MY FAVORITE COLUMNS

Thank you for your magazine. It’s just what Monsey needed. In particular I want to thank you for the Parsha column. I like how Rebbetzin Teitelbaum brings such intellectual ideas, but keeps it so easy to read. I’m learning a lot, too, like about the bigdei kahuna. I also like the Stories In and Around Our Town column. I’m always wondering who the week’s writer is going to be! Keep up the great work. J. K.

STUCK IN THE MUD NO MORE

It was last week Wednesday in the torrential downpour, when on the way home from a simcha, our car literally got stuck in the mud. My husband revved the engine, but nothing doing. The pouring rain didn’t help any, nor did the late hour or the two young children kvetching in the back of the car... Having read the Chaverim series in The Monsey View, my mind went straight to that. “Time for 371NEED,” I told my husband. “You know, the way it was written made it sound like they are truly happy to help, and do so gladly.” With the courage that I had gathered from reading the column, we called Chaverim, and within minutes, a whole bunch of able hands literally dragged our car out of the mud, braving the strong

CREATIVE FOOD FANS

Thank you for enhancing my week in such a great way! My family now loves Wednesdays and makes sure to pick up a copy of The Monsey View. We so enjoy every part, especially the recipes. We had so much fun making the Magic with Gadgets recipes. We couldn’t even wait for a snow day to start experimenting! Leah’s creativity tops it off. On a conference call with my cousins, I kept on hearing about all the different Monsey View recipes that were tried. The most popular ones for us working mothers were the slow cooker recipes. Thank you, C. K.

I experienced an unbelievable story of chesed and yiras Shamayim of our great Monsey community, which is a reflection of Klal Yisroel as a whole. After I purchased items at a local children’s outlet store, I proceeded to go to Auction Mart, where I bought something and

then went home. About three hours later, I got a phone call from someone named Chany from the Children’s Outlet, who informed me that I had left my bag of children’s clothing at Auction Mart, and someone had returned it to the store and I could pick it up from them. Now, mind you, I did not have the bill or anything with my name in the bag. When the saleslady saw the package, she remembered me and she traced my bill from the information in the computer. It showed me another reason why we live among our own people who look out for each other. A grateful resident, Erica Shulman

Hi Sara, I love your column in The Monsey View. It’s full of spirit and good humor. The fun you have organizing is contagious! I can’t send you a before and after picture of my children’s bedrooms because they’re done; do you want a picture of the worst closet in the house, or my nightmarish basement? About the garbage can in my master bedroom can I have it in my master bathroom? Please?! What about the kids’ bedrooms why do they get a garbage can?

Thank you for your warm feedback! Yes, you can send a before and after photo of any closet or room in your home and still be entered in the free closet makeover. A garbage can in the bathroom and the children’s room is fine. You don’t want the kids’ room without a garbage can, trust me! Keep it small, though.

Your Voice Sniffling, runny noses, warm foreheads, weak bodies. Kids with fever, maybe even the flu. Being sent to school, playgroup, or the babysitter. What has this world come to? Are we all so harried that we can’t allow sick children to rest and recover from illness at home? Of course, there are times that it just isn’t an option to keep children home, but I really wonder why people send their sick children — nearly every time the child is sick — to their daycare places. Is it fair to these little kids who have legs that might feel like jelly, a pounding headache, and sore throat to suffer for hours away from home? Is it fair to the other children who may pick up those germs, and then go home to spread it to their families? There are small babies to consider, and people with compromised immune systems. Then again, there are just regular people who need to keep on with daily life. What mother needs to get sick??? I, myself, had a two week-old baby that picked up a virus that my daughter brought home, and was hospitalized for a week, barely able to breathe. I also was terribly sick and it was a very difficult time for our splintered family. Our community is, baruch Hashem so close-knit, that what affects one, affects many. And that includes communicable illness. Of course, not everything can be prevented, but much can. Please dear parents, if your child is really sick with fever, that’s a sign the child belongs at home. Let’s all do our part and try to keep the bugs from flying all around.

As told to: Basya Lev

My husband and I traveled to Boro Park for Shabbos one week. We had rented a van with another couple, who requested that we not leave right away on motzei Shabbos. I told her it wasn’t a problem. Shabbos ended at 5:40 pm, and at 7:30 I called to find out if they were ready to leave. The woman told me that they wouldn’t be ready until 10:00 pm, reminding me that she had mentioned it on Friday. My husband and I didn’t want to wait around so long, so we drove over to where they were staying and gave them money to take a taxi home. Although they didn’t really want to take a taxi back, this seemed to be the best solution — until Hashem showed His hand. While we were on the highway, my husband received a call from a person who asked him if he knew of someone in Boro Park who could drive his car back to Monsey. Excited, my husband told me to call the couple we’d left behind. They ended up driving that car back to Monsey, an arrangement they were happy with, and the next day, they returned the money to us.

Excitotoxins and Weight Take a deep breath and read the following list: ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (I can’t pronounce it either), autolyzed yeast, hydrolyzed protein, propylparaben, potassium bromate, sulfur dioxide, textured protein, EDTA, disodium inosinate, micro particularized, monosodium glutamate, and aspartame. Did you get a headache reading this list? Are you a little light-headed and dizzy? I definitely am, and all I did was type these items! Can you imagine what happens when you actually eat and digest these ingredients? Unfortunately, the above is only a short list of the excitotoxins that are added to foods. There are at least another 60 of them that I haven’t listed! And what do these excitotoxins do? They excite your taste buds so that you crave more of these chemicals! I’ve tried it multiple times; I’ve drank “diet soda” and a short while after, I found myself craving more soda and sweets. These excitotoxins can also enhance the flavor, texture, and shelf life of many food items, which is fantastic if you are in the food manufacturing business. It doesn’t do much for your health and weight, though. So, for today’s article, I want to focus on two frequently used toxins: MSG and aspartame. One reason I chose to write about MSG is because it is so toxic, and

it’s often hidden in foods. My goal is not for you to start fasting, but to eliminate MSG from your diet as much as you possibly can. Remember, it doesn’t have to be “all or nothing” (unless that’s feasible for you); the “less is more” approach is a good way to start. Aspartame is another major toxin that many of you probably consume more of than you should, especially for those of you who are trying to lose weight by way of “diet” or “sugar-free” soda, candy, and ice cream — these items usually contain aspartame. They’re okay every once in awhile, but consider drinking four diet sodas on a daily basis, or a chewing up a whole package of sugar-free gum — that’s a whole lot of aspartame for your brain and body to handle.

MSG – WHAT’S THE BIG DEAL? I really enjoy science, especially when it comes to food and how the body works. However, when I want to relax, I prefer reading simple articles — I like not having to put much thought into them. I would like you to relax with my articles too, so I won’t put you through a complex science class. But as simple as I want this to be, I’d like to mention a few important points: 1. MSG over-excites your brain cells, which

leads to varying degrees of damage (depending on the amount of MSG you consume). 2. Consumption of MSG results in a number of adverse effects, including headaches, fatigue, depression, rapid heart beat, chest pain, and difficulty breathing. Drowsiness, weakness, tingling and numbness, eye damage, and obesity (and craving more food in general) are major side effects as well. 3. MSG is considered one of the worst food additives on the market, although it’s still added to many soups, crackers, meats, salad dressing, and frozen dinners. Some restaurants, and even certain baby foods and formula, add MSG to their products as well. 4. Many different studies reveal that the body uses glutamate, an amino acid in monosodium glutamate, as a nerve impulse transmitter in the brain. There are glutamate responsive tissues in other parts of the body as well, like the heart. The presence of abnormal glutamate receptors is associated with certain neurological diseases, like Alzheimer’s disease, depression, and even heart attacks.

