TALK OF TOWN
Dear Monsey View, Thank you for your Places to Go segment. During the in between school and day camp time, I went to Croton Gorge Park and then Muscoot Farm. My daughter and I had an enjoyable excursion. I had a hard time pulling her away from the animals at the farm. I was surprised to see Chuck-E-Cheese’s as a place to go. I have never been there because, where I come from, no one will walk into a treif restaurant to play games. I’ve had several Monsey friends who have gone who told me they did not like to atmosphere and did not plan to return. I had emailed Chuck-E-Cheese’s to find out how they classify themselves. Are they an eating place with games or a game place with food? They wrote back that they are an eating place that had games. As a result, I am not sure who gave the heter for observant Jews to go to such a place. Please consider putting a retraction in your next Monsey View so people don’t stumble and go there. Good luck on your future issues. Sincerely, ~ L. Hurwitz
Memorial Park in Nyack (off Piermont Ave) It has a playground, picnic tables; it’s near the water and near the marina. Nyack Beach State Park has a plateau, which when open, affords additional fields, hiking trails, and gorgeous views. Ringwood State Park is in NJ but only a 20 minute car drive - beautiful place with lots to do there Bear Mountain State Park - far in distance but similar travel times to Havestraw. There’s Doodletown to visit. Cross the road and you have a beautiful trail alongside the water. Iona Island might be interesting to some people. Kakiat Park (off the 202) - fields, hiking trails, picnic tables. There’s a creek which boys enjoy wading in or walking alongside Rockland Lake State Park - biking, boating Monsey Glen County Park Kennedy Dells County Park (in New City) playground, fields, dog park Buttermilk Falls County Park has a waterfalls which can only be seen after a mild uphill hike (not for carriages). Beware that, as far as we know, there are no restrooms here. Bowline Point Park is far but has a beautiful beach. We were there when the beach was closed for swimming. I’m not sure what the situation is other times.
Since we are avid “goers,” we enjoy your Excursions column each week. We like to see the sites that are familiar to us, and we are always on the lookout for new places to visit. For example, though we’ve been to the Piermont Pier multiple times,Tallman Mountain State Park was a new one for us - what a gem! So thank you! In Issue #5, you featured local parks in Monsey. I would like to share some more parks our family enjoys:
Behind the DMV offices in West Haverstraw, along the Minisceongo Creek, there’s a small (local-style) playground with a path around it for kids to bike. Thanks again for providing us with weekly interesting and informative reading material. ~ J. Smith

Your Voice Garbage/Boxes in Monsey: I’m on a mission to bring Monsey back to the time I moved here 20 years ago. Today, one can drive around Monsey and see the beautiful children being raised in our community, meticulously groomed with beautiful clothes and well brushed hair. Then you see the garbage that is generated, and it makes you feel like someone has to keep control over it. Mostly, Thursday and Friday a lot of homes are getting groceries delivered, and then the boxes are just thrown out in front of their homes. As you drive by Route 306 on a Thursday or Friday, there is way too much garbage lying in the streets. Then if the garbage is not picked up before Shabbos, it reflects a very dirty community. So much so that friend I met in Boro Park on Sunday greeted me saying that she just spent Shabbos in Monsey, and “What’s with all the garbage there?” Hearing that from a visitor made me wonder how right she was. Can we put our minds together to fix this garbage problem?
We would love to hear your opinion! To reply to a question or to submit a new question, email comments@themonseyview.com or fax to 845-600-8483.
Dear Readers, This column is your podium, your forum to address community issues or concerns. Here, you can garner the advice and opinions of fellow neighbors, friends, and Monsey residents to a question or issue that you are grappling with or simply wondering about. Two of the replies to the teacher who was pondering the benefits of report cards in the primary grades: Dear Teacher, This is the first time in my life that I am writing to a magazine to answer a letter, but this letter triggered something that has been festering with-in me for a few years now. I am a mother of a large family, K’ah, mostly girls, and I fully agree with you regarding the time and “koach” it takes to write up report cards. But, what I noticed was, that as much as we wish our children all do well in school, this does not seem to be Hashem’s plan. Not every child is created to be a successful student, and sometimes, as hard as they try, they just don’t seem to be able to make it, scholastically or behaviorally. Choice, (bechirah) was given as a gift to adults, a child does not have bechirah. They work on instinct. As hard as they may try to please a teacher or a parent, they cannot always make wise choices until about the age of 12. Until then they work with instinct, which is driven by the nature Hashem gave the child at birth. What I observed watching my children and others is, if a child is not a good student they will suffer through school. By the time they reach the age of bechirah, they are so burned out they have no energy or inclination to work hard. I have also seen children who were just “born” for school. The type who just seem to know how to please teachers & parents. These kids get complimented again & again for something that comes naturally to them. When I go to PTA and hear a compliment for a child that enjoys school I feel like crying for those children who find it so difficult. These children go through all their school years knowing that no one is proud of them, everyone is looking down at them and then they get another slap in the face with their report card and their
failure is staring them in the face. And it is hard for a parent to hear so much negativity about a child and stay positive and have positive feelings for that child. The damage can be overwhelming. On the other hand the child who is doing well gets to hear about it. They get the choice parts and perks. The report card does not add much to their success. Neither the child nor parent needs to see the report card. They all know that everything is great. There definitely are a few in between students who may be able to use the boost, but considering the damage for those who don’t make it, the parents’ hard feelings for their child & the school, and the teacher’s hard work with the input, it is too much for me to feel that report cards are worth it. This is my humble opinion. ~ FW As a student, I feel that report cards have both advantages and disadvantages. As the second grade teacher wrote, it can “strike another blow to the already fragile student and boost the ego of an already brilliant child.” But I also think that report cards can motivate average students. Therefore, I think that in the younger grades, it’s a good idea to give report cards without marks - only comments. The teacher should try to be as soft as possible when giving negative reports and should balance them with compliments in the areas where they shine. This way, report cards can be a medium to motivate, boost, and not hurt struggling students. Yet, older girls should get regular report cards, because the official document gives them the motivation they need to study and apply themselves. ~ Malky - a high school student

KUPATH EZRAH: Our Community, Our Tzedakah Interview with Rabbi Mashinsky, President of Kupath Ezrah
How did Kupath Ezrah start, and how has it grown? Kupath Ezrah was established on Erev Rosh Hashana 1959, when Mr. Sam Nussbaum and Rabbi Mashinsky met and combined their burning desire to help the needy in the community. At the time, Monsey was just a small kollel hamlet with Bais Medrosh Elyon as its nucleus. That first year they gave out $1,200. More than fifty years later, Monsey has grown into one of the largest Jewish communities in the world. At its heart, Kupath Ezrah has remained a constant, providing hope and support to the needy of our community with dignity and sensitivity. Since its founding, Kupath Ezrah has
distributed close to 40 million dollars to poor families in Monsey What are your guiding principles at Kupath Ezrah? In accordance with the Shulchan Orach, one is obligated to give tzedakah to aniyei ircha, the poor of one’s city, before giving to others. Kupath Ezrah is a prime example of a tzedakah “by t h e people, for the p e o p l e ,” s e r vicing every s e g ment of the community by raising money within the community to be distributed to the needy of the community; from Airmont to Spring Valley and from Chestnut Ridge to Pomona.

