I OWE YOU AN APOLOGY

To The Woman Who Was Walking Behind My Car As I Tried to Back Up in a Crowded Monsey Parking Lot on Erev Shabbos After a Car Pulled Out Suddenly Right in Front of Me (...sound familiar, anyone?): All Shabbos I kept thinking that I owe you an apology. You looked like you must be somebody’s caring bubby, mother, and wife. I saw you walking alongside my car, but didn’t see you turning to cross right behind me. Clearly you must have gotten scared when I started backing up. Although you were already out of the way by the time I looked back, I saw the shock and anger in your eyes and then felt your fist come down hard onto the trunk of my car. I couldn’t find the right words to say after that. I was so taken aback that I forgot to focus on letting you know how sorry I was. I would have explained that I didn’t see you, and that I was in pain after some dental work, and I would have asked your forgiveness for scaring you. I wish I had “danned you lekaf zechus” more quickly and apologized immediately, because when I finally came out to look for you, you were gone, and I didn’t have the opportunity. If you are reading this, please forgive me. Now that Monsey has gotten so much

TO MY DAUGHTER’S DEAR TEACHER,

In the past years, too often, one of the following things happened. Sometimes, teachers come in, after having instructed the students to prepare for a quiz, and “surprise” the students with the wonderful news that they won’t be tested after all. All that an educator is doing at a time like that is rewarding the students who did not prepare for the class and punishing the students who put in effort and time to do her duties. And sometimes, even when a quiz is given, it is never returned, or returned at a point where the girl no longer remembers the info. So I’m asking you, dear teacher, when you set up your system for the new school year, please plan according to your time allowance. If you will not have time to mark quizzes, please do not make the children think that they are being tested;

I can’t wait to try Draizy’s buns that you featured in last week’s food section, and was so happy to read that I can treat my kids to a homecoming that smells this good and tastes this delicious by working under an hour! In the ingredient list was included “milk or milk substitute,” and I’d like to make your readers aware that baking a dairy cake that is generally is made parve is not so simple halachically. The cake has to be baked in a different shape than usual, and/or in a very small amount. Ask your Rav before making your cake milchig. Thank you for your great recipes. A Reader

It was a Tuesday morning like no other. One of my daughters’ day camps would not send a bus to our eight-minutes-out-of-the-area location since parents had been complaining that the bus route is too long. As a result, my husband and I drove her to and from camp every day. One morning, my husband had a meeting that took forty-five minutes longer than it was expected to take. Therefore, he drove our daughter to camp an hour later than usual. Because she would be arriving late, I called the camp to let them know. I thought I was doing them the chesed, when in fact I did myself and my daughter the chesed. While on the phone, the secretary reminded me that the children would be coming home an hour earlier that day. Since I had not received the note, I was unaware of this. I had to rearrange a few things as a result. She also told me that I should pick my daughter up at a different location one upcoming day. The last time the bus dropped the children at a different location they forgot to tell me. I was now doubly grateful that the meeting went late and I had to call the camp.

Becoming

WeighSmarter By Esty Weiss

Positive Affirmations Affirmations are what people tell themselves when they are trying to change their habits or behaviors. A dictionary definition for the word would be, “statements which affirm something to be true.” The theory is that if you say “I am thin,” or “I eat healthy,” 75 times a day, it will become true. When I was introduced to affirmations years ago, I simply went along with the theory. I remember saying certain statements every morning and evening and waiting for that magic shift to happen. Needless to say, it didn’t happen. I was disappointed because whenever I read about it, it seemed like people were so amazed with affirmations, yet I had such a hard time figuring the tool out. Why isn’t it working for me? I asked myself. Then, one day, a figurative light bulb went on in my head, and I thought the following: How in the world can I state affirmations — which are statements that indicate I believe deep down that something is true — when I know deep down that it’s not true? Consciously, I can repeat that I have a million dollars in the bank 500 times, but if it’s not true, then how is it going to turn into something real? I came to the conclusion that it simply didn’t make sense, and that there had to be a more efficient way to repeat affirmations. So here, I would like to go through some “affirmation how-tos,” all of which

Consciously, I can repeat that I have a million dollars in the bank 500 times, but if it’s not true, then how is it going to turn into something real?

I ended up using and found very effective. 1. The purpose of positive affirmations like, “I’m going to lose weight,” is to transfer that command from your conscious mind to your subconscious mind — and your subconscious mind needs to believe it’s true. No statement that you repeat often enough will truly fool your subconscious mind unless you believe in what you’re saying. There’s no fooling yourself, after all. And if you really don’t believe what you’re saying, then what’s the point of repeating the affirmation? The first and most important step is that your statement has got to be true. 2. Affirmations need to trigger your emotions. They need to be so powerful that the words you’re saying should stir up feelings deep inside. You might say to yourself, “I don’t want to be fat,” but are you really generating any positive feelings in doing so? I sincerely doubt it. 3. Affirmations need to be positive and emphasize the present moment. Positive affirmations include statements such as “I want to be slim,” or “I want to be fit,” — you need to state what you want instead of what you don’t want. If you tell yourself that you have a healthy, strong body, if that’s true and you believe it in the present moment, then you are on the right track. However, if it isn’t yet true, then you would be better off say-

Health & Wellness

ing something along the lines of, “I choose to be skinny.” Is that statement true? If so, then your subconscious believes that you are choosing this, and it’s obeying the rule of the present. After all, right now, this is what you’re choosing. When you choose to do something, an honest, powerful statement will trigger the appropriate emotions and inspire actions accordingly. The following is a starter list of affirmations that you can repeat every day, but only if you truly believe in them. Feel free to add your own affirmations as

well: I choose to slim down. I choose to eat mostly healthy foods. I choose to treat myself to small amounts of junk foods. I choose to respect myself. I choose to make time to do some form of exercise on a daily basis. I choose to make time to prepare my own food. I choose to thank Hashem each day for helping me achieve my goals. I choose to live up to what I have decided is good for me. I choose to stay calm and be

easy on myself, even though I may feel like I’ve messed up. I choose to read these affirmations twice each day. I hope that you find these affirmations helpful! Stay tuned for next week’s article, which will feature more than 250 positive words.

Shabbos

Parshas

Ki Seitzei By Malky Aaronson

Shmerel arrived bedraggled and exhausted one evening in the Polish town. “Please,” he begged a passerby. “I’ve been on the road a few days and my food supply is gone. I’ve been without food for almost the whole day, and my hometown is still a day’s travel away. Where can I find a machnis oreich who will give me a warm meal?” The man pointed to a spot at the far corner of the village. “See that little house there? R’ Zelig is always having guests, and he’ll be delighted to host you. Enjoy!” Shmerel nodded his thanks and walked to the corner of the village the man had pointed to. After just one knock, the door opened. “Uh… I’m from a distant village — someone told me I can get food here…” The tall man at the door looked him over for a minute and swiftly said, “Yes, sure. There’s just some work you have to do before you can get your meal. See this room down the hall? It has to be scrubbed down — walls, tables, chairs, floor.” The man led Shmerel toward a closet with cleaning utensils and told him to help himself. Shmerel sighed. Just a little bit more and he’d get food… Shmerel scrubbed and attacked every speck of dirt. He got down on his hands and knees and scrubbed the floor corners. Just let his host approve of his

