Our anniversary issue marks a big moment for us at The Monsey View and a big moment for the community at large. Week after week, we gave you our all as we informed, entertained, and inspired. And week after week, the feedback we received surpassed our grandest expectations. The enthusiasm of our fans and the anticipation of our readers explain why the stack of 15,000 copies that we print weekly is down to zero even before the next issue takes its place on the shelves. It also explains the impact that our advertisers feel. They know that an ad placed in The Monsey View is an ad that will be seen by the entire community, not once, but time and again. Such is the nature of our publication. We are honored to end up on your kitchen table, tucked between your couch cushions, and packed in your bag when you go away for Shabbos. And, most of all, we are honored to have become a community forum, a medium to exchange ideas, discuss matters of import, and examine pressing issues. Many important topics have been raised, debated, and finally resolved. But the one subject that surfaced in our pages multiple times is the garbage issue. In honor of our first Anniversary, The Monsey View is launching a program to give everyone the continuous gift of a beautiful, clean community. We know that as our community and our families are Baruch Hashem growing, it is often a challenge to stay on top of the mess. And yet, it is so important to preserve the beauty that makes Monsey so special. In an effort to inspire our readers to do their part, we present a two-part cleanup contest, with fantastic prizes to get everyone excited! Like everything else, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. We’re pretty sure that once our program brings the awareness and gets everyone into the habit of cleaning up as they go, tossing litter in the trash, putting bikes and toys away, and disposing of garbage and boxes properly, the landscape in our town will change. Children will pick up on these habits which will last them a lifetime, and preserve the charm of our town. Come on everybody. Join The Monsey View in our campaign to keep the views of Monsey looking gorgeous. If we all pitch in, the results will be simply spectacular! As we enter our second year of servicing the Monsey community, we have many more surprises in store, as we stay in beat with each season and stage, and as we commit to remain the voice of the Greater Monsey community.

RE: DESERT BOTANICAL GARDEN
The Desert Botanical Garden of Phoenix, Arizona mentioned in issue #52 (FYI) is truly a beautiful place to visit. My husband and I made that our first stop on our vacation to Arizona nearly a year ago. It is especially interesting for us New Yorkers who are unused to seeing any type of desert plant (unless we receive it as part of our Shavuos planter), but I must point out that at the time of our visit the temperature was 112°F! Unless you try to catch your breath in the air-conditioned gift shop, the sun is blazing and there is no shade. For those who would try to tell you that Arizona’s heat is dry, let me assure you that we felt every degree of that 112° and simply couldn’t stand the heat long enough to enjoy our entire stay. As a matter of fact, their “Tips for Visiting” calls for “being prepared for the heat” with warnings to stay hydrated, protect your skin, pace yourself, and ask a garden staff member if you need help. Also, 140 acres cannot possibly be covered by foot in one outing (87 city blocks!), and although electric scooters are available, according to the brochure (for an additional fee), we were not offered any. Naturally, a visit in the winter no

Dear A & R Zimberg, Thank you for your recent series in The Monsey View, Every Man a Handyman. We purchased our home about five years ago, and at the time, we didn’t realize what it would take to keep it well-maintained and attractive! We are not too handy, and small matters, like installing hooks in the coat closet or filling in chipped paint, are daunting tasks. (A set of four picture frames were stacked on a shelf gathering dust for months, until a kind neighbor volunteered to mount them on the wall for us.) I watch helplessly as hinges begin to squeak, grout begins to flake away, and our home begins to show inevitable signs of wear and tear. I appreciate your well-written articles because they do not presume any

CHARMING VISIT TO ABMA’S FARM
I read so much about Abma’s farm in the back and forth in your inbox that I had to check it out myself, now that the weather has turned pleasant. I took my family there last Friday, and we had a beautiful experience. There were several Yiddish families, and the atmosphere was so nice. When I saw the chocolate squares featured in Issue 51, I knew that this is what I wanted to make for Shavuos. I visited several stores, but didn’t see the silicone molds in the square shape. One day last week, there was a special gleam in my daughter’s eye as she jumped off the bus, and I knew she had something exciting to tell me. She pulled a note out of her briefcase, and her excitement mounted as I read the details of her performance, enthusing how thrilled and proud I was to attend. His older two-year-old sister I will place at a friend or sister for the event; I understand that, but what’s wrong with bringing a newborn along? I respect that the teacher has worked hard for the performance and doesn’t want it to get interrupted by an unhappy baby’s cry. I also understand that there may be a lack of room in the classroom, but do they know how proud their older siblings are to show off their baby? Do they know what it means for me to arrange a sitter — how it complicates things? This new trend is greatly bothering me. I get this feeling all over, when shopping at certain stores, from the annoyed look I get on the bus or in the grocery when one of my children is too vocal, and at simchos where anyone under the age of five is frowned upon. In my work as an Early Intervention speech therapist, I had one case where the girl was doing beautifully, and I told the mother that I was going to have to discharge her because she had accomplished all the goals. She pleaded with me to keep the child on my caseload. I explained that if she had any concerns, then I could address them and work with the daughter, but that I didn’t see her delayed in any speech or language areas anymore. The mother tried again, stating that her daughter had been approved for EI until the age of three. I agreed with her, but explained once again that it was only if there were delays to be worked on. I told her the State has rules and I have to follow them. If I continued when her daughter didn’t need the therapy, it would be stealing and I would have to answer for it later in Shamayim. The mother was very impressed. She asked me if I had another case to take on and I replied “no.” I knew that sooner or later something would come up for me. Then, as I was leaving the house, my phone rang and I received a call from the head of the agency I worked for: she had another case for me!

WeighSmarter when you feel out of control around food. And it really is scary! I mean, how many people try to avoid going to simchas because of all the food? How many people avoid keeping certain foods in the house because they’re afraid of scarfing it all down in one sitting? I don’t blame anyone for feeling this way, and I feel bad that the smallest piece of chocolate can exert such a strong influence over a 168-pound woman! If you think about it, it’s true. But what are you supposed to do about it? Should you focus on willpower? Motivation? Should you tell yourself a million times that you don’t like what you see in the mirror? Should you worry and stress yourself out about your health?

Keeping the Temptation in Check Shavous is right around the corner, complete with all the mouthwatering peanut butter cheesecakes, red velvet cupcakes, cookies, and more. Just walking through those aisles of milchige stuff leaves us salivating. It’s Yom Tov, and that means all of these milchigs leads many of us straight into panic mode. “How can I go through Shavous and avoid gaining five pounds?” people have asked me. And it’s not only on Yom Tov, because some people have told me that it all began when they started baking. Then they are anxious that they will indulge in all of those goodies on Shavuos, and they will nibble on the leftovers as well. So, I definitely hear your concern, since I used to be a fan of all those scrumptious goods. I remember years ago on Shavous, after the milchig suedah, I literally felt drunk and needed to drag myself to bed! There’s good reason that Yehudis gave Elifornus a dairy meal – all that sugar combined with the lactose makes for a great sleeping pill. It’s a pretty expensive drug, though. Some people have told me, “I wish I could be allergic to milchig!” That’s how nervous they are before Shavous, and for good reason, mainly because it’s scary

