It needs to be perfectly white, but not too stark white. Not too long and not too short. Classy and simple, with some style and flair. Easy to tie but it should look tied. It should not slide o easily and stay put. It should be on trend but not something I need to replace next year. Nice enough for shul on Rosh Hashana and nice enough for a Shabbos sheva brachos. Crease-free with that perfect fold. Something I should want to wear every Friday night and not only a few times a year.

“Challenge” is a word that people aren’t usually so happy to hear, It often comes together with feelings of anger and fear. But these people sometimes miss the point, It’s really a gift!
As we learnt from Moishy In Mrs. Honig’s class. All it takes is perseverance and acceptance to pass. She taught us how to “cope with it instead of fight”. And then we could reach tremendous heights.
May ה ” בקה grant us all אימשד התעייס and חכ you’ll see, And He should help us to be the best person we could be! Don’t forget-smooth seas don’t make skillful sailors!

1 cup sugar
1 cup Lieber’s honey
1 teaspoon Lieber’s baking powder
1 teaspoon Lieber’s baking soda
1 teaspoon Lieber’s pure vanilla extract
1/2 teaspoon Lieber’s sea salt
2 teaspoons Lieber’s cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon Lieber’s ground nutmeg
2 1/2 cups flour
1 cup Goldbaum’s original oat bliss
HoneyGlaze:
1 cup powdered sugar
1 Tablespoon Lieber’s honey
1/2 teaspoon Lieber’s pure vanilla extract
2 teaspoons Goldbaum’s original oat bliss
Instructions
Preheat oven to 350˚. Grease a bundt pan with Lieber’s baking spray with flour; set aside.
In a large mixing bowl, add all ingredients aside from flour and milk. Whisk to combine.
Add half of the flour, followed by half of the oat milk, then the remaining flour and remaining oat milk. Whisk well after each addition. Pour batter into prepared bundt pan. Bake for about 45 minutes, until cooked through.

AN AMAZING DETAIL
(Re: Another Kind of Diamond, Issue 412)
Thank you for your outstanding publication.
I appreciated the article about Tosfos Shabbos. R’ Shaul Katz is doing something great for kids with this contest.
I’d like to add a detail to the story he told about the wealthy businessman from Mexico who let a deal go on Erev Shabbos although he wasn’t religious, and later saw great success. I heard that after receiving such a clear sign from Above he decided to become fully observant, found a chavrusa and joined a kollel. He told this story at his first siyum masechta
Thanks again,
LET ME INTRODUCE MYSELF
(Re:Your Internal Intelligence, Issue 412)
(235-8362) • 1-732-513-2330
I really enjoyed the article about the different kinds of intelligence!
I was literally beaming as I read the description of the intelligence I have, self-smart intelligence. I’ve never seen such a clear description of myself. It was
super validating. I’m glad to know there are more people who are so tuned in to themselves.
I’d love to meet you. But for now, I’ll just wish my fellow friends happy journaling!
Chumy S.(Re: Rising Stars, Issue 412)
I read The Monsey View from cover to cover every week. The article about child prodigies was fascinating. But I was disappointed not to see any frum prodigies featured. Many of our gedolim were known as iluyim already from childhood, and it would have been so much more inspirational to hear about them. (Of course, many of our gedolim were not born iluyim, and it would be tremendously inspirational and give us a lot of chizuk to learn more about them and how they achieved everything they did, as well.)
Thank you,
Chaim SpiraYOU COLORED MY WORLD
(Re: DIY Paint Party, Issue 411)
I have such gratitude to Hashem, and to The Monsey View as His shaliach, for the opportunity to continue doing things I enjoy. I followed your DIY painting instructions using paper, pencils and crayons, and had a wonderful time. I hope to try it with paint in the future. Thank you Chava Schwartz for helping me keep busy, relaxed, and focused for a couple of hours in my own daled amos by myself in my old age, and especially for the feeling of satisfaction every morning when I looked at my work from the previous day.

September is named National Papaya Month in America, but the delicious papaya fruit is actually not seasonal. It is available all year round. (Note that even though it is a fruit, the brachah on papaya is hoadamah.)
Ripe papaya is very tasty. It has a flavor that reminds you of cantaloupe. Papaya can be used in fruit salads and smoothies. When the peel is yellow, the fruit is ripe. If the peel is still green, the fruit inside will be hard and tasteless.

Papaya is rich in nutrients. It has lots of Vitamin C. One small papaya has 300% of The daily value. Papaya is also rich in Vitamins A, B, E, and K. It also contains fiber, as well as the important minerals potassium, magnesium, copper, and calcium. Papaya is a good source of antioxidants, such as lycopene and carotenoids.
The greatest health benefit of papaya is that it can help with a range of stomach issues, such as gas, bloating, and abdominal burning. That’s because papaya contains the enzyme papain. The enzymes in papaya allow the body to assimilate all of the nutrients in it better than any other fruit or vegetable.

Today, you can get papaya supplements that are Great for heartburn. You should try them before you turn to Tums. Tums contain a weakened calcium called calcium carbonate, and too much calcium carbonate can lead to kidney stones.
In addition to the health benefits offered by papaya’s enzyme papain, this enzyme also softens hard meat by breaking down the collagen that stiffens it. Here are instructions on how to take advantage of papaya when cooking your meat for Yom Tov, as per a meat expert.
Take an unripe papaya, the greener the better because that’s when it has the most papain.

Wash the papaya well with the peels. And cut it into chunks.
Blend the chunks in a blender with a bit of added water.
Spread the blended papaya on your meat and let it sit for 20 minutes. It will come out deliciously soft after you cook it.

I just wanted to let you know how happy I was to see summer topics featured in the last few issues. It really stresses me out when people cut the summer short by starting to shop for school or winter, or when the stores start advertising their winter lines, long before vacation is over. I’m glad to see that the summer is not over at The Monsey View! Wish I Was Still in the Country

It was interesting for me to read about a family minhag offering “cholent nosh,” although I wouldn’t call it a minhag, more like a good motivation. My husband started something similar in our family, a “zemiros nosh.” (When we went to the country in the summer, he added a “shul nosh” too.) With our large family of boys, we now have beautiful zemiros with happy singers eagerly awaiting their well deserved surprise! By now they all really love the zemiros, while we enjoy the kids sitting around the table. And yes, my married son continued this “minhag ” in his own family!

The papaya plant contains three parts that all hold beneficial nutrients. There is the flesh of the fruit, of course, but the seeds are also edible – they have a peppery taste – as well as the leaves are also loaded with nutrients. Studies have shown that papaya leaves are good for raising the level of platelets in the blood.

To your health,
When I read your article about Shabbos table solutions, I marveled at the commitment and creativity of Yiddishe parents who spend all their kochos thinking of the best ways to be mechanech their children. I was surprised to see the letters objecting to the ideas presented. Of course everyone should follow their own minhagim. The point was just to think out of the box and tweak what you’re doing to make it as effective as possible. I really respect and admire the parents who are raising their children today. Although there are so many forces against us, they never stop their efforts to raise Yiddishe kinderlach in the Yiddishe way.

