Your magazine is a wonderful place to show some hakaras hatov. Firstly, I would like to comment that I am really enjoying your recipes. The short-ingredient, onepan bake suppers (pasta and chopped meat,chicken cutlets with rice) were big hits and are spreading throughout Lakewood and Eretz Yisroel as I write. Secondly, with the busy yom tov season behind us, I’d like to tell a story about Monsey Glatt. I had just made a major shopping trip and was heading home with my mother, talking about what we would cook/bake first. As I reached the first traffic light, I suddenly remembered that I had forgotten to
wait for my case of eggs! How was I going to make anything now? The thought of turning around and fighting the Route 59 traffic again was just too much. My mother called the store for me and told them we had left the eggs, and they offered to send them over. A few minutes later, we pulled into the driveway and started unloading our purchases. My husband came out to help, and casually asked, “Where do you want me to put the eggs?” Somehow, Monsey Glatt had managed to drop off the eggs before we were even in the house! Thank you for giving us a forum for expressing our appreciation. Mrs. Weldler

“Mommy, the baby has a sharp knife!” The frantic voice of my threeyear-old sliced through my concentration. I’d been wrist-deep in mushy challah dough, intensely focused on the task at hand. Panicking, my heart flew into my throat, and I quickly turned around to see my one-year-old holding the handle of an incredibly pointy knife, its sharp edge gleaming. Covered in challah dough, I lunged towards her, and tried to wrangle the knife from her hands. The child however, didn’t understand the danger she was in. She

liked her new toy, and had no desire to give it up without a fight. Wildly slashing through the air, she swung her hand back and forth, the blade barely missing her body by a millimeter. When finally I got it away from her, I breathed a sigh of relief. I had known that my daughter had found a new hobby of digging through a specific cabinet used to store dishes and silverware that were rarely used, but I thought that I’d checked it over well and left behind only spoons and other safe objects for her to play with. Apparently, I hadn’t looked well enough. Although I had left her playing with toys on the floor next to me while I worked on the dough, she’d made her way over to the cabinet and found that hidden hazard. Miraculously, even though her nimble little fingers had found a dangerous object, the new walker had ambled across the kitchen without getting hurt, and had even played with the knife for who-knows-how-long before my son had noticed what she had. Later that day I reflected on the chain of events. It’d been a long time since I’d baked challah. Years, in fact. There was always an excuse. You know how it goes: I was always too busy, too tired, or too overwhelmed. And then my local bakery came out with its Challah-for-a-Dollar special, and my rational mind said, “Hey, it doesn’t even pay to bake!” Although, I knew that it really did pay to bake, because who can put a cost on a holy mitzvah? But you know the yetzer hara, that sly

little fellow who convinces us to do things that we know are detrimental to our own good… Well, he won in regards to challah for roughly four years. All of that changed, however, when we ran our Challah Edition of The Monsey View. Together with the rest of upstate New York, I was inspired to pull out my mixing bowl, and along with punching down the dough, I punched away my yetzer hara. Not only did my family enjoy fresh shlissel challah that first week, it seems that re-inviting this special mitzvah into my life had a side-effect: I noticed that my children were better behaved, their parents more calm, and the entire atmosphere in general was happier. Could it be, I asked myself, that special bracha had come into my home, in the z’chus of Challah? Energized by this concept, I decided to once again devote Friday to making challah with my children…. Well, you know how that story ends, and it doesn’t include injured children or Hatzolah, Baruch Hashem. If the bracha of serenity in the home wasn’t enough to convince me to try for a third week of making heimishe challah, then the shemirah we’ve seen definitely is. So, if you knock on my door come Friday, most likely you’ll find me flanked by my children, making our own challah. After all, this is a mitzvah that always pays. My tooth had been hurting on and off for a few days, and my dentist thought it could be a wisdom tooth acting up. I tried to get an appointment with an oral surgeon, but whoever took my insurance could not see me that day. One place recommended that I go to NYU’s Urgent Care dental department. They have two afternoon sessions where dental students do the work under the supervision of a professor. I arrived at the beginning of the first session, but a problem arose that didn’t get taken care of until the end of the time slot. They told me I should come back for the second session. I waited around, and when it was time to be checked in, the person in charge refused to allow me to do that, claiming I had already checked in earlier. I told him they had checked me out and told me I must check myself back in. The man wouldn’t budge, so I turned to Hashem and asked Him to please take care of me. I had done all that I could, and I didn’t have the energy or resources to make sure I was seen. Suddenly, a professor appeared. He remembered that I had been there much earlier and made sure I was taken care of right away. For one, making gluten-free products tasty means that most manufacturers add extra sugar, hydrogenated fats, and different food additives. So, the notion that gluten-free products are healthy is just that: a concept that holds little truth (at least in certain cases). Processed gluten-free products like cakes and cookies aren’t healthier at all, and they won’t do much for your waistline. The sugar and carbs can be as high — or even higher — in these products, which makes you more likely to gain weight. So, that’s the reason why I said “no” to losing weight by going gluten-free. Now let’s examine why I said “yes.”

Will Going Gluten-Free Help You Lose Weight? Here’s the million-dollar question: Will going gluten-free help you lose weight? Last week my response was “yes and no,” and some of you are probably wondering what I meant by that. I know that many people lost quite a bit of weight when they went off gluten, but in my opinion, that’s not the essence of going gluten-free. Let me explain: The next time you’re at the grocery store, take a quick look at the gluten-free section. Chances are you will find almost anything imaginable, from gluten-free doughnuts to gluten-free wafers. There is an abundance of gluten-free products, especially since celiac disease has been on the rise in recent years. For both children and many adults, this can be a big help when it comes to Shabbos parties, Yom Tov, Chanukah, and Purim — or any other time you don’t want to feel deprived. There is one problem regarding weight loss, though.

GOING GLUTENFREE: Going gluten-free has its own set of benefits, especially when it comes to inflammation. For years now, I’ve heard very positive feedback from people who have gone off gluten. However, these are not the people who indulge in ready-made glutenfree products! When you go off gluten without relying on processed gluten-free foods, you will automatically find yourself on a much healthier diet. You won’t have pastries, bread, or any of the other high-carb wheatbased foods that you used to consume in such high quantities. This alone will lead to major weight loss! As soon as you add more protein and vegetables to your diet, you will find yourself burning off extra body fat. Now, that’s how you lose weight on a gluten-free diet! However, here’s another piece of the puzzle we have yet to discuss: Some people claim that wheat gives them digestive issues like gas and bloating, and that they lose weight by going gluten-free because of that.
Just keep in mind that going off gluten and eating anything and everything with a glutenfree label does not mean you will lose weight! You might stay the same size, or even put on a few pounds by overeating. But ultimately, I’m all for going gluten-free. If you plan on eating healthier foods as a result, you will feel much better. And if you have any autoimmune issues like a sluggish thyroid, arthritis, skin conditions, etc., then it’s definitely worth a shot to go off gluten for three months and reevaluate how you’re feeling then. There are so many healthy gluten-free grains available, so it’s doubtful you’ll feel like you’re
missing out. Examples include crackers made from quinoa, amaranth, kasha, and millet. Another option is to cook one — or perhaps a combination — of these grains. So, will you lose weight if you go gluten-free? Only if you steer clear of processed glutenfree food items (for the most part, that is). Interested in digestion and weight loss? The accountant is no longer the shy guy in the corner. Today, accountants are expected to meet with businesses and relate to their clients. Good writing skills are also important in order to communicate properly (though, they can be picked up). An accountant should also have good organizational skills. In general, accounting is a very structured field; you know that your career is pretty set. Accounting is an excellent choice for someone who wants to attain a valuable skill that can bring about the menuchas hanefesh of a steady paycheck for many years to come. Accounting is a very stable field. The regulatory environment is only increasing so the need for accountants is growing.

