DAVEN FOR SHAYA LEVY, TOO הדלקת הנרות מוצאי שבת
Everest Equity Company , Inc.
There was an article last week about the Tanzers, which was a very important mention; Hashem should help that אלכסנדר זושא בן עליזה should have a refuah shleimah. I just wanted to point out that there was another man, Shaya Levy, who was in the same accident, ישעיה דוב יהודה בן שושנהand he is a very, very special person. He does so much for children in hospitals, constantly going and coming and entertaining in all different ways just to make them happy. He was in that same accident and he also needs a refuah shleima. Please have these special men in mind in your tefillos. Besuros tovos. L.G.

SLEEP SCHEDULING I want to thank you for providing an informative issue on sleep. It has already made an impact on my life. For a long time I’ve been telling one of my kids that he has to sleep more, and now I was able to show him the chart of healthy amounts of sleep for his age. He finally understood how important it is for him to sleep more than the little that he does! Thank you, A Grateful Reader

I really appreciate the article that you had a few weeks ago on living well with neighbors. I wish that my neighbor would have read the article! (Maybe she did, but unfortunately, I am not sure she took anything to heart!) I try very hard not to complain about other people, but when my upstairs neighbors’ kids jump rope in the dining room and make my light fixtures fall down, I think that is cause to complain. And there there was the pogo stick! The kids used a pogo stick in one of the rooms, and the vibrations were strong enough to send some of my fine china from their perch in the china cabinet. Dishes were smashed and shattered! Please, dear neighbors upstairs, ask me how your noise and vibrations affect me, and change your ways! Wishing you all the best, A Reader with a Headache

TOO MUCH OF A GOOD THING According to the National Sleep Foundation, you wrote, schoolaged children need 9 to 11 hours of sleep, and should not have more than 12 hours of sleep. I sometimes feel like the odd man out when friends voice their surprise and disapproval when they hear that my six-year-old goes to sleep at 9:00pm. With him being up at 7:30, ten and a half hours is, in fact, quite a sufficient amount of shuteye for a child of his age, as per the NSF. In this generation, I find that some mothers are so desperate to turn the noise off in the house as early as they can, and they may be putting their children to sleep too early in the name of “good scheduling.” A six-year-old does not belong in bed at 6:00 pm. With sleep deprivation being a huge problem, and a major topic of discussion, we often forget that there’s a problem at the opposite end of the spectrum: too much sleep is not healthy for a child. Of course, each child is different, but a child who is experiencing difficulty falling asleep does not always need a sleeping aid; he may just need a later bedtime. T. L.

As told to: Basya Lev
I FIND IT AMAZING WHEN children ask for something and Hashem responds to them. Yesterday I went through my cabinets and found the open bag of taffies my husband had bought for when the neighbors came sukkah-hopping last year. I still had half a bag left over. My oldest daughter refuses to eat it because she claims it is not good for her teeth. My younger daughter would eat it, but many times she copies her older sister and will also say that it isn’t good for her teeth. I decided the time had come to get it out of the house. At first I was going to give it to Bikur Cholim when I went to help make the lunches that are sent to the hospitals. However, I forgot to bring it when I was there. I only remembered it later on in the afternoon. I decided instead of waiting another week, I would ask my daughter’s babysitter if she wanted it. I placed it in a visible spot so I wouldn’t forget. When I got home, I asked her if she wanted it or perhaps her kids would want to bring it to school. She said that that night was her daughter’s birthday and she had asked a little while before for chewing candies. However, she did not have any. Therefore, she gladly took it and said her daughter was going to be thrilled when she surprised her with it.

YOUR EVENING PLANS ARE ABOUT TO CHANGE...
EVERYONE HAS IT ON THEIR FRIDGE In the most prominent place, the heart of every Jewish home, is the kitchen. The fridge is the center of it all. By advertising your business or service on fridge doors across Monsey, you’ll have a direct connection with the target audience in the places that matters most. If that wasn’t enough, consider this! People open their fridge on an average of 20 times a day. Multiply that by a typical 5 person household and all those times you pass through without even opening the door... When advertising with us, your business will be seen on an average of 36,500 times a year, per household! it’s a win-win investment that you can’t afford to lose

Session 4
A Yeshiva Life of Torah and Health By: Basya Kovacs, Nutrition Counselor
AS WE DISCUSSED LAST WEEK, if we overeat on Shabbos, we can undo an entire week’s worth of great eating in a 24-hour period. For anyone watching their health or waistline, Shabbos can be a deal breaker. Planning to eat well on Shabbos starts by eating well throughout the week. It is so common for people to undereat all week either because they are too busy to eat, or because they are trying to lose weight. Then, when faced with the abundant, delicious foods that come every Shabbos, all self-control goes out the window. Undereating almost always backfires, because the hunger and deprivation make us more likely to overeat eventually. So try not to come to a Shabbos meal starved! Now, let’s break down what a healthy Shabbos would look like, beginning with Erev Shabbos.
Friday: Try to get in some exercise! Many
50 / THE MONSEY VIEW / November 30, 2016 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484
boys have a slightly lighter schedule on Friday, so this is a great day to incorporate some physical movement such as playing ball, swimming or weightlifting. Don’t skip meals! It is common for teens to be off schedule on Friday and fill up on foods such as kugels and cakes instead of eating proper meals. A cup of cholent with a salad can be a great lunch, is much more nutritious than kugels and cake and will help you stay full until the seudah. Many people have a minhag to taste the Shabbos food before Shabbos. The best choice for this would be a bowl of chicken soup or a small piece of fish.
Friday Night: The Friday night meal should be as similar as possible to a normal weekday meal in terms of calorie intake. This means: STARCH: Replace your normal starch with a slice of challah. Keep in mind that a slice of challah
should be approximately the size of a slice of rye bread! If you want to weigh it, it’s one ounce. Some people prefer to have our delicious potato kugel as a starch, in which case you would have just a kezayis of challah. PROTEIN: Protein should also be portion controlled, so a slice of fish and a small piece of chicken would be about right. FATS: Filling up on dips and adding dressings to salads can add hundreds of calories and lots of fat grams to your meal. A tablespoon of one dip (or three teaspoons of three different dips), and a tablespoon of light salad dressing is a good amount. VEGETABLES: Vegetables are unlimited on our plan, so take advantage! This is the best way to fill up at any meal, and especially at a Shabbos seudah. Vegetables from the soup, fresh salads and roasted or grilled vegetables are all great options. DESSERT: The ideal dessert is something portion controlled,
THE BALANCING BOCHUR: Sruli Englander* Height: 5'8 Starting weight: 180 pounds Current weight: 175 pounds Weight lost this week: 2 pounds I’m experiencing the weirdest side effects! The obvious one is that my clothing is getting all big on me, so I may need to shop soon. But there are other side effects, too! I have more energy, I focus better in yeshivah, and my mom says I’m calmer at home and fight less with my siblings. Mrs. Kovacs told me that it’s because my blood sugar is steady (whatever that means), that I’m eating brain foods which help me focus and that I’m drinking a lot of water which helps as well. I don’t get all this lingo, but I like what I’m feeling, so I’ll stick to it! *name changed for privacy with the calorie information on the packaging, so that you are conscious of what you are eating. Look for approximately 100-150 calories and less than three grams of fat. Alternatively, a small bowl of ices or a cup of compote without sugar makes a great dessert.
Shabbos Day: Lots of people like to start their Shabbos morning with a mezonos, such as cake or crackers. We recommend finding an option that allows you to keep this routine, while still keeping calories and fat in check. There is a variety of lower-calorie, low-fat, high-fiber baked snacks on the market that tastes delicious but won’t negatively affect your weight. Our clients love our TAP muffins and cookies which are filling and low calorie. They’re available at our Monsey location (7 Twin Avenue) or at Evergreen Kosher Market. The Shabbos day seudah offers a variety of options. Here are the best and worst of them:
BEST: Fish, eggs, cholent, chickpeas, cold cuts, sugar-free cucumber salad, fresh salads, and ices or compote which is sugar free WORST: Chopped liver, potato kugel (unless it’s Tanya’s kugel), cole slaw, kishke, parve ice cream and cake The ideal Shabbos seudah would include a slice of challah, a few ounces of fish, about ¾ cup of cholent, 3-4 slices of cold cuts, and a good amount of vegetables. On Shabbos afternoon some great options are fruits and portioncontrolled snack bags such as popcorn and pretzels in one-ounce bags. Beware of the huge bags of fresh popcorn! There can be 15-30 servings of popcorn in there! A few fruits and a snack will hold most people over until the end of Shabbos. On the short winter Shabbosim, it isn’t a good idea to have a full Shalosh Seudos as well as a full Melave Malka. During the winter months we recommend washing on a half a matza in order to fulfill the mitzvah of Shalosh Seudos, and having a more complete Melave Malka that includes a serving of starch as well as protein. Now here’s the good news: We always recommend that our clients who are eating well all week treat themselves to a slice of pizza once a week in place of a full meal! So
if your friends or family are having pizza on Motzei Shabbos, feel free to join them for a slice! Just make sure to have some vegetables or a salad along with your pizza, because most people (especially teenage boys) don’t feel full from just one slice. Enjoy every bite and enjoy the feeling of taking care of your health and making good choices!

