I would like share a nice experience I had. I place a phone order each Wednesday morning at Buy Rite Supermarket. Their quality service for phone orders is unmatched! Every week, when I place my order, I tell the sales rep to write on my list that the order should not go out before a Monsey View is included. One week, my order arrived without The Monsey View and I was so disappointed. I called Buy Rite and told them, “Why do I have of all the good food, if I don’t have what to read while I enjoy it? They said that they have two options for me. They will either deliver it separately, or they could mail it to me! Later that day, I checked my mailbox to find that one of their workers had delivered a Monsey View to my home!

Thank you for providing this open forum for the community to voice their opinions and concerns! The summer is here and our children are spending a lot of time outdoors. In many neighborhoods, children have lots of friends, and the boys and/or girls play as a team. In other places, there may not be such achdus, or after a while children get into fights. My children are being taught the “model” of how to act when someone is being bullied. They are told that they have the power to stop a bully by being an active bystander. That means that when someone observes another child being hurt, even a stranger, they should speak up. My ten-year-old son was bullied by a neighbor down the block. Later, he was crying to me, “Mommy, a mother and child saw him running after me, heard me scream, and just ignored us. Why didn’t they try to stop him?” He was hurt! Of course, some mothers will say, “Let a mother deal with her own child.” True, if the mother is aware of her child’s actions, and takes care of the issue. But, if you see a child repeatedly fight and bully, you must be an active bystander. As the motto of the New York metro system goes, “If you see something, say something.” May we all have a wonderful summer full of achdus. S.Y.

While driving in Boro Park on 60th Street, a car came from 13th Ave. and crashed into me. It was what the insurance called a Tbone. The car hit me exactly on the driver’s side. My airbag deployed and the car looked like it was totaled. I was very shaken up. The driver of the other car came yelling at me that I ran a red light. Luckily, there were witnesses that told him he was the one who ran the red light. The police came and wrote a police report. The driver told them that he thought he had the right of way. All except for one of the witnesses disappeared. The one witness was the driver behind me. He gave the police his information and added that he had a Dash Camera. The Dash Camera had taken a video of what had occurred. The witness told me he bought it because he had been in an accident like mine where the other side claimed he didn’t do anything wrong and there was no way to prove it. With the video, the insurance company saw clear proof that I had not caused the accident and therefore declared me free from any fault in the accident.

How to Reverse Leptin Resistance Many people have asked me how they can find out whether they are leptin-resistant. My answer is always, “Look in the mirror – that should give you a pretty accurate indication.” There are five steps one can take to reverse leptin resistance. 1. Sleep 2. Finish eating dinner two to three hours before going to bed. 3. Instead of eating two or three big meals each day, eat smaller meals more frequently. 4. Reduce your carbohydrate intake. 5. Incorporate some form of protein into every meal. Today I want to focus on Rule #1. Sleep is very important, and many of us underestimate the impact it has on us. I sometimes wonder why so many people are proud that they can function on very little sleep? Or why some people choose to stay up late to work? It’s true that people might need different amounts of sleep at different times and stages in their lives, but Hashem intended for us human beings to sleep and eat. You can try to fight nature, but you will risk facing many consequences regarding your physical and emotional health. In fact, before the age of electricity, people went to sleep as soon as it got dark! They didn’t need alarm clocks to wake them up because daylight took care of that for them. If you remember having a blackout and experiencing life without electricity, you know how it feels. There’s no staying up and trying to take on the world at night without any lights. There’s no baking, cooking, studying, or laundry to do. In fact, the best thing you can do at night is to find your bed. Now, we’re not going back in time, nor do we really want to be without electricity, but in our time it’s important to at least get a good

night’s sleep. Try turning off the lights at 10 pm and winding down with a warm cup of tea at the end of the day. You do not want to start getting all hyped up and energetic late at night. Many people say that they are night owls, but I think that’s simply because their bodies are out of sync with their sleep cycle. Once you break the habit and start going to sleep before midnight (and I’m being very lenient here), then your body will allow you to get into the pattern of becoming a morning person. It might take time, but if you’re leptin resistant and struggling with your weight and fatigue, then you might want to consider going to bed earlier. The benefits of doing so are truly amazing. Since leptin is intricately involved in appetite regulation and metabolism, the chemical informs your brain when you are full, when it needs to start burning calories, and by extension, when it should create energy for your body to use. (Every single function of the body uses calories, from your heartbeat to blinking your eyes.) Leptin triggers a series of messages and responses that start in the hypothalamus and end in the thyroid gland. In turn, the thyroid gland controls the way your body stores and uses energy. During sleep, our leptin levels increase. They tell our brain that we have plenty of energy for the time being and that there’s no need to trigger feelings of hunger. However, when you don’t get enough sleep, you end up with not enough leptin in your body. That means your brain will interpret that you don’t have enough energy for your needs. As soon as your

brain detects this, it will tell you that you’re hungry, although you already have enough stored fat and don’t need any additional food. So, your body will take the calories from the food you just ate and “store” them as fat! The decrease in leptin brought on by sleep deprivation can result in constant feelings of hunger, plus a general slowdown of your metabolism. Another hormone related to sleep and weight gain is ghrelin. The purpose of ghrelin is basically the exact opposite of leptin. Leptin tells your brain when you’re full, while ghrelin lets your brain know when you need to eat. During sleep, our ghrelin levels decrease, since sleep re-

quires far less energy than being awake. And you wouldn’t want your night to be disturbed by hunger. People who don’t sleep enough, as well as people who have abnormal sleeping patterns, end up with too much ghrelin in their system. Too much ghrelin signals hunger, while too little leptin doesn’t tell people when they’re full. • Try to aim for seven to nine hours of sleep each night. • Increase your exercise level, but ideally you should avoid working out within three hours of going to bed. • Avoid consuming caffeine around bedtime – caffeine can keep you awake at night.

