In the Purim edition you featured My Oven, My Friend and Draizy’s easy prePesach suppers as well. I really enjoyed the ideas presented in both articles, and although I already use some of the ideas, I was thrilled to read of others that I haven’t tried yet. Having said that, I am concerned about all the aluminum that gets into our foods by using so many pans, so often. In P. Samuels’ article she pointed out so many shortcuts in food preparation, which means that much more pan use - and therefore even more of the harmful aluminum getting into our food. If you use steel baking pans, then obviously the problem of aluminum isn’t applicable. However, most people I know use disposable pans. It is for this reason that I appeal to everyone reading this to take precautionary actions. Firstly, use aluminum pans only if you line it with parchment paper. Secondly, a great investment for your family would be to purchase a set of bakeware in various sizes which also bakes more evenly and is financially worth it as well. If you are unaware as to the harmful effects that aluminum has on our health then please, The Monsey View, let’s have

The service I received a week before Purim was so heartwarming and amazing; I wanted to share it. I was sick with the flu, and was unable to prepare mishloach manos. A call to Rugelach Bakery at Hatzlacha solved it all. I ordered jumbo black and white cookies. It wasn’t just the cookies that I received — it was the service! Rugelach custom-colored the icing to match my theme, packaged each in a container that they gave me at no charge, and personalized the cookies with edible markers. Your Voice SCHOOL IS OUT... ALREADY?
I feel it is a must to publicly address an important issue that applies only to the Monsey community. Every erev Pesach, school for the younger grades finishes a full week before yom tov, unlike all the other communities such as Monroe, Williamsburg, and Boro Park, which finish two days before yom tov. So here is the big question: We are the same mosdos, the same Yidden, and share the same calendar. Why then do only Monsey schools end a full week before yom tov? Yes, we truly appreciate all that teachers do, and yes, we do understand that teachers work very hard all year taking care of our precious children. We also understand that Pesach is coming, and they have to prepare for yom tov. However, I am here to represent all of us office secretary mommies (and we are quite a number); allow me to explain our schedule. We all work until a few hours before bedikas chometz (some of us on erev Pesach too), and yes, some worked until two hours before Megilla laining. We punch in Isru Chag at 9:00 AM (believe it or not!); actually also on Shushan Purim and on fast days. When we accepted our jobs, we signed contract, fully aware of our Yiddish yom tov schedule and what it entails. I am sure teachers signed that contract too. I am wondering: What do teachers in all other communities do? How do they get to yom tov? So dear administrators,

principals, or whoever is in charge of this: Please remember that we parents are paying our full monthly tuition ehrlichly, and it’s definitely not yasher to cut school like that just because Pesach is next week. Pesach doesn’t come by surprise. We all check our calendars and plan accordingly. Yes, we thank you for your generous fun school offer. However, you do charge an additional cost — which is almost impossible to shoulder at this time the year when everyone’s bank account is dried out and Kimcha D’Pischa is working overtime. You are also aware that many of us B”H are blessed with more than one or two children. This forces us parents to send in the fun school charge. Feel free to call it “extra tuition for no reason.” (It’s enough that we pay 12 months tuition for 9 months of school.) If you don’t want to employ your staff so close to yom tov, perhaps you can find high school volunteers, just like you do in fun school. We love our children dearly and are not looking to just get them out of the house. However, we fail to understand or fathom why school is closed when it shouldn’t be. And to top it off, why there’s an extra charge for keeping our children in school for those days. I know it may be late for this year, as the Pesach schedule is already arranged, but on behalf of Monsey parents, we would like to see the same arrangements as the other

The other day I had to take a bus to the city with my four-year-old. As I walked down Maple Avenue, I stopped at one bus stop and found it littered with garbage and even objects that belong in a Diaper Genie. We decided to walk on. At the second bus stop we were able to sit down and my fou- year-old commented that, “THIS is a Yiddishe bus stop, because it’s clean!” Even my four-year-old was able to understand that as Jewish people, we have the obligation to maintain our surroundings in a respectable fashion. Granted, there were no garbage cans in the first bus stop, but perhaps people can carry thin plastic bags in their pocketbooks, in which to store garbage until they have a normal place to throw it out. We are, after all, always making an impression with everything we do. Let’s make it a positive one. R.D.

I look forward to each issue, and really enjoy it. I would like to point out something to your readers that I think is very important. Monsey is, Baruch Hashem, growing, and there are more cars on the road
Your Voice — especially now before yom tov. Many drivers do not know the rules for a left turn when they are on a two-way street that has a traffic light, and they therefore end up waiting — sometimes even through more than one red light before they turn. According to chapter five of the NY State drivers’ manual, if the light is green, you should go into the intersection (whether or not there is a left turn signal). If you cannot turn due to oncoming traffic, you should wait in the intersection (with the wheels straight) until you can make the turn. If the light turns red while you are in the intersection, the other cars have to wait until you make the turn. Hopefully this will make for easier trips for all of us. May we all have a kosher and freilichen Pesach. Also, please remember the law requires you to signal a turn or lane change with your turn lights or hand signals at least 100 feet before the turn. Your Voice and those who have lived here for very long and want to maintain life as they know it. Am I only the only one in the middle ground? As a homeowner that was blessed to buy right before the prices became inflated, I am actually thrilled to see the prices rising, but not fond of the huge houses going up around me. I am thankful that my property value is steadily rising, but when I knock down my old house I will probably build a large single-family home with a small rental; a virtual rarity on my changing block. I think everything comes down to attitude. I’ve got my daled amos to preserve my sanity, but on someone else’s daled amos — I’m happy to let them do as makes them happy, even if that means garbage blowing onto my lawn and my onceupon-a-time quiet house next door, now home to roughly 20 noisy children… It can be frustrating, if I choose to think into it. But I’m happy for my brethren that have a chance to live life in Monsey, even if they are changing the scene. If I were locked into a Brooklyn apartment with two closetsized bedrooms and ten kids squished into any empty inch when it’s time to bed down, wouldn’t I also dream of a larger house? I think it all boils down to thinking of the other side, and trying to make the person with the other viewpoint comfortable. After all, we are all family, and shouldn’t we care about our siblings? The year was 1997, and I was getting married. As time came closer to my chasunah, I had trouble finding a gown. I did not want to buy one, since it would normally cost well over five hundred dollars. I thought that was too expensive to spend on a wedding gown. Since I was living in New York at the time, I went to gemach after gemach after gemach. However, I couldn’t find something I liked. I moved back home to California a month before my chasunah, without a gown, in order to help my mother prepare for the wedding. The Sunday after I arrived, my father was driving us someplace and my mother happened to see a storefront advertising wedding gowns for sale. My father turned the car around and parked. We went into the store, which was filled with gowns. It seems there had been sample gowns that were now being sold very cheaply. I tried one on and liked it very much. The place would only take cash, and by hashgacha pratis, my father had the exact amount of cash on him to pay for both the dress and the tax. The gown that would cost around a thousand dollars in the store ended up costing us $107.

How Is Your Erev Pesach Coming Along? So, another week has gone by, and I hope it was a great one for you! If you followed my tips from last week, then you’re right on target – and I have more tips for you today. Many of you are probably having thoughts along the lines of: I will start a diet right after Pesach, so I might as well enjoy myself and eat whatever I’d like for the time being. Although I agree that it makes sense to start a new program after yom tov, the weight you’re piling on now can really be significant! In the past, I’ve seen people put on up to ten pounds in a very short time. The truth is that just because they knew they were going to start dieting in the near future, these people stopped paying attention to the present moment. And when you think and act on this thought, I can almost guarantee that when you are finally ready to change your food plan and lose weight, you will be so upset by all the extra weight you’ve put on. Now you’ll have be even more rigid with your diet and exercise plan! Many clients have told me, “This is not really my weight. I’ve just put on this extra weight in the last few weeks.” But let’s be honest – this “extra” weight is part of your total weight right now. And it matters! So, although I understand that erev Pesach is not the most practical time to start something new, there is a huge difference between staying the same

weight, gaining two pounds, or gaining ten pounds before you start your new food plan after Pesach. At the end of it all, you will still need to burn off 3,500 calories for every extra pound of fat. So, the next time you’re ready to indulge and treat yourself big-time – think again! Here are another five tips that can help you with this busy, stressful (sorry – joyful) time of year: 1. Exercise is probably the last thing on your mind right now. Besides, you are probably running from one place to another – doesn’t that count as exercise? Well, yes and no. Yes, you are moving around more, not to mention cleaning, organizing, and shopping. These things definitely count for something. But doing a few minutes of consistent exercise is extremely beneficial for stress management and weight loss. So, do you feel overwhelmed? No time to run to the gym? Do five minutes of jumping jacks right in your dining room, or in the kitchen (that is, if your downstairs neighbor allows it). And if you can’t spare five minutes, then set aside three minutes! Short bursts of exercise will raise your metabolism, put you in a better mood, burn off some fat, and leave you refreshed and full of energy. You can do this a few times a day. Take three minutes here, five minutes there, and appreciate the difference it makes in your life! 2. Nuts: I know that some people shy away from nuts because they’re fattening. But the truth is that nuts contain healthy fat, and the bottom line is:

