The last time I baked challah was four years ago. I run a hectic household, and it just didn’t happen. Reading all of your challah features in your post-Pesach issue — from the inspiration, down to the practicality of an actual challah recipe, and simple instructions on making a shlissel challah — inspired me to take out my Bosch Machine and be m’kayam this special mitzvah. It made my Erev Shabbos so meaningful and gave me a tremendous sense of satisfaction.

SO MUCH FUN WITHOUT THE STRESS

I always enjoyed taking trips with my family, especially during the Bein Hazmanim season when my teenage boys are home and I want to make the most of the little time we have together. One of our most memorable trips was when we climbed atop Little Tor Mountain in New City. It is something that I think Monsey locals would enjoy, and it is something I recommend you feature in your Excursions section.

The problem that we often faced when taking these trips though, was that we didn’t have access to all the information.

We’d go into the car or cab, and call relatives and neighbors, trying to track down the exact address, location, and to get the directions.

Your Excursions booklet changed all that. I now take it along with me whenever we venture out for some family time. I have the info literally at my fingertips, as well as so many great ideas to try.

Let’s not lose focus of why Sarah Schenirer started the Bais Yaakov movement. It was not to make the mothers’ lives easier. It wasn’t meant to be a babysitting service, because ideally it would be best for the girls to stay home and absorb the beauty of Yiddishkeit straight from their mother.

We all know why it was an absolute necessity for her to do so.

When your dear daughters are home this one week, grab the special opportunity to model and teach all the beautiful lessons that can be taught exclusively at this time.

Let her see what it means to prepare for a yom tov with happiness and joy, despite the stress and pressure. Let her experience the awesome feeling of “cleaning,” helping in the kitchen, and “taking care” of the baby. Guess what: I am both a teacher and a mother of a bunch of little children. The week before Pesach, I’m also home with a large crew, Baruch Hashem. I am so grateful to be able to teach my children what it means to be a bas yisroel, and to prepare each daughter to be a future aim b’yisroel. Yes, at that young age. And I kept telling them that I’m lucky to have them at home for so long.

And I made them feel that it was a pleasure to have my little treasures home. Dear mothers, it’s not about baking seven cakes. It’s not about polishing the silver until it gleams. It’s about passing on our beautiful mesorah with warmth and happiness!

My friend Zisi had a baby, and her teenage daughter was embarrassed of how their stroller looked. She felt they needed to get a new Maclaren stroller. The daughter kept asking her about it; however, my friend felt that their old carriage was still in usable condition and there was no reason to spend money on a new carriage. She finally sat her daughter down and explained this to her. Although her daughter stopped mentioning it, it was still something she wanted very much. Then one Shabbos the family went to Zisi’s mother-in-law’s house. After they settled in, Zisi’s daughter tried to get her Bubby to convince her mother that they should get a new stroller. That reminded Zisi’s mother-in-law that her daughter (Zisi’s sister-in-law) had left a stroller that she no longer needed at her house. She suggested Zisi look at it and take it if she was interested. My friend went to look and it turned out to be a beautiful Maclaren stroller. Her daughter was so excited.

On Going Gluten-Free Our topic this week is gluten, which is a subject I’ve wanted to address for quite some time now.

My clients have a tendency to ask me whether they’ll lose weight if they eliminate gluten from their diet, and the answer is yes and no. The extent to which going gluten-free will affect your diet depends on a few factors that we will look into next week. Since gluten is a comprehensive subject, I will divide it into four questions: What is gluten?

Who should avoid gluten?

What health benefits might you experience if you go off gluten?

Will you lose weight if you stop eating gluten?

WHAT IS GLUTEN? Gluten is the stuff in bread dough that makes it “sticky.” It is also used as a binding agent in the glue on postage stamp and envelopes.

In fact, the wheat you eat today has been bioengineered to contain 90% more gluten than the type your grandparents ate. That’s one reason you didn’t hear Zaidy complaining about the effects of gluten – because the side effects were nothing compared to what they are today! Your zaidy didn’t consume anywhere near the amount of gluten you eat today, because in the last few decades,

The wheat you eat today has been bioengineered to contain 90% more gluten than the type your grandparents ate. That’s one reason you didn’t hear Zaidy complaining about the effects of gluten.

gluten has become a major ingredient in processed foods. I’m talking about food products beyond the standard breads, pastas, and cereals that most people know contain gluten. The truth is that you’ll find gluten in everything, from most soups to many brands of ice cream. An estimated 95% of prepared foods on most grocery shelves contain some form of gluten. So here we go again – there is almost nothing left to eat! Between gluten, food coloring, food additives, homogenization, pasteurization, pesticides and herbicides, it seems like the only option is to grow your own food and milk your own cow. In fact, that probably is your best option.

A good friend of mine works in a lab, and she shared the following with me: At work one day, they took blood samples from people of all different ethnic backgrounds. From Africans, Americans, Mexicans, Chinese, Sephardi Jews, Ashkenazi Jews, etc. – they wanted to determine how different people react to gluten. And to the amazement of my friend and her colleagues, each and every blood sample had a very high white blood cell count! This revealed that the body interprets gluten as a foreign invader! A high white blood cell count can cause inflammation in the body, including arthritis, autoimmune disease, hypothyroidism, osteoporosis, skin conditions, and chronic fatigue syndrome. With this information, it definitely sounds like the excessive gluten in our products is a major issue.

Health & Wellness WHO SHOULD AVOID GLUTEN? If you were diagnosed with celiac disease, then you would need to steer clear of all products that contain gluten. Many kids today have celiac diagnoses, and it’s a simple thing to test. Some common symptoms include abdominal bloating and pain, vomiting, constipation, weight loss, poor or stunted growth, a pale and unhealthy appearance, irritability, and behavioral issues.

If you suspect that any of these symptoms are related to the consumption of gluten, see a doctor in order to rule out celiac disease.

People with celiac disease have an extreme hypersensitivity to gluten, and their small intes-

tines have a difficult time digesting gluten. This makes it more difficult for their bodies to absorb nutrients, which can cause ill health. If you suspect that you might have celiac disease and the test comes back negative, however, then you might be “gluten-sensitive.” It may not show up on a test, but people often complain about different digestive problems, and if they go off gluten and feel a huge difference, then they probably fall into the category of “people who are sensitive to gluten.” According to my friend the lab tech, it does seem like we all experience some form of dietary sensitivity.

So, I guess the question is, how much does yours affect you?

The only way to truly know is

to go off gluten – or whatever the ingredient might be – for at least three months to see if you notice any changes in your energy and sleep, and improvements in your digestion, constipation, headaches, and bloating.

Then you can make an informed decision about whether to go off gluten.

Many years ago, I accompanied my mother, shetichyeh, to the local kosher grocery store. In addition to her other purchases, my mother bought a few empty two-pound food containers along with an equal number of matching lids. When we arrived at the register to pay, my mother asked the cashier if there was a separate charge for the lids. I remember my confusion as I turned to ask my mother if they would really charge separately for the lids, considering that a container and its lid went together. My mother replied that what makes sense to us is not necessarily the store’s policy.

The cashier at that point told my mother that he was not sure, but to just forget about it and take the lids. My mother explained to me that the cashier does not necessarily have the authority to make financial decisions on behalf of the store’s owner, and then asked the cashier to wait while she went over to customer service with the lids in question. To my great surprise, it turned out that the lids were charged separately from the containers, at ten cents apiece. I will never forget the words she told me afterwards, “For fifty cents, I should become a ganav? I should go to gehinnom for a mere fifty cents?”

Likewise, I remember how my father, a”h, made a verbal

agreement to sell his house, and the two men shook hands.

A real estate agent later approached my father and assured him that she could get him at least $30,000 more without even blinking an eye. Despite the fact that accepting her offer would have been legal, he would not hear of it. “I gave my word, and I will not go back on my word for any amount of money!”

