5TH GENERATION OF WINE MAKERS
VISION MERLOT CABERNET SAUVIGNON SEMI DRY WHITE
Avraham Teperberg journeyed from Odessa to Jerusalem, 150 Years ago, to found the Teperberg winery. Five generations later Moti Teperberg keeps his vision alive and now leads the winery into the 21st century. The winery has settled in the Judean Mountains and has become one of the leading wineries in Israel. A series of youthful and fresh red and white wines, from the winery's vineyards in the Judean lowlands. The strength of these wines is reflected in their color and characteristic varietal aromas. The wines in this series are easy to drink and offer great value for money.

VITALONE ACHIEVES IMPOSSIBLE, 19 HOUR BEDSIDE TO BEDSIDE AIR MEDICAL TRANSPORT, MAKING DREAM OF ALIYAH COME TRUE FOR HOLOCAUST SURVIVOR. On MOnday MOrning September 5th, while the rest of the country enjoyed a slow start to Labor Day, Isaac Leider and the VitalOne crew arrived bright and early at 5 Rita Avenue in Monsey, New York ready to begin a labor of love: an air medical transport everyone else had deemed impossible. A chance encounter in Evergreen Kosher Market was the catalyst for this amazing journey; provided at a reduced rate and with a dedicated, volunteer crew. Rabbi Moshe Yehuda Lebowitz, a 73-year-old Holocaust survivor, has a long history of medical complications and respiratory problems. On a ventilator, when he was not inpatient at area hospitals, he often required the professional expertise of David Zidile, Respiratory Therapist. Having come close to death numerous times, Rabbi Lebowitz often quipped; “The next time I die, I want to be buried on Har Hamenuchas.” The idea took root, and before long, Rabbi Lebowitz became determined to make Aliyah, “while I am still breathing.” “For the longest time, I just thought of his wish as the whim of an older man; an impossible and unattainable dream”, shares his daughter and care coordinator, Gitty Kalikstein.

“We all knew he was much too sick to make the trip; and his doctors confirmed it. Some even told us that the flight would kill him!” The wish took an unexpected turn towards reality when Mrs. Lebowitz met David Zidile, who inquired after his patient’s health. “It’s the craziest thing,” Mrs. Lebowitz responded. “Moshe Yehuda wants to move to Israel, even though it’s impossible for him to travel.” David, who is the Flight Paramedic for VitalOne answered, “Of course it’s possible. I’ll call my boss, Isaac Leider.”
And so the stage was set for an incredible air medical transport. While Isaac consulted with doctors both in New York and Israel to arrange the myriad medical details, Nefesh B’Nefesh was contacted to initiate the Aliyah process. The Lebowitz family is not just any family; after raising 8 children of their own, they adopted four children with special needs, ranging in age from 15 to 28. Complex arrangements needed to be made for their ongoing care and comfort in Israel as well. With a bracha from Horav Chaim Kanievsky shlita encouraging their efforts, the Lebowitz family spent the next several months taking care of the hundreds of logistical details involved. Once the Aliyah was approved, VitalOne took over. The beside to bedside trip was anything but simple. Rabbi Lebowitz’s vitals had to be constantly monitored. Once on the plane, between the VitalOn medical team, the medications and the sophisticated medical equipment, the entire first class section of the EL AL Boeing 747 was turned into an airborne hospital room.
Gitty is still amazed at how smooth the transport went. “The ambulance came to my parents’ home and carefully transferred my father to the airport where I met them with 10 carry-ons filled with medication. Isaac was there orchestrating every step. The crew took us though the TSA check points, and from there we went to the King David lounge. As soon as we were ready to board, we were escorted directly to the EL AL plane where the lead flight attendant, Ian, was waiting to greet us. Between the complete attention of the Vital One crew, the entire fist class cabin prepared just for us, the incredible array of Glatt kosher food and the very gracious steward Ian who tended to our every need, you would have thought we were visiting dignitaries!” “I felt so comfortable that the VitalOne crew would be able to handle anything that might come up, I actually ate a delicious meal of grilled chicken and quinoa and took advantage of the Tempur-Pedic mattress to get some sleep!” With the intense preparation and professional expertise of the VitalOne crew including Dr. Avi Factor, Medical Director/ Flight Physician, David Zidile, Flight Paramedic & Respiratory Therapist and Raanan Zidile, Flight Paramedic, the flight turned out to be uneventful. “Though we are ready for anything, our goal is to be proactive rather than reactive and prevent any mid-flight medical crisis through close monitoring of vitals and constant supervision,” explains Dr. Avi Factor, Medical Director and Flight Physician.
As soon as the EL AL flight touched down in Ben Gurion airport at 5:45am, Rabbi Lebowitz was whisked into a United Hatzalah ambulance waiting on the tarmac, for the short ride to the Beit Rivka Geriatric Rehabilitation Hospital in Petah Tikva, the VitalOne crew at his side. At 7:32am, a mere 19 hours after the transport began, Rabbi Lebowitz was transferred to the care of Dr. Gregory Papirov, the accepting physician.
“My father is gloriously happy,” shares Gitty. “With G-d’s help he will soon be living in a brand new apartment in Jerusalem overlooking Geulah. Isaac can arrange anything. In his quiet and unassuming way, he accomplishes the impossible. Between him, David, Raanan, Avi Factor and the amazing crew, VitalOne made my father’s dream come true and we are all forever grateful.”

SHORT ON TIME SHLOCK
The “short-on-time shlock” with the roll-away awning that you featured last week is just brilliant! My sukkah is on a deck, so I don’t think it would work for us, but if it would, I would definitely go for it. I always love to see the unique topics that The Monsey View surprises us with. Thank you!
make your readers aware of an excellent kitchen product upon which you can rest the pomegranate half while it is thwacked. It makes the job a lot faster and easier. It looks like an upside-down bowl with a grid on the top to allow the seeds to fall through while supporting the fruit. It is for sale in all houseware stores, and even in the supermarkets.

