Dear Editor, Thank you very much for a wonderful weekly that we really enjoy. I just wanted to point out that at Shepherd Lake, aside for the boat rentals, there is also a swimming area on the lake that is completely open, and on a nice day is full of people swimming there dressed for the occasion. Your publication is great! From the beginning of the week, my kids start nudging me to bring home The View from the grocery. Since The View made its appearance, Friday afternoons changed from a long, boring, I-don’t-have-what-todo day to being busy with such creative, productive fun activities for all ages. ~ T.S. Dear Editor, One day, a while ago, I had good reason to be astounded, even shocked. Here’s why: A large group of young yeshivah yingelech (presumably pre-1A and/or first grade), together with their two rebbeim, were using my front lawn as a shortcut without having gotten reshus from me, the owner of this private property! Instead of teaching our kids that making use of someone else’s possession without reshus is an averiah, called geneivah, they led their innocent, young charges to sin. And if the above wasn’t enough to keep them away, they also paid no attention to the NO TRESPASSING sign displayed in their full view on a tree ahead. From a practical point of view, the area in question being part of a construction site right now, and not easy or safe to cross (B”H none tripped or fell), what will the mothers think when their little sons come home with very muddy shoes?

It has been ten very medically challenging months since our precious daughter was born after years of waiting and a very complicated pregnancy. She continues to defy medical odds. When our Rav instructed us to make a seudas hodaah with a minyan, the obvious choice was Kollel Chatzos, as they have been learning and davening for Ahuva Bracha for more than a year.

EVERY MIDNIGHT the distinguished talmidei chachomim of Kollel Chatzos gather in locations across the globe. During the darkest hours, when the rest of the world sleeps, they immerse themselves in vibrant Torah learning, bringing zechusim and yeshuos to klal yisroel.

The seudah took place in the Monsey kollel at 1 am with the entire Kollel and numerous guests in attendance. Immediately thereafter the talmidei chachomim continued their nightly learning. It was such a beautiful and meaningful way to give thanks to Hashem! It gives us tremendous strength and hope knowing that the kollel members have her in mind every night.

Has Our Town Turned into a City?

I would like to use this forum to reach out to the Monsey community at large in the hope that we can reach a solution.

I would like to bring up an issue that’s bothering me. As Monsey is growing, I miss the peace we once had. I understand that the population is growing, yet Monsey should not become a city! Throughout the week it is almost impossible to put kids to sleep at their regular bedtime. The noise outside is hammering. And if I dare be the bad neighbor to try get the children quiet, I am surely insane! It doesn’t finish here. If one lives next to a shul or simcha hall you can forget about sleep until 1:00 am. What has become of the norm of yesterday? Has all the menchlechkeit we learned since toddlerhood vanished? If parents were mechanech their children and would yenta less outside - later than they should - then we wouldn’t have this problem with the youngsters! Please, may I ask you all what you yenta all day long? Lashon hara? Rechilas - which will only bring machloikes? Or do you show off what you did, bought, cooked,etc, causing jealousy?

I am on a gluten-free diet, and my children are also gluten intolerant. Coming from the city, I realized that Monsey is lacking eateries and restaurants that sell glutenfree food. I believe that many aren’t aware of the demand for it and that there are quite a number of people on such diets. Changing just a few minor things can make a major d i ff e r e n c e for those suffering from gluten intolerance. Ingredients such as flour can easily be substituted with cornstarch for identical taste and consistency; providing gluten-free pasta, soy sauce, pizza, etc. for consumers is easy, and would be so appreciated. Fish and salad shouldn’t be the only available options for those on a glutenfree diet. ~ Gluten-Free

Robbing someone else from the serenity she deserves?

disappointment stabbed her again. It was still as empty as it was before. Chaya sunk to the floor. She was completely drained, empty of hope. How? How could she continue on like this? She dimly heard her baby stirring awake in the other room, but the haze of pain left her lethargic and slow. And so lonely. It was all on her shoulders. Everything. The apartment, the bills, the job…. Her family lived in Eretz Yisroel and Chaim’s family…. the pain stabbed so sharply, for a minute, she couldn’t breathe. Chaim. Her husband. Her deceased husband. She was a widow. It had all happened so suddenly. One day, he was complaining of headaches, and before she knew it, their lives had been swept up in a whirlwind of doctor appointments and treatments while she struggled to function through the shock and upheaval. And then, just as suddenly, all was too quiet. He was gone. And so were

Sighing, he dropped his bag on the table and went to the fridge to get himself a fruit. But the drawers were empty. “Mommy really needs to go shopping,” he thought. The pantry was pretty empty too.

Moshe’s face lit up with a smile. “Ma,” he said,

His parents, Holocaust survivors, were quite elderly. They made ends meet but that was all. They had nothing to spare for her. And so she did all that she could. But it wasn’t enough. She negotiated with the schools, asked her landlord for more time, and pushed as many due dates as far off as she could. But the food? She had played all the games and they were done. She had racked up credit at so many stores that they no longer accepted anything but cash. And cash she didn’t have. The front door slammed, as her children piled into the home at the end of their day, knocking her out of her reverie. They ran into the kitchen and stopped short seeing their mother in a small, huddled heap on the floor. Their eyes held so much sadness, so much pain, too much for their few years. They no longer asked the question, “What’s for supper?” But she saw the hope in their eyes fade a little more each day. Pain upon pain upon pain. They were hungry. Everywhere she turned, she was haunted by their precious, hungry eyes. And an empty cupboard.

We will dance and sing and play games… but no cake.” Moshe swallowed his tears. His mother was trying the best she could. But they really had no money. His special day at school, his dreams, his hopes for making new friends, they all vanished and crumbled in the face of reality. His mother would try to make him feel good at home, but he knew that at school, it would be a day just like any other. A very un-special day.

The Monsey View presents this true story to help spread L’asurim’s message. L’asurim is committed to assist Jewish prisoners and their families by supporting them throughout their incarceration and beyond. As a service to the community, L’asurim will be sharing important information and insights on crime prevention in a weekly column in The Monsey View.

Just like in the books, it was dreary and overcast on the day my fate was sealed with a bang of the gavel: twelve years, seven months in prison. My lawyer pleaded for leniency, arguing that all my incriminating actions were erroneously carried out by a naïve young man; but the judge dismissed those claims as groundless. Ignorance is not an excuse for not following the law. If my story inspires even one person to conduct his life and business with integrity, it will be well worth the discomfort of putting my painful story in the limelight. An Unsuspecting Suspect It all began when I got a simple secretarial job at age eighteen. The office was conveniently located, I was learning new and exciting office skills, and the boss was happy with my work. That’s all that mattered to me. For the first three years, it never occurred to me not to trust my boss. Only when I grew older and more worldly did I realize that what my boss was doing was not really legal. I thought that he was looking for loopholes in order to outsmart the law and was treading on what I thought was a grey area of law. He was taking much bigger risks than I would ever dare to take. It never dawned on me that my boss’s business ethics would be my problem. Besides, no one ever got caught with this kind of stuff. Right? Wrong!

About two years after I left that job, I was on a business trip in Louisiana, when a friend called me at 5 am to tell me that my former boss and co-workers were being arrested. I chuckled at his joke, reminded him of the time, and went back to sleep. When my father called me two hours later and told me about the multiple arrests in the community, I realized that my friend hadn’t been joking. That’s when I felt the first twinge of nervousness. I thought about how I would have to turn myself in at the police station when I’d get back to New York. I expected it would be inconvenient and unpleasant.

that I would need a lawyer, but some of the questions seemed insignificant to me, and I did answer them. That was a mistake. The First Few Days in Captivity I stopped feeling innocent at my arraignment. The prosecutor rapidly listed one charge after another and announced the recommended sentence for each until my head began to spin. A quick calculation told me that my total sentence, incredibly, would amount to 240 years! They took me to jail and put a bag of food into my cell. I asked them if they had anything kosher. The wall clock in my room wasn’t working, so I didn’t even know what time it was. After a day and a half, someone gave me a special form to sign in order to access a phone. It was less than a week to Pesach, and I was so far away from home!

saw Harav Avraham Yaakov Horowitz, shlita, Rav of Djikov–Melitz in Monsey. He placed a yarmulke on my head and had handed me a pair of tefillin. I excitedly grabbed the tefillin and quickly put them on. I had a lot to daven for. At twelve o’clock at night, I was finally brought to my tiny cell. It took two days until I got used to clearing away enough space on the floor so I had room for my feet when getting off my “bed.” On Friday, Erev Pesach, I was awakened at four in the morning and taken down to the “bull pen.” Today, I was told, I would be taken to the courthouse. In the bull pen, we were all squeezed together on the floor, where we waited for them to bring food.

When I asked for kosher food, the response was, “What? Kosher? There’s no kosher food here! You don’t want to eat this food? So don’t eat!” I was used to starving by then. When I arrived to court, I was advised by two lawyers that if I cooperate and give them information about my accomplices, I could greatly shorten my sentence. I told them what I’d already told the FBI agents in Louisiana: “I’d love to cooperate and I really don’t want to have to sit in jail, but I will not implicate other people; it is out of the question.” The courthouse was full of family members and good friends. White-haired, elderly Judge Fox presided over the c o u r t session. M y father stepped up to the witness s t a n d and made a passionate appeal for my release. He had to answer all sorts of questions. The air in the courtroom was thick with tension.

The judge left the room for a few minutes, and when he came back, he said, “I really sympathize with this nice family, but I have decided that Chaim should stay behind bars and not be released on bail until the trial.” That was a bombshell. I swallowed hard, realizing that the difficulties I was facing would be even greater than I’d imagined. It was almost Pesach when I arrived back to prison and learned that matzos had been sent for the Jewish prisoners, along with grape juice and everything else needed for a Seder. That night, I celebrated zman cheiruseinu behind bars. It was the first of 14 sedarim that I would sing to myself in prison. On Chol Hamoed, a few special individuals came to visit me. May you never know what it means to be thrilled at the sight of a heimishe face. Speaking to someone who feels for you and sympathizes with you — the feeling is indescribable. I spent about eight months at that facility until the trial began. Every so often, I was awoken at four in the morning to take me to the courthouse for a status hearing.