These stories left an indelible impression upon my young mind, and to this day shape the way I conduct seemingly simple transactions. Honesty in financial matters is critical even at the level of mere pennies, and even at the cost of tens of thousands of dollars. When it comes to money, no amount is too big or too small to make cheating worthwhile.

shall not commit an injustice in judgment in measures of length, weight, or volume. You shall have true scales, true weights, true dry measures, and true liquid measures. I am Hashem your G-d Who brought you out of the land of Egypt.” (Vayikra 19:35-36) The Gemara (Shabbos 31a) brings that Rabba says the first question we are asked when we are led in for judgment in the next world is whether we were honest in our business dealings.

Likewise, it says in Shemonah Esrei, “Baruch atah Hashem, Melech ohev tzedakah u’mishpat. – Blessed are you Hashem, King Who loves righteousness and justice.” Clearly, it is very important to Hashem that we take these matters very seriously.

Why does Hashem take the matter of honesty in business so seriously? Surely there are many reasons, and obviously to be ehrlich is an extremely important virtue in and of itself, but upon deeper reflection, it becomes clear that cheating in business demonstrates a lack of bitachon. If a person manipulates his weights and measures in order to attain a greater profit, his actions reveal his lack of trust in the accuracy of Hashem’s “weights and measures” in determining the amount of parnassa that is right for him – or even in Hashem’s ability to provide more in the first place.

Perhaps this is why these posukim conclude with the words, “I am Hashem your G-d Who brought you out of the land of Mitzrayim.” Why would Hashem specifically mention His having taken us out of Mitzrayim as a reason for us to be honest in business? Perhaps Hashem is reassuring us that if he could take an entire nation of

By choosing not to cheat, we are testifying that everything we have — and everything we don’t have — is weighed and measured according to Hashem’s exact justice. May we soon merit the fulfillment of the words that begin the above bracha from Shemonah Esrei: “Restore our judges as in former times… and rule over us, You alone, Hashem, with kindness and compassion, with righteousness and justice.”

Two Halachos at a Time

Q A

Is one permitted to use antibacterial gel on Shabbos, like Purell, that dries very quickly?

Using antibiotic gel is similar to using liquid soap, which many do not use on Shabbos in order to be machmir on all opinions of the poskim (Mishna Brurah 326:30) that it’s assur because of moled. The concept of this is that through taking a solid or thick object and dissolving it with one’s hands until it becomes more liquidy is considered a form of moled.

This is similar to letting ice dissolve in one’s bare hands or in an empty dish.

This applies only if the liquid soap is somewhat thick and is rubbed or spread, which causes it to become more liquidy. However, if the soap is already diluted with water and liquidy, it would be muttar to use it on Shabbos. There are some Gedolei Ha’Poskim who are machmir and do not allow the use of liquid soap at all (unless it’s for very important purposes and well diluted). The reason for this chumra is because there are no specifications by the poskim exactly how thick the liquid should be in order not to be considered moled. (This is the generally accepted psak, even though there are more lenient options.)

Some liquid gels, such as Purel, do have some thickness, so one should be machmir and consider it like liquid soap. There are those who are meikel with Purell etc. because after spreading it onto one’s hands, it evaporates completely. One can therefore use it when necessary.

Q A

Do I need to buy the new Zman Tech for my refrigerator for Shabbos?

Yes, indeed.

When refrigerators became a household item, there was a difference of opinion from the Gedolei Ha’Poskim. Some gedolim were machmir not to use them at all on Shabbos. The reason for this is because by opening the door of the refrigerator, warm air enters the fridge and turns on the compressor. Some Gedolim were meikel, because it is not certain that enough warm air will enter the fridge to trigger the compressor to turn on immediately.

The most accepted opinion was to open the door of the fridge only when one hears the compressor working. Some poskim said it should only be opened with the left hand. Unfortunately, most people open fridges on Shabbos indiscriminately, as they do on the weekdays.

Refrigerators today are manufactured in a much more complicated way than they used to be. There are some opinions that even those poskim that were mattir regarding opening up the doors of the old refrigerators on Shabbos would not allow the opening up of the new refrigerator doors. The reason for this is that they have a chip that registers every opening and closing of the door and activates the no-frost element of the refrigerator. This is a lav d’oreisa.

With the use of the new Zman Tech equipment, one can now avoid the entire problem and open the fridge doors according to even the most machmir poskim.

PHARMACOGNOSY: The Forgotten Root of Conventional medicine.

What’s green, leafy and very, very wholesome?

Ever since “once upon a time,” herbs and plants have served as the chief method of healing.

The Midrash teaches that Hashem created every plant with the purpose of healing a specific disease. The wisdom of determining which plant carries each healing property was bestowed upon Adam and later passed on through Shem and Ever.

Even the common folk knew the secrets of simple remedies.

A fine balabusta tended to her small patch of herbs conveniently located outside her kitchen window, keeping an eye lest the hens peck on the delicate sprigs.

At the time of the destruction of the first Bais Hamikdash, however, Cheskiyahu Hamelech hid the Sefer Harefuos that was a compilation of this largesse, so that the Yidden would be dependent on Hashem to heal them, instead of their own knowledge.

The Phoenicians were the first ones to brave the seas in search of these “green miracles” — the plants that possessed the power to heal. They trained as sailors and traveled for months to India, Africa, and to ancient Arabian tribes. Upon foreign land, the Phoenicians bartered preserved crops in exchange for local commodities, amongst them, the newest herbal concoctions. They then journeyed home with remedies locked away in their cedar caddies to last them through many an illness.

In Assyria, King Ashur boasted a library of twenty-two thousand cuneiform tablets.

Thirty-three of them taught the purpose and use of medicinal plants. Framing the library was

a large garden where herbs were cultivated, studied, and experimented upon.

In all of the generations, staying healthy was of life’s paramount concerns.

Men of high regard were always studying medicine in order to advance the methods of healing.

Pharmacognosy is a branch of pharmacology dealing with medicinal substances obtained from plants. This name was derived circa 1885 from the Greek pharmakon (medicine), gnosis (knowledge).

Dioscoride, the “father” of pharmacognosy, was a respected Greek physician in the first century. He authored the book “Materia Medica” (materia medica in latin is defined as a branch of medical science that deals with sources, nature, properties, and preparation of drugs), which is famous for its depictions and illustrations of medical plants. It was translated to Latin and has been reprinted many times, and is still used today.

I myself have studied pharmacognosy, and boast an exotic herbal garden where I cultivate medical flowers, plants, and spices.

A while ago, my youngest slipped while jumping rope and ripped the ligament in her knee. In the Emergency Room we were told to expect at least a three-month recovery plus extensive physical therapy.

She suffered from acute pain and was only able to walk with crutches. We arrived home from the hospital after midnight and I knew I had to act quickly.

With an oversized flashlight, an old spade, and a sound dose of compassion, I dug up my daughters refuah. It came in the form of a grubby Comfrey root which was ground in my food processor and applied as a compress to my daughter’s knee. (In a clinical study, it was proven that Comfrey root contains a biochemical substance that speeds up the growth of bones and ligaments by 30-50 percent.)

She protested when I approached her with this “brown, smelly goo,” yet sang my praises when only two weeks later she was off with the birds again.

I admit I had no idea what I was getting myself into. Had I known then what I know now, I am positive that despite the extreme need, I would NEVER have done it. But what is done is done, and now that it is nearly over, it has most definitely been a positive experience.

It all started twenty-three years ago when we moved from California to a house in Monsey that we deemed to be perfect.

“Except for the kitchen,” I declared all those years ago. “It is much too small and old, and is going to have to be redone.” Big words for new homeowners who could barely scrape together the funds to buy a house with Rockland County taxes — which we thought were high back then. But like I said, if I knew then what I know now... well, hindsight is always twenty-twenty.

So we moved in, and made do “just for the moment” while unnoticed, time marched on. Clearly the kitchen was not getting any younger, but neither was I. Instead, I was getting old and set in my ways, which seemed to be an advantage in this particular case. After all that time, the kitchen was what I was used to. I discovered that I was just fine with what I had. But by then, it was not just me in the kitchen.