PRACTICAL HALACHOS PUT INTO PRACTICE
I just wanted to take a minute to thank you for Rebbetzin Weissmandl’s column that really helped me over Yom Tov. In the hecticness of it all, and with the men away for most of the day, I’m so often unsure of what my obligations are. Knowing the halachos and being able to refer to them really put me at ease. YOUR VOICE SUKKAH-HOPPING ETIQUETTE
Now that Succos is right around the corner, and the children are excited to go visit Sukkahs in the neighborhood, I'd like to point out a few things that bothered me about the visitors' behavior in the past few years. Before sending the kids out, please remind them to: 1. Knock once, and not too loudly, so as not to wake anyone who may be asleep. 2. Leave the food at home, and not leave a trail of crumbs in others' sukkahs. 3. Not to touch or damage any of the Sukkah decorations. 4. Be polite, keep the visit short, and compliment the host. I'm looking forward to greeting your children this Succos. Your Neighbor

RE: WHAT ARE WE PORTRAYING? (ISSUE 70)
I have to confess that I am also a little put off by the Jewish advertisements for children’s clothing being marketed to the frum community that feature models that are decidedly very un-Jewish looking. I understand that very few of us want our children to become clothing models, especially our daughters, and it could very well be that these are high-resolution pictures distributed by the manufacturers for use in print media. But this still bothers me. Of course the models in these ads are all adorable, but is this what we are aspiring to? That this is how we want our kids to look? Call me crazy, but this just seems to lack yiddishe ta’am to me. Sandy Eller
I was happy to see the letter in last week’s View about improper advertisements, something that has been bothering me deeply for a while. I hope that companies will realize that we do not strive to dress up our children like what they are portraying, and I am looking forward to see more heimishe ads. A Mother

As told to: Basya Lev
I went shopping with my teenage daughter for a dress for Yom Tov. We went into one department store and saw a dress we liked very much. However, they did not have it in her size. The saleslady was able to order it for me. We left very happy and continued on to another store. In the new store, my daughter started to laugh as she found the exact dress we had just ordered. This store had it in her size. I looked at the price tag and saw the dress was about $30 cheaper in this store. I decided we would buy it and I would go back to the store to cancel the other order. I went to the checkout counter and gave the lady the dress. She rang it up and I paid with cash. When she gave me my change, I saw she had given me $10 too much. I returned the money, explaining the mistake. The lady was extremely impressed with my actions. She couldn’t believe how honest I was. She decided to reward me by giving me a 20% discount on the dress I had bought. I walked away feeling good about the Kiddush Hashem I had made and couldn’t get over the hashgacha pratis. I knew this was a story for Masterplan!
If you would like to submit your own Hashgacha Pratis story, please mail to The Monsey View at POB 305, Monsey, NY 10952, fax to 845.600.8483, or email it to viewmasterplan@gmail.com. Please remember to include your name and phone number.

By Tova Fried Every Yom Tov has a main characteristic that is its trademark. Yom Kippur is the Day of Atonement, Pesach is called z’man cheruseinu — the time of our freedom, Shavuos is called z’man matan Toraseinu — the time of the giving of the Torah, and Chanukah is the festival of light. Sukkos is called z’man simchaseinu, which translates as “the time of our joy.” Sukkos and joy are intertwined, and this is how it is meant to be. It is written explicitly in the Torah that we should be joyful during the chag of Sukkos: “Us’machtem lifnei Hashem Elokeichem — And you shall be joyful before Hashem your G-d for seven days." (Vayikra 23:40) Just as the Torah commands us to love Hashem, the Torah is commanding us to be joyful during Sukkos. What is the source of this joy? For surely there must be a source we can dip into, if we are not just encouraged but commanded to be joyful. The Shem MiShmuel explains the connection between Sukkos and joy as follows: The first Yom Tov in Tishrei is Rosh Hashanah. “Rosh” means head, and indeed, Rosh Hashanah represents the intellect. Rosh Hashana is also called the Yom HaDin — the day of strict justice. On Rosh Hashanah, we rededicate ourselves to living lives of justice in accordance with the Torah, which is an intellectual decision. Yom Kippur represents the heart. Yom Kippur is associated with Aharon HaKohen, who was known for his ahavas Hashem and his ahavas yisroel. Rav Yosef Dov Soloveitchik, zt”l, notes that the avodah of Yom
66 / THE MO NS E Y V IE W
Kippur was given to Aharon Hakohen himself, not to the “kohen gadol.” This is because Aharon HaKohen pursued peace due to his outstanding ahavas yisroel, which was an offshoot of his ahavas Hashem. Yom Kippur is a time when we rededicate ourselves to ahavas Hashem. Thus we see that Yom Kippur is associated with the heart. The Shem MiShmuel emphasizes that people are a combination of mind and heart. We must have both in order to be balanced and complete. Both aspects of ourselves — the intellect and the heart — join together in synchrony during the chag of Sukkos. We can see this synchrony in the objects we use on Sukkos. The most famous object we use on Sukkos is the sukkah itself. The sukkah is symbolic of the ananei hakavod — the Clouds of Glory that accompanied Klal Yisroel in the desert. The ananei hakavod were given in the merit of Aharon HaKohen, who personified peace. The sukkah represents peace, just as the ananei hakavod kept us secure and peaceful. This is the heart aspect of Sukkos. The second major object of Sukkos is the lulav. The lulav is straight, which represents logic, or intellect. Rosh Hashana is associated with Moshe Rabbeinu. He represented the Torah and its yashrus: “Moshe emes utoraso emes.” The Torah is intellectual, and is epitomized by Moshe. The lulav thus represents the intellectual aspect of Sukkos. Sukkos brings together the intellect and the heart. By bringing to-
gether the lulav and the sukkah, the holiday fuses intellect with emotion, and gives us a sense of shaleimus — completeness. Completeness and fulfillment, in turn, lead to great joy — the joy created when differing aspects of our inner selves are in harmony with each other. We sit in our sukkah and rejoice in this wondrous union of our deepest natures. So we see that Sukkos is a time of deep joy. As we sit in our sukkos, eating, drinking, and enjoying this special time with our families, one might wonder: What happened to the fear we felt on Yom Kippur? Just a few days earlier, we were trembling, worried whether we will live or die. How is it possible to transition from intense fear to intense joy in the span of four days? We observe every Yom Tov for two days, with the exception of Yom Kippur. Chazal decreed that Yom Kippur should be observed for only one day due to the danger of fasting for two days. However, there were tzaddikim that fasted two days, such as Rabbeinu Yitzchak, one of the Baalei Tosfos. What’s more, the day after a Yom Tov contains some of the light of that Yom Tov. So the day after Yom Kippur is part of Yom Kippur, so in a sense there are really three days from Yom Kippur until Sukkos. Perhaps those three days are the reason we can put the fear of Yom Kippur behind us and enter the sukkah with joy. Three is a chazakah. If we have entered the chag of Sukkos, it means we have lived for three days after Yom Kippur. We have a chazakah for life, so we can assume that we will live. We put the fear behind us and celebrate z’man simchaseinu. May we all feel the true joy of Sukkos, and may we all be zoche to dwell in the sukkas oro shel liv’yasan.

