AMAZING EXPERIENCE
Thanks for the article on scuba diving. My husband is a licensed scuba diver, and always talks about the beautiful world undersea. Explorations, exotic plants, and amazing color are all part of the spectacular underwater world. Hashem’s wonder is all over for us to appreciate, if we take the time. Also, thanks for the great recipes. Some classics have joined our weekly repertoire, enjoyed by the entire family. Anonymous

A DIFFERENT DAY AT DUTCH GARDENS
I read one reader’s comments about the Dutch Gardens and had the opposite experience. I went to the garden twice already and found it very pleasant and relaxing. I went once just to schmooze with my sister, and once with my son who came to visit from overseas. True, it does not have a picnic area, but it is exactly how it was described: clean, neat, calm, and peaceful. Probably boring for children, but very pleasant for adults.

I went to the Waldwick Borough Park due to your magazine. When I got there I saw a big sign: RESIDENT’S ONLY. I parked and asked one of the city workers if I could stay. They said walking is fine, they just don’t want non-residents to use the park, barbeque, etc. The park was as charming as you wrote, but people should be aware of the above. L. Hurwitz

AWARENESS FOR BIKE RIDERS
You once had a really beautiful article on bikes, but I’d like to add one point. I often walk on the paths in Viola Park, and bikes often come from the back and I don’t hear them. If I ever decide to stop or change direction, I can suddenly be hit without warning. So I’d like to make bikers aware of this, especially the kids. When riding behind someone, either ring a bell or toot your horn to signal to pedestrians that you are approaching. Thank you.

MONSEY HOSPITALITY AT ITS BEST
A: 21 GROVE STREET SPRING VALLEY, NY 10977 P: 845.352.TILE (8453) F: 845.371.4700
It’s a known fact that a visitor always sees what local residents take for granted. I happened to spend a Shabbos recently in Monsey, together with my extended family, to join in a family simcha. My children who live in Monsey were instrumental in placing all the guests. Even they were amazed at how graciously their neighbors, and even perfect strangers, opened their homes for our children and grandchildren. All of the hosts prepared excellent accommodations. Besides clean, comfortable beds and working air conditioners, there were drinks in the refrigerators, nosh, and candles for lecht benching. Children were welcome in most of the quarters, and our children took this into consideration when organizing the placements. Another aspect of Monsey’s friendliness is the proliferation of “shortcuts” through what essentially is really private property. Whether using the wellknown, well-trod shortcuts, such as the long winding one leading to Vizhnitz, or the paths through someone’s backyard, to save trekking up a long steep hill, the owners of these properties are definitely doing a chesed by allowing this “trespassing.” What impressed me most of all, though, was the water. Yes plain H20. It was very hot that Shabbos. On every corner, kindhearted residents put out drinking water and disposable cups. Some “water stations” were simply folding chairs with a bottle of water and a pile of cups. Others, such as the one I saw on Howard corner Jeffrey, had a more sophisticated setup. Someone had fashioned a stand out of two-by-fours and placed an insulated jug on the stand, complete with a cup dispenser. As I was passing, I saw a few children refilling the jug, and adding a bag of ice cubes. What a chesed! The nicest aspect of this water dispensing was watching the “owners” of the water stations. A few times I saw children checking if the water had been used and exclaiming happily, “We need more. It’s almost used up.” What a beautiful way to teach our children the joy of doing for others.

LOVE Your Birth Experience
As told to: Basya Lev
I’ve always felt it is important to teach boys how to stay safe and to give them the tools that can enable them to save lives. Since one hears of many accidents happening during the Nine Days, and being that my husband is certified to teach CPR/First Aid, we decided he should offer a CPR/First Aid training to boys ages 8 and up after camp/ school during these days. We also felt this would be a productive outlet. A day after deciding this, I met a friend and asked if she could think of a catchy line for us. She claimed she wasn’t a writer, but soon returned with a captivating heading and an amazing flier. Two weeks before the class, she called me that she had told a friend about our training. She mentioned that at a CPR course she had taken, the instructor said children do CPR the best, because they do exactly what they learned without panicking. A while later, this friend called our headline writer and said that she felt this idea of teaching kids CPR is so important that she didn’t want money to get in the way of a child being able to take the training, and offered to sponsor a few boys.

WeighSmarter many options available, and one of them is to skim through the list and laugh, and to continue eating the way you do now. Another option is to take baby steps and eliminate sugar over the course of a few months. You can also stop consuming sugar immediately — eating healthy most of the time with just a treat here and there. You get to choose whatever suits your needs, and as I said previously, you even have the option to ignore the entire list if you don’t feel ready to make changes. Some of you might even say, “I don’t believe it will make any difference in my life.” And it’s okay to say that, as long as you believe what you’re telling yourself.
By Esty Weiss
Sugar and Its 57 Cousins Let’s talk more about our “sweet tooth.” If last week’s article on the effects of sugar empowered you to take action and reduce your sugar consumption, that’s awesome. If it didn’t have much of an effect on you, then I encourage you to continue reading this article anyhow. Now, as human beings, we are very integrated, and if we’re not feeling well physically, our emotional well-being will suffer. Similarly, if we don’t feel great emotionally, we risk compromising our physical health. Since there is no separating the different aspects of ourselves, in order to function at an optimal level, we need to satisfy every component of our well-being. What most of us never even get to experience is how great it can feel to eliminate sugar from the diet (and yes, that includes artificial sweeteners as well!). Unless you have been off sugar in every form for a few months or more, you can only guess what it feels like.
57 NAMES FOR SUGAR:
ALL PROBLEMS SOLVED? Will all your problems be solved when you go off sugar? The reason I ask this question is because clients bring it up quite often. And as much as I want to say no, the truth is that yes — eliminating sugar from your diet will be amazing for your health. Let me explain: When you’re physically and mentally stronger, you can handle issues and situations in a more rational, objective way! Life comes with challenges, and by remaining clear-headed and healthy, you see benefits in every issue you tackle. Can you eat sugar and still overcome the struggles in your life? Yes, but the effort required of you is very different when you’re coming from a healthier place. Can you still drive an old, rusty car? Of course! But how far will it take you, and how comfortable will you be? You don’t need to be a rocket scientist to know that when you feel better, you perform better. Your immediate environment — especially your family — will be affected by how you feel, either positively or negatively. Before I delve into the 57 names for sugar and its cousins, I feel that it’s important you know that there is no need to get overwhelmed. There are

Life comes with challenges, and by remaining clear-headed and healthy, you see benefits in every issue you tackle.
For some people reading labels is a hassle, and for others it’s actually quite enjoyable. You know yourself best, and personally, when I read the labels of products that are organic and healthy, I enjoy every minute of it! But when it comes to the aisles of the supermarket where most of the food contains some form of sugar, or an ingredient I can’t even pronounce, I hardly bother looking. That doesn’t mean it’s the right thing to do, because some products are definitely better than others, but that’s the way I shop for food. If I see something new or advertised as “healthy,” it will usually catch my attention — that is, until I read the list of ingredients. It’s truly amazing what manufacturers consider healthy or sugar-free. So, for those of you who are into reading labels, or if you are curious about the different names for sugar (some of these names can fool you into thinking that the product is healthy), then here we go: Agave nectar, barley malt, beet sugar, blackstrap molasses, rice malt, brown sugar, buttered sugar, cane juice crystals, cane juice, cane sugar, caramel, carob syrup, caster sugar,
Health & Wellness coconut sugar, corn sweetener, corn syrup, corn syrup solids, high fructose corn syrup, crystalline fructose, date sugar, demerara sugar, dextran, diastatic malt powder, diastase, ethyl maltol, evaporated cane juice, fructose, fruit juice concentrate, galactose, glucose, golden sugar, golden syrup, honey, invert sugar, lactose, malt syrup, maltodextrin, maltose, ma-
ple syrup, molasses syrup, muscovado sugar, oat syrup, panela, panocha, confection’s sugar, rice bran syrup, rice syrup, sorghum, sorghum syrup, sucrose, sugar, syrup, treacle, tapioca syrup, turbinado sugar, and yellow sugar. If that list didn’t give you a “sugar headache,” then I don’t know how you do it! It certainly gave me one, and after reading
about sugar’s 57 cousins, I’m just too dizzy to recall them all. Stay tuned for next week’s article on why calories don’t matter all that much.

