WILL OUR CHILDREN BE NOSTALGIC, TOO?

Reading about the Nosh Nostalgia made me wonder if our children will have any nostalgia about nosh. For them it is just part of the fabric of everyday life, and there’s so much, that they don’t savor it or treasure it the way we did. For us, Super Snack was a Shabbos treat we looked forward to, while for my kids, it’s what they take along to school every day!

A LITTLE GALLOWS HUMOR

Yosher Koach for the amazing “A Little Gallows Humor,” printed in your Purim online magazine. It was hysterical and the poet’s use of language and so many different poetry skills is amazing! I so enjoyed reading it, I sent it to all my contacts (536 people at last count!) Can’t wait to read Part II. A Freilichin Purim and let’s have more articles from J. Mesch. Y. Metzger

DON’T BREAK YOUR MACHINES

I read your article about cleaning the playroom for Pesach. It was a great guide with a bunch of useful tips. I would like to make you aware about one point that you made regarding washing Lego. You wrote that the washing machine is the best way to wash toys. I work as a secretary for an appliance repair company. A big percentage of our service calls for washers in this season are because toys are being washed in machines. Even when using mesh bags, the toys can rip through the mesh and cause damage. The bellow (rubber from a front load washer) rips very easily when not washing regular loads. Objects can get stuck in the drain pump, and a tech needs to unclog the pump or it needs to be replaced. Toys moving around in the machine can bang up and crack the tub. Many times the repair is not cost-effective — most people just purchase a whole new machine. You can probably replace all your toys for the price a new machine can cost. I cannot guarantee it, but a dishwasher is

probably a better idea (in mesh bags only) because the toys stay in one place on the racks. Fradi B.

SARA GOLDSTEIN RESPONDS:

To Fradi B. Thank you for making me aware of this. I wash my Lego in the wash machine for years and B”H never had a problem. I hope it wasn’t an inconvenience for anybody. All the best, Sara

DON’T WASTE THE YOLKS

May I make one comment on your cake recipes? Never just discard yolks or whites. My challah recipe calls for three egg yolks, so usually, before Yom Tov or a simcha when I am baking a few batches, I save the whites, (with a drop of salt to make it halachically acceptable) and when I have nine whites, my family is treated to a coconut cake. I also add any leftover whites or yolks to my potato kugel whose recipe is flexible enough so it does not matter. For example, if I have four whites and I would have used six eggs in my kugel, I use up the whites and only add five. We waste enough food. Let’s not look to increase the baal tashchis. P. Samuels

A FEW GOOD (SNOW) MEN

Every Sunday, I’m left racking my brain what do with my high-energy little girl who absolutely hates to be bored. Thank you for giving us this great arts-and-craftsy mishloach manos idea! I’ve never made this type of mishloach manos before, but I really enjoyed it! My daughter was happily occupied for quite a while, filling containers and rolling orange papers for the nose. Our veritable army of snowmen came out so adorable and our Snowkids can’t wait to hand out their snowmen on Purim. The Snowkids’ Mommy

NOSTALGIA NOSH

Firstly, I agree with the writer about the omission of Turkish taffies and sugar daddies.. But there’s so much more that has been disappearing from store shelves, that it boggles the mind! For example, there used to be yummy cookies called “Education Cookies.” The upper half was covered with chocolate as well as the underpart. That was one fo my favorites as a kid (aside from yodels and crackerjacks, of course) Kretchmer’s wheat germ flakes came later in 80s. A Monsey Old-Timer

Your Voice RE: AN OPPORTUNITY, MISUSED (ISSUE #41-42)

The letter writer in Issue 42, who criticized Shaindy K. for bringing up an important matter seemed to have misunderstood the original letter writer’s intent (in my opinion). It didn’t seem to me that Shaindy was judging the woman with the loaded wagon; rather she was upset at the curtness with which she refused to let the lady go ahead. With “basic mentchlichkeit,” it seemed to me that she expected a response or a short explanation. “I’m so sorry, I’m in a hurry,” would be more than enough, as would an apologetic smile. A Kiddush Hashem is not always performed at the expense of one’s time — just a little mentchlichkeit. I also must add, that I just witnessed a story of the opposite nature, where a whole line of women waiting in a children’s store were so happy to let a young man go ahead of them with the one item his wife probably sent him to pick up. A proud member of the community

DON’T MISS THE OPPORTUNITY!

Dear Yidden! We are now in the exciting Purim season. I want to remind you of an amazing opportunity we have. It says that our tefillos on Purim will not be denied. It is also brought from the Chofetz Chaim that if Hashem sees that we really want and daven for Moshiach, He will send him. So on Purim, let’s not forget to beg Hashem to send the geulah in His great mercy. I do not have to elaborate on the challenging and painful times we are living in. May we be zoche, still this year, to the yom shekulo tov, bimheirah beyameinu amen.

MI K’AMCHA YISROEL!

Last week Sunday, the weather was crisp and fresh, enticing me to head outdoors and start tackling my Pesach shopping list. I grabbed a few hundred dollars from my cash envelope and placed the money in my jacket pocket. Later that day, as I walked into a store, a lady came running after me waving a handful of bills. I had been careless, and dropped the money. When she handed it back to me, I saw that two $50 bills and a $20 had been returned to me. That’s not a very small sum to find lying around, and she could have easily walked away with it, but as Jew, she chased me down and handed it back! Mi K’amcha Yisroel! Gratefully, a Proud Yid

EDITOR’S BULLETIN: It seems like the writer of the letter regarding an issue with Wilton cupcake liners (Issue #41) misunderstood what she was being told by Wilton. Please see the correct information below.

WILTON

Question: Are your cupcake liners coated with non-kosher wax? Answer: It is not wax. It is a PET coating. If the customer is referring to a seasonal nut cup, they only coat the small 1.25-oz nut cups (with the PET coating). The large 3.25-oz seasonal cups are uncoated so that they are bakeable. Since it is a paper product and not food, we do not have kosher information. Wilton Customer Service

OU

Question:Is there a problem with Wilton cupcake liners regarding kashrus? Answer: In our experience, there is nothing problematic with additives used in cupcake liners. The customer service claim made by Wilton, that the cupcake liners are either coated with PET (polyethylene terephthalate) or are not coated at all is consistent with our understanding of how this material is processed. OU Staff We apologize for any aggravation this caused. Wishing you all a Kosher and Freilichen Purim. The Monsey View

As told to: Basya Lev

A single Diamond says a lot… It says you are set in stone, and that you care to find the perfect gem to symbolize your bond. But that’s just half the story. You share a life full of twists, turns, a growing family, and special personal chapters.

I received a phone call from a lady who owned the house next door to the apartment I was renting. She had moved to Eretz Yisroel less than a year before and was looking for a new tenant. With all the new apartments going up, she was having trouble finding someone who was willing to rent her old house. She asked me if I knew of anyone. I wrote down the information, and tried to think of someone for her. Unfortunately, whoever I asked was not interested. Then I realized that maybe I, myself, should take the apartment. Although it had three bedrooms like the one I was currently in, all the rooms were bigger, and I could really use the extra space. My husband and I discussed it later that night. Next, we spoke with our Rav, who felt that we should move in if we could manage to cover the extra amount of rent. We relocated, and a few months later, I found out that our previous landlord decided to throw down his house and build multi-family units. I realized what a bracha Hashem sent us. If we would not have moved when we did, we would have been forced to move to another apartment where rent would have been much more than we were currently paying. Hodu l’Hashem ki tov!

Advice By: Dini Harris

So Little Time; So Much To Do What are you doing for Purim this year? Kallah and police costumes, or handsewn creations to match your gourmet themed mishloach manos? What’s scheduled for the seudah? Chicken soup, with roast and potatoes? Or stuffed mushroom skewers and Hoisin chicken? We invest so much thought, time, and effort into the mitzvos of Purim; shopping, baking, creating, and cooking, that we often forget one important point: Purim is a one-day yom tov. Why is this so important to remember? Because, if we’re not aware of how short Purim is, the whole day will zoom by as we run from task to task. We’ll be too busy to stop and enjoy Purim, too busy to create a Purim’diga atmosphere for our family, too busy to take care of our family and too busy to think about the lessons of Purim. And then, because we’re so busy and have so much to accomplish, we’re likely to be tense and edgy. Then, we’re liable to get angry at the little person who decorates the hallway with chocolate handprints, the one who kvetches that he’s hungry, and the one who throws up on the living room floor. In other words, we’ll be annoyed with our closest and dearest: our children and husband who are

34

/ T HE MONS E Y V IE W

doing what they should be doing – living the Purim experience. So, let’s take the time now, before all the busyness starts, to decide what we are going to do on Purim and organize how we want to act on Purim. This advance planning will help ensure that Purim remains a joyful day for us and our families and that the day passes in peace and harmony.