Car Magnets Express Hakaras Hatov to Ramapo Police If you have been driving around Ramapo over the past two weeks, you may have noticed them: blue and white car magnets bearing the words, “I thank and support my police.” Using automobiles as a medium to express gratitude to our local police force was the idea that came to Spring Valley resident, Shoshana Bernstein, after tensions erupted after a police shooting in Dallas, Texas. Mrs. Bernstein spoke to several people about her idea and Hiko Energy on College Road agreed to sponsor the project. After placing an initial order of 2,000 magnets, Mrs. Bernstein displayed the magnets at the service desks of Evergreen, Monsey Glatt, Rockland Kosher, and Wesley Kosher, where they are available free to shoppers. “My husband has been stopped on the road a couple
of times by people saying, ‘Where did you get the magnet? It’s such a great idea,’” said Mrs. Bernstein. Magnets are also available at the Ramapo Police Department on Route 59 and with the initial order almost completely depleted, Mrs. Bernstein has ordered an additional 1,000 magnets. “People are grateful for the opportunity to show appreciation,” observed Mrs. Bernstein. The Appreciation Matters campaign, an attempt to building community bridges while publicly acknowledging members of law enforcement, has caught the eye of people in other communities. Mrs. Bernstein said that she is looking into the possibility of taking the campaign beyond the Ramapo area after the yomim tovim. (The Journal News/News 12)
South Florida Escapes Major Damage From Hurricane Matthew All eyes were glued to the Atlantic Ocean last week as Hurricane Matthew barreled towards the United States with deadly 140 mile per hour winds and torrential rain falls. Miami residents worried about the possibility of endless power outages during the busy Yom Tov season for snowbirds who winter in sunny South Florida. Matthew killed more than 800 people in Haiti and demolished tens of thousands of homes. Miami residents heaved a sigh of relief as the Category 4 storm headed towards Florida when it became apparent that they would be spared the worst of Matthew’s wrath, which seemed to be heading towards Palm Beach. As residents of Fort Lauderdale, Deerfield Beach, Boca Raton, Delray, and West Palm Beach prepared for the worst, the eye of the monster hurricane veered slightly eastward, propel-

ling Matthew further north. Both Fort Lauderdale and Palm Beach International Airports opened for business just hours after Matthew passed by on October 6th, leaving residents to deal with not much more than scattered palm fronds that fell during the storm and occasional power outages. By the time Matthew finally made landfall in South Carolina two days later as a weakened Category 1 hurricane, 13 people had died in the United States and nearly 2 million were without electricity. While residents of the Southeast were grateful to have avoided the worst of Matthew’s fury, many were still left dealing with catastrophic flooding and other weather related fallout. ELECTION NEWS

THE SECOND PRESIDENTIAL DEBATE
for almost the full first hour. By the end of the night, it was a widely regarded as a decisive win for Trump. Be that as it may, tempers had simmered down considerably when it came to closing statements, and fittingly, the last question from the audience was a request for both candidates to name one thing they admire about each other. Hillary praised Donald’s children and Donald praised Hillary’s fighting spirit and they were affable before walking off. And now, with four weeks left, on we go with one of the most unpredictable and volatile elections in recent history. There will be one final debate between the candidates on October 19th and then a sprint to the finish line on November 8th.
The second debate between the two presidential candidates took place on Sunday, October 9th at Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri. It was a town hall style debate with questions coming from members of the audience as well as some that had been submitted prior to the debate. The first debate had a considerably negative effect in the polls for Donald Trump. Additionally, a recording of him being disrespectful had been released by a newspaper over the weekend, so this was a must win for him. The debate started off incredibly tense. In the first debate, Hillary’s strategy had been to attack Trump POLLS and get him flustered — and it had worked. This time, though, he RCP POLL AVERAGES came prepared. CHAPTER 12
Sun on
Stone By Chany Rosengarten Recap: Malka’la is so cold, she barely makes it back to the Kahns’ house. When she finally does come in, Gella admonishes her, but helps her warm up. Gella tells her she can’t collect this way, and that a better solution will be found. Malka’la assured Gella she was fine, that she wasn’t in pain, it was nothing, this throb and pull she felt pulsing through her. She didn’t want to tell Gella, didn’t want to prolong this, especially as Malka’la could no longer stand the water on her raw skin; she could barely stand upright, and the words Gella was saying — talking, weaving out of her mouth in a never-ending string — were grating, hurting, rubbing. Malka’la didn’t want solutions. She didn’t want Gella to make phone calls to “her very rich cousin who married off his son in a decorated warehouse.” She wanted for the Eibishter to see her strong desire, and bless her actions. She wanted dignity in her choices. And the more Gella spoke, the more despairing Malka’la became, until she couldn’t stand it anymore. “I’m tired now. I’ll go to sleep. Let’s talk when morning comes.” She went into her room. She locked the door, checking it twice. She fell into bed, fully clothed.