HOW TO DETERMINE WHETHER MSG IS IN YOUR FOOD Food manufacturers are not stupid, and they’ve caught on to the fact that many people are trying to avoid MSG. As a result, do you think they’ve responded by removing MSG from their products? Well, a few may have, but most of them have tried to “clean up” their labels instead. In other words, they’ve tried hiding the fact that MSG is in their list of ingredients – and how do they do this? By using names that you would never associate with MSG. You see, the FDA requires that food manufacturers list “monosodium glutamate” on food labels, but they do not have to label ingredients that contain free glutamic acid, even though this is the main component of MSG!

TIPS TO KEEPING MSG OUT OF YOUR FOOD

refrain from eating out or buying ready-made food. That may not be realistic for you, however, you can definitely reduce the amount of MSG you consume by at least half, by eating fresh, whole foods, and by keeping your eyes peeled for questionable items on food labels.

THESE INGREDIENTS ALWAYS CONTAIN MSG: • • • • • • • • •

Shabbos

Parshas

Vayakhel By Rebbetzin Malka Teitelbaum

Who knew that one mistake could have such long-reaching and devastating consequences? After doing something terrible, Yisroel found himself in prison. There, he thought of his father, his beloved father! In better times, Yisroel could call upon his father whenever his heart yearned for him. But now, all Yisroel could do was write his father letters, or send messages through an emissary who was permitted to go beyond the walls. However, one glorious day each week Yisroel was allowed to be in the visiting room with his father. No walls, no letters, no intermediaries. Can you imagine Yisroel then pulling out a pen and paper to write his father a letter? Of course not. On that day, not only was there no need for paper and pen, even seeing those items in his son’s hand would have pained Yisroel’s father. On that day, the father wanted no reminder of the separation they suffered the rest of the week. On that day, the father wanted only closeness and union. The Sforno (Shemos 24:18) writes that before Klal Yisroel committed the cheit ha’egel, the Shechina would come to people wherever they built a mizbeach and called Hashem’s name. “Mizbach adamah ta’aseh li... avo

48 / THE MO NS E Y V IE W

eilecha... – A mizbeach of earth you shall make for me... in every place where I allow my name to be mentioned I will come to you.” (Shemos 20:21). Now that they had committed this grievous cheit, however, Hashem commanded, “V’asu li mikdash... – They shall make me a Mikdash that I may dwell in their midst.”

Our access to Hashem was greatly diminished after the cheit, and we then needed a special place — the Mishkan — and special emissaries — the kohanim — to interact with Hashem. (Shemos 25:8) The Sforno explains that our access to Hashem was greatly diminished after the cheit, and we then needed a special place — the Mishkan — and special emissaries — the kohanim — to interact with Hashem. The first posuk of this week’s parsha is, “Vayakheil Moshe es kal adas b’nei Yisroel... – Moshe gathered the entire ‘adas’ of the b’nei Yisroel...” (Shemos 35:1) When the b’nei Yisrael said “na’aseh

v’nishma,” each Jew received two crowns, one for “na’aseh” and one for “nishma.” After the cheit, these crowns were removed. The Apter Rav explains that the word “adas” has the same shoresh as the word “edyam,” which is what the crowns the yidden received were called. The Apter Rav concludes that the “adas” that Moshe Rabbeinu “gathered” at the beginning of this week’s parsha were the crowns of the b’nei Yisroel. The second posuk of this week’s parsha is, “Sheishes yamim ta’aseh... – Six days you may do your work, but the seventh day shall be holy...” (Shemos 35:2) Immediately after gathering the crowns from the b’nei Yisrael, Moshe began to teach them about Shabbos. The Gemara (Shabbos 118a) says that if a person keeps Shabbos correctly, he can be forgiven even for avodah zara. Moshe was providing Klal Yisroel with a tikkun for what they had done, and in fact, the Arizal writes that on Shabbos our crowns are returned to us. Keeping Shabbos properly is the means through which we are zocheh to the crowns of naaseh and nishma. We have the opportunity to be somewhat free of the cheit ha’egel, and our relationship with Hashem can be largely restored. We keep Shabbos because

Keeping Shabbos properly is the means through which we are zocheh to the crowns of naaseh and nishma. in the above story who landed in prison and could only visit with his father once a week without walls in between, and without the need of an emissary. The story is, of course, a moshul. The walls are the walls of the Mishkan, for after the cheit, the Shechina would only come within the confines of the Mishkan. The emissary is the kohen, for after the cheit we required an intermediary with Hashem. But one glorious day each week, we have the opportunity for a visit with our Father. And, like that young man, if we are to involve ourselves in any of the lamed-tes melachos involved in erecting the Mishkan that separated us from the Shechina, we are like the son who finally sees his father face-to-face, but pulls out pen and paper. On Shabbos, let us not pain our Father by involving ourselves in the melachos that were used to build those walls, but lay them aside and relish the opportunity to draw close to Him, face to face.

May I check the mail on Shabbos? Furthermore, may I remove any mail which isn’t muktzah or doesn’t require tearing?

A

1) All mail that comes on Shabbos m’chutz hat’chum is muktzah. If one doesn’t know which mail came m’chutz hat’chum, it should be considered as muktzah. 2) All business-related mail (bills, statements, etc.) is muktzah even if it came metoch hatchum. 3) According the the Mishna Berurah, opening a sealed envelope on Shabbos is assur d’Oraisa, and therefore some are of the opinion that this renders a sealed envelope muktzah. Accordingly most mail in one’s mailbox (with the exception of unsealed invitations or those that have flaps etc., and which arrived locally) should be considered muktzah and should not be touched. 4) Peeking into the mailbox to check the mail is like ovdai d’chol. Therefore one should not check the mail on shabbos. If one is anxiously expecting a very important piece of mail and will not have menuchas Shabbos until he knows if it came, then it is muttar to peek into the mailbox and check, without touching anything. However, one should preferably forget about all weekday issues and have menucha on Shabbos without needing to do this.

we are commanded to do so in the Torah, but we are permitted to seek understanding. Why are all of the melachos of Shabbos taken exactly from the building of the Mishkan? Perhaps because on Shabbos our relationship with Hashem is closest to what it had been before the cheit, when the Shechina was available to us everywhere and not only within the Mishkan. What’s up and coming at Bejeweled.

Stepping through BeJeweled’s door of frosted glass is stepping into a world of sophistication, chic elegance, and impeccable style. As Mr. and Mrs. Nussenzweig, BeJeweled’s proprietors, lead me across a tiled floor of expansive white to the VIP section, I note how the selection of cream-colored stools, high ceilings, and strategic lighting create an airy, spacious ambiance. The heartbeat of this classy establishment, though, is not so much the décor as it is the personal attention awarded to each customer. “Who qualifies for the VIP section?” I ask, settling into one of the comfy, white chairs encircling a table of similar color, all tucked away in a quiet corner of the store. “Everyone!” Chesky, The Nussenzweigs’ son and designer at BeJeweled says. “At BeJeweled, all of our customers are VIPs.” Whether you’re in with a bridal party, customizing jewelry for an updated look, gifting a Special Someone with an exclusive Yom Tov gift, or simply browsing the children’s line, BeJeweled customers are waited upon with patience, good cheer, understanding, and warmth. BeJeweled’s staff also make themselves available after hours for customers who want to keep their purchase discreet and don’t feel comfortable in a public setting. After close to two decades in the jewelry industry, The Nussenzweigs bring generations of expertise to the Monsey community. It is for good reason that BeJeweled has become a household name.