IT REALLY IS A SHORT DAY The day is really short, so take the time now to strategize so that the bulk of your Purim work will be finished before Purim starts. Take mishloach manos as an example; don’t even contemplate making fresh sushi Purim morning to give out during the day! Instead, choose food items that can be prepared in advance — foods that can be frozen or that don’t spoil quickly. Don’t only prepare them in advance, also package them in advance. The only thing you should do on Purim is give them out. The same is true regarding the Purim seudah. Choose yummy foods that freeze easily. Your family would much rather have a relaxed mother and a simple seudah than an exotic gastronomic experience with a worn-out mommy.

We invest so much thought, time, and effort into the mitzvos of Purim; shopping, baking, creating, and cooking, that we often forget one important point: Purim is a one-day yom tov. You don’t have to worry, as much as you do in advance, you won’t be bored on Purim. If you prepare in advance, you’ll have just enough time to dress the kids in their costumes, hear the Megillah, deliver mishloach manos and schmooze/sing/dance with the people who bring you mishloach manos.

TALK IT OUT So, you’re going to be smart this Purim. By the time you break your Taanis Esther fast, your dining room table will be decorated with cellophane wrapped mishloach manos waiting for delivery and your entire Purim seudah will

life is a little simpler Time-honored. Traditions are taken seriously.

Craftsmanship is respected. Things are not slow, but we leave enough time for things to be done right. And the results show in every bottle. Boondocks Whiskey is brought to you by Whisky Advocate Lifetime Achievement Award winner, Dave Scheurich. And while you may have never heard his name, Dave has helped create some of America’s most recognized whiskeys over the last 40 years. But all this talk would make Dave blush. The real audience Dave cares about has enjoyed the drinks he created and has never given a second thought to the artist behind the scenes. And that’s just fine with Dave. His love, passion and expertise are legendary – and can be found in every bottle of Boondocks, what may well be his crowning achievement. Enjoy Responsibly.

Advice

Of course, Purim is unpredictable and you can’t expect your schedule to happen exactly as planned. be ready in the freezer. Great – that’s a good start. But, there’s still so much that you’re going to have to do on Purim itself. Take out a pen and paper and make a list of on-Purim jobs. Really. Do it. Make a list. Some ideas to include: • Daven Shacharis • Dress the kids in costumes • Hear Megillah • Serve breakfast • Deliver mishloach manos to neighbors • Deliver mishloach manos to close family • Deliver mishloach manos to teachers and rebbes • Heat up food • Serve the first seudah (or lunch, if your minhag is to only eat one formal seudah) • Clean the house up a bit • Say Tehillim Now list the hours you have on Purim, and then assign jobs to these hours. For example, you might assign davening Shacharis, putting on costumes and serving breakfast to the slot between 7:00-9:00. Mishloach manos deliveries might be slotted for 11:00-12:00. When thinking about the Purim schedule, consider who will be doing which job. The kids might be able to deliver mishloach manos to neighbors, while your husband might be able to be in charge of deliveries to the rebbeim, but you might want to hand deliver the mishloach manos to your parents. Think about these factors and plan accordingly. Once you’ve thought about your plan, make sure to talk it over with your husband. You don’t want to have him scheduled for mishloach manos deliveries at the same time that he plans on taking the boys to “Yeshivas Mordechai HaTzaddik.” You also won’t be able to send him out with the car once he starts drinking. If you talk

36

/ THE MO NS E Y V IE W

these things over in advance and arrange your schedule accordingly, fewer surprises will crop up and things will remain more-or-less under control. Of course, Purim is unpredictable and you can’t expect your schedule to happen exactly as planned. So just mentally prepare yourself to expect the unexpected and to veer from your schedule as needed.

NO KVETCHING! Tons of mishloach manos arrive and there’s lots of yummy food ready for the seudah, but the children are starving. It seems absurd, but that really can happen on Purim. Remember, hungry kids (and husbands) are kvetchy kids (and husbands). So, start the day right by giving your family a filling, healthy breakfast. It doesn’t have to be anything special — cornflakes and milk is fine — as long as they sit down long enough to fill themselves up. Then make sure their tummies remain full throughout the day. If the kids ingest nonstop lollipops and cookies, they’ll go sugar-crazy. Let them have some nosh, but serve them healthy snacks and lunch so that they get some nutrition too. Even with nutritious foods in their bellies, your children might be out-of-sorts; they’re off-schedule, wearing itchy costumes, and being bombarded by a constant flow of visitors. So take it easy. Be prepared that they may not to be on their very best behaviors. They may be less than their usual helpful selves when you ask them to take out the garbage or set the table. They may nag you constantly for more nosh. Relax. It’s okay. Purim is only one day long. You can let them have more nosh than usual. Don’t insist that the two-year old wear his costume if he pre-

fers to take it off. If you see that it’s hard for them to help, you can let it slide. You only need to insist that YOU maintain your calm and your relaxed manner, so that you will be able to deal with the kvetching and fighting that do arise as you focus on going about your pre-planned Purim schedule. That will be the most impactful lesson in selfdiscipline for your brood.

DAVEN AND HAVE FUN

Purim is a day of yeshuos for Am Yisroel. It’s a day that m’sugel for tefillah. Hopefully, if you plan in advance, you’ll be able to insert some davening into your day. Either schedule yourself a half of an hour in your room by yourself davening, or “chap” perakim of Tehillim whenever you find yourself with a few minutes free. • Be prepared. • Remain calm. • Daven. Accomplish these three things and, after Purim, when you finally have a moment to reflect, you will see that you accomplished something extraordinary. You did all the mitzvos of the day while maintaining a calm, relaxed, simcha’diga atmosphere for your family.

OUR FATHER IS WATCHING Rebbetzin Malka Teitelbaum Imagine the world, standing on the precipice of World War II. Hitler ym”sh has risen to power and has issued his anti-Semitic decrees. fetched because the distance between what actually happened in Europe and what we imagined in this scenario is so vast as to seem impossible. And yet, that is exactly what happened in the Purim story. 2,500 years later, when reading the Megillah, the magnitude of the nes is sometimes lost on us. Even though we know the story to be true, once we begin to read about kings, advisors, grand feasts, and royal horses, we tend to enter into a state of suspended disbelief, as if we are reading a fairy tale. By thinking of the story in modern terms – Hitler instead of Haman, Europe instead of Shushan – we can begin to appreciate the magnitude of the miracle. It is no less a nes than the nes of krias yam suf. Okay, so we agree that the miracle was great, but many people can still feel lost as to why the holiday of Purim was added to our calendar. Our history is replete with miracle stories – why was

this one permanently etched into our national calendar? Taking this thought one step further, many people might wonder why holidays should be “added” at all. If the Torah is perfect, and if the Torah already commanded us regarding several yomim tovim, then we might wonder why people – even great people and nevi’im, such as the Anshei Knesses HaGedolah – would add anything to our calendar? The reality is that the Anshei Knesses HaGedolah did, in fact, add Purim to our calendar, so we know for certain that the holiday of Purim is not merely a commemoration of a one-time event. If the Anshei Knesses HaGedolah added Purim to our calendar, then it must be relevant to every Jew in every generation – including our generation, and including us. Also, the message of Purim is one that could not have been given over any earlier in our history, as we shall see. What was this message that speaks to us even today,

and that could not have been given to us earlier? The answer will come into clearer focus when we step back and look at the Purim story in the context of our history. The story of Purim took place during the seventy year period after the churban of the first Bais HaMikdash. After the churban, we began to lose everything. As the decades unfolded, the galus was growing in force. Sensing that a deep and destructive darkness was engulfing the Jewish people, the Anshei Knesses HaGedolah was formed. The Anshei Knesses HaGedolah was an assembly of 120 of our nation’s greatest leaders, including the members of the Sanhedrin, and including many of what remained of the last of our nevi’im – Mordechai HaTzaddik among them. These great men came together during a short period of history beginning just before the building of the second Bais Hamikdash and ending soon after. The door was closing on our “direct line” with Hashem, and they hurried to issue protective takanos and gezeiros that were intended to hold Klal Yisrael together through the long galus, until the coming of Moshiach. Among other achievements, they formulated the text of the Shemoneh Esrei, formalized the calendar, and sealed the Tanach to further inclusions, because the end of prophecy during the time of Bayis Sheini meant that no more writings could be

written with nevuah from Hashem. Right during this period of time, when our direct line to Hashem was slowly being severed, and just as we began to feel orphaned from our Father, the story of Pu-

even today. Where are all the big miracles? When you read the Chumash, grandiose nisim abound. Water turned to blood, the sea split, mann fell from the sky, the sun stood still, etc. Some people ask, where is Hashem now? Looking at the Purim story, the answer is clear: He is still here with us, and not a drop less than before, but His wonders are clothed in “nature.” Let us look at a moshul that could help clarify this message. A mother was preparing her daughter to walk to school alone. For several weeks, the mother led the daughter by hand, instructing her as they walked. “At