The bed was so warm. She was so cold. The tiredness pulled her down, down, out. It was morning. Everything hurt. Everything — her throat, when did she think about her throat? But now she did, she felt it, she couldn’t lift it, it was a weight, a heavy burden, scratchy. Swallowing was difficult and painful, just swallowing her saliva made her protest. Her hands were cold, so cold, so cold, so, so cold. She shivered. The shiver wracked her. The movement hurt. The room was still brooding, but she could see that a shy sun had emerged. She got up — but no. She couldn’t get up. I can’t just lie here. So she climbed out of bed. The cold was even worse. Had she seen more blankets in the closet last night? She ventured to the closet. Her eyes looked out to an infinite sea of blackness. Steady yourself. But she couldn’t. She was fly-
ing, 6,000 miles a minute, and she was scared. The sensation left her breathless, sick. She swayed. Fell. Grabbed on to the bed. Yesterday’s food was still inside of her, a bundle, a burden. A wave of nausea overtook her. She clutched the bed tighter. It was no use to keep fighting herself. The food dispensed from whence it came in a powerful surge. It was an intense effort, heaving up an entire kingly feast from deep inside her, but it was a relief. She clutched the edge of her bed, so as not to fall. She bent over so as not to filthy herself. Tears beaded into her vision, from the exertion of it, from the involuntary desperation to purge. And then, she was done, and she was spent. An acrid taste filled her mouth, a fetid smell wafted into her nose. But she was too spent to attend to herself. She grabbed the towel that hung at the headboard, and

threw it on the mess. How would that shaggy carpet ever come clean? She was sleeping now, again, now and then convulsing from cold, from overwhelming heat, from fatigue. When Gella awoke, her first thoughts took her right back to yesterday, and she remembered her conversation with the weakened, tired Malka’la. She felt a sort of trepidation and responsibility. Her husband was gracious with guests, as he was with all, but he generally kept out of her domain, and her understanding of how to welcome them, how to treat frequent guests. But she might need his help with this one. She sent the children out after farina, and with a recess snack. She had told Malka’la to only eat supper with them, because she
day got darker. Night. Where was Malka’la? Had she slunk out of the house? Even the schools had started an hour later because of road conditions. Gella served supper. But not before knocking gently on Malka’la’s door. Silence. She continued serving, but her mind kept active. Where was Malka’la so long? She did not know a thing about
Her hands were cold, so cold, so cold, so, so cold. She shivered. never wanted guests to feel obligated or pressured. Gella would rather stock and restock their pantry and fridge, and have them eat to their hearts’ desire because she wasn’t always available to serve. Today, though, she wouldn’t have minded. The farina was extra creamy, buttery, with the slightest twang of salt, and the most heavenly wisp of sugar. She had doled out brown sugar for the kids to top it with and they had licked the bowls clean. But Malka’la didn’t come; Gella couldn’t even hear a sound from that direction of the house. She davened. Straightened the house, made the beds, sautéed supper, simmered a soup, wrote a grocery list, called her friend on the phone. The buses started arriving, the sun went lower, the

Monsey. I wonder if she’s okay. Gella sat at the table, brows furrowed. “I hope she didn’t do anything desperate and stupid.” Supper finished, the girls went downstairs to study, the boys went upstairs to play. No word of Malka’la. “I’m worried,” she told Zalman. She knocked again, louder. She tried the door handle. It was locked. “I’m very worried.” “She’s only our guest. She’s an adult.” “I’m still very worried. She arrived yesterday. She has no one. Yesterday, she was rash, because she is so… frantic. I don’t know if she got lost somewhere. She doesn’t even know our number.” “I think we need to give her space. She is an adult.” Gella went back to the kitch-
en. She cleaned. She put her children to bed. She ironed. She even emptied the mending basket. It was now midnight. She had not heard from her guest. It was true that she didn’t have the right to barge in on her guest room, when she had given it away. But she had to. Still, she resisted. She took a long bath. It was late; soon she’d need to be up again. She got ready for bed. And still, she tiptoed down the stairs and stood in front of the closed, wooden door. She knocked. “Malka’la? It’s me, Gella.” Nothing. She went into the kitchen, opened the light, fished for the key on the key and mail hanger. She tiptoed back. “Malka’la?” Nobody answered. She had the right to open it. She needed to find clues. The door opened. A dark spot on the carpet gleamed in the shadows. The bed was bumpy. The smell was unpleasant. “Malka’la?” She turned on the light. Walked around the bed. Malka’la was hidden under swathes of blanket. Gella tore the blanket off. “Are you alive?!” To be continued... Chany Rosengarten authors columns and serialized novels in leading publications. CHICKEN KIEV
The chicken can be prepared in advance until after step 3, then frozen. Fry frozen breaded cutlets in hot oil the day you want to use them.
1 stick margarine ½ teaspoon salt 1 frozen garlic cube 1 frozen dill cube 1 frozen basil cube 1 frozen parsley cube 8 chicken cutlets, thinly sliced and flattened ½ cup flour 2 eggs ¾ cup plain breadcrumbs 1 teaspoon parsley flakes Oil for frying
94
/ T HE MONS E Y V IE W
1. Let margarine come to room temperature. Place softened margarine in a shallow bowl, and combine with salt and the frozen herb cubes. Mash margarine and spices together using a fork. Place the spiced margarine mixture in a parchment paper and roll into a log shape. Place in freezer for half hour or until margarine is stiff. 2. Remove margarine from freezer and cut into eight even slices. Take one cutlet and place a slice of spiced margarine in the center. Roll up, and secure with a toothpick if needed. 3. Place flour in one bowl, beaten eggs in another bowl and bread crumbs mixed with parsley flakes in a third bowl. Dredge rolled cutlet in flour, then in egg, and then in breadcrumbs. Set aside. Repeat with all cutlets. 4. Fill medium saucepan ¼ full with oil. Wait until oil is hot. Place breaded, rolled-up chicken cutlet into hot oil and fry until brown on all sides. Repeat with all cutlets. Serve warm.
SESAME CHICKEN NUGGETS
I know everyone has their own recipe for sesame chicken, but this one is a real winner. A little trick: You can use this exact sauce recipe over cubed tilapia fish as well; it makes for extremely elegant and tasty Yom Tov fish.
4 chicken cutlets, cut into cubes Batter: 2 eggs 1 cup flour ½ cup water 3 tablespoons oil
2 teaspoons baking powder 1 tablespoon paprika 1 teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon pepper 1 teaspoon garlic powder Oil, for frying
Sauce: 9 tablespoons mayonnaise 9 tablespoons ketchup 9 tablespoons duck sauce 6 tablespoons honey 2 tablespoons onion soup mix 3 tablespoons sesame seeds
1. Heat oil in a pot. Combine all batter ingredients in a large bowl. Dip chicken nuggets into batter and fry in oil. Place cooked nuggets into a 9x13” pan. 2. Combine all sauce ingredients and pour over fried chicken nuggets. Heat the entire pan in the oven for about 10 minutes on 250° so that the sauce gets hot. SEASONED CHEF: You can make the chicken and sauce in advance. When you’re ready to serve it, just pour the sauce over the chicken and reheat.