• Get a mask for your eyes. You want to sleep in total darkness so as not to have any disruptions in your sleep cycle. I hope that you feel ready now to start turning off the lights, winding down, and getting a good night’s sleep. Remember, tomorrow is a new day. It sounds so cliché, but it is the truth: life is filled with ups and downs. Nobody complains about the good times, of course, but the painful reality is that suffering is inevitable for everyone. Indeed, the Gemara in Arachin 16b says that if a person goes for forty days without experiencing any suffering, it means he already received his entire Olam Habah and has no more reward awaiting him, or it is a sign that a major catastrophe is forthcoming. There are different types of suffering. There is the unpredictable, everyday type of suffering that plagues everyone: lost objects, stubbed toes, toothaches, missed school buses, unexpected expenses, etc. Then there are the more devastating types of suffering: circumstances of deep pain that last for an extended period of time. Examples of this type of suffering include long-term poverty, extended illness of oneself or a loved one, ongoing loneliness, or being trapped in a difficult relationship, whether this relationship is with a spouse, parent, teacher, employer, etc. A person who lives his life reactively will naturally experience life as an emotional roller coaster. The easier times will find him content, and the more difficult times will find him in turmoil. It seems impossible that a person could live out his

life with emotional equilibrium, as there is no person who can live out his life without going through times of deep pain. It says in this week’s Parsha, “Vaya’as kein Aharon… – Aharon did so; he lit the lamps toward the face of the Menorah, just as Hashem had commanded Moshe.” (Bamidbar 8:3) Rashi comments that Aharon’s praise

A person who lives with emunah will avoid the emotional roller coaster of life’s inevitable ups and downs, and find himself in a constant state of emotional equilibrium. is that he did not change. Aharon did exactly as he was commanded to do, neither adding to nor subtracting from the mitzvah. One might wonder why this is a praise? After all, this is what we would expect from a tzaddik, especially one of Aharon HaKohen’s caliber. The reality is that consistency in life is not simple at all. Aharon HaKohen personally did the mitzvah, never giving it over to any of his sons to perform (sefer Moshav Zekeinim),

every single day for the rest of his life, regardless of whatever was happening in his personal life – even after the deaths of his sons Nadav and Avihu. What was the key to Aharon HaKohen’s unwavering emotional equilibrium? How did he manage to stay even-keeled despite the numerous ups and downs that are inevitable in life? The Imrei Menachem of Alexander, ztz”l, cites the Midrash: “R’ Pinchas said in the name of R’ Shmuel bar Abba: one who serves his master properly merits freedom. From where do we know this? From Yosef, who served his master faithfully and merited freedom.” (Midrash Shir Hashirim 1:1) The Imrei Menachem quotes R’ Menachem Mendel of Vorki as saying that serving one’s master properly means believing in hashgacha pratis and recognizing that all the circumstances of one’s life come from Hashem, the true Master. Yosef HaTzaddik found himself a slave to an Egyptian master. Rather than rebelling against the horrendous circumstance in which he found himself or falling into an understandable depression, Yosef instead recognized that Hashem had orchestrated all the events of his life from pleasant to unpleasant. Yosef not only accepted his lot in life graciously, but he threw himself whole-

Hilchos Shabbos heartedly into his avodah. Recognizing Hashem’s hashgacha over his life, Yosef viewed every command from Potiphar as if Hashem Himself had spoken the command, and he viewed his avodah under Potifar as avodas Hashem. In the z’chus of his emunah that Hashem had decreed his enslavement, Yosef ultimately merited redemption. The Imrei Menachem explains that every person should aim to recognize Hashem’s hashgacha over his life and subordinate himself to Hashem’s will in every situation. By living one’s life in this way, we can fulfill Hashem’s will at all times and merit great happiness, no matter what our circumstances. Taking this concept to its logical limit, R’ Zusia of Anipoli said that even if Hashem would command him to go into gehinnom, he would jump in with great simcha because he would be fulfilling Hashem’s command. A person who lives with emunah will avoid the emotional roller coaster of life’s inevitable ups and downs, and find himself in a constant state of emotional equilibrium. Thus, we see that Aharon HaKohen’s greatness was his constant balance under every circumstance. No matter what was happening around him, nothing happened to him – he did not change. The fact is that in many cases, a person who is suffering is unable to extricate himself from the situation through any natural means. This is the greatest proof that the situation came from Hashem and Hashem alone. By focusing our intellect on this logic, a person can grab hold of this emotional lifeline and anchor himself onto Hashem. The Imrei Menachem teaches us that even when there is a gezeira that a person must undergo a period of suffering, he can merit deliverance by following Yosef’s example. Living with emunah has the power to not only keep us in a state of emotional balance, but it can even be our ticket to freedom from the painful circumstance itself. Had Yosef rebelled, he might not have been released from bondage – by submitting himself to Hashem’s will, he unlocked the door of his own prison. Let us learn from Aharon HaKohen and from Yosef HaTzaddik to try to accept all of our life situations with emunah and thus merit not only equilibrium, but hopefully freedom from all pain and suffering as well.