Stage 1: Mr. and Mrs. Epstein decide that Yeshivas Toras Hashem is the right place for their son Shimon to learn. Stage 2: Mr. and Mrs. Epstein think of a plan how to enroll Shimon in the yeshivah, determining all the necessary steps to take (deciding when to call for an application, who to list as references, etc.). Stage 3: Mr. and Mrs. Epstein file the application and speak to the references to alert them that the yeshiva might contact them regarding Shimon’s application. Stage 4: The creation of the talmid Shimon Epstein is completed; Shimon Epstein “becomes” a talmid at Yeshivas Toras Hashem. The Kabbalah teaches us that everything in this world undergoes a four-stage process of creation. Stage One is the olam ha’atzilus, where something exists as a pre-thought. Stage Two is the olam ha’briah, where the thought becomes a plan, which is a more developed level of thought. Stage Three is the olam ha’yetzirah, where the preparation for the physical creation takes place. Stage Four is the olam ha’asiyah, where the physical creation actually takes place. We refer to Stages Two, Three, and Four as the Worlds of Thought, Speech, and Action, respectively. The first posuk of this week’s

Parsha mentions speech three times: “Vayomer Hashem el Moshe emor el ha’kohanim b’nei Aharon v’amarta aleihem l’nefesh lo yitama b’amav. – Hashem said to Moshe: Speak to the Kohanim, the sons of Aharon, and say to them: let none of you defile himself with the dead among his people.” (Vayikra 21:1) The Kedushas Levi writes
We have all heard that lashon hara kills, but we often dismiss this as being merely symbolic – an exaggeration meant to instill within us the seriousness of lashon hara. that each of these three references to speech corresponds to the final three stages of creation: the Worlds of Thought, Speech, and Action. He points out that just as there is life and death in this physical world, there is life and death in the pre-stages to this world. The Kedushas Levi concludes that when a person
abuses his power of speech, he is considered to have caused death in the World of Speech, as it says in Mishlei (18:21): “Death and life are in the power of the tongue.” We have all heard that lashon hara kills, but we often dismiss this as being merely symbolic – an exaggeration meant to instill within us the seriousness of lashon hara. The Kedushas Levi is revealing to us that lashon hara really does kill. The killing process begins in Stage Two (the World of Thought) with the negative, judgmental thoughts that precede the lashon hara. Speaking lashon hara kills the person in the World of Speech, which is Stage Three of creation. This trickles down to Stage Four, bringing death to this world in its wake. And it isn’t only the victim of lashon hara who is killed. The Gemara in Arachin 15b says that lashon hara kills three people: the speaker, the listener, and the person about whom the lashon hara was spoken. Likewise, it says in Tehillim (34:13-14): “Mi ha’ish ha’chofetz chaim… – Who is the man who desires life…? Guard your tongue from evil and your lips from speaking deceitfully.” Hashem has granted us tremendous power by giving us the ability to speak, and we must be extremely careful not to abuse this power. The above
posuk from this week’s Parsha hints to this. By referring to speech three times while telling the kohanim not to defile themselves through death, it is a hint that misuse of speech causes death in the three worlds of Thought, Speech, and Action. The “creation” of Shimon Epstein as a talmid in Yeshivas Toras Hashem underwent a four-stage process, as delineated above, paralleling the four-stage process of creation in this world. If Shimon the talmid would be dismissed from the yeshiva, then the talmid Shimon Epstein would no longer exist; he would be “killed” as a talmid on a physical level. However, had the process of creation been disrupted earlier – at Stage One, Two, or Three – the name “Shimon Epstein” would also not appear on the roster at Yeshivas Toras Hashem. This would be another form of killing. Had someone, for example, spoken lashon hara against Shimon to the yeshiva at Stage Three, causing his application to be rejected, Shimon Epstein would not exist as a talmid in the yeshiva. He would have been murdered in the World of Speech, causing a physical death to his creation as a talmid. The power of speech is a privilege and a responsibility, which Hashem granted only to man. In Bereishis 2:7, man is called a nefesh chaya – a living soul. Rashi points out that whereas animals are also called living souls, man is more alive because he was granted intelligence and speech. An animal can kill only in this world, but man, being gifted with intelligence (Stage 2) and speech (Stage 3), can kill in three worlds. Words can build and words can destroy. May we all appreciate the tremendous power of speech and use it properly.

I am new in Monsey. Is it okay to use my phone book to look up the address of someone I want to visit? There are a few types of muktzah. One kind is “keli sh’mlachto l’issur” ()כלי שמלאכתו לאיסור. This means a utensil which is mainly utilized to do melachos that are forbidden on Shabbos. One should not move such a keli with one’s hands. • If that keli can be used for other permitted purposes on Shabbos, for example, a hammer which one would use to crack open nuts, one may do so. This is called “l’tzorach gufo” (לצורך )גופו. • This type of muktzah may also be moved if one would need the space where the hammer is, if one would be expecting guests, or if it would get in the way of the Shabbos seudah. These are cases of tzorach mekomo ()צורך מקומו. • No shinuy is required when moving it l’tzorach gufo u’mkomo. • A keli that has no permissible usage on Shabbos, for example an expensive pen or a blender, may not be moved l’tzorach mekomo. A phone book is considered a “keli shemlachto l’issur.” Although one does not use it to do the actual melachah, the dialing of the number, since the main purpose of the book is to look up numbers in order to dial, it is considered a “keli shemlachto l’issur.” Therefore one may only use it to lookup an address (l’tzorach gufo). After looking up the address, one should return it to its place whilst still holding it in one’s hands, because, after one puts it down on a chair etc. one may not move it anymore because it is no longer l’tzorach gufo u’mekomo. One should not place it on a spot that would render it necessary to move it l’tzorech mekomo. This leniency only applies to a muktzah which is a keli sh’mlacto l’issur, not for any other types of muktzos such as machmas gufo ()מחמת גופו, machmas isur ()מחמת איסור, machmas mius ( )מחמת מיאוסor machmas chisoron kis ()מחמת חסרון כיס Comment: I think people might not be aware that when shaking open a garbage bag, there is a perforation that tears. I realized it with the Glad garbage bags, and it may be true with other companies as well. One of the concepts of Makeh Bepatish is to take a product that is one hundred percent complete, yet is still not usable, and to do an act to render it usable. For example, taking a new, finished garment and removing the tailor’s large basting stitches. This garment was a finished product even before the stitches were removed, but it was never usable. Only after removing the stitches does the garment become wearable. Makeh Bepatish also applies to plastic bags and tissues whose edges are still stuck together from manufacturing, because, by separating them they are now rendered usable.

