, as an aside, that using the app allows you to access more features, like cleaning individual rooms and a stronger suction, but working it manually is working for her.

Sury runs the Dreametech every night. She echoes Esti in saying that it doesn’t replace the cleaning lady. “But my cleaning lady actually doesn’t do floors well, so Shimshy’s great!” It goes under the beds, too, if Sury picks up just a part of the dust ruffle.
“Robovacs are my weakness, and such a huge help,” Sury sums up. “Sometimes I run it twice a day.” Toddler dumping his plate on the floor right after Cleaning Lady leaves sends this mamma into no tizzy as she calmly and lightly wipes up the mess, knowing the robot will wash the floor later.
All this magic doesn’t really work with the kids around, though.
“I’ve tried it on Erev Shabbos, but my boys take it as a personal enemy, to vanquish and kick and press
its buttons.”
One Shabbos, one of Sury’s boys turned Shimshy on — but she just closed the bedroom door and it went back to its base.
Owning any kind of robovac requires basic maintenance, like cleaning its station from time to time, and washing its mopping pads in the machine. But the payoffs are worth it.

“I really enjoy it on Motzei Shabbos, when I turn on the washing machine and robovac. It’s such a geshmake feeling to know that things are happening without my doing anything!”
Of course, this robot connoisseur is updated on the newer model Dreametech, which sucks dirt into a bigger tank, so you empty it less often. But she claims to be okay with her current model, for now.
“I use a broom only on Shabbos,” Sury says.
Now that’s what I call quaint.

In keeping with the Pesach spirit, a car gives us the freedom to go wherever we want, whenever we want, without being enslaved by public transportation schedules. But while our car is there simply to get us from point A to point B, we often nosh as we go. How do we get our chariots ready for Pesach?
I’ve often seen people rushing to clean their cars on Erev Yom Tov. By planning ahead, you can reduce the pressure to beat the clock.
WHEN TO CLEAN
Clean the car’s interior as soon as possible after Purim. This will give you a clean place for your Pesach purchases, and a clear head! Once the car is clean, allow only Pesach-friendly snacks in the car: fruits, veggies and nonchometz nosh.
The amount of time and effort spent cleaning your car depends on whether you are just getting rid of chometz, or if you also want to do a deep and thorough cleaning. The suggestions in this article will help you do both.

WHERE TO CLEAN
Park your car in a place that has access to a hose and an electrical outlet for a vacuum cleaner, if possible.
Cleaning the Interior
Dashboard and Steering Wheel
Dust all areas with a damp microfiber towel or cleaning/baby wipe.
Use a small brush (for example, a toothbrush) to get into vents and crevices.

If you wish to use a cleaning solution, apply it by spraying it onto a soft brush or towel.
Wipe it off with a clean microfiber towel.
If you wish to put a protective coat on the dashboard, use one that is low gloss or no-glare, to reduce reflected light. Apply it by spraying it onto a soft brush or cloth first. Do not get it on the windshield.
To do the steering wheel and turn signal lever, do not use cleaners that may make them slippery. Use soap and water, rinse, and dry well. (Do not soak the signal lever as water may get into the crevices.)
TIPS
Start from the top and work your way down. This way, whatever dust or dirt falls will be cleaned later.
If an interior light comes on when you open the doors, shut it off. You will be keeping the doors open for an extended time, and you don’t want to drain the battery. If you want music while you work, do not use the car’s audio system, as that will also drain battery power.
Before beginning to clean, clear and sort the contents of all storage areas: above the rearview mirror, in the glove compartment, door pockets, dashboard cubbies, center console between the front seats, pockets on the backs of the front seats, and so on. Also do an initial sweep under the seats for trash and odds and ends. To access these areas, move the front seats all the way forward and approach from the back.
To clean the clear cover of the gauges (speedometer and so on) use a damp microfiber towel. A dry tissue or paper towel could scratch the surface.

Windows
The inside of the windshield gets an oily film from smoke and also from vapors created when the plastic/vinyl dashboard gets very hot. To clean, first wipe the windshield with a microfiber cloth.
Rewipe the windshield again either with a wet magic eraser or with rubbing alcohol on a microfiber cloth. If these drip onto the dashboard, wipe up the drips immediately.
Dry with a clean microfiber cloth in a circular motion. Finish with glass cleaner sprayed onto a microfiber towel.
Wipe the rearview mirror with the glass cleaner as well.
Seats
If you want to clean the dashboard and inside of the windows, then do them before cleaning the seats, as the fabric may become damp while cleaning.

