POWERFUL FICTION
(Re: Power Tools, Issue 409)
Iโm really enjoying Power Tools by Esty Heller. The people in the story are so real and relatable, they feel as familiar as my sister or my neighborโฆ or even myself. Itโs eye-opening to view peopleโs behavior through the lens of a fiction story; I find myself acquiring a degree of insight thatโs hard to achieve in real life when your emotions cloud the moment. And itโs also just plain fun to read a great fiction story. With so much on the market that is not appropriate for a frum household, I really appreciate your magazine and the fiction fix you provide every week.

A MINUTE IN THE MORNING
(Re: Birchos Hashachar Contest, Issue 402)
I was a little shaken by the letter regarding the Birchos Hashachar contest by the woman who canโt find the few minutes to pause and thank Hashem each morning for all the blessings He has given her. I understand that mornings can be overwhelming, but if davening is on
your to-do list and you donโt eat before, as the halacha states, you will find the few minutes to say brachos. I say Birchos Hashachar while my kids eat breakfast or while I wait for the bus, and get my daily zechusim multiplied by their amens
For a long time, as a super busy mom, I davened just the minimum. Then several tragedies occurred, and the Vizhnitzer Rebbe, shlita, reminded us how important a womanโs prayers are and requested we try to daven the full Shacharis. I remember the overwhelming feeling I had, as I barely managed even the minimum before. But baruch Hashem, I put it on my morning schedule before breakfast and made it work! Even Erev Pesach or with a newborn, I make sure to daven, and it surely gives me extra siyata dโShmaya in my day. Imagine if someone sent you a smoothie in the morning, or a long-lost friend called you โ you would surely find the time to indulge. So find a few minutes to connect with Hashem and youโll surely see the blessing in your day and life.

Although long overdue, this letter is in reference to the article on ribbis several weeks ago.
I spoke to several talmidei chachamim about what was written in the article regarding not giving a child extra freeze pops and not babysitting an extra child when repaying a favor. These talmidei chachamim were aghast at the rulings stated in the article. What is the source for the rulings stated? It is important to be very careful when paskening for the public.

the Shulchan Aruch (Yoreh Deah, Hilchos Ribbos, siman 160, seโif 8), where it states that a person should not borrow something from his child and make an agreement to pay him back with ribbis; although everything a child acquires halachically belongs to his father, it is still assur to do so in order to prevent a child from being taught to do ribbis
The psak halacha for the babysitting story is based on the ruling of the scenario depicted in the next seif (Shulchan Aruch Yoreh Deah, Hilchos Ribbos, siman 160, seโif 9). The Shulchan Aruch tells of a person who asks his friend to work for him in is field, and it says that a person should not tell his friend to help him in the summer and offer that in exchange he will help his friend in the winter, because the work in the winter is more difficult. Since once a person has his friend work for him, he now owes his friend work, it is prohibited for him to repay him by doing harder work. This is a case of ribbis.
The ruling of this halacha applies to the story in the article. When a deal is made to exchange babysitting services, it is considered a regular job for which ribbis cannot be paid. Therefore, two people should not make a deal to babysit one child in exchange of babysitting for two.
Rabbi Chaim Friedman is the mechaber of the sefer Sar Hilchos Ribbis. For additional ribbis-related questions, Beis Horaโah Lโhilchos Ribbis can be reached at 845-731-6029.

IN THE DAYS OF THE BRISKER RAV, Rav Chaim Soloveitchik, Ztโl, the government enacted decrees against the Talmud Torahs. Seeing no way out, the community leaders decided to slip some cash to the official in charge. Perhaps that would get him to cancel the new laws.
The problem was that this particular official was known to be very stringent regarding every detail of the law, and he would not accept bribes under any circumstances. The leaders surmised that in all likelihood, attempting to bribe him would only backfire. Instead of ruling in their favor, the official would probably inform the authorities of their subversion, or worse.
Rav Chaim Brisker came up with a plan. He announced that he would speak with the official in the only language that speaks to such individuals โ the language of money.
The community leaders were afraid. If Rav Chaim Brisker would be caught attempting to bribe the official, the consequences would be severe, not to mention the chillul Hashem that would result.
โLet one of us risk our lives instead,โ they suggested.
But Rav Chaim declined. โDonโt worry, I wonโt put myself in danger, and I surely wonโt endanger the entire community,โ he said. โPlease give me the money and I will take care of this matter.โ
Money was raised, and Rav Chaim prepared to meet with the official. Despite it being a sweltering hot summer day, he donned his heavy fur coat.
Only after making it clear that he would not budge from his opinion did the official let Rav Chaim Brisker in. He was surprised to see the rav wearing his coat. โAre you not hot?โ he asked.
โOf course I am hot,โ the rav replied. โI was hot before I put on the coat, and now I am even hotter.โ
โIf so,โ responded the official, โwhy are you wearing that coat?โ
Rav Chaim explained, โLast night, I had a dream. I dreamt that today will be a cold day, with snowfall toward evening. When I awoke, I remembered the dream and decided to put on the coat so I will be prepared even before the flakes cover the ground.โ
The official laughed. โWho ever heard such a thing? Look outside and see the gorgeous warm weather. Do you know which season we are in? Do you really believe it will snow in the middle of the summer?โ
โYes,โ the Brisker Rav replied. โI have no doubt it will begin to snow today.โ Then he added, โI am so convinced, I am even willing to bet on it!โ Rav Chaim offered the exact amount of money that he had brought along with him.
Both sides agreed to the bet.
As the official watched Rav Chaim leave, he wondered to himself how it could be that the prominent rabbi of the Jews who was respected for his wisdom and intelligence could accept a silly dream as true. Deep down, he felt a tinge of
In this weekโs parsha , Moshe instructs Klal Yisroel to pursue justice and appoint judges who will rule without corruption or favoritism. The pasuk highlights the prohibition against bribery: โYou shall not take a bribe, for bribery blinds the eyes of the wise and distorts the words of tzaddikimโ (Devarim 16:19).
We would assume that one who accepts bribery with the intent of bending justice is not a tzaddik . Why does the Torah tell us that bribery distorts the words of tzaddikim?
anxiety. Could it be that there was truth to the rabbiโs dream? Would the rabbi win the bet? He waited out the day with bated breath.
As the sun set, he calmed down. The day had passed with no drop in temperature, just like any other hot summer day. The official worried that Rav Chaim would not return to pay the bet. โIf necessary, we will send the police to bring him here!โ he announced.
It wasnโt necessary. Bright and early the following morning, Rav Chaim Brisker arrived. With the cash in his outstretched hand, he said in a sorrowful voice, โYou won the bet! I will not go back on my word. Here is your prize!โ
The official happily took the money, and Rav Chaim Brisker left the room without saying another word.
Rav Chaim Brisker called the community leaders together and told them that the money was safely in the officialโs hands. When they heard that the money had been โearnedโ justly, they were worried. โHow will it help us?โ
Rav Chaim was quick to placate them. โAs long as the money was not in the officialโs hands, we stood no chance at convincing him to annul the decree. But now that he received the money, regardless of how he got it, we can be sure that the decree will be lifted. Once a person receives money from another, the money changes his whole train of thought โ without him even realizing it.โ
Within a short time, the Briskerโs Ravโs prediction came true.
Obviously, one who accepts bribery solely for the sake of bribery would not be called a tzaddik by the Torah. But even a tzaddik can unknowingly come to rule improperly if a financial benefit to him is involved.
Even without any intent of bribery, a yerei Shamayim could be involuntarily blinded to the truth once he accepts money from a litigant. Once money enters oneโs possession, his perspective is affected.
Thatโs the power of bribery. Money manipulates even unsuspecting minds.
Adapted from the teachings of Rav Mordechai Freundlich, Ztโl.
In the time of the Beis Hamikdash, towns with less than 120 residents had a beis din of three judges who could decide on financial disputes, but had no power to rule on life and death cases.
Towns with 120 residents or more had a Sanhedrin of 23 judges who were allowed to judge capital cases.
The official laughed. โDo you really believe it will snow in the middle of the summer?โ

