She mentioned to me that she only realized what her problem could be after reading the letter. Little did I know that the chain of hashgacha pratis would pass down to me. Last week my baby developed a large, painful pimple on her abdomen. I covered it with bacitracin, but by the next day, the surrounding area was red, hard to the touch, and left her screeching in pain. The hot red skin was across a full quarter of her tummy. MAGIC STAIN REMOVAL

I’d like to thank The Monsey View for such a great magazine. I was amazed that one of the laundry tips for removing stains in your last week’s issue actually worked magic! One of my children’s garments was stained with Silly Putty. I soaked it in alcohol, as you mentioned and washed it once, scraped it off with a plastic spoon and washed it a second time, and it is as good as new! Not a drop of Silly Putty to be found. I am a avid reader of your amazing magazine. It’s something Monsey needed for a long time. I read with interest last week’s letter from a proud Monsey resident about the Moving to Monsey series. I understand her need to stick up for all of us, but I beg to differ on one point. Perhaps a proud Monsey resident never had to deal with the school district for special services. I can tell you from first-hand experience that getting your child services in Monsey is not simple! It is a bureaucratic nightmare! I actually have a friend who moved back to the city just because of this very issue. It might be useful for many of

I attend a gym where I meet individuals who are formally dressed and say Tehillim while exercising slowly. However, this has never stopped me from pounding away on a nearby treadmill with invigorating music on my Sansa clip. I actually enjoy the serenity these people inspire. SOMETHING’S FISHY

I really enjoy The Monsey View and look forward to it each week. This week was no different. However, reading FYI on Fish, something struck me as wrong. You wrote that the largest fish is a whale. However whales are not fish, they are mammals — warmblooded animals, whereas fish are cold-blooded. Please clarify. An avid reader Nissi Unger responds: Thank you for your letter. You certainly have your facts straight — a whale is a mammal. However, I would love to clarify that nothing was actually fishy in the infographic. I listed the largest fish as a whale shark. While whales are mammals, sharks are fish. And whale sharks are huge fish! The only reason it was named whale shark is for size — because it is the largest fish known to mankind! I believe if you ‘d like to see one, the American Museum of Natural History has a whale shark as part of their permanent exhibit. Gratefully, Nissi Unger

The time had come to move across the country to Monsey. My husband found an apartment for us. Its construction was supposed to be completed by July 1st. We planned our move for the beginning of August, on Tu Bâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;Av. And thenâ&#x20AC;Ś we arrived at our apartment to see it was not completed, and the floor was buckled in many areas. There was no way we could stay in the apartment, and our furniture was due to arrive the next day! The neighbor who lived upstairs of our new apartment was away on vacation. My husband called the one person he knew in Monsey, but he picked up the phone. Then I tried a friend who was staying with her parents in Monsey for the duration of the summer. I called her and started to cry as I told her what was going on. She told me she would make some phone calls and call me back. Within ten minutes, she had two options of places we could stay. The next day, we waited for our moving truck to arrive, but it did not come. In the end, our things came two weeks later. The landlord set to work getting the apartment properly fixed up. Over a week later, we moved into the apartment, sleeping on the floor until the rest of the apartment was finished and our furniture arrived.

The woman who reached out to me seemed rather desperate about her weight issue. She had been struggling with weight issues for the past 25 years, not to mention yo-yo dieting. She seemed like she had had enough. “Can you please tell me your magic trick so I can end this horrible dieting cycle?” she asked. “I don’t think there is anything out there I haven’t tried over the years, and all I can say is that I’m back to square one! Every diet had a list of promises that I fell for every time, hoping that the latest one would be the last diet of my life!” I have to admit that I completely understood my client’s frustration because I’ve been there myself, so after sympathizing with her current situation, I asked her a question of my own. “I know you’ve tried following many diets over the years, but were they all food related?” After I spoke, it seemed as though I lost my client for a minute — but then she said, “Of course! How can it be a diet if it’s not about food?” It turned out that my client had been focusing on which foods are okay to eat, and which foods aren’t. On one occasion, she cut fats out of her diet completely! Then, when she went on another diet, my client decided to minimize her carbohydrate intake, and focus on fats and protein. Needless to say, she sounded confused about all the conflicting information. So, I repeated my question in a different way. I asked, “Besides talking about which foods are allowed on the diet and

which foods aren’t, I want to know if a diet has ever taught you anything else. For example, do you know what to do when you crave a certain food? Do you know what to do when you feel stressed, and you just want to eat half a gallon of ice cream to feel better? What are your thoughts before you overeat?” At this point, my client mumbled something along the lines of, “All I heard was what not to eat, and if you crave something, either you just don’t eat it, or you make a better choice and take a cucumber instead of a Danish.” Some diet programs had some better ideas, like food preparation, calling a friend for support, going on a walk, reading a book, or getting busy with something else to distract you from overeating. I asked my client if any of these things had worked for her — and if so, for how long? If any of the abovementioned ideas were effective, it was for a very short time, until my client gave up and tried the next promising diet. That was when I gave her some “food for thought” — or better yet, some “thought before food” — and provided a rundown of how the mind has the power to control everything we do. I told my client that until she figured out how to manage her thoughts, she would continue to yoyo diet. “But isn’t the end result of what goes into your

