Thank you for every single enjoyable, informative, useful, and professional issue. Your article on canning evoked warm nostalgia of my mother’s kitchen, both past and present. I just wanted to inform your readership that when canning fruits such as compote and vegetable soups, they can remain fresh at room temperature for many months, whilst chicken soup, chicken, falshe fish, and fish must be refrigerated. I’m not sure about fish, but soup and chicken will last six months and beyond when jarred in the fridge. T. Lavanberg

EDITOR’S NOTE: Thank you for your letter. We’d also like to draw attention to the information featured in FYI about jarring meats, dairy products, and other non-acidic foods. These items, in order to be guaranteed as safe, should only be sealed inside of a pressure cooker to inhibit growth of harmful microorganisms.

YOUR RECIPES IN MY KITCHEN I wanted to thank you for your great publication, and for your recipe section in particular. I made a quadruple recipe of the apple honey muffins, and it still wasn’t enough. Everyone loved it! The honey cookies were delicious, too; they didn’t last the day, and I bake them on a regular basis now. The sesame chicken was scrumptious and the instructions were very clear. (I made much less sauce, though.) I loved the supper in last week’s issue with the precise instructions. It was delicious! I think I’ll incorporate it into my weekly menu. I used cherry pie filling for the baked apple instead of the cranberries, and it was a wonderful Shabbos treat. (Next time I”ll peel the apples, iy”H.) I am excited to try out the Chinese supper ideas; they look great. The beauty of your recipes is that they are easy to prepare and delicious and yet require no exotic ingredients. Please keep the supper ideas coming. My son always begs me to

make the recipes only from The Monsey View, because they’re delicious! The topics you cover are very pertinent and creative. Thanks for the Yiddishe articles; the menfolk and boys enjoyed them immensely. Please keep them coming. Much continued success,

Please tell them to let us poor mommies know early enough that they won’t be showing up anymore so that we will be prepared for what is coming. Thank you, And tell Rita we miss her... R.B.

RE: COMPOTE IN THE CRIB ‎Regarding the letter about the rented apartment, I don’t think it’s a normal thing to leave a house such a mess! I gave away my house quite a few times, sometimes for money and sometimes for free. Never did I find the house a zoo! Ninety-nine percent of the time I got it back as clean as I gave it, and I can always thank the guests that if they would tell me they hadn’t stayed over I would believe them! Never did I have to tell guests what they may and may not use. They don’t have to scrub the apartment when leaving, but guests should at least sweep the floor, throw out empty bottles... You can’t compare a home to a hotel; it’s a house!

YOUR VOICE // LOST (AND NOT FOUND) To Whom It May Concern, I was delighted when I heard that I will be getting a great cleaning lady in mid-September. And so Rita arrived. Rita was great. Although she constantly mumbled some words while cleaning, it didn’t bother us because she did her job very well. Friday, November 4th, we were waiting for Rita as usual. The kitchen was a mess; we had baked and cooked freely, as we knew Rita would come and save the situation, as she always did. But...we are still waiting; she did not show up. I can’t imagine what you are bribing her with, Mrs. Anonymous, since we paid her top dollar, provided her with transportation, served her warm, delicious meals and offered her a drink every so often. Baruch Hashem, Hashem sent us someone else in her place, however, what I am asking from you and all of you people who take cleaning ladies from other people: Cellular 4 Less

RE: COMPOTE IN THE CRIB I was surprised at last week’s letter writer who insinuated that the homeowner who rented out her house hadn’t done her research and asked references before handing over the key. One thing about inbox letters is that you don’t see the full picture with

A Reader

ARE YOU MISSING YOUR BOXES? An open letter to my neighbors across the street (and any others to whom this may apply): For the past several years there has been an ongoing issue with cardboard boxes being blown onto our lawns. Residents on the other side of our street fail to break down their cardboard boxes, and fail to secure them. As a result, we wake up daily to find boxes on our driveways and lawns. The labels on the boxes allow us to perform the mitzvah of hashavas aveida. As much as we appreciate the opportunity to perform this great mitzvah, we would prefer to see our neighbors flatten and secure their cardboard, which would eliminate the problem altogether. When the town begins to issue fines to residents on our side of the street because of garbage blowing from the other side, we will be forced to fight our fines and there will be a terrible chillul Hashem. Please help avoid this and help us take pride in our clean community.

all of the details, and I am sure that the writer actually did ask for references. Regardless of what she did or did not do, a lived-in house is not something that temporary renters should feel free to trash. No matter how much they paid, it does not give them the privilege to destroy another person’s home. And basic decency is to strip the linen from the beds before leaving, especially if there is compote or other schmutz on them! While I wouldn’t expect a family of renters to scrub the entire house, it should be left relatively presentable before they leave. They know that a tired family is returning from abroad who shouldn’t have to start scrubbing. It’s just plain rude to leave the house in such a condition.

LAST NIGHT I HAD PHONED IN MY GROcery order. Usually, the order is at my door by 9 am the next morning. However, it was almost 10 am and my order had not yet arrived. Soon I would need to leave for work, and I worried what would be with my meat order. I couldn’t have it sitting outside in the heat for all the hours I would be away. I called my husband to ask him if he could please arrange to come home at some point in the middle of the day to see if the order had arrived. I would need him to put away the items that needed to be refrigerated, like the meat. Next, I brought my daughter to the babysitter, but when I arrived, I realized I had left her lunch at home. I wasn’t too happy to have to return home until I walked up my driveway. Right then, I saw the store’s delivery truck pull up with my order, and I started to thank Hashem that I had forgotten her lunch! I was able to quickly put my perishable stuff away and call my husband that he did not have to come home.

Session 3

A Yeshiva Life of Torah and Health By: Basya Kovacs, Nutrition Counselor

A little about fitness‌ So far we've been discussing food. Now, let's talk about physical activity. While physical activity is not required in order to lose weight, it is helpful. Putting weight loss aside, physical activity has so many important benefits! Some of the benefits are a stronger heart, a better mood, and increase in strength. How does exercise help with weight loss? 1. Building muscle means you have now become a fat-burning machine. You now burn calories at a faster rate and even continue to burn calories while you are sleeping. 2. Exercise burns calories, so your overall caloric intake becomes lower because you burned some of the food calories off. However, not always does exercising mean faster weight loss. That's because the body is amazingly adaptable and can get used to anything. Whereas one used to burn 500 calories in a 45-minute treadmill session, it is now down to 400 or even 350 as the body adapts and has an easier time with it. Another rea-

son is that many people get hungry after their workouts and end up eating extra food, sabotaging their efforts.