Shabbos
Parshas Matos-Masei By Rebbetzin Malka Teitelbaum Sossover Rebbitzin
Miriam* shared with me a story that happened to her recently. She had entered one of Monsey’s new ice cream shops and was looking to have a special treat. She saw that the lady ahead of her had ordered an amazinglooking milkshake made with ice cream and cookie crumbs, and topped with whipped cream. Miriam decided to order the same thing, but was confused what bracha one would make on a milkshake that contained cookie crumbs. She asked the women in front of her, who had just received this milkshake, what the correct bracha is. The woman shrugged and waved her hand as if to say, who knows? “I’ll make a shehakol,” the woman declared. “That covers everything!” Miriam was aghast that the other woman appeared to be taking the issue so lightly. She resolved that she would do this right. She would be moser nefesh to make the right bracha — she would bring the milkshake home and make mezonos and shehakol on other foods, having in mind the milkshake, and then she would enjoy her treat. Miriam schlepped the milkshake with her to the next two stores so that she could finish her errands before returning home. Finally, when Miriam finished her shopping, she brought the shake into her car so she could bring it home and finally enjoy it.
46 / THE MO NS E Y V IE W
By that time, the whipped cream was beginning to look a little deflated, and she was sure that the milkshake was not as cold as it had been when fresh. As Miriam drove home, she grew excited. See! she thought. Other people might be satisfied to just say shehakol, but not me! I’m willing to have my milkshake less fresh and even deflated, just to make sure I say the right bracha! Hashem must
Even though they were returning from war, really they were coming to the true war, which is the war against the yetzer hara. be so proud of me for my mesiras nefesh! When Miriam pulled into her driveway, she reached over to the cup holder to take her precious shake, but it was not there. Confused, she leaned over and discovered that the milkshake had somehow slipped out of the cup holder and spilled all over the floor of her car. Miriam understood immediately why this had happened: she had judged the other woman and then pumped herself up with ga’ava over her supposed mesiras nefesh.
“Now,” Miriam told me, “when my car smells badly from sour milk, it serves as a reminder to me that what Hashem really wants from us most is to be kind, to judge favorably, and most of all… be humble.” It says in this week’s Parsha, “Va’yomer Elazar Hakohen… – And Elazar Hakohen said to the men of war coming to the battle…” (Bamidbar 31:21) The Sha’ar Bas Rabim, in the name of the Yetev Lev, raises a question on this posuk. The men had already returned victorious from war, so why does the posuk not refer to them as men returning from the war? He brings a story from the Chovos Halevavos that a pious man encountered a group of soldiers returning victorious from battle. The men were rejoicing over their victory. The pious man warned the soldiers, “You have won and were victorious in a small battle that matters little. But now a great war awaits you that is many times bigger than the war you just fought. This is the war against the yetzer hara that goes on forever and ever. It becomes even harder when ga’ava begins to infiltrate.” The Yetev Lev concludes that this is what Elazar Hakohen was teaching the soldiers. Even though they were returning from war, really they were coming to the true war, which is the war against the yetzer hara. Ela-
Hilchos Shabbos zar Hakohen goes on to enjoin the soldiers to kasher any keilim that had been taken as spoils of war, if they were made of six particular metals: gold, silver, copper, iron, tin, and lead. (Bamidbar 31:22-23) These metals might have appeared pure on the outside, but intrinsically they were impure and required kashering. Likewise, the soldiers might appear victorious, powerful and great on the outside, but on the inside, the true battle was only just beginning. The Yetev Lev concludes that this is the reason why Moshe Rabbeinu had become angry with the soldiers earlier: “Va’yiktzof Moshe al pekudei hechayil… – Moshe became angry with the officers of the army, at the commanders of thousands and at the commanders of hundreds, who had returned from the campaign of war.” (Bamidbar 31:14) Moshe was angry that the victorious soldiers believed they were coming from the war. They were growing overconfident, firm in the belief that they had finished the war, when in fact the real war was just beginning. The victorious soldiers had allowed the pride of victory to inflate their egos, and they became filled with ga’ava — the “food” of the yetzer hara. In the story above, Miriam had fallen into the same trap. She had indeed been victorious in a battle. She had exercised self-control and really had displayed mesiras nefesh in order to make sure to say the correct bracha on the milkshake. However, she had falsely concluded that the battle was over and that she was the victor. By celebrating her minor victory over the yetzer hara, she really achieved the opposite — she made her yetzer hara bigger. May we always keep fighting to win every battle against the yetzer hara. The first step towards true victory is keeping in mind that there is no final victory — the battle keeps raging as long as we are alive. We must take care not to allow ga’ava to slip in after each victory. May we merit continuous siyata d’Shmaya to help us succeed in going from victory to victory, and from strength to strength.
Q&A
One Halachah at a Time By Rebbetzin Y. Weissmandl
Q: Am I allowed to collect the water dripping from the air conditioner onto the floor in my house by putting a container (keli) to catch the dripping water? A: Air conditioners release condensation on an extra-humid day if they are clogged and can’t drain outside. The water that the air conditioner produces is muktzah, because taking humidity from the air and concentrating it into water is nolad mamesh. When this water goes into a keli, the keli becomes muktzah, since it becomes a base that supports something that is assur to produce. The process in which the keli becomes muktzah in this fashion is considered mevatel keli meheichano. Causing a keli to become muktzah on Shabbos (or in any way not useable) is considered soser, which means dismantling. This issur prohibits us from placing a keli in such a way that it will become muktzah on Shabbos, because when a keli loses its ability to be used on Shabbos, it is considered dismantled of its original intended purpose. Therefore, one may not place a container under a dripping air conditioner. The following are a few more examples of mevatel keli m’heichano. If a chicken is about to lay an egg on Shabbos, one may not place a container under the chicken to receive the egg. This is because an egg that is laid on Shabbos is muktzah and it is assur to be mevatel keli meheichano, by causing the keli that receives the egg to become muktzah on Shabbos. If a candle is dripping oil or wax on Shabbos, one is not allowed to place a container under it to catch the drippings. Again, by rendering the container muktzah, one is over on mevatel keli meheichano. Although there is a machlokes haposkim about this, it is accepted that one should be careful when peeling eggs on Shabbos not to put the eggs onto an empty plate. Instead, one should put an additional
item which is muttar on Shabbos, and is worth more than the eggs, onto the plate as well. In this way, the plate will become bosis l’dovor hamutar, will therefore not become muktzah. When one shells nuts on Shabbos — for example at a sholom zochor — one should be careful to place the shells of the nuts directly onto a plastic tablecloth and not on a plate, unless one puts another item that is muttar on Shabbos on the plate as well. In this way, the plate does not become a bosis l’davar ha’issur. Although Chazal consider a dirty plastic table cloth as a גרף של רעי, and allow us to remove it from the table because of kavod habriyos, one should still refrain from placing shells on a plate in order to avoid bitul keli meheichano. Although some poskim are lenient about whether using disposable plates fall under the category of bitul keli meheichano, one should be machmir on this l’chatchila and should not use a disposable plate to create a bosis l’dovor, ha’issur thereby being over on bitul keli meheichano. One is not permitted to place a keli under one’s air conditioner to catch dripping water unless one first puts another item that is muttar on Shabbos, and will not be spoiled, into the container. An example of this would be to first place a bottle of milk into the container that will collect the water from the air conditioner. Then, one can place the container, together with the bottle of milk under the air conditioner. In this way, the keli never becomes muktzah and can be emptied as needed. One may not put a towel under the air conditioner because it will become so wet that it will become not usable on Shabbos. This is assur is because of bitul keli meheichano.