Where is the beginning?” You see, every action begins with a thought. If you bake cookies, you thought about wanting to bake cookies before you got started, or you thought that you had to do so — or that you should. You clearly thought about baking the cookies before you actually baked them. And this applies to everything you do, including your diet. It begins with a

thought about how something looks or sounds delicious, and then you determine whether or not to eat the food in question. Either way, the thought comes first and the decision to act on that thought comes afterward. At this point, my client was a bit shocked, and a little bit annoyed as well. “I don’t think before I eat!” she said. “Who has time to think?” With that, I heard her chuckle, and she went on to say, “You know, this does make sense. And since I’ve never done this, I am willing to give it a try.” Well, it’s been two years

The king’s court buzzed with activity from morning till night. Noblemen and noblewomen of the court strutted about, dressed in their finery, relishing their privilege of being in the king’s palace. Servants rushed to and fro, some carrying platters of food and drink, others cleaning the palace to a shine. Outside the palace gates, the ordinary people went about their business. Some looked to the palace from time to time, wistfully dreaming of someday meeting the king, while others acknowledged the palace as a fleeting thought as they went about their business, and yet others denied that there even was a king, for who had ever met him? In actuality, the king’s door was always open, and he strongly desired to have closeness with any and all of the people – if only they would approach him. The nobles of the court generally did not give much thought to the idea, feeling that their high status as noblemen meant that they were already close enough. The servants felt that they were too lowly, and they did not dare enter that room. And the people outside the gate — well, how could they even think of stepping foot inside the gate, let alone the palace, let alone the king’s very chamber itself? From time to time, noblemen would address the public, stress-

ing to them the importance of loving and honoring the king. “The king’s door is always open,” they would declare. “All are welcome, and anyone can enter!” Yes, the speakers would speak and the listeners would listen, but very few people ever entered the king’s inner chamber. One day, as a nobleman spoke to a listening crowd, a simple

Anyone can enter!” What is stopping me? he wondered. I am doing work for the king, but I have no relationship with him. If his door is always open, then what has held me back all these years? Me — I have held myself back! And with that, he resolved to bravely step foot into the king’s chamber.

The servant turned and ran in the direction of the king’s room. As he drew nearer and nearer to the room, people started to notice the direction he was heading, and how close he was getting. The other servants tried to hold him back, saying, “You can’t go in there! People like us don’t belong there. Maybe if we were noblemen, but we’re not!” The noblemen began to shout at him things like, “Where do you think you’re going? I’m a nobleman and I never went in there, so how can you? What a chutzpah!” Noblemen and servants alike called out, “Only very, very special people can go in there!” But nothing held the servant back. He was determined to get close to the king, and that’s exactly what he did. What they all could have done, and could still do. It says in this week’s Parsha: “V’atem had’veikim ba’Hashem Elokeichem, chaim kulchem hayom. — But you who cling to Hashem your G-d are alive, every one of you, today.” The sefer Kanfei Nesharim notes that many people do not believe that human beings can have a direct attachment to Hashem, thinking that He is too big, powerful, and holy. They think that Hashem can only be approached through an intermediary, such as a malach. Other people believe that such an attachment is possible

for a human, but only in Olam Haba. And still other people believe that it could be possible for a human to achieve attachment to Hashem, but only for rare and very special people. When you consider the greatness of Hashem and the limitedness of people, it is difficult to conceive that achieving a close relationship with Hashem is possible not just for a few people, but for an entire nation such as Klal Yisroel. And yet, that is exactly what the Torah is telling us here. The Kanfei Nesharim emphasizes that every single Jew can achieve d’veikus to Hashem. He quotes the Tanna D’vei Eliyahu that even a manservant or maidservant can do so, and that it can even be achieved with one single moment of pure sincerity, as it says: “One might acquire eternal life after many years, and another in one hour!” (Gemara Avodah Zara 17a) Hashem wants to have a close, loving relationship with each and every one of us. His door is always open, and He is waiting. What is holding us back? Ourselves. We hold ourselves back. We tell ourselves that we are not worthy, or that we are not ready. We listen to the voices of others who say, “You? Such a relationship with Hashem is not for someone like you. You are not ______ enough.” There are many ways to fill in that blank. We are not in Kollel or working in a Torah field. We are not Rabbanish or Rebbish. We are not klei kodesh. We are simple people. The Torah was given to all of Klal Yisroel, and the door to Hashem’s heart is open to one and all. We just have to bravely take that step.