Our history is replete with miracle stories – why was this one permanently etched into our national calendar? rim took place. The message was resounding and clear. Hashem was showing us that even though we were descending deeper and deeper into darkness, He was just as much with us as ever. We may have felt abandoned, but we were not alone. Hashem could and did perform miracles on our behalf on a national level that were just as big as krias yam suf – but the nes was concealed in nature. Thus, the meforshim explain that this is why Hashem’s name does not appear even once in Megillas Esther. This also answers a question that m a n y people ask

this store you go straight, but at that playground you turn.” Finally, the day arrived for the little girl to

note, and in her mother’s beautiful handwriting was a message: “Here you go straight, and at the play-

The mother sent her off with a kiss, and reminded her of the basic instructions. As the girl walked, she felt more and more alone. She was nervous and frightened. When the girl arrived at the store, she could not remember whether she should go straight or turn. As she began to panic, the storekeeper came out and handed her a note. She opened t h e

ground you turn. I am watching over you, and I love you!” The girl was flooded with joy at the realization that her mother was watching over her just as much as ever, even if she couldn’t see her. And from then on, every time the girl passed that store, she was reminded of her mother’s love, and felt that joy anew. At the time of the Purim story, the period of Tanach was coming to a close, and we were being sent off on our own. No more big miracles, no more nevuah. We could no longer speak to, or hear from Hashem directly. Then we found out that Hashem is still watching over us and still saving us just as much now as ever, even if we do not “see” Him. This is a

tremendous cause for celebration. Every time our calendar passes the time of Purim, we are reminded that Hashem is watching over us and loves us, and we celebrate. Hiddenness is the theme of the day; we put on costumes and hide our true selves. Now we can see why the Anshei Knesses HaGedolah instituted this holiday, and why the Purim story could not have taken place any earlier. The point of the holiday is that even though the era of Tanach was coming to a close, and even though Hashem was pushing us out into the darkness alone, He is still with us every step of the way. We had to be entering a state of deep galus for a message like this to be necessary, let alone revealed. The Anshei Knesses HaGedolah realized that the story of Purim was a message from Hashem for Klal Yisroel as we travel deeper into the era of concealment. Megillas Esther is that message, and it was the last sefer to be included in Tanach, just before the Anshei Knesses HaGedolah sealed the Tanach forever. Today, we face what appears to be a very mundane existence. It could seem that Hashem has abandoned us, but all we need to do is look a little deeper to realize He is just as much with us now as ever. May we once again be zoche to see Hashem’s hand openly with the arrival of the geulah shaleimah, b’miheirah v’yameinu.

My Oven, My Friend When you are multitasking it’s great to know that some things do not have to be watched, like my oven cholent, even if the actual cooking time is longer.

A few years ago, Rosh Hashanah — as well as the first and second part of Succos — fell on Thursday and Friday. On erev Rosh Hashanah and erev Sukkos I made cholent, to have it ready for Shabbos. The following Friday, Simchas Torah, found me in a dilemma. I wanted to go to shul, but I knew that davening would finish too late for me to cook cholent when I came home. On a whim, I put all of my cholent ingredients into a foil pan, added water to cover, spiced it as usual, and after covering it tightly with a layer of foil, I stuck it into the oven. When we came home from shul, we were greeted by the heavenly aroma of cholent, done to perfection. I haven’t “cooked” a cholent since. Most foods can be made in the oven. Sometimes, it’s good to have the convenience of being able to cook without tying up flames. If you use disposable baking pans, easier cleanup could also be a factor to consider. When you are multitasking it’s great to know that some things do not have to be watched, like my oven cholent, even if the actual cooking time is longer. Here is some food preparation that can be done in the oven: SAUTED ONIONS: This is not the fastest way to do it, but it’s the cleanest and needs little supervision. Dice or slice onions, add oil, and cover with foil. Bake at 400° for 1-1 ½ hours. A little sugar brings out the flavor of the onions. If you choose to add the sugar, add it after the onions are in the oven for 45 minutes. FARFEL: Place the farfel in a pan with oil, uncovered, at 400° for 10-20 minutes. (You can skip this part if you are using toasted farfel and are short on time). Add boiling water, salt and spices. Cover, return to oven, and allow to bake at 350° for 45 minutes. Nothing happens if you keep it in longer. That’s the beauty of oven cooking; it doesn’t easily burn. GEFILTE FISH: Wrap the frozen roll in foil, and put into a pan that’s half filled with water. Add sugar, salt, and pepper. Cover tightly with foil, and bake at 350° for 2 ½ hours. STUFFED CABBAGE: Using your favorite filling, make the cabbage rolls and line them

44

up tightly in a baking pan. (A foil pan works fine). Mix your tomato sauce with any sweetener and spices of choice. Cover cabbage rolls completely with sauce. Cover pan tightly with foil, and bake at 325-350° for four to five hours. MEATBALLS IN TOMATO SAUCE: can also be done in the oven, though it does take longer than stovetop cooking at 1 ½ to 2 hrs. Don’t throw out your pots yet. You still need them to cook the spaghetti or other pasta. (But if you really want to skip the pots, try Draizy’s Sloppy Joe Inspired Pasta in the Food and Family section.) I also haven’t yet figured out how to cook chicken soup in the oven, and I probably never will. PICKLED MEAT: Any good cut of meat is enhanced by searing before roasting. The usual, often messy, way to sear meat is by rotating it in a heavy pot on the stovetop. Large roasts are awkward to handle. Put the roast in a large pan. Preheat the oven to 300-325° (100 degrees hotter that the roasting temperature). After 1015 minutes, turn the roast and sear the other side. Prepare the roast as per the recipe, reduce the flame, and bake as usual. Poultry, i.e. pickled chicken or turkey could also be done in this method, only heating the oven to 300°. As for cholent, here are some tips: For an extra-special cholent, peel and dice red potatoes on Thursday night. After rinsing and drying them, salt the potatoes and let stand uncovered, overnight. They will turn an unappealing shade of black, but once cooked, they look like regular cholent potatoes, and taste heavenly. Pour off any water that accumulated overnight, and add the potatoes to your regular mix of beans, barley, meat, bones, and spices. (Use a lighter hand on the salt.) If your cholent is parve, add some oil. Put into a deep foil pan, and add water to cover. Cover tightly with foil and bake at 350°, forgetting about it until right before Shabbos. If you use a traditional blech, transfer cholent to a heavy pot. If using a hot tray, it can stay in the pan. NOTE: Do not fill the pan to the top. The barley absorbs the water and expands. Hearty appetite! Ess gezunterheit!

Recap: The dog runs after Tehilla, who falls and cuts her chin. Sara’s home store is very slow, as her house looks dwarfed between two junked houses. The cleaning lady refuses to come this year, and yet Sara won’t consider hiring her next door neighbors, although so many others do. And the issue with Chaim Elazar has been put on the back burner, because Sara can’t find the headspace to deal with him.

Yom Tov is a pause in time. Laden with meaning, this microcosm of the entire world, the entire year, rests in the lap of every moment of every day. Sara rinsed her wood-handled Pesach knife. Through the open window, whose ledge Chaim Elazar had covered in silver foil, she could feel the grass humming with ladybugs and bees, the sun playing between the hairs of grass that straightened their spines now, in the promise of warmth. The savory scent of chicken and potatoes and fried latkes were, for the first time in months, the only scent of cooking that permeated the neighborhood air. The lingering scent of bleach still saturated the kitchen with that special Pesach smell, and water ran between the veins in the silver foil until she wiped it dry. Today, she was truly happy. She felt free. She pulled out the hand mixer and started beating egg whites. She’d do snow kisses, and with the yolks, she’d mix up a batch of macaroons. The beaters started whirring, creating the snow in which it danced. This year was a first. They’d skipped the aisle of all the Pesach goodies, including the chocolate leaves — indisputable king of Pesach foods — and even the ladyfingers. Those things were so expensive. And although she had gotten her kids used to certain traditions, it had simply not been in the budget this year. Their home store — in what was usually its busiest season of the year — had a total of seven customers before Pesach, all of whom tried something new. They made a phone order, calling tentatively, to find out if she fulfilled them. “Why not?” she said. But she quickly realized she should have advertised. In all these years, she’d never once had to advertise, because word of mouth spread quickly. Her husband’s deliveries were a new and innovative service in Monsey back then, and people just came. Not this year, when nobody dared walk through her yard, which she herself best avoided. She should have advertised. Would

it have helped? She got the feeling that clients were disgusted, almost, by her wares, or at least her location. If they could get a stack of new Burlington socks from either a basement on a rundown, garbage-strewn street, or from a store in a mall with nice white shelves and relaxing music, wouldn’t the same green-lined sock wear differently? Until now, convenience had trumped fancy, and good solid service won over variety. Her clients avoided lines and knew they were getting what they needed. But everything was changing. Everything. Monsey itself was changing, and so was her house, her store, her life. When she started out, they were a kollel couple, and Elimelech would ride his Schwinn bike to beis medrash every morning, so she could take the car to work. She worked so that he could learn, and the arrangement was sweet, a simple and clean calculation. Hustling up the ladder in her accounting career, it got harder to be wife, mother, worker, and still human being all together, especially when the responsibility of