52 / T HE MONS E Y V IE W

work so he can get his food. Two backbreaking hours later, the room shone. His host swept his gaze around the room and nodded. “Now you see the cottage there?” he showed him from the window. “Just a few feet down from here. Go there and you’ll get your meal.” Shmerel plodded out and eagerly knocked on the cottage door. “Um… is this where I can get my meal?” “Yes, yes!” a red-bearded fellow said. “Come in! A gast in shtut!” Shmerel followed the host to a large room filled with people sitting and dining. Finally. He got himself a seat and waited. A few minutes later, he was dunking fresh, warm bread in a thick soup. Shmerel turned to the skinny man on his left. “Tell me, where did you work?” “What?” “Where did you work? Did you clean a room in the next cottage like I did, or…” “Work? I don’t know what you’re talking about. This is hachnosas orchim here. I just came and got food.” Shmerel blanched. He just came and got a meal? Oh, what he wouldn’t have done for that miracle! He rubbed his sore palms. He had worked for two hours for this meal! Shmerel had to figure out the

riddle. Why did he have to work and the other fellow didn’t? When he finished his soup, he stopped the host, who was carrying full plates of steaming dishes into the dining room. “Tell me, please. Do some guests have to work before they get a meal and others don’t?” “Work?” “Yes, work! I scrubbed down a dusty room now for two hours in the next cottage, and then I was told I could come get my meal.” The host narrowed his brows. “The cottage to the left? Oy! You knocked on the wrong door and my neighbor took advantage of you and gave you work to do. Then he sent you here. Cleaning the room has nothing to do with this meal — you’d have been hosted happily right away if you’d have knocked here!”* The Torah forbids taking ribbis — interest — when extending a loan. The Kli Yakar offers an interesting reasoning for this prohibition. One who works for a living realizes he is in Hashem’s hands and davens for his success and livelihood. One who takes interest on loans feels secure — his money is doing the work for him. He doesn’t feel the need to beseech Hashem for a good parnassa — he has money and it’s reaping the dividends for him. And that is not the Yid’s way. A

Hilchos Shabbos Yid always knows where his parnassa is coming from. It’s not the work that gives us parnassa — it is Hashem’s benevolence that sustains us. Rabbi Leibel Schwartz shares: The Gulf War was raging in the center of Eretz Yisroel, scuds falling all around. I quickly got my family out of Bnei Brak and we rented an apartment in Yerushalayim. I’m a real estate broker and I have an office on Rabbi Akiva Street in Bnei Brak. We didn’t know how long the war would last, and all I could think about was how I would swing this financially. My work was exclusively Bnei-Brakbased, and I couldn’t do any business in Yerushalayim. One day, after three weeks of renting in Yerushalayim, I traveled to my office in Bnei Brak because a quick technical matter that had to be taken care of. I was in my office two minutes, put together the mail I had to send, and was about to leave. Bnei Brak was a danger zone, and I was anxious to get out and on the road to Yerushalayim. I walked to the door at the precise minute that it opened. A young woman walked in, a kallah soon to be married who was looking for an apartment to purchase. I offered her something, she went to see it, and within half an hour, she signed the contract and paid me. I earned more than I usually made in three weeks. In a few minutes, I made enough money to tide us over for the duration of the war. I thought I had to sit at work to make a living; no, I just had to open my hands. Let’s not be Shmerel, who sweats and toils, thinking that he is earning his meal. Work is in a separate, unrelated category. We are fed daily, for free, by the ultimate Machnis Orchim.

Q&A

One Halachah at a Time By Rebbetzin Y. Weissmandl

The following are some additional halachos pertaining to previously discussed halachos. • On Shabbos It is assur to use toothpicks or skewers to connect different colored fruits or vegetables for decorative purposes. • One may smear butter, cream cheese, or spreads on a slice of bread, or smear cream onto a cake on Shabbos. However, one may not draw designs on the spread with a utensil. It is muttar to draw a line on the spread in order to mark where one wants to cut into the bread…. • One may not use a cookie cutter or stencil to make shapes out of fruits or cookies etc. because of the issur of boneh. • One may not use a decorating nozzle with a tip to pipe cream onto a cake on Shabbos. One may, however, use a nozzle that pushes the cream out of the decorating bag but doesn’t shape it into specific designs. • It is assur to beat egg whites into a snow, even a not firm snow, with a fork or other utensil, because of molid. • One may not use the ready spray whip because of molid (it only becomes whipped whilst it is being released from the can). It could also be boneh. • It is muttar to put alka seltzer, even flavored, into water on Shabbos. It is not considered molid. • It is assur to use any form of a scale to weigh foods on Shabbos because of uvda d’chol. However, one may use a measuring cup or spoon in order to measure food for children, elderly, or sick people on Shabbos, or, to prepare baby formula. However, one may not measure ingredients for the preparation of foods on Shabbos (such as measuring salt, sugar, oil, etc.).

• It is assur to separate raw eggs on Shabbos in order to add the yolks or whites to drinks, because of borer. • It is muttar to use a knife or scissors to open up a mesh bag in order to use the food within. Because the food cannot be eaten while it is still closed, opening the bag is considered derech achila. However, one should take precautions not to cut into letters, as was explained in a previous article, and also not to turn the package of the food into a keli, as will be explained in a future article. • Although there is no tzovaya when mixing color into foods or drinks for the purposes of taste, if one’s intention is to color the food, the issur of tzovaya does apply. Based on the above, one may add tea or coffee into water or drinks on Shabbos, because one only wants the taste, but one may not add coloring into food or drinks on Shabbos. • One may not add jello into fruit salad or compote on Shabbos for the purpose of coloring. • There are differences of opinion with regards to adding Kool-Aid into water on Shabbos, because Kool-Aid contains both coloring and flavor, and both are desirable. Therefore, one should first put the Kool-Aid into the keli, and then add the water so that when the water comes into the cup it immediately becomes colored. • There is a midas chasidus to first put the coffee or tea into the keli and then add the water. However, this is not a halacha. • On Pesach, if one wants to color the wine red, one should first pour the dark wine, and then add the light wine.

Shopping: It’s one of those things that some women anticipate and others dread. But one thing is certain: Everyone has to do it. Revamping one’s wardrobe can be a challenge, unless it’s done where the experts are. Whether shopping for casual weekday clothes or simcha wear, that designer touch is found at one place: Mom 2 Be. Honestly, Esther freaks me out during our first conversation. “You’re a thin person,” she tells me. Huh? How on Earth’s surface does she know my size? We never met, never exchanged photos, and I definitely hadn’t offered this information. Esther laughs. “I hear it in your voice.” Now I don’t have a delicate or squeaky voice, not at all. I think my voice is quite ordinary and regularly pitched. But that’s Esther, I discover. She has women figured out to a science, from their posture to their distinctive fashion preferences. For expectant moms, this talent means everything. Clothing manufacturing was the bread and butter of Esther Steinberg’s upbringing. Fashion styles and fabric swatches were woven into her bedtime stories, as her mother pioneered the trend of

56

robes for heimishe women worldwide. From youth, Esther developed and refined her taste in clothing — a taste that garnered much acclaim over the ensuing decades. And yet, while tznius clothing was already in great supply, Esther recognized a demand for pretty and practical maternity wear. Thus, she launched Mom 2 Be, a maternity clothing boutique that redefined maternity wear for Monsey women. It’s been 15 years, and Mom 2 Be has earned a reputation as the ideal place to shop for maternity wear. Quality and fit are top priorities at Mom 2 Be, and customers are confident that they will be guided in making the perfect purchase choices. The talented saleswomen at Mom 2 Be know how to discern different customers’ tastes and needs, and they provide incredible service to ensure customer satisfaction. Always.

nity line, and customers are always ecstatic with the results. For a woman who struggles to find properly fitting clothing, Mom 2 Be steps right up to the challenge. Custom fitting is Mom 2 Be’s claim to fame, and no size is too difficult for Mom 2 Be to handle.