What is the correct way to salt foods on Shabbos? Salting certain foods can fall under the category of me’abed m’derabonon (‫ )מעבד מדרבנן‬and/or domeh l’mevashel mid’rabonon. (‫)דומה למבשל‬ The av melocha of me’abed d’oreisa (‫מעבד‬ ‫ )דאורייתא‬is performing any of the functions that is needed to render the hide of an animal useable for humanity; for example, salting, pressing, softening, stretching, shaving, or rubbing it. • For this reason, one may not polish leather shoes with oil. The Chachamim assured polishing shoes, even without oil. The poskim say that this includes even using a dry cloth or brush, or wiping one’s shoe with the socks that one is wearing. However, one may wipe dust off shoes with one’s bare hands, or hard plastic. • There is a machlokes harabonim if inserting dried contact lenses into lens solution on Shabbos is muttar, since it softens the lens. The accepted opinion is that there is no me’abed on contact lenses. • Min ha’Torah there is no me’abed on foods. However, m’derabonon there is me’abed on foods. • Chazal assured pickling food on Shabbos (‫ )כובש כבשים‬. Pickling food is an issur d’rabonon, since it changes the texture of the food. It’s a form of me’abed using food. And a form of domeh l’bishul, since it changes the texture of the food, similar to what cooking does. • Furthermore, Chazal assured mixing a large amount of salt with water, even if not for the purposes of pickling food, because it is common practice to use large amounts of salt water to pickle food. So it’s a maras ein (‫ )מראית עין‬that one is going to be (‫)כובש כבשים‬ • There is a halacha that when Pesach falls on Shabbos and one forgot to prepare salt water for the karpas (‫טיבול‬ ‫)בכרפס‬, one may prepare only a small amount of salt-water with less salt than one would normally use. This salt water should preferably be completely used up at the Seder. • One should not put a raw vegetable into a jar of pickles that has brine or vinegar. However, one may return a pickled item to its original container. The issur of pickling applies only to foods that are commonly pickled. Includ-

ed in this are most types of raw, edible vegetables such as cucumbers, eggplant, olives, green tomatoes, etc This issur does not include cooked meats, fish, eggs etc which are not commonly pickled. When one wants to salt raw vegetables for the purposes of eating them, one can use any of the following options: • One should only salt one piece of vegetable at a time and eat it right away, before it has a chance to sweat and change texture. Even if one eats so fast that there is no time for it to sweat, one should not salt a veg before eating the first one, one already salted. • One first puts the salt into the dish. One can then put the vegetables or egg with onions (eier tzvibel) on top of the salt and then pour the oil, mayonnaise, or any other dressing on top of that. • The most preferable option is to mix the oil and salt together in a separate dish and pour this onto the vegetables or eier tzvibel. These options are only muttar to be done during the meal (‫ )סעודה‬or, if very necessary, a half an hour before. • Salting cooked eggs, cooked meat, or other dried cooked foods whose texture does not change through the salting process is muttar. However, one may only do so if needed for that particular Shabbos. According to the Mishna Berura, one may only salt that one actually needs for that particular seudah (this can be done with none of the above limitations.) For example, one should not salt on Friday night in preparation for the Shabbos morning meal or on Shabbos morning in preparation for shalosh seudos. There are other halachos involved with regards to preparing egg salad (eier tzvibel) • The onion and vegetables should not be chopped into too small pieces. • One may not use any kailim whose purpose is for chopping to small pieces. This would lead to the issur of tochen (‫)טוחן‬, grinding. • One may not make the eier tzvibel into shapes, or form designs with any utensils on the surface. However, one may use a scoop for the purposes of serving the eggs amount (but not for shaping because of the issur of boneh (‫)בונה‬, building).

Stone By Chany Rosengarten Recap: Malka’la finds her daughter, and remembers the keren, a house bought for her children with tzedakah collected, for their future. She wants to cash it in now, because she can’t survive penniless any longer. The developer firm tells her the house was never built and the money was lost. He gives her 100 shekels; she throws the money away. All night, the animals spoke to her. Dogs barked, barked. Two cats fought bitterly, their cries of angst and torment piercing the long night. A rooster awoke long before its time. She got up from bed, because of what use is the comfort of a mattress, when the horizontal position does not bring sleep? She opened the window. Down below, just at the edge of the wadi where earlier she had lain davening, the jackals were out, searching for prey. Their crying voices carried far over the sand and shrub hill. She used to be comforted, long ago, that outside the world is wild, but here, in her home — her husband, her children, herself — the four walls provide solid safety. Not anymore. The jackals’ cries haunted her. Blame. If she had only insisted, back then when the money was there. She should have known better, should have stood up

for what she felt in her deepest gut. She should have taken it and used it wisely, and then she would have not been buckling today. It came to her in flashes, the things that should have been so obvious to her all this time, had she known. So that’s why her father-in-law had lost his own money, why he suddenly was not able to give her any help, despite everything. Hurt. So why didn’t he tell her, if her children’s future went down with him? Was it shame? To avoid hurting himself? To forestall hurting her, until the time of inevitability, when she needed it most? If only she had insisted, today, as she should have then, that they couldn’t, that it just couldn’t be. That she wasn’t accepting it with a bowed head. That she was a partner, an advocate for her children. That she should have been consulted, and if she wasn’t… what could she do? In-

stead, she took their 100 shekels, allowing them the delusion that they had somehow repaid what could never be given back. And regret. Why had she let the 100 shekels fly away in the wind, as if she could replace it, as if she didn’t have six mouths to feed — and come shame or famine, she would never forsake her job as a mother. Why had she let it go? And also, she felt resigned. All this had happened in the immediate past. What about the future? Tomorrow was another day. Another day to figure out how to possibly feed them, without having the water shut off. Another day in which, minute by minute, she would fight for survival. And then peace. She fell asleep. Right before she did, she remembered praying, earlier today, that her child be alive. Her prayer was answered. Her prayer was answered. She should ask more. Let her

