AWARENESS

ads@themonseyview.com

I would like to compliment you on your amazing magazine. I eagerly wait for Wednesday to see the next edition, and am disappointed if I have to wait for Thursday, or Friday, or later. I was greatly disturbed, though, when I saw a photo of the Viznitz-Skvere wedding chuppah, where in very clear view was the Viznitzer Rebbe shlit”a. I am sure that you were not aware of the Viznitzer Rebbe’s wishes to not take any photos of him, let alone to publish them, for otherwise you surely would have been sensitive to the Viznitzer Rebbe’s wishes and would have not published that photo. My feeling as a devoted member of Viznitzer, was of hurt, that a local Monsey publication printed a photo that bothered many chasidim, and most of all, defied the Rebbe’s wish. Also, I was upset to see that the Yiddish articles about the shuls in Monsey were discontinued. I, and especially my husband (who can’t read English), enjoyed them very much. Can you please publish other articles in Yiddish, so that the chasidishe men can also look forward to a good read in The Monsey View? Again, thank you for your hard work in putting out this amazing publication week in and week out...

Sincerely, E.G.

The last thing we would want to do is chas v’shalom defy the wishes of one of the leading tzaddikim in our midst. We respect the Viznitzer Rebbe shlit”a’s wishes, and are careful that photos of the Viznitzer Rebbe are not featured. It was truly a mistake on our part that this photo was inadvertently featured, and we will take every precaution to make sure it does not happen again in the future. Look out for our new and upcoming Yiddish section. There’s always something happening at The Monsey View!

AN EGGCELLENT SOLUTION

I love coconut, so the coconut cake recipe you featured was perfect for me, though it disturbs me to throw out nine egg yolks. Luckily, I found a recipe that uses eleven egg yolks, so now when we make the coconut cake, we make the following sunshine cake as well. 11 egg yolks 2 cups confectioners sugar 1 cup orange juice 1 tsp. vanilla sugar 2 cups flour 2 tsp baking powder 1/2 tsp salt Beat yolks until very light. Slowly add

BISCOTTI TIPS

I got many phone calls about the Fruit-Topped Biscotti featured in Issue #38. Some people said they were having a hard time smoothing the batter in the pans. The best way to do it is to use a wet spatula to smooth it, or wet your hands to smooth it out. The water will evaporate while baking and won’t affect the quality of the batter. As for the questions regarding how to get a clean cut, the best way to slice it is by using a Victorian Knox serrated knife. Don’t force the knife down, rather move it back and forth in a sawing motion for the cleanest cut. Thank you for all the feedback and rave reviews

IT’S NOT ALL OR NOTHING

Dear Esty, Thank you so much for your enlightening articles. (And yes, I bid my canola oil a hearty farewell.) A special thanks for this week’s article, “It’s Not All or Nothing.” I used to always be secondguessing myself. It felt like hypocrisy to bake healthy cookies and then pour junky chocolate chips into them to make them more appealing. Your article provided me with guidance and an answer. A Weigh Smarter Fan

DO YOU KNOW WHAT ENTERS YOUR KITCHEN?

Thank you for the yummy cupcake recipes, as well as for all the cute Purim ideas. Your columnists really are creative! Please make your readers aware of the following: My sister picked up a pretty cupcake holder in a heimishe supermarket from the Wilton brand. Upon arriving home, she noticed that it does not have an OU (or any other kashrus certification). She knew that it was probably okay since she purchased it in a heimishe store — and what could those innocent papers possibly contain? Just to be on the safe side, she called Wilton and was shocked by what she was told: “Oh, ma’am,

these cupcake liners are coated with non-kosher fat.” She contacted the management of the supermarket, but at a later time, still saw the item on the shelves. We’ve learned an important lesson; to always inspect everything that will come in contact with food for a hechsher, and not to assume that a heimishe store owner scrutinizes each product. May Hashem guard over us and may whatever enters our bodies be kosher. Please note that some cupcake liners from Wilton do have an OU certification. Many brands have both kosher and non-kosher products, so careful inspection is important. A concerned reader

A PERFECT OPPORTUNITY, MISUSED

I witnessed such a disturbing scene as I was checking out at Evergreen today, and it compelled me to write this letter to the community. There was a woman checking out in front of me. Her wagon was piled high with a full shopping order. As she was about to unload her wagon onto the conveyor belt, a sweet white-haired woman came up behind her with a solitary container of cream cheese, and politely asked if it would be okay for her to check out before her. It was a no-brainer that she would move aside, and allow this woman to pass before her. But instead she replied curtly. “No, I’m also in a rush.” I was in such shock and so embarrassed to witness this blatant chillul Hashem, that I still haven’t calmed down. It is so easy to make a kiddush Hashem. We don’t have to go to great lengths to do so. Sometimes it means simply giving up a minute or two of our time. And it is even easier for us to make a chillul Hashem. I really don’t know what that sweet, white-haired woman is supposed to think after such an episode. Let us be mindful of basic mentchlichkeit and EDITOR’S BULLETIN: of the responsibility we Last week’s sliced cake carry. recipes were created and styled by Miriam Paskes.

As told to: Basya Lev

It was a Sunday morning, and Suri was in the city at a subway station hoping to catch the E train. It was the only train that arrived at this station, and Suri knew that the trains did not run as often on a weekend as they did Monday through Friday. She had taken a book along with her in case she needed to wait for the train, but she hoped she wouldn’t have too long of a wait. Calmly she walked down the long hallway of the subway station and stopped by the area where she needed to pay. As she was about to go through the entrance gate, she heard the train arriving. She walked quickly towards the escalator and hurried down, as if it were stationary steps instead of a moving staircase. Just as Suri reached the platform, with about five steps separating her from the opening of the train, the door to the train closed. Suri blinked and before she could do anything else, the door suddenly opened up again. Suri jumped in and said, “Thank you, Hashem!” “You’re welcome,” replied a voice over the intercom.

Becoming

WeighSmarter overwhelmed with all this information, and I’m starting to feel guilty that my family and I are living on a lot of unhealthy foods. I’m willing to make a few changes, but where should I start?

A. By Esty Weiss

The Real Deal: A Cooking and Health Q&A Here are my responses to some questions that have come in over the past few weeks. Happy reading!

Q.

You wrote that canola oil is very unhealthy. I actually switched from soybean oil to canola oil, thinking that it was a healthier option. What oil do you recommend to use while cooking?

A.

I know, so many people use canola oil. First of all, it’s one of the cheapest oils around, and the fact that it’s flavorless attracts cooks all over the world. Now that you’re aware that canola is really bad for you, a good choice for baking, frying and cooking is organic palm oil. It’s a bit pricey, but it’s definitely worth it. If taste is not an issue, you can use organic coconut oil the same way you would palm oil. For raw salads, organic olive oil is a great choice.

Q.

I was never really into health. I’m used to going shopping and taking anything I need off the shelves without even glancing at the label. I’m very

The fact that most conventional grocery stores carry organic eggs, oil, sugar and certain flours reinforces that people are requesting them, and that people want these items to be easily accessible.

That’s a very common and fair question. The fact that you are willing to make certain changes shows that you are a very responsible person. A good place to start is in your own kitchen, because you have a lot of control there. I suggest you substitute the main ingredients you use throughout the day with healthier alternatives. For most people, that would mean reconsidering eggs, sugar, oil and flour. You can get organic eggs at any supermarket or health food store. And if you are dealing with a weight issue or diabetes, I highly recommend that you swap sugar for monk fruit sugar, stevia or xylitol (as long as you don’t have any digestive problems). If you don’t want to use a sugar substitute, you can use organic sugar, organic raw honey or organic agave syrup – anything, really, as long as it’s organic. Now, oil is best to replace with the options I listed in the first question. And if you want to continue using simple white flour,

you’d be better off replacing it with organic white flour. Organic whole-wheat and organic spelt flours are good choices too. For people who are sensitive to gluten or following a low-carb food plan, there are many options from which to choose, from organic almond flour, coconut flour, and flours made from different beans. Just take a look at the health food aisle, and you can choose whatever you feel suits your and your family’s needs! (Remember that for picky eaters, your best bet is to continue using organic white flour.) If you feel this is still too much of a change, then do one of the above items at a time. Just remember that eggs, oil, sugar and flour should definitely be your first goal, since almost everything you make in your kitchen calls for at least one of those food items.

Q.

When I speak to some of my friends, they don’t see why “organic” products make such a difference. Should I even bother with it?

A.

Organic and inorganic foods are incomparable! Inorganic foods are packed with every chemical imaginable,

while organic options don’t have any chemicals at all. The fact that most conventional grocery stores carry organic eggs, oil, sugar and certain flours reinforces that people are requesting them, and that people want these items to be easily accessible.

Q. If I don’t have any health

issues, do you still recommend that I switch over to organic foods as much as I possibly can?

A.

Yes, absolutely! Baruch Hashem, you are all doing well, but why not do what you can to improve your immune system? There are many things that you cannot change or do anything about, like pollution, for example. You can exert a great deal of control over what you put into your mouth, though, so the healthier the food, the better your body will be at fighting off antigens. There’s a reason why the expression, “You are what you eat,” is so popular.

A.

Since Purim is only one day of the year, I wouldn’t stress too much about it. For adults, I would suggest you pick a few goodies that you would like to eat. Taste a bite or two of each thing, and make sure to always consume sugary food with some form of protein, like fish, meat, chicken or eggs. This will help you manage your cravings. Remember that you are not a garbage can, and that it’s okay to throw away unhealthy food because it isn’t even considered food! With the kids, it’s a good idea is to tell them to collect their junk over Purim, and then trade it for money or another prize. I wouldn’t feel bad for them – they will end up eating plenty of nosh regardless. (The teacher’s and the rebbi’s stuff usually taste very special to them.) Read next week’s article on gluten sensitivity for more information on the subject.