Parshas
Toldos
By Tova Fried
WHEN MOSHE* AND ESTHER* received the devastating fatal diagnosis for their infant son, they immediately reached out to their Rebbe. Why did Hashem do this? What defect could Hashem have perceived in them that could warrant a diagnosis like this? And could they fix it? The Rebbe replied that the child would be fine, and gave very specific advice on what they needed to strengthen. Indeed, the disease completely disappeared, and the doctors soon declared the child to be healthy, explaining that in some cases the child only appears to have the disease when he does not. Genetic tests confirmed the child’s health. Their son is a successful – and healthy – yeshiva bachur today, baruch Hashem. People respond to adversity in different ways. Some people, such as Moshe and Esther, turn their gaze inward to see where they can improve. Other people look outward, searching for someone or something to blame. In this week’s Parsha, Eisav faced a great challenge. He returned from his hunt to discover that Yaakov had received the blessing that Yitzchak had intended to give to Eisav. Eisav became deeply grieved, and in his anger he resolved to kill Yaakov. The very next action Eisav took was to find a new wife, a daughter of Yishmael. The Shem MiShmuel points out that Eisav’s action indicates that he assumed that the cause of his mis-
56 / THE MONSEY VIEW
fortune must be something outside of himself – perhaps among his wives. He reasoned that if he took a new wife, this time not from among the Canaanim, then maybe he could reverse his fortune. It was beyond Eisav’s comprehension that there could be anything wrong with himself. The Shem MiShmuel writes that this blindness to his own flaws is hinted at in the name “Eisav.” The letters of the name Eisav can be rearranged to form the word “asui” – made, complete. Eisav saw himself as perfect. In fact, the gematria of Eisav equals the gematria of shalom (peace, completion) – both are 376. Eisav was at peace with himself, content in his perceived completion. Whereas most people suffer from feelings of inner conflict resulting from the awareness of one’s need to improve, Eisav was perfectly content to be exactly who he believed himself to be, because he believed himself to be just fine exactly as he was. Yaakov, on the other hand, saw himself as a lowly person who needed to work on himself. The name of a person is an indication of his inner essence. The name “Yaakov” means “heel.” Yaakov was a person who was always looking to climb higher, seeing himself as having room to grow. Yaakov’s name was later changed to Yisroel, but he retained the essence of Yaakov even then. Whereas it is a transgression to refer to Avraham Avinu as Avram, the
name he was called before Hashem gave him a letter “hey,” it is not a transgression to continue referring to Yisroel as Yaakov – indeed, the Torah itself later refers to Yisroel as Yaakov. (Brachos 13a) Commenting on this, the Shem MiShmuel quotes his father that even after Yaakov’s name was changed to Yisroel, he continued to view himself as a lowly heel, seeking to improve himself. Yaakov’s approach is in complete contrast to that of Eisav. Even after growing and reaching new heights – even having his name changed to Yisroel – Yaakov still saw himself as a lowly person with room for improvement. Eisav, on the other hand, saw himself as perfect even without having developed beyond the crude nature with which he was born. It’s easy for us to make excuses for ourselves rather than to take responsibility for who we are and the choices we make – but in the end, we are really just shortchanging ourselves. Making excuses means not making any changes; in order to grow we must change, and in order to change we must take responsibility. We must look inward, like Yaakov, in order to achieve real growth; looking outward, like Eisav, allows one to blame others and circumstances. It may be difficult to scrutinize ourselves and seek areas to improve, but in the end the one who will benefit most is ourselves. *Names have been changed.

Hadlakas Neiros
One of the seven mitzvos that the chachamim were mesakin is הדלקת נר שבת ויום טוב, to tzind licht lekovod Shabbos. There are two reasons for the mitzvah of hadlakas neiros: 1. Kavod Shabbos 2. Oneg Shabbos • Every person is mechuyav to have candles lit in one’s home, but the actual mitzvah of lighting the candles was given to the woman, as a reward for all the work she does at home. Chazal call this mitzvah אורו של עולם and say there are big zechusim for women who are particular with the mitzvah of lighting candles l’kavod Shabbos. • One who is nizhar and prepares nice candles with אהבה וחיבוב המצוה will have children and sons-in-law who are talmidei chachamim and yirei shamayim. It expresses kavod Hashem and שלום בית. • If one has candles burning in the house before Shabbos, which were not lit specifically for Shabbos, they are not considered ner Shabbos. • The Remah says one should light two candles, one k’neged “zachor” and one k’neged “shamor” (כנגד זכור וכנגד )שמור. The lights should shine forth as hiddur mitzvah. • It’s a minhag to add an additional candle for each child that is born into the family. • Some have the minhag to add an additional candle after experiencing a nes (miracle). • One may not light less candles than one is accustomed to lighting. However, some people have the minhag of only lighting two candles when lighting away from home. • If one is accustomed to lighting tall candles, one should make sure to always do so and not light shorter candles. An exception to this would be if one has the custom to light shorter candles during the summer weeks and taller ones during the
winter weeks. • If one forgot to light candles one Shabbos, one has to add another candle every week. In today’s age, due to electricity, some hold one is not mechuyav to add another candle. In such circumstances, one should consult with a Rav. • During licht tzinden one should daven to be gebentcht (blessed) with ehrlich doros. • One should make sure that every room that one is planning to use on Shabbos should have some form of light, or a door can be opened, which will let in light. • One is not yotzei hadlakas neiros with electric light, and one may not make a bracha over electric lights. This applies to hospitals, etc. • After one has recited the bracha one should put down the match or lighter on the tray. It is muttar for someone else to remove the matches. • One should light the candles in a prominent place where one’s husband will be able to see the lights whilst he is making Kiddush. • The candles should not be moved to another place after they have been lit. If it is necessary to move them after lighting one may do so until shekiya. • If the woman is not home for Shabbos her husband should light the candles. If neither parent is home the children should light the candles. • It is a minhag for a woman who has given birth not to light candles the first Shabbos after birth. Her husband should light for her, even if
she is home. • One one may not use the flames for any other purpose. However one may use the fire from one Shabbos candle to light another candle. • If a man is a guest in someone’s house for Shabbos, without his wife, he can light candles in his room or he can partake of the mitzvah of hadlokos nairos by paying a little money to the hostess. • There are some communities or kehillos where single girls are noheg to light candles. • One should not light candles before plag hamincha. • After one has tzind licht one may not do any melachos and neither may one daven mincha. • If one has to perform a melacha after lighting candles (and it’s before the zman of Shabbos) one should have the kavana (intention) to do so and stress that one is not being mekabel Shabbos yet. After the melacha is performed one should say that one is being mekabel Shabbos. • If one is a guest in someone’s house, one should light candles in the room where one sleeps. If one wants to tzind together with the hostess, one should preferably light before the hostess lights. • If one is a guest and sleeps in one place but eats in another place one should light where one sleeps, and make sure to have hanaah from the candles for a few minutes. If this is inconvenient or difficult, one may she tzind where she eats but should tzind before the hostess. This also applies to young couples who eat at their parents’ houses.