In addition, Kupath Ezrah runs a very impactful matonos l’evyonim campaign; last Purim we raised over $200,000, which was dispensed on Purim day. The Keren Ohr Yaakov Emergency Utility Fund, established in memory of my brother, Rabbi Yaakov Akiva Mashinsky, z”l helps families who find themselves in emergency situations because of unpaid bills. Imagine what it means to be living without gas and electricity. Picture a mother bathing her children in the dark, in cold water, in the winter; families with no water who cannot flush the toilet. These dire circumstances are happening right here, right now, in our community. Another essential service we provide is the Grocery Debt Reduction Program, which helps families who have overextended their credit in the grocery stores and can no longer purchase food for Yom Tov. The Back to Work Initiative helps those who
It sounds like Kupath Ezrah touches all facets of life. Absolutely. Kupath Ezrah is not just a charity organization that gives a check and walks away.
It’s a comprehensive welfare organization that can assist in every aspect of a person’s life.
How much of your donations goes to the poor, and how much goes to support the organization? The Kupath Ezrah budget is 2.5 million a year, and this tzedakah is unique in that every contribution goes entirely to help the needy. The full operating budget, including office, rent, salary, advertising, mailings and events, is covered by Kupath Ezrah’s well-established thrift shops, The Nearly New Shop and the Furniture Exchange. Tell us more about these shops. Gently used clothes and small household items are donated to the Nearly New Shop and sold at deeply discounted prices to make shopping affordable to the community. The shop recently moved to a larger space at 126 Maple Avenue in Spring Valley. The Furniture Exchange sells d o n a t -
ed used furniture at low prices, allowing families to furnish their homes at very low cost.
What type of fundraising do you do?
Do you ever get feedback from families who Kupath Ezrah has helped? We receive hundreds of thank you notes and phone calls from people who we have helped in their darkest hour, whose lives were turned around by Kupath Ezrah. Can you share a story that shows the impact of Kupath Ezrah? The Torah tells us that one is blessed when one helps the needy. There are many stories that exemplify this, but a particular one comes to mind. Last Purim, a man came to me to make a donation to the matanos l’evyon fund. He asked for a brachah, since he had no children after many years of marriage. I told him that in the zechus of supporting Kupath Ezrah he should be blessed with a child. This Purim, he returned to share the wonderful news that his wife was expecting. Wow. Thank you for your time, Rabbi Mashinsky. May you and Kupath Ezrah have much hatzlacha in the coming year. Amein. Thank you.

Becoming Weigh Smarter 95% of Diets Don’t Work; Why? Did you ever start a new diet full of enthusiasm and hope, just to realize that it ended that Shabbos? Do you make a promise to yourself, every Sunday, that this week is a new start and you won’t eat anything forbidden on your diet? Then, on Wednesday evening you indulge on some forbidden food just to promise yourself that next Sunday you’ll start anew. If you are nodding your head, saying “Yes, that’s exactly me!” then you are in the race of people dieting and trying to never eat forbidden foods. However, when these dieters do inevitably indulge in forbidden foods, they feel depressed, guilty, and disappointed in themselves. They then make a new promise that lasts from Sunday until Shabbos. These people commonly refer to themselves as yo-yo dieters, binge eaters, or merely people without enough willpower. Assumptions: Although some people might achieve weight-loss through diet and restrictions, the majority of people gain the weight they lost, or even worse, they can only adhere to their diet a few days or weeks. Some assume that the reason dieters fail is attributed to things such as lack of willpower, personal or moral failure, laziness, or ignorance. However, I will now illustrate why these assumptions are not accurate. Diets: Let’s define what most people commonly refer to when discussing the meaning of diet. In their mind it’s associated with some type of severe restriction of certain foods or calories that’s temporary, being in the gym for
2 hours daily, or going to sleep with hunger pangs. Many times when I listen into people’s conversations, I will hear the following: “My son’s bar mitzvah is around the corner, my youngest sister’s getting married, and my niece’s wedding is taking place in a grand ballroom, and I need to drop 25 pounds really quickly.” Mazel tov to all these beautiful simchas and I do hope you look your best. The only issue I have is what happens when the simcha is over. Many statistics prove that most diets fail in the long-term. If diets work, how can we explain the huge obesity problem today? According to the National Institutes of Health, there are over 100 million overweight people in the US, and the numbers are on the rise. This is over 60% of the US adult population. The entire concept of dieting for fat-loss seems flawed. When you say you’re going “on” a diet, the underlying implication is that it’s going to be a temporary change and at some point you’re going to go “off” the diet. With this type of attitude, you may be setting yourself up for failure right from the start. You want to adopt a mindset of lifelong habits instead of short-term diets. The Problem: The problem is that too many people, myself included, and people I’ve worked with, really do have a strong willpower to drop weight and eat healthier. They try extremely hard, put lots of effort into the diet, and they still fail, either by not sticking to their “diet” long enough or losing weight but then gaining it all back. So, if willpower is not the problem, and let’s say you know exactly what to eat or avoid, why do so many people fail on their diet? I have multiple answers with some of them described in further articles. The first and foremost reason, I strongly believe, is people feeling DEPRIVED.
The majority of people really don’t like being deprived, but they think the only way they will lose weight is by banning certain foods. Let’s be real, are you ready to never have a taste of chocolate or potato chips in your mouth again? If you are, then you are from the 5% that are doing okay with typical “diets.” If you’re not, then chances are you will feel deprived and go off your diet sooner or later. One woman’s unfortunately typical dieting story: This is a remarkable but true story. A w o m a n called me awhile back frantically saying “I ate one cookie and I gained 30 pounds!” Not catching on to what she really meant, I calmly explained to her that under no circumstances is this possible. “Had you eaten an entire bag of cookies”, I said, “that also would not add up to 30 pounds!” “It must be a huge challenge and disappointment to gain that amount”, I sympathized, “but I would like to hear more in detail what happened.” Feeling that I was authentic and totally non-judgmental, she took the courage to tell me the real story. While she told me her episode there were sobs on the other end of the line.

Health & Wellness // You see, I needed to drop 50 pounds because my doctor scared me with my blood test results. My sugar, cholesterol and even my blood pressure were all expressing that an imminent diet is of crucial importance. I took it seriously, called up some friends and joined a “diet group.” I tried to be disciplined with all the rules and regulations and diligently followed them. My family and friends were extremely supportive and, day by day, even though my hunger and cravings were becoming almost unmanageable, I just knew that I had to lose those 50 pounds; then somehow, when that mission was accomplished, I thought I would be free again. I didn’t even realize how much my sub-conscious mind was absorbing all the speeches I listened to weekly. “You are not in control of your food,” we were told, and “You can’t make any decisions about how much or what you want to eat. If you ever cheat, you are off the diet!” Being over 50 years old I felt a twinge in my stomach, it made me feel uncomfortable how little control I had over my own food!!! Being told that this is how I gained these extra 50 pounds to begin with, and knowing that my health is at stake, I somehow agreed to these facts. I did end up losing 30 pounds, and I was very proud of myself, but I just had a huge craving one day for a cookie. Little did I realize that giving in meant I’m off the diet! And if I’m off the diet anyway, I rationalized, I might as well have the whole bag of cookies! And if I ate the whole bag of cookies, I might as well also eat a chocolate ice cream sundae and a crispy bag of potato chips! So you get the picture? This continued the past 3 months and I’m back to square one. I can’t forgive myself for eating that one cookie. Look what one cookie can add up to. I’m ashamed and so embarrassed that I hardly have any
Esty Weiss motivation to go out. And even more so, I cannot see myself starting a new diet just to see myself failing again, I just can’t. I listened patiently and tried to narrow in on everything I heard. “It sounds like you felt deprived while you were trying to reduce your weight and you were waiting for the minute you reached that 50 pound loss to celebrate with a lavish party.” Laughingly, she said “That’s exactly how I felt! Of course I felt deprived!”
The Solution: As you have now begun to identify the reasons why 95% of diets don’t work, you may be asking “What does work?” The true solution to lasting weight-loss will be described in following articles in this series. Have a healthy, weight-less week, Esty Weiss
Read next week’s article to see the answer to the question: “Skinny Mind, Skinny You.” Is this true? Self test – Are you a binge eater or an overeater? •
“Wouldn’t you have enjoyed a taste of that cookie without feeling guilty?” I asked. “Imagine having a small portion of ice cream or a few chips and just continuing with your life; do you think you would have gained 30 pounds?” “Of course not,” she replied, “but once I cheated I was off the diet anyway! How is it possible to taste something and not want to eat everything in sight? I don’t know how to do that.” “Would you like me to help you with that?” I asked. Cheerfully with a hint of enthusiasm in her voice she shyly reframed my question to reassure herself. “Of course I would! Do you really think you can help me lose weight again without feeling deprived?” “That’s 100% correct,” I said, “and I will, IYH, show you how.”

Do you eat very fast?

Do you eat beyond feeling full?

Do you feel that your eating is out of control?
Can you eat large amounts of food when not hungry?

Do you feel extremely upset, guilty and/or frustrated after eating a lot?
Do you prefer to eat alone in order to hide how much you’re eating?