Q. With Purim coming closer, it’s scary to think about all that sugary sweet nosh. What can I do?

Shabbos

Parshas Pekudei By Rebbetzin Malka Teitelbaum

Rabbi Feigenfeld spearheaded a fundraising campaign on behalf of a kallah in Eretz Yisroel who had lost her father. Through his efforts, she was able to get married in dignity and joy. One day, he overheard two of his congregants talking about him. One said, “Interesting how ever since Rabbi Feigenfeld started this fundraiser, he ‘suddenly’ had money to buy a new car.” The second congregant answered, “Tens of thousands of dollars must have come pouring in – way more than the kallah needed. Is it any wonder he suddenly has extra cash?” Rabbi Feigenfeld knew he had been honest with the money that came in, and he knew that Hashem for sure saw what was in his heart and in his pockets. “Let them talk,” he thought. “Who cares what they think of me? Hashem knows the truth, and so do I. Let them suspect me all they want, I don’t answer to them anyway.” It sounds like Rabbi Feigenfeld was being very noble by choosing not to address the congregants’ suspicions, but his reaction might not have been correct. Rabbi Feigenfeld is a fictitious character, but Moshe Rabbeinu faced a situation that was very similar, and very real. The Midrash (Shemos Rabba 51:6) de-

scribes how people suspected Moshe. One would say, “Look how fat the son of Amram’s neck is,” and another would respond, “He is in charge of the work of the Mishkan – is it any wonder he would be wealthy?” When Moshe heard this, he decided that when the Mishkan would be completed, he would give the people a full accounting. And thus begins this week’s par-

Torah leaders are Hashem’s representatives in this world. sha: “Eileh pekudei haMishkan... - These are the accountings of the Mishkan, the Mishkan of the Testimony, which were counted at Moshe’s command...” (Shemos 38:21) The Midrash Tanchuma (Pekudei 5) points out that Moshe chose to give an accounting to the people even though Hashem Himself had declared Moshe trustworthy. Moshe could have chosen to stay silent, contenting himself with the knowledge that he and Hashem both knew he had acted righteously. He

chose instead to humble himself by opening his books to the public. There are two keys to understanding Moshe’s choice. One key is realizing that in any community, there will be those who harbor suspicion against the leadership. It only takes a few unscrupulous people to spread unfounded and severely damaging rumors. When appropriate, addressing these suspicions early can put a stop to a potentially disastrous situation. Moshe’s humility enabled him to place the importance of holding the community together above his own feelings. The second key to understanding Moshe’s choice is understanding the nature of a leader’s role in Klal Yisrael. The Rambam in Yesodei HaTorah (Perek 5, Halacha 11) writes that a person who is in a position of Torah leadership is held to a higher standard. If such a person acts in a way that is not a transgression, but which could cast suspicion upon his character, it is considered a chillul Hashem, even though the same behavior for an average person would not be. The Rambam adds that the converse is true as well. If a talmid chacham is stringent with himself, pleasant with other people, honest in his business dealings, and does more

In fact, any person who dresses as a frume Yid is a role model to his neighbors, Jew and non-Jew alike. chance of hoping that those who look up to him will be dan l’chaf z’chus – not with Hashem’s name on the line. A person who is not a role model could choose to shrug off unfounded suspicions, throwing the burden of being dan l’chaf z’chus on the other person. But who among us is not a role model to someone else? A parent is a role model to his children. A rebbe or a teacher is a role model to his or her students. An older sibling is a role model to his or her younger siblings. And, in fact, any person who dresses as a frume yid is a role model to his neighbors, Jew and non-Jew alike. As Hashem’s representatives, may we all take great care to act in ways that are pure and that appear pure to others, and in so doing, bring a kiddush Hashem.

A SNOWY ENCOUNTER Tonight, there is a light snowstorm taking place. As I look out the window I have a childlike joy at everything the white covering portends. Adventure. Resolve to get through it. Sledding. Snowballs. But what I do is I stay in and think back to a time many years ago in my home city of Philadelphia when there was a blizzard... I’m in my early 20s. The first part of the day has all the fun stuff which leaves me gloriously soaked and appreciative of hot chocolate. The second part of the day – with the snow still falling – shows me that I’m growing up in a certain sense, as I’m willing to go beyond whimsy and bring some kind of comfort to a snowbound cousin. Equipped with a warm coat, gloves, and boots, I trudge off of my street of many friends to make the solitary trek to an address around a mile and a half away. There, my cousin sits alone in his warm house, waiting for some of the excitement of the day to come to him. Knowing that he won’t venture out into the unknown, I decide, unknown to him, to stop into a bakery, which I am delighted is open despite the meager street traffic. I order a half dozen danishes, and before the pastries are placed in the bag, I am already imagining the look on his face when he will see that he has been thought of, and that thought has been acted on, despite the elements. I am aware of how easy it is to make people happy. Outside of the bakery, I am a lone figure waiting for a bus. Mercifully, I only have to wait 15 minutes. When the bus driver pulls up and opens the door, he has certainly made me happy. But there’s only so far he can take me, and I know that the last half mile I will be on my own. Out of the cocoon of the bus, I experience greater difficulty in lifting my feet up and down. There’s poor shoveling in this part of town, and the snow is getting deeper. With four blocks to go, I start to feel cold for the first time on this day. I conjure up warmth at the thought of me walking into my cous-

60

/ T HE MONS E Y V IE W

in’s house and bringing him a sweet treat that was the antithesis of the weather he so dislikes. I am aware of how easy it is to make people happy. Three blocks to go, and I am even colder. But resolve to get through it kicks in, and I march on seemingly at a faster pace than when I started. Two blocks to go, and the nipping cold

Through the flakes, I can see that there is a red-faced man in the driver’s seat wearing a forlorn expression. It occurs to me that he might need help. I feel makes the effort even sweeter, as I know it is only a matter of five minutes or so, when I will no longer be making that ever stronger effort to lift my feet up and down. One block to go, and I can almost taste the danish which I know he’ll offer me after I give them to him. After I see that smile of appreciation on his face. After I begin to feel human again. I am aware of how easy it is to make people happy. I’m about to turn onto his block, and my energy level is at the highest yet. Then I am stopped in my tracks. There is a small pick-up truck stalled in the middle of the intersection. Through the flakes, I can see that there is a red-faced man in the driver’s seat wearing a forlorn expression. It occurs to me that he might need help. And I realize that I might be the person that could offer that help. But do I offer? Warmth is only moments away. I’m already doing something for somebody else. On the other hand, am I only here to help my relatives? Isn’t there a bigger world out there than the people I know? I walk tentatively to his pick-up truck. I am aware of how difficult it is to talk with a perfect stranger, but I know that it is important enough to overcome my fears, or at least ignore them. I motion to him that I want to say something. He rolls down his

window a crack. I see his eyes which are both suspicious and hopeful at the same time. “Do you need any help?” I ask. “No. Somebody called. They’re coming to tow me soon.” “Okay, take care,” I say, as I start to walk away. Then I notice it. The bag with the pastries in it. Were they only meant for my cousin? Isn’t he someone who might enjoy one also? I turn back to him, and before I let my shyness in connecting on a personal level with a stranger deflate me, I ask, “Would you like a danish.?” He has already closed his window so he doesn’t hear me. But he knows I am saying something, so he opens it again, and I am concerned that the look on his face is one of, “What do you want from me now?” “What did you say?” he asks. “Would you like a danish?” I stand frozen in place, wondering if I have overstepped my boundaries. His smile is the first part of his answer I receive, followed by, “That’s very kind of you.” I have taken a risk and the reward is enormous. He seems genuinely moved. He is no longer alone in the

cold. Somebody has offered him something. As I reach into the bag to pull out the danish, I am reminded again of how easy it is to make somebody happy. All you have to do is try. Get beyond yourself. He lowers his window more as I pass the danish through the swirling snow into his welcoming hand. I stand there, not wanting to gawk, but not wanting to miss his enjoyment of biting into this unexpected gift. He brings the danish up to his mouth and then, surprisingly to me, he puts it down. “You got any coffee?” he asks. “No.” “What good is a danish without coffee?” he replies, handing me back the pastry. We part. I am stunned. As I walk the remaining half block to my cousin, I feel vulnerable. What if he didn’t want the danish? I ring his bell. He comes to the door, wearing a thick wool sweater and a determination to

shut the door as quickly as possible, with me on the inside. “What’s in the bag?” he asks. “Danish. I bought it for you.” “Oh, you’re so thoughtful,” he says, and a smile of deep appreciation — and might I also say, happiness — comes to his face. It was then that I realize that it’s not so easy to make people

Recap: Kasten comes around behind Sara’s back, to push Elimelech to sell. The Rosh Yeshivah tells Sara that Chaim Elazar is doing well, but Sara wants to spend time with him, herself, to make sure. The neighbors move out, but just as Sara starts relishing the quiet, Spanish-speaking tenants are shown around.