When teenage daughters winced at the notion of friends and acquaintances coming into the kitchen, pointing to the growing hole on the top of the gas porcelain cooktop. I had mellowed over the years and was able to point out the positive. It was so old, we could actually turn the gas on and off on Yom Tov, thanks to the gas pilot that constantly burned — unlike today’s electronic ignition stovetops. They were also annoyed that the temperature of the oven was not accurate. I took it all in stride and simply set the oven to 425° whenever I wanted to cook on 350°. It worked for me, so why couldn’t they make it work for them?

But even I had to admit, that no amount of positive thinking, nurtured over twenty-three years, could help the cupboards which were looking a little shabby, (to put it mildly) with warped floors inside and doors that had survived years of abuse.

It was time for a new kitchen. (Overtime, if you asked the teen authorities on location.) And so... we (my husband and myself, but more my husband and himself, if truth need be told) researched, and researched and refined, and fine-tuned, going over every minute detail of our ideal plans for a new kitchen. After so many years of putting it off, we were not in any particular rush. The main thing, at that point, was to get it all right. We took so long, though, my friends stopped asking about how it was progressing (and let me tell you, if there is one thing I have learned that women love to talk about, it is new kitchen plans). Even the teenagers gave up on the hope that we were actually going to do more than plan, but one day we took the rather forward moving first step of purchasing cabinets.

At long last, we were making progress, and the kitchen was going to be exactly what we could use: more space, a new layout, new appliances, and a new look – eventually. That was the keyword here, as even after purchasing cabinets, nothing was

Removing the old upper cabinets was the first sign of progress in redoing the kitchen. My husband was doing it himself, and I knew this meant things would take a lot longer than if some crew of men just dropped in and began to work, sweeping in and out in a matter of weeks. I tried putting things in a positive light, and knew that the

advantage of having a husband who is doing the work himself is that he actually cares that having a kitchen redone puts the woman of the house in a strange limbo situation for months. So, the top cabinets did not go out, they went over – way over to the far corner of the kitchen.

The result? No more treadmill. I did not need it. Having to walk clear across the kitchen well beyond our twelve-foot table for every cup, bowl, plate, and spoon, provided me with enough walk-

Next to go were the kitchen counters; the biggest counter first. It got relocated to the family room, two steps down from the kitchen. Disconnected dishwasher? No problem – it made a wonderful dish drain. When my defunct dishwasher went to the curb for garbage pickup, I had become so enamored with dish drain that I kept a rack for that express purpose. I prepared a perfect place for it in the laundry room so I that I was already prepared for the day when my kitchen sink would be disconnected, and I would have to use my laundry room to wash dishes for even more “treadmill time.” Little did I know then, that not only was I going to use the laundry room for drying fleishig dishes, but I would also eventually use the bathtub upstairs for milchig dishes, and the shower in the other bathroom, (also upstairs) for parve. It was the ultimate in a kosher kitchen, and such an improvement on the old — if one only looked at things with the proper perspective. Now I had three separate locations no less, and another way to keep my treadmill gathering dust.

When the next counter and the lower cabinets that came with it were put aside to make room for the new cupboards, they were relocated just like the previous counter — complete with dishes, silverware drawer and all. Sure there was a hole in the countertop where the old stovetop was, but this became the picture of convenience. I simply dropped my

silverw a r e into the proper compartments in the now totally revealed drawer below and voila!

Why had anyone not thought of this convenient method years ago?

Tearing up old flooring with a clothes iron was a painstakingly slow process which melted the glue off, inch by inch, and became a wonderful mother-daughter bonding experience. Once that was done, sheets of plywood for the new tile became a dance floor for my two-yearold granddaughter. She was delighted to finally be able to make sense out of what she labeled: “Mess!” The best part of that dance floor, while it lasted, was that I was not allowed to wash it so it wouldn’t warp.

As the kitchen took over every room, (new cupboards stored in the living room, dishes drying in bathrooms and laundry room, appliances in the front hall, old cupboards all over the family room), I became very good at wearing rosecolored glasses. By the end of the whole experience, it wasn’t just a new kitchen I had achieved, but a whole new skill in being a spin artist, something I practice still today — when I’m not in my new kitchen shining the granite countertops and longing for the good old days when my kitchen was in the process of being gutted.

WHO WAS REB SHAYA’LE ZT”L?

The young man sidled furtively into the Judaica store, clutching a bag from the hardware shop in his hand. He looked around to make sure that no one that knew him is within earshot, and in a whisper, he asked the clerk for a picture of Reb Shaya’le of Kerestir. A calamity had just occurred in his house: his wife had seen a mouse. She had instantly dispatched her husband to get the two most important things: glue traps to catch the critters, and the picture which was purported to prevent them from ever again sullying her abode with their presence.

Who was Reb Shaya’le and how did his picture become famous as a rodent repellant?

Reb Shaya’le, (whose yahrtzeit is Gimmel Iyar, this year Wednesday, May 11 ) was a holy tzaddik, known to have merited seeing Eliyahu Hanavi. He was world famous for his miraculous ways of helping his fellow Jews while trying to keep a low profile.

One version of the “mouse” story is as follows. A flour merchant came crying to Reb Shaya’le about a double trouble. A non-Jew had opened a flour business next door to him and was luring away his customers by lowering the prices excessively. He also was plagued by mice in his warehouse. Reb Shaya’le told him, “Whisper into the mouse’s ear that Reb Shaya’le told him to go to the non-Jew.”

Suddenly, a whole line of mice went marching out of the Jew’s house, through a hole in the wall into the competitor’s warehouse, Pied Piper style.

Reb Shaya’le, zt”l was an amazing human being. He never slept more than two or three hours a night. He was a paragon of humility who loved to learn Torah and spent hours davening, but what gave him the most joy was serving his fellow man. Never was he happier than when there were people at his table, eating until they were satisfied. Melave Malka was a special time in Kerestir. Along with abundant food, with the bilkelech (challah rolls) for which his household was famous, there were always people being helped in various ways.

Any downtrodden Jew knew that just by going to Kerestir, he would surely find some solution, natural or supernatural, to his problems.

One year, there was a shortage of esrogim. Someone told Reb Shaya’le that in a nearby town, a dealer had one beautiful esrog.

He hired a wagon, and together with his trusted aide, set off to see about buying that esrog. The dealer, knowing that what he had was a beautiful specimen, and also being aware of the shortage, asked for an exorbitant price. Reb Shaya’le turned to his aide and remarked, “This year we shall fulfill the mitzvah of Esrog on a

sack of flour. (Meaning, of course, that the extra that the dealer had demanded would be enough for a sack of flour to bake bilkelech for the poor). The dealer was embarrassed, and he offered to give the esrog to Reb. Shaya’le for free.

He refused, insisting on paying a reasonable and fair price.

Chesed, especially feeding the hungry, was an integral part of Reb Shaya’le’s psyche. He passed this love of “giving” down to his children and grandchildren. In Kerestir, in the very house where Reb Shaya’le practiced his benevolence, his progeny set up an entire operation geared to accommodating the thousands who are expected in Kerestir on the day of the Yahrtzeit. They consider it a z’chus that no one goes away hungry.

Not only in Kerestir does one see how this chesed gene was passed down through the generations. In any Yeshiva setting, the bochur who cares to welcome every newcomer and makes sure that his needs are taken care of, is quite likely a Kerestire einikel (grandchild). The one who by default ends up in charge of Melave Malka, or who helps the cook when he seems overwhelmed, is possibly from that same family.

May we all take a lesson from the chesed and warm hearted behavior of Reb Shaya’le, and may his memory be a merit for us all and for all of Klal Yisroel.

Recap: Sara can’t sleep after her discussion with Elimelech about Chaim Elazar.

Even if they’ll to take him to therapy as soon as tomorrow, that in itself brings up many doubts and questions. She prays for his welfare, but gets distracted by her anger over the new houses, which block her view of the starry night and Hashem’s constant presence. Behind Chaim Elazar’s yeshivah, Jose wages a war with himself and finally succumbs to the temptation of machismo and bravery. Just as he’s about to attack, Chaim Elazar awakens.

