I am writing this in response to last week’s letter regarding store owners’ same-day return policies. From what I understood, the writer was frustrated with same-day-only returns on purchases done with credit cards. I would like to explain it from the perspective of a shop owner, and perhaps help you in the future. Each year, shop owners pay thousands of dollars in credit card fees. Each time a card is swiped, a percentage of the money goes to credit card companies. Some cards cost more than others. If the credit card is keyed in, it is an even bigger expense. Same-day returns on a credit card allow the owner to void the transaction before the day’s sales batch, thereby avoiding the fees. When you return the next day, not only will the owner have to pay the fees, but new fees for swiping the card again will also be incurred. If you are not sure of your purchase and may need to do a return, kindly ask the saleslady what other payment options you have. If you pay with cash, you may be allowed more time for a return. In our store, we will hold a customer’s check if we know that there may be a need for a return. To summarize, I can relate to your frustration, yet I would also like for you, the customer, to understand the shop owner’s point of view. A Monsey Store Owner

You are absolutely correct in your frustration. Store policies should be explicitly stated on the receipt so that the customer can be clear about the return/exchange policy. I, however, have two credit receipts lingering in my pocketbook which are sure to be mistakenly trashed one day. I received a lovely expensive gift and was told that if it was not to my liking, the store would exchange it within a certain period of time. Not wanting to hold onto something I had no need for, I returned it to the store and searched for something more suitable to my taste. But… the item I chose cost a total of $5.95 less than the original price. Trust me, the original price was way more than that and I would have thought the store would simply hand me the $5.95. Instead, they handed me a credit receipt to be used within the year. I honestly do not think there is a single item in that store that costs $5.95, so why do they need my

few dollars’ credit in their system? And is that paltry amount so important to their business that if I lose my by-now-faded receipt, they stand to gain that amount after a year? The other credit receipt is for $5.00. An establishment, which offers a certain type of repair, will only accept the item with an additional $5.00 purchase. Nowhere is this policy stated. I had no need for any additional item and simply couldn’t understand why, if they charge for the repair, I had to shell out more money for an unneeded buy, but I did it in order to expedite the repair. Interestingly, I have already shopped at that store, and totally forgot about the credit receipt, in my pocketbook. It’s not up to me to advise you on how to ethically run your business, but I would suggest that if the exchange or return conforms to your policy, and there are just a few dollars separating the end of the deal and its closure, alleviate the pressure on your bookkeeping system and the customer’s purse; return the few dollars. Thank you, R.S./A Credit Receipt Collector

There is a special room in my heart for those closeknit neighborhood friends of my youth. A magical closeness awakens every time I meet an old neighbor while we cough up the fondest memories of the past. Perhaps that bonding relationship feels so tight because I developed my inner core together with them. This past Shabbos, the Lane Street family, the place where I caught countless fireflies and picked raspberries, lost a most beloved and special neighbor, Mrs. Ruth Klugman. There is too much to write about Mrs. Klugman. רות שרה בת אפרים ע”הtook along millions. Millions and millions of maasim tovim. I remember helping stuff tzedakah mailings numerous times. A number of second marriages were hosted in the Klugman gray-carpeted living room. I can still smell the nursing home atmosphere which would greet you in the hallway while both elderly grandmothers lived with them. And then there was Ulga, a lost soul, who became part of the neighborhood while she was mothered and cared for at the Klugmans. It was the happiest home and I loved hanging out there for hours. It was the best house to play hide and seek. I could hide in the fireplace or in any closet around the house. I sat and kicked my muddy shoes against freshly painted walls. The Klugmans and I baked cupcakes and brownies and refilled glass grape juice bottles with “sink cola” so there was cold water in the refrigerator. The loss of a loved one is a wakeup call. Mrs. Klugman, there is no way I can remodel my kitchen like yours. Your orange floor and twin sinks with one rotating faucet are discontinued models. But maybe, in some miniscule way, I can emulate your wisdom in making a kitchen a place where you polish neshamos
more than sinks. Perhaps I could try to put people before dishes. May you be a melitz yosher for your beloved children, all of Klal Yisroel and the Lane Street family. Mrs. Liba Friedlander
BEFORE YOU PAINT THE TOWN RED I just read your snowthemed issue of a few weeks ago. The idea to color snow is great, but please tell your readers not to use food coloring — unless the kids’ coats are ready for the garbage anyway and you are planning to repave your walkway. Food coloring stains permanently. Any kindergarten mother will tell you to test the so-called “washable” paints, too. Let our children enjoy the snow gezunterheit, without any agmas nefesh. RE: DANGER AWARENESS You published a letter entitled “Danger Awareness.” Well, the same thing happened to us too. Four years ago my three-year-old grandchild in Monsey was sucking on one of those lollipops that are round like a small ball. All of a sudden he started choking. The lollipop stick had come off. It was terrible. He couldn’t breathe. My daughter-in-law froze. She saw him in panic in front of her eyes. My son called Hatzalah. While waiting for Hatzalah, My son tried the Heimlich Maneuver and B”H the lollypop came out. It had been a nightmare. (Lack of oxygen to the brain can do damage in as little as four minutes!). My son and daughter-in-law made a small seudas hodaah afterwards. From now on they refer to such lollipops as “the choking lollipops.” Yet, believe it or not, when my daughter-in-law talked to oth-

ers about how dangerous they can be, the women looked at her like she was weird! This Shabbos, a neighbor made a small kiddush seudas hodaah for his five-year-old, who choked just this past week in cheder on the same type of lollipop. The kid banged on the table when he couldn’t breathe, to catch the Rebbe’s attention. The Rebbe ran to call Hatzalah. He didn’t know the Heimlich Maneuver but was able to pull the lollipop ball out by hand. Sometimes trying to grab a choking item only pushes it farther in, so that was a big chesed from Hashem. As I was preparing this letter, a son of mine who is a member of Hatzalah, told me that he also experienced such an incident some years ago, and since then has never allowed any round candies to be given to his children. The airway of a child is very narrow — like a drinking straw — and that’s why round candies are so dangerous. Every year over 12,000 children in America visit the emergency room for choking on hard candy, and some never leave. Please realize the importance of being careful with this. I am writing this letter to let people know that this is not just a single unique incident that happened once to one person who wrote that important letter last week. It’s a real case of potential pikuach nefesh. As told to: Basya Lev
MY HUSBAND WAS TRAVELING for business and would be away over Shabbos. It just so happened that there was a Shabbos program at a hotel that I was interested in attending during his absence. When my friend heard that I’d be going, she asked to join me. A certain yeshiva was begging her husband to spend Shabbos with them so he could speak to the bachurim, but he didn’t want to leave his wife alone for Shabbos. This was the perfect solution. We arrived the night before the program would begin and asked if we could have the same room as the one we would be given the next day, so we wouldn’t have to pack up and move before Shabbos. The woman at the front desk said she was unable to help us, as all 400 rooms were booked under one name and the program coordinators would be assigning the rooms. The next day we went to check in with the coordinators. We asked if we could keep our current room, but the person apologetically said he was unable to do that. My neighbor had brought her three-month-old baby with her and was disappointed as she didn’t want to have to pack up and move. I asked the man if he could at least give us our new room number so we could go straight to the room after packing up our things. He did, and amazingly enough, it turned out that we were assigned the exact same room that we were in!