They materialized from thin air. When Sara wasn’t looking, the new tenants had arrived. She wasn’t sure exactly when it happened, whether she’d been at work then or sleeping or taking care of the hullabaloo of children as they confronted their homework, but here they were. It wasn’t just those brothers or even their friends. It seemed like an entire South American village had arrived in the same van. How had so many people fit in there? There were at least eight men and women, a collection of children, a white furry dog and a large black dog, carriages, swing sets, a rocking horse, old carpets, a glazed-eyed kitten, and a vast collection of porch chairs. They all descended on the houses on either side of Sara’s. Could it be that Kasten’s entire plans had been waylaid because of Sara’s insistence on staying rooted in her own home? Was he now renting out these properties to the only willing paying tenants, because he wouldn’t be able to pursue his development idea? Could it be that the old maple tree that stood on her property but leaned its head into the backyard of her neighbors now stood in his way of razing everything to the ground, digging in, and building up something new, something fat, something profitable? To Sara’s left, the Olanos’ wraparound porch became the stage for two couches and men sitting on the stoop, cigarettes blazing all night. To the left, the windows that Denise Callen once cleaned every Tuesday night were strung with multi-colored bed sheets, and in place of her light fixtures, bare bulbs hung from a string. The door kept slamming to reveal yet another gel-haired teenager or young, ashen-faced child. But that wasn’t what undid Sara. It was the music that broke her down. Not two nights after the South American delegation set up their embassy to flank the Binet family on either side, they broke out the grill and had a party. The smell of roasting meats entered through closed windows and permeated

her kitchen, her bedrooms, even the tiles in the bathroom. Enraged, Sara went from room to room, making sure the windows were sealed. They were, and yet they still breathed in the spring and the outdoor temperature always seeped in. And now, it allowed the barbeque in. A barbeque in the winter? Granted, it had been a pleasant two days. Sara was the first to abhor the cold, which crept into her lungs and narrowed her fingers. But this week, she loathed it, because those new neighbors knew of no bedtimes and sat outside most of the night, pulling a small round table and a set of rickety chairs out to the front lawn with them. Now they were partying. At first, it was a volleyball game. Sara got ready for bed. She called her mother, asked about her mother’s day, found out that S&W had gone on sale with the winter coats, and that her mother had replaced all of her salts with Himalayan pink salts. While Sara spoke, even

The smell of roasting meats entered through closed windows and permeated her kitchen, her bedrooms, even the tiles in the bathroom. while she brushed her teeth in the depths of her washroom, she kept hearing the spikes, the shouts, and the congratulatory calls and camaraderie floating over the fence from the backyard next to her own. “I got these new neighbors,” she said between gritted teeth to her mother. “Spanish-speaking. Rowdy. And frankly, I’m scared.” “You live in Spring Valley,” her mother sighed. “To be honest, I never walk because I’m not comfortable walking through those streets. You wouldn’t consider moving?” Sara knew her mother, knew she wasn’t the walking type in the first place. Having gotten used to the Monsey streets, never built with pedestrians in mind, her mother was wedded to her car. She exercised in the pool and never walked anywhere simply because the walk was far. Nevertheless, tonight, Sara felt so far away from her mother and the comfort of those quiet acres she grew up on. When Sara went around to her children’s

kissed the mezuzah, and begged Hashem to give her the right words, the right attitude to protect them from all sorts of harm. It was getting so late. Even Sara’s yawns grew closer apart. She looked at her watch. Eleven. Even by law, the noise had to stop. But in the yard next door, the action was only starting. Music was turned up. Shana stirred. And when Sara rushed to the window, she heard the singing, the raucous laughter, such as she hoped her children would never hear. She rushed down the basement stairs and flung herself on the extra study chair, her voice edgy with tears. “I’m calling the police,” she told Elimelech. “Let’s have a tea,” Elimelech suggested. The both padded up the stairs and Elimelech lit the fire under the kettle. “What’s going on? I keep hearing these booms.” “It’s eleven thirty at night. And they’re singing. The music is blasting. It’s as if they own the street. I’m so thankful the little ones are sleeping. I don’t want our children to hear this.” Elimelech’s brows drew together as if with drawstrings, and he was quiet for a long time - like he always was when he was deep in thought. “It could be that Kasten wants us out of

Sara wanted to yank her daughter away from them with a choice word. But, she realized, adrenaline pumping through her neck veins, she was too riled for chinuch. “It’s late, Shana,” she said. “Should I read to you?” Shana agreed, and Sara sat down, keeping herself in check by slowing and deepening her breathing. She read her daughter the story of Mimi and Simi, an old classic, but one the children always liked, and which made her pine for the simplicity of the book’s illustrated neighborhood. Shana’s eyelids were growing heavy, and finally she relented and gave up. Sara tiptoed out of the room,

That should get Kasten in trouble.” “No such thing,” Elimelech said, and Sara knew he was right. “But it should stop soon. Let’s go to sleep. They can’t do this for much longer.” But when Sara saw the numbers on the alarm clock again, it was one-thirty, and they were still singing. Which is why, when a woman with a thick, black braid and an oversized sweatshirt knocked on her door the next morning, asking for work, Sara couldn’t help wondering, sarcastically, if she had missed the party. How was she up so early? “Cleaning lady?” the woman wanted to know. “No. Absolutely not.” Sara shook her head. She placed a call to Eli’s locksmith. She would finally fix that door, and she would do so with a double bolt. To be continued...

INTRIGUING REVOLUTIONARY CONCEPT By Eric Jacobs

All

men have gone through it, multiple times in their lives: Running to retail stores, trying on suit after suit, and then being forced to settle for one or two, even though they are not crazy over the it or style. That’s why I’m excited to share a revolutionary new concept I’ve stumbled across.

all that money on a brand-new suit that doesn’t it right, just doesn’t make any sense.

After crossing Fino Custom Clothiers spanking threshold on Hillside Blvd., get ready to have your mind challenged on all that you know regarding purchasing that perfect suit.

Eric: Seriously, custom-made suits are not anything new. What is so unique about Fino Custom Clothiers?

At irst glance, this “concept” appears to be a high-end, exclusive, menswear boutique. Yet irst glances can be deceiving. Be prepared to have all of your preconceived notions on purchasing suits chucked out the window.

A candid and frank conversation with the owner of Fino, Mr. Azer, will reveal a man burning with a passion for making each man look, and feel, like a million.

Eric: What triggered you to open Fino Custom Clothiers? Mr. A: Establishing Fino Custom Clothiers is the natural progression of our established tailor-shops in the New Jersey area. Eric: Why is that?

Mr. A: Many customers at our tailor-shops were a never-ending stream of men with suits that simply did not it properly from the get-go. Of course we did our best to help them out, but it was more like damage control. Eric: What do you mean by “damage control”?

Mr. A: Really, if the armholes are too large or too small, jacket too long or too short, shoulders too wide or too narrow, then even with the most complex tailoring, the best we could accomplish was altering and ixing a garment that was a poor-it to begin with. In 2016, spending

Eric: So one ine day your wife said: “Chicken’s for dinner” and you said: “That’s nice, I’m opening a custom-suit boutique tomorrow”? Mr. A: (laughs) Not quite. We expended much time, effort and resources on learning the latest, most-innovative manner of offering custom-made suits to the general public at affordable pricing. Mr. A: Low sticker-price with absolutely no compromising on quality. Until now, custom-made suits were only attainable for the wealthy. With our affordable pricing, a custom-made suit is within reach of the average consumer. This is actually a growing trend across many sectors: Lower prices + greater sales volume = Happy Consumers + Proitable Business. A win-win for all. Eric: Makes sense. But back to the actual suit purchasing experience, how does it work in real-time?

Mr. A: All prospective clients are invited to enter Fino’s state-of-the art, body-scanning booth. Within three seconds, multiple body-measurements and a 3-D body module are extracted. This allows our designers to customize the garment to each client’s unique measurements, build and posture. Then the fun really starts. Our stylists lead each client through choices of hundreds of materials and styles.

Eric: But let’s say I’m not sure what I want, even if I get advice from a guy with a PhD in fashion -then what?

Mr. A: No sweat. We maintain a substantial selection of completed suits to try-on, to give guys like you a clearer

idea of which style or material they’ll love. Every client is different. Some know exactly what they want and some are clueless. And we totally get that. Eric: What happens after body measurements are taken and Fino’s stylist has guided the client through the garment and it choices?

months, the standard way that men shop for suits is going to change. Radically change.

Mr. A: That’s all folks. The client is done and can go back to work, drink a coffee or take out the garbage. SeriRXVO\ WKH RUGHU LV ¿QDOized, and the client can expect to hear from us within three weeks. Client then returns for the KDQGV RQ ¿WWLQJ ZKHUH our professional tailors ensure that each suit is tapered to perfection. Eric: Three weeks? Not bad at all for a custom suit, although it does force one to be a bit organized in ordering should they need it for a speciic, upcoming occasion.

HURRY! Only 2 weeks left!

Mr. A: (Concedes) Yes, a bit of foresight is always recommended. Eric: And after that inal itting, that’s it?

Mr. A: That’s all. Client goes home with his Fino suit, thrilled. We make sure of that. We retain each client’s measurements on ile for any future purchases, so he does not even need to step into our shop if he’d like to reorder.

Eric: Thank you for your time Mr. A., you gave me much to think about. Mr. A: The pleasure is mine.

Well, I’m deinitely intrigued. I have a hunch that in the coming

Traditional Purim Seudah It’s that time of year again: PURIM! Along with the nosh and candy, we are obligated to eat a seudah on this chaotic, simcha’diga day. I’m happy to present to you four fantastic traditional recipes that I hope will grace your Purim seudah. These are all recipes that can be prepared in advance and only require reheating — which will hopefully leave you some quiet time to serenely dress the children, listen to the megillah and maybe, if you’re lucky, have even a few tranquil minutes to daven. Simchas Purim to all!

STUFFED CABBAGE

Most of the people I know end up taking stuffed cabbage from their mother, for as long as possible. But, if you ever decide that you’re brave enough to try making your own, this is the recipe to try (taken from my mother, of course).