The first thing Chaim Elazar felt was the breath and touch of another person right near him.

A scream from his entire being. Incomprehensible, unclear, but coming straight from a very real place of self-preservation buried deep inside him, which he’d known nothing about.

Only then did he notice the knife. The boy was huskier but shorter than Chaim Elazar, his facial features a maze of hatred, the knife close to Chaim Elazar’s arm.

It took just one second for the knife to make contact. Chaim Elazar slithered himself off the chair, arm first, and onto the ground. Away, even just inches away from the menacing blade in an illusion of safety.

Clutching his bruised hand, he maneuvered his way under the table, so that there was something concrete between the danger and himself, if only for a second. He was fully alert now. The blood was pounding in his temples, but his voice was smooth, commanding. “Put down that knife. I’ll make it worth your while.” The boy rested the knife upon the table, but held it between his fingers, a dull fire burning in his eyes.

Chaim Elazar welcomed the sound of the dorm windows banging open. It meant someone, somewhere out there, had reason to be suspicious. It was so, so dark. The curious boy was probably shrugging his shoulders now, turning his way back into the room, and convincing himself that he had imagined the scream.

Coming up at the other side of the table, Chaim Elazar made a show of slipping his hands into his pockets, even as he knew that there was nothing there to draw up. Nothing that would make the boy’s mind off the crazy scheme brewing in his head.

Sirens wailed down the road. Chaim Elazar stood, panting, hopeful, sweating, his every fiber alert to every move the boy might make. The police were coming. They just shouldn’t be too late.

Something in those glazed eyes holding his gaze snapped. Jose dropped the knife

in panic and took to the grass.

Chaim Elazar ran the other way, across the yard, up the side steps, into the hallway, and down the hall to his room, where his bed sat, waiting.

He sat down on the edge of his bed, his eyes glazed, looking at nothing. His breaths, long and laborious, continued to wrestle their way into his chest.

Another boy might have cried, he acknowledged to himself.

He merely sat there in shock, rethinking every second of the event, blow by blow by blow, in slow motion — the warm panting of another person rousing him from his nap. His visceral scream. His plan. I didn’t know I could think so rationally at a time like that, he mused. Still, he stared ahead, even as he heard car

Did they think he was the owner of that blade that almost — that almost took his life? doors slamming, even as lights from a police car painted the darkened walls of his room with splatters of red and blue.

Mordy and Dovid stirred in the other beds, rubbed their eyes and sat up, peering out the window, but Chaim Elazar continued staring ahead. There were knocks on the door downstairs and he could hear, on the edge of his auditory awareness, boys opening the door, and someone knocking on his own. Only when the police came into his room — the knife was in their possession, he could see — and commanded him to follow them did he pull himself out of his reverie. A shiver ran through his body and jolted him, throwing him about like a weed in the storm. Did they

think he was the owner of that blade that almost — that almost took his life?

The policeman’s hands were warm and this made the shiver in his hands subside a bit. The officer spoke matter-of-factly to the Mashgiach, who was right behind him. The Mashgiach looked flustered and furious. “He needs a medic,” the policeman said. ***** “I don’t understand this!” Sara was crying loudly, trailing her husband, as confused tears splattered on the cracked walkway.

“I knew there was something wrong. I thought of the worst. I thought maybe there was something sinister eating away at our son. I knew this could go wrong.

Elimelech, how are you going to confront him?”

She had never seen Elimelech this way. His jaws were set in a determined grim gridlock.

His eyes were bloodshot and red rimmed and tired. “I’m all alone in this,” Sara realized. “I can’t lean on him when he needs the support himself.” She kicked a pebble, and it skittered and nicked the cuff of Elimelech’s pants.

There was only Hashem.

In such instances of complete chaos, there was no one, no one to fall onto. She took a steadying breath. “I’m sorry,” she said.

“We’ll do this. It’ll be okay.”

“It might not be okay,” Elimelech said.

“And that’s okay too,” she bravely offered.

“We shouldn’t say anything to him,” Elimelech said. He started the car, which felt freezing in the early morning air, but who had time to feel anything? Her coat was hanging out from the door, a flag of defeat flying in the wind as they wended their way down the mostly quiet streets and toward the yeshivah. “We should just be there for him. Neither of us, nor he, is in a position to

Elimelech and Sara climbed in to find their son in an oxygen mask, with a medic and a police officer hovering over him. ***** Goldy Friedman massaged her shoulder. The pantry was pure art. She had ended up taking a nap that morning, until her fish arrived. Then the babies came home from playgroup. Then they went out for supper, but her husband was distracted, and when she said something to him about it, he didn’t even hear. So she’d come home and put the children to sleep in silence, but he didn’t even notice. And then she had stayed up, but he didn’t even notice. And of course, she had spent a few minutes crying about it, but mostly, she had just angrily attacked the cabinets with a renewed vigor she didn’t know she had, and now, look how gorgeous they were.

was four in the morning, which meant that Menny Goldberg, still living in Yerushalayim, had already sent her baby to the babysitter and was now up for a chat. She was moving back next Pesach, she’d told Goldy, and considering Monsey.

“I’m trying it out for you,” Goldy told her countless times, every time the going was hard or she felt she needed camaraderie.

“Save me a house in your neighborhood,” Menny always said.

Now, Menny was the perfect friend to whom to vent, talk to, and in general forget her nighttime loneliness. “Okay, this house gives me the absolute creeps,” she said, her voice pitching into a giggle whisper.

“So I told you about this neighbor of mine? A Jewish family, not like us, whatever, but frum.

They live in this house, did I tell you that I can see, lemme see, 11 bottles of shampoo on their bathroom window’s tiny ledge?

You know the type?”

Menny laughed. “American.”

“Yeah. Doesn’t look like a drop of Hungarian blood found its way into their veins. Anyway” — she was revving up to the most frightening part of the story — “So I was up late tonight.

I was finishing my kitchen. You should see it. Gorgeous.”

Menny made an appreciative noise.

“And I see this woman!” Goldy says. “The mother. At four in

Okay, this is weird. And getting spookier by the second. I think you should stay in Yerushalayim, Menny. Monsey is so strange.”

Quiches Quiches are one of my favorite milchig side dishes. Cheesy and loaded with a variety of vegetables, they are a hit every time.

These are three completely different quiches, each with its own unique twist on the classic. Enjoy!

2 onions, diced 2 green peppers, diced 2 red peppers, diced ½ zucchini, unpeeled and cut into half circles 4 cloves garlic, minced

3 tablespoons oil 8 ounces feta cheese ½ cup milk 2 eggs 1 deep dish pie shell

1. Preheat oven to 350°.

2. Sauté onions, peppers, zucchini, and garlic in oil. Pour the vegetable mixture into the deep dish pie shell.

3. Crumble the feta cheese on top of the vegetables.

4. In a separate bowl, mix milk and eggs. Pour over the feta cheese and bake quiche for about 1 hour.

I find that most people either love feta cheese or totally dislike it (or don’t know what it is, because they never tasted it).

Feta cheese is a salty and crumbly cheese, found in containers in the refrigerator section of the supermarket.

It adds a very distinct taste to dishes and is worth trying.

1 can tuna (6 ounces), drained and flaked with a fork 2 large onions, diced and sauted 2 beaten eggs

1 cup sour cream 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese 1 can of mushrooms, drained Deep dish frozen pie shell

1. Preheat oven to 350°.

2. Put pie shell aside, and mix the rest of the ingredients well. Pour everything into pie shell and bake for 1 ½ hours.

Dough: 1 ½ cups flour 1 tablespoon sugar 1/3 cup oil 3 tablespoons milk

Mushroom Filling: 4 tablespoons butter 1 small onion, diced ¾ pounds fresh mushrooms, chopped

2 tablespoons flour ½ teaspoon lemon juice ½ cup heavy cream Salt and pepper

1. Mix all dough ingredients well and set aside.

2. Preheat oven to 350°.

3. In a medium saucepan, melt the butter and sauté the onions and the mushrooms in the melted butter.

4. Add flour and stir until smooth. Add lemon juice, heavy cream, salt, and pepper. Cook over medium heat until mixture is thick and bubbling.