Store Stories Success stories happen every day at Mom 2 Be. Hesitant women enter and look around, eventually leaving the store with bulging bags in their hands and huge smiles on their faces. But the most incredible stories are hardly about clothing. They are about people. It was at the end of a long day in the shop, and Esther was getting ready to leave the Atrium Plaza when a frantic woman and her sixteen-year-old daughter walked in. The girl was in tears. They were about to enter the Atrium wedding hall when the zipper on her dress burst open. What should they do?! Esther went over to a seamstress next door, picked up a needle and thread, and neatly stitched the zipper back in place. The woman and girl were ecstatic and asked Esther how much they owed her for this incredible service. Esther waved them off, declining payment. Instead, she davened to Hakadosh Baruch Hu that this favor be a z’chus for a personal challenge she was experiencing. Her son was

due to start yeshiva in two days and still hadn’t found a place to dorm. The very next day, he found that place. Esther says, “My business isn’t about clothing, about buying and selling. It’s about people, and I care about them, whether or not they’re my customers.” Being in the maternity clothing line, Esther says that nothing compares with dealing with this unique customer base. She feels like she’s serving generations at Mom 2 Be, and the experience warms her heart every time anew. A woman married for several years once expressed her pain to Esther; her longing to shop at Mom 2 Be. Esther, who laughs and says that she is certainly no mekubel, warmly blessed her to become her customer very soon. And she did!

Modesty is the highest form of elegance.

Looking good shouldn’t come at the expense of tznius. Mom 2 Be devotes great focus to ensure that our line of clothing meets all gidrei tznius, so a woman is able to look beautiful and refined at the same time.

It’s been 15 years, and Mom 2 Be has earned a reputation as the ideal place to shop for maternity wear. Quality and fit are top priorities at Mom 2 Be. 58

A seventeen-year-old yeshiva student passed away on September 7th as he waited with a friend to be picked up outside of his yeshiva. Marcos Tawil, a student at Yeshiva Tiferet Torah in Suffern, was struck by a car driven by off-duty Peekskill police officer Jonathan Mosquero at approximately 11:50 PM. Mosquero, a 24-year-old resident of Suffern, crossed the double yellow line on Route 202 to pass a vehicle in front of him that had slowed down when the accident occurred. Lieutenant Mark Emma of the Ramapo Police Department said that the two cars sideswiped each other, with Mosquero’s car crossing Route 202 and hitting both Tawil and nineteen-year-old David Maldonado. The funeral for Tawil took place on Thursday afternoon at the ye-

Fifteen years after the devastating terror attack that stunned the world, Rockland County residents joined together to remember those who died on September 11th, 2001. The one-hour-long commemoration took place at the county’s 9/11 memorial at Haverstraw Bay County Park overlooking the Hudson River and included moments of silence at 8:46 AM and 9:03 AM to mark the moment when planes struck each of the Twin Towers. County Executive Ed Day said that the victims live on in the hearts and minds of all Americans. “Their tragic deaths unified the nation against terrorism, against hatred,” said Day.

shiva and his body was flown home to Argentina for burial. Maldonado remains in serious condition at Westchester County Medical Center. Route 202 was shut down completely between Wilder Road and Lime Kiln Road for hours as police conducted their investigation. No charges have been filed at this time and both drivers involved in the accident passed on-scene sobriety tests. Two other people have died in crashes on Route 202 over the last nine months, and Lieutenant Emma described the highway as the most dangerous road in Ramapo. “The speed limit is 50 miles per hour on much of the road,” said Lieutenant Emma. “It is dark, has no shoulders, and no escape route for a car. It is a tough road.” (VIN News)

Among the 81 Rockland County residents who lost their lives on 9/11 was 40-year-old Eliyahu Furman of Wesley Hills. The father of five was a broker at Cantor Fitzgerald and was known for his generosity. “He didn’t have a fancy house or a fancy car,” said one relative. “The more money he had, the more money he gave away.” His father, Marvin Furman, said that his son would happily drive neighbors on errands and had paid the schooling expenses for one young man, and bought a suit for another. “His family, his religion, the people in his community — that was his life,” said Marvin Furman. IT’S SO CLOSE TO HOME

Last week’s Parsha discussed the instance of an unsolved murder that takes place outside of city limits and the community’s requirement to perform the ritual of Eglah Arufah. When a person is found murdered in no man’s land and it is not known who has killed him, the people are to measure the distance of the corpse from the surrounding cities, and the nearest one is held accountable. The Sanhedrin members of that city are required to take a calf that has not yet been used for labor and has not yet drawn a load with a yoke, and bring it to a barren field. There, the calf is decapitated, and the Kohanim in attendance say, “Yadeinu lo shifchu es hadam hazeh,” affirming that the blood of the murdered is not on their hands. They continue and say, “Kapeir al amcha Yisroel; atone for Your people.” Rashi asks the question: Are the Sanhedrin murderers? Why do they have to state that they did not kill the deceased? Rashi answers the question by explaining that the Sanhedrin is required to vow that they’d escorted the traveler and given him food — a segulah for protection — when he left their city. But yet, it’s hard to understand that if their hands were untainted by this crime, why do they have to have to daven for atonement? They didn’t do anything wrong! In Rav Koppelman’s yeshiva, absolutely nothing was done without his consent. The Rav could always be found in Bais Medrash, and every concern came to him. One of the talmidim once broke the only telephone in the yeshiva, and when it came to fixing it, Rav Koppelman did not allow for them to restore the service. “Do we all have to suffer because of one boy’s wrongdoing?” the students complained. “Why are we being punished by being unable to call home?” Rav Koppelman explained, “If the bachurim in the yeshiva would have sincerely been horrified over someone vandalizing the yeshiva’s property, this would never have occurred. The fact that everyone allowed this to happen shows that each of you is at fault.” And that is what the Ibn Ezra explains: If the townspeople would have not done some sort of wrong akin to retzicha, the murder would not have happened close to their city. If a wrongdoing is committed in a specific area — everyone in that locale has some measure of blame. In the past few weeks, Monsey has seen so many tragedies. Not outside our city, not in the outskirts, but in the very center of our home town, where young and beautiful lives have ended under the most tragic circumstances. If it happened in our town, it is a message to each of us.

If a wrongdoing is committed in a specific area — everyone in that locale has some measure of blame.

Now in Elul, in this time of reckoning, we have to analyze our deeds, our bein adam lachaveiro; specifically in regards to the care and energy we must invest to avoid hurting or embarrassing others, which are akin to murder. It is a time to think about anything hurtful, intended or otherwise, that we tend to do or say. It is a time to think about whether our hands are completely untainted or if there may be blood spilled upon them. Think: Did my bad deeds somehow contribute to these tragedies? Seeing the power of a bad word, of a lack of ahavas Yisroel and their tragic effects, should embolden us to take the opposite road, to go out of our way to do chesed. To make someone’s day with a kind word. To spread warmth and kindness; for the power of a good deed and chesed will surely bring only good upon us and our community. May we start the new year with only good. .‫תחל שנה וברכותיה‬ As heard from Reb Moshe Kizelnik

In her mind’s eye, upon her arrival at the airport, she would find myriads of cars and vans begging passengers to come ride with them. “Monsey, Monsey,” a man with a round stomach and hands calloused from schlepping so many travel cases would yell. “Monsey,” she’d say, and she’d duck her head to climb into the monit, for which she had prepared $40, just in case it cost that much. She would sit among the others traveling to Monsey, clutching the address of Gella Kahn, looking out the window… There were no drivers. No taxis. She walked outside. The wind was a merciless bully, shoving itself into her face, whipping at her clothes, licking her face, her nose with frost. Was she at the wrong door? Others had taken the stairs to a floor below. When she checked it out, she found it was a parking lot. Did everyone bring their own cars here? Were there no taxis? How would she get to Monsey? The airport was quite empty.