Local officials representing New York State, Ramapo, Spring Valley and law enforcement gathered in Spring Valley to discuss significant issues affecting the Union Road area. The meeting was arranged by Congressman Mike Lawler and held on the morning of August 11.
The meeting was held on Union Road where Elm Street, Anthony Drive and Park Street all converge. The sounds of cars, buses and trucks whizzing by offered a real life illustration of the communityโs concerns. Among those in attendance were Lawler, Senator Bill Weber, Assemblyman John McGowan, Ramapo Supervisor Michael Specht, Ramapo Police Chief Martin
Reilly, Spring Valley Police Chief Richard Oleszczuk, County Legislator Aron Wieder, Ramapo Highway Superintendent Fred Brinn, and Rockland District Attorneyโs Office Chief of Detectives Pete Walker and Drug Task Force Director Matt Ryder.
Dozens of accidents have taken place on that stretch of Union Road, particularly at the Elm Road intersection, which feeds directly into Twin Avenue, essentially making it a fiveway intersection. The incidents have fallen under the jurisdictions of both the Town of Ramapo and the Village of Spring Valley, emphasizing the need for a joint collaboration to address the issue.
Possible solutions discussed included installing stop signs, a traffic light, or mitigating the flow of traffic by banning left turns or turning some streets into one-way streets. Lawler rejected the idea of installing a roundabout at the intersection, explaining that it would require the acquisition of significant amounts of property, including several houses, under the law of eminent domain, with Spring Valley and Ramapo officials deciding that a joint survey was the best approach to the problem.
Also on the morningโs agenda was the ongoing crime problem in the Twin Road area, which has become a center of drug activity in recent months. Walker stressed the importance of communal input, noting that civilian tips submitted anonymously to the District Attorneyโs Office are extremely helpful. Also discussed were the ongoing difficulties faced by law enforcement in New York State, with current bail laws putting criminals back on the streets within hours, turning the possibility of any significant change into a lengthy process.
The two separate issues discussed at the roundtable share a common theme, with Lawler explaining, โWe just want to make sure that our residents are safe.โ
Ramapo shone brightly last week, with town-wide lighting improvements bringing Governor Kathy Hochulโs plan to replace half a million streetlights with state-of-the-art LEDs to the finish line three years ahead of schedule.
Elected officials joined with representatives of the New York Power Authority on the morning of August 8 to celebrate the culmination of the first phase of the lighting project in Ramapo, watching as a new smart streetlight was installed on West Maple Avenue at the corner of Smolley Drive. Nearly 4,000 new streetlights were installed throughout Ramapo, with another 1,300 older fixtures swapped for new LED models.
Phase 2 of the lighting project will have more of a wow fac-
tor, said Supervisor Michael Specht, illuminating locations that have poor lighting, or no lighting at all; 2,500 addition-
โWe are doing everything we can with our partners, the New York Power Authority, on this great project to make this town a safer and better place for all of our residents,โ said
While the celebration focused on illuminating darkened areas of Ramapo, County Executive Ed Day noted that the new streetlights also bring a safety component to the table.
โWhat this is really about is safety, security, and, letโs not forget, responsiveness,โ observed Day, adding, โIโm a former police commander and one of the best defenses you can
NYPA spokesperson Alex Chiaravalle said that the agency has been working closely with municipalities statewide
โRamapo has been a great partner,โ said Chiaravalle. โThis will improve safety throughout the town, improve pedestrian visibility and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.โ
In addition to being more energy efficient, the new LED streetlights are dimmable, have instantaneous outage reporting and are equipped for additional features that may be added in the future, including weather sensors, cameras and other smart and safety features.

power outages likely as early as 2025.
USA Today reported that the New York Independent System Operator, known as NYISO, said that having air conditioners running 24 hours a day will likely trigger brownouts or even blackouts during summer heatwaves with temperatures that top 98ยฐ. Until now, the state has relied on what are known as peaker-plants to cope with the increased demand for energy when the temperature soars, but 37 of those plants are due to be shut down because they are unable to meet new standards set by New Yorkโs Depart of Environmental Conservation. According to the NYISO report, the stateโs renewable energy program isnโt moving fast enough to fill the gap created by their closure, with the increased push toward the electrification of vehicles and buildings placing an even larger burden on the electrical grid, further exacerbating the problem.
In addition to highlighting potential issues, which will be particularly troublesome in New York City, the NYISO report explored possible solutions, which could include allowing some peaker-plants to remain open even as others are shut down. Hydroelectric power from Canada, which could arrive in the city by the spring of 2026, is another alternative that could close the energy gap in the long term.
Despite the reportโs predictions, officials in Albany expressed confidence in the stateโs ability to avoid power outages while still meeting its climate goals.
โWe are committed to ensuring New Yorkers have a reliable and affordable power supply โ and we can do this while accomplishing our nation-leading climate goals,โ read a statement released by the Hochul administration. โGovernor Hochul remains fully committed to rapidly decreasing emissions and setting an example for how clean energy and reliability can go hand in hand.โ
A paroled murder who had been living in a Hillcrest halfway house since the end of July is no longer staying in Rockland County, much to the relief of area residents.
Robert Chambers had been paroled to an Eckerson Road home on July 25 after serving 15 years behind bars on an assault conviction. That stint in prison was the second for Chambers, who was released from jail in 2003 after serving 15 years on a manslaughter and burglary conviction, which had earned him the nicknames โPreppy Killerโ and โCentral Park Strangler.โ
County Executive Ed Day, a former NYPD commander, expressed his frustration early last week that Chambers had been sent to Rockland without any prior notification given, advising anyone who was approached by Chambers to call 911 or the Ramapo Police Department to report the incident.
But by August 10, Chambers was gone, with Monsey Scoop crediting law enforcement for his departure. According to New12 Westchester, Chambers is now living in a Queens halfway house where he remains under supervision until July 2028.