What type of exercise can a teenage boy do? Since most of the day is spent at yeshiva, there really isn't a lot of time for exercise. Let's come up with quick and practical suggestions so that it can actually happen: 1. Basketball. If your yeshiva allows basketball, just 30 minutes burns an average of 200 calories! 2. Swimming. I know this is a summer activity, but not only does swimming burn an average of 300 calories for every 30 minutes, it also works the entire body; arms, back, core, and legs. 3. Walking or jogging. At an approximate burn of 250-300 calories for 30 minutes, this is a great workout as well. If you don't like to jog and still want high calorie-burn, try walking hills, whether on a treadmill or on the street. 4. Biking. Many boys like to bike, and if it’s common in your community, it’s a great workout as well,

with a similar calorie-burn to the abovementioned workouts. 5. There are fitness programs for boys and men sold in Jewish music stores and bookstores, which combine both cardiovascular and strength moves as well.

How much should a teen boy exercise? A reasonable amount is 3-4 days a week for 30 minutes at a time. If he wants to break it up into two 15-minute sessions or even three 10-minute sessions, that's also fine. An important consideration is safety. I'm not talking about helmets when bike riding or proper swimming technique, but rather warming up and stretching. Many adults don't even know this, so we can't expect teen boys to know this. It is very dangerous to go from 0-100 in any workout as opposed to gradually increasing the heart rate. Before starting to run, you must walk. Before starting any intense laps, start swimming slowly. Before a vigorous bike ride, start by pedaling slowly. When it comes to stretch-

Well, that's what I kept saying until my entire family was eating donuts in honor of Rosh Chodesh and I was sitting there having a TAP muffin instead. Even though they're really good, I felt left out and it took a whole lot of self control! Also, I always thought I drank enough water because I'm always drinking, but now that I'm actually counting every cup I realize that I was not having enough. I'm happy that seltzer and herbal tea count as water because it makes it easier to reach my necessary cups. The first couple of days, a few kids in my class made some comments about my new healthy snacks, but when I didn't react they stopped. It's also hard for me in shul, at the kiddush, because there is really nothing there I can have. Overall I'm feeling strong and ready for the next week! I also like that everyone is on top of my progress; it's a good push!

vation mode and you will not have enough energy. • Eat back calories burned, justifying it with rationale like “I burned so much, I can eat extra now”. Wishing everyone a wonderful and fit week!

The dos and don’ts of proper nutrition and hydration for working out:

DO • Drink before, during, and after a workout as needed. There is no specific amount required, see how you feel and how much you need. • Warm up and stretch, as outlined above • Eat an extra serving of protein after a workout if you’re feeling hungry or weak.

DON’T • Go for s p o r t s drinks. They are full of empty calories. • Exercise on an empty stomach. Your body will go into star-

Parshas

Vayeira

By Tova Fried

WHAT IS IT WE DESIRE MOST, in the deepest recesses of our hearts? For many people, there is the answer they feel they’re “supposed” to say (to serve Hashem with simcha, etc.), and then there are their immediate desires (happiness, wealth, honor, etc.). But if we could dig deeper into our hearts, and search ourselves with honesty, I think what we all desire, beyond all other desires, is that Hashem should love us and cherish us. What greater pleasure in life could there possibly be than to be cherished and loved by Hashem? For not only is this our natural desire, just as any child naturally wants to please his father, but it is the precursor to achieving any other desire in life, as Hashem Himself is the Source of all blessing. And what is the ultimate blessing for which we dream, if we would find “enough” favor in Hashem’s eyes? For most people, that would be to have successful children, depending on how you define successful. What do we mean by successful? Imagine giving a parent the following list of possible outcomes for his or her child: 1. A life of comfort (wealth) 2. A life of honor (as an askan, or baal chesed, etc.) 3. Greatness in Torah (Gadol hador, Rosh Yeshiva, tzaddik)

42 / THE MONSEY VIEW

I think it is obvious which option most of us would choose. So our deepest desire for ourselves is to be beloved by Hashem, and our greatest goal in life is to be the progenitor of righteous and holy generations. What is the key to achieving both of these desires? It says in this week’s Parsha, “Avraham is indeed to become a great and mighty nation, and through him shall be blessed all the nations of the world. For I have given him special attention because he commands his children and his household after

The Torah says that Avraham was loved and blessed because he commanded his children and household to preserve the ways of Hashem. There are several events in the Torah that stand out very strongly as pivotal moments in the history of the Jewish nation and the development of the world according to Hashem’s design. The giving of the Torah to the b’nei Yisrael in Parshas Yisro is one example, for that was the moment when we became a nation. At the beginning of the above passage, we are told about

There is so much being said today about the importance of not driving our children off the derech, but let us not be afraid to drive them on the derech. him, and they will preserve the way of Hashem, doing charity and justice, so that Hashem will bring upon Avraham all that which He has spoken of him.” (Bereishis 18:18-19) Rashi comments upon these posukim that Hashem asks, “And why do I have affection for him? Because he commands his children about Me to keep My ways.” The Torah does not say that Hashem loved and blessed Avraham because he was the one to discover Hashem, or because he chose to be thrown into a fiery pit rather than denounce Hashem.

another pivotal moment: the inception of the very people that would become that great nation, the Jewish people. Hashem reveals to Avraham that he will become the progenitor of this great and holy nation. Why will Avraham be thus blessed? Because Hashem had special affection for Avraham. And why did Hashem have special affection for Avraham? Because he commanded his children and household to preserve the ways of Hashem. If we want to achieve the best in life for ourselves and for our children, we must command our chil-

dren to honor and guard the ways of Hashem – the Torah. The Torah does not say Avraham “encouraged” his children in Torah. It says he commanded them. While we must do so with love and patience, we must not be afraid to be firm in maintaining high standards for our family. We must lead our families along the path of righteousness, and shield them from harmful influences. We should not be afraid to set limits and say no to activities that are harmful or addictive. There is so much being said today about the importance of not driving our children off the derech, but let us not be afraid to drive them on the derech. Let us not be afraid to say “no” to our children.