The passengers that had come on her flight were gone. That woman, that woman who refused to let her believe she would earn food for her children by collecting in America, where was she? Had she, too, taken her car from the downstairs garage and just left? Were there other doors? It seemed the airport had spit her out in some bereft, cemented corner of the earth. When she tried to retrace her steps, she could no longer enter the place she had come from. Hardly any cars came. Once in a while, a pair of headlights pulled up to the airport, and a person would get in. She tried her Hebrew on some of the passengers, but what was the use? Dispassionately, they looked at her, some of them not even responding but keeping their eyes trained on the farthest spot they could find, which was not too far, given the cement, the closed-in dank surroundings she found herself interacting with these strangers in. There was one kiosk, selling

glossy paperbacks and garish magazines and treif sweets. She hadn’t eaten for hours, but she was fine, because she had eaten something. The plane was more generous than she herself could ever afford to be. Then again, she had given them over $450 for that one ride. And where did it take her to? Inside was warm. She searched for an entrance back in, because the door that spits out is not the same as an entrance. Once inside, she looked out, desperately. She saw a road and an overhang, and cars, more and more cars, all sitting in the grayness of the snow, and basking in a deep orange light that shone on their hoods. There was no use in breaking down, no use in spilling the tears that sat just below her eyelids. This was America. A dark, cold place. Her dimes. She stuffed them into the payphone standing at the side. Many people, all kinds of people, people the likes of whom she had never encountered until

these short few minutes she’d stood there, had probably used the phone. She kept it far from her ear, and dialed. “Is this at Mishpachat Kahn?” “One minute,” a young voice said. She waited. The coin clicked and dislodged, leaving her with a dial tone. She tried again, removing another round silver coin from the eight that she had brought with her. “Is this at Mishpachat Kahn?” “Speaking.” “This is Malka’la. Malka’la Goldreb. I don’t have a car. I thought I’d find one at the airport.” “Oh!” “And I’m not sure how to get to you.” “Oh!” “I thought there would be moniot waiting here, but I don’t see any.” “Oh!” “I’m waiting here in the arrivals hall. I landed about two hours ago.” “Oh. Oy. Oh. Are you in Newark?” “I think so. I think so.” “Read your ticket to me.” Malka’la searched the ticket for clues. “I’ll send someone for you. Sit tight. It’s the coldest day of the year. Stay warm. I’m sending someone.” She didn’t know, Malka’la, that the airport was far, and that traffic was dense, and that the snow had ground traffic to an impossible crawl, and only the

And how could Malka’la know that Gella Kahn called her divorced son and begged him to pick Malka’la up, but he refused, of course. He couldn’t go out in this weather — “Why didn’t she order a car? What was she thinking? I’m afraid she’s staying there overnight, until the roads are cleared.” Gella told him that she would make him his favorite supper, “Even a dog I wouldn’t send out tonight, to pick up a biendel.” She asked him that he should please, please, because if not, she had to go do it, but the weather was

really not for her to drive. He told her he wasn’t up to it, he had a busy day at work, and wasn’t there someone who was anyway coming— “Please, Heshy.” So it took time until he started his car (and not before brewing a coffee), and the way was dense, and he wasn’t excited to be picking up a schnorrer. Why did his mother think she had to fill the guest room, all the time, with all sorts of interesting, rather scary characters? And now — the room would be taken for as long as this woman collected, which meant, where would he and his children sleep on visitation weeks? Malka’la waited. She went outside to peer down the road that wound into the airport, and waited. Her breaths were visible solids, puffs of air, a stream of icicles entering her lungs. It started to hail. Then snow again. The snow was magical. The sun had gone down, yet the world, under the cement

with an anxious pit in her stomach, waiting for the trip, but not yet gone! From her children! So far away. She would still be with them, instead of here. She sat near her valise, in the bench facing forward. Every minute or two, the doors swung open automatically, and a burst of ice rushed through. Her toes were frozen. Her nostrils ached from frigid air. She didn’t even notice when Heshy arrived. She had gone inward, to a place of wishes and regret, a place protected from the endless, unbearable now. But he honked loud and insistent, and she looked up, and there was a huntergreen Buick, with silver handles like he was picking up the queen, and in the front, a Yid. A man with

a beard and peyos. A velvet kappel on his head. “Are you… from Kahn?” “Kahn, yes, I’m Kahn.” He pointed to her suitcase. “Is this all?” She nodded. She hoisted it in stiff fingers. He went to the rear and lifted the back door for her. How nice. She picked her valise to put it in the back, while noticing that he would have done it, had she not rushed to do it herself. He was treating her with the dignity allotted to women. But she wasn’t one. She had long ago, when losing the duties of wife, learned to be self-sufficient, a provider. He opened the back door for her, and then went around to the driver’s seat, seating himself quickly. She stepped one frozen foot into the car, then another foot. Her toes were arrows, fire and gunpowder lighting them from within. The car was dressed in leather; the air inside was toast. She sat into her seat, more comfortable than any sofa she had ever tried. “Welcome to America,” he said. She nodded in response. He wasn’t anything to her, and still he was her benefactor. “How much will it be, for the ride?” “Nothing, no money,” he said. To be continued... The Flavors of the Season

By Miriam Paskes

FOR A SWEET NEW YEAR

The warm, deep flavors of honey and cinnamon complement each other beautifully, and each of these recipes takes advantage of the combination, to bring you the season’s favorite flavors.

FAMILY-SIZE HONEY CAKE

This cake has a delicious moist flavor. 1. Preheat oven to 350°.

10 eggs, separated 3 cups sugar 4 tsp. coffee, diluted in one cup water 1/2 tsp. baking soda

1 cup honey 2 T. cocoa 3/4 cup oil 2 tsp. cinnamon 4 cups flour

2. Make a snow with the eggs and sugar, and beat until peaks form. 3. Slowly add the rest of the ingredients. 4. Pour batter into a 10x16” pan. 5. Bake for 1 hour and 5 minutes. Check for doneness.

Seasoned chef: Use the measuring cup to measure the oil right before you measure the honey, so that the honey slides out easily.

Seasoned chef: There are two sizes of 10x16” pans, one that has straight walls and one with scalloped walls. Use the pan with scalloped walls. If you are using the pan with straight walls, which is a little bit smaller, then put some batter over into a 5x7 pan.

HONEY COOKIES

Soft and fluffy, these cookies will be a favorite for this season, and a winner all year round!

6 eggs 6 cups flour 2 cups sugar 1½ tsp. cinnamon 1 tsp. baking powder 1 tsp. baking soda 1 cup oil 1/2 cup honey

1. Mix all ingredients. 2. Refrigerate for 3 hours or overnight. 3. Preheat oven to 350°. 4. Using a scoop, place 12 big balls on each cookie sheet. 5. Bake for 15–20 minutes.

Seasoned chef: Since this is a sticky dough to work with, when forming the cookies, remove only half of the batter at a time from the refrigerator.

FOREIGN POLICY FORUM On Wednesday, September 7th, both Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump participated in a town-hallstyle foreign policy forum which took place on the Intrepid. and praising Russian President Vladimir Putin, Hillary did not manage to come out looking like the obvious winner. She spent about a third of her time defending her use of a private email server for classified information (a subject she most wants to avoid), and also vowed not to use ground troops against ISIS. This may come across as an unwillingness to go the full length to protect the country, especially afPOLLS

ter she admitted that defeating ISIS would be a “huge challenge” for the next president. This was an interesting precursor to the upcoming debates (the first one is scheduled to take place on September 26th in Hofstra Uni-

versity on Long Island). Hillary is not considered a strong debater but is obviously much better versed in both domestic and foreign policy than Trump. During the primaries, Trump had both good and bad debates. His weakness, of course, is on substance, but his strength is attacking his opponent ceaselessly, which is his best strategy for winning against Clinton. Going into the debates, both campaigns will be playing down expectations, hoping their candidates will exceed them and gain more voter support.