Chevi bullies Fraidy at their grandparentsโ Seder.
Only Mrs. Miller could pull off a joint Chol Hamoed outing with two families whose last desire was to go on a joint Chol Hamoed outing.
Really, there was no way to say no. Mrs. Miller was the greatest excuseneutralizer, and you could never argue with her logic. Especially when the excuses (โChaim Tzvi is worried he wonโt make it back on time for Mincha,โ and, โYou know how OZ is when he travels, he complains that heโs nauseous the entire way,โ and, โShanaโs scared of boatsโ) were poor in the first place.
โWeโll be back way before the zman Itโs a twenty-five minute drive. And Shana doesnโt have to go on any boat if she doesnโt want to, youโll anyway stay behind with Shifra, right? Come on, Lani, donโt be lazy.โ
What could she tell her mother? That she hadnโt enjoyed Rivaโs company at the Seder?
She wondered if Riva had also tried
getting out of joining, but she obviously couldnโt ask her. If Riva had tried, she certainly hadnโt succeeded, because sometime midday, Lani found herself standing next to her sister at the shore, waving to their parents, husbands and kids as they rowed off in three little rowboats. Shana, to Laniโs frustration, hadnโt put up the slightest protest, and Lani couldnโt stand the triumphant look on her motherโs face as sheโd gleefully jumped into the boat.
โOne minute, whereโs Fraidy?โ Lani asked Riva as the boats pulled away. โI donโt see her on any boat.โ
โShe didnโt come along.โ
โHuh?โ
โShe made plans with a friend to do plaster painting.โ
โUh, which friend?โ
It was weird for Riva to say โa friendโ when their daughters were classmates and both of them basically knew all the girls in the class.
โShevy Schwartz.โ
โOh. Aha. And you didnโt prefer she comes along with everyone here?โ
โNo.โ
There was something in that no that told Lani to back off really quickly, so she did. She physically took a few steps back, and she started rocking the stroller containing a sound-asleep Shifra.
Riva was still facing the water, watching the rowboats shrink into the distance. Theyโd rented the boats for an hour, and Lani and Riva had stayed behind with their babies. That meant that for the next hour, the two of them would be standing around, together, waiting for the boats to return.
There was only so long Lani could rock a sleeping baby. And there was only so long Riva could rigidly stand facing the water without saying a word.
That meant that they would have to talk. And of course, when you wrack your brain to come up with something to talk about, your mind draws a stubborn blank.
She started rooting through the bags hanging from her stroller and pulled out a Ziploc with sliced apples. Food was always a great icebreaker, wasnโt it?
โDo you want some apples?โ she asked Riva.
Riva seemed a little shocked at the question. โUm, okay,โ she said. They moved a little further back and sat down on a bench together. The sound of chewing was amplified in the stifling silence, and finally Lani thought of something to talk about.
โMy neighbor tells me that Yaakov helped her daughter with the plans for her house?โ
Of course, she was hardly done asking her question when she realized it was the wrong topic to bring up, being that Riva knew this neighbor: She and Gittel Indig were sharing Maddie now.
But if Riva put it together, she didnโt say anything about the neighbor. She actually seemed relieved that theyโd finally started a conversation. โYes, heโs actually getting more and more into it. He was hired by a big-name architect to digitize his drawings, so heโs getting some good practice.โ
โOh, thatโs great. So, um, like, are you going to leave your job now?โ
โI wish. You donโt just leave a day job like that, obviously. Thereโs something about a secure income; itโs hard to give it up. Hopefully, when Yaakov starts his own business.... It
doesnโt happen overnight.โ
There was something inexplicably irritating about Rivaโs words, and Lani suddenly wished she hadnโt started this particular conversation. Riva, though, seemed perfectly comfortable talking, and she went right on. โItโs like this in many fields, but especially in architecture. The potential is huge โ really, the sky, or maybe we should call it the skyscrapers?โ She gave a little wink and continued, โis the limit. But you start small, accept all the boring work, and earning any money at this stage is just a bonus.โ
The relief of making conversation shriveled in Laniโs chest. She watched Riva help herself to another apple wedge. The ice had certainly broken, for Riva at least.
Lani was secretly gratified when Shifra stirred. She all but banged the stroller into a sitting position so she could feed her a yogurt. She applied her entire focus to the very intricate task โ spoon-mouthnapkin, spoon-mouth-napkin. Riva either got bored or uncomfortable, and she stood up and started strolling along the shore, texting someone, or at least pretending to. They didnโt make any more โconversationโ until the boats finally returned.
Later that night, with the kids in bed and Mrs. Miller getting started on the cooking for the second days, Lani and Chaim Tzvi stepped outside to take a walk. Lani repeated the conversation sheโd had with Riva at the water. โI donโt get it,โ she finished off. โThe Strohs are sleeping on mattresses bloated with cash, but they chas vโshalom canโt wait another day to get their entire loan back? They have a double income now, for goodness sake. I mean, theyโre entitled to earn and save as much as they can, itโs none of my business. I just thought the idea of terminating the loan was that Riva wanted to quit her job.โ
Chaim Tzvi patted his pocket, pulled out an envelope, glanced inside, then stuffed it into a different pocket. โLook, Lani, I know youโre upset. But one thing I learned from my line of work. You canโt lead other peopleโs businesses.โ
โAnd also to judge your sister favorably,โ Lani added. โI know that, Chaim Tzvi. I justโฆ I know.โ * * * * *

Hereโs a great recipe for a homemade cranberry drink that is very healthy and rich in beneficial nutrients:
๏ก One ounce of cranberry juice concentrate
๏ก One cup cold water
๏ก Two large spoons of apple cider vinegar and
๏ก One small spoonful of lemon juice Optional: For a great taste, add a small spoon of raw honey. Drink and enjoy!
๏ก Above all, it can help prevent and treat urinary tract infections (UTI)
Cranberries are primarily taken by drinking the juice pressed from them. Only 5% of cranberries are eaten whole. Interestingly, 440 berries equal just one pound of weight. And 4,440 cranberries go into producing a gallon cranberry juice! That should give you an idea of how much nutrients are packed into each cup of juice.