Slowly, I became acquainted with the system. I saw someone eating something that I hadn’t seen in the jail kitchen, so I asked him where he had gotten hold of it. He told me, “It’s from the commissary.” When he saw my blank look, he explained to me how one needs to get money in his prison account — either by working in prison or by someone from the outside depositing money into the account — and then he can buy from the commissary whatever he’s missing: food, drinks, soap, or clothing. The maximum spending amount varies among facilities. In federal prisons, inmates are allowed to spend up to $290 a month. The Verdict From Lag BaOmer 5762/2002 on, I was taken to court every single day. My lawyer was Vincent Briccetti. The first proceedings ended in a mistrial. At the second trial, my entire future was doomed by the bang of the judge’s gavel. The word “guilty” echoed with grim finality through the courtroom. I was found guilty on fifteen out of thirtytwo charges. I saw my parents cover their faces with their hands. I just closed my eyes, hoping this was all one big,

bad dream and I would soon wake up. But it was no dream; it was a nightmarish reality. The question now was how long my sentence would be. It was on a very overcast day on June 25, 2003 when I was taken to the courthouse for sentencing. I felt an eerie sense of foreboding.

The word “guilty” echoed with grim finality through the courtroom. The judge sealed my fate that day. Twelve years and seven months in prison! You cannot imagine what it is like for a person to hear that he will lose so many years in the prime of his life. From where does one draw the strength not to break down completely upon hearing such a verdict? The feeling is too terrible to put to words. There was no time to even digest it. The moment the verdict was announced, I was surrounded and escorted out of the courtroom.

Yes, you guessed right, it depends on which kind! There is the good fat and the bad fat. Fat Phobia You see, not too long ago, people made no distinction between types of fats. The message was black and white – fat is unhealthy and fat makes you fat. Fat-Free Foods This fear of fat spawned an entire industry of fat-free foods such as cakes, cookies, ice cream, yogurt, and nearly every other food you can think of. We ate these fat-free foods without fear or guilt because we believed it was okay since the label said “FAT FREE!” A very strange thing happened despite the fact that dietary fat was decreased over the past two decades; the incidence of obesity and health problems continued to rise and it still hasn’t stopped. If collectively we all cut our fat from our diets, how can it be that we continued to get fatter and our health deteriorated? The Glaringly Obvious Answer “Fat-free” doesn’t mean sugarfree or calorie-free! What happened over the past two decades is that many people cut out the fat, and simply didn’t

realize that it was replaced with refined sugar. A food label can say “fat-free” and the food can be 100% sugar. Further, if you’re eating lots of sugar, as you learned in our article last week, you know what it turns into – fat in your body! Where did this fat come from? Ironically, from the fatfree food you just ate. Healthy Fats – Saturated, Polyunsaturated and Monounsaturated Fats It’s almost like magic when I suggest for people to add in some healthy fats. They not only start reducing their waistlines, but their energy

Other healthy fats are polyunsaturated and monounsaturated fats. These come mostly from vegetables and nuts such as walnuts, almonds, sunflower oil, and avocados. They can also be found in some types of fish. Both of these fats contain healthy essential fatty acids (EFA’s) such as omega-3 and omega-6. Additionally, these fats will help you reduce body fat as well as help you reduce bad cholesterol. Dangerous Fat – Trans Fat Oils are by nature extremely unstable substances that go rancid very quickly upon exposure to air and light. “Hydrogenation” and “partial hydrogenation” are practices that food manufacturers use to prolong the shelf life of their products such as margarine. Some call hydrogenated oils (i.e. trans fats) a manufacturer’s dream because they are a nearly unspoilable substance that lasts a long time. Trans fats are processed forms of

If you like baking yourself, get the margarine that has no trans fat or use coconut oil, palm oil, or olive oil. It might be more expensive, but your health is worth all the money!

There’s a give and take that surpasses currency; the only exchange needed is goodwill. I wish all of life ran this way, because with cigarettes, I’m all set. I was starved. I was always starved, but today the hunger felt like the hand of a thief, sneaking in, clawing. But I could take a puff, and the smoke would rush in and my lungs would fill up with warmth. At the entryway to the yeshivah, I stood, yearning to be part of this world. I could make it work. I could gain a few prutas working within the Torah walls, couldn’t I? So how could I squeeze the last few drops of earnings from the drying up reservoir of a yeshivah? Perhaps if I found a bochur from America to learn with together. One or two had started coming; you recognized them immediately by their larger eyes, polished shoes, and more than just the

regular clothes. Others in my situation took plane rides and settled into lodgings in foreign lands to access American wealth. Could I get some of that American wealth here by giving some attention and tutelage to the boys who traveled here to learn? I drew elaborately on my cigarette and walked through the doors. This one was American. It was clear. His facial hair wasn’t blonde, wasn’t red; it was a rust that only happens in certain climates. I sat down across from him. He looked up. I gave him my hand. “Shalom aleichem. How is it going?”

“Nothing like it.” I thought a moment, wondering how to extend the conversation before launching into my offer. “But the accommodations, how are they? Coming from America, you must be used to better.” “I’m not from America. I’m from Tzfas. An orphan, staying at my uncle’s.” “Oh,” I said. How could I have been so wrong? Not every weird-looking person was American. “So, how is it going?” “Baruch Hashem,” he said, pulling the Gemara closer to his chest and peering inside.

Malka’la within seven years. The boy stopped. I looked at him, his eyes were hurt. He wasn’t an American, on whom I could string false hopes in the belief that one day they would come true. Eighty lira; that’s the most I’d ever get. I’d be helping a boy who obviously needed it. But I couldn’t, because I didn’t have the attentiveness, the patience, which is all anyone ever needs to learn. So this wasn’t right for me. Or maybe it was. Together with Chaya’s new income, perhaps we would pay off the dirah within three years. But that meant borrowing. And by the end of three years, two more of our children would come of age and need a dirah. What had I done to myself? Didn’t I say this clearly, that I wasn’t doing a shidduch before knowing how I would pay for it? I couldn’t make the grade. It says that whoever takes on the yoke of Torah won’t have to serve under the yoke of governance. But not me. For the sake of my children’s lives, I had to sign out of the world of Torah. This wasn’t working. I was too hungry, I could hardly concentrate on the learning myself, and I hardly had it in me to extend my impoverished self to another human being. I could go back to Rachamim. Compared to this bochur, Yosef, who was throwing me wounded looks, it seemed exciting. Dragging boxes, and dropping

them at someone’s house; sighing, wiping my forehead, and flexing my arms; the

How could I tell her about my efforts to increase income when she was working hard on nourishing her dreams about the store? How could I tell her about kollel when we had managed to sidestep this disappointing subject over the last few days? I knew what I needed to do. It was becoming late, three thirty, when siesta hour was over and shutters rolled back up for business. If I was taking the job with Rachamim, I needed to show I was serious. I walked back to his building in the midday heat. The shimmering coos of doves in the sun assailed me as I walked. His was a building with a patch of landscape on both sides of his walkway. I took the stairs.

“Yes,” I said, afraid to let him talk, afraid to confront my wages. “I’m ready.” “Eat something before we go,” Rachamim said. He could intuit hunger, I realized, as if he was familiar, having experienced it himself. He smeared a pita thick with techina and threw on a couple of eggplant slices. I bit into the most heavenly, creamy sandwich I’d had in a long time, feeling like a traitor. My insides shuddered as they realigned themselves from starvation to satiation. What was my family eating? Shouldn’t I leave some over to share?

However, you can decide to be proactive and take matters into your own hands. I canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t think of a smarter way to indulge than to use summerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s sweet fruits to create fantastically refreshing and wholesome treats to enjoy on these long, hot summer days. Refreshing Fruit Salad

Pomegranate Compote

A flavorful medley of fresh fruit offers a delightful treat for any time!

An excellent indulgence to cool down with on a hot afternoon. Serve this compote on Shabbos or Yom Tov for a change from your regular compote. I especially love to serve it on Rosh Hashanah and Sukkos, since the pomegranate is one of the Shivas Haminim.

2 Cortland red apples, with peels, diced 1 yellow apple, with peels, diced 1 green apple, with peels, diced 2 oranges, peeled and diced 1 mango, peeled and diced 4 kiwis, peeled and diced 1 cup craisins ¼ cup orange juice 1 Tbsp. lemon juice 2 Tbsp. sugar Baker’s Choice hazelnut or almond nut crunch (or any sweetened nuts, chopped) Mix the orange juice, lemon juice and sugar, and toss it together with the sliced fruits and craisins. Top with nut crunch of your choice.

2 bags frozen strawberries, thawed 2 cans crushed pineapple 2 pomegranates, seeded 1/3 cup raspberry jello powder, dissolved in ¼ cup cold water 3 Tbsp. sugar Blend the strawberries. In a large bowl or container, mix together the blended strawberries, pineapple, sugar, and dissolved jello powder. Add the pomegranate seeds and mix again. Allow to sit in the fridge for an hour so that the red color settles over the compote.

