ROUND THE BLOCK
I had to nod in agreement as I read about the round-robin day camp. My fourth child, ka”h, is now two years old, and I’ve never paid a dollar for playgroup. In whichever neighborhood I was (I’m in my third rental apartment), I always organized a round-robin daycare system with my neighbors. Five of us each have one day a week where we take care of five children and the other four days we get free child care arrangements. It’s a winwin situation. C.B.

NOT EVERY DIET IS FOR EVERYONE
While I felt that your articles about going gluten-free are great for those who suffer from Celiac Disease or other forms of gluten intolerance, I feel that it is important to note that giving up such a major food source as wheat or other gluten-containing products can cause more harm than good at times. Having lived a part of my life as a raw food vegan and another part of it on the SCD diet that eschews any form complex carbohydrate, I can attest that there are multiple problems with going gluten-free, one of which is the constant
hunger. As the Torah says, “Ein kemach, ein Torah.” When a person is constantly in the pursuit of food, feeling that there is hole in her stomach, how can someone possibly focus on anything but food? In fact, I know of somebody that has her perfectly healthy (non-Celiac) family on a gluten-free diet, and the children are obsessed with food. Daily they knock on the neighbors’ doors, begging for a slice of whole wheat bread -- contraband in their home! Not only that, but they chase the other children down the block, groveling for a taste of the other children’s snacks. On the school bus these children crawl on the floor, licking up the remains they find there. Is this healthy? Is always being hungry, feeling deprived, and hyper-focusing on dieting the ideal? Additionally, those who stick to the diet usually overcompensate with highprotein foods. Proteins, when eaten in moderation are perfectly fine, but when over-eaten, burden the kidneys. I actually know of one perfectly healthy woman that after being on a high-protein diet for a couple of years, died. (And no, she had no previous problem with her kidneys.) Yes. Tragic. The key word is moderation, in everything. That includes Continued on page 42

Continued from page 40 gluten. And that includes moderation in dieting as well. While living a healthy life is a fantastic goal, it should not be taken to extreme measures — and that is what oftentimes happens when a healthy person cuts out a major food group. The bottom line: set a diet that you can live by, not be chained down to and burdened by. One that gives you energy to enjoy life, but doesn’t take up continuous brainspace. It’s about going back to normative eating, with healthy, whole foods and normal-sized portions. That is the only way for the average person to be a physically, mentally, and emotionally healthy human-being in my opinion. Name Withheld
RAISING MY VOICE, NOT THE RENT
Dear Monsey Residents, If you are searching for an apartment to rent, you will probably sweat in agreement as you read this letter. Any parent who is zoche to walk a child under the chuppah davens that the new couple be zoche to build a bayis ne’eman b’Yisroel. How is a young couple able to pay a monthly rent of $1,450 plus utilities? Why should a choson and kallah go to their chuppah without knowing how on earth (maybe couples ought to move to the moon?) they will cover part of their rent expense? I am a landlord, too. My tenant is paying $1,000 including utilities for a spacious four-room apartment. Yes, I do Continued on page 44

THERE’S A BETTER WAY TO DO LASER.
INTRODUCING
NEW LASER BREAKTHROUGH Loved for its luxurious performance, laser is now a positive, not painful experience. Enthusiastically embraced by women and teens.
Talk of Town
Continued from page 42 have a huge mortgage payment; my husband and I are both in chinuch, earning a meager monthly salary. It isn’t about our expenses. If you have huge bills (hopefully for healthy, normal expenses of a large family), three hundred dollars ain’t making a huge difference. If you are lucky to balance your checkbook monthly, mah tov u’mah naim. Thank Hashem a million times, give tzedakah, and balance your checkbook with a few dollars less. Why haven’t some of us been sucked into the fad of raising the rent? Because we believe that every Rosh Hashana, the Eibishter inscribes exactly how much money we will have (or won’t have) in our pockets at the end of each month. The exact amount of cash flow is destined to be. You cannot make an extra dollar without the Ribono shel Olam willing so. Every dollar that is bashert for you to earn will be. So why be the overpriced landlord when you can be a mentch? Dear landlord, Klal Yisroel is known to be rachmanim b’nei rachmanim. We are a generation of chesed. Why not be compassionate and lower your tenants’ rent? You might just be zoche to have some uncomfortable expenses disappear. Being a considerate landlord and enabling a young couple to build a new home with harchavas hada’as is chesed. Tizku L’mitzvos, Someone’s Landlord
THE OTHER SIDE OF THE COIN
The inbox of your Pesach edition contained a letter from C.W. stating that someone took her cleaning lady before Pesach. I was in a similar situation and would like everyone to realize that we need to be dan l’kaf z’chus… I needed help (not cleaning) for Pesach and was recommended by a friend to call a specific person. When I called the person, the first question I asked was, “Are you available?” After discussing the work and price (which was within normal range), she told me she was available. As it turned out I did not need her, and she told me it would be no problem; she would just go back to her regular job. She had told that employer that she would not be available to come for the time period that I wanted her. (Obviously, she was making more money through me.) I can only say how disturbed I was that I almost took away help from someone else, and how grateful I am that it did not happen. Please be dan l’kaf z’chus. You never know what’s on the other side of the coin.

New neighbors had just moved from out of town into a furnished apartment next door. They had bought a condo, but it was still in the middle of being built. In the meantime, school was starting and they decided to rent this apartment so their children could begin in their new schools on the first day of the year. So, although they would have preferred to move straight into their new home on the other side of town, they felt this was the best way to deal with the situation. Later, it was revealed to them why they had needed to start off in this furnished apartment…. Over time, I became friendly with these people. I had made several shidduchim in the past and was impressed with their daughter who was “in the parsha.” I suggested someone for her. Her mother researched the boy and his family, and came back to me that it wasn’t shayach, and she explained why. As a result, the idea popped into my head that perhaps her daughter would be perfect for my own brother. I redt the shidduch to both parties, and Baruch Hashem it worked out!

WeighSmarter “choo-choo train” their food. The kids enjoy the ride while they get in the habit of chewing their food well, which is a great way of preventing childhood obesity.
THE BENEFITS OF CHEWING YOUR FOOD: 1. Chewing triggers digestion. Digestion all starts with chewing. When you chew your food thoroughly, you begin to break it down mechanically into smaller and smaller particles. You also secrete saliva while you chew, which coats your food with the enzymes amylase and lipase. These enzymes help digest fats and starches right in your mouth.
By Esty Weiss
The Digestion-WeightLoss Connection The last time you sat down for a meal or enjoyed a snack, did you give any thought to how long you chewed your food? Probably not, since most people chew their food out of habit or as an unconscious reflex. As soon as a piece of food enters your mouth, you probably swallow it quickly without much chewing at all – at least when you’re trying to get your kids out the door on time. The chewing process is actually extremely important! It’s the very first step in the digestive process, and you’re in for a lot of trouble if you skip it. Take this as an example: Have you ever tried grinding up big chunks of food in your blender? Unless you have a commercial machine, my guess is that you had trouble grinding it to a smooth consistency. The smaller the pieces, the easier the machine can handle the grinding process. Now, I believe Hashem gave us teeth for a reason (maybe you’ve already lost some of yours), but it’s important to chew your food at least twenty times before you swallow it! I know you are busy, and that if you find yourself with some extra time, chances are that you won’t want to spend it chewing your food. However, chewing is of great importance. In fact, I encourage mothers of young kids to train their children when they eat to

2. Chewing kick-starts your digestive tract. Chewing triggers the digestive process by alerting the stomach to produce stomach acid. Many people suffer from a lack of stomach acid, and as a result, they face digestive issues like gas, bloating, heartburn, constipation, etc. Without enough stomach acid, food particles stay too large. The acid in the stomach literally turns food into a liquid substance, so it’s well worth being aware of how many people take anti-acid when in fact they are simply “missing” stomach acids as a result of not chewing their food properly. The next time you want to reach for TUMS, think of the “choochoo train” and see how this little difference will have a tremendous impact on your digestion. It’s free, and it’s

definitely worth a try. 3. Chewing leads to increased energy and better sleep. Chewing is critical to disease prevention. By chewing your food completely, you support your body’s digestive tract, which will allow for better nutrient absorption. So, you can expect increased energy, improved sleep, and better focus as a result of properly chewing your food. 4. Improved chewing can lead to weight loss. You’ve probably heard it multiple times: It takes 20 minutes for your brain to signal that it’s full to your stomach. When you eat too quickly, you miss out on
a natural cue that you’ve had enough food. By chewing every bite of food at least 20 times, you will automatically eat way less. Once I heard about a person who lost lots of weight, and the only thing he claims he did was chew every bite of food until it became liquid in his mouth before he swallowed it. It sounds so simple, right? It is, but it takes time – and few of us feel we have the time to slow down and completely chew our food! 5. Chewing helps us enjoy our food. Think about when you enjoy your food the most. Is it when it’s in your stomach, or when you savor every taste and texture
in your mouth? Some people eat so quickly that it becomes really easy to gulp down a large bag of chips or half a cake in a very short amount of time, without even being aware of where all the food went. Did you enjoy this meal? Probably not. So, the next time you make a bracha, enjoy every bite, and see how your digestion improves. The results will truly amaze you. Stay tuned for next week’s article on how stress can affect weight loss.