Cranberry supplements are available for you to enjoy the benefits of cranberries without having to eat actual cranberries every day. Even more, you get even better results from cranberry supplements than from the berries themselves because a capsule can have more milligrams condensed inside over a cup of juice you also avoid the sugar and other additives that are usually found in commercial preparations of cranberry juice.

It is important to note that various types of cranberry juice are sold today, and some of them have never seen a cranberry. Ensure the label states that it contains โcranberry concentrateโ or โreal juice.โ You should also know that cranberries are naturally slightly sour, so some cranberry products are loaded with sugar. Be sure to check the label and choose the product with the least sugar added.

To your health,
after Isru Chag, when everyone had been out of school for too many days to count and there was already new laundry on top of all the Yom Tov laundry that wasnโt done yet? Did it?
โIโm not s-s-sitting in one classroom with her, Iโm not,โ Fraidy cried. โIf sheโs going to school today, Iโm ss-staying home.โ
Inhale, exhale. Active listening. โYou arenโt going to school?โ
โNo!โ
โYou really donโt want to go to school if Cheviโs there.โ
It sounded corny, but this mirroring method almost always worked. It made the child feel heard โ which was what they needed most โ and often even helped them clarify for themselves what bothered them and how they wanted to deal with it.
โI really donโt want to miss s-sschool. What should I do, Ma?โ
Her stutter had improved over Yom Tov. This sudden regression was disturbing. Riva pretended not

Maple.
RIVA COULDNโT THINK OF ANYTHING TO DO OTHER THAN ENCOURAGE FRAIDY TO REMAIN STRONG, AND GIVE HER SOME TOOLS FOR HOW TO REACT IF CHEVI TRIED HURTING HER
to notice and went right on, allowing Fraidy to lead the conversation.
โWhat do you think you should do?โ
โStay home!โ
โDo you want to stay home?โ
โWeโre having the auction from our Pesach contest today. I donโt want to miss it.โ
Riva waited for her to continue.
โIโm going to ignore her the whole day,โ Fraidy said. โI donโt care.โ
Fraidy was trying to convince herself, and Riva really had no idea what the right thing to do was. Staying home would serve as a bandage; it wouldnโt make the problem go away. Maybe the time she and Chevi spent apart would make everyone drop this craziness?
Riva couldnโt think of anything to do other than encourage Fraidy to remain strong, and give her some tools for how to react if Chevi tried hurting her.
But which tools? How do you stand up for yourself when someone belittles you like that?
The question teased her. Do you have any tools? Do you know how to stand up for yourself, to protect yourself from constant blame and shame?
Fraidy decided to walk with Riva. On the way out of the house, Riva stuck a candy bar into her daughterโs briefcase. Just a little something sweet, a small gesture of encouragement.
When they got to the school, Fraidy actually seemed to be doing pretty well.
She gave a casual wave and headed toward the entrance with a swift and steady gait.
It was Rivaโs knees that suddenly felt weak. She watched the key chains on her daughterโs briefcase bounce, heard their faint jangle, fading as the distance between her and Fraidy widened.
She couldnโt take it. She couldnโt process the injustice, the absurdity, the cruelty. One human being inflicting shame and fear on another, for no reason. To gain some convoluted sense of satisfaction, or superiority, nothing more.
She couldnโt take it for Fraidy. She couldnโt take it for herself.
She couldnโt go to work.
The thought was so startling, it was like a gust of wind had swept past her, sending a tremor through her entire body.
She couldnโt โ and with a resolute stride past the school building, she made up her mind: She wouldnโt.
Ten minutes later, she was back home. Yaakov was still there, spreading butter on Tzippyโs toast.
โRiva?โ he asked, surprised. โDid you forget something?โ
Riva dropped her bag on the counter and unzipped her jacket. โIโm not going to work today,โ she told him.
โWhatโs the matter? Youโre not feeling well?โ
โIโm feeling just fine. Physically, anyway. Iโve justโฆ had it.โ
โUh, so like, did you quit?โ
โNo. I mean, yes. I mean, I canโt go back.โ
Yaakov put Tzippyโs plate on the table and washed his hands.
โIโฆ I donโt know what to say. I guess thatโs, um, great news? Like, we need to celebrate. Did you tell Mr. Gabioff?โ
Riva gave a horrified gasp. โOh, no!โ
โSo thenโฆ you didnโt actually quit. Youโre justโฆ playing hooky?โ
Rivaโs phone rang. โItโs him,โ she whispered.
โSo tell him.โ
โI canโt.โ
โOf course you can.โ
โCan you answer?โ
โMe? What should I tell him?โ
โI donโt know, tell him Iโm not
available.โ
The phone stopped ringing.
Mr. Gabioff called again fifteen minutes later. Yaakov took the call and told him that his wife wasnโt available and wouldnโt be coming into the office that day.
โOr ever again,โ Riva tacked on when he hung up.
โWell, how does that feel?โ
How did it feel? It was supposed to feel liberating. She was supposed to feel light and heady and invincible.
But the sound of key chains jangling echoed in her ears, and all Riva felt was an overwhelming wave of exhaustion.