TIP 1. Realize that your eating habits come from negative emotions and experiences you’ve had, or maybe you feel like you are in a difficult situation right now. It’s perfectly okay to be honest with yourself. I know many people shy away from the phrase “emotional eating.” It makes them feel very vulnerable, uncomfortable, and so out of control, that they would much rather say, “I just love food!” than acknowledge the reasons behind their eating habits. The first and most important step for sticking with your food plan, dropping weight, increasing your energy levels, and improving your overall health is to be to totally okay with the fact that you’re an emotional eater

– that is, if you eat when you’re not hungry – and that being an emotional eater is just fine. You don’t have to love the fact that you’re an emotional eater, but admitting the truth to yourself is an important part of making peace with the truth and moving on. By trying to rationalize your overeating by claiming you just love food, you go in conflict with your inner truth. There is no lying to oneself! TIP 2. Although my theory is not to deprive yourself, some of you are still developing your skills when it comes to tasting your food, enjoying it, and moving on with life. So, until you build inner strength with the Emotional Freedom Technique and other strategies, it might be easier for you to steer totally clear of sugary foods. When you say that you can’t stop once you’ve started eating sweets, it’s really that you don’t know how to stop because your emotions are driving you to overeat. I do
agree that eating sweets on an empty stomach is a bad idea, especially since your blood sugar will spike and fall very quickly, which will make you crave even more food. Many people, myself included, have taken the challenge to see if eating sweets on an empty stomach really affects us, and the answer is clear. I wouldn’t recommend it – it’s definitely a challenge – but the fact that each of us managed to stop is truly fascinating. Don’t forget, I am talking about the people who claim that they can’t stop eating once they’ve started. So, it is pretty amazing to see how inspiring a person’s inner strength can be. TIP 3. If you like your kitchen, there are many things you can make with monk fruit sugar or Xylitol that will help you reduce your sugar and carb consumption by a great deal! Any cheesy dish without crust or dough can be made without refined sugar. And if you’re a takeout type,
there are plenty of sugar-free goodies available as well. It usually won’t have your choice of sugar replacement, since most commercial products contain artificial sweeteners, but for one Shavous – and for your sanity – I think it’s okay. TIP 4. If you do overeat, please remember that you are human, and make sure to be kind to yourself. Think about what you would tell your best friend if your roles were reversed. Every moment presents the opportunity for a fresh start. Remember that there is always hope. Make sure to tune in for next week’s article on leptin resistance and how it affects your weight.

The king announced that he wished a vast forest to be cut down, and he decreed that all able-bodied men should assist in the job. Some men brought axes, while others brought saws. Two lucky workers had the ultimate tool: an electric chainsaw. They were the envy of all. One of the lucky workers with a chainsaw spent half his day boasting of his prized possession, and showing it off. Most of the other workers spent half their day admiring the chainsaw, and thinking of ways to acquire one for themselves. Only two workers refused to be distracted, but instead put all their efforts into fulfilling the king’s wishes: the second lucky owner of a chainsaw, and one man with a simple axe. Both spent the entire day chopping down as many trees as their tool would allow. The king, seeing devotion of these two workers, elevated both of them to positions of honor, and bestowed upon both great rewards. It says in this week’s Parsha, “V’itchem yih’yu ish ish lamateh, ish rosh l’veis avosav hu. – With you there shall be one man for each tribe, each who is a head of his father’s house.” R’ Moshe Chafetz, ztz”l, explains the statement “each who was the head of his father’s house” to mean that each man was the beginning of a noble lineage, rather than the descendant of such a lineage. He

gave a moshul to explain this, as follows. Two men were arguing, and one man accused the other of having poor yichus. The other man replied, “Your yichus may be good, but your yichus ends with you, while my yichus begins with me.” Yichus is something that is highly sought after, and for good reason. The z’chus avos of a yachsan, the purity of body of the yachsan, and the spiritual DNA of the yachsan, are all tools that can help propel the yachsan
No matter who we are or whom we marry, we are all capable of raising holy children and living holy lives. to greatness in avodas Hashem. When marrying off children, parents look for families with yichus because that yichus will then become the yichus of their grandchildren. However, it is far too easy to forget why it is that yichus is desirable. We want our children to have holy yichus because we want our children to be holy. Yichus is a powerful tool in avodas Hashem – but the goal is avodas Hashem, not impressive social status. No matter who we are or whom we marry, we
are all capable of raising holy children and living holy lives. Whether one has been blessed with an electric chainsaw or a simple axe, we must put all of our efforts into using every resource we have to serve Hashem wholeheartedly, and raise our children to do likewise. We can begin by realizing that every tool that Hashem gave us was chosen by Hashem for us – we have everything we need to do the job right. I was once looking to fill in more of my family tree, and my search led me to the Dinover Rebbe, ztz”l, here in Monsey. When I sat down with him, I saw the image that yichus is meant to help one attain. This tzadik was living in another world – a world above this one. He had transcended ordinary life and ordinary issues. The Rebbe could not understand why any person would “waste” precious time and energy in looking to fill out a family tree – time and energy that could be spent in avodas Hashem. I will never forget his words: “Rather than devote your time to finding out from where you come, you should put that energy into where you are going. Put your effort instead into raising righteous children and righteous doros.” Yichus is a powerful tool, but it is not the only tool, and it is not even a necessary tool. Any per-
son can achieve the same goal, but it might take more work. As we approach Shavuos, a perfect example is brought to mind: Rus. Rus had the opposite of good yichus – she was a Moabite – and yet her success in avodas Hashem was so powerful that all the kings of Klal

What are the halachos pertaining to cut flowers? May I move them? May the vase be refilled with water if it spills? Is there anything else I need to know about them?

On Shavuos, it’s a minhag to spread branches, flowers, and grass in our homes and shuls as a zecher of the Torah that was given on Har Sinai, (Shulchan Aruch) which was surrounded by flowers and grass in a breathtaking display with a heady fragrance. It is also a minhag to place trees in shuls as a zecher that Shavuos is Rosh Hashana for the trees. (Magen Avrahom) One should be mispalel that the trees should bear good fruits this year. A muktzah machmas gufo (something that has no known use, e.g. a pebble) that one was “m’yached” before Shabbos to be m’taltel (to move on Shabbos), is no longer considered muktzah. One is m’yached a muktzah machmas gufo by lifting up the object before Shabbos and having in mind (preferably verbalizing it) that one will be m’taltel it on Shabbos. • Therefore, a branch of a tree (which al pi halacha is muktzah machmas gufo and is assur to touch on Shabbos), becomes permitted to be moved once one is m’yached it before Shabbos. • Some poskim say that even regular flowers are muktzah machmas gufo. Therefore one may not touch flowers on Shabbos unless one is m’yached them before Shabbos. • One may not lift up or lower down a live plant in a pot of soil, even if the pot doesn’t have a hole on the bottom. This applies even if one is m’yached it before Shabbos, because it is considered zoreya, (seeding) or tolesh (uprooting); i.e bringing or removing it closer to or further from its source of sustenance. One may, however, use one’s foot to move the plant from place to place on the same level. If it is known that daylight would expedite the growth of a particular plant, one may not move or kick it with one’s foot closer to the window. • It is muttar to remove a fruit from a branch that has
descended from him, than to say how fortunate he is to have descended from a certain ancestor. In other words, it is better to be the person of great spiritual stature than to have descended from such a man. Best of all is to have both, of course – to be a tzadik ben tzadik.