Q&A

Question 1: In the middle of the seudah on Friday night, I accidentally removed the pot of cholent from the blech, thinking it was the soup. Am I allowed to put it back on the blech on Shabbos? Question 2: On Shabbos, the timer accidently shut off the blech. Is it muttar to put the cholent on my neighbor’s blech? Question 3: I put all the hot, fully cooked pots of food on the blech. On Shabbos, I realized the hot plate had not been switched on before Shabbos, but the food was still hot. What is the halacha? Halacha: In order to be allowed to replace a pot on the blech, the following five conditions must be met: 1. All parts of the cholent have to be fully cooked (i.e. potatoes, meat, bones, beans, barley) to a point where one considers it as totally edible according to his standards and those of the typical person in his town. 2. The food should be warmer than 99°F (when one dips one’s finger into the food, it should feel at least a little warm). [According to the Shitas HaTanya (‫)תניא‬, it should be about 160°F.] 3. When removing the pot from the blech, one had the intention of replacing it on the blech. 4. One did not put the pot down on the floor. The accepted opinion is that putting it on the counter is considered as if one put it down on the floor. 5. The fire must be grufah uktuma. The definition of grufa uktuma is, that the fire is covered, and the place where one controls the fires must be covered.. In today’s day in time, the above would include: • A stove whose fire and knobs are covered • An oven that is covered1 inside with silver foil and the outside

knobs are covered. • A crock pot or slow cooker whose knobs are covered • An electric Shabbos hot plate with no controls to raise or lower the temperature Answer 1: If one mistakenly took the pot off the blech and put it on the counter, it is still considered as if one had the intention of putting it back, since removing the pot was unintentional. Even though the pot was put down on the counter, one may return it to the blech as soon as one realizes one’s mistake, because of oneg Shabbos. This is on condition that: • The food has not dropped below room temperature. • It is one of the main courses of the Shabbos meal. • The dish was prepared for a special occasion (guests, simcha etc.). Answer 2: If the Shabbos timer caused the hot plate to turn off on Shabbos, it would not even be considered as having putting it down on the counter. Therefore, one may take the food over to somebody else’s blech without any limitations. Answer 3: On Shabbos, if one realizes that the fire/hot plate had never been turned on, one may turn a frying pan or pot upside-down (‫)קדירה הפוכה‬, and place it on somebody else’s blech. One may then put the cholent on the upside-down pot down which is on the blech. It is muttar to cover the pot with a towel (while ensuring that one side of the pot stays open so as not to be over on hatmana [insulating]). If this method will not work for a cholent to cook properly, the next option is relying on Reb S. Z. Aurbach’s zt”l psak, and putting it directly onto the blech. This is only muttar if it is the main course, for oneg Shabbos. These halachos pertain to Ashkenazim. Sefardim, according to the Bais Yosef, have different opinions.

An oven door may only be opened while the fire is on. One must bend down to check if the fire is on before opening the door and not just assume so.

Recap: Sara finds herself unable to connect with the women who moved to her neighborhood. Tzipoiry Eiss is planning an extravagant pool party in her backyard.

School was almost starting. Sara and Elimelech told Tehilla about her change of school and the girl threw a prolonged tantrum, the most terrific one she’d ever had. Sara patted her hair, gave her a tissue for her nose, and brought a cup of orange juice to her mouth even as she kicked and yelled — because Sara understood. She had fought with all her dignity for this change not to happen, knowing that a change of school for this girl was devastating. “I’m only going if Raizel Miriam comes as well,” Tehilla bargained. It was a feeble attempt. Raizel Miriam was the most popular girl in the class, a sweet-natured child who was good to everyone, including the Tehilla kind of soul, from a well-heeled family and no, she wasn’t going anywhere. When that piece of information was gently relayed to Tehilla, that she was the only girl in her class switching out, Tehilla responded as her mother expected. She screamed, cried, raged, bit her pillow, and vowed she wouldn’t go. Sara knew Tehilla meant that seriously, that once uttered, she rigidly kept her word. “We’ll buy you a new uniform,” Sara told her. “And really pretty new sweaters and supplies.” “I don’t want new sweaters. I want my old ones. I’m never giving up my favorite sweater.” Her old sweater, like her sisters, was embroidered with the beautiful — and now painful to look at — symbol emblem. “You’ll get that leather Kipling bag you wanted. You’re afraid of change, but it’ll be okay. I’ll tell you exactly what your first day will be like.” Sara outlined the day for Tehilla, from when the sun rose in the sky to dispel the bruised-colored darkness, until Tehilla came home to her favorite supper of spaghetti, meatballs, and string beanmango salad. As she listened to the details, the girl grew still, absorbed, and better equipped to handle a change that now felt more familiar. The briefcase, which Sara highlighted in her tale of Tehilla’s First Day of School helped convince the girl. Sunday was shopping day. There was

Tzipoiry Eiss, who spotted her on the pathway, came running over. “So, where should I put the pool?” “Oh, I was just about to go out. I’m shopping today. I’m sorry, I forgot.” “Not a problem. We can set it up while you’re gone. You’ll come back to a full pool. I’m gonna pull water from our own valve, so no worries.” No. Absolutely not. But… neighbors. Neighborliness. Sara stood, halfway turned to her car, wanting to leave, wanting to say no, not wanting to have a fullblown conversation of, “No, definitely no,” because, well, why not? She picked up both hands and said, “Whatever. Look, I’m only coming back at three. So I won’t even get to enjoy it.”