And Elimelech understood that, understood that to shine in the areas most important to her life, instead of just dragging through it, Sara deserved support, just as she herself was lending. The first thing they did when their fifth was born, was look for a business to start that would fit into their lives, instead of fitting life around it. Elimelech thought of a delivery service, and after discarding the idea of shoes, food, gardening, and home equipment, they struck on the dry goods idea, because although you could always find dry goods — the community was looking for quality, the goods had long shelf life, never went out of style, and everyone needed them. They didn’t have to shop personally for dry goods and… it just added up perfectly. The business was started with good intentions and had remained that way, a steady trickle of income, until today. They moved, in the interim, because selling in the heart of Monsey had been such a sane decision at that point in the real estate scheme, and had then started a nest egg — a chasunah plan for all the children, and a retirement fund for themselves. It had been a hard move, but the right thing — and while Sara felt some resistance

asked, unless you have good reason to say no. Elimelech had good reasons to say yes. The family, by then, had grown more. The salary, although minimal, came in handy. Sara had gotten to the top of her company, and with Elimelech’s new job, was able to cut her hours, so she could be with her children both when they left for school in the morning, and when they walked off the bus in the afternoon. It had worked perfectly. Until now. Until Kasten not only threatened to sweet-talk her out of her home, but also, indirectly, took off with their store income. And everyone was suffering for it. Even her Pesach traditions. She loved taking her kids to an amusement park on Chol HaMoed. Twice a year, the entire family enjoyed good, solid fun in a kosher environment. Bracha Esther and Chaim Elazar loved those roller coasters designed to suck the very breath from the human chest, and Elimelech would indulge them again and again, going higher, steeper, with more loops, while Sara took the little ones on the Ferris wheel and Merry-Go-Round. But not this year. It was too expensive. Chaim Elazar was happy, almost relieved they weren’t going this year, and that was the saddest part. “I’ll just go learn,” he

Instead of lamenting how far away she was, which she’d been inclined to do in the beginning, she threw her heart into her own home. The kids were happy. Supper was timely, served on cloth. They had game night once a week. And the house, room by room, got showered with her love, and took on her personality: An ornate, granite based lamp on an end table in the dining room. Curtains she found in the home store, that rustled in the wind when the girls’ room window was open. Eventually, with more than twelve years of post-marriage learning under his belt, Elimelech accepted the teaching position he now held. It was time for him, and he had been begged, and with these positions, you say yes when you’re

said, enthusiastically, “and I can play chess with Bracha Esther or Rivky later tonight.” And Sara shook her head no, and caught Elimelech’s eye. This wasn’t okay. “We’re not going to the amusement park this year, it’s true. But the Bronx Zoo is free on Wednesday, and tomorrow we can go either to Rockland Lake, or the beach. And we want you to come with us,” she said, a bit forcefully. Could you force enjoyment, impose relaxation? But how was she supposed to react, when her son was withering away, in his self-imposed holiness? Today she had given him until noon to be in shul, while she prepared supper. Now, she wiped her hands from the sticky mousse and stuck the pan in a low oven. They would come back to snow kisses, hopefully having been caressed by nature, and feeling lighter for it.

Super Simple Suppers

I think this is the column I am most excited to share with you. Here are three deliciously simple suppers that you can pop into the oven and forget about. No pots to scrub, no utensils to rinse — and if you use paper goods — no dishes to wash! These are perfect for this hectic time of year when the last thing we need on our minds is pressure about supper. Enjoy!

1 bag pasta, any shape 1 pound ground meat

2 cups Gefen tomato basil pasta sauce

1. Preheat oven to 350°. Spray a 9x13-pan with cooking spray, and place the ground meat into the pan. Pour the pasta sauce over the meat, and use a fork to crumble the meat. 2. Pour bag of pasta over meat mixture and mix. Pour 4 cups water over pasta and mix again. 3. Cover with two layers of silver foil, and bake for 1 ½ hours.

Do not laugh when you see this ingredient list. Who ever thought three such simple ingredients could turn into something so fabulous? The picture shows spaghetti, but you can really use any pasta shape you want. (It is probably even better if you use a smaller pasta shapes, like spirals, wheels, or elbows)

4 chicken cutlets 1 cup mayonnaise ¼ cup ketchup

1 family pack rippled potato chips 1 bag frozen french fries, defrosted 8 wooden or metal skewers

1. Preheat oven to 375°. Pour the bag of defrosted french fries onto a cookie sheet and season with salt. Stick the cookie sheet into the oven. 2. Meanwhile cut the chicken cutlets into long strips and thread onto a skewer. About half of a chicken cutlet goes onto each skewer. 3. Mix the ketchup and mayo together and place onto a flat plate. Crush the potato chips and place onto another flat plate. 4. Roll the skewered chicken first into the mayo mixture and then into the crushed potato chips. Place the skewers across the top of a 9x13-pan. The edge of each skewer should be resting on the edge of the pan; that way the chicken gets evenly baked on each side and comes out extra crispy. Bake for 20 minutes. 5. Since the fries were defrosted and baked for longer, they should be ready as the same time as the chicken. Serve with lots of ketchup (and napkins)!

This is an extremely kid-friendly supper, and since it uses no pots and takes minimal time and effort, it’s mother-friendly, too!

DARK CUTLETS, RICE, AND VEGGIE SUPPER

This is a break from the standard chicken cutlets. If you dislike dark cutlets, feel free to substitute with regular cutlets. You can just use this recipe as a base, and substitute whichever vegetables you think will work best for your family.

1 ½ cups rice 1 16-ounce bag frozen vegetables of your choice (my personal favorite is the catalina blend by Bodek)

4 dark chicken cutlets, cut into cubes 1 tablespoon oil ¼ cup onion soup mix 2 tablespoons soy sauce 4 cups water

1. Preheat oven to 350°. 2. Combine all ingredients in a 9x13 and cover well. Bake for 2 hours.

RAMAPO POLICE DEPT. and CHAVERIM TAKE NOTE: PURIM TRAFFIC CHANGES

Primary Elections By Ruchel Lebovits

TUESDAY, MARCH 15TH REPUBLICANS

Donald Trump had another huge night. He took home four wins and 215 of the night’s 352 delegates. The biggest victory was in Florida, where he walloped Marco Rubio, the Senator from Florida, 45.7% to 27% and won all of the states 99 delegates. It was a tough night for Ted Cruz. He came in second in Illinois and North Carolina by small margins and Missouri by the slimmest of margins, losing to Trump 40.9% to 40.7%. Because most of the states were winner-take-all-per-district, he ended up with only 51 delegates despite posting really good numbers in most of the states. John Kasich managed to win his home state of Ohio, which carried 66 delegates. If nothing else, it insured him a spot in the race, most probably all the way until the convention. Marco Rubio came in a distant 2nd in Florida and 4th in all four other states. And by the end of the night, he announced that he would suspend his campaign. From a very large group of seventeen candidates, we are now down to the final three. With Donald Trump’s 678 delegates in total, he will need another 559 delegates to secure the nomination. That is close to 60% of the 946 remaining delegates. He still has a long road ahead of him and has not as of yet guaranteed himself the spot of GOP nominee. Among the remaining states, eight contests are scheduled for April, five for May, and the last five are scheduled for June 7th. Chief among them is California, a winner-take-all-per-congressional-district state with a whopping 172 delegates up for grabs. The California race is scheduled for June 7th. So by the looks of it, in the best case scenario, this race will not be decided before the very last election is held. The worst case scenario for the republicans, of course, would be the historical and dreaded brokered convention.