duo steps into the store and are immediately greeted with friendly smiles. They are “just looking around, because there may be an engagement soon.” A dazzling selection of exquisite bracelets, intricately shaped bangles, and chic cuffs appear on the display counter. I don’t know how the pair will ever decide, with such a magnificent selection in front of them. “There’s always something new,” Faigy Nussenzweig says. “Customers who were here last week will find new things in the store this week.” She pulls out a tray shimmering with white, yellow, and rose gold. Delicate earrings, sophisticated necklaces, and designer bangles, all tinged with color, announce the coming of spring at BeJeweled. “Highend colored jewelry is very much in demand,” Faigy explains. She returns the tray to its place amongst trays upon trays featuring additional exciting colors, including an amazing selections of cufflinks. Luckily for us, we don’t have to wait for flowers to bud before enjoying the colors of spring. To mark their recent move, BeJeweled will be hosting a three-day “Don’tMiss-It!” event on March 6th, 7th, and 8th with extended evening hours until 9:00 pm! “Every single item in the store – our new line included – will be on sale,” Mr. Nussenzweig says. “Absolutely nothing withheld!” It’s going to be a lot more than just a sale, however; it’s going to be a BeJeweled Event! An elegant food court alongside a magnificent jewelry display - and many more in-store surprises - will be presented at this event. Visitors will be invited to enter a free raffle just for stopping by, and each evening of the three-day event will

At BeJeweled, a kallah is made to feel like the princess she truly is. see a lucky winner of either a brand-name watch or a one-of-a-kind necklace! It’s not just the holders of the drawn tickets who are winners, though. Simply stopping by and getting to know BeJeweled is being a winner! With BeJeweled’s move to a bigger and better location in the Town Square Mall, they can now provide their customers with additional selection, convenience, service, and quality — yet remain sensitive to their customers’ budget. BeJeweled has spectacular pieces at every price range. At BeJeweled, a kallah is made to feel like the princess she truly is. Faigy’s smile and friendly demeanor — combined with her expert advice and gentle reassurance — is exactly what kallahs need, when faced with an endless array of dazzling diamonds. Similarly, Mr. Nussenzweig is sought out by Monsey old-timers, who won’t settle for anything less than his trademark warmth and humor to accompany their jewelry purchase. For those who need a selection even larger than the store’s dimensions, the sky’s the limit. Though the Nussenzweigs shop the world for the latest in jewelry, their Italian contacts supply them with exclusive designs, so they can help customers create their own pieces. Chesky pulls out a photo of a necklace a customer wants designed. Studded with diamonds and interspersed with several oval-shaped inlays — each one a compilation of clustered diamonds — the necklace is a magnificent piece! Peering at one inlay, I notice how it’s comprised of several

cuts of diamonds. Opening a small cardboard box, Chesky reveals an oval-shaped, rubber mold. He shows me several shapes within the mold’s inner circle, each one representing a different diamond’s cut to be set in the necklace. Though the intricacies of the replication process are lengthy and involved, BeJeweled’s expertise and attention to detail ensure that each piece of jewelry is designed to perfection. An extremely economical and important upgrade BeJeweled can provide you is an inexpensive jewelry cleaning. Within a day, they strip away years of accumulated dirt, restoring luster where it belongs.

Next, we walk over to the watch display. BeJeweled recently expanded their line to carry the latest in high end watches. With an impressive selection of brandname watches such as Ebel, Movado, Longines, and Raymond Weil; chassanim, kallahs, and others can be sure to find a suitable fit at BeJeweled. From the display of various golds, stainless steel, and leather watches, Chesky chooses a black Ebel with silver inlay, demonstrating how the watch’s automatic feature turns on when in motion. “Watches can be tricky,” Mr. Nussenzweig says. “Refurbished and fraudulently labeled watches can carry the high-end label, yet mean nothing. We recently became the only authorized dealers in Rockland County and guarantee authenticity on these brand names, as well as high-end service, including overnight shipping.”

At the end of my tour, I can easily see why I felt sophistication, chic elegance, and impeccable style the moment I stepped through BeJeweled’s door. Stop by at the BeJeweled Event - and you, too, will instantly feel the magic! T H E M O N SE Y V I E W /

Recap: Her two next-door neighbors hold a yard sale, and Sara, who is outside trying to be helpful, sees Kasten driving by. At the end of the day, she parts warmly from Denise, and finds she doesn’t mind welcoming the new stage in her life, as long as she’s secure in the comfort of her own home.

That evening, after the two neighboring houses breathed their last, Sara sipped a tea on her couch. The housework was done, soups for the coming week frozen, her laundry folded and put away. Elimelech was still downstairs, preparing a shiur for tomorrow’s class. There was a calm that permeated her and mellowed her smile. Her neighbors’ houses were empty. Much as she’d never admitted it to herself, it had pinched her in many places when she couldn’t afford a house next door to other Jewish families. She hadn’t given in to the demands and subtle control of the developers. She was still here, her home was her home, and today, the lamp that stood on a tall rod next to the couch held an especially cozy gleam. This was hers. Elimelech trekked up the stairs. She could hear his slippers slapping his soles with each step. He came into the dining room and sat down. “So, they both sold out,” he said. “I know. Mrs. Callen. Gone. They,” she pointed with her head toward her kitchen, “are moving in two weeks from today.” And we’re still here. “I wish we’d also done it,” Elimelech said. “Maybe we still could.” Sara felt her fighting spirit return. She had to relax again, by taking deep breaths and ignoring the subject. “It’s going to be quiet now, for a while,” Sara said. “I can feel the difference already.” “It’s only going to get worse from here. Construction. Dirt, noise, and people that I’ll feel very unsafe having right next door. Oh, and smells.” “This is our house,” Sara said, resigned. “Sometimes, we just have to live with it.” “A hundred percent,” Elimelech agreed. They sat in silence for a while, each of them imagining a future they couldn’t yet know. “And I’m sorry for bringing up the selling again. I know it makes you uncomfortable. It’s just that… today was the last chance we had to still sell. Kasten—” Sara’s head flew in Elimelech’s direction as she looked at him, alarmed. “But I understand you. I do,” he quick-

ly assured her. “You want to stay. We don’t have really good options elsewhere. I just thought, the construction. The dirt, the change. We might as well. Because of the extra money we’d earn,” he explained. “But you’re right, maybe it wouldn’t even make us earn anything. Real estate is going up. I’m sorry for even bringing it up.” “It’s okay,” Sara said. Nonetheless, she needed to steady herself. Open communication, sure; talking about moving, about Kasten, about doing again what they had done then, about the carpet being pulled from under their feet every time they finally settled. This house was paid in full, and yet Kasten had still managed to pull it out from under them. It felt like too much. “Thanks,” she said. “Thanks for understanding. This is hard for me.” So, Kasten had been here today. When she was out in the yard, talking to Denise, he had noticed, and gone to convince Elimelech behind her back. How low of him. How single-mindedly focused the yungerman was. She had never known she knew how to hate, but Kasten — he drew out

For the next few weeks, Sara waited for the first hoe to drop, but no tractor came, and even Kasten was nowhere to be found. She did see him in Evergreen once — she usually preferred the smaller groceries, but she’d been in Amazing Savings to stock up on paper goods for when her sister made sheva brachos — and there he was, on the express line, a small tower of takeout containers, enough for one, in his hands. Poor thing, she’d thought. He’d looked at her with equal sympathy. Poor woman. But at home, all was quiet, and her workload went well, and she finally had time to really ask questions of the Rosh Yeshiva — when she finally got through to him. He said that Chaim Elazar was a shining star, really a rising star, and she asked why he looked like an esrog that had shriveled into itself until it became rock hard, and the only way to extract its aroma was to rub it against another hard esrog. “All boys forget to eat,” the Rosh Yeshivah said. And Sara turned this over in her mind a few

many levels that Sara didn’t even bother explaining. She decided to surprise Chaim Elazar with a day in Bear Mountain State Park, just the two of them, talking, hiking, being close to nature. She bought a picnic lunch at Eli’s Bagels, put it into their summer trip cooler, went to fill up on gas, put the address into her GPS, and obtained clearance from the Rosh Yeshivah. That morning, Kasten’s car drove up. And right behind it, a red sports car with darkened rear windows. Out of the car emerged three Spanish men. Sara had just loaded the car with her brunch and so she turned to Kasten, now outside and leaning on his car, and asked him in clipped tones what this was about. The Spanish men were conversing and backslapping and high-fiving as they came out of the Olano’s front door and headed over to Denise Callen’s old house. “They’ll be living here temporarily,” Kasten said smugly. “In both houses?” Sara raised her eyebrow. “Yes,” he said. “They and their families.” Kasten spoke with pride, with victory. As if he had pushed off building his development, just to give her a taste of living with neighbors she wouldn’t be able to handle. Perhaps he had. Perhaps he’d invited temporary tenants just to make her miserable, so she’d capitulate. It was good that the sideview mir-