You’ve seen the signs and the emoji key chains. You’ve spotted the bumper stickers. Ever wondered what’s behind the hype and electrifying energy? Pulling off an auction of massive proportions takes skill, staunch devotion and tolerance for a gamut of emotions. The movers and shakers behind the RCCS auction open up about the hard work, the highs and the hilarity behind the annual movement. Unless you wouldn’t notice a tree trunk in front of your windshield, you’ve spotted the emojis splashing cholei Yisroel’s plight across town, and are feeling the vibes of what it means to live with cancer – and how it feels to battle it together! Emojis are the “Jewish pink ribbon” this year, spreading cancer awareness and raising crucial support for cancer patients. But long before the signs went up, emotions were already running high.
STEP ONE OF THE FUN The Jewish world was still echoing with reverberations of Yell-ow, but Esty Kohn, RCCS auction coordinator, was already dreaming about the 2016 auction. Esty started running the annual auctions 11 years ago, before she had a family to think about. As her family grew, the auction grew right along with it. What keeps Esty at it year after year, when she has more than enough on her plate? Esty sums it up in one sentence: “After all these years, I consider RCCS part of my DNA.” Emails from Esty about auction-related details are sent out from the moment she opens her eyes in the morning until unearthly hours in the evening. What does she feel about her 24-hours-a-day, 6-days-a-week commitment? “Pride. The volunteers, sponsors, vendors and hostesses we deal with are so forthcoming and just amaze me again and again. I’m so proud to be part of Klal Yisroel, so proud to be part of
60 / THE MONSEY VIEW / November 30, 2016 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484
RCCS.” There’s nothing like a good laugh to keep her going through the overwhelming weeks. Esty recalls a woman who was anxious to win, calling in the hullabaloo of the final days leading up to the auction. A volunteer sheepishly approached a harried Esty with the caller’s urgent request: She wants to know the dimensions of the chandelier prize, to see if it would fit in her dining room.
GETTING IT OFF THE GROUND The number of correspondences about this auction between Esty and Ricky Blau, the indomitable coordinator of the insanely creative GCNY Marketing team, are in the thousands. Yossi Blumenfeld, CEO of GCNY, and his brilliant creative team have accompanied the auction from its formation through its de-
velopment, and are still faithfully at work to fuel the momentum. When Ricky thinks about RCCS, she feels optimism. “When I see what kind of help RCCS gives to families, mothers, fathers and children, I’m filled with optimism that the sick will get better and can get through this difficult time,” she shares. At the same time, she can’t help but feel sad about the suffering she sees. Ricky feels anticipation about the upcoming auction. “I’m really looking forward to seeing who the winners of all the amazing prizes will be, as well as knowing that the money raised throughout this campaign will go to furthering the ability for RCCS to help the cholei Yisroel.”
THE SURPRISE BEHIND THE PRIZE Sponsors make the auction go ‘round, and Esty works to compile
a list of prizes even before a theme for the auction is settled. If you’re envisioning her incredible team running around begging for donations, take a step back, and remember that Yidden will never fail to surprise you! Rather than running after sponsors, the sponsors run after RCCS! What magnetic pull makes these sponsors give away valuable items without earning a dime year after year? “They share aweinspiring success stories, claiming it’s in the z’chus of helping RCCS,” explains Esty. There’s nothing like a good story to illustrate a point. Mr. Steiner from Travel USA, who has sponsored auction prizes for years, shared just last week: “You gotta hear the latest! I got a call from a new customer for tickets to Israel. She said she never booked flights through an agent before, but when she saw our company in the auction book she decided to use us. As she was raving about RCCS, I did a quick calculation and realized that her purchase is covering my full sponsorship to the RCCS auction! The craziest part was that the new customer’s name was – take a deep breath – Esther Kohn!” Mr. Steiner felt it was a direct message from Above, signaling that he’s doing something right by donating year after year.
SENDING THE MESSAGE OUT Naftuli Sofer, an employee atMailway Services, is the link between the stack of auction books and the pleasure you derive as you browse through your copy. He feels enthusiastic about working with such a great organization for so many years, and about the Emotions auction in particular, which he says, “is the greatest of all the years. Seeing emojis all over town – bumper stickers, pillows, key chains, gumball machines and more – makesthe campaign super exciting!”
Working in conjunction with RCCS for years, Mr. Sofer has an inside view of how RCCS operates. “I see how much heart, endless time, devotion, and sleepless nights they give to cholei Yisroel. I am happy and blessed to have the z’chus of being part of the wonderful RCCS Family!”
STOKING THE MOMENTUM The boots on the ground, aka hostess coordinators, are busy around the clock making sure that all party-related t’s are crossed and i’s dotted. All questions or needs of hostesses in their territory are fielded through them, no matter what time it is – or how much time they have. But mention RCCS to Chayie Schlisselfeld, a busy mom and Monsey hostess coordinator, and all she claims to feel is awe. “Since I have been involved, I have only dealt with the nicest, finest people, who will do anything and everything for the cholim.” Ever modest and unassuming, she is quick to deflect credit for the massive, emotional waves in Monsey to her RCCS colleagues, who she now proudly calls close friends. She also relates enthusiasticly about the dedication of the Monsey volunteers and hostesses. “One hostess sent me such a beautiful letter after her party, thanking me for giving her the opportunity to have the z’chus to make a party. Can you imagine? This is someone who opened her home, prepared a party, worked on entertainment for her party, hosted over 50 women and then had to do all the cleanup – but she felt a sense of gratitude towards the organization for giving her the opportunity. Mi k’amcha Yisroel!”
the donations flowing in. They host beautiful parties or do outreach to spread awareness and raise funds toward patients’ insurance premiums. Fraida Schwartz, a Brooklyn RCCS hostess for years, feels gratitude. “I first found out that RCCS existed when my sister-in-law made a house party. At the same time, my friend’s 15-year-old son was diagnosed with cancer. When I saw how easy it is to make a party, I called RCCS to set a party date in his z’chus.” Several days after Fraida scheduled her party, her sister-inlaw was diagnosed with a brain tumor. She shares tumultuous memories: “Thankfully, RCCS was on my radar, and I knew to turn to them right away. They stepped right into the heartbreak and were my sister-in-law’s angels.” Since then, Fraida has been hosting parties every year. Three years later, Fraida herself was diagnosed with cancer and immediately turned to RCCS. “I thought I knew what RCCS does. But then I went through cancer, and realized I hadn’t understood it all. Now, when I make a party, it’s a totally different feeling, knowing how much RCCS helps others.” Mrs. Miriam Lapides, a renowned and beloved mechaneches, has been helping hostesses by giving inspirational speeches at parties, speaking from an eternally grateful perspective. Two years after she began speaking, she was diagnosed with cancer. Thanks to Hashem and his shluchim at RCCS, she is now healthy. The mere mention of RCCS evokes feelings of security for Mrs. Lapides. In her own word, “RCCS is the epitome of what Klal Yisroel is all about – helping a fellow Jew going through a crisis.