Hillary Clinton went for the full sweep, winning all five contests of the night. She carried Florida 64% to 33%, receiving 133 delegates to Bernie Sanders, who received 65. She won Ohio 56% to 42% with 80 delegates allocated POLLS to her and 62 to Sanders. North Carolina RCP POLL AVERAGES went 54% and 59 delegates to Clinton and 40% and 45 delegates to Sanders. Illinois NATIONAL was a tight 50% to 48%, with Clinton getting TRUMP 35.7 73 delegates and Sanders 70. And again CRUZ 26.7 by the democrats, Missouri was divided by an extremely thin margin. Hillary Clinton RUBIO 18.7 won 49.6% of the vote and Bernie Sanders won 49.4%. The delegates were divided NATIONAL evenly among them with each of them getting 34. So despite Hillary technically CLINTON 52.3 winning all five states, Bernie Sanders has SANDERS 41.3 not been written off just yet and managed

MARCO RUBIO SUSPENDS HIS CAMPAIGN After a disappointing run in his home state of Florida, Marco Rubio announced that he would suspend his campaign for the Republican Party’s nomination for president. In an emotional address to his supporters in Florida, he said, “I ask the American people: do not give in to the fear; do not give in to the frustration.” He continued to say that he’d run “a campaign that is realistic about the challenges we face, but optimistic about the opportunities before us… But after tonight it is clear that while we are on the right side, this year we will not be on the winning side.” In a subsequent press conference, he announced that he would not accept any of the remaining candidates’ offer to be their vice president nor would he run for reelection to the US Senate from the state of Florida, or for the position of Governor. “I’ll be a private citizen in January,” he said.

TUESDAY, MARCH 22 The democrats will be having elections in three states this coming Tuesday: Arizona, Idaho, and Utah. In Arizona, Hillary leads the polls at 50% to 24%. Idaho and Utah are both caucuses which are harder to poll. In both cases, the latest polls are about a month old and have razor thin margins between the two candidates. The republicans will be having two contests in Arizona and Utah. In Arizona, a winner-take-all state with 58 delegates, Donald Trump leads the polls 34 to 21 over Ted Cruz, with Kasich getting 12 percent. In Utah, a state with 40 delegates proportionally divided, Ted Cruz leads with 53% of the poll. Kasich is at 29 and Trump at 11.

THE FAST… In every corner of the world where Achashveirosh reigned The Jews knew they were targeted, the locals not constrained. And on the thirteenth of the month their doom quite legalized— The law was irreversible, their fate well advertised. So when the Queen instructed all the Shushanatic Jews To fast three days and nights for her not one of them refused, As Mordechai instructed them, they followed all his cues. THE INVITATION... When Esther felt the time was right, she went to see the King; She risked her life deliberately; she did the proper thing. Her people were about to die for evil Haman’s sake— Was Esther made a Malkah to checkmate Amalek? The King was glad to see his wife; he was as pleased as punch. Queen Esther asked the king, “Will you and Haman come for lunch?” And when they did, she asked them both to join her on the morrow, When, she promised Achashveirosh, she’d confide her fear and sorrow. ZERESH HAS AN IDEA... While wending his way homeward, Haman spied Queen Esther’s uncle, When Mordechai ignored him, Haman glowed like a carbuncle. His mood was dark, his joy was dimmed, his bile kept rising higher— And all because this upright Jew refused to call him Sire. This was a bone in Haman’s craw, he felt like he was choking An open wound that Mordechai, each time he passed,

kept poking. And Zeresh that devoted wife, could tell he wasn’t kidding. He seethed like a volcano when the Jew refused his bidding. She came up with a brilliant plan to make her Haman happy— They’d raise a gallows to the sky and hang the Jew real snappy! And though the King’s approval was technically still missed, Those Agagites were confident: Build Gallows topped their list. THAT VERY NIGHT: It happened on that very night the King insomniated, He couldn’t sleep at although he was not inebriated. And just to pass the time somehow, until he slept sedately— He had his servants read to him of stuff that happened lately. They read about the treachery of Seresh and of Bigsan And how the Jewish Mordechai hut everything gefixan. The King was thrilled with Mordechai and asked what kind of Glory Was bestowed upon this Patriot who saved his Upper Story? Before the lads could answer, there was heard a sandal scuffing: It was Haman in the courtyard, when he ought to have been shluffing. His gallows plan he’d hoped to share for Majesty’s consent: He thought the stars would favor him, his plan seemed Heaven-sent, But as he entered eagerly, the King then deigned to speak: “What prize to give for loyalty that rises to its peak? Oh Haman, good you happened by, I have an urgent matter— There is a Certain Fellow who deserves at least a platter?” Well, Haman swelled, his buttons popped, he couldn’t feel more mellow; He thought the King was praising him, a most ingenious fellow. So Haman, egotistically laid on a head of steam And answered, (thinking inwardly: Be cool, my man, don’t scream) The king should let this fine John Doe wear garments fully royal

by: J. Mesch And ride the king’s own Arab steed with tinsel decked, and foil. A Pasha, or a Grand Vizier, must lead the melech’s favorite Through all of Shushan publicly so he can fully savor it. And thus the groom to cry, aloud: “Here passes a true Hero The King has glorified this man; compared to him I’m Zero.” He must attract a largish crowd, he can’t be circumspect. Where e’er this fair-haired boy rides, the folks must genuflect. MORDECHAI IS REWARDED: No sooner had he zipped his yap than Haman did regret it. The King commanded: “Mordechai the Jew deserves the credit! Quick, grab him just as you described and have the horse bedighted. And you, my noble minister, will lead him as you cited.” Now Haman turned a purple hue, (the man was way too portly) He thought he’d have an infarct, he’d been assaulted mortally. And so it was and thus it went, the Jew was Elevated By Haman, the Amalekite, who thought as they paraded: “I’ll get you, Mordy by and by —you don’t know how you’re hated. I’ll use those gallows soon and then we’ll see who looks elated.” HAMAN’S DISGRACE: While Haman fulminated thus and planned his wicked vengeance, His hatred burning hot enough to set off fire engines. The duo passed the Hamans’ pied-a-terre, and at the casement One of his graceless daughters with her slops paused in amazement And thinking Haman was bestride, the Jew with reins in hand— She aimed her pail right o’er the rail upon the Jew to land. And fouled instead her father’s head, he reeled and staggered madly. His clothes were drenched, his ego crushed, he needed to bathe, badly! Well, ashen-faced and mortified, that villain slunk off humbled. At home his wife depressed him more; she saw his great-

ness crumbled, And while his friends consoled him trading vulgar imprecations A runner from the palace came with urgent invitation. IN WHICH HAMAN GETS HIS DUE: Queen Esther had a spread prepared, with wine the featured viand, Each rare and costly vessel chosen with the king in mind. And he, in spirits high, again told Esther, his beloved, “I’ll grant your every wish, my Queen, ask me for jewels or kavod. Whatever be your heart’s desire is yours for now and ever!” And Esther answered finally, “Please save me from the kever! My people have been doomed to die; to be erased completely.” She said it with sincerity; she said it very sweetly. But still she said it poignantly, and several times repeatedly: “A Wicked Man has paid a sum in order just to butcher The nation that Amalek hates and never ceased to mutcher. Remember Royal Husband Dear, this sociopath will slaughter And finish all of us, including Avichail’s daughter.” The King was roused to anger and he asked in towering rage, “Which varlet dares to harm my Queen, and who has set the stage?” Ups Esther loud and bell-like clear, “Its Haman who’s my foe! He hates my Uncle Mordechai, because he’s not a shmoe! He means us all to be filleted, the man has no compassion.” The King, outraged, and slightly stoned, went out, in tipsy fashion, While Haman left alone with her, did beg Queen Esther’s

pardon. His timing quite unfortunate, as just then from the garden His Majesty returned to find his minister collapsing Upon the couch where Esther lay, she wasn’t really napping. That tore it: for the rest, let’s say, Haman was in hot water. He’d torment Jews no longer, thanks to Mama Rachel’s daughter, And just as he was merciless, the king gave him no quarter; They hanged him high, it must have been a real surprise for him to die— They hung him from the very tree that Haman meant for Mordechai! VENAHAPOCH... Now, Haman’s end was not enough to save the Jews of Shushan An edict had been signed to law, and read out in their lushan. So Esther interceded and got Mordechai permission To write and seal another writ, an up-to-date edition. Then Jews were able legally —to fight and mount defenses Against those bent on killing them, they later took a census: In Shushan many hundreds died, at the hands of local Yidden, And every one of Haman’s sons, yes, ten of them, no kiddin’ Were wiped out at one instant by The Hand that remained Hidden And strung up high for passersby to see and comprehend, “Machoh Timche Es Amalek,” until their final end.