fer from gum disease, then you must see a specialist to ensure it won’t affect your physical body. At the same time, getting regular dental check-ups and cleanings are very important too. The typical home regimen of brushing your teeth twice daily and flossing before you brush is not to be taken for granted! Natural mouthwashes that kill off bacteria, brushing your tongue and brushing your palate can all be very helpful. If you’re already doing that, then great, keep it up, but if not, it’s time to start immediately.
Becoming Weigh Smarter How much weight can you drop with each lost tooth? MAYBE A HALF AN OUNCE! If you lose a tooth, it would be nice to drop some weight with it, although it doesn’t work that way. It’s nice to lose weight and important to keep your teeth. As far as I can remember, I used to live on the dentist’s chair, mostly, for a cavity, root canal or extraction. It seemed nice to blame it on genetics (you could, in fact, be predisposed) but it didn’t help me much. I needed to figure out a different way of spending my precious time. It was truly becoming a pain in the neck (and cheek!), and who likes dental visits anyway?
Major problems: Although the teeth are in your mouth, there is a very strong connection to how it affects the physical well-being of the body. Many people are suffering from diseases which can be related to the health of their mouth. Because the mouth is one gateway to the body, the bacteria that builds up around your teeth has the potential to travel down to the lungs, causing pneumonia, heart problems or damage to any organ. Multiple studies were done on people who suffered a heart attack, and it correlated with a high rate of gum disease, which is infected gums from bacteria surrounding the teeth. People with high blood sugar issues were also found among those who were affected with gum disease. When plaque builds up along and under the gum line, infections can occur, harming the gums and the bone that holds the tooth in place. The most severe form of gum disease is called periodontal disease, which is bone deterioration leading to tooth loss. One thing is clear: The body and mouth are not separate entities. Therefore, your body can affect your oral health. Likewise, your mouth can affect your physical health.
Oral hygiene: As far as dental care is concerned, if you already suf-

Smart solutions:
The worst things you can do for your immune function is, you guessed it, pack yourself with sugar-laden foods, white flour, processed foods, don’t exercise, drink little pure water and get the least sleep you can.
Since a sound, healthy body with a strong immune system is meant to get rid of unwanted bacteria, the same rule applies here. You want to do your best to keep your body healthy, so if and when some invaders from your mouth make it to your body, they can be killed off and flushed out with other residues. The worst things you can do for your immune function is, you guessed it, pack yourself with sugar-laden foods, white flour, processed foods, don’t exercise, drink little pure water and get the least sleep you can. Melaben
• The issur of melaben is cleaning a garment or fabric on Shabbos. • The issur of melaben also applies to a garment that is perfectly clean. Therefore one may not wet any garments on Shabbos. • One is allowed to go out in the rain with a garment, even though one knows it will get wet. However, Chaza”l assured hanging up a wet garment in a place where one regularly hangs up garments to dry, because of maaris ayin. A wet garment should only be hung in a place where one does not usually dry garments, for instance, on the outside of a bedroom or bathroom door. • This halacha also applies to garments that are soaked or drenched in sweat. • One may hang up wet, nylon or synthetic garments in any place in the house, because these garments don’t absorb water, and therefore there is no issur of maaris ayin. However, if the stitches on these garments are from regular absorbent thread, one may not purposefully soak them in water, since the threads are made from absorbent material, and therefore the issur of melaben applies to them. • There is a machlokes haposkim if s’chita applies to brushes and toothbrushes. Therefore, if one uses a toothbrush on Shabbos (knowing that one’s gums won’t bleed), one should only use a dry brush. In such circumstances, one may fill one’s mouth first with water rather than wetting the brush. • One may wet a garment or fabric through use if one is not makpid on that particular garment or fabric, for example, a dish towel. However, one should not squeeze it. • If one has a stain on a garment that renders the garment unfit to be worn, one is not allowed to remove the stain under any circumstances. • If one has a stain that is not thick, one may remove the stain by rubbing it with the garment or with a dry towel as long as some of the stain remains slightly visible. If the stain is thick, and, through removing the stain, the stain becomes powdery, like mud, for example, one is over on tochen when removing the stain, and it may not be done. However, if the stain is from something that was already ground (nidchan), one may remove that stain on Shabbos. • If an entire garment became dusty on Shabbos, for example if sand or dust fell on a garment, one may not shake it off completely.

Wordust. It’s like the powder a magician throws upon the stage to create the magic. It’s like the tiny dust particles that create pearls in oysters. It is tiny words polished and arranged to create art! Art gives individuals a chance to express themselves. Some do this through singing or dancing. Others like to sew or paint. And there are those who need to express themselves more deeply, by thinking about life and human nature, by expressing their unique ideas, and by creating stories; in other words, by writing. A private writing class gives students a chance to experience writing in its purely artistic form. “I wished for creative writing classes when I was a student, and now I’m determined to create one,” says Mindy Friedman, creator of Wordust Writing Classes. Wordust tackles the difficult obstacle writers face in the publishing field. Somehow, writing in one’s own diary doesn’t make anyone feel like a writer. Girls want
54 / THE MONSEY VIEW / February 1, 2017 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484
to be published in magazines or books in order to feel really satisfied. This is challenging because publishing houses are a huge expense and magazines are not eager to accept work from new writers. Wordust is the vehicle that takes a girl from the start, a passion to write, until the final stage, publishing. Our unique publishing method enables every girl to go to print and avoids the heavy publishing costs writers face.
Meaning
SO WHAT REALLY MAKES A GOOD STORY? How do you create characters that are real and diverse and interesting to read about? How do you create conflicts that are fresh and make your characters grow? How can you write dialogue that is appealing to the reader’s eyes? How do you turn your story into a plot? Which point of view should you tell your story from? How do you create suspense that makes your reader just want to keep reading? What gives a story meaning? Join one of the Wordust groups to acquire the techniques. This season, Wordust is forming small groups of three or four each. This means that you can choose to be introduced to other girls who like you love to write, or you can gang up with your old writing friends and form your own group.

Suez Water Rates Going Up This Month (The Journal News) IN THE BAD NEWS department, your water bill is going up, starting now. In the good news department, the rate hike will be less than originally anticipated. The original rate hike proposed by Suez Water New York would have seen monthly water bills rising by $3.64 each month. Instead, Suez agreed to a modified plan presented by New York State’s Public Service Commission, which called for
a monthly increase of 51 cents for the first year, followed by monthly rate hikes of $4.80 and $4.87 over the next two years. While Suez described the new plan as being “in the best interests of its customers,” it offers customers a savings over the next three years of just $8.88 over the original plan. Suez last raised its rates in June 2015. The rate hike is intended to recoup some of the company’s losses
incurred by a failed plan to build a water desalination plant in Haverstraw. The plan also incorporates a rebate program for low-income customers, calls for stricter water conservation and eliminates the current rate structure which has consumers paying a premium for water during the summer. County Executive Ed Day has vowed to fight any rate hike related to the desalination plant.
“Can You Hear Me?” Phone Scam Targets Unsuspecting Victims (CBS News) PHONE SCAMMERS are employing a new technique to separate consumers from their hard-earned dollars: getting them to say the word “yes” in a recorded conversation and then using that approval to authorize charges on the victim’s credit card. Playing off a tag line used in Verizon ads that use the phrase “Can you hear me?” callers may introduce themselves before asking the now infamous question. That answer of “yes” is then used by scammers as proof that charges
have been authorized. Scammers may often already have your personal information including name, address, credit card numbers and more. Victims who dispute the bogus charges discover that thieves are using their recorded “yes” as proof that the charges were approved. What to do if targeted by scammers, who also use the same system to put unauthorized charges on phone and utility bills? “I know that people think it’s impolite to hang up, but it’s a good strategy,” said Susan Grant, director
of consumer protection for the Consumer Federation of America. Consumers are advised to check their credit card statements and phone and utility bills for unauthorized charges and to avoid answering “yes” to any questions from callers they do not recognize. Be aware that callers who claim to be from the IRS, Department of Motor Vehicles or the Social Security Administration are not being truthful, as government agencies will only initiate communication via mail and not by phone.