For Yael Mermelstein, popular Hamodia and Binah columnist and author of many books, the plight of cancer patients evokes helplessness. “I feel helpless against a devastating disease that affects so many people, and helpless in terms of what I might be able to do to help them.” The upcoming auction makes her feel relief. “When I hear about an organization that aims to alleviate the suffering of people and families going through a cancer diagnosis… it makes me feel better that at least those who are going through this journey have support along the way.” Etka Gitel Schwartz, beloved Binah writer and author of several books, feels honored to share her thoughts about the upcoming auction, partly because of the accident she and her husband went through right after they got married. “Some of the most awful memories I have of that time – right up there with tumbling down a ravine and nearly dying, or watching my husband being wheeled off to surgery without knowing if he would be paralyzed – are the weeks and months afterward of drowning in the paperwork and red tape minutiae, and sometimes downright lies, of insurance. It was vile. It was beyond overwhelming, especially while trying to recover. And that was just for one hospital stay! “When I try to imagine what it must be like for someone who requires months of expensive care and drugs… I can’t. I just can’t. I get goosebumps all over and sick to the
stomach. RCCS is not only enabling the ill to access life-saving treatment, they are preserving families’ sanity. I don’t think that will ever stop bringing tears to my eyes.” All the hype about the upcoming auction makes Etka Gittel feel resignation. “I don’t win auctions. Ever. Well, I did win once. But it doesn’t count because the prize was withdrawn, because the auction company went out of business.” So did she toss the auction book into the trash the minute it crossed her threshold? Turns out, she still has some faith. Not in prizes, but in z’chusim. “Hey, I win by just entering the auction and having the inexpressible privilege of supporting the sick in both the most immediate and lasting way possible. A z’chus in this world and the next? I’d call that hitting the jackpot after all.”
YOUR ROLE IN IT ALL It takes a village to raise a child – and it takes a world to raise an auction from its infancy in the planning stages to the grand finale of the auction night. While the incredible people mentioned above are the visible orchestrators, ultimately, all of Klal Yisroel stands behind the success of the campaign and the unbelievable help it engenders for cholei Yisroel year after year. It’s time to secure your serving of exhilaration on this inspiring ride! The new Face-off campaign gives women an unprecedented opportunity to leave a powerful mark on the outcome of the auction. Buy tickets to the auction 877-332-2808 or www.RCCSauction. org, and join the thousands waiting with bated breath to see who the winners will be. Who knows? Public Safety Campaign Highlights State’s Move Over Law (Governor Cuomo’s Office) A CAMPAIGN LAUNCHED BY THE office of Governor Andrew Cuomo is reminding motorists that the state’s recently expanded Move Over law requires motorists to slow down and move to the left when they see law enforcement, emergency and construction vehicles stopped on the roadway. The state law, first established in 2011, was designed to protect members of law enforcement and emergency services personnel. Since that time, the law has been expanded to include any vehicle with flashing blue,
green, red, white or amber lights, as well as garbage and recycling trucks. In a statement released to the media, Governor Cuomo noted the importance of extra vigilance for those who keep our roadways safe. “Every precaution must be taken to reduce the danger inherent in these hazardous jobs and avoid preventable tragedies,” said Governor Cuomo, vowing zero tolerance for those who fail to abide by the law. A 51-year-old tow truck operator and a 58-year-old Thruway worker
both lost their lives in October while doing their jobs on the New York State Thruway. “The crews working on the Thruway shoulder that you pass going 65 miles per hour are mothers and fathers, sons and daughters, and husbands and wives who want to go home to their loved ones at the end of the day,” said Bill Finch, acting executive director at the New York State Thruway Authority. “Let them do their job. Slow down and move over if it’s safe for you to do so.”
Possible Contamination Prompts Major Chumus Recall (FDA.gov) WESTCHESTER BASED SABRA Foods has issued a massive voluntary recall on almost its entire line of chumus products because of possible listeria contamination. According to the Food and Drug Administration, problems were detected with chumus manufactured before November 8th at samples tested at Sabra’s manufacturing facilities, but not in any of Sabra’s packaged
products. While listeria can cause minor issues for those in good health, it can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, the elderly and those in frail health. Among the chumus flavors affected by the recall are Classic, Garlic, Jalapeno, Olive, Pine Nut, Red Pepper, Basil-Pesto, Tuscan Herb Garden, Bold and Spicy, Spicy Chili, Rose-
mary/Sea Salt, Garlic Herb, Honey Mustard, Salt and Pepper, Taco and Pepper Chili. Sabra advises anyone with affected products bearing a “Best Buy” dates through January 23rd to discard the chumus. A full list of affected products and reimbursement information is available by contacting Sabra Foods at 866-265-6761 or online at www.sabrahummusecall.com.
Who Bought Winning Lotto Ticket, Worth Millions, at Local Drug Store? (The Journal News) IT HAS BEEN MORE THAN THREE weeks since the owner of Drug Mart of Tallman learned that a ticket purchased at his store was the sole winner of a $15.8 million prize, but the identity of the new millionaire is still unknown. Ira Glotzer, owner of Drug Mart in the Airmont Shopping Plaza, celebrated his store’s 50th anniversary
66 / THE MONSEY VIEW / November 30, 2016 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484
this past summer. Glotzer said that he hopes the winning numbers, 5 11 -15 -23 - 36 -42, belong to someone who lives nearby. “Most of the people who buy tickets are repeat customers, so we’d very happy if it was a regular customer who bought it,” said Glotzer. The prize is the largest ever won by a Drug Mart customer.
The winning numbers were drawn randomly by the lottery’s computer system and were announced on November 5th by the New York State lottery. The holder of the multi-million dollar ticket has one year from the date of the drawing to claim their prize which can be paid either in one lump sum or in 26 annual payouts.

CHAPTER 17
Sun on
Stone Recap: Malka’la makes appointments with wealthy benefactors and finds herself being led by a potential baal tzedakah into a dark basement. SHE COULD HARDLY MOVE ON her unsteady feet. She leaned into the wall behind her, turned to look at his weathered face. “I can’t do it.” He brushed past her and took the stairs himself, flicking the light switch on the wall. When he did, the room was suddenly bathed with light. In the brilliance, she saw tables with machinery that looked like the large pumps that brought up water from the cisterns in the yard where she grew up. There were also curved factory sewing machines and studding machines. “This is my factory,” he said. He chuckled. “One of them.” She looked around. The scent of leather, bobbins of thread, metal rings, scraps swept together into neat bins — she was fascinated. It reminded her of the sewing store she had, only that had been much humbler. Here was a room bigger than the wedding hall in which she wed, full of supplies and surprises. “Here, every morning and afternoon, not now, of course, is where 57 women come to work. Every single day.” He looked around, clasped his liver-spotted hands behind him in
70 / THE MONSEY VIEW / November 30, 2016 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484
obvious pride. He started listing his accounts. “Every woman produces an average of three pocketbooks per hour, she gets paid $8 for her hour, which is very nice. She leaves with a few hundred dollars a week. And I sell these for about $50 apiece. They retail higher, of course. And there you have it; we all profit.” He walked through the room, leaving his fingerprints on a piece of patent leather, fingering a thick brocade. He nodded his head to the next doorway. Malka’la was still nailed
of his house. An orange bulb hung over a wooden desk, behind which stood a metal chair. The walls were full of samples, highfalutin bags with fancy designs and studs and color and the smallest of stones. It was such a study of contrasts. His starkness, his fancy bags. He sat down in the metal chair and looked at her. “So all of these women are working for their money. I am working for my money. And I have it; I am, baruch Hashem, blessed. Now tell me why I would part with my money,
If she was appealing to his generous and courageous side, she had to come enrobed in her own motherly and fierce spirit. to the wall, too weak to stand and walk. “The office,” he said. She stayed, staring into the room, at the colors, absorbed in the scents, far off into space. “You came for business, didn’t you?” he asked, nodding in the direction of the office, a small, gloomy space behind all the machines. the money I and 57 hardworking women labored for, and give it to you. We both want it, and right now it’s with me. Tell me why I should give it to you.” There were a hundred answers running through her head. So don’t give me. Give me because you are making money off hardworking people’s backs. I don’t have a reason. Have rachmanus. Because you are a baal tzedakah. Because I have six little children

to feed. Because I am all alone. Because it’s a mitzvah. Do it for the hungry little children waiting for me at home. The words of Yom Kippur came to mind for the second time that day: I am not worthy. I am low, dirt of the earth. I come before you like a vessel filled with shame. Do it for Your Name. do it for Your sake, for You. I have no deeds, do with me tzedakah and chessed and help me. She said nothing. Instead, she just burst into tears. He said nothing. Behind her palms, which she stuffed into her eyes to dam the tears that sprang out in unbidden torrents, she could see the hopelessness of feeding her family on one tiny salary, the one she eked out in her mother’s store. She could see the fatigue of caring for little ones and trying to survive. She could see her foolish, ridiculous decision to come to the other end of the world and courageously appeal to the mercy of strangers. She could see how, slowly, Gella’s kindness and complete lack of understanding was wearing her down until she had nearly forgotten her own voice. And now, her terror, crawling into the dark basement of a perfect stranger, and acting on choices that she didn’t have.
people would understand and be moved to help. But she had found out in trying, that words were poor representatives of the actual experience, and she could never make anyone understand what it was like to live her life, every single day. Her sorrow moved up from her entire being to her throat, and it heaved now with heavy hiccups. She tried to take a steadying breath. “I’m sorry. I don’t know what to say.” She began crying again, and he was still silent, that older man, sitting in his metal chair, the fancy bags before him forming a suit of armor, a castle, a moat he was now extending a bridge over — but she didn’t know how to cross. “I don’t know what to say. But I’ll say this. I’m an almanah with six yesomim. But I would never, ever subject myself to the humiliation of asking you for your money, if it wasn’t so hard to go without it.”
“Thank you,” she told him, and heaped blessings like she never had, onto his head. Then she quickly went upstairs and out of the house, and when she was down the path she dared open the envelope. Why would he part with his own money? What did he owe her? Nothing. Before she had come to America, she somehow fantasized that people had so much, enough that they wanted to give. But it is not human nature to want to part with one’s own, as much as one has. It is not human nature to appreciate when one has more than enough, forever creating more expectation, and thus more lack. Giving comes from faith. She had thought that if she only explained the situation she had found herself in, in those dark months since Nachman was taken from her, that