Coming home and washing off the pile of rot from her vegetables, she discovered that in the entire pile there were only two inner pieces of squash she could salvage, and the faintest sliver of pepper not yet rotted. Hungry. Again. And here the children were. She had to go to America, infuse hope. There was no way she could even entertain going. She couldn’t just continue. She couldn’t just keep going. One more day. But even today was hard. Even today was too hard. Going was as disruptive as putting her children in the orphanage. But the other alternative was staying here in the now, the unbearable, unsustainable day that would end in them going to the orphanage, leaving her orphaned of her children. What was the alternative? Challahâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Best Friend What started out for many as a container of chrein to add tang to the fish, has turned into a virtual explosion of exotic flavors served at the first course of the Shabbos meal. On Shabbos Chazon, we make do with the basics, but come Shabbos Nachamu, what better way to welcome such a special Shabbos than with variety of condiments lâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;kavod Shabbos? Dips is such a going item in my house, that I determine the amount of challahs I need for a given week not by how many people will be at the seudah, but by the amount of dips I prepare. Gut Shabbos!

BEST EVER TOMATO DIP

4 large tomatoes Â˝ cup oil 3 capfuls vinegar 3 cloves garlic or 3 frozen garlic cubes 1 tsp. salt 1 tsp. red pepper flakes 2-3 T. sugar, to taste 1. Chop tomatoes in food processor with knife attachment. Add oil and continue blending until smooth. Do not omit this step â&#x20AC;&#x201D; this is the secret to the creamiest tomato dip ever! 2. Add the rest of the ingredients and blend until completely combined.

¼ cup oil 1 Spanish onion, diced 4 cloves garlic, diced — or 4 frozen garlic cubes 2 red pepper, diced 2 green pepper, diced 1 28-oz can whole tomatoes, peeled 1 28-oz can crushed tomatoes 2 T. paprika 1 T. salt 1 tsp. crushed red pepper flakes 2 ½ T. sugar 1. Sauté onion and garlic until golden. 2. Add peppers and sauté until softened. 3. Add whole tomatoes, crushed tomatoes, paprika, salt, sugar and pepper flakes. Cook on medium heat for about 2 hours. 4. After 1 hour of cooking, mash to spread consistency. 5. Keeps in refrigerator for up to 10 days.

New Tappan Zee Hits Halfway Mark Despite a midday terrifying crane collapse just weeks ago that stranded hundreds of drivers, tied up traffic for miles, and left lanes closed for hours, the new Tappan Zee Bridge project is progressing nicely. With 35 of the 43 pairs of the bridge’s piers already completed, the structure of the new bridge is becoming visible, and most of the steel structure is expected to be finished by October. The New York State

Thruway estimates that the first portion of the project will be open to eight lanes of vehicular traffic at the end of 2017. The new bridge will have eight 419-foot towers held up by 14 miles of metal cable and the projected completion date for the twin spans is 2018. Once finished, the bridges will feature four lanes in each direction plus dedicated bicycle and pedestrian paths with scenic rest areas, four

A Ramapo Police Department officer on routine patrol came to the rescue of a local mother last week after the woman accidentally locked her infant inside her car at the Spook Rock Town Pool. I’m probably not the only one who finds it amusing to observe a mother shopping with her almost Bar-Mitzvah-aged son. “Ma, do we really have to go to another store?” Where is all that energy he has when climbing trees and scaling walls? But all joking aside, men truly view the world differently than women. No, they do not enjoy going from store to store on Sunday, and no, they do not feel a tingle of excitement when they hear that they get to visit the coat and the shoe store on the same day. Ahh… but they are not deprived of “retail therapy” at all. MONSEY ON THE ROAD: The Early LEASELAND Years

and How a Young Man’s Brainstorm, Courage, Ingenuity and Hard Work Made Our Lives Safer, Smarter, and Much More Affordable by Jeremiah Richter

The year was 1991. George H.W. Bush was president. The war was in Kuwait.

The Dow Jones was 3,168. The average American’s rent was $495/month. You could buy either a dozen eggs, or a gallon of gas for $1.10 but not in the same place. Scientists had invented, but barely introduced the “Car Phone”, and Detroit was fiddling with an idea called an “Air Bag.”

In those days, if you felt like having – or needed – a new car you did what everybody

else did; you checked out the new car ads for a few months, walked into a big, white showroom with huge, glass windows, kicked a few tires, made your choice, and then let a salesman and a couple of managers drain the red out of your cheeks and the green out of your savings account!

If, by the time you got home, your post-traumatic stress syndrome had

calmed a bit, you probably tried to figure out how you had agreed to fork over six or seven thousand dollars more than you had planned on spending. The answer by the way had to do with those glittery showrooms (they cost car dealerships $3,000,000 a pop) and those car ads Detroit and the dealerships ran (to the tune of a couple of billion

dollars a year) and the fact that since someone had to pay for all that overhead the car boys figured why not you.

The solution would turn out to be that young man – Joel Goldberg’s brainstorm:

LEASELAND.