(If you are in the mood of a pet, you can occasionally purchase baby chicks for $3.50 each.) Children are encouraged to pet and stroke the animals, to feed carrot tops to the rabbits, and crackers to the sheep and goats. If you would like to feed the animals, you may purchase animal crackers from the market- a dollar for four crackers, and bunches of carrots for the rabbits. PIXEL IN A POCKET Baby’s First Year

You don’t need elaborate backdrops or expensive lighting equipment to photograph your baby during the first year. A little creativity yields extravagant results. Shoot from the heart and let your intuition guide you. Some basics to consider: babies look best when photographed in soft, natural light. Use reflectors (a white sheet of paper, a small mirror, or kitchen foil) to get catchlights in their eyes or to fill in shadows. A plain painted wall or a piece of mat board from a frame shop work well enough as a backdrop. Always be on the lookout for interesting pieces to use as props. Just this morning, I came across a plank of wood left to the elements…it is going to make a captivating backdrop for somebody’s baby shoot. Although you may be feeling less than creative some days,

take advantage of as many moments as you can to grab your camera. A baby’s smile, her eyes, and the way she holds your finger, the chubby little toes… Here are some creative ways of documenting your baby’s first year in photographs: Pajama Party: Starting the first week of your baby’s life, photograph your little one in a pair of pajamas and do this monthly; same place, same pose, same pjs. This will make for some entertaining photos that show just how much your newborn grew during that first year. Start with a 6-month size pajama. The first half year the baby will be swimming in the photo, and by year’s end hopefully she will be filling it to the seams, or more so. Calendar Count: This is as much fun as it is easy. Buy one of those large desktop calendars and lay your baby down on the current month’s page (August, for those eager to get started today) with “I’m #__ Months” written on the date they turn that age. The poses will progress from a napping baby in January to his crawling prints walking off the page in December. Apples and Oranges: Another way of showing

your baby’s age is to place your baby next to a certain number of objects. For instance, a one-month old would be photographed propped next to one apple, while a 12-month old would be surrounded by a dozen fruits. What a beautiful collage this would make at year’s end. Keep it thematic by using fruits and vegetables, or entirely different items, such as wooden toys, floral species, etc. Chalk it Up: Chalk seems to be all the rage these days. (Check out the chalkboard aisle in Michael’s, you’ll love it!) The use of a chalkboard and an artistic hand make for some adorable monthly baby photos! Take a photo of your baby each month in front of a chalk board with the baby’s current age, stats, and fun facts written on the board. Chalk is forgiving, so if you don’t like what you see, erase and start again. Another chalk-inspired idea is making its strong mark in the business of baby photography. Lay the baby on a chalkboard, and let his natural position determine the pose. At age 3 months he will likely lie with his hands outstretched and his face turned upward. Draw an umbrella near his upturned

hand and chalk in raindrops above his head. Try drawing a different scene every month of his first year. Can’t think of anything to draw? Maybe try using words instead of drawings. Your baby’s adorableness will do most of the work. Month-by-Month Comparison Photos: Choose a blanket and cozy corner to photograph your baby on the first of each month. Lay a stuffed animal, a baby giraffe for example, beside the baby to gauge baby’s size by comparison. You will wonder whether the stuffed animal is shrinking, because the difference in size between months 1 and 12 are that huge! Cards 365: Photograph your baby often and scribble a loving message on the printed image. Sample card message: Day #24- “Today was good, today was fun. Tomorrow is another one.” This is one project that can be so beautifully done. The message can be a loving thought or quote. Each individual photo will be amazing in itself, but the project as a whole is remarkable. Picture how much a daughter will

appreciate having all these photos and letters to enjoy when she’s older. After photographing your way through the first 12 months, here is a perfect way to celebrate the first year> The Cake Smash. 1st Birthday: Cake Smash Smash the cake is news to all… new to some, and old news to others. What is a cake smash? It is an event to celebrate your baby’s first year by giving her a first taste of birthday cake, with a photographer capturing the every detail and expression. Much of the cake gets squished and squashed and not much gets eaten, but that’s exactly the point. Some probably think this is silly, and perhaps it is, but it’s also adorable and creates lasting memories you will always love. Here’s what you will need for this: - Backdrop. A good choice is seamless paper. For $25 you can purchase a roll that is 52”wide and 107” long. There are endless color choices, one for every taste. Bold and bright colors should be paired with neutral colored-clothing, and vice versa. For a very simple budget, you could

even use a bedsheet for the backdrop. Walmart sells such sheets for $7. Both can be taped to your wall if you have nothing to hang the backdrop from. - Decorations. Hang a pennant banner made out of scrapbook paper and ribbon. Use coordinating colors to match the baby’s outfit. A fun element to add is a bouquet of balloons. Hanging tendrils of ribbon is an eyecatching effect as well. - Plexiglass. This is useful for keeping the surface flat and wrinkle-free. Plus, the reflection adds a touch of sleek professionalism. Plexi is available in sheets sized 4’x3’ at Lowes and Home Depot for approximately $30. - Good Lighting. It is always preferable to use natural light versus a camera flash. Try to set up the cake and backdrop near a big glass sliding door or beside large windows. If outdoor light is not available, professional lighting is going to make all the difference. And finally - A Cake! A professionally baked cake will much enhance the cake smashing event. Order a 6” cake. The more colorful and unusual the coloring, the better.

Capture the cake alone in front of your backdrop before you bring the baby in. Also try to have a back up cake in case something goes awry. The cake should be at room temperature so that it will crumble easily when baby takes his first bite. Get down low on the floor and start capturing the action…. Baby eyes the cake hungrily and perhaps warily…moves toward the creamy center and digs in….fingers and toes soon covered in cake crumbs… and somewhere in that glorious mess is a smile to be …. Captured. Note: A cupcake can work just as well as a cake, if you are concerned that the cake will go to waste after the session.

Esther

Esther is a fictional story based on real people and real events. Esther grew up in the Hungarian village, Selisht, surrounded by her loving family. Esther’s spirit, wit, and unending generosity, combined with the boundless love she received from her parents and grandparents stand her in good stead in this summer story. Although this story takes place in 1933, when life in the European shtetel was still peaceful, these same attributes helped her overcome the terrible trials she faced years later during the war. The author, a granddaughter of Esther, is grateful every day for the deep love she was blessed to receive from her Babby Esther, and is doing all she can to continue her kindness.

Chapter 4 In Trouble Recap: Esther, together with the Mima Feige’s chicken she was meant to bring to the shochet, goes to the main street to hear the town crier’s announcement. The chicken escapes.

The village children were hot on the chase of Esther’s runaway chicken. They whooped and laughed each time they nearly caught hold of its wings. They were having fun. Esther, however, was so scared of Mima Faige that it was no fun for her at all. As the chicken headed toward the lake, Esther grew

Esther’s Family Zaidy: Zaidy Chaim cares deeply about his family, and takes great pride in providing for them. He is an honest laborer who works hard to make a living in the poor Hungarian village, Selisht. Zaidy is considered a rich man because he owns a cow and a field. However, the field is owned by several partners who can never agree on selling the property, so Zeidy’s wealth is of no practical use. Babby: Babby Malka is a queen. She grew up in the city and appreciates beauty and elegance. Babby knows nothing of milking cows, growing vegetables or whitewashing blackened walls, which are the basics of a woman’s chores in the village. However, Babby Malka knows how to embroider the most exquisite tablecloths and knit the finest silk socks. Babby’s home is always impeccably clean.

Tatashe: Tatashe is a serious Talmid Chachum, who spends his entire day and a big part of the night studying Torah. Zaidy Chaim and Babby Malka are very proud of their fine learned son-inlaw who is a true credit to the family. Esther loves Tatashe dearly. She enjoys listening to his Torah learning, and wouldn’t think of ever interrupting him. Mamashe: Mamashe is gentle and kind. She treats Tatashe, Zaidy, and Babby with boundless respect, as she works side by side with Babby to keep the household running smoothly. Having grown up in Babby’s care, Mamashe is the perfect combination of a city and village girl. She embroiders, knits, and sews clothing that is unsurpassed in elegance and style, and yet she has no fear of the cow, which she cares for with the same gentleness as she cares for her children.

Esther: The oldest of three children, Esther is surrounded by the love of her dear grandparents and parents. At age 10, Esther is a free-spirited girl who is fun loving and daring and has a heart as boundless as the village fields. Yet for all her spirit, Esther is always respectful to her elders, for that is how she was brought up. Mutche: Mutche is a good natured seven-year-old child. He spends plenty of time tagging along with Esther, whom he adores. Esther loves him too, which is why he is always welcome to join in her play. The rest of the time, he sits on a tall stool right near Tatashe who is teaching Mutche the Siddur. Ruchele: The baby Ruchele is at the center of all the activity at home. At age two, she gets into everyone’s way, except when the door is left ajar and she makes her escape. The noise of the chickens and the mooing of the cow alerts Mamashe to go search for Ruchele once again.

Esther, ahead of the rest of the children, ran onto the small wooden bridge that spanned the lake. Suddenly, she lost her footing and slid into the murky water. She came out spluttering and wet with long slimy reeds hanging from her hair. Still, she had no time to worry about her sorry state as she frantically looked around for the chicken. To her utter dismay, the chicken was now so far out in the lake, she could not hope to follow it there. She knew that chickens couldn’t swim very well. She also knew that as soon as the gypsies, who lived on the other side of the lake, spotted the chicken, they would row out on one of their little boats, catch it, and eat it. Then they would sing and dance happily all night for the pleasures of a good meal. They would not think about a little girl who was in deep, deep trouble with

her fearful aunt. They would not worry about Mima Faige and her Shabbos meal. They would simply rejoice in the simple pleasure of filling their hungry stomachs. Esther’s stomach hurt.

She’d be a lot less noticeable there, than in the bed she shared with Mutche in the big room. Esther snuggled her face deep into Tatashe’s pillow; it smelled of Tatashe. For the first time that day she breathed deeply. In Tatashe’s bed she was safe.