She would never hope that he would be moved to give, based on her tears. Firstly because it worked only on rare occasions, a woman’s tears — more often than not driving a man’s heart farther away — but also because if she was appealing to his generous and courageous side, she had to come enrobed in her own motherly and fierce spirit. “My children need to eat. I, too, worked for a business. We sold sewing supplies. All the women came, but it got too much for me, caring for children alone. Children need two parents. It’s the way this world was created. Anything less is un-
natural. Painfully so. “And I also had my investment. Please believe me; I’m a woman who is wise with money. I do not squander even a single prutah. I am here now, and I see a different world. People throw food away, not appreciating fully that food is what sustains us, because they have never been at the edge, where sustenance is in question. The necks they throw out. The bones they cook in the soup and they throw out.” “Oh, yes,” Mr. Boden said. “People squander food as if it was dirt.” She didn’t know she had started him on his favorite subject of all time, a subject nobody understood, and for the first time, a woman was bringing it up, of her own volition. “I don’t always have a chicken for Shabbos. But if I do, and on Pesach, when I had a few—” and she told him how she deboned the thing and cooked the bones into stock and shredded the meat and stretched it into many, many meals. “You will not squander the money I give you.” “I can assure you I won’t.” He took out a checkbook and a pen. He wrote a check, then placed it in an envelope, licked it, and sealed it. “Here. This is for you.” “Thank you,” she told him, and heaped blessings like she never had, onto his head. Then she quickly went upstairs and out of the house, and when she was down the path she dared open the envelope. Thirty-six dollars. To be continued... TWO-LAYER PEANUT CHEW I find peanut chews to be the perfect Friday night treat to munch on and with which to entertain informal company. The Swiss Roll Pan is a two-part pan, with each side being filled with another component which will form a two- or multi-layered cake, sorbet or ice cream. In this recipe, each side is filled with a different peanut chew mixture and then assembled with melted chocolate to attain this beautiful effect. I am sure I’m not the only one who is excited to find a use for this novel pan.
INGREDIENTS: Swiss Roll Pan
LIGHT LAYER 3/4 cup corn syrup 3/4 peanut butter 3/4 c sugar
DIRECTIONS: 1. In a pot on low heat, melt the first three ingredients. Alternatively, pop it into the oven (using a pan for easy cleanup), until melted. 2. Stir in the rice crispies. 3. Fill one section of the roll pan with the mixture.
4 cups rice crispies
DIRECTIONS:
DARK LAYER 3/4 cup corn syrup 3/4 peanut butter 3/4 sugar 3 oz. baking chocolate 4 cups rice crispies
1. In a pot on low heat, melt the first four ingredients. Alternatively, pop it into the oven (using a pan for easy cleanup) until melted. 2. Stir in the rice crispies. 3. Fill the second section of the roll pan with the mixture.
TO ASSEMBLE 1. Melt some chocolate (refer to instructions under “to decorate”) and spread onto exposed side of the dark layer.
2. Affix the light layer on top of the dark layer, and seal the pan tightly all around. 3. Freeze for ½ hour.
TO DECORATE 2 oz. baking chocolate Crushed Viennese crunch (you can either crush them on your own or buy it ready in the grocery)
1. Place baking chocolate into a food storage bag. 2. Make a knot on top of the bag and place it into a cup of boiling water, leaving it there until the chocolate
78 / THE MONSEY VIEW / November 30, 2016 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484
is completely melted. 3. Using a toothpick, make a hole at the bottom corner of the bag. 4. Remove the top pan, which is covering the light layer of peanut chew, and drizzle the top of the peanut chew with the chocolate. 5. Sprinkle crushed Viennese crunch in the center.

Having a legal accessory apartment on the first floor of your home brings with it a tremendous advantage: a rental income that can help defray your monthly mortgage costs, which can often be a significant part of the family budget. Best of all, the accessory apartments in both of these units have their own utility meters, which means that the rental income received by the homeowners is pure profit, making the cost of their own living space significantly more affordable.
ACCESSORY APARTMENTS
86 / THE MONSEY VIEW / November 30, 2016 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484
A Wise Investment: A Well-Thought-Out Accessory Apartment Creating a well-thought-out legal accessory apartment isn’t just a good idea; it is a wise investment in your financial future. Planning ahead and creating an attractive, well-laid-out space will yield a space that will attract tenants looking for pleasant and practical living quarters and will likely decrease your tenant turnover. The first and most important step in creating an accessory apartment is deciding just how much space you can devote to your rental unit. If you can manage to give up the whole floor you will be able to design an extremely comfortable apartment whose spacious rooms will appeal to prospective tenants and bring in a sizable monthly income. Some homeowners may want to reserve a small portion of the first floor which can be connected to the main unit upstairs through a staircase, while using the remainder of the lower level for their accessory apartment. Taking that approach will give you slightly less space for your rental apartment, but with proper planning and a lot of forethought, you can still create an attractive space that will appeal to prospective tenants. Finally, if you plan your apartment properly, you can take advantage of a third option that offers tremendous flexibility: using the entire space for an accessory apartment now, but leaving yourself an opening to take back some of the first-floor space in the future when your needs change. In the case of our two-family house, both units feature three nice-sized bedrooms, two bathrooms, a laundry room, a full sized kitchen and a dining room that can easily seat ten adults with plenty of additional space for dinner guests. Unit #1, which belongs to the Markowitzes*, devoted the entire first floor to the accessory apartment. The Markowitzes used the full space to create a beautiful five-room apartment, giving them the ability to get the maximum rent for their well-designed living space. The Sterns* in Unit #2 also decided to use the full first floor for their accessory apartment, but Mrs. Stern knew that when the family’s financial situation changed and she could afford to take a slightly lower rent, she intended to transform one room on the first floor into a study for her family’s use. Knowing in advance what her intentions were, Mrs. Stern left a staircase that would one day connect the
second floor and the accessory apartment, and when the time comes to make those changes, the Sterns will still have a very respectable and wellplanned four-room apartment to rent on their first floor. Because homeowners don’t live in their accessory apartments, it is tempting to think of the space as something of an afterthought, a part of the house that matters less than the rest of the living space. But taking that approach is a mistake. It is true that you may not be living in the accessory apartment, but you are designing a place that will eventually become someone else’s home. The more practical and attractive you make your accessory apartment, the more desirable it will be on the rental market, which means you will be able to rent it faster and, hopefully, command a higher rent. THE MARKOWITZES* — UNIT #1: Because they were able to devote the entire first floor to their accessory apartment, the Markowitzes were able to create a very comfortable living space for their tenants. They divided the apartment neatly in half, with all three bedrooms located on the same side of the living space. Because they had the extra space, the Markowitzes were able to create an expansive master bedroom suite with a full-sized walk in closet and an amply proportioned master bathroom. Having the kitchen and dining room both located on the same side of the apartment is another plus, which allows for late-night cooking marathons and lengthy Shabbos meals that don’t disturb anyone who may be sleeping. THE STERNS — UNIT #2: Reserving the option of turning one of their three bedrooms into a study in the future meant that the Sterns couldn’t use exactly the same floor plan as the Markowitzes. The Sterns focused on reserving a slightly larger amount of space for that bedroom/study, accomplishing that goal by shaving off small amounts of space from several of the other rooms. The result? A workhorse of an accessory apartment that does it all, functioning beautifully now as a five-room apartment and having the ability to work equally well down the road as a beautifully designed four-room space that will appeal to tenants, while finally giving the Sterns their long-awaited study.

