I would like to applaud you for a very successful, interesting, and helpful magazine. What I like especially is the “Keep Our Town Clean” project. What a clever way to get the entire community involved in changing Monsey for the better! I am very thankful. I was thinking though, that on the list you published of things not to recycle it says we cannot recycle wax-coated paper or cardboard; that means these items cannot go into the blue recycling bins. Then, on the advertisement that was right across the page, there is a wax-coated paper ice cream container shown going into the blue recycling bin. This seems like a mistake, and we need to let people know their bins should be used for recycling things that will be accepted.

I just wanted to let you know that I had been to Lancaster a couple of years ago, and I had an opportunity to go again, this time armed with your Excursions booklet. I couldn’t get over the accuracy of every little detail, and I had such an easy time planning the itinerary, which included places I did not know of when I went the first time. I’ve also visited a number of other attractions you featured, and each time I marveled at how accurate your descriptions were.

EDITOR’S BULLETIN The Monsey View was contacted by locals concerned about the safety of salmon fish, and by local fish stores concerned about sales. We requested Esther Apter, Doctor of Alternative Medicine to address the topic more in-depth to give our readers a better scope of the issue. Here is her reply: The main health hazard discussed in my article was the concern of pesticides (poisons against worms and fish parasites) intoxicating the salmon. The drugs and antibiotics that many farms feed the fish with might be authorized, but that doesn’t mean we want to consume all of that. Smoking is legal and so is red #40… It should be said however, that Norway is vast, with multiple fish farms on its fjords. There are various methods in raising fish, and although it seems that there are farms that farm in other, safer manners, the majority of these farms fall into the chemical-use category, leaving salmon full of toxins. Again, not all salmon is farmed this way, though it is quite prevalent. It would be wise to investigate the source of your salmon by speaking to your local fish store proprietor and obtaining the information about where and how the fish are raised. My seventeen-year-old with Down syndrome wanted to take swimming lessons. She has low tone and I felt it might be a waste of money. I spoke to her physical therapist who thought it couldn’t hurt. I also spoke with the person who would give her the swim lessons. She couldn’t guarantee that my daughter would learn to swim since every child is different. I decided to go through with it, but I was still feeling hesitant. I try to go swimming each day at the same time. The day after these conversations, I was running late for swimming. As a result, the children with special needs that usually come when I leave were at the swimming pool the same time as me. Two of the girls had Down syndrome, so I kept my eye on them. One held on to the edge of the pool and was kicking. The other took a noodle and swam with it. I realized as a result of seeing them happily do their own thing that I needed to change my expectations from my daughter learning to swim like me, to her being able to swim according to her ability.

Rebalancing Your Leptin Levels As I mentioned in my last article, sleep is the number one step in reestablishing healthy leptin levels. So, today I want to discuss the second step, which is one of the most important components of your weight-loss journey: Stop eating two or three hours before you go to sleep at night. Eating before bed gives your body immediate fuel that can be used as energy — the only problem is that you don’t need energy at this point. The food that is not used for your standard bodily functions (remember that our bodies are still active when we sleep) will be digested and eventually stored as extra fat, even though the body simply wants to be resting! On the other hand, not eating in the two or three hours before bed allows your body’s natural sleeping metabolism to help you burn fat. Sleeping is the perfect time to give your body a rest from food. After all, your body needs to digest what you’ve eaten earlier in the day, so eating extra food late at night won’t help you any. Many people believe that it’s best not to eat anything after six o’clock at night, while some say after seven or eight. I agree with this if you go to sleep at ten, which is ideal. Now, if you’re still working on going to bed in a timely manner, and instead of retiring at 2 o’clock in the morning you go to sleep at twelve, that is indeed progress. If you’re a night owl, it will take you quite a bit of time to adhere to earlier sleeping patterns, but if you make a conscious effort to do so, you will. So, for those of you who go to sleep around 10, it’s good to stop eating at seven. But for those of you who go to bed at

one or two o’clock in the morning, then simply stop eating two or three hours before you call it a night. If you eat dinner at seven, you can have a bedtime snack at 10 and go to sleep at one. If you decide not to eat anything after seven and you go to bed at one, that might be a huge challenge for you. You can do it, but it’s okay to have a bedtime snack a few hours before you go to sleep if you feel you need extra fuel. Again, the top choice would be to eat dinner at around seven and go to sleep at 10. Not only will your leptin levels change, but you will lose weight and wake up feeling exhilarated and ready to start your day. Instead of feeling lethargic, you’ll have given your body a good night’s sleep to regenerate. Eating right before going to sleep can have negative effects on your sleep quality. 1. It can make you feel bloated. 2. It can cause acid reflux. 3. Your body will store the energy from the food as fat. 4. It can cause poor digestion.

less time) to get your body used to not eating in the two or three hours before you go to sleep. The beginning might be a challenge, but make a conscious effort, and after a while you will establish a routine where you won’t need any food before bed. I highly suggest not going to sleep hungry! It may take some time for you to realize the difference between hunger and cravings; for hunger, your only option is to eat, but there are other productive ways to deal with cravings. Normal hunger ends when you eat (of course, it depends on the type of food you choose), but cravings and “eating your feelings,” so to speak, have nothing to do with food. That’s

why people can eat a whole apple pie and not even feel full! If you know you will have to be up late, or if something really “important” comes up and you will go to sleep later than usual, here are a few snacks for when you get hungry at night. Choose one or two of the following: • 22 nuts • Almond or peanut butter on a celery stick • One cup of popcorn • Half an apple with 10 nuts • One stick of string cheese • Two or three thin slices of turkey • Tea with one piece of dark chocolate