At about 6 p.m. on Sunday afternoon, the familiar loudspeaker would crackle through the neighborhood. โCotton candy! cotton candy for one dollar!โ Iโd run to the window to watch the familiar white van park across the street and the cotton candy man step out. Before he could get his machine set up, there was already a cluster of kids standing around, watching or waiting for their sticky treats.
While I donโt recall being treated to his sugary puffs often, I can still hear his weekly call. He provided dozens of neighborhood kids with an iconic childhood memory.
How did this whimsical treat make it into the memories of children around the globe for more than a century?
Perhaps he was looking for more customers in his clinic, or for a more noble treat, but itโs certainly ironic: Cotton candy is said to have been invented by a dentist!
Dr. William Morrison graduated dental school
in 1890. Just seven years later, he was the brains behind one of the most internationally acclaimed, kid-loved treats. Morrison, who lived in Nashville, Tennessee, teamed up with candy maker John C. Wharton to invent a prototype contraption that spun sugar into fluffy clouds.
His model was made of a heated, rotating bowl
Fun, flavorsome, and full of fluff โ why reach for the clouds if you can taste โem?
with multiple holes. As sugar was poured inside, it caramelized and exited through the holes, turning into light strands that he called โfairy floss.โ
His next step was to market his new kind of candy. In 1904, the duo introduced their delightful snack at the St. Louis Worldโs Fair. They brought along their fairy floss machine and served the treat in wooden boxes, at 25 cents apiece (that would be $8.57 today).
The sugary treats were an instant bestseller.
Fairy Floss wasnโt cheap, costing about half the rate of attending the fair itself, but people were intrigued. They clamored around the machine as it sputtered out airy clouds of sugar and could not help but splurge. A small taste was enough to earn rave reviews. More than 60,000 servings were sold at the fair, and over the next six months, a total of 68,655 boxes of fairy floss were sold.
Cotton candy, as fairy floss soon became known in the United States, has become a staple at concession stands at carnivals, circuses, and amusement parks ever since.
In truth, Morrison and Wharton werenโt the first to spin up this idea. Spun sugar has been around since the 15th century.
In 1574, when King Henry III of France visited Venice, he was honored with a platter of 1,000 unique items made of spun sugar.
As you can tell, this original form of cotton candy was an extravagant treat, reserved for royals and the rich. With no technology to spin sugar, Renaissance-era chefs in Italy figured out a way to achieve similar results by hand. They heated huge pans of sugar and manually twisted it into strings, which they draped over broom sticks. These crunchy strands and nests of sugar involved much hard work and were very expensive, far beyond the means of the public.
But in royal courts, this new confection attracted the attention

of the chefs, who were excited to learn this new technique. Soon, they grew proficient at creating lavish desserts made of sugar. A French cookbook named these creations Silver Web and Gold Web. The airy treats were probably worth their weight in gold!
It took several centuries and two Tennessee men to bring cotton candy to the masses.
With their new technology, the sugary treat became a global craze. Its international popularity is obviously given the long list of names in various languages. Americans call it cotton candy, the British say candy floss, and the French have dubbed it la barbe a papa, which means โPapaโs beard.โ In Eretz Yisrael, kids jump for yambambam, and in the Netherlands they crave sugar spider.
In 1921, another dentist, Dr. Josef Lascaux of New Orleans, improved the machineโs design, and trademarked the name โcotton candy.โ
In time, cotton candy machines grew more and more efficient. Today, a batch of cotton candy can be ready in less than 30 seconds, and commercial machines can whip up as many as six or
seven servings per minute (although the speed also depends on the skill of the person operating the equipment).
The most popular flavors in the United States are blue raspberry and pink vanilla, but a kaleidoscope of inimitable flavors exist, including banana, watermelon, and chocolate.
Back to the dentistโs chair, is cotton candy really bad for you?
Nobody will tell you that cotton candy is as good for you as fresh fruit, but you may be surprised to hear that itโs not as bad as you might think. With only one ingredient, a typical serving contains about 110 calories. Thatโs fewer calories and less sugar than a can of soda. It also has no fat content.
Are you the skeptical kind of mother who still doesnโt think cotton candy is okay? Thereโs one day a year designed especially for you! December 7 was officially nominated as National Cotton Candy Day, with no specific celebration program other than sinking little teeth into puffs of fluff and sharing paper sticks with swirls of magic with your friends. Back in 2006, young Morgan Hartman and her family were vacationing, just โgetting away from it all.โ There were other kids staying in their hotel, and when a ball landed near Morgan, she excitedly headed toward it, eager to participate in their game. Instead of welcoming her, however, the crew of kids grabbed their ball and walked away. Morgan was devastated. The pain on her face haunted her father, Gordon Hartman, who yearned to see Morgan feel both safe and accepted in spite of her cognitive and physical disabilities. For weeks afterward he wondered if there was some place where everyone could feel included and have fun.
If not, he decided, he would be the one to build it.
Gordon Hartman was never one to shirk hard work. At the age of fifteen heโd started his own landscaping business, and by nineteen, had saved enough money to go into construction. Over the next two decades, Hartmanโs business grew into the largest construction and development companies in San Antonio, Texas.
But his heart was elsewhere, and Gordon eventually sold those businesses to pursue his familyโs dream of creating a more inclusive society for people with special needs. At first they opened a foundation, but after the ball incident, Gordon felt the urge to do more to actively break down barriers and simultaneously build people up. To that end, he called a meeting.
โI invited doctors and therapists and teachers and people who have special needsโฆ and hundreds of people showed up. I thought, this is kind of cool because we donโt really know what weโre going to be talking about!โ Hartman recalled. He came to the meeting armed with only blank paper and a dream, and presented the idea of a barrier-breaking recreational space. โIf we build this park with the theory of trying to bring down that barrier, what would be in it?โ he asked those assembled. The ideas started flowing and, more than eight pages later, the skeletal outline of Morganโs Wonderland had taken shape.
Bringing the vision to life was the next step, and Gordon Hartman refused to think inside the box. His goal was not to develop a park that was geared specifically toward people with special needs, but to create a park that was inclusive of the entire family. When selecting an architectural team, he specifically hired people who had never worked on amusement parks in the past. He wanted visionaries who would be uninhibited by previous experiences. He wanted to dream big โ and without boundaries. He wanted to make the impossible possible.
Morganโs Wonderland opened in 2010, and though all its attractions can accommodate many medical needs (including ventilators), you wouldnโt know it. Aesthetically, it looks like any other park. But wheelchair users are able to ride their chairs straight into specially designed chariots that move up and down on the typical carousel, or circle high above the crowd in accessible gondolas on the Ferris wheel. There are also boats, trains and swings that accommodate disabilities, and pleasant staff members who are trained to patiently help clients aboard their rides โ even if that means spending ten minutes helping them get settled. Some members of the amazing staff, in fact, are people with disabilities.
Despite the success of this amazing park, however, its location means super sizzling summer days, and that results in a reduction in traffic. To solve the low-flow issue, Gordon Hartman and his team opened up a second park right next door in 2017: Morganโs Inspiration Island, featuring a waterpark that is accessible to everyone. Over at Shipwreck Island, visitors can engage in water battles, while Calypso Cave is all about making music while sopping wet. Rainbow Reef offers an allinclusive experience with warm water to accommodate those who have muscular or circulatory issues that preclude cold water play.
The fun doesnโt end. A third park was opened just two years ago, called Morganโs Wonderland Sports Complex. This features inclusive and accessible baseball, football, basketball, tennis and volleyball courts.
Itโs this incredible ability to accommodate that makes Morganโs parks so wonderful; theyโve taken just about everything into consideration. Upon entry, caregivers are given the option of receiving waterproof electronic bracelets that are synced to security cameras so they can easily find a family member or client in case they become separated. Theyโre also offered waterproof wheelchairs in three sizes to ensure that expensive medical equipment doesnโt get damaged during play.
If thatโs not impressive enough, hereโs the clincher: All of this is provided free of charge for people with a special needs diagnosis. Admission works on the honor system, and if one claims to have special needs, theyโre admitted to the park without paying a penny. โAnd if you lie about it, you have a special need,โ Hartman quips.
No better place to spend quality time than in the Fleischmanns Mountains. Your dream getaway starts here!
When the Hartmans realized their dream would have an opening price tag of $35 million, they werenโt fazed; they knew the vision was worthwhile. They also werenโt bothered by the fact that theyโd be losing over a million dollars a year by giving free admissions. But they did need a solution. Aside from yearly fundraising, and admission fees for people without disabilities, Gordon Hartman runs a 75-acre soccer arena right next to the Morgan complexes. He specifically built it with a two-pronged goal: to raise money to cover the costs of running a largely free-admission park, and to raise awareness about the need for special needs inclusion.
โWhen thousands of people come to play soccer on these fourteen different fields, it brings awareness,โ Hartman says. โWhen they come here, they learn, and it brings the exposure up of those who have special needs, and of inclusion.โ
Gordon Hartman says that one of the most heartwarming things he sees is children without a diagnosis playing sideby-side with those who have one.
โMorganโs Wonderland is not just about the sticks and bricks,โ he says. โTo me, itโs about a movement. Itโs about an approach of being able to do something different. Itโs about saying, โthe time is now to get outside the box.โโ