Recap: Chaim Elazar is awakened by a drunken, knife-wielding teen, but staves off the attacker, much to his own surprise. The police and an ambulance are called and Chaim Elazar goes into shock. When his parents rush out to go to him, the new next-door neighbor looks on with disdain at their disheveled appearance.
“How’s he doing?” the menahel asked. “He’ll be okay,” Elimelech said. He and Sara were in two chairs in a lounge on the floor, and Sara could clearly hear the voice of the menahel coming from Elimelech’s cell phone. “He needs some fluids, but baruch Hashem, it could have ended way worse. They say he’s dehydrated, malnourished, maybe.” “So, are you ready to talk tachlis?” the menahel asked. “What do you mean?” “Well” — the menahel indulged in a deep throat clearing — “the police are looking at the footage. They say they are onto the perpetrator of that fight, but—” “It wasn’t a fight. It was an attack.” “Yes, but then there’s the question of why is a young boy out at night, without permission, outside of Yeshivah walls,” the menahel said. “He was learning. He couldn’t sleep,” Elimelech asked, his voice getting tender. “I, too, am concerned about that.” “Well,” the menahel said, and he lowered his voice significantly, until it was a gruff pronouncement. “We can’t have that going on in our Yeshivah, even with a boy like Chaim Elazar. It’s dangerous, and frankly, unacceptable.” “That was exactly my thinking,” Elimelech said. They were at a standoff, both silently unwilling to take up the round bollard of responsibility that stood between them. Whose responsibility was that loose incident that scared both of them out of their mind? Elimelech stood up. Sara also stood, but she couldn’t keep up with the menahel’s end of the conversation anymore, and instead, she crossed and uncrossed her arms, twisted her rings around her finger until they cut, and tapped her foot, never taking her eyes away from her husband’s agitated face. “Even if he was completely innocent, which we believe he is,” the menahel hastened to reassure, and Elimelech couldn’t help noticing how he had modulated his voice into sweetness and partnership, “we still question why he went out in the middle

Why was he out in the middle of the night?” “You’re right…” “And also, you yourself raised the concern that Chaim Elazar wasn’t himself lately.” He sighed. “I’m sorry, but we can’t have that at yeshivah. When he gets out of the hospital, he’s going to need to face some severe consequences.” “Don’t you think that the way this played out is enough of a teaching moment?” Elimelech asked, and Sara stared, then looked down the hall and back at her husband again. “I think I’ve made myself clear,” the menahel said. “We can’t tolerate this type of behavior. We’ll meet all together once he’s well.” Elimelech stared at the phone, still disbelieving he had heard right. Then he flipped the phone closed, and sat down again on the bright orange chair. Sara was afraid to move. Elimelech buried his face in his palms. “Ribono shel Olam,” he said out loud. “It’s not shayach. This is crazy.” He took out his phone again, scrolled through the contacts, then closed it again and replaced it in his pocket. He turned to Sara. “Did you follow all that?” “Not completely,” she admitted. She was scared. But so was he. She didn’t want to say more. “They’re not letting this incident pass once it’s over. I guess they need to make sure all the other boys learn their lesson, because Chaim Elazar already did.” “Do you think they’ll throw him out?” Sara asked, dread already dripping down into her. “I’m sure we can talk to someone. Talk to the rosh yeshivah. Lemme see who else we can call. The rav. The Lembergers.” “Not so fast,” Elimelech said.
He was tired; so, so tired. “We have to understand the menahel before we defend our son.” “It’s simple. He wants to protect himself,” Sara spat. All of her fears, of her son going off course, him not “making” it, it all came to her mind, curtseying and demanding respect. Wasn’t this, her sitting in the hospital lounge with him hooked up to IV, the menahel in a virtual frenzy, the fruition of her nightmares? “We need to be armed with koach, to take care of him best, both b’gashmius, and also to make him choose saner choices,” her husband said. “We can’t run on empty and desperation and still expect to give our son what he needs.” “But we know our son. He’s had enough!” “We do. But we still have the same concerns as the Yeshivah. Why was he outside in middle of the night?” They looked at each other, both acknowledging the impasse. “I think we should let this sit for a bit, and just be here for Chaim Elazar.” “But I can’t.” Sara was honest. “I’m consumed. This is crazy.” “Even in crazy times, the best thing we can do right now for him, for us, for the other children, is just to be focused on the next right thing. It might even take my mind off this situation, which we can’t solve now anyway. Let’s see if he’s up.” “But maybe we could solve it,” Sara insisted. “We can try. We can clear his name. He’s our son! The menahel is—” “It doesn’t matter. It will work itself out. Better for us not to involve ourselves when we’re in such a state.” Her husband was a hero. He really was. Shaken, but not toppled, he was so strong, a leader. She was going to live up to her own role. She marched into Chaim Elazar’s room, where the boy was sleeping, his face a gaunt house for his young and

handsome features. He’d probably, hopefully, sleep for a long while. “Should one of us go home, to be with the children?” she asked. Chaim Elazar would be fine. They still wanted to run some tests, but he was largely out of danger, as far as his nighttime skirmish was involved. Why he was losing weight was a separate issue. Elimelech nodded. “That would be great.” His phone rang again, and he peered at it, not recognizing the number. “I’m taking this call. I’ll stay here. You go.” So she did, driving out of the parking lot of the hospital and looking around, as if this was surreal. She was too sleep deprived to think clearly. “Just focus on the next right thing,” she repeated to herself. But not for too long. Her anxiety, that edge of worry rattled around in her every time she thought a thought, which was more times per minute than she could keep up with. She needed to take action. She could talk to people, take care of things. She called the Rav. “It’s the summer. School is almost starting. Does the school know that they can’t just turn my daughter out?” “Mrs. Binet,” the Rav said in a simple voice, speaking to her hysteria, “the school contacted you be-

Whose responsibility was that loose incident that scared both of them out of their mind? fore the end of last school year. They won’t change their position. You’ll have to find something new.” One child out of school and another one in deep trouble with his Yeshivah, all in one day. And the awful, awful fear of being ousted from the community, at odds with the chinuch partners of their children, and wondering if their place in the community was not irrevocable, after all. “But why, tell me why? How could they? We are a normal, chashuv mishpacha, my husband is a marbitz Torah, we are good parents in the parent body. We pay our tuition on time. My daughter has some challenges. Is that a reason to throw her out? Every child has a chance to shine.” “I’m sorry. I agree with your assessment of your family. I’ve tried to help you, and I’m ready to help you find a school that’s better suited. But your daughter can’t go back there. They won’t take her.” “Tell me why. I’d like to understand.” She was pushing it, but what was a mother, until now the royal queen of her family, now the steward of two children not assured their place of learning, supposed to do, if not calm herself with the facts? “We could say it’s
your fault. You don’t pay full tuition. Your daughter needs more help. But really, it’s about the school growing too large to be able to accommodate. They are operating at such a large scale. They’re inundated with applications, people are knocking their door downs, using any pull they have to get their children in. Many are turned down, others they have no choice but to take. They are bursting at the seams; they simply don’t have the resources to focus on a student that needs so much individual attention.” “Corrupted,” Sara said, her voice scratchy with furious tears. She had asked for this. She had asked for this. But it was good to know. “Maybe so. Also, just changes. Things are changing in Monsey, Monsey is growing, and we have to go along with that.” To be continued...