Aviva finally settled her baby down long enough to be able to say Birchas HaShachar before getting her older children out the door to cheder, school, and playgroup. When she came to the words, “V’hi ratzon milfanecha… shetargileinu b’Sorasecha,” Aviva paused. Engage me in Your Torah? I used to daven Shacharis and Mincha every day as a girl, she reflected, and say Tehillim as well. But now I’m barely able to squeeze in these few brachos… Avigdor hurried to catch the early minyan so he could be on time to make the bus that took him to his job in Manhattan. When he came to the words, “Vihi ratzon milfanecha… shetargileinu b’Sorasecha,” Avigdor paused. Torah used to be my whole life, he reflected, remembering his kollel days with great nostalgia. I still have my night shiur, but it can’t be compared to learning full time. And going into Manhattan every day is such a danger to my neshama, he reflected. The billboards alone make the commute a spiritual minefield. Avigdor continued to daven, having in mind that Hashem should please help him not to succumb to the moral dangers he would inevitably encounter throughout the day. This week’s Parsha begins, “V’yadabeir Hashem el Moshe leimor, ‘Shelach l’cha anashim…’ – And Hashem spoke to Moshe, saying, ‘Send for yourself men

and let them spy out the land of C’naan…’” (Bamidbar 13:1-2) The Sfas Emes, in his first maamar on Parshas Shelach from the year 5631, raises a good question. We know that it was Klal Yisroel who asked to spy out the land in the first place, and that Hashem had not been pleased with this suggestion because the request had been made with impure mo-

And yet, Hashem not only permitted them to send spies, but He even commanded them to do, as indicated by the word “leimor” in this pasuk. One might wonder why Hashem would actually command people to do something that had been their own idea, and which He knew to be rooted in rebelliousness. The Sfas Emes answers that by commanding Klal Yisroel to send the m’raglim, Hashem was, in fact, giving them an opportunity to save themselves from their own mistake. By turning their request into His own command, Hashem transformed their plan into a true mitzvah and thus gave the m’raglim the opportunity to go

forth as shlichei mitzvah, who we know merit special protection. It says in the midrash (Bamidbar Rabbah 16:1), “There is nothing so precious to Hashem as a sh’liach mitzvah.” The Sfas Emes explains that a true sh’liach mitzvah gives away his nefesh for his shlichus. He places Hashem’s will above his own in all his actions. Although spying out the land had been their own idea, if the m’raglim would have gone forth with the intention of being shlichei mitzvah – nullifying their own will completely and suppressing their personal desires – then they would have been saved as true shlichei mitzvah. The Sfas Emes takes this idea further, applying it to every person. He quotes his zaide, the Chiddushei HaRim, that every person who is m’kayeim the mitzvos of his Creator – which is what we were sent to this world to do in the first place – seeking only to fulfill the will of Hashem all the days of his life, is continuously considered to be a shliach mitzvah and thus merits constant protection. If a person nullifies his own will entirely, not even seeking to be zocheh to madregos such as closeness to Hashem, but always and only seeking to do the will of Hashem, then it means that he has true m’siras nefesh for his shlichus. However, if he attaches his own will to any of his actions – even mitzvos – then he is not a

true shliach mitzvah and does not merit that special protection. The Sfas Emes further explains that the above midrash goes on to say that the shluchim who were later sent by Yehoshua gave themselves away completely for their shlichus. They made themselves like potters who create vessels of clay, which brings no chashivus. Because they knew they would be entering a place of grave moral danger, they understood that making themselves into true shluchei mitzvah was the only way they could merit Hashem’s complete protection. The Sfas Emes explains that this midrash should serve as our model for life in this world. A shaliach is a person who is sent to do a mitzvah. We were sent into a world of moral danger and immorality, and the key to total protection is to make ourselves shluchei mitzvah - to see ourselves as people who were sent to this world to do mitzvos. However, to be true shlichei mitzvah, we must nullify our own desires and do ever action - from “ordinary” activities to mitzvos - only and completely to carry out Hashem’s will. This is why we say in davening every day, “shetargileinu b’Sorasecha” – the words at which Aviva and Avigdor in the above stories both paused to reflect. Normally, we understand this bracha to mean that we should seek to only do actions involving the Torah – i.e., we should try to spend more time learning or davening, or engaging in “official” mitzvos such as bikur cholim. The Sfas Emes is bringing out the opposite message from this bracha: whatever our action may be – whether it is to sit and learn or to commute to Manhattan for work, like Avigdor, or whether it is to daven a full Shacharis or to care for young children, like Aviva – we can infuse every action (shetargileinu) with Torah (b’Sorasecha) by having the kavanah to carry out Hashem’s will. Avigdor should keep in mind that supporting his family is Hashem’s will for him, and Aviva should keep in mind that caring for her children is Hashem’s will for her. By living our lives this way, we make ourselves into shluchei mitzvah and thus merit Hashem’s special protection throughout our days, whether from our own yetzer hara or from the billboards of Manhattan.

Is it muttar on Erev Shabbos to put mail in the mailbox and raise the flag to indicate it’s ready to be picked up and the mail will be picked up on Shabbos or Yom Tov?

It’s muttar.

There are two halachic Issues involved: Issue #1. Melachas Akum on Shabbos (‫)מלאכת עכו”ם‬ There are two types of issurim regarding melachas akum on Shabbos. 1. Chazal prohibited asking a non-Jew to perform a melacha on Shabbos, even if one won’t have any benefit from the performed melacha. This prohibition includes asking the non-Jew directly or even hinting for the non-Jew to perform a forbidden melacha on Shabbos. It is assur to even hint with one’s finger. (This issur also applies to melochos d’rabbanan.) In case of (monetary) loss, or l’tzorech gadol — great need (‫הפסד‬ ‫)או לצורך גדול‬, it is permitted to hint to a non-Jew to perform a melacha. But that hint should not be given as a command (‫)דרך ציוו‬. • “Derech tzivuy,” a hint with a direct request, is assur. For example, if the light in the bedroom is on, to tell a nonJew, “Why didn’t you turn off the light before I went to sleep last time when the light was on on Shabbos?” This is a type of hint with a direct request to turn the light off. This is assur. • A hint shelo b’derech tzivuy (without a direct request) is muttar. For example, “The light in the room is on. I cannot sleep with the light on.