Saying “no” to our children begins with saying “no” to ourselves. Rabbi Frand says that he word mashpia comes from the word shapua, which means an incline. An incline, such as a roof, allows water to flow down. Our behavior flows down to our children, so in order to properly command our children to keep the Torah, we must keep the Torah ourselves. We must be examples to our children, and stay far away from hypocrisy. The higher we elevate ourselves, the greater the “slope” of our “incline,” and therefore the greater leverage we have in commanding our children in the ways of Torah. Avraham Avinu, having passed ten dif-

ficult nisyonos, was in a tremendous position to command his family. We are not Avraham Avinu. We did not bring monotheism to the world, or stand up to Nimrod. But we are Avraham’s children. We have z’chus avos on our side. Let us follow in the footsteps of our fathers and lead our children in the paths of righteousness. Clarification on an error in last week’s halacha: The tie strings of the garbage bags may only be tied together tightly, and not knotted in any way on Shabbos.

Monsey Businesses Spared in Minor Early Morning Fire (Ramapo Police Department) Several Monsey businesses located in the same strip mall escaped serious damage when a fire broke out in the eaves above one of the stores on the morning of Friday, November 11th. Monsey Fire Chief Tony Layman said that fire began above Mazal Cleaners, located at the intersection of Routes 59 and 306, and was quickly extinguished. Firemen broke into the eaves to ensure that there were no lingering flames. Nyack Hospital Expansion to Begin Late This Year (The Journal News) A 121-year-old local hospital is set to undergo a massive expansion that will likely take two years to complete. The Nyack Village Planning Board okayed Nyack Hospital’s expansion plans, which will include a twostory addition to begin this fall. The 16,300-square-foot project will be home to a redesigned emergency room and outpatient facility and is intended to better serve the changing needs of Hudson Valley residents. Hospital officials estimated that its

emergency room, which is equipped to treat 35,000 patients annually, has been seeing almost double that number in recent years. While the project does not currently include plans for additional onsite parking, the hospital does intend to lease 75 parking spaces from a nearby synagogue during construction and is exploring the possibility of adding a parking garage to the facility. Village codes do not currently require the hospital to add additional

parking spaces based on the number of beds at the hospital and the number of visits per year, but parking in the area can be challenging. “It’s tight,” admitted Dr. Mark Geller, CEO of Nyack Hospital. Hospital spokeswoman Lauren Malone said that the facility intends to hold a quarterly meeting with area residents to discuss any issues or construction-related concerns.

As Black Bears Begin to Hibernate State Asks Residents to Report Dens (Rockland Daily Voice) With the number of black bear sightings in the area increasing over the past few years, the State’s Department of Environmental Conservation is asking local residents to keep on the alert for black bear dens. Hibernation season for black bears sets in with the colder weather, and of-

ficials said that bears typically winter in rock crevices, tree cavities, or under heavy brush or fallen trees. The State is hopeful that hunters and hikers who come across bear dens will report their locations, allowing them to outfit the bears with radio collars that will be of use in tracking bear activities during

warmer weather. The local DEC office is advising anyone who comes across a bear den to keep their distance and to contact them at 845-256-3098 with details, including GPS coordinates, if possible.

Post-Election News Presidential Appointments Shocking America and the world, President-elect Trump pulled off the unexpected in last Tuesday’s elections, beating Hillary Clinton in the race to the White House. But now comes the real work. In preparation of taking office, he will have to appoint secretaries, or “heads”, to the fifteen executive departments that make up the presidential cabinet, as well as hire staff for these secretaries and himself. This includes the Secretary of State, Defense, Homeland Security, Attorney General, and more. Inauguration Day is a mere two months away, on January 20, 2017, so there is much work to be done in a short amount of time. And he has already gotten started. The first, and so far only, appointments he announced was for the position of Chief of Staff. He chose Reince Priebus, the current chairman of the Republican Party. He also announced that Steve Bannon, his campaign chairman, will be his chief strategist. There have been several names floating around for the different positions available. One of the notable candidates is Rudy Guliani, former mayor of New York and Manhattan District Attorney, who has been mentioned both for a potential position as Attorney General or Secretary of State. John Bolton, the US Ambassador to the UN under President George W. Bush, might be a candidate for Secretary of State as well. For Defense Secretary, Kelly Ayotte, the departing senator of New Hampshire who lost in a very narrow race and Lieutenant General Michael Flynt have been brought up. It is also assumed that former candidate Ben Carson will get a position, most likely that of Secretary of Health and Human Services, which would be the obvious choice with his background as a neurosurgeon. All of Trump’s picks will, of course, have to approved by the Senate, but that should pose no problem as the incoming Senate will remain majority Republican and will seek to work along with a Republican president.

The Meeting Between the Current and Future Presidents On Thursday morning, President-elect Trump met with President Obama in the Oval Office. The meeting was scheduled to last about fifteen minutes, but apparently there was much to be said, as it actually took about 90 minutes. After the meeting, President Obama and President-elect Trump met with reporters. It was the first time they sat down together and they both expressed satisfaction, and despite their lessthan-friendly history, promised to work with each other in the coming months to ensure a smooth transition.

Protests In major cities across the country, Hillary Clinton supporters have come out in droves to protest against Donald Trump. Many of them are in disbelief that Trump was actually able to pull off a win. A lot of them are also upset by the fact that Trump won the presidency based on the Electoral College alone, since Hillary won the popular vote, an occurrence that has only taken place in three instances before this election, with the last one being the 2000 victory for President Bush, another very contentious win. Many of the protests have turned violent, with five people being killed in Seattle, Washington, and a lot of destruction being caused in Portland, Oregon. It is not the first time a presidential election has been protested, but it certainly lasted longer than most. There have been threats made against Trump as well, which has prompted a massive increase of security, including the FAA enforcing a no-fly zone around Trump Tower in Manhattan where President-elect Trump currently lives as well as cement barricades being installed in front of the building. In her concession speech, the candidate herself did, of course, urge her supporters to accept Trump and move towards a unified country, but it did not seem to have much of an effect on her stunned and upset supporters who are still struggling to accept the final outcome of the election.