THEN... His Majesty the mighty Shah, Achashveirosh king of Kush And Continental Hodoo gave Mordechai rechush And installed him as his viceroy, the second in command And there was peace and plenty for the Jews across the land... LAYEHUDIM… And so each year we read about them all in a megillah And just to thank Hashem again, we make a big gedillah Shalach manos, wine, a seudah, and matanos l’evyonim— Because Yad Hashem delivered us and crushed our evil sonim.

BEHIND THE MASK Who hides there Behind the mask Of strength- a painted face Though gentle eyes, so like a fawn Look back at us with grace

Let’s not be fooled By all the masks Worn by people whom we meet Looks deceive, so let’s not judge One walking down the street

Who hides there Behind that mask Plastered smile from ear to ear A broken heart with spirits dashed Seeks direction, hope, and care

Let’s lift that mask Embrace the world Casting negativity aside Forget the costumes, brands, and styles And look for what’s inside

Who hides there Behind the mask A prince dressed oh, so fine But lives a life of poverty There is no extra dime

Let’s unwrap our masks Of pride and hate Have courage and be bold Be kind, be warm, be positive And reveal our hearts of gold

Who hides there Behind the mask She looks like Miss Perfection Though deep inside churn thoughts of dread Can’t look at her reflection

When we lift up That mask of ours It enables us to see Beneath the masks that people wear To look beyond the “me”

Who hides there Behind the mask Lift it off that face Let the Neshama’s glow emerge From its very special place For hidden under masks of life Different color, size, or land Are thirsty souls who’re yearning for Torah, Mitzvahs, HaShem’s command

FUN FACTS •

Laughter is a universal language. You don’t need to have the same tongue as someone to reach out to them with a smile and laughter.

Laughter is an involuntary response. You often can’t control it, and you definitely can’t force it! You can emit something that sounds like laughter, but you’re not tricking your brain whatsoever. (And you’re probably not tricking those around you either.)

Oh, the joys of being young! In studies that looked at laughter in adults versus children, it was found that kids tend to laugh about three times more than adults.

Do you ever find yourself laughing when you really feel like crying? That occurs because laughing and crying provides the same kind of physiological stress release. Holding back tears doesn’t allow the body to release the anxiety, so the energy gets discharged through laughter.

Does it really take more muscles to frown than to smile? No, it seems that the opposite may be true.

BENEFITS OF LAUGHTER

Here’s why you should laugh, and laugh often: •

Laughter is a pretty good workout! When you laugh, you are strengthening muscles in your face, stomach, and diaphragm, and actually burning calories. Laughing is good for your memory, and makes you sleep better. • Frequent and whole-hearted laughter builds the body’s immune system by lowering stress levels and fighting off things that might be harmful for us. • Laughing can create an instant bond between people. When we laugh together, we feel a connection to those people and it alleviates some of the social stress that being around new people might create. • Not a coffee drinker? Laughing shortly after you wake up can have similar effects to drinking a cup of coffee. Try it and notice how refreshing it feels.

Why do the ten sons of Haman get hanged in one breath in the Megillah? In order to ensure that the Supreme Court does not issue a restraining order in the meantime.

A man walked into a local bank in a heimishe community to make a deposit. To his surprise, there were two separate lines — one for men and other for women. He turns to the man in front of him in the line and said, “What service to the heimishe community. Separate lines for men and women!” The man turns to him and says, “Oh well, our line is for deposits only and that line is for withdrawals!”

WHAT TRIGGERS LAUGHTER? •

A joke? A comedy? Actually, what triggers laughter most is simply being surrounded by other people. You laugh 30 times more just by being with others.

What else makes you laugh, is when other people laugh. “Laugh and the whole world laughs with you” is more than just an expression. Laughter is contagious, something I’m sure you’ve all already experienced.

Knowing the person who is telling a joke will also make you laugh a lot more than just a random person saying a joke. Laughter has a distinctive pattern. It rarely occurs in the middle of a sentence. Instead, laughter tends to occur at the end of sentences or during a break in speech. The average person laughs about 13 times a day. It’s odd that very few of those times are due to a joke or an intentional action. We usually laugh at chance happenings or things that were never intended to be funny.

Menachem needs his tallis dry cleaned. He sends it to the best dry cleaner in town, Ho Chi Wung Cleaners. They tell him to come back in a week. When he comes back they give him the bill, which says $25.00. “Twenty five dollars to clean a tallis?!” Menachem reads astonished. “No, no, no!” replies the dry cleaner. “Five dollars to clean the tallis, and twenty dollars to take out all those knots!”

Why is the Shabbos before Purim called Shabbos Zachor? Because that’s the last thing you’ll remember for a long time!

HOW TO STOP YOURSELF FROM LAUGHING AT INAPPROPRIATE TIMES •

Think of something sad or depressing.

Try pinching yourself, or causing some other strong physical sensation, such as biting your inner cheek.

Distract yourself. Think about something else that uses all your brain capacity, like counting from 50 to 0, doing the multiplication table in your head, or mentally traversing your block and thinking about each person who lives there.

Try reverse psychology on yourself. By telling yourself, “This is funny! Laugh some more,” you end up finding whatever you were laughing at less funny.

If nothing works, and you let out a bark of laughter, cover it up by pretending to cough. Cleaning your teeth (which can cover up a smile, and forces you to keep your mouth open) also works, although I’m not sure if it is more polite than laughing!

If all fails, excuse yourself and leave the room.

A man who felt he was the strongest around offered a challenge. He would squeeze a lemon until all the juice ran into a glass, and anyone who could squeeze out one more drop of juice would win $1,000. Many people tried this, weightlifters, longshoremen, and warriors, but nobody could do it. One day a scrawny little man wearing thick glasses and dressed in a polyester suit came in and said in a high, squeaky voice, “I’d like to try the challenge.” After the laughter had died down, the man said, “OK,” grabbed a lemon and squeezed away. He then handed the wrinkled remains of the rind to the little man. The crowd’s laughter turned to silence as the man clenched his fist around the lemon and six drops fell into the glass. As the crowd cheered, the man paid the $1,000, and asked the little man, “How did you do that? You lift weights, or what?” The man replied, “No, I’m a fundraiser.”

7 “Don’t use hands!!!”

It’s hard to count how many times I half-screeched, half-cried that overused command — just today. And it’s not Nachman who’s using hands. It’s sweet, innocent Suri, who can do no evil. Who always, by contrast, is the wellbehaved, charming child. Suri can’t hurt a fly. But she can hurt Nachman. And she does, every day, every hour, almost every minute. Even while wringing my hands in frustration, I understand her. Suri is doing what I am fighting back in the confines of my heart. She has declared the war that I am repressing with blood and tears. When Nachman howls or throws or jumps or kicks, Suri rushes to attack him. She slaps him until her own palms must hurt. I yelp, grab Suri or Nachman, and restrain my own arm from reaching out and spanking…anyone. I go back to (try to) wash the dishes, but just as I’m soaping the first spoon, two voices are bawling in unison. “Stop it!” I bark. I haul Suri into her room, so she might miraculously busy herself with her markers. It works. For two-and-a-half minutes. Nachman is scribbling on the floor with

ADHD has revealed itself in all its glory. It is a web of problems, not an isolated issue. Suri’s precious markers. The howling reaches a crescendo. I charge into Suri’s room and find her sitting on Nachman’s back and pummeling him for all she’s worth. “STOP IT!” It is one of the supernatural phenomena in this world that I don’t despair of screaming the clichéd “stop it” or “don’t use hands” when they don’t work. They didn’t work even once. I am helpless. I cannot punish Suri — I sympathize with her too much. I can’t punish Nachman — his low dopamine level is not his fault. Watching my two children in a dangerous brawl without the means to stop it is a scary, humbling, and tearful experience. Even when the Ritalin kicks in, Suri’s volcano still erupts. To her, Nachman is still that bothersome little brother (whose power is not so little) and she won’t forgive and forget so fast. Suri is suffering from Nachman’s behavior and Nachman is suffering the consequences of her suffering. It’s a cycle that seems can never end. When the brood is finally sleeping for the night, I often collapse on the couch and cry. All those tears that I held in with mighty force each time I untangled Suri’s and Nachman’s hands now escape. I want calm and serenity. I want it so much, but nothing I’m doing is getting me there. ADHD has revealed itself in all its glory. It is a web of problems, not an isolated

issue. There is the disorder itself, and then the outgrowths. The child, and his siblings. Yet the challenge is even deeper: How do I teach my child to tolerate her brother’s behavior when I myself have not mastered that skill? How can I pull back my child’s hand from striking when my own hand has done it sometimes? Yet I still have to try. In calmer moments, I admit that my oft-thrown reprimands are doing more harm than good. It is time for positive reinforcement. Aryeh and I decide on a

After a week in which she earned at least fifteen stickers, she will get a small prize. And after three weeks of good behavior, she’ll earn a special outing just with Mommy. I wait for a moment not yet hijacked with frustration, when Nachman is out “helping” Aryeh on some errands, and I sit down for a heart-toheart talk with my six-yearold.