Patties on the Grill In the spirit of Lag B’Omer, enjoy these three flavorful, moist, and delicious-tasting patties, which can all easily be made on your indoor grill or griddle. Rest assured, you can also easily make them on a cookie sheet under your broiler. If you want to, you can even fry them. The following recipes can be made using ground meat, ground light or dark chicken, or you can use a combination of the two. If you find the mixture too hard to handle and form into patties, then use a scoop to place onto greased griddle or grill. Enjoy!

CHICKEN AND DILL BITES
1 lb. ground light chicken 1 egg ½ cup finely chopped dill 2 teaspoons sesame oil 1 teaspoon salt ž cup cornstarch 1. In a bowl combine chicken, egg, dill, sesame oil, and salt. Shape chicken mixture into patties and flatten. 2. Spread corn starch onto a flat plate and roll patties in corn starch. 3. Grill for a few minutes on each side.

Look up the word “presidential” in a dictionary. Among the synonyms, you will find adjectives such as dignified, judicious, diplomatic, regal. Among the antonyms you may find Donald Trump. And yet after an election season that lasted over a year and featured seventeen candidates with more class, more experience, better plans, and stronger morals and ideals, the Republican Party found itself with Donald Trump as its presumptive nominee. It seems to me that there were two major factors that contributed to these results. The first and biggest was the general discontent among the voting public. The current Congress, which notably is majority Republican, has an approval rating of 12%! Most of the candidates were either members of Congress themselves or long-time establishment Republicans. So going into this election, the candidate that was able to present themselves as the least connected, least established one had the best chance of winning over the disgruntled

American. And say what you may about Donald Trump, but there is no denying his being shrewd. He correctly gauged the voters’ mood, and his campaign threw out all the old notions of presenting a candidate who was ready to take office. Voters were angry! Voters were frustrated! They wanted jobs and security, so he promised borders that were sealed (with a BIG wall) and trade deals that put America first. He promised to “Make America Great Again,” and the message resonated with the people. By midsummer 2015 this became evident in the polls. Shocking every pundit and analyst in politics, in poll after poll, Donald Trump came out on top. When the rest of the candidates
and the Republican Party caught on to the movement, they all tried to gang up on Trump, tried painting him as incompetent and unfit, inexperienced and unsuitable; but as the Never-Trump crowd learned the hard way, an anti-movement has a hard time garnering as much enthusiasm as a pro-movement, and so the phenomenon continued all through the primary elections, until all that was left for the Republican Establishment to do was make peace with the situation and with Donald Trump. Another factor that Donald Trump capitalized on was the media. Running on the notion of “all media is good media,” Trump made outrageous statements, betting that the nitty gritty details would go over
the average voters’ head, but they would associate him with boldness and confidence and view him as the man who wasn’t afraid to stand up the government. He managed to garner far and away the most mentions among all mediums of media on a daily basis. Where other candidates had to pay for ads, his name got mentioned over and over again by the political pundits. His ideas horrified the political elites, but the general public was fired up, and enthusiastically threw their support behind him. And the media gladly carried the message as the controversy brought them viewers —and viewers equaled money. So it was a win-win situation, one that ultimately swept Donald Trump into first place.

Hanging window treatments is a great and guaranteed way to instantly change the face of any room. When decorating, people often overlook dressing their windows and don’t realize what a dramatic difference a pretty treatment will make to their space. Curtains add drama, ambience, and elegance to any room. The best part: window treatments need not be a complicated or expensive project, especially one in a room such as a kitchen, nursery, or bedroom. In the next few columns, we will explore several variations of easy-to create curtains. These curtains are ideal for a nursery, kids’ room, dinette, and really just about any room in your house you’d like to update with a new look!

I hope your curtains are coming along well and that you are ready to finish up the upper part of the curtain.
TO FINISH THE UPPER PART WITH A HEADER Carefully follow these instructions: (The directions for finishing up without a header differ slightly and are mentioned later in the article.) • Fold in ½ inch from the top of the panels to the wrong side. Pin and press down. This is done so there is no raw edge. • Fold under the remaining amount you had measured for the rod pocket top, which should be 4 inches if you have a standard rod (about 2 inches). Meaning, fold four inches to the wrong side. If you have an especially wide rod and left more fabric, work with those measurements. • Once you have folded in the four inches, pin it down. You should be able to visualize a pocket for the rod forming from this fold. • Stitch along the lower folded edge. You are now forming the bottom part of the pocket. You should be sewing on top of the first fold of a ½ inch, forming a four-inch pocket. • Measure 1 ½ inches from the top and stitch across. You should be left with a 2 ½ inch pocket for the rod and a header, a ruffle, on top. • Insert the curtain rod through the casing, hang the curtain, and distribute the fullness so the panel hangs evenly. Voila! Enjoy your curtains and the great feeling of accomplishment!
FOR CURTAINS WITHOUT A HEADER: • Fold in ½ inch from the top of the panels to the wrong side. Pin, and press down. • Fold over three inches from the top, pin it, and stitch down. Your stitching should be over the ½-inch fold you pressed down. Your rod pocket should be formed. • Insert the curtain rod through the casing, hang the curtain, and distribute the fullness so the panel hangs evenly. Voila! Enjoy your curtains and the great feeling of accomplishment!
FOR THOSE OF YOU WITHOUT A SEWING MACHINE There’s no reason you shouldn’t create and enjoy these beautiful curtains. Just follow these steps and you will have gorgeous curtains hanging soon, sans sewing machine! • You will need: Iron-on hemming tape which can be purchased at your local sewing-store, a curtain rod, and fabric. • Measure the length and width for the desired look of your curtains. That means the width of your window frame, and length from the top of the frame to the floor, or until the sill. Leave eight inches extra in the width, and four inches extra in the length. • Cut your fabric to size. A good tip is to do it on the floor using a 60” ruler. Tip: try cutting it over a rug for perfect corners. • Cut the fabric down the center to form two panels. • Now it’s time to whip out your iron, along with your scissors, and trusty ironon hem tape. Since you want all four sides of each panel to have a nice finished edge, simply cut the hem tape to the length of each side of the panel and iron it in place ON THE BACK of the fabric, as close to the edge of the panel as possible. Tip: when ironing on hem tape, keep the clear side down and the paper side up; you never want your iron to touch the clear side or it’ll get all gooey. • After ironing that strip of hem tape in place on the edge of the panel, just give it about ten seconds to cool off a bit and get to work peeling back the paper, which should leave you with a strip of sticky stuff (it almost looks like clear double sided tape). • Without disturbing your little ribbon of stickiness, fold over the fabric so that it just covers the double-stick-tape-looking strip and iron that fold into place. • Do the same thing for the bottom edge of both panels. • Now for the rod pocket. You will stitch it by hand. Fold over your fabric from the top 3 inches, pin down, and stitch across ½ inch from the bottom, forming the rod pocket of 2 ½ inches. Since the purpose of the stitch is just to form a pocket to hold the rod it doesn’t have to be very fine, a stitch every inch is okay, just in and out. • Insert the curtain rod through the casing, hang the curtain, and distribute the fullness so the panel hangs evenly. Voila! Enjoy your curtains and the great feeling of accomplishment! Especially since you created it without a sewing machine!