HILLARY’S HEALTH CONCERNS This past Sunday, September 11th, both Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump attended the memorial service held at the World Trade Center in the early morning hours. But unlike Trump, Hillary left the service early without informing the press. Images and footage later released showed her first walking while supporting herself on the arm of a staffer and then later collapsing completely while trying to get into her van. She was bodily lifted and placed in her van by her Secret Service detail. She was taken to her daughter Chelsea’s apartment which is in Manhattan. The footage was captured by civilian bystanders, not the press.

About an hour and a half later, she emerged, waving to gathered reporters and crowds and responding to inquires said she was feeling great. Her team’s initial response was that she was “overheated.” Many quickly pointed out that temperatures in NY that day had not topped 80 and it was a beautiful and breezy day. Several hours later her personal physician, Dr. Lisa R. Bardack, released the following statement: “Secretary Clinton has been experiencing a cough related to allergies. On Friday, during follow-up evaluation of her prolonged cough, she was diagnosed with pneumonia. She was put on antibiotics, and advised to rest and

modify her schedule. While at this morning’s event, she became overheated and dehydrated. I have just examined her and she is now rehydrated and recovering nicely.” Over the past few weeks, there had been several incidents in which Hillary had had a strong coughing attack and there were many who questioned if she was fit enough to be president. It also led to conspiracy theorists speculating to all kinds of diseases she might possibly have. Her team’s answer to that has been that the coughing was stemming from seasonal allergies. This new diagnosis of a pneumonia is not damning in and of itself. It is fairly common, especially

for someone who has been flying on airplanes frequently and has been exposed to germs. The problem her team now has goes back to the issue of trustworthiness. If she was diagnosed with pneumonia on Friday, why was their initial reaction to the incident on Sunday to cover it up? Why not be forthcoming with the information that would explain their nominee’s physical ailments? By once again lying to the public and spinning the story, they have again led the public to doubt them. It proved once more that for Team Hillary, the default mode is to lie. And that might prove harder to recover from than any illness she has.

SUPER BY: RUCHY REESE

In recent weeks, you’ve surely heard talk of MRSA around town. It seems that nearly everyone knows someone who’s been affected with the dreaded infection — but what most don’t know is how MRSA came to be, or what exactly sets it apart from other infections.

92 / T HE MONS E Y V IE W

Short for “Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus,” MRSA is the widely feared bacterial infection that often requires aggressive treatment to prevent severe illness and even fatalities, ch”v. It is a relatively new phenomenon, with the first case of MRSA being reported in 1968 — a short 48 years

TO KILL THE

RBUG ago. For roughly 20 years prior to this time, the Staphylococcus aureus bacterium (staph, for short) was successfully treated with the newly invented penicillin. Throughout the 40s and 50s, however, staph became increasingly resistant to penicillin, pushing scientists to create a synthetic, modified version

of the antibiotic that would be able to tackle the misbehaving bug. For a while it worked, but eventually, specific strains of staph became stronger, and overcame even the newer form of medication. In 1961, the first strains of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus were identified, and MRSA was born.

T H E M O N SE Y V I E W /

93

TYPES OF MRSA It comes as a surprise to many laymen that MRSA is actually not a single type of antibiotic-resistant bacterium. Over seventeen strains of MRSA have been identified to date, with each type falling into two main categories: • Healthcare-Associated (HA) MRSA, which is found mostly among hospital patients and residents in healthcare facilities. • Community-Associated (CA) MRSA, which occurs among people in the general populace. While anyone can acquire CAMRSA given the right circumstances, HA-MRSA is not commonly circulated outside of long-term care facilities. And that’s something to be thankful for. While CA-MRSA often appears as a pimple or boil, and runs the possibility of entering the bloodstream in a life-threatening manner, HAMRSA is notable for directly infecting the blood or organs such as the heart or lungs, and being significantly more difficult to treat. Sadly, MRSA affects approximately 94,000 Americans per year, with roughly 19,000 cases of death — about 86% of those fatalities being from HA-MRSA. While most forms of CA-MRSA can be treated with antibiotics such as Bactrim, Clindamycin, or Doxycycline, HA-MRSA is usually treated right away with the “last-resort” drug Vancomycin, in the hopes that — like its name implies — the MRSA infection will be vanquished. The great news is that recent years have seen a serious decrease in the number of both HA- and CA-MRSA infections, perhaps due community awareness and properly enforced precautionary steps. WHAT WILL THE FUTURE BRING? Despite the fantastic news that the MRSA-related death-toll has decreased, the future of antibiotics is not all opti-

mistic. MRSA has been increasingly becoming resistant to additional antibiotics, with a 2002 strain even proving to be unaffected by Vancomycin. Baruch Hashem, Vancomycin-resistant strains are still rare to come by, and the drug is most often successful with treating MRSA infected individuals. But, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, it is not only MRSA that we have to worry about; all bacterial infections are slowly becoming unresponsive to treatment with antibiotics. Why is this? While there are no solid answers found by man, speculation largely comes down to two factors: 1.

Inappropriate use of antibiotics:

For many, the first tingle of a sore throat sends them racing to the medicine cabinet in search of leftover antibiotics from previous prescriptions. It is, after all, cheaper and/or less time-consuming than heading to their doctor’s office. The problem with this, however, is two-fold: Not all sore-throats, aches, or pains require antibiotics. Some ailments are entirely viral, and cannot be resolved with antibiotic use — even if it feels “just like strep.” The other problem lies within the fact that many people use antibiotic medication just until the point when their symptoms resolve. While they may SUPERBUG: A STRAIN feel better, and OF BACTERIA most of the bacteria THAT HAS BECOME may be wiped-out, there might still RESISTANT TO remain some extraANTIBIOTIC DRUGS. hardy bacteria that can only be killed through a full cycle of antibiotic use. sturdy bacteria build up immunity against the medication that, theoretically, should be able to kill them. 2. Constant Exposure to Antibiotics Bacteria is everywhere, on every surface, and normally, causes no harm to people. In fact, many strains of bacteria are healthy, and shape the lives of human beings for the better. Good bacteria, like lactobacillus acidophilus (commonly found in yogurt), create strong gut flora, and enable us to fight chronic illnesses, overcome certain types of infections, and even promote mental health. Only when bad bacteria wage war on the human body and lead to uncontrolled infection are antibiotics recommended. Sadly, however, we are exposed to antibiotics more often than we should be. Living in the era of Big Business, everyone is out to make money. That includes most farmers. In the pursuit of a buck, many farmers raise huge amounts of livestock in unbearably close quarters among squalid conditions that breed disease — infectious diseases like MRSA. To combat these infections that would naturally run rampant among animals living in such horrid conditions, farmers try to circumvent infection by injecting livestock with large and frequent amounts of antibiotics, and giving them feed laced with the drugs. These drugs are being used to prevent and not even treat illness, causing even healthy, non-infected animals to receive daily antibiotics. What’s more, antibiotics are even given simply because animals have been proven to gain more weight when taking them. Imagine if you were to take antibiotics every day; do you think they would have any effect when actually needed? “It’s like watching the birth of a superbug,” says Lance Price, a researcher based in Arizona. “I couldn’t engineer a better system for creating drug-resistant bacteria or a superbug than introducing antibiotics into a concentrated feeding opera-

tion. It’s begging for disaster.” Common strains of MRSA have been found to jump between human handlers, their livestock, and back again — and by the time it returns to human beings, the MRSA has already become resistant to the medication that could have treated it. Not only that, but traces of both MRSA and antibiotics are becoming more and more frequently found within cuts of meat — both exposing consumers to dangerous bacteria, and slowly building up unnecessary antibiotics within our bodies. This dangerous practice of pumping livestock full of antibiotics has been outlawed MRSA IS ACTUALLY since 2006 in EuRESISTANT TO ALL ropean countries, PENICILLIN-LIKE but America is lagANTIBIOTICS CALLED ging behind, with only one class of “BETA-LACTAMS.” antibiotics being prohibited from use in fowl and and certain non-kosher creatures since 2012. As of yet, there is no prohibition against using antibiotics on larger livestock, nor with using drugs from classes not considered illegal for use — though the FDA claims to be hard at work creating new regulations for antibiotic use in livestock.