BACKSTORY
Sun on
Stone Epilogue: Joy after pain is sun after rain. The moisture and tears don’t dry up fast. They saturate. And in that newly yielding earth, decomposition happens. The sun prods newlings to struggle their tips up, out of the darkness, encourages them out in the open, invites them to bask. It is in this field that Malka’la finds herself, walking with Heshy. She has never cut through here… not since Nachman. She is aware of the fear and holds hands with faith. Heshy is not a Jerusalemite. Adjusting to the heat, convecting off the walls in the small apartment, the flint temperaments of the people around him, he often yearns for… no. He does not. He remembers how damp, lonely it was before Malka’la. How she descended onto his life. A miracle, she. A sun after a long string of winter afternoons. There’s so much to relearn. It’s as if life sprouts anew. (It does.)
SUN ON STONE: THE BACKSTORY HONEST. AUTHENTIC. PASSIONATE. Chany Rosengarten is the personality behind Jerusalem Stone; Two by Four; and Sun on Stone — the serials featured in The Monsey View. So many of you have told us how you loved the serials. You’ve told us how you waited in suspense each week, how you ran out each week to get your copy and read the next chapter. You’ve told us how much you were caught up in the lives of the characters — how you laughed with them, cried with them, celebrated

How did you think up Sun on Stone? And also… is the story true? How does writing a serial for a magazine work? You give them the storyline or they give you the storyline? We want to know! Okay, okay. Here’s how it worked. When The Monsey View invited me to write this story, they said, “We want something good and we want some-

thing true.” Out of respect to their readers, they felt that wasting people’s time with pure fiction was per-
haps… um, okay, I’m not sure exactly how they felt. But I know what they told me. They wisely chose to pursue a true story. I have this friend in Beit Shemesh. For those of you who don’t know me personally (yet), I grew up in Skver, moved to Beit Shemesh with my two babies and lived there for about four years. “Malka’la’s” sister was a neighbor in the next building. She’s very sweet, teaches Pilates and yoga to the local women and I loved schmoozing with her. She liked talking to me because I am an “Americaner.” When she invited me to see her parents’ house in Batei Rand, we took the local “kosher” bus, (i.e., not Egged), got off at the shuk, and she took me on my own, private tour. She showed me the kerosene stove in a local restaurant and then we headed to her mother’s house. That’s

when she told me about the difficulties: how poverty ripped the family apart, how her mother’s strength waned after having worked so hard. About Zelda, the upstairs neighbor. About her brother’s injury, and about her other brother defecting from family tradition. She told me then that I could write up the story, but it wasn’t the right time for the story to be told. Stories are like that. Hashem sends them down when they need to be heard. Many of my readers tell me that the message they needed was the message they found in the chapter of that week. Stories aren’t random, not even fiction stories. They are a crystallization of everything we believe. And I needed to be ready to tell the story.
Really? How do you connect with the story? Oh, my. I have to say, as much as this story is not my story at all, it is also all mine. In every story I write, I have to be living it in my brain and my heart, and from that place, I retell it. The scary thing about fiction is that it’s true — my truth. The scary thing about a true story is that it’s also fiction, having been relived in my own mind, in my own version of the truth. So this story is both “Malka’la’s”
them credit for, and their power lies in the obscurity of the message.
What are your plans going forward? To party, first of all. When the two stories — Jerusalem Stone and Sun on Stone — are published together as one book, the first thing I want to do is celebrate. Celebrate the accomplishment of completing what I set out to do. Celebrating my dear and faithful readership, all of you who made the story possible, because a story needs the teller and the listener, both. This will be a great opportunity to finally come together in celebration of that which we have created together. Finally, to celebrate and give thanks that I was the vessel through which this story, which needed to be told, came into the world. So we’ll do a book launch party, and a book signing, and I hope to see you all there. Until then (because book publishing is a lengthy process that involves way more people than you can imagine), I sit back down to write. What’s coming next? Can you tell us about the next story? About the next story: Stay tuned. I can only tell you that I’ve searched my

We have a code word for that in the writing world. We call it “Based on True Facts.” Compare it to the food industry’s “natural and artificial flavors.” Many of the messages I’ve put into my stories are important to me, personally. When I talk publicly to a group or give a class, I teach about the subjects that have wound up in my stories. They are the lessons I’ve had to learn myself. This story was the message I internalized through the retelling of Malka’la’s story. Stories are like that. They have more power than we give
62 / THE MONSEY VIEW / February 1, 2017 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484
heart for a story and meaning that is important to me, as I hope it will be to you. The only way I can hope to entertain you and bring you a story that has meaning to you is if it first has meaning to me. Sometimes, a reader quotes a sentence from my work, and I wonder: Am I the only one who experiences these thoughts, feelings, insights? It turns out that nobody quotes anything that isn’t meaningful to them, and the reason they brought it up was because my thought — and I thought I was the only one! — is so relevant to them. Because we connect to honesty,
to truth. On the other hand, I’ve had people who try to figure out who I am, from my stories. But that’s an act in futility and confusion. I am not my story. I am the writer of my story, much like a baker is not a salted Dulce de Leche pie. I will infuse my story with my influence, because I’m writing it. But then I submit the story, close my laptop, and head to the laundry room to attend to other, equally important business.
When do you come up with the story? How do you write? Writing is the boring part. It’s too bad, but it’s the fact. Novice writers often talk about the muse, when the inspiration hits them and they are called to pour forth a tremendous amount of wisdom from deep inside them. Don’t be fooled. Seasoned writers know that writing, like washing dishes, is a tedious act. But for the fun parts: First of all, this story is six years in the making, and I moved all the way to Eretz Yisrael and back to make this story happen. I remember the first week in Beit Shemesh, I saw a woman I’d known from back in New York, buying chicken in the butcher shop. She asked for ground chicken from one chicken breast. I knew she had many children, numbering in the teens. They gave her the chicken, but when they weighed it and she eyed the digits on the price side of the scale, she said it was too expensive. “Put back some.” So they put back some and weighed it again. So it went, until she left with a sliver of chicken to feed her family of more than ten mouths. A year passed, and I got to know life in Beit Shemesh: mothers who were forced to water down the milk for their children, or the baby formula for the baby. Children asking for another apple, or begging for a cucumber, and a frustrated and deprived mother saying, “But you already had one.” I used to try to compare this to the mothers in Monsey who had to force-feed their children a tzumbela of chicken on a Tuesday night. More recently, however, before I got ready to write Malka’la’s story, I