Do you feel depressed and/ or very down after loading yourself with a lot of food at once?
Do you eat an excessive amount of food in one sitting? Do you do this least twice a week?
Results: If you answered yes to 4 or more questions, you are most likely an “overeater.” If you answered yes to 7 or more questions, you are most likely a “binge-eater” as well as an “overeater.” If you are an overeater or a binge eater, do not despair! Recap: Duvid comes home to find a shidduch for Malka in progress. Despite the Davidowitzes’ unwillingness to proceed, the shadchan brings the Goldrebs to their home.
Chaya’s Story:
Action is a prayer. You cry and you beg and you daven and wonder, and then you do a single act. You tell the Eibishter, “I’m ready for change,” and boom, everything changes, the entire landscape. Just like that. So I came back home from taking action. I’ve decided to do something so that Malka could become a kallah, so that all doors don’t get closed in our faces, the key belonging to those with small, clinking coins. And the next thing I know, the blush is slowly rising up Malka’s cheeks like it had when she was still a newborn and I held her for the first time and
her forehead was baby pink. She was being reborn a kallah.
overhead missile, to show me that Malka, already seen by the Goldreb couple, could now leave. I quietly instructed Malka to go to Tanta Sara, my only sister-in-law I could trust to keep silent about the exciting developments before they were fully cooked.
The Goldrebs were in my house. In my house. Sitting in the salon as if this was the most natural place for us to have a meeting. And we’re talking about finances. As if we always make deals the size of apartments in Mattersdorf. As if we are partnering “The Goldrebs took seats before here for something, which we very well are, if all goes I even told them to, which through. alerted me to their being far At first, I lost my footing more in the conversations. sin-free; than I was. It also told me that they liked what they saw in my Malka’la, a fact I had counted on. “So,” Rabbi Goldreb said, rubbing his hands together. “It’s time to talk tachlis.” I could see my husband sweating, because right under the wide brim of his hat, a blue vein bulged and throbbed, making his face appear canvas thick. His hat needed a dusting. “Finances,” I said, in what could have been my most casual voice. Here is where Esther Perkowitz stepped in to save the day. A hard-nosed negotiator, she started in the middle. “How much are you ready to put down for a girl like this?” Rabbi Goldreb made some consideration noises, but as all eyes were fixed on him, he said quickly, “Fifty percent?” “Fifty percent?” Esther sounded incredulous, jumping on the questioning sound Goldreb had interjected in his offer.
standing,” Mrs. Goldreb said. I liked her, and despite keeping my chest and lips very tight, lest I ruin the negotiation, I looked at her with favor. “Sixty it is,” Rabbi Goldreb says. “Nowadays, nobody gives less than a dirah in Mattersdorf,” Esther added. I blessed her and decided to forgive her all her sins. The parents nodded. “And you will give forty percent,” Esther told us. Duvid stood up and opened the windows. I knew he was very nervous. I spoke before he could. “Of course,” I said. “We’ll drink on that deal after the beshow meeting,” Esther declared. She sent the Goldrebs to get their son, while she told me to bring Malka back. “You did well,”
“I hadn’t known that about the Goldrebs. If I had, I would have expected more slack from Esther Perkowitz.”
“Sixty.” “Sixty?” Esther said. “Yes, sixty,” Goldreb said. “That’s the best you can do for a girl like that?” “We are not selling our son. We are helping our son start off his life with a girl of his

could have given her. She looked so gorgeous; positively not my child. I kissed her on both cheeks and said, “We were born into the world to reach the greatest heights our souls can, and we are reborn into Jewish women to reach even deeper levels of connection and growth. If this is meant to be your zivug, may you find in him the person who can share your neshamah’s journey.”
That’s when the Goldrebs arrived again, this time with a young, tall, and thin-faced boy who could steal your heart in a millisecond. I showed the children into the dining room, and they shyly took their seats. I allowed the men into the kitchen, while I squeezed into the alcove, beckoning Golda Goldreb after me. So this is what it feels like to do a shidduch, I thought. Just like any other night, squeezed into a small space with a woman you need to reach beyond your borders to make conversation with. Somehow, the air feels richer, the light feels brighter. But otherwise, no sounds from Shamayim to let you know you’re doing the right thing. Golda tried to make conversation. “So what project are you starting to sew?” she asked, nodding toward the many spools of thread and the bolts of fabric lining still lying around, waiting for me to make place for my new business.

“It’s actually still pretty new, so I don’t know yet,” I said. “What do you do? Do you work for parnassah?” “Me?” she said and sounded incredulous. “No. I’m a mother of children. The Eibishter sends parnassah through other ways.” We were silent for a few minutes, as I digested the attitude that until now was also my own, but hadn’t really worked. “We have a few dirahs,” Golda said casually, by way of explanation. Oh, so you’re rich. I hadn’t known that about the Goldrebs. If I had, I would have expected more slack from Esther Perkowitz. Why did I think she was being kind for giving us ten-percent less brick load in the deal? I felt hot in that tiny alcove. “Okay,” I said, pushing aside the heavy brown curtain that divided us from the tiny kitchen. “I think it’s time to call it a night.” “Don’t we drink a l’chaim now?” Golda followed closely. “We always sleep on it for a night,” I said, calling on my years of experience and mistakes, where no practical information existed. “Yishuv ha’daas comes only with time.”

I stalked into the salon. The Goldreb boy stood, while Malka remained seated, trancelike. Through what felt like a haze of emotions and distortions, I walked the Goldrebs out, making promises and wishing them so many blessings that they should still feel obligated to us the next morning. Once back inside, I found Duvid leaning over the counter, head in hands. Malka was still seated, unseeingly. Zelda’s cake stood in the center of the table, fluffy, crumbly, haughtily, untouched. “What did we just do?” Duvid said from between his palms. “I have no idea,” I said. “I have no idea.” To be continued…

EXCURSIONS
This week’s spotlight is on
BERKSHIRE MOUNTAINS in Western Massachusetts As the warmth of spring gives way to the sweltering heat of summer, those of us left in town might be shifting our thoughts toward some sort of leisure. While a plane ride or extended vacation is not always feasible for a variety of reasons, our budgets and schedules can often stretch enough to accommodate a day trip or a 2-or 3-day getaway. Throughout the summer, in addition to local trips, Excursions will focus on some extended trips not too far from our town, and provide attraction, lodging, minyan, and food information. In this week’s issue, we will feature one destination that can be planned as a full-day family trip, or alternately, an overnight one. Whether you’re itching to get away as soon as the camp boxes are on their way to the Mountains, or you’re thinking ahead to the Bein Hazmanim season, you might want to experience what will prove to be an unforgettable retreat in Berkshire Mountains.

EXCURSIONS Mt. Greylock is the highest peak in Massachusetts at 3,491 feet. The views from atop Greylock are unbelievable; you can access those views by driving up the 8-mile road to the summit. (While hiking up the rugged Appalachian Trail is also an option, it is an all-day endeavor and suitable only for experienced climbers in excellent shape.) The drive up takes you through a thick alpine forest and eventually to fantastic overviews of the valley below. As you ascend Mt. Greylock, the valley gets smaller and smaller. The panorama is breathtaking; the surrounding towns seem like quaint Swiss Alp villages rather than suburban townships of modern America. If the natural summit perch wasn't enough, a 100-foot tall lighthouse with an observation deck seals the deal. (Visitors to Greylock felt that the climb inside the lighthouse wasn’t worth the unclear views that the foggy windows provided, and that the scene from outside on the summit was that much nicer.)

FOOD & FAMILY BLUEBERRIES For a wonderful summertime treat, take the entire family out for an afternoon of blueberry picking, then turan your bounty into irresistible treats. Blueberries are nature’s perfect gift. Quite possibly one of the healthiest foods around, they require no peeling or pitting. An added bonus: they’re beloved by both kids and adults. You’ll enjoy to pick them as much as you enjoy to eat them. Even if you get them straight off the supermarket shelf, these recipes will let you capture the boundless joys of a beautiful summer day.