It was a simpler time; one that seems almost magical, in retrospect. I was young and naïve, my biggest worry being whether I would get lost in the vast building I called school. I had no real responsibilities to fulfill other than making my bed every morning and brushing my teeth every night. Thus, the prospect of Sukkos approaching was exciting and stress-free. It was with great anticipation that I watched Tatty fasten the familiar blue-grey canvas walls to the metal pipe frame that was attached to our porch. He threaded heavy rope through the metal eyes and around the pipes, then laid wooden beams over the pipes supporting the schlack, and finally, slid the long unwieldy bamboo poles across the beams. A sukkah was born! But a sukkah has to be “dressed”. So (and this, as they say in third grade, was the “funnest” part of all), the large cardboard boxes marked “SUKKAH” were fetched from their dusty perch on the garage shelf, and placed on a folding table in the sukkah. The contents were lifted out, one by one, to my delight. I couldn’t resist fingering the fake green pear, the long strings of

plastic (hypoallergenic!) nuts, and the cool, rubbery faux grapes. The plastic head of cauliflower was always attached to a corner pole and, frankly, it was kind of creepy looking. Next, the postcards depicting scenes from Eretz Yisrael were brought to light and at-
with a yellow felt sun, radiating orange rickrack rays. The message below it read: “Thank You Hashem!” Not long thereafter, I found myself huddled in the sukkah with my parents and a few relatives, trying to keep warm, with just the flimsy canvas walls to protect us from the wind. But I always felt toasty inside; secure and happy under my father’s watchful gaze, safe in the sukkah. * * * * * SUKKOS IN ERETZ ISRAEL was indescribable (but I’m going to try to describe it anyway). I experienced it for the first time as a child, spending the Yom Tov with my mother and father, in my grandfather’s apartment building in Katamon. I was awestruck by the fact that the entire land seemed to be gearing up for Sukkos. Arbah minim were hawked at every street corner, while garish, glittery decorations were offered in hastily erected stalls in front of the then-novel department stores. Nestled in a tiny sukkah situated on a balcony overlooking Rechov Dostai, I was too young to appreciate the fact that three generations of Censors were celebrating yom tov together; two of the generations having barely escaped the fiery inferno

Soon my school projects from years gone by made their appearance. My favorite was a black triangular length of material crowned
of the Holocaust with the Nazis at their heels. To me, it was just a lovely, warm scene, as we sat together in picture-perfect weather, enjoying each other’s company in the sun-dappled sukkah.

I felt loved and secure under Bumpapa’s amused gaze and my father’s proud regard.
Desperate, I wandered into the baby’s room and my eyes alighted upon a box of colorful plastic shapes. Eureka! * * * * * YEARS LATER, I ONCE AGAIN found myself in the Holy Land for Sukkos, only this time, I was forced to invite myself over to relatives I barely knew, or shlep along with friends as they imposed on their relatives . I was lucky enough to be hosted for many of the meals by the wonderful Hoffman family. Monsey residents, they maintained an apartment in Eretz Yisroel and spent each of the Shalosh Regalim there, also hosting stray seminary girls desperate for a place to stay. They were warm, friendly, and so kind. Their apartment was a flight or two up, while their sukkah was on ground level, but they cheerfully transported dishes of delicious Yom Tov food up and down those steps uncomplainingly. There I sat, cozy in the sukkah, listening to zemiros and divrei Torah, feeling cared for, calm, and serene under the calm and cheerful gaze of my hostess. * * * * * MY FIRST SUKKAH AS A kollel wife was a rather spartan affair. one-year-old child, though already a prodigy (ahem), was not yet producing any Sukkos artwork. I walked around the house, looking for something festive to give the place a lift. Aluminum foil? Hardly. Strings of cheerios? A mess if it rains. Desperate, I wandered into the baby’s room and my eyes alighted upon a box of colorful plastic shapes. Eureka! Grabbing the box, I skipped to the sukkah and somehow looped the bulky strands of plastic shapes over poles and supports. Hmmm… not bad. Encouraged, I ran back to the nursery and found a few more rainproof toys with which to festoon the sukkah. Throughout Yom Tov, I sat in that sukkah with my little family, admiring my handiwork, congratulating myself on my creativity. Happy to be married, the lucky mother of a beautify child prodigy, I felt snug in that simple sukkah, thankful and serene under my baby’s adoring gaze. * * * * * WE HAVE A NEW SUKkah now, big enough to accommodate our wonderful, though verbose, group of adult children, and grandchildren, along with Grandpa and Bubby and a few guests. There are constant comings and goings, as one daughter runs into the house to check on her sleeping baby, while a son-in-law enters the sukkah again after checking to see if the kids on the swings are okay. The food is, baruch Hashem, plentiful, the zemiros lively, the conversation punctuated by grown-up
laughter and the peals of giggling girls. My husband and I raise our gazes heavenward in mock despair, as the noise level rises. Our eyes meet and I can tell we are both thinking that we have so much for which to be thankful. A sense of deja vu sweeps over me and I feel that warmth, security and calm that the sukkah symbolizes; I feel protected and esteemed under my husband’s gaze. * * * * * WHO KNOWS WHERE I will be in ten or twenty, or even thirty years from now? In my own sukkah? Will I be a guest in my children’s? Will I be taking advantage of the kindness of a neighbor or friend, or perhaps extending that kindness to