We Jews are forbidden to turn the light off on Shabbos.” Or, “The air conditioner is on. It’s a waste of money…” This type of hint without a command is muttar. All the of following are assur: • To ask a non-Jew on Erev Shabbos to perform a melacha on Shabbos. • To ask a non-Jew on Shabbos to perform a melacha after Shabbos. • To ask a non-Jew on Shabbos that he should ask another non-Jew to-do a melacha on Shabbos. 2. Chazal prohibited having benefit (‫ )הנאה‬from a melacha performed for a Jew, by a non-Jew on Shabbos — even if the non-Jew performed it without being asked to do so. Benefiting from the act performed on Shabbos is even prohibited even on Motzei Shabbos for the amount of time it took the non-Jew to do the melacha. When one sees a non-Jew performing a melacha on Shabbos for him, one should try to prevent him from doing so. The following are some cases that Chazal permitted benefiting from melachas akum on Shabbos, and even allow asking the nonJew to perform that melacha on Shabbos: • When the melacha is done for the non-Jew himself, or for himself and a Yid, or for

a choleh who is together with a non-choleh • If one was able to have the hanoah before the non-Jew performed the melocha; for example, it is light in the room and the non-Jew switched on the light without asking anyone, thereby making reading easier, one is allowed to have hanoah from the extra light. (This concept is considered ‫תוספות אור‬.) • If the non-Jew is able to perform a melacha b’derech heter (in a permitted manner), but for a non-Jew’s own convenience performs that melacha b’derech issur (in a non-permitted manner), this is muttar l’chatchila. Example: A non-Jew is allowed to wash dishes with warm water for her own benefit; that is allowed, because, according to the Jew, she could wash it with cold water, though she’d have to work harder. • There are certain other circumstances where Chazal allowed a Yid to ask a non-Jew to perform a melacha on Shabbos, and for a Yid to be permitted to have benefit on Shabbos from that

melacha. These include any of the following: • ‫( לצורך גדול מאוד‬In dire situations) • ‫( לצורך מצוה‬For the needs of a mitzvah) • ‫( לצורך חולה‬For the needs of a sick person) • ‫( לצורך רבים‬For the needs of the community) • In each of the above situations one must ask a shailah.

Now with regards to putting mail out on Erev Shabbos in one’s own private mailbox, there is the second issue of maares eyin. (‫מראית‬ ‫)עין‬

So, it is allowed to put mail in a public mailbox (for example, the post office) close to the onset of Shabbos. The main reason for this heter is that leading poskim are of the opinion that although on Shabbos itself it is assur to ask one non-Jew to ask a second non-Jew to perform a melacha on Shabbos, this is allowed on Erev Shabbos. Putting mail in a public mailbox on Erev Shabbos falls under that category, because one doesn’t request in any way of the mailman to have the mail picked up, he does this because his boss instructs him to do so. • On Shabbos itself, it is not allowed to put even a non-mukt-

Ma’ares Eyin Chazal prohibited allowing a non-Jew on Shabbos to remove even the non-Jew’s own belongings (that he just got from the Yid before Shabbos) out of the Yid’s property, because of ‫מראית עין‬, [one might suspect that they’ve conducted business dealings on Shabbos.] But with regards to mail, it is common knowledge that the mail is picked up and delivered daily, so there is no ‫ מראית עין‬involved when the mailman removes the mail. But, as written above, on Shabbos itself, it is assur to put mail in any mailbox. (Because in Shabbos itself even to ask one non-Jew to ask another non-Jew is assur.)

Life with Chaim is like a dance that keeps changing rhythms. What may start off as a steady rhumba, can quickly turn into a wild jazz which can leave you reeling with dizziness, long after it has settled into a waltz. Homeschooling him can sometimes feel like never having the opportunity to shut the music. What it involves is many an unexpected meltdown episode. 8:00 AM. It is a peaceful morning as I distribute snacks into the waiting schoolbags, while the children are all busy getting dressed in their respective bedrooms. But peaceful it is not for too long. Suddenly, there is a loud crash followed by angry shouts. As I make my way upstairs, I catch a glimpse of a single eye materializing through the crack in each bedroom door, all motioning me in one direction. Chaim is at it again, no doubt. The question is only, what has sparked it this time? Cautiously, I open the door to his bedroom and am greeted by the usual scene: articles of clothing strewn about, crying and screaming in his soprano capabilities. It is not until much later that I can make out the word “yarmulke” and I realize his usual yarmulke has gone missing. Long after the kids have left for school and Morah Chava has let herself into the house, Chaim still refuses to leave his room. With a sullen face, he keeps refusing my offers of a replacement yarmulke. Finally, after a massive search uncovers the lost one, Chaim treks downstairs. An hour too late. Or it is on another day, at snack time, that the meltdown happens. As I listen to the sweet chirping through my patio door, there is a joining sound of pitter-pattering feet as Chaim climbs upstairs to fetch his snack. His mood is jol-

Chaim is on the floor, hitting and kicking like he’s getting paid for it. ly, I note, so I smile in return and hand him a bag of freshly baked oatmeal cookies. And then it happens. Chaim is on the floor, hitting and kicking like he’s getting paid for it. After a while I gather it is chocolate-covered wafers he wants now. Something my pantry is short of providing at the time. After many creative attempts of similar offerings, I come to the disappointing realization that my creativity must be seriously lacking. Amidst all the ruckus, Morah Chava comes to join efforts in rescuing Chaim out of the drama and proves to outsmart me by a sudden discovery of an ice cream bar that had been stashed away in the back of the freezer. Thus, we put an end to yet another happy moment gone wrong. Our basically uneventful life seems to be forever sprinkled with a good dose of surprises, whether it is caused by a drink not being hot nor cold enough, a pair of shoes that are simply tied too loose or too tight or any other outrageous request that cannot be met. It may happen in the supermarket, at the toy store, or in the car. There will be chipped furniture, flying saucers, and a household of people scratching their heads in confusion and bewilderment. Yet, on the other hand, Chaim can be so irresistible with his extreme literal view of things, his endless barrage of deeply innocent questions, or the displays of his great academic strengths; clearly indicating a little Einstein in the making. Our hearts melt away. Chaim identifies objects by the names of their brand. He collects books published by the same

publishers. He studies the illustrations of every one of them. He will then point out what picture has been used repeatedly in other publications and exactly what alterations were done to suit the specific place they are in. Genius, right? Yet, it seems that while boys his age are into social circles and friendships, Chaim is studying brands off the cereal boxes and Band-Aid packagings. Chaim suffers from severe social anxiety which can find him sitting at the very far end of the room at family gatherings, keep us from planning family outings, and limits our options of leaving him anywhere for more than a short while. He will shrivel at the mere existence of another child in his company. That is why we were so unprepared yet, for the biggest surprise of all time... Recently, Chaim has been begging for a friend. Yes, it is an occasion worth making a blessing over, or throwing a Seudas Hodaya for. Instead, though, all we can do in response is look at each other in amazement, silently questioning which one of us had actually heard right. But then, there it is again, a request for friendship, for companionship, from a tiny little caterpillar that is ever so cautiously emerging from his cocoon. And all we can do is gather him into our warm embrace with a promise of setting up for him a class of other blossoming baby butterflies, searching for the same. For now we firmly believe that, indeed, every little Einstein needs a friend...