(However, one should refrain from taking two or more fruits at a time in order to be choshesh to the opinion of some poskim that this would violate the issur of ( )מפרקmefarek.) • It is a minhag to smell flowers on Shavuos, because at Har Sinai there were beautiful, fragrant flowers. It is muttar to smell fresh flowers or trees that are still in the ground on Shabbos, as long as one does not touch them. • It is assur to put flowers in a vase of water on Shabbos. It is also assur to change or add water to the vase or flower arrangement on Shabbos, even if one was m’yached the flowers before Shabbos. • If one kept the flowers in the fridge, one may not remove them from the fridge on Shabbos to arrange them for yom tov (as in the case of this year’s calendar) in order not to violate the issur of preparing for yom tov on Shabbos. • If the water spilled out of the vase, it may not be replaced on Shabbos. If the flowers spilled out or were removed from the vase but the water remains in the vase, one may replace the flowers back into the old water. • Besha’as hadchak, for example at a simcha, when there are large quantities of expensive flowers, one may leave them in the fridge until one needs them and then put them into vases or vessels that were filled with water before Shabbos. This is only muttar if one was m’yached the flowers before Shabbos so they are not muktzah . • However, there are certain types of flowers that open up very fast. It is not permitted to put these flowers in a vase of prepared water. If they were already in the water on Shabbos and they spilled out of the vase, one may not replace them into the old water.

The Eternal Heart of Yisroel I have found Dovid, My servant (Tehillim 89). He seemed suitable in every way. A son of Yishai, tall and good looking. Capable of commanding respect. And yet Shmuel, on this occasion, had erred. Eliav was not the one Hashem chose as king. “For man sees what the eye beholds, but Hashem sees the heart.” (Shmuel I, 16, 7) Eliav was prone to anger. (Rashi ibid, Pesachim 66b) Although Hashem had told Shmuel to anoint a son of Yishai, when seven sons were gathered, Hashem did not guide him to anoint any of them. The eighth son had not been called. Out shepherding the flocks, was Dovid. No great hopes for him. His brothers viewed him as deficient. He was an Admoni, inclined by nature towards spilling blood. Shmuel took one look and saw the issue. Hashem told him other-

wise. Dovid was in control of his middos. He would only act when instructed by the Sanhedrin. (Midrash Shmuel) “Hashem sees the heart.” This pasuk perhaps defines Dovid’s legacy. Every Jew knows where to turn when he needs to pour out his heart; to connect with his heart and with Hashem. The Tehillim of Dovid, King of Yisroel. Who was Dovid, and how did he achieve that perfect heart, unbeknown even to his close family? Hashem Adonenu mah adir Shimcha bechol ha’aretz!... “Hashem, our Master! How mighty is Your Name in all the Earth, for You rest Your Glory in the Heavens!” (Tehillim 8, 2) Dovid, shepherding his flock, would lead the sheep out into the wilderness. There, he would be astounded at the vastness of Creation. He gazed at
the awe-inspiring sight of the stars of the Heavens, and was enthralled. “For I see Your Heavens, Your handiwork…” he continued. (Zohar Chadash, Shir HaShirim) He felt humbled before his Creator and wondered: “What is man that You remember him?” Why did You rest Your Presence on such a puny creature? “Hashem granted man the understanding to recognize G-d’s handiwork, to thank and praise Him. All His creations were made for man’s benefit. Man is therefore duty-bound to think deeply, to recognize G-d’s work and to give thanks for it all.” (Radak, Tehillim ibid) Awe-inspired by Creation, filled with gratitude at the privilege of serving Hashem, Dovid yearned to reflect His Glory in his own heart and deeds. “Hashem sees the heart.” This was Dovid, the collective heart of Klal Yisroel.

Suffice it to say that Dovid appreciated the secrets of Creation on a profoundly deep level, and it was at that level that his question was asked, and answered.

“They will stoop and fall.” That is exactly what happened to Golias. Not for his own glory; not for the sake of reward. Dovid fought for the sake of Hashem. “Man sees what the eyes behold.” The army of Yisroel saw a terrifying opponent and were close to despair. Dovid’s heart burned for the honor of Hashem. “Hashem sees the heart.”
When Hashem saved him… from the hand of Shaul (Shmuel II, 22) Dovid suffered greatly due to his anointment as king. He was pursued and persecuted by Shaul HaMelech, who saw him as a Mored B’Malchus, a rebel, who deserved to die.
There is something very striking about Dovid’s response to the harrowing situations he went through. Dovid learned great lessons from his experiences. Having received assistance in Nov, the city of Kohanim, Dovid escaped to the land of the Pelishtim. When Achish, King of Gass, become

hostile, Dovid found a novel way to deal with the problem: he feigned madness. (Shmuel I, 21.) Not surprisingly, this did not come naturally to Dovid. The Midrash (Shocher Tov) fills in some background. Dovid would praise Hashem for the beauty of His creations. “Wisdom is the most beautiful of Your Creations,” Dovid declared. One thing he could not understand was why the opposite of wisdom — insanity — exists. Hashem replied: You, Dovid, will need insanity.”[1] Now, in his fear at Achish’s hostility, Dovid davened: Yom ira ani elecha evtach — “On the day that I fear, I will trust in You.” (Tehillim 56, 4) Hashem responded: “What do you request, Dovid?” “Please, give me some of that insanity that You created!” Dovid pleaded. Hashem enabled Dovid to act the part to perfection, and Achish wanted to be rid of him, and fast. Dovid escaped unharmed, but a piece of the puzzle of Hashem’s Creation had been put into place. Dovid treasured the knowledge that even insanity has a purpose, and composed Tehillim 34, which begins L’Dovid b’shanoso es ta’amo — “By Dovid, when he changed his behavior before Avimelech…” [2] The Midrash explains that Dovid said: “How good is insanity! Wisdom in its time, insanity in its time.” Insanity was one of three facets of Creation whose purpose Dovid wished to under-

Recap: Now rested, Sara finds that her children have enjoyed the largess of the new neighbors she doesn’t even know. The neighbors invite her for Shalosh Seudaos.
The school was in a house. Sara sat with the principal, Mrs. Pomerantz, in what might have been a master bedroom walk-in closet, and discussed her daughter, Tehilla. “I’ll be very honest,” she said. “My daughter is on the spectrum.” She outlined Tehilla’s needs, but didn’t omit her strengths, and also expounded on the child’s resources, her shadow, the remedial programs available to her, everything they had worked to cultivate in her old school, and that Tehilla was now a migrant bird without a roost. Mrs. Pomerantz pulled a binder from the shelves behind her desk and flipped through a number of plastic sleeves. “We have some very bright and talented girls here. Girls who we’ll ensure are ready for a significant future. And we have girls whose scholastic or social prowess isn’t their finest point. We don’t differentiate, and we provide what each child needs, because our aim is Jewish education.” Sara was nodding vigorously. “But I have one question. Why, if everything worked so well for your child, are you bringing her here?” I have no choice, Sara fumbled for the most diplomatic way of saying. “We… decided that…” The principal seemed to not hear her. “Statistically, a school needs great siyata d’Shmaya and a lot of backing not to fold at some point. We’ve had great success, and I’m fairly confident. But… you’re moving from a very well-established place.” She stated it as an observation, but it was a question, an interrogation, almost, by a woman with keen insight. There was no escaping this woman; she knew, and she was honing in, to make Sara understand that she knew. Sara could talk about her daughter. About how Tehilla was difficult. But she had said that already. Or — and a dreadful feeling was anchoring in her bowels — she could talk about how she, herself, wasn’t a who’s-who, how she always lived out of the area, wasn’t from the patrons and pillars of the school… but she didn’t have to put herself down. She had