THE BASEMENT Last week we discussed the construction of a beautiful twofamily home. With their purchase, each of the two families, the Markowitzes and the Sterns* acquired a nice sized basement. Each one put that fabulous footage to great use, customizing the space to best suit their needs.

A Hidden Treasure Becomes Valuable Living Space Most people think of their basements as extra space to be used as a general dumping ground, dooming their basements to a lifetime of clutter, junk, and poorly planned storage. But in fact, the only difference between your basement and the rest of the house is that it is located slightly lower than the other floors, making it prime living space just waiting to be discovered. Whether you use the space for guest rooms, a playroom, or an apartment, your basement is a literal a gold mine of square footage, so it is important to consider your needs in advance to make the best and smartest use of one of your home’s most widely overlooked assets. A legal basement can be a great source of income, helping homeowners defray their mortgage costs. When designing a tenant apartment, be sure that your plans allow you to maximize your own privacy and include the most efficient use of the space in order to make the apartment more appealing to tenants. If the area is large enough, consider carving out a little extra spot for yourself, because additional space is always a bonus. If you are having two apartments in the basement, like the Markowitzes and the Sterns, include separate utility rooms in each unit, and place the entrances on opposite sides of the house to give each tenant their privacy. Including double doors at the entrance to each unit helps keep the cold and heat out, and is a great way to reduce energy bills. While they may have started with identical size basements, the Markowitzes and the Sterns customized the space to meet their own needs. By the time construction was finished, each one had created a perfect plan that worked best for their family THE MARKOWITZES*, UNIT #1: The Markowitzes are a growing family with married children who come to visit often. They need a basement with a rental apartment that has a private entrance, and the remaining space to do double duty as a guest room when needed or as the perfect play space for their children. A full bathroom in her basement play/guest area serves the needs of both her guests and

52 / THE MONSEY VIEW / November 16, 2016 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484

her little ones. Chani Markowitz calls the basement the “best used room in her house,” and “the ideal location for the kids to play,” that leaves the rest of the house both cleaner and quieter. TWO BEDROOM RENTAL: • Locate the laundry closet out of view from the entry and close to the bathroom for convenient laundry management. • Build a double wall between neighboring apartments for added privacy. • Adequate sized hallways allow for a more spacious and comfortable feeling. THE STERNS, UNIT #2: Dovid and Faigy Stern found their upstairs footage more than adequate for their needs, so they chose to convert their basement into a rentable apartment, giving them a steady monthly income. They decided to create a five room apartment with two full baths, and designed the layout so that, should the need ever arise, they could carve out the second bedroom for their own use by converting the attached walk-in-closet into an en suite bathroom. Keeping the apartment spacious and airy was an important consideration, so we kept all of the rooms a little to the larger side while also making use of variety of techniques including: • Creating nicely sized closets in the hallway and bedrooms for a roomy feel and additional storage. • Installing a double door entry, making the hallway feel a little more majestic. • Stealing a little extra space in the laundry area next to the washer and dryer for shelving and a hamper. • Adding a luxurious touch with the inclusion of a private master bathroom in the plans. THERE ARE SO MANY different ways to make good use of a basement, and using the space efficiently can make a tremendous difference in your lifestyle. People tend to think of their basement as an “extra” and as a result, they don’t pay enough attention to the untapped potential of the space underneath their feet. But with a little forethought and a lot of careful planning, your basement can become the most important and well used footage in your home.

CHAPTER 15

Sun on

Stone Recap: Malka’la gets a phone call from home. Her son isn’t feeling well. Her parents need money to feed the children. She has to tell her mother that so far, she has earned nothing. ENOUGH ALREADY. HER CHILdren were hungry, alone, abandoned. She was sitting in the lap of luxury, a reality warp, enjoying another family’s generosity when it could not sustain her where she needed generosity the most, when she returned home and had to feed her own. Enough. She had come here to collect. Wizened now to the dangers of snow, she sought other means, effective methods to procure bread. The men had it easy. It was told in Yerushalayim that those who did the minyanim, going from one praying person to the next, picking up dimes and quarters — they often came out with $100 a day. In the morning, they went for the lowhanging fruit, and at night to the wealthy pillars who supported the world with their tzedakah. She couldn’t do the minyanim. But she could meet the women. In the grocery, where they shopped. She’d find them there. In a steady stream, as they came out from shopping, she’d go for the low-hanging fruits. The coins, the change. “You bought me a coat?” she asked Gella.

56 / THE MONSEY VIEW / November 16, 2016 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484

“I did. Try it on. See if it fits.” It was a fine coat, of thick merino wool with buttons like Gella’s earrings. She slipped one arm into its heavy fabric. “You bought this for me?” “Yes.” “You want to give it to me?” “Yes. It’s yours.” How much had it cost? How could she take it? She slipped the buttons into their holes. She patted down the front of her coat. She stood up straighter. “You probably need a smaller size,” Gella said, considering her. “Petite maybe.” “It’s okay. I can wear it this way; it’s perfect. It’s more than perfect, I’ve never had one anything like this. I want to go out now. Collecting.” “But you can’t. How could you? Take another two days. See what happened when you did more than your strength allowed?” “I’m going to stand inside a grocery. And I’ll ask the people who pass through for money.” Gella raised an eyebrow, then sighed. “You’re not… embarrassed?” Malka’la might have gotten very hurt by that comment. She

nearly did get hurt. Because more than any embarrassment in asking people to share their leftover coins from the last dollar when they finished shopping, she was embarrassed by Gella, the only person on this continent she knew and could care about. But she didn’t let her benefactor’s perception hurt her. Just because Gella was generous and kind didn’t mean she understood. She obviously didn’t. If she was able to buy her a coat of real wool, when Malka’la’s own children didn’t have a single hole-less sock, and were hungering for carp — not sweets, not even fruits, but fish — Gella could never, not in a million snowstorms, fathom her life. And if she didn’t understand, she couldn’t have a say in what was shameful and what not. There is dignity in asking for help. There is dignity in providing for her children, even when the carpet from under her feet, her husband, her investments, everything, had been taken. “I’m not embarrassed,” Malka’la said. “Eat something before you go,” Gella said. “Wash. I’ll prepare some eggs.” “I think people shop early. I

want to be there. Thank you.” She slipped into the boots Gella had for her; real leather, with gold buckles. She got directions from Gella. “I’ll take you there,” Gella insisted. So they went together, and Gella went into the store to shop while Malka’la scouted out the door where people wheeled out carts filled with bags filled with food. The air was sharp, all movement frozen over, and the scent of the grocery, fresh food, and stale packaging, provided comfort.