The parsha begins, “Atem nitzavim hayom kulchem” — you are all standing this day (Devarim 29:9). The pasuk continues by delineating all kinds of people — your elders, your young children, your women, your converts.
“Kulchem” includes everyone. Why is it necessary to specify each category separately? Moreover, all other times when Klal Yisroel gathered, the Torah suffices by referring to all of Klal Yisroel as a group, without specifying everyone individually. What’s different here?
IT WAS THURSDAY EVENING. Reb Yitzchok Nemes was taking his weekly train ride to Mr. Tenker’s home. In his hand he carried a heavy bag, full of individually wrapped meals. He was filled with a sense of purpose: he was helping another Yid keep kosher.
It was already several months since Reb Yitzchok had managed to convince his acquaintance, Mr. Tenker, to accept the kosher meals. Week in, week out, Reb Yitzchok would purchase seven frozen dinner portions at $1.50 each and drop them off at Mr. Tenker’s home. Mr. Tenker would be set for the week; all he had to do was warm up one meal every night.
The round trip took several hours, but Reb Yitzchok was not fazed. With unbelievable determination, he would faithfully shop for the meals, catch a train, deliver the food, and take a train back home. He would have stocked up Mr. Tenker’s freezer with more at once so he wouldn’t have to travel every single week, but he could not afford more than $10.50 at a time.
After about a year and a half of weekly delivery trips, Reb Yitzchok was once speaking with Mr. Tenker about an unrelated topic. At one point, Mr. Tenker blurted out, “It’s all
right. You can stop with the deliveries. The food is salty and not tasty enough.”
Immediately realizing how hurtful the comment was, Mr. Tenker clapped his hand to his mouth. But it was too late.
“What’s the problem?” Reb Yitzchok asked. “You don’t enjoy the meals I bring you?”
There were a couple of moments of silence as Mr. Tenker hesitated. Then he whispered, “I give them to my dog…”
Imagine Reb Yitzchok’s feelings!
After all the sacrifice to help another Yid eat kosher — the money, the time, the train rides — the Yid had not been eating kosher after all. The sense of purpose and exhilaration that had given him the energy to persevere was gone.
Could it be that his mesiras nefesh had been for nothing?
Two years passed. One Thursday afternoon, Mrs. Nemes received a phone call from an organization that was arranging a Shabbaton for university students. “Could you host a student from the University of Pennsylvania?”
Mrs. Nemes agreed, and the following afternoon, her doorbell rang. A young student stood there, his knapsack slung over his shoulder.
The Nemeses welcomed him inside and showed him to the dining room table, where some food was already prepared. “Come, have a taste of our Shabbos food,” Mrs. Nemes offered as she placed a plate of fish in front of him.
The boy sat politely, but did not eat. “Perhaps you don’t like fish,” Mrs. Nemes said. “Can I give you something else?”
But the boy replied that he actually did like fish. “It’s just that… I don’t know if I should be eating here. You’re probably thinking that I’m here because I want to learn more about religion, but that’s not the case.”
“If so, why did you come?”
“Well,” the boy began, “The reason I decided to join the Shabbaton is because my grandfather once told me that several years ago, there was a Jew who lived in this neighborhood who went out of his way to deliver kosher meals to him every week.
“I was so impressed by this story. It’s amazing to me that a Jew should be ready to give of himself and his time and money so that another Jew in a faraway neighborhood could keep kosher! When I saw the flyer announcing a Shabbaton in this area, I decided to come check out the people in this place,” he said. “But I have zero intention of becoming like them,” he emphasized.
The shock on Mrs. Nemes’ face was apparent. “Is your grandfather’s name Tenker, by any chance?”
“Yes! How did you know?”
“How do I know?” Mrs. Nemes echoed. “It was none other than my husband who traveled every week to deliver the kosher food to your grandfather!”
There was a spark of energy. A circuit closed.
And the spark did not die. Transfixed by the obvious hashgacha, the boy enjoyed his Shabbos with the Nemeses, and even chose to stay on. Soon, the university student was a full-fledged yeshivah student.
Our efforts never go to waste, even if we don’t see it at the moment. Actions that begin with good intentions will ultimately bring good.
The Ohr Hachaim Hakadosh explains: This gathering of Klal Yisroel was different than all other gatherings. Here, Hashem wanted every single Yid to be sworn in as a guarantor for his fellow Yidden. The goal was to make every Yid feel a sense of responsibility to another, to be aware of the obligation to do whatever he can so that another Yid may lead a Torah-true life. May we indeed be zoche.
Shuey Scheiner loves to share. He lets his brothers and sister use his tool set, his crayons, and his big-boy bike. But there’s one thing Shuey will not share: his blanket WUZZY...
After all the sacrifice to help another Yid eat kosher — the money, the time, the train rides — the Yid had not been eating kosher after all
There’s always an anxiety about paint jobs, somehow. The construction is complete, the house is perfect, just perfect, and the design you agonized over for months has come to life. But actually painting feels like taking a risk. It’s so easy to make a mess of a paint job. You’ve heard the stories: Paint spilled on expensive tiles or custom kitchen counters; walls painted when the plaster is uneven; painting with the wrong finish, making high-traffic areas difficult to clean. Mistakes on the moldings, pinks a shade too bright and neutrals nightmarishly drab. Or just plain old sloppy paint jobs that ruin the carefully curated décor.
You need a painter with the artistic abilities to come through on the colors of your dream home or the perfect finish of the decks of your new development, but you also need painters with the reliability factor. After all, who are you trusting with that everdripping can of paint?
Over the past two and a half years, Peacock Painters has earned the trust of a growing client base of developers and homeowners all over the area. At Peacock, it’s not just about slathering paint on walls with a roller. It’s about enhancing your space and readying it for its role, whether it’s a large project or an individual home. As aesthetics evolve and tastes become more refined, painters brainstorm with designers to suggest colors, and create strip lines and accent walls, as well as painting intricate moldings.
YOEL SHIA CZIMENT, the pleasant yungerman behind Peacock, is a home-grown talent, second-generation born and bred in the heart of Monsey. He has a feel for the community he serves, and his stylistic knowledge and know-how have grown with Monsey’s expansion. Watching families from all over come to Rockland County and make Monsey their home, he has seen tastes evolve and upgrade, and he has experience bringing visions to life, from the most classic to cutting edge.
Yoel Shia directs crews who apply the chosen paints with precision and professionalism. His teams are flexible and hardworking, and on any given day, up to ten painting crews, each led by a highly-skilled foreman, work on site in Monsey, Spring Valley, and around New Jersey. Some also take on projects upstate.
Since his business model divides the work among crews, Yoel Shia can take on multiple projects at once, so his clients do not hang around for weeks waiting for their paint job. This suits his character. “People ask me how I cope when the jobs become stressful. The answer is that I cope by taking on more jobs, then the earlier ones become easier in comparison to the new load,” he quips.
Yoel Shia started out by painting porches. He maintains a division of his company that works only on exteriors, specializing in porches and decks, offering a full-service makeover including staining, painting, and power-washing.
REMEMBER BEING THAT CHILD, sitting on the stoop, transfixed by the scene of a painter applying coats of color to transform a wall or door? What is it that is so attractive, almost mesmerizing, about watching a skilled painter?
Aside from the intrinsic rhythm and craftsmanship, there’s a certain calm about the way Peacock Painters approach their work. “I got a call from a school bus driver whose route goes past one of the new developments we’re painting,” Yoel Shia says. “He told me, ‘Every morning I stop my bus to see how you guys are working so geshmak and so calmly as they paint the decks, getting the job done methodically and perfectly. It gives me a push the entire day.”
Most people are surprised by how many colors there actually are in a paint store. While starting out in business, Yoel Shia spent a year observing, visiting local paint stores and chat-
ting with professionals, getting to know what he describes as a “world of color.” Sometimes, he spends 45 minutes with the paint experts at Benjamin Moore, till they hit on the exact palette for a deck or home. “There are some super-popular choices, like Super White, Chantilly Lace, or Windsbreath, and for those who want really high-quality, totally washable, there is the COFAX range. Recently I’m seeing a trend where clients pick one color, and use it in different finishes, with the ceiling matte, the moldings satin, and the walls eggshell.” Then there are the people who say, “I want exactly what my brother-in-law did.” With his experienced eye, Yoel Shia can look at the paint and figure out exactly what color, gloss, and product was used.
First, Yoel Shia sits down with each client for a consultation. The three key questions are what quality paint they are looking for, what color, and which finish. “There is good quality paint, and then there is very good quality paint. If it’s for a commercial rental, standard paint might be the right choice, but if you have children around, you might want something higher quality.”
Some professionals radiate an attitude of “I know what I’m doing, just leave me to it.” But Yoel Shia has the patience to answer umpteen questions. “I speak nicely, I don’t shout, I explain the options very clearly, and I’m very open if a client wants to change something.”
And just one final thing: Peacock Painters always comes back. “After a job, I come back and do any touch ups the client wants, make sure the base moldings are completely clean, and fix anything that’s been bothering them since the painters left.”
Perhaps that’s why he’s getting calls from as far abroad as Eretz Yisrael. “We’re moving to Monsey, can we book a Peacock paint job?”
ASIDE FROM THE INTRINSIC RHYTHM AND CRAFTSMANSHIP, THERE’S A CERTAIN CALM ABOUT THE WAY PEACOCK PAINTERS APPROACH THEIR WORK