enough sense to know that her fears about being less were cloud threads — not rooted in the reality of her life, but born out of the shame of being ousted from the school she’d called her own. In real life, she was a successful career woman, a loving mother, her husband was a marbitz Torah, and she was the daughter of a wonderful woman who was one of the pioneers in Monsey. There was nothing to tell on herself. “Monsey isn’t what it was,” she finally told the woman with keen, beautiful eyes. “The landscape is changing, growing.. The parent body in our old school has swelled. While I once was the mainstay of the school, the face of the student body, they can no longer accommodate Tehilla and her needs. The place
There was no escaping this woman; she knew, and she was honing in, to make Sara understand that she knew. is just too big. That’s why I’m changing.” Mrs. Pomerantz nodded, once, twice. She dropped her pen and leaned forward. “Monsey is feeling seismic rumblings, and it’s those closest to the heart of who we are as a town, those sitting on the fault lines, who feel it first.” They discussed this at length, and by the time Sara left through the back door of the small house with a plaque nailed to the door pronouncing it a Bais Yaakov, she knew she had a sister in this town, someone just as passionate about Monsey, just as caring. And she had a school for Tehilla, a place where she could talk to the administration if she ran into issues, which she knew she inevitably would, a place that would partner with her to raise her daughter, challenges and all, into a proud Bais Yaakov student. She had a place where she just might want to send her other daughters, too. This gave her confidence, in a world where one child suddenly found herself school-less and the other’s stability was dangling by a thread. She wouldn’t, though. Every good move has to be countered against the losses and risks of change. But if it came to it, and she was no longer assured her place… She felt unwanted, unneeded, a new feeling for someone who grew up knowing every face. ***** In the end, it was Rivky who convinced her to go over to the Friedmans’ for Shalosh Seudos. The cake pops were a fun activity, especially as it was after the school interview, and Sara knew she needed to reconnect to what made her a mother, her

Now, in the kitchen under the fluorescent, with a bowl of chocolate dip in front of them, life was practically humming with calm. They sent them over on Friday. Sara set out twelve pops on a fancy disposable oblong tray. Tehilla had gotten the job of taking it over; when it came to exactness, and to reliability with getting done what she had set out to do, she was the best girl for the job. Now, on Shabbos, however, Sara found herself unenthusiastic to go over. She had gotten glimpses of all the neighbors, as their moving vans rolled in and out, as their faces flitted in and out the side doors. She was a friendly sort, really, she was. But most of these people were young. They all came from out of Monsey; prices had been designed that way, to attract a new influx. “Ma, everyone is already there. I was schmoozing with Laya’la and I saw.” Sara stretched luxuriously. “We can’t just send over cake pops and not show up on time. It looks snobby,” Rivky urged again. Rivky already had friends in the new building,

A sushi platter, a lox tray, a herring ensemble. Who even ate those things? which, especially for a young teen, was reason to impress. Sara gave her that. She instructed her girls to get ready and she got ready herself. The dining room she walked into was unlike anything she had seen. The smells in the hallway was still fresh, the paint and floor wax still breaking in. But overpowering the new-house smells were the perfumes of many aromatic sacks, situated anywhere they could be prettily displayed. The dining room itself took her breath away. The furniture, a dark, carved cherry, had marble implants on the armrests, and leather, studded seats. The window dressing was exquisite, and several heavy framed paintings smiled down from the walls. This had all taken her attention away from the table, which, when she laid eyes on it, made her eyes sting. Party planner dishes of various heights, and flower vases filled with coordinating bouquets lined the length of the table. A sushi platter, a lox tray, a herring ensemble. Who even ate those things? There was a wedding cake — ribbon and lace, they called it — and miniatures in fancy glass cups. Mid-table, a chocolate medley as wide as a desk breathed heavily. And then, salads. The wildness of color, the risk of in-
gredients, exotic mushrooms and sprouts, and colors of peppers and crispy peas and dressings and nuts and noodles. And her cake pops. Which, in the shadow of everything the table held, looked like a first grader’s Sukkah decoration on a wall full of lights. “Wow,” Sara said. “This is gorgeous. Who else is coming?” “It’s just us,” her neighbor, probably not much younger than she was, said. “Just the new neighbors.” She smiled excitedly, willing it to become a thing, the new neighbors, and she handed Sara a fresh hand towel wrapped in a loosely tied grosgrain ribbon and directed her to a mirrored sink. What Sara saw in that fancy mirror was a confused, possibly intimidated woman with the most inconceivable scowl on her face. She hastily rearranged her features and went to enjoy the feast. STRAWBERRY MOUSSE AND GRANOLA BY DRAIZY WERCBERGER
Directions: 1 cup heavy cream 2 tablespoons sugar 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 2 cups strawberry yogurt 1 cup store-bought granola
1. In a medium bowl, whip heavy cream until stiff peaks form. Slowly add the sugar and vanilla extract. Using a rubber spatula, mix strawberry yogurt into cream mixture. 2. Using a pastry bag, fill mousse cups 2/3 full. Top strawberry mousse with granola.

Directions:
¾ cup heavy cream ¼ cup sour cream ¼ cup maple syrup
Topping: Crushed vanilla sugar cookies Blueberries
1. Mix heavy cream and sour cream until stiff peaks form. While whipping, add maple syrup. Mix slowly until velvety smooth. 2. To assemble: Using a pastry bag, fill mousse cups 2/3 full. Top with crushed vanilla cookies and blueberries.

PEANUT BUTTER PARFAITS BY DRAIZY WERCBERGER
Parfaits: 1 ½ cup heavy cream, divided 2 tablespoons sugar ¼ cup peanut butter Crushed viennese crunch for topping
Crumb: ½ cup peanut butter 1 cup confectioners sugar
If you like peanut butter, you will really go for this elegant mousse.
Directions: 1. Mix crumb ingredients with your hands, until nice and crumbly. Set aside. 2. Whip 1 cup heavy cream until stiff peaks form. When stiff, slowly add 2 tablespoons sugar. 3. In a separate bowl, mix ¼ cup peanut butter and ½ cup unwhipped heavy cream. When smooth, add to the stiffened heavy cream mixture. 4. To assemble: Using a pastry bag, fill mousse cups 2/3 full with peanut butter cream. Then, spoon crumb mixture over mousse with a plastic spoon. Top with crushed viennese crunch.

6 eggs, separated 3 J&J whipped cream cheese 6 T. flour

1 tsp. vanilla sugar 1¼ c. sugar
3 egg whites
2 T. lemon juice
½ cup Splenda (Use another ¼ cup if you want it really sweet.)
1 c. whipped topping
1 tsp. lemon juice
4 squares melted dairy Alprose chocolate
2 T. flour 9 oz. plain Greek yogurt 1 tsp. vanilla extract
Directions: 1. Make a snow with the six egg whites and set aside.