needed to know what going door-todoor collecting feels like. The only inkling I had was from when I was in sixth grade, walking around all of Skver with a raffle booklet until my toes froze. But all I remembered was how hard it was to go up the steps again and again. I needed to know the experience as a woman, and I needed to know it well. I needed compassion, and true compassion only comes from relating, from the humility of having experienced something similar myself. I knew that most Yerushalmim come back from such trips recounting the tears; grown men breaking down and crying in their lonely hachnasas orchim basements, because of the ego-breaking work that collecting is. But that wasn’t enough. I needed to experience it firsthand. So I asked a friend if she would come “schnorr” with me, door to door. She said no. I begged my editor to come with me. She said no. Everyone said no. Nobody wants to do it. Even I didn’t want to do it by myself, like Malka’la did. But then my sister humored me, brave soul that she is. I guess we are also sisters at heart, both of us curious, adventurous and brave. We chose a cause and went to Route 306, where houses are close together. It was a learning moment. People were actually quite generous, and we collected close to a hundred dollars in the forty minutes we were there. I got to feel the experience with all five senses and was able to relate it to my readers in a tangible, relatable form. I also had “Brizel” on speed dial. Mrs. Brizel was my next-door neighbor in Beit Shemesh, a lovely Yerushalmi woman with direct lineage all the way to the famed Brizel’s bakery in Geulah. To give you an idea of just how purebred she is, she had a remedy for any and all ailments that ever struck any of my kids while I was living next door. And whenever I got stuck with an image while I was writing the story, I put an asterisk into the draft, kept going until the end, and when I was finished, treated myself to a call to Mrs. Brizel. She told me what they would
serve at a Yerushalmi wedding fifty years ago, what her mother wore as a young girl, what was considered modern in those times (they were less frum back then, she claims), what a landmark building looked like from the inside — everything I needed to know. If she didn’t know, she’d call her father or mother from her cell phone while I waited, and I got the information that way. Research is the best part of writing, the most fun, the place where I find things out well enough that I can write about it accurately.
What inspires you most about writing? Writing, like music or photography or painting, is an art form. It transports and transforms. As a consumer of the written word (namely, an avid reader), I’ve been amazed at the power a book has over me, from scaring me enough to lock all the windows, to teaching me a new skill, giving hope, bringing me understanding… writing is a communication form that changes the person engaged with it. Good writing, that is. For me to have honed my skills, and become a writer able to influence my readers to great things — how can I not be amazed at the power that comes through me? And let me be clear here. Holding power — holding a drill, holding a gun, holding a talent — comes with tremendous responsibility, and ultimately the deep faith that the power is not me, but comes through me, directly from Hashem. Everything I’ve written needed to be written, needed to be read, needed to be understood in the exact way each individual reader understood it. My best writing happens when I stand aside and let the writing happen. What impact does your writing have on readers? Readers stop me in the street and thank me. I usually just respond with, “You’re welcome.” But I want to say so much more. I know my stories have brought people to cry deeply, care heroically, accept themselves more fully. So

A lot of my readers have felt validated and understood, comparing Malka’la’s situation to their own. I want to say to my readers: “You and I care deeply about this story, because we care about growing. We care about being human. We care about life, and the act of living — often joyous, just as often fraught with hardship. We share something. We share a story, which is life solidified into sentences and scenes. Thank you all for being my readers on this journey and thank you for the brief moments in which we meet, reach out to each other, and acknowledge our shared experience.” All this might be awkward to say. So I don’t. But I said it anyway.
What do you enjoy writing the most? When I have an open page in front of me, and I have the opportunity to write the truth, as I see it; that’s what I like the most. Novels, true stories, my personal experiences, an interview with someone else and writing for commercial purposes — I’ve done
layim, the distance gives me room to make the story real. My editors at The Monsey View have very high standards. We want to give readers the very best in heimish reading, while not compromising on quality in any way. And when it comes to the kashrus and finesse of a story, we won’t move an inch from the highest levels. My readers are often amazed at the level of editing, fine-tuning and sensitivity that pervades each chapter. So as a writer, it’s about finding that zone from which I can comfortably give you the truth, and nothing but the truth. Even if it means writing fiction.
What do you think can be im-
I can be more real when there’s a layer of fiction involved. them all. And I like them all, as long as I wasn’t being pretentious. When I was being real — writing what it is like for me, because that’s all I really have as a basis, my own experiences — writing becomes a joy. That’s why I like fiction. Because I can be more real when there’s a layer of fiction involved. Say I’m writing a profile of a businessman or community leader who has his image to guard; the article is guarded, less real and as a result, as soporific as a sleeping pill. But when I’m writing about Yerusha-
proved in the writing world? A lot. We are a thinking culture and a reading culture, and writing is such an influential part of our community. We’ve made a lot of strides and changes to the industry by introducing highquality kosher magazines, such as The Monsey View. I’m still amazed at the wonderful work The Monsey View has done for our local community. And yet, with changes come new challenges. How do we keep writing quality high? How do we keep good
writers motivated? What are our standards and how do we maintain them? I’m at the forefront of several big projects to bring the writing community to the next level, and I’m pretty excited about them.
Where do you see your own career in a few years from now? Sigh. I can say this much: The career goals I wanted five years ago, I pretty much achieved. I had a dream of being a writer, and then, a published writer. And then, a novelist… I was motivated; I surrendered my dreams (and my ideas of how they would come about) to Hashem and His astounding ways. And I’ve never ceased to be amazed. Sometimes I have to remind myself — remember everything you wanted back then? You have it now. It’s a good reminder because I’m always striving, and sometimes I feel like I want it all, right now. And I try to remember that it all comes, in due time. Time and prayer, those two work together as agents of magic. So… five years from now? Well, I have several books published, and I’ve changed the way books are published, so that I connect regularly with my readers in a way authors have traditionally been unable to do. There’s more, but hey, can we leave the rest for you, dear readers to find out? Chany Rosengarten authors columns and serialized novels in leading publications. The powerful Segula of initiating a “Pidyon Nefesh of the Arizal” as per the holy thoughts of the Rashash, is very wellknown, as quoted in the Siddur Nekudas Hakesef, page 550. Source: In the Sefer “Sha’ar Hakavanos” he writes as follows: “Our master Rabbeinu Chaim Vital used to have this practice every Erev Rosh Hashana and Erev Yom Kippur to do the Pidyon in this manner, and whoever does the Pidyon this way is guaranteed to live out the year.” In Sefer “Sha’arei rachamim” he writes “This Pidyon was transmitted to us by Eliyahu Hanavi”
Pidyon Rashash: The pidyon is brought down with various texts in the Avodas Hakodesh from the MaHaram of Papirush, from the Chida and In the Sefer “Refuah V’chaim” from the Kaf Hachaim. However, the accepted and prevalent text per those in the realm of the Mekubalim, is the text of the Rashash, which is in the tradition of the Arizal.
Its Segula: In the Sefer “Pri Etz Chaim”, Rabbeinu Chaim Vital writes: “The Pidyon Nefesh is a remedy for all calamities that may develop, especially for the healing of ill people. We have utilized it already thousands of times and it always worked immediately at the hour of need. Its effectiveness is self-evident to all people who proclaim ‘How wonderful are the ways of Hashem’.
Method of use: You donate 160 silver coins, pure silver that are the numerical value of “Etz” (as the Chida explains, that a human is compared by the
Torah to a tree) and Talmidei Chachamim perform the special Pidyon with the coins with pure thoughts. This way, the desired help is realized and the donor is blessed with healing, shiduchim, livelihood, healthy children, success, shalom bayis etc.
Holy Tzadikim: In the time of the emperor Napoleon, the holy Chasam Sofer did the “Pidyo Rashash” for all the residents of Pressburg, and although all the homes were destroyed in the war, not one Yid perished. It was a truly wonderful miracle. The holy Magid of Mezritch did the “Pidyon Rashash” for an esteemed woman who was critically ill, and she miraculously recovered. When the holy mekubal Rav Mordechai Sharabi was asked to pray on behalf of Jews who were very ill, he would do the “Pidyon Rashash for them and would say “it is a proven Segula”. The holy Ateres Tzvi wrote to the holy Ropshitzer, when the latter informed him that he was not well, “I did the Pidyon Rashash for you at Chatzos and thus I am very confident that you will see a Yeshua.”
Now Try it Out For Yourself! To take advantage of ths opportunity and be included in the Pidyon Harashash for the success of you and your family, that will take place on Sunday night of Parshas Beshalach, 10 Shvat 577, at the Tziyon of the holy Tana Rabi Shimon Bar Yochai, please call:

NEW N! UM COL QUESTION: When I ask my son to bring me something, he always brings me the wrong item and even looks for it in the wrong room. For instance, if I ask him to bring me the ketchup from the refrigerator, he’ll bring me the baby wipes from the bedroom. He seems so spaced out at times! What’s going on? LAURA STERN, OT/L RESPONDS: Most of us are familiar with the five senses of touch, taste, sight, sound and smell. There is, however, another powerful sense that takes place in the inner ear. We call it the vestibular sense. The vestibular sense is responsible for a person’s balance, the way they relate to movement and their perception of where they are in the space around them. This sense is kind of like the control center of the other senses, using them as tools to create a message that is sent to the brain, allowing it to process the full experience of a physical situation. We may not be cognizant of the fact, but there are many messages sent every single second throughout our brains and bodies, helping us to appropriately respond to our surroundings and tasks at hand. In order to do this, the vestibular system has to be in good working order. Unfortunately, the vestibular system in a person can become dysregulated, causing processing difficulties. When this happens, it’s like the proverbial wires are crossed, causing messages that should be sent to the brain to become distorted. While your child knows that you’ve asked something of him, he may not know exactly what, because his brain simply didn’t send him the full message. He

might end up grabbing whatever he sees first in whatever room he wandered into. Likewise, a child with an off-kilter vestibular sense will often seem forgetful, and can, for instance, come home with only two items from the grocery store even when the list you gave him clearly had three items.
LET’S LOOK AT THE CASE OF A LITTLE GIRL WE’LL CALL BAILY: Baily is sweet, quiet girl who loved to sit and watch everyone playing, but often didn’t participate in the active play around her. While kids her age were running and jumping, Baily would rather sit on the side. She’s not anti-social and is actually a favorite among her classmates, although she had trouble following instructions at times and even seemed rather inattentive in class. Baily would often slouch during the day, and seemed overwhelmed whenever she had to find a specific object in her desk or in the classroom. Assemblies were the worst, as Baily would lose herself in the crowd and wander around until a teacher spotted her and directed her to the place where she should sit. It was as if she was only partially there, even though her intelligence was on par with the rest of the class. You might have called her spacey. We called her normal, but dysregulated. In order to help Baily fully participate in the world around her, we had to help her process the world around her correctly. That meant we had to get her vestibular system running in tip-top shape. With Sensory Integration therapy, we were able to target the very root of her processing disorder. To strengthen Baily’s vestibular system, we engaged her in all sorts of movement activities, but were careful to not push her too far beyond her comfort zones. Spinning, rolling, somersaulting and swinging all help to balance the fluid in the inner ears, which regulate the vestibular system. At first, Baily didn’t like to do the activities very much, because it had a measure of discom-
fort for her. Any type of movement made her feel a bit nauseated, so we took it very slowly with her. Nowadays, she loves to move, run and jump just like the other kids. And as for following instructions? She gets them right just about every time.
• • • • • •
Do you recognize these symptoms in your child? It may be vestibular dysregulation. Clumsiness or stumbling Frequent slouching or preference for prone/restful positions Difficulty with written work Difficulty grasping instructions Movement that is slow and careful, as if the child is nervous about falling Seems lost in surroundings and has trouble locating objects
Alternatively, some children with vestibular dysregulation can have diametrically opposite symptoms and seek out constant movement. You might see things like: • A desire to constantly twirl, spin, climb, etc. • Lack of danger awareness (i.e. runs into street in front of cars, jumps from high places, etc.) • The inability to sit still or focus without moving The good news is that with Sensory Integration therapy, we can get your child’s systems up and functioning as they should be, b’ezras Hashem! * Names and identifying details have been changed to protect the privacy of our clients Do you have a question about your child’s educational or behavioral health? Send it to us and we may address it in a future column. Please send questions to info@kidsfirstservices.com

On Friday, January 20th, at 12:01 p.m., after an unusual and very unlikely journey, President Donald John Trump was sworn in as the 45th president of the United States of America, with the usual pomp and circumstance. The inaugural address that he delivered shortly thereafter was one that summed up the reason for his victory. At only 16 minutes, it wasn’t large on flowery words or idealistic rhetoric, but rather stated what his presidency was about: the people. It was not a conciliatory speech or a unifying one; there was no call for Washington to work together. Instead, it was humble and very toned down; in fact the entire speech included the word “I” only three times. It was about making this a government of the people again. And it showed that he understood the sentiment that swept him into office. The American people, the working class, blue collar workers, middle income earners, were unhappy with their government. They felt that there was a disconnect between them and the elites ruling them. And so the outsider, the man with no political past or connections, not even with his own party, was the one they chose to cast their vote for. Following the inauguration, there were celebrations which included a lunch on Capitol Hill, one at which Trump asked the audience to give a standing ovation to Hillary Clinton who was present, as well as a parade along Pennsylvania Avenue. But reality quickly set in. On Saturday, all across the country, massive marches took place. They were peaceful, but loud and spirited and definitely not in support of President Trump. The Senate Democrats too, were protesting in their own way, taking their time
with the approval process for Trump’s appointees. They do not have enough votes to block them but that didn’t mean they would let them through without trouble. And in the White House, Trump clearly demonstrated that he would not change his tune against the media. After Reuters released a sideby-side comparison photo between Trump’s inauguration and President Obama’s 2009 inauguration, both reportedly taken from the viewing deck in the Washington Monument, Trump responded by calling them “the most dishonest human beings on earth” at a speech he held in the CIA. In addition, he set out to check off item after item on his campaign promises list. He has signed executive orders concerning Obamacare, the Wall, the Keystone Pipeline and the latest has been an immigrant ban, restricting visas from seven countries the U.S. considered not stable enough to trust their vetting promise. For his supporters, it has been a welcome change. How refreshing — a president who keeps his promises. But for those opposed to these policies, his actions have garnered reactions ranging from outrage to terror. Many have spoken out, and his so-called Muslim ban especially got those on the left riled up enough to protest in airports where people arriving from the countries on the hold list were being detained. So not much has changed from election season. We are still a country fiercely divided. The traditional media vs. the newer instant media. Elites vs. The Average Joe. And it is up to our president to show that he can, in fact, accomplish what he set out to do, what he was voted in to do: repair a broken economy, safeguard the country and maybe even convince his detractors that the sky has not, in fact, fallen.

By: Shevy Hollander THERE’S AN OLD JOKE COMPARING HEALTH insurance to a fine lace blanket. They both cost a great deal, but don’t cover you all that well. After copays, deductibles and procedures that do not fall under the benefits umbrella, sometimes you may wonder what your costly premiums accomplish. But of course, as long as Obama’s influence still hovers over Washington, going without medical insurance is illegal and you can be slapped with a fine for neglecting to sign up. More important, though, is the risk factor. Nobody wants to find themselves in an emergency without medical coverage, running into astronomical bills in the event that procedures or hospital stays are required. And then there is dental insurance. If medical insurance is a lace blanket, dental insurance is a mesh shawl. There is a reason Delta Dental, one of the largest dental coverage providers, prefer to call their coverage “dental benefits,” because, in fact, there are benefits you receive — but are you covered for the expenses you may incur on behalf of your pearly whites for the coming year? Are you “insured” for the bills made out to you? Not really. At least you pay for what you get: Dental premiums are a percentage of health insurance premiums.