It’s that time of year. The doors of the ezras nashim swing wide open to welcome dozens or hundreds of women and girls seeking to spend several hours of tefillah and closeness to the Ribbono Shel Olam. For many, the Yamim Noraim are one of the few opportunities all year to daven b’tzibbur.
Inside the shul, the atmosphere is solemn and pure. Everyone is engrossed in the timeless words of the machzor, listening to the empowering voice of the ba’al tefillah and following along.
Some women are swaying, some are dabbing their eyes… and some feel as if they’re standing on the sidelines.
There are so many nuances of life in shul that are second nature even to young boys who spend many hours there, but may seem confusing or foreign to girls and women who are hardly ever there. What am I supposed to be doing/saying now? Should I sit or stand? Say the entire piece or stop and wait for the chazzan? Am I allowed to talk?
In this three-part series, we offer you an overview and guide to the tefillos, so you’ll be prepared and confident in your ability to follow and participate as you take your seat in this holy place on these holy days.
After everyone finishes davening Shemoneh Esrei quietly, the shaliach tzibbur — or sha”tz, for short — repeats it aloud. The reason Chazal originally established this takanah was to help those who could not read or retain the words of Shemoneh Esrei as composed by the Anshei Knesses Hagedolah. (Long before the printing press, there were few sefarim or siddurim, and not everybody learned to read.) We continue to say the chazaras hashatz today, even though we can all read from our own siddurim
Davening with a crowd has an amazing benefit. Our tefillos join into a powerful unit and ascend directly to the Kisei Hakavod. Listening to the shaliach tzibbur as he repeats the words of Shemoneh Esrei places our tefillah on that direct path.
Q: During chazaras hashatz, am I allowed to make up parts of tefillah that I missed?
According to the Shulchan Aruch, there must be at least nine men listening intently to the ba’al tefillah; otherwise, he may be saying a brachah l’vatalah. Every person must view himself as part of that core minyan — even if there are hundreds of other mispallelim
We are therefore advised not to catch up on our davening, learn, or say Tehillim at this time, which applies to women also. It is certainly forbidden to speak idle talk. The poskim use very harsh language about people who speak during chazaras hashatz.
As the shul in the town of Belz, Galicia, was being built, the Sar Shalom of Belz, zy”a, supervised every step. To the Rebbe, building a house for Hashem was such a significant undertaking that he invested personal attention and effort into every single detail. Finally, the building was nearing completion. The chassidim looked forward to the chanukas habayis, the culmination of the toil and commencement of a bastion of Torah and chassidus
But the Sar Shalom was not ready. “Before the ezras nashim is ready, we will not enter. We need the tefillos and tears of the women if we want ours to ascend!”
The shul is our place. We belong within its hallowed walls — even if we may not frequent it as often as the men.
1. Which perek of Tehillim is recited 100 times a year?
2. Which tefillah has the word “baruch” in it 13 times?
Answers:
1. Tehillim 27, L’Dovid Hashem
2. Baruch She’amar
One highlight of tefillah b’tzibbur is Kaddish. As its name denotes, Kaddish means heilig — holy. Saying Kaddish brings kedushah to Hashem’s Name. When we answer amen, we also acquire this heiligkeit
In Kaddish, we praise Hashem and describe His glory, and also ask for shalom, geulah, long life, and shefa. The climax is when the tzibbur cries, “Amen, yehei Shemei rabbah l’alam u’le’olmei olmaya.” These words are an opportunity for us to bring about an immeasurable degree of kedushah.
We say Kaddish at the end of certain sections of davening. There are some points where it is said by the ba’al tefillah and other points where men who have lost a parent recite Kaddish Yasom as an aliyas neshamah for the niftar.
There is a machlokes whether one must stand or not. The Mishnah Berurah rules that if one is already standing, he must remain standing, but it isn’t necessary to stand up specifically.
Different shuls follow different minhagim, so follow the minhag in your shul.
It is proper to stop what you are doing, listen, and answer amen. One should not walk out of shul in the middle of Kaddish, but wait until it is over before leaving. Whenever you hear Kaddish, even if you are not davening with that minyan, you should pause and participate.
During chazaras hashatz, in the third brachah of Shemoneh Esrei, we say Kedushah. It is a tefillah expressing our longing for Hashem’s holiness, and we say it pasuk by pasuk, first the mispallelim and then the chazzan. During Shacharis and Minchah, Kedushah begins with the word “nakdishach,” and in Mussaf, it begins with “kesser.” There is no Kedushah in Maariv.
In Kedushah, we emulate the way the malachim praise Hashem — standing upright, feet together, we say the same pesukim they say. We are literally singing the songs of Shamayim!
Saying the pesukim of Kedushah along with the tzibbur is so significant that we must stop whatever we are saying to participate — even if we are in the middle of Shema or our personal Shemoneh Esrei. If one is at those points and cannot speak, one should at least stop and think the words in their head.
When we say Kedushah, the malachim hurry to join us. This brings about the ultimate kiddush Hashem, as both worlds are linked together in praise of Hakadosh Baruch Hu.
The Arizal writes that we should rejoice while saying kesser, focusing on the great elevation that happens through our words. At these very moments, the malachim are actually crowning Hashem!
Q: I see women doing all sorts of motions during Kedushah. Must I stand on my toes, bow, or cover my eyes when saying the pasuk of Shema?
The minhag is to raise our heels at each word while reciting, “Kadosh, kadosh, kadosh,” showing that we are lifting ourselves upward toward Shamayim. We should lift our heels once when saying, “Baruch kevod Hashem mimkomo,” and “Yimloch Hashem l’olam,” as well.
Other movements are unnecessary and generally a result of lack of knowledge.
Do come as punctually as you can, to avoid issues with catching up missed tefillos
Do review the machzor with your mother, father, or teacher before Yom Tov to familiarize yourself with the tefillos
Don’t socialize in shul. Bask in the uplifting atmosphere in shul, and leave the schmoozing for outside.
Don’t be ashamed to look at your neighbor’s machzor. She’ll be happy to help you find the place!
Moshe Rabbeinu established that we should read from the Torah three times a week — on Mondays, Thursdays, and Shabbos — so that three days would not pass without Torah. The Torah is compared to water, and just as water keeps a person alive and vibrant, constant involvement in Torah keeps us spiritually connected.
The Torah is brought from the aron kodesh to the bimah where the ba’al korei reads it aloud, following special trop. On Shabbos, there are (at least) seven aliyos, where a brachah is made on the Torah before and after each portion is read. Everyone answers, “Baruch Hashem Hamevorach l’olam va’ed.” On Yom Tov, there are five aliyos, and on Yom Kippur, there are six.
The ba’al korei, leining from the bimah, which is specifically placed in the center of shul, reminds us of Mattan Torah, where all of Klal Yisroel stood around Har Sinai to accept the Torah. It is a privilege to take part!
The Shulchan Aruch writes that it is proper to focus and pay attention to the words of the ba’al korei.
It is forbidden to speak during Krias HaTorah. If one is in the middle of davening Shemoneh Esrei, he does not need to stop to listen to the leining, but one should not catch up on any other tefillos as the ba’al korei leins. Between aliyos, it is okay to daven or say Tehillim.
If a girl finds it difficult to follow along or sit quietly, she may step outside and return to shul after Krias HaTorah. However, she should make sure to leave between aliyos, as one may not leave shul while the Torah is being read.

Due to a faulty bolt, 85,850 high chairs are being recalled, with 24 falls reported and 11 children sustaining minor injuries.
The Consumer Products Safety Commission issued the recall on the popular Boon high chairs on August 31, saying that it had received 34 separate reports of the chair’s seat separating from the base. The recall affects Boon Flair highchairs manufactured before September 2016 and all Boon Flair Elite highchairs, sold in a variety of colors for anywhere from $230 to $380, both in the United States and in Canada. Parents can find the model number on a label located under the high chair’s base.
Affected models include the Flair Elite B751 and Flair B701–B704, B706–B709, B716-B718, B731, B10147, B11068, B11069 and B11401. Parents are advised to stop using the highchairs immediately and to contact the manufacturer, TOMY, by calling 866-725-4407 for a free repair kit.
Just days before the official start of the new school year, the East Ramapo Central School District voted to join six other local school districts in an innovative initiative to keep young riders safer than ever.
The Rockland County School Bus Safety Program has been installing cameras on school bus stop arms in order to catch drivers as they illegally pass buses whose red caution lights are flashing. Described as a “violator-funded business model,” the free camera program is being run in partnership by Rockland County and BusPatrol, a technology company that promotes school bus safety.
Approximately 50,000 drivers illegally pass stopped school buses every day in New York.
Pearl River, Nanuet, North Rockland, Clarkstown, Suffern and Nyack had all enrolled in the Rockland County School Bus Safety program as of mid-August, with 111 tickets issued over a six week period. East Ramapo signed up last week, with the South Orangetown school district expected to follow suit,
much to the relief of County Executive Ed Day, who had urged districts schoolwide to jump on board.
“This is a completely free program that, without a doubt, will protect children from being killed,” said Day.
Rockland’s safety program will be issuing tickets to drivers who are caught on camera violating the law, with tickets coming in at $250 for a first violation over an 18 month period, $275 for the second offense and $300 for the third.
“We are happy and proud to approve this resolution that will increase the safety of the students in our district,” East Ramapo school board president Shimmy Rose told Rockland Daily
It is unclear at this time when East Ramapo buses will be outfitted with the stop arm cameras, with installation contingent upon availability.