Perhaps he’d invited temporary tenants just to make her miserable, so she’d capitulate. In the end, Sara realized that nobody knows a child like his mother, and if she felt he needed help, he did. Elimelech agreed with her fully, and suggested that perhaps a therapist would be in order. Sara was surprised. It had never been his type. But life makes you into a person you’d never thought you’d be, and their strides with Tehilla was probably what prompted that suggestion. Sara’s mother said “nach,” to the idea of taking a shtark young boy for therapy; it was a total disgrace and not warranted if there were no real problems. “Every child goes through stages,” she said sagely. She suggested a trip to Switzerland instead. Which was impractical on so

ror stretched itself out to her because she grabbed onto it to steady herself. He couldn’t get started on construction, because she was still here, was that it? He would never get her out of here. Never. But a houseful of new immigrants on either side? She knew what many similar houses looked like afterwards. You have learned how to live with all kinds, she told herself sternly, as she walked back into her house to stem the flare of rage that threatened to overwhelm her. “Perhaps the Callens and Olanos were only training ground for the real deal. You will do it. It’s going to be okay.” But she couldn’t stop herself from sinking onto the side of her bed, her despair as thick as the blankets under her. Chaim Elazar didn’t mind. He sat waiting on the front stoop of the yeshiva with his head buried in the pages of his pocket Gemara, until he realized his mother wasn’t coming. To be continued...

Success story of the week A grateful mom’s story: As our beautiful baby Chavy* matured into toddlerhood, we noticed red flags. She seemed smart, yet we were concerned… Her language development (she did not speak or respond appropriately to directions), physical development (she did not appear organized and sometimes very rigid and tight and other times seems floppy) social development- (she was sometimes so adorable and social, yet other times so inappropriate and would pull hair, pinch others, or just lay down flat on another child).. We were at a loss as of the best approach to reach our precious child locked in her challenges… how do we find a key? When Chavy entered the doors of Kinderland EI, a special education classroom of Hamaspik, we hoped for improvement… we pinned our hopes high, and baruch hashem she succeeded beyond our expectations! With a core team of devoted and experienced therapists, Chavy was given loads of love and understanding along with a comprehensive program prepared especially for her. The classroom teacher collaborated with me and all therapists on a regular basis to update everyone on the team using the latest approach and encompassing/updating goals. Chavy’s classroom routine revolved around activities she loved and craved; intertwined with skills she needed to develop. Language cards were initially used to give Chavy an understanding of the daily structure so she could make sense of the confusing world around her. As Chavy learned to follow basic routine we noticed she was much calmer and receptive to the familiar schedule. As soon as Chavy began talking we noticed that she is brilliant, way more than we realized. We continued working on Chavy’s weakness, systematically, and consistently and slowly skill by skill. As we continued working on her difficulties, we unwrapped the gift of our dear Chavy… A child who can walk, run, play, socialize and speak. A child who is continuing to shine and achieve her potential. What more can a mother ask for?

SUPER TUESDAY

Other than Iowa, Trump has won every single state so far and is looking more and more like the likely GOP nominee.

There are a whopping thirteen states at stake for the candidates on Tuesday, March 1st, also known as Super Tuesday. For the republicans, a lot of these states have thresholds ⧿ minimum percentages a candidate must reach in order to receive any delegates at all. In some of the states, such as Texas, Georgia, and Alabama, the threshold is at 20%. GOP DEBATE

What a debate it was.

On Thursday, February 25th, following Donald Trump’s third victory, the remaining republican candidates took part in a debate in Houston, Texas. And what a debate it was! Marco Rubio, who up to that point had been running a campaign based on positive messages, took the gloves off and attacked Donald Trump ⧿ inferring that he was an empty suit with no plans and no ideas, as well as a con man who failed in many of his business ventures and filed for bankruptcy many times over. He also brought up that he had hired foreign workers — in many cases illegal ones — to build Trump Towers. Both Rubio and Ted Cruz spent most of the debate

focusing heavily on Trump, but by the end of the night, it seemed like Rubio had achieved his objective, making it a two-man race. And he continued with the rhetoric while campaigning in many of the Super Tuesday states after the debate as well. It is a major departure from his positive campaigning, but presumably one his team decided was necessary to try and gain traction. This tactic seems to have rattled Trump who continuously referenced Rubio in his speeches in derogatory terms. He, of course, has the advantage of being the frontrunner and the man to beat, but he is not one to take an insult without a response.

Life’s Journey

By Chaya Liba Aarons

4 I call my mother with the news: “Nachman’s going to be on Ritalin.” Why, where, when, how? I answer all the questions with undisguised self-satisfaction. I was right, after all. I’m not a loser. I’m not a hopeless, inexperienced mom who can’t get her act together. It’s here on paper. I’ve got the evidence! I feel like displaying Dr. Walker’s letter to the Health Ministry about Nachman’s endangerment of himself and his surroundings to everyone I meet. I can’t wait to tell my sisters and sisters-in-law. At least I deserve the glee in telling them, “I told you so.” Aryeh gasps when, with the phone in my hand, I announce that I can finally prove myself right to Mindy, Chaya, Miri, and the others. They thought I was a complainer. They thought I was doing something grossly wrong. They thought I was a weakling. They thought I remained the same spoiled child they had once known. They are wrong, and I am right. “You are not telling anyone about this. You don’t publicize a mental disorder, even to family. Once they know, we’re not far off from getting the ‘problematic family’ stigma. Put the phone down, now.” Aryeh was never so strict about anything before. I place the phone on the table and breathe slowly. There goes the validation I was hoping for… But we want to keep up our good image. Yup, we also have shidduchim to make, one day. And for all of my smug superiority, even my mother isn’t thrilled with my decision. My mother is worried, peppering me with questions and doubts. Each time I falter again, but I remember fast enough that I am doing what I must do. I consulted with professionals and continue to do so.