ONE FOOT FORWARD Putting forth our best effort as individuals to prevent these terrible strains of MRSA from spreading around our community comes down to a multi-step plan that includes knowledge of the symptoms, knowing when to seek treatment, where to seek treatment, and how to prevent spread of disease. Also, consider buying only meats from a reputable kosher company that raises their animals in free-range and antibiotic-free conditions. To find out more details of how to put our community’s best foot forward in the effort to kill the MRSA superbug, just keep the flipping the pages. It’s all here in our three-panel discussion with Monsey’s MRSA experts.

of Refuah Health Center

Doctor of Alternative Medicine

On Recognizing and Treating MRSA

On Healing MRSA Naturally

How is MRSA spread? MRSA, like all staph bacteria, can be spread from one person to another through casual contact or through contaminated objects. It is commonly spread from the hands of someone who has MRSA. It is usually not spread through the air like the common cold or flu virus, unless a person has MRSA pneumonia and is coughing. In the past, MRSA infected people who had chronic illnesses, but now MRSA has become more common in healthy people. These infections can occur among people who have scratches, cuts, or wounds and who have close contact with one another — such as kids in a classroom setting.

Can you tell us about how you treat MRSA? Let me tell you a story: A yungerman who learns with bochurim went to visit one of his talmidim, who had a very severe case of MRSA, and was hospitalized. It just kept on spreading and there was big talk of amputation, chas v’shalom. The doctors stuffed him with antibiotics, yet to no avail. The MRSA persisted. After exiting the ER, the yungerman didn’t sterilize his hands, and after a week, he became a victim, too. He found a MRSA pimple on his leg. Baruch Hashem, the infection was caught at the beginning stage, and when he contacted me, I recommended NEWNUTRIC ANTI-MRSA. The NEWNUTRIC ANTI-MRSA solution is made of herbs which have natural antibiotic properties to which the MRSA bacteria has no defense. This product is also an anti-inflammatory

What are the symptoms of MRSA? Symptoms of a MRSA infection depend on where the infection is. If MRSA is causing an infection in a wound, that

THE MR WOUND GEMACH On Drawing Out The Infection

Tell us a little about the gemach. How did it get started? The gemach was founded by Miriam Rosenfeld a”h. She learned the healing techniques from Chaya Green in Yerushalayim, who learned them from a Bucharian doctor. From there, they taught others, and we are here to continue her legacy in helping the community. How does the Wound Gemach help people who have MRSA? The treatment really depends on the area; there are some areas that can be dangerous and one must be very careful. The first question I ask is where the MRSA infection has occurred. Most of MRSA is treatable, but sometimes I will look at the wound and send the person straight to the hospital. Even when treating at home, you really have to keep an eye on the area, because MRSA can

area of your skin may be red or tender with pus. MRSA looks like other skin infections and can’t be distinguished from a typical staph infection without taking a culture. In general, staph infections create pus and grow slower than other skin infections. Other skin infections progress quickly with redness, pain, swelling etc., but lack pus. Community-Associated MRSA commonly causes skin infections, such as boils, abscesses, or cellulitis. Often, people think they have been bitten by a spider or insect. Because MRSA infections can become serious in a short amount of time, it is important to see your doctor right away if you notice a boil or other skin problem.

to keep the inflamed area under control, and helps for quick skin epithelialization (repairing the sore skin). Back to the story: Excited that he triumphed over this nasty infection, he went to visit his still hospitalized talmid. This time, he came prepared, swinging a bag with the ANTI-MRSA drops. The rest, as they say, is history. The talmid started taking the drops and applied it as a compress on the infected area overnight. Within four days, the red, irritated area of skin on his leg shrunk, and the MRSA vanished B”H! Can all MRSA be healed with the NEWNUTRIC ANTI-MRSA drops? Sometimes the MRSA reaches such deep tissues, and the pus is extremely hard to drain. In such cases, leeches help astoundingly. In addition to draining the wound, the

travel. That being said, the treatment I find most effective in alleviating MRSA is the ichthammol ointment, alternating with warm compresses of black tea mixed with a little salt. (There is also something new called PRID, which I have never used, but other practitioners have, with very good results.) What is the cream made from and how do you use it? Ichthammol is made from a sedimentary rock called shale. It is refined and mixed with various ingredients and has the ability to draw out objects like pus from the skin. It’s very hard to get a hold of this cream; locally, only CVS pharmacies carry it, although it can be ordered elsewhere. It isn’t cheap, but it works very well, and people can use it at home. If you don’t have ichthammol, you can use

How is an infection diagnosed? If your doctor suspects that you are infected with MRSA, he or she will send a sample of your infected wound, blood, or urine to a lab. The lab will grow the bacteria and then test to see which kinds of antibiotics kill the bacteria. This test may take several days. You may also be tested if your doctor suspects that you are a MRSA carrier. A carrier is a person who has the bacteria living on the skin and in the nose, but who is not sick. The test is done by taking a swab from the inside of the nose.

How is an infection treated? Depending on how serious your infection is, the doctor may drain your wound, prescribe antibiotic medicine, give you an IV (intravenous) antibiotic, or hospitalize you. If you have a MRSA infection and need to be in a hospital, you may be isolated in a private room to reduce the chances of spreading the bacteria to others. When your doctors and nurses are caring for you, they may use extra precautions such as wearing gloves and gowns. If you have MRSA pneumonia, they may also wear masks. Most cases of MRSA begin as mild skin infections, such as pimples or boils. Your doctor may be able to treat these infections without antibiotics by performing a minor surgical procedure that opens and drains the sores. If your doctor prescribes antibiotic medication, be sure to take all of it — even if you begin to feel better right away. If you do not finish the medication, you may not kill all the bacteria. No matter what your

treatment, be sure to call your doctor if your infection does not get better as expected, or if you experience fever, chills, or extreme weakness. Left untreated, MRSA can transfer to deeper skin structures, bones, or even cause significant infection leading to sepsis, which is an internal systemic infection. Dr. Morris Friedman, DO, an internist at Refuah Health Center, has been seeing patients at Refuah since 2012. He graduated Midwestern University in 2000, and has been Board Certified by American Board of Internal Medicine. Dr. Friedman sees patients at Refuah’s New Square and Twin sites.

leech also secretes hirudin, which helps heal MRSA. Here’s a story on that: My neighbor brought over her sweet four-yearold the other week. The child suffered from a dangerous case of MRSA. The large patch of infected skin was covered in a pus bubble the size of a golf ball. The mother was in tears, relaying that she had tried everything already, and can no longer bear to watch her child suffer. Twice that week, we applied leeches to drain the puss, and then put some ANTI-MRSA diluted with water onto the infected area with a compress. She also took ANTI-MRSA orally. Slowly, we watched the MRSA shrink in size, and finally, we applauded when it disappeared completely.