My grandfather, father, and even the wonderful Mrs. Hoffman are no longer around to watch out for me. My husband has taken over that task and I fervently hope he will continue to do so for many, many years to come. But one thing I know for certain: Whichever sukkah I will be situated in, and whoever my company will be, I hope to always feel secure, warm and treasured, under the loving gaze of ‌ my Father in heaven.

Days before Sukkos arrived this year, the bang of hammers could be heard all around Monsey as families toiled to build their temporary homes. Over in New Hempstead, though, the quiet swish-swish-swish of brush traversing wood could be heard as well, if only you knew where to train your ear. With painstaking devotion, Hershel Lorenz could be found finishing his newest creation, an exquisite painting he calls “The Gates of Prayer,” standing roughly two feet tall by 18 inches wide. What makes Mr. Lorenz’s work so unique is that his paintings aren’t just displayed on the walls of his sukkah — they are the walls of his sukkah! Intrigued by the artist in our midst, The Monsey View caught up with Mr. Lorenz to learn more about his unique artwork. TMV: How did you come up with the idea of painting directly onto the sukkah walls, instead of just hanging up your artwork? HL: I came up with that idea about 25 years ago. My original sukkah was full sheets of plywood, and I just felt that it would be nice to paint directly onto the walls. I originally did two paintings, and then thirteen years ago, I started painting a new picture every year. TMV: Your art is really beautiful. Is your talent solely inborn, or did somebody teach you different techniques? HL: Well, I always enjoyed drawing, even when I was young. After my bar mitzvah I took lessons from an artist, and then as I got older, I took professional level courses at an institution. The talent was nurtured through the years. TMV: How long does it take you to create a painting for your sukkah? HL: It really depends on how much detail needs to be put into the pictures. Some require more work, and others less. Creating one piece can take anywhere from ten to twenty hours. I break it up over a number of days.
TMV: What art mediums do you primarily use? HL: In general I work with pastels and colored pencils, but for the sukkah, I work with acrylics. Before I paint the wood, I treat the wood with a product called gesso, which seals it, and then I paint on top of that. Gesso was originally used for painting on canvas to seal the material, but it works well for wood, too. TMV: How do you protect the art from rain damage? HL: Acrylic is not affected by water. You don’t have to worry about it. Even the paintings I made 25 years ago are still perfect. No damage at all. TMV: Do many people pop in to your sukkah just to see your artwork? HL: Not only do they walk in to see my sukkah, people actually start asking me a month or two before Succos if I have a new picture yet! TMV: Do you ever create art for other people? HL: I am a portrait artist by profession, so yes, I do.

Having lived in Eretz Yisroel for over a decade, I was quite familiar with the ups and downs in the rhythm of life there, be they through my Israeli sistersin-law snickering about my language mistakes, the serious blunders I made in the makolet, or the tremendous cultural differences. But most felt were the economic ups and downs. Being that my husband learns in a kollel full time, there are times when we, baruch Hashem, sail through the month, and other times when we do not know with what we will buy our next packet of milk (yes, packet of milk – that too took time getting used to). I have a collection of half-shekel coins; every time I receive change with a half-shekel coin, I pop it into my “collection box.”
and somehow, we just get by. It is certainly challenging, but gives us a sense of fulfillment. What pulls us through each and every time is my husband’s unwavering emunah in Hakadosh Baruch Hu. Two of those instances stick out vividly in my mind. It was Friday, Erev Succos — that year, the first day of Succos fell on a Shabbos — and my husband still did not have a lulav and esrog! “What are you going to do? How are you going to buy a lulav and esrog? You already borrowed money from this friend and that brother…” But my husband was as calm as ever. “If Hashem gave us the mitzvah of lulav and esrog,” he said, “He will also provide the means to buy them. We don’t shake the lulav on Shabbos, so there’s still time…” I was very skeptical, but since it’s mainly my husband’s
I was very skeptical, but since it’s mainly my husband’s mitzvah, I left the worrying up to him and went to the kitchen to continue with my mitzvos. There were many a time when I dipped into that box to buy bread for the children’s sandwiches. My in-laws help us out before Yom Tov by giving us coupons they receive from the bank. My parents send us some money when they can, (my father is still in kollel). My husband’s kollel adds a little extra,