A couple centuries ago, while facing wars, famines, plagues, epidemics and wild animals, humans looked around and decided they needed additional ways to risk their lives. And thus, roller coasters were invented. Even more surprising, the idea has stuck around. The feeling of hurtling down a steep incline and feeling your stomach drop and your breath get snatched away is truly like no other. Creative engineers and thrill seekers have pushed the limits of what we can do with roller coasters, and there are many absolutely terrifying ones around the world. Iโve collected the most interesting ones here so you can experience them from the safety of your home. Youโre very welcome.
The precursor to the roller coaster was first historically recorded in 17th century Russia. There, folks built hills of ice up to 70 or 80 feet high and used sleds to go down 50-degree drops. When summer came around, they didnโt want to give up their sledding activities, so they built a cart on wheels that went down a track on a hill. In the 1800s, a French builder saw the โice mountainsโ in Russia and brought the idea over to Paris. Since the French winters arenโt as cold and icy as Russiaโs, they designed benches on wheels that were locked onto a 600-foot long wooden track. It was built in a heart shape with stairs going up the center and two tracks going down on either side. The benches would get towed to the top, and gravity did the rest. This was called the โPromenades-Aรฉriennes,โ which means โthe aerial walk.โ The Parisians loved it, and several more of these early roller coasters were built around Paris.
Paris continued to test the limits of physics and gravity. They were the first to have a roller coaster with a loop. In 1846, they built a roller coaster with a 13-foot-high loop, but it was not intended for the public. Instead, one performer would ride it in a wicker basket.
In 1901, one of the first looped roller coasters in North America was built on Coney Island, the famous Loop the Loop. It was the first roller coaster to have an elliptical loop rather than a perfect circle โ just as roller coasters are built today. It also relied on the laws of physics rather than harnesses to keep riders in the cart (yes, you read that right: no seatbelts). They actually sold tickets for people to stand on the side and watch passengers ride the roller coaster, and made more money from the spectators than actual riders. The Loop the Loop shut down in 1910 because it wasnโt a very comfortable ride and didnโt get many customers.
The oldest roller coaster in the world that is still operating today is located in Pennsylvania and was built in 1902. Called Leap the Dips, this wooden roller coaster is in the shape of a figure eight, has a nine-foot drop, and travels at about ten miles an hour. Considering that itโs over 100 years old, those stats are pretty impressive! The roller coaster was in use until 1985, when it was shut down due to disrepair โ but it was refurbished from 1997 to 1999 after campaigns to get it working again. It has been proudly carrying riders since then, and has been designated a National Historic Landmark.
The Kingda Ka, located in Six Flags in New Jersey, is the tallest roller coaster in the world and the fastest in North America. Its highest peak is a whopping 456-feet tall and is reached by a perfectly straight, 90-degree ascent of 418 feet, and has an equally vertical fall on the other side. It has a hydraulic launch and accelerates from 0 to 128 miles per hour in 3.5 seconds.

For those of us who love getting flipped in the air many times consecutively, The Smiler in England is just for you. This roller coaster opened in 2013 and holds the world record for the most loops, with fourteen inversions throughout the three-minute ride. The center of the roller coaster has a spider-like structure that adds some slightly creepy elements to the ride (meant to manipulate the riders into smiling, hence the name). At different points of the ride, passengers get tickled, sprayed with water and mist, see bright flashing lights and hear laughter soundtracks, all while getting dropped and twisted and flipped along the tracks.
Iโm not just being dramatic, Insane is the actual name of this wild roller coaster in Sweden. The seats arenโt on the tracks; they swing freely off the sides. Throughout the ride, the seats spin and flip completely upside down while climbing up and dropping down the tracks at 37 miles an hour. Not for the faint of heart!
Want some water action with your roller coaster ride? Head to Japan for a rather dainty ride on the Vanish roller coaster. It sports light pink tracks and a relatively slow and not very crazy ride, but has a surprising twist when it suddenly descends into an underwater tunnel in the middle of a pool. A sprinkler surrounding the tunnel opening sprays water to create a diving illusion, and the riders are treated to a light show for the few seconds that theyโre underwater. Although it looks very cool in pictures, riders have said that the experience is pretty underwhelming. (Cancel your flight tickets to Japan?)
The Gravity Max, located in Taiwan, is a unique roller coaster experience. After going up a hill to a horizontal platform that sticks out midair, the platform sloooowly tilts to a complete 90-degree angle and noisily connects to the remainder of the tracks. After a few seconds of being completely vertical while waiting for the tracks to lock into place, the coaster drops down into a dark tunnel before coming out and going right into a loop.
There are reports that the second tilting roller coaster in the world is set to debut here in the U.S.A. sometime in 2023. You can be sure that you will not find me there.