By Riki Goldstein Uh-oh! It’s an entire week of milchig suppers. The good news is that you don’t have to spend the entire Nine Days in the kitchen this year — and I don’t mean by serving pizza every night. Enter fish. Forget finding a parking spot and waiting in line at the supermarket’s fish counter. Those days are finished, over, done, gone. From your desk or from the car, a quick text to Upscale Fish can bring fresh fish to your door, in time for you to grill, bake, or fry for tonight’s supper. Free delivery — no minimum order. Fish is not just an easy choice, it’s a healthy one, too. The fresh flesh of that flawless fish is teeming with goodness. White fish is lower in fat than any other animal protein, while the oilier seafood varieties, like salmon and trout, are rich in all-important Omega 3. To name just a few of the properties which the world of nutrition is rhapsodizing over, Omega 3 helps maintain cardiovascular health, is important for pre- and postnatal neurological development, may alleviate symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis, reduces depression, and slows down mental decline in older people. Surprised? You shouldn’t be. With its place on the Shabbos table mandated by halachah, fish is a beloved and timehonored Jewish choice. “Whitefish used to be the most popular Shabbos fish, but today it accounts for only 5% of our sales,” says Yanky Yeremiash, proprietor of Upscale Fish. Since 1980, global salmon production has increased in volume by over 400%, with farmed salmon accounting for more than 80% of the
50 / THE MONS E Y V IE W
world salmon supply. “Most families like to serve salmon and gefilte. Our xylitol, gluten-free gefilte option, available cooked and raw, has already gained a huge following.” Shopping at a specialist fish store is a totally different experience from picking up fish at the supermarket. Upscale does fish, and only fish. They buy their premium seafood — salmon, carp, whitefish, tilapia, flounder, pike, sea bass, tuna, turbot, branzino, brook trout, and red snapper — fresh as fresh can be, and of the utmost quality. Upscale knows fish, and that is why it tastes so good. It makes a difference whether you will use your fish as an entrée, a main dish or cube it into tangy kebabs, and the experts at Upscale understand all your needs. Master fishmonger Yanky Yeremiash will customize your order, down to the size of each slice. Upscale fish is impeccably cleaned with advanced technology, filleted to perfection, and beautifully packaged in an innovative clear box which can also be used to store your fish after it is cooked. To quote one customer: “I was amazed; my fish comes packed like a piece of jewelry!” “You don’t even have to wash the fish,” comments Mrs. J. of Monsey. “I can let my young daughter cook it, since the main job of cleaning it is all done by Upscale.” If you want cooking dinner to really be child’s play, our salmon teriyaki or Italian spiced salmon are perfectly seasoned — a gourmet supper ready to bake and eat. Upscale also knows that every mother has days and nights when even putting fish in the broiler is a headache. And for those times, they’ve got supper covered with their ready-to-go range: fried tilapia or flounder, sesame salmon or breaded salmon nuggets. As the only fish store in Monsey with text service, Upscale offers a steady order option. This ensures that you receive your fish just as you like it, at the same time every week. A weekly reminder text gives you the chance to make any changes or cancel the steady order. Even your picky eaters will agree that there’s nothing “fishy” about this fish. Once you try the Upscale experience, just prepare to hear them say, “Can we have fish again tomorrow?”
Fish have always had a special place in Jewish culture. Fish are the only wildlife which survived the mabul, and the only species immune to ayin hara.

CHAPTER 2
Sun on
Stone By Chany Rosengarten Recap: Malka’la is told her husband has died. Her neighbor Sara assists her in going to the levayah. “Keep going!” she said out loud, and her children looked. They clutched the sides of the carriage and looked up to her, and they saw the anger; they saw the cement lines she had carved into her face so as not to dissolve into tears, and her squinted eyes, so she could see something on the whitewashed street. But the sun was a stalker. Wherever she went, the shadows escaped her, the sun got into her mouth, her dress, her shoes. And she couldn’t sweat anymore because she hadn’t drunk, and it was so hard. So hard to walk. Another step. Up this hill. A hill that was so, so, so steep. I can’t do this anymore. “Mama. The way is so long.” “Shhh.” Her daughter was crying. Will she please stop crying? “Mama.” It was Rechy, four years old and plaintive, but also demanding, a request that Malka’la couldn’t heed. Another step. Pause. She faltered backward but grabbed

the handlebar and kept trudging. The heat was alive, the sand was on fire, shimmering as if it were animate, throwing rainbows of color back at her until her squint was so small, the world so black, her children’s clammy hands on the handlebar so far away… and their cries, an echo in the distance. She opened her eyes. Another step. The house was not too far. Why hadn’t she brought a water bottle? Because there was none. There was none. Every water bottle cost four shekels. They were nearly home. The house was near. “Go already. Just go inside. Don’t hold onto the carriage. Run.” “But I can’t walk another step.” Rechy balked. Malka’la kept walking. Rechy cried. “Come already. Just come already.” They were in the building now, although the small girl insisted on standing outside
in the rays of heat. Malka’la started up the darkened stairs, reveling in the juicy darkness. “Come inside already.” The girl continued to cry. Malka’la pushed the carriage in the general direction of the bomb shelter and hoisted the baby out. She schlepped her out and up and walked up all four flights. First, she drank, straight from the sink, letting the water gurgle and flow. There were people who said the water from the sink was dangerous. And they, they had filters, they bought water. But to her, water was water. It wouldn’t kill her. It saved her. Now she sat in a chair, felt her thighs shaking. Her daughter hadn’t come up yet. It was hard for her to lift her hands. Even though she wanted to cup more water with her palms and drink — because the last of the glass mugs were gone, those she had used with Nachman, those she had received as a wedding gift from her younger brother Avrumy
— and she didn’t have money to buy plastic, and definitely not disposables — she couldn’t get up. So she sat. The young ones were playing, thankfully. The older boys were back in cheder, having returned after their lunch break. I don’t have lunch. Don’t send them home. Keep them out as long as possible. But they came home, and quickly, before they were to arrive, she cooked up a quarter cup of rice with