The dolls are supplied by Girl Again, a subsidiary of Yes She Can, a nonprofit helping young women with autism develop life skills by teaching them retail, marketing and merchandising skills at its American Girl resale shop in White Plains.
A ribbon-cutting ceremony on August 29 marked the dolls’ arrival into Independence Café’s inventory, with officials from both Rockland and Westchester on hand to mark the occasion, reported Rockland County Business Journal. More than two dozen dolls were on display in the store’s windows, with prices ranging from $50 to $100, a significant savings over the cost of new American Girl dolls, which retail at $60 to $300. American Girl accessories sell for a dollar and up at Independence Café, with 20% of the earnings going to BRIDGES, a Rockland-based nonprofit that operates the boutique.
Located on the second floor of the Palisades Mall, Independence Café provides a space for a BRIDGES-Yes She Can collaboration, both of which provide opportunities for those with learning disabilities.
“We can do more when we work together than when we work alone,” said BRIDGES executive director Carlos Martinez. “I’m a big believer in partnerships. It brings organizations together. It can often be a powerful way to reach the community and accomplish goals.”

Riva connects with Shuli after Shuli is cruelly and publicly reprimanded by their boss. Lani gets a breakfast order through Riva — and concern from Gittel Indig.
Riva’s “that’s it, I’ve had it” moment came on Friday afternoon.
She was trying to get the house in shape before the kids came home from school. Maddie was excellent at cleaning, but when it came to organizing, forget it, the woman simply didn’t bother trying. In a way, Riva didn’t mind. Maddie would leave her a pile of “stuff” in a corner of each room, and Riva would go from room to room putting all that random stuff away where it belonged.
She was sorting assorted game pieces into their correct boxes when Fraidy shuffled into the house. One look at her daughter — sagging shoulders, blotchy red eyes, quiet sniffles — and something in Riva snapped.
That’s it. I’ve had it.
Fraidy couldn’t describe what exactly
had happened in school — something about a seat, girls passing notes through her desk, a look from Chevi, some words muttered in a way that she couldn’t even hear them. Riva didn’t even care what it had been. She knew too well how innocent-sounding words delivered in dulcet tones, or a simple look, could dig deeper into a heart than a full-blown tirade.
“I’m calling your principal,” she stated.
“B-b-but what are you going to t-t-tell her? Chevi d-d-didn’t do anything.”
“Leave it to me.”
Riva took her cellphone out to the porch and closed the door. She only had the English principal’s number, but she knew Mrs. Becker was in on the situation, and she felt comfortable talking to her.
Mrs. Becker answered right away.

“Hi, it’s Riva Stroh, Fraidy’s mother. I’m so sorry for bothering you on Erev Shabbos, but this is important.”
“That’s okay, I have time now. What’s going on?”
The principal listened as Riva described what had been going on between Fraidy and Chevi. She tried sharing examples of incidents, and she hoped Mrs. Becker would grasp the nature of the problem.
“I see. I get it,” Mrs. Becker said, and Riva could only hope she really did. “The truth is, I discussed this with Mrs. Shiffer and Miss Katz a number of times, and I think I have a pretty clear picture of what’s going on. I thought things got better for a while, but now you’re telling me this…”
“I know, I also thought it got better.”
“We need to handle this carefully, it’s so easy to mess up. Let me think about this.”
Riva’s fingers trembled slightly as she hung up the phone. She’d done what had to be done, no matter how uncomfortable she felt about it.
And when she found Fraidy lying on her bed again, the guilt she felt for tattling on her niece faded, quickly replaced by firm anger.
However carefully the principal chose to proceed, Riva hoped she would do her thinking really fast.
Lani could not even count the amount of times she’d regretted giving up Maddie. Basically, daily.
She couldn’t even answer herself honestly if it was a money thing or an ego thing that kept her from going back on her decision. Small basement apartments still needed to be cleaned; if anything, they got dirty more often than a spacious house. And if Maddie wasn’t doing it, she had no choice but to roll up her own sleeves.
She heard the phone ringing while she was bent over the bathtub with a scrub brush. Whoever it was, she couldn’t

answer now. But then Shana brought her the cordless. “It’s for you,” she said. There was a note of curious suspicion in her voice.
Lani sandwiched the phone between her shoulder and her ear.
“Hello?”
“Hi, Mrs. Eisdorf, this is Mrs. Becker from Bnos Rivka.”
The English principal! Lani stood up quickly, throwing a questioning look at Shana. “Uh, hi, Mrs. Becker, ah gutten Erev Shabbos.” She washed her hands and hurried out of the
basement, up the stairs to her halfbuilt house, to get some privacy. “Uh, what’s doing?”
“Baruch Hashem.” There was an uncomfortable edge in her voice, and then she said. “So I’m calling about your daughter, Chevi.”
Lani was silent while the principal spoke. When she hung up, she trudged through the dust to the kitchen area and stared stonily at the pipe that still stood in the area where her dream island belonged. The pipe seemed to mock her, whispering through the rust, “Look at me, I have become your nightmare.”
THE PIPE SEEMED TO MOCK HER, WHISPERING THROUGH THE RUST, “LOOK AT ME, I HAVE BECOME YOUR NIGHTMARE”

Riva was serving her kids a late lunch — they’d had to wait around while Maddie finished cleaning the kitchen — when Lani called. Her sister’s greeting was sharp and cold. “Great communication skills,” she said in a metallic voice.
Riva pressed the top half of a bagel down over tuna and lettuce. “Uh, what?”
“Is that your preferred way of talking? You have an issue, you take it to the principal?”
“I…” She scanned the kitchen swiftly. All the kids were around, hanging on to her every word. “One minute,” she told Lani. She moved the phone away from her face. “I’m coming right back,” she said to her kids. “Here, Shaya, your sandwich is ready. Fraidy and Tzippy, can you wait a few minutes?”
She went onto the porch and closed the door behind her. Down on the street below, people were rushing around, carrying bags or Shabbos flowers, phones pressed to ears. She leaned on the railing, steeled herself, and then said, “Okay, I’m listening.”
“You’re listening?” Lani echoed. “I’m so glad you’re listening. Well, I have nothing to tell you. I’m the one who should be doing the listening here.”
“What do you want to hear?”
“Okay, enough,” Lani snapped. “Let’s stop talking in riddles.”
“Really?”
“Yes, really. You sound shocked. Which makes sense, you’re her mother.”
“Uh…”
“Look, Riva, this is becoming really juvenile. I don’t know what made you call Mrs. Becker. Why couldn’t you just talk to me directly? What are you afraid of?”
“I tried talking to you. You didn’t want to listen. I wasn’t getting anywhere.”
“I listened very well. You keep sticking up for Fraidy, like she’s a poor, innocent shefela, but I spoke to Chevi and she has a different version of the story. And guess what? She’s my daughter, and therefore, I’ll stick up for her!”
Riva flung up her hands. “She’s torturing Fraidy!”
Lani was quiet for a moment. When she spoke again, the acid in her voice was gone, and she gave a long, weary sigh. “Riva, do you know what kind of stress this girl is under? She isn’t complaining, but I’m sure you can imagine how hard things are for her. She’s living in a tiny, ugly basement for months, and she has no idea when — or if — we’ll ever move back up. She isn’t stupid, she knows money is tight, she sees we stopped building. So she’s putting up with all this tension, and now you’re dragging her into this whole mess in school. What do you want from her?”
I just want to share with you that I got a job b"h working for a non profit marketing agency. For the coming year I'm leaving my current job (I was there for 7 years!) I'm going into Graphic Design full time iy"h. (that's my dream). I'm so excited!
I'll forever be grateful for all that you taught, (and continue to teach)…And for the neverending support! Chumie F., Lakewood, NJ
Riva wanted to ask her, who’s the one talking in riddles? But she restrained herself and let Lani continue.
“I want to know why you’re blaming Chevi for this fight,” Lani said. “Were you in school when it happened? Did you see it with your own eyes? I know Fraidy’s your daughter, but there are always two sides to a story!”
Lani had missed the point by a mile. But Riva wasn’t going to engage in a bitter, pointless argument. They were mature adults, there was a way to do this.
“Let’s try to calm down,” she said, keeping her voice as gentle as possible. She adjusted the phone headset on her ear. “That fight isn’t the point here. We’re dealing with a real situation, Lani. Have you tried talking to Chevi?”
“Yes, I have.”
“And?”
“Do you really want to know? She had some not nice things to say about Fraidy.”
Riva felt a twinge of pity, but only for a moment. This was merely a change of tactic, and that made her angry. “So you admit that Chevi isn’t all that innocent, huh?” she asked sharply. “I hear everything you’re saying, but seriously, what does your house have to do with any of this? How does it excuse bullying ?”
The porch door opened. Yaakov stood in the threshold, waving a raised palm inquisitively. Riva quickly brought a finger to her lips. “Lani,” she mouthed silently.
Yaakov frowned. Riva motioned for him to wait. “It has everything to do with it,” Lani said. “And can you stop using that word?”
“I’m calling a spade a spade. You’re trying to downplay it by calling it a fight, but that’s not what we’re dealing with here.”
“All I’m saying is that Chevi’s so stressed about this house, like all of us here are, and you’re going and adding unnecessary stress on top of that. Mrs. Becker wants to have a meeting with me
and Chevi and the teacher. So what’s going to happen, she’ll sit there and get yelled at and become even more miserable? Is that going to make you or Fraidy happy?”
How had she managed to make her and Fraidy sound like the villains?
Lani broke down. “You have no idea what it’s like, Riva. We’re… I feel like I’m choking. I’m not managing without Maddie, Shabbos is impossible in this place, the kids get in each other’s hair all day, I have no space to breathe, I feel like I’m going to lose it.”
“I’m sorry… That’s really tough…”
Lani sniffled quietly. Riva shifted her feet, the awkwardness making her skin clammy.
Tzippy pushed open the porch door. Yaakov told her to wait inside another minute and closed the door again. Riva was still holding the phone to her ear, but unable to think of anything else to say, she muttered, “Okay, I have to go now. Gut Shabbos.”
The second she disconnected, Yaakov pounded his fist in his palm. “She’s guilting you,” he stated. “You really shouldn’t let her do this to you.”
“I know this is supposed to be about Fraidy, but I feel horrible about the loan, Yaakov. Horrible.”
“I know,” he said. “And you know something? I already thought about reconsidering our decision a hundred times. But I’ll tell you the truth. Her desperation makes me worried. If they’re having such a hard time with money, would our loan even be returned? We can’t risk all our savings on her house.”
“I know.”
They couldn’t lend the Eisdorfs money. But maybe… if she could help Lani become financially independent through her breakfast business… maybe that would help?
Maybe. But there was no way she was picking up the phone now to share her idea with Lani.