mitzvah, I left the worrying up to him and went to the kitchen to continue with my mitzvos. Shabbos Succos was beautiful as it always is. The mix and match of singing penetrating from the various sukkahs in the courtyard — the warbling Sefardic songs, the marchingstyle Gerrer Chassidic tunes, and the ordinary zemiros sung
in yeshivos around the world. The food was good, the atmosphere elevating, and Shabbos drew to an end. After Havdalah was made, dishes washed, floors shone, and showered kids were squeaky clean, there was a knock at the door. A young lady introduced herself. “Hi, my name is Aviva. I arrived in Israel from London before Yom Kippur. I’m so sorry I didn’t make it here up until now, but...” and she went into a long drasha of why she didn’t come up until now. “Your aunt sent you money for Yom Tov and begged me to give it to you as soon as I arrived, but…” I looked at my husband and smiled. It had been one of Hashem’s ways of testing our emunah. My husband had passed with flying colors! On another occasion, it was Erev Succos (again), and the house was in an uproar. We had plenty of family and guests coming for Yom Tov, I had a newborn, and since kollel hadn’t paid for the past few months, we were s-t-u-c-k! My husband borrowed quite a large sum of money from his friends and told me to make a “happy Yom Tov” — no one was allowed to feel that we had to tighten our belts. So I went out and bought meats, drinks and wines, and nosh for the kids. The girls made do with a new headband and tights, and the boys a new kapel and tzitzis instead of a new outfit. Each purchase came along with the dreaded feeling of, “How on earth are we gonna pay back all this money that we borrowed?”
But as usual, my husband and his steadfast emunah calmed me down time and time again. And then it was Erev, Erev Yom Tov. I was much too tired to decorate the sukkah, so the boys (six of them) were in the sukkah hanging up the decorations, with lively music playing in the background. “There’s an English-speaking couple outside. They want to talk to you.” One of my boys was at my elbow. A million thoughts ran through my mind: Who could that be? Why didn’t they just knock on the front door if they want to talk to me? I came to the front of the build-
ing, and there stood an American couple, the husband heavily suntanned, wearing a designer suit and a gorgeous tie, and the wife, with a small beret covering her hair, adorned with fashionable sunglasses and a million-dollar handbag. She put out her hand to me, which I shook with all the warmth I could muster. I felt something hard in her hand, and seeing my puzzled expression, she said, “This house sounds like a happy home, and I’d love to be part of it!” I was so gobsmacked, all I could do was open and close my mouth, but nothing came out! I thanked her profusely and told
her that this money will go directly to simchas Yom Tov! I was so overwhelmed with gratitude; I begged them to join us for one of the Yom Tov meals, but they said they were already sorted out. We parted ways… I didn’t even think of counting the notes; I just ran into the house and gave it to my husband… He counted, smiled, and said, “Enough to cover the loan I took from my friend, and even a little more for you to go out and buy yourself a little something for Yom Tov!” Hashem just loves us (and my husband’s emunah).

• Palm trees are an icon, a symbol of the TROPICS — hot, humid places like the MIDDLE EAST or FLORIDA in the United States. That is where they are grown. • Palm leaves: PALMATE and PINNATE. Palmate leaves, like hands, grow in a bunch at the end of a stem. Pinnate leaves, like feathers, grow at the side of a stem.
BY THE NUMBERS • While to you, they may all look the same, in truth, there are many — 2,639 to be exact — different types of palm trees. Some common examples are sugar, royal lady, wine, coconut, date, and peach palms.

HAVE YOU LEARNED SHOFTIM LATELY? Then can you tell me what type of tree Devorah sat under when she judged people who came to her? TOMER DEVORA — a date palm of course!
GIFTS OF THE PALM LULAVIM, first and foremost! Lulavim are the branches of date palms and need to be four tefachim long to be kosher. Leaves from small palm trees that are not at least that length are rendered invalid for the arba minim!
Have you ever heard of PALM WINE? It is a common alcoholic spirit in regions of Asia and Africa. It can be created from coconut palms, date palms, the Chilean wine palm, and other species. To explain how popular it is, here are some ways it is called. In the Philippines: tubâ, Algeria: lāgmi, Cambodia: Tuk tnout choo, Ghana: nsafufuo, Thailand: kache, Malaysia: kallu, Ivory Coast: koutoukou, South Africa: ubusulu, Sri Lankans: Raa, Congo: malafu, Gabon: toutou and Sierra Leones: poyo.
• The tallest palm trees can grow over 190 FEET TALL! The Quindio wax palm, Colombia’s national tree, is the tallestgrowing species of palm. • The COCO DE MER PALM TREE has the largest seeds of any plant on Earth. The seeds can be as large as 20 INCHES in diameter and as heavy as 66 POUNDS!
DID YOU KNOW

RAFFIA RIBBON. I kid you not. Raffia is a decorative string often made out of paper or synthetic materials. But some raffia ribbons really are 100% natural palm tree fiber named for the raffia palm tree. The raffia palm trees have very thick fibers and are used to make thick twine, tough ties. and woven things like mats, hats and baskets.
THE COCONUT PALM Speaking of coconuts… COCONUT PALMS are found in almost every tropical place in the world. The hairy, fibrous protective coating of the coconut, while it grows on the palm tree, is called coir, and can be used for everything, from carpet to insulation for a home. About a half a million people in the tropics rely on the coconut palms to exist. The coconut flesh is a source of food and its water, called coco frio, a THIRST-QUENCHING DRINK. The flesh can also be pressed to create coconut milk to cook with. Dried flesh is pressed to make cooking oil, soap, cosmetics, and margarine. Nothing goes to waste — leftovers are used to feed animals! Coconut water was used in Japanese and Korean hospitals as a BLOOD SUBSTITUTE for blood transfusions during World War II, until the patient would be able to receive more blood. The liquid was sterile, easily absorbed by the body, did not interfere with the red blood cells, and has a similar makeup to plasma, a prime blood component.
Ever ate HEARTS OF PALM? Let me tell you getting those hearts are no simple feat! Here’s the heart of the matter: It is a vegetable cultivated from the inner part of the palm tree. Harvesting too many of them from one tree can kill some type of palm trees, therefore only certain palms will be used.
Have you seen the latest trend in tableware, PALM LEAF PLATES? These wood-looking plates are handcrafted from fallen palm trees which are cleaned, sterilized, and then heat-pressed for casually elegant dinnerware.
Nearly every part of the palm tree can be used. The first thing these trees could obviously be used for is LUMBER. The trunk of the palm can provide SUGAR, STARCH, VINEGAR, and WINE — depending what kind of palm it is. WALKING CANES are also fashioned from the trunks of lady palms. Palms produce a variety of FRUIT, including DATES and PEACHES — and COCONUTS, of course!