4 large onions, diced ½ cup oil 3 eggs 1 lb. Carolina rice ¼ cup honey

2 lbs. ground meat Additional ½ cup oil Frozen cabbage leaves for stuffing (available at Rockland Kosher) 2 cups sour kraut

1 pack meat bones, optional 1 28-oz. can tomato sauce 1 28-oz. can tomato juice 2 cups sugar Salt and pepper

1. Preheat the oven to 350. 2. In a large pot, sauté diced onions in ½ cup oil. Meanwhile combine meat, raw rice, honey, eggs, salt and pepper, and additional ½ cup oil in a large bowl. When onions are a golden color combine them with the meat mixture. Mix well. 3. Thaw the cabbage leaves in the sink, because they leave a lot of water. When completely defrosted, set aside all the whole cabbage leaves that you can use to stuff with. All the leaves that are torn and can’t be used to stuff meat, cut up and place into the bottom of a deep 9x13 pan. 4. To the torn cabbage leaves in the 9x13, add 2 cups sourkraut, pack of meat bones, tomato sauce, tomato juice - and sugar, salt, and pepper to taste. Add another 2 or 3 cups of water. (The sauce should cover all the stuffed cabbage, so you might need a little more or less water.) 5. Then, starting with one cabbage leaf at a time, place about ½ cup of meat mixture into the center and fold in both sides. Then fold in the rest of the cabbage so the meat mixture is stuffed into the cabbage leaf. Place seam side down into tomato sauce mixture. 6. When done with all the meat and cabbage, cover extremely well with 2 layers of silver foil. Place this deep 9x13 pan onto a cookie sheet, in case it runs over and leaks. Bake for 3 hours. Check in the middle to make sure it’s not browning too quickly.

1 pickled tongue 1 onion, sliced Water ¼ cup vinegar ¼ cup oil 1 large onion, diced

2 boxes fresh mushrooms, cleaned and sliced 2 cups chicken soup 1 pack fresh checked dill 1 tablespoon cornstarch, dissolved in 2 tablespoons cold water

1. Place tongue into pot with sliced onion on the bottom. Cover it with water. Cook for about 2 ½ to 3 hours, depending on the size of the tongue. 2. A half hour before it is done, pour ¼ cup vinegar into the pot. (That helps the peel come off easily.) Remove from pot, discard the water and onions, and peel as soon as you can handle the heat. The hotter it is, the easier it’ll be to peel. Refrigerate until completely cold and slice thinly. Serve with the vegetable dill sauce. 3. To prepare the vegetable sauce: sauté the diced onion in oil until wilted. Add the fresh mushrooms and sauté until mushrooms have shrunk and are wilted. Add the fresh dill and the chicken soup. Mix well until mixture boils. Add the cornstarch mixture, and mix constantly until mixture thickens. If you desire a smoother texture, you can pulse one or two times with the immersion blender until you achieve desired consistency.

Pickled tongue is great for a Purim Seudah. It can be served warm, cold, or at room temperature. It can be served with a sauce or without a sauce. I have included instructions on how to cook a pickled tongue, and also an optional vegetable dill sauce to pour over it. With or without, it’s a winner!

1 tablespoon oil 1 small onion, chopped 1 clove garlic, chopped ½ green pepper, diced ½ pound ground beef 1/3 cup tomato sauce

1 tablespoon vinegar 1 teaspoon oregano 1 teaspoon salt 1 package round wonton skins Oil for frying

1. In a large frying pan, sauté onion, garlic and green pepper until translucent. Add the ground beef, tomato sauce, vinegar, oregano and salt. Cook until all liquid evaporates, about 20 minutes. 2. Fill each wonton wrapper with a heaping tablespoon of filling. Wet edges of wonton wrapper and seal closed with a fork. Deepfry in oil until wonton skin is browned.

This is an interesting twist on the standard krepel filling.

YOU!

Name________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Phone______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

SURVEY: WHAT’S YOUR PURIM LIKE? 1.

What time of day do you hear the Megillah?

I like to be up for the vasikin minyan, and hear the laining then. Pretty early; I have to get the day rolling! I’m still busy with/exhausted from last minute mishloach manos packaging until mid-morning, so it’s hard to get out until late. I have a relative that lains at home for the family later in the day. 2. What kind of mishloach manos do you prepare?

Very simple, using only store-bought items Simple homemade food items. I make an effort for something classy or themed, without breaking the bank. Elaborate presentations of homemade or expensive foods, usually themed. Something that will be enjoyed at the Purim seudah. 3. Who do you send mishloach manos to?

Usually only to family members Family, teachers, and rebbeim All of the above, with the addition of neighbors and select friends

Almost everyone I know!

4. How do you give matanos l’evyonim?

I make sure to give through the various organizations that will dispense to those in need. I welcome collectors into my home and give with an open hand. I make sure to carry a wad of small bills in my pocket for whenever I come across someone collecting. Indiscriminately. In my drunken state, I’ve been known to hand hundred dollar bills to small children! 5. What’s the Man of the House’s drinking style?

One quick lick, and then a nap to fulfill his obligation A few sips here and there Enough to get him tipsy On Purim, alcohol goes like water! 6. What does your schedule on Purim look like?

Basically relaxed, now that everyone comes to me! It’s an enjoyable, fast-paced, fun day of hopping around to all of our loved ones. I spend my entire Purim in the car, traveling the tri-state area, visiting nearly everyone we know. It’s a quiet day; I wish it had more action. 7. Ladies, what kind of davening do you do on Purim?

I wake up early and get in a full Shacharis, being unwilling to miss this golden opportunity I try to work in extra Tehillim into my day, along with at least a full Shacharis The day is very overwhelming, but I try to daven my own tefillos as I run from place to place, in addition to brachos I wish I would get to daven! 8. Who chooses the costumes that your family will wear on Purim?

Mother, according to her vision/budget They are custom ordered or sewn to match a theme. The children get to choose their costumes. After all, it’s their main Simchas Purim! 9. Can you share some tips for making Purim an enjoyable day for both parents and children?

Primary Elections By Ruchel Lebovits

SUPER TUESDAY, MARCH 1ST

There were eleven states awarding delegates and hundreds of delegates up for grabs. It was a night that could have sealed the nomination for some candidates, but in an election cycle that has continued to surprise us, it turned out very differently than many had predicted and some had hoped. For the republicans, front-runner Donald Trump won seven states. He was awarded a total of 247 delegates, which is a victory indeed, but not one that secured him the nomination. He lost some of the states he was expected to win, and some of his victories were narrow enough to award him only one delegate more than the runner up. It wasn’t quite the sweep he was predicted to have in the polls. The big winner of the night was Ted Cruz who unexpectedly won three states, most significantly his home state of Texas, which awarded him 102 delegates. He received a total of 214 delegates on that night. Marco Rubio won only Minnesota; his first win this election cycle. He received 94 delegates. John Kasich came close to winning Vermont and received the same amount of delegates as Donald Trump, who technically won the state. His delegates total that night was 19. On the democratic side, Hillary Clinton won seven states and 506 delegates, while Bernie Sanders won four states and 342 delegates. Here again, it wasn’t quite an outright victory for Clinton, with Sanders carrying a number of states and getting enough votes in others to receive a significant amount of delegates. And so the race continues…

It wasn’t quite the sweep he was predicted to have in the polls.

trying to save our nation.” So far he has not thrown his support behind any of the remaining candidates.

SATURDAY, MARCH 5TH The Republicans held four contests on March 5th. Three of them were closed caucuses. So far, in this election, Donald Trump has not done well in them, and that’s held true yet again. The elections took place in Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, and Maine. Ted Cruz won Kansas and Maine. Donald Trump won Kentucky and Louisiana. Delegates were allocated proportionally in all of these states — and because Trump’s wins were very narrow and Cruz’s more outright — Cruz came out ahead with sixteen delegates on that night. Rubio did terribly, coming in third in all three of the races, and then fourth in Kentucky, behind Kasich.

The Democrats held three contests: in Louisiana, Nebraska and Kansas. Bernie Sanders won both Nebraska and Kansas, and Hillary Clinton won Louisiana.

SUNDAY, MARCH 6TH Puerto Rico held its primary, and not surprisingly, Marco Rubio won. What can be considered great news for him and his campaign is that he won the state with a landslide victory, getting 71% of the vote. This not only awarded him the territory’s 23 delegates, since they have a ceiling of 50% which he exceeded, but also gave him hope for the state of Florida, his home state. Florida’s election is taking place on March 15th, and it is a winner-takeall state, with 99 delegates. It is a “Must Win” for Rubio, as so far he trails Trump in the polls. There are over a million Puerto Ricans living in Florida, as well as many Cubans who are expected to support Rubio, so a strong showing in Puerto Rico may be a good indicator of what’s to come in Florida. The Democrats held a caucus in Maine, and Bernie Sanders won. This rounded out a very good weekend for him where he took three out of the four democratic races.

Life’s Journey

94 / THE MO NS E Y V IE W

By Chaya Liba Aarons

5 Nachman is learning Alef-Bais! His first

day of cheder is a thrilling and humbling milestone. I am sending my child to learn Torah. I’m new at the cheder stage, and pretty much a beginner in the mommy occupation altogether. And one of the first decisions I make as a novice mother, is that we don’t tell Nachman’s rebbe anything as long as there’s no need. Nachman is a good boy in cheder, gentle and obedient (woo-hoo, Ritalin!). He also refuses to eat. Reb Yeshaya is bewildered when Nachman clamps his mouth shut when he tries to feed him bites of his peanut butter sandwich. I start feeding Nachman two breakfasts in the morning: one very early before medication, and one biteby-bite force-feed on the way to cheder. Then we have an appointment for Dr. Walker one day, smack in the middle of the morning. I have to bring him off medication. I survive the long morning before school (not without lots of bitter tears) without giving Nachman his Ritalin and then send him to cheder until the appointment. Reb Yeshaya calls Aryeh later that day. “You sent me a different child today. What happened?” “What was different?” Aryeh prods.