how much you are consuming? If you’re struggling with your weight, then 30 nuts a day could help you out. If your weight is not an issue, then anywhere between 30 and 60 nuts would be okay. Nuts are very filling, not to mention crunchy, healthy, and a great snack when you’re on the run and waiting for your next meal. Choose nuts like almonds, pistachios, Brazil nuts, and walnuts; or even throw some seeds like sunflower, chia, and pumpkin seeds into the mix – about a half-cup daily. (Remember to choose organic whenever possible.) 3. If you drink like a camel, then good for you! But if water is not your thing – and water
usually is stripped of minerals as well – then drinking Zero vitamin water is a great pickme-up! It contains vitamins and minerals, is naturally sweetened with stevia, and comes in many different flavors. Look for it at the supermarket, right where all the other drinks are kept. And remember to stay hydrated throughout the day! 4. Avocado provides nearly 20 essential health-boosting nutrients, including potassium, vitamins E and B, and folate. It’s very satiating, and it can help you manage your junk food intake. People who consume ¼ to ½ avocado daily report being less hungry three hours after their last meal. Try to incorporate it
into your diet in order to stay fuller longer. 5. A smile – you heard me right! Yes, put a smile on your face, even if you don’t feel like doing so. Guess what? Driving down Route 59, one cannot help but notice what looks like an airplane hangar right in front of Evergreen. Ever so curious, we ventured inside to find what is being labeled as the largest Pesach store ever. This may be a tent, but it sure doesn’t feel like it. Wide aisles, unbelievable selection, and great prices are evident from the first minute you step inside the airy premises. Inside Evergreen, you’ll find kosher for Pesach produce, meat, dairy, and frozen foods departments with the exceptional shopping experience everyone has come to expect at Evergreen. As an added bonus, the chometz aisles inside of Evergreen have not been “turned-over,” so you can find everything you need just where you expect it, allowing you to do your regular shopping without any disruptions. To get all the details on this ground-breaking Pesach shopping experience, we interviewed the driving force behind this creative idea, Yoely Schoenfeld, the Operations Manager at Evergreen. Q: Mr. Schoenfeld, Evergreen has a fantastic reputation for innovation. There always seems to be something new and exciting happening at the store. The tent you put up for Pesach last year was a wonderful example of that. It was amazing. A: Thank you. We try! With the tent up, customers felt that they were able to shop for all their chometz right up until yom tov and shop separately, chometz-free, for Pesach. That was our number one goal. Here at Evergreen, we take our commitment to kashrus very seri-

ously. Q: What was the customer feedback after last year’s Pesach season? A: Let me put it this way (chuckles). Thousands of customers, thousands of opinions, but that’s what helps us improve and grow. Overall B”H, the response was very positive. Q: So you did the same this year? A: Not even close! Last year was successful but we had issues — like all new projects have.
We were determined to make this year’s tent the absolute best Pesach shopping experience anywhere. Q: So what changes did you make? A: We made many changes and improvements to the tent this year. It’s more than 20% bigger, so the aisles are way wider. The product selection is larger than ever. We built a floor that’s
weather and wind proof. And it is also very lichtig so that it’s a lot more geshmak to shop in. Q: Does having a tent make operating on Pesach much easier for you and your employees? A: It helps a lot, but Pesach presents certain challenges that are unique to us at Evergreen. Especially during this season, our customers come from far and wide. Different counties, cities, and even other states. We have to take into account so many different chumros and minhagim and still have a variety of products to satisfy every type of customer. But having the extra space this year made it a lot easier. Q: This has to have cost a lot of money! Do you have to charge more to cover your extra expenses? A: We are as committed as ever to giving our customers excellent value. JJ Lefkowitz, who buys all the products for the store, has an excellent relationship with all o f
our vendors and he has outdone himself this year getting the best prices possible. We also introduced our exciting PESACH POINTS PROGRAM this season. Over the next few weeks, our customers will earn points just by shopping and they can trade them in for FREE CASES of items they use regularly on Pesach. Q: How does the program work? A: It’s pretty straightforward. When you shop at Evergreen your purchases will automatically be converted to points that show up on the bottom of your receipt. You earn three points for every dollar spent and 1 point per dollar on items that are on special.

Q: Can customers check out in the tent or do they have to go into the main store? A: Great question! We had a lot of requests for that. Having registers in the tent — though it may seem convenient — is not all that practical. That kind of setup takes a lot of valuable space that we need for products.

Also, most customers will be heading into our main store anyway, because they need to complete their shopping in our produce, meat, dairy, and frozen departments. We found that shoppers were most frustrated as it got closer to Pesach last year because that’s when they came in for “fill-ins” or lastminute items, and they didn’t want to have to go into our main store to check out. In an effort to make things easier on our customers, ‘בעזרת ה, we are planning to open some ”express” registers in the tent in the last few days before Yom Tov. Q: Here’s a tough one: I’ve heard rumblings that customers are upset that you took up so many spots in the parking lot for the tent. A: I was waiting for this one! I hear this from customers all the time. So here

are the facts. There are approximately 750 spots in the Town Square parking lot. That is more than double the amount of spots in any parking lot of any of the other kosher markets in Monsey. The tent actually takes up only 20 spots of the 750. In addition, we have hired a company to help keep traffic moving to keep everyone safe. They will also be directing cars to more convenient spots in the lot. Q: You sound like you have really thought this through and have all the details worked out. A: As with everything, this requires a lot of Siyata d’Shmaya. On our end, we have put in hundreds of hours of planning and thousands of hours of hard work by an amazing team of people. We’ve tried our best to help make yom tov shopping less stressful and over-
whelming during a very hectic time of year. You might actually enjoy shopping for Pesach! Honestly, I don’t think there is any place in the the tri-state area that compares to Evergreen. Between the convenience and the selection of products in the tent, our legendary meat department that satisfies even the most stringent chumros for Pesach, and our value pricing and specials in all our departments; Pesach shopping at Evergreen is worth a trip from anywhere! Chany stood in her kitchen, preparing supper for her family. As she cleaned the chicken, she listened closely to a recorded shiur. The speaker described the importance of women in Jewish history, lauding the accomplishments of the Imahos, Rus, Devorah HaNeviah, Yael, Yehudis, and Esther. Chany was very inspired, but at the same time she felt troubled. She put down her knife and gazed out the window at her children playing outside. I also want to contribute to the future of Klal Yisrael, she thought, but who am I? With a sigh, she returned to the job at hand. Maybe some day, when the children are older and I have more time, I will find a way to contribute more... she thought. Somewhere in the empty space between between Parshas Shemini and Parshas Tazria lies the fate of the entire Jewish people. This statement is dramatic and bold, but upon closer examination, it contains a lot of truth. Parshas Shemini ends with the halachos of kashrus, delineating which animals, fish, and birds are kosher, and concluding with the admonition against eating insects. Parshas Tazria begins with a discussion of the halachos that follow the birth of new child. The Ramban explains that these topics are juxtaposed to teach us that being scrupulous in kashrus is critical to having holy children

with pure, open hearts. Kashrus is not merely a collection of restrictions, but is one of the three cornerstones of Yiddishkeit, along with Shabbos and keeping a pure home. Rav Tzadok HaKohen from Lublin writes in his sefer Pri Tzaddik (Parshas Tazria) that one who is careful in kashrus is considered to have fulfilled all the mitzvos of the To-

He explains that the nachash (the yetzer hara) was only able to infiltrate this world by convincing Chava, and subsequently Adam, to eat forbidden food. Rav Tzadok goes on to say that the yetzer hara can come to rule over a person through what he eats, as it says in kriyas shema, “...you shall eat and be satisfied. Beware lest your heart be led astray...” (Devarim 11:15-16) Indeed, it has been brought down that the Chasam Sofer attributes most apikorsus in Klal Yisrael to eating non-kosher. The Chasam Sofer also writes that the yetzer hara is always trying to push shochtim who are not ehrlich into the kashrus industry (Teshuvos, Siman 205). When this
happens, the results are devastating for Klal Yisrael. The Divrei Chaim in Yoreh Deah (Chelek 1, Siman 7) states that entire kehillos were destroyed because of shochtim who were not serious enough about the responsibility of their work. What is it about being careful in kashrus that is so critical to the survival of Klal Yisrael? Kashrus makes us holy. Kashrus keeps us pure. Through kashrus, we shun cruelty and draw closer to Hashem. The Kli Yakar on Vayikra 11:1 brings down from the Akeidah and the sefer Maharya that non-kosher food contaminates the nefesh, chases away the ruach taharah u’kedusha, blocks seichel, and brings middos of cruelty. The Sforno on Vayikra 11:44 explains that Hashem wants us to be holy, acknowledge Him, walk in His ways, and be similar to Him, all of which will come to pass if we are careful regarding forbidden foods. The Ramchal in Mesillas Yesharim (perek 11) warns that eating non-kosher food defiles a person’s soul more than any other aveira, because food becomes part of a person’s body. The importance of kashrus is especially highlighted at this time of year as we prepare for Pesach. One has to be more scrupulous in kashrus during Pesach than at any other time. Thankfully, there is a special siyatta d’Shmaya in kashrus for those who are sincere in their efforts. It is assur to turn off the hot water, because whenever one turns on the hot faucet, new cold water comes into the hot water tank. By shutting off the water from the faucet, the new water stops coming into the hot water tank; therefore one is mekarev the bishul (מקרב בישולו - expedites the cooking) of the new water that just came in.