FACTS ACROSS THE SPECTRUM • There tends to be more shades of green than any other in commercially available paint colors, because the human eye can distinguish more variations of green than of any other color. • Red and orange, green and blue… How many colors do you know? Even if you are a pro at hues and shades, and know the difference between crimson, cardinal, and coral, and periwinkle and powder blue, I’m sure you will still find Benjamin Moore’s 3,500 plus paint colors overwhelming. • Are you planning to use the paint collecting dust in your garage? About 10% of all paint we buy in the US is eventually thrown out, and the majority
of that is paint bought for residential projects. • The surface coverage of a gallon varies between 25 and 44 square yards depending on the density of the paint. • The oldest house paint was made of lime mixed with milk, and sometimes natural pigments. Even the White House was originally painted with a lime-based whitewash. • House painters and artists alike were once expected to grind their own pigments with a mortar and pestle, which may be why there was a time when only well-to-do people in the US would have had a painted house.
PAINTING LANDMARKS • It takes 570 gallons of paint to cover the exterior of the White House, and from the mid-20th Century, it was practice to repaint the White House every four years as part of the inaugural ceremonies! However, the progressive buildup of paint had made each successive layer less effective and more difficult to maintain. In honor of the mansion’s bicentennial celebration in 1989, there was a multi-year restoration project where 40-odd layers of paint were stripped away, and the White House exterior was repainted, the last time that happened. Over the decades, its look has changed several times with the application of a spectrum of paint colors. When it opened in 1889, the Eiffel Tower sported a reddish-brown color. A decade later, it was coated in yellow paint. The tower was also yellowbrown and chestnut brown before the adoption of the current, specially mixed “Eiffel Tower Brown” in 1968. Every seven years, painters apply 60 tons of paint to the tower to keep her looking young. The tower is painted in three shades, progressively lighter with elevation, in order to augment the structure’s silhouette against the canvas of the Parisian sky. • The Golden Gate Bridge has been the same color since it was erected. Its color is called International Orange. • When the Statue of Liberty was almost repainted: For the first hundred years, Lady Liberty stood proud and tall, but not without those who wanted to re-clothe her. In 1906, Congress appropriated $62,800 to paint her. Why? Because some people were distressed that a green patina (a film on the surface of metals like copper, which develop over a long period of time - often found on old pennies) had spread over her original coppery brown surface soon after 1900. Fortunately, the painting plan failed, and by 1920, the Statue of Liberty had turned the blueish-green she is today.

WHAT’S BEHIND THE RED DOOR? Have you ever seen a house with a red door? It might be more than just the owner’s preference for the color red. The first ones to paint their doors red were the Yidden in Mitzrayim, using the blood from the Korban Pesach to do that. Throughout history, red doors symbolized other things: WELCOME: In early American tradition, a red door symbolized to tired horse-andbuggy travelers that a home was a safe place to rest and stay. REFUGE: During the civil war, “safe homes” that were part of the Underground Railroad supposedly painted their doors red to guide escaped slaves to places of refuge and safety. MORTGAGE FREE: Scottish tradition is that homeowners paint their front door red to signify that they had paid off their mortgage. REMINDER: Although many claim Albert Einstein to be one of the most brilliant minds ever, he had his blind spots. Apparently, Einstein painted his front door red because he couldn’t remember which house was his without it.
DANGER IN THE PAINT If your home was built before 1978, there is a good chance it has lead-based paint. In 1978, the federal government banned the use of lead-containing paint in residential projects, but some states banned it even earlier. Lead in paint is one of the most common causes of lead poisoning. This is especially hazardous on surfaces where children can chew on — like window sills, windows, and banisters. If you live in a home that’s past its 38th birthday make sure all new paint is in excellent shape, so that the lead-based paint, especially in places that get a lot of wear and tear, is never exposed. Hanging Up Mezuzos
Clothing Rods
The first order of business in setting up a new home is putting up mezuzos! Tools You’ll Need: • Measuring tape • Pencil • Awl (a graduated spike for making holes) or a 1 ½ nail Preparation: Before hanging your mezuzos, you should protect the klafs from moisture and dust, particularly if they are outdoors. Using waxed, parchment, or baking paper, or heavy plastic (not Saran wrap or cling wrap), wrap the paper/plastic around the pre-rolled klaf. If you use tape to secure the paper/plastic, be careful it does not touch the klaf.

While silicon glue, epoxy glue, or contact cement may be used instead of nails or screws, double-sided foam tape is cleaner and quicker. Use one long strip of tape from the top to bottom of the mezuzah, or one piece at the top and another at the bottom (not just one in the center). Glue or tape should only be used with mezuzah covers
Tools You’ll Need: • Metal or wooden rod • 2 cup-shaped rod holders • Pencil • Drill and bit or awl • Plastic screw anchors matching the screw size • Screws • Level Step 1. Determine where to place the rod. Length: The length of the rod should be ½ inch shorter than the space it will fill. This allows ¼ inch for each cup holder. Depth: The rod should be hung at least 12-14 inches from the back wall of the closet so the clothing will not touch the wall. The clothes will also protrude from the rod at least 12-14 inches. (Coats are thicker than shirts.) It’s best to screw the supports for the rod into the vertical wooden studs behind the drywall. You

If you don’t have one, here are several ways you can locate them: There may be small “dimples” in the paint on the wall, formed by the nails used to attach the drywall to the studs. Studs are usually 16 inches apart, so try measuring from a corner, or a light switch. There’s also the “knock test,” which involves tapping at different spots on the wall. If you hear a hollow sound, the spot is between studs. When you hear a solid thud, that is a stud. Studs are about 1.5 inches wide. If you cannot find the studs, you may use anchors to support the screws. Height: Most clothing rods are hung 45 inches from the floor to hold shirts and pants, allowing room on the floor for shoes. Fulllength coats, dresses, and robes may require a height of 60-70 inches. Measure your clothing on hangers, especially if someone in your home is very tall. Also, if the family is shorter than average, or someone is in a wheelchair, you may want to lower the bar. For children’s clothing, or to accommodate two poles, adjust the heights as required. If you are able to use a stud, drill holes into the marks you have made for the screws. The bit should be slightly narrower than the width of the screw. If there is no stud, use a punch (awl) with a hammer, and insert a plastic anchor to secure the screw. Step 4. Hold the rod holder in place and drive in the screws. Step 5. Place one end of the rod on the holder. Have someone hold up the other end of the pole. Place the level on the rod, and find the spot on the opposite wall where the second rod holder will go. Mark it with a pencil. Repeat Steps 2-4 for the second holder. Step 6. Slip the rod onto the holders. Now you’ve got the hang of it!