T H E M O N SE Y V I E W /

One of the first decisions I make as a novice mother is that we don’t tell Nachman’s rebbe anything as long as there’s no need. “He was so alive! He was much more active and happy, and finally spoke above a whisper. It was like a new Nachman walked into class.” Confession time. “Reb Yeshaya, there’s something I have to tell you. Nachman’s usually on Ritalin.” I’m pretty certain Nachman is this nursery teacher’s first charge taking Ritalin, and Reb Yeshaya is concerned. “Did you consult with someone?” Aryeh tries to reassure him that we know what we’re doing, and Reb Yeshaya accepts the information a little reluctantly. “Listen, Reb Aryeh. For now, send Nachman without medication. It was so much better today without it.” I adjust our medication schedule and give Nachman the short-effect Ritalin in the morning. But I am uneasy. I feel silly to be so preoccupied with my image, but I hate to be regarded as a negligent, selfish parent, and that is what Reb Yeshaya must think of me and Aryeh. That it’s working out well with Nachman in cheder meanwhile without Ritalin, doesn’t make me doubt our decision. It is to be expected: at home Nachman is his natural surroundings and not entertained every moment, while in cheder he is in a relatively new setting and entertained by his twenty-plus

classmates and a stimulating program. I am relieved when Aryeh comes up with the idea to write a letter. We sit at the dining room table and construct a long, two-page letter to Reb Yeshaya. We give him background information and describe his behavior at home. We are glad he is managing with him in cheder now, but he should be aware that these behaviors may arise at some point. The main motive behind the letter, however, is that Aryeh wants to compensate Reb Yeshaya handsomely. He sticks a generous bill into the envelope. We want Reb Yeshaya’s attention and cooperation, and also want to show our appreciation, in advance, for that extra attention. This is the way to do it. We know the letter has done its job well. R’ Yeshaya is attentive and replies to Aryeh’s calls with patience and sensitivity. We are a team and will work together for Nachman’s good. Cooperation is the key, we now know — and if we would start again, we would lay out all the cards at the beginning of the year. ADHD and Ritalin are tricky sides of one coin. They both have pluses and minuses, and the road is never straight. As I predicted, after several weeks of sending Nachman to cheder without medication, Reb Yeshaya holds up his hands in defeat. Nachman

is a real handful. Maybe we should put him onto Ritalin again? The seesaw keeps bouncing: after a while of sending him medicated, Reb Yeshaya wants the sprightly boy back. And then it gets too much. “It’s not about me,” Reb Yeshaya says. “It’s about Nachman. I feel bad for him; he’s totally out of control.” It’s time for Ritalin again. I take the changes in stride; this winding path isn’t easy, but I am confident that the destination will be well worth it. I believe that a child who is harder to raise can be just as successful in the future as any other child. Harder going doesn’t have to mean lesser results. This belief becomes my lifeline. When Nachman literally bounces off the walls, instead of gritting my teeth and yelling (in my head or with my mouth, depending on my forbearance), “What will be with this kid?” — I grab him in my arms, and hugging him (a tad too hard, maybe), think, “A weeded path can lead me to a bed of roses.” I daven a lot for Nachman. A wise woman once told me, “You never know if the challenging children who earn lots of your tefillos aren’t better off than the easier ones.” I am confident in Nachman, because I know Hashem loves prayer and a Jewish mother’s true concern for her child.

Help! My Child Won’t Eat! “Food sets the mood,” the adage goes, but what if it sets a bad mood? Mealtime should be enjoyable and even a learning experience, but add a child to the mix and it may be stressful. I’ve seen so many parents (okay, I’ll admit it — myself included!) trying to get their child to eat. How can you create fun and healthy food experiences? When at her last checkup, I learned that my daughter hadn’t gained any weight, I tried some of these tips.

OFFER A VARIETY OF FOOD From when your children are young, offer them from the food you eat. Even if it is just on her plate, she will get used to what’s offered. I never thought my children would eat quinoa, liver, and vegetables with such gusto, until I served it to them. Youngsters begin to taste what appeals to them when they are ready. A therapist I work with had children kiss or lick a new food, just as a tentative introduction. Continue to introduce and reinforce new foods over time. It may take as many as ten tries before your child is ready to taste a new food…and many more tastes before he likes it. Don’t force a child to eat. You be the role model — make sure your child sees you enjoying healthy food. (Hide the ice cream, chips, and chocolate!)

98 / THE MO NS E Y V IE W

HEALTHY SNACKING

Pre-measure your food into snack size bags in advance. Instead of letting your kids graze on junk food, prepare healthy snacks such as veggies and fruits in bags so children can grab and go. You can do the same with crackers, pretzels and other healthy choices, and then let your child pick. Try creating a shelf or drawer in the fridge with healthy options, such as yogurt, fruit, veggies, and cheese. Make sure your child can reach the shelf. Your child will be enthusiastic about picking his snack, and you’ll be happy to know it’s a healthy choice. Wellspring nutritionists often recommend smoothies for young children. Freeze some fruit in pieces and blend with milk and juice. It is both nutritious and delicious, and works as a meal or snack for reluctant eaters. The banana taste can hide almost anything, so be creative! My sister-inlaw throws in spinach leaves to the mix. I tend to blend in any fruit from the bin, and my children get excited with their “ice cream.” I also give frozen compote or frozen vegetables as “ices.”

DRESS YOUR TABLE A meal is so much fun when there is something different on the table. Have your child create place-

mats for the family by drawing or coloring a paper. Learn how to fold your napkins in different ways. Bring in some greenery from outside. Serve the food in platters or buffet style. Experiment with something new and watch your child enjoying the meal. A great time to incorporate this technique is for yomim tovim, minor or major. Not only will you encourage healthy eating, but you can create fabulous yom tov traditions. One friend told me she bought cute Chanukah paper plates and napkins for each night; her children were amazed. Even the new plastic tablecloth I put on for Tu B’shvat delighted my children.

PLAY WITH FOOD Try shaping the food into a scene or shape. Your child will be excited to try veggie happy faces. Be creative! Start with bread, pita, rice cake, or crackers. Add a spread, peanut butter, sliced cheese, cream cheese or jam. Top with tomato eyes, cucumber nose and pepper mouth. Serve for a nutritious meal. You can also use cookie cutters to create original shaped sandwiches. As an educator, I can’t resist pointing out that this is a great time to point out body parts. Try serving your meal in mini. Mini sandwiches, mini pancakes, mini potatoes or meatballs — everything is cuter when it’s smaller. Use tools such as mini muffin tins or mini scoops to create your miniatures. Scoops can be used to cre-

ate fruit salad out of melons and other fruits. Muffin tins are great for mashed potatoes, rice and other side dishes.

EAT SOMEWHERE NEW I can vividly remember our family’s summer picnics at the park. After running around, we were always happy to eat a good meal. Try eating outdoors for a new way to get your child to eat some healthy food. Grab some healthy snacks before you leave the house, so you aren’t tempted to buy junk food. My one-year-old is thrilled when she gets her own “snack bag” and eats from it on the go.

INVOLVE YOUR CHILDREN Everything changes when your child is involved in food preparation. All of a sudden, they need to taste the food. This is a great trick for picky eaters. But how can you encourage your young child to be involved while still staying safe? Allow your child to choose between different meal options. You can ask, “Should we have broccoli or squash for supper tonight?” She will feel empowered, and may actually eat what she chooses. I’ve seen children as young as two years old become so much more cooperative when they are allowed to choose. Toddlers can cut soft fruit with a plastic or butter knife for recipes, under proper supervision. My

Mini sandwiches, mini pancakes, mini potatoes or meatballs — everything is cuter when it’s smaller. girls love to “help” by pouring ingredients, open containers, break spaghetti, and peel bananas and tangerines. It’s a great time to work on fine motor skills. Involve them in punching dough, for great sensory fun! Give everyone a task when you go to the grocery store. Use a pictorial list for younger children so your children can help you pick the food. This way you are exposing them to different foods, textures and smells. Bonus: you’re actually encouraging language and literacy skills, too!

PLANT SOMETHING Younger children can dig holes or water plants, and older children can label plant markers. Try growing bean sprouts or cherry tomatoes in a planter on a porch if you’re a beginner or have limited space. Picking fresh food from the garden is thrilling and may entice children to eat the produce. The healthy nourishment you provide provides fertile ground for your child’s growth and development!