However, one may squeeze lemons, oranges, or other fruits directly onto dry foods provided that: 1) Most of the juice will be absorbed by the food. 2) The food will remain somewhat dry, even after it has absorbed the juice. 3) This may only be done if the purpose is to enhance the food ()תיקון האוכל. It is permitted to do this with all fruits, besides for grapes and olives. Example: One may squeeze lemon juice onto a salad or fish to enhance it. Likewise, one may squeeze a few drops of orange juice into yogurt or leben. One may squeeze lemon juice onto sugar. But according to the Chazon Ish, one should not put that lemon juice/sugar mixture into a tea etc., causing the sugar to become liquid.

Recap: The Chol Hamoed trip does not work out well because Sara and Elimelech are agitated, Chaim Elazar is ignored, and the younger kids are ignored. A day after Pesach, the two neighboring homes are demolished. The school informs Sara that Tehilla is not accepted for the upcoming year.
It was miraculous almost, how fast the houses next door went up. Sara remembered how, as a young girl, she’d look at a kallah in amazement. Yesterday, she had been a regular big girl, now she was transformed into a beautiful bride, and tomorrow, she’d somehow, once again transform, into a woman. That’s how this house was coming along. Only several months ago, this house had been lovingly repainted, repaired, washed, and tended by Denise Callen. Soon after, it fell into disrepair through callous hands. It took just one day — one day! — to flatten it and haul it away in a dumpster. And now, a new building was growing in its place, and every day when Sara came out, she was once again surprised to find that the walls had risen another floor, the roof frame was laid, the sheetrock applied, insulation added, and now even the siding was complete. From inside the house, she could hear the radio blaring and men shouting at each other. She remembered the times she’d allowed her children outside while she cooked or cleaned the sink or chatted with her mother on the phone, how they would dribble a ball outdoors, or graffiti up the driveway with colored chalk. She remembered that she hadn’t always been this tight-faced, controlling, and fearful mother — back when her house wasn’t not yet between two adolescent buildings, filled with workers she was afraid of. Now, her children were at home, even while the spring sun begged them to come outside. She had purchased, in a huff of resignation, the entire crafts aisle in Amazing Savings. Every time the kids were bored, she gave them a new package to open. Wood painting, clay sculpting, beading — anything that could be done in the safety of the house, far from falling planks and that purple porta-potty right on the edge of her lawn. There were many inconveniences, like when they sliced the road open to do some sewer work, and she couldn’t move in or out of her parking. A rage welled up inside her. First, she called each of her children’s drivers and asked them to pick

the children up at the corner. Of course, she waited with each of them, rather than just wave from the window. Then, it was time to go to work, and she couldn’t back out. She was so angry, she stood at her door, spring jacket wrapped tightly around her waist, and cried from fury. There was nothing she could do. She was stuck. She ended up calling a colleague, Esther Hammer, to pick her up. Esther couldn’t, though; she’d taken the last few minutes before work to run errands before her daughter went off to camp, but she suggested that Sara call a taxi. “A taxi?!” Sara felt unsupported and even more stuck than before. “I see ladies using them all the time.” “I would never get into a stranger’s car like that.” “I guess it’s safe. People do it. You can use the Jewish company.” In the end, that’s what Sara did. Or the time she was talking to the Rav about Tehilla’s place in school. She was finally being understood, why she couldn’t change institutions for a girl who took change so hard, and why would she need

The sounds were growing louder and screeching, so she said loudly, in case the Rav could still hear her, “I’m sorry. It’s the phone line. I’ll call the Rav right back.” She ran to her pocketbook, where her cell phone was, and called him back. His line was busy. Again,

knife’s edge to her voice. “I never had a problem with my phone. I never asked you guys to rewire. It was working fine until now. I need my phone.” She was having a tantrum. She tried breathing, tried stopping to think about her children, all of whom she needed to tend to, between phone calls to Chaim Elazar’s rosh yeshivah and Tehilla’s school threat, which hung like a gallows noose around their necks now. She couldn’t, of course, stop thinking about them, but she could take the high ground, and wait. Learn patience. Forgive Kasten who’d invaded every single part of her life with his ambitious building and constructing of his gold machine. Have mercy on the poor, underpaid woman sitting on the other end of the line. “Okay,” she said. “I’ll use my cell phone in the meantime. This is hard. Please have him come over as soon as possible.” A technician came, left, and the phone line was still impossible to talk through, and it would remain that way, on and off indefinitely, until Sara resigned herself to a cell phone, bought a Bluetooth headset, and made peace with the fact that when she was in the laundry room, she couldn’t be heard. But the worst part was when they laid the concrete. When that big oblong truck backed out,

The walkway, leading to the side entrances on both sides of her house, came all the way to her gate. The house was not too far behind. There was about four feet, filled with concrete, dividing her house from the neighboring buildings. If she wanted to, she could string a line with them and borrow eggs through the window. The zoning, if there was any, allowed whoever moved in to see directly into her house. The neighborhood was changing, Kasten had said.

Bubby and the Basics By: P. Samuels Purim is over. The costumes and baskets are stowed away, and it’s time to think about cooking for Pesach. (Of course, you’ve started cleaning already.) When you visit the local supermarket, you see an array of foods ranging from the staples — like ketchup and mayonnaise — to gum, candy, ice cream, and cookies, all strictly produced under the best hashgachos. Almost everything is available, (perhaps with the exception of bread and pretzels) in every configuration and flavor imaginable. Old favorites compete for shelf space with new products, all packaged beautifully.
Other than sugar, salt, wine, and grape juice, everything we buy for Pesach comes in its raw state. I don’t even use dishwashing soap, except to rewash everything after yom tov. A few years ago I got a recipe for homemade soap. Using schmaltz and lye, I mix a batch and let it cure, and it’s ready to use the following year. I make enough to last a few years, and I enjoy greasefree dishes on Chol HaMoed. By trial and error, we’ve figured out which nutcrackers do the best job, and which method of roasting raw coffee beans produces the best results. I actually have a Pesach’diga popcorn popper because one year my sons used it to make coffee. My sons also go to a goat farm for milk, because goat milk doesn’t need pasteurization. They know that I am not at all eager to let them boil milk in my kitchen while I am cooking meat foods. Cooking and baking without convenience foods is very labor intensive. Compared to our grandmothers, however, we have it easy, because our Pesach kitchen has a mixer, food processor, immersion blender, grinder, electric griddle and two different kinds of juicers; electric and manual. Some family members are also gadget crazy, so I’ve accumulated an assortment of apple peelers, nut grinders, potato ricers — some of which work and some which are not worth bother-

There are those who, though they use products with those hechsherim all year, will not bring them into their home on Pesach. There is a concept, especially among Chassidim, that “Pesach misht men zich nisht.” Roughly translated, it means that on “Pesach we do not mix anyone else’s food into our kitchen.” To the uninitiated it may seem impossible, but over time my family has accumulated quite a collection of recipes and techniques, and our menus are becoming more varied with each passing year.

ing with. There is one of my recent acquisitions that I would recommend to anyone who cooks potatoes on Pesach: buy a pasta insert to fit your largest pot. When you boil potatoes, instead of tipping the pot over the sink to drain (risking a severe burn chas v’shalom), just lift the insert out of the pot and leave the boiling water behind. There is definitely a chinuch value gained by instilling in your children pride in their heritage, a sense of connection to their forebears, and adherence to family customs, like not “mishing.” When my children were small, the candy man in shul used to bring small chocolate bars on Pesach. My husband explained to our children that although those bars were 100% kosher for Pesach, we don’t “mish.” Each day of yom tov, when they came home from shul, they put their chocolate bars on a shelf in my husband’s closet. On motzei yom tov, the kids had a chocolate party. My children (two of whom are boruch Hashem grandparents today) say that nothing ever tasted as good as that chocolate. Here are a few of my recipes: DUCK SAUCE: Decide how large of a batch you’d like to make; the more fruit used, the bigger the batch. You can use several types of fruit. For each peeled ripe nectarine, peach, or half of a mango that you use, add juice of one orange, juice of ½ lemon, 1 T. sugar and a pinch of salt. Simmer until soft, and add 1-2 T. water. Blend and
pour over chicken before baking. CARROT CAKE OR MUFFINS: 7 eggs, 1 cup plus 2 T. sugar, juice of 1 lemon, 5 large carrots, grated (2 ½ cups), 1 ½ cups finely ground filberts or almonds. Separate 5 eggs. Beat yolks together with 2 whole eggs. Add most of the sugar, lemon, carrots, and nuts. In a separate bowl, beat 5 egg whites with the rest of the sugar until stiff. Combine both sets of ingredients. Bake 50-60 min at 350°. If using muffin tins reduce baking time.
PINEAPPLE SORBET (ICES): ½ cup water, ¼ cup sugar. Boil until syrupy. Process a whole peeled pineapple with “S” blade. Add syrup and juice of 2 lemons and 1 orange. Freeze in large container. When almost frozen, blend using immersion blender or process in food processor. Repeat one or two more times. For easier serving, after blending the second time, pour the ices into individual serving cups — preferably ones that have covers. FRUIT LEATHER: This reci-
pe is ideal for Chol HaMoed. It ties up the oven too much to be done before yom tov. Preheat the oven to 125°. Blend 3 cups of fruit: mango, apricot and kiwi, until just pureed. Spread on baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Spread a thin layer, but not paper thin. Bake 4-6 hours, checking every so often. The end result should be mostly dry, but slightly damp in the center. You could also spread the puree into 6” rounds. Chag Kosher V’Sameach and Hearty Appetite!