Recap: While Sara is out shopping with her girls, and preparing Tehilla for the school change she’s dreading, the neighbors have a pool party in her backyard.

“Tzipoiry.” Sara stopped the young woman on her driveway. There was so much anger in her heart, a hard hatred she wished wasn’t there, but it was, even a month later, and she was going to take care of it. She was doing it right now, by addressing Tzipoiry. Tzipoiry was listening to her with half an ear while minding her toddler in the bushes with most of her dispersed attention. Hashem, help me that my words should not emerge in a rude, rushed way. I want to express my feelings and create walls, or gates, that will allow us to talk but not trample. This was Sara’s wish, her rushed prayer. Tzipoiry stilled. She noticed that Sara wasn’t competing for her attention with the toddler, but patiently waiting until Tzipoiry made room to listen. “What did you want to say? No, Burech, don’t do that. It’s ichy.” This woman will never understand, Sara thought. But it wasn’t about that. It was about her, about Sara stating her boundaries, letting her neighbors know what she felt and what she expected. “You know, these streets used to be very quiet,” Sara began. “I lived next to a very old and genteel woman, who tended her garden and put up a fence so the two of us knew clearly where each of our properties started and ended.” “Don’t get your knees muddy!” “And then, all this shot up. I have no complaints. Really, Baruch Hashem, I have come to appreciate that our families are growing, Monsey is growing, Klal Yisrael is blossoming. And I was even excited to have neighbors, and to share. My boys love to play with your Chezky. And I like our Shalosh Seudos together. And I enjoy it when you come over for a schmooze. And your cake, thank you so much. There are so many blessings. But when you hosted an upsherin barbeque, and you knew you didn’t have room, and you knew you were relying on my backyard, how did you do it without asking me? I had planned to spend time with my children outside. I had no idea. And you tell me, ‘Your kids can also eat.’ First of all, we don’t eat that shechita. And I had made supper that day. Sara’s eyes narrowed. She was hurt. She wasn’t sure where this comment came into the discussion about property, especially when she was in the middle of stating her claim. Was the woman completely opaque? “Tzipoiry, all I want in this discussion is to tell you how I feel, so we can continue to be neighborly. I’m happy for you, your son was adorable, the event was gorgeous, but I felt very hurt and I wanted to share it. I feel even more hurt now, because

You’re right.” She was talking in choppy, resigned sentences. Her voice was very offended. Sara had an impulse to assuage her but held herself back. This wasn’t why she had started the conversation, to tell Tzipoiry Eiss it was all okay. It wasn’t all okay, and she needed to be respectful about Sara’s property. The last few weeks of slipping into a rhythm with her new neighbors had taught her so much. Tzipoiry wasn’t friendly because she was considerate and kind, but because of an insatiable need that most soon grew tired of fulfilling. The elegant, opulent houses didn’t not necessarily house greed and materialism, but strong women and families who took care of themselves and by extension their families, communities, and neighbors. There was so much to

learn when thrown into a sea of neighbors who literally lived on the periphery of her own life, and now she knew another thing. Not everyone has room for another person’s story. That night, after Krias Shema, Sara lay in her bed, looking up into the darkness, reviewing her day. Tzipoiry Eiss had come to rely on her, for her daughters to babysit her children at least once a week, for emotional recognition and advice, for a listening ear, for greenery around the house, and a place to sit in the shade. It was time to cut back. Tzipoiry didn’t know what the word “no” meant, so Sara would have to show her with actions. She would not be sending supper for Tzipoiry’s husband, even though Tzipoiry had confided in her that she was nauseous and had hinted that her husband loved Sara’s food and that “my mother always said, it’s just one more potato in the pot”. Tzipoiry’s family ate more takeout in one week than Sara’s family did in a year. They could find other solutions. And Sara would not let Tzipoiry’s children play under her window on Shabbos afternoon. And she would not stay outside schmoozing until Havdalah again.

“We need to get out of here, fast!” Sara said. They could hear the flames crackle and pop. Interesting. When she looked back, she could recognize her own growth. In the daily grind, in the struggle of sweating through each encounter and every emotion, it was hard to see how well she was doing. Now, she knew. Last year, had she known she would have a neighbor like Tzipoiry Eiss, who she would learn to both love and distance, she would have been up for two nights just from the thought. Tonight though, she felt serene, calmly thinking of solutions as she drifted… with a smile… into images of neighbors and flower landscapes and… There was a huge bang right outside her window. Sara awoke, startled, the sleep still clinging to her thoughts. The world outside her window was lit up in many colors of orange and light. Tzipoiry’s party was her first thought. She lifted up the shades right above her bed. This wasn’t a party. Her senses snapped awake. A fire. Out of Eiss’s window next door, the flames poured out, upward, toward the next floor, toward the sky. “A fire!” Sara said loudly. The flames were very near, she could feel the heat even across the narrow walkway that separated the building from her

own house. “Elimelech, a fire!” He said, “Whaa?” but then opened an eye and sat up. “We need to get out of here, fast!” Sara said. They could hear the flames crackle and pop. They ran to wake all the kids, Elimelech grabbing his phone to call the fire department once they were safely outside. Elimelech carried out the two youngest children, and, far from the house, made the urgent call. They knew already, they told him. They were on their way. The world was a different color, celebratory or menacing, evil or light, Sara couldn’t tell. All she knew, watching the fire devour the house through blurred eyes, was that the huge building, with all the beautiful design and new coats of paint and… wait, where were all the people? They weren’t out. Were they still inside?! To be continued...

Chocolate Oat Bran Muffins If you ever are in need of a change, substitute the cocoa powder for 1 ½ teaspoons of cinnamon powder.