The last one is: “To quote a thing in the name of the one who had said it.” The Mishnah goes on to tell us that whoever does this — quotes something in the name of the one who said it — brings geulah to the world, for it says, “Esther told the king in the name of Mordechai.” With this quote, the Mishnah shows us a time that this 48th way of acquiring Torah had actually saved lives. When the king was threatened with assassination, Mordechai informed Esther of the nefarious plans, who then told the king about it “in the name of Mordechai.” This was one of the seeds of salvation that was planted, later sprouting when the king asked to read his chronicles and discovered that Mordechai hot not been rewarded for his loyalty. And the rest, of course, is history! We are all here today in the zechus of this one small thing: that Esther told the king of the assassination plot “in Mordechai’s name.” This is a segulah l’tovah, to remember to quote the source of our information every time we are giving advice. By extension, recalling from whence we learned something important can inspire us to extend a “thank you” to our benefactor. So, I will begin by thanking The Monsey View, who asked me to write an article that explains the

lunar and solar calendar and why the extra Adar is added in a leap year. I was entranced by this request, because ever since I was a little girl I was totally fascinated by the idea of being born on the “leap day” of February 29th. I just thought that was so interesting, so unusual, and so neat. And indeed, my elderly cousin has just celebrated her 20th birthday, because she was born on February 29th — although she actually just celebrated turning 80 years-old last week! Way back when I was so fascinated by the concept of a leap year, little did I know that I actually was born in a leap year, the Jewish leap year. I was the happy recipient of a birthday in Adar Sheni! My dream had come true when I was born! The need for an “extra” month of Adar is based on the simple fact that Pesach needs to be celebrated in the spring, at the same time of year that our original redemption from Mitzrayim occurred. The Jewish calendar is lunar, based on the cycle of the moon. This includes our monthly celebration of Rosh Chodesh — the new moon. The “extra” month of Adar that is added every few years, is the first one, called Adar Alef, Adar Rishon, or Adar I. Based on a

mishnah that states that Purim must be celebrated in Adar Sheni of a leap year (Megillah 1:4), it is in Adar Beis, Adar Sheni, or Adar II, that we celebrate Purim. In Adar Alef, we do have “Purim Katan” — though we don’t keep the mitzvos of reading the Megillah,

The Jewish calendar is determined very accurately, down to the exact minute, coordinating all three of these planetary phenomenon. giving mishloach manos, or matanos l’evyonim. We also don’t say Tachanun, Lamnatzeach, give hespedim or fast, and some eat a more festive meal. A feeling of festivity pervades for two full months of simchah! Two reasons are given for waiting until Adar Sheni to celebrate Purim. One reason is that our tradition teaches that Haman’s decree occurred during a leap year, and our redemption happened in Adar Sheni. The second reason is to celebrate two redemptions close to one another — our salvation on Purim and our liberation from Mitzrayim. Three planetary phenomenon

by Chava Dumas

So, in regards to when our seasonal holidays are supposed to occur, if twelve lunar months in every solar year are about eleven days shorter than a solar year, and a thirteen lunar months in a solar year are about nineteen days longer than a solar year, then Nisan would be eleven days earlier and earlier with every passing year, or nineteen days later and later each year — which would mess up our spring celebration of liberation from Mitzrayim that the Torah explicitly tells us occurred in the spring and is called Chag Ha’Aviv! And beyond Pesach, the Torah also tells us that the holiday of Sukkos must fall at the time of the year when we harvest our grain… i.e., the Chag Ha’Asif, which is in the autumn! So for all this, our calendar calculations must be exact… very exact, taking into account the differences between the lunar and solar calendars. According to Chazal in the Midrash Sod Ha-Ibbur, when Moshe was told about making the calculations of the months by the moon,

This exquisite exactness is beyond comprehension for those of the tribe who are less mathematically inclined. occur that are the foundation of our Jewish calendar: the 24-hour rotation of the earth, the approximately 30-day cycle of the moon around the earth, and the yearly cycle of the earth around the sun. The earth revolves around the sun in about 365 ¼ days (or what would be a little less than twelve and a half lunar months), and the moon revolves around the earth in about 29 ½ days. The civil calendar arbitrarily sets the length of months to be 28, 30, or 31 days, as the popular song learned in elementary school says, “30 days has September, April, June and November, all the rest have 31, except for February, with 28 and sometimes 29.” (No fun, it doesn’t even rhyme!) But the Jewish calendar is determined very accurately, down to the exact minute, coordinating all three of these planetary phenomenon. Our months are either 29 or 30 days, correlating to the 29 ½-day lunar cycle, and our years are either 12 or 13 months, in relation to the 12 (and almost a half month) solar cycle months. When we had a Sanhedrin in Eretz Yisroel, the start of the lunar month was determined when the first sliver of moon was observed to be visible in the sky. The word was quickly conveyed to the Sanhedrin, and when they heard the testimony of two separate, reliable eyewitnesses that the new moon had been sighted on a certain day, the Sanhedrin would announce it was a new month. Messengers were then sent throughout the Land, which was particularly vital to the accurate observance of our Jewish holidays.

the autumn. This exquisite exactness is beyond comprehension for those of the tribe who are less mathematically inclined. And with this in mind, I still have to include that the Talmud records in Rosh Hashanah 25a that Rabbi Gamliel told the Sanhedrin that the mesorah he received from his family is that the renewal of the moon takes place not before 29 days and 12 hours, plus 2/3 of an hour and 73 parts. An hour is divided into, parts, each minute has 18 parts to it. Two-thirds of an hour is 720 parts plus 73 parts, which equal 793 parts. So a new moon happens every 29 days, 12 hours, and 793 parts. According to this incredible tradition, every 29.530594 days, the moon is renewed! Only very recently in “modern” days did NASA discover, with their advanced computerized calculations, the time between our new moons… and their calculation is “off” from ours only slightly (29.530588)! * A year like this year, with two Adars, is called a Shanah Me’uberet. Anyone born in Adar during a regular non-leap year celebrates

Only very recently in “modern” days did NASA discover, with their advanced computerized calculations, the time between our new moons… and their calculation is “off” from ours only slightly! Hashem also explained to Moshe the precise rules for calculating the new moon. And these instructions were handed down in a meticulous mesora from generation to generation. So, being that our People have claimed geniuses in many subjects and mathematical whizzes ever since Hashem created us, the Sanhedrin inserted our special “extra Adar” into the calendar to ensure that Pesach would always occur in the spring and Sukkos always in

their birthday in the second Adar during a leap year. But someone who is born during either Adar in a Shanah Me’uberet will celebrate his birthday during the one Adar in a non-leap year, except for someone born on the 30th of Adar Rishon. With this auspicious birthday, they will celebrate their birthday on the first of Nisan in a non-leap year, because Adar in a non-leap year has only 29 days! In the fourth century Hillel the Nasi established a fixed calendar T H E M O N SE Y VI E W /

INSTALLATION SCRAPING REFINISHING based on all these mathematical and astronomical calculations. This is still our nineteen year cycle calendar that we use today, with an Adar Rishon added in the 3rd, 6th, 8th, 11th, 14th, 17th and 19th years of the cycle. So, as the recipient of a birthday in Adar Sheni, and as the grateful owner of more than fifty years of age, which Pirkei Avos say is the age to give eitzah — I am grateful to advise all of you reading this today, that getting older is GREAT! I mean, really, think of the alternative! It is good to publicly praise Hashem for granting us more time in olam ha’zeh. It is great to get older! No joke! We are not over the hill; we’re not even half way up! Yes, there are those who won’t admit their age... but I’m not one of them! Over fifty! I’m not embarrassed; I’m not gonna hide. I’m proud! I mean — I am so grateful! I said it and I’ll say it again: Thank You Hashem for every second! For every minute! For every hour! For every evening, morning and afternoon — Modim Anachnu Lach! The golden rule in Yiddishkeit is that we increase simchah — we don’t diminish it — so a year with two Adars is an especially joyous year. A freilichen Purim and an inspiring, awesome Pesach!

T h i s past Thursday night I spent some time in Rockland Kosher’s nosh aisle, in search of a treat that my Shabbos Tatty would proudly distribute to his classmates. The possibilities were endless. Marshmallow sticks that reached to his shoulders, sweets in imaginative shapes and colors far beyond what the rainbow has to offer — we just didn’t know what to choose. It seems the groceries today are stocked with any and every nosh that ever graced this planet, but no… Days gone by have seen flavors, shapes, and colors that we can only reminisce about. Every person I interviewed for this article was asked for her one favorite childhood nosh which was an integral part of growing up. Not a single interviewee left it at just one. As soon as they were transported to their childhood, the interviewees were on a roll, sharing with me how they ate each treat, who had bought it for

them, the taste, and what it reminds them of. This is nostalgia. This is what those childhood memories do to us, leaving imprints on our hearts and bringing smiles to our lips as we revisit that place where candy is something to savor, one lick at a time. Would any of these treats taste so good to our adult tongues? Probably not. But the magical sensation we developed for them during childhood remain. The first person I call is my mother, who always has rich and interesting memories to share from her colorful childhood. Her first recollection was that of a peanut-shaped candy, with a crunchy outside which resembled the texture of peanut shells, and softer inside with a delicious peanut filling. She then recalls the foil-wrapped chocolates they enjoyed when she was a child in Eretz Yisroel. The fondness isn’t so much over the chocolate as the wrappers. The wrappers protecting the chocolate confections were patterned gold or silver, with either red, blue, or green stars, crescents, polka dots and other designs. They’d lovingly place the wrappers into books to straighten them, and they’d save them, collect them, and trade them among friends. As things would have it, one of her most vivid memories are of what she was not able to have. “We knew that in the convenience shop we were allowed to buy Wise potato chips and crackerjacks, but not Bazooka gum. But the gum wrappers had