5. Roll out the quiche dough and place into a fluted, round baking pan. Fill with the mushroom mixture and bake for 35-40 minutes, until quiche is set and starting to brown.

This is a homemade dough recipe, but feel free to use a frozen pie shell, like in the previous 2 recipes.

a convention victory, Ted Cruz announced that he would be suspending his campaign for president. “Together we left it all in the field in Indiana,” Cruz declared. “We gave it everything we’ve got. But the voters chose another path. So with a heavy heart, but with boundless optimism for the long-term future of our nation, we are suspending our campaign.” Cruz had run his campaign as an outsider, one who danced to the beat of his own drum. He was a member of the Tea Party and someone who had stood up to the Republican elites.

But his record was not enough to beat out the ultimate outsider, Donald Trump. Following his an-

nouncement, Cruz declined to get behind Trump as the nominee and did not reach out to him to offer his congratulations or assistance.

JOHN KASICH SUSPENDS HIS CAMPAIGN On Wednesday, May 4th, after coming in third in Indiana, John Kasich announced that he would end his campaign. He made his speech from his home state of Ohio after cancelling a press conference in Washington D.C. Thanking his family, his campaign staff, his volunteers, and his

donors for their support, Kasich focused on the journey saying, “The spirit, the essence of America, lies in the hearts and souls of us,” and, ”I believe we all need to live a life bigger than ourselves.”

He also thanked the people of Ohio — the only state that he won in the 2016 primary campaign.

Kasich’s campaign had been focused on the journey, and despite coming in behind most other candidates from early on, he stayed in the race to add a different perspective to the campaign.

He had also hoped, being a noncontroversial candidate, to have a chance at the nomination if the primary ended in a brokered convention.

Would you choose to relax and rejuvenate in a resort in Iran? If your body does not respond well to frigid weather, would your most desirable winter escape be to Canada?

Of course not. Perhaps you would vacation in Switzerland, but Iran is notorious for its evil nuclear ambitions. You would certainly enjoy the balmy Florida sunshine, and resist from visiting the blustery Canadian winter weathers.

No. their decision is based on fair and square guidelines. They obtain your credit report, examine if you are fiscally responsible, and decide accordingly. In other words, for good or for bad, your Credit Report puts you on the map.

The Full Picture The era in which people were only able to contact you based on the information provided by the phonebook is long considered a bygone era. Nowadays, transparency dominates and everything can be viewed and mulled over with a click of the mouse. Enter Credit Reports.

Why did Capital One disprove my request for a credit card? Do they play favorites? and resources, and their technological or financial success. Historians record their ancient history, geographers offer insight about their geographical makeup, and journalists profess about their current day-to-day endeavors.

Now let’s talk credit. Have you ever contemplated your credit?

Have you ever sat down to ponder and think: Come to think of it, why did the bank deny me of a mortgage? Why did Capital One disprove my request for a credit card?

Do they play favorites? Do they limit requests to a minimum per day, and I have sought their aid after their said quota was reached?

Did they have a bad, or rainy day, so to speak?

A credit report is a compilation and record of your credit history.

It includes information about: Your identity: This includes your personal info such as name, current and former addresses, Social Security number, your date of birth, and sometimes your employment information.

Your existing credit: This is an accounting of your credit card accounts, mortgages, car loans, and student loans. This will also contain in-depth information about your credit terms, credit debts, and history of making credit payment. Your creditors will update this information on a monthly basis. Your credit report will constantly reflect your up-to-date information, including your current

monthly statement balances and timely payments history. A late payment — even a late phone bill payment — can ruin your chances of obtaining credit services, and missing more than that will make it even worse; the damage remains on your report for years. For example, a single late credit card payment will remain on your report for seven years.

Your public record: This information pertains to your record of court judgments against you and liens against your property or if you have filed for bankruptcy.

This can remain on your credit report for up to fourteen years.

Inquiries about you: A list of companies or persons who have recently requested your credit report. Requesting credit several times in a short period of time will have a negative effect on your report and score. Each request of credit is called a credit pull. Every time you apply for a credit card, loan, or mortgage, they will do a credit pull. Awareness is necessary for when you request a credit pull by credit agencies because it will lower your credit score by several points. As time passes, your score will regain strength. Credit pulls remain on your report for two years, after which they fall off your report and are no longer calculated in your score.

In other words, a credit report provides a full picture of, around, and about you. It is not sepia, black and white, or blurred image — but a photograph in its sharpest hues.

Put Your Best Face

If you would know that someone has installed miniature cameras that follow you throughout the day and record all of your dealings, you would be extremely vigilant. You would harness all your emotions and employ the utmost of self-control to behave with grace. Credit Report is that minuscule camera that sheds light on all your public and financial dealings. Therefore it is best to put your best face forward.

Lenders, insurance companies, employers (only if they request your permission to do so), landlords, telephone and utility companies, and government agencies may obtain your personal photo album and decide whether or not they trust you with making payments and are ready to extend you credit. It goes beyond that. Even if they do decide to grant you credit, their terms and interest rates will depend accordingly.

Because it contains timely and sensitive information, only the above mentioned parties can obtain your credit report with your written or verbal consent. Also, when requested by any government agency, (by court order or federal grand jury subpoenas) the bureaus have to provide your credit report. In any other event, when you want a third party to review your credit report, access will be granted — only if you have supplied them with permission to do so.

Read the Warning Labels Upon receipt of a new expensive gadget you will read all the fine print carefully. What will ruin this electronic indefinitely?

Which steps should I take to ensure that my equipment remains in pristine condition? What are the warrantee or guarantee conditions?

Credit reports are provided by the three Bureaus: Equifax, Experian, and Transunion (mentioned in previous column). They TRAVEL gather their TRUSTED information from CREDIT REWARDS & APPLICATIONS MILEAGE your creditors (banks, credit card issuers, auto finance company, etc.) and public records. All credit bureaus have different tactics and use different information to explore and compile your information, so details may vary from one report to another.

It is very important to review your credit with a magnifying glass to determine whether there are any errors. You may request a free annual report by visiting www.annualcreditreport.com or by calling 877-fact-act (322-8228) (The law will soon change to your benefit and allow a free biannual report.) If you notice any discrepancies, you should notify the credit agency so that you can dispute it. (Otherwise you can receive a report for a fee.)

If you are sighing in frustration and are undergoing credit hysteria, thinking “So, am I interminably lynched if I have made a credit mess up?” Rest assured. A

negative credit dealing or lawsuit against you can remain a blemish on your credit report for only seven years. However, a criminal conviction can besmirch your record indefinitely.

We have read the warning labels. We are informed consumers. Now it is up to us to be credit smart and give our credit report the caution and attention it deserves.

Credit Renovation So what is the toolbox for credit fix up? Is it a table saw or hammer or drill? How can you fix up credit mistakes or past credit errors?

Humor aside, let’s discuss credit remodeling. Say you were denied credit or are displeased CREDIT terms; 0% BUILDINGyour credit with do you CARD CREDIT & APR GUIDANCE MAINTENANCE PROMOTIONS have to surrender in defeat?

No, the company or employer that has delved into your credit is required to provide you with contact information about the bureau that has provided them with the report upon which they have based their decision. If you request a copy of your report they must provide it within sixty days. (This is in addition to your free annual report.) If you notice an error, take out your toolbox.

Dispute the error. Provide your personal information, such as your name, address, social security number, and send in the appropriate documentation and proof which will fix up and remodel your credit.

In summary, your credit report is your credit identity; he personal photo I.D. that is tagged on your credit shirt. The face of your credit dealings. The image of your financial success. Remember; put your best face forward.