Back in 1975, Mr. Chaim Baruch and Hindy Tescher founded the first Tescher’s shoe store on Sixteenth Avenue. That store has since become a Brooklyn landmark; with five decades of happy shoe-wearers, Tescher’s is still up and running (bear with me — the shoe industry is a minefield of puns) and as up to date as always. In fact, the name “Tescher” has become synonymous with quality shoes, expert fit, and that inviting leather smell that always makes you feel like it’s a special time of year.
“Shoes are practically in my genes,” says Mrs. Tescher. “My father owned Mehring’s Shoe Store in Williamsburg, and we operated Tescher’s in Boro Park for close to 50 years.”
That’s a lot of shoes.
Join us for a roundtable talk with the Teschers — both senior and junior — for tips, tales and trivia as they look back at the journey of thousands of steps over the last 50 years.
Mr. Chaim Baruch and Hindy Tescher: Founders of the Tescher’s brand. They opened the first store in 1975 in Brooklyn.
Fischer: Daughter of the senior Teschers, who operates the Yerushalayim branch of the store and serves customers from all over Israel.
Daughter of the senior Teschers, who operates the Lakewood branch of the store.
Mrs. Malky (Tescher)A steady client once came in with her son, who was toeing-in significantly. She said her pediatrician had assured her that he would outgrow the problem. But I had been following the child’s progress for some time, and I saw he wasn’t outgrowing the problem at all, and he wasn’t going up in shoe size. I shared my concerns with the mother and explained that I didn’t care about the cosmetic aspect, but something seemed wrong.
Mothers often tell me that their child is tripping frequently. A too-small shoe is often the cause of that, but if they come in and the shoe fits, I advise parents to check their child’s ears for fluid, since that affects their balance. I take a holistic approach when assessing each child.
I once noticed that a child hadn’t gone up in size for a couple of seasons. I shared my concern with the mother, and she followed up with the pediatrician. The child was diagnosed with celiac. Once it was managed properly, he started growing rapidly. Although he went through many pairs of shoes very quickly, his mother was grateful for each new pair she bought.
When mothers ask me if I think the shoes I’m recommending will last the whole season, I tell them, “You want your child to grow more than I do!”
To be on the safe side, she followed my advice and visited the orthopedist. He kept her there from ten o’clock a.m. until four p.m. for a full blood work-up and x-rays. When the results were in, he called all the nurses on the floor to show them the results. The child was diagnosed with rickets, a rare bone disease caused by a severe vitamin D deficiency.
Baruch Hashem, they caught it on time. Rickets is reversible only when it’s diagnosed early enough to correct the damage. Within three months of being treated, the child was walking regularly and went up three shoe sizes!
Had she gone store-hopping, the problem easily could have gone undiagnosed. I realized something was wrong only because I was familiar with this child and knew all the siblings, and his gait and size were so different.
There are many busy seasons. Before Pesach, before camp, and before the first snowstorm are all hectic, but nothing beats the back to school season — which is Erev Yom Tov at the same time. And school shoes are one pair you cannot skip. Does anyone know a kid whose summer footwear still resembles shoes?
—Leah Friedman, Tescher’s of LakewoodContrary to what people believe, fitting shoes is not as easy as just measuring for size and squeezing the toe. In addition, supportive shoes for young children help create good posture.
Leave the matching for the Shabbos outfits, and allow each child to get a pair of shoes that fit their feet. It’s more than just a fashion item; shoes support their entire body. Mothers often ask me for “the best pair in the store,” but that’s like asking for the best medicine in the pharmacy. Each child has a different foot and the shoe that fits their foot best is their “best pair.”
—Leah Friedman, Tescher’s of LakewoodEven though you might not see the benefits of a good shoe now, it affects the child’s development. You’ll be grateful years down the line. About orthotics: orthopedists don’t encourage arches until the foot stops growing. A properly fitted shoe is often the best choice.
—Malky Fischer, Tescher’s of YerushalayimThe ideal time to buy shoes for a baby is as soon as he can walk across the room. If you wait too long, the baby starts curling his toes to balance and that negatively impacts the way he walks.
The first five years of a child’s life are crucial for their foot development. That’s when the bones grow and form the feet. If new walkers don’t get shoes right away, they put strain on the muscles to keep their balance on slippery floors. We recommend lightweight, flexible, and supportive shoes.
—Mrs. Hindy Tescher, FounderShop after your baby naps. That’s when your child will be the happiest and most cooperative.
—Leah Friedman, Tescher’s of LakewoodWe once had a customer who shopped with three kids. She bought 50 pairs of shoes at once!
Another customer would come every six months with her two children and buy 24 pairs of shoes between the two of them.
Whenever possible, schedule your shoe shopping early in the day. The kids are less cranky, there are fewer shoppers and the salespeople can give you more individual service.
The most overwhelmed mothers are those who shop with all their children at once. Just like your pediatrician won’t see more than three children at a time, think of shoe shopping as an appointment.
—Malky Fischer, Tescher’s of YerushalayimChildren have so much to contend with on the first day of school. At least their brand-new shoes shouldn’t hurt! Allow your child to wear their shoes for a couple of hours before school starts to help them break into them.
—Leah Friedman, Tescher’s of LakewoodWhen you come to buy shoes, make sure your child is wearing the hosiery they’ll be wearing with the shoes you’re buying. Shoes fit differently on thin lycra tights and thick, cotton socks.
—Malky Fischer, Tescher’s of YerushalayimThe smallest size we carry is size 16. We go to great lengths (another pun, sorry) to carry shoes for preemies, children with developmental delays and those with really small or large shoe sizes.
As with many things in life, it just sort of happened.
I wasn’t particularly planning on going into this line. But someone I’m close with had a child with Down Syndrome and she was looking for the right shoe to support her son’s development. I invited her for a private appointment at the store and helped her out.
Later, she took her child to his physical therapist, one of the best in Israel. He examined the shoes and asked her, “Who fit these shoes for you?” He was amazed at the precise fit and started sending his clients to me.
Once, when I called to ask him what he had in mind for a certain client, he replied, “I know therapy, you know shoes.”
I have clients who travel three hours to see me because their providers send them. We’re in the process of setting up measuring stations in daycares so parents can place orders remotely. I hope this will save the kids and their parents the hassle of the long trip.
—Malky Fischer, Tescher’s of YerushalayimMy story is kind of similar. Therapists evaluating children have often commented on the good fit of their clients’ shoes and started referring their other clients to me.
—Leah Friedman, Tescher’s of LakewoodWorking with these children has taught me a lot. It teaches us all to be grateful that our kids ruin their shoes every season; it’s a sign of a healthy child. These mothers yearn for their children to ruin their shoes from use or to go up in size. It’s a heartfelt wish when I tell my customers, “Tzireis es gezinterheit,” tear them in good health.
—Mrs. Hindy Tescher, FounderShoes are integral to a person’s posture because the soles of the feet support the spine. Chazal instruct a person to sell all of his belongings in order to buy shoes, if necessary (Shabbos 129a). Chazal don’t say this about anything else; they recognized the importance of shoes. In fact, on Tisha B’av, one may not wear leather shoes because a proper pair of shoes is a real source of comfort.
Hatzlacha to all Yiddishe kinderlach on the new school year. May you use your shoes for many mitzvos, and may we all run to greet Moshiach soon!