Parshas Behar
By Rebbetzin Malka Teitelbaum
“Hi Avi, how was work today?” “Good, Baruch Hashem.” Miriam looked at Avi quizzically, and asked, “Anything unusual happen today? You have an extra sparkle in your eyes.” “It was a pretty typical day, except one thing. I had the z’chus to help someone today. You know Chaim Weiss from the fish store? I noticed he was looking troubled, so I asked him if I could help. It turns out that he was faltering a bit financially, and it was really weighing him down. So I offered to loan him money to help him get through this rough patch. He really lit up. I’m pretty sure he’ll be able to turn around his financial situation and pay me back, but even if not – I know I did a big mitzvah.” “Wow, Avi, it’s just like Rebbetzin Shapiro talked about in her shiur this morning! She said that this week’s Parsha discusses the mitzvah to lend or give money to help lift a person out of a difficult financial situation.” “Yes, indeed. My timing is perfect, as always,” Avi quipped. “And what about you, Miriam? How was your day?” “Pretty typical, except…” Miriam sighed. “Well, you know how I’ve been telling you about this lady Chavy? I feel so bad – she really seems to be struggling lately. She is weakening in her Yiddishkeit, and she really seems to be unhappy as well.”
62 / T HE MONS E Y V IE W
Avi looked at Miriam with a mischievous smile. “It seems the same posuk in this week’s Parsha applies to both of us, Miriam.” Miriam looked startled. “How so?” Avi began to explain… “It says in this week’s Parsha, ‘V’chi yamuch achicha… – If your brother becomes destitute and
The Yismach Yisroel extends this idea to matters of ruchnius, urging us to assist a person who is struggling spiritually, or from depression and despair. his hand falters among you, you shall support him…’ (Vayikra 25:35) Rashi explains that this posuk is enjoining us to support a person while his hand is still faltering – before he collapses. He compares this to a donkey that is faltering under a heavy load. While the load is still on the donkey, one person can hold it in place. However, if it should fall to the ground, even five people could not lift it back up. “In other words, we should help a person with his financial problems before they become overwhelming. For example, if
a person is struggling to pay his mortgage, we should help him stay current on his payments before he ends up in foreclosure. To raise a few thousand dollars for the man would not be so difficult, and one generous person could give what is needed. However, if the man would lose his home to foreclosure, even five people could not bail him out. Likewise, if a man needs ten thousand dollars to keep his business afloat, it is far better to provide him with the funds now and keep his business running, than allow him to go out of business and suddenly have no means with which to support his family, which would increase his financial need many times over. “This mitzvah is pretty straightforward regarding matters of gashmius. The Yismach Yisroel extends this idea to matters of ruchnius, urging us to assist a person who is struggling spiritually, or from depression and despair. In addition to the above posuk, the Yismach Yisroel quotes another posuk in this week’s Parsha: ‘Ki yamuch achicha… – If your brother becomes destitute and sells some of his inherited property, his redeemer who is related to him shall come and redeem what his brother sold…’ (Vayikra 25:25) The Yismach Yisroel explains that a person’s ‘inherited property’ is his love for Hashem, which has been passed down to
us from the Avos. A person can falter spiritually and become so depressed about it that may feel he ‘sold’ some of this inherited love for Hashem to his yetzer hara. Another person can then come and lift his spirits, helping to ignite the spark within him, thus ‘redeeming’ him. “It is far better and far easier to address a person’s doubts or lift their spirits when they are only slightly down, than to wait until the situation worsens, chas v’shalom. A desire is easier to address than a ‘taste,’ and a taste is easier to address than a habit, and a habit is easier to address than an addiction. In matters of emotional health as well, the same concept applies. I once read an interview with a member of Misaskim, who explained that addressing a child’s trauma immediately after his loss could help prevent the need for extensive therapy and medication later on. “The Ohr Hachaim HaKadosh takes this concept even further, extending it to oneself. He interprets the first posuk above as follows. ‘If your brother becomes destitute’ refers to a person who is poor in ruchnius, lacking in Torah and mitzvos. The ‘brother’ is the neshama. ‘And his hand falters’ means that his inner light is dimming. ‘Among you’ means that the neshama lives together with the body, whose desires pull him down. ‘You shall support him’ means you should be mechazek yourself to do teshuva to lift your ‘brother’ back up.” Miriam blinked at Avi. “Wow, Avi, that’s really beautiful, and I see how it applies to my situation with Chavy. What do you suggest I do for her?” Avi smiled at Miriam. “Didn’t you just tell me that you learned about this week’s Parsha in Rebbetzin Shapiro’s shiur? Why don’t you invite Chavy to go with you, and then take her out for coffee after?” “That’s a beautiful idea Avi. I’ll call her right now.”

Q&A
One Halachah at a Time By Rebbetzin Y. Weissmandl
Q
May I open a wrapper with words if I try to be very careful, even though I know that in the past I have inadvertently torn through the lettering?
A
It is assur to tear into any letters on any bags of foods because of the issur of mochek. One may tear between words or even between the letters of the words, even if it breaks up the word. However, even if one has the intention to not tear the actual letter, it may be very difficult not to... For example with a Splenda sachet, which has the letters very close to the opening, one has to try one’s utmost not to tear the letters, but if it does tear, it is okay to eat the contents of the bag — as long as it’s used right away and is not left for later use. Additionally, there are a large variety of food wrappers; for instance, franks, potato chip bags, or Splenda, that have print, and may be opened on Shabbos, but care should be taken to not make them into a useable keli during opening. One should not intentionally make a nice, clean tear in order to be able to keep these bags for future use (as is the case with the Israeli milk bags). This halacha also applies to cakes or cookies that have designs made out of fondant or cream, or letters iced on top. One may eat them, even if the lettering or pictures become erased in the process, but one may not cut into them and eat them later. For example, if one fashions a piece of dough into the shape of a key and puts it on the shlissel challah, one may cut into it and eat it right away. One may cut into designs or logos embedded into the food which are not fashioned from an added ingredient.

Recap: Chaim Elazar faces consequences at his yeshivah, even as he is still recuperating in his hospital bed. Sara calls the Rav to ask for his help to keep her daughter, Tehilla, in school, and is informed that Tehilla just doesn’t make the grade.
When Bracha Esther went for her seminary interview, Sara had bought her daughter an expensive sweater, elegant, with fine, delicate stitches that bespoke nobility and grace. Bracha Esther had paused at the mezuzah and her sweater snagged on a jutting nail head. Before she had even turned around, the sweater was no more, row after row of yarn, unraveling in layers. That was life right now. When Sara came home, the girls were all there already, supposedly watching over the young ones. Shoes and sweaters were all over, draped on the kitchen chairs, strewn about the foyer. Rivky was making peanut chews. “We’re starved!” she sang in that preadolescent tune. “There’s nothing to eat!” Sara hadn’t done her weekly shopping. She hadn’t prepared supper. She hadn’t even taken care of herself and she was so tired, cranky even. “Where did you get Karo syrup?” she demanded of Rivky. “We never buy corn syrup.” “I borrowed it. From Teller.” Sara could only stare at her innocent, sweet-faced daughter. Inside of her, unnamed emotions rattled like an elevated railway train leaving the station. “Teller?” “The new neighbor.” “We need some real food,” was what Sara finally said. She opened the fridge. It was somewhat sorry, a half-eaten apple taking up most of the middle shelf. The freezer didn’t hold too much either. There was a stack of emergency frozen suppers in her freezer, but it’d take forever to warm up and would be a battle with Tehilla and the boys at the supper table. “Send some of the peanut chews to the neighbors,” she told Rivky. “A housewarming gift.” It would be good to get rid of some of that junk. “And I’m going to the grocery. Anyone wants to come along?” Nobody wanted to come. They were all engrossed with the new neighbors, playing hopscotch — or was that Chinese jumprope? — on the small slab of concrete in front of the new house. At the store, Sara grabbed a cart and directed it inside. She needed her weekly