You see, when Joel thought about those dealership assaults on our wallets, he realized there had to be a solution. And he hit on it; one as old as the hills, with a wrinkle. Flume Gorge offers two miles of trails for a self-guided spectacular walk through a natural chasm, over covered bridges, and past waterfalls. It takes about two hours to hike the entire trail, but it’s not too difficult even for younger children, especially as they get their action in the caves which they can crawl through and explore. Due to its remarkable location, weather, and history, a drive on the highest peak in the Northeast is a spectacular experience. At 6,288 feet, you’ll be treated to panoramic views on the summit, spanning distant mountains and valleys. The constantly changing weather at the peak adds to the mystique, often allowing visitors to experience high winds and dramatic cloud formations. The temperature on the summit can be very low, and it’s windy, so bring along warm gear. The road is 7.6 miles long. If you are not comfortable with navigating heights or narrow mountain roads without guardrails, there are guided tours available for the whole family to enjoy the breathtaking views from the comfort of the passenger area of a van. There are different guided tours available. The most basic is a 2-hour tour, featuring 30 minutes to and from the summit with a tour guide and 60 minutes on the summit, which includes complimentary access to Mount Washington Observatory.

Over the last few weeks, Trump has continuously been in the news, but for the most part, the reports were not about the messages his campaign is trying to get out there — that Hillary Clinton is not trustworthy and is part of the failing Obama administration, and that he will be a hardliner against terrorists etc. Instead, as we discussed last week, he was feuding with a military family, with his own party, and in the latest of gaffes, he was accused of advocating violence against Hillary Clinton. In a speech in Wilmington, North Carolina, he said that Hillary Clinton wants to abolish the Second Amendment, which is the right to bear arms. He went on to say, “If she gets to pick her judges, nothing you can do folks — although, the Second Amendment people, maybe there is, I don’t know.” The media, of course, reacted with outrage. His response to it all? Attack the media. It is a well-known that by and large, the mainstream media is, in fact, supportive of the Democratic Party. But how much of the coverage has been legitimately unfair and how much of it has been deserved? Trump has been an easy target, constantly providing fodder for a media that is looking for ratings. He has on more than one occasion said that “all media is good media,” and in the primary season, this seemed to have worked for him. He

has probably gotten more free coverage than any candidate in history. But as the elections get closer, and the voters are looking at their choices more seriously, it seems like Trump can no longer afford just any coverage. His poll numbers have continuously dropped, particularly in swing states which he will have to carry to ensure a win. His campaign has attempted to shift the message, by having him give a foreign policy speech, mainly focused on his plans to fight ISIS. But it is doubtful that a speech here and there will turn the campaign around. What they will have to do is keep the focus on their message and not allow their candidate to sabotage his own campaign.

HILLARY CLINTON’S TAX RETURNS Over the weekend, Hillary Clinton and her running mate Tim Kaine released their 2015 tax returns. This was done mostly to highlight the fact that Donald Trump has refused to release his tax returns, the first candidate since Richard Nixon to do so. But some of information on the tax return might prove to be a problem for her. For starters, the Clinton’s income in 2015 was roughly 10.6 million, putting them in the top 0.1% of earners in the United States. For a candidate who purports to represent the little guy, and one that has tried painting her opponent as rich and out of touch, the numbers do not add up. In addition, most of this income came from speeches that both Bill and Hillary have given, in some cases to organizations that critics have claimed will be a conflict of interest in a Clinton Administration. During the primary season, Bernie Sanders had continuously focused on these speeches to paint Clinton as a Wall Street insider. And much of the charity they gave was to their family foundation, which means that the charities that benefited from these donations will not be disclosed. But her argument remains; she has been transparent with the American people, while Trump has continued to be evasive.

Driving in Monsey By Itta Shayowitz Those of us who thought we would be escaping the traffic conditions of Thirteenth Avenue by moving to Monsey may have to reconsider. Okay, seriously, it’s not that bad. But traffic has certainly become a topic of conversation for Monsey folk in the recent past. There’s no denying that sitting in traffic has become an integral part of Monsey living. Unless you have figured out a way to avoid the 59, the 306, and Main Street, it will also become a part of your life. Oh, and the corner of 59 and Saddle River? That one even made it into the Monsey Monopoly game. On the other hand, I’ve discovered that sitting in traffic is not altogether a bad thing. In fact, you can get a lot done while waiting for the car in front of you to move up another inch. For example, you can write an article about the traffic! In addition, waiting for the light to turn green is a great opportunity to catch up with friends. I don’t mean on the phone, chas v’shalom (unless you’re using a hands-free device, in which case you’re good). I mean the long-lost friend who you spot in the car just across the lane from you. Or the neigh-

bor you never really had anything to do with before. But now that you’re both stuck in traffic together, you share a common bond (and a common enemy). So this would be a really good time to roll down the window and start a conversation. You can really get to know each other. And hopefully, the people in the vehicles surrounding you will pretend that they don’t hear you. One amazing thing I noticed about Monsey driving, by the way, is that there’s a lot less honking than in the big city. That’s really nice and very much appreciated by this former city girl. But I’d also like to know, -- is there a proper protocol for alerting drivers when you see a deer on the road? Personally, I like

to flash my blinkers at the person driving towards me in the opposite lane to warn them. But I’m pretty sure I made that one up. Now when my husband drives, I have designated myself as the official deer-watcher-outer (not an actual word, everybody) in the family. Usually, I’ll spot one right away and I’ll start shouting, “A deer! A deer!” About a mile or so later, (he drives pretty fast) he’ll say, “Where? I don’t see it!” This happens every time! So one day, I was picking up Menachem from Yeshiva and on the way home, we got into a little fender bender. Needless to say, I was pretty shaken up. But when I turned to the back seat, Menachem was actually rather enjoying himself. “Yay! The car went bumpity bump!” And the baby woke from her nap and looked around with a curi-