But we want to keep up our good image. Yup, we also have shidduchim to make, one day. Then I know I should have never shared this information, even with my mother. Welcome to the world with skeletons, er, Ritalin, in the closet. Medication is kept in hiding, administered discreetly, and never mentioned in public. Because choosing to break out of that world is to enter the world of Judgment and Criticism. Whenever we meet Aryeh’s parents, the question is always: to tell or not to tell? Will they support or criticize us? Trust or question? We don’t want to take a chance. When we invite them for Shabbos one week, Nachman is at first a blessed little goodygoody. A little too good. It is at moments like these that for once, I don’t mind if Nachman would do just a little bit trouble, like every four-yearold his age. Aryeh’s parents are impressed as they watch him construct puzzles quietly near the Shabbos table. As I go into the kitchen to serve my luscious lemon sorbet, I suddenly hear a violent shuffle. Crash. Yelp! (That’s actually from me. Aryeh doesn’t yelp so fast). Nachman is zooming his fire truck around the table at violent speed and crashing into the wall, the table, and everyone’s feet. There’s almost no way to stop him. “Nachman! Come see what Mommy made for Shabbos!” Big mistake. Trying to distract him only causes more damage. Now he crashes into me with his fire engine, then jumps up and yanks at my hands, bringing down the porcelain saucer with a per-

fect serving of lemon dessert, which clatters to the floor. Mother-in-law walks into the kitchen to help, her eyes round. Nachman flashes her a sloppy smile and zips past her back to the dining room. I’d better say something. “Nachman’s tired. Friday night at this hour…” My mother-in-law sighs and offers to bring in the tray to the dining room while I clean up the sticky, dangerous mess. My father-in-law finds the scene amusing. “Nachman is an either/or child,” he declares. “Either he’s very quiet or he’s extremely wild.” Either he’s on Ritalin or off it. I can’t resist sharing a discreet wink with Aryeh. When Nachman’s up and ready for shul at 7 a.m., my father-in-law is bewildered. “He’s coming to shul with you? Isn’t it…” Strange? A four-year-old, going for Shacharis, Mincha, and Maariv? Aryeh tries to look unruffled. “Well, yeah, he wakes up early, and he’s good in shul, and it’s a big help…” So his mother can sleep on Shabbos morning. And so he doesn’t need to be medicated for a few hours. In shul, Nachman is a real tzaddik, without medication. The action keeps him going. He loves the flying talleisim, the stepping up and down the bimah for the aliyos. He happily stacks used foam cups and throws them out, returns siddurim to the bookcase after davening, and pumps every hand offered to him. But at home, this same un-

medicated boy might just need a shul full of men to control him. Nachman’s religious shulgoing saves me. It’s not only the triple hiatus that I gratefully use for sleeping and reading, activities that were formerly relegated to the stuff of dreamland. It pumps me with energy and fresh oxygen for the week, when I’m up and running at 5:30 a.m., trying furiously to feed a boy so I can give him his Ritalin, which will depress his appetite, and dealing with a natural, i.e., wild Nachman for a whole hour, while also trying to keep the house quiet so the others can sleep. But the rest of the world looks on and sees a mother who sends off her poor fouryear-old with her even poorer husband to suffer together in shul, while she trots back to bed with a wicked grin. “Um, you don’t think it’s hard for a four-year-old to be in shul for Shacharis?” my mother-in-law ventures as I set the Shabbos table. “Nah. Aryeh says he’s the best-behaved kid there. It’s a win-win — don’t worry.” And please don’t ask me about it, and don’t raise eyebrows, because I am beginning to doubt myself. Perhaps I am a selfish mother. Maybe I have my priorities all wrong. Maybe I should know better that shul is not a babysitting service and that little kids are meant to be with their mommies. Self-doubt is my wretched enemy. No! No! I am a good mother who is trying to manage and finding all possible ways to do so. Please believe me, too.

The Early Intervention Program (EIP) is a public program for children under the age of three who are either suspected of having or at risk for developmental delays or disabilities. Potentially eligible children must be referred to the county program (Rockland County, 845-364-2032) to receive EIP services. EIP is funded by New York State and county governments. All EIP services are provided at no cost to parents. Health insurance may be used for approved services. A child's eligibility for the program can be determined only by state-approved evaluators under contract, and all services must be authorized by the county.

Helping Children Accept People with Special Needs When my husband noticed a group of boys in shul teasing a teen with a physical disability, he took them to task. “Do you know Hashem created him this way?” They looked at him, wide eyed, as if the thought never occurred to them, and stopped. The incident got me thinking: How could I help my children grow up differently? How can we model true acceptance, not just tolerance, of people who have special needs? Can we teach our children to play with others who are different than them? As special needs children are more integrated in our community, we should help our children react and play with them appropriately. The truth is, we all have our own ingrained ideas, stereotypes, judgments and misconceptions about others. Many of us grew up in a time when special needs children were stigmatized. Even today, mental health problems are often perceived as shameful. As a starting point, we must figure out our own preconceived notions — and identify which ones to change. How do I approach people with special needs? Do I let the differences stop me from developing

76 / THE MO NS E Y V IE W

relationships or engaging them in conversation? How can I change that? A conversation is the step that bridges the gap between ourselves and others — often by dispelling or rendering ineffective an outdated stereotype or judgment. At my in-laws house, their adult neighbor with special needs knows he’s always welcome, and often drops in for coffee. I still remember my neighbor looking for her lost daughter with Down Syndrome, only to find her comfortably ensconced on a chair, reading a book in my house. Do your children see the same? Have you ever welcomed someone different in your home? Consider stretching out of your comfort zone, so your children can learn from you. Children are naturally curious, and are used to receiving attention for their cute comments and questions, sometimes though, asking questions that can make us uncomfortable. “Why does she look like that?” “Why does he speak funny?” “Look at his feet!” These comments can lead to embarrassing situations, but our job as parents is to choose the teachable moment, rather than escape the situ-

ation. Helping your child find something in common with the person can also ease the awkwardness. While we cannot answer every “Why?” — we can acknowledge it and comment. “I don’t know why she has a booboo on her face, but do you see her nice skirt? It’s the same color as yours!” It’s adorable to watch my one-year-old calming her big sister when she cries, and bringing her favorite comfort objects. Empathy is a quality we all want to cultivate in our children. It is a key step to raising children to be open-minded. When my twoyear-old pats and kisses any booboo she notices, I kvell. It is easier for our children to feel empathy for someone close to them, but how about empathy for strangers? One way to encourage this, is by engaging our children in various conversations about how others might be feeling in various situations. When someone is hurt, or bullied, or has a diagnosis or a disability — these are all opportunities to develop empathy in our children. Dolls, puppets and little mentchies can be used to effectively model empathy. My daughter’s friend asks her doll “Baby, why are you crying?” I often use books to point this out to children I work with. “Look, she crying, she’s so sad! Let’s pat her so she feels better.” I find that Chaim Walder’s book, “Stories Straight from

How can we model true acceptance, not just tolerance, of people who have special needs?

Avi’s Heart” works well for talking to children about emotions. “Children’s literature can be a powerful medium through which we can explore a ‘non-tragedy’ understanding of disability and move forward with embracing diversity and living life together,” says Dr. Cologon, professor at the Institute of Early Childhood in Australia. “Finding engaging stories with well-rounded characters that experience disability is therefore a great way of normalizing difference for children.” One series of books that I use is Rivka Schonfeld’s “My Friend, the Bully/Worrier/ Volcano.” They are great for explaining special needs to siblings, relatives, and friends as well as sensitizing even regular children. There are many other books that can be used to spark conversations about inclusion, various types of disabilities, or differences in general. It’s important for our children to see characters that look, talk, and act differently than themselves.

THINGS TO DISCUSS WITH YOUR CHILD:

be included. • Children can be born disabled or become disabled from an accident or illness. You can’t “catch” a disability from someone else. • Just because someone has a physical disability (when a part or parts of the body do not work well) does not mean they have a cognitive (or thinking) disability. • Children with disabilities can do many of the things your child does, but it might take them longer. They may need assistance or adaptive equipment to help them. Many of these tips are based on including individuals with special needs, but they apply to all differences. The important thing to remember is that underneath the skin color, the disability, the cultural differences etc. is a person who, based on that alone, is worthy of being included.

• Children with disabilities are like all children: they want friends, respect and to

TEN MOST COMMON PHOBIAS 1. 2. 3. 4.

Arachnophobia: The fear of spiders. Ophidiophobia: The fear of snakes. Acrophobia: The fear of heights. Agoraphobia: The fear of situations in which escape is difficult. This may include crowded areas or open spaces, sometimes to the point that the sufferer ceases to leave home. 5. Cynophobia:The fear of dogs. This very often is triggered by a happening, like a child being bitten by a canine. 6. Astraphobia:The fear of thunder and lightening. 7. Trypanophobia:The fear of injections. 8. Social Phobias: The fear of social situations. 9. Pteromerhanophobia: The fear of flying. I know someone with this phobia who actually escaped the plane before takeoff, allowing all her baggage to fly to the destination without her. 10. Mysophobia: The fear of germs or dirt.