2. In a separate bowl, combine yolks, cream cheese,

flour, lemon juice, vanilla sugar, and sugar. Mix until all ingredients are well combined. Set aside. 3. In a third bowl, whip the topping until peaks form. 4. Using a spatula, slowly combine yolk mixture with egg whites. When fully combined, slowly add the whip topping to the mixture. 5. Once everything is mixed in one bowl, pour 1/3 of the batter on top of the crust in the springform pan, and then dribble 1/3 of the melted chocolate on top the batter in the pan.
1. Blend first six ingredients until smooth. Add farmer cheese and continue blending until mixture is completely smooth. 2. Pour into six ramekins or disposable equivalent. 3. Bake at 325° for 35 - 45 minutes, until top begins to brown. If you want a hint of chocolate, drizzle a bit of chocolate syrup onto the “cakes” when cool.
6. Repeat #5 another two times, ending with the chocolate. (You will have batter, chocolate, batter, chocolate, batter, chocolate.) 7. Using a knife, run through the batter in zig zag motion to marbleize the chocolate and cheese. 8. Bake on 350° for one hour. 9. When done, leave the oven door shut, and let cake cool in the oven for an additional hour.

SUPERDELEGATES: SHOULD THEY BE COUNTED? To win the Democratic Party Nomination, candidates must reach 2,382 votes. As it stands, Hillary Clinton has approximately 1,847 delegates (results for the Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico have not been finalized yet). That means she is roughly 535 delegates short of winning the nomination. There are 714 delegates up for grabs on Tuesday. That means that Hillary must win 75% of the delegates on Tuesday night to secure the nomination. That is very unlikely to happen. Then again, if superdelegates are counted, Hillary has already secured the nomination. So, should they or shouldn’t they be in the initial tally? In theory, superdelegate votes only count at the convention. So, if Hillary can’t get those 535 delegates, she should not be considered the presumptive nominee. But of course, well over 500 of the super-delegates, (who

RYAN ENDORSE TRUMP On Thursday, June 2nd, Speaker of the House Paul Ryan finally announced that he would officially endorse Donald Trump for President. But it has not been a full-throated endorsement. They have both stated pretty clearly that they disagree on many issues, and Ryan has refused to give blanket approval to all of Trump’s positions. This became apparent only a day later, when Trump stated that a judge of Mexican descent who is presiding over a lawsuit brought against the now defunct Trump University could not be impartial because of his heritage. Ryan told a reporter, “Look, the comment about the judge the other day just was out of left field for my mind. It’s reasoning I don’t relate to. I completely disagree with the thinking behind that. And so, he clearly says and does things I don’t agree with, and

rs. Landau, the principal of Bnos Bluma High School, worked for five weeks, writing and rewriting her list of school policies. As a veteran principal, she had decades of experience in running a school, and knew just which rules were needed and which enforcements were necessary to help a school run efficiently and produce outstanding talmidos. She compiled her wisdom in a booklet, listing her rules and guidelines in a very clear and precise manner. After printing the booklets, Mrs. Landau posted signs throughout the school which stated that she was calling for an all-school assembly for that Friday morning, at which the school’s rules would be announced and the booklets distributed. Mrs. Fisher, a veteran teacher at Bnos Bluma, saw the signs in the hallway and had a concern. She worried that if the rules were given to the students on a Friday, the rules would be quickly forgotten over the weekend. Mrs. Fisher felt that the best way for the students to internalize the rules would be to receive them on a Sunday morning and then have the rules strictly enforced for a full week. Even so, the chachamim stuck to their ruling, explaining that the Torah is not in shamayim that they should listen to a bas kol, and that halacha follows the p’sak of the majority. The Gemara concludes with Eliyahu HaNavi informing R’ Noson that Hashem was rejoicing in the fact that His children had prevailed over Him. The Sefer HaChinuch, in Mitzvah 496, explains that in truth, the opinion of R’ Eliezer had indeed been correct, yet the chachamim had acted correctly in enforcing the Torah’s rule that the halacha follows the majority opinion. Hashem was rejoicing that, even though the majority opinion had been mistaken, they were following His rules in forming and enforcing their policy in accordance with the majority’s p’sak. Hashem grants authority to the leaders of every generation. At the time of Matan Torah, there was only Moshe Rabbeinu, and therefore he was our da’as Torah. Later, this authority was given to the Sanhedrin. Today, we have gedolim. Accepting Moshe Rabbeinu’s authority was the final step of the B’nei Yisroel’s preparation to receive the Torah. Since every Shavuos contains the light of Matan Torah, we can choose to tap into this light and receive the Torah anew each year. One of the ways in which we can make ourselves fit to receive the Torah is to commit ourselves to consult and accept da’as Torah in all our affairs. May the ohr haTorah shine upon us all, and may we all have a joyful, happy yom tov.

Without having spoken a single word to Klal Yisrael, and before giving us His Torah, Hashem had already taught us one of the most important principles of the Torah: we must listen to da’as Torah, and He will uphold their authority over us. The Gemara in Bava Metzia 59b illustrates this point. There was a machlokes between R’ Eliezer and the chachamim about whether or not a certain oven was tamei. The majority ruled one way, while R’ Eliezer held the other way. R’ Eliezer brought proof that the halacha should be as he believed by bringing forth a number of mofsim, concluding with the grand finale: a bas kol came forth from Shamayim

Extending the Life of
YOUR BLOOMS What works and what doesn’t
You must have already heard many methods of keeping flowers fresh. But do any of them really extend the life of your blossoms? There’s only one way of knowing: by experimenting and then analyzing the results. While many factors come into play (the amount of water, the temperature, and the quality of the flowers), these are the overall results of one such experiment. Experiment #1
Put crushed aspirin into the water before adding the flowers. THEORY: It increases the acidity of the water, and most flowering plants grow better in acidic soil. METHOD: We dropped a 325-milligram aspirin tablet into clean water and let it dissolve, then changed the water every other day. RESULTS: By day 2, the flowers slumped over due to weakened stems. By day 3 they looked droopy and sad, and then continued to deteriorate rapidly, and were dead by day 6. VERDICT: An aspirin a day may keep the doctor away, but it does more harm than good for flowers.
Expirement #3
Use flower food. THEORY: Flower food contains biocide to kill bacteria, acids which help the stems drink water, and sugar to nourish the blooms. METHOD: Following the directions on the packet, we mixed the flower food with lukewarm water, and then changed the water every day. RESULTS: The flowers didn’t open all the way, but stayed alive longer and don’t droop as much as the others, staying pretty good until day 7. VERDICT: Definitely helpful, but there are better options.

Experiment #2
Add vinegar to the water. THEORY: Encourages buds to open and last longer. METHOD: We added two teaspoons vinegar and two teaspoons sugar to a liter of water. RESULTS: The flowers held up at first. On day four they burst open, and then on day 5 collapsed, their stems folding over the vase. VERDICT: It does something to those flowers, but I’m not sure that it’s good.

Don’t try anything exotic. Just use plain water.
Put a penny into the water.
THEORY: Clean, fresh water is the simplest way to keep flowers alive longer.
THEORY: The reaction of copper and water will help kill bacteria that are to blame for a bloom’s early demise.
METHOD: We changed the water every other day. RESULTS: The flowers stayed open longer than the rest, but became soft and mushy. They died on day 9. VERDICT: Definitely better than some of the other tips!