honey and grated or thinly sliced potatoes. The cream and dressing should be changed every 12 hours, using warm compresses in between, which breaks up the puss and helps it to drain. If the skin breaks and the wound is open, I recommend the MR Skin Healing Cream together with the MR Wound Powder (instead of the ichthammol), to be changed daily with the warm compresses in between. Does the cream or honey and potato method prevent infection, or only drain the wound? They draw out the infection. Most people are helped by these creams, and only a few end up in the hospital after trying our methods. The hospital is really a last resort, when the infection is in

HOW CAN I PREVENT GETTING OR SPREADING MRSA? By Dr. Morris Friedman, DO of Refuah Health Center

As more antibiotic-resistant bacteria develop, hospitals are taking extra care to practice infection control, which includes frequent hand-washing and isolation of patients who are infected with MRSA. You can also take steps to protect yourself from MRSA: • Practice good hygiene. • Keep your hands clean by washing them frequently and thoroughly with soap and clean, running water, or using an alcohol-based hand sanitizer. Hand-washing is the best way to avoid spreading germs. • Keep cuts and scrapes clean

and covered with a bandage, and avoid contact with other people’s wounds or bandages. • Do not share personal items such as towels or razors.

cure viral infections. Always ask your doctor if antibiotics are the best treatment and follow through with the recommended treatment plan.

• Be smart about using antibiotics. Know that antibiotics can help treat bacterial infections, but they cannot

• Always take all your antibiotic medicine as prescribed by your doctor. Using only part of the medicine may cause

The healing process takes a week or two, depending on how much the tissue in that area is affected, and once healed, it typically does not reappear. Are some people more prone to contracting MRSA? Even at the height of an epidemic not everyone becomes ill. The disease seems to choose those who are weak, have experienced a lot of stress, or those who do not receive their vital vitamins and minerals. How can we help stop the spread of MRSA? For prevention, wash your and your children’s hands with antibacterial soap each time after exiting a public place; germs are everywhere. Try to keep your skin barrier healthy since cracked and irritated skin is an open invitation for MRSA related bacteria, which can then enter the bloodstream and establish itself in different tissues. We have special supplements to keep the immune system strong, and it is also advisable to take multivitamins and minerals derived from fresh herbs. This is important, especially now, when the infection is rampant. Please note that I do not recommend the use of clay to heal MRSA. If you do choose to apply it to the affected skin, make sure that you do not take it orally. It should especially not be given to kids before consulting with your pediatrician. I have heard about many unfortunate cases where clay damaged the intestines, causing severe pain and discomfort.

antibiotic-resistant bacteria to develop. • Do not save any antibiotics, and do not use antibiotics that were prescribed for someone else. If you have MRSA, you can prevent spreading the bacteria: • Cover your wound with clean, dry bandages. Toss disposable infected material promptly. Follow your doctor’s instructions on caring for your wound. • Keep your hands clean. You, your family, and other people with whom you are in

close contact should wash their hands often with soap and clean, running water or use an alcoholbased hand sanitizer, especially after changing a bandage or touching a wound. • Children need to be kept at home only if they are feeling sick. If it is just a small pimple or area of infection, as long as it is properly covered and not touched, the infection will not be contagious. • Do not share towels, washcloths, razors, clothing, or other items that may have had contact with your wound or a bandage. Wash your sheets,

a dangerous area or has already spread far and is not responding to the treatment. In some cases, (such as a fever developing, etc.), the person may need antibiotics. For prevention, there are certain supplements and precautions one can take to help. Have you seen a rise in MRSA in recent years? Yes; very, very much so. I also find that summer is much worse than the winter. MRSA is much more prevalent in the summer, largely due to the swimming pools frequented. Chlorine doesn’t kill the MRSA bacteria; in fact, it seems to proliferate in the pool. It’s very contagious, so a lot of people come down with MRSA. Mosquito bites are very receptive to MRSA as well. I see a lot of them infected in the summer. All you need is a tiny hole for the MRSA bacteria to enter.

towels, and clothes with warm water and detergent and dry them in a hot dryer, if possible. It is also recommended to wash your loads separately. • Keep your environment clean by wiping all frequently touched surfaces (such as countertops, doorknobs, and light switches) with a disinfectant. • Limit swimming in a public pool, until infection has been treated. • Using Hibiclens, an antiseptic skin cleanser, can also be effective.

THE DISCOVERY OF ANTIBIOTICS

WHAT IS AN ANTIBIOTIC?

Alexander Fleming: Who Was He? “The time may come when penicillin can be bought by anyone in the shops. Then there is the danger that the ignorant man may easily underdose himself and by exposing his microbes to nonlethal quantities of the drug make them resistant.”

--Alexander Flemming, 1945 Alexander Fleming, the son of farmers, was a Scottish biologist and botanist and Nobel Prize winner. He was called Alex, and was only seven when his father died. He didn’t let that hinder him though. He is famous for his remarkable discovery of antibiotic (penicillin G). Ironically, the laboratory in which Fleming used to do research was often very dirty. The discovery of penicillin was accidental. In 1928, he had a bunch of Petri dishes scattered across his workbench. He was investigating staphylococci — a group of bacteria. After being out for a few days, he noticed mold on one dish which had contained a harmful kind of bacteria. Close to the mold, the bacteria had disappeared while farther away they were alive and growing! He did some more testing and identified the mold as one of a group called “Penicillium.” This was named after the Latin word for “fine brush” — the shape the bacteria resembled. He then decided to call his discovery “penicillin.” Before he named it penicillin, Fleming called his discovery “mold juice.”

Something that kills or stops the growth of bacteria.

BY THE NUMBERS 154 MILLION prescriptions written in the US every year

30% of US antibiotic prescriptions are unnecessary. That translates into over 46 MILLION excess prescriptions! (Some estimate it is closer to 50 MILLION).

$160 MILLION allotted for fiscal 2016 for the National Action Plan for Combating Antibiotic-Resistant Bacteria. 1/5 Emergency room visits are thanks to adverse reactions to meds. © Source Center for Disease Control

ABC news reported that according to researchers at the Alexandria University of Egypt, Green Tea helps antibiotics fight bacteria 3 times more effectively than without it.

The #1 reason for excess prescriptions: patient (or patient’s parents) pressure!

According to The Guardian, in England there are 10 MILLION excess prescriptions filled each year.

2 MILLION people in the U.S. contract antibiotic-resistant bacterial infections every year.

Drugs do not work on viruses. According to researchers, 10% of Americans believe they do.

The discovery of penicillin by Fleming was the foundation of modern antibiotics and saved millions of lives. He died in London, on March 11, 1955, from a fatal heart attack.