Often, she made soup. The fruit store had a box near its rear door, where the fruits perishing from heat and rot were disposed, and she could take. Her mother had done it in the shuk, and she promised never to, but what was the better choice, between that and starving? But today there hadn’t been any. The road was empty, but for the Arab laborer sitting at the corner, waiting for work. She opened the front door and screamed into the empty cavern of stairs. “Rechy?” She heard her own echo, not the flap and rustle of a small girl maneuvering herself, or rousing to her mother’s name. “Rechale?” “Rechy?” Where was the girl? “Rechy?” She was so tired. Why hadn’t Rechy come up? Did she have to go down and fetch her? She went down the stairs. “Rechy?” The girl was not near the door. The road and sidewalks

Rechy?” And she hadn’t even told her little ones upstairs where she had gone. And they, too, could do something dangerous. The world was a big place. In the time her daughter had, while she was resting upstairs, she could have walked far, fell

Had she fainted from heat? But where? “Rechy!” Fear set in, a weight and a pump in her depths. “Rechy!” There was no answer. The afternoon sun kept beating, as merciless as he is all-seeing. “Where is she?” Malka’la looked up into the glare she could not see. “Where?!” She must have died. The Arab. The heat. The wadi, it was the wadi. She had probably fallen. Probably hit her head. She knew that story: one mo-

steeply, bled. Died. “Rechy, please answer me!” She could never live this down. She had to go back upstairs. Who to ask for help? Who?! Other women, they have a husband. She never complained. Never. Not with poverty, not when it got so hard she can’t even daven. But it was pikuach nefesh. “Nachman, she’s your daughter, too!” She was angry. She would never live with herself. Bad mother. Incompetent parent. But she’d been mother and father and provider and… and it only was getting worse. “Rechy!” She went to the edge of
the wadi. She had never approached the edge, the terror of heights making her dizzy with fear. But she had to now, and she bent on all four, to get a grip, and she looked down, and the bottom jutted up jaggedly, far, far below. She didn’t see her child there, but still, she gripped the rocks on the ground and looked, stared down, down, to where a small stream flowed. “Eibishter?” she said. Her clothes were dusty. Her eyes too. They teared up and she let herself — here on the ground without her daughter, her baby upstairs — to cry, finally, so that the plaster around the edges of her jaws melted into clay, then paste, then drooped and fell. “Eibishter? Don’t take away another one. Even though I don’t deserve it, because what type of mother am I?” A dove called overhead. There were snakes crawling here somewhere, but she didn’t see them now, she didn’t care. “If you need to take someone back to you, take me. Take me, because I can’t do this anymore, and I’m not doing it well, hardly at all, anyway. Take me. Please don’t take my daughter. Please!” To be continued... STAGE II WATER EMERGENCY REMAINS IN EFFECT DESPITE RAINFALL A three-day deluge that dropped 2.48 inches of much-needed rain over Rockland County helped recharge reservoirs, but was not enough to end water restrictions. The Stage II Water Emergency declared July 21 by Commissioner of Health Dr. Patricia Schnabel Ruppert remains in effect. “We still have to be extremely careful with our water usage,” said Rockland County Executive Ed Day. “We’re not out of the woods yet.” The heavy rain has temporarily delayed more severe Stage III restrictions, said Daniel Miller, Water Supply Program Manager for the Rockland Department of Health. The rain that began on Friday provided a moderate increase in the level of Potake Pond, a reservoir in Sloatsburg that is used to augment the flow of the Ramapo River to help feed wellfields that supply 20 percent of Rockland’s annual water demands. It also recharged the river, making it temporarily unnecessary to take water from Potake to augment the
flow. A water emergency was declared last month because the water remaining in Potake had dropped to levels that put our use of those wells in jeopardy. “This deluge certainly bought us some time, but we are still solidly in a Stage II Water Emergency with water restrictions in place,” said Miller. “Unfortunately, if hot dry weather conditions return, we could be approaching Stage III again in a week or so.” As a result of the rain, water demand has also dropped over the past three days. Daily demand was as high as 39 million gallons per day last week. It dropped to 32.1 mgd on Friday, 27.9 on Saturday and 27.7 on Sunday. Most of that drop was from people not watering their lawns and gardens because of the rain. The rainfall has had another effect: pools of standing water that could attract mosquito breeding. Commissioner of Health Ruppert reminds residents to take the time to survey their property and eliminate pools of standing water where mosquitoes can breed.
COMMON CORE BACKLASH CONTINUES TO RISE
New York State’s Common Core standards continue to face resistance with 22 percent of eligible students opting out of the standardized tests this spring. The number of students refusing to take the test has grown each year, with 5 percent opting out in 2014 and 20 percent abstaining from the optional tests last year. Common Core has been the subject of much criticism since its introduction and New York State education commissioner MaryEllen Elia acknowledged that the standards are being tweaked. “We aren’t going to be able to do everything that needs to be shifted and improved overnight, and even after we’ve done a lot of improvements, we’re still going to have more work to do,” said Elia.

Eggplant parmesan has a reputation of being a full day’s job with hours of patchkening. This version — while not as elegant as a slice of parmesan — breaks that myth; half the work and all the taste!
1 eggplant 1 T. salt 1 cup flavored bread crumbs ¼ cup oil ¾ cup pasta sauce (I prefer Gefen Tomato Basil) 1 cup shredded cheese 1. Peel and cube the eggplant. Sprinkle with a T. salt and let sit for half hour. 2. Place the breadcrumbs in a bag. Pour in the eggplant cubes, and shake until well covered. 3. Heat the oil in a pot, and when hot, shake the cubes into the pot. Leave it on a high flame for ten minutes and keep stirring. 4. Lower the flame, and let it cook for 30-40 minutes until soft, stirring every so often. Some of the crumbs may fall off. 5. Add the pasta sauce and mix with the eggplant. 6. Add the cheese to the mixture and mix. 7. Cover the pot and leave it on a low flame for another 10-15 minutes. 8. To serve: scoop the eggplant onto plates.

PARMA-PIZZA BY LEAH STERN
Perfect for those who enjoy eggplant parmesan and don’t have all day to prepare it.
2 medium eggplants Salt 1/3 cup mayonnaise
1 ½ T. water 1 cup Gal-Gal Everything crackers, coarsely crushed
1 c. pizza sauce 1 package shredded mozzarella cheese
1. Slice eggplant into rounds, each a half inch thick. Sprinkle with salt. Allow to stand for one hour. Rinse eggplant, drain, and squeeze out any excess water. This method will take out the eggplant’s natural bitter taste. 2. Preheat oven to 350°. 3. Mix mayo with water. Spread mixture over eggplant slices on both sides. Place on greased cookie sheet. Cover each slice with cracker crumbs, pressing the pieces into the eggplant with your hand. Bake covered for 20 minutes. Remove from oven, spread one T. of pizza sauce over each slice. Cover with shredded cheese. Bake an additional 10-15 minutes, until eggplant is crispy outside and soft inside.
SEASONED CHEF: Use any homemade pizza sauce, or add a little kick to a store-bought one by mixing in crushed garlic, a bit of oregano, or your favorite pizza spice. THIS RECIPE was inspired by one of my mother’s favorite pareve side dishes. She serves this coated eggplant, sans sauce and cheese, next to meat. Try it. CHOOSING YOUR EGGPLANT: Eggplants are great in the summer and there is a large variety of them. To ensure you have a good-tasting one, pick one
that’s lightweight for its size, and has a smooth skin (no bruises), and dark color. Seeds are what make the eggplant bitter. Choose an eggplant that has less seeds. How do you determine the bitterness level? Turn the eggplant over and look at the “dimple” at the bottom. If the dimple is round (nicknamed a male eggplant), the eggplant has less seeds and is less bitter. If it has an ovalshaped dimple (nicknamed the female eggplant), the eggplant has more seeds, making it more bitter.