Ingredients:

6 tablespoons oat bran

1. Preheat oven to 350°.

4 teaspoons cocoa powder

2. Mix all dry ingredients in a bowl.

2 eggs

3. Add yogurt and eggs and whisk until smooth.

6 tablespoons fat-free plain yogurt 1 teaspoon baking powder ¼ cup Splenda or sugar substitute

4. Divide mixture evenly among six muffin liners. 5. Bake for 15 to 18 minutes.

On June 23rd, the United Kingdom held a vote on a referendum about whether they should remain in the European Union (EU) or leave. This vote was called Brexit, a combination of the words “British” and “exit.” The option to “Leave” was supported largely by working class people, and won with a margin of 51.9% to the “Stay” option of 48.1%. The last time British citizens had gotten a chance to vote on their partnership status with the EU was in 1975, and at that time the EU was structured very differently. Here were some of the issues at hand, and the pros and cons to staying or leaving: TRADE European Union countries can trade with each other without paying tariffs. Pros Since Europe is a small continent, it made it a lot easier and cheaper for people to do business within Europe. Cons All EU regulations applied to UK business, and many of the laws were set up in favor of the smaller and less prosperous countries in order to level the playing field, which hurt UK business. IMMIGRATION A citizen holding a passport from any EU nation can travel freely to all other partner countries as well as reside and work in those countries without a visa. Pros It eased travel among EU nations as well as boosted job opportunities Cons Citizens from poorer countries were flocking

to richer countries, including the UK, for better job opportunities. In the event they couldn’t find a job, they were able to apply for social services in the UK. Although the polling had been closed prior to the election, the option of “Leave” winning came as a shock to the UK as well as the world. The initial reaction was an historic devaluation of the GBP (British Pound) as well as declines in stock markets across the world. The long-term impact remains to be seen, but in an environment of uncertainty the economy usually suffers. Because this is the first time a member country has left the EU, the process is unclear and may have an effect on the Economy for years to come. In addition, as a result to “Leave” winning, David Cameron, the British Prime Minister since 2010 (who had campaigned vigorously for “Remain”), has announced that he will resign by October of 2016, saying that he felt “fresh leadership” was needed to take Britain in this new direction.

Don’t forget your binoculars! This is one mountain where the principle, “The greater the effort, the greater the reward,” is not necessarily true, since High Tor Mountain is a fairly moderate climb of about 45 minutes with breathtaking views from its peak. The terrain is pretty much flat, with a bit of rock climbing to get to the top, but the 360-degree view you are rewarded with at the summit will take your breath away. Splayed out all around you, you can see the Hudson Highlands and Bear Mountains, the colorful roofs of Haverstraw houses with water all around, Bowline State Park jutting into the water, and the New York City Skyline in the distance. You see the network of trains traveling in downtown Haverstraw, its distance below making it look like a model train set. You can see across the Hudson to Ossining and if you know where to look, you can see the outline of the Catskill Mountains.

Dawn to dusk

There are several trails to take. The one that I have experience with begins off the parking lot of High Tor State Park. Be warned though, that it is next to the swimming pool that is already open for the summer season, so this starting point should not be used at this time of the year. If you’d like to avoid the pool, these are the coordinates for a two-hour moderate trail: 41.176922,-73.961378

This historic garden was built in 1934, funded by the Works Project Administration (WPA) to put people back to work post Depression. In the next 20 or so years, it gained popularity and fame, winning many awards, after which it went into much disrepair. It was restored in 2012, and is now a lovely oasis with walking paths, sitting areas, picnicking, formal gardens, a teahouse, and gazebo. Tucked behind the Rockland County Courthouse in New City, it is a hidden treasure so close to our town.

Hi everyone! The other day I came up with nothing short of a brainstorm. I miss camp so much that packing and shopping for my two campers is my ultimate enjoyment. Figuring that I’m living vicariously through my kids, I told my daughter to go on a diet for me. Brilliant, no? My experiment failed. She lost the weight, and I, umm well sorta, umm yeah, whatever. So, not everything can be lived through your children. Some things you just gotta do on your own. Like dieting. Go figure. Shopping for camp can be a really fun experience or a dreaded ordeal. Make it a great experience by doing it right. Lemme share a secret that will make preparing for camp so much more relaxing. Technically it is not a secret but it’s something we forget while we shop, shop, and shop. I don’t like extra things in my home but when it comes to packing for camp, I send along everything I can lay my hands on. Yeah, I’m one of those. ( In camp I don’t mind the clutter. Hehe.) However! Remember that essentially if they’ll be in camp for four weeks, or eight, you will have an opportunity to send things every week through messenger service or anyone that’s going down to visit. I see frantic shoppers and frazzled mothers, so just a reminder that if you forget anything, it’s okay. You’ll shop in a much calmer state when you have this thought in mind. That’s my big secret. Not the biggest secret, but I love secrets and I’m not sharing this with everyone; just you moms who want to make the weeks before camp more focused on spending time with your kids than freaking out about forgetting the bug repellent spray. Last year was my first camp experience with my kids. I gotta tell you, I was so thorough that this year their stuff will practically pack by

themselves. Trust me, there is nothing to it! All you need is cash, patience, perseverance, a credit card, a good meal before heading out to the stores, (a.k.a. in my case chocolate,) a debit card, the strength to say “no” to the 16th pair of shoes that your precious daughter must, must, have just in case it rains or snows and the grounds in camp get so muddy and icy respectively, a pen to add 13 things you just remembered to your list while being the 28th person on line for 78 pairs of tights, your checkbook, tops/skirts you want to match, oh and cash. Lots. Remember to order your labels. Save boxes from your grocery order. 1. LISTS: Make a thorough list starting from top to bottom, shampoo to shoes. Most camps provide a list with the basics. If you’re feeling overwhelmed, you can always ask the camp supervisor for help. 2. SHOPPING: Once your lists are more or less done (there will always be last minute things, that’s okay), you can head out and hit the stores. What I did was divide the days of shopping into categories, and it was fantastic! For example: instead of buying linen one day and the mattress pad the other day, I did it to-

nagel vasser shissel; or drawers for personal stuff/stationery/extra stuff. I prefer to use large zip lock bags for every category. Your kid will thank you when she unpacks in camp. Want packing to be much less overwhelming? Of course we all know that shopping early is the best idea, but try packing early as well. Let’s say shampoo, conditioner, hair brushes, soap etc., can be done by yourself without your kids, and be labeled and packed weeks in advance. If your kids prefer to choose the items, they can do it early too.