1 family pack chicken cutlets
Batter: 4 eggs 1 cup starch 1/4 cup water 1 tsp. salt
Citrus sauce: 1 cup orange juice
1/4 cup lemon juice
1. Mix batter ingredients.
1 cup sugar
2. Cut chicken cutlets into

1. Mix marinade ingredients in a pan. 2. Place chicken bottoms in pan, skin up. 3. Cover and bake for 1 hour on 400°. Uncover and bake for additional 1/2 hour, until it turns golden.

4. Use leftover sauce to re-warm other chicken or meat. It tastes great.
SEASONED CHEF If you have a cast iron skillet with grooves, heat it up for 10 minutes, slice an orange and grill it for 2-3 minutes to get the black marks on it. Side note: On Pesach, when you don’t use many spices, grill flavor adds another dimension to your culinary delights. You can grill cutlets, fish, pineapple, etc.; the options are endless, and the flavor is out of this world.

Satmar-Continental Meat Department only carries Satmar hashgacha meats, which are known to be of the highest standards, both in

Since we serve many customers who specifically use only the Satmar-Kiryas Yoel chickens or, conversely, the Satmar-Marvid chickens, Rav Katz Shlita has implemented stringent regulations to separate the two brands during the processing, packaging, labeling and meat showcasing of the poultry. esach is well on its way, and with it, credit card bills to make o n e shudder. There are spring wardrobes to update, mountains of Pesach-specific foods to buy, and perhaps gifts for engaged couples, hosts, or a spouse. There may be new utensils needing to be purchased, dry cleaning bills to freshen up that kittel, tallis, and yom tov clothing — and of course, the cost of extra cleaning help. Once Pesach be-

gins, the bills continue to mount as foodstuffs may need restocking and Chol HaMoed outings become par for the course. Its an expensive time of year, and many wallets are stretched nearly beyond their limits, causing strain on the bearers’ state of mind. Perhaps, though, it doesn’t have to be that way. Of course, there will still be bills no matter how frugal one is with budgeting, but with a little wisdom applied to just the right areas, excessive expenditures may be prevented. Not known for the being the the most calculated shopper around, (and being a rather pushy writer), I cornered people
and asked them about their frugalities and how they cut corners when “making Pesach.” I was impressed by the many creative ways that wise homemakers save a buck here and there, proving yet again, that “the wisdom of a woman builds her home.” For what better way to build one’s home is there, than by freeing it from undue stress?
FOOTING THE BILL The first recommendation I received for being able to foot the food bill with minimal stress, was to begin the coming year’s Pesach prep when closing up
your kitchen at the end of yom tov. While not helpful for this year, motzei yom tov will be a new chance for advance planning. All you have to do is look for any unopened Pesach goods that you have the minhag to use — such as potato starch, matzah meal, or spices — and store them properly away for the coming year. You might also take advantage of the giveaway prices at the end of the Pesach season for the same purpose. When heading out to tackle that Pesach grocery order, it might be worth it to ask around to determine the store in which you’ll get the most bang for your buck. Sometimes, it may pay to
travel a little further than you are accustomed to during the year. While only pennies of difference may exist on a single item, when buying for a full yom tov, those pennies really add up. The main tip that I was bombarded with was the typical “buy in bulk,” which I planned to include in this article. And then a wise woman came along and shattered that plan. “The best way to save money is to buy what you need,” Chaya T. tells me, “All the jumbo sizes are plain old-fashioned consumerism.” She’s right, you know. If you’ll buy more than you’ll use, it’ll be money straight in the garbage. I mean, really, who’s going to
finish a crate of bananas before they turn brown and mushy? So, how then, can you take advantage of bulk pricing while minimizing waste? “Shop with a friend!” I’m told. Go ahead and order those cases, and then split them up with other takers. You’ll earn the lower price per item, but without the risk of baal tashchis of food and money. If you find, however, that even splitting up cases leaves you with spoiled food, consider buying perishables in small quantities during the week of Pesach. When it comes to clothing shopping, Chany jokingly tells me that her secret to saving

money is to be too busy to head out to stores. While most of us could fall into that category at this time of year, we still have to clothe our family. For my own kids, I find that discount stores often carry beautiful clothing for a fraction of the price I’d pay for new season designs exclusively sold in more expensive stores. Shopping ahead at the cusp of the season change might a l s o

One of the most stylish people I know, Suri, maintains status quo by taking care that her boys always are dressed sharply — both in looks and by using her brain. She recommends coupling short sleeves with a sweater to get your boys through this tricky weather that constantly rotates between hot and cold. When the real summer hits, just take off the sweater and you’ll have a summer outfit. So too, she recommends spending on knickers with knee socks, rather than long pants that you won’t use in the summer. As for weekday

shoes, “It’s only about six weeks until sandal weather.” She says, “Get a bargain pair of shoes to pull you through.” Telephone orders for dry goods can also save money spent on car service, if that is your main mode of transportation.
HOME ON THE RANGE Sometimes it feels that cooking is the only Pesach activity that women get to. While making yourself at home cooking on the gas range, try cutting corners by using every part of the chicken and repurposing leftovers. I wish I’d known as a newlywed that chicken legs or quarters make an even more flavorful soup than simple bones, and have the added benefit of supplying you with readycooked protein to be used shredded in the soup for a hearty meal, or ground and cooked as chicken patties for a different take on leftovers. In fact, nearly everything in a soup can be repurposed. “Everything can be pulled out of one pot, mashed and mixed, and converted to something else,” Baily S. tells me, recommending that even the extra vegetables in soup be blended as a sauce for blintzes. Rivka G. says that even though she eats gebrokts, Pesach’diga matzah balls just aren’t worth it to her at the price she’d pay. Instead, she whisks together potato starch with eggs and drops the mixture into the soup for delightful dumplings. When it comes to apportioning out your hard work to those hungry mouths, it’s a stroke of brilliance to purchase teeny-weeny bowls for serving children; the chances of kids consuming an adult portion of anything are slim to none. Save food by buying things like yogurt in large containers and doling out small portions according to the amount the child in question is likely to eat. The
same goes for soup — that can’tlive-without Pesach dish, also known as “liquid gold,” during the week of “nothing else to eat.”
WHEN PINCHING DOESN’T PAY Despite our greatest intentions, however, sometimes pinching pennies just doesn’t pay. While cutting corners in the fiscal department may lighten the pressure on the bill payers, it should be cautioned that pinched pennies may also result in pinched facial features. Nobody really wants to see a grimacing, exhausted wife at her wits’ end, no matter what the cost. I well remember the first year I made Pesach and how, in the pursuit of Aishes Chayil’ness, I accepted an entire case of a surplus fruit. Two, actually. I couldn’t imagine why the government would want to give away cases and cases of apples and oranges, and with a smile, I happily asked my husband to pick me up a box of each. I was thrilled to save him the cost of buying those items in a grocery store. And then I got to work. Hosting my sisters-in-law was part of the Pesach plan and compote was in high demand. For hours upon hours I peeled and deseeded apples the size of a baby’s palm, trying to fill up the huge pot in front of me. In the end, I could have filled it with tears of frustration. I well understood why the government was giving that fruit away for free! I made the decision then, that a smiling wife and mother is easily worth the cost of averagesized produce. Convenience is a major factor when you calculate the cost of sanity. I’m not alone in thinking this way. For some, the cost of sanity may be forgoing bargains, and for others, simply learning methods to make your workload lighter.
CHOL HAMOED ON A BUDGET The best family memories are not necessarily created with admission tickets to costly entertainment centers. There are so many budget-friendly fun options. Check out these free or low cost options: • • • • •
Airplane watching at the airport State parks and picnics Hiking and biking trails Bronx Zoo (Wednesdays are free) Riding a train (destination is optional)