Curtain Panels That Hang on a Rod (aka Rod Pocket Curtains) These curtains are simple to make and will transform any room. They can be made using sheers, cotton, linen, or silk; the first two being the most practical, due to easy laundering. When choosing fabric, keep in mind sunlight and privacy. Don’t really want to give up on any of the sunlight streaming in? You might be better off with sheer panels, versus heavier ones. Hold up the fabric to the sun and you will see the amount of sunshine that ends up coming through. Of course, you can opt for a heavy fabric and just totally keep the curtain open by day, inviting the sun in. Or, you can keep two solid or printed panels at the sides for the heavier look, and solid sheers in the center that open and close. There are so many options out there — a nice solid color that coordinates with your décor; a print, paisley, or geometric pattern — the choices are endless. Good quality decorator fabrics and lightweight upholstery fabrics will give you nice volume and body. If you can purchase some extra fabric coordinating to your nursery set, dinette chairs, or kid’s linen set — that will really complete the look. Decorative rods can be purchased at any store that sells window treatments. Make sure to purchase one that fits the width of your window. There are so many different looks you can go with; have fun choosing and creating them!

We will be exploring how to make the panels with and without a lining, (a lining may be necessary for very lightweight fabrics or if you desire it for a room darkener) and even how to create them without a sewing machine. (So no, you don’t have to miss out if you don’t sew!) We will also be covering how to create valances, that lovely, short piece of drapery hung on top of the window which only extends about ¼ - 1/3 of the way down. Valances are great when you just want to add that “touch”, but don’t want to go with a full length curtain. If you have radiators blocking the bottom of your window or kids that will get those long curtains dirty in minutes, valances might be the way to go!

For floor-length curtain panels without a lining you should: • Decide until which point you want the curtains to extend in width, whether it’s exactly until the window frame, one inch after each side of the frame, etc.. Depending on the look you’re after, decide on the length. (Most curtains go from the midpoint or top of the frame until the floor, though if anything is obstructing the bottom you might want to have the panels extend just until the window sill.) Some like the look of the curtains pooling on the bottom, and in that case, take that into consideration when measuring the length. I personally like a clean look — it should be barely brushing your floor. Maybe you’ll choose to start the curtain a few inches above the window frame. Take a close look at your space and then decide on the look you want to create.

• Measure the length and width of the dimensions you want for your curtains. You will need fabric for double the width of your window. This will give it full volume.

If you prefer a very gathered look, you can do 2-1/2 times the width. If you’re hanging panels just to frame the window and don’t plan to ever close them, you can do one-and-a-halftimes the window’s width.

• To the desired width, add 8 inches for side hems. (Unless you will be leaving it as one big panel, in which case, add only 4 inches for side hems.) To the desired length, add the following amounts: 3” for the header if you desire one (A header is the amount of fabric extending above the rod itself forming a small ruffle), the rod circumference + 1” for the rod pocket opening, 1/2” for finishing the casing, and 2” for the lower panel hem. Put more simply, add 6 1/2” plus the rod circumference. A standard rod circumference is approximately 2” but be sure to measure. If you prefer no header, then add 3 ½ inches plus the rod circumference.

• Cut the fabric to size (a good tip is to do it on the floor with a 60” ruler), and then cut in half in the middle to form two panels. If you prefer just one big panel, leave it.

• Press both sides of each panel 1” to the wrong side twice, forming a double hem. Meaning press it in one inch and then again, so there are no raw edges. (A good idea is to use a measuring tape, fold it in 1”, pin down, and iron down. Take out pins, fold again, pin and iron down.) Repeat for the bottom part of the panels. Pin down the folded hem on the sides and bottom. Stitch down on the machine along the folded edges of each side first, then repeat for the lower hem.

Next week we will continue to the top part: the rod pocket and the header, discuss how to do the curtains without a machine and how to make curtains with a lining.

Oftentimes however, the decision of which place to call home is fraught with emotions that run the gamut from excitement and ecstasy, to uncertainty and fear of the unknown. Unlike animals that build their homes wherever and however their instincts guide them, human beings

invest much thought and effort into procuring accommodations. Many aspects must be taken into consideration before setting down roots in any given location, including, but not limited to: location of schools and shuls, accessibility to local shopping, privacy, weather, local demographics, city structure (or the lack thereof), and of course, the cost of living. Without a doubt, however, affordability of rent or mortgage costs rank high-

est on the list of considerations for most. After all, how many people have bank accounts replete with endless zeros?

The “Tiny House Movement” is one of those options that’s gaining momentum around the globe, with miniature housing structures popping up at an astounding pace. With the average Tiny House ranging from a low of 100 square feet to a high of 400, Tiny House living isn’t for most heimishe families, though the benefits that this sort of living offers rings true for many folks. At the heart of movement is the ideology to move away from a life dependant on “stuff.”

By cutting out “excessive” space, one must automatically minimize clutter and over-expenditures, and free oneself from the stresses of high building costs and house maintenance.

With space at a minimum, most Tiny Home owners claim that their shift to “Tiny Living” resulted in massive metamorphoses in their lives by teaching them how to happily “make do with less” — resulting in a greater desire to engage in the organic pleasures of life, such as spending more time in the Great Outdoors. Additionally, Tiny Houses often leave minimal imprint on the planet due to their small size. With less lumber being used, carbon dioxide being created, electricity being consumed, and heating/cooling bills nearly nill, Tiny House living is a great “green” option to consider — if you’d consider seriously downsizing that is.

The main pull towards Tiny House living however, is the ability to Do-It-Yourself. With pre-designed floor plans being sold for as little as $99, Tiny House living is within the realm of anyone who knows how to hold a hammer and make their way to Lowe’s. That is, if you can get around local laws. Most locales have minimal space requirements for buildings to be inhabited, leaving Tiny Houses a likely possibility for rejection by the building board.

EARTHBAG HOMES Although unheard of in many places, Earthbag building is gaining popularity in some of the more rugged states. Touted as one of the most affordable and eco-friendly methods of home-construction, Earthbag houses are created based upon techniques set in place by the military. Due to the need to efficiently set up blast-resistant structures in short order, the use of nature-filled bags is often preferred when building a shelter.

These buildings have the tremendous advantages of being extremely affordable (think between $300-$5,000), naturally insulated, weather-resistant and extremely user-friendly.

Earthbag homes are easily constructed by people with little or no skills in home-building, as long as they have the right materials and a little guidance from others who’ve done it before. Boiled down, the building process consists primarily of purchasing bags filled with natural materials such as dirt, sand, moss or volcanic ash, laying the bags out a brick-like manner, and covering said structure with plaster for long-term durability. With Earthbags used as the base, even complex circular shapes are able to be achieved with minimal effort.

COB HOUSE Although the term “Cob House” may lead one to envision a home constructed from ears of corn, Cob Houses may actually look very sophisticated and up-to-date, despite their organic building materials which consist of a combination of straw and clay. Although labor intensive — due to the collecting, mixing, and building processes — Cob House-building can be a fun way to create a structure to the tune of only a few hundred dollars. What’s more, is that the natural cob materials used in construction are non-toxic, helping one to avoid the Volatile Organic Compounds rampant in modern-day construction. (See sidebar for more on VOCs)

CONTAINER HOMES To be unique, one needn’t always think out of the box. In fact, one of the most original methods of modern building is all about the box! Shipping containers are all the rage in DIY housing now-a-days. With a used 20x8 shipping container running roughly $1,400-$2,800, building a living space in the not-so-typical box can be an affordable option. New containers purchased from the manufacturer are sometimes offered as part of a complete home-plan package, allowing you to receive building plans with your box and simply purchase the additional materials to complete the home at your own convenience.

Container homes can be completely customized to allow multiple containers to be connected and fused into one solid structure. Of course, such activities require either a special set of skills or the hiring of a contractor.

WHAT ARE VOCs? Volatile Organic Compounds, or VOCs are carbon-based chemicals that present with or without smell. They come in thousands of forms, in varying degrees of intensity, with varying degrees of danger.

It is recommended to prevent exposure to VOCs when possible to circumvent potential health problems.

The most common forms of easily eliminated VOCs are found in building supplies like finished wood products, carpets, caulking, paint, and cleaning chemicals.