“My first five years of walking had more breaks because I had young kids home,” she reminisces. But it seems she’s passed down her good habits. “Now my daughters are at that stage, loading toddlers into strollers after the school buses leave.”
Mrs. Ratner walks with a partner, “a very important factor,” she emphasizes, “because you don’t have the option of being lazy. If I don’t want to go, my partner schleps me along. Also, the timing you decide on is something that becomes a must and you stick to it. No waiting to do this or that, because then that walk won’t happen.”
Walking is second nature to Mrs. Ratner by now. “You wash negel vasser every day, brush your
teeth… and I walk. It has to become part of your routine.”
What timing works best, I want to know, and Mrs. Ratner says 9:00 a.m. is her current starting time.
“I walked at different times during different stages, when I scheduled according to my kids’ bus schedules. In the summer, I used to go early in the morning and in the winter I went later because of the cold.”
And talking of seasons, Mrs. Ratner opines that winter is the best time to walk. “It’s easier to walk in the cold, and we brisk-walk, we don’t do leisure strolls, so this gets our hearts to pump faster. Winter walks are a pleasure, I bundle up with whatever I need.” That can range from just coat to coat, gloves, earmuffs, and extra sweater, but no matter. These partners walk.
The only time they don’t walk is when the streets are icy.
How does this ardent walker manage the no-walk days? She doesn’t take off, that’s for sure! She and partner are both treadmill owners and they call each other and walk at home — in tandem.
I picture a conversation peppered with gasps and ask Mrs. Ratner if she and her friend can even talk. “Sure,” she says. “After years of walking, we can.”
Mrs. Ratner moves on enthusiastically to the perks of walking. “Steady walking in the morning gives you a huge amount of energy throughout the day. It helps you sleep better at night.”
Here she cautions the uninitiated to ease into it. “If you’re not consistent, you feel weak. You have to build up slowly. The first week will be hard, the second easier, and then you’ll start loving it.”
And what it does for one’s health! Says Mrs. Ratner, “My doctors are happy. Doing exercise stimulates your hormones to release serotonin, a mood stabilizer. It’s so calming. In fact, whenever my kids start krechtzing that they don’t have koach, I tell them to exercise every day. And they do. They partner up and do night walks.”
If you’re lucky to be a walker yourself and are mentally plating your food the entire way back because walking somehow makes you ravenous, it’s great to hear what one dietician told Mrs. Ratner, after she described her high-carb, postwalk breakfast.
“That dietician said that if you eat (a high-carb meal) right after you exercise, it’s fine. The workout klaps down your sugar like the insulin diabetics give themselves.”
My excuses for not walking can rival my kids excuses for not going to bed. The myths I’ve amused myself with! I move around all day anyway, I need a partner, I don’t have time, it’s not good for me pre- or post-baby, I’ll be too tired afterward and won’t be able to work, I won’t have koach for the kids. And on and on.
If you’ve found your match, don’t stop here. Keep reading. You’ll never think such nonsense again!
Mrs. Ratner adds another perk. “When you need to walk somewhere far on Shabbos and Yom Tov, you’re so able and okay.”
She’s quick to point out the many benefits, walking isn’t everything. Yes, it’s free; yes, it’s accessible; but exercise for body toning is necessary, too.
By now I’m hooked. I’m just curious how steady walkers keep it up. What motivates them?
For Mrs. Ratner, it’s “my partner, and the great feeling of walking. That breeds more success. I’ve had times that I stopped and started, what with babies, weddings, and my own kimpeturins coming home. I’ve taken breaks. But I feel the difference and want to get back, and I do! My partner and I walk every walkable day, on Erev Pesach, on Chol Hamoed. And when my partner takes her breaks, I go by myself, even if it’s not too exciting.”
Steady walking usually brings plenty of social opportunities, I’d imagine. Do people want to stop and schmooze? Does it or does it not hamper the walking process?
“It doesn’t happen so often that we really stop. We meet other walkers who are obviously well on their way and not up for stopping. Sometimes we meet someone, pause for a bit, and secretly rejoice with the little break, but this doesn’t happen often enough to really impact our progress.”
Did anything interesting ever happen en route?
“No, baruch Hashem. But walking itself is an amazing experience. It brings clarity to the mind. You get to see people and the changing in-
frastructure of the town, which is a great outlet for stay-at-home moms. I myself get to wave to my happily waiting einiklach. And having a partner keeps me at it without undue rigidity — we can always reschedule.”
And that’s how this busy mommy and bobby makes walking work for her. I’m inspired!
I am especially eager to speak to Mrs. Weiss because she does not walk with a partner, on principle. Since I love a good argument, I’m all psyched up to hear the opposing view after Mrs. Ratner’s partner-lauding, and yes, talking to Mrs. Weiss does broaden my mind. With her effervescent personality, I also feel, as we speak, that I’m running hills with her.
With less time in the running than Mrs. Ratner but very motivated, Mrs. Weiss has been at this for over three years.
Why does she do it?
“It gives me energy and puts me into a good mood. When I come back from that walk, I’m energized and really ready to start my day. Especially in the winter! The cold, crisp air — it’s amazing what it does to me. My drive isn’t weight loss, just the energy.” But even with that last disclaimer, Mrs. Weiss does say she includes hills in her walks, to add a real workout.
I feel just about ready to join! When’s the best time to walk? Mrs. Weiss says she likes to do it first thing in the morning.
WALKING ISN’T EVERYTHING. YES, IT’S FREE; YES, IT’S ACCESSIBLE; BUT EXERCISE FOR BODY TONING IS NECESSARY, TOO
“I wait for my kids’ buses and leave with them. I find that if I go back into the house just to do a few things, I lose the drive. At one point I would wake up earlier than the kids and walk then, but that was real mesirus nefesh Yet even now, I do it before I start my day.”
Do different times work, too, though? How about a change of venue?
Mrs. Weiss did night walks for a while. “I’d leave my husband with the kids and run out at night. I’d also walk on the treadmill sometimes, but it doesn’t compare.”
So it seems that walks in the mornings win, hands down.
And here come the perks!
“On days that I’m so tired that all I want is a nap, I do my walk first. And then I don’t think of napping anymore. Another side benefit of walking is that I get to drink the right amount of water. I aim for at least eight cups a day, and with two cups before the walk and two cups after, I’m well on my way quite early in the day.”
This woman’s enthusiasm is so contagious that I wonder if she ever has any challenges to her routine. Surprise, she does.
“I can’t walk in the snow. I’m not from Monsey and I didn’t grow up with snow, so even a small coating frightens me. And extreme heat also doesn’t work.”
Does that stop her? Not at all.
“In the summers, I try to walk between 7:00 to 8:00 in the morning, to beat the rising temperatures. And when I need to stop in the winter, it’s not hard for me to get right back to it, because of what the walking does for me.”
And here it comes, the clincher.
“I don’t walk with a partner, davka! I want convenience, not pressure. Once or twice people asked to partner with me, to which I said, ‘No offense, but I love walking on my own.’ Walking is my time and I love to give my mind the space to wander and float. In the last two years though, I joined Rebbetzin Tukachinsky’s course, so I listen to that. And let me tell you, that course gives me the impetus to walk more. While I generally aim for 35 minutes, I sometimes go over the time while I’m listening to the lectures.”
As an introvert, all this really jives with me. It’s so great to hear how walking can work for all types of people in their own way. Which brings me to my next question, about meet-
“I DON’T WALK WITH A PARTNER, DAVKA! I WANT CONVENIENCE, NOT PRESSURE”
ing people who want to schmooze. Does it happen, I ask Mrs. Weiss, and how do you handle it?
“I actually meet a lot of ‘regulars,’ but we’re all walking, so we greet each other and move on. I even have an Asian ‘regular’ who I pass every day, a sweet lady who I greet each morning.”
When I ask if anything interesting ever happened on her walk, Mrs. Weiss’s answer echoes Mrs. Ratner’s: “No, baruch Hashem!”
And it seems the ladies like it that way — no drama to distract them from their daily dose of goodness.
Talking to this sprightly mother and grandmother of many leaves me with a fervent thought of im yirtzeh Hashem by me! A walker for over three decades, Mrs. Klein sums it up with passion and wit: “Walking is good for the mind, the body, and the people looking out the window!”
This veteran’s tip is to walk with a close neighbor, because if you’re in sight of each other daily it’s that much easier to get going, or at least make plans to. “No waiting for each other. My neighbor and I walk every single day for half an hour.”
After more than 30 years on the road, walking isn’t getting easier. “But we still enjoy it,” asserts Mrs. Klein. “It’s great for the mind, and my goal is always to walk better.”
I question Mrs. Klein on her motivation for walking and I get a shrug over the phone lines. “It’s just a good thing to do. It’s good to know you did something for yourself at the beginning of the day, you got dressed and out.” And by “dressed” she in-
cludes a sheitel, of course. Every millennial bone in my body is in awe of that.
“I know every dent of my walk by heart, but the hills are hard,” says this former city-dweller. When I mention the workout bonus that comes with the hills, Mrs. Klein (who differs from the other walkers I’ve had the pleasure of speaking with in that she doesn’t walk for the workout) is quick to point out the other pleasures she encounters along the way.
“We have our friends in the street. I pass my kids’ houses and I can wave to my einiklach. And walking builds up an appetite!”
All well and good, because again, according to the fitness gurus out there, eating soon after a workout is less intense on the body.
Which is another advantage to the long list of the benefits of walking. I don’t know about you, but I just need to find my walking shoes!
AUTHOR’S POSTSCRIPT: Writing this article energized me for real! I asked my neighbor to partner with me. She wasn’t sure if she could commit, so while I waited for her answer, I tried walking a few times myself. What should I say, ladies — all that the interviewees claimed is true! I forgot my tiredness. I came back refreshed and full of life, ready to tackle my endless list of things that a mommy does every single day on a loop. Best of all, my toddler was thrilled with the outings in her stroller, and even better, came back adorably drowsy and ready for her morning nap. Wins all over the place!