Going down a steep roller coaster drop can be exhilarating and scary, but going straight down isnโt even the worst kind of drop there is. At the Nickelodeon Universe in the American Dream Mall, thereโs a roller coaster that takes drops to a new level. The Shellraiser roller coaster has a drop with a 121.5-degree angle, which means that it goes down vertically and then bends back, beyond vertical. The car pauses at the top in a vertical position right before dropping so that for a few seconds the track disappears from sight and the riders see straight down to the ground. Itโs the steepest drop in the world, overtaking the previous record holder, the Takabisha roller coaster in Japan, which has a drop angle of 121-degrees.
Ironically, the Russian term for roller coasters is โะฐะผะตัะธะบะฐะฝัะบะธะต ะณะพัะบะธ,โ which translates as โAmerican Mountain,โ while in many other countries โ Spain for example โ the name for roller coaster is โla montaรฑa rusaโ which translates as โRussian Mountain.โ
Russia calls it American Mountain since America was the first to have a modern roller coaster, while places like Spain named it after Russia since they were the first ones to have high sledding mountains. It all goes round and round. Kinda like a Loop the Loop.
If you look at the shape of roller coaster loops, youโll notice that theyโre never a perfect circle. This isnโt by chance, but rather because of physics. Before the Loop the Loop on Coney Island, a different roller coaster was built there in 1895, called the Flip Flap Railway. This was the first looped roller coaster in the world, and it had a loop that was perfectly circular. Though it seemed like the logical choice for a loop, engineers and scientists quickly realized that they were wrong.
There are lots of forces at play when going around a loop. In order to complete a loop, a very high acceleration is needed, since there are strong gravitational forces trying to bring the cart, and its riders, back down to earth. These forces can slow down the cart. Therefore, in order for the roller coaster to go all around the loop, the acceleration forces need to be stronger than the gravitational forces. In a loop, the intensity of the acceleration depends on two things: the speed, and the angles of the turn. A circleโs angles, which are the same all around, slows down acceleration.
On the circular loop of the Flip Flap Railway, they used high speeds when sending the cart into the loop, which was uncomfortable for riders. But it got even worse, since as it completed the loop the acceleration forces dropped, and gravity became stronger. The human body isnโt able to handle such strong gravitational forces, and the riders experienced whiplash and neck injuries. Worse, some even fell out of the cart. Not a very fun roller coaster experience, to say the least.
Scientists and engineers then realized that using an oval or upsidedown teardrop shape for the loop, which debuted on the Loop the Loop and is used today, resolves this issue, since the curvature changes along the loop and doesnโt interfere with the acceleration.

Embrace your emotions, rewrite your story, change your presence, and cultivate true resilience.
One day at an informal gathering of colleagues, a friend explained what it means to be mentally healthy: โMental well-being is about feeling our feelings when we feel them, and then talking about them honestly.โ
This notion sounds deceptively simple, but its actual implementation is remarkably intricate. The ability to feel and understand the full range of emotions, which is a big part of a โhealthy mindโ, is easier said than done. For most of us, it becomes a lifelong journey of gradual selfdiscovery.
Our minds, often seeking to shield us from discomfort, have a tendency to avoid confronting our emotions, particularly when they are intense or negative. We may suppress our emotions or pretend that we donโt feel them in order to shield ourselves from harsh truths. However, this can only make things worse in the long run. Acknowledging our emotions and allowing ourselves to fully embrace them is crucial.
It starts when weโre young. Imagine being a young child brimming with affection for your parents, only to realize that your love isnโt reciprocated. It may seem simpler to internalize this as a personal flaw rather than accept that our parents may have faltered. Similarly, our
spousesโ neglectful actions might trigger emotions like anger. Yet, instead of allowing ourselves to experience this anger, we suppress it because we believe โitโs wrong to get angryโ.
Occasionally, we encounter heart-wrenching conclusions about our relationships, yet we remain oblivious to these emotional wounds due to a self-imposed commitment to avoid feeling bad. All these encounters gradually nudge us further away from our genuine emotions.
Societal norms and perceptions about emotions further shape our responses, often from a young age. A stern admonishment of โdonโt act like a babyโ or a dismissive โa good child shouldnโt complainโ can inhibit the authentic
Our minds, often seeking to shield us from discomfort, have a tendency to avoid confronting our emotions, particularly when they are intense or negative.
You do research when you are buying a refrigerator or a car. You do the research when you choose a neighborhood and a home. You do the research when you choose your childโs school. Why do research? Because these are important decisions, some costly and some life impacting.
In other words: You check things thoroughly before making a significant decision. After all itโs your money and your life thatโs being impacted. When deciding on an educational program consider the following(carefully):
โข Explore the quality of the program, the integrity of the people behind it, the credibility of the credentials you will earn.
โข Find out if the degree or certificate will open the doors to future opportunities.
โข Will you walk away having acquired both skills and knowledge in your chosen field?
โข Will you save money now only to have it cost you down the line in earning power?
โข Will you save time and regret it later because the quality wasnโt there?
Some people just want a โpiece of paperโ, thinking that they can always โlearn on the jobโ.
Other people want to learn as much as they can in their chosen field so that they can be the best they can be at what they do. They want to be able to do the most good for those they will be servicing. They want ehrlichkeit - integrity. They want to know that they have the tools to make a kiddush Hashem in the workplace and wherever they go. And thatโs what we mean when we say โDo it quick! Do it right!โ
Itโs an important decision. Do your research and choose carefully. You owe it to yourself and your future.
expression of our feelings.
People consider it โnormalโ not to grieve past events, feel strong emotions, or have mixed feelings about our loved ones. Keeping up with this idea of normal can lead to problems. We might end up feeling less creative or enthusiastic, or even fall into paranoia, despair, chronic anxiety, or physical illness.
True mental well-being necessitates a commitment to embracing and articulating our authentic emotions. It also requires us to revisit the past and acknowledge emotions that might have been suppressed or overlooked. While this process may be challenging, it is crucial for both personal healing and growth. Suppressed emotions do not fade away; instead, they linger and intensify over time.
Emotional well-being thrives in authenticity. That means being honest with ourselves about our thoughts and feelings. It also means being true to our values and beliefs. While being authentic can be challenging, it is essential for our mental and emotional health. When we are authentic, we are less likely to feel stressed or anxious. We are also more likely to feel connected to others and to have a sense of purpose in life. Authenticity is a journey, not a destination. It is something that we work on throughout our lives. However, the rewards of being authentic are worth the effort. When we are authentic, we are more likely to be happy, healthy, and fulfilled.
A stern admonishment of โdonโt act like a babyโ or a dismissive โgood children shouldnโt complainโ can inhibit the authentic expression of our feelings.
Ribbono Shel Olam ืืืจื ืืืืฉื ืืื. Watch and see what an electrifying effect this Refuah Campaign has generated. Women worldwide, from all walks of life, want to take part in this campaign for the sake of Cholei Yisroel. Nobody wants to be left out! It's incredibly heartwarming to hear how courages, how brave our dear sisters are, stepping out of their comfort zone to awaken Rachamei Shomayim and bring an end to this frightening Machala.
It was inspiring beyond to hear from you all, our sisters from Montreal, Boro Park, Williamsburg, and many others who shared how totally unaccepted it is in their community to present themselves without a sheitel. But you just did it! You are the Nachshon in our Dor! You even went to work without your sheitel. Can you fathom how far your actions went? Like Mindy said, "your literally giving life to Cholei Yisroel".
To the special women from Lakewood we gained insurmountable chizuk, when you shared that you went with your children to the park on shabbos morning in your snood, though it's typically not the norm. Wow!
Our sisters up in the country attending a Shabbos Nachamu Kiddush. The woman that gave her Shabbos shiur, or the ladies shopping in the local malls, you were all battling with your Yetzer Horah, yet nevertheless you chose to stay strong, so that you can alleviate the bitter pain for cholei Yisroel.
Yes! By you winning the battle with your yetzer horah, you gave koach to Cholei Yisroel to win the battle of their machala. How beautiful it was to hear from a few listeners that they went to a simcha with their bandanas and changed to their sheitel only in the hall. By doing so, they expressed their great sensitivity to men, helping them with their Shmiras Eineim, and thereby spreading kedusha in this world. Kedusha brings Shechinah, and Shechinah brings about shemirah, brachos, and refuohs.
Dear sisters, let's continue to minimize our sheitel wear whenever we possibly can. Especially, when in the presence of men.
Let's strengthen each other by influencing as many women as we can to join this campaign.
True, its not easy, however, let Mindy's heartbreaking words reiterate "I know it's hard but the Machala is harder". Just like many women were saying "it really did not seem realistic at all, but I did not think. I jump into this campaign for the sake of helping another Yid".
In this Zechus of going above and beyond with true Mesirah Nefesh may Hashem sent an abundance of ืชืืืืคืจ and ืฉืื ืืืจืงื ืขืืื ืืจืื ืืืขืื ืชืืขืืฉื.