Nachman bothers. He makes her angry. I understand. But we can’t use hands. Tell me when he bothers you; don’t hurt him. When you do, you’ll get a sticker. Suri’s eyes shine. A contest! Just for me and her. We prepare a chart with the words “Secret Contest” on top — and that makes it all worth it. It doesn’t take any fancy artistic abilities, not even a one-dollar expense. Just some encouragement, pen and paper, and some plain stickers got Suri on board. And the best is yet to come: a special outing with Mommy! Suri can’t believe her good luck. I’ve learned some lessons in life well: not every good thing costs money. Time spent together cannot be priced. As soon as the contest begins, I’m sorry I didn’t start earlier. Oh, how I’ve underestimated the Power of the Sticker. There are ups and downs. Suri is hitting, but much less frequently. I keep reminding her, brandishing the pack of stickers when tension runs high. Good “PR” is the most important tool, I learn. “Look how Suri’s talking nicely!” and “Suri got four stickers today!” are the mantras I keep singing. I invest real effort — much more than Suri does, but isn’t that the secret of good training? And I, too, am gaining most. A happy(ier) home. What a blessing.

Positive Parenting Techniques for Stressful Situations “I wish you were a toy that required batteries so I can take them out,” one brother told his little sister who was bothering him. Some days, I wish I can stop my child’s behavior until I can figure out how to deal with it. With so many discipline techniques, it’s hard to know what to try. Now it’s your turn to figure out which of these positive choices fit for you and your family.

1. USE CHOICES: When you give your child choices, instead of commands where they can use a “no” response, you are less likely to end up in the typical tantrum pattern. This tends to avoid “no” for an answer, as well as complete defiance. The choice empowers the child. Of course, make sure that you are okay with both choices. Do not give a child a choice you will not abide by, since this will make you unreliable in his eyes.

2. PLAY DETECTIVE: Have you ever experienced a toddler’s grating

bedtime cry? Well, sometimes I take a minute and think: Why is my daughter crying? One time, I returned to her room and smelled that she needed to be changed. Another time, after a full day of refusing most food, she threw up. On a different occasion, I realized she was plain hungry. I never regret stopping and thinking: What can be causing this behavior? Why is your child acting out? Are there times of the day or specific activities when challenging behavior is most likely to occur? Are there environmental conditions that may be a factor? (e.g., temperature, noise). Or can any of these circumstances be a factor: illness, change in diet, teething, hunger, crowds, fatigue? See if you can find the source of the tantrum before jumping to conclusions. Circumstances influence behavior, so when you examine outside factors, you can prevent many discipline issues.

3. BE CONSISTENT: Make sure you are consistent in your discipline. Your child needs to know what is and isn’t accept-

able. And they judge that by what was and wasn’t okay yesterday and the day before. If they’re not getting a consistent message, they do not know how to behave. That can leave your child feeling confused and insecure. Try to keep to the same schedule every day. That means having regular nap times, mealtimes, and bedtimes, as well as times when your child is free to have fun. When you do have to make a change, it helps to warn your child in advance. This can prepare her for a slightly different routine, and hopefully prevent a scene. For a major change, such as a move or a new sibling, a simple homemade book that

Additionally, I give her empty recyclables — cheese, egg and cereal cartons. Now, I can actually cook supper. Young children are born with a healthy curiosity, and they need the freedom to safely explore their surroundings to discover what their world is all about. It’s important not to inhibit this natural curiosity by constantly reprimanding your child for touching things around the house. Childproofing reduces stress for both parents and children. Your child won’t have to hear “no” all the time, and you will have more peace of mind knowing that he’s not getting into things he shouldn’t. If you use the word “no” sparingly, your child will be more likely to pay attention when you do say it.

If they’re not getting a consistent message, they do not know how to behave. the child can reread will give the child an understanding of what’s occurring.

4. CREATE A YES ENVIRONMENT: My daughter, like most toddlers, would wreck the kitchen as I cooked supper. She would unpack cabinets, crash pots, and then whine for me to pick her up. First, I locked two cabinets with breakables so I don’t have to worry for her safety. I created a special toy cabinet, and got her a set

5. FIND A SUBSTITUTE: During the “witching hour,” if my child’s behavior starts getting to me, I try taking her to a different room, opening the door to the hallway, or going out for a walk. Some fresh air always seems to help. Diversion is a great tool to

use. Children have a short attention span, and you can use this to your advantage. You may be able to distract them from whatever they are fussing about. Instead of giving in, find something new to do or talk about that might interest your child. I call it “making use of natural resources.”

6. STAY CALM: It’s hard to stay calm when you’re in the grocery store, looking at your child who’s screaming on the floor, and trying to ignore the stares of the shoppers around you. Losing control will quickly escalate an already stressful situation. Give yourself some time to compose yourself before responding. Otherwise, you will vent your own anger, which will leave you feeling guilty. The Torah teaches that we should never hit a child in anger. Remember: We are in this together. Nobody’s perfect, but we can all try to be better. And by using positive discipline techniques, I’m sure you will succeed!

LAUNDRY ROOM

PREP LIST: Aahhh the joys and glory of Purim! Women lament all the time, • Garbage bags that it is not a yom tov for women. I say, the day after is custom-made • Gloves for us. I mean, who doesn’t relish the cleanup and the washing? Okay, • Shmattes (microfiber cloths okay, me neither, don’t worry. However, it has to be done, and aside capture dust very well) from asking your teenagers to help, (let me know how that works out • Broom, shovel, mop, duster, on this particular day) you will be the one to do it. The Purim spirit vacuum cleaner is still in full swing then. However, Help! This year it’ll be on a Friday. • Regular cleanser Some tips to make the transition into Shabbos a bit easier: • Floor cleaner If possible, use Thursday night to sort the mishloach manos. All the • Hooks chocolates keep for yourself, of course. (I know that’s pretty obvious, • Bins/containers but it felt good throwing it out there. See? It totally is a women’s yom • Step stool tov after all.) This year, I plan to make a brachos party on Shabbos afternoon for the neighborhood children, and use all the nosh. I know they ate plenty on Purim, but this is “structured eating” and a great opportunity to help people that need yeshuos. Leave the heavy duty cleaning for the morning, but try to clear the counters before heading to bed. You’ll wake up in a much calmer frame of mind. Have a wonderful, relaxing Shabbos!

WASHER & DRYER

You can start by running your washing machine with detergent and white vinegar. Run one full cycle on “hot” while the machine is empty. It will sanitize and clean away any soap scum.

The laundry room collects lots of dust, so make sure you drink up; it’s a hard job. “Emunah Daily,” on Chazak practically guides my day. It’s an amazing five-minute chizuk shmooze. 845-3566665. Press 4.

• Empty the lint from your dryer. Using a damp cloth, wipe around the interior. • While the machine is going you can dust your ceiling corners and wipe down the walls. Give yourself cleanup time as long as the washing machine is working. • When the cycle is done, take a break. • Whether you have a huge walk-in laundry room (every Yiddishe mama’s’ dream) with built in cabinets, or just a stackable machine in your apartment, the key element is to keep your clothing clean and the room clutter-free. It is one of those rooms that “stuff” just gathers out of nowhere. Laundry is a chore, simply because when you think you’re done, you’re starting all over again. If you keep this room or closet neat and everything has its place, doing laundry will become much less of a stress. • Empty your cabinets, or shelves, and dust with damp cloth.

2 LAUNDRY BASKETS AND HAMPERS Wipe plastic ones with cleanser. I love using Mr. Clean in this room. The fresh smell spurs me on! • Machine wash fabric laundry hampers. There are quite a few different options out there for laundry. I actually prefer the singlecompartment hard plastic ones as they clean the best and are the easiest to maneuver in the laundry room. I went through so many, because I wanted pretty ones, until I settled for the simple good ol’ basket. The picture on the right are the ones I enjoy most. There are similar ones that are stackable.

3 IRONING BOARD AND IRON

4 DRYING RACKS

Remove the cover from the board and machine wash. Wipe down the rest. • Pour out any water left in the iron. Make a paste with baking soda and water and spread it on the iron’s plate. Let sit for two minutes. Wipe with damp cloth. Wet a Q-tip and dip it into the steam vents. Refill the iron halfway full with water. Turn the iron on its highest setting. Steam iron a clean cloth for 2-3 minutes.