Remove car seats and boosters to allow full access to the seats. Car seats and boosters should be cleaned separately.
Vacuum each seat from top to bottom. Use a crevice tool between the seat back and the seats. Be sure to pull down arm rests and the like to access all areas.
Brush the seams and larger areas, and vacuum again as needed.
Where stained, apply carpet or upholstery cleaner to the fabric, and brush it in. Instead of commercial cleaners, you can mix a cup of vinegar and a few drops of dish soap in a bucket with a gallon of warm water.
Rub the mixture into the stain using a brush. Then use a clean, damp cloth to get the soap off the seat. Dry the fabric with an extractor vacuum or microfiber cloth.
Be careful not to use too much water on the seats. Excess water gets absorbed into the foam inside the seat cover, taking longer to dry and possibly causing mold to grow.
Floor Mats and Carpets
Remove the mats from the car. Bang them against the ground or a wall to remove some dirt.
RUBBER MATS: Scrub with soapy water and a stiff brush. Rinse with a hose or pressure washer. Hang to dry.
TIPS
Check between the front seats and the console using a crevice tool or a long, thin ruler. If you don’t have a crevice tool, take an empty toilet paper roll or paper towel tube, squeeze one end into a point, and attach the other end to the vacuum hose with tape. As each section is cleared out, use a damp cloth or baby/cleaning wipe to dust the area. If there is food or dirt stuck on any surface, wet it first with soapy water, and scrape it off.
Toss all the trash, and replace the items you want to keep on board.

CARPETED MATS: Scrub with a stiff brush and then vacuum. Spray with carpet cleaner and brush it in. Rinse with a hose or pressure washer. Dry with a towel or extractor vacuum. Hang to dry.
CARPETS: Scrub with a stiff brush and then vacu-
Cleaning the Exterior
If the day is hot and sunny, wash your car in the shade so the soap won’t dry before being rinsed off.
First, pre-wash the car from the top down with a hose or pressure washer.
Apply soapy water with a wash mitt, sponge or soft cloth. You can use commercial car soap or shampoo. Don’t use dish soap as it can harm the car’s paint. Have a bucket of clean water handy to rinse out the sponge as needed.

Rinse each section of the car with clean water after soaping it. Wipe down with a soft cloth or microfiber towel. This will prevent streaks from air drying.
Remember to open the doors and clean the insides of the door frames.
Use glass cleaner or vinegar and newspapers to clean the windows.
Clean the windshield wipers to remove any dirt from the blades.

um. If there is dried gunk on the carpets, like chocolate or chewing gum, put an ice pack on the stain or gum. After a few minutes, scrape the dirt off with a knife. Spray with carpet cleaner, and brush it in. Dry with a microfiber towel. Allow the cleaned mats to air dry completely before putting them back in place.
Gas and Brake Pedals
Use soapy water and a toothbrush to clean the pedals. Do not use a cleaner that could leave a slippery residue. Rinse off, and dry with a clean cloth.
Trunk
Remove everything from the trunk, and discard the trash. Vacuum the trunk. Remove the cover of the spare tire area. Vacuum and clean the entire area. Take this opportunity to check your spare tire to be sure it is ready in the event of a flat. You should have a jack available, too.

PART 2 OF 4
You’ve finished the toys, laundry room and bathroom. Pat yourself on the back; that was an excellent warmup! Now, as we progress to the heavier stuff, you already have the hang of it.
Let’s brush up on the rules, in progressive order: Things that are very time-consuming to clean and are not needed for use on Pesach — such as toys and books — may be closed off and sold to a non-Jew. Places that don’t have chametz and are not accessible to children do not have to be cleaned, only checked. Places that may have chametz and are accessible to children will be emptied and wiped clean. We do this quickly because our closets don’t contain junk and don’t have to be organized. (And if they do, pencil in a date for organization after Pesach.)

Master Bedroom and Linen
Next up is the room that should have the least chametz in it, and is relatively easy to keep chametz-free for the next
little while until Pesach. Yes, you guessed it: the master bedroom. Soon we’ll chant, “No chametz in the master

KATZMANbedroom.” As much as I don’t like the stress that comes with it, when it comes to the master bedroom, it’s actually helpful. Now may be the time to finally enforce the “no entering the master bedroom without permission” rule that will serve you well in the future.
We’re heading first to the closet where you may store linen as well as your and your spouse’s clothing and shoes. We’ll start with the upper shelves, where you keep clothing and linen that are not currently in use. Inspect them for chametz, without removing their contents. Working with one area at a time, unload the lower shelves and drawers that contain the clothing and hosiery in use. Wipe down the shelves with a damp rag and return their contents. Next wipe down the bottom surface of your hanging space. Yes, that’s the only place that needs cleaning! Shake out the pockets of clothing or coats that you won’t launder before Pesach. The clothing that will be washed just requires turning out the pockets before putting it in the machine. Clean the closet doors with a damp rag.
Empty the dresser drawers, wipe them inside and out with a damp rag, and return contents. If you feel the curtains need cleaning, remove them, launder, and return. (You can hang them up still wet, and they will dry right there.) Otherwise, just shake out the curtains and inspect them for chametz
Next up: the beds. Remove the linen. Brush or vacuum the mattresses on both sides. Stand each mattress on its side on the bed frame or on the floor, and wipe the surface under the mattress with a damp rag or vacuum if necessary. Clean the entire bed frame on the outside with a damp rag. If you have underbed storage, open it and check for chametz.
If you can’t resist, and you haven’t done this in a while, we’ll look the other way if you also want to dust the light fixture. A quick way to do this is to use a duster with a long handle.
Look around your room. Have you covered all the areas that may contain chametz (not dust)? Congratulations!