It’s more organized this way and at the end of the day you get to cross off “all items for bed” from your list. (Reminder: these are all suggestions, and different things work for different people.) I don’t know about your kids, but by me somehow, the nosh box ends up looking like everything from the nosh aisle sort of fell from the shelves and managed to land very nicely in a container that itself needed an extra bus up to camp. I don’t quite remember saying yes to 12 bags of licorice and 6 ketchup bottles for the potato chips. (Yeah, if you never tried it, now is the time. Potato chips and ketchup is the second thing I miss from camp. Somehow it doesn’t taste the same at home.) In case you’re wondering, Chew Chews is number one. 3. LABEL EVERYTHING! I had a great experience with the stick-on labels. They last after washing and are so easy to apply! if you find yourself short on labels, just use your trusty Sharpie, though it won’t work on dark-colored items. If I can avoid sewing, I am one happy camper! 4. Once you’ve shopped, labeled, washed, and sorted you can start packing. 5. PACKING: When I went to camp, I always used boxes. Last year, walking into my daughter’s camp on the first day, I was scratching my head trying to understand why people use suitcases when boxes are so much more convenient, or use clear containers for nosh, the laundry bag for the blanket, pillows and

NICE EXTRAS: • If your daughter is the homesick type, or just prefers fun reminders from home, print out some pictures for her to take along. • I pre-stamp and pre-label their envelopes so there’s absolutely no excuse not to write to their camp-starved mother. • The office provides bandaids and Advil, but it’s always good to send a sewing kit , first aid kit, and some meds along. • Packing tape to pack the boxes for homecoming. About the bug spray that you forgot to send along… I’m a lover of all life, including any kind of animal, mammal, or insect. In camp, to save my friends from losing their vocal cords due to unnamed flying object, I was the official, notorious bug killer of every moving organism that wasn’t human. But keep in mind, the one who’s flailing her arms, jumping on top of the bunk bed, crouching in the corner, shrieking and covering her eyes at the same time? That may very well be your brave child. So, put the spray on the top of your list. The next on the list is the bug repellent bracelet. Do you know if it comes with a matching ring and necklace? Wait. I think the top of the list should be antifrizz spray. Or maybe Gushers. Help me out here. Who among us hasn’t at one point or another imagined building their dream house? The process would start with an architect, drafting floor plans and blueprints which would then set the ball in motion. Excavators could be brought in if digging was required and once a foundation was poured, rooms could be framed out. Pipes, wiring, windows, would all be placed in their respective locations followed by sheetrock, a roof, doors, moldings, and plumbing and lighting fixtures. By the time you saw the cabinets hung in the kitchen, the appliances installed and the walls painted, your vision would have finally come to life. But of course, none of that could happen without taking those steps in order. Work without blueprints, or try to put up a house without a foundation, and you are doomed to disaster. The same rules apply when it comes to reading. A child who hasn’t been taught to read properly is destined to fail because everything that a student learns in school is based on one fundamental assumption: that they are literate. It was a former Secretary General at the United Nations who once remarked that “Literacy is the bridge from misery to hope.” A child who hasn’t mastered reading won’t just fall behind in class. With little or no self-esteem and finding themselves floundering, there are those who seek solace outside of the places we want them to

be. Lacking that crucial foundation, those who struggle with reading may do their best to compensate for the gaps in their literacy skills, but ultimately, just as the house without crucial infrastructure will eventually collapse, children whose reading is sub-par will likely find success elusive. My career began with teaching special needs children, and I eventually progressed to working with youngsters with learning disabilities. The thrill of helping students overcome the obstacles that blocked their way to academic success was what made me so passionate. With time, I noticed that most of the problems that cropped up were related to poor reading skills, so I began to focus on filling in those blanks with my students. This led me to embark on an educational journey of my own, training in various different areas of literacy in order to be able to help children with as many reading issues as possible. Zero-

Teaching her those skills made all the difference in the world. She went from being sad and depressed to happy and lively. We corrected that, and within six months he became an excellent student and was accepted by a top yeshiva. It is so gratifying that to have had a positive impact on the lives of my students. and need to exercise copious amounts of patience. Reading isn’t like learning how to ride a bike, “It’s not something that you learn to do once and then you know it forever. It takes time and constant review to stay sharp, and the younger children are when they start, the better the outcome will be in the future.” It is important to remember that not all problems will resolve themselves with time and maturity. If your child is having problems reading, don’t assume they will grow out of it. It can cost thousands of dollars, and years of needless heartache by having to deal with the problem when your child is older, so it is important to start on these skills as early as possible. As children put things together, create or use familiar materials in new ways, they’re constructing meaning. “Kids learn through all their senses,” says Ben Mardell, PhD, a researcher with Project Zero at Harvard University, “and they like to touch and manipulate things.” But more than simply moving materials around, hands-on activities activate kids’ brains. Between the ages of four and seven, the right side of the brain is developing, and learning comes easily through visual and spatial activities. The left hemi-

sphere of the brain — the side that’s involved in more analytical and language skills develops later, around ages 10 and 11. When you combine activities that require movement, talking, and listening, it activates multiple areas of the brain. These simple, yet highly effective, techniques make learning fun, while stimulating the child’s development for processing and learning literacy skills. 1. Find It: Phonemic awareness activity: Say the sound of a letter or ois, and have your child find an item which begins with that letter. This is a very fun and fundamental way to brush up phonemic awareness skills. 2. Race Car Blending (phonemic awareness activity): Use a toy car to drive across the letters written spaced across a racetrack to make a word. Your child will sound out the letters as they drive across it. 3. Playdough: Have your child form the letter or nekuda with playdough. If your child has a difficult time forming the letter, you may want to write the letter on a white board for them and have them form the playdough over your letter. Eventually they will learn to form it on their own. 4. Kinesthetic sand: Have your child trace the letter or nekuda in the sand. 5. Air writing: Have your child write the Aleph Beis/alphabet in the air, this will help store the information in long term memory. 6. Popsicles: Have your child form the letter/nekuda with