order, plus some food she could whip up in a minute, tuna perhaps, and farina, with cans of string beans and beets she could boil in time for a late supper. She liked being with her children, hearing about their day, sharing about her own. But today, she couldn’t. She had nothing left to give, and even just being with herself was painful, hence her emergency shopping trip smack in the middle of the day, instead of taking a deeper look into the fridge. You’re not in the grocery for an emotion-shopping trip. Let’s see. We’ll need three eggplants for tomorrow. You don’t even have money to splurge on anything extra because money is so tight. Hey, I never saw these onion rolls. The girls will love this for breakfast. Don’t splurge. I’ll need chocolate to get me through this. Her grocery cart was quickly filling, and she wasn’t even halfway through the store. In the aisle, coming at her from the opposite direction, was Miriam Schwebel. Why are you in the grocery at four in the afternoon? Sara wondered. Miriam stopped looking at the shelf long enough to bend her head in a warm greeting. “Good to see you. How are you?” In her short sheitel, prim clothing, and trendy shoes, and with her serious and dignified smile, it was clearly obvious why she was in the school Neshei while Sara’s own daughter was being kicked to the curb. “Good to see you, too.” Sara raised both eyebrows as Miriam continued on, plunking a box of manicotti into her cart. She clicked down the aisles in her square heels, her car keys still rattling in the cart as she went. And Sara found herself — between the applesauce and peanut butter — blinking away a torrent of insistent tears. She should just abandon her cart and flee to her car. But she couldn’t. Tehilla was hungry. Everyone was hungry, in fact, but not everyone was as vocal about it. And she couldn’t continue this, walking around without a head.

/ THE M O N SE Y VI E W
Resolutely, she made it through the last aisle, the baking aisle. Don’t buy impulsively, she told herself. Those creams and chocolates were all so expensive, and Sara could bake brownies just as easily as fudge bars, and the kids wouldn’t know the difference. Still, the ingredients looked down at her with pitying glances as she passed them by, still blinking and sniffling away her tears. At the register, fingering the gums, sweets, and tapes displayed for distracted people like herself, she made a decision. It was true that life was a raging fire right now. It was true that nothing would change by tomorrow. But her mother always said, “If the whole world is tired, you go to sleep.” And she would do that. She recognized that she was too exhausted to think straight. It had been a difficult day, starting very early in the morning. If she thought back, she realized that she hadn’t even had more than two hours of sleep, and way too many stressful experiences to balance on top of that. ***** “I’m sorry,” Chaim Elazar whispered to his father when he opened his eyes. “I didn’t want to cause you all this—” He looked up above the fluorescence on the wall, up to the ceiling. “All this tza’ar.” Elimelech jumped up from where he was sitting engrossed in a sefer. When he had received the phone call from the therapist Chaim Elazar was supposed to see today, Elimelech had been dismayed to have missed, and completely forgotten about the appointment. But it turned out the therapist had some good suggestions, under the circumstances. The boy could be evaluated by a hospital staff psychiatrist and social worker. Perhaps expensive therapy was not even warranted. “Teenagers hardly talk,” the therapist had said over the phone. “Right?” “Right,” Elimelech had agreed. “Only they do talk. They talk in their own language. It’s we, the adults, who don’t listen. We expect

them to be either as simplistic as children or as articulate as adults. If we listen, silently, taking in what they’re not saying aloud, but what their body language is screaming, they talk. They really talk.” Elimelech felt hopeful. Not something he ever prayed for, but the hospital room was a good place to have a father-son conversation. “I love you. Mommy loves you. We don’t have tza’ar. We have worry. We want you to be safe. We want you to be happy.” “I didn’t go out to, you know, do anything. I was learning.” Elimelech nodded. He waited. “I trust you.” “I can see now why you wouldn’t be happy with me going out at night. I couldn’t sleep. I’m sorry.” The boy was young. He was small, squashable, delicate. Elimelech simply patted the boy’s thin fingers. “What did the Mashgiach say?” Chaim Elazar asked. Elimelech was at a loss for words. The truth, only the truth, could heal whatever was plaguing his son. Dishonesty and fudging had never made someone well. What to say? “He told me I would never make it into a big makom Torah,” Chaim Elazar said, not waiting for his father’s answer. “He said it would only happen

Sara could only stare at her innocent, sweet-faced daughter. Inside of her, unnamed emotions rattled like an elevated railway train leaving the station. through unceasing hasmadah, because otherwise I’m just not made of that cloth.” The boy was obviously quoting verbatim, the words transcribed on his heart since the day he had heard them. Elimelech didn’t dare move a muscle, lest it be misconstrued. The room was silent, save for the beep of machines and his son’s great pain, which was filling up the room with inaudible screams. “Is that why you work so hard in yeshivah, harder than you ever have?” Elimelech asked. “I need to be a zach to get somewhere in life. Because I’m not a zach.” His son was living with a verdict, wrestling with a label, and trying to climb over it, panting, hustling, battling with an identity that wasn’t even his. And Elimelech would have never known. When was the last time he had spent silent time, just sitting with his son? “I’m sorry,” Elimelech said. There was anger, but mostly, a brokenness he had never felt before. For his son to be so sad, so alone, so blamed, without a soul knowing about it. And his son was smart. He couldn’t even fathom why such a mislabel had been dished out. An archaic motivational method? “You’re sorry?” his
son asked. “I’m sorry you were told you have to be a zach. You are a neshamah, and a neshamah is not a thing, it is a striving, growing tzelem Elokim.” He didn’t know yet what would happen to his son once he went back to yeshivah. It would be good for his son to be next to his father and have a conversation with the staff at yeshivah, because sometimes it’s better to go back in the ring, but with better tools, better understanding, and talk it out. Elimelech didn’t yet know if Chaim Elazar would ask to be accepted back, or would take on the consequences like a yoke. But he was calm. He felt the Bashefer close to him, in partnership with him and his wife. This ordeal could have ended way, way worse. Instead, he had gleaned what was eating his son’s heart from the inside out, in one brutal conversation. To be continued...

DIPPING: 1 white baking bar from Shufra (parve)
1 c. plus 1 oz. domino sugar 1½ T. vanilla sugar 2 eggs Dairy caramel spritz (can be replaced with any caramel cream if spritz is not available)
1 dairy 3-oz chocolate bar (I prefer Shufra or Carmit)
TOOLS: 2 foam trays, smallest size
Double boiler
Toothpicks
Baking paper
Directions: 1. Place the the two chocolate bars into double boiler and stir
Directions: 1. Mix first four ingredients in a bowl, using a spoon or fork. 2. In a lined half-roaster pan, bake at 350° for 45 minutes, mixing every 10 minutes. 3. Blend mixture until smooth. 4. constantly. (Note: Constant stirring is a must for a smooth product.) 2. When melted, take the molds out of the freezer and unpop a maximum of 8 squares at a time on a sheet of baking paper, face down. 3. Insert a toothpick into the bottom square and fully immerse into melted chocolate. Hold the squares above the melted chocolate to let the excess chocolate drip back into pot. When dripping has come to an end, insert the toothpick with the square intact on the back of a foam tray. Take out the toothpick from the other side of the tray and allow the square to rest on the back of the tray. Now continue procedure for the rest of the squares. Take the leftover melted chocolate, pour into sandwich bag. Make a small hole in one corner and drizzle chocolate over squares. 4. Good luck and enjoy your dessert!