Two planes, hijacked by Islamic terrorists, flew directly into the Twin Towers, the centerpiece of the World Trade Center in Manhattan. Both towers imploded, killing close to 3,000 people.
The attack was part of four coordinated terror attacks on symbols of Western economic and military strength.
The first attack of its kind on American shores, it shocked and shook the entire world.
Where were you when you heard what happened?
THREE WRITERS REMEMBER
Where were you on 9/11?
It’s a question I get every year, when my children come home from school after learning about a historic event called 9/11.
On that day, they’re taught, terrorists crashed planes into the Twin Towers and other locations, killing thousands of people.
And every year, when I look at the papers their teachers have given out and listen to what their teachers — who were too young to remember that fateful day — had to say, the memories come rushing back.
Though over two decades have passed since that sunny September day, I will never forget it. I was in school when rumors began to fly about an attack in the city. I remember the panic and fear, and how our principal assembled us in the auditorium to say Tehillim.
That’s when the school’s fire alarm started to blare.
Girls jumped up and shrieked, sure that the terrorists were targeting our school, too. Looking back, I realize that the principal was just as terrified as we were, but she managed to restore order and dismissed us for the day. Since no one knew yet what was really going on, or where the next attack would take place, it seemed the safest option.
In retrospect, I wish I could have stayed in school. The rest of that day loomed before me, a cocktail of fear, disbelief, and intense sadness. News reporters spoke in incredulous tones of people jumping from the top floors of the towers, of New York City’s glorious landmark collapsing like a pile of toy blocks. It was hard, impossible, to come to terms with what had happened.
That afternoon, I took a walk to the shore just a few blocks from my house, where there had once been a beautiful view of the Manhattan landscape. Where the towers had stood, stretching to the heavens, a thick gray plume of smoke spiraled upward.
It was heart-wrenching and humbling.
A week later, we assembled in shul on Rosh Hashanah, still reeling from the events of that tragic day.
It was time for chazaras hashatz of Shacharis. The shul was quiet as we waited for the chazzan to begin.
But he didn’t.
Instead, the sound of weeping broke out in the men’s section. On the other side of the mechitzah, the chazzan’s wife sat and sobbed as she murmured the names of her husband’s coworkers. Her husband had worked on one of the upper floors of the Twin Towers. By a miracle, he had come to work a few minutes late that day, and was still riding the elevator when the plane struck.
His coworkers were not so lucky.
Never before had the words of davening rung so true to us: How many will pass from the world… Who will live, and who will die… Who will die at his intended time, and who will not die at his intended time… Who by fire… Who by strangulation… Who by stoning… Who will live with serenity and who will be distraught…
There was not a dry eye in the shul.
Later, when we went to say Tashlich, the smoke still rose over the scene of death and devastation. People came, stared, and asked Hashem to forgive their sins.
This year, I know, my children will once again ask me about the day they only know from history lessons. And I will tell them what it was like, on that long-ago day.
And at the same time, I will whisper a tefillah that Hashem spread His protection over His nation, and that this longlasting galus should end.
THE SHUL WAS QUIET AS WE WAITED FOR THE CHAZZAN TO BEGIN. BUT INSTEAD, THE SOUND OF WEEPING BROKE OUT IN THE MEN’S SECTION
“So you think Sunday will be best?” I asked, flipping the pages of the calendar. I was standing in my kitchen in Yerushalayim, talking on the phone to my mother, who was standing in her kitchen in Brooklyn. My father had left the house almost an hour earlier.
He was running late for his 9:00 a.m. meeting because of selichos, which he refused to skip or rush through. He had tried to get a ride that would get him there on time, but at the last minute that didn’t work out. He went anyway, just a little late.
My mother and I were finalizing plans for my family’s trip to the United States for the seudas hodaah in honor of my grandfather’s 100th birthday. All of the cousins would be there, too, as Zeidy really wanted all his descendants to be part of the celebration. We scheduled the event for Chanukah, the anniversary of my grandparents’ arrival in the United States. They had come to the U.S. in 1937, on one of the last boats to make it out of Europe before World War II. In fact, that was the final trip for the boat they had traveled on, the Pilsudski; it was bombed on its next voyage.
My mother was discussing the details of our upcoming flight when I heard my sister’s voice in the background. She had just come into the house and was telling my mother that a plane had crashed into one of the Twin Towers.
The Twin Towers. Where my father’s meeting was being held!
My mother said something that I didn’t catch. Then the phone went dead.
The international calls simply overwhelmed the capacity of the telephone infrastructure, and for hours we couldn’t get through. The new reports were confusing and frightening. Was it an accident? That idea was quickly dispelled as additional planes crashed and burned. A
terror attack, in the United States? Wait, wasn’t the U.S. practically invincible, with its government constantly lecturing Israel to “show restraint” when Yidden were killed in terror attacks on the streets of Yerushalayim? The news was hard to believe. The pictures were even worse.
Late that evening, those of us who were overseas finally got word that my father was okay. He had taken the subway to downtown Manhattan that morning, and there’s a section where the train crosses over the river. The train was on the bridge and my father was actually looking out the window when he saw the unbelievable sight of a plane flying directly at the North Tower and crashing into it. My father turned to the man sitting next to him and said, “There’s just been a terrorist attack.”
The man shook his head. “You’re delusional,” he said. Like other people, this man’s initial reaction was that it must be just a terrible accident.
My father didn’t make it to his meeting that day. That was a good thing, since so many of his colleagues never made it out, never made it home.
Hundreds of tiny details joined together that morning to make my father just a few minutes late. Exactly how long selichos took. The ride that didn’t work out. The train he missed, the train he caught. Myriad details that were clearly arranged only by the Master Conductor, Who arranged and is arranging all the details of our lives, exactly as they’re meant to be.
THE TWIN TOWERS. THAT’S WHERE MY FATHER’S MEETING WAS BEING HELD! THEN THE PHONE WENT DEAD
An unfortunate historical fact, that’s what 9/11 was to me. An emotionless fact.
I’m from the generation that does not have significant memories of the attack. I was three and a half when the planes hit the towers. If I close my eyes and spiral down the tunnel of memory lane, I can reach a hazy, lingering memory of my mother pointing up to the sky, gray clouds spreading overhead. Maybe she had indicated that it was getting dark, or a thunderstorm was about to hit. Maybe it was 9/11. It’s hard to know for sure.
As I grew up, I learned about what happened on that day. I knocked down Lego towers as a child, yelling, “The Twin Towers!” It was fun and thrilling. The magnitude of the tragedy passed right by me.
ABut one day, as an adult, I came across pictures of the attack. They were images I had never seen before, at least not presented like this — a step by step replay of the attack. I stared in horror: An airplane is slicing through the sky, heading sharply toward one of the Twin Towers. Another image, smoke rising from the point of impact, exploding fires writhing like beasts from the underworld.
I began to shake. There was a picture of people standing on the ground, shock stamped on their faces, staring upward. Their expressions were contorted in terror and fear. I knew what they were thinking: There are people in there! I knew what they were feeling, the sickening horror. I knew because staring at those images, that was exactly how I felt.
The shock overwhelmed me. I was trembling, sweating, weak and cold. I just sat there, weeping uncontrollably over a tragedy that had occurred 21 years earlier. The enormity of the loss was impossible to process. People in those towers were burned alive. People with entire lives,
people with loved ones, people with goals and dreams. Close to three thousand people died! I couldn’t wrap my brain around it.
I tried to find meaning in this. I was taught that everything happens for a reason, and we need to try to find a lesson in all that transpires in our life.
I tried to take apart the numbers. Nine is for… the ninth of Av. And what does 11 represent? What number month is Av? I count from Tishrei and reach 11. This realization startles me. The dates of 9/11 and Tishah B’Av share numbers!
The realization strikes me: We had a majestic, glorious Beis Hamikdash that our enemies burned. How often was that just an unfortunate historical fact to me? How often was it just an ancient story that my teachers relayed, without my absorbing the gravity of the loss?
Can I open my heart and imagination, and weep bitterly over its destruction? If I was able to cry over a tragedy that occurred two decades ago, I can weep for our own nation’s tragedy that occurred two millennia ago.
I closed my eyes, thought about the suffering of our nation. It aroused flames in my heart. I let pain and yearning engulf me. I let it sear and scorch the crevices and contours of my heart, and instinctively, I cried out for Mashiach.
The pictures of the destruction of the Twin Towers ignited a profound emotional understanding of the pain of the Churban Beis Hamikdash.