Popsicle sticks. 7. Tracing: Write the letter down on paper, and have your child form the letter over yours with stickers and/ or dot art. 8. Magnetics: Say the sound of the letter and have your child find the correct letter, and then place it on the magnetic board. This is very concrete and helps with visual memory. (This magnetic item can be found in any Judaica store). 9. Clipping: Write a word down on an index card. Then take clothespins and write a nekuda on each clothespin. Next, your child can attach the nekuda clothespin under the letters, and have him read the word on his own. This gives a child the ability to process the word as he or she is attaching the nekuda to the letter. 10. Blends activity: (This is specifically for kriah.) Some children have difficulty with blends. They may know the perfect sound of the letter and nekuda, but will struggle with blending them. A great way of practicing this skill with your child at home is to write down a letter on a whiteboard, while on the side youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll put out some nekuda flash cards, tell your child, â&#x20AC;&#x153;Make me the sound BAH,â&#x20AC;? and your child should then choose the segol from the choice of nekudas and place it underneath the letter. Two high school girls prod each other on as they make their way to the principal’s office. One’s embarrassed but determined; the other is eager but hesitant. They share one common goal: to learn Yiddish. Will the principal laugh at their request, offer them an English-Yiddish dictionary, or embarrassingly worse, offer to teach them Yiddish herself? She offers the latter and our two high school girls attend Yiddish tutoring session in the principal’s office during the first recess of every Monday and Wednesday. Why do they spend recess, willingly, in the principal’s office, learning Yiddish? Mamma Lashon, they call it; the language that pulsates throughout history as the voice of “der alte heim.” Where is Yiddish from? How has it evolved over the years? What is its relationship with other languages?

YIDDISH MELODY Yiddish, fused together through thousands of years of flight, migration and togetherness, has been rightfully described as a fusion language. So, which one came first? Although both modernday British and American English have evolved, British was definitely here first. Who is responsible for the changes? A large part is due to the geographical distance between the two nations which led to new variations in regards to accent and use of language, combined with the fact that America is a less formal nation than Great Britain, as is apparent in many words we use. (Think of “whilst” which is definitely more upper class than “while.”) But the one who made the biggest mark was Noah Webster, who was dead-set on the idea of detaching the former UK colonists from their “mother country.” Resenting the fact that American classrooms were filled with British textbooks, he compiled a dictionary which featured a new spelling form, based on his combined vision of logic and aesthetics. In it, the author dropped the silent second “l” in verbs such as travel or cancel with added suffixes, dropped the “u” from words like humor and color, and from there, the American English went its own way, differing from the “King’s English.”

This is where one can run into trouble when conversing with an English speaker of the opposite country. We think we ought to understand each other, but there are common words that are just used differently. Here are some true-life misunderstandings: An American is having a 1-hour visit with an English relative. “May I use the bathroom, please?” Relative eyes her strangely. “Um, sure, do you mean you want to use the bathroom?” “Yes, if it’s okay, of course,” she says, wondering if such a request is not proper enough for the Brits. “Yes, yes, of course! I’ll be right back.” Returns with a towel. “Here, the bathroom is over there. The water sometimes takes a minute to get warm….” “No, no, I don’t want to take a bath.” “Oh, you meant the water closet!” Bathroom: A place where one takes a bath.

Would you be able to give me some information.” “Certainly.” “Is she a smart girl?” “Uh…. um, well, she dresses quite smartly.” “But is she smart; does she have seichel?” “Oh, you mean clever. Eczema and Ear Fluid Anxious parents sometimes contact me, distraught about their child’s skin condition. In

some cases, the kid’s face is covered in a layer of dried peeling skin, bloody from the constant itching. They have a hard time bending their sore, blistered fingers, and scream in agony every time they are clothed. Even in not such extreme conditions, people seek quick relief from this “scratchy” condition. I explain to these parents that eczema and ear fluid are symptoms of an overtaxed digestive system. The digestive system produces the necessary enzymes and juices to process the food we eat. In young children, it’s sometimes not fully developed, and therefore the digestive glands fail to secrete enough digestive juices, which are crucial for proper breakdown and absorption. What happens with the undigested food (usually proteins)? The body tries to eliminate it through various means, sometimes by producing excess fluid that drains through the nose and/or ears, causing a runny nose or an ear infection. Another way would be through liquid oozing through the pores causing the condition we call eczema. With Hashem’s help, I have developed two unique products for this recurrent condition, with effective results.

WHAT’S LANGUAGE TO A TOT? As my two-year-old turns three, and my one-year-old turns two (no rest for the weary, huh?), I ponder at the amazing growth year two brings. From a barely talking, frustrated toddler, my oldest daughter has grown into a child who is ready for school. What a change! What a whirlwind! From learning myriad self-help skills and making sense of the world around her, she’s become quite the big sister. But I won’t say it was an easy year for Mommy. “Terrible Twos” is often used to describe parents’ frustration with their children’s temper tantrums and mood swings. Whether or not a child has special needs, this period of time can be challenging. Let’s understand this unique period of growth.

THE VIEW OF A TWO-YEAR-OLD Being two is hard. Children acquire new words and learn that with language comes power. Just watch my toddler say “NO!” With this excitement over the ability to communicate, there is also realization that it is restricted. Toddlers have limited verbal ability which leads to feelings of discontent. Children who are two are also learning new self-help skills, leading to increased independence, but then they are upset that most tasks still cannot be completed alone. Both my children resorted to grabbing and fighting as they learned to talk, frustrated that they couldn’t quite

express their needs. For children with delayed language, feelings of exasperation are usually even stronger, and can intensify if not treated. Overall, children who are two have some ability, some independence, but, in the end, are relatively powerless. That’s a very frustrating situation.

THE VIEW OF A PROFESSIONAL There is astonishing development occurring between 24 and 36 months, especially in the language area. For children who are delayed in speech, there is often significant change in language ability during this year. With all of this growth, mood swings and temper tantrums are typical during this time period. Two-year-olds undergo major motor, intellectual, social, and emotional changes. Their vocabularies are growing, they’re eager to do things on their own, and they’re beginning to discover that they’re expected to follow certain rules. At its very root, a temper tantrum is your toddler’s inability to communicate his needs and wants. At age two, their understanding of the world that’s surrounding them surpasses their verbal ability to convey their desires or complete a task through imitation that he or she perceives as achievable. Thankfully, their motor and verbal skills will most likely catch up by the time they are three to four years old, significantly reducing the symptoms of the

TACTICS FOR PARENTS Dealing with a temper tantrum can be utterly overwhelming. However, it is important for you to remember that YOU are in control. Your child is trying to communicate in a very basic way; listen. Use your words and a calm voice as a consistent reinforcement of the expected behavior. Take control of the situation through reassurance and eye contact and attempt to identify the message behind the tantrum. Give control by teaching words or gestures to communicate essential needs. Try to figure out if your toddler is tired or hungry. You can

acknowledge your child’s want and offer appropriate options as well as a simple explanation that affirms your understanding of their needs. By avoiding challenging situations, such as going shopping during your child’s nap time, and praising your child for appropriate behavior, you may be able to preempt a tantrum. It is of utmost importance that children have some means of communication, and can make themselves be understood. I find that sometimes even very young children receive speech therapy, due to their extreme frustration over their inability to communicate. Wellspring’s parents often remark that once children can express themselves, it often seems as if they have a huge personality change and are no longer so irri-

tated. When your toddler wants to do something that isn’t safe, don’t be afraid of saying “No.” Reserve the firm use of “No!” for dangerous occurrences. Other times, redirect your child’s behavior to another activity instead. But do find ways for your child to handle situations whenever it’s safe. To help your toddler to understand something, you need to show her what you want while explaining it. (“This is how we open the container of toys, see?”) When you slowly demonstrate to children the steps to independence, you keep them cheerful and eager to embrace the next phase in their lives. By accepting the changes your child is going through and showing him or her love and respect, you will help your child make it through this difficult stage with confidence.