NATIONAL POLLS In the months leading up to Donald Trump’s securing of the nomination, Hillary Clinton consistently led him in national head-to-head polls, sometimes by as much as ten points. Over recent weeks, since Trump has become the presumptive nominee, his poll numbers have been climbing steadily. In most polls, he has come within the margin of error, and in several recent polls, he has even managed to take the lead over Hillary. It is early yet, and winning the primaries will generally give a candidate a boost in poll numbers, but by all indications, this will be a very close and very contested race, with all sides willing and able to “throw the book” at each other. What is interesting to note is that when it comes

to Trump vs. Sanders, Sanders continues to have the lead with double-digit numbers. Although Hillary Clinton is still the more likely winner on the Democratic side, she is also an easier opponent for Trump, with more obvious issues for him to exploit.
CAMPAIGN FINANCING Throughout the Primary Campaign, Donald Trump has touted his refusal to accept funds from anyone to finance his campaign. Instead he has mostly self-funded, using his own money as well as money from individual small donations to run his campaign. It had been one of his biggest assets, a point he repeated over and over again. He had pointed at the other candidates, saying they were owned by lobbyist and special interest groups because of the funds they had received from them. Now with the general election looming ahead, Trump has changed his tune and has taken steps to appropriate the RNC’s (Republican National Committee) financial infrastructure to his campaign. And not only is he accepting funds to campaign in the general election, he is will also be refunding

himself for the money he had spent in the primary election. His excuse, of course, was that he had not said anything about not accepting funds in the general election — but this has been one of the more major policy changes and something of a betrayal to voters who had supported him on the basis of his being independent-minded and his own man.
LOCAL SCHOOL BOARD ELECTIONS Despite major controversy and investigations by the State of New York, the incumbent East Ramapo School Board Members running for reelection won their seats handily in the votes held on Tuesday, May 17th. The board has nine seats and three were up for reelection. Yehuda Weissmandl, Bernard Charles, and Pierre Germain retained their seats and had their budget passed. Mr. Weissmandl won with 7,548 votes to his opponent’s 4,356 votes — a 63% lead, Mr. Charles won 7,897 votes to his opponent’s 3,932 votes — a 67% lead, and Mr. Germain won 7,780 votes to his opponent’s 4,094 votes —a 65% lead. The State of New York had appointed a monitor over the board, due to complaints from people (both within and without the community) that funds were being mismanaged, and that too much of it has been diverted to private schools. Apparently, voters disagreed, coming out in large numbers in support of the existing board members and the budget they had drawn up.

The Early Intervention Program (EIP) is a public program for children under the age of three who are either suspected of having or at risk for developmental delays or disabilities. Potentially eligible children must be referred to the county program (Rockland County, 845-364-2032) to receive EIP services. EIP is funded by New York State and county governments. All EIP services are provided at no cost to parents. Health insurance may be used for approved services. A child's eligibility for the program can be determined only by state-approved evaluators under contract, and all services must be authorized by the county.

Chaya Liba Aarons “Bar Yochai nimshachta ashrecha…” The street hums. On a quick evening run to the grocery store, everything seems to tell me: Why are you here now? Why are you not yet in Meron? Soon, soon. I assure the singing world. Soon, while the little ones sleep and the thick of night has descended, I will be on my way, up, up,
90 / T HE MONS E Y V IE W
up to Meron. Under the midnight sky, the streets are day. Wending my way through a maze of buses, drivers, people, money, and tickets, I finally climb onto the bus. Women, teenagers, and girls of all stripes and types pile onto the bus. There’s an electric buzz in the air infecting and connect-
ing everyone. The seats fill up quickly and the bus revs up for our journey. I pull my thin knit cardigan around me, surprised at the chill. Why, just today I dressed my kids in shorts! But then, I am now in a different, post-midnight world. After an almost sleepless three-and-a-half hours, we seemed to have arrived. The bus comes to a halt, but I notice that we’re still on a highway. Buses fill my view from every side. The bus crawls along for another forty minutes, and finally we’re here. Here is a cacophony of stimuli assaulting me from everywhere. There are lots
of people. And lots of food. And drinks. Turns out, you can have a coffee or cholent (choose one) at four am if you so fancy. You can enjoy a three-course meal (think bourekas, soup, and farfel), courtesy of your concerned Jewish brethren. The segulah of chai rotel ensures that you don’t pass a few feet without having your thirst quenched with drinks in all colors of the rainbow (hurray! Israeli petel!). I trek up the hill along with thousands of others until we reach a human traffic jam. We have not even entered the actual me’ara yet, but I am stand-
ing in the middle of a stationary mass and I cannot move in any direction. I crane my neck to see where the music is coming from. Down to the far left, I spot circles and circles of men of every type of the Jewish spectrum — from the tattooed and ponytailed to the ultraChassidish, holding hands or arms over each others’ shoulders. “Ashreichem, ashreichem, ashreichem Yisrael!” They go round and round, round and round, along with the unending, repetitive tune. Everyone together. Jews, like one man with one heart. Here it’s not a poetic dream.

It is so real — and oh, I wish it would never have to be only a dream. It’s hard to keep rooted in your spot when what you really want to do is dance round and round yourself. When there is joy shooting from every part of you and you can’t contain it. The joy here is floating all around and I drink it up. It’s invigorating and delicious. I remember once hearing something about dance: the motion is up and down, because it is an expression of elevation. Here in Meron I witness true dance, like it was meant to be. “Mah Hakadosh Baruch Hu lakol, af Rashbi lako — Just as Hashem is for all, Rashbi is for
92 / T HE MONS E Y V IE W
all.” Only this can explain the feverish excitement of the chiloni men as they dance round and round. Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai has succeeded in touching every Jew. No one in Israel is secular in Meron on Lag B’Omer. What is his secret? I muse. A bonfire crackles from the distance. I strain to catch a glimpse of the Rebbe presiding over the four am fire. Hordes and hordes of chassidim jump up and down, up and down. My eyes graze the men filling my view. No one is impassive. Here, self-dignity and natural reservation have been shed. In this massive crowd of men there must be some who can’t shed a tear, or those who are rarely moved past a skeptical
half-smile — but everyone is now exuberant, jumping, singing, holding hands. What is the secret? I move, rather than walk, along with the crowd as it edges a bit closer to the tziyun. A pair of overworked and overwhelmed policemen shove people out of the tziyun — it’s time for a crowd switch. I gently propel myself forward, careful not to topple anyone near me. Finally, it will be my chance to enter the tziyun of Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai itself. I move, move, move — and after what must be half an hour and just a few feet, I enter the hallowed area of Rashbi’s kever. Yom Kippur. This is the first thought that enters my mind
as tears spring to my eyes. In minutes, I am crying. I sob heavily, surprised at myself. I don’t know exactly what triggered it, but I cannot stop. “Daven for my son! Pray that he comes back to us! Oy, that he shouldn’t intermarry! Shlomo ben Yosef Ezriel!” “A refuah sheleimah for Raizel bas Bracha! Heart surgery is tomorrow!” “Chaya bas Orah, zera shel kayama! It’s already fourteen years!” Loud sobs come from every direction. Sighs, whispers, screams, pleas. Oy, Tatte. Abba Shebashamayim. I try to reach into my bag for my siddur, but my arm gets stuck somewhere in the middle. I am not holding a siddur or
tissues that I desperately need. Instead, I just let the tears flow down my cheeks undisturbed. In this room that can usually accommodate perhaps a hundred fifty people, hun-
Meron, can you traverse the diametric spirits of Yom Kippur and Simchas Torah in just a few yards. “Ashreichem Yisrael…” The song is the same, the exuberance is heightened.
Only here, in Meron, can you traverse the diametric spirits of Yom Kippur and Simchas Torah in just a few yards. dreds of people are packed together, melded by their tears. There is yearning, longing, desperation, inner joy…the deepest emotions interlocked. What is the secret? The policemen are shooing us out already, and in minutes I am back into the Simchas Torah medley. Only here, in
And my joy at the fortune of being part of this nation peaks. I don’t know the secret. I don’t know how people are so transformed and uplifted in one night. But as I sing in my heart, watching the sun’s rays break into an inky sky, I feel, rather than understand, that I’ve been changed forever.