Regular stuffed shells are taken up a notch here, with a kick of horseradish flavor. If you are not a fan of spinach, feel free to omit it, it will taste great without it too. (This recipe can also be done with regular cream cheese and without the spinach, should you desire good old classic stuffed shells.) You can serve this in a 9x13 dish or in individual ramekins.
Spinach Stuffed Shells with a Horseradish Kick
Ingredients: 1 12 ounce package jumbo pasta shells, cooked according to package directions. 1 cup frozen spinach (defrosted, squeezed dry) 1 1/2 cups MEHADRIN farmer’s cheese 4 oz. Place half the sauce in a 9x13 baking dish or in individual dishes. Top with the stuffed shells. Brush garlic butter over knots and bake in a preheated 350 degree oven for twenty minutes or until golden. Brush remaining garlic butter over baked garlic knots. Serve hot, warm or room temperature.

ELECTION NEWS
By Ruchel Lebovits
DEMOCRATIC CONVENTION IN PHILADELPHIA Following the Republican convention, the Democrats held theirs last week, July 25-28. The convention started with a feeling of unrest after it was revealed that the DNC had favored Hillary Clinton during the primaries, a fact that Bernie Sanders’ supporters did not take sitting down. There were many protests outside the convention hall as well loud “boos” during speeches from delegates inside. Bernie himself was booed when he called for his supporters to unite behind Hillary. Seeing as the sitting President is a democrat, and the spouse of the candidate is a former president, there were some big name speakers at the convention every night. The downside, of course, is that close to 70% of people are unhappy with where the country is at today, so associating the Clinton campaign with the Obama Presidency might not work in Hillary’s favor. The objective, though, was to paint Clinton as stable, dependable, and experienced — in contrast to Trump, who can come across as off-the-handle and clueless.

Michelle Obama: The first lady is very popular. She had been a very vocal first lady throughout her husband’s term and is a polished speaker. Her speech was personal and warm. She praised Hillary Clinton as someone who never quits, and said she was the only candidate she trusts to be the next president. Bernie Sanders: Bernie was greeted with loud cheers and applause
that lasted for several minutes. He thanked his supporters and the volunteers that had helped his campaign. He called for party unity and noted that he’d had a big influence on the party’s platform where many of his ideas and policies had been incorporated.

What is a Fitbit?
A Fitbit is a personal electronic tracker that you wear on your wrist like a watch. It automatically tracks and records every step you take while wearing it. There’s no need to write down miles or keep a diary of exercise times. Your Fitbit will take care of it all!
How does the Chesed 24/7 Fitbit Challenge Work?
Register on www.stepup4chesed.org and pick how many steps you want to challenge yourself with. You can choose the beginner challenge and aim to walk 7,000 steps per day; you can reach for the stars and pick the extreme challenge to walk 15,000 steps per day; or you can pick a challenge in between. For 24 days, you simply walk.
When does the Challenge Start?
The challenge starts August 15th and runs through September 8th. You can put the Fitbit on your wrist the morning of August 15th and every step you take until September 8th will be recorded.
How will your website know how many steps I am taking per day?
You will get your Fitbit in the mail with instructions on how to set it up and sync to the StepUp4Chesed website. Your steps will go straight to the website and onto your personal page.
How much does it cost, and what is my fundraising minimum?
It costs $36 to register with a fundraising commitment of at least $360. You can pay the $360 upfront or raise it through donors. Funds can continue to be raised until 2 weeks after the Challenge ends. Participants who do not meet the $360 fundraising minimum will be charged the difference at the end.
My friends and I want to do this together. Are there any team options? Yes! You can compete against one another or you can create a team and work together to walk the most steps or raise the most money together.
What is the last date to join?
Registration is open until Thursday, August 11th.
What is the deadline for raising my $360 minimum donation?
You have until September 22nd to raise or surpass your donation minimums. Any participants not meeting this amount - via payment or through donations - will be charged the balance to meet the $360 minimum through the credit card used at registration.
Where is the money going?
The money is going to support the 18 Chesed 24/7 Hospitality Rooms located throughout Rockland, Bergen County, Manhattan or Upstate. These rooms are open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year offering patients and their families food, friendship and a small piece of home in the hospital.

THE ORIGINAL FULTON FISH MARKET
Jewish children the world over are captivated by the story of Yosef Mokir Shabbos. Encapsulated in this simple tale is the fundamental message that preparing the finest delicacies for the holiest day of the week is worthy of bracha. That — together with the fantastic story of a jewel found in the most unlikely of places — makes this tale one of the most favored stories of Jewish history. To add to the intrigue of the tale, children are introduced to the exotic world of the ancient supply chain. For the first time, many children begin to realize that food doesn’t just magically appear on their plates; it all comes from somewhere — and comes with a lot of labor as well. Though convenient, it’s easy to forget this fact when foods like meat and fish come pre-packaged in the local grocery. One trip to the fish market, however, and the story of Yosef Mokir Shabbos comes to life, reminding us what it once meant to procure those delicacies for Shabbos. Luckily, we needn’t travel too far for that experience.
THE FULTON FISH MARKET One of the oldest fish markets in America, the Bronx-based Fulton Fish Market is open for 194 years and counting. Many of those years were spent in a location along the East River waterfront, allowing fishermen with teeming boatloads of sea creatures to hand the fresh catch directly to market’s fishmongers. Those fish would then be put on display and snatched up by eager buyers. Now, however, the Fulton Fish Market is housed a little farther away in an $85 million-dollar facility that boasts over 400,000 square feet of
84