“ I n the kitchen,” I am told, “make every move worth quadruple the points. With potatoes, for instance, you can boil up a large pot and use it multiple ways. Make potato salad, cubed potatoes baked in the oven with fried onions, mashed potatoes with gravy, and pre-cooked latkes.” By cooking in bulk, (even if you didn’t buy in bulk!) you’ll save brainspace and energy. Go ahead, if you can swing it, make three kugels at once and freeze. While on the topic of freezers, Gittel G. suggests sauteing onions in bulk and then freezing in small containers to be used as needed. You’ll have less dishes to wash and more time on your hands. Delegate jobs to those who plan to partake in the yom tov meals you’re preparing. On my husband’s side of the family, cooking was solely our honored matriarch’s self-claimed job. Bubby prepared all of the Pesach food for every branch of the family, throwing lots of love into each recipe. When Bubby was nifteres, cooking for Pesach became on overwhelming burden for the large families that had never prepared for a full yom tov
before. Cleverly, it was decided that the meat-eating men would all get together, decide on fleish recipes and cook them, while cleaning and side dishes are on the ladies. Likewise, on my side, all of the men gather together to sing and prepare must, a delicious homemade grape juice. Breaking up the responsibility keeps the person whole. While preserving your own reserves of mental and physical prowess, don’t forget to make sure that your crew feels the same! Save on pricey snack bills (and temper tantrums) by calculating in how much each family member needs to eat, and when, to function as a healthy human being. A well-fed family is a well-behaved one. (Sometimes. No guarantees!) In the long run, saving sanity ranks high for many women as the right way to cut corners. There are so many ways for each person to implement this aspect. For those with low energy levels, in difficult life situations, or who are financially blessed — sometimes searching for a bargain isn’t priority, and that’s okay. For them, walking into a store with quality clothing with known brands and a good fit will shorten the shopping time and energize them. There are also parents that have waited years for the beautiful children they’ve finally been blessed with and relish the chance to splurge for yom tov, or perhaps,
a family that has lived counting nickels and dimes over the years is now more well-off and dreams of treating their longsuffering children. Or maybe, seeing one’s child look especially put together with brand-name clothing has a calming affect on the nerves, helping one to mother best. No two situations are exactly alike, and you’ll have to pick and choose what works in budgeting for your family. Now is the time to calculate what you’d like your yom tov to look like, and work towards that goal. Whatever it may be — whether cutting corners in the kitchen, grocery, or physical/ mental workload — we wish you a kosher and freilichen Pesach, with minimal budgeting and sanity stress! Remember, only you can decide which cut is sharpest for you.

The first part of Adar is about fun and giddiness, while the second part of Adar concerns getting down to business: Pesach is on its way! Every yom tov has its To Do list, but Pesach’s list seems, at times, to loom larger and more daunting than any other. How can you bring it into proper proportion? Each person tackles her
on their plate, I’ll calculate the number of pounds needed. Ditto for matzah. Everything is approximate. Experience has taught me to also factor in the days before Pesach when everyone is starving, and throwing a chicken into the oven quiets the growling hungries. With every day assigned an amount of food, I add up each item from first
shows up on my list. Specialty items are also listed: nuts, spices, exotic chocolate, etc. I err on the side of extra, so that each day’s plan gives me some leeway in case additional company shows up. When it is all added up, I see whether it pays to buy in bulk or not. If I only need two roasts, it doesn’t pay for me to buy an entire

My first line of defense is my calendar. During planning, I’ll open it up to the week of Pesach and write on the top of each day how many people — adults and children — are expected for meals. I don’t need to have an exact menu planned, but I do jot down how many chicken bottoms or schnitzels, roasts or chopped meat, turkey or fish I would need to feed them. If on Tuesday of Chol Hamoed we will be hosting only six adults who are meat eaters, than a 3½-pound roast is what I would need. If I am having mostly children, I might opt for meat balls, and depending on whether they are good eaters or barely taste what’s

to last days. If I need three pounds of schnitzel for the first day and two pounds for Chol Hamoed and another three pounds for Shabbos, I know I will need eight pounds of schnitzel. Then I start again for chicken tops and get my total. I do this for each type of main. Now I have my shopping list, and I can place my meat order. Desserts are also listed. If Aunt Devorah is coming for the first days of yom tov and vanilla ice cream is her favorite and the expected number of guests for first days of Yom Tov is 15 — I will be making a double ice cream recipe, and I’ll make sure to indicate the number of whips and eggs it will call for. This is done for each day that a dessert is planned. Whether I am buying cookies or cake — or baking from scratch, it
carton, even if they are a good price and can be used after Pesach. Having so much extra adds to the financial strain of the holiday and to the logistical problem of where to store it all. I approach fruit and vegetables in basically the same way, factoring in that they are much more perishable. If I am having 15 people per meal and they are salad eaters, I figure on how many cukes, tomatoes, lettuce, peppers, etc. I will need. If they aren’t salad eaters, then I reduce the quantity. Also, I try to use up the more perishable items earlier during the week. I won’t plan to make something with squash at the end of the yom tov, when it is likely to have started going bad, but schedule it for one of the first days instead. Each year at the end of Pesach,
we write down amounts of what we actually needed and how many adults and children we had. This is enormously helpful in planning on how much matzah to buy (and they cost almost about the same as gold, ounce for ounce!) the next year. We also list what was missing and needs to be purchased during the next twelve months: milchig spatula, larger frying pan, extra peelers, etc. One Rosh Chodesh Nissan, we went on a treasure hunt looking for the precious list with all the details of last year’s summary of what had been actually consumed. We now have assigned a special spot for this most precious document. The inside of a cabinet door which houses our Pesach dishes has an envelope taped to it. Each year the new list is placed in the pocket. I know someone who writes the list in the back of their calendar and copies it over to the week after Purim when the new year’s calendar is on the market. The same works for clothing.
you will spend less time fighting crowds, have more of a selection, and come back with more energy than if you wait until the week before Pesach to do your purchases. Last-minute trips to stores tend to be more expensive, since time is at a premium and you can end up purchasing something that would not even be a consideration if there was an additional week before Pesach. Here are some additional steps that I incorporate to the Pesach challenge: Put it all down (on paper) Leave time for regular everyday activities Allot time for the unexpected Never think a task is too small of an accomplishment to bother with Navigate between difficult and easy tasks each day Integrate Pesach chores with regular activities Never say no to help Get everyone involved
Feinstein who was asked how he became such a “baki” in learning, and his answer was, “In five minutes.” Every time he had five minutes, he utilized it to learn. If there is ten minutes until you need to leave, then do something small towards Pesach. Don’t overload yourself with too many physically taxing tasks in one day. If you need to buy a pair of stockings for this Shabbos, make sure to take inventory of all your hosiery needs and get them now. An offer of help is something to welcome. If someone is running an errand anyways, and can buy your girls the shells that match the new outfits you purchased, take her up on the offer. It isn’t a great burden for her and can save you an unnecessary trip. Having the whole family partake in the Pesach preparations gives everyone a feeling of connection.
I err on the side of extra, so that each day’s plan gives me some leeway in case additional company shows up. Taking inventory of what is needed for each member of the family keeps you focused on what you should be spending money on and curbs the temptation to buy something that just looks like a good deal but has nothing to go with it and will either languish in the closet or necessitate additional outlays of money to make use of it. If you know ahead of time what you need, when a sale is advertised for those items, you’ll know that it is something to check out. Timing is also a factor. If you have a list of what you need before the mad Pesach rush hits the stores,
Having your tasks in writing makes them real and of need to be allotted a time frame and time slot for when they will be done. Real life continues, whether Pesach is coming or not — and children need to be fed, listened to, and put to bed, laundry needs to be dealt with, as do the myriad other things which are part of day-to-day life. If no leeway is left for the unexpected, when it does happen (and almost always something does), you will be under stress, which robs you of yishuv hada’as. I believe it was HaRav Moshe

Each individual has her own methods which work for her, but employing the method one chooses is the essence of the plan. TRAVELING FOR PESACH? TAKE HEART Shortly after we married, my husband expressed his desire to spend Pesach with his parents overseas on a yearly basis. Realizing how important it was to him, I breezily nodded my agreement. After a year’s worth of separation, it only made sense to do that. Eleven years and four kids later, we are still committed to our annual oleh regal. With my in-laws living overseas, many other travel opportunities, like simchos, have come up too; by now, I’m a seasoned traveler. A list containing all the big and small items I need for each child is updated from year to year, depending on the child’s age and the weather expected. Pro that I am, I feel well prepared for every aspect of the trip. Well, almost. While my friends and neighbors are busy Pesach cleaning, I’m occupied elsewhere. Packing, packing, packing, sorting, sorting, sorting, shopping, shopping, shopping for a family of six takes time, effort, concentration, and of course — lots of organization. Items keep on getting checked off the list as they enter the suitcase. In addition to a mix of clothing, Pesach items like my husband’s kittel, the embroidered matzah set received from my grandmother during our engagement, and the children’s handcrafted Haggados, (beginning from nursery) must be taken along as well. Then comes the discussion of a night flight versus a day flight. With four children under the age of nine, a day flight will call for a loooong stretch of entertainment. A night flight, on the other hand, doesn’t guarantee a peaceful slumber: it can very