Just because Gella was generous and kind didn’t mean she understood. She stood herself just inside the entrance. She hoped she was inconspicuous, that the store proprietor would not hear from the cashiers that she was bothering people or standing in anyone’s way. A man was first to come out. He had a small bag, perhaps with a Danish and a yogurt. “Tzedakah.” She cupped her palm upward. The man was looking straight ahead. He was very tall. “Tzedakah,” she said again. “Six yesomim.” He placed a fleshy hand into his side pockets. She waited, watching expectantly. He was a man, he

looked like he could give more, maybe would give more. He fumbled and something, maybe coins, maybe a key, jingled. A woman struggling behind a towering cart was coming out behind him, and he was holding her up. “Tzedakah,” Malka’la explained to the woman so that she, too, could use the time to fish out coins while she waited behind the stalled man at the entrance. The man looked back at the woman, noted to himself that Malka’la wasn’t watching him closely anymore, and left, heading quickly for a gleaming silver town car in the parking lot. Don’t let him get you down, Malka’la told the descending floor in her stomach. The woman gave her a pile of coins large enough she couldn’t hold it without one of them rolling through her fingers. She went inside to ask for a bag to hold the change. Two people leaked out the doorway to waiting cars while she was inside, trying to make herself understood to the grocer. She continued to stand. There were maybe four women from where she could see into the

He took out his wallet, unfolded it, took out two bills, and gave them to her. She looked at it, and saw it was two $20 bills. She put them in the pocket of her new fancy coat, checking that the lin-

If the grocery was busy, and if each person gave her something, then… maybe then. But today, she was starting to feel despondent. And hungry. So much food. People bought so much food. Carts wider than a person’s girth, brimming with all sorts of produce and goods. “Tzedakah,” she accosted the young lady who nearly passed her by with that Silver Cross baby carriage. The woman spread her hands apart, as if to say, “What can I do?” “You should be blessed,” Malka’la told her, because what should she tell her, that “You have enough to buy those snack bags

ing was without holes. Her eyes filled and she looked away, but not for long… “Tzedakah.” “Tzedakah.” “Tzedakah.” She asked three at once, giving each eye contact of piercing proportion, so they each know that she will know, when they walk away, if they gave, what they gave, and if they just walked past. It wasn’t for her, this forcing, this assailing, asking in a way that wasn’t begging but demanding. “Tzedakah,” she said softly to the short elderly woman who pushed a wire framed shopping carriage in front of her. “Please. I have yesomim at home.”

The woman took out a cloth change purse. She opened the interlocking closure and rummaged within. She withdrew a quarter. “Here,” she said, gentleness and respect reflecting off the head of the coin. When Gella came out, her cart, too, was laden with so much food it could feed all Jerusalem for two weeks. “How is it going?” she asked. “If I have other hidden millionaires like the one who gave me $40, then good. But if not, and I’m only going to get a few coins… it’s better than nothing, I suppose.” “No. You have to protect your health. Perhaps going for the small coins is worthless. You may need to go to people who can give you more. And come back on Wednesday to the grocery. And Thursday. Erev Shabbos. When people shop. Today is not good. Don’t waste your precious strength.” So she sat into Gella’s car and they rolled up the hill through the banks of snow on either side. The sun played bright this afternoon. “I’ll give you a few names. You’ll make appointments. It’s not as tough as it seems. You’ll go home with the money.” Gella was offering too much chizuk for Malka’la not to become discouraged. But for now she would believe it. She had no other choice. PERFECT POTATO KUGEL The key to successful potato kugel is keeping the potatoes in the fridge a bit before starting. Once peeled, keep them in a bowl of ice cold water. Once the potatoes are grated, you must race to put the kugel in the oven before it starts to turn gray. Master this and you can call yourself a true balabusta! INGREDIENTS: 8 potatoes 7 eggs 3/4 cup oil 1 T. salt 1/8 tsp. white pepper

DIRECTIONS: 1. Peel potatoes into a bowl of cold water. 2. Preheat oven to 450°. 3. In food processor, with the S blade, blend eggs, oil, salt, pepper, and 4 potatoes. 4. Pour into a lined 9x13” pan. 5. Use the kugel blade to grate the rest of the potatoes. Quickly mix it in with the rest of the ingredients in the lined pan. 6. Bake on 450° for one hour. Then lower to 350° and bake for another hour.

Seasoned chef: To overnight potato kugel, put the pan with the baked kugel into a deep 9x13”, which is filled with water, and cover tightly. Bake on 250° for several hours.

FARFEL IN THE OVEN This method will give your farfel that perfect texture.

MONSEY IS EXTRAORDINARY WHEN IT comes to hachnosas orchim. Families across our town graciously open their homes to out-of-town guests who need to be local for simchos or for various other reasons. It is in this week’s parsha that this special mitzvah is highlighted. While we know that the Torah is very economical with its words, in Parshas Vayeira, the Torah chooses to detail at length the hospitality that Avraham and Sarah offered to the three melachim that passed by their tent, as a model to us what true hachnosas orchim is. Hachnosas orchim is such a great mitzvah that the Talmud in Shabbos 127a, Rav Yehudah says in Rav’s name: “Gedolah hachnosas orchim yoser m’kabbolas pnei Shechinah: Hospitality is greater than the revelation of the Shechinah.” Can you imagine the zechus a family has when they choose to open their home for guests? Before one travels, it is customary to send along shaliach mitzvah gelt as a segulah, as it says that shlichei mitzvah come to no harm. When a home is used for hachnosas orchim, the entire house becomes a shaliach mitzvah. What greater insurance can one buy? IN THE SPIRIT OF THIS week’s parsha, we will explore hosting in Monsey and the three parties involved, the owners of the guestrooms, the baalei simchos who are reserving the rooms, and the guests who enjoy the accommodations. We interviewed women who had taken on different roles to share their tips with our readership.