The girl threw a prolonged tantrum, the most terrific one she’d ever had. “Oh, so then us being here for sure won’t bother you,” Tzipoiry said excitedly. So this wasn’t about Sara at all, only about getting past her. Sara shrugged and headed to the car, her girls trailing behind her. “You’ll let them make a pool in our backyard?” Tehilla asked, alarmed. Rivky and Nechama were more enthusiastic. “Why not? Let them be there. We’re not there anyway.” They sensed their mother wasn’t altogether happy with her privacy being infringed upon by a woman who had neither time nor personal boundaries. Yet they were eager to please the new people and potential friends. The shopping trip was fruitful, expensive, and utterly exhausting. Sara found herself getting short with her girls for no good reason, when they were up to their third shoe store. Just the walking in between aisles, picking shoes up, suggesting them, bending down to feel the fit, and negotiating with the girls who always chose either the most absurd or flimsiest of shoes — her shoulders had a knot in them and she was tired. “We should eat something,” she finally suggested. They stopped into Chai Pizza but the place was

mobbed. Tehilla stood herself in front of a table where the occupants were already making a brachah achronah and secured the table for them. Sara had soup, which went down her exhausted self, warm and filling. The girls had pizza and they also ordered a sushi platter to share. It was two already; the boys were nearly home. “We still have some things to pick out but we’re all exhausted,” she told the girls when they were ready to bentch. “But my briefcase,” Tehilla protested. She was right. The briefcase was a big deal. Sara drove over to yet another store, feeling like her driving might be dangerous, so spent was she. The store was full of options, so this would be easy, Sara felt. Only it wasn’t. The girls kept changing their minds and debating the finer points of a rugged zipper versus an invisible one. “Get the strongest that’ll last the longest,” Sara said. “It’s guaranteed. For a lifetime, so we can get anyone we want,” the girls explained. They tried on bags in front of the mirror until Sara’s eyes were swimming. Finally, at the register, Sara shelled out several hours’ worth of work and herded the girls to the car. Rivky was about to run

There were balloons everywhere, like they’d sowed the garden with latex overnight. And plastic spoons and forks. back and change her mind but Sara told her, “Absolutely not.” They were to be happy with what they got. Rivky sulked, but Sara was too exhausted to care. And here she was, pulling up to her house. Only — the house looked different. The front yard looked as if a circus train had rolled through and left all of its happy-colored debris behind. There were wrappers everywhere. Everywhere. Freeze pops and Italian Ices and silver foil. And her backyard was swarming with people; one mother crouched in front of her flower bush with her children, yelling out instructions and hiding behind her oversized camera. “Come. Come join us,” Tzipoiry yelled from near the kiddie pool, where the swish, swish of water pouring over the nylon walls was heard loud and clear. “We decided to have a joint supper,” she said, her face flushed with a feverish grin. “We still have some hot dogs and bbq’d corn on the cob left over.” Tzipoiry rummaged through a box and held up a triumphant container of cole slaw. “Here. There’s enough for your entire family.” There were balloons everywhere, like they’d sowed the

And women who didn’t even turn around when she came into her backyard, as if it were their playground and she was trespassing. “I never gave permission,” she started saying, but her voice was swallowed up by Tzipoiry, screaming at her toddler not to cross the street, and Sara was thankful, because she didn’t want to be the mean neighbor, but didn’t they themselves understand that this was a terrible infringement? She’d better go inside and calm down, Sara knew, even as the voices of chatting mothers and gleeful children and the occasional “come here” or “don’t do that” would make their way into her home. Now with the glorious summer days ahead and the less hectic schedule, it’s the perfect time to buckle down and focus on eating good food that is good-for-you, too! For the next three weeks I’ll be sharing with you fresh, fast, and delicious recipes that are waist-friendly as well. All the recipes have serving sizes and calorie counters included. The recipes are simple, filling, and don’t compromise on taste. This week we’re starting with three hearty breakfast choices. There’s something here for everyone. Try them; you’ll be glad you did!

Low-Fat Yogurt Pancakes Sometimes you’re in the mood of a hearty, filling breakfast – this is it! The yogurt adds great taste and texture; you can actually play around with different flavors of yogurt. Don’t try Greek yogurt, though, because it is too thick and won’t work for this recipe.

Ingredients: 1 cup flour 1 cup low-fat vanilla yogurt 1 egg ¼ teaspoon baking soda 1 tablespoon oil Fresh fruit, for serving

Directions: 1. In a medium bowl, beat the egg. Add in the yogurt and mix. Add baking soda and flour. Mix until just combined and let stand for five minutes. 2. Heat the oil in a non-stick frying pan. Drop ¼ cup of pancake batter at a time into the pan. 3. Wait until bubbles form around edges and then flip over for an additional two minutes. Serve with fresh fruit.