well lead to a crew of over-excited children refusing to settle down. Waking them up early in morning won’t help them fall asleep on the plane, I learned. It only causes them to fall asleep on the way to the airport, after
discussed the seating arrangements weeks before, and everyone knows exactly where to sit. Excitement mounts as the plane begins taxiing down the runway, and reaches a peak as we take off into the night. So
I feel well prepared for every aspect of the trip. Well, almost. which they’re all geared up for action. So, either way, it’s a challenge. Hoping and praying that the children give way to their tired bodies only while on the plane, we decided on a night flight this year. The day we are to leave is a frenzy of last minute preparations. A grocery list is dispatched to my sister to be filled after Pesach — so that we don’t arrive home to an empty house. My parents are called with yom tov wishes, and each child gets his or her own personalized backpack, stuffed to the brim with all the “important stuff” they’ve asked for, to hopefully keep them somewhat occupied on our long journey. After changing the kids into comfortable pajamas and checking the house one last time, we lock the door behind us. We are on our way! In the car, each child gets a sticker adhered to his shirt with our cell number, just in case…. One hundred pairs of eyes would be hard pressed to keep up with them! Smiling their innocent smiles, my sons convince security to wave us through (I guess they don’t know what a danger these three active boys can be to the innocent passengers). We’ve
far so good! Sighing with relief, I thank Hashem for helping us settle uneventfully. Stewardesses pass out light snacks, and then dim the lights as passengers begin readying for the night. The two older children are tired, the younger ones very far from that; they look ready for action. Where a two and three-year-old get so much energy from, I can’t figure out. I tuck them in with their favorite blankets. Story after story after story does nothing to lull them into dreamland; their eyes remain open wide, afraid to miss out on any fun. “Aren’t they adorable?” a passing stewardess says. “Just wait and see,” I mutter beneath my breath. Nothing louder than soft murmurs are heard in the cabin; passengers are either nodding off or reading quietly. My three-year-old Mendy is getting bored; he is ready to begin the party. He winks to his younger brother, a signal in their private sign language which will forever remain incomprehensible to me. The one that says “I’ll unlock the front door while you distract Mommy.” Or, “I’ll run across the street now, and while Mommy brings me back, it’s your turn
to have some fun doing that,” or, “I’ll turn the faucet on full blast and you pour the dishwashing liquid in for a sinkful of bubbles.” Now, on this overbooked flight, I see the wink. Attempting to be proactive, I open a new storybook. Simultaneously, they reach out to close it. Not a good sign. I take out a crafts project. They start peeling backs off stickers, placing them neatly onto the headrest of the seat be-
I don’t understand the rush of Hebrew thrown at me. Smiling apologetically, I reseat my sons, taking another peek at that airplane on the map. Eight hours and fifty minutes left. “Doll dishes,” I announce,

Trying to work quicker than two pairs of nimble hands, I start peeling them off, glancing at the tiny airplane inching its way across the map overhead. Another nine hours to go. No major damage done yet. I’m feeling hopeful. Felt puppets come out of my bag, and I shove them onto the kids’ laps, working furiously to peel the remaining stickers off Delta’s finest seating accommodations. “RAAAHHH!” Mendy cries, waving a gentle looking frog over his head. “REEHHHH!” Sruli returns in a pitch so loud, I’m afraid we’re going to attract an audience. Not a very enthusiastic one at that. Out come the emergency bottles. (No cups; the last thing we need is sticky juice all over ourselves and our paraphernalia.) I get exactly two minutes of blissful quiet until irresistible giggles alert me. Their bottles are cheerfully drip, drip, dripping onto the hapless heads of two teenage girls behind them. For once in my life, I’m glad
reaching the very bottom of my commodious bag. “We want to serve all the people,” Mendy brainstorms. I don’t think the passengers will take well to my stewards-in-training. “Leave the dishes here. We’ll go for a walk.” Squeezing past my slumbering daughter, I put my fingers on my lips. Nodding with an air of solemnity, they follow me into the aisle. “Mendy goes first, and Sruli behind me,” I direct them. We’re safer this way, right? The three-year-old genius tickles a passenger’s unclad foot. His two-year-old fan follows suit. Funny, how they skipped over my husband’s foot in favor of this innocent young man. Attempting to hold onto them both is an impossible feat. They wiggle out of my grasp, escaping down the aisle to freedom. Do I stand a chance? I look up at the map again. Seven hours and thirty five minutes. This plane is only a vehicle to transport us to Eretz Yisroel, I comfort myself. Once we get to Eretz Yisroel, we’ll get to enjoy two and a half weeks of excitement and joy. And we’ll be there in no time!
I think of how Olam Hazeh is like our plane ride; nothing more than a means to get us to our destination, Olam Habaah. Remembering the transient state of this world, it may be easier to patiently weather the journey which helps transport us to a greater world. Thoughts of the yom tov with my in-laws and grandparents and tapping into the spiritual and physical beauty of Eretz Yisroel keep me steady, here on this plane ride that my boys think of as one large adventure. THIS IS JUST THE RIDE! IT’S TEMPORARY! AND A WORTHY TRADE OFF! I remind myself. An hour before landing, the passengers begin stirring. My two exhausted youngsters fall asleep. Dressing the kids, collecting our paraphernalia strewn all over the cabin and apologizing to more passengers than I care to — disembarking also takes thought and effort. It’s been a long, difficult journey, but as we reach the end, I see the merit therein. “So,” my mother-in-law welcomes us into her bustling erev Pesach kitchen. “How was the flight?” “I think we should try a boat for the return trip,” I suggest before excusing myself for a rest.

As long as a dollar bill is 51% intact, the U.S. government is obligated to replace any U.S. currency. More Monopoly money is printed every year than real money. A dollar bill only lasts 18 months before it wears out. Due to its short lifespan, changing the U.S. $1 bill for a U.S. $1 coin would save the U.S. $4.4 billion in 30 years. What happens to the “retired” dollar bills? Under tight security, the unfit currency goes to a shredder. A few shreds of currency end up bagged as souvenirs for Federal Reserve Bank visitors and VIPs. Over 90% of the rest gets recycled as mulch, compost, potting soil, fuel pellets, and even insula-

tion for homeowners who probably have no idea what’s in their walls. How can you know if it’s time to replace your dollar? If a bill has holes about the size of an aspirin or is very dirty, worn out, or faded, the Federal Reserve would consider it unfit for use. Fives, tens and twenty-dollar bills printed before 1996 are automatically pulled from circulation, simply because of their age. If you have any bills like that in your possession, you can swap them for new bills at any bank.
PAPER MONEY? NOT QUITE. Unlike traditional paper made of wood pulp, the paper used for currency is made of 75 percent cotton and 25 percent linen. These specifications are required to have the special red and blue fibers woven throughout. That is why if you accidentally leave dollar bills in a shirt pocket, and it goes through a wash, the dollar bills will not be ruined (as long as they don’t get washed on a weekly basis). Don’t worry, this is not considered money laundering. In fact, the Treasury used to wash and reissue old bills instead of destroying them and printing new ones, and in Ben Franklin’s days, people repaired torn bills with a needle and thread.

Counterfeiting money is a problem as old as our nation. But back then, counterfeiting was a crime punishable by death. Benjamin Franklin, who also printed money for a short time, actually put the phrase “to counterfeit is death” on his money. Counterfeiting was, and is, considered a threat to the economic stability of a nation. Counterfeit dollars can be too good. Fakes are frequently detected because they are more perfect than authentic money. The most counterfeited denomination of money is the $20 bill, followed by the $100. Did you ever wonder why the quarter has ridges on the edge? They were created because in Colonial America improvising criminals tried to counterfeit money. At that time, coins were made of silver and gold. A ten-dollar gold piece was made with ten dollars worth of gold.

So counterfeiters would shave the edges off of coins, and then used the edges to make more coins. (As a result, they’d then be able to buy ten dollars worth of goods for less than the actual worth of the coin, as well as being able to make additional coins.) Today, when coins no longer hold such value, the ridges remain as a form of “braille” for the seeing impaired. Counterfeiting was such a huge problem, that the U.S. Secret Service was originally established in 1865 to combat counterfeiting. At that point between a third and a half of U.S. paper currency in circulation was counterfeit. Governments will sometimes infuse counterfeit money into an enemy’s currency to wreck their financial system. It is said that during WWI, Germany did so to England, and the U.S. to Japan during WWII.

The largest denomination ever printed was a $100,000 Series 1934 Gold Certificate. This bill was used only in banking transactions and was never publicly circulated. It featured the portrait of President Woodrow Wilson. The largest U.S. bill ever in circulation was the $10,000 bill, which was issued until 1945. As of a few years ago, only 336 of these large bills have been known to survive. Salmon P. Chase is depicted on the bill. Though discontinued, technically, high-denomination bills ($500, $1,000, $5,000, $10,000, and $100,000) are still legal tender. The present denominations of U.S. currency in production are the $1, $2, $10, $20, $50, and $100 bills.

Brokered Convention As the elections have been progressing, there has been much discussion about the Republican Party ending up with a brokered convention. What exactly is a brokered convention and how would that work? As previously mentioned, come July 18th, there will be a total of 2,472 delegates taking part in the party convention. At the convention, each of these delegates will cast a vote for a candidate. In the first round of votes, they all must vote according to their allocation in the primary process. A limited number of states do have unbound delegates, and those delegates can vote for whichever candidate they choose. If any one candidate wins the majority, in this case 1,237 votes, which is one more than 50%, that candidate has won the party’s nomination and goes on to represent their party in the general election.