CHAPTER TWO

Mrs. Berman did it, and so did I. I finished school, got married and — gasp — accepted a secretarial job at a low-key Judaica wholesale business. I was shocked, but proud of myself. I somberly explained to my husband that I was doing this for his and our future family’s sake, but he didn’t look as impressed as I’d hoped he’d be. He nodded (shrugged?) nonchalantly — not the round of applause I’d been waiting for. I suppressed my disappointment and shored up my resolution inside: I would be the ultimate devoted wife and mommy. Work was boring but also predictable and undemanding, and that made up for the lack of action. In fact, I don’t know how I’d have handled anything interesting at that point. I was totally overwhelmed and busy enough making breakfast, lunch, and supper, and cleaning my clean windows, thank you very much. Often, I would pore over cookbooks twenty-five minutes before Husband’s Arrival, panicked that I still didn’t have des-

sert for our already three-course dinner. And then I’d race to the grocery, get chopped nuts, dash home, and fry apple slices in a nut mixture and wrap them in foil to keep them warm. My husband would walk into our cinnamon-scented apartment, unaware of what went on in these last twenty-five minutes. As I flipped pancakes, filled blintzes,

the form of neighbors knocking for my English tutoring service. I was a “chutznik” living in Eretz Yisroel, and that meant I could solve everyone’s English (the most hated subject in Israel) woes, right? Wrong. Well, it was nice, once, twice, three times. But by the fourth session I was scratching my

Come on. and shook dressings, I wondered how I could have ever managed to write up lesson plans, too. As I cut up and packed vegetable salads for my husband’s breakfast at one a.m. each night, I felt utterly grateful that I didn’t still have to mark papers. Mostly, I was living in newlywed bliss, satisfyingly far from the pressures of the school world. But the snags came in, in

head for yet another exciting strategy to get my cute eightyear-old student to remember the ABC’s. I’d exhausted flash cards and songs, and really didn’t have the patience to try anything else. But little dimpled Bini was waiting, and while she waltzed into my dining room with an expectant grin, I’d feel the dread settling in. I really just wanted to call it quits. Teaching

‫שענסטע מתנה לכבוד יו"ט‬ an eight-year-old reading was not my thing. But I pushed myself — and crazily enough, even accepted another student, this time, a thirteen-year-old who wanted to practice speaking English. Tuesdays and Thursday became D-Day, i.e. Dread Day. I’d physically feel my throat constrict as the minutes ticked by. My breath grew shallow and it would get hard to focus. I tried to smile and sound enthusiastic, but I couldn’t fool myself. When Bini or Yocheved finally left, I’d dance up a jig. Phew — one more down. I’d embrace my cookbooks like they were old friends and happily search for another dinner idea. I gained a whole new appreciation for cracking eggs and chopping vegetables. I’m free! Now I can live! The few dollars I pocketed on D-Day weren’t bad, and honestly, they kept me going. The wicked,

And why did I walk down the stairs to my studio apartment with flaming cheeks? What crime had I committed? staff-wielding taskmaster in me didn’t let me give it up either. My friends were teachers, my mother-inlaw was a teacher, every girl with a little self-respect dreamed of teaching — and I couldn’t get through a tutoring class? Come on. This seemingly innocent side job threw me into a lot of inner turmoil. What was wrong with me? I kept sane with the theories I desperately tried to believe (they were true). I disliked teaching basic stuff to little children. I just couldn’t find enthusiasm in teaching the ABC’s. It stifled and bored me. I also couldn’t stand rules. Fitting my head into a box of teaching methods confined me. I had a hard time following even my own lesson plan. I needed freedom — a bizarre notion, but a vital need nonetheless. I finally mustered the courage to knock on dimpled Bini’s door and tell her mother that I was finished. “I’m really much too busy,” was my honorablesounding reason. “I have a good day job and it keeps me more than occupied…” Was I imagining it, or was Mrs. Schwartz unimpressed? (Silly, lazy girl who doesn’t grab a good opportunity?) She shrugged. “Okay…so, yeah, I guess you can’t always do everything…” Why was she frowning? “But it is a shame, you know — it was a great arrangement…” And why did I walk down the stairs to my studio apartment with flaming cheeks? What crime had I committed? I’d done the unforgivable: I was honest with myself and the world.

30-Day Closings... Myth or Fact? by Ann Zeilingold It is possible to close a mortgage loan in 30 days or less. That is a fact. Unfortunately that doesn’t happen that often. On purchases, there is too much to juggle. The seller needs time to move, the buyers need to give notice at their apartment. On refinances, we usually are finished with the approval of the file within 30 days, but then a lot of times we are waiting for CEMAs (consolidation extension modification agreements). This is a legal maneuver whereby the borrower can avoid paying the mortgage tax on the existing mortgage again. It can save borrowers thousands of dollars. Unfortunately, CEMAs can take one month to four months. With the launching of TRID (TILA RESPA Integrated Disclosure) almost a year ago, on October 3rd, 2015, the following came into effect: a. If you don’t have email, your mortgage will take longer. b. We must build in an additional week to two weeks from the application to closing. c. Different lenders are handling TRID differently. Throughout the loan process, there are numerous COC (Change of Circumstances) that need to be disclosed to the buyer. Generally we disclose via email. Now with TRID, if we don’t have your consent prior to you signing your mortgage application and disclosures to communicate via email, then we are not allowed to disclose via email and we need to mail all the COC and disclosures to the client. There is a 7-day wait period after mailing these items/documents to the client that we don’t have when we email the same to the clients. So by not agreeing to email or if you don’t have email, there is forced

He was behind on his mortgage and swimming in credit card debt because he could not manage the payments. This is exactly the scenario that banks are afraid of.

wait periods that will postpone your closing. Now that we are actively engaged in doing business with TRID, we are learning how to deal with the rules. One rule is that a client must sign a form “Intent to Proceed.” Without that form signed and returned to us, we cannot order the appraisal. I recently experienced this. We disclosed an application, and we spelled the first name incorrectly (Avrohom vs. Avraham). The client didn’t want to sign until this was corrected. This triggered a COC, then re-disclosure. All of these changes have legal wait periods, so we could not order the appraisal until we were already over seven days into the process. We actually were ready at that point to submit the file for a commitment, and we issued a commitment even though the appraisal was not back. Another very important disclosure is the CD. The CD is the closing disclosures which needs to be viewed and signed by the borrower at least three days prior to closing. This disclosure cannot be sent out until the file is

locked and the final LE (Loan explanation) is sent and received and signed by the borrower. If there are any changes to the CD, which triggers the APR going up, or if there are changes to the loan, such as the loan amount changing or interest rate changing, a new CD has to be sent out. My client Chaim found that out the hard way. We were all ready to close on Friday, September 2, but Chaim decided to reduce his loan amount, thereby triggering a new COC that required a new CD. By the time this change was made, the earliest date we were able to close was Wednesday, September 7. This caused a problem with the movers, the first day of school, and an inconvenience to the seller. So, a closing can happen in

30 days. In order for it to happen, many factors have to fall into place. There can be no delays in paperwork requests and the e-signing of disclosures. The appraisers need to turn in their appraisals within a week, and if the appointment is not made, this cannot happen and will delay the closing. Insurance needs to be finalized and the rate needs to be locked so that there are no delays in the scheduling, and the attorneys need to provide the title report and bill early enough so that the final CD can be completed. If the realtor, client, lender, attorney, and insurance company don’t all work together, a 30-day closing will never be a reality.

The "special addition" is easily affixed to the inside of the garment for an alternate look, or it can simply add length for your growing g irls… ... so they can get more wear out of the skirts and dresses they love!

To have your camp join next year’s Tuna Tower Campaign contact Malky Ungar. 845.354.3233 xt 1119 mungar@chesed247.org

Our 6th Annual Tuna Tower Campaign was held during the 9 days which raised approximately 7,500 cans of

tuna to be used in the Chesed

24/7 hospitality rooms. For the Tuna Tower Campaign campers brought cans of tuna to be used in their camps tower. The tuna collected from this campaign will help make sandwiches and snacks for cholim and their families using one of Chesed 24/7 28 hospitality rooms. One little can of tuna makes such a difference to someone stranded in the hospital. Chesed 24/7 would like to express our sincerest gratitude to the participating camps that made this campaign possible. A special thank you to all directors and staff whose partnership and support was truly remarkable.