From under Tateshe’s heavy quilt, Esther could no longer hear what Mima Faige was saying, though she could hear her shrill voice overpowering Babby’s and Mamashe’s soft voices. After a long time, Esther heard the door to the house bang shut, and she knew that Mima Faige left the house and that she was angry. Eventually, Esther saw that Mamashe was not coming into the bedroom to speak to her, and she finally started breathing again. She lay still for a very long time until she finally fell into a deep sleep. She did not feel anything at all when Tatashe came home later that night and gently carried her to her own bed in the big room. IS THIS FINALLY IT? DEBRIS FROM A BOEING 777 FOUND, LIKELY FROM MISSING MALAYSIA FLIGHT MH370 Officials were “increasingly confident” that debris from a Boeing 777 that washed up on Reunion Island, an island in the Southern Indian Ocean, is from the doomed Malaysian flight MH370 which disappeared off the radar on March 8th 2014 with 239 people on board. Since the first discovery of a flaperon, a part of the wing that helps control an airplane’s speed last week , investigators have found what looked like a part of a luggage, as well as a piece of metal that is considered “an object of interest.” The debris has been sent to France to be further analyzed. They hope to confirm that it in fact originated from MH370, as well as how long it had been in the water. The search for MH370 had centered on the Southern Indian Ocean almost from the start, but investigators

THE FHA 203K LOAN: THE SECRET TO AFFORDING A HOME THAT NEEDS RENOVATIONS by Ann Zeilingold When looking for a home, it’s sometimes hard to find the right home, in the right neighborhood and also in the condition that you want to live in. There are homes that are “move-in” or “cream puffs,” but even those homes may need some modification. What happens when you are looking for a home, and you are on a limited budget and a house comes up, but it needs work? This scenario happens often. The clients are ready to move forward, but after paying for the down payment and closing costs they don’t have the extra money to fix up the house. Also, sometimes the best deals are on the homes that need some TLC. Naomi Streicher, broker owner of Realty Teams, has said often, ”A home that smells, just doesn’t sell.” Hedva Dahan, broker associate at Realty Teams, adds, “A home that needs work, even cosmetic work or deferred maintenance, will not sell as quickly or for the same price as another home

that shows better and is maintained.” A family looking to purchase, especially a firsttime home buyer, doesn’t have the resources in most cases for the basic painting, scraping of the floors, let alone possible window and roof replacement. There is a mortgage product which is not used as often as it should. It’s the FHA 203K Loan. This is a loan designed to provide funds for renovations. The minimum renovation cost is $5,000 all the way up to $625,500. This loan offers tremendous flexibility, and it gives the client the funds over the purchase price if needed to fix up a home being purchased. Ricky G. closed on her home in Pomona. She had a minimum down payment (3.5%) and she didn’t even have the money for the closing costs. We were able to structure a purchase for her where the seller paid $20,000 towards her closing costs, and we gave her $30,000 to do repairs. Ricky bought her home with less than $25,000 in total and today, after

completing the renovations of her home, which primarily were of cosmetic nature, she lives in a beautiful home. This loan product involves the underwriter reviewing the work to be completed and the appraiser assessing the value currently and after completion of the renovations. By doing this type of assessment, the bank actually gives a mortgage to the client based on the after improved value; usually this loan is larger than the purchase price. After closing, as the work is completed, the bank releases the renovation funds as needed to the contractor and homeowner, thus allowing for the repairs to be completed post-closing with checks and balances on the cost and scope of the renovation. This loan works well for someone buying a home that needs an addition, someone buying a home that needs just general cosmetic work like painting and scraping, and even possibly a home that needs a new kitchen

their home in a traditional refinance or HELOC (Home Equity Line Of Credit) because the value of the home may be too low. Because this loan uses an after-improved value to base the financing amount, it is a great loan for any minor or major renovations or additions.

In conclusion, this rehab mortgage loan is a great loan for a purchaser or for a refinance. Although it has its pros and cons, like any other loan or decision on how or if to finance renovations, it is an option that begs to be explored more deeply.

From the beginning of our lives we are taught to be suspicious. Don’t trust a stranger. Never tell someone that Mommy is not home. When someone is kind to you, you tell yourself that you must be his charity case. We’re constantly suspecting people to want to hurt us, or at least not to want what’s best for us.

In the early days, before the industrial explosion, consumers bought directly from a person; the meat from Herschel, the fish from Earl, the shoes from Shlomo. Shimon was their water carrier, Harvey the tailor. Their providers lived within a short distance of their home. They probably schmoozed in shul over schnapps, met in the park, and shared in each other’s simchas. At the end of the day they were good friends. Buying directly from the person they were acquainted with, they knew they can trust one another to provide them with best quality and prices.

There are two ways to build trust. Time or Honesty

It takes us humans a long time to build solid relationships. It takes us a long time and a lot of consistency to turn our natural suspicion into trust. The foundation of every relationship is trust. Can I trust you to respect me? Can I trust you to look out for me? Can I trust you to continue this relationship even if you know my flaws? It’s all about trust. Not surprisingly, trust is also the binding factor between any consumer-provider relationship. Can I trust that your price is correct? Can I trust that you’re selling me a product that you believe in? Can I trust you that you will not misinform me?

But as the economy changed, the owners of stores and businesses slowly withdrew to the comfort of their offices, their face being replaced by operating officers and then managers, represented by salesmen and customer service employees. Now when you walk inside, you’re shopping from nobody and you are a nobody. You don’t trust.

Rabbi Mates Friesel a”h, Niftar at Age 91.

newly formed Village of New Square. To his fellow residents he was a person to turn to when in need of assistance, be it of a personal or legal nature. Rabbi Friesel saw his primary role as one of doing chesed for others.

This past Shabbos, the New Square community lost one of its founders and its longtime mayor with the petirah of Reb Mates Friesel, a”h. The levaya was held late Motzaei Shabbos. The aron was carried from the main Beis Medrash in New Square to the Beis Hachayim at the edge of the village. The niftar was 91 years old and enjoyed the rare merit of seeing four generations of descendants continue in his ways. In addition to being counted among the original settlers in what then was an isolated outpost, Rabbi Friesel also served as the village’s only mayor since its incorporation in 1961. Rabbi Friesel was born in the town of Tsanz, Poland in 1924. He was a teenager at the time of the Nazi takeover, and he suffered through the worst of the Holocaust. After arriving in America, he became a chassid of the late Skvere Rebbe, Grand Rabbi Yakov Yosef Twersky, who founded the New Square community. Rabbi Friesel supported his family through a travel agency he owned in Manhattan, while accepting the position of mayor of the

The village was often embattled by hostile elements in the surrounding communities during its early years. Rabbi Friesel’s steady and calm leadership, under the constant guidance of the Skvere Rebbe, helped the village pull through many difficulties. Along the way, Rabbi Friesel earned the respect and friendship of the many politicians with whom he came in contact. The mayorship remained in Friesel’s hands right up to his passing, for a nearly unmatched 52 years. This was chiefly because he ran unopposed in every election. In recent years the mayor’s increasing infirmity led to most of his official duties being taking over by the deputy mayor, Reb Yisroel Spitzer. Rabbi Spitzer describes his relationship with Rabbi Friesel as a warm one. Rockland Emergency Services Coordinator Gordon

Wren Jr., who often dealt with Rabbi Friesel in the course of his work, cited one meeting Rabbi Friesel had with President Jimmy Carter on his presidential airplane as proof of Rabbi Friesel’s influence. Wren commented, “That showed how much political reach he had as mayor of the community to meet with the president of the United States. He rarely spoke publicly. He was a pioneer of the village.” Last week, Spitzer visited Rabbi Friesel in the hospital to bid him a final farewell. He said of him, “He was my mentor. As much as I learned from him, I didn’t learn enough. He gave me a very thoughtful farewell and all types of blessings.” He also described Rabbi Friesel as a “humble person who put the community and individuals first.” Reb Shlomo Koenig, trustee of Kaser Village, said of Rabbi Friesel, “He was a nice man and he had a way of talking to people. He accomplished things in a positive manner, not for himself but to help build his community.” Rabbi Friesel leaves behind a large family with four generations that have all followed in his footsteps. His sons and grandsons count among them several Dayanim and numerous leading Mechanchim in the United States, Europe and Eretz Yisroel. His warm guidance will be sorely missed. ‫נעמענדיג דעם פעדער אין האנט‪ ,‬און וועלנדיג שרייבן איבער אזא‬ ‫חשוב'ער מקום קדוש ווי 'קהל שערי תפילה‪ ,‬כאפט אן א פחד און אימה‪.‬‬ ‫עס איז די רעדע פון איינע פון די חשוב'סטע בתי‪-‬מדרשים אין שטאט‬ ‫און מעגליך אין גאנץ ניו‪-‬יארק‪ ,‬אן ארט וואס טויזנטע אידן קוקן ארויף‬ ‫דערויף‪ .‬ווער ווייסט צי מיר זענען ביכולת דאס רעכט צו באשרייבן און‬ ‫אראפלייגן פאר א ציבור אידן?! ווער ווייסט צי מיר מעגן דאס בכלל‬ ‫באשרייבן‪ ,‬צי מיר וועלן קענען אראפלייגן א אביאקטיוון בילד פארן‬ ‫ליינער און דאס אהערשטעלן אזוי ווי עס פאסט פאר אזא מקום קדוש‪,‬‬ ‫ווי עס שטעלט פאר מיט זיך 'קהל שערי תפילה'‪.‬‬ ‫אז מיר ווילן שרייבן איבער אזא בית‪-‬המדרש ווי קהל שערי‬ ‫תפילה‪ ,‬ווייסן מיר נישט וואו אנצוהויבן‪ :‬זאלן מיר שרייבן איבער דעם‬ ‫אויסערליכער שיינקייט פון דעם מקום קדוש‪ ,‬דער שוהל וואס טראגט‬ ‫דעם טיטל פון "שענסטער בית‪-‬המדרש אין מאנסי"; זאלן מיר ענדערש‬ ‫אראפלייגן די ערנסטקייט וואס עס הערשט ביים דאווענען‪ ,‬וואו עס‬

‫איז נישט פאראן קיין שמועסן אדער סעלפאנס‪ ,‬נאר בלויז ערנסטקייט‬ ‫כראוי לבית קדוש כזו; אדער אפשר זאלן מיר זיך באציען צו די שיעורי‬ ‫תורה וואס ציען צו זיך שווערע הונדערטע מענטשן‪ ,‬הרוויים נפשם‬ ‫הצמאה לדבר השם‪ ,‬ומשם תצא תורה לישראל; מעגליך אז עס וואלט‬ ‫געווען א סברה זיך צו באציען אויף די קוואליטעט פון די מתפללים אין‬ ‫שוהל‪ ,‬די ערנסטע אידן וואס שטרעבן צו לעבן א העכערע סארט לעבן‪,‬‬ ‫מער אויסגעטאן פון דער גשמיות'דיגער גאס‪.‬‬ ‫הצד‪-‬השוה שבהם‪ ,‬אז מיר רעדן אצינד פון א בית‪-‬המדרש וואס איז א‬ ‫מיוחדת במינה‪ ,‬אן ארט וואו א דאווענען איז א דאווענען‪ ,‬א תורה שיעור‬ ‫איז כולה תורה‪ ,‬אן ערנסטער ארט במלוא המובן‪ .‬עס איז די רעדע פון‬ ‫א בית‪-‬המדרש וואס איז נישט געגרינדעט געווארן פאר סעודה'לעך און‬ ‫קופקעלעך‪ ,‬נאר א בית‪-‬להשם וואס דינט דעם צוועק פון א בית תורה‬ ‫ותפילה‪ ,‬אזוי ווי א מקום קדוש דארף זיך צו פירן‪ .‬עס לאזט זיך זאגן אויף‬ ‫דעם ארט 'אין זה כי אם בית אלקים‪ ,‬וזה 'שער' השמים'‪.‬‬ ‫אז מיר נעמען זיך שרייבן די היסטאריע פון דעם בית‪-‬המדרש‪,‬‬ ‫שיעורי תורה‬