CLOSED THE DOOR AND stepped into my home after a week’s vacation. I stopped. The whole world stopped with me. On the dining room table were mountains of everything, though the floor was clear. I cautiously stepped in, only to be confronted with the reality of what men call “cleanup.” Dried food crushed under my feet. Its fresh twins were swimming in pots soaking in the sink. The counters were laden with every condiment available, including closed packages of plastic plates, cups and cutlery. Every toothbrush used, towel unfolded, item opened, game played, arts and craft created and book read was plainly visible. There went my post-vacation nap. A mental calculation notified me of quickly approaching deadlines and the futility of bringing Shabbos in this short time span. The nearest book beckoned more invitingly than anything else, and I sat down heavily with it. Then the telephone rang. “Welcome back,” Goldie’s sing-song voice came through the line, “I am itching to come over to…” I did not let her finish. “Goldie,” I ventured, “I am inviting myself and family for Shabbos.” She laughed, “Your house is that bad?” “Worse.” “Okay,” she said, “we are starting with the Shabbos table.” “You are coming over?” “I am with you on the phone.” Under Goldie’s strict guidance, I categorized all items by room and tossed them into bags mentally labeled “Sunday.” The dining room table shone through. A quick throw of the tablecloth and the clanking of the Shabbos leichter pulled Goldie’s brakes. “Stop,” she said. My protests fell on deaf ears. “You will nominate a lucky child to set the table; your family needs food.” I walked towards the kitchen, zombielike. “First I need to wash all my pots,” I half whispered. “Only two,” she admonished. I protested again. “The rest you can wash while the food simmers.” The water gushed and pots clanged while Goldie’s mixer whirled up a chocolate cake I secretly hoped was for me. I peeled vegetables over the garbage can,
92 / THE MONSEY VIEW
filled pots with water using a pitcher and checked cholent beans over the mess, because Goldie prohibited counter or sink cleanup. I followed her every whim like a loyal maid. I baked the fish in a disposable pan, placed eggs and meat directly into the cholent and added cake to my grocery list (so much for my dream of Goldie’s fresh chocolate cake). When I finished, Goldie gave me permission to clear the counters, but not wash them, because “the children will enjoy doing it.” She let me wash the pots and pans, but not wipe them, because “they can air dry.” She let me sweep the floor, but not wash it, because “it’s time to prepare lunch.” This time I protested. “Well-fed mommies, tatties and children are calmer, more helpful and less cranky,” Goldie said. I prepared lunch and put down the telephone. THE LITTLE ONES CAME HOME FROM playgroup and cheder and unloaded their arts and crafts on the dining room table. Then they unloaded their emotions about Mommy’s absence on me. I reloaded them with hugs and affection, a cheese sandwich and my homecoming gifts. Time, too, kept unloading. I rushed the little ones through bath time as I greeted the older ones coming through the door. We ate lunch then designed an “Operation Shabbos Cleanup” chart as per Goldie’s instruction. Everyone had to choose, one “set up,” two “wash ups,” three items for “pickup and delivery” and two “self grooming” things to do. I gave examples of each. On the bottom, I wrote, “Cooperation equals a choice of the following privileges.” I thought I had covered every child’s job and reward preference. I was wrong. My all-time dawdler went from lunch to out of the bath all “groomed” in record breaking time. She did everyone’s allotment of “pickup and deliveries” and sold her “set up” and “wash up” to six-yearold Nachman. Then she curled up with a magazine. Nachman ate his Shabbos dessert amid much praise and chest pumping on his sudden growth to Big Boy after he finished an insurmountable amount of work. Only my usually cooperative and quick-minded daughter’s jobs remained outstanding. Her bath, together with her shrugs, grew cold. My husband came in with the groceries and sat down to lunch as I sidestepped into the shower. I emerged with an open heart and found a
little time and calm for her. After telling her softly that I know something is bugging her and it will be discussed after licht bentching, I firmly offered her the choice of either taking a bath or packing away groceries. She took care of the groceries as I took care of muktzah items amid everyone’s demands, questions and complaints. I combed hair, cut nails and curled peyos, wished Bubby a “gut Shabbos” on the telephone, finished unpacking the groceries, and convinced my daughter to take a bath. I closed doors to still messy rooms, ignored patches of missed floor stains and clutter as I sidestepped into my bedroom with a yogurt
and a fruit. Oh, and Goldie ended up sending that fresh chocolate cake, which my children devoured and crumbled over the kitchen table and floor. Finally, it was time. All my kinderlach, with either radiant or sour faces, stood around as I covered my eyes. I thanked Hashem for giving me the strength to let things go, and for helping rush Shabbos in with a calm, slow and constantly refueling glow. Then I wearily plopped down on the couch for a connectiontalk with my daughter, marveling how, with short-cuts and let-gos, I had remained calm and collected. Mostly.
Practical Advice for Quick Cleanups Wash laundry needed for Shabbos only
Once the Shabbos table is set, you will feel more ready for Shabbos
Cook before cleaning
Bake fish in a disposable pan; place eggs in cholent and use other short-cuts
Take time to eat and feed your spouse and children
Give your children and spouse attention while you work together to foster a sense of harmony
Do muktzah cleaning and pack-away before non-muktzah work
Anything not finished can be hidden to be put away properly after Shabbos
Decide what children can help with
Use a Shabbos cleanup chart, reward system and job choices
Cut non-priorities; Shabbos can come without freshly baked cake, but not without cholent
Resist the temptation to tackle unnecessary things
Talking on the phone is a distracter; only use the phone if relevant for Shabbos prep
Working at a slow and steady pace will help you make the Shabbos deadline with more calm than if you rush through your work

The Regal Shabbos Table
O
NE OF THE special ways in which we honor Shabbos is with the appearance and decor of the table upon which the seudos are served. All emotional and spiritual experiences in this world require a physical framework, and the Shabbos table itself, upon which the Shabbos meals, the zemiros and the divrei Torah are conducted is that medium in connecting us with the heiligkeit of the day. There is no more telling lesson that can be taught to the children about the special regard we have for Shabbos than the exhibition of the care and taste involved in preparing the Shabbos table. The Tur writes that when it comes to Shabbos we are required to enjoy the finest delicacies and wine, to wear fine clothing and to spare no expense in honoring Shabbos. He quotes the Gemara that the wealthy Yidden in Baval preserved their affluence in the merit of their efforts in honoring Shabbos. As such, we present tips and techniques to make your Shabbos table worthy of the presence of the Shabbos Queen.