“Every two or three days, day camp is at a different girl’s home. We have the same counselors at every house; they teach us so many new cheers and play sports with us. We do so many fun activities and the most amazing projects! I really don’t feel like I’m missing out by not going to a regular day camp,” I overheard my nine-year-old, Malky*, gushing to her cousin. The idea of Camp Seviva — as our round-robin day camp is called — was actually developed over the last couple of years.

When my oldest daughter was ready for day camp, we put together a group of eight mothers in the neighborhood. Each mother hosted a week of day camp in her house and only had to pay for the expenses incurred while doing her days, saving each mother a few hundred dollars of day camp expenses. At times, I was participating in two or three such groups; one for each of my girls. Summer tends to be financially straining. With both school tuition payments and day camp
costs due simultaneously, many mothers search for alternative ways to keep their heads above the financial deluge. With each additional child to place, the expenses multiply. Two years ago, my oldest daughter completed third grade. I wanted to continue the roundrobin camp, but hosting a day camp for a week or more can be both exhausting and time-consuming. After thinking about it at length, I came up with an idea, one that just needed some thorough organization, but was not

I contacted some of the mothers who had participated in the past round-robins, and some were interested in doing it again. With the help of two other dedicated women, we recruited the last couple of girls and mothers needed to reach our goal of sixteen children. At our initial meeting I presented my ideas, incorporating new suggestions. Our final arrangement worked wonderfully. Every mother was assigned the first half or second half of a week. (Either two days or two days and a Friday). Each mother was also assigned three or four times of transportation to and from the pool, or for trips. We hired two counselors to add to the spirit, and to help out with the program planned for the day by the host mother. Each mother had to pay for the supplies she needed during her days. There was also a minimal cost to cover the counselor’s wages and pool expenses. We worked with a theme, and at each house the girls created a page for a memorable scrapbook. “I couldn’t run a day camp all summer, but two days I can do,” Esty Klein’s mother commented. And boy did she do it well!
Every mother put her personal strengths and talents into their assigned days with refreshing vigor. The day camp was truly a hit! “My favorite part of Camp Seviva is when we went to Holland. We went to a park and waded in the ‘Dutch Canals.’ A few of us fell in and got soaked!” Leah described effusively. “Then when we went to Switzerland,” Esther Malka added, “We made ‘Swiss Chocolates’ for Shabbos. We also made Israeli salad and dips when we went to Eretz Yisroel.” “I loved making French Fries in France! My mother was so surprised when I came home with my hair styled in a French braid!” Chaya Leah shared. “I feel like my Sara Leah got the optimal day camp experi-
year, and I would love to do that again. The only problem is that most my class is going to the day camp linked to our school. Many of the girls went there together last year as well. They discuss it all day in school. It seems like they will have a great time there and I feel left out. ” Luckily, Malky was mature enough to see the merits of Camp Seviva. Although it is challenging for her, she is strong enough not to just follow the crowds blindly. This summer I would love to keep Camp Seviva going again. It is interesting how quickly word travels. People call me on their own about joining. Women love to hear of a more affordable, but equally fun summer option for their daughters. When I contacted Mrs. Gordon about whether she and her daughter will be joining again, she replied, “Definitely count us in! My problem is that my older daughter, who went to a popular day camp last year with most of her class, is begging me to do a round-robin day camp for her age as well. I just don’t have the

From the icy waters of Antarctica, to the mountains of Tibet, and the jungles of South America, leeches have plagued people for centuries. In the minds of many, leeches are creepy, crawly, and repulsive critters. Research, however, has proven that they are more than just pests. The medicinal leech contains properties which stump the minds of many. Let’s draw the curtain to unveil the mystery and fear surrounding these fascinating creatures.
What Are Leeches? Leeches are simply defined as “freshwater amphibians.” They are wormlike creatures that reside in lakes, ponds, and damp marshlands. Far from handsome in their brownish-khaki skin, which is dotted or lined in a dull orange, they boast fine acrobatic skills as they perform in the water. In her natural habitat, the leech attaches to different reptiles or animals. With her microscopic 270 teeth, she draws blood to survive. One of the many species is the Medicinal Leech. In Latin, it beers the name Hirudo Medicinalis, and is surprisingly the only live organism that was distinguished as “medicinal” in Latin. For centuries, Medicinal Leeches were used by physicians and pharmacologists to heal a large scope of diseases.
Leeches: An Ancient Favorite Medicinal leeches were originally only seen in the patrician courts of the Egyptian pharaohs, Indian sultans, and Chinese emperors. They were exclusively reserved for the blue-blooded; the locals were prohibited from

curing their frail and sick with this rare commodity. As the years advanced, so did the realization that leeches can be harvested in bulk for the greater public. Slowly, it became customary for the rural women and young maidens to wade in the water sources to gather the leeches which attached themselves to their legs. After selling the leeches to a local physician, they toddled home humming a little ditty to the sound of coins jingling in their pockets. Leeches became more and more popular with time, and proved to effectively cure multiple diseases. The demand to only be treated by these “miracle healers” grew by leaps and bounds. Throughout the nineteenth century, when France was considered the center of medical learning, French physicians used a hundred million leeches annually. The emperor Napoleon imported nearly six million leeches in one year to treat his soldiers! Because of this huge demand, the price skyrocketed. In 1806, one franc (roughly equivalent to $1) bought eighty leeches. Fifteen years later, the same amount of money bought four of them! In fact, a jolting fifty-six million leeches were sold in Parisian hospitals alone, between the years of 1829-1836! In Russia, twenty-seven million leeches were used in the hospitals annually, while all the way in England, between seven and nine million were sold! Medicinal leeches were in such high demand at this time that they nearly became extinct. England and Russia even passed game laws to protect them. Export regulations were also estab-