‫די היסטאריע פון דעם שוהל איז אן אינטערעסאנטער‪ ,‬זי האט‬ ‫זיך געבויעט צוביסלעך און שטאפלווייז‪ ,‬ביז זי איז צוגעקומען צו איר‬ ‫יעצטיגן ערהאבענעם שטאפל‪ ,‬זייענדיג א מוסטער און דוגמא ווי אזוי‬ ‫א מקום קדוש און א בית‪-‬השם דארף אויסצוקוקן‪.‬‬ ‫אין יאר תשנ"ג לפ"ק‪ ,‬איז געווען א בית‪-‬המדרש אויף וואלנבערג‬ ‫קארט‪ ,‬אין שטוב פון מו"ה ר' שמשון‬ ‫האלפרין הי"ו‪ ,‬וואס האט געדינט די שכנים‬ ‫און די סביבה פונעם שוהל‪ .‬די מתפללים‬ ‫האבן דעמאלס געזוכט א רב וואס זאל דינען‬ ‫אין דעם בית‪-‬המדרש‪ ,‬און עס איז דעמאלס‬ ‫אויפגענומען געווארן אלס רב‪ ,‬הרה"ג ר'‬ ‫ישראל דוד שלעזינגער שליט"א‪.‬‬ ‫אין דער זעלבער צייט‪ ,‬איז געווען א‬ ‫קביעות'דיגער שיעור אין מסכת שבת‪ ,‬וואס‬ ‫איז פארגעקומען אין בית‪-‬המדרש מקור‬ ‫חיים דורך דער ארטיגער רב ‪ -‬הרה"ג ר'‬ ‫יחזקאל דייטש הי"ו‪ .‬עס האט זיך געמאכט‬ ‫א תקופה‪ ,‬וואס דער רב האט נישט געקענט‬ ‫פארלערנען זיין קביעות'דיגער שיעור און‬ ‫די קהילה האט דעמאלס געזוכט א שטעל‪-‬‬ ‫פארטרעטער וואס זאל איבערנעמען‬ ‫דעם שיעור פונעם רב‪ .‬מען האט דעמאלס‬ ‫געפינען הרה"ג ר' ישראל דוד שליט"א און‬ ‫אים פארבעטן אז ער זאל ממשיך זיין מיטן‬ ‫שיעור און פארלערנען במקום דעם רב‬ ‫שליט"א‪.‬‬ ‫גאנץ שנעל האבן די משתתפי השיעור געזען אז זייער מגיד‪-‬שיעור‬ ‫איז א מעיין המתגבר און א מפליא לעשות‪ ,‬די משתתפי השיעור זענען‬ ‫כסדר געוואקסן אין צאל און דער נאמען איז ארויס אויפן גאס אלס‬ ‫זעלטענער מגיד‪-‬שיעור ודרשן מפורסם‪.‬‬ ‫עס האט נישט גענומען לאנג און עס האט זיך אנטוויקלט א חבורה‬ ‫פון ערנסטע יונגעלייט‪ ,‬וואס האבן געוואלט הערן שיעורים און לערנען‬ ‫פונעם רב שליט"א און זענען געווען גרייט צו פאלגן דעם רב על כל דבר‬ ‫גדול וקטן‪.‬‬ ‫אין יענע תקופה האט זיך געגרינדעט דער בית‪-‬המדרש שערי תפילה‪,‬‬ ‫בראשות דער רב שליט"א וועלכער איז געשטאנען אין שפיץ‪ .‬מען האט‬ ‫זיך דעמאלס גענומען צו די ארבעט פון בויען א נייעם בנין פארן שוהל‪,‬‬ ‫קהל שערי תפילה‪.‬‬

‫הייוויו קארנער מעיפל עוועניו‪ .‬דארט האט מען זיך צוזאמענגענומען‬ ‫אינאיינעם מיטן רב‪ ,‬און געגרינדעט דעם בית‪-‬המדרש פאר די ערשטע‬ ‫תקופה‪ ,‬ביז מען וועט געפינען א באקוועמערע ארט צו דאווענען‪.‬‬ ‫עטליכע וואכן האט מען געדאוונט אין שטוב פון ר' ברוך‪ .‬דער פלאן‬ ‫איז געווען אז מען וועט אריבערגיין דאווענען אין שטוב פון מו"ה‬ ‫ר' שרגא ניוהאוז ע"ה‪ ,‬אבער דער פלאן איז שיער צונישט געווארן‪,‬‬ ‫הערנדיג די ביטערע בשורה אז ר' שרגא האט פלוצלינג געכאפט א‬ ‫הארץ‪-‬אטאקע און ליידער צוריקגעגעבן זיין נשמה ליוצרה‪ .‬מען האט‬ ‫שוין געוואלט מאכן פרישע פלענער איבער א מקום תפילה‪ ,‬אבער די‬ ‫אלמנה פון ר' שרגא האט זיך איינגע'עקשנ'ט אז עס איז געווען דער‬ ‫רצון פון איר מאן ע"ה אז מען זאל דוקא דארט דאווענען‪ .‬קהל שערי‬ ‫תפילה האט זיך דעמאלס אריבערגעצויגן אויף צייטוויליג אין שטוב‬ ‫פון ר' שרגא ע"ה‪ ,‬ביז דער נייער בנין וועט‬ ‫אויפגעשטעלט ווערן על מכונו‪.‬‬ ‫מיטן גרינדונג פון דער נייער בית‪-‬המדרש‪,‬‬ ‫איז נתיסד געווארן עטליכע פרישע שיעורים‬ ‫דורך דער רב שליט"א‪ .‬מען האט דעמאלס‬ ‫אנגעהויבן דער באקאנטער שיעור אין נ"ך‪,‬‬ ‫וואס האלט אן ביזן היינטיגן טאג און ציעט‬ ‫הונדערטע אידן וואס קומען מיטהאלטן די‬ ‫שיעורים‪ .‬דער שיעור ווערט געזאגט אין די‬ ‫ווינטערדיגע מוצאי שבתים צווישן אכט און‬ ‫ניין אזייגער ביינאכט‪.‬‬ ‫אין יענע צייט איז געגרינדעט געווארן‬ ‫א נייער שיעור אין ספר המבי"ט פון רבי‬ ‫משה מטראני‪ .‬ווען דער ציבור האט זיך‬ ‫פארגרעסערט‪ ,‬האט מען אנגעהויבן צו‬ ‫לערנען חומש ורש"י‪.‬‬ ‫אויך איז צוגעלייגט געווארן דעמאלס‬ ‫דער שיעור אין פרקי אבות‪ ,‬וואס ווערט‬ ‫פארגעלערנט יעדע שבת נאכמיטאג‪.‬‬ ‫וויבאלד דער נייער צייטווייליגער בית‪-‬‬ ‫המדרש האט נישט געהאט גענוג פלאץ און‬ ‫איז נישט געווען אויסגעשטאט צו אקאמעדירן אזא גרויסער ציבור‬ ‫וואס זענען געקומען מיטהאלטן די שיעורים‪ ,‬האט מען פארגעלערנט‬ ‫די שיעורים אין בית‪-‬המדרש בית‪-‬תפילה‪ ,‬וואו עס איז געווען א פולער‬ ‫בית‪-‬המדרש פון אידן‪ ,‬מיטצוהאלטן די שיעורים‪.‬‬ ‫עטליכע יאר דערנאך‪ ,‬האט די אלמנה פון מו"ה ר' שרגא ניוהאוז ע"ה‬ ‫פארקויפט איר הויז‪ .‬דעמאלס איז מען אריבערגעגאנגען דאווענען‬ ‫אין שטוב פון מו"ה ר' דוב גליק ע"ה‪ ,‬וואו דער בית‪-‬המדרש האט זיך‬ ‫אויפגעהאלטן פאר עטליכע יאר‪.‬‬

‫דערווייל וואס מען האט זיך גענומען צו די עבודת הבניה פון דעם‬ ‫נייעם בית‪-‬המדרש‪ ,‬האט מען זיך פריוואזאריש איינקוואטירט אין‬ ‫שטוב פון מו"ה ר' ברוך קאהן הי"ו‪ ,‬וועלכער האט געוואוינט אויף‬

‫בנין בית אלקנו‬

‫אז מען וויל זיך נעמען בויען אז הייליגער מקום ווי עס איז 'קהל שערי‬ ‫תפילה'‪ ,‬גייט דאס נישט צו סתם אזוי‪ .‬עס קומט מיט א הכנה דרבה‪ ,‬מיט‬ ‫א דחילו ורחימו און א דקדוק אויף יעדער פרט אז עס ווערט געבויט‬ ‫אויסגעהאלטן להלכה‪.‬‬ ‫דאס געבוי פון דעם נייעם בית‪-‬המדרש האט פארנומען א וויכטיגער‬ ‫ארט צווישן די מתפללים‪ .‬שוין גאנץ אנהויב איז נקבע געווארן א שיעור‬ ‫צווישן די מתפללים‪ ,‬דורך דער רב שליט"א‪ ,‬וואו מען האט געלערנט‬