He mopped his sweating brow and let his eyes wander over the mass of people. It was hard standing under the sweltering sun, trying to keep a crushing, ever-growing crowd from toppling the police barriers. He heard Bob’s raspy voice in his head. “You’se gotta stand tall like a man an’ do ya’ job. Dohn’ let no busybody try and mow ya down.” He chuckled bitterly to himself. As if anyone would try. At six feet four, with a voice like a bullhorn, he commanded a strong, stolid presence over the milling, restless throng. It was just like Bob, with his demeaning comments — as if he was still the lanky, fresh, young officer out of training school. After six long years on the force, he could honestly say he had seen enough to fill a few volumes.

head grow heavy as great claws slowly tore away a voluminous, black velvet curtain off a dark, murky cave in his mind. He had never dared venture into that shadowy hole. But now it seemed as if the melody had sprung arms of its own and was burrowing deep into the corridors of his brain. He could feel sweat pouring down his back. A tremor ran through him. He clutched his collar. A low cry, like the sound of a wounded coyote, escaped his throat. He was going to faint…
to be good and that he would be safe here until she could come back. And he waited. Every day he waited. When he went out to the cow barn, he would cup his little hands and look far out into the field, past the blooming buttercups, straining to catch a glimpse of Mama’s green coat. After many long days, he grew tired of waiting. And then…and then… Jan’s wife became Mama. Just like that… As if in a trance, he felt a cool hand touch his arm. A chipped brown metal folding chair appeared. Someone tipped a plastic cup to his lips. He felt the clear, sweet liquid trickle down his dry throat. He moved to get up. His legs were two heavy timber logs. “Take it easy, officer. You passed out for a moment. Must have been the heat. You still look kind of green. Rest awhile.” He looked up into a pair of kind blue eyes. The man stroked his salt-and-pepper beard as he eyed him intently. He smiled weakly to himself. I’ll bet he’s wondering what a tall, young officer is doing passing out in the middle of his festival. He had to send him off quickly. “Thank you so much for your assistance and concern. You just go on and join the celebration again. I’ll be alright.” The man shrugged his shoulder and
“Shloimele, here’s your flag… Don’t let go of Tatta’s hand…. Ah freilichen Yom Tov…” He saw his mother’s ruffled white apron, her shining warm brown eyes, her soft voice echoing in his ears... He drew himself up proudly and grasped Tatta’s big hand. This year he was already three-years-old and he would get to dance with all the men. He even had a gaily decorated flag that Mama had made especially for him for hakafos. As their footsteps drew closer, he could see the little wooden shul bathed in yellow lamplight. Exuberant song burst forth from the open windows. Tatta pulled him into the circle. There was the glowing white Sefer Torah in Reb Moshke’s workworn hands. There was Reb Chaim, skipping like a young gazelle. There was Reb Yankel, He touched his head wonderingly. Home was a sparse garrett on the sixth floor of a nondescript apartment complex. He let himself in quickly, flung his bag on the kitchen table, and threw himself fully clothed into bed. Funny how he now felt so eerily free, as if he had been swimming underwater for most of his life, only to be swept up by a mighty breaker and tossed headlong onto a sunny, sandy shore. His eyes raked the room, taking in his well-thumbed books, his stamp collection, his treasured violin, a painting of an old fisherman adrift in a rickety canoe; all that meant nothing now. He needed to hold something from his past, something that could speak to him and tell him what he so desperately wanted to know. All at once, he remembered. He sprang out of bed and raced to the front alcove. He still had his suitcase, the one that had come with him all the way from Iowa. Maybe, just maybe, he could find a clue. He dragged the battered case out and let it fall with a mighty thump on the table. The front pocket unzipped easily, and he began rummaging through a pile of crumpled, yellowed newspapers. A travel brochure on the seven ancient wonders of the world, one left glove, a shoe brush, paperclips, a crumpled bus ticket, two free passes to the Bronx Zoo... He was just about to the slam the cover shut, when his hand closed over something soft and furry. He yanked it out and held it up to the light. It was dusty, it had once been pastel blue, and one ear was chewed beyond recognition. A wave of nostalgia overcame him. The stuffed bear. His longsuffering friend. It had come with him on the long journey from Poland to Iowa. Somehow, it had survived his turbulent childhood and was left to languish on a high
shelf in his room where, on impulse, he had spied it and tucked it in with his luggage to New York, as a kind of memento of his growing up years. He ran his hands over its scruffy paws. One glass brown eye peeked up at him. He turned the bear over, fingering it, letting memories of his youth wash over him, like a misty waterfall tumbling over a crag. He squinted sharply. Strange how he had never noticed it. A thin, almost imperceptible, line, hidden by a mass of crumpled fur, ran crookedly down the side of the bear. He held it up closer. The tiny, uneven stitches looked as if they had been hand-sewn in haste. He yanked open the kitchen drawer and grabbed a pair of long scissors. His fingers shook as the stitching gave way, and the bear’s innards soon lay open before him. A pile of mangled grey cotton. That was all. He sighed deeply. The last vestiges of his early years in Poland had gone to the grave with his parent’s tragic death in a car accident two years ago. He had pretty much exhausted his only lead. He held his head in his hands as his throat tightened. Little crescent-shaped tears slithered stealthily down his cheeks. In despair, he jammed the sharp scissor blade into the cotton mound. Something gave way. His fingers crept swiftly to the pile as he sifted through the dusty heap. The blade had slashed through a tiny linen bag. A small faded square note lay securely inside. He held the yellowed slip up gingerly. It was covered in crowded blue script in a foreign language, which he guessed must be Hebrew. The letters danced out at him, searing his heart; mocking his ignorance, his helplessness. He had come so close, yet he might as well have been thousands of miles away. His head shot up sharply as a faint knocking sound reached his ears. He sprang quickly into

FAST FACTS: • Archery is one of the oldest forms of weaponry, with Yishmael being explicitly mentioned in the Torah as “an archer.” In fact, one of the reasons he was sent away from Avraham’s house was because he would “play” with Yitzchok by shooting real arrows at him! According to the Midrash, however, use of the bow and arrow dates at least back to the days of Lemech, when the blind Lemech ironically returned the “favor” to Cain — the first spiller of human blood — in an accidental archery incident. • Though the bow and arrow was originally used as a hunting tool, it eventually morphed into the world’s most popular battle weapon, but quickly fell out of favor as soon as automatic machinery came into existence. Nowadays, archery is hailed as ancient form of art in many cultures, and a sport to exercise both body and mind. • During the period of time in which bows and arrows were heavily relied upon as military tools, monarchs were known to ban any leisure-time activities, requiring all of the men in the country to use their downtime to practice their archery skills instead. • Archery is one skill that takes many years to master, but also one that any type of person — with nearly any range of physical coordination and prowess — can engage in. Case in point: the holder of the World Record for Longest Shot is held by a paraplegic who aims and shoots using his feet, instead of hands. • If you want to know how hard it is to hit that bullseye from what’s considered long range, just imagine trying to hit a thumbtack held at arm’s length. It happens to be harder than you’d think…. • Before participating in an archery tournament, archers must engrave their initials on their quiverful of arrows, in order to avoid cheating, and of course, to know who to blame if the arrow flies like Lemech’s ch”v….
TYPES OF BOWS: • There are several varieties of bows, some of which include the longbow, the crossbow, and the seven-foot-tall Japanese Yumi. No, it’s not named after your little brother…. • The longbow was one of the first bows on the scene, and had the advantage of being easy to reload — though good aim was only able to be acquired through much practice. Way back when, a skilled marksman would be able to release an arrow every five to six seconds! • Crossbows came along and changed the way the world did battle: A person no longer had to have special training to shoot off arrows, because crossbows were rather userfriendly and pretty accurate. The downside? A heavy body and a much longer loading time. That downside was felt tremendously during the Battle of Crecy in which France — an army that relied heavily on crossbows — lost nearly 2,000 men to the British (whom they outnumbered nearly two to one) that relied mostly on longbows instead. As for us? We have a different “bow and arrow” that penetrates even the thickest swarm of enemies: Tefillah! So that brings us to the question of…. Longbow Crossbow

WHY BOWS AND ARROWS ON LAG B’OMER? There are several reasons why we hand our little kids bows and (blunt) arrows to play with on Lag B’Omer. • During the days of Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai, there was never a rainbow (a sign of Hashem’s displeasure with a misbehaving world) seen in the sky, due to his incredible tzidkas. Additionally, “keshet,” the Lashon Kodesh word meaning “bow,” has the same gematria of “Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai.” In memory of this, we break out the bows and arrows. • Since the Romans had outlawed Torah study, Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai and his talmidim would take bows and arrows out into the woods as a cover-up when learning. When questioned, they’d show off their weapons and reply that they were hunting. And what were they actually hunting? The treasures of the Torah! • Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai was a tzadik of unparalleled proportions, and as such, exempt from prayer. He and his talmidim devoted their days and nights to the non-stop study of Torah. We, however, are not capable of being on that tremendous madrega, and are m’chuyav in prayer. So where do bow and arrows come in? When Yitzchok Avinu blessed Esav and Yaakov, he blessed Esav with being proficient at using weapons of war, such as the bow and arrow; Yaakov Avinu, however, received the spiritual counterpart to weaponry: Tefillah, the “Kol Yaakov.” Additionally, “bekashti,” meaning “my bow” in Lashon Kodesh, is a play on words, also being able to be read, “bekashati,” — “my prayer.” So, tying it all together, when we hand our kids a bow and arrow this Lag B’Omer, we are also handing them a lesson in life: We are reminding them that our weapons in this world are that of prayer, and that no one in this generation is exempt. And don’t forget, just like archery is an art to be mastered through years of practice, but can be performed by anyone of any physical or mental prowess, so too is Tefillah. All it takes is true dedication!