There are a handful of staples at every carnival and fair, like the Ferris wheel and merry-go-round. But perhaps none holds the interest of the crowd as much as the iconic bumper cars. The reason is simple: You get to drive! Even if youโre just ten years old!
Interestingly, the initial bumper cars were not actually supposed to collide with each other. The whole point of bumper cars, invented in the early 1920s, was to avoid impact (the original name was โDodgemโ). In fact, in one Russian version of bumper cars for adults, collisions were penalized by an immediate cessation of the ride. Instead, the thrill came from trying oneโs hardest to avoid bashing into other bumper cars, even as your car careened around in crazy and unpredictable patterns thanks to intentionally unreliable steering.
Often, the cars needed to be nailed back together at the end of every day after the ride had closed.
At other times, pieces (and sometimes occupants) would go flying after a collision. And, after the very first season, all of the Dodgem cars were so far beyond repair that they were summarily burned. The carsโ flimsiness was due primarily to the fact that they were constructed out of tin, which is not a strong or durable metal.
While they came with steering wheels, one review of the cars described the steering as โrelative,โ meaning that the car only went vaguely in the direction it was guided. Sounds like fun!
As the creators of the ride anticipated, people loved the wild rides and did not mind being thrown about the arena with little sense of where they would end up. It was all part of the fun.
Initial reviews of the Dodgem bumper cars were less than stellar. The magazine Scientific American even described the cars as generally โunmanageable.โ Despite these sour notes, the crowds lining up to use the new bumper cars for adults and kids showed usersโ true feelings about the innovation.
For example, despite doubling the price of each ride (from 15 to 30 cents) during the rideโs debut summer at Salisbury Beach, MA, in 1920, the ride operators reported crowds of 40 or 50 people waiting to take their turn. Follow the crowd!
The Stoehrer brothers (first patent filed in 1920) were inspired to create bumper cars after they observed a traffic jam in their hometown. They thought it would be fun to create a car that could โbumpโ into others without causing any damage. So something good can come out of traffic, then!
While it may not sound fast, bumper cars can reach speeds of up to 10 miles per hour. Thatโs enough to provide a thrilling ride while still being safe for riders of all ages.
Bumper cars have been used by scientists to study collisions and the effects of impact on the human body. Not what I would have expected at an amusement park!
Believe it or not, there are bumper car competitions held around the world. These competitions feature skilled drivers who perform tricks and stunts in their bumper cars, showcasing their agility and control.
The fastest bumper car achieved a top speed of 161.476 km/h (100.336 mph) and was built by Colin Furze of the United Kingdom.
was achieved by Manuela Benus and Jan Spekker of Germany, who drove for 28 hours.

The classic work by the Chassidic master Rabbi Levi Yitzchak of Berditchev translated and elucidated
One the greatest classic Chassidic commenatries on Chumash, Kedushas Levi, is finally available in a translated and elucidated edition.
Rav Levi Yitzchok of Berditchev is renowned as the defender and lover of the Jewish people, but he was so much more. He was a brilliant Torah scholar, one of the earliest Chassidic masters, and the author of this major commentary on the Torah.
Kedushas Levi has been treasured and studied for more than two centuries. Now, this magnificent edition brings Kedushas Levi to English readers in all its grandeur.
Rabbi Raphael Pelcovitzโs highly acclaimed translation and annotation of the Sfornoโs commentary on Chumash is now available in a reformatted edition, with the complete Hebrew text of Sforno included. This translation of Sforno is unrivaled, opening this classic commentary to the English reader.