BLUEBERRY
The combination of tangy lemon and sweet blueberries takes this muffin up a notch.
Muffins 1. Preheat oven to 350
This muffin is really best using fresh blueberries, but if you are using frozen ones, defrost them fully and drain all the water. Then, before adding the blueberries to the batter, toss in 2 tablespoons of flour; this will prevent them from ‘bleeding’ over the entire batter and turning it grey.
2. In a large bowl combine all dry ingredients 3. Using a fork slowly add the wet ingredients until just combined
2 ½ cups flour
2 eggs
4. Fold in the blueberries
¼ teaspoon baking soda
1 ½ teaspoons lemon zest
1 teaspoon salt
¼ cup lemon juice
1 ¾ teaspoon baking powder
¼ cup soy milk
5. Divide the batter evenly among 12 muffin tins. Bake for about 20 minutes or until toothpick inserted in center comes out clean.
1 cup sugar
1 stick margarine, melted 1 ¼ cup blueberries
BLUEBERRY & APPLE This is the best and easiest pie you can ever make. Leave it on the counter and watch it disappear. 2 sticks margarine
2 teaspoons cinnamon
1 1/3 cups brown sugar
4 granny smith apples, peeled and thinly sliced
2 cups flour 2 cups oats
2 cups fresh blueberries
Pie
1. Preheat oven to 350. Melt margarine and brown sugar in the microwave. Mix flour, oats, cinnamon and melted margarine and sugar in a large bowl. Press half of the mixture into the bottom of a 9x13 baking pan. 2. Place the sliced apples onto the crumb and pour the blueberries over the apples. Top with the second half of the crumb. 3. Bake for 45 minutes.

BLUEBERRIES WITH DAIRY MAPLE FLAVORED
3 cups fresh blueberries, washed well 2 tablespoons sugar 2 tablespoons brown sugar 1 teaspoon lemon zest
2 teaspoons lemon juice ¾ cup heavy cream ¼ cup sour cream ¼ cup maple syrup
Cream
1. Combine blueberries, sugars, lemon zest and lemon juice in a bowl. Set aside. 2. Using an electric mixer, beat the heavy cream until stiff. Add the sour cream and continue mixing. 3. With the mixer set on low speed, slowly add the maple syrup. 4. Divide blueberry mixture evenly among bowls and top with maple cream.
This recipe takes literally minutes to prepare and is extremely refreshing. It’s perfect for a light dessert for an elegant dairy meal, but is simple enough to prepare if you just want to treat yourself anytime. Heavy cream is found in the dairy section of the refrigerator right next to the milk. You can freeze the rest of the container for future use. EGGS
You might have noticed that the price of eggs in your local grocery store has gone up. Since April 2015, more than 12 percent of America’s egg laying hens- or 39 million birds- has been affected by Avian Influenza, also known as bird flu. Bird flu has spread through the US like wildfire, and has forced the USDA to order millions of chickens to be slaughtered as a precaution. This has made the supply of eggs tighter and has resulted in record high egg prices across the country.
Hard boiled facts Egg Ratings: Eggs are graded by the USDA based on their quality and appearance. Grade AA eggs have thick, firm whites, yolks are high and round, and are best for frying or poaching. Grade A eggs are similar to AA eggs, except for the whites are slightly less firm. Grade A eggs are most commonly sold in groceries. Grade B eggs have thinner whites and a flatter yolk, and are commonly used for commercial liquid, frozen, or dry egg products. Egg Size – The most common sizes of eggs seen in supermarkets are jumbo (greater than 2.5 oz.), extra-large (greater than 2.25 oz.), large (greater than 2 oz.) and medium (greater than 1.75 oz.). Most recipes for baked items such as custards and cakes are based on the use of large eggs. The white of a large egg measures about two tablespoons’ worth of liquid, the yolk is about one tablespoon. Brown vs. White Shells: An egg’s shell color doesn’t indicate the quality or nutritional value of an egg, but rather the breed of the hen that laid it. Hens with white feathers tend to lay white eggs and hens with red feathers tend to lay brown eggs. Long Shelf Life: The next time you buy a carton of eggs, notice that the package comes with a Sell By date rather than an expiration date. Your eggs should be edible for a 3-4 weeks after that date, so don’t toss them in the garbage until then. But don’t leave eggs out! They’ll age more in one day at room temperature than they will in one week in the refrigerator. If you’re not sure an egg is still good, you can safely rely on your nose: If it is no longer fresh, you will be alerted by its unmistakable offensive odor.
Three Questions: What came first, the chicken or the egg? This familiar question may not leave philosophers scratching their heads, but the answer is clearly written in Chumash, Parshas Breishis. There the Torah tells us that on the fifth day of Creation Hashem created all winged birds after their kind. This includes also the egg-laying chicken, of course.
How do you tell if an egg is hard cooked or raw? Spin it! If the egg spins easily, it is hard-boiled. If the egg wobbles, it is raw. Because the liquids have set into a solid, a hard-boiled egg will easily spin. The moving liquids in a raw egg will cause it to wobble.
What is that green ring around the yolk of my hard-boiled egg?! That occurs when eggs are overcooked. It is a chemical reaction between sulfur and iron. Running cold water over freshly cooked eggs until they are completely cooled may prevent the greenish ring from forming.
NUTRITIONAL NUGGETS • A large egg has 72 calories, and 5 grams of fat – about 1.5 grams saturated and 2.6 grams unsaturated. It is considered a medium-fat food. • A large egg supplies 12.6% of the Daily Reference Value (DRV) for protein. A little over half of the egg’s protein is in the white and the rest is in the yolk • The egg has the highest biological value of any food. This means that the egg’s protein is the highest quality protein of any food, and is the most completely absorbed by the body. The egg is a complete protein food because egg protein has all nine of the essential amino acids (as well as all nine of the nonessential amino acids). Scientists often use egg protein as the standard against which they judge all other proteins. (See chart) Biological Values of Protein On a scale, with 100 representing top efficiency, these are the biological values of proteins in several foods.

• Research has shown that, compared to bagel eaters, when overweight and obese people ate a breakfast including eggs, the egg eaters’ appetites were satisfied longer and they ate fewer calories the rest of the day. • The yolk contains a higher percentage of the eggs’ vitamins than the white, including all of the eggs’ vitamins A, D and E. Egg yolks are one of the few foods that naturally contain vitamin D. • And don’t worry about the cholesterol: An egg contains 2/3 of your recommended cholesterol intake, but it turns out this isn’t a big deal. Studies show that regular egg consumption does not increase risk of heart disease.
How to Cook a Perfect Egg Place eggs in saucepan, and cover with an inch of cold water. (Some research suggests that adding 2-4 tablespoons of salt per gallon of water makes eggs easier to peel.) Set pan over medium-high heat, until water begins to simmer. As eggs cook, adjust heat as needed to maintain a brisk simmer. (Cooking eggs in bubbling water cracks the shell and makes the eggs tough and rubbery- a gentle simmer works much better.)
Soft boiled: 2 minutes- The white is solid, but the yolk is still runny.
Medium boiled: 4-1/2 minutes- The yolk
is solid but still dark orange-yellow, moist, and dense in the middle. Beautiful and delicious quartered on a salad.
Hard boiled: 8 minutes- The yolk is completely solid, light yellow, and crumbly, with no sign of the telltale green or gray ring around the yolk that’s caused by overcooking. Perfect for egg salad or deviled eggs. The Boil-and-Walk-Away Method:
For another way to hard-boil eggs, begin as directed above, but once the water reaches a brisk simmer, turn off the heat and let the eggs sit uncovered in the hot water for at least 10 minutes and up to 30 minutes—the water cools gradually, preventing the eggs from overcooking. This is a great method when you’re multitasking and can’t pay careful attention to the eggs.
Never attempt to cook an egg in its shell in the microwave. The steam builds up so rapidly that the egg can’t ‘exhale’ it fast enough, and the egg may explode.
Peeling Eggs When the eggs are cooked, carefully pour out the hot water, leaving the eggs in the pan. Set the pan in the sink under cold running water for a few minutes until the eggs are barely warm. If the shells are stubborn, try peeling them under running water. The fresher the egg, the more attached the shell, so for boiling, older eggs are preferable.
Egg Allergy
Egg allergy is one of the most common food allergies in children, second only to milk. It usually first shows up when kids are very young. Most kids outgrow an egg allergy by the time they’re 5 years old, but some people stay allergic. Most people who are allergic to eggs react to the proteins in egg whites, but some can’t tolerate proteins in the yolk.
Ayer mit Tzvibel It is a minhag to eat a dish that consists of eggs and onions chopped up and mixed together at the daytime seudah. The sefer Divrei Tzaddikim states one reason why we eat this particular dish: eggs symbolize mourning. We include eggs in our seudah in memory of the three tzaddikim who died on Shabbos, Moshe Rabbeinu, Yosef Hatzaddik, and Dovid Hamelech. What is the significance of eating onions? We honor the Shabbos by eating a variety of tasty dishes, corresponding to the manna which tasted like anything one could imagine-with the exception of the taste of onion. To make up for the missing flavor we eat onions at our Shabbos meal. (Taamei Haminhagim)
Conclusion: It is explained in seforim that one of the reasons why it is customary to eat an egg as a sign of mourning, is that an egg has no “mouth” and cannot complain. Similarly, the mourner who has lost a close relative must not complain to Hashem for having taken away a dear one. This is also the reason why the Seudah Ha-mafsekes before the Fast of Tisha b’Av begins, consists of a hard-boiled egg dipped in ashes, as a sign of mourning for the Destruction of Yerushulayim and the Bais Hamikdash. The egg thus reminds us to keep our lips sealed and utter no complaint against Divine Providence. Indeed, an egg has no mouth and cannot complain. But if an egg did have a “mouth” it would not stop proclaiming the wonders of the Creator, which are to be found in the simple and all-too-familiar chicken egg.