What happens if no one candidate has secured that coveted number of 1,237? The delegates then vote according to primary allocation in the first round, and then all become unbound candidates. They will each vote for the candidate of their choosing in as many rounds as it takes for one person to receive a majority. This, of course, leads to lots of wheeling and dealing. The candidates who are still in the race at the convention, as well as the ones who left the race, and really anyone with influence in the party, can go around and try to secure a majority of delegates. Party bosses will try and recruit someone they believe will have the best chance of carrying the party to victory in the general election and will then try to get a majority of the delegates to vote for the nominee of their choice. This might mean promising to support causes that

They consider it undemocratic for a few party leaders to have the final say as to who should represent party members as the presidential candidate D E M D E L E G AT E C O U N T in the general election. But in truth, for most of the existence of CLINTON SANDERS the United States, party bosses were entirely in charge of selecting TOTAL 1243 975 the candidates. Primaries only came into being in the early 20th SUPER DELEGATES 469 29 century and even then, in the beginning, it was adopted by a small GRAND TOTAL 1712 1004 number of states only. Getting it to be a countrywide event was a slow going process. Over the next 100 or so years, all states of the union joined the primary process, and choosing the candidates became a voter-based decision. It has become such an accepted phenomenon, that many in the Republican Party fear that a candidate chosen by party bosses rather than the public will have a hard time gaining enough support to win the White House in November. But as matters look right now, barring a major incident that gives Trump a huge boost in support, it seems more likely than not that the 2016 republican nominee will be one chosen by an elite few rather than the general public. In addition to creating a chaotic situation with the presidential selection, a brokered convention also changes how a vice president gets chosen. When the nominee is known prior to the convention, the vice presidential choice is announced before as well. The joint ticket gets introduced on the last night of the convention amid much fanfare, which gives the candidates a positive introduction to the country as well as a level of legitimacy. In recent election cycles, candidates had been chosen well before the convention. The votes were just a formal process to confirm the nominee. The conventions were big, splashy parties which celebrated the candidates and gave them a chance to present their platforms and ideas to the country. In this election cycle, although the candidates are already vetting vice presidential choices, before they can offer the job to the best prospect, they will obviously need to secure their spot. The entire prospect of a brokered convention is not one that any modern political party had anticipated. It will be somewhat unprecedented and a strain for the party to make the process as open and fair as possible, and to come out on the other side with a ticket that can rally the support of all the party’s voters for the upcoming general election.
It seems more likely than not that the 2016 republican nominee will be one chosen by an elite few rather than the general public.

9 My friend Raizy, a stay-at-home mother of six children close in age, once remarked that she felt sometimes she was living on Mars. Her world revolved around the children and the children’s world around her, like, well, Mars revolves around the sun (or Earth?). At that point in life, she had no time for friends, barely got any invitations for Shabbos with her brood, and rarely got out of the house, so life had to be pretty much self-sustaining. Mars? That sounds like a tempting location. I don’t have that out-of-this-world experience. In my world, there are people around. People to compare myself to and make me feel inadequate. “Comparisons” and “inadequate” are the two big bad words in my dictionary. We’re invited one rare Shabbos to Aryeh’s sister out of town. It’s always nice to meet up with family and I enjoy an adult conversation with Esther on Shabbos morning. “I just wish I could’ve sent Nachman to shul with Aryeh,” I tell my sister-in-law offhandedly. “Pity your shul’s so far out and he couldn’t take him.” “Oh.” Esther looks surprised. “Why are you so desperate to send him out? He’ll play nicely with the kids here.”

I watch Esther sitting on the floor with her kids throughout Shabbos and somehow getting to all her davening, and inside, the inadequacy alarm shril s. Just then, Nachman starts throwing Clics. Oh no, the Ritalin still didn’t take effect. That means the dose might have been too low. I’ll have to give him another few crumbs of the pill and wait half an hour to see if that does it. And if not, I’ll have to add some more and wait another half hour… “Hey, Nachman, why don’t you build a house with Pinny?” Esther suggests brightly. I’ll set this kid straight in a second; you just wait and see, I can almost hear Esther thinking. Nachman throws more Clics. At the bookcase, out the porch door and over the railing, under the couch, at Esther’s glasses. Esther grabs the Clics box and stashes it away in one of the bedrooms. She glances at Nachman, then at me, shrugs, and goes to the kitchen to prepare the salads. Why are you so desperate to send him out? Esther’s words point gnarled, spiky fingers at me. The conversation continues on its own accord in my head: What kind of mother are you, always wanting to get Nachman out of the way? Why don’t you enjoy your kids for once, or even play with them? And why don’t you teach your child to behave? How can you let your child get away with wrecking someone else’s
house without a major scolding? You are inadequate. You don’t measure up. You score poorly on the mothering report card! Really? I wish I can argue. I am a capable, loving, and hardworking mother! I need to send Nachman out for his and my sake. I’m trying to do what’s best for everyone. And no amount of scolding will stop Nachman’s throwing fit
That’s it. I quit the game. — sorry. You just don’t have a Nachman. I watch Esther sitting on the floor with her kids throughout Shabbos and somehow getting to all her davening, and inside, the inadequacy alarm shrills. She doesn’t need to rest Shabbos afternoon and doesn’t mind the constant noise and commotion. I cannot forgo my Shabbos rest and work hard to settle the kids for a nap so I can get into bed. I escape to my room at every quiet interlude for a precious moment with a book. As we ride home after

Shabbos, all the inadequacy bells ring again, and I wish more than ever that we’d be taking off now for Mars. If I’d live on Mars, I’d take my morning nap guiltfree, without seeing career women striding to work in pressed suits in my dreams. I’d send Nachman out with a babysitter in the afternoon without worrying if Itty was watching from her window and shaking her head. On Mars I’d feel content and not indulgent as I relax with a coffee and soft music when Nachman leaves for cheder. I’d feel accomplished when I retire at 11 pm, instead of reviewing my neighbor Faigy’s impossible schedule as a full-time employee and mother of five and wondering how she manages so well. On Mars I wouldn’t ever call myself lazy, selfish, and spoiled. Instead, I’d believe I am a responsible and hardworking mother who’s doing her best to fill her and her children’s needs. Well, back to Earth. I know the marathon of life on Earth has got to stop. I’m running in the sun, while others might be in the shade, and getting to the finish line is absolutely no indication of anything. That’s it. I quit the game. And I’ll pretend I live on Mars. Will you join me?

AUTISM AWARENESS April has many associations; a more serious among them is Autism Awareness Month. While this may not be the most exciting topic to read in the midst of Pesach cleaning, this crucial topic deserves of a few minutes of your time. A study revealed that the average age of formal autism spectrum disorder (ASD) diagnosis is 5.7 years of age. Why is this alarming? Children who receive intensive services early have the best outcomes. As a parent, you never want to believe that your precious bundle has a problem. But missing a year of intervention services is a lifetime for a child with an ASD. Treatment can reduce the disorder’s effects and help your child learn, grow, and thrive. One of the most gut-wrenching disorders I have worked with is autism. Autism is a spectrum of closely related disorders with a shared core of symptoms. It appears in early childhood, causing delays in many basic areas of development, such as learning to talk, play, and interact with others. The signs of autism vary widely, as do its effects. Some autistic children have only mild impairments and can function in a mainstream class, while others have more obstacles to overcome. However, every child on the autism spectrum has problems, to some degree, in the following three areas:

• Communication: Verbal and nonverbal • Social: Relating to others and the world around them • Ritualistic and restrictive behavior There are different opinions among doctors, parents, and experts about what causes autism and how best to treat it; but despite the myriads of books and studies, there is much that we don’t know. One fact that everyone agrees on: early and intensive intervention make all the difference. Early detection of autism is up to parents. As a parent, you’re in the best position to keep an eye on development. You know your child better than anyone and observe behaviors and quirks that others might not have the chance to see. The key is to educate yourself. Monitor your child’s development. Autism involves a variety of developmental delays, so keeping a close eye on when — or if — your child is hitting the key social, emotional, and cognitive milestones is an effective way to spot the problem early on. While developmental delays don’t automatically point to autism, they may indicate a heightened risk.Take action if you’re concerned. Every child develops at a different pace, so you don’t need to panic
if your child is a little late to talk or walk. When it comes to healthy development, there’s a wide range of “normal.” But if your child is not meeting the milestones for his or her age, or you suspect a problem, voice your concerns immediately. Many concerned parents are told, “Don’t worry” or “Wait and see.” But waiting is the worst thing you can do. You risk losing valuable time at an age where your child has the best chance for improvement. Furthermore, whether the delay is caused by autism or another factor, developmentally delayed children are unlikely to simply “grow out” of their problems. In order to develop skills in an area of delay, your child needs extra help and targeted treatment. The earliest signs of autism involve the absence of normal behaviors — not the presence of abnormal ones — so they can be tough to spot. In some cases, the earliest symptoms of autism are even misinterpreted as signs of a “good baby,” as mothers have told me their infant was quiet, independent, and undemanding. It is important to note that some people without ASD may also have some of these symptoms. But for people with ASD, the impairments make life very challenging.Some children with autism spectrum disorders start to develop communication skills and then regress, usually between 12 and 24 months. For example, a child who was communicating may stop using language entirely, or a child
may stop playing social games he or she used to enjoy such as peek-a-boo, or waving “byebye.” Any loss of speech, babbling, gestures, or social skills should be taken very seriously, as regression is a major red flag for autism. A new study finds that with therapy and intervention, one in every 14 autistic toddlers will no longer meet the diagnostic criteria for autism once they reach elementary school. However, the majority of these exceptional children will continue to display some emotional or behavioral symptoms at that stage and require special education services.