As I waited in the hot sun for the police to arrive at the scene, I was amazed at how many cars stopped to offer their assistance. To some of these people I was a perfect stranger. Others were family friends and neighbors. It was a huge relief when one woman turned out to be a mother of Menachem’s classmate, and she offered to take him and the baby home with her while I waited. At that moment, even though I was stressed out, I came to realize just how lucky I am to have joined a community so rich in chesed. Another neighbor offered to go to my house and wait for the bus to drop off my daughter, after which she brought her in to play. And then, a woman who

Mount Everest is the world’s highest mountain at 29,035 feet. (Don’t let anyone tell you it’s Mauna Kea in Hawaii, because although it is taller, it is underwater and not considered to be the tallest. It is 33,474 feet from top to bottom).

The summit of Everest is only slightly lower than the height a jet airliner flies at.

A mountain range is a series or chain of mountains that are close together.

The average annual temperature on Mount Washington’s summit is 26.5°F. Temperatures are extreme, ranging from -47°F to 72°F.

35.3 miles per hour — average wind speed, but hurricaneforce winds over 75 mph occur 110 days each year!

Snowfall, which can occur every month of the year, averages 21.2 feet (645 centimeters). It has even snowed in August.

Fold mountains: formed when Earth’s plates run into each other, forcing the earth’s crust to crumple and fold, like the Himalayas and Andes.

Fault-block: form where cracks in Earth’s crust force some rocks up and others down like the Sierra Nevada in California.

Second highest mountain above sea level, after Everest, is K2, at 28,251ft.

K2 is in the Karakoram Range, hence the initial “K.” To climbers it is the “savage mountain”: one in four who attempt to get to the summit die, and it is unconquered in winter.

The oldest U.S. maintained foot trail and most popular in the White Mountains is 8.2 miles. It runs along the Presidential Range from Crawford Notch to Mount Washington’s summit.

The mountain was named for General George Washington before he became President. 0 people have been struck by lightning on the mountain.

Volcanic: formed when volcanoes erupt and molten rock piles up on itself.

Dome Mountains: formed when magma pushes the crust up but hardens before erupting onto the surface. Wind and rain pummel the domes, sculpting peaks and valley, like the Adirondack Mountains of New York.

Plateau mountains: formed as Earth’s crust collides and push up the land without folding or faulting. They are also shaped by weathering and erosion.

It’s only 6,800 ft. Relatively, it’s just a “hill.” However, because of its extreme weather it has claimed over 137 lives between 1849-2010.

New Hampshire quarter and license plate commemorate The Old Man of the Mountain, a formation of ledges in the White Mountains. In profile, the ledges looked exactly like a man. First record of the Old Man was in 1805. He collapsed in May of 2003.

Two hotels were built atop Mount Washington in the mid-1800s. The Summit House and the Tip Top House. Today the 60acre Mount Washington State Park covers the summit. There is a visitor center, cafeteria, museum, and the Mount Washington Observatory for weather observations.

EVERYTHING NEEDS MAZEL The 15th of Av — a true Yom Tov in Nikolsburg! So sang the headlines describing the chasunah which took place in 5776/2010 in the Shul of Nikolsburg on 6 Milton Place in Monsey. I read on. “Throngs of people flocked to the Grand Nikolsburg Shul… where the kabbalas panim took place.” I read the joyous description of the thousands who joined their Rebbe as he married off his son, and I was carried back to years gone by… In the early 1950s, my parents set their eyes on Monsey, a new upand-coming Torah community in what was then an obscure hamlet in Rockland County. We were one of the very few frum families who lived at that time in Fanley Woods/ Ellish Parkway, the area bordering Spring Valley and Monsey. Our home at 6 Milton Place, which cost all of $15,000 (quite a sum in those days), had everything a growing family could ask for. I remember my father, R’ Shmuel Schecter, z”l, hosting Mr. and Mrs. Ellish in our sukkah the first yom tov after we settled in, and proudly showing off its pulley roof, which was a novelty in those days. Living on Milton Place was like living in the country. Our lot was so big that we never even stepped foot on most of the property. Our clothesline was a few yards from the house, and that was as far as our rotary lawn mower went. We looked out at the enormous backyard, but never even contemplated cultivating it. Obviously it was destined for a higher purpose.