Add some 7UP or other lemon-lime flavored soda. THEORY: The carbonation adds air to the water and sugar, and the acid seems to give the flowers all the sustenance it needs. METHOD: We mixed three parts water and one part soda in the vase and changed the water/soda mixture every other day.
METHOD: Drop a clean penny into the flower vase. RESULTS: The flowers took longer to open, but lasted well. By day 7, the stems headed in every possible direction, but the blooms held up fairly well. VERDICT: While you’re not left with the nicest bouquet, you get your money’s worth out of this one.
RESULTS: The flowers held up beautifully, and on day 12 they were still perky, fresh-looking, and just a little bit curled and faded. VERDICT: We have a winner!
Additional Tips for the Lemon-Lime Soda Method: • Do not use diet drinks or different sodas, as they contain too much acid for the flowers. • Add a few drops of bleach to the formula to keep bacteria from forming.
Some tips that work all the time: • Buy right: look for the freshest bunch, avoiding flowers that are fully open. Look out for slimy stems, brown leaves, or wilting petals and leave those behind. • Use a very clean vase. Bacteria is the prime killer of flowers. • Before you place the flowers into a vase, cut the stems at an angle, removing one to two inches. Do so underwater, either in a basin full of water or by holding the stems under running tap water. This prevents air from entering the stems, causing the flowers to deteriorate, the same way it turns apples and avocadoes brown. • Gently remove the lower leaves from the base of the stems, so that no leaves should be sub-
merged in the water. These leaves can start to rot, causing the bacteria to kill the flowers. • Change the water every day, or as often as possible. FAST FACTS: • The family of stringed instruments consists of the bass, the cello, the violin, and the violin’s slightly larger cousin, the viola. All of those are played by using a be-haired stick, called a “bow.” The harp and the piano are also considered members of the stringed family, although the harp is plucked and the piano hammered to produce sound. No! Don’t head for the toolbox! With your fingers please... • The violin is a complex instrument; not only is it the hardest instrument in the world to learn how to play, each violin is expertly crafted from roughly 70 pieces of wood. • The violin is such a difficult instrument to master that in Japanese culture children typically begin learning to play violin by the age of five. Sure beats hopscotch, eh? • Forget exercise! Playing the violin burns roughly 150-230 calories per hour. It’s quite common for concert violinists to drip with sweat after performing an especially elaborate piece. • For other ways to work out with your violin, you can do like the man from Switzerland who set the record for backwards cycling while playing his violin… He peddled for five hours and eight minutes while making music! Backwards! • The inventor of roller skates also tried to make a scene when he introduced his wheeled toy to the world. Playing his violin, he raced into a ballroom, forgetting that he hadn’t yet invented breaks… He crashed into a mirror and smashed his violin to bits!
TOOLS OF THE TRADE • High-quality violin bows consists of between 150-200 pieces of hair, usually from white-tailed Siberian, Canadian, or Mongolian horses, due the thickness of the hair that being in cold climate produces. MUSIC AS MEDICINE • There’s nothing more beautiful than the melodious voice of the violin serenading its listeners into a feeling of tranquility — at least in my opinion. Stringed instruments, in general, possess the ability to almost “talk” through the music the player produces. Little wonder that Shaul HaMelech required a skilled player of the kinor to lift him from depressive spells. He found that in the persona of his future successor, Dovid HaMelech. • But what did Dovid HaMelech play? Was it the harp? The lyre? The violin? Somewhere along the line, it seems that the direct translation of “nevel v’kinor” was lost. While most authorities say that the “kinor” was a large harp, others say that it was a type of violin. Most however, agree that the “nevel” was a small, symmetric type of harp, now known as the lyre. • Modern science is just now catching up to the wisdom of our ancient kings. Researchers at one of the most respected institutes of higher learning now believe that the harp vibrates at the same timbre of human cells. How exactly that works, I am not completely sure. I just know it makes you feel good! In fact, they’ve found harp music to be unusually effective with helping heart patients regulate their heartbeats, ease pain and depression, increase oxygen absorption, and help with symptoms of nerve disorders like Parkinson’s and Multiple Sclerosis. There’s even a name for this type of musical medicine: Vibroacoustic Harp Therapy (VAHT). • It’s not just the listener who benefits from hearing stringed instruments; the brains of violinists are more well-developed than those of non-violinists, with the both sides of the brain being able to easily work in tandem.

FINDING THE RIGHT CHILDCARE ARRANGEMENT You talk about it in line at the grocery store, outside with your neighbors, and at the dinner table. It’s the subject of endless conversations — childcare arrangements. In a child’s heart, no one can take the place of the parent. But there are times when you cannot be at your child’s side. Choosing the person who will care for your youngster at that time is one of the most significant challenges of a parent. There are many alternatives to consider and explore. Does your child need individual attention or will your child’s social skills thrive in a group? Location, timing, and financial considerations also come into play. In-home childcare, an option I tapped into, has many advantages. The comfort and consistency of familiar surroundings are of the paramount reasons I tried this. With a caring sitter, there is more of a chance to form a close bond. It also allows for less harried mornings, less time spent commuting, and possibly some relief from household chores.

For special-needs children receiving many therapies, this may be a viable choice. The child can receive the therapy at a time when he is rested and well fed with hopefully much carryover from the adults in his life. There is also less of a chance of children getting exposed to germs and illnesses — especially important for the medically fragile child. However, sometimes therapists may recommend a group setting, so that children learn from other typically developing children. This is particularly true when the delay is in the speech area; a warm and loving small group may be just the setting to jumpstart the language development. Group settings vary in size, and when making a decision for a child, it is important to hear how large the group will potentially be. It is also important to actually see the place, and ensure there is enough space for regular daily activities including play, eating, and sleeping. Using the babysitter who runs a group in her own house is also a very common route to take; however, be

sure it is someone you trust. Is she so busy running her household, tackling the laundry, and cleaning while caring for your baby that her attention is lacking? I’ve been lucky enough to be blessed with many wonderful babysitters where this was not a concern. By checking out references, as well as actually seeing your child feeling comfortable at the site, you can assure your peace of mind. Programs with state or federal regulations, including daycare and Early Head Start/Head Start, as well as special-needs center based programs adhere to specific policies which may benefit a special needs child. The child/teacher ratio is usually smaller, there is usually a wide variety of toys and equipment, and the health, safety, and education aspects of the program are monitored. At Wellspring, I carefully review the options available with parents on a monthly basis. When relevant, I help parents apply for preschool services, which are available for children ages three to five. Does your toddler feel comfortable with his caregiver? It is normal for a typically shy tot to take time to adjust to a stranger. Also important, is your caregiver comfortable with your child? Is she kind, patient, and caring?
A good caregiver is responsive, communicative, and respectful of your child’s and your wishes.
Ask about her approach to disciplining youngsters. Look for a program where the goal is to help children learn self-control. Teachers should respect their charges and use positive discipline techniques, including problem solving and discussions. Physical or verbal abuse, isolation without supervision, shaming, and ignoring conflicts among children shouldn’t be evident. You also want to ensure appropriate safety precautions are taken: outlets covered, there are age-appropriate toys, stairs are gated, and all equipment in good condition. If you would like your toddler to receive therapy in the playgroup, check before you enroll that this is a possibility. When exploring possibilities, try to observe the site in action. A good time to visit is when children are likely to be difficult, such as before nap time or when they are just arriving. See how the teacher handles disputes, separations, crying, and behavioral issues. Do the children and teachers look cheerful? Is there constant supervision indoors and out? The daycare program that seems closed to an occasional visit by a parent may indeed have something to
hide. When you visit the facility, make an effort to avoid disrupting activities and try to stay in the background. A parent’s work is never done. Once you find a childcare arrangement that works for you, keep looking for signs that everything is going well. The development of new eating or sleeping problem, extreme unhappiness meeting a teacher (beyond normal separation anxiety), new behavioral problems are all signs to look for. A good caregiver is responsive, communicative, and respectful of your child’s and your wishes. If you are concerned, take action, and consider revamping your arrangement. Here’s hoping your choice setting will always be an ideal one for all involved.