Picture this: You’re sitting alone in your room, feeling an overwhelming urge to do something you know is not good for yousuch as binge eating, excessive drinking, or engaging in behaviors that will hurt you in the long run. You might think, “Why do I keep doing this even though I know it’s not right?” Well, you’re not alone. Many of us find ourselves stuck in the kinds of habits that we just can’t seem to quit. But what if there is a way out?
So, here’s the thing: At times, we get caught up in addictive behaviors without even realizing it. These habits run on autopilot, and we don’t pay much attention to what triggers these urges. But guess what? There’s a secret weapon hidden in plain sight — the act of paying attention to how we feel right before the urge hits.
Have you ever noticed that these urges tend to strike when you’re feeling really down or upset about something? Perhaps a good friend rubbed you the wrong way, or you’re bothered by a spat with a family member. Negative feelings act as the high-grade fuel that powers those harmful habits. It’s like they’re on a mission to numb the pain or make you forget about your problems, even if only
for a little while.
Addiction is not about loving the thing you’re addicted to; it’s about the escape route from the pain it provides. Imagine being in a tunnel of bad emotions, with the addiction serving as a flashlight distracting you from the darkness. Unfortunately, the more you use that flashlight, the deeper you go into the tunnel. The only way to escape is to turn off the flashlight and face the darkness.
Breaking this pattern starts with a simple realization: ‘I’m feeling really upset right now.’ Recognizing those emotions is half the battle won. Picture yourself on a roller coaster, and this is the part where you realize you’re about to go down a steep slope. That’s your cue to ask yourself, “Why
There’s a secret weapon hidden in plain sight—the act of paying attention to how we feel right before the urge hits.
We often rush into these addictive behaviors without understanding why we’re doing them. It’s like trying to fix a leaky roof without knowing where the leak is coming from. So, slow down, take a breath, and ask yourself those questions. You might need to close your eyes and think for a moment: What’s causing this feeling? What’s making me so upset?
Remember, being kind to oneself is key. You deserve compassion. Think of it this way: if your best friend was feeling down, you’d comfort them without a second thought, right? Well, why not do the same for yourself? Instead of succumbing to that addictive urge, try giving yourself a mental hug. Say, “It’s okay to feel this way. I’m here for you.”
These addictive behaviors usually stem from past injuries, such as feeling unloved or unworthy. They’re like ghosts from the past that keep haunting us. But the good news is, you have the power to heal those wounds. Be to yourself what you would be to a friend — kind and understanding.
So, here’s the encouragement: breaking free from addictive behaviors is possible. It starts with noticing how you feel, giving yourself acceptance and selfcompassion, and seeking healthier coping mechanisms. Remember, you’re not alone on this journey; you are stronger than you think, and overwhelming support awaits you outside the tunnel of addiction.
Have you ever noticed that these urges tend to strike when you’re feeling really down or upset about something?
Pronation is the foot’s natural inward rolling motion during walking or running to absorb shock, adapt to uneven surfaces and distribute impact forces for stability. Obviously, your pronation affects the way you wear (and wear out) your shoes. But imagine if you could get a shoe that’s optimal for your pronation! Unbelievably, many shoe stores offer services to test your pronation before you purchase shoes. Among technologically advanced tests, the “wet test” is pretty common. During the test, you wet your soles and then walk on a specialized mat. Based on the footprint pattern, the staff can assess whether you have a neutral, low or high arch.
Toe prosthetics date back as far as 3,000 years. Explorers found a mummy in Egypt with a leather and wood contraption that is believed to be a prosthetic toe.
You’d pinch every part of that adorable baby — feet included. Part of what may make babies’ feet so cute is their structure: Padded with fat where an arch would normally be, babies’ feet are soft and appear flat and chubby. In fact, children develop arches only when they are over two.
Statistics show that American bodies are getting bigger (hello, obesity), but are the feet following? In the United States, the best-selling shoe size is 8.5 for women and 10.5 for men — up a full size from 30 years ago.
Sweaty feet? It’s no wonder. Each foot contains about 250,000 sweat glands. While the sweat itself doesn’t smell, socks and shoes can trap odor-causing bacteria, which prosper in dark, damp environments.
Stop crying over smelly feet. Believe it or not, your malodorous feet can earn you some money. Odor-Eaters, a company specializing in odor-neutralizing shoe insoles, organizes an annual national competition called the Rotten Sneaker contest. Contestants are judged by the odor of their shoes. The 2011 winner was nine years old from Benjamin, Utah. Sterling B. earned a whopping $2,500 for having the foulest footwear.
That’s the distance covered by an average individual throughout their lifetime. Considering the substantial pressure exerted on our feet, it’s only logical that foot problems are associated with lower back pain, headaches, indigestion and spine misalignment.
Women suffer from foot problems four times as much as men. Those four-inch spikes are responsible for that agonizing reality.
As flat as your feet are, your entire foot is never flat on the ground. The weight shifts from the heel to the outside of the foot, to the midline and then the inside, ending with a push-off at the big toe.
If you count, you probably have 26 bones in each foot. Some people are blessed with more — if you have extra or accessory toes. Fourteen of the 26 are found in the toes. Each toe consists of three bones — except the big toe, which has only two.
Lined with thicker skin than anywhere else in our body, our feet are protected from puncture wounds.
There are four common foot types. Can you find yours?
1. The Peasant Foot is characterized by its flat arch and typically has a wider shape. 2. Structural Flat Foot, characterized by a low or no arch, causing their entire sole to touch the ground. 3. The Egyptian Foot. This foot type features a longer second toe that extends beyond the big toe. It earned its name due to its resemblance to the shape depicted in ancient Egyptian art. 4. Greek Foot, the second toe is longer than the big toe, while the remaining toes progressively decrease in length. There are various other foot shapes, such as high-arched feet, wide feet, and narrow feet.
THOSE LIGHTS — IT’S LIKE THEY’RE HERDING US SOMEWHERE!
SHOAL WATER! ANY MORE SHALLOW, AND WE’RE GONNA BE IN TROUBLE!
I DON’T KNOW WHAT IT MEANS.
IN THE MORNING
LOOK AT THAT!
I DON’T BELIEVE IT!
RECAP: SHIMON
ARE SPEAKING LATE AT NIGHT. SUDDENLY, CLOUDS BLOCK OUT THE STARS, THE SEA GLOWS WITH A STRANGE LIGHT, AND AN OMINOUS HUMMING BEGINS TO SOUND.
TURN THE SHIP AROUND, CAPTAIN?
NEGATIVE. WE’RE RUNNING BLIND — NO WAY TO TELL WHICH WAY WE’LL END UP. KEEP GOING. IF IT GETS ANY SHALLOWER, WE’LL DROP ANCHOR AND WAIT IT OUT.
THIS IS IT, SIR! WE CAN’T GO ANY FURTHER.
DROP ANCHOR! SET A NIGHT WATCH! WE’LL REEVALUATE IN THE MORNING.
IT’S INCREDIBLE!
WHO DISTURBS MY PEACE?
HOW DID WE GET HERE?
IT SEEMS THE PATH BETWEEN THE SEA LIGHTS GUIDED US. ALMOST LIKE —