Keep a calendar to write down the name and phone number of each potential guest, for confirmation or last minute changes. Even if your room is no longer available, write down the phone number of others who have requested the space, so you can contact them if there’s a cancellation. Call before you set up the room to confirm that the guests will indeed be coming.

Let the baal simcha know whether you have a private entrance, a separate suite, or if guests can expect to hear the children playing in the nearby playroom.

Being that guests often leave over inexpensive items, it is helpful to place a sign stating that after one week you consider all items left behind hefker. (Clarify with your Rav as to the exact nuances you have to write and what is allowed.)

CHAYA When I stayed over at someone’s house for the Shabbos sheva brachos of my niece and nephew, I was looking forward to catching up on some sleep Shabbos morning, during my once-in-a-lifetime vacation without the kids. But, much to my disappointment, the sound of children playing at 7:00 am in the room right next to where I was sleeping woke me, and there went my sleep. In the afternoon, the same scenario repeated itself. I arrived home from my much-anticipated vacation tired and exhausted, wishing I would have known that it was not a private guest suite.

Find out about food arrangements; whether the baal simcha will be serving refreshments or if you should be serving your guests. Don’t feel guilty to say that your room is unavailable, even when it is unoccupied. Give it out gladly half of the time rather than halfheartedly all of the time. The worst thing you can do is feel abused, become resentful, and then stop altogether. It is very thoughtful to keep a hospitality basket with items that people are prone to forget: candles, tums, toiletries, rain bonnet, nail scissors, towels etc. Double check that all the basics are there, so that the guests shouldn’t be put in an uncomfortable spot to ask.

LIBA I arrived to a beautiful, luxurious guest suite. The furniture, linens, and wallpapers were magnificent and I looked forward to spending my Shabbos there. However, there were no tissues anywhere in the apartment. It was very uncomfortable for me to have to knock in to my gracious hostess to ask for tissues, but did I have a choice?

Call in advance. Emergencies do happen, and everyone understands that, but try to be as organized as possible.

Communicate with the hostesses and guests as to what type of accommodations are needed, and to confirm whether they will be coming or not.

Even though you reserved the room or apartment for a Shabbos, you don’t own the place. If you had spoken to a hostess about letting a specific person use it, please speak to her before passing it on to someone else, or offering the apartment to someone who’s making a simcha down the road.

Let your guests now about refreshments, where they are meant to eat and what you are providing them with.

It is nice to prepare a hospitality package for out-of-town guests with some chocolate, cake, candles, an itinerary, etc. Be upfront with the hostess as to what you are providing.

Communication is very important. If you canceled, don’t assume the room is still available for your other guests or for a guest who changed their mind.

78 / THE MONSEY VIEW / November 16, 2016 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484

RUCHY I got a call on Friday morning that the guests I was expecting would be going elsewhere, being that the baal simcha had obtained a private home whose owners were away for the month, and would be putting up a few of her guests there. So I called the next family on my waiting list, who was happy to hear that the room was available for them. They arrived later that afternoon and settled in comfortably. As I was getting ready for licht tzinden, there was a knock on our door. In walked a breathless couple — the original guests — wanting to claim the room they had reserved! It seemed that the electricity bill had not been paid while the owners of the private home were away, and upon entering, they were greeted with dark, stuffy, putrid-smelling accommodations, and decided to go back to the original plans. The only problem is that they forgot to communicate. It was very uncomfortable to have to let this family know that their room was no longer available as Shabbos was being ushered in.

GUE TS S Call a few days prior to confirm that you’re coming, as things do happen. Take care to leave the lodgings in the same condition that you received it in. Don’t assume that your hostess will babysit for you. Discuss everything beforehand, and don’t take advantage of their kindness. Let your host know approximately when to expect you, and don’t arrive within minutes to the zman, leaving them wondering whether you will be coming or not. Don’t take advantage and ask to stay for another few days without prior discussion. Be careful about where you tzind licht.

LEAH I was serving the soup on Friday night when I smelled fire. We went downstairs to investigate, and realized it was coming from our guests’ quarters. We felt we had to go in, although we would have loved to respect their privacy. Upon entering, we saw that the guests had lit the candles directly on the tablecloth and had ruined the tablecloth and the table underneath. Baruch Hashem, nothing serious happened, but a little consideration and concern about safety would’ve prevented the scare and the damage.

Be careful about leaving unsafe items around.

SURI Be careful not to leave over any medication, especially when going away for Shabbos, since people tend to take just a pill or two with no markings of what they are. Go through the room thoroughly to make sure you did not leave anything behind. A small gift, chocolate, flowers, a game for the children, or a nice note is always appreciated, but don’t overdo it. People loan their lodgings for chesed, and will feel uncomfortable with costly gifts for using their premises for one Shabbos. Before you leave turn off the air conditioners, lights, and refrigerators, when it’s obvious that it was on only for you.

My toddler, who had been playing in the playroom which is right near my guest suite, came upstairs with some green gook around his mouth. I was trying to figure out what it could be. Upon entering the guest room, I saw a bottle of something that looked to be medication spilled on the floor. I panicked and called Poison Control and only relaxed when they told me that it was antacid medication and I shouldn’t worry. I shuddered to think what could have happened had it been something less innocent.

With the upcoming simcha season many people will open their doors to a stream of guests. What better way to welcome them than to pamper them with a personal goody package? Whether you’re hosting guests for Shabbos or are a baal simcha juggling all the details that making a simcha entails, assembling your own welcome package shouldn’t be much of a fuss. It’s actually quite simple to make a lovely, inviting package. Whatever your individual needs and spending limits are, I invite you to explore and discover how exciting, attainable, and budget-friendly hostess packages can actually be. I’ve prepared a variety of three packages, each with its own unique style, color choice, and price point. Feel free to further explore with your own ideas. The sky’s the limit!