W H Y CA N’T DENTA L CA RE FOLLOW THE SA ME INSUR A NCE MODEL A S HE A LTH CA RE?
As we see in the graphic at the left, dental coverage is not an “insurance,” but rather a “pre-payment plan.” The reason it is so, is because dental care — unlike health care, fire, auto and the myriad other cases there are insurance for — is not an “insurable risk.”
You pay:
HE A LTH INSUR A NCE
Deductible (specified amount that the insured pays before the insurance company assumes the expenses)

Coinsurance (the rest of the bill, if not fully covered)
The characteristics of an insurable risk include: • Its chance of occurrence is uncertain, fairly rare and random. • The affected person has no control over the timing of the event or its consequences. • It’s an accidental loss. • The loss has major financial consequences. Fire, hospitalization, accident and sudden illness all have these elements of being unpredictable, un-budgetable and random occurrences that don’t happen regularly. They are all insurable risks. It makes sense for the insurance company to collect premiums and pay up for the percentage of insured people who face catastrophe. It also makes sense for the insured people to pay their premiums monthly or annually in exchange for this protection. DENTAL CARE DOES not fall under the category of an insurable risk, as the most common oral diseases — cavities and periodontal disease — have other characteristics: • Oral diseases progress slowly; it is not a catastrophe that hits in one day. People often postpone treatment until the damage increases, and have control over when to treat issues that arise. • The costs of dental care, while high, are budgetable, and more or less predictable. • Much of dental disease can be prevented with proper care and cleaning. • Dental care doesn’t heal oral disease with one or two treatment sessions; disease travels to other teeth; teeth that were already worked on pose greater risk of needing future treatment. 100-80-50 COV ER AGE
The model of dental insurance encourages what we know: Preventive care fends off oral disease, and early treatment of dental problems prevents them from progressing. To quote a wise woman I know, who tells her husband when he (average prices)

Preventive and diagnostic care are covered at the highest percentage, as it gives patients a financial incentive to seek preventive or early care. In this category are cleanings, checkups, routine x-rays, fluoride treatments and sealants.
These include basic procedures such as fillings, extractions, non-routine xrays, stainless steel crowns and periodontal treatment. A root canal may also fall into this category, or be treated as “major.”
Major procedures and services will be reimbursed halfway (as long as they’re under the annual max). In this category are dental crowns (usually), implants, bridgework, oral surgery, dentures, anesthesia and orthodontics.
doesn’t feel like shelling out the money for “just a cleaning” or when it progressed to dental cavities: “A cleaning is cheaper than a filling; a filling is cheaper than a root canal and a root canal is cheaper than in implant.” Preventive and early care are financially prudent.
IS DENTA L INSUR A NCE WORTH IT?
It’s a question that many wonder about, the proof being in the 36% of Americans that have no dental insurance. Whether it’s worth it dollar-for-dollar very often depends on the kind of care your teeth need and how religious you are about your exams, but there’s one big draw that having dental benefits surely has across the board: It encourages people to go for their dental exams and to be on top of their dental care, something that is very often neglected by those without insurance. Skipping the preventive care and neglecting immediate dental care ends up being more expensive in the long run. BA NG FOR YOUR BUCK Dental Insurance Alternatives under Affordable Care Act
According to Suze Orman, a personal finance expert, Dental Savings Plan is the way to get “more bang for your buck.” They are plans designed for members to save 10%-60% on the typical cost of dental care and treat-
ments. How Dental Savings Plans work: Paying a yearly membership provides members with access to many dental locations nationwide, and they get a discount every time they use a participating dentist, just by showing their member card. There are no limits, no paperwork, no restrictions and no waiting periods. They are available from healthcare brands like Aetna, Careington and Cigna, and there are many plans to choose from.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimate that 27 percent of U.S. adults ages 20 to 44 have untreated cavities. Of the people who have private insurance, 92% got these benefits from an employer, 7.4% purchased individual coverage, while just less than 1% obtain it as part of their medical plan. Q. Why are they called “wisdom teeth”? A. Wisdom teeth, also known as third molars, are not going to give you additional pieces of wisdom, if that is what you’re hoping. They get their endearing name because these molars emerge during early adulthood when you start to gain more wisdom and maturity. Q. At what age do wisdom teeth make their appearance? A. Between your late teens and early twenties, your wisdom teeth start to show up. Q. Is it possible to never to get wisdom teeth? A. Yes, there are actually many people who never get their wisdom teeth. According to research conducted by the American Association for the Advancement of Science, ancestry plays a big role in determining your likelihood of getting wisdom teeth. Around 10–15% of Americans with European backgrounds, 11% of African American, 40% of Asian Americans and 45% of Inuit people (from Arctic regions) never get their third molars. Q. What are the signs that an emergency extraction is needed? A. If emergency extraction is necessary, the symptoms will be evident. You will feel pain, tenderness and in extreme cases will have developed gum disease around the wisdom teeth area. Cysts and tumors can also develop in which immediate extraction would be crucial. In most cases, dentists can assess the timeline of when you should remove your wisdom teeth before they become painful and impacted. Q. If all four wisdom teeth need to be extracted, do you recommend doing all at a time, two together or just one at a time? A. It really depends on the person and how badly the individual teeth are impacted. Of course, for convenience, it is easier to get them all out during one procedure, which will allow for a shorter recovery time. If you desire sedation (being put to sleep), then all four at once will mean only getting sedated once. The advantage of removing two at a time with a healing period in between (top and bottom right molars, and then top and bottom left molars) is that you will always have a pain-free side to chew on.

Q. In which cases do you give general anesthesia? A. Depending on your anxiety level and the complexity of your procedure, we recommend three different types of sedation. • Local Anesthesia: It completely blocks the pain in the mouth while the patient is still awake. An advantage is that you can drive yourself home and there is no groggy stage after the procedure. • Twilight/ Semi-Conscious Sedation: An IV is placed and the patient is groggy, but is not fully asleep. You will not be able to drive yourself home after the procedure. • General Anesthesia: A combination of oral and IV medicine keeps you fully asleep. You will not be able to drive yourself home after the procedure. For simple cases, I would recommend local anesthesia. • For slightly difficult cases, local anesthesia is usually enough, however, there will be some pressure while the tooth is being removed. If you don’t think that you will be able to tolerate the pressure, then sedation is a great option. For complicated cases, I recommend sedation. Q. Does laughing gas help? A. Yes, for most people. Laughing gas (nitrous oxide) will give a euphoric feeling throughout the entire body. Many people say that it feels like they are slightly drunk/ buzzed. Nitrous oxide is very short acting and leaves your body shortly after it is turned off. There is no groggy stage after the procedure and you can drive yourself home. Q. How much swelling is expected and how should it be treated? A. This will depend on the severity of the case. Most people have “chipmunk cheeks” after surgery due to the swelling, but the swelling should go down within a few days. The best treatment is to use an ice pack twenty minutes on and twenty minutes off to reduce pain and inflammation. This can be done for the first three–four days after surgery. Starting on the fifth day, I recommend applying heat compresses to assist the drainage of the swelling. Q. Any foods/activities to avoid for a smoother recovery? A. Always listen to the post-operative instructions from your dentist. For the first 24–48 hours there are some do nots: no brushing the area, no rinsing forcefully/changing the pressure in your mouth, no spitting, no hot foods, no hard foods and no strenuous exercise. Gentle rinsing with salt water to clean your mouth should be sufficient. Chewing will be hard for the first couple days, so we recommend eating soft foods like mashed potatoes, soup, pudding, yogurt, applesauce, chicken, pasta, cottage cheese and yes, all of the ice cream you want! However, before you overindulge on milkshakes, we recommend protein shakes so you still receive the proper nutrients. One very important rule to remember is to not use a straw. This could disrupt