Cutting the Clutter Organizing Your Kitchen and Beyond
Little things mean a lot, especially in the kitchen. Sure, when you think kitchen you start contemplating large appliances and where you are going to store your pots and pans, but it is those small, carefully placed items that make your kitchen truly functional. Try to think about how you use your kitchen, so that you can set things up in the way that makes the most sense for you and your personal kitchen habits.
and great ways to streamline your time in the kitchen. If you opt for paper towels over cloth dishtowels, there are plenty of great possibilities. Stand up holders keep those all important paper towels nearby and make it super easy to tear off one sheet at a time as you need them. If you are short on counter space, hang a paper towel holder on the underside of one of your cabinets or buy an over the door paper

While the smartest place to store these not so small items is under your kitchen sink, they can sometimes be on the large and unwieldy side and don’t necessarily fit. Check out folding dish racks, available in a wide range of materials and colors to match any kitchen, while saving valuable space. One last category of items to consider making a place for in your kitchen are disposables, including plates, cups, cutlery and napkins, which we use so often given how hectic our lives can be on a daily basis. Feel free to take advantage of great pricing when you buy these items in bulk, but keep just a small selection in your kitchen; store cutlery upright in caddies, pencil cups or even inexpensive plastic containers, and stack like sized plates so that they take up less room. Keep the larger boxes anyplace you have room for them and replenish your kitchen stash of disposables as needed. BROUGHT TO YOU BY

I. Downloading your Photos: the basics
II. Organizing your Photos
Keeping your photos stored on the camera card is taking a chance that your images will get lost, damaged, or simply neglected. Once a month you should set aside time to download the photos from your camera (and phone) to your computer. Downloading is simple. Either use the accompanying USB cable to connect to your computer (phone), or remove the SD card (camera) and insert in the SD slot on your computer. When your computer reads the connection, you will be prompted to choose an action. You will want to select: Open Folder to View Files. By clicking on that selection, you’re gaining access to the folder(s) storing your photos.
- On your desktop, create a new folder, and name it for the year.
After you’ve created the folders on your desktop, (see Organizing your Photos), copy and paste the photos from your device folder to your newly created desktop folder(s).
About PICADILLY PICADILLY is a photo shop devoted to the art of photographing and sharing the milestones in life. The joy of working with customers as they celebrate their memories is something we experience every day. The camera captures the moment, and we make it last forever. Photo Prints – Photobooks – Photo Albums – Photo Gifts – Photo Displays – NEW! Photo Studio Photo consultations and solutions for Photo Enthusiasts, Interior Decorators and Event Planners – and for anybody with a camera in his pocket.
- Within that folder, create 12 new folders. Name each folder for the months, using the numerical system (ex: 01 – Jan, 02 – Feb. This will keep the folders listed in the chronological order of the months.) - Within each month’s folder, create more folders with specific titles. Bella’s graduation, Lag Ba’omer in Miron. Your organized system will now look something like this: 2015 > 04 April > Chol Hamoed Safari 05 May > Lag Baomer Miron 06 June > Bella Graduation Spend 15-20 minutes a day going through the folders and deleting the photos that are not “precious.” Fight the instinct that tells you that each photo is special. Keeping many bad photos only makes it harder to find the good ones.
III. Editing your Photos As you delete the duds and find the keepers, it’s a good time to do some editing. Many of these edits can be done in-camera with simple settings. For the more advanced editing suggestions, there is software to achieve most any effect you could possibly think of. For those who want flawless editing, there are editing shops (like PICADILLY in Town Square) where your photos can be manipulated and recreated to your specifications.
with saturation and contrast in a photo, it is also very useful for enhancing an image that is valuable in content but may not have the best lighting.
When doing your own editing, work your own recipe rather than following textbook instructions.
Vignetting – The original meaning of vignette referred to a decorative border in a book. By adding a vignette to a photo, you are decreasing the image’s brightness or saturation at the edges or corners of the photo, which are furthest away from the center of the photo. Usually vignettes are oval or circular in shape. This effect should be used sparingly, as not every photo benefits from vignetting. In professional photography, vignetting is often undesirable. It is popular because of its simple application.
Red-eye removal – A red eye can ruin the best of pictures, but a simple click provides an easy fix, and usually this automated tool does a fairly good job. While removing red eye from a photo, advanced users can also enhance the eye area further by lightening and brightening the eyes with additional applications. If you have ever seen amazing eyes in a photo, there is a good chance it has been edited in Photoshop.
Blemish Removal – Removing spots and blemishes in real life is not so easy, but editing them out of a photograph is effortless. Acne and scars take a mere few moments to disappear, and with a few additional adjustments, freckles and scabs are gone, too.
IV. Faux Effect Photos Cropping - Cropping photos gives you a second chance to frame your images in a way that is more pleasing to the eye. Sometimes cropping is used to remove a distracting element in the background, such as the distant cousin who is mid-yawn during portraits while the immediate family is posing happily in the foreground. Or, cropping can be used to reshape your photo from horizontal to vertical. This is very clever editing when there is too much background. Be careful when cropping though, as cutting too much from a photo reduces its sharpness considerably. Skin Softening – Some cameras have this feature which softens and smoothes skin with a simple setting. This tool removes harsh shadows on the face and also reverses the natural effects of time in aging subjects. This is a very popular effect for wedding portraits where the mother of the bride would like to reverse the hands of time. Skin softening must be done carefully as you still want to retain some texture of the skin. The trick is to keep the face looking natural, yet flawless. Sepia – Sepia is a reddish brown color that adds a vintage look to your photograph, creating the impression that it was actually taken decades ago. Sepia tone communicates nostalgia, and with it a simpler sweeter time. Since sepia is more forgiving
Professional photographers experiment with filters to create the most spectacular portraits. Here are a few tricks for artistic work you can achieve on your own. Try these on a summer day when out at the waterfront. (Samples of this work can be viewed at PICADILLY in Town Square: taken with a simple Canon point-and-shoot camera) - Seaweed: Drape a few pieces of seaweed over the lens of you camera and snap a few shots of your subject frolicking at the water’s edge. Leave some part of the lens exposed. The photos you produce with this effect will be breathtaking. - Sunglasses: Have your subject wear a pair of reflective sunglasses, and gaze out at various points of interest. Shoot the images that are reflected in the glasses lens and you will find yourself with more than one winning image. What an unusual and unforgettable way to capture a summer day. - Cellophane: Attach different colored pieces of cellophane paper to your camera lens by using rubber bands. Blue, red, yellow and green are good colors to work with. Be careful not to wrinkle the cellophane as this will blur your photo. Photograph the people around you, and keep changing the colors on the lens. You can also cut the cellophane
so that only half the lens is covered. The results are breathtakingly beautiful! - Petroleum: Smear a very thin layer of petroleum jelly over parts of the camera lens to fog up or just soften the picture. By drawing swirls or streaks with the jelly over your lens you will produce some very interesting flared areas in your photograph. Wipe away any excess petroleum jelly with a cloth. - Nylon: Cut a square of nylon and attach to your camera lens with elastic bands. The nylon must be stretched tight or the entire picture will appear out of focus. The nylon can be layered, so long as it is stretched tight. The color of the cloth will influence the picture. The effect you’re getting is an overall healthy glow of the skin. It’s a magical potion for perfect summer smiles. Some of the most popular requests for photo editing: - Fix the face of a child who was crying or doing cross-eyes during a family photo shoot. Notes: this can be achieved quite seamlessly by finding an identical shot and replacing the offending mug. - Add a person to the family portrait, especially in event albums, where the person could not be present at the simcha Notes: for best results, use a photo of the missing person which has similar lighting and background colors, ie: natural lighting to match a portrait taken outdoors. - Change the background in a photograph Notes: it is strongly discouraged to “cut out” the background and replace it with a different setting. It rarely looks seamless and often yields unprofessional results. The solution to this problem is to blur the unwanted background and keep the subject sharp and in focus. This is especially popular for photos taken of rabbanim at a chupah or event, where the surrounding people distract from the serenity of the subject.
- Remove braces Notes: no two teeth are alike, and recreating a tooth where the braces shine forth….not such a good idea. Not worth the time and effort. Authenticity is the way to go in such scenarios. - Open a person’s eyes Notes: it is not possible to actually open a person’s eyes in a photograph. (Nor is it possible to close a person’s mouth.) However, much like fixing the face of the weeping child, by finding a very similar photo taken where the subject’s eyes are open, the eyes can be swapped out for the more befitting eyes that gaze forward. - Slim the person Notes: yes! It can be done! The liquefy tool does a very good job of trimming off a few pounds to appear lighter in photos than in real life – (the reverse is usually true). A tool which requires a steady head and a healthy does of realism. V. Storing your Photos The best backup for your photos is still the printed photo. Using a store kiosk for printing your photos is a good option, since the local shop wants your business, so they will be a great source of help and information to help you get your photos printed right. Once you have your photos printed and stored in albums, it really serves as a great backup for your images, as – based on research - one of the first few things a person considers retrieving from the house in case of fire is the family’s photo albums! For digital backup, an external hard drive is inexpensive and invaluable. The price starts at around $100 for 500 GB of storage, which stores about 200,000 photos taken with a regular point and shoot camera. Follow the steps described in the section: Organizing your Photos, and drag and drop the organized folders on to the external hard drive. Store the drive in a level, dry place.
FYI: CDs and DVDs are not considered reliable and long-lasting terms of storage for your photographs. Unless you buy the expensive archival quality discs, your images will likely be lost to time down the road.