ADAR PHOBIAS It’s Adar now. I hope no one suffers from these phobias, which can suck all the fun out of Purim! • Coulrophobia is the fear of clowns, found mainly in children. • Geliophobia: This phobia is no joke... Geliophobia is the fear of laughter. How sad. • Maskaphobia explains why many children are afraid of all those costumes. It is the fear of masks. • Globophobia is the fear of balloons popping. People with this phobia usually fear balloons in general.

I

recently had the opportunity to ride in a glass elevator up to the twenty-second floor of a building. This particular elevator is an attraction to visitors, and its riders delight in the beautiful scenery that unfolds before their eyes. What did I do on the ride up? I turned around (so that my back was to the glass windows), shut my eyes (so that I shouldn’t see the reflection either), and held my breath until the door opened to my destination. Confession: I am afraid of heights. I’ve never enjoyed ferris wheels, observatories, or looking down from the top floor of a mall. My feet start to tingle just at the thought of it, my breath catches in my throat, and I get a little woozy. Do I have Acrophobia — an excessive fear of heights?

“To be defined as a phobia, the fear must cause some level of impairment,” says one psychologist. Phobias are characterized by intense and irrational fears of an object or situation. They can cause people to constantly worry about encountering the object of their fear, and will seek to avoid it at any cost. Since I do ride elevators, hang laundry out on my third-floor porch, and have even once ridden on a stomachturning ride with an 80-foot drop — just because my niece was begging me to accompany her — I don’t think my fear of heights is preventing me from going about my life. So do I have Acrophobia? I think not.

By Shevy Hollander

FRIGHTENING FACTS • •

There are more than 400 distinguished phobias recognized by psychologists. There’s a reason why wives call their husbands home when a spider is seen invading the house: Arachnophobia (the fear of spiders) affects women four times more than men. (48% women and 12% men). Although there is a genetic component to phobias, for the most part, phobias are said to be “learned” and not inborn. When a toddler, for instance, watches his mother shriek and become hysterical as he excitedly brings her a spider dangling from his fingers, he learns to be afraid of spiders, too. The fear of injections is easily started by classmates and friends copying each other. A traumatic experience is very often a trigger as well. For months after the 9/11 attacks, countless people suffered from phobias about flying and high buildings.

INTERESTING PHOBIAS •

Being that I have a reputation of losing far too many things far too often, I am glad I don’t have Nomophobia, which is the constant fear of being without one’s mobile phone, or not having service. (It is short for no-mobile-phone phobia.) Researchers in the UK say that a whopping 50% of people suffer from it! Do you remember eating a spoonful of peanut butter in kindergarten for lunch and nearly gagging on it? I hope it didn’t cause you to develop Arachibutyrophobia, which is the fear of peanut butter sticking to the roof of the mouth. Many people claim that nobody really fears it, and it’s a made-up phobia. This is one phobia which should never be pronounced by someone who suffers from it: Hippopotomonstrosesquipedaliophobia. It is the fear of long words. Perhaps spelling tests are the trigger here. When FDR famously said, “The only thing you have to fear is fear itself,” he was encouraging people to have Phobophobia, which is the fear of being afraid. If you managed to get through the article until here, you are probably in the clear on this one. • Poor shviggers. They are probably the only ones who have a phobia named for them. Pentheraphobia is the phobia in which one’s mother-in-law is feared. • If you’re in the need of money, it’s best if you get to know someone with Chrometophobia, the fear of money, who will probably pass all of his money to you. • Ever heard the expression “Being afraid of one’s own shadow”? People with Catoptrophobia, the fear of mirrors, are afraid of their own reflection.

NEED A DAY OFF? Claim Ergophobia - which is the fear of work or the workplace environment. Psychologists believe that it is a result of various fears — like failing at tasks, anxiety over social events, and public speaking.

CLOSETS Hi everyone! Whichever way you call it, be it coat closet, front closet, hall closet, or entry closet — it serves one purpose: to hold and store all clutter from around the house. (Kidding. That is NOT the purpose). Because it is the closet closest to your front door, you do, however, tend to put in all the bags that will be “taken care of.” Now is PREP LIST: the time to really take care of it all! • Garbage bags • Gloves, shmattes Give yourselves two hours for the front closet. • All purpose cleaner • Broom, shovel, vacuum cleaner If you’re following along the past few weeks, you know what • Hangers, containers, hooks to do next as your first step!

1 3 4

Empty your closet. To avoid getting overwhelmed with all the stuff that’s out of the closet, put it all in a large clear container until it’s ready to be reorganized.

2

Vacuum all around, aiming for those spider webs that love to nest in the corners. Wipe your shelves, and remove dirt marks on the wall. Sweep the floor of your closet, and get down on all fours to wash the floor.

My favorite part of doing closets! Decisions, decisions, decisions. Before you put your stuff back, decide what to give away, throw out, or put in storage. As the weather gets warmer, winter gear can be put in storage. If you have the space and keep them in the closet all year, transfer the bins to the top shelf. However, this time of year is rather tricky. You still need all of the winter gear — so keep these things handy. Once you’ve decided what to put back and what to give away, you’re ready for the next and final step.

Organize. Okay, i’ll admit; it’s also my favorite part. Keep in mind that this closet was not made as a storage or utility closet, so whatever is not used on a daily or weekly basis does not belong in there. However, if you do have the extra shelving, you can store things on top shelves in colored bins (not clear).

Hang hooks for briefcases. • Obviously, there are hundreds of containers to choose from, and many ways to customize your closet for maximum space. G’luck!

You can put two nice bins on the floor and roll up extra towels inside for guests as a “grab-and-go” convenience station. HOW TO FOLD A SHEET: Spread the sheet out on a flat surface. Fold in half, wrong sides together and tuck in corners. Fold in half again , tuck the elastic corners in. Fold in thirds lengthwise and fold to desired size. Fold comforter cover on top evenly, same size. Pillow cases can be rolled up, or folded in a horizontal or vertical fashion on top of the linen set. I wish I could be in everyone’s’ homes to demonstrate, fold, and customize all of the solutions to your needs, — but alas, I’m just one person trying to put it down on paper.

Feel free to ask for personalized tips! sarastyle2020@gmail.com Once the closet is done, potpourri bags can be hung on the on the door handle. If you’re into ribbons and flowers, dab them with lavender oil, and you can display them nicely in the closet or attach pins onto the flowers and stick them into the linens. I personally don’t go for any of the extras. I spray my closets to give it that fresh scent. Right now, i’m obsessed with Unstopables Febreze Fresh Fabric Refresher. Blankets, throws and pillows: If you have extra shelves on top, then store it there. Otherwise they belong in storage.

Side Note: The time allotted for cleaning is not a given. So don’t get frustrated if it takes longer than the time I mention. Every room, every closet, and every person is different. The time is approximate. From experience, these are the usual times if you don’t dawdle. But remember, cleaning should be fun and not full of pressure!

de u t i t t a f o atter m a l l a s ’ It My granddaughter stopped in the other day wearing an outfit that was vaguely familiar to me. I complimented her and asked her if it was new. “New for me,” she answered proudly. “It was Esty’s. The ribbon ornament was a bit frayed, so Mommy bought me this flower instead. Doesn’t it match nicely?” With the change of seasons comes a pile of various colored bags, parked on the bed in my guest room. The rule is that the bags must be clearly labeled with the intended recipient’s name, and black bags are not allowed,

“New for me,” she answered proudly. “It was Esty’s.” because I do not have ruach hakodesh. Coats that do not have a specific “address” get hung in my closet, and my children know that they can bring their children to shop in Bubby’s closet. You could look at the concept of “hand-me-downs” in several different ways. You could think, “Ugh. Who wants someone else’s shmattes?” Or if you are on a tight budget, it could be a respectable means of dressing your children well, without having to borrow money. For Chany — who wants a pair of boots that are priced out of your spending range — her agreeing to wear her cousin’s coat from last year might mean putting those boots into the budget.