Hearty Vegetable Frittata This frittata is chock-full of sautéed vegetables and cheesy goodness in every bite. Next to a slice of whole wheat bread, you have yourself a good and good-for-you breakfast.

Ingredients: 2 tablespoons oil, divided 2 cloves garlic, minced 4 ½ cups sliced assorted fresh vegetables (zucchini, onions and red peppers) 1 teaspoon oregano 8 eggs 3 tablespoons water 1 cup low fat shredded mozzarella cheese, divided

Directions: 1. Heat 1 tablespoon oil in a large frying pan. Add garlic, vegetables, and oregano. Stir occasionally until vegetables are soft and wilted, about 10 minutes. 2. Meanwhile, in a large bowl, mix 1 tablespoon oil, 3 tablespoons water and eggs. Whisk until foamy. Stir in ½ cup shredded cheese into egg mixture. 3. Reduce heat in frying pan to low and stir in egg mixture over sautéed vegetables. After a few minutes, lift edges of frittata with a spatula, letting uncooked egg mixture flow to the bottom. Cook until almost set. Top with remaining ½ cup shredded cheese. Cover pan with foil and cook on low flame until cheese on top is melted and eggs are completely set. Note: This serves 6 people. Since summer is one of the biggest buying seasons for cars, it could be the right time to get a new car before hitting the road. Auto dealerships begin rolling out their new models and discounting the outgoing year’s inventory, making it a good opportunity to land a deal at significantly lower prices. So, hop over to your local car dealer and just… what? Buy a car? Lease a car? New? Used? The possibilities are as endless as the roads ahead. LEASING A CAR VS. BUYING A CAR: Do I lease or buy? As experienced dealers in both leasing and selling cars, we get this question very often. Here are some points that should help you decide what’ll work best for you. How long do you plan to drive the same car? Leasing lets drivers switch cars frequently. Since the typical lease is two to three years, drivers get a new car whenever the lease expires. The biggest incentive for many people who decide

to lease is that you can drive a brand-new, well-priced and better equipped vehicle with updated 2016 technology and features, more than you might be able to get when you buy. Leasing a new car also gives you the comfort of not having to spend any time at the mechanic. With a 2-year lease, you generally don’t even have to change the brakes and tires if you rotate them the way you should. However, leases require you to take good care of your car. If you’re the type to scrape parking ga-

rage pillars or scratch wheels on a curb, leasing probably isn’t the right choice for you. At the end of the lease, you’ll be required to fix everything and you might get hit with substantial charges. In that case, buying would be a more cost-effective choice. You also need a good credit score to be approved for a bank loan; the better your score the lower your rates will be. If this is the first time you are leasing a car and your credit scores are neither good nor bad, there are some banks that your car dealer can work with to get you a good deal (depending on the car you’re interested in and your current income status). What should I know about

insurance before leasing a car? If it’s the first time you are leasing, especially if you are a young driver (under 25) you will be best off shopping for good insurance quotes at the same time you are looking for your car, since they can be quite steep. Your car dealer will usually help you navigate the system. Is someone else, other than the leaser, allowed to drive the car? Yes, it is not like a rented car. However, if a different person is the official driver, you might run into trouble with your insurance company.

What are my options if I need to terminate my lease before it

Are damage waivers worth it? Definitely! You still need to be

careful, though, because not everything will be covered by the waiver. Always have your car inspected with enough time allowance before the term’s maturity date to allow room for unexpected results to be taken care of. At Deals on Wheels, we handle the inspection for our customers. It’s important to ask your dealer before you sign up for a lease exactly how the lease end

process and fees work at their company. Before returning a car, what are some things that I should know (hidden fees, should I fix anything myself…)? As we mentioned, make sure to inspect your vehicle ahead of time to know what would be worth fixing yourself. Company fees are generally greater than

body shop fees. Also, There is a fee called the “disposition fee” that most companies (besides Ford) charge when you return the car, unless you stay with their company. This is important to consider when you want to switch mid- or end- term to a deal that’ll save you five or ten dollars monthly, but will cost you more with the disposition fee.

Consider the following comparisons to decide if a new or used vehicle is best for you. Known as the most complicated interchange in the country, this Los Angeles Interchange can leave one dizzy. 5 The Guoliang Tunnel: Yes, that is a mountain. And yes, there is a tunnel hewn into it. LET’S GO RIDE A BIKE Should I let you in on my deep, dark secret? Okay, here I go. DEEP BREATH. I don’t know how to ride a bike. So I actually took some time now to figure out this bike business. Wherein lies my problem? Researching for this article, I’ve come to the realization that as I was growing up, I shied away from physical activity; I preferred to read a book. Although I’m not alone in my ungainliness, knowing when to worry can be tricky. Up to six percent of school-aged children have trouble with the motor skills required for many tasks, from getting dressed to riding a bike and climbing stairs. After all, who hasn’t seen a toddler bump into the wall or a preschooler struggle to tie her shoes? Clumsiness when children are young, or trying out a new skill, is very normal because they’re just finding their way around. Some children simply take a little longer to learn certain skills. Others just aren’t as athletically inclined as their friends. But when they have difficulty and get frustrated performing motor activities that are age appropriate, even if they’re motivated and have adequate opportunity to practice, concerned parents should give Wellspring a call. “When we start to learn something new, we have to pay attention to exactly where our body is,” says an occupational therapist. “We get the feel of the movement very quickly. It’s like we’re making a blueprint.” That’s why so many children have difficulty learning to ride a bicycle. “They have to think about pushing their foot down every