Curtains add drama, ambience, and elegance to any room. The best part: window treatments need not be a complicated or expensive project, especially one in a room such as a kitchen, nursery, or bedroom. In the next few columns, we will explore several variations of easy-to create curtains. These curtains are ideal for a nursery, kids’ room, dinette, and really just about any room in your house you’d like to update with a new look!

This week we will explore how to create lined curtains. Fully lined curtains are elegant and have twice the light-blocking power of unlined curtains. Sewing curtains with a lining is great for any room that require more darkness, like a nursery or kids’ bedroom. While they may look complicated to sew, they are actually incredibly easy; just follow the instructions carefully step by step. To create lined curtains: You will need: Fabric, curtain rod or clips, scissors, iron, measuring tape or optional: seam gauge, pins, sewing machine. First measure the length and width of the look you desire for your curtains. When calculating the width for the fabric, add another 8 inches, 2” for each side of each panel. To the length add an extra 4” for the hem and 1 ½” for the top if you are planning to hang it with clips, and 3 ½” if you’re planning to hang it with a rod = total 5 ½” or 7 ½”. The lining fabric should be cut to the same size as the curtain fabric, then trimmed down to be 2” shorter and 4” narrower. Once you have the fabric ready to go, cut it in half to get two panels and proceed to the next step to start the sewing process. Find an area large enough to lay out your entire curtain. This can be your floor or a large dining table, just as long as you can lay it all out, since that will make the pinning and lining up steps much easier.
1
Fold the hem of the curtain fabric up 3/4” and press with an iron. A seam gauge will help this step a lot, as pictured.
2
Fold the hem of the curtain fabric a second time, this time making the fold 3 1/4” so the hem size between the two folds is a full 4” hem. Press with your iron.
4
Pin the hems in place in preparation for sewing. Tip: With this amount of fabric, it is more important than ever to have the excess fabric to the left of the needle. Pinning the pins into the fabric with the heads of the pins facing you will allow you to pull them out easier as you wrangle all the curtain fabric.
110
/ T HE MO NS E Y V IE W
3
Repeat steps one and two with your lining fabric, first folding and pressing 3/4” and then folding 3 1/4” and pressing a second time for the full 4”hem allowance.
5
Stitch the hem of the curtain, sewing close to the hem fold. Tip: find a spot on your presser foot to follow since the 4” hem is too large to follow on your seam allowance guide. For my example, I used the right edge of the left toe along the fold to keep my stitches straight. Remember, you will see these on the right side of the curtain. For an entirely invisible hem, this step can be hand sewn.
6
Repeat step 5 with your lining fabric, sewing close to the hem fold just as you did on the main curtain fabric.
Do-able Decors 7
Press the stitching and the bottom hem fold with your iron.

8
Repeat step 7 with your lining fabric, pressing both the stitching and the bottom fold.
9
Place the curtain fabric on a flat surface with the right side facing up. Lay the lining fabric down on top of the curtain fabric, right side down so the right sides of both materials are facing each other. Line up the top edges and one of the side edges. The opposite side will not line up since the lining is less wide. The hems also will not line up since the lining is 2” shorter than the curtain fabric.
10
Pin along the side seam that you have lined up. It can be helpful to pin a little bit along the top edge and the bottom edge to secure the lining in place.
11
Stitch the lining to the curtain fabric along the side that you pinned in step 10. Use a 1/2”-seam allowance.
13
Press both of the side seams flat after sewing to flatten the fabrics. Then turn the tube of fabric right side out, so the wrong sides of the lining and curtain fabric are facing each other.
112
/ THE MO NS E Y V IE W
12
Lay the curtain flat again, and this time, line up the fabric and lining on the side opposite the sewn side. Because the lining is narrower than the curtain, lining up the side seams will pull the seam sewn in step 11 beyond the stitch line. Pin and stitch the fabrics together at the same 1/2”-seam allowance as you did in step 11.
14
Once you turn the curtain right side out, the lining will naturally roll 1” of the curtain fabric to the wrong side of the curtain, keeping the lining away from the edge. Use your seam gauge to measure the fabric that is rolled to the back side of the curtain and press in place.
15
At the bottom corner on the lining side of the curtain, fold the raw edge of the fabric at a diagonal, tucking the raw edge in. Press the fold with your iron.

17
Hand sew the fold in place using a needle and thread. Repeat the folding, pressing, and hand stitching on the other corner of the hem.
Finish the top of the curtain based on how you choose to hang it. For a pole, fold in 1/2” and press, then fold again approximately 3”, enough to fit the rod through the fabric (a standard rod is 2”), and you want the rod to have some room to pull in and out easily, and have some room for the stitching) and stitch in place. For ring clips, fold and press the top layers twice ¾ “inch each time and stitch. Then simply clip and hang!

Artwork and photographs make a house into a home, but some people find the task of hanging pictures somewhat daunting. Follow these easy steps, and you’ll soon find yourself a picture professional. Placement: Before hanging a picture, think about the best location for it. Does the size of the frame suit the wall space available? Will the picture stand alone or be part of a gallery? How will available lighting affect the picture/s? Will there be glare? Will sunlight fade it? What other furnishings will be adjacent to it, e.g. couches, windows/shades, hanging plants? The recommended height for hanging pictures is about 58 inches from the floor. This is eye-level for most adults. If you are hanging a single picture, the center of the picture should at this height. The picture should be placed equidistant from the side walls or centered over a table or couch. If you are hanging a picture above a sofa, leave at least 6-10 inches between the top of the sofa and the bottom of the picture frame. Tools: • Pencil • Measuring tape • Picture hooks, screws, or 1 ½-inch (4d) or 2-inch (6d) nails
• Self-tapping, threaded anchors • Hammer or screwdriver • Drill or awl
If the picture weighs less than twenty pounds, you may use nails, screws or picture hooks to hang it. It is not necessary to locate the studs behind the walls to secure the nails or screws. Picture hooks come in a variety of sizes depending on the weight of the picture.

STEP 2. Measure the height of the picture including the frame (e.g. 20 inches). Starting at the mark on the wall that you made in Step 1, make another mark directly above it that is half the height of the picture (10 inches). STEP 3. Turn the picture over on a table. Mea-

Mark the wall this distance directly below the mark in Step 2. This is where you will put in the nail or screw. Be careful not to choose a place that is in the way of electrical wires or plumbing that are inside the wall. Metal nails or screws can be hazardous in such locations.
STEP 4. Using nails or picture hooks: Drive the nail into the wall at a 45-degree angle. The nail slot in picture hooks are already positioned at a 45-degree angle. When using these hooks, position the hook, not the nail, over the wall mark. Before inserting a screw, drill a hole in the center of the mark on the wall. You may use an awl and hammer instead of a drill. The hole should be slightly smaller than the width of the anchor. Hammer in the anchor. Then drive in the screw. For heavier pictures, you may want to use two nails or two screws to support the hanging wire. These are placed equidistant from the center of the wire. Spiral anchors provide more support than regular anchors on drywall. First screw the spiral anchor into the wall and then drive the screw into the anchor. If you are able to use a stud behind the wall to support the nails or screws, then anchors won’t be necessary. Since most drywall is 3/8-½inch thick, the wood screws or wood nails should be 1½-2 inches long. STEP 5. Hang your picture! You can check if the picture is straight using a level.
Multiple pictures: You may want to make paper templates of the pictures, and try a variety of layouts before measuring the wall. Use masking tape or painter’s tape to hold the paper in place. If you are creating a collection, the center of the entire collection is considered “the center.” This point should be 58 inches above the floor, with pictures extending above and below this point. Once you have decided where you would like each picture to be, draw a line at the center of the top of each paper. Then, continue with Steps 3 to 5 for each picture. Stand back and enjoy the view!
DRILLING INTO TILE: When hanging objects on tile, the drill holes may not always line up with the soft grout between the tiles. Care must be taken when drilling holes in ceramic or porcelain tiles to avoid cracking or breaking them. Instead of a regular bit, use
a carbide tipped masonry drill bit to make holes in the tile. To keep the tip from slipping when beginning to drill, provide some traction by making an X with masking tape over the spot where the hole will be. Drill slowly at low speed into the tile. Gradually increase the speed, using con-
x
stant, firm pressure. This is a job where patience pays off. Keep the drill bit cool by dipping the tip into water from time to time. When you reach the wall board behind the tile, switch to a regular drill bit. Insert a plastic anchor, and drive in the screw.