lished to restrict the amount of leeches that could be sold. With today’s technology, procuring leeches is much simpler, safer, and definitely more economical. Leeches are farmed in large tanks and raised in a sterile environment; thus consumers can rest assured that the leeches aren’t contaminated and hadn’t drawn blood from an infected animal. Leeches were originally only used for bloodletting, with the astounding biological compounds (and their healing properties) being discovered at a later date.
Medicinal Leeches That Heal: No, it is not the uniform way most people treat many illnesses, yet it sometimes has proven to be the only way. People who are concerned about the medical use of leeches are pleased when they see that the leeches work, and work painlessly. The mother of a fiveyear-old girl that came to me said that she got chills the first few times leeches were placed on her daughter’s infected hand. The girl though, didn’t mind leeches at all. In fact, she named one “Libby the Leech!” Surgeons using microscopes can reattach body parts by sewing together tiny nerves and arteries. They use sutures so fine, that they are barely visible to the naked eye. Often though, veins are too delicate to reconnect. As a result, fresh blood flows into the other body part through the repaired arteries, but there
is no route for return. Blood then pools in the reattached part, which causes swelling and pain. The pressure can cause clots to form in the blood vessels, stopping the flow of blood, and preventing cells from the reattached part from getting oxygen and nourishment. If this condition continues, the reattached body part will be lost. Instead, some surgeons and physicians apply leeches to restore venous circulation in cosmetic, plastic, and reconstructive surgery. Medicinal Leeches are popular in hospitals throughout the world, and have saved thousands of people. Since the 17th century, scientists have been trying to synthetically reproduce the complex medicinal properties of the leech. To date, no analogues produced with genetic engineering can substitute the natural hirudin, as well as the other biological compounds. Hirudo (leech) therapy may seem melodramatic and fantastical, yet leeches are used today in many modern hospitals throughout Europe and Asia. card will be reported on your credit report as well. So let’s say your friend has a credit card that’s five years old, and they call their credit card company and request an additional card with your name. The credit card company would ask for your name and social, and send out a card with your name (to the address of the primary card holder). The next month, when the credit card company will send its monthly credit behavior update to the bureaus, they will report it in your name as well. This way your report will all of a sudden receive information as if you’ve had a credit card for five years. There is a caveat to this approach, for this may link you
to joined accounts and “contaminate” your score if your “credit host” ruins or messes up with his credit in the future; furthermore, any past negative activity on the card will immediately appear on your report. There are many more details to in this approach. Be aware that it takes approximately six months of credit history to receive a score in the first place. However, do not knock, ring, call, and use the front, side, or back door. Applying too much for credit will only lessen your chances of approval. As explained in previous articles, too many inquiries will ruin your opportunity to be approved. It may take some time, but you will ultimately enter the echelons of credit-card wielding people.
Upwards on the Credit Ladder If you are a card-carrying (pun intended) credit member you will surely want to protect and build your credit. Credit is like landing a desirable position in a prestigious firm. You will always strive to perform and gain your boss’s approval. This will move you upwards on the firm’s hierarchy, make you deserving of promotions, and ensure special perks, bonuses and increase in raise. Having credit is not enough, it is like getting that plum job; but scoring well on the credit ladder puts you in a great place and will enable you to harness your credit power. Being punctual and on top of
things is the key component to optimal work performance. • Remember to make timely payments. Some banks even offer reminders through their online banking portal that can send you emails and text messages when payment is due. Do not be lax! Paying on time makes or breaks your credit. Do you have a specific date when you always receive your paycheck? Just set your credit card payment due date around your desirable date. Banks will let you choose your best monthly date of payment. Having the date of your choice for your due date might help you pay on time. • Using more than 30% of your credit is entering dangerous territory. Please note, the banks do not care how much money you’ve spent on your card. Rather what percentage you’ve spent of your available credit. So while one person might have a $5,000 bill on a $15,000 credit line, and his credit utilization will still be in
good standing,someone using $400 out of a $500 credit line — that would be considered an 80 percent utilization — would almost make his chances of future approvals zero, if this is his only card. The main factor to look out for is to focus on not utilizing more than 30 percent of your available credit. (MenTRAVEL tally combineTRUSTED all your available CREDIT REWARDS & APPLICATIONS MILEAGE credit among all your cards and make sure that your spending does not exceed 30 percent of that.)Your available credit line can always be seen on your monthly statement, in your online profile, or listened on your bank’s automated telephone system. • When you apply for credit, the bank in question performs a Hard Pull; they check your credit report. This will stay on your report for two years. Many inquiries suggest that you are a flailing, risky borrower. Thus, credit experts recommend keeping it at lower than five to six inquiries a year and giving your credit the space of three to four months between inquiries. • A credit or charge card will suffice for credit, although having a loan or mortgage will definitely raise your credit. A
mix of several types of credit will increase your score and have a positive impact on your report. A credit card, mortgage, and car lease are all different types of credit. While credit card debt is considered revolving, a mortgage is considered fixed. A credit card payment changes, while a mortgage payment is fixed monthly. • Your first card establishes your trust, credit perseverance, and credit viability. EVERY CHILD IS AN ARTIST When I complimented my toddler on her latest scribbles, my husband looked amused. Later, he asked me, “Is that all she can do?” I assured him that scribbles are perfectly appropriate for an eighteenmonth-old, and she still had a way to go before producing her own drawings. At one year, you can start introducing crayons. When your toddler has mastered the pincer grasp, he’ll be ready to grasp a crayon well enough to make marks with it. Around this time, toddlers will use crayons primarily for random and unintentional scrawling. By eighteen months, you’ll start to see blocks of color and more definitive marks and patterns. At age two, his scribbles will become more recognizable, and will likely fill up more space on the paper. At this age, crayon strokes start representing something to your little artist; my daughter likes to write “Mitzvah Notes.” Fine motor red flags include: Your child isn’t able to deliberately release an object he’s holding by a year, still uses a fisted grasp to hold a crayon at eighteen months, doesn’t use a pincer grasp by eighteen months, or can’t imitate a drawing of a vertical line by two years. Introduce new art ideas and your child will jump at the opportunity to get creative and get those little fingers ready to write!

• Make your own homemade paint. Mix 1 cup salt, 1 cup flour, 1 cup water, and food coloring. • Paint with a sponge! If you’re feeling creative, make a rainbow on the sponge, by pouring a few strips of paint on it. • Water is an awesome means of painting. There’s something magical about it as it dries! Give children a bucket of water, a brush and let them paint the house and driveway. • Try this cool mirror-image craft. Paint on a paper, then fold in half. Watch the painting double and the colors mix! • Use spray bottles and squirt colored water to paint something! • Put masking tape on a piece of paper, paint the entire page, and then remove the tape to reveal the white paper design underneath. My friend put the tape in the shape of a dreidel and created a cute craft with her tot. • Bundle crayons or markers together with rubber bands, and use them to color on a large sheet of paper. • Use dot painters, markers, or liquid watercolors on paper towels, then spray with water and watch the colors spread out. Alternatively, show your child how to use an eyedropper or a baster to drip water onto the colors.

• Stick collage materials to a large sheet of contact paper and put on a window. • Make designs with white crayons on white paper. Then let the children paint over it with watercolors to reveal the magic design. When commenting on art, there are four reactions to avoid. Complimenting: “That’s beautiful” etc. I do this all the time, but it is way too overused, and doesn’t address effort. Valuing: “I like that.” Art shouldn’t only be produced to please you. You are showing that you value the product, not the process. Questioning: “What is that?” Toddlers who are scribbling can’t verbalize what they drew. Usually, it’s best to just ask them to “Tell me
about it.” Correcting: There is no one right way to art. So what is the best way to react to children’s art? Notice their artwork, but really notice it and comment on it. That’s it. Some things you can point out are: 1. Color 2. Space used 3. Lines and how many 4. Amount of materials used 5. Pattern and placement 6. Use of paintbrush or other materials Now I tell my daughter, “Wow, your colorful picture looks so happy!” or “I see you drew a blue line at the corner with the crayon.”