time they pedal, which makes it harder to focus on steering,” she says. I know that feeling well. When I’m trying to master a dance step or learn how to jump rope, my brain is so busy focusing on the direction and the action, that I fumble and feel like a klutz. Many kids with coordination challenges reach their very early motor milestones on track. They sit up, walk, and may run within normal limits. It’s not until they hit age two or three, when they’re expected to begin using their hands and feet in a coordinated manner, that they begin to stand out from their peers. At the dinner table, they spill their milk and can’t cut their meat. In class, they might use their arms to prop their head up on the desk. They also tend to shy away from team sports. (Which I can totally relate to; I never played Machanayim or jumped rope with my neighbors.) Boys in particular can be made fun of and sidelined by their peers. Wellspring’s physical therapists don’t only help children gain motor skills; they enable children to keep up with their peers socially.

WHAT ARE SOME COORDINATION MILESTONES NEEDED, ESPECIALLY FOR BIKE RIDING? To ride on two wheels, along with wanting to try, chil-

dren should be able to: • stand on one foot for ten seconds, which indicates good core stability • skip and gallop, which indicates that a child has the ability to easily shift her weight from one side to the other • perform coordinated tasks with the lower body — for example, kicking a ball with alternate feet while running

WHAT ARE APPROPRIATE BIKES FOR YOUNG CHILDREN?

It wasn’t a fair trade: the lumber and asphalt of the multi-unit condominiums in exchange for the flora and fauna of Monsey. Still, the country bumpkin in us prevails, and trees and shrubs are now planted in thimbles. Gardening and beautifying our homes has always infused us with verve, and we have all learned to grow fond of nature. Most of us relish a break from the rush of our daily lives. We enjoy the beauty and serenity of being in a natural setting. We don’t have to be tree huggers to sense that nature is good for us. The myriad mental and physical health benefits derived from being enveloped by trees doesn’t mandate us living amidst the deep, dark forest. Research shows that even five minutes around trees or in green spaces may improve health. Think of it as a prescription, with no negative side effects, that’s also free! How would preserving the trees in our neighborhoods make us healthier? Detrimental to our health and to the wellbeing of our children is the alarming number of trees being axed in our community. Houses must be built to provide for our flourishing new neighborhoods, yet that mustn’t stop us from preserving our plant life… The streets of Monsey used to be lined with many trees. Once winter’s majesty faded, it was hard to miss the pearly sprigs forming a fragrant canopy over the lanes, and the leaves’ fiery hues come autumn. Yet trees aren’t merely planted to ornament our neighborhoods. Pollution is real, especially when it’s trapped under a thick layer of carbon dioxide. The oaks, the pines, the stately maples, and many others penetrate this CO2 “bubble” by ingesting this greenhouse gas (CO2),

and exhaling fresh oxygen, thereby purifying the air we breathe, plus the environment at large. More trees equal more carbon dioxide processed into oxygen, saving our Monsey environment for future generations. Bike riding: a right of childhood. There’s so much excitement in learning how to ride on one’s own bike, together with the thrill of the wind on one’s face and the exhilaration of pedaling furiously, just for the sake of it. But along with learning how to balance on a bike, which once learned is never forgotten, comes learning and reviewing the rules that are an integral part of riding a bike safely in order to prevent the more than the

half million bike-related accidents seen in emergency rooms annually. Given that nearly sixty percent of these accidents involve children ages fifteen and younger, teaching bike safety, reviewing it, and making sure it’s put into practice is clearly an integral part of keeping children safe. At the start of each summer riding season, review the basic rules to remind children to exercise bike safety at all times.

Make sure to wear a helmet, as head injuries account for 63% of bike fatalities • Helmets should fit securely and not obstruct vision. • Even a child riding with training wheels should wear a helmet.

Avoid bike riding in the early evening. If this is not possible: • Install a headlight visible for 500 feet, wear a reflector, and make sure the bike has rear reflectors.

Wear shoes that grip pedals. This will aid in avoiding accidents which occur because of riders wearing sandals or other shoes that may be hazardous.

Regularly make certain the bike is in good riding condition. • Check the bike’s chain and that the tires are full, that the seat is not loose, and that the handlebars are lined up correctly. • If the bike has training wheels, check that they are in good shape and mounted properly. • Check that the bike helmet is in good shape and fits well.

Make sure the bike is the right height for the rider. Riding a bike that is too tall creates safety issues if the rider cannot sit properly on the seat nor reach the ground.

Teaching bike safety, reviewing it, and making sure it’s put into practice is clearly an integral part of keeping children safe.

Be aware of your child’s route and the time it takes to cover it. If your child is going to be riding a bike to and from school, practice the route before the start of school and go over any possible danger spots there might be.

Have your child’s bike registered with the police. Monsey’s annual Chaverim Bike Registration Day at Viola Park is the perfect opportunity for this. Having a unique serial number engraved on the frame of the bike is a good way to aid in the recovery of a bike should it ever be stolen. It also serves to show your child that you value his bike enough to register it, because it’s an important piece of property — and this will hopefully translate into it being important for him, too.