‫הלכות בית‪-‬הכנסת‪ .‬דער שיעור איז איינגעפירט געווארן שבת‬ ‫אינדערפרי פארן דאווענען‪ ,‬און בשעת'ן שיעור האט מען אויפגעוויזן ווי‬ ‫אזוי יעדע קלייניגקייט איז געבויט געווארן לפי הלכה‪ ,‬אזוי ווי עס ווערט‬ ‫געברענגט אין שלחן ערוך‪.‬‬ ‫אז איר גייט אריין אינעם בנין פון 'קהל שערי תפילה'‪ ,‬וועט איר‬ ‫באמערקן אז איידערן אריינגיין אין דער פראכטיגער היכל התפילה‪,‬‬ ‫דארף מען צום ערשט דורכגיין א קליינעם צימערל וואו מען וואשט זיך‬ ‫די הענט און הערשט דערנאך גייט מען אריין אין גרויסן בית‪-‬המדרש‪.‬‬ ‫דאס איז ספעציעל געבויט געווארן לפי הלכה‪ ,‬וויבאלד לויט די גמרא‬ ‫דארף מען אריינגיין 'שיעור שני פתחים'‪ ,‬וואס לויט טייל דעות דארף‬ ‫מען פאקטיש דורכגיין צוויי טירן‪ .‬דאס איז די סיבה פארוואס דער בית‪-‬‬ ‫המדרש איז געבויט געווארן אויף דעם אופן‪.‬‬ ‫נאך א דוגמא‪ :‬פון אנהויב איז געווען אן אנדערן פלאן אויפן בית‪-‬‬ ‫המדרש‪ ,‬אבער לויט יענעם פלאן וואלט מען אריינגעקומען אינעם‬ ‫שוהל פון די אנדערע זייט‪ ,‬אזוי אז צום ארון קודש וואלט מען זיך‬ ‫געמוזט ווענדן אויף די לינקע זייט‪ .‬די פלענער זענען געטוישט געווארן‪,‬‬ ‫צוליב דער כלל פון 'כל פינות שאתה פונה לא יהא אלא לימין' – מען זאל‬ ‫זיך שטענדיג ווענדן צו די רעכטע זייט‪ .‬דעריבער האט מען געטוישט די‬ ‫פלענער פארן בית‪-‬המדרש‪ ,‬אויסשטעלנדיג אז מען זאל אריינקומען צו‬ ‫די לינקע זייט פון ארון‪-‬קודש‪ ,‬אזוי אז צוצוקומען צום ארון‪-‬קודש זאל‬ ‫מען זיך ווענדן אויף די רעכטע זייט‪.‬‬ ‫אזוי האט מען אויסגעשטעלט יעדער פרט פון דעם בית‪-‬המדרש‪,‬‬ ‫זיכער מאכנדיג אז עס שטומט מיט די הלכה‪.‬‬

‫כבוד בית השם‬

‫דער נייער שוהל איז געבויט געווארן אין א צייט אפשניט פון זיבן‬ ‫יאר‪ .‬פיל מחשבה‪ ,‬געלט און צייט איז אריינגעלייגט געווארן אין דער‬ ‫מקום קדוש‪ ,‬מאכנדיג זיכער אז עס זאל ארויסקומען בתכלית היופי‬ ‫אזוי ווי עס פאסט‪ .‬מען האט נישט געזשאלעוועט קיין געלט און זיכער‬ ‫געמאכט אז דער שוהל ווערט געבויעט מיט דער גרעסטער מאס הידור‬ ‫און שיינקייט וואס עס איז נאר שייך‪.‬‬ ‫אבער אויך נאך א זאך!‬ ‫דער בית‪-‬המדרש איז געבויט געווארן בהידור רב אויך אין רוחניות‪,‬‬ ‫מאכנדיג זיכער אז עס זאל זיין לשמחת לבם פון די שכנים ארום‪ ,‬עס‬ ‫זאל קיינעם נישט שטערן דער פאקט איבער דער בית‪-‬המדרש‪ .‬א‬ ‫גרויסער דגש איז אוועקגעלייגט געווארן דערויף‪ ,‬זיכער צו מאכן צו‬ ‫האבן גוטע באציאונגען מיט די שכנים ארום‪ .‬עס לאזט זיך זאגן אז‬ ‫עס האט זיך אויסגעצאלט; די באציאונגען מיט די ארומיגע שכנים איז‬ ‫אויסערגעווענליך פיין‪.‬‬ ‫ווען דער רב האט געהערט‪ ,‬ביים אנהויבן בויען‪ ,‬אז עס זענען‬ ‫פאראן שכנים וואס זענען באזארגט אז דער נייער בית‪-‬המדרש וועט‬ ‫ברענגען א מאנגל אין פארקינג‪ ,‬האט ער ספעציעל געלאזט אפקויפן א‬ ‫דערנעבנדיגער לאט‪ ,‬כדי עס זאל זיין בריווח פלאץ צו פארקן‪ ,‬און עס‬ ‫זאל נישט זיין קיין שטער פאר די שכנים‪.‬‬ ‫דאס זעלבע האט פאסירט‪ ,‬ווען עס איז געווען א טענה מצד די‬ ‫שכנים‪ ,‬אז דער נייער שוהל וועט צושטערן דאס שיינקייט פונעם געגנט‪,‬‬ ‫וויבאלד דער לאט ארום וועט נישט זיין געהעריג נאכגעקוקט‪ ,‬האט דער‬ ‫רב באפוילן אז נאך איידער מען הויבט אן צו בויען דעם שוהל‪ ,‬זאל מען‬ ‫מסדר זיין די לענסקעיפינג‪ ,‬די גראז זאל זיין שיין געמאכט‪ .‬דאס אלעס‬ ‫כדאי די שכנים זאלן זען אז אין דעם נייעם שוהל וועט מען אכטונג געבן‬

‫אויך אויף די דרויסנדיגע שיינקייט‪ ,‬אז די שכנים זאלן זיין צופרידן און זיך‬ ‫נישט שפירן באקריוועדעט‪.‬‬ ‫עס איז וויכטיג צו באמערקן‪ ,‬אז דער רב איז שטארק מקפיד נישט‬ ‫צו שטערן קיינעם מיט זיין אנוועזנהייט‪ .‬דער שיעור פרקי‪-‬אבות דורכ'ן‬ ‫רב שליט"א‪ ,‬ווערט פארגעלערנט יעדן שבת נאכמיטאג צווישן ‪ 5:30‬און‬ ‫‪ 6:30‬נאכמיטאג‪ ,‬דער דאזיגער צייט איז מעגליך אויסגערעכנט אז עס‬ ‫זאל נישט אויסקומען אין א צייט וואס אן אנדערער רב אין די גלילות‬ ‫לערנט פאר‪ ,‬און נישט צו נאנט צו מנחה‪ ,‬אז עס זאל נישט אויסקוקן‬ ‫כאילו עס שלעפט אוועק מתפללים פון אנדערע בתי‪-‬מדרשים‪ ,‬אלעס‬ ‫כדאי אז אנדערע מענטשן זאלן זיך נישט שפירן געטראפן דערפון‪.‬‬ ‫גדול כבוד הבריות!‬

‫בשעת'ן בויען דעם בית‪-‬המדרש‪ ,‬האט מען קיין געלט נישט‬ ‫געשפארט‪ .‬וואס אימער מען האט געקענט אריינלייגן אין דעם בנין‪ ,‬צו‬ ‫מאכן שענער דאס בית‪-‬המדרש‪ ,‬האט מען דארט אריינגעלייגט‪ .‬דער‬ ‫תכלית דערפן איז געווען‪ ,‬זיכער צו מאכן אז דער בית‪-‬השם ווערט‬ ‫געבויעט מיט א הידור און שיינקייט‪ ,‬אזוי ווי עס פאסט פארן הויז פון‬ ‫באשעפער‪.‬‬ ‫און עס האט זיך טאקע אויסגעצאלט‪ .‬דער בית‪-‬המדרש איז‬ ‫געבויעט געווארן א כלילת היופי אויף א הערליכער פארנעם‪ .‬דאס אז‬ ‫דער בית‪-‬המדרש איז דער שענסטער שוהל אין מאנסי‪ ,‬איז אויסער‬ ‫יעדער פראגע‪-‬צייכן‪ ,‬עס איז אבער מעגליך אז עס האנדלט זיך פון‬ ‫דער שענסטער בית‪-‬המדרש אין גאנץ ניו‪-‬יארק‪ ,‬צוליב דעם וואס מען‬ ‫האט קיין געלט נישט געשפארט און זיך געלאזט קאסטן דערפאר כל‬ ‫הון דעלמא‪ ,‬אבי עס זאל זיך אהערשטעלן א שיינעם מקום קדוש פארן‬ ‫באשעפער‪.‬‬ ‫ווען מענטשן האבן זיך געוואונדערט און געפרעגט‪ ,‬וואס איז דער‬ ‫פשט דערפון‪ ,‬אז מען לאזט זיך אזויפיל קאסטן פארן בית‪-‬המדרש ‪-‬‬ ‫אין די צייט וואס מען וואלט געקענט שפארן פיל געלט און דאס מאכן‬ ‫מער אויף א ביליגערע סארט אופן – האט דער רב דערויף געענטפערט‪:‬‬ ‫"ווען מען בויעט אן אייגענעם הויז‪ ,‬פרעגט מען אויך די אלע קושיות? –‬ ‫דעמאלס קלערט מען נישט פון שפארן‪ ,‬נאר מען וויל האבן די שענסטע‬ ‫און בעסטע"‪.‬‬ ‫דער רב שליט"א איז ביי דער מיינונג‪ ,‬אז א בית‪-‬המדרש דארף זיין‬ ‫דער היים פון יעדן איד‪ ,‬דארט דארף ער זיך שפירן באקוועם און שפירן‬ ‫אז דארט וואוינט ער‪ .‬פארקערט‪ ,‬ווען ער גייט אהיים‪ ,‬דארף ער דאס‬ ‫אנקוקן ווי אויף צייטווייליג‪ ,‬ער דארף שפירן ווי ער וויל זיך שוין זען‬ ‫צוריק אין בית‪-‬המדרש‪.‬‬ ‫לכתחילה איז געווען דער רצון פונעם רב שליט"א‪ ,‬אז דער בית‪-‬‬ ‫המדרש זאל זיין אפן אלע שעות בייטאג און ביינאכט‪ ,‬ווי אויך זאל‬ ‫שטענדיג זיין דארט עלעקטערי און עירקאנדישן‪ .‬למעשה האט מען‬ ‫באשלאסן אז אין די שעות צווישן איינס און פינף אזייגער ביינאכט איז‬ ‫דער בית‪-‬המדרש פארשלאסן‪ ,‬אבער פארט איז פאראן א מעגליכקייט‬ ‫פאר א איד וואס וויל דוקא נוצן דעם בית‪-‬המדרש אין די דאזיגע צייטן‪,‬‬ ‫אז ער קען באקומען א שליסל צו קענען אריינגיין אהין לערנען‪.‬‬