Good Credit Even Greater Possibilities
Our new column Good Credit, Even Greater Possibilities has been successful since its inception. The eye-opening information and day-to-day relevancy for the average family man, driver, entrepreneur, and beyond, has provided a forum where people can educate themselves about anything credit related. Goldmine has been inundated with great questions about credit, credit cards, etc. This week, we’d like to share some of the answers we’ve provided do those who’ve contact us, to benefit other readers. Credit Reports and Credit Scores: I have read your column with interest and would like to understand why you advise to check credit reports. Your credit report may contain errors. Note that these errors will show on your report. If there are incorrect late payments etc. it is important for you to dispute them with the credit bureau. I want to check my credit report, but do not know whom to contact. You can access it by visiting annualcreditreport.com or by calling 877-FACT-ACT (3238228). Once every month you can receive it for free.
What if I have requested a report in the past year and would like to view an additional report? If this is your second or third request for a report in the past twelve months, you can receive a copy for a fee. There are also many sites which offer your credit reports for free and you may choose to access them. And for those of you that have inquired if checking your credit report adversely affects your credit, the answer is no. The only time it blemishes your credit is if you check it through a lender (mortgage, car, or student loan).
If I was denied credit and would like to do a double check, do I have to pay a fee to view my report then? No. The law requires that the credit bureau on which the decision to deny you credit was based on, has to send you a free copy within the next sixty days. What does a low 650 credit score indicate? This can mean that you are greatly maxed out or that there is a different negative factor on your report, perhaps a late payment. For best results, print out your report, see what the problem is, and work on improving your credit.
Building Credit I am interested in building my credit. How long will the process take me? Building credit is a smart way of ensuring financial stability. The process is as follows: Open a secured card or take out a small loan and pay on time. This will be reported to your credit report, and after a minimum of six
118
/ THE MONS E Y V IE W
months of credit history on your credit report you will be able to apply for credit. Is there a shortcut for credit accessibility? Yes, being an additional or Authorized User can immediately attach you to the primary cardholder. This means that
you will show up with the primary cardholder’s past credit payments on your credit report. Capital One, Citibank, Discover, BOA, and Barclays link you to his account immediately; after just one month they will report his previous six statements to the credit bureau as part of your history.
Will a Student Loan build my credit? Definitely. Any kind of loan will build your credit. I understand the implications of late payment, but have regretfully been lax and have missed a payment. What can I do about it now? Pay now. Pay now! A delinquent payment can considerably affect your credit. (Be assured that if a payment is issued before thirty days it will not harm your credit.) So, if I pay my balance, will that immediately repair my credit? If it is after thirty days, no. Pay heed that although a collection account will stay on your report for seven years, your final score is primarily based on the past six months. In other words, after six months your report will look better. I am a new card owner and want to protect and build my credit. I am afraid of messing up. What would you advise my utilization rate to be? The recommended usage is anywhere between 10% to 30%. If you use over 50%, it will vastly affect your credit and you will be unable to apply for additional
credit. If you enter dangerous territory, a high utilization rate of over 50%, you should pay it off and wait one billing cycle. When you view your statement in black and white, you can be sure that this information was updated at the credit bureau, and can then apply for TRUSTED TRAVEL credit. CREDIT REWARDS &
score is. So yes, in the short term, opening a new card will slightly lower your credit score, but in the long term it will only benefit and improve your credit score. (Canceling and opening cards is a lengthy topic to which we will return in a future column.) The interest generated from this column and the influx of questions have been immense. Does opening and closing cards affect your credit? Opening or closing a card suggests a hard pull. This affects your score, but only m i n i m a l l y. Also, the negative effects of a hard pull lessen after a few months, and banks only take the past three to six months of a hard pull into consideration. After two years, this information will completely fall off your credit radar. Also a new card provides new opportunity, and a new line of credit. The more credit you have, the better your

THE MEDICINES IN YOUR CABINET: Ordinary Cooking Spices, Extraordinary Uses
3
Zingy and piquant. Aromatic and pungent. Spices are what turn mere ingredients into delicacies; it’s the color streaked upon the canvas of life. It is no culinary secret that any dish is assessed by the way it is seasoned. The mystery just lies within the association between spices and medicine. Our vast knowledge of the spices’ medical properties is credited to ancient tradition. People of previous generations used spices such as nutmeg, ginger, turmeric, saffron, cinnamon, cardamom, vanilla bean, mustard seed, cumin, oregano, anise, coriander seed, cloves, garlic, allspice, bay leaves, and many more to heal and prevent illnesses. Originally, spices were not just to flavor a favorite dish. It was what people kept in their medicine chest to successfully heal many ailments and pains. Let us familiarize ourselves with some of those powerful spices. Prepare to be astounded.
Garlic: (Allium sativum) Hailing from Egypt, this is the #1 spice. The main component in crushed garlic is allicin, the compound responsible for your garlic breath. There’s a great part to it, too, though — allicin possesses natural antimicrobial properties which go a long way in battling any pathogenic bacteria your body has a hard time rejecting. The acclaimed Greek philosopher, Pythagoras, dubbed this European bulbous herb “the king of all spices.” And not for naught. Garlic played an integral part in battling the Black Death and the many cholera pandem-

ics which claimed thousands of lives. At that time, it was not uncommon for mothers to surround their newborn’s cradle with vines stringed with garlic, to protect their babes from contagion. It’s not just an old wives’ tale. Garlic has proven itself multiple times by helping to cure the flu, pneumonia, tuberculosis, and strep. It has also revealed astonishing results against atherosclerosis and cholesterol, the results obtained by cutting two cloves of garlic into small pieces and taking them as a pill (without chewing) with a glass of hot water. To remove bad odor, chew one lemon slice with the rind. Studies reveal that by ingesting the aforementioned daily, one is nearly guaranteed never to suffer from a stroke or heart attack. To effectively kill pinworms in children, crush one garlic into 1/3 glass boiling milk. When cool, sieve and make an enema. Garlic is a great source of vitamin C. And in ancient Chinese medicine, crushed garlic healed scars completely. For the full bio-complex always stick to fresh garlic. The pill form can never substitute, as it loses most of its live enzymes and other active ingredients. It should be noted however, that people with kidney problems, stomach ulcers, and epilepsy should be cautious with the amount of garlic they ingest. It may prove detrimental to their health. It’s truly remarkable how some little cloves can yield such big results…
Cardamom: (Elettaria cardamomum) Cardamom is the aromatic fruit of an Indian herb from the ginger family. Its seeds are used as a spice and in medicine. In Arabic countries, Turkish coffee is as popular as the keffiyeh and drums. This coffee is enjoyed for its aroma and rich taste. Yet what’s important is the 40% cardamom the coffee contains, which eliminates the caffeine’s unhealthy side effects. Cardamom is also known to bolster the appetite by stimulating the production of digestive juices which are necessary for digestion and absorption. Add this spice to a hot tea to stop vomiting and

end/prevent nausea. M a n y studies have also proven the effectiveness of cardamom in stopping heart palpitations.
Cloves: (Syzygium aromaticum) Found in your besamim container, this pungent, fragrant dried bud is derived from a type of tropical evergreen tree. Cloves are enjoyed in Europe in a popular drink called glintveyn/gluhwein which is mulled wine with the main ingredient of cloves, which studies have revealed to be very effective for chronic fatigue syndrome and memory loss. The medicinal properties in cloves makes it a very effectual “drug” for people in their golden age. It helps prevent atherosclerosis, strokes, elderly dementia, Alzheimer’s, and depression. In Arabian countries, cloves were used as a strong detoxifier. It was also credited to stimulate brain function in many neurological reports.
Nutmeg: (Myristica fragrans) This ancient spice was held in high regard by many, including the Rambam, who included it in his herbal formulas. The renowned 8th-century healer, Avicenna (Latinate form of Ibn Sina), authored “The Book of Healing,” a philosophical and scientific encyclopedia, and “The Canon of Medicine,” a medical encyclopedia which became a standard medical edition at many medieval schools of medicine, remaining in use as late as 1650. In 1973, Avicenna’s “Canon of Medicine” was reprinted in New York, which included information on nutmeg’s many incredible properties which are good for eyesight and stomach/liver function. This aromatic seed stops diarrhea, acts as a water pill, and strengthens the heart. It’s also a great spice against alcohol intoxication, thus long distance chauffeurs in Europe who chased fatigue away with shots of spirit, constantly kept a caddie of nutmeg handy.
Cinnamon: (C. zeylanicum) Originally derived from Sri Lanka, this spice is prepared from the dried inner bark of an Asian tree called Cinnamomum.