cartoons we wanted to collect; no problem, we’d just pick discarded wrappers off the streets and collect them!” From there I reach out to neighbors, relatives, and friends of different age brackets. I thought everyone will respond with “Chew Chews!” Some do, but I am surprised at the variety of nosh that is extinct. Even Chew Chews are remembered differently by various age groups. What everyone remembers is the teeth-pulling, cavity-clunking mouthful of delicious cherry goodness. The children growing up in the eighties and nineties remember them in stacks of five, and the children of the new century think of the red, green, and pink variety, lined up in rows of four as their childhood favorite. “Orange flavored drinks!” Leah F. laughs. “They came in cardboard boxes, like milk cartons, and we’d take them along on every trip. Now why didn’t we take water bottles?” There weren’t any, she remembers after some thought, and the teacher would line up all the girls at the water fountain prior to boarding the bus back home to make sure everyone got their fill. Later in the day, Leah and her friend reminisce how one of their classmates invented the first sports cap bottle, when she unveiled her drink while on a trip — a dishwashing soap bottle filled with water. “You’re drinking from a soap bottle?” her classmates had asked. “Sure,” she’d replied. “I wash everything with soap anyhow. This bottle is so clean!” And her classmates were duly impressed by the novelty as they watched her open and close her “sports bottle” cap. Fruity Chews, those silver wrapped fruit taffies is another thing Leah fondly recalls. They came in an assortment of strawberry, orange, and lemon flavors, a picture of the fruit adorning each silver wrapper. “I can still taste that lemon taffy,” she says. “It was so good, tangy and flavorful, and tickled my taste buds.” Sarah L. recalls the chocolate bells her parents

would b r i n g home every time they’d go out of town for the weekend. “As long as they brought us home bells, it didn’t matter to us if they were gone for a week!” The bells, famously sold by Frank’s bakery here in Monsey, had a brownie base, upon which stood a decorative blob of cocoa whip, and the entire structure was coated in chocolate. “There’s another thing I remember,” Sarah says. “It’s made a comeback recently, but nothing like the original.” She’s referring to taffy pops, which came in banana, chocolate, and strawberry flavors and was softer and chewier than the ones that are available today. Rivky I. also remembers one nostalgic treat ob-

tained at Frank’s bakery, Smash ice cream. Her description makes my mouth water. “They were $1 each at Frank’s, and they were strawberry or chocolate flavored, coated in pistachio. My grandmother would buy them by the dozen.” She also fondly remembers the original Glick’s chocolate balls, which later melded into the huge Klik’s variety. Rumpler’s Sweets Mitzvah candies seem to be another popular sweet many remember. They’d have a colored border, a white, chewy inside, and picture of a Sefer Torah or other Yiddish pictures in the center, all made of candy. A variation on this were “face candies,” where there were cute faces in the center. Jaw breakers! Fireballs! I still recall licking them, and alternately biting off delicate layers. These multi-layered treats were not only thrilling, but they also took a long time to be consumed, ensuring utmost enjoyment. The fireballs were hot, and we’d hold them between our fingers between licks. And one thing I’ll never forget is the jumbo jawbreaker that literally took a half a year to eat. I remember my friend getting one of those from her father, and each time I’d visit, she’d lovingly take the barely shrunken ball out of her drawer and enjoy a few licks. It made me so jealous. What I wouldn’t do to get my hands onto one! Faiga W. has an answer for me before my question is even out. “Light green super snacks, the narrow tubes,” she says. “I don’t remember what flavor they were, but I remember that they were so good. I wonder why they stopped it. There were also the taco-flavored tan bags, but those were around much longer.” One thing she can’t help but remember are the wax bottles whose tops were twisted off to dispense a syrupy liquid, something she gets queasy

Irresistible! Great for Dieters!

even thinking of. “And cherry lollies, are they still around?” I don’t know either. Have any of you, dear readers, sighted them recently on the grocery shelves? I catch Esty G. on her way out, but she can’t help but share a little bit in the minute and a half she can spare. The first things that come to mind are Peewees, four or five hard candy balls, which came in a narrow sleeve, and what she calls an “umbrella candy,” which was tricolor, each layer blending into the next, with a piece of wax at the end, at the handle, to inform the indulger that the treat was over. She also recalls Nougat Rolls and Super Stars, that to me seem to be similar chocolate rolls involving nuts, gooey chocolate, and nougat — but there must have been quite a difference to set them apart. “We used to buy them each Thursday night when we made our Shabbos order. It was our weekly treat,” she recalls. “Is there anyone else who misses the corn snack like I do?” asks Bassy. “I don’t remember the name. I think it was an Israeli company, but they were the most delicious crispy cone-shaped corn snack, with a texture similar to Chex.” “My two favorite chocolate bars are no longer available,” Malky says. “Choco Kid, the one with the white milk filling, and Crispy Bar, another delicious chocolate bar.” The calls keep coming all night of anyone who suddenly remembered more of their childhood favorites. Gum drops, of the Candyland variety, fruit-shaped marzipan, cigarette gums, which were such fun for Purim pretend and ended with a delicious treat. And the endless chocolate bars with catchy names that made great captions to use in congratulating graduates or greeting campers. The memories are endless! Now there’s a new generation of nostalgic candies in the making, so make sure that your kids try out all of the varieties that will come flooding in on Purim. You never know, maybe in 20 years, someone will ask them what their Nostalgia in the Nosh Aisle is...

LICORICE In another two weeks, you won’t be able to control the sweets pouring in and the excessive consumption of sugar. The only battle stance you could take is to be armed with these confectionary facts!

COTTON CANDY •

• • •

116

What we fondly know as “cotton candy” was originally called “fairy floss,” and is called “candyfloss” in the UK and India, “fairy floss” in Australia and Finland, “papa’s beard” (barbe à papa) in France, and “old ladies’ hair” in Greece. (Do you think the French and Greek have an appetite for those?) The irony! Dentists were the one who first introduced cotton candy to the world. Dr. William Morrison along with candy maker John C. Wharten introduced it at the 1904 St. Louis World’s Fair, where they sold 68,000 of them, for 25¢ apiece ($6.75 in today’s money). Another dentist, Dr. Josef Lascaux, improved the design in 1921 and trademarked the name “Cotton Candy.” Threads of cotton candy are thinner than a human hair. Spun sugar has been around since the 17th century, when chefs would whisk melted sugar into thin strands with a fork, and use them to decorate cakes and pastries. / T HE MO NS E Y V IE W

Is licorice really licorice? Unless you are referring to black licorice, which is flavored with licorice extract (no, thank you - I’ll have some red!), then no - there’s nothing “licorice” in confectionary red licorice. In fact, if you study a package of twists, twizzlers, twerps, cherry nibs, or anything of that delightfully delicious family, you will notice that the word licorice is absent from the packaging. The actual licorice flavor can be found in those sweets that will usually be the last of the pack to be consumed, like in black jelly beans, black licorice twists, chewing gums, licorice candies, and licorice tea... All of the above, whether twists, nibs, or actual licorice sticks are made by a similar process, which combines sugar with a starchy binder, usually flour. In determining the right bracha, flour, because of its importance as a dietary staple, is usually considered the main ingredient in any mixture, even if there is only a little bit of flour in it. However, in this case, since licorice is eaten mainly for the sugar content, and the flour acts mainly as a binder, the proper bracha is shehakol.

JELLY BEANS

Across the country, red jelly beans are most commonly chosen as the favorite flavor. • Jelly beans were the first candies to be sold by weight. (It wouldn’t really work for them to be handled by hand...) • Anyone living in the U.S. in the 1980s will remember President Ronald Reagan and his favorite candy, jelly beans! For his first inauguration, 7,000 pounds of jelly beans were distributed among guests, and Jelly Belly created a new flavor, Blueberry, for the event. Reagan was known to always have a jar of jelly beans on his desk, and he even kicked his smoking habit by eating those gooey confections. He explained why he likes to have them on hand for important meetings by saying, “You can tell a lot about a fella’s character by whether he picks out all of one color or just grabs a handful.” A portrait of President Ronald Reagan, made from 10,000 jelly beans, hangs in the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library in Simi Valley, California. Don’t let your nose fool you in selecting the yummiest treats! Smells, not tastes, are the first to be analyzed to create a certain flavor jelly bean.

FACTS THAT WILL STICK

TAFFY •

In the 19th century, eating taffy was only half the fun. In order for taffy to have that light and chewy consistency, it needs to be stretched and pulled, so that air will get into the mixture. Today, it is easily done by machine, but some people still enjoy having some fun making their own taffy mixture to pull. In the pre-Industrial Revolution Era, if you wanted taffy, you had to put some major muscle into it. People would gather together and have taffy pulling parties, a great way to entertain kids and guests with a treat at the end. Legend has it that Salt Water Taffy received its name by accident. A young candy merchant opened a taffy stand just two steps above sea level. One night, a generous tide brought in a lively surf, which sprayed sea foam over his establishment, dampening his stock of candy. The next morning, the merchant was dismayed to find his merchandise wet, and responded to a girl’s request for taffy with a sarcastic, but witty, “You mean Salt Water Taffy.” The name... stuck!

Candy is simply made by dissolving sugar in water. The different heating levels determine the types of candy: Hot temperatures make hard candy, medium heat will make soft candy, and lower temperatures make chewy candy. Think it’s your candy consumption that’s causing you to pile on the pounds? Less than two percent of the calories in the American diet are supplied by candy. In fact, some candies (such as lollipops, candy canes, gummy bears, gum drops, licorice twists, and sour balls) are free of fat and cholesterol, making them healthier than lots of other things we consume. (Now, don’t blame me for the guilt-free noshing…) Is candy a kids’ food? Surprisingly, 65% of the candy in the U.S. is consumed by adults over the age of 18! Rich meat, a lavish meal, and… candy. In Europe during the middle ages, the high cost of sugar made candy a delicacy available only to the wealthy. Most traditionally, flavored bubble gum is pink because that was the only color dye available when it was invented.

PLAYROOM Hi Everyone! One of my favorite rooms to organize is the playroom! Besides suddenly realizing again that the mini legos have a zillion pieces, it’s so much fun! The decisions you make in this room are generally easier than your bedrooms. The reason I’m being so generous with the allotted time this week, is simply because playrooms in most homes double as a homework room, utility room, crafts room and basically an overall room that hosts the bulk of the home storage, toys, and crafts. We will focus on the playroom/toy closet in this article. I love listening to children’s choirs when I do this room. The CD that’s playing in my home 24/6 (literally) at the moment is Junior Shalsheles 3. All ages love it. The adults too. Although watching me get excited over Playmobil begs the question of “Who qualifies as the adult?”