VOC’s can also be found in electronic devices, air fresheners, vehicle exhaust, and cosmetics.

To reduce the level of VOCs in your home, “off-gassing” new construction and new furnishings is recommended, by allowing air to circulate freely within the home (or by placing furnishings outside) for at least a week before allowing the family to live in the new construction.

SECOND-HAND HOMES For those who are anxious to build, but really strapped on cash, searching through demolition sites may result in finding nearly all of the materials they’ll need for putting up a new house. Using this method, many people have built homes for only several hundred dollars, with the expenditures being on new nails and tools.

When a couple gets married, we bless them that they should have the spiritual tools to “build a bayis ne’eman b’Yisroel.”

Whether a family rents or owns their physical home, they will also need the skills and tools to maintain it. Every Man a Handyman is a new column that will help you accomplish just that. It will provide Do-It-Yourself (DIY) projects and step-by-step guides for basic repairs around the home and garden. Doing It Yourself can save you hundreds of dollars over hiring professionals, in addition to providing a wonderful sense of accomplishment.

Some folks say that you only need two items for home repair: Duct tape: for if it moves and it shouldn’t, and WD40: for if it doesn’t move and it should! While duct tape certainly has its uses, and WD-40 is an excellent lubricant, we recommend you also keep a number of other tools on hand.

Let’s start with the basic tools that you should have to do simple projects and repairs.

Hammers: There are many weights and sizes of metal head hammers, most of which include a claw to remove nails. Rubber mallets, another type of hammer, are useful for special projects such as putting together metal sukkah poles. The rubber provides the required strength, without denting or scratching the metal or producing an extremely loud CLANG!

Screws and Screwdrivers: The chart shows the shapes of the most common screw heads.

Like nails, screws come in many lengths and widths. When selecting a screw, measure its width and length. You must also match the screwdriver to the screw head.

You may purchase individual screwdrivers in a variety of shapes and sizes. Some have very long

shafts, for deeply inset or hard-toreach screws, or very short shafts to provide extra torque. We recommend a screwdriver that has changeable head types, to be sure to have the kind you need on hand.

Some screwdrivers have magnetized heads to hold screws in place as you work. There are also power and ratchet screwdrivers that reduce wear and tear on your hands and wrists. Rechargeable batteryoperated units offer more mobility, as you are not restricted to working near power outlets.

Holding things together: It is useful to have an assortment of nails and screws in commonly used sizes . Other fasteners that might prove handy include duct tape, electrical tape, masking tape, Scotch tape, Velcro fasteners (selfadhesive), double-sided tape, plastic ties, wood glue, and superglue.

Rulers are not just for math class!

A 12-inch ruler is good for measuring small items and for drawing straight lines. For longer distances, get a retractable measuring tape, 3-5 feet long, with a locking feature to

hold the tape in place when extended.

Movin’ around: Pliers have two pincers for grasping things or bending wire. There are regular pliers, long or needlenose pliers, adjustable-jaw pliers, and ones with built-in wire cutters.

Wrenches grasp onto nuts (on bolts) to rotate them into open or closed positions. They come in many sizes and shapes to match the nuts and bolts used. There are sets of wrenches in a range of sizes, and ones with adjustable jaws (eg. a monkey wrench). Allen wrenches are useful for putting together DIY furniture, and tightening set screws in door knobs or shower heads. A lock-jaw wrench can hold small and large pipes, without having to hold onto it.

Safety First: Safety is #1 in any home activity. Many people stand on a chair or table to change light bulbs, build the sukkah, hang things up, or reach items on high shelves. We highly recommend you acquire a sturdy, stable step-ladder. Models are avail-

able in varying heights and can be folded for storage.

Safety goggles should be worn whenever using materials that could splinter, shatter, or splatter.

Work gloves should be worn when handling plywood or rough surfaces to avoid splinters. Rubber gloves protect hands when using chemicals, paints, and cleaning materials.

All purpose items: Other useful items include heavy duty scissors or shears, WD40 lubricant, a level (with both horizontal and vertical scales), wire cutters, and electrical extension cords. X-Acto knives are good for precision cutting. Straight-edged putty knives are great for scraping off Shabbos candle wax from granite/Ceasarstone or other hard surfaces.

Many outlets sell kits with a variety of tools inside a of case. When purchasing, check the quality of the tools. It’s worth getting good-quality items that will last for years. You may also want to get a toolbox with secure closures or a lock if you have little ones at home.

Our family sometimes gives tool kits as a wedding gift so the couple can be ready to hang up mezuzos and wall hangings right away.

Success story of the week Thank you, Kinderland!

Esther* was born with a moderate/profound hearing loss. By toddlerhood, Esther’s advanced abilities were apparent, but she still needed individualized enrichment due to her hearing deficit. We did research to find the best approach to reach our precious child who was locked in her challenges…The answer was… Hamaspik’s early intervention classroom, Kinderland.

They run an amazing early childhood classroom with an individualized curriculum, based upon each child’s needs. They build up their skills, step by step. The classroom teaches adapted every activity to maximize my daughters’ independence. My therapist, who had worked with Esther since she was a baby, signed up with Hamaspik as well. She came into Kinderland every week for a session, to check on her hearing device and guide and train the entire staff in the latest methods and techniques. At the center, my therapist was also able to use the extensive array of cutting edge toys, therapeutic materials, and gym equipment to enrich my child.

After a year spent in Kinderland, a year of intense therapy with every moment becoming a learning experience, Esther learned to listen and follow directions, socialize with confidence and carry on a conversation appropriately. HAMMERS • The idiom “Fly off the handle,” defined as, “to lose self-control,” was inspired by the hammer, and what happens when the head is attached too loosely.

Uses away from the workbench: In the kitchen: A meat mallet is a form of a hammer.

In the courthouse: The judge’s ceremonial gavel, commonly made of wood, is also a kind of hammer.

In the playroom: Mallets are common as toys — inflatable, vinyl, or the ones the ones that squeak when shaken.

On Tu B’Shvat: A hammer is probably the only tool that will crack your coconut open.

Holding the coconut with a towel, firmly tap it with a meat mallet or hammer, turning as needed, until the shell starts cracking in half.

Split the shell, then put the cut side down on a flat surface. Tap with the mallet to loosen the flesh.

Carefully pry the flesh away from the shell with a butter knife.

If it’s the coconut water you’re after — which has tremendous health benefits — add a nail to the mix. Turn the coconut, until you find its three “eyes.” Feel for the softest of the three (only one eye is soft and can be punctured), insert a new nail, and bang with the hammer until it gives way. You can now either pour the water into a container or stick in a straw to enjoy the drink. Alternatively, the above can be done with a Phillips screwdriver.

SCREWDRIVERS • A screwdriver is classified by its tip, which is shaped for its specific surfaces.

• Screwdrivers are from the most abused tools, often being forced to do jobs that they are not meant to do and to fit grooves and slots that are not the same shape. Who hasn’t tried to drive a Phillips screw head with a flat tip or to open a stubborn pain can with a

screwdriver? Guilty as charged.

This friction will damage the tip, bend the shaft, and compromise its performance.

Uses away from the workbench: Precision screwdrivers are smaller, with sleeker handles to enable a firm grip. Sometimes referred to as “jewel” screwdrivers, they are used in repairing watches, mobile phones, computers, and small devices that require extra control.

THE MOST USELESS TOOLS

The Leave Me Alone Box Activating the machine will cause the cover to open, a wooden arm to reach out, and shut the machine off. The end.

At the dentist: By far the world’s most detested device, the dental drill is used to remove decay or a reshape a tooth in preparation for a filling.

In the hospital: A surgical drill is

an instrument used to bore holes in bone for the attachment of surgical pins, plates, or screws to repair a fracture.

On the moon: In 1989, Black and Decker produced special cordless drills with minimum battery consumption for astronauts to drill into the hard lunar surface layer in order to collect samples of the moon’s surface and subsurface to be analyzed.

In oil drilling: Giant drills are used to bore holes in the ground to reach the oil sources down below.