I love drawing and painting, be it with charcoal, pencil, acrylics, or oil — any medium is fine with me. It has a calming effect, and I find art therapeutic. So when the principal of a school called me up one morning, and said she had a job for me, I listened. “We have a major project going on in our school, on the subject of “kol haneshama tehalel Kah,” and I would like a massive mural painted on the wall of the main hall. But it must be something breathtaking.” She then went into the details: the hours I
Imagine what we could do with $1,500! could paint, when it must be finished, and then the pay — a whopping $1,500. I was ecstatic! A massive paycheck for doing something I love — and it would only take me five afternoons. I couldn’t wait until my husband came home so I could discuss it with him and return the principal’s call with a positive answer. But my husband put a damper on all my excitement. “Think about it,” he said. “You work in school the whole day and come home with just two minutes to spare before the children barge in. You barely make it through the afternoon with homework, supper, bath-time, and bed, and you still want to squeeze in a full four-hour afternoon project? How on earth will you survive, and who will look after the kids while you’re gone?” I tried a different tactic. “Imagine what we could do with $1,500. We could buy that six-door cupboard we so desperately need, since our other one is falling to bits. We could close the open balcony to make an extra room for the older girls to have some privacy when they bring their friends over. Hashem is sending this opportunity straight into my lap; how can we say no?” But still, he was adamant. “We’ll manage without that money. It’s too much of a sacrifice to pay.” Indeed he was right, but I would not take “no” for an answer; I just had to find a way of taking on that job. I could already see that stunning finished mural, and was dreaming of purchasing all those things I had pushed off for months and months. “I must find a way to make all the arrangements and make it work,” I told myself. I asked the neighbors if they

could look after my children in the afternoons, and booked babysitters for suppertime, baths, and bed. Homework would wait until the week was over, and I would fabricate some excuses for the teachers. Finally, with everything in place, I managed to convince (or force) my husband to agree. Having no choice, he grudgingly allowed me to take on the project. Sunday afternoon, I set out with a happy gait towards the school. I set out my paints and tools, and began sketching the picture. For four hours straight I worked, and then trudged home, exhausted. I definitely could not complain to my husband; I knew what his answer would be. Thankfully, he didn’t say a word about my miserable state. It wasn’t an easy week for any of my household members (nor for the neighbors for that matter), but for the next four days I continued to work on the project, enjoying every minute, and the end result was an absolutely spectacular mural (if I may say so myself). I was stopped in the corridors of the school to receive some well-earned praise. The principal was beaming. “I didn’t dream it would come out so professional and real!” she complimented me. She shook my hand warmly and passed me the envelope with the coveted $1,500. I bounced all the way home and proudly showed the money to my husband. He gave me a lopsided smile and we fixed a time to go and choose our new cupboard. That evening, we heard a massive explosion coming from the

kitchen. It turned out that the oven, which had baked some chocolate chip cookies a mere 10 minutes before, had exploded with a roar. I have never seen any such thing in my life; the glass door had smashed to a million splinters, but baruch Hashem, no one was in the kitchen when it happened. And so instead of going out to choose a cupboard, we went to the electrical store and chose a new oven, at a price of $600. Lucky I took on that job, I thought. From where else would I have had

searching for the source of the mabul. But I could not find any open tap, nor any burst pipe. I looked up at the ceiling: Maybe it’s a flood from the neighbor’s apartment above me? But there was no sign of dripping from any ceiling. My husband rushed in with a plumber who, with a special gadget, found a burst pipe under the flooring. He turned off the water main, and told us grimly that it was a major job. “I will have to pull up the tiles in the bathroom, change the pipes, let the area dry – which could take over a week — and then put in new flooring. It will cost you at least $900.” That was when the real sacrifice of taking on the job hit me. It wasn’t just those five days of craziness; it was the terror of the oven explosion, getting all that water out of the house, throwing out stuff that could not be salvaged, living with one bathroom for a full week until the area dried and more… If only I had listened to my husband…
I would not take “no” for an answer; I just had to find a way of taking on that job. money to pay for this unexpected expense? Well, the story did not end there. Just a couple of days later, I walked in from work and was shocked to see the whole house flooded. I stood there in fright, not knowing what to do first. Where is all this water coming from? I threw my bag onto the couch, and ran from room to room

by Ann Zeilingold With spring finally here for most of the nation, prospective homebuyers can look at houses and condos without traipsing through snow and ice. Better weather, plus the traditional belief that families search for homes so they can move in between one school year and the next, makes spring a major home buying season in much of the country. The biggest challenge facing homebuyers in many markets may be finding a home to buy. Our market is a sellers’ market. A sellers’ market means that buyers have to be smart and prepared if they want to get the right house at the right price. Agents suggest that prospective buyers start by looking online at homes. A desirable listing may be sold in days or hours, meaning there is no time to organize financing or mull over preferred features before making an offer. Here are ten tips for buying a home this spring: 1. Get a mortgage pre-qualification, or even better, pre-approval before you start shopping. This helps you know what you can afford and makes your offer much stronger in the eyes of a seller. In a competitive situation, you may even consider waiving the mortgage contingency clause, which is something you want to avoid unless you are sure you can get the loan. Sometimes, it’s even advisable to see if you can go in without a financial contingency. Today’s market in certain areas is dominated by cash. Expect to provide lots of documentation to get a mortgage. The more you provide upfront, the more ironclad your pre-approval will be. 2. Find a good agent. Using a real estate agent costs buyers nothing because the seller pays the real estate commission. Ask friends, family and co-workers for refer-

3. Do your research. Research neighborhoods and asking prices for the type of home you want. But you should keep in mind that you’re not always getting a complete picture of what your home will go for. Separate your needs from your wants. 4. Expect to provide lots of documentation to get a mortgage. Since the recession, mortgage lenders have become much stricter about documentation, income verification, and other paperwork. Wellqualified buyers could still get a mortgage, with rates for 30-year loans at 3.625 percent, last week. Borrowing has become much, much more difficult,. It has become a much more cumbersome process. 5. Separate your needs from your
wants. In a competitive market, most buyers find they have to compromise on location, amenities, or condition of home. It’s easier to make a choice when you know going in which features you must have and which you’d like to have but can live without. Be flexible and be prepared to compromise. 6. Be ready to move fast. A welllocated house in good condition and priced right will sell quickly, sometimes the first day it goes on the market. You need to be ready to make a decision when you find a home you like. “You have to be prepared to act fast because we’re seeing bidding wars,” Tirtza Beer of Realty Teams says. “If they don’t know what they want, the property is going to be gone.” 7. The days of getting a house at a steep discount are long gone. That doesn’t mean you can’t ever get a good deal on a house that needs work, is in a less popular location, or otherwise is in less demand. But in a sellers’ market, there is usually very little negotiating room on price.

Keep in mind that this is a huge investment. While most buyers may have to compromise on some of the features they wanted, they shouldn’t settle for a home they don’t like. If you don’t find the right home this year, maybe you should rent, and try again later, rather than make a purchase you’ll regret.