Cinnamon is not only good in your apple compote. It aides in digestion and helps those who have a hard time digesting dairy products. Medical studies have shown that it regulates and drops elevated blood glucose levels by stimulating insulin production. Cinnamon also helps for the liver, kidney, and gallbladder.

MOVE TO MUSIC Are you looking forward to Lag B’Omer? The fires, the dancing, the singing, and of course the music…
of others, such as animals, people, or nature. At this stage, they can actually do finger plays, not just watch.
WHY IS MUSIC SO VITAL TO CHILDREN (AND CHILDREN AT HEART)?
WHAT OTHER MILESTONES CAN CHILDREN REACH THROUGH MUSIC?
Children are programmed to move. Music helps them develop in many areas; it is a developmental milestone in itself. Look at the many musical baby toys and swings available. Infants are soothed by rhythm and learn about rhythm from birth. Watch a baby turn his head to the music. A more mature infant may coo, rock, sway, or even clap his hands to the beat. As children grow older, it is time to encourage them to create their own music. Let them play with bells or experiment with rattles. Vary the music that they listen to, so they are exposed to both slow and fast sounds. Youngsters become more music savvy with age. At two years old, my daughter started to sing simple songs. Repeating songs creates familiarity. A wide variety of sound and musical toys will encourage them to experiment with sound. From drums and bells to pots and spoons, these tools inspire children to learn about the world of music. Toddlers will also dance upon request. Having a hectic afternoon? Put on music and dance away the stress. Three- to five-year-olds can use their bodies to express themselves. They can also imitate the movements
Social/Emotional: Your child’s smile as s/he sings and claps shows how much self-confidence s/he’s gaining from music. Singing, dancing, and creating music together encourage positive interactions and cooperation. Music is a wonderful outlet of self-expression. Try this: • Use songs to calm children down at bedtime or any hectic time throughout the day. Help children anticipate what’s coming next. • Encourage children to play together using songs such as Ring Around the Rosy. • Practice self-control by playing a Freeze game. Tell your child to freeze when the music stops, and remain motionless until the music starts again. • Use your singing voice as a way to express love. Your children don’t care if you are a great singer. They only care that you are singing to THEM! In their eyes (and ears), you’ll be a star! Physical: In today’s sedentary society, infants are becoming “container babies.” They are shuffled around from one thing to the next, from the car seat to the swing

to the high chair. Children should be given the freedom to move. While moving to music, both gross and fine motor skills are developed. By encouraging enjoyable movement, you enable your child to learn to control his body’s movements and perform increasingly complex actions. Hand and foot coordination is another important skill developed through dance. Using small muscles in finger plays helps your toddler build up the small muscles needed for handwriting. Additionally, music and movement improve balance and rhythm. Try this: • Provide babies with toys to kick and throw. Hold them on your lap and bounce gently to the music. • Use these songs and make up movement to go along with it. • The Farmer in the Dell • Pop goes the Weasel! • Little Sally Saucer • Choo-Choo Train • Bluebird, Through My Window • London Bridges • Use these simple fingerplays to encourage children’s fine mo-
tor development. • The Wheels of the Bus • Where Is Thumbkin • Open, Shut Them Language and literacy: Songs help children learn how to put words and phrases together. Use songs to expose your child to new words. By matching actions to words, your child understands what the word really means. Hearing a variety of songs will refine your toddler’s listening skills, as she notices changes in the tone or beat. Rhymes are a very important part of early literacy learning, as children learn to match the sounds of language. Try this: • Pause in the middle of a song and let your child fill in the words. • Create little rhymes to sing with your child. • Sing the alphabet song with older toddlers to start exposing them to letters. Math: Music engages the brain while stimulating neural pathways associated with math. Children have an innate capability to not only see patterns but also hear them in mu-
Put on music and dance away the stress. sic. Reinforcing these capabilities by teaching patterns through music at an early age will benefit your child’s cognitive abilities. Dancing in time to music facilitates understanding of numerical concepts. Using songs with numbers can help children learn numerical concepts easily. Try this: • Sing these finger plays: • Five Little Monkeys • Ten Little Fingers • Count and clap to the beat. While writing this article, I sang “Five Little Monkeys” with my children. It was amazing to see how they all lit up and responded to the finger play. Music transcends age gaps and helps everyone feel safe and loved.

8 Ways to “Accidentally” Unapprove Your Mortgage
by Ann Zeilingold Even if your credit is okay, your income is enough to qualify, and you have put a down payment down that works for the mortgage program, you can still be denied a mortgage. Sometimes the reason for denial is something that was avoidable, and good advice, and structure could have mitigated the issue. Sometimes there is something else that comes up, something unexpected that can trigger a denial for a mortgage loan. Here are eight ways to get your mortgage denied… accidently! 1. The rate you were hoping for is no longer available when you are ready to lock in your loan. For instance, let’s say that you were pre-approved at the lowest rates available, but when you find a home the market has already moved and the rates are no longer what they were when you first began your search — you can lose out. Another scenario is that you applied for your loan, but since you weren’t closing for a long time, you did not lock in your rate — and now the file may not work. And lastly, you and your mortgage professional decided not to lock in, gambling that rates will go down, and that didn’t happen. 2. You apply for the loan and your lender based the approval on the credit report in the file. Unbeknownst to you, a credit refresh (which is a new credit report without scores), is pulled within ten days of closing. You were so excited about the new house that you went shopping and you charged up your credit cards, and now you don’t qualify for the mortgage — or maybe you upgraded your car, because your lease needed to be turned in and now the payment is higher. Another problem that can come up with the credit refresh is a new late payment. If the late pay-

Using an experienced mortgage loan originator is the key to a successful mortgage closing.
ment is on a mortgage the loan can be denied, or if there are multiple lates, an underwriter may use this as a reason to reverse an approved loan. 3. Everything is going well. You are so excited about the house… Your contract says that you need to put 20% down, but your grandmother ended up giving you less of a gift than you thought she was going to give you. You apply for a 10% down loan. No big deal, you feel. The problem is that your ratios are too high and you cannot get PMI (private mortgage insurance). You realize that the house is just too expensive anyway since your grandmother is not helping you. You provide the denial to your attorney who gives it to the seller’s attorney. Since you never applied for the 20% down loan as stipulated in your contract, the seller keeps your down payment. Ouch! 4. You make $120,000 a year. You provided your last paystub to the mortgage lender. Everything
is checking out. You explain that you recently got a raise. You provided a letter from the company that you were not an owner of the company. What you didn’t tell them is that you work for your uncle. And that your income went from $40,000 a year to $120,000 a year just last month. Since you work for family and your income level is not similar to what you have earned in the past, as per mortgage guidelines, your loan can be denied. 5. You are in contract to purchase an investment property. You are putting 25% down. What you omitted was that the down payment was a gift. On investment property mortgage, no gift is allowed. Since you received the money two days before the down payment check cleared your account, the loan will be denied. The same is true for any file where the down payment comes from an unverifiable source, like cash— green cash, gemach funds, loans etc… 6. Your employer checks a box on a written verification of employment stating overtime/
bonus is not likely to continue. $25,000 of your income is overtime. The loan may not qualify. 7. You are working for a yeshivah and they pay your kids’ tuition and deduct insurance from your salary. You don’t qualify based on this lower salary. 8. You move into the property before the closing. The loan type is FHA, 3.5% down payment. The lender finds out. If this happens, you either have to wait four months to close or put 15% down. I can list another fifteen such scenarios. Every scenario listed above can be avoided. That is why using an experienced mortgage loan originator is the key to a successful mortgage closing. If you or anyone you know is experiencing any of the situations listed above, reach out to my office to help you restructure your loan application.