Pottery Barn $69

Wipe with damp cloth. If you’re thinking about purchasing one, try the type you can mount on the wall. Or one that folds as flat as possible.

ROOM

Use bins for everything you keep in the laundry room. (Detergent, dryer sheets, spot cleaner, mesh bags etc.) For example: Lint machine/ roller • Put all the clothes that need mending in one bin. Next to the sewing Stacks and supplies Stacks • Try not to keep extra stuff in this room that doesn’t pertain to washing/mending. $122 • I put up hooks everywhere! For a few dollars, you can change your room into a neat haven. • Windex the windows, and wipe down sills and blinds. • Clean behind the washer and dryer before doing your floors. Oh, the happy little socks you’ll find!

• Generally, tiles are in the laundry room. The best cleaning product I’ve tried is Bona Stone Tile and Laminate Floor Cleaner. Rest assured that Pine Sol, Mr. Clean, and all the rest work well too! • Quick tip: Vinegar and baking soda are your best friends for homemade cleaning products. WHAT TIME OF DAY DO YOU HEAR MEGILLAH?

I like to be up for the vasikin minyan, and hear the laining then. Pretty early; I have to get the day rolling! I’m still busy with/exhausted from last minute mishloach manos packaging until mid-morning, so it's hard to get out until late. I have a relative that lains at home for the family later in the day.

WHAT DOES YOUR SCHEDULE ON PURIM LOOK LIKE?

Basically relaxed, now that everyone comes to me! It’s an enjoyable, fastpaced, fun day of hopping around to all of our loved ones. I spend my entire Purim in the car, traveling the tristate area, visiting nearly everyone we know. It's a quiet day; I wish it had more action.

LADIES, WHAT KIND OF DAVENING DO YOU DO ON PURIM?

WHO CHOOSES THE COSTUMES THAT YOUR FAMILY WILL WEAR ON PURIM? Mother, according to her vision/budget

They are custom ordered or sewn to match a theme.

I wake up early and get in a full Shacharis, being unwilling to miss this golden opportunity I try to work in extra Tehillim into my day, along with at least a full Shacharis

The children get to choose their costumes. After all, it’s their main Simchas Purim!

The day is very overwhelming, but I try to daven my own tefillos as I run from place to place, in addition to brachos I wish I would get to daven!

Some reminders on how to keep the day fun and calm

Take it easy!

Just enjoy, daven, and tap into the power of this spiritual day!

Prepare everything in advance to have an enjoyable Purim. We deliver mishloach manos which go to close locations in a wagon, so we don’t have to carry them.

Keep calm and carry on.

When I hear the laining early, I find that my day is so much smoother.

Have your mishloach manos ready before Purim. Make sure your family eats a healthy and nutritious breakfast.

Stay positive

Have kids deliver mishloach manos. Turn on some

Keep calm, even if things are not working out the way you planned them.

lively music, and make a big family seudah.

I wake up early, and drop off mishloach manos at everyone’s door. Afterwards, I hear the Megillah, eat the seudah, and take my children to their teachers and rebbeim. It makes the day a lot calmer.

Purim Tips for Teachers, Morahs, and Rebbeim:

pass! Try to think of a friend your child can send mishloach manos to who might not get from others.

Wake up early and prepare in advance.

Be easygoing. Giving mishloach manos to teachers before Purim makes the day a lot calmer.

The house will be messyaccept it. It will

Organize lists for all the children and yourself. Try to send mishloach manos for teachers to school, leaving one or two for Purim day.

Keep young children on their regular schedule. Make sure everyone eats a good breakfast

Put away nosh for after Purim. You’ll have calmer kids who will be able to enjoy their loot longer.

Keep it simple, and remember what the focus should be. These are special mitzvos - enjoy them and keep the peer pressure out!

Eat something normal before eating the junk.

Try to stay focused. The mishaps don’t make the day.

Rebbeim: Most participants of our survey give between fifty and one hundred dollars to Rebbeim, while some give a little less than that. The comparison of those who give closer to $100 and those who give closer to $50 was quite even.

Organize a list before Purim of who each child will deliver mishloach manos to, and it will avoid waste of time and arguments.

Teachers: Majority of participants of our survey give twenty dollars to teachers. A few give ten, fifteen, or eighteen, and some give larger tips of $25, $30, $50, and going up to $100.

Many readers decide on the dollar amount based on how challenging their child is and how devoted the teacher or rebbe is.

Real Estate

The Title That Almost Wasn’t (pun intended)

by Ann Zeilingold Achashveirosh decided to give Haman’s house to Mordechai. Now, Achasveirosh was really not such a generous king. He never gave anything completely and wholeheartedly. For instance, he only gave to Esther up to half the kingdom. To Mordechai, he only was willing to give enough for him to be able to qualify for a mortgage, something like a gift of equity for the down payment, but Mordechai had to get a mortgage for the balance. It was a difficult mortgage to structure. When Mordechai called me to discuss his mortgage options, I had a few questions. Firstly, the “donor” had to be a relative. This was fine. Since Esther had just publicly announced her relationship with Mordechai, Achashveirosh was related through marriage. The next issue was the title. Haman was killed by Achasveirosh’s decree, as were all of his children. The title company refused to insure title until the estate went through all the proper legal channels and it was established unequivocally that Achasveirosh was the owner of record at the time of the conveyance of title to Mordechai. Now, Mordechai wanted to close in 30 days. From a mortgage standpoint, that was okay, but we cannot close until “Clear Title” is received. I told Mordechai to discuss this with his lawyer. The buyer’s lawyers usually order the title report, and in this case, it needed to be ordered early to iron out any issues that came up. I venture to say, it may have taken a royal decree to straighten out the mess. Mordechai’s attorneys had their work cut out for them. Now, Mordechai was being sold the house with all of its contents. In a real estate transaction, when contents are included in the contract of sale, the mortgage company only will lend on real property, not contents — so we would most likely have to deduct the value

96

/ T HE MONS E Y V IE W

I venture to say, it may have taken a royal decree to straighten out the mess.

of the contents from the contract price. This may have put Mordechai in a bind, since he had been a poor man prior to Achasveirosh giving him the house and wealth of Haman; he literally lived wearing sack cloth. He didn’t have a deep bank account to supplement the cost of the contents. A good suggestion would be for Achasveirosh to gift the contents separately from the house. That would solve this problem. Even though the house was valuable, Mordechai didn’t have a two-year job history. You see, when Esther went to live in the king’s palace, Mordechai stopped going to work. Instead he sat in the courtyard of the palace. His employer stopped paying him because he was a no show. He didn’t even get a kollel check, because the kollel was a few months behind, so the checks were sporadic and irregular. (This still happens today.) How would I be able to qualify Mordechai for a mortgage? I came up with an idea. Since Achashveirosh just gave him the important job of viceroy to the king, I would be able to use his new current pay, as long as he didn’t close for six months, because I would need

a six-month history on the job after such a long absence. I would need Mordechai to prove to me that he had worked for two years consecutively prior to his sabbatical from the job. That, along with a compelling explanation letter, would work. The underwriter approved the income after reading the whole megillah that Mordechai wrote as an explanation of what happened and as to why he had been out of work. The only item that I was unsure of was the appraisal. An appraisal is an opinion of value. The appraiser compares this home to other like homes, to substantiate the market value. If a home is larger or more elaborate than every other home that had sold, it’s a possibility that it would not appraise. If the home has an amenity that is unique and it differentiates itself from other homes, or if it has blight on it, the appraiser may possibly find it very difficult to come up with the fair market value of the home. Haman’s house had a few issues. The main one was that it had a gallows on it. This was very morbid and certainly unique. It wasn’t just any gallows, but the tallest gallows ever built. It was also a functioning gallows. It wasn’t just for show. Haman and his ten sons had just been hanged on it. The appraiser didn’t know if it was considered a commercial or mixed use property. The Certifi-

cate of Occupancy didn’t mention a gallows. Possibly it was illegally constructed, and therefore an illegal usage of the property. So we were in a real bind. If we showed a royal decree allowing the use and the legality of this illegally constructed gallows, then this property would be deemed commercial and Mordechai would have to apply for a different loan — a commercial loan. According to Shushan’s premier appraiser, Robert Adler, he said he would appraise the property subject to the removal of the gallows. Mordechai’s attorney had to speak to the building department. Maybe they issued a temporary use permit for the gallows and this permit was only for the current owner. In such a case, we would have been okay with our residential mortgage on the property if the gallows is removed prior to the closing date. If you read the Megillah, you know that once again, FM Home loans came through, and we closed this mortgage loan. If you know of anyone who needs mortgage assistance please let us know.