BILLY BEEZ The Ultimate Indoor Play Park << Come see what the buzzzzzz is all about! >> As the conditions outdoors become less inviting, spend the day in the jungle-themed world of Billy Beez, an adventure wonderland for kids and kids at heart! The different areas in the park provide a day’s worth of excitement, and in fact, admission gives you all-day access to all Billy Beez areas* and allows for re-entry on that day. Children love the magic of the Ballistic arena, up a notch from your typical ball pit, where an air-pressurized geyser shoots up soft balls and cannons stand at the ready for visitors to blast the balls down below. Rainbow-colored racing slides, tunnels, and obstacle courses provide action and excitement wherever one may turn. The enclosed sports courts are a perfect place where kids can shoot some hoops or kick a ball around on the fake turf. Toddlers have their own area: Mini Beez. The equipment is scaled down in size with softer mats and segregated from the main park. *Honeycomb Village in Billy Beez Crystal Run site, a mini interactive playtown, with pizzeria, grocery store, and little cars to get around has a separate admission fee. << Your Safety Is Our Concern >> Admission attendants gather contact information and give wristbands with matching identification numbers to each member in the group. Gate attendants check in each group upon and entry and exit to ensure wristbands are matching. Play attendants are placed at every attraction to maintain control and safety guidelines. Cleaning attendants regularly sanitize the playground to keep the area spotless and germ-free. << Party Time at Billy Beez! >> Fabulous party packages are available in our spacious party rooms. Each of your guests get all-day play in everyone’s favorite indoor park; they can come hours before the party to enjoy our beautiful facilities. << And It’s Only Getting Better >> A kosher menu for parties, catered by Chai Pizza is available at both of our locations for guests who book parties or large group events through Billy Beez. << Because You’ll Keep Coming Back >> Ten-packs for children are available at a discounted rate, with one adult free per visit. Good cheese is easy to spot. Like Yummy Cheese- the makers of the cheesiest cheese on earth, literally.
We pride ourselves in our onerous cheese making process, which takes skill, precision, and artistry. We start bottom up, first testing our milk for its quality and purity. Good fresh milk makes for great cheese.
We then conclude with the curdling process, a complicating procedure which gives our cheeses its signature textures and flavors. Its the real thing.
Were proud to introduce our innovative new line of flavored cream cheese spreads in french onion, garlic herb, garden vegetable, or our cranberry cinnamon.
Try out our other various products like our Mozzerella, Cheddar, String Cheese , Sliced Cheese, Shredded cheese, feta cheese, & parmesan cheese and Pizza Cheeses. Pair us up with a good wine. Or just try us plain. Cuz' theres nothing like good ole' cheese done the old fashioned way.

Seven Tips to Keep Your Home Safe While You Are Away weeks in October. Callers and strangers don’t need to know that you’re not home — they just need to know that you can’t come to the phone right now. by Ann Zeilingold
3. CURTAINS CLOSED — OR OPEN?
It’s Yom Tov time, and people are going away. Some for the entire Yom Tov; some just for a few days. Murphy’s Law for those who go away: If anything can go wrong, it will go wrong while you’re away — which is arguably the worst time a household calamity can strike. Returning from a memorable Yom Tov and learning something has gone seriously wrong at home can be a real downer. To make matters worse, a house or apartment left empty while its owners are traveling is a tempting target for criminals. Therefore it’s important to take basic preventative measures to help you keep your home safe from power surges, broken pipes, and home invasions while you’re away.
1. ASK A FRIEND TO HELP A simple, albeit crucial, way to gain peace of mind while traveling is to ask a friend or neighbor to keep an eye on your house while you’re away. Ask them to drive by your home once every day or so and check on the place. Give this person a key so that they can bring your mail in, water your plants, take the newspapers off the driveway, etc. They should also have your contact information and a copy of your itinerary in case of emergencies. Do you have more than one person visiting your house while you’re away? If so, tell them about each other! The neighbor you asked to keep an eye on your home may call the police on your housekeeper, because they didn’t know that she was coming.
2. DON’T TIP OFF CRIMINALS Be careful what you say on your answering machine, voicemail, or on the web. You can’t know who exactly is reading your stuff, and don’t announce that you will be leaving your house unattended for two

It’s important to take basic preventative measures to help you keep your home safe from power surges, broken pipes, and home invasions while you’re away.
Before you leave, you may decide to close your curtains to prevent people from peering inside your home to see whether you’re there. However, closed curtains also stop those who aim to help — the police, your neighbors or friends — from seeing inside your house. So what’s your best bet? Leave your curtains exactly as you usually keep them when you’re home, since noticeable changes could hint that you’re not around — especially if your curtains are uncharacteristically left closed for two weeks.
4. THE LIGHTS ARE ON, BUT NO ONE’S HOME Don’t leave your lights on at home throughout your entire vacation in an effort to make it look like someone is in the house.
Your electric bill will end up more costly than your mortgage, and house lights blazing throughout the night might look a bit suspicious. Instead, purchase a light switch timer that can turn your lights on and off automatically according to a programmed schedule. Criminals keeping an eye on your house will notice lights flipping on and off, and will probably assume someone is doing the flipping.
5. STOP YOUR MAIL Either place a “stop” order on mail and newspapers or arrange to have a friend or neighbor pick up your mail while you’re away. Otherwise, a week’s worth of papers piled on your front step could signal to criminals that this particular homeowner is out of town. It’s easy to put your mail on hold at USPS.com.
6. FROZEN PIPES Here in Monsey, when the weather gets cold and your pipes are in danger of freezing, you have another compelling reason to leave a house key with a friend while you’re traveling. If it gets very cold, ask your friend to stop by and
check your faucets. If he or she turns on a faucet and only a few drops of water come out, your pipes may be frozen. Take other precautions like making sure your pipes are properly insulated and keeping your heat on while you’re away.
7. REMOVE YOUR SPARE KEY That plastic rock isn’t fooling anyone. If a criminal figures out you’re away on vacation, it’s likely that he or she will check your porch for a spare key. So reach under the mat, into the mailbox, above the door frame, or into the flower pot and remove your spare key before you leave. Going away over Yom Tov can be enjoyable and most people B”H don’t have calamities befall their homes. But every so often we hear of a “story” that happened to someone… These simple tips are basic and it’s the least we can do to protect our greatest asset while we are away. Have a Good Yom Tov!