A Massive Manhunt; A Dramatic Conclusion Malone, New York: After tunneling out of maximum-security cells, Richard Matt and David Sweat waited for the Jeep, driven by a cooperating prison employee, that would take them to Mexico.
police encountered him near Malone, New York. His whereabouts were exposed when he attempted to hijack a bypassing camper. The driver heard a loud noise and thought a tire had blown. Eight miles down the road, the driver found a bullet hole in the trailer. A tactical team raced to the scene of the shot, smelled gunpowder in a nearby cabin and saw evidence that someone had fled out the back door.
It never arrived. Eighteen days of cabin stays and bushwhacking later, the partnership that spawned one of the most improbable prison escapes in New York history crumbled, as Sweat left his older accomplice behind for fear that he was slowing them down.
A flash of movement and a noise, possibly a cough, did Matt in. A command to raise his hands went unheeded. He never got a chance to fire his 20-gauge shotgun before he was shot by police.
Until this weekend, investigators were a step slow, too, bogged down by dense vegetation, slow responses and miscommunication.
A NY state trooper captured Sweat on Sunday after firing two shots at the fleeing escapee. Sweat, 35, is hospitalized in serious condition in Albany.
The nation closely followed the riveting hunt unfolding in New York. The past few
“At some point, running across a field, he realized that Sweat was going to make it to a tree line, and possibly could have disappeared, and he fired two shots,” NY Police Superintendent Joseph D’Amico told reporters. A photo shows Sweat in custody moments after his capture. He appears bloodied in the photo and is wearing a camouflage outfit, not prison garb.
days had turned up tantalizing clues: a broken-into cabin with evidence of Matt’s presence, candy wrappers at a camp where someone had apparently rested, an opened bottle of grape-flavored gin at an empty hunting cabin. Matt, 49, died Friday when
“I can only assume he was going for the border, that he was that close,” D’Amico said. Sweat’s capture meant that for the first time in more than three weeks, upstate New York residents awoke Monday to a day that wouldn’t involve navigating police roadblocks or the fear of encountering a
desperate and dangerous escapee with little to lose. “It’s been a long 23 days, but this morning, the woods just feel like woods again,” one resident exulted.
Bug Repellent and Pop-Tarts Not only did Sweat manage to swap his prison garb for camouflage, he also had a backpack full of supplies. “He had maps, he had a certain amount of tools, he had bug repellent, he had wipes, he had Pop-Tarts,” Gov. Cuomo said. It’s not clear whether Sweat acquired those supplies before his escape, or if he stole or collected them while on the run. As for Matt, an examination of his body revealed “bug bites on the lower extremities, blisters and minor abrasions consistent with living in the woods for three weeks,” state
police said. Evidence suggests Matt had been ill, possibly from contaminated food or water, the source said. He was also likely intoxicated. Matt was dressed in dark brown pants, a dark green jacket, and heavy, dark colored boots when he was shot, the Coroner stated. “He was dressed for the woods. He would blend right in if he stood still.” Superintendent D’Amico said the men may have used black pepper to throw off their scent from the dogs that were tracking them; he said Sweat’s DNA was recovered from pepper shakers found at one camp.
face solitary for an extended period of time.” Investigators believe Sweat and Matt had gathered information for almost a year about hunting cabins and the fields around the prison to help them navigate the terrain.
SpaceX Rocket Breaks Up After Launch
What’s Next for Sweat Sweat will be charged with escape, burglary and other charges. In addition to his current life sentence, Sweat will probably spend at least seven years in solitary confinement, said Jeff Dumas, a retired sergeant at Clinton Correctional Facility. As a state prisoner, he isn’t eligible for incarceration at the supermax prison So what incentive would Sweat have to talk to investigators? Possibly getting out of solitary confinement early, Dumas said. “It’s a bargaining chip for him now, he’s going to be locked into a cell, 23 out of 24 hours a day, in solitary confinement. ... He’s going to try to use that as a bargaining chip so he doesn’t
A SpaceX rocket that was headed to the International Space Station (ISS) exploded soon after launch on Sunday morning. The rocket took off from Cape Canaveral, Fla., at 10:21 a.m., and everything seemed fine until 2 minutes at 19 seconds. Then video of the launch showed harrowing, if now familiar, images of a rocket exploding into a plume of smoke. The unmanned rocket was bringing more than 4,000 pounds of food and supplies for astronauts now on the space station, including a spacesuit, spare parts, and a docking port built to allow future manned missions to
dock at the space station. The cause of the explosion has not been identified. It was the third cargo mission to the space station to be lost in recent months. SpaceX is a private company founded by entrepreneur Elon Musk. Musk said that his company and NASA are investigating the data to find out what happened to the rocket. “We will work closely with SpaceX to understand what happened, fix the problem, and return to flight,” NASA administrator Charles Bolden said in a statement. “This is a reminder that spaceflight is an incredible challenge, but we learn from each success and each setback.” NASA officials said the station’s astronauts have enough supplies to last until October. After the retirement of the space shuttle, NASA lost its ability to fly astronauts from U.S. soil, and has been paying the Russians more than $70 million a seat to fly American astronauts to the station. But NASA hopes to use contractors to end that dependence, and last year awarded contracts to SpaceX and Boeing to develop a capsules that can carry astronauts to the space station.
The Greek Financial Crisis, Explained in Fewer Than 500 Words First, in three sentences: Greece, the weak link in the eurozone, is inching closer to defaulting on its debt. The country has been in a long standoff with its European creditors on the terms of a multibillion-dollar bailout. If the country goes bankrupt or decides to leave the 19-nation eurozone, the situation could create instability in the region and reverberate around the globe. When Greece joined the euro in 2001, confidence in the Greek economy grew and a big economic boom followed. But after the 2008 financial crisis, everything changed. Every country in Europe entered a recession, but because Greece was one of the poorest and most indebted countries, it suffered the most. The unemployment rate reached 28 percent in 2013, worse than the United States suffered during the Great Depression; one in two young people are without work. Wages and pensions have been cut. Shops are shuttered. If Greece wasn’t in the euro, it could have boosted its economy by printing more of its currency, the drachma. This would have lowered the value of the drachma in international markets, making Greek exports more competitive. It would also lower domestic interest rates, encouraging domestic investment and making it easier for Greek debtors to service their debts.
But Greece shares its monetary policy with the rest of Europe. And the German-dominated European Central Bank has given Europe a monetary policy that’s about right for Germany, but so tight that it has thrust Greece into a depression. So Greece is squeezed between a crushing debt burden — 177 percent of GDP, about twice the level in the United States — and a deep depression that makes it difficult to raise the money it needs to make its debt payments. For the last five years, Greece has been negotiating with European Commission, the European Central Bank, and the International Monetary Fund (dubbed “the Troika”) for financial assistance with its debt burden. Since 2010, the Troika has been providing Greece with loans in exchange for tax hikes and spending cuts. Rich European nations such as Germany believe they’re simply insisting that Greece live within its means. But the austere terms of the bailouts have caused resentment among Greeks and contributed to crisis-level unemployment and poverty. In January, they elected, Alexis Tsipras, who promised to reject the previous bailout deal and secure a more favorable agreement. But he has very little leverage. In 2010, Greek debt was widely held by private banks, so a Greek default could trigger a financial panic. But since then, this debt has been consolidated in the hands of rich European governments, greatly reducing the risk of a financial crisis if Greece defaults.
So Greece faces a hard choice: it can accept the Troika’s demands for further austerity. Or it can defy the Troika, which would likely lead to a default on Greek debt and possibly a Greek exit from the euro. The Greek government is holding a referendum on July 5 to let voters choose between these bad options. In the meantime, the Greek economy is melting down. Knowing that Greek euro deposits could soon be transformed into devalued drachma deposits, Greek people have been rushing to ATMs to withdraw as much cash as they can. That has forced the Greek government to close the banks and limit withdrawals to €60 per day. Seeking to calm a whirlwind of uncertainty that has battered global markets, opened deep fissures in European unity and threatened to push Greece out of the eurozone, European leaders insisted on Monday that a deal was still possible to settle Greece’s spiraling debt crisis. But they gave no indication that this could happen before Athens runs out of cash to pay loans due on Tuesday.
The currency of the European Union (EU) is called the euro. It was introduced in 1999, and in 2002 it became the sole currency of participating EU countries. At that time the national currencies of these countries—such as French francs, German deutschemarks, and Italian lire—ceased to be legal tender. The euro is represented by the symbol €.