Playroom cleanup time can range from 2 hours to 20 hours! Refer to previous articles for other cleaning products. Questions? Sarastyle2020@gmail.com

PREP LIST:

Garbage bags Gloves Shmattes/dust cloths Broom, shovel, mop, duster, vacuum cleaner • Window cleaner • Mild cleanser/regular cleanser. For children’s Toys, I like using natural products. Try Green Works All Purpose Cleaner. • Scrubbing brush • Floor cleaner • Ziploc bags • Containers

LET’S START WITH THE CLOSET.

Although, my motto is: “Empty everything!” I will let it slide with the playroom. You can still do that if you prefer to, no worries. But this is a room where the kids come in, so if you empty all the toys and games, beware that they will decide to play with all of them at the same time. • Vacuum corners. Work your way from the top down. • GAMES: If you’re missing game pieces, call the company to send replacements. Not all the companies do. If you can’t get replacements, don’t put the box back into the closet! (Yeah, we all do that.) Tape any torn boxes. If the boxes are beyond repair, consider buying special game containers. You can also simplify it by using the Sterilite 3-drawer storage. Put the little play pieces in Ziploc bags. Label everything. I’m a huge fan of Ziplocs. All sizes. • PUZZLES: If the box needs to be discarded, cut out the cover picture of the puzzle and put the puzzle in a ziplock bag. • LEGO: Don’t attempt to wash it in the bathtub. The wash machine works the best with mild detergent. Air dry. • CLICS: I haven’t tried washing them in the machine yet, but if you do and it works, send us a line. I wash them with dish soap. A teaspoon of soap goes a long way. • TOY CARS: Wipe with mild cleanser

• DRESS UP: Wash in machine on gentle cycle • TRAIN TRACKS OR WOODEN BLOCKS: Wipe down with a damp cloth. Don’t soak them. • DOLLS: Wipe down with a damp cloth. Detangle hair with a metal comb. Wash clothing on gentle cycle. I’d love to go through every toy on the market, but unless you want The Monsey View to be really, really cumbersome to lug around, we’ll stick to the basic toys. • Any other hard plastic toy, just wipe down with a gentle cleanser. • Any soft toy can be usually washed in the machine on gentle cycle. • Throw away any broken toy. Give away any toy or game your family has outgrown or that hasn’t been used in a while. This part is good to do with your kids. • Wipe shelves before putting the toys and games back on. • Wipe closet walls. Scrub with soft scrub where chocolaty hands have been. (It could’ve easily been mine.) • Sweep bottom of closet. Depending on closet size, you might want to wash the floor with your trusty shmatte instead of trying to maneuver a mop in a small space

FURNITURE

CEILINGS AND WALLS

• Dust any furniture you have in the playroom. • Wipe down the bookcase and shake out books. Tape any torn covers. • Wipe tables and chairs. Scrub if needed. • Wall storage is a great way to keep things off the floor and make the room clutter-free if you don’t have space for everything in your closet.

• Dust your ceilings. Vacuum or dust the corners. • Wipe light fixture with a damp cloth. If you’re removing it, make sure it is dry before you replace it. • Dust your picture frames and wipe with a damp rag. • Dust blinds with a slightly damp cloth. • Wash windows and sills.

4

TIP:

FLOOR • • • •

Sweep, dust, and mop hardwood floors. RUGS: Most rugs, unless otherwise noted, can be machine washed. Air dry. CARPET: Resolve Carpet Triple Oxi Advanced works great on soiled spots. Sprinkle Febreze Powder for carpets before vacuuming to give the room a fresh, clean scent.

Use only clear containers for the playroom. It makes cleanup a breeze for the kids. If you keep your crafts in the playroom closet, put them on a high shelf so the little hands don’t get to them.

WANT TO SEE YOUR PLAYROOM SPARKLING AND CHOMETZ-FREE? Stay in beat with The Monsey View and get a free treat! Call 845-600-8484, option 5 on Monday, March 14 between 7:0010:00pm, and leave a voicemail informing us that your playroom is ready for Pesach. Include your name, address, and phone number. MOMMY, I’M BORED! 128

By Miriam Maytelis

“So, what are you making for Mishloach Manos?” It’s the time of year when kids and adults alike are trying to come up with original, pretty, and delicious ideas to present to their friends and family. While any sweet candy and chocolate will always be appreciated, you can use the opportunity to make your friend feel special by creating something to show how much she means to you. Use these suggestions as a springboard for your creativity.

“YOU’RE THE SPICE THAT MAKES LIFE POP!” Popcorn is a classic favorite. But you can raise the bar by adding in special spice and flavoring concoctions which will add zip and zing to this familiar food and your friend’s face. Mix a batch of each type of spice. (Feel free to make up your own, as well. You can even make a mystery Purim batch with unidentified ingredients…) Then, pour them into cute little jars or containers, and label them with a nice handmade tag or sticker. Fill up a bag with popcorn kernels or freshly popped popcorn, and tie it with a bow. Place all spices and popcorn/kernels into a pretty basket or container. You can add matching napkins and ribbon to make it look complete.

FLAVORING SUGGESTIONS: • Italian Seasoning: 2 T. salt, 2 tsp. red pepper flakes, 1 tsp. oregano, 1 tsp. garlic powder. • Smoky Seasoning: 1 T. smoked paprika, 2 T. salt, 1½ tsp. cumin, 1½ tsp. cinnamon. • Mexican Chocolate: 2 T. cocoa, 4 tsp. confectioners sugar, ¼ tsp. cinnamon, ¼ tsp. coarse salt. • Cinnamon Sugar Seasoning: 2 T. white sugar, 2 T. powdered sugar, 2 tsp. cinnamon, ½ tsp. salt.

“A FRIEND LIKE YOU IS SNOW MUCH FUN!”

Let your friend know just how much you enjoy her fun personality and great company by sending her a cute little snowman. And what’s more fun in the snow than a cup of hot cocoa? Using three different jars or containers, fill each one with a different part of a great hot chocolate treat. You can use hot cocoa powder, mini marshmallows, chocolate/peanut butter/ butterscotch chips, crushed mints, chopped coffee beans, chocolate etc. Once all jars are full, stack them up, securing them with some glue or tape. Decorate the jar tower with colored paper and a bit of fabric to add sweet personality to your snowman.

“YOU’RE A GREAT CATCH!”

Have you ever tried fishing? Did you go through the process of tying a worm to the fishing hook, casting the line, and sitting and waiting for a fish to nibble on the bait? You can try it the “candy way” by sending your friend some “live bait” and fishing paraphernalia to let her know you’re happy with the catch. Choose a tin fishing bucket or glass jar to fill up with gummy worms. Add in some fishing rods by tying twizzler strings to pretzel rods, and attaching a jelly fish to its end. You can also include fish-shaped crackers and some salt water taffy. Add any “fishy” decoration to make it look complete.

REMEMBER: THE MAIN THING IS NOT WHAT YOU GIVE, BUT HOW YOU GIVE IT!

Real Estate

Purchasing a Home “As Is” by Ann Zeilingold When you are hunting for a home, finding a house in the right neighborhood, that is the right size, and in move-in condition can be hard. When you are searching and a home becomes available that needs work, or is in “AS IS” condition, what should you do and what does it mean? There are probably multiple avenues to pursue in the above situation. I will discuss just a couple of ideas. Let’s start with a home that needs work. The first question that I would need to know is: What work is necessary? Is it just cosmetic, a home that needs a bit of TLC, or is it a disaster? Is the house missing plumbing and fixtures, the kitchen not functional, or there are broken windows and holes in the walls? If it is a disaster, it is likely that a bank won’t lend on the property, regardless of how much the client is putting down or how good a value the purchase is. The banks want to make sure that the collateral (the home for sale) is habitable. I met a client this past Sunday. He is in the construction line and he was buying a home that was a “handyman’s special.” I asked him, “Do the bathrooms work? Tell me about the kitchen.” When he told me that the kitchen was torn out, that the floors were stripped to plywood, and that there was a terrible mold problem in part of the house, I knew that this house satisfied the criteria of “disaster.” The only way to finance this type of house, would be a renovation style mortgage. A very common one is an FHA 203K loan. It is a loan that besides for financing the purchase, also provides money for renovations, for material, and for supplies. It even has a component for setting up an escrow to pay rent during the renovation period. Now let us say the house needs TLC, or needs a cosmetic facelift, and the client doesn’t want a renovation type loan with all the costs associated with it... A lot depends on the appraisal. The appraiser has to check a box saying that the value is either “as is” or “subject to”. If it is subject to

The banks want to make sure that the collateral (the home for sale) is habitable.

a repair, the bank will require the repairs to be made prior to closing, along with any repairs listed in the contract of sale. On a case-to-case basis, a bank will allow a closing with an escrow for minor non-safety related repairs. I have a situation now where a seller is selling a house “as is,” and because the price is so good, he does not want the contract to be subject to appraised value or condition. What we did for our client was order the appraisal prior to a signing contract, and then found out that there were no required repairs and that the value was solid. My first-time homebuyer could not sign a contract without this peace of mind. They had no plan B if there would be a problem. Not all banks will do this. There are many more instances and situations that come to my mind. Every real estate transaction is unique. Partnering with a seasoned realtor and an experienced mortgage loan officer is key in the negotiation and handling of these sensitive situations.