If your child is riding a bike to a neighbor, require a phone call once the child arrives. Better yet, have the mother remind him to call you, and do the same when her child comes to you, as children are apt to forget, and why spend the few minutes worrying when you don’t have to? If he thinks he’s too big to call to report in, all it will take is one phone call that you make to the friend’s house before he realizes that it’s a whole lot less embarrassing to just call home to say he got there then to have his mother call to check if he’s there or not.

Be sure your older child knows to ride with traffic and knows to obey all traffic laws like stop lights, stop signs, and yielding to pedestrians. Younger children, of course, should never ride on the street.

Remind your child not to stop and talk to strangers even while on their bike.

Reviewing and implementing the above rules at the beginning of every new bike-riding season will help to keep bike riding the safe, pleasurable experience it is meant to be for everyone involved.

THE GOOD AND THE BAD Clearly, there are two viewpoints on this topic: that of the cardholder contemplating adding an authorized user and that of the individual seeking authorized-user status. Essentially, you could divide these points as the Pros and the Cons. But in all honesty, there are good and bad effects for both the primary and the authorized user, as you can see here:

1. For the Primary Account Holder – the Cons:

Legal responsibility: As the owner of the account, you are liable for any charges on the card. This includes those made by your authorized user. Impact on your Credit Score: Any activity on your “shared” credit card account impacts the credit scores of both you and your authorized user. Therefore, if your authorized user behaves irresponsibly and you are unable to stay current on your bill due to this, your credit will suffer along with his. Additionally, running up a large balance damages your FICO score as well, increasing your utilization rate. Personal relationship issues: Money issues have destroyed many a relationship, be they with family members or friends. Keep this in mind when contemplating adding an authorized user to a credit card. If things go wrong, the ensuing fallout may ruin your relationship.

2. For the Primary Account Holder – the Pros

Control: As the primary cardholder, you maintain control of your account. You can limit the card usage of the AU, and even have her removed from your account if and when you choose. As a matter of fact, you don’t even have to provide your AU with a card. You can make her an AU “in name only” and allow her to do no more than merely reap the benefits of your good card credit history.

CITY OF ANGELS Two am: Definitely not a time that you want to be stuck in a strange city with no one to call, no form of transportation, and nowhere to even sit down. Multiply that many times over when you consider that the city you’re in is known for its masses of unsavory elements. Our stayover in Los Angeles was only meant for a few hours as a place to catch up on a bit of shut-eye before continuing towards Palm Springs where my husband had business to take of. And yet, here I was, flanked on either side by hundreds of cars in all shades of the rainbow, looking over my shoulder repeatedly, wondering what was taking my husband so long to procure our rental car. Surrounded by mounds of suitcases, crates of frozen food, and boxes of headgear, I was left standing in the middle of a Los Angeles car rental lot to “protect” our belongings. Heh. Me. Holding down the fort. One tired, heimishe lady in the middle of thug-infested territory. Shudder. What is taking him so long? I wondered to myself, realizing that if anybody actually did appear and decided to dance away with my husband’s shtreimel box I’d go shrieking in the other direction. From my vantage point I could see into the glass windows where my husband was gesticulating wildly, clearly irked. Sighing, I spun around in circles, scoping out the landscape, you know, just in case. Nuch a mazel for the bright lights, I thought to myself, appreciating the natural thug-deterrent. The minutes continued ticking by, and aside from frequently glancing outside to ascertain that I was safe, no news was forthcoming from the husband on the other side of the glass barrier. Finally, more than hour later, he finally

walked outside, looking rather dejected. “I’m sorry,” he said, “They refuse to rent me a car. I tried everything. Even shochad…” “What?” I gasped, shocked beyond belief. “But we booked it, all the way back home in New York!” “I know. I guess the booking agent didn’t know what he was talking about.” He shrugged, “It seems I’m underage. They refuse to give me the car.” Shoulders sagging, we had no clue what our next step was. We’d arrived in Los Angeles without knowing a soul, counting on the hospitality of strangers who’d

volunteered to host us for that leg of our journey. We’d made up with them that we’d arrive quietly, let ourselves in, sleep a few hours, and then be on our way. Now, however, we had no way to get there! And even if we’d consider waking them up, I hadn’t saved their number! My husband decided to return to the car rental booth and ask the man for a taxi’s phone number, but the agent had mysteriously vanished, and locked the door behind him. Oh. Well. Now what? Boruch Hashem we’d brought along a cell phone and my husband began dialing contacts back in New York — the hour there even more unearthly than the time zone we were in. Finally, we found someone who blearily answered the phone and happened to know a g’vir in Los Angeles. Lucky for us, that person also had the guts to call him up at that hour — despite our half-hearted protests that we’d manage to survive the night in the parking lot. A short while later a car pulled up, driven by a Jewish man with a big smile; the private chauffeur of the previously mentioned g’vir. We were amazed. Mi k’amcha Yisroel! Such chesed! At such an hour! On the behalf of perfect strangers! My husband schmoozed with the driver all the way to the host’s house where we’d be staying. We planned to

sneak in ever-so-silently, but once again, had a surprise when we found that lady of the house was waiting for us, a full spread laid out in our honor. There were purple pears in crystal serving dishes with fragrant cinnamon sticks, hot tea of various flavors, cold drinks, and other platters piled high with baked goods. With tears in our eyes, we shooed her off to bed, our gratitude knowing no bounds. While I can’t say that we slept much that night, with the hours few and the morning sun dawning bright, I can say that the chesed of the LA community added an extra bounce to our overtired steps the next day. I guess there is a reason they call Los Angeles “The City of Angels.” Oh, and after several hours of haggling the next morning, my husband was finally awarded the keys to a brand new, luxury PT Cruiser — a free upgrade for the hassle we’d gone through. It was off to Palm Springs in style!