Seforim and China Closet
On to the dining room. If it motivates you, set a timer for 30 minutes. Remove the silver from the china closet. Spray the glass shelves and mirrored surfaces with window cleaner, and wipe them dry. Do the same for the glass doors, inside and out. Wipe the wooden surfaces with a damp rag. Return the silver to the closet.

As for the seforim, repeat after me: It is unnecessary to bang out every sefer. Have the boys remove the seforim, wipe down the shelves and doors, and return the seforim. If that’s not happening, just dust the exposed part of each shelf without removing its contents, and check the shelves for chametz. Set aside seforim and bentchers that are frequently used with chametz to be sold over Pesach.

Open lower cabinets, one at a time. Remove the contents, wipe down the shelves and closet doors with a damp rag, and return the contents while checking that they are clean.
The rest of the dining room will wait so we can still enjoy respectable and stressfree Shabbos meals at the dining room table up until crunch time.
Now put up your feet and relax a little. At least a third of the house is chametz-free. You’re doing great!

Your Car in Costume

This year you agreed that your car (or other preferred set of wheels) also deserves a costume, and you got to work! Here is a sampling of local drives in disguise.

THE CREATION OF THE BROOM
In 1797, Levi Dickenson, a farmer from Massachusetts, used a bundle of tasseled sorghum grass (also called broomcorn) to make a broom for his wife, as a gift with which to clean their house. How thoughtful!

The bristles of these early broomcorn brooms were simply lashed together, which is why they fell apart so easily. With time and experimentation, wooden handles with holes drilled into them were used to fasten the broomcorn brush to the handle, using wooden pegs.
As the years moved forward, so did the progression to more functional and practical brooms. For example, it was discovered that wire was a more effective way of securing the broomcorn to the wooden handle, rather than tying or weaving.

Broom-making developed as time went on. Eventually, early machinery made it possible for one person to produce two dozen brooms a day — quite a feat for those times!
Today, brooms are manufactured by sophisticated modern machinery. But the production of broomcorn brooms is still a remarkable craft. A single operator sits at each machine to construct every broom individually. The machines, and the methods, have not changed in over 40 years.
Today, there are only about 15 broomcorn manufacturers left in the United States.

MEZHINKA DANCE AKA THE BROOM DANCE
Have you ever heard of packing a broom along with the wedding shtick? Why, yes! In some families, there is a tradition to have a “mezhinka dance” (broom dance) when the last child is married off. At the end of the wedding, or during dancing, decorated brooms are used as dance props to enact “sweeping the children out of the home” and to celebrate that all of the family’s offspring are now settled into families of their own. Mazel tov!
WHICH BROOM FOR YOU?
Despite the advanced technology and materials, the broom model has changed little over the past 200 years. Today, STANDARD BROOMS are made with synthetic fibers that attract dirt and dust particles.

There are also ANGLED BROOMS made of finer, polypropylene fibers with angled bristles. The reason for the angled design is to allow the broom to reach corners and other spots that the standard broom would be unable to access.

And then there are specialty brooms, such as the PUSH BROOM , which has a large head and is generally used for big, open spaces like simcha halls and school lobbies.

Recently, a specialty broom that has gained tremendous popularity is the RUBBER BROOM. People love this broom since the bristles are long-lasting. Users also report that it works on almost any kind of floor and removes dirt better than other brooms. The only disadvantage of the rubber bristles is that while they collect dirt well, they are much less effective with dust.

PREPARE TO BE BOARDED. NO FALSE MOVES, OR WE’LL SINK YE!
WHAT IS THIS ABOUT? WHY ARE YOU ATTACKING ME?
OH, WE’RE TERRIBLY SORRY! WE HAD A REPORT OF PIRATES IN THIS AREA. THOUGHT THAT WAS YOU.
BE SILENT!
NOBODY’S BELOW, SIR. IT’S JUST HIM.
SAY… DO YOU WANT A JOB?
I’M NO PIRATE! YES, I SEE THAT NOW.
JUST ONE PERSON? WHAT HAPPENED TO THE REST OF THEM?
SHALL WE START OVER? MY NAME IS ABDALLAH SAID. MY CREW AND I HUNT PIRATES.
THERE ARE NO REST OF THEM! THIS IS MY SHIP! I BUILT IT, AND I’M THE ONLY ONE HERE!
I’M SHIMON HATZAFONI. PIRATES KIDNAPPED MY CHILDREN!