‫כלילת יופי משוש כל הארץ‬

‫זיבן יאר צוריק איז פארענדיגט געווארן דאס בויען פון דעם נייעם‬ ‫פראכטפולער בנין בית‪-‬המדרש דקהל שערי תפילה‪ .‬דער בנין ענהאלט‬

‫א היכל בית‪-‬המדרש מיט ‪ 220‬זיץ פלעצער‪ ,‬א בית‪-‬מדרש שני‪ ,‬ווי אויך‬ ‫א באזונדערע צימער פארן רב שליט"א‪ ,‬וואו ער נעמט אויף פאר‬ ‫ייעוץ על כל צרה שלא תבוא פון אלע סארט ענינים‪ ,‬כלליות'דיגע און‬ ‫פרטיות'דיגע‪ ,‬און טיילט דארט צדקה; אויפן אונטערשטן שטאק איז‬ ‫פאראן א הערליכער מקוה‪ ,‬א קאווע צימער מיט א זאל; אויף דער‬ ‫אויבערשטער שטאק געפינט זיך דער עזרת‪-‬נשים מיט דער כולל‬ ‫אברכים‪.‬‬ ‫דאס בית‪-‬המדרש איז נישט בלויז אויפגעבויעט געווארן מיט א‬ ‫שיינקייט‪ ,‬זי ווערט נאך ביז היינט אפגעהיטן און אכטונג געגעבן אז‬ ‫זי זאל בלייבן שיין און ריין‪ .‬די גבאי קודש לייגן דערויף א באזונדערע‬ ‫דגש און גיבן אכטונג דערויף‪ .‬אין בית‪-‬המדרש איז נישט ערלויבט‬ ‫אריינצוברענגען עסן אדער טרינקען‪ ,‬אפילו שלש‪-‬סעודות ווערט‬ ‫געפראוועט אונטן אין זאל און נישט אויבן אין גרויסן בית‪-‬המדרש‪.‬‬

‫שיעורי תורה‬

‫בית‪-‬המדרש שערי‬ ‫תפילה‪ ,‬איז בלי ספק‬ ‫א בית‪-‬המדרש אויף‬ ‫וואס אידן קוקן ארויף‬ ‫מיט כבוד און עהרע‪.‬‬ ‫זי שיינט צו זיין איינע‬ ‫פון די גאר חשוב'ע בתי‬ ‫מדרשות וואס באשיינען‬ ‫די אידישע וועלט מיט‬ ‫איר אייגנארטיגקייט‪.‬‬

‫דער סדר‪-‬היום אין בית‪-‬המדרש הויבט זיך‬ ‫אן אום ‪ 6:15‬פארטאגס‪ ,‬מיטן ערשטן מנין‬ ‫שחרית אין בית‪-‬מדרש שני‪ .‬נאכן דאווענען‬ ‫איז פאראן א שיעור אין דף‪-‬היומי‪ ,‬דורך‬ ‫דער מגיד‪-‬שיעור הרב פייוויל מאשינסקי‬ ‫שליט"א‪ ,‬מנהל מפעל קופת עזרא‪.‬‬ ‫אום זיבן‪-‬דרייסיג‪ ,‬שטעלט מען זיך‬ ‫דאווענען במתינות אין היכל בית‪-‬המדרש‪,‬‬ ‫דארט וואו דער רב שליט"א דאוונט‪ .‬נאכן‬ ‫דאווענען לערנט דער רב פאר א שיעור אין‬ ‫נ"ך פאר צוואנציג מינוט‪ .‬דער שיעור איז‬ ‫געגרינדעט געווארן עטליכע חדשים נאך‬ ‫וואס מען איז אריינגעקומען אין נייעם בית‪-‬‬ ‫המדרש‪ ,‬אנגעהויבן האט מען מיט קהלת‪,‬‬ ‫לערענדיג א פסוק יעדן טאג‪ .‬עס האט‬ ‫גענומען צו ענדיגן קהלת צוויי‪-‬און‪-‬א‪-‬האלב‬ ‫יאר‪ .‬אצינד לערנט מען פאר משלי‪ ,‬וואו מען‬ ‫האלט ביי פרק י"ד און עס נעמט אן ערך פון‬ ‫פינף טעג פאר איין פסוק‪.‬‬ ‫אין חודש אלול לערנט מען פאר שערי תשובה לרבינו יונה‪ ,‬אנשטאט‬ ‫דעם געווענליכן שיעור‪ .‬אצינד האלט מען אינמיטן פרק ב'‪.‬‬ ‫דער דאזיגער שיעור קומט פאר יעדן טאג‪ ,‬אויסער זונטאג‪ ,‬וואס דאן‬ ‫איז פאראן א שיעור אין פירוש‪-‬התפילה אום ‪ ,9:30‬וואו דער רב שליט"א‬ ‫לערנט פאר דער טייטש פון דאווענען אויפן סדר‪ ,‬במשך פון א שעה‬ ‫מיט צוואנציג מינוט‪ .‬אנגעהויבן האט מען דעם שיעור מיט פופצן יאר‬ ‫צוריק‪ ,‬אנהויבנדיג מיט קריאת‪-‬שמע שעל המיטה‪ ,‬געגאנגען צו מודה‪-‬‬ ‫אני און ווייטער‪ .‬אצינד איז שוין פאראן פאראן זיבן‪-‬הונדערט‪-‬און‪-‬‬ ‫זעכציג שיעורים או מען האלט ביי 'אז ישיר'‪.‬‬ ‫נאכן שיעור אין הלכות תפילה‪ ,‬איז פאראן א הפסקה פון צען מינוט‪,‬‬ ‫און דאן לערנט דער רב שליט"א פאר א שיעור אין מנחת חינוך‪.‬‬ ‫אום ‪ 8:00‬שטעלט זיך דער דריטער מנין שחרית‪ ,‬אונטן אין זאל‪.‬‬

‫כבקרת רועה עדרו‬

‫שטייען שורות פון מענטשן וועלכע גייען דורך דעם רב שליט"א‪ ,‬לייעוץ‬ ‫ולהתברך‪ .‬פון די גאנצע שטאט‪ ,‬ווי אויך פון אנדערע שטעט‪ ,‬קומען‬ ‫מאסן מענטשן זיך דורכרעדן און שעפן חיזוק פונעם רב שליט"א‪.‬‬ ‫עס איז נישט פאראן קיין איין מקום אזוי ווי אין דער מקום‪ ,‬וואו‬ ‫עס קומען אידן פון אלע סארט שיכטן‪ ,‬קרייזן און שטערמונגען‪ ,‬פון‬ ‫איבעראל קומט מען זיך שואל עצה זיין‪ .‬לעומתם שטייט דער רב‬ ‫שליט"א אויף זיין מקום מיוחד אויף מזרח‪ ,‬הערט אויס יעדן יחיד באשר‬ ‫הוא שם‪ ,‬איז יעדן מייעץ און מחזק‪ .‬כבקרת רועה עדרו‪ ,‬מעביר צאנו‬ ‫תחת שבטו‪ ,‬לאזט זיך דער רב אראפ צו יעדן יונגל און בחור'ל‪ ,‬הערט‬ ‫יעדן אויס מיטן גרעסטן מאס אויפמערקזאמקייט און ענטפערט יעדן‬ ‫איינעם זיין פאסיגע תשובה‪.‬‬ ‫דאס זעלבע חזר'ט זיך איבער בזעיר‪-‬אנפין נאך יעדע תפילה אין‬ ‫בית‪-‬המדרש‪ ,‬בשעת אידן גייען דורך און זענען זיך מייעץ‪ .‬טראצדעם‬ ‫וואס דער רב איז פארנומען מיט אלע סארט‬ ‫עסקנות אין שטאט‪ ,‬קען יעדער שטענדיג‬ ‫צוקומען און זיך שואל עצה זיין בכל עת‬ ‫מצוא‪.‬‬ ‫דערמיט לאזט זיך זאגן‪ ,‬אז דער בית‪-‬‬ ‫המדרש צייכנט זיך אויס מיט די דריי עמודי‬ ‫עולם‪ ,‬תורה‪ ,‬עבודה און גמילת‪-‬חסדים‪.‬‬

‫אז איר וועט אריבערקומען אין בית‪-‬המדרש דקהל שערי תפילה‪,‬‬ ‫יעדן אינדערפרי‪ ,‬וועט איר זיך אנשטויסן מיט אן ערהאבן בילד‪ .‬עס‬

‫והגית בו יומם ולילה‬

‫תפילת מנחה‪ ,‬דאוונט מען אין שוהל‬ ‫אום ‪ .1:45‬מעריב דאוונט מען ‪ ,10:00‬אין די‬ ‫ווינטער חדשים איז פאראן נאך א מנין אום‬ ‫‪.8:45‬‬ ‫צווישן ניין און צען אזייגער‪ ,‬לערנט‬ ‫דער רב פאר גמרא‪ ,‬מתובל בעניני הלכה‪.‬‬ ‫אנגעהויבן האט מען מיט מסכת שבת‪ ,‬וואס‬ ‫מען האט געענדיגט מיט פינף יאר צוריק‪,‬‬ ‫דאן איז מען געגאנגען צו מגילה‪ ,‬וואס מען‬ ‫האט לעצטנס געענדיגט און אצינד לערנט‬ ‫מען מסכת חגיגה‪.‬‬ ‫נאכן שיעור דאוונט מען מעריב‪.‬‬ ‫ליל‪-‬שישי איז פאראן א שיעור נאך מעריב אין חומש ורש"י‪ .‬דער‬ ‫שיעור קומט אויס אומגעפער אום ‪ .10:40‬פאר פסח לערנט מען הגדה‬ ‫אנשטאט די געווענליכע שיעור אין חומש ורש"י‪.‬‬