MONSEY REBRANDED It’s sale season! Every other advertisement is slashed with a blazing red percentage sign. If you’re the type of person who looks out for sales all the time and only shops with discounts, think about this: Would you want you as a customer? Devoted Discounters
One Hundred Percent Value
Smart Discounts
When you see all those people streaming through your door after you’ve blasted a sale, know that they’re not loyal to your brand, but rather they’re loyal to discounts. And the only way you will be able to get them to come again is to continue to devalue your products and services.
Buy one diamond get second one free!!!
Having said all that, sales are still a huge part of the economic fabric; here are some ways to use discounts as a platform to continue to brand yourself.
When you market via deals and discounts, you may even be breeding and creating more members of the “lovea-sale community.” As they peruse your merchandise and see the value you’ve discounted they’re thinking, “Tell me again, why did I ever buy full price?” And don’t be surprised when they come to the check -out counter and begin haggling and asking for more discounts. Loyal customers, however, spend on average 67% MORE than new ones with repeat purchases – making them high ROI prospects. Research shows that return purchasers have higher average order values and are more likely not to question your pricing.
•
Use discounts as a token of appreciation to your loyal customers. These discounts are not blasted to the public but are conveyed through a more personal channel like email, mail, or even faceto-face. Have you ever seen an offer like that? And if you have, what would your first thought be? Inevitably you will become suspicious. When you think of your product, and more importantly the experience and service you offer, you will see it as a diamond, very precious and a commodity. You will think many times before offering a deal, and you will find that you are coming up with more creative ways to attract customers without devaluing yourself which we will discuss next week.
Arrow Research! What does a sale mean to you as a consumer? 1. 2. 3.
Appreciation
An opportunity to grab a bargain A cry of desperation A brand that’s a bargain center rather than high-end
4. I don’t think about it
•
Generosity
Sometimes the public sees business owners as greedy or domineering. Using discount to assist the more unfortunate or a donation opportunity like: “We’ll donate half of the profit to...” shows that you’re sharing with the community and puts a heart into your business. •
The 4 seasons
If your business is seasonal, you probably don’t have much of a choice, and will invariably offer discounts as the season comes to a close. People, unfamiliar to your brand will be attracted to the offers, but think about ways how can you turn it into an opportunity to show them how much more your brand has to offer. As David Ogilvy said, “Anyone can put on a deal, but it takes genius, faith and perseverance to create a brand.”

By the Number EGGS-CITING FACTS Nationally, the egg is the single most-purchased food item, to the tune of $12,200,000,000.
Each of the roughly 280 million laying birds in the U.S. produces from 250 to 300 eggs a year. In total, the U.S. produces about 75 billion eggs a year, about 10% of the world supply. About 60% of the eggs produced in the U.S. each year are used by consumers. An additional 25% of eggs are turned into egg products which are used mostly to make restaurant meals, and by food manufacturers to make foods such as mayonnaise and cake mixes. The average American eats 250 eggs per year, which translates to a total annual consumption of 76.5 billion eggs in the U.S. Harriet the hen laid the world’s largest egg in 2010, measuring a hefty 9.1 inches in diameter.

Serial for Kids //
A sequel to
Dina
Sury Spitzer
Like today, all children in the United States in the early twentieth century were required to attend school. Children walked to school. Most of the teachers walked, too. There were no parking lots at the school buildings. In New York, some children used the Jitney bus to come to school, but that cost a nickel each way, and most families could not afford the luxury. Girls always wore dresses to school with knee socks and
that was sometimes worn until the shoes fell apart. Many children wore shoes that had cardboard put in to cover holes in the soles of the shoe. Also, mothers would make elastics to keep the socks up. They would take a piece of elastic and measure it around the child’s leg just below the knee and sew the ends of the elastic together. The child would wear the elastic on top of her stockings to keep them from slouching. Classrooms of the 1930s were much stricter and more regulated than modern classrooms. Children often sat at wooden desks that were attached to wooden seats and nailed to the floor. C h i l d r e n w e r e

corner, an inkwell. Children would fill their pens with ink from the inkwell. They also used pencils and lined writing tablets, which were notebooks, often with pretty covers, for math, spelling and writing. Some schools used slates, which were like miniature blackboards or chalkboards, written on with a slate pencil or chalk. All student desks faced the large teacher’s desk. The wall behind the teacher’s desk was covered with blackboards for writing. The blackboards had narrow g r o o v e d shelves at the bottom to hold

Generally, the teacher would hang a photograph of the president and a map of the world. Also, classrooms had a United States flag in front of the room. Students’ work was not displayed. There were no computers, photocopied worksheets or white boards. During lessons, the teacher did all the talking and the children did all the listening. There was no partner work or group work. Children learned for information and content, not for meaning and understanding. English, math, geography and history were the main subjects. Children had to raise their hand to answer a question no talking out of turn. They had to write very neatly in “copperplate” style, and sit up straight in their hard seats. If the teacher set them a task, they had to just do it or be disciplined. If you were told to write a composition, you wrote a composition. Otherwise you were punished.

Manners were expected to be shown at all times. This was the American way. Discipline methods varied. There was the cane: a long, thin bamboo slapped hard on either children’s hands or their backsides. Children who got answers wrong might be sentenced to sit in the corner. Some teachers used a ruler to slap children on their knuckles or their backs. Children were taught by their parents that “if you get a whipping in school, you will get one at home, too.” In school, immigrant children were taught to be American. The American dream of owning a beautiful home and car, and of achieving anything one set out to do was held out to everyone alike. Unlike back in Europe, where Jewish children were shunned and shamed in public school, in America, Jewish children were offered the same opportunity as the rest of the class. Jewish

English edu families in the insular neighborhoods back in Europe. What’s more, in the difficult times of the 1930s, when many men were out of a job, it became ever more difficult for Jewish men to earn money if they refused to work on Shabbos. T h u s , m a n y fathers sadly worked on Shabbos, and without Shabbos, their children, who were attending public school, soon became more American than Jewish. Nevertheless, in the Eisen home, Tatte insisted that the boys attend Yeshiva instead of public school, even if it did cost more money and did not provide an excellent English education. For the girls, Tatte had no choice but to send them to public school. Tatte undertook their Jewish education personally to ensure that his daughters grow into fine Jewish women.
Tatte’s daughters were expected to spend their free time at home. In fact, on one Simchas Torah night, when Dina showed up at home late, Tatte made her eat the Yom Tov meal alone in the kitchen as punishment. Dina never again lingered outside after dark. And so, although Dina and Miriam learned to love to be American in school, there was little room for Americanization in their home. There were Jewish schools in New York in 1932, however they were all secular. And so most immigrants from the Eastern European shtetel chose to send their girls to p u b l i c s c h o o l , which they were familiar with from der heim, rather than to schools with newfangled ideas on Yiddishkeit. Sadly, for many, public school and Americanization meant losing their children to Yiddishkeit. In 1937, the first Bais Yaakov School was established in Williamsburg. Miriam asked Tatte to transfer her to Bais Yaakov. However, Dina, worried about the extra expense this would put on Tatte, chose to remain in public school all through high school. Although Dina continued to attend public school, she remained a pride to Tatte and the family throughout her life.