Here are some tips on how to make the hand-me-down exchange pleasant for everyone: 1. Make sure the clothing is clean; not torn or missing buttons. 2. Remove all name stickers from the previous owners. 3. Look at the item with a critical eye. If it would still fit, would your own child still wear it, or is it hopelessly out of style? This is especially important with pre-teens and teenagers. 4. Use your imagination. If the stores are full of outfits with chain belts, and you get a pretty outfit that fits your child well, replace the plastic belt for a new chain belt. Your daughter will be thrilled, and so will your wallet. Sometimes, a simple change of buttons will do the trick. 5. Never force a child to wear something she detests. Gentle persuasion is something else. I once convinced my daughter to leave a certain sweater in her drawer over a three-day Yom Tov “just in case.” She wore it reluctantly, but after she got many compliments, she changed her mind and it became her favorite top. 6. Make trying on and wearing hand-me-downs a positive experience, and show your children that you appreciate their cooperation. One daughter lets her children splurge on a hair accessory if they take a Shabbos robe or outfit from a cousin. 7. Unless your children are very close in age and size, don’t store pants or elastic-waisted skirts. With longer storage the elastic dries out, and when you’ll remove it many months from now, the clothing won’t be usable. Give those items to someone who can use them now. 8. Here’s a tried-and-true tip to use on stained garments, after all other cleaning attempts haven’t worked. I even once used it on a light blue Misook sweater that my daughter was going to throw into the garbage because she couldn’t get the stains out, and it was too dirty to wear. Before starting the washing machine, wet the garment thoroughly. Spray the stains with St. Moritz oven spray, saturating all stained areas. Allow it to sit for five minutes. Throw it into the washing machine on the cycle you usually use for such a garment. I had great results on polyester and mixed results on cotton. If the item still has stains, you’ve got yourself a new cleaning rag. A fringe benefit for me — the grandmother — is the nachas I get seeing my children helping one another. Of course, even after the handme-downs, they’ll still have a lot of shopping to do. There too, they excel in cooperation, letting one another know of the latest bargains. But let’s leave that topic for another article...

FUNNY PEOPLE It was one of those days that passed by in a blur of soap suds and mountains of multi-colored laundry. The only conversation I’d had that day was comprised of sentences that usually began with the word “no.” As in: “No, you can’t sit on the baby’s head!” “No, blue taffies are not a breakfast food,”

minutes from the time the little munchkins arrived home… You see, it’s not that I’m the world’s worst balabusta, it’s just that I have the world’s most kiddiest kids. That’s why I’m not ashamed to tell you about the state of my house in a public forum. It’s kind of like the day I called my husband home in the middle of a snowstorm and asked him to start shoveling the driveway. He gave me a funny look and told me that it’s still snowing. Well, exactly. And I live by the proverb that says “cleaning the house while the kids are still growing, is like shoveling the snow while it’s still snowing.” It’s not that I hate cleanliness; it’s just that I am not a masochist, and do not relish the pain that inevitably comes from seeing my hard work undone within several minutes — even though I know that I’ll receive schar for the effort invested. So needless to say, this day of utter spotlessness was a rare victory for yours truly. I’d done the external work of caring for house and home, and done the inner work of mentally preparing for all of it to come unraveled with the blessed arrival o f sweet little people

No, blue taffies are not a breakfast food. “No, we can’t call your friend at 6 am to see if you can go play at her house,” or my all-time favorite, “No, you can’t smear Vaseline all over the bathroom and pretend you are cleaning it!” By the time the lovely pintsized people I’d colorfully conversed with had been shipped off to their respected institutions of learning, even “no” had disappeared from my lexicon. The next several hours were spent in a flurry of homemaking that would make even my perfectionist husband proud. For the first time in ages, every piece of laundry was neatly packed away in the respective drawers, the sinks sparkled — surprisingly empty of dishes — and supper was safely tucked away in the refrigerator, waiting only for a quick reheat to appease the tummies that would arrive home with an audible growl. I took a quick look around and patted myself on the back for a job well done. The house was perfect, and would stay that way, hopefully, for at least three full

under three feet tall. Once everything was perfectly in place, I carefully locked up my to-be-envied house and headed out into the wider world — assuming that everyone else was sharing in my victory, feeling empowered by the accomplishment of the nearly impossible. And then I boarded the shuttle that would transport me and baby to the appointment scheduled for that day, and realized that just because I was floating upon a cloud, didn’t mean that everyone else felt the fluff. Now, shuttle buses aren’t renowned for ample legroom and a wide birth specially made to accommodate big wheeled strollers. Quite the opposite, in fact. Usually, I aim to grab the first seat, because directly in front of said seat actually is a nice-sized area perfect for housing my jogging stroller. (Not that I actually jog, but you know… the name shall remain regardless.) Today however, that place was occupied by a lady with a bassinet-endowed jogging stroller (even larger than a regular jogging stroller, in case you were wondering), her toddler, and another owner-less, light pink stroller of rather slim proportions. The next three minutes could be documented as the day I huffed and puffed and made a big fool out of myself by trying to bring my stroller on board while not losing my balance, as the shuttle bus went on its merry way, oblivious to the fact that I hadn’t yet managed to make it to a seat. I would have made it, however, if said pink stroller hadn’t been abandoned in the front, its wheels

Desperately trying to remain upright, I asked over my shoulder who the stroller belonged to, and if the owner could move it. Only on the third try however, somebody finally spoke up. “Your stroller is too big!” shouted a fluff-less voice from the back. “It doesn’t belong on here!” Gee, thanks, that’s just what I wanted to hear. Totally helpful, in fact. Instantly I was transported back to reality. The next thing I knew, an arm brushed past, brusquely ripping my stroller up and over the problematic pink carriage — thoroughly shaking my baby in the process, making her head bobble around like a dashboard puppy. In shock, I turned around and watched the furbedecked stroller-shlepper with

the diamond-encrusted fingers saunter to the closest seat and sink in, whip out her cellphone and begin to talk rather loudly — effectively sealing out all awareness of the outside world. As I stood in the aisle, seatless — unwilling to abandon my child in the middle of a bus — the well-dressed woman

suddenly tuned back into reality, looked up, and said, “Well, I guess I could give you this seat,” and promptly moved one row back to enable me to sit in the spot nearest my baby. Well, well, wasn’t that nice? I thought to myself, knowing that even in her annoyance with me, she had still done a chesed. It had been my first adult interaction of the day, and I was almost surprised at the childlikeness of it. Had I really had a spat over something as simple as walking space? As I left the bus and headed to my appointment, I marveled over the fact that, as Jews, we

feel comfortable enough to disagree with each other without even knowing the other’s name, and moments later, turn around and give to that same person with our whole hearts. “We Jews are funny people,” I affectionately decided, and rolled into the waiting room with a smile. After checking in, my suspicions of sweet “funniness” were further confirmed when a bright-eyed middleaged woman went from person to person and engaged them in conversation. Under my breath, I giggled as she addressed a young woman in Yiddish, while the woman just nodded in polite respect, although she probably wasn’t fluent in the language. I openly laughed when the chattery lady went over to a mother and prescribed an entire vitamin regime for her two children, and then told the older boy to ask the secretary for a tape-dispenser because she wanted to fix a page in a torn Tehillim while she was waiting. And then, it was my turn. I knew it was coming, but I didn’t want to invite it, so I tried not to make eye-contact... But what could I do? A neshama wanted attention! Politely smiling, I