Play Your Cards Right Piggybacking: An aggressive, non-approved method of selling authorized user spots to boost credit scores When discussing the practice of adding an authorized user to a credit card to increase credit scores and help build credit, the discussion wouldn’t be complete without a description of the more aggressive, piggybacking practice. Piggybacking credit uses the process of adding someone as an authorized user on the credit card account of a primary cardholder with excellent credit for the sole reason of building credit or increasing the AU’s credit score. Another distinction is that the authorized user and the primary cardholder frequently don’t even know each other, let alone have a personal relationship. The entire “transaction” is one of profit. Prior to 2007, this practice became a popular scheme for credit repair companies. They capitalized on the loopholes available at the time to artificially boost the credit scores of consumers with bad credit. They charged these consumers fees to add them as authorized users to the credit cards of strangers who were purported to have excellent credit scores and a great credit history on the cards to which they were added. Once their credit scores were falsely elevated, these individuals were then able to apply for and qualify for loans and credit, with interest rates they previously would have been ineligible for. The consumer AUs never actually received or used the

credit cards for the accounts they were added to. Cards for authorized users are sent to the address of the primary card holders and AUs don’t have privileges on the accounts to change the shipping addresses. But access to the card account was never the motive anyway. “Fixing” their credit through this temporary arrangement was the only motivation. After the housing crisis, lenders expressed outrage at the practice, complaining that many of their loans were the result of these fraudulently inflated credit scores. In response to the ensuing uproar, Fair Isaacs & Co. proposed a change to the way FICO scores dealt with authorized user accounts. They initially proposed a change through FICO 08 wherein no authorized user accounts would be included on credit reports and the resulting credit scores. However, the Equal Credit Opportunity Act requires lenders to consider all accounts that spouses are permitted to use together when determining the creditworthiness of an applicant. Additionally, the card issuers don’t actually frown on legitimate authorized user accounts where the primary cardholder has a personal relationship with the AU, nor do they wish to penalize these individuals by removing years of good credit history with the removal of their AU accounts from their credit reports.

The Truth About Mortgage Pre-approvals

by Ann Zeilingold Mortgage pre-approvals are pretend documents. It is true that a preliminary mortgage approval is an essential first step in the homebuying process, as real estate agents and sellers want proof of a buyerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s ability to secure a mortgage and bid on a property. Buyers want to know what their buying power is and what their potential payments and costs will be. Everybody sees it as a good idea; a prudent and powerful first step on the often perilous journey to homeownership. So, whatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s the problem? The fact is that mortgage pre-approvals are not what everybody wants them to be. They are not ironclad, they are not processed and reviewed by underwriting people, and they are not subject only to an appraisal, even though most of them say that they are. They are, however, part of almost every real estate deal and they have become essential in the bidding on a house process. Since mortgage pre-approval has grown to be so integral to the homebuying process, it makes sense that lenders would rigorously address this void. Not so. Prior to 2008, a mortgage pre-approval was automatic because regardless of the borrower profile presented, a mortgage product could be found. Remember, this was when income and assets could be pretend because verification was not a requirement, marginal credit was just fine, thank you, and down payments were unnecessary, because 100% plus financing was available in a variety of forms. Sometimes you didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t necessarily even need a job to get a mortgage! Needless to say, the mortgage preapproval vetting process grew even more suspect. Then it all collapsed. Defaults, foreclosures, loan buybacks, and billions of dollars of bad loan losses changed the mortgage underwriting process forever. Enter the age of the double-and-triple-checked, redundantly verified, every-nook-

and-cranny-financialdetail-examined era of mortgage loan approval. Should-be sufficient, compelling-argument, makesense documents would no longer be considered. Paystubs and W2s used to be sufficient income proof for salaried people, but now tax returns were added to the mix to sniff out deal-killing unreimbursed employee expense write-offs. Unidentified deposits into asset accounts now require sourcing evidence to determine origin eligibility. Absent the ability to document where the money came from, the asset is eliminated even though the money is right there in the account. Unless these mortgage approval landmines are fully vetted in the preliminary approval process, purchase contracts live in fear of never closing. The roadblocks dogging a fix to this dilemma are several. Mortgage people rarely ask potential borrowers to fax or email supporting documents during the preliminary approval process. Information describing employment, income and assets are tendered during a telephone interview, an

electronic file is created, a credit report is secured and an algorithm delivers an automated underwriting decision. That’s the process. This is precisely when the evidence documents should be requested and gotten, but rarely does that happen. Borrowers are wary of sending tax returns and paystubs and bank statements to a mortgage rep to secure preliminary mortgage approval, because they are not in the lender-choosing phase of the process, all they want is a pre-approval letter. An underwriter did not approve and issue your mortgage pre-approval; your loan officer did. There is no processing of the preliminary loan file and there is no underwriting review. There is automated underwriting, there is loan officer review, and there is hope that a high level of thoroughness was thrown in. Underwriting guidelines are many, and it is

the charge of the loan officer/ mortgage rep to completely anticipate barriers to approval before signing off on a deal making, everybody’s counting on it pre-approval letter. And that is about as good as buyers and sellers and real estate people can expect it will ever be. At the end of the day, the best that we can hope for from a pre-approval is that the buyer or borrower has been well vetted and deemed mortgage-able. That is why it is critical that the loan officer issuing the pre-approval has a proven track record, a higher level of understanding of the industry and guidelines. Beyond that, it is a roll of the dice.