Carry on, South Monsey! South Monsey stands poised to take their Eiruv to the next step.
Ten years ago, the askanim of the small but growing frum population of South Monsey had a vision. They envisioned South Monsey as a burgeoning frum community. They pictured a neighborhood where someone strolling through it would see more than just well kept houses and lawns being mowed. They would see little boys, with payos and kapelach, riding bikes, mothers wheeling carriages and fathers escorting their sons to shul.
Issue. Then there are the insurance policies we have to purchase and of course charting out the map, which also entails much research and decision-making. The truth is, at this point we believe we can have the eiruv up in time for Rosh Hashana, im yirtzeh Hashem.”
They set out to turn this vision into a reality through various means, and one of them was through constructing an eiruv. What better way to turn a town into a true Yiddishe community? Young mothers would be able to leave their houses with carriages on Shabbos to attend each other’s simchos or just to visit. Neighbors would be able to come to each other’s rescue on Shabbos if they ran out of basics like pampers or eggs. The daunting task of raising enough funds for the eiruv’s construction did not deter this group of pioneers and visionaries. The Park Avenue community donated upwards of $55,000 to get the project off the ground and in a matter of weeks the eiruv was complete.
Says Rabbi Rubin “The only thing we need now in order to get the eiruv up in time for Rosh Hashana is funds. We need to pay a fee for each pole that we use for the eiruv, which requires funds. Insurance costs money. A big expense is the erecting and upkeep of the fence on the Garden State Parkway and the Thruway. And of course, we must expand our devoted team of bodkim who trek through wooded areas and tangled brambles, in snow and stormy weather, to ensure that the gate and the eiruv remain intact. All in the entire project will run us approximately $100,000. In addition our eiruv truck just broke and that in and of itself is a tremendous expense.”
The original eiruv was built with an eye toward the future. Its parameters encompassed a five-mile stretch between Rt. 45 and Cherry Lane. At that time imagining the expansion of the frum community into those borders seemed optimistic beyond one’s wildest dreams. Today, these wildest dreams have been far surpassed. In the past ten years, hundreds of heimishe families have moved into the area. In the last year alone, approximately 150 families from the city have relocated to South Monsey. The frum community now includes almost the entire villages of Airmont and Chestnut Ridge. The time has come to once again expand the eiruv so that it encompasses the entire community and allows room for more. Despite the hurdles the eiruv committee is up for the task. Rabbi Zalmen Rubin, the director of the eiruv committee and the son of the rav hamachshir of the eiruv the Kolbisova Rav, Rabbi Mendel Rubin, explains, “This has been an ongoing project and we’ve already cleared many obstacles. It might seem simple; put up some poles and string and you’re done. But there’s the legal aspect that many wouldn’t even imagine. First there’s the licensing we need in order to erect the eiruv. After that there are the negotiations. After much negotiation Orange and Rockland has given us the requisite licenses to expand the eiruv into New Jersey. And I must thank AJ Straus for assisting us any time we needed help with any legal
Are there other obstacles that need to be surmounted before this occurs?
Does he think that this amount of money can be raised in such a short amount of time? “Absolutely,” answers Rabbi Rubin. “The community was the force behind the original eiruv and I believe they will strongly support the expansion as well. It says in tanach “B’zaam titsad haaretz.” B’zaam stands for stands for zevicha (shechita) eiruvin and mikvaos. These are the three things every community must have. The world stands on them. Supporting an eiruv is a segulah for many good things. The Shinover Rav once said it was a segulah for having children. Even people who don’t carry with an eiruv can benefit from it. This way they ensure that even if they leave something in their pocket on Shabbos they are never machshil in carrying. It’s a win-win situation, something everyone gains from and I know the community will come through.” As Rabbi Rubin says, it’s truly a win-win situation. Support the eiruv and you will have made an investment into your quality of life and your community that will reap infinite dividends. What better investment is there than that?

HOW CO-SIGNING A LOAN AFFECTS YOUR CREDIT One of the key components mortgage qualifications is, having enough income to support the mortgage payment. This, is I feel, is one of the biggest challenges we are facing in our community, and probably the single reason, more than any other reason why a young family remains renting instead of buying a home. Credit can be improved, assets can be saved, gifted and inherited... But a lack of income or work history cannot be easily remedied. If someone is looking to buy a home and they do not qualify because their income is too low, a non-occupying co-borrower or a Cco-signeor is a great solution, but it does come with serious responsibilities for the co-borrower and serious concerns for the home purchaser. The most common question asked in regards to this past is: “What are the consequences of co-signing for someone else’s mortgage?””? The first thing to address is the term “co-signeor” vs. “cCo-borrower.”. When you sign for someone else, you are accepting equal responsibility to repay the loan. It is not like the traditional co-signeor relationship, where- if the loan were to default-, then you have to step up to the plate and pay it back, ; you are equally responsible. That means that the loan is on your credit report, and if it is late, then you will be reported as late. In the mortgage world, the major difference between a co-signeor vs. a non-occupying co-borrower is the co-signeor is NOT on the deed and title, thereby having NO ownership in on the home and the non-occupying co-borrower would be on the title and the deed and share ownership of the home. Let us answer the questions that come up in regards to co-signing a loan.
Let us answer the questions that come up in regards to co-signing a loan. How will this affect my credit? This loan will be listed on your credit along with all of your other debts. If it is paid on Will only half the loan be my responsibility and only that portion be on my credit report?: Since you are an equal; partner in this mortgage debt, your credit report will reflect the
If I want to buy a house in the future, will I be able to qualify for another mortgage if this mortgage is on my credit report? If the loan is being paid on time, and the other party’s check is paying the loan, and you can prove it with 12 months’ cancelled checks from the other party, then this debt is excluded from the debt ratio. Now tThis is a current mortgage qualification guideline. As we have seen in the last 18 months, there have been tougher restrictions on qualifications for a mortgage, so this can change, although I haven’t heard anything yet..
For how many years am I responsible for the loan? You are responsible for as long as the loan lasts.
If I have a co- borrower, what happens if something happens to me, will they now “inherit” or “own” my house? This is a great question. My answer is to speak to your attorney. There can be issues especially if your co-signer is on the deed of the home. These concerns need to be
Ann Zeilingold
addressed up front. Your attorney should advise you on these sensitive issues.
Who is the best candidate to be a non-occupying co-borrower? In my opinion, someone who is

very close to you, preferably a close family member such as a parent or grandparent.
will be on your credit report and can affect your ability to get credit.
Many families are able to buy a home only because they have a co-signeror. There is no simple recipe that I can provide to you with guidelines on who will be a good co-signer. If you are going to need a co-signer, look for one before you begin to look for a home and have your mortgage professional pre-approve them to see if they will be able to help you in this endeavor.
Will I be considered a “First Time Home Buyer” if I am a co-borrower? Some first time homebuyers programs only check to see if you have claimed the mortgage interest deduction on your tax return. So if you aren’t paying the mortgage and you do not claim the interest, you may still qualify. I would say that you should go into this assuming that you wouldn’t qualify and if you want to buy a home down the road, look into each available program at that time.
If I have poor credit, will a co-borrower with great credit help me? We qualify customers based on the lower middle score of all the borrowers. So while a co-borrower with great credit is great, it won’t mitigate the fact that your credit is poor.