Tips to Top It Off • IN ANY of the featured packages you can include a handwritten note for a personal touch, or stickers with your monogrammed initials for a more professional look. • ADD A pop of color with multi-colored or uniquely designed napkins or tissue paper. • MAGAZINES ARE usually very appreciated, as many travelers often forget to bring along reading material. • TOILETRIES ARE also important to keep wellstocked, as sometimes guests forget to pack vital products. Many pharmacies carry travel-sized shampoo, soap, toothpaste, and even deodorant that your guests will appreciate. • TO CUT down on the cost of chocolate and nuts, substitute home-baked goods, which actually lend a very personal flavor to your package. • BISCOTTIS WITH varying toppings, chocolate covered pretzels, and chocolate log are a great way of further enhancing your package.

Boxes: Ikea. Prices ranging from $.99, $1.99 & $7.99 | Napkins and ribbons: Jubilee | Acrylic boxes and amenity boxes: Henly’s Gifts | Candle votives and mesh bags: Amazing Savings

TAKING CHARGE OF YOUR HEALTH

n previous weeks we touched upon the multiple benefits and multiple downsides that medications have, including depleting your body of key nutrients it requires to function. Clearly, not everyone is going to have the same risk for a nutrient depletion given differences in diet, lifestyle, and genetics. But the longer you take a drug, and the more drugs you take, the greater your risk will be. One perfect example is Nexium, Prilosec, and Protonix (Proton pump inhibitors). They are one of the most widely prescribed classes of drugs in the U.S. they are used to treat acid reflux. Stomach acid is vitally important for your ability to absorb and/or utilize many key nutrients, including iron, calcium, magnesium, and vitamin B12. These drugs carry an FDA black box warning that they can increase your risk for bone fracture and cause your magnesium levels to drop dangerously low, increasing the risk for seizures and serious heart arrhythmias. Its very important to monitor for, these potentially severe nutritional depletions. And there are many such nutrientdepleting medications. Metformin, a frequently prescribed

drug for diabetes, causes B12 deficiency, especially if you take it for more than four years. ACE inhibitors and thiazide diuretics used to treat high blood pressure deplete zinc. The list goes on and on. If you look closely at the multitude of ways that our lives, diets, foods, and medication use have changed over the past 100 years, it becomes clear that there may be gaps in your nutrition, as well as higher needs for certain nutrients based upon your age, gender, personal health history, use of medications, and level of exposure to environmental toxins and other stressors. It is often through optimizing essential nutrients that your health improves. Taking St. John's wort for depression is no better than taking Zoloft if the problem is B6 or B12 deficiency. Taking ginseng or rhodiola for energy won't help if you don't have enough iron. Focus on the foundation of nutrition. I hope you are beginning to see that your diet may not be enough to ensure that you are getting all the key nutrients necessary for life in the 21st century. Fortunately, we can draw upon a large body of research on nutrition and nutritional supplements to help us in our pursuit of better health. it is important that you learn how to take charge of your own health, so that you can make informed decisions for you and your family. It can be hard to sort through the noise. If you have a particular illness or disease, you've probably already started researching what nutritional support may be beneficial for you. But even if you're generally healthy, it's still important to be aware that low levels of key nutrients can significantly stress your body. That is why we want to help you recognize your risks for being deficient in certain nutrients, figure out what nutritional supplements might help you address those deficiencies, and know what to look for when purchasing nutritional supplements for yourself and your loved ones. You want to make sure you fasten your seat belt when it comes to nutrition and, when appropriate, take the supplements that offer the most protection. If you have a chronic health problem, you might be surprised by how much better you feel when you choose the correct nutritional and supplement regimen. You might even be able to slow the progression of your disease. You can feel confident that you are supporting your health by optimizing your nutrition—without wasting money or taking dozens of capsules or tablets each day.

THE WELCOME MAT The doormat got this cheery name when friendly greetings were displayed across them, welcoming visitors to homes. Doormats are placed immediately outside or inside the entrance to keep out undesirable elements:

DIRT Our shoes pick up mud, snow, and dirt as we walk. In fact, most grime in the house comes from outside.

GERMS Even in the cleanest of towns, the germs on the streets are plentiful, and we don’t want them tracked onto our floors.

CHEMICALS Toxic chemicals used on lawns and gardens outside stick to our shoes, which we want to wipe away before coming inside.

TIP: Regularly disinfect your doormat with a spray like Lysol to keep this germ trap from spreading indoors.

NOT A SIMPLE MATTER:

In the KITCHEN

Both in New York City and in the U.K. there have been cases of landlords being sued after tenants tripped over doormats. As per NY Code (which is sometimes hard to decipher) it seems that doormats in public buildings are considered to pose safety concerns, as well as a fire hazard.

That’s a royal welcome mat to you! A red carpet is traditionally used to mark the route taken by heads of state on ceremonial and formal occasions, and has in recent decades been extended to use by VIPs and other dignitaries at formal events. The expression is also use figuratively, pertaining to anyone who gets a deferential welcome or treatment. It’s the kind of hello Trump will get come January 20.

ARE YOU A DOORMAT? Don’t let yourself be stepped on! A person who doesn’t stand up for himself and gets treated badly is referred to as a doormat.

SAY HELLO TO MATS AROUND THE HOUSE:

PLACE MAT

ROLL OUT THE RED CARPET!

ANTI-FATIGUE MATS Anti-fatigue mats are designed for people who work in a standing position for prolonged periods of time. Its ergonomic pattern and cushioning underlay stimulates blood flow and subconsciously sets the person in motion. This results in less fatigue and minimizes back pain, foot pain, weariness, and stress. Who benefits from this technology? • Surgeons • Assembly line workers • Homemakers who spend a lot of time standing in the kitchen • Trade show attendees • Workers who use standing desks

CLEAN ROOM MATS The purpose of a clean room mat is to keep sterile areas in hospitals and labs that require ultimate protection from dirt, bacteria, and any contamination brought from outside. Clean room mats are tacky, sticky, non-slip mats that possess multiple layers of clean film that effectively capture dirt and dust from foot traffic and wheels. Peel-off mats are made up of multiple sheets of polyethylene film coated with acrylic adhesive that traps particles. Each layer peels off to reveal a new clean surface.