your stitches and the clot formation, which may lead to dry socket, which is when the clot that is protecting the gum where the tooth was extracted is dislodged. Sometimes, pureed food is recommended. For a full set of post-op instructions, you will need to ask your treating surgeon. Q. For which post-extraction symptoms do you need to call a dentist? A. Pain, swelling and bleeding is expected after the surgery, but your dentist should be called if bleeding becomes excessive and does not subside. If any kind of fever develops or if the pain escalates after three to four days after surgery, your dentist should be consulted. I prefer that my patients call me if they have any questions or concerns. A short phone call can usually help significantly. Q. What medications will be prescribed to me after the extractions? A. I usually give Motrin 800 mg to be taken every 6–8 hours for the first 5–7 days. This acts as an anti-inflammatory and anti-moderate discomfort. I also give codeine in case there is severe pain. Depending on the case, antibiotics may also be given. Some of the codeine side effects include nausea, grogginess, dizziness, constipation and altered mental status. Driving is not permitted when on codeine. For many patients, 600–800 mg of Motrin taken together with two extra-strength Tylenol will give the same pain relief as codeine, but without the side effects. This can be repeated every 6 hours. Q. If I have no pain, does that mean that I do not need my wisdom teeth removed? A. This is a false theory; significant damage can occur without any pain. Some questions that will guide me in determining if your teeth need to be removed are: 1. Is there enough space in the arch for the teeth to erupt properly?
2. Is there a tooth opposite it (in the opposite arch)? 3. Is the tooth easily cleansable during regular brushing and flossing? 4. Is this tooth needed right now to hold onto a denture or a bridge? 5. Is the tooth growing into another tooth (the second molar) and damaging it? Many dentists tell their patients that if it does not hurt, then don’t extract them. I 100% disagree with this false theory. If #5 is answered “yes” then I will definitely strongly recommend extraction, even if there is no pain! If numbers 1–3 are answered “no,” then I will recommend extraction but not as strongly. Q. What is the best age to remove my wisdom teeth? A. Since healing starts to slow down at approximately age 24, I recommend extracting them between age 16 and 24, although I do many extractions after 24 years old too. The earlier the extractions, the faster the healing. Panorex X-rays (and sometimes CT scans) will help guide the decision as to when to extract the teeth. Q. Does medical insurance cover extractions of wisdom teeth? A. Most medical insurances will cover extractions of wisdom teeth if they are fully impacted, meaning the entire tooth is still in the jaw bone. Since wisdom teeth start to erupt at approximately eighteen years old, this can also be a reason why many people will extract wisdom teeth at 15–17 years old. Q. If I am on blood thinners can I have teeth extracted? A. Yes. Although some surgeons will take you off your blood thinners a few days before the extraction, I rarely ask my patients to go off their blood thinners for surgery. I use a laser to stop the bleeding. The laser causes hemostasis of the blood in the socket. Post-operatively, I seldom have bleeding emergencies.
Should you have any more questions, I recommend that you schedule an appointment with a competent surgeon.

n our earlier sessions we touched upon the subject of drug and nutrients interactions and how one can decrease the effectiveness of the other. Due to poulor demand we are starting our new series “Drug Nutrients depletion and interaction where you will learn everything you need to know while taking specific drugs. Analgesics and Anti-inflammatories (In general, take these drugs with food to reduce gastric irritation. Alcohol can further aggravate gut.) Acetaminophen (Tylenol). Vitamin C can reduce urinary excretion of acetaminophen, increasing the risk for toxicity. Do not take more than 500mg of vitamin C per day while taking acetaminophen. If you are taking acetaminophen regularly, be cautious with alcohol as they can both damage the liver. Acetaminophen can deplete glutathione levels, ensure adequate intake of B vitamins and SAMe. Aspirin. Can deplete Vitamins B1 (thiamine), B7 (biotin), B9 (folate), Vitamin C, (Aspirin Increases urinary secretion of Vitamin C) iron, zinc. Taking aspirin before taking high-doses of vitamin B3 (niacin) can reduce flushing, make sure to divide them. Consider taking Vitamin C daily, and monitor you iron levels. Nonsteroidal Anti-inflammatory Drugs Diclofenac (Cataflam, Voltaren) Diflunisal (Dolobid) Etodolac (Lodine) Ibuprofen (Advil, Midol IB, Motrin, Nuprin) Indomethacin (Indocin) Meclofenamate (Meclomen) Nabumetone (Relafen) Naproxen (Aleve, Naprosyn) Oxaprozin (Daypro) Piroxicam (Feldene) Sulindac (Clinoril). These drugs inhibit some folate-dependent enzymes. It can also damage the GI mucosa. Consider taking an adequate dose of methylfolate, Vitamin C and omega-3 fatty acids daily which may protect the stomach lining. Pentazocine (Talwin), Meperidine (Demerol), Tramadol (Ultram). Stay off SAMe or 5-HTP. Anticoagulants Warfarin (Coumadin). Can deplete levels of CoQ10, calcium, magnesium, potassium, zinc and folate. Make sure to take Warfarin 2 hours before or 4 hours after taking magnesium, iron, vitamin B3 (niacin), and zinc. Do not take more than 200IU of vitamin E. Vitamin K can adversely affect blood thinners because it helps your blood to clot, no more than the DV of vitamin K is generally acceptable if taken every day at the same time and blood tests for coagulation remain in the normal range. Always talk to your healthcare provider before taking a new supplement, as many can interact with warfarin

As told to Ruchy Reese
IT WAS ONE of those nights that every mother dreads, in which the energy of the day has long since been depleted — yet physical demands continue to stretch into the supposed-to-be stillness of dark. My baby had been screaming for hours, and I was at my wits’ end, running solely on exhaustion and few sips of cold coffee snuck in between rounds of Sha-sha Baby. Sleep had long since been relegated to the world of dreams, and I was stuck in a nightmare. My baby was hurting and I couldn’t do anything to help him. He needed a doctor. As soon as dawn broke, I prepared the diaper bag, fed the sick baby’s now awake and hungry siblings who had miraculously slept through his howling, and then shuffled them all off to school. Somehow, I managed to get myself and the baby out the door, despite my bleary eyes and pounding head. By the time the pediatrician’s office opened, I was anxiously waiting outside, feeling pretty awful myself. In addition to falling apart at the seams, heat was radiating up and down my jaw and into my ear, despite the freezing December weather. “It must be his ears,” I told the doctor. “He’s in so much pain.” Nodding his head, the doctor peeked inside and confirmed that Baby’s ears were infected. “I know it’s unconventional,” I begged the doctor, “but my left ear is also on fire, and I am so, so tired from being up all night. I just can’t go to a doctor for myself now. Can you please look inside my ear and see if I have an infection as well?” “Clear as a whistle,” the doctor proclaimed. “No infection.” I muttered my appreciation, but must have looked rather confused, because the doctor offered a recommendation. “It’s not your ear, but it may be a