fast-paced fish-hawking action. Though still fresh, the new catches are transported via truck to the sprawling market complex, and even flown in from various countries. Every morning in the pre– dawn hours, restaurant proprietors, shoppers for fish stores and grocery chains, and even individuals looking for seafresh fish show up to haunt the massive ice-box. Between the daily working hours of 1 am to 7 am, millions of pounds of seafood transfers hands, making the Fulton Fish Market the second largest in the world — trailing only behind Tokyo’s Tsukiji market.
INSIDE THE MARKET When visiting the Fulton Fish Market, you’ll see both large and small fish alike, as well as kosher and non-kosher creatures displayed in card-
board boxes and crates, layers of ice keeping them cool. There are also plenty of still-living options that can be found swimming in buckets and tanks until the moment of choosing. On any given day, there are over 200 types of fish on display. As you walk among the various booths, you’ll see thousands of fish lined up, some with sticky pads adorning their bodies. These are fish that were already claimed by various purchasers, and have yet to be butchered. One by one, each piece is inspected by prospective buyers for quality, and in our case, kashrus. Surprisingly, some say that despite the tremendous amounts of fish, there is little to no smell commonly associated with the scaley beings. Then again, there are others that caution visitors to bring along a change of clothing, warning them that the odor of fish will linger for hours. Forklifts scurry to and fro inside the building, bringing fresh offerings to the vendors and their customers. Meanwhile, butchering of the fish is
offered on premise, allowing even gigantic tuna to be carted away in neat bundles of steak.
A DARK HISTORY One thing you won’t be likely to see in the Fulton Fish Market is a mafia presence. At least currently. Prior to the mid-1990s the place was positively teeming with mafiosos from the Genovese crime family. In order to sell fish at the Fulton Fish Market, vendors were forced to pay for “services” such as having mafia-employed workers unload fish from the ships, deliver them to the vendor, and allow the vendors to conduct transactions. Refusal to pay the fee resulted in vendors being forcibly prevented from selling their supplies and witnessing their paid-for batches of fish spoil. “Skimming” was another frequent crime committed by the mafia. In acts reminiscent of the dor hamabul, these villains would help themselves to vendors’ products — though their thievery was often worth more than a prutah. Every vendor knew that in order to profit from 100 pounds of fish, he’d have to purchase a case of 130 pounds; the extra 30 pounds would (not so) mysteriously disappear en route to his booth… When New York City Mayor Giuliani entered office, he launched a 1994 campaign to end mafia control of Fulton Fish Market. Mob employees were forcibly expelled and new order was established under a tight-fisted government-regulated force. The Genovese family was angered by being forced out of their money-making extortion schemes at the fish market, and retaliated with acts of arson and unauthorized strikes. This time, however, the mafia family was no match for the city, and they lost their hold on the fish market. As a result, mongers were able to lower pricing

and finally began to feel secure in their own shoes. Nowadays, it is safe to assume that the fish market is a more hospitable environment for those who monger fish, as well as those that do their shopping there.
PURCHASING FISH Prices on the various types of fish fluctuate from day to day, depending on the season and availability. Without a doubt, however, is that the lowest prices possible can be found at this wholesale fish market — though obtaining those prices means waking up in middle of the night and traveling to a rather shady part of the city — something I feel is best left for my Monsey-based fish vendor! Another sure fact is that almost every fresh piece of fish obtained in New York passes through this point of entry. In fact, a huge percentage of America’s fish enters here, with documents from the 1920s attesting to a full quarter of America’s fresh fish industry having been processed through Fulton. Fish purchased from the freezer section of the grocery store, however, usually has a DID YOU KNOW? slightly different Fishmonger is the term history than the for a man who sells fish. fresh specimens Fishwife is the term for a on display in the woman who sells fish. Bronx. After capture, fish are often sent to China for deboning, due to the low cost of labor. When the bones are removed, these fish are then frozen and shipped across the water in specially made shipping containers designed to retain a low temperature. Though still tasty, the freshest option for a flavorful fish meal is to purchase your fish from the Fulton Fish Market. As an added benefit, you might just find a precious gem somewhere inside your sea-fresh catch... But if a nocturnal trip to the fish market in the Bronx isn’t your idea of a great time, you can get that same fabulous taste by buying from vendors that use fish from the Fulton Fish Market. Vendors like Upscale Fish.

Working Out in Monsey By Itta Shayowitz People seem to think that living in Monsey means you live in a utopia of health and wellness. “It’s so beautiful!” they say. “All that grass and all those trees!” “You must love it!” “It’s so good for you!” “That’s the way people are meant to live!” and so on. To be honest, I thought the same thing. Until we moved here, I had this picture in my mind of leisurely strolling through the park on Sunday afternoons and frolicking in the meadows. Then reality hit. And that’s when I realized that everything in Monsey is really a car ride away. Menachem wants to go play with his friend Yossi down the road? Into the car, everybody! To be frank, this new way of living wasn’t doing anything good for my waistline. I’ve come to realize that driving in a car in Monsey is a catch-22. Yes, you will need to drive (or take a car service) if you want to meet up with friends at Hava Java for some much needed ladies’ time. But on the way, you might pass so many animal carcasses, that when you do arrive at your destination you won’t have much of an appetite for

their delicious babka muffins. With me not even getting any exercise on the way to a calorie-rich treat, I was beginning to realize that I was developing a muffin top of my own. I knew I had to do something about it, so I decided to sign up at a gym. After all, it was a while since my yoga classes back in Boro Park, and the stress of moving was beginning to get to me. But like most things in life, finding the right gym was not an easy task. It was going to take some hard work and perseverance. The first gym I joined wasn’t actually a gym at all. It was an exercise class arranged by some of my new neighbors. To me, this seemed like the perfect solution. I could exercise while also getting to know m y neighbors. What
could be better than that? At first, everything seemed to be just fine. But about fifteen minutes into the class, just as the instructor was starting us on push-ups, the other women opted out and started schmoozing about their dinner menus, which eventually led to recipe swapping. Thirty minutes into the class, it was just the instructor and I. The good news is that I got my own personal trainer for the rest of the class! The bad news? The other ladies finally realized that they could schmooze about recipes somewhere else where they didn’t have to fund my personal training. Inevitably, the class fell apart. Determined to find something that would work for me, I kept searching. One afternoon, I took Menachem to the pediatrician for a well visit. Out of the corner of my eye, I saw

So, although the ruach was really quite beautiful, my waist line wasn’t benefitting from this experience. I decided to move onwards. a bright neon poster on the wall of the waiting room which read: “Brand-New State-of-the-Art Gym Now Open!” Amazing! I took down the number and by the next morning, I already had my membership card. I walked into the gym on that first day really excited. But it was strangely silent. No noise, no music pounding through the speaker system, just silence. I hopped onto the nearest treadmill and started jogging. Out of curiosity, I glanced at the woman on my right. She was formally clothed, complete with sheitel and dress skirt. She was holding what appeared to be an extra-large print Tehillim! And she was saying her Tehillim while slowly pacing on the machine. I suddenly felt very out of place. Deep breath, I reminded myself. Take a deep breath. After all, there’s nothing really wrong with someone saying Tehillim in the gym while dressed for a business meeting, is there? It shouldn’t really affect my workout, should it? Just for fun, I glanced at the woman to my left. Maybe I shouldn’t have. She was a carbon copy of the lady to my right, slowly walking with her Tehillim in hand. I guess they don’t play music here so as not to disturb the ladies who are praying; a deed which I greatly admire, yet one I feel doesn’t have its place at the gym. To my credit, I did stick with this new gym for about six months. But I finally realized that if everybody else is walking at a slow pace so they could say their Tehillim, I would not be motivated to go faster. So, although the ruach was really quite beautiful, my waist line wasn’t benefitting from this experience. I decided to move onwards. My journey ends at my current gym. Baruch Hashem, I found a place filled with like-minded frum ladies who wish to work out in a gym, and daven and schmooze at home. Best of all, the gym offers a yoga class. No, it’s not really the same as my beloved Nechama’s yoga classes back in Boro Park. But Tamar has taught me some new poses that I’ve never tried before. And she is challenging me in new ways. So, I am thrilled and delighted to have found my Monsey gym at long last.