• Saws started out as serrated natural materials such as flint, seashells, and shark teeth, and only later became the tools they are today.

Uses away from the workbench: In the music world: A musical saw, also called a “singing saw,” is a hand saw used as a musical instrument.

Some are specially designed for music, while others use regular hand saws with a baton to create ethereal tones.

PLIERS

Tongs are a tool used to grip and lift objects, of which there are many forms adapted to their specific uses.

They are often used in shaping and removing products when casting metal.

• In Pirkei Avos (5:6), tongs are listed from the ten things that were created Erev Shabbos bein hashmashsos, as a blacksmith must use a pair of tongs in order to fashion a brand-new pair of tongs.

Uses away from the workbench: In the kitchen: Tongs are often used to manipulate food, to rotate and grasp it delicately without breaking it or ruining it.

Under the umbrella of pliers there are so many shapes and sizes and uses, that you’ll find them used in every field.

• Pump Pliers are what’s in every toolbox, for plumbing jobs and miscellaneous household repairs.

• Long Nose Pliers are used when precision counts, like when you have to zero in on specific points along wires to be carefully shaped. This is also good for holding a small nail, instead of with your finger, which are at risk for hammer damage.

In the White House: While arguing in the White House with James Monroe, Secretary of the Treasury Crawford had reputedly brandished his cane angrily at the president, and Monroe responded by snatching up a pair of fire tongs and driving Crawford out of the White House.

• Cutting Pliers have serious shearing power, for cutting thick wires.

In the medicine chest: Tweezers are tongs — used to remove splinters, and provide a grip on hard-to grasp small nuisances.

• Insulated Pliers must be used whenever one is working with live electrical circuits.

• Electronics Pliers, for delicate, carefully controlled cuts in wires, and for trimming delicate wires in jewelry making.

BUILDING BLOCKS FOR SUCCESS: 10 CONSTRUCTION ACTIVITIES The proliferation of new construction in Monsey has ensured building is a very popular topic, even amongst youngsters. My children love watching the tractors and trucks all over, and imitate the banging and beeping. They then connect this experience to building with blocks. Do you have old fashioned blocks, such as Lincoln logs, Kapla, or wooden blocks? Or have the simple building toys lost their appeal to snazzier toys? Here’s one rule to learn: The more a toy does, the less likely your child will be to use her imagination when playing with it.

One milestone evaluators assess in children is, “Can he stack seven blocks at age eighteen months?” I often wonder if children are missing this skill due to lack of exposure to blocks.

Block play requires fine and gross motor skills.

It enhances problem-solving abilities, mathematics skills, and language and literacy readiness. It builds self-esteem and feelings of success. When I tried building with my toddlers, however, there was little building going on. At age two, children carry, touch, pile, and knock down the blocks. They enjoy carrying them around in baskets. By age three, youngsters learn to configure blocks horizontally and create stacks vertically. Then, they can learn to create bridges, starting with simple ones, and move towards more complex structures that use plan-

ning and patterns.

Are you avoiding block play because of the mess? (How did I guess?) A room corner may be just the place to build, as it provides protection from traffic. Children need both the time and space to explore, follow through on ideas, and create. Make sure you can provide both before starting any “new construction.” Remember to give advance notice that playtime is coming to an end. Clean up time can be a positive learning experience. Recognize its value as a matching and sorting activity, and put it into your routine. Be sure to allow plenty of time.

Bulldozers can help dismantle and motivate tots to cleanup.

FUN BUILDING IDEAS TO TRY: 1. Use all your recycling boxes. Take your empty (and clean) shoe, cereal, pudding, and detergent boxes and tape lids closed. Children can decorate plain boxes with markers or crayons. You can stick on contact paper for a matching set. This is a great rainy day activity. When I organized a workshop about creating homemade toys, I asked one mother to create sample blocks. Her children had such a good time with them, that they asked her to bring it back home when the workshop was over. Ship-

2. Collect empty, (again, clean) plastic cream cheese and cottage tubs of all sizes. Snap lids on for building. These are fun blocks for the bath!

3. Draw a house or building on a paper bag. Fill it with newspaper, fold opening to close, tape shut.

Shape sides so they are as flat as possible for easier stacking.

During block play, children can recreate scenes from our community, such as a school, park or grocery. Here are ways to get them started: 4. Use pictures of local buildings to give them ideas. One innovative colleague created a “Building Book” with pictures of a new house from the beginning to the last stages of construction.

5. Accessories such as cars, dollhouse people, or airplanes make block play more interesting.

6. Use blocks to create roads or train tracks for miniature cars or trains. Cut round boxes in half to create tunnels for them to travel through.

7. How Tall? Stack blocks to your child’s height. How many blocks does it take? Try measuring and comparing to other items.

8. Build block homes to fit different-sized dolls.

9. Make block “people” using photographs taped on blocks! You can also add logos to create buildings.

Add a grocery logo and see if your child recognizes it.

10. Ask your preschooler to draw pictures of what s/he built.

The more a toy does, the less likely your child will be to use her imagination when playing with it.

Save creations when possible.

This enables learning to be extended over time and shows respect. When it is not possible to save constructions, take a photo to display (and send to The View!).

Before dismantling, use the opportunity to acknowledge each structure. Recognition of work and effort is important, building confidence and inspiring further advanced block play.

by Ann Zeilingold There is a saying that a house is a “money pit.” There is no end to the repairs necessary, even if the need for repairs arises just from normal wear and tear. New purchases sometimes also need some renovations, even the house that is in move-in condition. It can be just cosmetics, so that the house is fresh for your family.

When you start out to undertake a home improvement project, you don’t really think about all the mistakes that could happen. But realistically, every home improvement project or fixer rehab has its ups and downs, and there are plenty of mistakes to go around.

I once closed a mortgage loan on a short sale. The home looked beautiful, but had been completely renovated by the homeowner. The home inspector said that the work was done so poorly that the kitchen cabinets weren’t affixed to beams and the deck did not have the proper supports. It was dangerous to live there! The appraiser didn’t pick this up and the buyer wouldn’t even have known about it!

Here are ten pitfalls that you should be mindful of when undertaking any home improvement or renovation on your home.

1. Not Researching Codes and Obtaining a Permit • Many DIYers shy away from obtaining permits, because they worry about the expense, think they don’t need a permit, or don’t want their taxes to go up. Call the local municipality to determine whether a permit is required or not.

Especially if you are doing the work yourself, inspectors will help to ensure the job is done correctly and to code.

2. Under Budgeting

A lot of DIYers underestimate the cost. You think you are saving money, but the time and cost of materials can be more than expected. Itemize every scrap of material in your estimates, including mundane items such as the

cost of nails, staples, fiberglass tape, or joint compound. They all add up. Then account for at least a 15% average of materials for waste. Throw in another 30% for price increases, especially if you’re not buying all of your materials at once.

3. Tackling Jobs for Which You Are Unqualified Before you tackle a job, think about the job from its inception all the way through to its completion.

Can you do it yourself? Do you need a helper? You don’t want to reach the halfway mark and discover you can’t finish. That is the most costly: to pay a professional to finish up what you started.

4. Not Planning for the Unexpected You have no idea what you might find when you tear open a wall. You could find termites or beetles. A pest infestation will require eradication and/or structural repair. You may discover wiring that needs to be replaced, pipes that need to be rerouted, or moisture problems that have rotted away joists or sill plates. Pad your budget and allow yourself a bit of flexibility in your work schedule to accommodate these not-so-nice surprises.

6. Buying Cheap Materials Don’t skimp. You can buy ceramic tile for 50 cents a square foot, but it will probably crack.

Buyers will notice if you install quarter-inch granite on counters or buy plastic baseboards. You want the quality of your work to shine throughout the house.

7. Underestimating the Resale Value DIYers may think that they can sell a house for two to three times more than the cost of its improvements, plus its acquisition price.

That formula doesn’t work all the time. Before undertaking a purchase or a project, check the comparable sales for similar homes in the neighborhood to determine if your improvements are in line with other homes in that area.