Watching Chaim from the sidelines while playing with his siblings, even close family and friends missed the signs of him being “special.” Yes, from the outside Chaim may sometimes seem to be walking the walk and talking the talk just like everyone around him. Shy, okay, but pretty “normal” — as all like to call it. Yet, all it takes is a knowing eye and a closer look to realize just how far that proves to be from the truth. In a world where social cues are thrown around freely and street smarts are our society’s lifesaver in staying afloat, Chaim owns none of that. Whereas his counterparts take humor in stride, pick up when they may be teased, and can stand up for themselves in given situations, Chaim is instead faced with transitioning difficulty, focusing issues, obsessive and compulsive behavior, processing disorders, and sometimes very unusual movements — all of which prevent him from really “feeling” his surroundings and reading facial expressions, thus putting him into a very vulnerable position. Chaim’s yeshiva life consisted of sitting in his seat with his head down, since the social part of the classroom (which was made up of only eight boys), still overpowered his ability to concentrate on anything being taught. The fact that his IQ was higher than any of his classmates’ failed to improve the status quo in any way. Then came recess time... While the rest of the yeshiva building excitedly emptied its contents to the playground outside, our son’s seat was always occupied with an anxiety-stricken, sensory-overloaded child who had not the slightest clue as to what it took to join a circle — knowing it would require too much of him to say all the right things in the right time to the right people; something that is simply a given to a typically developing child his age. Then, to add insult to injury, there would

Innocently enough, his Rebbeim had no idea why our son would suddenly start crying hysterically when they decided to give some cherished moments of free play instead of the usual Chumash lesson. That was two years ago. It ended when our son began tantruming when we tried putting him on to the bus in the morning. In the beginning we were just hoping it was a passing phase and so, we fell into a little routine of us carrying a kicking and screaming five-year-old onto the bus and quickly running off just as the bus driver would slam the door, thus preventing him from getting off. But that didn’t end quite there. He refused to get off the bus when it had arrived at its intended destination and then fell into a fit of hysterics that lasted until he got home in the afternoon. That month saw us signing our last tuition check. Chaim breathed a huge sigh of relief, while as parents, our search had just begun. We wanted what would be best for him and couldn’t bear to see him suffer any longer... A “special” school it would be. Or so we hoped... Again our son stuck out like a sore thumb. He was “way” too normal for the mentally and behaviorally challenged children whose company he suddenly found himself in. His yarmulke kept being targeted at close range, and then thrown to the other end of the classroom. If our son hadn’t had enough anxiety until this point, he was in for a triple serving, with a generous helping for dessert. We were at a loss again. It seemed our son was too

abnormal, yet too normal at the same time. Special or not? He hit it right at the fine line and there was nothing catering to that fine line. Nothing. Suddenly, reality hit. We were all alone with a child that fit nowhere —a lone puzzle piece from a non-existent puzzle. Grief quickly turned to mourning. Mourning for the future of our precious Chaim. For his gentle soul and spirit. For the child that he is. For the adult he will never be. But then, just as our last seed of hope was digging a grave deeper and deeper in the darkness, the seed reached the point of germination, cracked in the depths of the black soil below, and a new life emerged. A stunning realization set in. Chaim may be different than anyone else. He may seem like the painting that doesn’t fit the frame. But that is because Chaim was born with a very unique mission to fill. A mission that we suddenly felt very much the desire to take part in. Now, as the children scramble to open the door for our beloved Morah Chava, for our amazing Rebbe, every time I eavesdrop on the beautiful lessons so lovingly prepared, each time I go through his glowing reports, reviewing the great strides he’s made... In my heart of hearts I doubt no more. Instead I know, I am fortunate to have been blessed with a son as special as Chaim. There’s nothing more frustrating than falling in love with a home and then discovering you can’t afford to buy it. Consulting with a mortgage lender is the first step you should undertake in the home-buying process. Almost all first-time buyers need a mortgage to finance their home purchase, so get prepared before you look. When you’re armed with the knowledge of what you can afford, it focuses your search and allows you to make a move when you find a home you love.

WHAT IS A MORTGAGE PRE-APPROVAL? Lenders offer borrowers either a pre-qualification letter or a pre-approval letter, but most real estate agents recommend you get a pre-approval letter before you start home shopping. A pre-qualification letter states the amount a lender thinks you’ll be able to borrow based on your income and credit profile without any actual documentation. However, mortgage lending standards have tightened since the housing crisis, and all mortgage loans now require full documentation and verification of income and assets — so most sellers will only accept an offer from a buyer with a full pre-approval letter based on verified information.