The Map of Health Reflexology Part 2 Early Beginnings As is true with many forms of alternative health, there are claims that reflexology was around since ancient times. However, historians are divided in their belief on this since there is little indication in art, sculptures, and other archeological finds (which historians use to develop and corroborate historical theories and predictions) depicting the references or charts reflexologists use today. While there are pictographs showing the hands and feet being worked on, no proof exists they are performing reflexology; it may be grooming, massage, or other healing manipulation that is being performed. A chain of research and findings starting in the late nineteenth century played a role in the evolvement of reflexology as a form of healing the way we know it today (though it would take almost a century until it was recognized as such). First, neurology became recognized as a branch of science, causing leading doctors and researchers to study the effects of reflexes. One of the things which consistently showed up throughout their research was that a neurological relationship exists between the skin and the internal organs, and that the whole nervous system adjusts to a stimulus. As a side note, one of the discoveries — which actually earned the researcher a Nobel Prize — was that the nerves’ responses to stimuli (touch) don’t depend upon the strength of stimuli but rather on the size of the nerve. To reflexologists, this means that applying light
pressure can be just as effective as heavy pressure. Once those in the medical field believed that external pressure can affect inner workings of the body, they allowed themselves to notice connections indicating this finding. In the early 1900s, Dr. William Fitzgerald, head of the Nose and Throat Department at a hospital in Connecticut, mistakenly discovered that applying pressure to the nose, at the point where the skin joins the mucous membrane, creates an anesthetic effect! Later, he found the same results for different areas of the body. Delving into this further, he found that along with the anesthetic effects, the condition that had originally brought the pain was greatly relieved! Acting upon this information, he “mapped out” various areas of the body, charting which body parts were connected to them. Eunice Ingham, a physical therapist who worked with a student of Dr. Fitzgerald, continued his work in a much more detailed fashion, bringing the world “reflexology maps,” as well as a system of techniques to contact the reflexes in the most effective way. She discovered that not only could reflexes have an anesthetic effect, they could stimulate healing! She traveled the country, trying out her techniques on volunteers, bringing relief to countless people. Later, she went on the international lecture circuit, spreading reflexology around the world. In the 1980s, her student and nephew, Dwight Byers, founded the International Institute of Reflexology, which today has instructors around the world.
Q&A with Tamar Spiro, a certified reflexologist, practicing for fifteen years Tell us about your initiation into the world of reflexology. A relative of mine was practicing reflexology for many years, and I found it very fascinating. I like helping people, and I like to use my hands, so it seemed like a natural choice. Have you had any interactions with doctors in the field of conventional medicine in your capacity as a reflexologist? Though I never did, the relative who inspired me to go into the field has had oncologists, rheumatologists, podiatrists, and other doctors refer people to her for pain management.
In fact, a new development in the medical/reflexology field, is that Columbia Presbyterian Hospital has admitted reflexologists onto their medical team for rehab and postoperative care. My father-in-law went for reflexology after triple bypass surgery, and he had the doctors marveling at how well he recovered. What is the most common ailment you treat? I mostly see patients with back problems and digestive and circulation issues (including varicose veins), and patients with postoperative side effects that improve T H E M O N SE Y VIE W /

with reflexology. I don’t have personal experience with ear infections, but I’ve heard a lot of wonderful feedback from other reflexologists about their successes in dealing with this condition. It is said that a large part of reflexology is the relaxation part. How do you promote that effect? That is very true. Many, many issues are either caused by, or exacerbated by, stress. Most of the time (unless a client prefers otherwise), I treat people in their own homes, as they are more relaxed in their home environment. An additional benefit some people get from receiving home treatment, is that if they go to sleep shortly thereafter, they continue the relaxation process. There’s no going out and coming home involved, and that reduces stress.

Any remarkable story you want to share? I worked with one child who had terrible insomnia (every mother knows how this can impact the child’s performance in every area) and we saw great results with reflexology. Another success story was with a diabetic who suffered from neuropathy (a loss of sensation in the ex-
tremities). Baruch Hashem I was able to help her regain sensation. Have you ever found crystals in an area corresponding to an area in the body where the client had no pain? Very rarely. When I find crystals (which feel sort of gritty), I’ll ask a client whether she feels anything there. Most of the time, she’ll say yes. Sometimes, I’ll find crystals in areas corresponding to the shoulder, and the client won’t feel anything. That’s usually because a lot of the body’s stress sits in the shoulders, and people don’t necessarily internalize that stress as physical pain. Can you tell us about your accreditation training? The International Institute of Reflexology conducts seminars every so often, but many of them are partially on Shabbos. I found one in Washington DC and Lancaster, PA, which were in the middle of the week, so I went there for the seminars. Correspondence work (which includes required reading and videos) is another aspect of the course, as well as documented sessions. When I was done with all of that, I went down again to take the practical and written test which gave me my certification. The entire process took less than 12 months.

SPILLER OF BLOOD I don’t remember what I felt when I glanced into my bedroom mirror after returning from the levaya. I do remember the thoughts racing through my voiceless brain. “You are a murderer. You deserve to die.” I had no right to be in this world. There was no place for such evil. There was no place even among the dead. Perhaps I was to be nothing at all. I could exist neither among the living nor the dead. I was a murderer. A coldhearted murderer. I also don’t remember how long I stood in front of the mirror; I just know that those voiceless words escorted me long after I had parted. How soothing it was to listen to their tuneless chant without having to focus on the powerful emotions reigning below. Words are so safe and lifeless, exceeding no further than what resides in the dictionary. What a haven from the dangerous place my heart was. And so I repeated them again and again, letting them envelop me in their steadiness and predictability. “You are a murderer.” That’s what I was. A murderer. When I went into bed that night, it was only fourteen hours after I had hit Shany with my car, but I felt fourteen decades older. Only that morning I had been a civilized human being, and tonight I was a vicious murderer. I tried to let my new chant put me to sleep, but it soon grew quieter and softer, giving way to the crippling ache in my heart. I sobbed and I sobbed, beseeching Hashem to take my soul from the world. I could not live another day with myself. I could