SHOES ON THE MAT You can find them at the entrance of any particular homemaker’s domain, but in Asian countries, it is traditional to leave your shoes at the entrance and change to slippers inside, or to walk barefoot in the house. Traditionally, Asian homes were raised about two feet off the ground, and it was customary to remove shoes in the entry, on ground level, and to step up in socks. Even in newly constructed homes in Asia, the entrance is usually lower than the rest of the home, keeping out dirt and weather mess. In Asia, since tables were low and people sat on the floor to eat, sleep, and to do all their activities, keeping the floors clean were all that more important. It is also Asian belief that feet shouldn’t be confined to shoes all day, but that pressure points on the feet should be stimulated by walking around shoeless. Today, western furniture has taken over the average Asian home, but these traditions remain.

DID YOU KNOW? The placement of spare keys under mats is one of the most common causes of burglary. Time to implement some creativity in finding a hiding spot for your key!

Just remember when visiting Asian (and many American) homes to wear clean socks with no holes, because you may be asked to remove your shoes!

November 16, 2016 / THE MONSEY VIEW / 109 ANSWERS:

The children’s ages are 2, 2, and 9. How did the officer figure it out? The product of the ages is 36. Using this one can make the following combinations of ages: 1,36, 1 1,18, 2 1,12, 3

1, 9, 4 1, 6, 6 2, 9, 2 2, 6, 3 3, 3, 4 After the man had said that the product of the ages is equal to 36, the officer didn’t have enough information. Then he was told that the sum is equal to number of shops in front of the office. The sums

of the combinations are listed below. 1,36, 1 sum = 38 1,18, 2 sum = 22 1,12, 3 sum = 16 1, 9, 4 sum = 14 1, 6, 6 sum = 13 2, 9, 2 sum = 13 2, 6, 3 sum = 11 3, 3, 4 sum = 10 So since he replied by saying that this still wasn’t enough

information, the sum of the ages should be 13, because otherwise he would have known the ages immediately. So now he was left with: 1, 6, 6 sum = 13 2, 9, 2 sum = 13 The last statement is that that the oldest child loves chocolate. So if there is an oldest child, the officer concluded that they must be 2, 2, and 9.

A man would like to buy a new health insurance. An officer taking care of these matters asks the man how many children he has. The man answers, “I have three of them.” “What are the ages of your children?” the officer asks. The man answers, “The product of the ages is equal to 36.” The officer replies, “This is not enough information, Sir!” “Sorry that I was a little bit unclear, but the sum of the ages is

equal to the number of shops in front of your office,” says the man. The officer says, “This still isn’t enough information, Sir!” The man replies: “My oldest child loves chocolate.” The officer finally says, “Thanks for your cooperation; I now know the ages.” Are you as smart as the officer? Can you figure out the ages of the children?

Real Estate When There’s Place in the Heart and in the Home ONE OF THE NICEST ASPECTS TO PURCHASING A home in Monsey is the size of the homes. Lots of prospective homeowners coming from other areas are amazed at the yards, the room sizes and room counts, and of course the roaming deer! Just yesterday I met a nice young family moving from Boro Park to Pomona. They are moving to a home with five bedrooms and three bathrooms. She is coming from a small apartment with three children. Her current apartment has only two closets and her kitchen has barely any cabinets and counter space. This is not uncommon. When a family makes a move to Monsey, it’s not only about the house price and the house size. It’s also about the quality of life. Nowadays it seems like a home or even a condo is never big enough. The condos are designed to suit a growing family with space for furniture, playrooms, large kitchens with sukkah porches, and enough bedrooms to even have one set aside for Shabbos guests. The homes are on park-like settings on quiet country roads, and many homes have either basements or lower levels that are finished off into sitting areas and bedrooms. I have personally made many Shabbos simchos, and it is never difficult to find homes suitable to host numerous Shabbos guests, whether in a finished basement or in a specially designed guest suite. Some neighborhoods actually have hachnosas orchim apartments to make it easier to invite guests. While this concept is extremely warm and welcoming, what are the legalities of having these guest suites? Are bedrooms allowed in basements? Can a new homeowner do whatever they want to their home, even renovate a part of their home for a hachnosas orchim apartment? The answers to these questions are not simple. I want to preface that I am not an attorney or the building inspector. I also want to be clear in that before any renovations are done to a home, research must be done by the homeowner, and or contractor, as to what the process and the legal procedures are.

110 / THE MONSEY VIEW / November 16, 2016 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484

Anyone can designate a bedroom in their home as a hachnosas orchim room, but the room must be legal for sleeping.

If one lives in a village, the rules and procedures are dictated by the village. If one lives in an unincorporated part of the town, then the town determines the process and rules. Very basically, anyone can designate a bedroom in their home as a hachnosas orchim room, but the room must be legal for sleeping. If a homeowner wants to fix up a basement with bedrooms, they must first get a permit from the correct municipality. If the basement is below ground, basement egress windows most likely will be required. There must be a way for the inhabitants of a bedroom to escape the room in case of fire. The contractor and architect are key players in this process. A hachnosas or-

chim apartment is a different story. Will this apartment have a kitchen? Will there be a stove? Will this be a rental apartment? Again, the local municipality dictates the code. Usually, an actual kitchen would not be allowed. A kitchen-like area without a stove may be okay. Because the codes differ from village to village, people have to do their own research. In some areas holiday kitchens are allowed, as well as summer kitchens and motherdaughter apartments. In other ar-

eas this is not allowed. Some areas allow boarders, people who live in your home and pay rent, but do not have any kitchen facilities, while some areas don’t. Moving to Monsey, or even from an apartment to a home in Monsey, will completely change the quality of one's life. Part of what makes our community so great is the generosity of our neighbors, especially in the opening up of homes to host guests.