SIMPLE PEOPLE, NOBLE LESSONS It’s five o’clock on a blustery, wet afternoon. I am sitting on the bus, finally heading for home after a tiring day running errands. The plastic seat creaks under me as I shift the packages and parcels on my lap. The damp, cold weather matches my dismal mood. I can sense the beginnings of the flu; a scratchy throat and aching head. I gaze out the window at the rain slithering down the grimy windows, muddy rivulets snaking down the river of glass. The bus lurches forward, stopping at the crowded bus stop. A group of chattering schoolgirls board, blue uniform blouses and navy pleated skirts peeking out from under their jackets. Pausing long enough to hand the driver their bus tickets, they make their way to the rear of the bus. Their muted voices fade away as they cluster at the back. Several young boys, hefting heavy schoolbags, stand in the aisle next to my seat. One thin youngster is clad only in a sweater, his corkscrew peyos dripping onto his hunched shoulders. Another boy opens a pack of potato chips and passes the bag to his friends. They munch contentedly, cheerfully ignoring their damp feet and soaking clothes. The odor of wet wool permeates the crowded bus. The bus plods along its route, an ungainly behemoth trudging down the foggy road. A long line of people is waiting at the next stop. An elderly man gets on the bus with two large bakery bags. The rich,
yeasty smell fills the bus with a tantalizing aroma of cinnamon and fresh bread. “Sure smells good,” says the bus driver, indicating the cookies the man is holding. He collects the fare,

handing back some coins in change. The old man smiles warmly, his face a patchwork of fine wrinkles. He opens one of the bags, plucking out a fresh pastry, which he offers to the surprised driver. A huge grin splits his face as he accepts the still warm cinnamon bun. “Thanks a lot, mister,” he says appreciatively. He waits until the octogenarian finds a seat, then presses on the gas pedal. The doors groan open at the next stop and a woman with four small children clamber up the steps. They clutch their mother’s coat as the bus surges forward, and she struggles to maneuver with the little hands gripping her tenaciously. Two teenagers rise hurriedly, and graciously offer the family their seats. Grateful, she and the children squeeze into the two seats. I can’t help noticing the children’s worn, patched clothes. The boys’ pants look thin and threadbare. A pale gleam of skin shows, where the bottoms of their pants struggle to meet their socks. The eldest, a girl who doesn’t appear to be more than eight or nine, has shabby, mended tights. I sigh in sympathy. I glance at the mother, her simple scarf her only ornament. How difficult it must be for her, traipsing around in cold, wet weather, in such flimsy clothing. With four little children, yet, in tow! I
steal another look at her. The children are complaining, uncomfortable at being squashed together on two seats. The youngest is making hungry noises, whimpering unhappily. The mother replies in soothing tones, stroking the little girl’s cheek. I am amazed at her patience and selfcomposure. She reaches into her large pocketbook and I am convinced she is searching for some snack to pacify her grumbling brood. To my astonishment, she takes out a small Sefer Tehillim and opens the well-thumbed pages. The children’s clamoring gradually subsides, apparently lulled by the sweet voice murmuring softly. A small, serene smile plays on her lips as she creates a small island of kedusha on the noisy, congested bus. My tension eases and I feel my mood lifting, her unruffled calm a soothing balm to my gloomy emotions. As I get off the bus, I can’t help wondering how many “simple” Jews I might dismiss without a second thought, without realizing the incredible kochos and middos they possess. I turn towards home, a renewed sense of admiration for Klal Yisroel buoying my step and lightening my heart.

THE AUTHENTIC FLAVOR When I was a newlywed kallah, with Shavuos approaching, my husband nostalgically made mention of the layered cheesecake his mother used to make only once a year for Shavuos. Being as he was just off the boat from Eretz Yisroel, I figured it would mean a lot to him to have a taste from home, here in America. So, I quickly ran out to
different sisters-in-law, inquiring about the Shvigger’s Special Cheesecake. None of them knew precisely how to make it, so I just tried to figure it out on my own. My husband came home to a very proud wife on Erev Shavuos, when I presented him with my work, full of heart. To say he was delighted is an understatement. He was positively glowing with appreciation for my thoughtfulness. Well, this became the Shavuos tradition, as each year I learned the tricks of this creation a tad bit better. This year, as we have moved to the other side of the ocean, I will have no problem getting just the right ingredients, for my cheesecake is at home here in Eretz Yisroel. Every makolet stocks their shelves with Osem biskvitim, and displays typical Israeli-style layered cheesecakes.

Well, this year it’s me pining for my taste of home. It’s funny, how sometimes it’s the small stuff in life that can be harder to sweat than the real major ones. Moving an ocean away from home and all of the adjustments associated with relocating to Eretz Yisroel may seem an insurmountable step to some. Though surprisingly, that’s not what you hear us chutznikim discussing when talking about what we left behind. If you would listen in to one of our animated conversations on the park benches, you would see all heads nod along when I loudly proclaim: “One thing I really miss is a good cheesecake and Mehadrin coffee yogurt.” Flipping through the pages of the weekly magazines, I can literally eat the dairy products off the glossy pages. What intrigues me, though, is all the hype around the Greek yogurt lately. When I left the U.S., Greek yogurts were not at all the rage yet. What’s this boasting of ”Authentic Greek, don’t go for imitation brand,” all about? As far as I know, yogurt is yogurt. Greek yogurt aside, I don’t expect anyone to surprise me with a real farmer cheese cheesecake,
Here I don’t need cheesecake to remind me of that timeless love and incredible sacrifice to Hashem and His Torah. but I don’t feel sorry for myself, as I thought I would. I suspect it’s the reason behind the minhag of eating cheesecake on Shavuos in the first place. We are reminded of the sacrifice of the Yidden in the midbar for throwing away their
treif dishes at Kabbalas HaTorah, thereby displaying their love of Hashem and His Torah. Well, here in this land flowing with milk and honey, I don’t need cheesecake to remind me of that timeless love and incredible sacrifice to Hashem and his Torah; I live it. I imbibe it with the milk in my coffee, in the oh-so-different taste
of Israeli cheese, in the very air that I breathe in the Holy Land. This year, I will embrace the Torah on Shavuos once again, with love, with the kedusha of Eretz Yisroel permeating my very being. And instead of feasting on rich, creamy, American cheesecake, I will have a luscious taste of real Torah, here in its native land. I believe the authentic flavor of Torah can best be savored in its country of origin — in Eretz Yisroel .

Many drops of water can wear a hole in a stone. A dripping faucet can wear holes in your wallet! Even a slow drip can waste 7-10 gallons of water a day — more than 3,600 gallons of water per year. Yes, you can fix faucets yourself. With the right parts and tools, it’s not difficult. Be sure to purchase the correct replacement parts, as there are many types and sizes of faucets. Before shopping, you may want to disassemble the faucet to check which parts you need.
Before You Start 1. 2. 3. 4. 5.
Shut off the hot and cold water intake valves under the sink . Open the faucet to let any remaining water drain out of both the hot and cold sides. Plug the sink, so small parts won’t fall down the drain as you work. Put duct tape on the jaws of your wrench to avoid scratching the faucet. Clear space on the counter or floor to lay out the pieces of the faucet in order as you remove them. This will make reassembly easier. 6. If there is scale on the faucet, use white vinegar and a plastic scouring pad to clean it.
Compression Faucets Separate handles for hot and cold indicate compression faucets. 1. Pry off the decorative cap on the handle. Remove the exposed screw. 2. Pull off the handle and use a wrench to unscrew the packing nut. 3. Unscrew the stem. If the faucet is leaking, replace the seat washer (the thicker washer below the O-ring that sits on a screw). If the handle is leaking, pop the stem out of the packing nut and replace the O-ring. Be sure to get the correct size washer/ring.