‫לעסוק בהם בתורה‬

‫אין בית‪-‬המדרש קהל שערי תפילה לויטעט דער כלל פון חז"ל‪,‬‬ ‫אז 'לא נתנה שבתות אלא לעסוק בהם בתורה'‪ .‬שבת פאר כגוונא‬ ‫טרעט דער רב אויף מיט עטליכע ווערטער אויף די פרשה פון די וואך‪,‬‬ ‫ארויסברענגענדיג אינטערעסאנטע נקודות איבער די פרשה‪ .‬דאס‬ ‫זעלבע חזר'ט זיך איבער שבת אינדערפרי נאכן ליינען‪ ,‬בשעת דער רב‬ ‫רעדט בערך ‪ 15‬מינוט‪ .‬אום שבת מברכין נעמט דער שמועס לענגער און‬ ‫אז עס קומט שבת מברכין אלול נעמט דער שמועס באלד א שעה צייט‪.‬‬ ‫בכלל איז דאס דאווענען שבת מיט א געוואלדיגע מאס ערנסטקייט‪,‬‬ ‫מען דאוונט בנעימות ובמתינות‪ ,‬בכוונה ובקול המעורר את הכוונה‪.‬‬ ‫שבת נאכמיטאג לערנט דער רב פאר פרקי אבות צווישן ‪ 5:30‬און‬ ‫‪ .6:30‬שפעטער נאך מנחה‪ ,‬איז פאראן שלש‪-‬סעודות אונטן אין זאל‪ ,‬וואו‬

‫דער רב שליט"א זאגט תורה‪ ,‬מתובל מיט עניני דיומא ובפרשת השבוע‪.‬‬ ‫נאך מעריב און נאך וואס דער ציבור גייט אריבער זאגן א גוטע וואך‪,‬‬ ‫זאגט דער רב אין בית‪-‬המדרש ויתן לך ברוב עם‪ .‬מען ענדיגט עטליכע‬ ‫שעה נאכן זמן מוצאי שבת‪.‬‬ ‫אין ווינטער לערנט דער רב פאר‪ ,‬מוצאי שבת‪ ,‬א שיעור אין נביאים‪.‬‬ ‫דער שיעור איז ברייט באקאנט אין די וועלט און מען האלט אצינד‬ ‫אינמיטן ספר שמואל‪.‬‬

‫שיעורים מיוחדים‬

‫אויסער די רעגלמעסיגע שיעורים‪ ,‬זענען פאראן ספעציעלע‬ ‫שיעורים וואס קומען פאר במשך דעם יאר‪ ,‬וואס זענען באקאנט ביי‬ ‫אלע שוחרי תורה ועבודה‪.‬‬ ‫דער גרעסטער ציבור וואס קומען זיך צוזאמען צו שיעורים‪ ,‬געפינט‬ ‫מען אום תשעה‪-‬באב‪ ,‬ווען עס איז פאראן א פולער בית‪-‬המדרש‬ ‫פון אידן וואס זענען משתוקק לשמוע את דבר השם‪ .‬דער דאווענען‬ ‫הויבט זיך אן אום אכט‪-‬אזייגער און מען ענדיגט דעם קינות אום איינס‪-‬‬ ‫אזייגער‪ .‬דאן לערנט מען פאר א שיעור בעניני דיומא במשך פון א שעה‬ ‫מיט פופצן מינוט‪ ,‬און נאכן שיעור דאוונט מען מנחה‪ .‬די מתפללים פון‬ ‫בית‪-‬המדרש קומען געווענליך אן אהיים אום פיר‪-‬אזייגער נאכמיטאג‪.‬‬ ‫שבועות פארטאגס קומט פאר א שיעור אום ‪ 2:45‬פארטאגס‪.‬‬ ‫שפעטער דאוונט מען וותיקין א שחרית וואס נעמט אין אלגעמיין פיר‬ ‫שעה‪ .‬אקדמות זאגט דער רב פארן ציבור‪.‬‬ ‫אויך נעילת‪-‬החג פון יעדן יום‪-‬טוב‪ ,‬איז א גרויסער מעמד‪ ,‬בשעת מען‬ ‫איז עוסק בדברי תורה ובעניני החג‪ .‬מען גייט אהיים פון בית‪-‬המדרש‬ ‫צוויי‪-‬און‪-‬א‪-‬האלב שעה נאכן זמן מוצאי יום‪-‬טוב‪.‬‬

‫הרבצת התורה‬

‫די שיעורים פונעם רב שליט"א איז באקאנט אין גאנצן געגנט אלס‬ ‫א מיוחדת במינה‪ ,‬זייענדיג א מעיין המתגבר‪ .‬דאס אייגנארטיגקייט פון‬ ‫די שיעורים זענען אבער דערפאר‪ ,‬וואס זיי זענען פילפארביג‪ :‬בשעת‬ ‫די שיעורים אין גמרא זענען געבויעט מער לומדי'ש‪ ,‬ווערן די שלש‪-‬‬ ‫סעודות שמועסן מיט פארמאכטע אויגן און מיט אן עבודה‪ ,‬ווידער‬ ‫די שבת'דיגע שמועסן זענען נעימות'דיג און געשמאק‪ .‬אלע שיעורים‬ ‫זענען צוגעשטעלט און פאסיג לויט זייער זמן און מצב‪.‬‬ ‫זכתה 'קהל שערי תפילה' אז די שיעורים פונעם רב שליט"א ‪ -‬וואס‬ ‫ווערן פארגעלערנט בין עמודי דגירסא – ווערן אויסגעהערט אין די‬ ‫טויזנטער‪ ,‬פיל אידן נעמען דערפון חיזוק אויף עבודת‪-‬השם און שעפן‬ ‫זיך אן מיט אהבת‪-‬תורה‪ ,‬אהבת התפילה‪ ,‬יראת‪-‬שמים און מידות טובות‪.‬‬ ‫ברם זכור אותו‪-‬איש לטובה‪ ,‬אחד המיוחד שבחבריא‪ ,‬וואס פארמאגט‬ ‫א גרויסער חלק אין די מאסיווע הרבצת התורה‪ ,‬הרה"ח ר' אלימלך‬ ‫גלאנץ הי"ו‪ ,‬וועלכער גיבט זיך אוועק מיט אן איבערגעגעבנקייט‬ ‫אינזינען צו האבן די טעיפס פון די שיעורים‪ .‬די דאזיגע שיעורים ווערן‬ ‫אויך ארויפגעלייגט אויף דער קול הלשון טעלפאן ליניע‪ ,‬וואו עס ווערט‬ ‫אויסגעהערט אין די מאסן דורך אידן‪ ,‬הצמאים לשמוע דבר השם‪.‬‬

‫דאס אייגנארטיגקייט און שיינקייט פון דעם דאזיגן בית‪-‬המדרש‪,‬‬ ‫באשטייט דערפון וואס עס איז ריין לשמה‪ .‬אין בית‪-‬המדרש קומען נישט‬ ‫פאר קיינע ל"ג בעומר הדלקות אדער יארצייט סעודות‪ ,‬עס קומען אויך‬ ‫נישט פאר קיין פראגראמען פאר קינדער און בחורים‪ .‬דאס איז א מקום‬ ‫וואס איז מיוחד פאר תורה און תפילה און דינט דעם צוועק בנאמנות‪ .‬די‬ ‫פילע שיעורי תורה און די ווארעמע דאווענענ'ס זענען עדות אויף דער‬ ‫שיינקייט פון דער שוהל‪.‬‬ ‫אין בית‪-‬המדרש איז נישט פאראן אזא מושג ווי שמועסן ביים‬ ‫דאווענען‪ .‬בכלל נעמט קיינער נישט ארויס קיין סעלפאן אין בית‪-‬‬ ‫המדרש‪ ,‬עס איז אן ערנסטער מקום‪ ,‬א היים פאר תורה און תפילה‪.‬‬ ‫על שלשה דברים בית‪-‬המדרש 'קהל שערי תפילה' עומד‪:‬‬ ‫על התורה – די פילצאליגע שיעורים בין עמודי דגירסא‪.‬‬ ‫על העבודה – די ערליכע לאנגע דאווענענ'ס‪.‬‬ ‫ועל גמילת‪-‬חסדים – די געלטער וואס ווערן אויסגעטיילט פאר‬ ‫נצרכים בחדר המיוחד של הרב שליט"א‪.‬‬ ‫די קוואליטעט פון די מתפללי בית‪-‬המדרש‪ ,‬באשטייען פון אזעלכע‬ ‫אידן‪ ,‬עובדי ה'‪ ,‬וואס פארמאגן די כוחות הנפש מיטצוהאלטן אזא סדר‬ ‫היום מיט אזא דאווענען ווי דאס בית‪-‬המדרש שטעלט מיט זיך פאר‪ .‬אין‬ ‫בית‪-‬המדרש איז פאראן א פילפארביגער ציבור‪ ,‬אנגעהויבן פון רבי'שע‬ ‫אייניקלעך מיט סאמעט ביי די ארבל און געענדיגט מיט קנייטש הוטן‬ ‫און נאך ווייניגער‪ .‬הצד‪-‬השוה שבהם‪ ,‬אז אלע פון זיי זענען ערנסטע‬ ‫יונגעלייט וואס שטרעבן ארויפצוגיין מעלה מעלה בעבודת‪-‬השם און‬ ‫ווילן זיך משלים זיין בעבודת הבורא‪.‬‬ ‫אויף די ערנסטקייט פונעם ציבור‪ ,‬קען מעיד זיין דער פאקט אז‬ ‫יעדער ערב ראש‪-‬חודש‪ ,‬זאגט מען יום‪-‬כיפור‪-‬קטן‪ ,‬וואס נעמט בערך‬ ‫א שעה מיט פופצן מינוט‪ .‬אויך אין די שובבי"ם טעג‪ ,‬ווען עס געפאלט‬ ‫אויס א שנת העיבור‪ ,‬פאסט מען און מען זאגט סליחות‪.‬‬