now she had the motivation, too. She would be ready for Shabbos by chatzos as a zechus for her children’s shidduchim. She plunged into this project with total commitment, never missing one week. For a year, she didn’t share this with anyone, other than her family and rav. Azriela watched her house transform. Friday was a calm day after a week filled with preparation for Shabbos, and Azriela could finally greet Shabbos without feeling wiped out. How does she do it? “It’s making Shabbos a priority,” Azriela says. Azriela keeps Shabbos in mind all week, preparing something for Shabbos every day. Shopping is finished by Wednesday, so there’s no wending overflowing carriages in a crowded supermarket FOR AZRIELA JAFFE, THIS HAS been her family’s reality for the past nine years. Shabbos is anticipated the whole week, but by Thursday night it is already welcomed. Azriela has made it her priority to have Shabbos completely ready by chatzos each week, and she’s been witness to blessed changes in her life. A little more than nine years ago, Azriela would save most of her Shabbos preparation for Thursday night and Friday. Friday saw a rush of frantic activity until Shabbos came to “save the day.” Reality hit hard when Azriela’s daughter complained that she hated Friday. Then she happened to read a story in the Yated Ne’eman by Mal-
Azriela replaced the “Oy vay, Shabbos is coming!” with “Oh, great, Shabbos is almost here!” ky Feig about a couple whose child was healed thanks to the Chofetz Chaim’s advice to bring in Shabbos early. The cogs began to turn in her brain. At the time there was constant talk about the shidduch crisis, and although her daughters and son were just in their early teens, Azriela was already concerned. Being baalei teshuvah didn’t add bonus points for their chance in this crisis. Azriela already knew what she wanted to change in her life, and
What’s her advice for being ready for Shabbos by chatzos? “It’s not about moving everything from Friday afternoon to Friday morning,” Azriela says. “It’s about organizing for Shabbos the whole week.” 104 / THE MONSEY VIEW / November 30, 2016 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484
Thursday night. Friday is a time to finish up and get ready for the Shabbos Queen. Azriela replaced the “Oy vay, Shabbos is coming!” with “Oh, great, Shabbos is almost here!” Her former deadline has turned into a lifeline in her busy week. Baruch Hashem, Azriela saw special siyata d’Shmaya with her children’s shidduchim. The motivation turned into sweet rewards that encouraged her further. In these nine years, Azriela hasn’t missed one chatzos. No excuse is ever good enough to make her lose out on her calm Erev Shabbos. Azriela wrote about the impact this had on her life in a magazine article, and since then she’s been approached by readers for advice on making it to the deadline — or lifeline. Her personal undertaking has morphed into an international
inspiration, and more and more women were moved to change their Erev Shabbos experience, too. What’s her advice for being ready for Shabbos by chatzos? “It’s not about moving everything from Friday afternoon to Friday morning,” Azriela says. “It’s about organizing for Shabbos the whole week.” That does sound familiar from the story we all grew up on, of how Shammai bought the choicest food for Shabbos every day. In her family, preparing for Shabbos all week has become part of routine, and when her children see her cooking during the week they ask her if it’s for Shabbos. “Don’t just push Shabbos to the end of the week.” That’s a line I’d like to remember. The blessing and serenity of Shabbos can spill over to the whole week. If making it to the chatzos deadline is too great a leap, Azriela suggests starting with something. Just setting the table on Thursday night can make a difference. It’s the commitment that counts. Motivation is also an important factor. Azriela wisely advises making the commitment as a zechus for someone else, and then you can be sure you’ll take it seriously. Getting ready for Shabbos by chatzos is for everyone, no matter the age or affiliation. “It’s never too late to start!” Azriela says. She’s seen women in their sixties and seventies who have made this change in their lives. Women who’ve been making Shabbos all their lives, and whose mothers and grandmothers have done the same, approach Azriela, a baalas teshuvah, for her help. And she knows she’s doing something right when they tell her it changed their lives.
Tips to Get You Ahead of the Clock Overwhelmed by the thought of being ready by chatzos? Try taking baby steps. Aim for a few hours, or even a few minutes earlier every week.
Incorporate Shabbos food into your Thursday supper menu.
Structure your week to include a bit of Shabbos prep every day, rather than doing everything in a last-minute rush. Organize the errands that end up piling up at the end of the week to be done throughout the week. Examples: dry cleaning on Sunday, ironing on Tuesday, grocery shopping done by Wednesday, whereas food prep might need to be done closer to the end of the week.
Tone it down. Until you get into the swing of things, go ahead and make simple recipes and perhaps less dishes than you usually do.
Set the table Thursday night. There’s nothing like a set table Friday morning to put you in the chatzos mood!
If you are the type that likes Friday-fresh food, do all of the food prep on Thursday night and the actual cooking on Friday. Beans can be checked and placed in the pot, meats can be marinated or spiced and placed in the pans etc.
On short Fridays, bathe the kids first thing in the morning. For some reason, it just makes the day go smoother. Now when the nights are early, nails can be trimmed on Thursday before bedtime.
On longer Fridays, taking the kids out in the afternoon leaves the house cleaner and the atmosphere calmer.

Sometimes it takes a lifetime to make an impact on a person. Other times, a lifetime of impact is made in a day. Many times that day is Shabbos.
“FOR A LOT OF THE PEOPLE we meet, it’s the first time they are experiencing Shabbos,” Mrs. Royde tells me, her voice coming through the wire with an electricity of its own. “And you can never know the impact you’ll have on a person. Just recently we had a man who met our group two years ago contact us and ask us to kasher his kitchen.” For eight years now this group, so aptly dubbed The Traveling Chassidim, have been found popping up all over the world to share the beauty of Shabbos with Yidden far and wide. With their distinctive clothing and Yiddishinflected English, The Traveling Chassidim create a memorable atmosphere wherever they go. And they really go. “England. Vancouver. Texas. Denver. Florida. Minneapolis. Chattanooga. Atlanta… Everywhere.” Mrs. Berger, a veteran member of the group lists but a fraction of the places they’ve been.

“Anywhere they invite us, we go. Most places we travel to every year, and we create a relationship with the community. Each of us always comes home with at least one or two people that we will connect with on a certain level throughout the year — some through Erev Shabbos phone calls or learning or just a random ‘hello’ every now and again.” It’s little wonder that people from other communities are thrilled to stay in touch with members of the group; after all, Shabbos with the chassidim is a truly special experience. From the spirited davening to the heartfelt zemiros and leibedige dancing, Shabbos is felt as a living fire, an entity that enters participants and ignites their souls. “The culmination is the havdalah concert, complete with guitar and keyboard.” Mrs. Berger says. “We say Gut fun Avraham and close the lights. We speak about how Shabbos brings us all togeth-
er, mentioning the two lights we tzind at the beginning of Shabbos, and the entwined candle that we use at the end. It’s a message of unity, of Bein Yisroel l’amim — never between one ‘type’ of Jew and another.” The impression The Traveling Chassidim makes on others is lasting, and many keep tabs on where the group is headed each week, with people who’ve experienced one Shabbos oftentimes traveling many miles to join in another celebration with these special families. “Do your kids go on the Shabbatons as well?” I ask Mesdames Royde and Berger. Emphatically, both answer in the affirmative. “We, as families, are The Traveling Chassidim; the husbands, wives, and kids.” Berger says, “We had someone a couple weeks ago who went with nine kids, and sometimes even married couples go along to be with their parents. A big part of it is the family aspect

Let's dive a little deeper into this melatonin-gut relationship. Because the pineal gland gets most of the credit for melatonin production, many people are unaware that cells in the GI tract produce large quantities of both serotonin and melatonin. Melatonin plays a major role in protecting the lining of the stomach and small intestine, and is found in very high concentrations in the large intestine and rectum, where it helps

elatonin not only improves sleep quality but may also help certain pain conditions, such as fibromyalgia, pelvic pain, irritable bowel syndrome, and even migraines. A 2014 study published in the BMC Pharmacology & Toxicology evaluating women with fibromyalgia (a chronic condition with musculoskeletal pain and fatigue) found that melatonin alone or in combination with the drug amitriptyline was superior to amitriptyline alone for relieving pain. Conventional medicine has limited treatment options available for treating irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), which affects roughly 10 to 15 percent of Americans. A 2014 review in the World Journal of Gastroenterology found that all clinical studies consistently showed melatonin, usually at a dose of 3 mg taken in the evening, improved abdominal pain in people with IBS.

and the children. Kids don’t have stereotypes.” Mrs. Royde chuckles, sharing with me a story: “I had a two-year-old who was very friendly; scarily so. She would go to anybody! One Shabbos, though, that trait worked well for us. A couple came in the door, and the local rabbi told us that we had three minutes to convince them to stay, or they’d be out the door. The wife was heavily reform, and had come ‘kicking and screaming,’and only as a favor to her husband who’d been learning with the rabbi. “My husband whispered to my daughter to go give the women a hug, and she did! In fact, she sat on her lap and cuddled with her for the next three hours! This daughter and the woman are now very close and speak on the phone often, and the woman and her husband are now 99% frum and will be remarried k’das Moshe v’Yisroel in the very near future.”