KITCHEN PART 1 Hi everybody! In order to get into the spirit of writing this article, I sauntered into my kitchen with my trusty pen, all ready to spurt forth my thoughts on how to clean the crumbs out of the toaster for an hour and end up in tears with your toaster in the garbage. (Happened to me. Really. Now I just dissolve in tears when at 3 am I’m out of chocolate.) I ended up being awake until 3 am sorting out the toothpicks, and not a written word in sight. Just kidding. I have much better things to do than sorting out toothpicks at 3 am. Like sorting out the straws. So...if you’re doing the kitchen this week, or starting next week, I would love to take this opportunity to tell you, my dear readers, that it’s okay to be frazzled and it’s okay to be exhausted and it’s okay to feel a little overwhelmed. But let me tell you, if you’re frazzled, exhausted, and overwhelmed from sorting the toothpicks at 3 am, (sorry, straws) then that is not okay. Yes, we all love super clean kitchens and super organized closets, but normal is key here. Normal means different for everyone, and only you yourself know when you’re going off track with your general Pesach cleaning and into
Overboard Mode. It’s not easy work. However, the atmosphere can be calm and relaxed if you train yourself to stay focused. Dancing with your broom and singing with your scrubbing brush is definitely the part I meant about staying focused... Okay, let me explain how the kitchen works. If you’ll empty the cabinets, clean the stuff, and put them back inside, that’s totally okay. But I highly recommend throwing out all the little gadgets that was a MUST HAVE once upon a time, and now sits forlorn and forgotten in the back of your drawer. Even when you think you have nothing extra in the kitchen, I will personally visit your home and discard or give away some stuff. Okay, okay, I’m not coming into your kitchen now, but I will make random house calls to make sure you d’cluttered your kitchen according to my demands! (Feels so good to pretend I’m boss for a few moments, y’know). I’m all for having bins and keeping everything within sight and within reach. However, there are hundreds of options for the kitchen, so make sure you don’t get some magical organizing product only to realize that it cluttered up your kitchen even more.
PREP LIST: Basically every cleaning supply you own will be used in the kitchen. We will be focusing on the cabinets in this article, so grab some good shmattes, a good scrubbing brush, gloves, strong cleanser, mild cleanser, Ajax, Soft Scrub, or anything you use for scrubbing pots etc.

CABINETS Let’s begin! Chazak has such inspiring Pesach shiurim. You can listen while you work. The pots somehow get shinier quicker. 356-6665 press option 5 , selection 7. Organizing is one of my passions. Cleaning is a different story. While I enjoy cleaning (stop making faces. I didn’t say recleaning and recleaning and recleaning), because I know the end result is satisfying — I look for quick shortcuts as much as anybody. The kitchen seems to be the toughest place in the house to clean, but it isn’t really. It just needs the most time. Aside from your appliances and pots, you generally just need to empty your cabinets, and...
a. D’clutter- all those sippy cups, bottles, and drink bottles that haven’t seen the light of day the past year, discard. b. Wipe cabinets well. For all year, liners are optional. I personally don’t like the look. I use them only for the cabinets under my sink. c. Whatever you put back inside, whether it’s baking paraphernalia or a hundred different size containers, ask yourself if it’s really needed. Wipe well. Scrub what needs scrubbing. Once your inside cabinets are done, you’re halfway through with your kitchen.
Let’s take a look at how to clean the general things we use in our kitchen:
DISHES/ CUTLERY/GLASSES: Fill a basin with warm water and soap for your dishes. Same for cutlery, glasses and cups. There are quite a few methods for cleaning your dishes. I like this one. Let soak for a few minutes. Wipe dry.
BOSCH MACHINE/ FOOD PROCESSOR/ BLENDER: In order to clean these machines properly, you will need gentle, non-abrasive scrubbing brushes in a few sizes. The harsh brushes scratch the plastic. You can use toothpicks, Q-tips, skewers with paper towels or other messy methods — but brushes do a beautiful job with 95% less hastle. Separate all the parts. Submerge everything, besides the motor part, in warm, soapy water. Take a good look at all the little nooks and crannies. Use a tiny bottle brush to get inside those spaces. Regular dish soap works well. If you need a little extra cleaning, use white vinegar . Rinse and dry.
CROCKPOT: Soaking it in hot soapy water for an hour or two does wonders. If soaking does not do the work completely, rinse out the water and sprinkle with baking soda and scrub. If you still need more than that, use oven cleaner. I’m not a fan of this cleanser as the fumes are strong. Let it sit for a few hours or overnight.
If your crockpot is really burnt, you might need to redo it again. To prevent the dish from getting burnt again, try a liner or spray it with nonstick cooking spray.
PERCOLATOR: Sink water in the percolator will give you those white pieces that float around. Unless you use spring water by every refill, they will keep on coming back. Clean the inside, as well as the outside, periodically to avoid the buildup. Fill it with hot, soapy water and baking soda. Perk it for 15 minutes. Drain. Repeat. Rinse well. Clean the outside with a regular shmatte and cleanser. If water stains persist, wipe down with a cloth soaked in vinegar.
POTS N’ PANS: To get your pots and pans looking like brand new without huffing and puffing (Uh sorry, I meant scrubbing and scrubbing), sprinkle baking soda generously, peroxide on top of that, and add more baking soda on top. Let sit for two hours or so. Wipe away. Total magic. A magician gets a kick out of a rabbit appearing from his top hat. You’ll kinda feel the same way after seeing the amazing results on your shiny pots.

Mortgage Documents by Ann Zeilingold What paperwork is necessary to get a mortgage loan? It is a relatively easy, basic list: • Last month’s pay stubs • Last two years’ tax returns • Last two years’ W-2 forms • Last month’s bank statements • Bank statement with the down payment exiting the account • Photo ID and contact for realtors and attorney If it is SO simple, why is it so difficult or tedious to get a mortgage? It is impossible to go through all the twists and turns and what can go right and what can go wrong in just one article. I will give you one quick example. Last year I met with a client. When discussing his income, he told me that he was a school teacher, that he made a certain amount, and that he had been working in the school for four years. He told me he had about half the funds needed, and the rest was coming from his father, who was also a school teacher. He found a house. I met with him and his father, who was co-signing, to go over all the details. We discussed the funds for the closing. He told me $45,000 was in his accounts, and the down payment was coming from those accounts. The problem was that it wasn’t liquid, and it would take about ten days to get a check. He was nervous that the seller would not wait. Since his father was gifting him the rest, his father would give him the down payment. He signed contract. I asked for the copy of the cleared down payment check and corresponding bank statement, along with his other paperwork. I got paystubs at less than half his contract salary. I got a copy of a bank check for the down payment, but no withdrawal from his account.

I asked for the statement with the withdrawal. He said his father gave him the money and he bought a bank check. I asked his father for the statements showing the withdrawal, and his father couldn’t provide it. He had given his son $35,000 in cash, which he took to the teller and bought a bank check. I was flabbergasted. These were teachers!! The father said to me, “What’s wrong? I cash my checks, and I have been collecting cash in the house for over 18 years.” As for the paystubs at half of what he earned... the yeshiva was behind… This is an example why a mortgage can get dicey. Go explain a cash deposit to an underwriter. Go explain to an underwriter that the employer doesn’t pay on time... Once a lender receives the basic paperwork, he reviews it and asks questions to explain any large deposits on asset statement, and calculates income to determine the current correct income. Sometimes that involves an average, and sometime it involves employer letters and explanations. Even ID can raise questions if the address doesn’t correspond with the current address.
Review of the credit report brings up a whole host of questions that need explanations: late payments, address deviations, name variations… Three tips to avoid as much hassle as possible when you are beginning to look for a home: 1. Speak to a mortgage loan officer way before you start to look and plan your mortgage, so that you can avoid doing something seemingly inconsequential that can become a huge problem with your mortgage approval. 2. Speak only with a licensed and experienced professional that knows guidelines cold. Knowing guidelines and structur-
ing a mortgage around the guidelines is the difference between a loan closing smoothly or not 3. Once you find the loan officer that you trust, trust the officer. Loan officers know their business better than your neighbor, your sister, or that person in shul. Always question and understand, but don’t take your professional advice from those who don’t know the ins and outs.