4. Before installing the new washer, check the seat — the base below the washer. If it is badly pitted or has scale on it, clean it with vinegar and if needed, use a valve-seat dresser to grind it smooth again. 5. Coat the new washer and/or Oring with nontoxic, heat-proof plumber’s grease. 6. Reassemble the faucet, tightening the packing nut and screw handle. 7. Turn the water intake valves back on and test the faucet.

Ball-type Faucets A ball faucet has a single handle for both hot and cold, and a ball inside that swivels to direct the water flow from the intake pipes. We recommend you buy a replacement kit for about $20. These kits have all the pieces and specialty tools you need. 1. Pry off the cap on the handle. This is often a small round button that is half red and half blue. Remove the exposed screw and lift off the handle. 2. Use adjustable pliers to remove the cap and adjusting ring. Remember to cover the jaws of the pliers or wrench to protect the finish on the cap. 3. Using the special tool in the repair kit, loosen the cam and lift it out along with the cam washer and the rotating ball. The washer or seal may be attached to the cam. The ball may be made of stainless steel or rubber. 4. Carefully remove the inlet seals and springs with a needle-nose pliers or tweezers. Note how the coneshaped springs are situated in the seats. 5. Remove the spout by simultaneously rotating and lifting it. 6. Remove the O-rings, using the tip of a screwdriver if necessary. If the rings are stuck, cut them with a utility knife. Avoid scratching the faucet. 7. Coat the new O-rings with silicone/ plumber’s grease and install them on the faucet cylinder. 8. Reassemble the faucet. 9. Turn the water intake valves back on and test the faucet.

Cartridge Faucets There are many types of cartridge faucets. We’ll discuss two types.
CERAMIC FAUCET 1. 1. The handle often has a decorative cap. Pry it off and remove the exposed screw. Lift the handle off. 2. If there is no cap, turn the faucet handle away from you, and locate the set screw. Remove the screw and lift off the handle. 3. 2. If there is a metal ring below the handle (escutcheon cap), lift it off. 4. 3. Unscrew the disk cylinder mounting screws and lift out the cylinder. 5. 4. With a blunt screwdriver, pry out the seals from the cylinder. Soak the seals in white vinegar for several hours to remove scale deposits. Use white vinegar and a plastic scouring pad to clean the cylinder openings. Rinse off the vinegar well. If necessary, replace the seals. Reassemble the faucet. 6. 5. Turn the water intake valves back on. Move the handle to the “on” position and very slowly turn the water back on. The force of a strong flow of water can break the ceramic disk.
CARTRIDGE DISK II 7. 1 Pry off the cap on the handle. Remove the handle screw. Tilt the handle back and pull it off. 8. 2. If there is a threaded retaining clip, hold the cartridge in place and use needle-nose pliers to remove the clip, pulling the cartridge straight up. 9. 3. Remove the spout and cut off the O-rings with a utility knife. Avoid scratching the faucet. Coat the new O-rings with nontoxic, heat-proof plumber’s grease before placing them in the unit. 10. To replace the cartridge, be sure to get a new one of the correct length. Also match the stem end where the handle attaches. 11. 4. Reassemble the faucet. 12. 5. Turn the water intake valves back on and test the faucet. Now that you can fix faucets, everyone in the neighborhood will want to “tap” you to fix their leaks too!

NO-BAKE CHECKERBOARD CHEESECAKE
Are you looking for something to make for Shavuos that is milchig, easy, and mess-free? Here is a recipe for a checkerboard “cake” that is so easy to make, yet pretty and tasty.
INGREDIENTS: • • • •
2 packages Zebra Cookies 2 containers whipped cream cheese 8 teaspoons sugar 4 teaspoons vanilla extract
Place a heaping teaspoon of the cheese mixture on a zebra cookie
Mix the cream cheese, sugar, and vanilla extract well.
Spread the cheese over the whole cookie.
Add another cookie with the brown on top of the white, and white on top of the brown stripe. Place a second cookie on top of the first, arranging the white over the brown and brown over white stripes.
Place another teaspoon of the cheese mixture and spread it over the cookie.
Spread some more cheese and place another cookie with the white on top of the brown, and the brown on top of the white.
Slice the layered cookies with a sharp knife and Spread some of the cheese mixture on top of each slice.

If your offer is accepted, the place you’ve chosen will be your home for the next several years. Not only should you feel emotionally satisfied by your choice, but you should also feel financially comfortable that you’re buying a home you can afford and that you feel confident will hold onto its value or hopefully increase in value over the years. While no one can know for sure what will happen to housing values, if you make the choice to buy a home that meets your needs and priorities you’ll be happy to live in it for years to come.
NEIGHBORHOOD OR HOME AMENITIES For some homebuyers, living in a particular neighborhood takes precedence over all other priorities, but for others, the home itself matters more. Ideally, you’ll find the perfect home in the neighborhood you love at a price that’s below your budget, but realistically, most people have to make some compromises. You (and your spouse, or family) should make a list of what features you want in a home, such as the number of bedrooms, number of bathrooms, size of rooms, possibility of expanding, storage space, floor plans, a fenced yard, granite counters in the kitchen etc., and then rank them in terms of priorities. One of my clients that was searching for a home made an offer on a house, but changed her

Ideally, you’ll find the perfect home in the neighborhood you love at a price that’s below your budget, but realistically, most people have to make some compromises.
WHEN TO COMPROMISE Once you’ve determined whether the location or the house itself matters most, you may have to compromise on some of your priorities. If the location is the most important factor for your home choice, but you find that homes are priced above your budget, you can compromise in several ways: Look for a different home type within the community, such as a smaller single family home,
a townhome, or condominium. Decide if you can live with one less bedroom or other features on your list. Consult with a lender or a financial planner to discuss your options for increasing your budget. While no one should overspend on a home, you should recognize that going $10,000 above your price range when you’re financing your purchase with a 30-year fixed-rate loan will actually add only about $30 to your monthly payment. Keep in mind that interest rates move up and down, and if you are on a very tight budget this may make a major difference to you. Lower your expectations about the condition of the home. While everyone prefers a move-in ready home, you can often get a better deal on a home that needs some cosmetic repairs. Be careful, though, to have a home inspection and to evaluate the structure of the home to see that it meets your needs. Moving walls and adding a
bathroom are costly renovations, while painting and replacing appliances are more reasonable. If you have your heart set on a specific home style or a home with a larger yard for your children or to garden, your compromise is more likely to be in the location. If you’re willing to commute farther or perhaps choose a home in a community next to, but not in the “hot” neighborhood, you can often find a more affordable home that fulfills your wish list. That is where an experienced realtor plays an important role and can help you determine when and how to compromise. He should take the time to show you a variety of alternatives so you can make an informed decision about when to make an offer.