In that young, developing area, Jewish babysitters were in high demand and as a pre-teenager, I spent many lucrative years babysitting. While taking pride in having babysat some of today’s gedolim, I also hope I made a good impression on our non-frum neighbors, thereby creating a kiddush Hashem of sorts. Our home saw many distinguished visitors. I remember as a young girl preparing a meal for the Ponevizher Rav, R’ Yosef Kahaneman, z”l. “Laya,” my father called me over, “we have an important guest and Mommy isn’t home. It’s up to you to prepare something for him to eat.” “But Abba,” I pleaded, “I don’t know how to cook! All I know how to make is a fried egg.” “Fine,” my father replied. “So fry an egg.” And sixty years later, I proudly tell my grandsons who are today learning in Ponevezh, “I made a fried egg for the great Rosh Yeshiva and merited to receive his bracha that I would marry a talmid chacham.” Rabbi Dessler, z”l, the Michtav M’Eliyahu, visited our home during

his trips to Monsey to see his family. “How can a chashuve Rosh Yeshiva speak such perfect English?” I wondered. It took me a long time to realize that English was no problem for the Desslers, who had lived in England for many years. And how can I forget the sheva brachos in our home for Ben Zion Shenker, a life-long friend of our family, dating back to the time of my parents’ wedding in 1937? That night, a young and virtually unknown Ben Zion made his public debut, leading his choir and turning an all American wedding into a yeshivishe chasunah. Our move to Monsey was in line with my father’s lifelong practice to always live near a yeshiva. When he returned to America after learning in Mir and Kelm, he became one of the founding members of the first kollel in America, Beth Medrash Govoha, which opened its doors in White Plains, New York. When R’ Aharon Kotler, z”l, came to the United States during the war, the avreichim in White Plains asked him to head their kollel. He agreed, stipulating that he would take the

kollel to Lakewood. And the rest is history... My father’s Litvishe background turned him into a staunch misnaged. But my generation saw the Jewish world changing and much to his surprise, I brought new faces to the family, which today includes Gerrer, Tolna, and Amshinover chasidim, side by side with Yerushalmis and Ponevizhers. Some years ago, I returned to the States for a visit and while in Monsey, revisited the old neighborhood. Things certainly did change, but our house of the 50s was clearly recognizable. There was now a prominent sign above the front window that said “Bais Medrash Birchas Yosef of Nikolsburg.” The big tree was still growing on the front lawn

(although the grass had all but disappeared) and except for the enclosed front porch, the facade of the house remained exactly as I remembered it. When I came home to Eretz Yisroel, I showed my father the picture I had taken of our old house and told him about its new occupants. Despite his Litvishe leaning, he, like I, was very happy to see the house that was originally ours had become a makom of kedushah. Like the famous story of the misnagid who was “blessed” by his adversary, “May your grandchildren be chasidim,” this bracha it seems, not only goes on offspring but on homes as well! So along with the thousands of Nikolsburg chasidim, from my

home far away in E r e t z Yisroel, I too felt in a small way, part of their special simcha. A Whiff of Health Aromatherapy Part 2 The Science While research on the interaction between essential oils and a person’s biological structure is still ongoing, researchers say that the way essential oils interact with a person’s circulatory system, hormones, and/or enzymes can engender powerful healing. Researchers claim that since smell plays a major role in communicating with the emotional parts of our brain (which influences our physical, mental, and emotional health), what we smell can affect how calm and relaxed we are. This, in turn, affects physical symptoms and releases physical distress. We can assume that this explanation is based on the belief that the state of mind affects physical symptoms. Molecules inhaled through the nose or mouth are carried to the lungs and interact with the respiratory system, and can affect the body that way. When applied topically, the active chemicals in essential oils are absorbed just like the ingredients in any other topically applied cream; they activate receptors and destroy microbes, fungi, etc.

Internal applications stimulate a compromised immune system (which is really at the core of many physical ailments). While there’s still a lot of ambiguity in the “how,” proponents of aromatherapy say that the results are what speak.

A Potent Drug Because of their potency, most oils need to be diluted before being applied directly to the skin. Even after dilution, some oils can cause skin or allergic reactions. While allergic reactions to essential oils are somewhat rare, there are welldocumented reports of these reactions. There is also a connection between the oxidation of essential oil components and their ability to trigger allergic reactions. In other words, people may have a reaction to rancorous oils whereas well-preserved, or fresh quality oil (of the same type) won’t elicit that reaction. To rule out the possibility of an allergic reaction, the National Association of Holistic Aromatherapy advises a skin patch test prior to the use of a new essential oil.

Safety First • Individuals with medical condition or with a history of allergies should only use essential oils with a physician’s permission and under the guidance of a trained professional. • Essential oils are very powerful, highly concentrated, and should only be used in very small amounts. Consult with a qualified aromatherapist for exact instructions on dosages and frequency of applications. • Before using an essential oil, familiarize yourself with its properties, methods of application, possible toxicity etc. This information should be made available to you via a package insert. • Use essential oils only for the reason identified on the package label or insert, or as advised by a qualified aromatherapist.