not allow myself to taste food or to bask in the glory of the sun. Not after I had taken that away from a guiltless ten-year-old. “Avigayil,” my husband called softly. He was cradling four-month-old Baila, who was whimpering in his inexperienced arms. “It’s all Hashem. You were just His shaliach.” I did not pause my sobbing. I must be an awful person to have been chosen to perform such an unthinkable task. Noson sighed and settled Baila into her crib.
That was the first night for a while to come that I cried myself to sleep. No, I would not go to be menachem avel. I distanced the phone from my ear as my mother tried to convince me that being menachem avel would make me feel better. “Ma,” I said, bringing the phone closer. “I don’t want to add salt to their wounds. I’m the last person they want to see there.” The murderer herself. The one who took their precious little girl from the world. “I just won’t do it, Ma.” My mother sighed. I was growing immune to people’s
sighs by now. “All right, Avigayil. But, please, snap out of this depression you’ve gotten yourself into.” Snap out of the depression? Was I expected to be even more evil than I was? Not only had I killed someone, but I was supposed to not give a hoot about it too? My mother was not the only one who expressed her concern regarding my depression. My friends phoned me right after the shiva and asked if I would like to join them on a shopping trip. I dismissed their thoughtful gestures through which they tried to show me that they don’t consider me a murderer. I did not want myself around me, let alone other innocent beings. I winced every time I passed a mirror. When I held Baila, I felt sorry for her that she was the product of such a monster. I so longed to escape from myself. I felt I could never be loved again, neither by myself, nor by another person — and certainly not by Hashem. ***** I left the pediatrician’s office hastily. I did not wish to encounter familiar faces or receive familiar questions and consolations. I bumped Baila’s stroller down the flight of stairs — who was I to request help? — and quickly exited the building. I decided to take the shortcut through the park and once again averted gazes. A shriek emanating from the stroller reminded me that it was time for Baila’s feeding. “Oh, Baila, why must you cry now?” I whispered as I stooped down. “Why can’t you wait till
we get home?” Baila did not respond very considerately. “Oh well,” I sighed, “I guess we’ll have to feed you, won’t we?” I parked the stroller at a nearby bench and sat down to give her a bottle. “Hey, careful!” I spun around in the direction of the voice, and the next thing I knew, a little boy plowed into the stroller, his elbow bumping Baila’s face. She started to cry, and I quickly swooped her up. “Oh, I’m so sorry!” a woman gushed as she rested her hand on the little boy’s shoulder. “An older kid threw a ball at my son, and he lost his balance.” I glanced down at the boy and was surprised to see tears rolling down his cheeks. “I’m sorry!” he sobbed. “It’s okay,” I said, stroking his cheek gently. “It wasn’t your fault. It was the ball that knocked you down!” He swallowed a large sob. “But I hurt your baby!” Something squeezed my heart. I hugged him and walked away, Baila hollering in my arms. As I strapped her into the stroller, I felt Hashem peering down at me. Was He trying to tell me something? Was He trying to tell me that it wasn’t I who had killed Shany? That I was only the person He had chosen to throw the ball onto? I walked home, but instead of going into my house, I headed toward the garage. I strapped Baila into her car seat, and for the first time in weeks, I sat in front of a steering wheel. I parked the car near the cemetery and, with Baila in my arms, made my way through the tombstones. There it was. Shoshana bas Chaim Dovid. Trembling, I wrapped my arms around the tombstone and buried my face in the crook of one arm. At first, the tears would not come. They seemed to freeze behind my eyelids. Then, all at once, they melted. And they kept falling. And falling. And falling. I told Shany everything. I told her how I had been unable to forgive myself, and I begged her to forgive me. With Baila on the blanket near my feet, I stood at Shany’s grave and cried. I cried for the briefness of her life. I cried for my soul who had been the one to end it. I cried for all of those past weeks that I had cried. And I cried for every person who had ever had reason to cry. When I finally lifted my face — had it been an hour? Two? — I felt as though I had exhausted all of my tears. I stooped down and gently wrapped Baila in her blanket. As I made my way out of the cemetery, I felt the sun’s warmth on my back. I glanced up, and it peeked out at me from behind the clouds. And I knew that I was forgiven. Please note that is story is fictional.

Is an Escrow Account Good for You? By Ann Zeilingold How many readers have an escrow account? What is an escrow account, and is it good for you? The escrow account that I am referring to, is the escrow account associated with your mortgage payment. There are four parts to your mortgage payment, which can be summed up as “PITI.” “P” is for principle, “I” is for interest — which does not change for the life of your fixed rate mortgage loan, “T” is for taxes, and “I” is for insurance. This is your escrow payment. The bank, in a lot of occasions, collects the monthly taxes and insurance with their monthly payment, and puts this payment in an escrow account which is established for you. When the actual tax payment and insurance payments are due, they pay the bill with the money that has been collected and deposited in your escrow account. This system seems like a perfect system; the bank collects and homeowners do not have to deal with the headache of managing their tax bills, making sure that they have enough money to pay the bill when it is due. In our area this is even more significant, because we are one of the few counties where the property taxes are paid annually, not quarterly. So with taxes in many cases over $12,000, it is really hard for a family to come up with this huge chunk of money if they haven’t planned for it, and with our busy lives and multiple monthly expenses, many people would find themselves short tax time, and the real threat of losing a home to a tax foreclosure could loom ominously. The problem is that because the taxes go up annually, the bank’s escrow account is always behind the curve. The bank has a formula which determines how much money needs to be in an escrow account and how much actual reserve is required to maintain the account. When taxes go up, or someone loses the STAR program (creating a real jump in taxes), or a new construction customer now has the real tax bill, the bank will pay the bill, but they will do an analysis and find the escrow short sometimes. At that point, they will write a letter to their borrower requesting the shortage or giving the option of adding a portion of the shortage to the current monthly payment, adjusting the payment upwards until it is all caught up. This can wreak havoc on a tight budget. Additionally the bank is not only raising the escrow to cover the shortage, they also need to project next year’s

payment, and raise the escrow accordingly so that next year the problem doesn’t arise again. Over the past few months, about ten of my past clients have called me regarding a check that they received right about Pesach time, a refund from their mortgage lender. The bank did an analysis of their escrow account and found that they had collected too much, and were therefore returning the overage. When I reviewed the analyses of the first few clients, I saw that the bank had made an error. They had only projected the school taxes at $56. All the rest were the same. I realized this was obviously a computer glitch. Because of this mistake on the part of the lender, the clients were refunded money from their escrow account because they had been on track collecting in regards to school taxes, which are due in September, about $5,000+. The bank reduced their escrow accordingly, lowering their monthly payments by $400-$500. Sounds great, but what will happen in October when the bank finds themselves short by over $5,000? They will go back to the homeowner, collect the shortage and proj-
ect for the future. I estimate the mortgage payments will increase over $900 per month. If you find yourself in this situation, you need to know to be aware. I encouraged the clients that reached out to me to save the refund check and “pay” themselves, putting the amount of the reduction into a savings account for the original mortgage payment (if the payment was reduced by $500, to put aside that $500 monthly), so when the bank realizes their error, they will have the money to pay the shortfall, and their payment will revert to what it had been originally. Some clients cannot handle the fluctuation that can occur when the servicer completely miscalculates the escrow account. Recently, I refinanced for a woman we’ll call Penina. She had bought a condo with a tax abatement the first year. Afterwards, when the taxes were due, the bank couldn’t get the payment right. After months of phone calls, letters, and paperwork, she finally just refinanced to a new mortgage loan without the escrow. But, I had another client that did not escrow their taxes. They didn’t have the $9,000 that was due in September to pay the tax bill. The bank checked — because a tax foreclosure supersedes a mortgage — and the bank paid the taxes and established an escrow account.
In order to pay back the $9,000 that the bank had paid already and to have enough in the newly established escrow account to pay the county taxes of $4,500 due in January and the $9,000 that will be due in the following September, the bank increased the monthly payment from $2,800 to $4,700. This proved to be too high of a payment and the client actually lost the house in a foreclosure. Is an escrow good for you? Despite the horror stories that I have shared with you, most people are very successful with their escrow accounts and it works for most. Because the tax structure in our area is so unique, the formula sometimes gets a little messed up — hence the fluctuation of the escrow. I usually advise clients that if they have a bonus annually, or an additional seasonal job, or if they are self-employed and their income fluctuates, to use the lower payment to manage cash flow. This works well as long as they are diligent and careful about setting aside the tax money that will become due. If this is not the case, I believe the alternative is too scary, and an escrow account should be set up with their mortgage lender.