regulate gut motility and reduce abdominal cramping. This helps explain, in part, why it can be beneficial for IBS. It has been reported that low levels of melatonin may also increase the risk for type 2 diabetes. Recently, scientists have found that cells in the pancreas make melatonin. The pancreas is responsible for secreting the hormones insulin and glucagon, which regulate blood sugar levels. Another important area of research is the use of melatonin for the prevention and treatment of gastroesophageal reflux (GERD). As melatonin levels rise, two things happen: The production of stomach acid is dialed back and the sphincter between the stomach and esophagus is tightened, preventing any upward flow of stomach acid. A very well done study published in 2010 in BMC Gastroenterology showed that in just four weeks, patients with GERD who took 3 mg of melatonin before bedtime got very significant relief, and at the eight-week mark, there was no difference between the effectiveness of melatonin and Prilosec: All participants had complete relief of their symptoms. In these studies, melatonin Melatonin enhances tightened the esophageal dreaming. The Roydes have many stories to share. There are tales of the young people who have gone on to learn in Eretz Yisroel after being inspired by the group, and of others that have stayed on home soil but have adopted authentic Jewish practice into their lives. “We make bar mitzvah parties for people who haven’t had one,” Mrs. Royde says, specifically mentioning the 75-year-old man who laid tefillin for the first time with her husband. “He was so emotional; he just cried bitterly over the fact that he hadn’t had done it until that point. He spoke in Yiddish, remembering his grandparents who’d left Russia as Orthodox Jews, together with his mother, but by the time he’d come out from behind the Iron Curtain, his mother was no longer religious.” Though feeling for others is an essential aspect of being part of this unique group, it’s not just hearts bursting with care for their fellow Jews that members have; it’s training as well. Each of the 35 participating families undergo kiruv training to know how to respond to situations that may arise. “It’s not for everyone,” Mrs. Berger says, “You have to be very firm in your Yiddishkeit before you can go out and help others with theirs.” Not only on an individual level, but on an organizational one as well, various shailos can occur, necessitating strong Rabbinical guidance. Under the flagship of Belz International, The Traveling Chassidim is always under the watchful eye of the tzadik. Deeply active in other kiruv projects as well, the Belzer Rebbe is known for his powerful love of all Yidden, no matter how far from Yiddishkeit they are. That intense ahavas Yisroel is trademark of the Belzer chasidus, and is similarly the strand that unites each member of The Traveling Chassidim. That love of both Yidden and Yiddishkeit originally led Rabbi Royde to attended an Aish HaTorah Discovery Seminar, where a Pennsylvanian rabbi invited him to come for a Shabbos with a group of friends, to give his community a heady taste of a chasidishe Shabbos. “I’m putting you into my phone as The Traveling Chassidim, so I won’t forget your name,” the rabbi said, and the rest is history. The name stuck, and so did the desire to infuse Jewish lives with the taste of Shabbos.

“The first year we visited two communities, the second year five. This year we’ve been to 28! And we always go back to the communities we’ve visited, at least once a year,” Mrs. Royde says, flipping through a booklet detailing the growth and mission of The Traveling Chassidim. “And we also host what we call ‘Shabbos in the shtetl,’ where we invite members of the various communities out to Monsey and Boro Park. They stay with local heimishe families, and get a taste of what our life is like.” Hosting is perhaps easier than being hosted. “Contrary to popular belief,” Mrs. Berger tells me, “we don’t get paid for what we do. Everything is voluntary. The only thing we ask is that the host community covers our travel expenses and food. As for lodgings, they’re not five star. We stay with the community members.” On the topic of housing, Mrs. Royde shares another story: “Three years ago, my husband made contact with a man on Staten Island, and they decided to learn together, but it never worked out, until we went back to that community the following year. Then the man asked my husband to teach him hilchos Shabbos,” Mrs. Royde says, her smile coming through in every word. “He started with the very basics, like putting on a white tablecloth and having the family bathe before lighting. By now he’s shomer Shabbos and keeps kashrus, and last time we returned to the community, we had wanted to find accommodations close to the shul, because we had small children, but this man would have none of it. “‘Rabbi Royde, because of you I walk a half hour to shul every single week instead of driving. And now you want to tell me that you won’t walk a half hour for me?’ he asked. Of course, with such a valid argument, we gladly accepted his accommodations!” It’s that attitude that makes The Traveling Chassidim stand out in my mind; the can-do, will-do and want-todo attitude wherever another Jew is concerned. For each member of this charismatic group, no destination is too distant and no soul too far gone. All it takes is a few good zemiros, a whole lot of heart, a taste of Shabbos… and perhaps a plane or two.

Last Year’s Shabbos Project brought together Yidden from all walks of life and was observed in 918 CITIES in 84 countries. Over 400 AMERICAN CITIES participated. MILLIONS OF JEWISH PEOPLE observed Shabbos together, many of them for the first time. Shabbos: Right on Time Yom shekulo Shabbos? In the Arctic circle, the sun can stay above the horizon for 24 HOURS A DAY during the summer months. The halachos of when Shabbos begins and ends are complicated. If traveling to locations where there are extended periods of light or dark, be sure to consult your rabbi!
Palm Springs, California has special halachos in regards to lighting Shabbos candles, because the VISUAL SUNSET and ACTUAL SUNSET occur at different times. Some poskim require the bracha to be made long after the candles are lit!
Erev Shabbos Chanukah, Rabbi Butman of Chabad lights a gigantic menorah in Manhattan and then TAKES A HELICOPTER back to his neighborhood to make it in time for Shabbos.
The INTERNATIONAL DATE LINE makes traveling close to Shabbos complicated. For instance, there is a flight that leaves Los Angeles, CA at 1:55 on Erev Shabbos, travels westward and crosses the dateline, landing at 8:35 p.m. on what would be the Chinese Motzei Shabbos, though the traveler is only airborne for several hours. Poskim advise against taking this flight.
The island of Samoa is one of the hardest places in the world to correctly keep Shabbos, as the International Date Line runs straight through it. Every week is a safek, and at least once, it was paskened that Shabbos must be observed for AT LEAST 49 HOURS.

Real Estate The Shabbos Factor WHEN PURCHASING A HOME, FIRST THERE IS THE negotiating the price of the home and the details of the transaction such as: When will the closing be? What will the down payment amount to? How large of a mortgage will be applied? What repairs are needed based on the results of a home inspection? Then there are requirements in the choosing of a home unique to frum families that others may not have. For some people these are deal breakers and for others these are areas to compromise. Let us discuss one major aspect of Jewish life that impacts greatly on the choice of the home that a family will buy. Shabbos. Shabbos necessitates a close proximity to a shul. Shabbos can be enhanced if there is an eruv. Shabbos means crock pots, hot plates, timers and time clocks. Shabbos brings up concerns like electric ovens and stoves, lights on in the refrigerator and lights that are triggered by motion sensors. What about well water that requires an electric pump? And Shabbos locks? Shabbos is the main reason why in frum areas, defying local and national trends, the prices of homes appreciate or depreciate. It is also the reason why denser housing can be more desirable than less dense housing to some, hence a thriving and accelerating housing market. When beginning the home search, after being prequalified for a mortgage loan, a family has to determine an area that they may want to live in. House aesthetics and even price can be secondary to location. How close to the nearest shul? Are there children in the area and what schools do they go to? Whom will my children be playing with on Shabbos, when children stay at home or play with neighbors in walking distance? Am I willing to be one of the first in a “new” area where there is no “established” frum neighborhood yet? Am I able to walk to a shul? Who will be my neighbors? These are questions that families ask of themselves, discuss with family and friends, their Rabbonim and mentors and discuss at length with their realtors.

As house prices escalated and younger families couldn’t afford the older, more established neighborhoods, new communities sprung up all over Rockland.
In the past years, families didn’t compromise on location as much as today, but as house prices escalated and younger families couldn’t afford the older, more established neighborhoods, new communities sprung up all over Rockland. These areas are working on eruvs, establishing shuls and many areas where just five and six years ago a frum family would never have lived, are now vibrant communities with lots of young families and choices of shuls. This trend of “pioneering” has proven successful in Lakewood, NJ and now in Rockland. Another additional expense that a family will normally undertake when purchasing a new house is making sure that the electricity in the

home is convenient for Shabbos observance. An electrician is needed to install Shabbos clocks and to make sure that there is enough electricity in the kitchen so that urns, crock pots, second dishwashers, stoves, ovens, microwaves, etc. will not trip the breakers and blow the fuses, causing a great inconvenience, especially on Shabbos! So when purchasing a home, it’s not only about the color of the siding and whether the driveway has a steep incline, but also the other unspoken but necessary conveniences that enhance our quality of life. ZÜSMAN is a uniquely professional production that will delight the entire audience. Besides crafting a dramatic and fascinating story, ZÜSMAN also presents an inspiring
TALE OF TRUE HASHGACHA PRATIS
and characters that remain steadfast in their emunah and bitachon in the face of great challenges and lifeand-death decisions. How fitting that our story takes place during Chanukah, a time when we can truly appreciate that “Yeshuas Hashem k’heref ayin.”