nodded my way through the lady’s narrative about my baby’s pallor and need for a multivitamin, hearing how every time she babysat for her daughter’s child, she’d dump double the standard dose down the baby’s throat, because you know — There’s never too much of a good thing… Poor kid! I hope she doesn’t become overdosed on vitamins! I thought to myself as my own head bobbled up and down, lips twitching in silent laughter. My “friend” took this as a sign of bosom-buddy-ness, and asked me if she could see the doctor first. Without waiting for an answer, she ran to the secretary and informed her that I gave permission for her to go in before me. With a lopsided grin, the secretary told her that we were seeing two different doctors. “Oh.” The poor lady sighed, and in spite of myself, my heart sank just a little bit. Despite her quirks, she was so warm and friendly that I hated to see her disappointed. Later that night as I tucked my children into bed, I reflected on the spats they’d had just a short while before. They may have found flaws with each

other’s behavior, and may have fought like, well, brother and sister — but at the end of the day, they go to sleep in the same room, within one heartbeat of the other, basking in the warmth of family. And really, I ponder, aren’t we all the same? From myself, to the lady on the bus, to the self-made vitamin doctor — don’t we all have our quirks and quibbles? For little ones, it may be smearing Vaseline on the walls, and fighting over a marker; for the older ones: recommending vitamins to everyone they see, and becoming annoyed over inches of walking space — but at the end of the day, we’d all give up our seats or appointments just to make a sister happy. Yes, we Jews may be funny that way — but I’m quite proud to be a part of that funny crew. And so, I hope, are you.

MOMMY, I’M BORED! 98

Human Rubik’s Cube —

• cardboard box (see notes below) • black felt (see notes for size) (or white if you’d like a white-based cube) • 2 red and 2 orange felt sheets • 1 yellow, 1 green, and 1 blue felt sheet

Tools you will need: • • • • • •

Fabric glue or glue gun Good scissors for cutting felt Tape measure and ruler Pen/pencil Gillette (optional) Stick pins (optional)

NOTES ABOUT SUPPLIES:

Instructions specific for size 2-6 are in orange, and size 8-12 in blue.

Cardboard box: For size 2-6 use a 10” x 13” cardboard box (We used a case-size Beer Mayim Seltzer box. It’s only a few inches tall, not the height of a full box). For sizes 8-12 use a 11 ½ in x 15 (We used a small Rockland Kosher box that comes without flaps.) If you can’t find these boxes, use any box that’s closest to a square shape and adjust the measurements according to your box size.

Glue: The best fabric glue that we tried was Amazing Goop®. It dries quickly and the fabric remains flexible, although it does have harmful vapors and should be

NOTES:

Felt: For size 2-6 you will need 46”of black felt. For size 8-12 you will need 56” (or 2 yards) of black felt, three sheets each of red and orange, and two felt sheets each of yellow, green, and blue. NOTE: If you are using a different size box than the ones we mentioned, use a tape measure to measure around the entire box, and you will need felt that’s the total amount of inches on all four sides, plus 1-2” extra.

12

This costume uses a box only to hold its shape. The costume is done in a such a way, that it’s able to be removed from the box, so it’s easier to glue on the pieces, and so that you can wash it or put it away without the bulky box. (And if you get very hot on Purim, just remove the box and wear it without it!)

14

used in a well-ventilated area. Use a glue gun for the next best results. A third option is Beacon Fabri-tac glue, which worked well on felt.

Turn the whole body inside out. Now it’s the right side. Slide it over the box. Push in the box completely, pushing out all the corners.

15

Now we’re finally ready to cut out the squares! For size 2-6 cut the squares 3 ½ inches x 3 ½ inches. For size 8-12 cut the squares to be 4 1/4” x 4 1/4”. (Each felt sheet will fit 6 or 4 squares on a sheet. Try to cut very even squares for the neatest effect.)

13

Trace the shape of the arm holes onto the box and cut it out. (You can remove the box for easier cutting)

16

You will need 9 squares of red and orange, and 6 squares of blue, green, and yellow. You can use one color for each side, or mixed up colors for a jumbled-up cube. (The Rubik’s pros might want to do “windows,” but I leave it up to you!)

Lay out 9 squares on the front of costume, leaving a ½” between each square, starting about 2” from the top. Use stick pins to keep the squares in place.

Come in to view our display of this and other felt costumes! T H E M O N SE Y V I E W /

99

17

18

Remove the box from the body and lay the body flat for easy gluing. Glue the four corners of each square.

20

19

Repeat steps 16 and 17 for the back, making sure that all squares are properly aligned with the ones on the front of costume.

For the sides, lay out 6 squares in 2 columns of 3 squares each. (You can add later another 3 squares along your black sleeves to complete the look!)

21

When you get to the squares at the armhole, put glue around the armhole and press down the square. When the glue is dry, cut off the extra fabric.

22

Use six squares for the top. Cut away the extra felt from the 2 center squares over the neck opening, like you did by the armhole.

Your Rubik’s cube costume is ready for its Purim debut! You’ve worked hard! Wear it with pride! To top it off make a beret hat or a 6-slice kappel made of triangles of all 6 colors!

Real Estate

Creative Mortgages

by Ann Zeilingold When interest rates go down, what does it mean to the average homeowner and home seller? CoreLogic (a company that provides intelligence to identify and manage growth opportunities, improve business performance, and manage risk for the real estate, mortgage finance, and insurance in capital markets or the public sector) anticipates a national 5.2% home value increase for the next year. The percentage varies by state. When interest rates go down, homebuyers are able to afford more homes for the same cost. Example: Monthly Payment

Moses Einhorn, a licensed real estate agent at Keller Williams Realty in New City, says “The low interest rates that we are experiencing today has made it possible to sell more homes. Until just a few weeks ago, negotiations often came to a halt when a buyer couldn’t afford to go up to the asking price of a home, yet the seller wasn’t going down in price. Lower interest rates has bridged that gap, and deals are now being

Talk to a mortgage lender now and get preapproved. Be ready before you find a house.

made in those situations.” Logic and history tell us that house prices will creep up if interest rates stay low. Moses shares his perspective of the Rockland housing market: “I feel that private homes will continue to go up in price as there is more demand, and clients are willing to move farther than they had been willing to in the past. The lower interest rates will just fuel this growth.” What should a homebuyer do to be prepared to purchase a home and take advantage of the low interest rates? A. Talk to a mortgage lender now, and get pre-approved. Be ready before you find a house. B. Be in touch with your realtor and mortgage lender throughout the home search process to make sure that you are looking in the right price range, based on the fluctuations of interest rates and home prices. C. Work on all aspects of your mortgage plan relentlessly so that when you do find a home, you will be eligible for the best interest rates and thereby either

obtain the lowest payment possible, or have the opportunity to qualify for a little more expensive home, which may better suit your family. Home sellers must also carefully watch the interest rates. The seller may need a mortgage himself, and he will want to time his sale and purchase to be most advantageous. Even if a home seller is NOT getting a mortgage, the buyer’s capacity to borrow can change dramatically if interest rates move. In 2013, interest rates went up 1% in one week. Besides throwing the markets out of sync, borrowers who hadn’t locked in their interest rates found themselves in a difficult situation — under contract and facing higher than expected mortgage payments. Some buyers didn’t qualify for their mortgage loans anymore and had to

be denied. Borrowers who had been looking in one price range suddenly qualified for less — even $25,000 less! What is the solution? Interest rates are unpredictable. Now, none of the financial gurus are predicting a dramatic rise in interest rates anytime soon. You can, and should, lock in your interest rate once you sign contract to protect yourself against rates going up. If you are in the market for a home or are a home seller, just be aware and knowledgeable as you go through this chapter in your life...