The Frum Aromatherapist A conversation with Mimi, the founder and CEO of Releaf Oil What can you tell me about initiation into the world of aromatherapy? Mimi: I volunteer for the MR Burn Gemach (founded by legendary Mrs. Miriam Rosenfeld to help burns heal naturally and effectively) and people often came to ask me about different health issues. I got to know a child who had terrible breathing difficulties; she was forever short of breath and turning blue in the face. Her parents kept on having to call Hatzolah, and she was very often in and out of the hospital. Perhaps she was asthmatic… Mrs. Rosenfeld advised us to use an oil compress on her chest, and we saw amazing improvement! They were able to wish the ambulance rides and hospital visits goodbye. That’s when I saw the amazing power oils have. Where did you go from there? How did you become educated in aromatherapy? By reading, reading, reading, and then testing my knowledge. When people would ask me for help for a specific issue, I’d suggest that we try something I’d read about, and then get their feedback on it. By now, I’ve done a lot of work with most common issues, so I have a successful track record to look back at. I never stopped learning, though. I’m constantly reading, testing, and broadening my knowledge. Recently, I read about an oil that stabilizes the effects of hormonal imbalances, and I immediately thought of using it for nausea due to hormonal changes. Baruch Hashem, I’ve been able to help many relieve terrible bouts of nausea through it. I find it important to mention that essential oils aren’t a new-fangled fad. They’ve been around forever. There are actual mentions of oils being used as medicine in the Gemara! What type of health issues do you deal with in your capacity as an aromatherapist? Firstly, essential oils can replace many over-thecounter drugs, especially pain-relief drugs. Typical issues I deal with are: migraines, ear infec-

tions, strep, enlarged tonsils, flu, and pneumonia. A good rule of thumb explaining what we use essential oils for are: 1. Immediate relief. I treated a bar mitzvah boy who came down with bronchitis two days before his bar mitzvah. The doctor had prescribed medication that takes five days to kick in. Five days was too long for him to wait! We started the medication, but I did aromatherapy too, so that we could have some relief before the medication kicked in. He was able to be oleh on Shabbos, and completely participate in the simcha. 2. When drugs aren’t available (like flu, for example). Have you had any interactions with the medical field in your capacity as an aromatherapist? I doesn’t happen often, but a mother once asked me for an oil compress for her baby who was hospitalized with pneumonia. The doctor treating her told me that she’d never seen such immediate results in improved oxygen level, and told us to continue the essential oil. Why did you decide to start Releaf Oil, your own brand of essential oils, and how did you do it? When I started out in aromatherapy, I learned that branded essential oils can be very expensive, but aren’t necessarily always better! Of course you’ll find rip-offs, but there are good ones for good prices too. I wanted to bring something effective and affordable to the frum market, so I looked into many different manufacturers and I had a lot of them tested at specialty labs to determine quality. By now, though, I can smell a bottle to detect the quality. Thank you for sharing your time and knowledge. It’s been a pleasure speaking with you. Did My Agent Spill the Beans?

by Ann Zeilingold Rebecca was looking to purchase a co-op. Her agent suggested a mortgage professional. Rebecca told him that she had just consolidated some debt and took a new personal loan that had a monthly cost of $428. After paying the co-op board fee and the appraisal, she was denied her mortgage due to excessive debt, because of the new loan that she had taken out. Her mortgage “professional” said that he had been hoping to close before it hit her credit report, and since it did, she can’t get the mortgage loan. This happened on a Thursday evening. Rebecca called me on Friday, and I confirmed that unless she put more money down or gets a co-signor, she will not qualify for the mortgage loan. We discussed less expensive co-ops and other options. On Sunday morning, Rebecca called me. She had discussed her situation with her parents and they were going to help her by paying off her loan. Her question was whether she qualified now or not. She did qualify. Rebecca then shared a dilemma with me. She really wanted to proceed with the co-op sale, but her realtor had told the seller’s agent that she could not get the loan, which made the seller put the home back on the market. So did her realtor speak out of turn? Was “TMI” shared? Upon my inquiry, different realtors shared different schools of thought. Some felt that they don’t get involved and they say nothing. Others said that they don’t think that it is right to the homeowner to keep a house off the market if the buyers cannot get a loan. One realtor said, “No realtor wants to ruin his reputation with an unqualified buyer.”

Giving wrong information can trigger a client losing a trust in the other party, and possibly having a deal terminated.

Another realtor said that it depends on who represents whom. If the realtor is representing the seller, he feels he need to share the information. If he represents the buyer, he doesn’t feel the same obligation, and the attorneys should deal with the situation. Raphael Berlin of the Berlin Law Firm opined, “Once there is a contract of sale, the buyer should be discussing this with his attorney and the attorney should handle the situation. The home should not be put back on the market for sale until the down payment is returned and the contract is terminated.” He added, “When there’s a contract of sale in place, all parties involved have to be careful when dealing with real estate transactions. Giving wrong information can trigger a client losing a trust in the other party, possibly having a deal terminated, or more severe consequences, where one party can lose their down payment because proper protocols were not adhered to. When purchasing a home, your attorney is there to protect you. This is what you pay him for.”

From the mortgage perspective, if a denial for a mortgage is warranted, our office policy is to send it to the buyer’s attorney and not share this information with any other party except the client. We don’t speak to sellers’ attorneys except if the buyer’s attorney asked us to, usually to clarify a specific point — and even then, I usually prefer to email the buyer’s attorney and for him to forward the email after he has reviewed it. If things get rocky, we are super careful to not discuss anything with the realtors or sellers. What is your opinion? Did the realtor speak out of turn?