tooth problem. You might be teething — yes, at your age! Head over to the dentist.” And despite my exhaustion, I did just that, because the pain was simply intolerable at that point. “Impacted wisdom tooth. It’s got to come out. But I have no time for it today. Make an appointment with the secretary,” my dentist said. Resigned to my fate, I headed to the front desk where I promptly burst into tears when I was told the first available appointment would be in February. February?! Impossible! I just wouldn’t make it until then with this searing pain! As soon as I arrived home, I pulled out the phone book and started down the list. They don’t take my insurance, said the first one. They don’t have any time, said the next. And the third. And the fourth. Oh, and that one? They splintered my tooth the last time I was there and left me with a dry socket. Skip! The desperation was smothering me, choking me with a throat-hold. I was in so much agony, becoming so hopeless! Would nobody accept me as a patient? Would nobody take out that troublesome tooth? Putting away the phone book, I dialed friends, neighbors, relatives, searching for the proverbial needle in the haystack — somebody who had pull with an oral surgeon. Several Motrins and a few hours later, I was no closer to finding a doctor willing to excise that malicious molar. Where else could I turn? In tears, I called a medical referral agency to see what they’d recommend. Little did I know that I’d be headed to the Bronx… * * * * * I shouldn’t have come alone. I thought
to myself, hugging my arms tightly around me, a shudder running down my spine. Five minutes before the emergency dental clinic opened, the waiting room was already full — and the crowd didn’t look especially inviting. I’d thought I’d beat the rush. Thought I’d be the first one here. But I was wrong… After checking in, I tentatively glanced around the room, taking in the crowd of unfortunates. People here were suffering, and not only in the mouth. There were people missing limbs, people with deformities, people with odors that hinted at homelessness. And then there was me: a Monsey woman, from a comfortable home and mostly comfortable body. I felt my heart breaking for the people in pain who surrounded me. But I also felt fear. That mostly kicked in when I found an empty seat, but was quickly forced to abandon it when the woman sitting next to me began talking to herself, her eyes flitting angrily across my face. Unnerved, I stood and braced my back against the wall and waited for my name to be called. It didn’t take long until I was summoned into the dental chair, where I met my surgeon. Dr. Makay was a breath of fresh air. Well-groomed and pleasant, she put my heart at ease and skillfully removed the impacted tooth. I suffered no complications and returned home healthy — albeit with one tooth less. There in the Montefiore emergency dental clinic, located in an area I’d be scared to venture had I not been prompted by terrible pain, I was helped and I was healed. I guess it goes to show that sometimes, things aren’t what we’d expect them to be. Sometimes, the yeshua comes from the place we’d least imagine.

Edentulous: Without teeth
Prosthodontics: The branch of dentistry that deals with artificial replacements for teeth FAST FACTS
Just like regular teeth, dentures wear down over time. They should be replaced every 5–7 years. Luckily, most dental insurances cover replacements at five-year intervals.
Getting dentures can range anywhere from a low $300 all the way up to the $20,000 range. The average cost is roughly $9,000.
The human jaw shrinks with age, changing the fit of dentures. They need to be resized every now and again.
19% of American women over the age of 40 wear dentures.
A partial denture replaces only a few teeth, while a full denture replaces all of them.
Complete dentures give the wearer only 10% of the chewing power one has with natural teeth.
106 / THE MONSEY VIEW / February 1, 2017 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484
Dentures should be cleaned frequently and soaked overnight.
HISTORICAL BITES
Early forms of dentures were found in Mitzrayim, made from human teeth threaded with gold wire.
Other civilizations used animal teeth from oxen or wolves as early tooth replacements.
In Japan, dentures were made of wood. In the 19th century, body-snatchers frequently followed armies into battle and collected teeth from fallen soldiers which they then sold to dentists. These were nicknamed “Waterloo teeth” and sold for a pretty penny. Eventually, Waterloo teeth became a stigma and dentists were forced to create a newer version of dentures from porcelain.
Nowadays, dentures are made of durable plastic.
PRESIDENTURES
George Washington had several pairs of dentures made from different materials: Some were made from hippo tusk and elephant ivory. One was made from pulled human teeth — not his own! None of his dentures were actually made of wood.
George Washington’s dentures had a hole in them to accommodate his solitary tooth. You won’t find a smiling picture of George Washington on account of his springcontrolled dentures. He knew that if he’d smile, they’d fly right out!
John Adams never made peace with dentures despite his edentulous mouth. He chose to remain toothless. Franklin D. Roosevelt had a partial denture — and frequently misplaced it.

ACROSS
His mother understood his great yearning.
There was no Rav in Yemen who could satisfy his great thirst for Torah. He decided to search for a Rav to be his mentor.
Go, my son. May Hashem watch over you.
Ima, I heard of a great yeshiva of mekubalim in Yerushalayim called “Bais El.” I want to go to Eretz Yisroel!
So Shalom parted from his mother, his beloved brothers, and the Mori who had started his path in learning, and the rest of the community.
Hashem will be with you, my son, and watch over you wherever you go.
May the malachim watch over you along your journey.

Real Estate Pulling Teeth in the Mortgage World ONE OF THE MOST DREADED EXPERIENCE for a child and some adults is the annual visit to the dentist. Because of this, there are idiomatic expressions that have come to be part of our everyday language, sayings like, “It’s like pulling teeth” or “This is worse than going to the dentist” or “I’d rather go to the dentist than go through this. ” Unfortunately, after the excitement of choosing a home and then the signing of the contract, these sayings are used often in respect to the mortgage process. Why? What causes this angst? Is there a way to make it easier? The mortgage process is detailed and tedious. Most of the angst I believe comes from: a. People not being educated on what to expect regarding their documentation. b. Lack of communication throughout the process, so when documents are required and then submitted, no explanation is provided as to why what is sent is never good enough. c. The file was not properly put together initially, so the client is constantly scrambling and shifting gears. Some common examples of frustrating and seemingly endless documentation requests: Assets: The bank statements have a larger than normal deposit. The bank is requiring documentation proving where it came from. The clients says that it was transferred from another account that the client has. The documentation provided shows that the money was withdrawn from another account, and that account statement is provided. But once that account statement is received, we see that there was a large deposit in that account right before the transfer. Now we need documentation on that deposit… Once we get documentation from that deposit, it seems it was a return of a loan given by our client to a friend. The problem is that now we need proof about the original loan. The client has to pull out bank statements that are months or years old. And if the loan was not given to the person who now returned

it, the whole deposit may have to be excluded from the assets being verified and now the file may be short on assets and we cannot go further until this is resolved. Income: Client applies for a mortgage, states that their salary is $75,000 a year. They don’t have a paystub, but we see paychecks being deposited weekly into their account. We take the file and request documentation. The W-2 comes in that he made only $20,000 a year the year before. We request a letter stating why he got this enormous raise. The letter comes in and all seems okay, until we find out that the company that he is working for may be a family business and mortgage guidelines state that if a borrower works for family, the underwriter must document that the income being used is not a result of a recent extraordinary raise in income. It goes so far as to state that if the job is new and the salary higher than what they have earned at a previous job, then the income cannot be used at all for mortgage qualifying purposes until they have a filed tax return or a W-2 reflecting the
be denied the mortgage loan. Now the client has to call the student loan company, ask them what the payment would be and then have the credit bureau verify all this. This can take hours of time and it needs to be done usually during business hours.

higher income amount. Now we need letters from the business accountant stating who owns the company and whether our borrower is related to the owner. Credit: There are multiple student loans on a credit report and the payments are deferred. Now we need documentation as to what the payments would be had they been in the repayment phase. If not, we calculate the payment on 1% the loan amount which is usually much higher than the actual payment and this method can cause our client to
